DIY probate – the hidden costs W
hen someone dies, you may be in charge of sorting out their estate in a process known as ‘probate’, which can be arduous and timeconsuming, taking months to complete. In 2017, the government launched an online service aiming to make the process easier. Its current key features include filling in an online statement of truth, so there is no requirement to swear an oath in person; paying fees online and the facility to save and return to your application rather than having to complete in one sitting.
When online applications aren’t always suitable Whilst online applications are useful, they are not suitable for every situation, particularly when it’s a more complex matter. Here are some examples: • Where there is more than one executor applying for probate. If one executor applies for probate on their own and chooses to have Power Reserved to them without notifying the other executors, this could make the situation very contentious and give rise to a dispute. • When the deceased died without making a will and intestacy rules apply. When this happens, the probate registry will always want to know in more detail about the deceased’s affairs which should be prepared by a lawyer in a statement of truth. A lawyer will also include what the order of entitlement is. • Where there is a foreign element. Lawyers will know which laws apply to which jurisdiction. Or if you are based outside England and Wales, you will need an expert within the jurisdiction to deal with matters for you. Lawyers also have contacts in many jurisdictions to ensure the right tax is paid in the right place and where tax relief can be claimed. • When there is a beneficiary dispute • Where there are multiple assets
Room for error Although applying online for probate simplifies some elements, there is still a lot of scope for personal applicants to make mistakes. Since the launch, many people have made errors on their application or haven’t claimed all the available inheritance tax exemptions and subsequently ended up paying the taxman huge amounts of money. Other errors can be made when obtaining valuations of assets and not knowing what the HMRC will accept, whereas lawyers have expertise in this area. An executor will also need to provide information on any lifetime gifts made in the last seven years as it affects the nil rate band and potential inheritance tax that may be attributable to those gifts. There are annual exemptions and a lawyer would be able to claim all the reliefs available, whereas a lay executor may not be aware of these. It’s also important to note that the HMRC is not 26 JUNE 2019
making tax rules any simpler. A lawyer can help you navigate the myriad of regulations to help you claim for tax relief.
Using a probate solicitor
“Although applying online for probate simplifies some elements, there is still a lot of scope for personal applicants to make mistakes”
How much this will cost, is probably a key concern when thinking about instructing a wills, trusts and probate lawyer. However, as this is one of the more important legal processes that you will ever go through – for example, a grant of probate is needed to sell most assets including a property - expert advice should be taken. Moreover, the forms to be submitted to HMRC are lengthy and are not always straightforward. This complexity can also escalate if additional information comes to light or there is a beneficiary dispute. These are situations where a solicitor’s advice would be invaluable. B P Collins offers a complete probate service – from tax and property advice through to Estate Administration affairs or a combination of any of these. If an executor collates the necessary information, our experienced lawyers can then deal with the completion of the inheritance tax pertaining to the grant of probate. We aim to provide our clients with the highest level of service no matter the value of the estate. A Midsummer Night’s Dream Chiltern Shakespeare Company 12-15 & 19-22 June 2019
T
o celebrate the 30th anniversary of performing at Hall Barn, Old Beaconsfield, Chiltern Shakespeare Company will be staging A Midsummer Night’s Dream – one of Shakespeare’s best known and loved plays. ‘The Dream’ portrays the events surrounding the marriage of Theseus, the Duke of Athens, to Hippolyta, the former queen of the Amazons. These include the adventures of four young Athenian lovers and a group of six amateur actors (the mechanicals) who are controlled and manipulated by the fairies who inhabit the forest in which most of the play is set. Confusion reigns… A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be staged on 12th-15th and 19th-22nd June at 8pm, with additional matinees on both Saturdays at 2pm. The grounds will open 2 hours before each performance. Ticket prices range from £19.00-£25.00 with concessions available for some performances. CSC is an amateur company with a highly respected reputation in the Chilterns and Thames Valley areas and their annual production is a firm fixture in the Beaconsfield calendar. Whilst its principal aim is to bring Shakespeare to life for all age groups, CSC is also committed to supporting local charities. Surplus funds from this year’s production will be donated to High Wycombe Lions in support of their project to facilitate the purchase of a dedicated response vehicle for the local Community First Responders. Hall Barn provides a wonderful quintessentially English parkland setting leading down to a lake. Many audience members take full advantage of the beautiful surroundings by having a picnic in the park before the performance. For those not wishing to bring their own food, a licensed refreshment marquee is on site and picnics may be pre-ordered. The actors perform in the open air on a grass stage against the backdrop of a 300 year old

