Hawkstone Hall has the wow factor F rom the moment your turn the corner onto the long drive up to the Hall it instantly takes your breath away. The long driveway makes your view of the house just breath-taking, and part of me felt like I had gone back in time to one of my favourite movies Gone with the Wind or entered a Jane Austin novel. As soon as you park up you are instantly greeted by the concierge Aaron who collected our bags and whisked us into the grand and beautiful foyer, to which we are offered a cold glass of Bubbles and asked to take a relaxing seat in the summer room to check in. I can honesty say I have never had a more luxurious and relaxing check in at a hotel ever. Aaron then showed us to our room which was called Beatrix after the author Beatrix Potter. The room was stunning, its large spacious size, beautiful décor, amazing view of the grounds and a bathroom to die for. The small touches in the room do not go unnoticed, such as complimentary shortbread, Elemis products in the bathroom and classic music playing on the radio as soon as you walk in. Hawkstone hall is dripping in magnificent original artwork and history. Although the hall has that element of originality from years ago it also has a touch of “now” to it, so the new owners may have updated – but it hasn’t lost its historic feeling. Every room you walk into has the wow factor and I really did fall in love with the Library room which had famous book quotes on the wall and a really relaxed vibe. A completely perfect place to enjoy a cold gin on a summer afternoon. The grounds around the hall are incredible, with beautiful water features, flowers, stone artwork

and a feeling you could get lost in this huge secret garden. We were lucky enough to experience dining that evening in the restaurant, and the menu was mouth watering – with so much choice it was hard what to decide to go for. With the help of our waiter and a fantastic selection of red wine, I decided on goats cheese to start, fillet steak and lobster for main and a chocolate dessert, My husband went for a pate to start, lamb main course and a cheese board to finish. Every mouthful was just to die for, full of flavour and if you has said the restaurant had Michelin stars I would have believed it. The service is second to none, nothing is too much trouble and I felt like we were living like millionaires for the weekend. After our meal we retired to the Library were we enjoyed some beautiful local rhubarb gin and relaxed till the early hours. The morning was again 5 stars all the way – at breakfast we had beautiful brewed coffee and freshly squeezed orange juice. Plus there was a wide array of pastries, fresh fruit and cold meats and cheese or a full English breakfast to choose from, as well as the trendy avocado and poached eggs. Relaxed is a perfect word because when I left Hawkstone Hall that’s exactly how I felt. Relaxed, refreshed and like I had been spoilt all weekend with great atmosphere, stunning location and views, beautiful food and so much more. Hawkstone Hall is a must visit and is 5 stars all the way. If you’re looking for a weekend away, a venue to get married, a romantic meal or afternoon tea it really has it all. Their vision of a truly destination venue has been delivered, with stunning cocktails, a range of amazing champagne and delicious food served in social sharing style. Hearing that they have quite a bit planned over the coming months, we thought we’d look to see what they have in store for us in August…and we were not disappointed!

Game Supper Club – 14th August Seasonal British sourcing is a key ethos of the team at Copper House, and game in particular, is one of autumn’s delights for Copper House. Their first Game Supper Club is on 14th August, focused on Grouse, with September’s Club just announced as 11th. 20 august 2019

Get Shucked Oyster Festival Oysters are a passion at Copper House where in their first twelve weeks from opening, they shucked more than 2000 oysters. During their ‘Get Shucked’ Oyster Festival, alongside their house offering, they have created a number of special oyster dishes, each paired with a chosen drink each week. There will be classic serves such as Raw Maldon Rocks oysters resting on a bed of ice served with red wine shallot or wasabi dressing, but also cooked dishes such as ‘Rockefeller Oysters’ which are topped with Tabasco, herbs and bread crumbs then grilled, oysters pickled in cider vinegar and dill and the truly moreish ‘Kaki Furai’ oysters which are coated in fine Panko breadcrumbs and deep-fried served with seaweed tartare – just divine!

