The magic of Christmas
at Great Fosters and Barnett Hill GREAT FOSTERS – EGHAM This five-star Tudor estate in Egham is a Dickensian fantasy at Christmastime. With roaring fires, and glittering decorations, it appeals to all the senses – from the creaky wooden floors to the scents of pine, mulled wine and applewood in the air. As you would expect, there is a full festive agenda here, with their Festive Afternoon Tea leading the way available from December 1st. Served in the Anne Boleyn drawing room (which bears the famed Tudor queen’s personal crests in the original plasterwork!), taking a festive tea here is a real treat, with the fire crackling, and decorations glistening. And the menu – what a delight, with particular highlights including their festive sandwich fillings – Smoked Salmon & Beetroot Chutney anyone? – to the crowning glory of a Mont Blanc Tart on the patisserie plate. We highly recommend it after a busy day Christmas shopping in nearby Windsor! From

£35 per person. For gatherings with nearest and dearest in the run up to the holidays, their ‘festive feasting menu’ is just the ticket, available in one of their many beautiful private dining rooms, ranging from the grandeur of the Tithe Barn to the intimacy of the Wine Room. There’s even a package including a welcome drink, half a bottle of wine, the sumptuous four-course menu and hire of the private room for just £95 per person. For the holidays proper, if you’re wanting to really treat yourself this year, why not check in from the 24th of December until the 27th, with their all (carol!) singing, all dancing package? Including just about every bit of festive food you can manage, including of course Christmas lunch, and luxury overnight accommodation for three nights, this ultimate experience starts at just £949.50 per person in total.
“For gatherings with nearest and dearest in the run up to the holidays, their ‘festive feasting menu’ is just the ticket”
And we mustn’t forget the grand finale to the whole festive season – New Year’s Eve. Presented in the Tithe Barn (the oldest barn in the South East don’t you know?), you’ll enjoy a champagne and canape reception, a five course banquet and dance the night away to their DJ before toasting 2024 with another glass of fizz. Decadent indeed, and available at £125 per person – or, you can stay the night with their special package for one or two nights. Last but certainly not least, is the fine tradition of the Grand Great Fosters New Year’s Day Brunch to really get 2024 going with a bang (and to clear away any foggy heads!). With a sublime spread of brunch dishes, a bloody mary and pudding, it’s a winner at £70 per person.
BARNETT HILL – THE SURREY HILLS (WONERSH) If you want to celebrate a little further south, look no further than Barnett Hill. Originally built as the home of the Thomas Cook family, it’s a grand old pile with a seriously modern twist. Tucked away (as you might imagine) atop a hill, you’ll feel a world away when you head up to the hotel along their winding drive. Again with the roaring fires that are something of a signature of the Alexander Hotel Collection (the British-owned brand behind both hotels), you can expect snowy white decorations, glorious gardens and a beautiful view of the stars from this

enchanting spot. Also kicking off their festive season with afternoon tea, head to Barnett Hill from December 1st for this special treat served in their charming library. We can’t wait to tuck into their White Chocolate & Raspberry Cream Éclair, or the Apple & Ginger Trifle! Available from £35, it’s the perfect pitstop after a day of Christmas shopping Guildford or the nearby Surrey Hills villages. Similarly to Great Fosters, you can check in here from the 24th – 27th with all the bells & whistles, from only £600 per person for three nights. But do move quickly – they’re sold out for New Year’s Eve already! We also think Barnett Hill might be the perfect place to pitch up during that curious time, ‘Twixmas’, when chocolate becomes a common breakfast substitute. Why not venture out to Barnett Hill for a lovely lunch or supper, or perhaps stay the night, with fabulous rooms from just £179 including a full breakfast. We should also say, that both Great Fosters & Barnett Hill are amazing destinations to visit with dogs & children – they cater for both beautifully. At a push we’d pick Barnett Hill to visit with your fur baby for the amazing walks nearby.