sculpted yew hedge. The audience sits on raked seating in a tented auditorium and so is protected from the elements. This year, the seating will again be arranged on three sides of the stage to bring the audience as close as possible to the action. There is also limited wheelchair/disabled access (please ask when booking). A BSL signed performance is offered on Friday 14th June – again please let the Box Office know your requirements when booking. Full theatrical lighting and sound amplification are employed (including hearing loops). The ample parking is organised by the High Wycombe branch of The Lions who ask for voluntary contributions which all go directly to the chosen charity. Hall Barn is a 17th century country house and estate close to J2 of the M40.

Professor Mary Beard lends her support to a sixth form college T he world-renowned classicist, Professor Mary Beard of Newnham College Cambridge, has agreed to lend her support to The Henley College’s Classics and Ancient History department. Classical subjects have declined in popularity by 14.5% across the UK over the last five years, with a 12% drop between 2017 and 2018. The change compares to a change of -2.6% in all A-Level entries over the same period. (1). Less than 1% of all A levels taken in 2018 were in classical subjects (2). Professor Beard said, “It is increasingly rare for both Classics and Ancient History to be offered at A Level in the state sector. The Henley College is to be congratulated on offering such an unusually wide range of subjects, despite years of cuts to the education budget. It is refreshing that, in a climate where the education system seems to be increasingly geared towards science and technology, Henley is determined to continue to promote the arts. “The culture and art of the ancient world are so much part of our daily modern life that they are often taken for granted. They have inspired great works of art and literature, and fascinated generations of students. I am delighted if my support for the college can help raise the profile of Henley’s course provision, and enable any young person, irrespective of means, to discover and be beguiled by the wonderful world of Classics and Ancient History.”
30 JUNE 2019
Connie Hubbard, who studies both Classics and Ancient History at The Henley College said: “Henley was my only choice for A level, simply because it alone offered Classics and Ancient History. I didn’t know what Classics was at first, and was worried I’d need to be able to read Latin and ancient Greek. I was really pleased when learned I could study Greek and Roman epics and plays in English. “The modern translations are really readable. If you like Greek myths, you’ll love Classics. I have been interested in Ancient History since I began watching Horrible Histories when I was seven – it’s much more fun than studying the Weimar Republic. I am going to study Classics at university and have started teaching myself Latin in my study periods.”

The day’s other feature race is the Valiant Stakes, a Listed race for fillies and mares over the Classic distance of a mile. Saturday 27th July, QIPCO King George Day, is Ascot’s midsummer prestige event with its showpiece race the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes which has long been regarded as Europe’s premier midseason middle distance championship race for horses of both sexes and all ages. Stressbusting Surrey garden collaboration wins coveted silver-gilt medal at RHS Chelsea Flower Show
C
elebrating success at the UK’s most anticipated horticultural event of the year, the Silent Pool Gin Garden wins a prestigious silver-gilt medal at the Royal Horticultural Society’s world-famous Chelsea Flower Show 2019, where innovative design and horticultural expertise combine to showcase some of the country’s most exciting and inventive gardening feats. Blending the passion and expertise of David Neale of Neale Richards Garden Design and University of Surrey academics Professor Tony Myatt and Professor Richard Murphy, the Silent Pool Gin Garden takes inspiration from plant technologies and the greening of inner city spaces. Born from the vision to create a space that absorbs stress through scent, sound and sight, the garden also invites you to consider the making of gin, the inventive use of recycled materials and the power of plants to create energy. Many of the botanicals used in the making of gin are represented in the planting and symbolised by a single juniper bonsai tree given its own floating shelf on the garden wall, while a striking hanging seat gives a nod to the distillery’s copper stills. A Perspex teal water wall etched with Silent Pool’s signature botanicals forms part of the garden’s feature aqueduct. Director of the Centre for Environment and Sustainability Professor Richard Murphy said: “After