attlers Green Veterinary Centre opened its doors on the 15th July 2019. They are extremely excited to be a part of the warm and welcoming Radlett community and a part of the Battlers Green Farm Rural shopping village. It’s fair to say the landscape of veterinary care is changing and changing rapidly. Large corporates have and continue to buy-up veterinary practices all over the UK. This can mean the loss of that personalised warm touch you expect at your vets. The Head Vet and Owner, Dr Jonathan Rubin originally came over from South Africa having qualified from the prestigious and world renowned Onderstepoort - Faculty of Veterinary Science, He has lived and worked in the UK for the last 16 years and in his time in the UK he has worked for large veterinary groups, large charity clinics like the PDSA and RSPCA, on a locum basis, for smaller vet surgeries and also as an out-of-hours emergency on-call vet . He lives in North London, with his wife and 2 young kids as well as rescue cat Marvin and rescue dog Billy. Battlers Green Veterinary Centre are proudly independent and corporate free. The aim is to provide affordable first-class care to both the animals and their owners in the brand-new, purpose built, state of the art veterinary centre. Dr Rubin wanted the premises to be spacious and modern but still welcoming and most importantly well planned for patient and owner comfort, safety and care. Regent Seven Seas Cruises Reveals 65 Unique Excursions Exclusive to Seven Seas Splendor

Mediterranean and Northern Europe shore excursions curated with local tour operators debuting exclusively for guests sailing on the inaugural 2020 season of Seven Seas Splendor™.

Soar in a helicopter over the gorgeous countryside outside Monaco en route to an unforgettable meal at La Bastide de Moustiers, created by the famed French chef Alain Ducasse, or stay grounded on an electricbike tour of La Cadiere d’Azur, savoring the bouquets of the many vintages found throughout the vineyards around Toulon, France. Tour the stunning beauty around Sorrento, Italy, and admire Caravaggio’s masterpiece, The Seven Works of Mercy, on display at Pious Mount of Mercy Church in Naples, or learn under the tutelage of a master chef in Greenock, Scotland to discover there is much more than just haggis to Scottish cuisine

Regent Seven Seas Cruises offers an unrivalled experience to luxury travellers. Sample one of the many excursions on offer including some of our favourites below.

ACOUSTIC FLAMENCO AND THE MINES (Spain)

MUSSEL TASTING TOUR BY SPEED BOAT (Montenegro)

Enjoy a unique tour of a former mine that culminates with an underground flamenco performance of songs that salute the mining industry. The Carthaginians and Romans first mined the area around the village of Parque Minero more than 2,000 years ago. Mining reached its peak in the 19th century, as guests will discover while walking through the vast complex of caves in the Agrupa Vicenta mine. The acoustics below the surface are excellent for flamenco, the soulful instrumental guitar music synonymous with southern Spain.

Cruise through beautiful Boka Bay in Montenegro to the islet Our Lady of the Rocks and then sample freshwater mussels at a farm that grows and harvests them. The leisurely boat ride will be extraordinarily scenic, especially approaching Our Lady of the Rocks, a small, manmade islet created to commemorate the sailors from the town of Perast, which lies directly across the bay. Boka Bay is also known for producing some of Montenegro’s finest mussels, and guests will enjoy an insider’s look at the process at a commercial mussel farm.

ELECTRIC-BIKE IN THE VINEYARDS FROM LA CADIERE D’AZUR (France) Ride an electric bike from the enchanting village of La Cadiere d’Azur in France through the vineyards of the Bandol region to sample a selection of characteristic wines and be served fougasse, a crusty Provençal flat bread whose origins date to Roman times. The electronic bike allows guests to ride farther and negotiate hills with considerably less effort than a traditional bike. ($199 per guest)

o celebrate the arrival of the much anticipated Dior exhibition to London, this season’s Prêt-à-Portea at The Berkeley sees the iconic designs of the House of Dior take to the cake stand for an unprecedented solo show inspired by “Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams” at the V&A museum. Working exclusively with Dior, this fashionista favourite adds an innovative twist to the traditional afternoon tea, and sees legendary Dior designs translated into creatively crafted cakes and patisserie. Headlining this season’s Couture Prêt-à-Portea is the Bar Suit, synonymous with Dior since it first took to the catwalk in 1947 as part of Christian Dior’s debut collection. Celebrated as the New Look, it becomes a rich chocolate biscuit embellished with cream royal icing. The collection also includes a red velvet cake inspired by the Lady Dior Handbag which shot to fame in 1995 when France’s first lady, Bernadette Chirac gifted it to Princess Diana, to a bottle of Miss Dior Eau de Parfum inspired by the designer’s own sister, Catherine, reimagined as a lychee and raspberry cake glazed with shimmering pink icing, complete with signature oversized silver bow. And finally, an edible homage in celebration of the imminent return of sling back season, Dior’s J’Adior shoe from the current collection by Maria Grazia Chiuri strides on to the cake stand as a vanilla biscuit with royal icing finished with its inscription bow in edible sugar ribbon. The Berkeley’s Pastry Chef Mourad Khiat comments “It was important for me to respectfully emulate Monsieur Dior’s timeless and iconic fairytale gowns using ingredients that best celebrate these opulent and beautiful creations. 50 YEARS OF TRAMP