he Connaught Grill is one of London’s most celebrated restaurants and home to the original power players of the capital. The restaurant has a respectful nod to its distinguished heritage, but with a contemporary interpretation in both the design and cuisine. Located on the ground floor of the hotel, the corridor walls display one-of-a-kind vintages of wines and champagnes from Burgundy’s Domaine de la Romanée Conti to Bollinger Vieilles Vignes Francaises, and works of art by design masters Louise Bourgeois, Idris Khan and Le Corbusier. The 46-seat restaurant is a showcase of contemporary creativity and craftsmanship. The open kitchen allows guests to see chefs cook on a theatrical wood-burning grill and rotisserie. Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten pays homage to classic grill dining, but with his own signature twists of modernity, and using ingredients with the finest provenance. For the best of British comfort, a Sunday Roast is presented and carved on the restored silver trolley from the original Grill, wild seabass en croute is a ceremonious pastry-enrobed showstopper, carved tableside in true old-school Connaught style. Ensuring balance, light and vegetarian, dishes include shaved brussels sprouts salad topped with
an organic fried egg, raw diver scallop served in the shell and wild mushroom salad with a herbal pine nut dressing. Sashimi, oysters and langoustines are served spectacularly on vast bowls of ice. Traditional British favourites also appear on the dessert menu, overseen by Executive Pastry Chef Jerome Beraudo, including sticky toffee pudding served with butterscotch sauce and clotted cream sorbet, chocolate soufflé topped with ice cream and Crêpes Suzette. Feel ‘The Pull of the Land’ this winter at The Lightbox Gallery
F
ive artists with a shared love of nature come together in a new group show at the award-winning Lightbox Gallery in Woking until 10th December. Having met initially during COVID-19 lockdown in various online artist forums, artists Anne Winstanley Wood, Claire Hankey, Debbie Tearle, Emma Tweedie, and Sarah Cox discovered they all shared the same passion for nature and the outdoors. As this theme is central to all their artistic practices, they formed a plan to come together and present a special pop-up art exhibition, which celebrates and brings to life their different approaches and responses to nature. The group exhibition will be presented in the Art Fund Prize Gallery on the ground floor. From reimagined landscapes that evoke sensory memories, expressive landscapes inspired by the Surrey Hills, abstract paintings inspired by nature walks and childhood memories, paintings which explore the effect of nature on human consciousness, to artworks which seek to capture the elemental spirit and energy of places, the land sea and sky have inspired all of the artists. When searching for a title for the exhibition, ‘The Pull of the Land’ was the unanimous favourite. Each of the works on display has been exclusively created to work within the gallery space at the Lightbox, with the artists having regular meetings online to check in on painting progress, colours, and, of course, the final curation. With an impressive 20 metres of wall

space, this contemporary space provides the perfect backdrop for this nature-inspired show. “Working remotely definitely came with challenges, as some of us live pretty far from each other, but it has been fascinating not only to see the overall body of work develop but also to connect with a group of like-minded artists who all love nature so much, “ says Sarah Cox. I’ve enjoyed this process as it’s not only been a creative journey but also brilliant from a social aspect. We have all gotten to know each other well by working collaboratively. I’ve loved what each of us as individuals has brought to the table,” says Emma Tweedie. The Lightbox is a charitable arts and heritage organisation with a social purpose to improve its community’s well-being and quality of life.

rriving at this half-timbered hideaway where Hampshire meets Surrey scores higher than most on the fairytale scale. The long approach, up and down through woodland glades; a sign here and there warning of badgers crossing. The first sight of the house, at the brow of the hill - an Elizabethan stunner straight out of Country Life. The sense of space. The postcard-ness of it all. And then you find the story’s just as alluring inside as out. The original oak beams, beautifully restored and everywhere you look, are actually repurposed from ancient ships (who knew the Tudors were so hot on recycling?). There are huge open fires, roaring in winter, and views out to the willow trees and topiary of an idyllic country garden, festooned with lights at dusk. Beyond, you spy the Surrey Hills in the distance, beneath the setting sun. The Music Room is Cain Manor’s showpiece, an airy space with a cathedral-like window at one end and a gallery in the eaves at the other - just the spot for musicians (and birds-eye photography of the proceedings). Bathed in natural light, this barnlike setting needs little decoration, and is equally suited to a ceremony or full wedding breakfast and evening reception (with its own bar tucked away in the corner). In spring and summer, the party spills out onto the patio and the gardens beyond, where younger guests can roam free (or keep themselves busy

