That role has been taken over by RHS Hilltop: The Home of Gardening Science. So the Old Laboratory has been renovated and from 20th March will welcome visitors to share its stories. PARKSIDE SCHOOL
In today’s rapidly evolving world, education must adapt to keep pace with the everchanging demands of the future. Amidst this need for transformation, Parkside School has emerged as a shining example of a School committed to innovative learning. With their unwavering dedication to embracing new teaching methods, leveraging technology and fostering creativity, Parkside School stands at the forefront of educational excellence, preparing its pupils for a future full of promise and opportunity.
Parkside School recognises that the one-sizefits-all approach to education is no longer effective in a world where diversity and individuality are to be embraced. So they have taken bold steps to implement and adopt new teaching methods that cater to the unique learning styles and needs of every child. From curiosity led and skills-based learning to collaborative group activities, Parkside School creates a learning environment where critical thinking, problem-solving skills and a genuine passion for learning are the ‘norm’. By integrating interactive and hands-on experiences into their curriculum, the School creates an environment that sparks curiosity and nurtures a love for learning.
Technology has become an integral part of our lives and Parkside School recognises its importance in enhancing learning. The School has made significant investments in state-ofthe-art educational technology, such as Virtual Reality (VR) headsets and embracing the benefits of Artificial Intelligence (AI), by promoting its appropriate usage rather than forbidding it. This ensures that the pupils have access to the tools and resources necessary for a modern education.
They seamlessly integrate technology into their classrooms, allowing pupils to explore concepts in a dynamic and engaging manner. Parkside School’s dedication to innovative learning and development of interpersonal skills sets it apart as a beacon of educational excellence. This was recognised in their most recent ISI Inspection Report, September 2022, which deemed the School to be “excellent” in all areas. The report attributed its success to its focus on creative teaching, an innovative curriculum and a dedication to individual, personal development. This begins in Nursery and culminates in Year 8, when the pupils move on to their chosen Senior Schools. Parkside School has just enjoyed its best set of Common Entrance exam results and has been shortlisted for the Best Independent Prep School of the Year 2023. As the world continues to evolve at a rapid pace, Parkside’s commitment to innovation ensures that its pupils are wellequipped to navigate the complexities of the modern world, shaping them into empowered individuals ready to make a positive impact in an ever-evolving world.

Westminster Security LONDON WATCH THEFTS
to street gangs…there are spotters at luxury retailers, high-end bars, and restaurants preying on vulnerable watch owners. The obvious deterrent is to leave your watch at home in a safe, or even wear a replica and freely hand it over if attacked. However, if you insist on wearing your luxury watch you must realise you are making yourself a target.”
Unfortunately, London has become the epicentre of a watch theft epidemic where violent and often armed assailants are mugging unsuspecting luxury watch owners in the streets for their expensive timepieces. In 2022 there were over 6,000 reported watch thefts in London with an average value of £9,000, around £54m worth stolen last year alone. And 2023 is shaping up to be much worse.
So, what can you do to protect yourself in these testing times? We spoke to John Moore, Managing Director of Westminster Security Ltd, a world-leading personal protection company based in central London. John said: “Sadly, this is the world we now live in. Watch theft is more lucrative than other crimes and there is little deterrent
John advised: “Don’t get too intoxicated, don’t trust a stranger who is suddenly taking a lot of interest in befriending you, don’t walk alone, and always remain aware of your surroundings. If followed, run for help if you can, if attacked hand over your watch it is not worth dying for. Make sure your watch is insured and have it valued each year.”
How can Westminster Security help? “We provide discreet close protection operatives (bodyguards) to accompany or shadow our clients on nights out, watching their backs and those around them; for us, it is second nature spotting undesirables up to no good. We have thwarted many potential situations, and not always directly for our clients but their friends, colleagues, and other venue patrons.”
How much does a bodyguard cost? “Some clients spend several hundred or thousands on a bottle of champagne on a night out, we are not that expensive but if you can afford a luxury lifestyle it is worth paying for peace of mind”.