London’s most iconic private members club, TRAMP is celebrating 50 years at the pinnacle of the nightlife industry

O

pened in December 1969, the Jermyn Street club has welcomed a who’s who of A-list celebrities through its unassuming doors and into the 300-capacity basement of bacchanalia, below. Original members included Sir Mick Jagger, Sir Roger Moore, Sir Michael Caine and sisters Joan and Jackie Collins, but the club quickly became a magnet for movie stars, musicians and even royalty,

and before long, Tramp became a byword for sophisticated debauchery. During the 1970s it wasn’t uncommon to see George Best on the dance floor while Sir Matt Busby frantically called the club’s front desk, trying to locate his absent star player; Marlon Brando holding court in the restaurant over a glass of scotch and Amaretto; and Frank Sinatra relaxing on his favourite seat in the lounge area, where guests would fall over themselves at the sight of Ol’ Blue Eyes as they emerged from the adjacent women’s toilets. Sir Rod Stewart once said of the club: “I remember coming out of Tramp when I used to play Sunday morning football and I’d get home at about four or five in the morning and I’d get up about three hours later for an 11 o’clock kick off smelling of booze!” The club’s original decor has been lovingly preserved, with beautiful, 17th Century oak panelling throughout and chandeliers from the Rothschild Palace hanging from the ceilings - save for one, memorable absence, where legendary The Who drummer, Keith Moon leapt from his table and brought the chandelier crashing to the floor before being escorted from the club screaming: “You can’t ban me from Tramp! Where else will I go?” He was welcomed back 24 hours later, after 42 august 2019

apologising profusely and paying for the damage. But while celebrity anecdotes undoubtedly helped to build interest in this mysteriously secretive club on the border of St. James’s and Mayfair, it has flourished through five decades thanks to its core principles: To offer luxurious service and fine dining in a relaxed and sociable environment; and to treat every member as a VIP. General Manager, David Fleming, says: “Tramp is more than just a members club. It is an intimate space with a limited membership and we pride ourselves on being able to welcome each and every guest by name, remember their favourite drink and where they like to sit in the restaurant or bar. “The club was built on quiet word-of-mouth, with our details being passed on by members on film sets, in business meetings and between bands, and over the years it has almost become a ‘password’ around the world; members frequently tell me how they’ve been to a far flung place and been given the best table in a restaurant because the owner is also a member of Tramp. “We talk about our membership as a family and in many cases, they really are - we have original members whose children and even grandchildren have grown up and joined the club and three generations can use it together. “If these walls could talk, they’d have a lot of stories to tell; but of course, they wouldn’t say a thing - because that’s the Tramp way.” The club launched its 50th anniversary celebrations with a star-studded party in May, attended by Sir Rod Stewart, Sir Michael Caine, Dame Joan Collins, Bill Wyman, Nathalie Dormer, Mark Ronson and many more, and members will enjoy further special events throughout the rest of the year. Prospective members may apply via the club’s website at www.tramp.co.uk/memberships. But remember: What happens in Tramp, stays in Tramp.

Aston Martin recreates iconic James Bond Goldfinger DB5

T

he iconic Aston Martin DB5 is back, thanks to a unique collaboration between Aston Martin and EON Productions, the company that produces the James Bond