careful planning and exploring of new sustainable technologies, we are very excited to present our united efforts at RHS Chelsea Flower Show this week. “With the help of engineering students from SurreyEARS (the electronics and amateur radio student society), intricately installed sensors orchestrate Tony Myatt’s natural soundscape, triggering sounds of birds and insects in response to environmental changes in humidity, light, temperature and wind. This, coupled with live electricity generation from the plant microbial fuel cells, has been a brilliant way to engage, inform and intrigue visitors, encouraging an appreciation for plants and the significant role they can play in wellbeing and sustainability.” Ian McCulloch, Founder and Director of Silent Pool Distillers said: “By collaborating with NRGD and the University of Surrey, we were able to create a garden that truly engaged, informed and intrigued visitors in appreciating the critical role of plants to their own well-being, as well as the futures of others. This has been a truly exciting project and we are absolutely thrilled with the outcome.” Elements of the garden will now be donated to Silent Pool Distillers’ chosen charity, Cherry Trees, which provides home-from-home respite care for children and young adults with complex disabilities in East Clandon. www.silentpoolgin.com
The inspiration for the garden came after spending time in the Surrey Hills, a place of unrivalled tranquillity. We wanted to find a way of using plants and technology to allow everyone to enjoy that sense of calm, no matter their location.” – David Neale

ear 12 and going strong! There’s no stopping the enthusiasm of 1000’s of people who flock to the beautiful beaches of Sandbanks, Dorset, UK on the second weekend in July. What has become known as “The Sandbanks Weekend” or “The Sandbanks Festival in the sporting and social calendar of the South Coast of England continues to attract the crowds year after year. Curiosity brought people to watch high quality beach polo at Sandbanks for the first few years but since then the parties, hospitality, fashion shows and now a beach rugby element, not to mention the Sandfest music festival on the Sunday, has kept the audience guessing and wanting more. The heavily watered beach arena provides a firm playing surface, and when surrounded by elaborate marquees, staging and grandstands The British Beach Polo Championships, otherwise known as 38 JUNE 2019
Sandpolo has become a must go to event. With a ticketed capacity of 5000 on site the polo can also be enjoyed by spectators along the beach from a raised sand platform. This gives polo, over the 2-day event, exposure to a wide variety of people and business platforms. The polo, played under the authority of the Hurlingham Polo Association, attracts 4 competitive medium goal teams of 3 players. Each team plays on both days with a further exhibition game on the Saturday. International teams are welcome and bring an interesting dimension. The event has welcomed Australian, South African, Argentinian, Irish and Welsh teams amongst others. A charity race is held between the 2 fastest ponies on each day in aid of the Household Cavalry Foundation. The fashion show, held in the main marquee, is the transition from the polo and sporting activities to the epic after-parties. The show
“The beach parties that follow the day’s polo and the fashion show are a highlight for many”
features top designers from beach to leisure and evening wear. The beach parties that follow the day’s polo and the fashion show are a highlight for many. This year The House & Garage Orchestra, with incredible vocalists and DJs, will entertain guests until 1am at the Pure Polo party on the opening night. Radio 1’s Nick Grimshaw will host the closing Sandpolo Ocean Party on the Saturday. Tickets range from the Sandpolo Hospitality which gives holders access to the ringside dining marquee. Starting with a champagne reception guests enjoy a delicious 3 course lunch followed by afternoon tea and VIP access to the afterparties. VIP tickets are also extremely popular providing exclusive bars, loos and luxury seating overlooking the polo arena. Standard Sandpolo tickets still provide the level of service that most other events would class as VIP. The seating, beach food concessions, bars and all day and night entertainment amounts to a fantastic chic but relaxed event experience with something for everyone. Ty Temel and TML Events have recently teamed up with Sandpolo to run the event says ‘I am thrilled to be part of this unique venture. The location is priceless and the event format is sound. We have added some extra pizzazz this year that I know everyone will enjoy. Guests come along for many reasons whether it is the polo, the socialising, the parties, to see and/or be seen. Having been to the event for the last few years the one thing everyone has in common is that they all have a smile on their faces.’ Johnny Wheeler, the founder, is extremely grateful for the support Sandpolo receives from the
council, local residents and suppliers ‘it is a pleasure to work alongside the newly formed BCP Council. The events team are extremely helpful and see the value that we can bring to the area’. Generous sponsorship from established brands such as Sunseeker, Barclays Wealth, Audi and Oakley has ensured the quality of the event remains high and guests are treated to the highest level of service. With continued support from the local authorities Sandpolo will continue to adjust to the ever-changing social dynamic while staying true to its competitive polo roots. June recipe & kitchen news
E
nd of May and the beginning of June sees the fragrant mops of frothy white elderflowers adorning our hedgerows and fields. The elderflower is a very versatile plant for the home cook and professional alike. The flowers make an excellent flavoured cordial and later on the unpicked berries turn a deep dark purple and are a popular favourite for homemade wine. Avoid picking the
flowers from the roadside and are best picked on a hot sunny day when their heady perfume is at its maximum. This month’s recipe uses the flowers and can be made last minute or in advance to give you a delicious pudding which is quick, simple and above all tastes great, strawberries could also be replaced with raspberries and poached plump gooseberries when they come into season.
RECIPE: Lemon and Elderflower Posset with English Strawberry Compote Ingredients For the posset • 5 good sized elderflower heads in full bloom, picked away from the roadside, rinsed and main stalk removed • 900 ml double cream • 250 g caster sugar • Juice & zest 3 lemons For the strawberry compote • 500 g English strawberries stalks removed • 100 g icing sugar • Lemon juice to taste
Method 1. Boil the cream and sugar together in a heavy bottom pan for 2 to 3 minutes 2. On the last minute add the lemon juice, zest and elderflowers, leave to infuse till cool 3. Pass mixture through a fine sieve pressing gently to release the flavours 4. Pour the cream into 6 pretty glasses, refrigerate and leave to set Strawberry Compote 1. Slice 250 gm of the strawberries in half and blitz with the sugar till smooth 2. Quarter the remaining strawberries 3. Pass through a fine sieve then add lemon juice to taste and mix in the remaining strawberries gently To serve 1. Take your possets from the fridge and top your glasses with the strawberry compote and serve 2. A few individual flower heads make an attractive garnish and sable or shortbread biscuits served on the side will give you a great textural element to this dessert