Kathryn says that the most important thing is to match what people need (physically, financially and emotionally) with the right hotel. ”Some people want activity, others want complete rest. Some want to meet others, others don’t want to talk to a soul! Some want the structure of a schedule, others want complete freedom to make their own choices. Some want to detox, others want to start the day with coffee and finish it with wine”.
After 20 years in the business, Kathryn and her team know how to guide every customer towards their own ideal wellness escape. It’s an investment in yourself that can transform how you feel for months after, so if you’re planning a reboot, take time to get some expert advice.
Autumn can feel like quite a pressured time of year. Stresses can creep in and we may feel a little sluggish physically after an over-indulgent summer. It’s a great time of year to build in some time to escape to give yourself a physical ‘reset’. A wellness holiday can do just this.
“A wellness holiday can be tailored to any needs”, says Kathryn Brierley, founder of The Healthy Holiday Company. “Life has become too fast, too stressful and we all need to find time to press pause and focus on our own wellbeing so that we can deal mentally and physically with everything that is thrown at us.”
Some of her clients want to lose weight and detox with medical expertise, others want to work on their fitness, pilates or yoga, while some just want to move between sunbed and massage table.
So what does Kathryn recommend?
“Kamalaya and Chiva Som in Thailand are stunning options, which offer all-round wellness programmes. The Ananda in India, Santani in Sri Lanka and Shanti Maurice in Mauritius can offer blissful Ayurveda, spa and yoga escapes. THE WORLD’S BIGGEST SCHOOLS SHOW IS BACK
Step into the most exciting school in England
more public school than sixth form college, but smaller and less institutional – more boutique than department store.
At the moment it’s in a class of its own but one suspects that one day soon there will be more schools like this, because five years is a long time to be in one public school, and so many boys and girls are now ready at 16 for a fresh challenge and a more stimulating life. A lot of parents agree wholeheartedly. As one satisfied customer puts it: “We have had four children through the public school system and I think that Hurtwood House is the only one which has really delivered what it promised.”
Although it has all the facilities of a typical public school, Hurtwood House specialises exclusively in the sixth form and the age range 16-18. Changing schools at 16 opens up a whole new world of fresh experiences and challenges and provides the perfect steppingstone between school and university. Hurtwood House is young, exciting and dynamic and, most importantly of all, it is exceptionally creative with drama, media, art, textiles, dance, music and singing to die for.
Famous former students include Oscar-winner Hans Zimmer (music for Gladiator, Rain Main, Lion King) and Golden Globe winner Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada, Gideon’s Daughter) and watch out for Hollywood hot-tip Jack Huston (Factory Girl). Zara Brownless (winner of the first Young Apprentice). But marvellous as the performing and creative arts are, this school is definitely not a one-trick pony. It also caters for the budding entrepreneur, doctor, lawyer, architect, etc etc etc with a range of subjects which, though less eye-catching, are no less successful and inspirational. Small wonder, then, that the world is beating a path to Hurtwood’s door, and one of the first things to strike visitors is that it has a completely different “campus” feel about it – not like school at all. That’s because there are no juniors – everybody here is 16+ and they all join after they have taken their GCSE’s. In many ways, it defies definition -

Indeed, Hurtwood has a file of letters as thick as your arm from grateful parents, and clearly what they appreciate most is that Hurtwood has given their children the confidence to cope with anything in life and has fired up their enthusiasm. “Her mind was turned on,” says one, “and her appetite for learning is voracious. I want you to know that you lit the fuse.”
Who could ask for anything more?

Academic Achievement at Longacre
Holiday work, Saturday morning tutors, revision courses, entry tests: the modern world seems to have decided that children’s academic progress needs to be at the cost of their worry-free childhood years. At Longacre, not only do we put fun and children’s happiness at the core of everything we do, but we can prove that these are fantastic conditions for children to fulfil their potential.
Rather than measuring our success in sheer outcomes, we work hard to look at children’s individual progress. We think about the value which we can add to a child’s life in academic terms and in the broader holistic sense. Improvement in children’s achievements is a function not just of academic ability: it is hugely affected by the environment the children are in, the quality of teaching, availability of resources, provision of extension opportunities and extra-curricular activities.
Staff regularly consider the emerging data plot at ‘pupil progress meetings’ and parents and guardians are invited to catch ups and parent workshops where we share our findings to highlight children’s trajectories. The nature of childhood learning is that the graph of progress tends to be more squiggly than consistent, needing steady monitoring rather than being set and predictable. Pastoral and Academic considerations go hand in hand.
The data shows that Longacre children, on average, achieve more than nine years of progress between years 1 and 6 in reading. Children typically perform 12% above the national average in maths. Classes of around 16 ensure that every child is seen for her or his unique self, never reduced to mere statistics. Timetabled forest school, music and drama as well as specialist languages, science and humanities teachers, ensure that the school day is rich and rounded. Children skip into school in the morning and don’t want to leave in the evenings; it really isn’t any wonder that they make such progress in their core academics.
With that happy base, the fundamental skills of building resilience and retaining natural curiosity can then be achieved. We are proud when we F.A.I.L (first attempt in learning) and are proud of our records, from scholarships and competitive school entry, to reigniting a spark in children who have lost their love of learning and overcoming difficulties such as dyslexia or shyness in making friends. Receiving the highest grade of ‘Excellent’ from the Independent Schools Inspectorate is a valuable endorsement of our work, but nothing says more than the happy families who are part of the Longacre community, and who tell their friends about us. Do come and visit if you want to see what it all looks like in reality, just don’t ask for any private tutor recommendations!