WESTMINSTER SECURITY Professionals In Protection…Always On Guard.
W
ith Christmas just around the corner, the festivities are in full swing. The decorations will soon be up and present shopping complete, but do not neglect your personal and property security during this busy period. Organised and opportunist thieves take full advantage of the festive shopping frenzy, with you and your house being top of their list! Christmas sees a peak in home and business burglaries with the long winter nights, particularly in more affluent areas. With the ever-increasing crime rates and vast increase in targeted, often violent high-value burglaries and street robberies, homeowners must take proactive steps to enhance their personal and property security. One of the most effective ways to improve home security is to make your property less appealing to criminals by investing in technical and physical security, such as CCTV, alarms, and lighting. Also, fences, gates, windows, and doors. A 24/7 security guard presence or residential security team is advised should your profile, status, threat, and risk require such measures. This is an essential requirement for high-profile business leaders, celebrities, political, and royal stock. Should the threat and risk of burglary and robbery be enhanced due to your career or company, it’s reassuring to know that private security is a tax34 DECEMBER 2023
deductible business expense. In addition to these often-expensive solutions, there are several simple steps that everyone can take to enhance their security. These include making sure you lock doors, gates, and windows. Keep presents and your car keys out of site, and don’t leave ladders or garden equipment out that could be used to gain entry to your home. It is also important to be aware of the latest trends, such as the use of social media by criminals to identify potential targets and take steps to protect against these threats. Ultimately, the key to effective home security is a combination of technological solutions, physical measures, and manned guarding. By taking proactive steps to protect your home and assets, you can help ensure the safety and security of your family and possessions, gaining peace of mind which comes with good security awareness and measures. icture this: you’ve booked the ultimate Gordon Ramsay experience: his signature Beef Wellington – the showstopping centerpiece to your next dinner party! Arriving on the day of the class, you step out of the wintry temperatures into a friendly welcome at the Academy, followed by a hot coffee to chase off the cold. You head upstairs where you’re met with the toughest choice of the day: do you opt for the Chill Lounge to relax and watch Gordon creating tasty treats on the big screen, or do you instead take a trip around the culinary world in a Cookbook Library with over 1,000 different books to choose from? Before you know it, it’s time to don your apron, roll up your sleeves and create your own masterpiece! The class will take you through seasonal recipes, packed with flavour and covering new and old skills alike. This winter’s menu includes a delicious mushroom risotto – paired with a crisp glass of wine, that’s lunch covered! It also features Poires Belle Hélène – not forgetting a fluffy Chantilly cream. It’s easy to relax straight into the experience, with ingredients already weighed out, and not an ounce of washing up in sight! You can focus

instead on creating each step of the recipes, guided by a friendly chef teacher. Each class is generously seasoned with tips from experienced chefs, to make sure you get the perfect result every time! Now for the main event – the showstopping Beef Wellington. Step one: sear off your Chateaubriand and smother it in a rich mushroom duxelles. Step two: wrap them in a delicate crèpe, made from scratch (of course!). The grand finale? Rolling your Wellington and dressing it in a beautiful latticed pastry to add that touch of Ramsay magic. You’ll have the chance to taste the Wellington made during the class by the chef, accompanied by a rich red wine jus, glazed carrots and garlic mash – enough to get your tastebuds tingling! As with all of the Academy classes, the fun doesn’t finish at the end of the experience – your full Wellington is yours to take home and share with loved ones, along with your new found skills, confidence and (just in case!) recipe packs from the day. SILENT POOL GIN: L
A spirited tale of nature, craftsmanship, and sustainability
et’s take you back to 2013: A group of friends happen on a gorgeous location known as the Silent Pool, deep in the Surrey hills, an area of outstanding beauty. This discovery sparked the birth of Silent Pool Gin, a brand that embodies the essence of its serene birthplace and the surrounding Surrey Hills. They converted dilapidated farm buildings into a working distillery with a restored vintage wood-fired steam boiler powering a hand-built copper still. They source local ingredients, exotic botanicals, and experiment with all kinds of recipes – sometimes failing, forever seeking, always refusing to compromise on quality. Until finally, they create a gin of rare taste and beauty. They christen it after its place of birth. Inspired by the crystal-clear waters of the Silent Pool, sourced from rainwater trickling down the North Downs hills, the gin captures the natural purity of its origin. The iconic teal blue colour of the bottle mirrors the pool’s trademark hue, a result of the chalk bed that purifies and gives the water its stunning appearance. Immediately popular with locals, Silent Pool Gin quickly acquires new fans, a large social following, and rafts of industry awards, amassing an enviable reputation across the world. Silent Pool Gin is classic gin at heart featuring over 24 botanicals. Full-bodied and fresh with depth, clarity and above all else, flavour. It’s a rich, clean, juniper-driven spirit with floral layers of lavender and chamomile. Fresh notes of citrus and kaffir-

lime are grounded with the subtle sweetness of local honey, creating a well-balanced gin that’s both traditional and refreshingly individual. The Silent Pool distillery is not just about crafting exceptional gin; it’s a commitment to sustainability. From solar panels generating power to a closedloop glycol cooling system and boilers powered by hydrogenated vegetable oil and local sustainable forests, Silent Pool Gin strives for eco-friendly practices. Embracing its local community, the distillery supports beekeeping, sourcing honey from the village Beekeeper, that it’s used in their innovative distillation process providing its signature roundness. Provenance matters, and Silent Pool Gin’s unique characteristics and sustainable practices set it apart. The Surrey Hills and Silent Pool location, steeped in nature shape the brand’s identity. This festive season, make a statement with a gift that reflects the true essence of nature, craftsmanship, and the joyous spirit of Christmas – Silent Pool Gin, more than a drink, a lifestyle. silentpooldistillers.com