films. Following the successful DB4 G.T. continuation project, a series of 25 Goldfinger DB5 continuation editions* have been recreated for customers by Aston Martin Works and EON Productions. The Goldfinger DB5 continuation is based on James Bond’s legendary car from 1964 and built by Aston Martin Works at Newport Pagnell – the original home of the DB5. They are authentic reproductions of the DB5 seen on screen, with some sympathetic modifications to ensure the highest levels of build quality and reliability. This authenticity extends to include functioning gadgets such as revolving number plates and more, which were made famous in Goldfinger. The gadgets are co-developed with Oscar®-winner Chris Corbould, special effects supervisor from the James Bond films. Officially sanctioned by Aston Martin and EON Productions, all the Goldfinger edition cars are produced to one specification - Silver Birch paint - just like the original. The most instantly recognisable car of all-time, the DB5 made its first appearance in the third James Bond movie, Goldfinger, alongside Sean Connery as James Bond. Laden with gadgets and armaments installed by Q Branch, the secret agent’s Aston Martin became an instant hit with moviegoers. Since its seminal appearance in Goldfinger the DB5 has featured in a further six James Bond movies: Thunderball (1965), again with Connery; GoldenEye (1995) and Tomorrow Never Dies (1997)

with Pierce Brosnan and three appearances alongside Daniel Craig in Casino Royale (2006), Skyfall (2012) and Spectre (2015). James Bond and his DB5 have become two icons of popular culture and one of the most successful and enduring movie partnerships of all-time. Such was its popularity, the DB5’s movie debut even spawned a Corgi die-cast model, an astonishing 2.5m of which were sold in its first year of production (1965). No wonder an entire generation of children grew-up aspiring to own an Aston Martin. Now, thanks to the remarkable Goldfinger

DB5 continuation project, a fortunate 25 of them can now own a faithful and authentic tribute to that original car. A further three cars will be built – one each for EON and Aston Martin, plus another to be auctioned for charity. Andy Palmer, Aston Martin Lagonda President & Group CEO, said: “The connection between Aston Martin and James Bond is something of which we are very proud and it is remarkable that the DB5 remains the definitive James Bond car after so many years. To own an Aston Martin has long been an aspiration for James Bond fans, but to own a Silver Birch DB5, complete with gadgets and built to the highest standards in the very same factory as the original James Bond cars? Well, that is surely the ultimate collectors’ fantasy. The skilled craftspeople at Aston Martin Works and the expert special effects team from the James Bond films are about to make this fantasy real for 25 very lucky customers.” Each Goldfinger DB5 continuation car is priced at £2.75m plus taxes. First deliveries to customers will commence in 2020. *Please note, this car is not road legal.

Aston Martin DB5 1963-1965 The DB5, unveiled at the Earls Court motor show in October 1963, was a development of the DB4 but with many updates and improvements. The most significant change for the new model would be the introduction of a 3995cc straight six complete with three SU carburetors it offered an additional 42bhp over the outgoing DB4. www.astonmartin.com

Bake Off to Take Off;

L&D Helipad Appeal Launches Cake-sale Pack F

oodie fundraisers are encouraged to hold a cake sale during the summer of 2019 to help raise the final £1.5m for an on-site helipad at Luton and Dunstable Hospital. A special L&D recipe book, bunting, invitations and more are available online. The new helipad will provide much-needed direct Air Ambulance access to the hospital which will increase the survival and recovery rates of heart attack, stroke and trauma patients and provide the ONLY 24/7 landing facility directly serving Herts, Beds and Bucks.• The ‘Bake Off to Take Off ’ pack – the idea for which was inspired by the hospital celebrating its 80th birthday in this year - includes posters, invitations, a bunting template and a selection of favourite baking recipes chosen by some of the hospital’s teams. The pack will be available for download throughout the summer. Sarah Amexheta, Head of Charity, said: ‘2019 is a milestone year for the L&D, and Preparing to Land is the charity’s flagship appeal for the 80th birthday celebrations. Among multiple other fundraising ideas, cake sales seemed like a natural fit. “We have had a lot of fun with bake-offs between hospital staff in the past, but thought it

50 august 2019

was about time to stop eating all the cake ourselves and start spreading the love. Hopefully the pack will provide inspiration enough for events large and small. We look forward to seeing the results.” The Appeal aims to generate £1.5m, the final sum required to secure the project to build a helipad within the hospital complex. With no helipad currently at the hospital itself, Air Ambulances land on a local school playing field and transfer patients the final distance by road, significantly eating into the 60 critical minutes after an incident. If it is deemed too risky to undertake the final road transfer, casualties can potentially be transferred to the nearest emergency helipads, in Northamptonshire, Cambridge or London. The closest of these is over 25 miles away. The majority of the helipad funding – over £4m - is already in place. The charity would also like to hear from individuals and businesses who could support the appeal through sponsorship opportunities and donor partnerships. It is hoped that the helipad will be operational by 2021. Downloadable pack via www.ldh.nhs.uk/ charity/supporting-wards-and-departments/ helipad-appeal/bake-off-to-take-off