Autumn at Loseley Park
Loseley House is situated in 1,400 acres of glorious rolling countryside, just 3 miles south of Guildford in Surrey. The joy of Loseley House is that so little has changed, for the current house is still fundamentally that built in the 16th century. True there have been minor internal alterations – and an entire wing was added in the 17th century and then lost – but to all intents the house you see now would still be familiar to its original occupants.
The story of Loseley Park begins with the purchase of the Manor of Loseley during the reign of Henry VII. As Sheriff of Surrey and Sussex the purchaser, Sir Christopher More, was a man of considerable influence and power, yet it was his son, Sir William More, also a direct ancestor of the current owner, who first began building work in earnest.
As was common, much of the stone was reclaimed from earlier buildings, in Loseley’s case from the Cistercian Abbey of Waverley ten miles away at Farnham where ruins can still be seen. That honey-coloured monastic stone was fortunate, for it lends Loseley House a peaceful, deep and mellow mood that can still be felt, particularly on summer evenings.
In the centuries that followed the fortunes of the More-Molyneux family waxed and waned. As in every ancient family, there were unfortunate marriages and political successes, times of influences and times when it seemed the family and the house might finally be parted.
Yet the link remains unbroken. The 500 year story of the More-Molyneux family and their home at Loseley Park House continues – and visitors will find it as fascinating and compelling as any in British history.
Comparable with gardens considered national treasures, the Walled Garden covers 2.5 acres and is divided into ‘rooms’ each with its own unique planting scheme and personality.
There’s the Rose garden with over one thousand bushes, the Flower Garden with its maze of pathways and hidden corners and the White Garden that contrasts spectacular, showy, blooms with lush yet subtle silver and grey foliage. Then there is the extensive Herb Garden, the Organic Vegetable Garden with its unusual varieties and, just outside the walls, the wildflower meadow – a haven of calm and tranquillity.
Loseley House Gardens are open to the public throughout August. loseleypark.co.uk

BURBERRY How the brand evolved from humble raincoat maker to luxury fashion giant
Always one of the most eagerly awaited events at London Fashion Week, the Burberry catwalk show attracts A-list celebrities, high-profile fashion editors and the biggest influencers from around the world.
Last season, supermodel Naomi Campbell sat alongside Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Jason Statham on the front row to watch chief creative officer Daniel Lee unveil his debut collection, and expectations were high for the designer’s second show, which took place on September 18.
Coveted by consumers across the globe, the luxury label is perhaps the most famous British fashion brand, but it hasn’t always been such a hot property. We look back at the tumultuous history of Burberry…
ADVENTUROUS ORIGINS
The brand was founded in 1856 when 21-yearold former draper’s apprentice Thomas Burberry opened his first shop in Basingstoke, Hampshire. Focused on creating outerwear that shielded

wearers from typical British weather, the founder invented gabardine – a water-resistant but breathable fabric – and patented it in 1888.
“Prior to this, waterproof clothing was made of rubberised cotton which was cumbersome, not breathable and certainly not chic,” explains celebrity fashion stylist Miranda Holder.
“In contrast, garbadine’s individual fibres were waterproofed before the weaving process, creating a lighter, more fluid and comfortable piece.”
In early examples of celebrity endorsement, Norwegian explorer and zoologist Dr Fridtjof Nansen wore Burberry gabardine when he sailed to the Arctic Circle in 1893, while famed British explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton chose the outerwear for three expeditions in the early 1900s.
THE WAR YEARS
The now-iconic Burberry trench coat was invented during WWI with a range of features designed for military use – including the gun flap and D-rings to carry grenades – many of which remain today.
“Each classic Burberry trench is composed of 90 individual, specially shaped components,” says Savile Row tailor Alexandra Wood, founder of Alexandra Wood Bespoke.
“The key design elements include its doublebreasted front, shoulder epaulettes, beige colour, belted waist, buckled cuffs, storm flap, and a checked lining that the brand has become
synonymous with.”
The distinctive beige Burberry ‘nova check’ was introduced in the 1920s and is still used as a lining now, with the ever-popular trench coats retailing from around £1,500.
“The appeal of the Burberry trench has to be largely due to its adaptability,” says Holder.
“The coat’s pale beige colour perfectly lends itself to a myriad of different outfit options, and the flash of luxury lining – nova check or not –makes it instantly recognisable as a luxury piece.”
THE ROYAL SEAL OF APPROVAL
In 1955, Queen Elizabeth II granted Burberry a royal warrant as a weatherproofer, and by the Swinging Sixties business was booming, with the brand saying it made one in five coats exported from Britain.
The nova check graduated from discreet lining to designer status symbol, with coats, scarves and umbrellas in the beige print proving popular with shoppers in the Seventies.
In 1990, Burberry secured its second royal warrant, as an outfitter, from the now King.
NOUGHTIES NOTORIETY
After decades of success, the Burberry shine was tarnished when a more mainstream audience embraced nova check in the late 1990s, snapping up entry-level items and causing the brand to