award for our Chocolate Christmas pudding- it’s a bit like an Easter Egg in concept , with crunchy almond chocolates inside, and I always take one home for my two boys at Christmas- that’s a really fun product. Our products are only available in the month before Christmas so that makes it special, but also a challenge!
Award Winning Patisserie & Chocolaterie We talk to Chris Bachmann from Bachmann’s Patisserie Why is Christmas special at Bachmanns? I think it comes down to our products- we make such a variety of Christmas specialities that everyone who comes through the doors can find something special they like to give as a gift or treat themselves. Over the years we have built up an ever growing long fan base of a “Bachmanns Christmas”. Our regular customers always make a trip in December to see what my team have created, and the shop is always busy during Advent, when we the shops look so festive. What sells best at Christmas? That’s a difficult one! It changes from year to year if I’m honest. We make Stollen, Christmas Puddings, Christmas Cakes, Mince Pies, Christmas Petits fours, and a bewildering array of Chocolate Christmas products. If I had to pick out favourites, it would be difficult to be honest, but our Prune and Cognac Tart was previously named as the best Christmas Cake or dessert in the UK, and more recently, our Lebkuchen was named the best gingerbread, so I guess I’m particularly proud of those. A few years ago we won a national Design 52 DECEMBER 2023

“Tell us a little about the history of Bachmanns” My Dad started the business with my Mum in Thames Ditton in 1989. After training in Switzerland he’d enjoyed a stellar career in confectionary including stints as the executive pastry chef at the Dorchester and The Park Lane Intercontinental, and the Chief confectioner at the Swiss centre in Leicester Square. He wanted to create the kind of local shop that they have in Switzerland; a store that covers all aspects of chocolate and confectionary, at the highest of standards. Since it has started, Bachmanns Patisserie has gone on to win over 30 national awards, so I guess you can say he achieved that. I think that the real reason that we have been so successful over the years, and what I think sets us apart from many places, is the variety and sheer excellence of his recipes. Our products have a simplicity and clarity of flavour that is hard to match, and we do take care to never compromise on the quality of our ingredients. Across the year, we make over 450 different products, and change them through the seasons, so anyone will be able to find a favourite, and it keeps it exciting for our regular customers. I took over the business just over ten years ago, on his retirement, but he still provides my team with inspiration and guidance- in fact he’s in Thames Ditton right now making our German Lebkuchen (gingerbread)! A few years back we opened our second store in Weybridge, which was very exciting. It has allowed us to expand- we now have about twenty staff- and had the space to create a special separate chocolate room there, where we produce all our chocolates. The two sites both have their own pastry kitchen and they run in tandem, with each site specialising in certain areas, but all our products are hand finished every morning in both shops. It was a doubling of size and a huge investment for us. So far it has been a great success, and it’s been very satisfying – and a relief(!) to watch the business grow.
Festive Season Opening Hours Open from Tuesday 5th – Saturday 23rd December. Monday to Saturday from 9am to 4pm. Closed 24th to 29th December. Return 30th and New Year’s Eve until 2pm.

Kylie Minogue’s incredible fashion evolution
As well as singing absolute bangers, the pop princess has had fun with fashion over the years.
fledged pop star. In honour of Minogue’s US residency, we’ve taken a look back at her fashion evolution – from puffy shirts to tiny gold hot pants and sleek red gowns…
THE EARLY YEARS
K
ylie Minogue took to the stage last month for the beginning of her Las Vegas residency. Minogue, 55, is the first headliner for new nightclub Voltaire at The Venetian Resort. The Padam Padam hitmaker has promised fans the experience will “more than just a residency”. Bursting onto the scene as Charlene in Aussie soap Neighbours back in 1986, it wasn’t long before Minogue established herself as a fully-
70 DECEMBER 2023
Minogue’s career began in the Eighties, and her style really was the epitome of this era. As Charlene, she had a wholesome ‘good-girl’ image, with a style to match. The newbie actor rocked a whole lot of fluffy hair, puffy shirts, and cheesy grins. While we still see a lot of Minogue’s mega-watt smile today, her outfits have come a long way.
A POP STAR IS BORN By the late Eighties and early Nineties, Minogue’s pop career was well underway, and she started slowly shedding her innocent image – with the
help of some edgier clothes. Her style choices became increasingly skin-tight and revealing, tapping into Nineties trends – including spaghetti straps and animal prints.
THE ROAD TO MEGA STARDOM It was when Minogue became a card-carrying, world-famous pop star that she really came into her own fashion-wise. ‘Low-key’ wasn’t something she was ever accused of, instead opting for figurehugging and skimpy clothing, both on stage and off. As her star continued to rise, Minogue’s colour palette largely revolved around glitzy golds and silvers, which went well with her new nickname, ‘the princess of pop’. Minogue reportedly had her pert behind insured for almost £3 million, and her fashion choices of the time often made sure it was well displayed. A little later came what was, unofficially, known as ‘the sheer years’, as Minogue proved herself a particular fan of see-through clothing.
KEEPING IT CLASSY As her career progressed, Minogue began to show us a sophisticated side to her fashion, without losing her sense of personal style. The pop star became a particular fan of dresses that nipped in her waist – a good style tip for more petite women (Minogue is 5ft) who want to wear longer dresses without looking swamped. She’s a firm fan of rocking a sleek red gown, and never let go of her love of all things sparkly – often still opting for gold and silver
embellishments on her dresses. Since her Aphrodite album came out in 2010, another of her fail-safe looks has been gorgeous Grecian-inspired gowns.
SMART AND FUN Minogue’s style shows she’s always up for trying new things – such as this smart tailored look in one of her favourite colours: gold. Tailoring has become a big part of Minogue’s aesthetic – often given a bit of an edge with interesting details such as racy cut-outs or unusual materials. Minogue’s looking better than ever – and you’ve got to respect her style for continuing to be bold and bright. DECEMBER 2023 71