Exciting announcement for St Margaret’s School, Bushey

S

t Margaret’s School will begin its transition in January 2020 from a single sex, all girls school, to educating both girls and boys, in a move that seeks to embrace the modern educational world. Beginning in January 2020 with Reception, Years 1, 2 and Sixth Form, and the opening of a new Pre-Reception year, the school will emerge as fully co-educational across all year groups by 2022. The decision resonates strongly with the schools traditional roots and chimes with more contemporary views about the benefits of educating both genders together. St Margaret’s was originally established as a coeducational environment back in 1749 celebrating the education of both boys and girls together as equals before it evolved into single sex education in 1812. Drawing upon its varied history, this vision remains ever more relevant today as the school continues to prepare children to confidently take on the challenges of life together as young men and women in the modern world. Headmistress, Rose Hardy explained “The world is co-educational and mixing boys and girls together

in the classroom simply reflects the reality and the diversity of our society today. St Margaret’s has always encouraged a spirit of diversity at its core and now is the ideal time to integrate both genders into the fold so it’s a natural progression.” Alongside the modernisation of its curriculum, over the next two years the school will be investing heavily in its academic, co-curricular and boarding facilities, not to mention providing a rich programme of extra-curricular activities. Accepting your body,

accepting

yourself I

f you have a big nose or a small nose, long arms or short arms, freckles or no freckles, it’s what you’ve got and these things invariably cannot be altered. Often, there are situations and circumstances that cannot be changed, but how you react to those situations and circumstances might be within your control. Does poor emotional health come from poor body image or does poor body image come from poor psychological health? I would suggest both, or either. I am relatively satisfied with my body; yes, I’d probably like to have a slightly different this or altered that, but I’m acceptant that I’ve got what I’ve got. After all I’m stuck with what I’ve got and along with the concept of acceptance of my authentic reality psychologically, I have also accepted that the deal I’ve been dealt regarding my physical self is probably not exactly what I would have chosen, but I’ve accepted the accurate authenticity of what my body is and it’s OK - and OK is good enough for me.

What is a healthy body image? Being bald affects many people. I’m bald and it really does not bother me - I own my baldness and whilst being acutely aware of how I may be accused of distortion, there are distinct benefits to

64 august 2019

being bald. I never have a bad hair day and I save a fortune by not buying shampoo and not going to the hairdressers. I have said in the past, “I have no control over my hairline, but I do have some control over my waistline.” I’m keen to stay in reasonable shape for health reasons and yes, to a degree, I do care what I look like, but my body does not define me. Many people can cram their heads full of selfdeprecating clutter, for instance: I’m not clever enough, I’m not rich enough, I’m not quick enough, I’m not strong enough, my body doesn’t look right… Improving one’s self is, for many people, an innate part of the enhancing drive; the actualising tendency, which is peculiar to human beings. Wanting more educationally, materially or socially or sporting wise is not to be ignored, but I believe that within the realms of realism we should try to accept ourselves as good enough and not worry what others think. Measuring yourself against others is not always healthy; comparisons are dangerous and the stealer of joy. I’m a firm believer that most ‘other’ people don’t have much time or the inclination to spend worrying about what most other people look like. Physical appearance is subjective and as they say, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” Many of my clients come to accept that there is no such thing as perfection and that recognising and acknowledging the accurate genuineness of any situation allows them to sit harmoniously and at ease. They tend to feel more at one, more self aware and grounded with themselves. They are more or less contented being who they truly are, not what they think, or others think, they should or must be.