discontinue sales of baseball caps.
“The pattern soon filtered down to the high streets and eventually the football terraces – it remains one of the most copied counterfeit designs today,” says Holder.
“As a result Burberry’s star fell hard, the brand losing any exclusivity it once had, being unable to control who wore the label.”
Paparazzi photos of Eastenders actress Danniella Westbrook in head to toe nova check were seen as the final nail in the coffin, she adds: “Danniella was getting a lot of very negative publicity at the time, relegating the designer to the bins of bad taste.”
THE CATWALK COMEBACK
Attempting to rehabilitate the brand as the new millennium dawned, Burberry opened its first store on upmarket Bond Street in 2000 and brought in 29-year-old Christopher Bailey as design director the following year.
“Christopher Bailey made a significant impact during his tenure as creative director by modernising Burberry’s image, introducing digital innovations, and collaborating with artists and musicians,” says Wood.
“It made Burberry fresher and more relevant and helped to make the brand have an edge, whilst remaining sympathetic to its crisp, British design aesthetic.”
Scaling back production of nova check, Bailey brought glamour to the brand and staged blockbuster catwalk shows with live music from artists such as Tom Odell and James Bay.
“He updated the classic trench, putting new twists on the heritage design and bringing in
supermodel Kate Moss to give it a new lease of life,” Holder says.
“Bailey successfully repositioned Burberry as an industry leader and innovator, and as a result, tickets to their catwalk shows were some of the most sought after on the London Fashion Week schedule.”
A-LIST APPEAL
Following the departure of Christopher Bailey with a memorable rainbow-themed catwalk show, Italian designer Riccardo Tisci was appointed chief creative officer at Burberry in 2018.
“Riccardo Tisci injected some younger, more contemporary energy into the aesthetic, which was a roaring success,” Holder says.
“Influenced by streetwear, his collections attracted younger fans who appreciated his edgier styles, despite critics pointing out a lack of continuity with the brand’s more traditional heritage.”
Tisci enlisted model friends such as Kendall Jenner and Irina Shayk to walk the runway and dressed stars including Nicki Minaj and Kate Moss for the Met Gala.
He also reintroduced nova check, much to the delight of celebrities and a new generation of Burberry fans.
Bradford-born Daniel Lee took over from Tisci and made his debut at London Fashion Week in February 2023.
The autumn/winter collection – which didn’t feature any beige trench coats – teamed sweeping coats and chunky knitwear with irreverent accessories like a woolly hat shaped like a duck and hot water bottles carried like clutch bags.

All the things you wanted to know about breast cancer but never dared ask
He says: “I see a lot of patients who are embarrassed to ask me questions. But I always encourage them to discuss whatever’s on their mind, rather than searching the internet for answers, where there’s plenty of misinformation and myths. It’s always best to speak to a medical professional if you have any concerns.”
If a family member has had breast cancer, will I get it too?
There are lots of different risk factors for breast cancer. Some of these factors are genetic and
some are environmental, so often it’s hard to say exactly why someone has developed a cancer - it could be due to multiple factors.
There are some genetic factors that we do know about - for example some families carry the BRCA 1 or 2 genes which raise the risk of some cancers, including breast and ovarian cancer in women and male breast cancer and prostate cancer in men.
If you have potential breast cancer symptoms and there is a history of breast, ovarian, prostate or pancreatic cancer in your family, it’s definitely worth seeking medical advice.
82 OCTOBER 2023 FASHION, HEALTH & BEAUTY
This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Mr Daniel Leff, Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon at King Edward VII’s Hospital answers all the questions you are too scared to ask.
“There are lots of different risk factors for breast cancer. Some of these factors are genetic and some are environmental”
I’ve heard that being on the contraceptive pill (or taking HRT) could give you breast cancer?
There is some scientific research showing that people who take the contraceptive pill have a slightly higher chance of being diagnosed with breast cancer than people who have never taken it. But there are lots of other factors involved, including your family history as well as lifestyle factors such as the amount of alcohol you drink, being overweight, or previously having had radiation therapy.
There are some studies that show a link between taking HRT and a slightly increased risk of developing breast cancer in post-menopausal women - but only if you have taken it for longer than a year. And this risk starts to decrease when you stop taking it.
Should people who have had breast augmentation surgery be more worried?
There’s not enough evidence to know whether breast implants are a risk factor in breast cancer.
But a myth that I often hear is that breast implants make it impossible to detect or diagnose breast cancer. Happily, this is completely untrue.
When it comes to self-examinations though, there are some different techniques to use. For example, people who have breast implants may want to lie down and feel for the implant, then feel carefully and gently for their ribs underneath to check for lumps.
When standing, it’s important to check for changes to the appearance of the breasts such as swelling, colour changes, rashes or puckering, by looking in the mirror. Try this both with arms raised and arms by the sides to help check for changes.
Is it true that mammograms don’t work on younger people?
Breast cancer mainly occurs in people over 50, and it’s rare in people in their 20s and 30s, but that doesn’t mean that younger people shouldn’t be vigilant. The majority of lumps in younger people are totally benign lumps called fibroadenomaswhich may feel hard and rubbery - but your GP may refer you to a breast clinic for a scan or biopsy to make sure.
It is true that mammograms are used more to diagnose breast cancer in older patients - because the breast tissue tends to be less dense, making
it easier to detect on the mammogram. But we have lots of other very successful techniques to diagnose breast cancer in younger patients, such as ultrasound examinations.
Is it harder to spot breast cancer when you’re pregnant or just had a baby?
There are lots of changes to the breasts during pregnancy and some women might notice new lumps in their breasts, or have discharge from the nipples that is either milky or bloody. Most of the time, this is completely normal, but it’s still really important to check your breasts regularly even while pregnant or breast-feeding. Don’t assume that any new lumps or bumps are just associated with pregnancy or breast-feeding, and look out for other signs such as a lump or swelling in the armpit, a sunken nipple, dimpling or puckering of the skin or a rash on one breast.