A
t the Cosmetic Doctors Company, the results and reputations speak for themselves. Most of their clients come to them either through professional recommendation or word of mouth endorsement. Offering both established and the latest treatments: this balance helps them to help you make safe and effective choices.
THEY OFFER: Wrinkle reducing and skin smoothing injections: A highly effective way to reduce forehead lines, frown lines and crow’s feet. HA Dermal Fillers: A highly effective way of restoring facial sagging and volume loss. Fillers are particularly effective at improving smoker’s lines around the mouth. Images in the media of hugely plumped lips and cheeks have given HA fillers an undeservedly poor reputation. When used appropriately the result will be subtle and natural-looking. It will definitely not look like you have had fillers. Profhilo: Increasingly popular skin rejuvenating injections designed to improve skin hydration, stimulate the production if collagen and elastin thus improving skin tone and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. SENSATIONAL SILVER Show your metal with these showstopping pieces, says Katie Wright
WOMEN’S SILVER SEQUIN VELOUR MINI PARTY DRESS, £42, AVAILABLE FROM THREADBARE
O
ne of biggest fashion trends of 2023 has gone stratospheric as the end of the year approaches – silver is the shade to be seen in this festive season. What started on the spring/summer catwalks with glitzy gowns at Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Jason Wu and Georgia Hardinge, went into overdrive with the arrival of Beyonce’s Renaissance World Tour. The pop icon took to the stage in a series of ’70s disco-meets-cyber cowgirl looks, continuing to unveil ever more elaborate silver costumes as the tour progressed. Fans followed suit, donning sequin-covered and metallic outfits to attend the show (it helped that the shops were full of catwalk-inspired designs all summer long). Now, the festive fashion collections have landed, and they’re awash with shimmering silver pieces that are perfect for partying. If it’s a sparkly frock you’re after, you’re spoilt for choice, with everything from bright, Beyonceworthy sequinned minidresses, to midi and wrap styles in more muted tones. The cool girl’s way to work the metallic look? It’s got to be a pair of foil trousers or mini skirt. Teamed with a black top and blazer (glitzy heels are optional), we predict these shiny separates will come in handy next summer too. For a sophisticated take on the trend, anchor your outfit around a gunmetal silver maxi skirt or wide-leg trousers, adding a satin blouse or strappy top.

Fabulously festive nail trends M These are the hottest shades and styles of the season, according to nail experts. By Katie Wright. ariah Carey has been defrosted and the Christmas lights have been switched on… it’s almost time to don our festive finery and get ready
to party. So you’ve got your sparkly dress or statement suit, now it’s time to polish off your outfit with a merry manicure. What’s trending this season? We asked nail experts to talk through the glamorous nail looks to request from your manicurist or create at home…
RICH REDS The ultimate yuletide hue, red was huge on the autumn/winter catwalks and now ravishing rouge shades are topping Christmas mani wishlists. “From wine to burgundy and vermillion shades, rich reds are a versatile and sophisticated choice if you’re looking for something that’s both classically chic and fashionable,” says Tajinder Banwait, Gaëlle Lebrat Personnaz, founder of Manucurist