his summer will see a little bit of Italy arrive in the capital as The Berkeley, Belgravia’s landmark hotel, creates ‘La Dolce Vita’, a lemon tree lined Italian haven on its roof. The hotel’s secluded garden and swimming pool will be home to the sights, tastes, charm and, of course, ‘amore’ of the Amalfi coast including Aperitivo hour complete with Bellinis, Aperol Spritz and Negronis. Sunseekers can visit the rooftop, usually reserved
for hotel guests, for a swim; a spot of sunbathing; a bite to eat from a classic Italian menu or experience an indulgent Dolce Vita spa treatment. This picture-perfect retreat, inspired by some of Italy’s legendary hotels from Il Pellicano to La Sirenuse, will provide a dreamy setting to enjoy the sunshine – citrus yellow and white striped sunbeds, lemon and olive trees, and an abundance of refreshing gelato or Sicilian homemade lemonade. Guests can feast poolside on fritto misto, tricolore salad, pizzetta and arancini, finished off with gelato or limoncello sorbet. As Aperitivo hour approaches, and the sun goes down, the pool and garden will be filled with the aroma and flickers of candles from the ‘elegante’ Italian house of Acqua di Parma. Those wishing to be pampered can indulge in the La Dolce Vita treatment designed by the spa to invigorate and prepare skin for the summer. Whilst tired feet are soaked with lemon salts, the face is cleansed, toned and revived with a hydrating mask. The body is exfoliated and gently nourished with lemon and rosemary oil from head to toe for beautiful skin and complete relaxation. La Dolce Vita at The Berkeley is open every day to hotel guests and visitors alike, until September, 2019. Access is subject to availability and must be pre-booked in advance. There are two package options; four hour access to La Dolce Vita (the rooftop garden and pool, sauna and steam room) including a glass of Aperol Spritz is priced at £75 per person. he Wimbledon dress code is serious business for its players. The all-white playing gear for competitors is strictly enforced to ensure that players don’t stand out for anything other than their excellent play. It is reported to be so strict the players even need to ensure that even their underwear is completely white. It may come as a surprise therefore that for tournament spectators there is no official dress code. In fact, sartorial requirements for visitors have relaxed in recent years with some notable exceptions which include torn jeans, running vests, dirty sneakers and even sports shorts. The unspoken rule is that attendees should ‘make an effort’, particularly if they’re heading to one of the hospitality areas. Visitors to the iconic centre court are still encouraged to ‘dress up’ for the more important games of the tournament. Men are expected to wear summer lounge suits or jacket & trousers with a shirt and tie. This is not dissimilar to what you might wear to an outdoor summer wedding. Just try not to spill the strawberries and cream down your tie. Andrew Gardner, The Tanyard, Tring Road, Wendover, Buckinghamshire HP22 6ND 01296 625488 www.andrewgardner.co.uk