Porcelain Superstore launches two contemporary takes on a classic
Independent tile retailer Porcelain Superstore has launched two contemporary takes on the classic metro tile.
The family-run tile specialists have added two new collections that offer a new spin on an old favourite. The Picket and Society ranges are a perfect marriage of old and new. They each boast the simple style of the timeless metro tile, but the added embossed border gives them a contemporary edge.
While Society – which comes in three different colours – is a traditional rectangle, Picket – which is available in two colourways – is a thin hexagonal beauty.
Abbas Youssefi, Managing Director of Porcelain Superstore, said: “There is a reason metro tiles have become a beloved classic and Picket and Society take all the Victorian charm and adds a little 21st century magic, including picture frame edges and small format adding charm and character wherever they are used.”

HOW TO FUTUREPROOF YOUR KITCHEN DESIGN
Anew kitchen is arguably one the biggest renovation investments within a home and is not something that many can afford to do more than once, or perhaps twice, in their lifetime.
Unsurprisingly, in a 2023 study conducted by leading platform for home renovation and design, Houzz, it was found that 43% of homeowners believe they opted for a timeless design as a sustainable choice during renovation, thus avoiding the pitfalls of being influenced by the ebb and flow of short-lived trends.
Sinead Trainor, Kitchen Category Manager at British Kitchen brand LochAnna Kitchens draws upon her wealth of experience to share five key design considerations that can help make your kitchen design stand the test of time.
CHOOSE COLOUR CAREFULLY
Selecting a colour for your kitchen cabinetry can be daunting, especially since it will likely be part of the home for several years. When aiming to create a kitchen that feels timeless, it is important to find a balance between a hue that feels modern yet
retains an aspect of class and simplicity. Neutrals such as off whites, pebble greys, and soft beiges are excellent for achieving this effect. When it comes to colour, we all have our own preferences, but if you’re struggling with where to start, a good rule of thumb is to avoid over using stark, brilliant whites as they can bring a cold, clinical feeling to the space. Equally, try and steer clear of using overly warm neutrals as these can make the space feel confined and dated, alluding to the trends of yesteryear. If you are someone who can’t say no to colour, but are still looking for a timeless look, try to aim for simple, traditional shades such as pale blue, navy or an earthy green for a more muted look that doesn’t threaten the kitchen’s long-term credentials. If you are a lover of deeper tones, you could also experiment with rich black cabinetry in especially large or well-lit rooms for a touch of timeless drama and sophistication.
BALANCE OF MATERIALS
Designing a kitchen that is heavy-handed on its use of modern, engineered materials such as laminate and stainless steel, may look outdated in a number of years. Equally, a kitchen featuring a heavy use of more traditional and rustic materials like wood

Five expert tips from LochAnna Kitchens
LochAnna Kitchens
“When aiming to create a kitchen that feels timeless, it is important to find a balance between a hue that feels modern yet retains an aspect of class and simplicity”
and stone can age it from the get-go. By balancing both kinds of materials, you retain an element of the new and the old, creating a timeless feel. For example, modern painted cabinetry is a great way to break up a rustic wooden floor. Similarly having a real stone worktop as the anchor of your room will add an element of timelessness and halo effect on the other materials in use around it. Remember to include shades, colours and textures that complement one another, as overcomplicating material selection will make it harder to visually achieve a sense of consistency and in turn, a natural, relaxing feel.
OPT FOR CLASSIC CABINETRY FOR LONGEVITY
Kitchen trends are emerging faster than ever, which is why creating a design that has a neutral base can be hugely beneficial. You can’t go wrong with a traditional shaker-style or contemporary, flat fronted cabinetry in either a natural wood or painted finish as these have been in style for centuries and continue to be popular. Sticking to a neutral base also allows for more possibilities when it comes to personalising other aspects of the kitchen like hardware, upholstery and décor, as neutral tones go with most things. At LochAnna, some of our cabinetry can be sanded down and repainted, taking some of the pressure and finality of decisions away in case you ever change your mind down the line
THINK TO THE FUTURE
When planning a kitchen, it is key to consider how the layout you select will impact future use for any additions to the family or household as well as just getting older. Accessibility is an often-overlooked aspect in the kitchen, but a consideration of this from the start makes for a much more userfriendly space in years to come. It is also important to think about where appliances are in correlation to each other and in particular your sink, oven, and fridge. Balancing the placement of these three core elements of the working triangle is vital. Working with a specialist kitchen designer is always recommended if you are struggling to devise a layout tailored to your personal lifestyle and routine.
ADD YOUR STAMP
Ultimately, you should make sure you’re choosing what makes you happy. Combining practical, kitchen design tips with your own personal aesthetic preferences included is a win win. It’s about balance; otherwise, you are simply renting from the next owner of your home! LochAnna Kitchens provide a full colour matching service, where the customer can provide a specific hue or even an object to replicate across their cabinetry. 01204 328720