founder and managing director of Palette London. Gaëlle Lebrat Personnaz, founder of Manucurist, suggests: “Elevate this look even more with a holiday inspired take on the French manicure with the addition of biodegradable glitters that will help you shine without compromise to the planet.” To create the look, paint a thin strip of clear polish across a red base colour then dip them in glitter. Allow to dry thoroughly then brush away any excess.
MOLTEN METALLICS It wouldn’t be Christmas without a bit of shimmer, and this season we’re seeing everything from opaque metallics to glitter nail art. “In the current fashion cycle we have seen a focus on colours and textures that seem to bend light in a futuristic way, adding texture, luminosity and an unexpected finish to looks,” says Personnaz. “We have a glazed effect powder that is perfect to apply to any shade or colour to elevate looks in line with this trend. We look this on a deep red or purple tone to bring depth and luminosity.” Banwait says: “Molten metallic gold is another sure-fire trend for the coming months. Molten 76 DECEMBER 2023

Once completed, apply your top coat to activate your new, twinkling nails.”
MICRO FRENCH MANI “With the lines continuing to blur between beauty and wellness, we have seen a bigger push for nail looks that work to actively improve nail health,” says Personnaz. Case in point: a chic, micro French mani that combines a nude nail treatment base coat and skinny cream tips. “Our French Manicure Glow kit is perfect for this as it features Active Glow as the base colour, the shade Créme as the tip colour, which can be applied with extreme ease using our professional Liner Brush,” Personnaz says. “And finally the Sunshine Top Coat which seals the look with a gel-like finish…all while actually doing good for your nails.”

GET GUT FRIENDLY THIS CHRISTMAS
A
s Christmas draws closer and the fridge gets fuller, you may be looking for ways to alleviate some uncomfortable stomach and bowel problems that are common around Christmas time. But rather than reaching for the Rennie, Mr James Kinross has offered some advice to not only help your digestion over the festive period but stave off longer term problems that my occur. Why is Christmas Dinner an issue? Christmas is a time for overindulgence, both in terms of the quantities of food we eat as well as the quality of festive food. A sustained period of unhealthy eating affects the microbiome, our intestinal habitat of millions of microbes, their genomes and their surrounding environmental conditions, which requires a varied diet in order to function properly. Eating fatty foods and processed meats, like Christmas pigs in blankets, or having too much sugar doesn’t give the microbiome the diversity of nutrients it needs, which can take its toll on the body. Drinking too much alcohol has a similar effect. A diverse microbiome of friendly bacteria is important for our health because it prevents the 80 DECEMBER 2023
growth of pathogens that cause certain health conditions, but the gut microbiome also regulates many of our essential bodily functions that are needed for wellness. The gut has proven links to several serious health conditions including obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and may even affect certain mental health disorders. What colorectal complaints are patients making post-Christmas? A front-runner for post-Christmas complaints is weight gain and bloating. Increased consumption of fatty or sugary food automatically slows down digestion, and an unhealthy gut causes symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and bloating. Bloating can also be a sign of food intolerances and autoimmune conditions of the gut associated with gluten consumption such as coeliac disease. More rarely it is a sign of inflammatory diseases of the gut, such as Crohn’s disease or certain cancers such as stomach and colonic cancer. If you notice you’re bloating very often, or if it is especially painful, you should go and see a doctor. You should also seek help if you are experiencing symptoms such as weight loss or a

persistent change in your bowel habits. Over Christmas, many people consume more alcohol than usual. Alcohol also disrupts the balance of bacteria, and it changes the way that they function, causing inflammation. This has important implications for the health of the liver. How can you make some gut-friendly exchanges? The microbiome loves fibre, so aim to eat 30g per day. Incorporate a healthy plant-based diet into your traditional Christmas meals. Try adding vegetables such as Brussel sprouts, and if your Christmas plate of food has lots of colour it will be better for you. Have a fruit salad instead of mince pies or a Christmas pudding! Prepare your own food and avoid takeaway or ready meals and try not to snack. Socialising is an important method that the microbiome uses to maintain its diversity, and this has been hard through Covid. But getting together to eat with your family and friends will really help. Try and moderate your alcohol consumption
and make sure you’re drinking plenty of water if you do choose to enjoy alcohol during the party season. The gut microbiome prefers red wine to beer. You should really start to feel the benefits of these changes in just two weeks too, which bodes well for a happy new year!