Whether your goal is to improve your skin health, reduce fines lines and wrinkles, sculpt your body by removing stubborn pockets of fat, or simply to look less tired, our multi-award winning, surgeon-led clinic has a customised treatment plan for you. We believe the fundamental basis of a successful aesthetic procedure or skincare treatment is a good quality consultation with a skilled, qualified practitioner who fully understands your needs, and looks at your treatment as a journey, not a one-off event.
Then we tailor a treatment plan designed around your needs, goals and lifestyle. During your in-depth consultation, you have the opportunity to highlight any areas concerning you, whether these are skin conditions such as acne, pigmentation or rosacea, or worries about signs of ageing and a desire to rejuvenate your skin. Your skin will then be analysed by a state-of-the-art 3D digital skin imaging system called the VISIA, which takes surface and sub-surface images of your skin and develops a detailed complexion analysis.

Gum disease
This month we talk to Dr Kaplesh Bavisha who is a Specialist Periodontist at Rosebank Dental Practice in Chorleywood What is a Periodontist and why would I get referred to one? Periodontists are dentists who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of gum (periodontal) disease. They are also known as gum specialists To help you understand why specialist treatment might be needed, and how your teeth can be saved, this question & answers will tell you about some of the most frequently asked questions about gum treatment. What are the signs of gum disease? The signs of gum disease are bleeding, swollen gums, bad breath, gum recession, loose teeth, and gaps appearing between teeth, pus and eventual tooth loss. Gum disease is not always painful and therefore often goes unnoticed and undiagnosed. It may only become evident at an advanced stage, after loss of bone and gum. What causes gum disease? Bacteria (plaque), growing under the gums around your teeth, lead to gum disease. If left long enough, the plaque may solidify and form hard infected deposits on the tooth called calculus (tartar). If the infection persists then the gums detach from the tooth to form a pocket, with loss of jawbone and the ligaments that anchor the tooth to the jawbone. Unless treated, the tooth will become loose; you may end up losing the tooth. What is the purpose of gum treatment? Can gum disease be cured? The main purpose of treating your gums is to remove infection and prevent further gum and bone damage. Techniques are available to regenerate lost gum and bone around diseased teeth. What does gum treatment involve? How important is it to treat now or can I wait? Most treatment first involves scaling & deep cleaning of infected roots (placing a thin instrument between the gum and tooth). This is commonly referred to as non-surgical treatment. Your gums can be numbed for this, if necessary for your comfort. Many areas in your mouth can be expected to respond favourably. It is best to stop the disease process with treatment sooner rather than later. This helps to prevent further irreversible loss of your gums & bone. The number of visits needed depends on how much disease you have. It is also essential to help you with your plaque control. 64 JUNE 2019
Does gum treatment hurt? Will I need to take time off work after I have had treatment? No, modern techniques and equipment make gum treatment more comfortable now than ever before. Effective medications are available if needed to give you comfort after treatment without the need to take time off work. Our priority is to make your treatment a positive experience and as comfortable as possible. What happens after my treatment? Will I be free from more gum disease? Good plaque control at home and regular gum checkups are essential to keep gum health. Once you have demonstrated good plaque control and your tissues have responded favourably, you should return to your dentist for continued general dental health care maintenance. What can be done if I have advanced gum disease? Sometimes periodontal surgery is needed to get the best tissue response (i.e. no bleeding, gum reattachment). This is particularly the case where there has been advanced bone loss. Periodontal surgery involves numbing your gums and gently lifting them a bit so that we can reach the deeper parts of the roots to clean and remove toxins. Before we can proceed with this type of treatment, a high standard of plaque control is essential. What can be done if I have gum disease around a dental implant? (Also called peri-implantitis) If you have gum disease around a dental implant you need to get specialist help quickly, as bones can dissolve rapidly. Gum disease can occur around a dental implant for a variety of reasons. The Periodontist carefully assesses each situation and will discuss with you the best way to treat the infection. Thank you Dr Bavisha for taking the time to talk to our readers.