The Look of Lux
The new collection from The Baked Tile Company might just offer the perfect solution.
The Marble Lux collection brings together the aesthetic appeal of real marble without the ‘real marble’ price tag.
Manufactured from premium porcelain, these 9.2mm thick large format tiles will bring opulence wherever they are placed. Intricate veining detail and an ultra-polished finish only add to the appeal.
But what really makes this collection special is its intricate pattern, which ensures perfect symmetry.
Lesley Taylor, Founder of The Baked Tile Company, said: “Marble has long been the go-to for luxury interiors. But if you want that opulent finish, you’re going to have to put the work in. Marble tiles require constant maintenance and are incredibly expensive.
“The Marble Lux collection is made up of porcelain beauties that have the same appearance of marble, but are fuss free and really easy to keep in top condition.
“Marble Lux is a visually striking book-matched design, which creates a really impressive feature in any space.”

THE CHAPLINS SHELF-HELP GUIDE: 7 styling secrets to boost your bookcase
From the floating to the freestanding, the room dividing to the flush-againstthe-wall, despite their light framework and generally slimline designs, shelving systems and bookcases are hugely impactful pieces of furniture, well worth putting some time and thought into.
Modern homes have become less about pure good looks and more about the art of telling stories and creating personal narratives – now’s the time to gather the objects that mean the most to you and put them where you can feel their positivity every day. New shelves are a great opportunity to browse the house and compose a new collection combining the items you find within.
There are no rules regarding what you put on display. Large, small, old, new, useful, decorative, colourful, muted, hand crafted, machined… bring it all together and start from there.
The first thing to do, whether you’re working with a box-fresh new piece of storage or refreshing something existing, is to start from scratch: empty it. There’s no other way. Once you have a blank slate, then the decisions begin.
What’s the shelf for? Practical storage, or a beautiful, decorative addition to the room? Is it about aesthetics, or expression? What type of atmosphere do you want to create?
Set the mood layer by layer, ledge by ledge with our professional styling methods and strategies to create a contemporary shelving display, and artfully showcase everything from treasured collections and works of art to plants, books and beyond.
MIX MATERIALS AND TEXTURES
Melding different textures and materials on the shelf top, from paper to ceramics, wood, glass and metal, adds a pleasing element of contrast to a space – either place objects on the shelves that juxtapose each other to create interest, or have the whole shelving system differing from the room itself for larger impact and to make the shelf a standout design feature. Texture – the more tactile the better – also brings a warm and cosy feel, and
placing high contrast surfaces side by side (say, a high gloss finish next to a rough ceramic) ups visual appeal and intrigue.
INTRODUCE ILLUMINATION
Using shelving with built-in lighting, or including a free-standing light on a shelf has many more pros other than simply increasing visibility. Lighting adds depth and dimension, cultivating visual interest while emphasizing the threedimensional nature of the structure. As well as creating ambiance – warm tones equal cosiness, cool coloured bulbs are energetic. Lights can also draw focus to certain pieces so they stand out, and make collections looks even more impressive – and when turned off, built-in lighting becomes invisible while lamps become beautiful sculptures.
STRIKE A BALANCE
When putting your shelving arrangement together, it’s important to bear balance and proportion
106 OCTOBER 2023 HOME & PROPERTY
in mind – carefully considering the layout and placement of items will make it easier for your collection to harmonise. For a modern, diverse feel, play with scale and emphasize variety (rather than grouping similar styles together), varying the heights, sizes, shapes and materials on each level and across the width of every shelf – aim for casual asymmetry. Generally, larger objects are happiest on the lower section of the shelves, with the lighter and smaller pieces up top – but don’t be afraid to break this rule every now and then for a freer and more contemporary aesthetic.
MASTER THE MINIMALIST MINDSET
A sparsely populated shelf speaks of curation and confidence, and decorating with a small number of favourite objects turns all the attention to them as refined focal points. While it’s tempting to fill a shelf with beloved items (or unconsciously add to the collection here and there), going for a reduced, minimalist selection lets each piece standout and shine, turning the shelves into a chic, composed selection. Each object has enough space to breathe, and becomes more meaningful and respected by the room afforded to it.
LET CREATIVITY FLOW
When are shelves not shelves? When they’re a mini, in-house, private art gallery. Shelving is the place for creative collections – from paintings, prints and photography to sculptures and beautiful, beguiling objets, shelving offers the opportunity for organised, easy curation and display. An art-filled shelf not only prompts meaningful conversations, but is an outlet for self-expression, the display reflecting your personal style, individuality and making the space truly unique – and bringing a daily dose of delight.
TELL YOUR TALE
Shelving is the ideal space to showcase who you are through the objects that narrate your life. As well as visibly sharing your story, personality, interests and experiences with visitors, placing personal mementoes on show has a deeper effect too; being surrounded by memories evokes nostalgia and positive emotions, creating an ambiance that’s emotionally rich, uplifting and positive. Sentimental items are reminders of experiences, people and achievements – keeping them visible preserves those memories, fostering a home environment that feels warm and that you’re strongly connected to.
EDIT, EDIT, EDIT
We all get a little bored with our decor, and shelving’s inherent flexibility means that it’s as easy as lifting-up and placing-down to refresh a wall and the atmosphere of the whole room. Objects can be rotated, swapped out or updated in an instant. Taste changed? New season? Things getting cluttered? It’s no problem on the shelf, the controlled spacing so naturally lending itself to neatness and organisation. Having an ever-evolving collection on show keeps the display dynamic unexpected and endlessly appealing, keeps the space fresh and aligns the area with who you are and how you want to express yourself. chaplins.co.uk