Reasons the sofa is the most important
T
hink of one thing, anything, in an archetypal living room... Yes, we’re picturing a sofa too. Some pieces of furniture hold within them the power to transform. The sofa is one of these magical, room-changing design objects. It’s not just because they take up the most space or the alluring way they look, but how they make us feel and behave. The sofa epitomises tranquillity and switching-off. It’s committed to comfort, restfulness and unwinding - a physical declaration of me time, our time, down time, and nap time. The presence of a sofa brings the remainder of the living area together. The sofa needs an armchair or two. Now they need a rug. Next is a coffee table. What about a floor lamp? The sofa comes first; it pulls items around it into a group, serving as an anchor for the entire room, acting as the sun around which everything else revolves and draws energy from. Take a seat as we explore the sometimes surprising reasons that sofas are so uniquely impactful within the home, and the multifaceted roles the modern sofa plays. We’ll delve into the emotion tucked into the cushions and upholstery,
and discover how these seemingly simple pieces of furniture can shape our daily routines, host our most intimate conversations, and serve as supportive witnesses to our unfolding lives.
1 – SOFAS ADD STYLE AND CHARACTER As the largest furniture piece in a living room – an upholstered elephant in the room – the sofa automatically draws the eye. It contributes hugely to the aesthetic and feel, and can set the tone for the area’s overall style. The colour, upholstery and decorative choices of the modern sofa can be the defining elements that breathe life into a space – contemporary, colourful designs exuding modernity and energy, while classic forms in neutral palettes radiate timeless elegance and sophistication. Design and shape are just as important as the upholstery, with curves, angles, legs, arms and backs all narrating the style and story of the piece. These structural foundations can convey a sense of formality or familiarity, telling you whether to curl up and get cosy or sit upright for an official tete-a-tete, and turn the sofa into a beautiful sculptural object as well as a practical piece of seating. Pay attention to details like the legs, trim, and stitching, as these small-yet-significant touches often contribute to a high-quality, luxury feel, serving as a testament to the craft skills that went

piece of furniture into creating the piece, as well as enhancing the design’s overall appearance to give the seat a distinctive and luxurious edge. Sofas invite a finishing flourish for that extra flair. A contemporary sofa doesn’t feel complete without a selection of decorative cushions or a cosy throw positioned to be close at hand. Be they in colours, patterns or textures complementary to the body of the sofa and/or the room as a whole, or in contrasting styles, these little extras not only bring visual interest but also a personal touch to the piece making your sofa stylish, characterful and truly one-of-a-kind.
2 – SOFAS SHAPE THE ROOM’S LAYOUT As the main focal point in a room, a sofa’s placement significantly influences the space’s overall layout and dictates where people naturally gather. Whether placed against a wall or floating in the centre, a sofa’s positioning directs where people walk through the room as well as defining how light and air flow. The sofa is also vital to floor plans, its large size enabling it to divide rooms and create internal zones for different activities including living, dining, cooking or working. Other living furniture bows to the sofa, arranged in accordance to where it first settles. Accompanying pieces, such as coffee tables, side tables and lighting, follow and complement the sofa’s placement, building on it to create a balanced, functional space. The sofa’s orientation guides sitters’ attention to various views such as guests on the other side of the room, spots of natural light, or focal points like fireplaces, artwork, or Netflix’s latest must-watch. It’s not just about where you sit or what you’re sitting on; it’s about the world the sofa opens up for you to explore without even standing up. Now, the big question – should the sofa be against the wall or free- floating within the room? It all depends on the size of the area, and what you’re trying to achieve. A flush-to-the-wall set up can create an intimate, protected feel, while a floating seat helps to define open space and fosters a sense of fluidity.
it. It should be somewhere to slump, curl up and get cosy. It should support the back and arms. It should offer sleeping opportunities. Storage should be nearby, perhaps integrated? It should be snuggly. It should be cooling. It should create personal space. It should bring people together. The list goes on and on and on. The result? The modern sofa is the epitome of versatility, with modular designs becoming increasingly popular for their customisable aspects, so each sofa can be rearranged and configured to suit the space it’s in and the function needed from it. These designs can spread through rooms and around corners to create expansive, sociable seating areas as well as form compact loveseats and single person chairs. Interchangeable modules can be added such as: hard surfaces and storage, footstools, and different shaped arms or backs to meet multiple ever-changing needs. The style of the sofa can now also be edited, with pieces often available in a huge library of different colours, textures, materials and patterns to suit a wide range of interiors, and with smaller elements such as legs and cushions easily swappable for alternates. The modern sofa has become an expression of individuality, the same base design adaptable to create options spanning a high- backed sleek leather and chrome L shape to a low-slung floral and timber two-seater, offering limitless possibilities for tailoring its style and coordinating its look with diverse tastes and interior aesthetics. chaplins.co.uk