Peace of Mind A
t Thames Breast Clinic, we offer patients the peace of mind and assurance that comes with a rapid diagnosis, the very latest and best treatment options and the highest standard of guidance and care throughout the patient journey. Realistic NHS waiting times for diagnosis and treatment can cause a lot of anxiety and worry, prompting many patients to explore treatment privately. At Thames Breast Clinic we understand this and can provide immediate access to our local One-Stop Breast Diagnostic Clinics for both insured and selfpay patients. Even if you’ve already been diagnosed with breast cancer in the NHS, we are able to offer treatment commencing in a matter of days. Our clinics are based in Windsor, Gerrards Cross, Harrow and Harley Street.
The main features of our One Stop Breast Service are: • No GP referral required • Appointments within 24 hours • Thorough family history assessment and complete breast examination • State-of-the art digital imaging and ultrasonography. Where required, this is combined with 3D mammography and/ or a breast MRI • Multidisciplinary evaluation of each case by a team of Consultant Breast Specialists • Breast Care Nurse present throughout all consultations and examinations • If a biopsy taken, results are available within 24 to 48 hours What to expect at the One-Stop Clinic? The initial appointment lasts about an hour to allow a thorough breast evaluation. This includes seeing a specialist Consultant Onco Plastic Breast Surgeon who will take a detailed history about your concerns as well as your past medical history and will then examine you. A breast care nurse will be present during all examinations. Following this, you will then undergo a breast ultrasound and, if you are over 35, a mammogram as well. If during your clinical examination or breast imaging, an abnormality is noted, your Consultant may recommend obtaining a biopsy. This is frequently in the form of a specialized needle to sample a very small piece of breast tissue. Local anaesthetic is used to make the area numb before the biopsy is taken. A small cut is then made in the breast and the biopsy needle inserted to take samples. The tissue is sent away for examination and takes 1 or 2 days for the result to be available. Once you have undergone your imaging (and biopsy if required), you will then again meet with the Consultant, who will explain the findings to you. You will also have an opportunity to ask further questions. If needed, a follow up appointment will be arranged. 66 JUNE 2019
What if I need treatment for breast cancer? Fortunately, 9 out of 10 women who come for a breast check can be reassured immediately. For those diagnosed with breast disease, our team of Consultant Breast Specialists work within a Multidisciplinary Team to create a tailor made treatment plan for you. Treatment then commences within days. Importantly we ensure you will always have access to your Consultant during your entire period of care and beyond.

What if I have been diagnosed in the NHS and want to be treated privately? This is very easily arranged as we can electronically import all your records and images across from the NHS (with your permission) and commence treatment immediately. All our Consultants are recognised by the major insurance providers. For patients who are not insured and wish to have part or all of their treatment privately, we have a range of affordable fixed price self pay packages. Breast Screening: In the UK, all women aged between 50 and 70 are invited to attend breast screening every three years. However, for women aged under 50 who are in a higher risk group or have a family history of breast cancer, earlier breast screening at the Thames Breast Clinic can help provide reassurance. We can also provide genetic testing if necessary. Genetic testing should not be undertaken lightly and we work with counsellors to provide support as you make this important decision. Where appropriate, we will advise you on what risk-reducing measures you should consider. If you have any concerns about your breasts or would simply like a check up for peace of mind, please call us. Our team would be happy to arrange a consultation at a clinic near you.