If the last ten years have taught Wallsauce anything, it’s that people like to bring the outdoors in. In particular, the Jungle Paradise mural will become even more popular! Its mellow colour palette offers a stylish design that homeowners can easily style.

7 IDEAS TO ADD CURB APPEAL TO YOUR FRONT DOOR
Whether you’re thinking of selling or just want a fresh new look, the team at Falchi Interiors suggest ways to update your doorway.
black: “I love the impact! This wouldn’t work for an enclosed door space but I have a large porch to set it off.” Other ideas are on point bronze or something with a hand-made look. And don’t forget your house numbers.
5. Change the lighting
Security lights are functional, but to set a mood, begin with a hanging lantern or a pair of wall mounted lights. Think big, this is one place where you can afford to exaggerate scale. Try adding layers: step lights, spots on architectural features, candle lanterns or even lighting set into planters.
6. Add a seat … .. whether it’s somewhere to put the shopping, find your keys or take a breath. This could be a stool, a box seat or a feature chair. Use it to add character and style to your porch but keep it practical, too.
1. Change the colour
Consider a statement colour such as bright red, electric blue or, this year’s favourite, Barbiepink. Not for you? Then a subtle elegant colour, perhaps, such as foliage green or charcoal grey. Recent estate agent surveys have revealed that homes with a charcoal grey or black door on average sell for more than expected.
2. Add planting
Choose perennials or artificial. If you have the space, layer those plants, tall at the back to ground cover at the front. Think about adding pots of bulbs in spring or your favourite flowering plants for the summer. Brushing past something scented - rosemary or orange trees – will provide an uplift.
3. Welcome mats
Don’t forget the doormat. Use it to add colour, ring the changes without spending a fortune and express a bit of personality.
4. Upgrade the hardware
Marion Falchi, our creative director, swapped silver door furniture on a blue door to black on
7. Extend the reach of your front door Easiest is to set a couple of large urns or planters to the outside boundaries of the door but if you want to go a bit further invest in some creative brickwork or even a porch. falchiinteriors.com

Upside down maisonette has the wow factor
Many people aren’t aware that a loft conversion can be carried out on maisonettes but as John Allen from Econoloft explains, providing it is done well, a loft conversion can transform this type of property.
“A maisonette can be surprisingly spacious,” he said. “However, a large part of the footprint of the home is going to waste, namely the loft!”
FROM ONE FLOOR TO TWO!
One family from Bromley lived in a maisonette property which comprised a front room, kitchen, bathroom and two bedrooms across one floor. They needed more space and and although they did look at moving home to get additional room, they soon realised it would be a very
expensive move.
Instead, they had an Econoloft loft conversion which transformed their unused loft into a luxurious, spacious living space comprising a kitchen, dining area and lounge. The customers stamped their personality on the space with white walls, spotlights, wooden floors and contemporary furnishings to create a modern and welcoming family area.
The original floor of the maisonette has also been developed and features three bedrooms, a new bathroom and a utility room giving the family two floors of living space to enjoy.
John said: “Like many of our customers this Bromley family could not believe the space they had in the attic which had been wasted for so many years. Now they love their new home which has provided enough space for them to grow at a fraction of the cost of moving home.”
Econoloft only builds loft conversions and with 40 years’ experience you are assured peace of mind. Unlock the potential of your loft.
ECONOLOFT EXPERT TIP
Although you don’t need planning permission for most loft conversions, you may need it on a flat or maisonette, particularly if you intend to extend or alter the roof space. You should also check whether you own the roof space and leaseholders may need permission.

New research shows homeowners have one subject on their mind, according to eco paint specialist Victory Colours: autumn.
Pinterest shows searches for the term ‘cozy autumn aesthetic’ are up 600% over a month, while searches ‘autumn bedroom’ and ‘autumn décor’ are up 200% and ‘autumn room’ is up 100% over the same period.

Victoria added: “Brooding blues are going to be one of the most popular shade this winter, and orange is a great shade to bring through some warmth. Orange and blues work beautifully together and will create a stunning interior scheme that wows.”