CURATED HOMES WITH A PRACTICAL FOCUS M indful Minimalism is going to be big news in 2024, according to independent tile specialists Porcelain Superstore. The retailer – which specialises in beautiful porcelain and ceramic tiles – believe homeowners are going to be taking a more curated view when it comes to designing their living spaces, prioritising homewares with a purpose as well as aesthetic appeal. Abbas Youssefi, Director of Porcelain Superstore, said: “Minimalism was a huge trend 20 years ago. But as more people started welcoming the world into their homes via social media, it brought with it a maximalist shift in an attempt to wow.
“Homeowners are going to be taking a more curated view when it comes to designing their living spaces, prioritising homewares with a purpose as well as aesthetic appeal”
“But now we are seeing a move to a more considered approach. Homeowners are looking for calm and are buying with intention, finding pieces that look great and serve a purpose. We are not going to see a return to the starkness of noughties minimalism, instead we are looking at a more mindful approach.” Typified by clean lines, natural materials and more neutral shades, Mindful Minimalism is all about living more intentionally – investing in timeless pieces that will last. Here Abbas picks his favourite designs from Porcelain Superstore’s collections – all of which will inject a dose of Mindful Minimalism wherever they are used.

The Eco Tile & Paint Edit: Sustainable Picks From Ca’ Pietra
Sustainable and proud, that’s what these six picks say loudly and clearly. Whether your home is a haven for all things consciously sourced or you’re someone trying to do that bit more, the Ca’ Pietra collection has got you covered. From carbon-neutral tiles created in cutting edge workshops to reclaimed tiles giving materials a second chance at life, we’re always looking at ways to make our tiles as eco as possible. Who’s with us?
Natural Stone Everything The OG tile material, natural stone is a classic, and a complete superstar when it comes to sustainability. It’s about longevity and the wholelife carbon impact natural stone tiles have on the planet – typically very little. Natural stone tiles – slate, marble, limestone, terracotta and the such – last the course in every respect. They’re solid, they’re sturdy, they won’t let you down, and they always, always look good. Timeless is the word, and once laid, they can stay in place for a lifetime and longer. Ultimately, natural stone tiles are there to make a stand to throw-away culture, so lay them on floors, run them up walls and take them to your garden with planet-friendly pride.
Our Head of Creative, Grazzie Wilson, takes a look at her top picks...
Our Recycled Reform Collection 36 tactile tiles make up our game-changing Reform collection, all made from 60% recycled stone content AND, to make them more sustainable still, in a carbon-neutral factory. These are double-

whammy do-good tiles. They were soon snapped up by the likes of planet-conscious fashion brand Rixo who used two pastel Reform tiles in a chequerboard across their flagship store in London. Three sizes, 12 shades, and ready to be used across walls and floors, Reform is proof that sustainability looks and feels good. Planet-kind Pumice Terrazzo Tiles don’t get more chic than Italian-style terrazzo, whether the natural version of a porcelain ode to terrazzo like the Pumice collection. With two neutral versions to choose from, this micro collection contributes to the sustainability crusade by its makeup – 40% of which is from recycled materials.
Recycled Glass Tiles from Brasserie Porcelain, ceramic, natural stone – they’re the go-to materials you first think of in the world of tiles. But don’t go forgetting the underdog – glass tiles. Our Brasserie glass tiles are crafted not just from any glass, but recycled glass, meaning there’s no demand on the planet for extra materials to be sourced or formed, making use of what’s already out there and breathing new (and beautiful life) right back into it. Hexagonal mosaic tiles that are richly colored and that glimmer gorgeously on walls and floors? YES PLEASE. Rich and Reclaimed Terracotta Terracotta has to be one of the earthiest tiles out there. Already doing good by being a natural stone tile, to tile with terracotta is to already tread sustainable steps, but why not go one better? Enter reclaimed terracotta tiles. We’ve got two going on in our collection right now – the Antique Burgundy 100-year-old reclaimed French terracotta tiles and the Pavers reclaimed terracotta parquet and brick tiles. Stone Anthology Wallpaper Celebrating the beauty of marble in a sustainable way
S
tone Anthology is the first digital wallpaper created by marbling artist Natascha Maksimovic. A celebration of the Earth’s geological diversity, showcasing the immense beauty that can be found in the natural world. This wallpaper series is a sustainable alternative to costly stone, enjoying its beauty without the environmental impact. The marbled pieces of Stone Anthology have been kept and treasured by Natascha over the past five years. Each piece comes from a previous print run, having captured the memory of the project and moment of creation. Over time, Natascha has carefully curated these individual pieces, selecting and arranging them to form larger-scale artworks. The curation process involves considering various factors such as visual aesthetics, thematic colour palettes and narrative pattern flow Two colour-ways are available: • Anthology I is centred around blues, pinks, soft yellows, and lavender. These main colours are

Both sets interplay with these familiar colour and pattern textures. They have been designed to be applied as individual sets or can be interchanged to create a wider variety of patterns in largescale projects. This flexibility allows for creative experimentation and customisation. Available at natmaks.com