Both knees replaced at the same time with two surgeons! M r Henry Bourke and Mr Rakesh Kucheria, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons at Spire Thames Valley Hospital in Wexham, together offer a procedure, known as the bilateral simultaneous knee replacement, where they perform surgery on a patient’s knees, at the same time, one on each knee. Mr Bourke explains: “Double knee replacements are usually done on different days and months apart. So, the patient must go through major surgery and recovery twice. Alternatively, the replacements are performed one after the other, in a long operation. By operating at the same time for 60 to 90 minutes, Mr Kucheria and I can replace both knees in one go which means the patient takes less time to recover.” He adds: “We are a left-hand and right-hand combination of surgeons which means we don’t tend to get in each other’s way.” The most common reason for a double knee replacement is severe arthritis that is causing pain and stiffness in both knees. This typically interferes with activities of daily living and significantly reduces the sufferer’s quality of life. Bernie Irwin, age 66, was one of the first patients to have a bilateral simultaneous knee replacement at Spire Thames Valley Hospital. Both Bernie’s knees had started to deteriorate five years ago and over time, were starting to get worse. Bernie explains: “I was in constant pain whether I was lying in bed or getting in and out of the bath. Walking and working was so restrictive. My passion

is golf and I was not able to play very often. I realised I had to do something drastic.” He continues: “Having both knees done at the same time was so scary but so worthwhile, as the recovery time is the same as having one knee replaced. Mr Bourke was amazing. He explained everything to me beforehand and the care I received from Mr Bourke both before and after surgery has been superb. Having both knees replaced has made such a difference to my life. I am back to normal activities, I am pain free and after three months I am back playing nine holes of golf.” The recovery period for a bilateral knee replacement is between six to twelve weeks. Most of the time is spent at home, although in the latter few weeks, patients can get out of the house and do a little a bit of gentle walking. Unfortunately, patients cannot drive a car in the first six weeks and are not allowed to fly in this period due to the increased risk of deep vein thrombosis. However, most patients are mobile by six weeks, walking independently or just with a single stick. A return to gentle sporting activities such as golf usually is possible by three months. Mr Bourke concludes, “Mr Kucheria and I are delighted that Bernie has managed to make such a great recovery in a relatively short period of time and that he could get back to playing golf so quickly.” If you would like to book an appointment to discuss your knee concerns, call 01753 467 616 or email enquiries@spirethamesvalley.com.

VP Construction Engagements If you are contemplating modernising, re-modelling or extending your home, VP Construction Engagements should definitely be on your radar
B
efore you embark on your project you should bear in mind that you will need more than a builder. Even the smallest of projects can require local authority planning consent and all projects must be carried out to building regulations standards. All of those requirements need careful organisation, an architect may be required, a structural engineer and even a quantity surveyor to ensure that the appropriate budgeting has been provided for and all before the first brick is laid or a length of timber is sawn to size. Like so many other industries, the construction industry is highly specialised and technical. Most homeowners are simply out of their depth when faced with all of these issues and decisions, fear not, help is at hand. VP Construction Engagements ensures that homeowners have a practical and workable alternative to having to deal with so many different aspects of their project and the coordination of so many trades’, materials and making significant technical decisions. At VP there is so much more on offer. VP do not just take care of your project, they take care of you during the course of your project. If you require assistance with internal decorating, interior design, landscaping or any other aspect of your project, VP are on hand to assist you. Most importantly, VP ensure that the homeowner remains in the driving seat and firmly in control of their project with VP acting as a “one stop shop” with regular project meetings, clear communications and the provision of frequent updates on project progress and quality control management. At VP it is fully understood that some homeowners will also have the desire to become totally involved with every aspect of the project whilst others simply want to stand back and focus on other aspects of their life and simply be handed the keys at the end of the process. At VP customer choice always comes first. So, whichever