RACHEL USHER INTERIOR DESIGN
Creating immersive and bespoke luxury interiors
Designing an ultra-modern family home that has a strong architectural presence within a town which is steeped in Medieval history.
An inspiring, ultra-modern and unexpected interior scheme has been created by Rachel Usher and her team of interior architects and designers. The family’s brief was to create a sanctuary in which they could escape their busy lifestyles and entertain to use the large-scale space to it’s full potential. The re-design transformed their living area to create a new open-plan kitchen, dining, living and snug.
The Rachel Usher studio also re-designed the interior architecture including transforming the hallway, staircase and bathroom to ensure that the space flows seamlessly.
This unique family home is an unexpected juxtaposition against the backdrop of this historical context.
When the property was built, the family paid respect to the localities history by curating a home with an architectural palette compromising of natural stone and timber cladding to respect the Medieval association of the land and to reflect the materials used in a nearby castle.
The property’s scale and award-winning architecture challenged the design team to create an interior scheme that both enhanced the property as a whole and complemented the existing vernacular of the building.
Rachel Usher takes a human centric approach to all of the work that her studio delivers with
the intention of enhancing how the homeowners interact with their space. Unravelling how the flow of human activity works on a day to day basis in order to better understand how this reads against the opportunities for enhancing emotional connectivity within the home, this in turn will establish the creative direction for the design team. A compelling design was achieved through the re-imagination of the space, opening up existing apertures to maximise perspectives from differing viewpoints and flooding the space with an abundance of natural light.
Synonymous with a Rachel Usher Interior Design is the interaction of materials evident throughout all of the bespoke hand-crafted joinery, including shadow gap detailing and hidden light sources to highlight texture and contrast. The final scheme was brought together with the appropriate application of light, texture and materiality.

AUTUMN IS NATURE’S PLANTING SEASON
It really is the best time to get planting. The soil temperature is at its peak after the summer sun which creates the perfect environment for root growth. With additional moisture from autumn rain, plants and trees use the autumn months to get established before winter sets in. This is good news for the gardener as it means watering isn’t as necessary as the drier months in spring and summer.
Herbaceous perennials might look a little worse for wear at this time of the year but plant them now and they will reward you next year with very little effort.
The autumn is also the perfect time for planting fruit, both soft fruit (including raspberries, blackberries, gooseberries and rhubarb) and fruit trees (such as apples, pears, plums and cherries). If you need help and advice choosing trees and plants for your outdoor space, Stubbings is a great place to call or visit. This hidden gem (with fantastic café) is located just to the west side of Maidenhead off the A404M, 5-10 minutes from both the M4 and M40.

seasonal interest with vibrant foliage for years to come. As they spend less time growing new leaves and seeds at this time of year, their efforts are focussed on creating a solid root system, ready for withstanding the colder winter months. The Woodland Trust website has some wonderful inspiration including a pick of the best UK native trees to add a glow to your garden this autumn.
It’s not just plants and trees that benefit from the autumn climate. Autumn is also the natural time to replace or repair your lawn. Whether you are seeding a new lawn or returfing, the autumn rains will ensure it gets the best start in life.
Don’t forget that autumn is the ideal time for planting spring flowering and summer flowering bulbs. These include daffodils, crocus, hyacinths, alliums, and lilies.

Transforming Old Pools
When we think about a luxury swimming pool, a new pool springs to mind. However, each year thousands of older pools are upgraded or remodelled by pool specialists. We use our skills and expertise to transform even badly damaged pools.
If you are looking at your old pool and wondering whether to refurbish or start from scratch with a new build, consider whether, overall, you still like your pool. If the answer is yes, refurbishment is an excellent way to modernise your old pool - it takes less time than building a new pool and costs less.
Pool refurbishment ranges from large-scale transformations of dilapidated pools to simple upgrades such as replacing an old or torn liner with a contemporary design that creates a beautiful new look for a pool.
You can restore anything on an older pool including the concrete, external and internal finishes, and underwater lights. You can upgrade plant room equipment including the water filtration and circulation system and heating systems which are vital to keeping the pool clean and healthy. Upgrading to modern, energy-efficient equipment is good for the pool, better for the environment and helps to reduce running costs.
While pool refurbishment is often required because of repair issues, it can also be an opportunity to remodel your pool. For instance, you can adapt you pool as your needs evolve. An older pool may become too small, too big, too shallow, or too deep for your needs 20 years after installation.
In addition to addressing the fundamental pool refurbishment, you can also look at adding fabulous new elements such as water features, hydro massage jets, underwater speakers or a counter-current unit which allows you to swim against a current.
“Pool
A well-planned pool update will create a fresh look and extend the life of the pool. A sprucedup pool will stay special for a long time, will rejuvenate your leisure time, and enhance the value of your property.
Hire a reputable pool contractor with a proven track record in pool refurbishment and work closely with them throughout the whole process. Once your beautifully refurbished pool is recommissioned, continue with a regular professional pool servicing programme to ensure that the pool remains healthy and is always ready to use. If the pool was out of action prior to refurbishment, arrange a regular pool servicing schedule. This way you can ensure your pool stays in peak condition.