category you fall into, VP will take care of you. VP provide total flexibility to their clients. Services are available individually, or as a complete package. VP can work with existing drawings and planning consents or take care of the whole pre-construction process. Frequently, VP are contacted by homeowners who have made planning applications which have been refused. With careful consideration and a fresh approach, VP regularly obtain planning consent and have massive experience of dealing with local planning authorities nationwide. VP are yet to encounter a project for which they could not achieve consent following a project review, revisions and a fresh application. Not only is all of VP’s work fully insured during the course of your project, the work itself is underpinned with an insurance backed warranty provided by the most respected national construction organisation . VP can also help you to arrange for buildings insurance during the course of the works and has preferential arrangements with one of the most prestigious insurance providers in the UK. Very few contractors can offer that. If you are contemplating refurbishing, modernising or enlarging your home, why not take advantage of VP’s FREE, and no obligation preproject assessment? VP will come to your property by appointment, and discuss your proposed project with you in the comfort of your own home at your convenience. Why not search VP Construction Engagements and read the posts showing recent activity or call 0808 1000 882 to speak to one of the team.
I can’t thank the team at “VP” enough for their professional approach to achieving our planning consent, it was an extremely complex application and not once did we doubt that we wouldn’t get it approved such was our confidence in them. The expertise involved and commitment to hit the ever moving deadlines imposed by the local authority was outstanding, meaning we could get on with leading our lives as normal without any of the stress that would have been involved for us otherwise.

Outdoor Living Inspiration For Every Home
A
s the temperatures start to climb, the hottest venue in town is just a couple of feet away. So whether it’s a patio, courtyard or rolling paddock, it’s time to start cultivating your Eden. Ranging from lush urban terraces to stunning alfresco kitchens, we’ve rounded up the finest outdoor rooms to reveal how you can get the most out of your space this season.
Inner City Edens For apartment dwellers, that small balcony or rooftop courtyard is your very own inner-city escape. Make the most of it this year with smart foldable furniture and plenty of designer planters. For those short on space, Ligne Roset’s Backpack or Moroso’s Banjooli collections provide a colourful injection of life. A little lighting can also go a long way with Contardi’s Muse Outdoor Lantern as the ultimate day-to-night lighting solution.
Sun Seekers With the Met Office predicting a scorching summer ahead, give crowded parks a pass and recline in style with your very own sun lounger. For lovers of Danish design, we recommend taking a look at Carl Hansen & Son’s BK14 Sunbed that can be transformed into a stunning indoor bench for use during the cooler months. Meanwhile, Bauhaus buffs will delight in Gandia Blasco’s new Timeless Chaise Lounge, a distinctive lounger inspired by the architectural language of one of the 20th century’s most influential design movements.
Alfresco Dining For many people, there’s nothing more romantic than a meal in the open air. Our outdoor dining collections are here to help you rediscover that pleasure with an array of practical yet stylish solutions. From booster grills that heat up fully in just six minutes to stunning indoor/outdoor design, alfresco living shouldn’t be just for summer. We recommend kicking things off with a classic teak dining set from Gandia or Gloster before creating your own personalised kitchen with Röshults. All smooth lines and Scandinavian rhythms, they bring barbecues into the 21st century with full grill 80 JUNE 2019
control and fuss-free cleaning. The only thing you need to worry about is the topping up the drinks.
Delightful Decking No matter where you are in your home, comfort should always be the first priority. In 2019, we’re taking a gentler approach and inviting poufs, sofas and rugs out onto the decking. Stunning natural fibres and weaves will have a welcome softening effect (see B&B Italia’s Ray Natural Collection) while complementary teak dining or lounge sets will emphasize the richness of wood. For those looking for something a little softer still, Paola Lenti’s collection of high-tech woven chairs are an ideal starting point.
Luminous Landscapes Lighting is one of the important aspects for an enchanting outdoor space, yet it’s often overlooked. This summer, search for lanterns, pendants and illuminated planters — all of which will help transition a summer garden party into a sophisticated evening soiree. Ones to watch include Pablo Lighting’s UMA Bluetooth Sound Lantern (8 hours of high fidelity sound paired with warm-dim light technology) and Foscarini’s new Twiggy Grid Outdoor Collection. At Chaplins, we believe in alfresco living all year long. All it takes is a little bit of design thinking. Visit us online or in-store this summer to discover Europe’s finest luxury brands all under one roof.