When should I consider cataract surgery? C

ataract surgery is one of the most common procedures in the UK with over 300,000 carried out each year¹. It is a highly successful yet complex operation that requires a skilled surgical team that has plenty of time, pays attention to detail, and carefully plans your journey. Consultant Ophthalmologist from BMI The Clementine Churchill Hospital, Mr Nicholas Lee shares his advice when considering the option to have cataract surgery. What are cataracts? Cataracts occur when the lens of your eye becomes less transparent and makes the vision cloudy. Cataracts develop as the eyes age, affecting sight, and the only way to completely reverse the formation of cataracts is to have cataract surgery. It is however very important to exclude other conditions that can affect your vision, like macular degeneration or epiretinal membranes. Thus Mr Lee always recommends to dilate the pupil, and have an examination of the back of the eye with an OCT scan (similar to a MRI scan that looks into the layers of the eye, detecting other conditions that may be affecting your sight). This helps to identify that the

66 august 2019

reason for reduced vision is a cataract. When to get cataract surgery? This is a very individual choice between you and your surgeon. Cataracts affect people in different ways; some people manage perfectly well with what looks a bad cataract, and others are affected by the smallest of cataracts. There is no urgency, a cataract is not harmful, it can wait until you are ready². The old adage of waiting until the cataract is “ripe” has long gone. When the cataract is affecting your quality of life significantly then is the time to have surgery. ³ If you don’t need or want surgery immediately, there are other steps you can take to improve your vision in the short term, for example a change of glasses can sometimes help. If you’re worried that you might be starting to suffer from cataracts, or if you simply want to have your eyes examined by a professional, contact us to arrange an appointment with a BMI ophthalmologist. Splash out on a

garden pond F

You can dig a miniature pond in just an afternoon. It may hold only a few gallons of water, but will still make a pretty feature. A slightly larger one - 1m x 2m - gives more scope, but a 2m x 4m pool has massive potential for plants, wildlife and beauty 74 august 2019

or small ponds, rigid liners are a good option. You’ll want the mould to be virtually invisible beneath the water so choose a dark green or black model. Tiny moulds can cost as little as £20, but expect to pay £600 for a 2.6m x 1.8m x 0.6m pond. Prices vary, so visit an aquatic centre or look online before buying. Flexible liners - PVC or layered polythene - are an alternative, especially if you want to create an unusual shape. They must be laid in a faultlessly prepared hole that has been interlined with old carpet or pond underlay. If you know what you’re doing, pond building is fairly easy. Otherwise, call the professionals. Remember that the pond sides must be level so that the water comes right to the top, leaving no unsightly liner on display. Site your pond in sun or partial shade away from trees, and have paving, turf or soil running right Picture: up to the edges for an attractive margin. The pond should be at least 0.5m deep for aquatic plants, but needs to be shallow at

the edges for marginal species.Use planting baskets filled with aquatic compost or soil topped with gravel. Wildlife needs to have access, so install a ramp of some kind or build up part of the marginal shelf with bricks or stones. Planting is the best bit. You’ll need floating leaves for summer shade so include water lilies and aim for 60 per cent surface cover. For tiny ponds, choose Pygmaea range or other non-vigorous types Oxygenating plants are essential, so include native starwort, curled pondweed or water crowfoot. These help to keep water clear and give homes to invertebrates. Beautiful marginals include Japanese water irises, Bowles golden sedge, kingcups, water forget-me-nots and cotton grass. Choose carefully and match plants to the pond’s size. Thugs such as great spearwort, pickerel weed and yellow flag are suitable only for big ponds. If you want fish, fine. But for more diverse fauna, limit your choice to sticklebacks. That will give tadpoles, dragonflies, newts and other creatures a chance.

C

hoosing the right tiles for your bathroom needs some careful consideration. With so many varieties on the market, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by the choice on offer. Choose from ceramic, slate, glass and metal tiles, plain or patterned, large and small, smooth or textured. The options are seemingly endless. So, to help you through the decision process, we’ve put together some practical tips, making finding the perfect tiles for you bathroom, a breeze

CERAMIC OR NATURAL STONE TILES? Ceramic tiles are the most popular by a long way. They’re durable, their glazed surface makes them highly resistant to harbouring germs, they’re usually very easy to keep clean, and come in styles to suit every taste. If you opt for ceramics, the most important thing to be aware of is that they do tend to vary from lot to lot, so make sure all the boxes you buy are stamped with the same lot number. But if you’d rather try something different... Glazed terracotta tiles are hugely popular right now with the trend for Mediterranean style bathrooms. Good quality terracotta is not only gorgeously rustic, it’ll last virtually forever, but can be hard to find. So the cheapest option might not be the best. Natural stone tiles like granite, slate, marble and even terrazzo (composed of marble chips imbedded in concrete and polished smooth) are beautiful, distinctive, and luxurious. They’ll cost you though. And these materials tend to be porous, so you may need to apply a seal to stop the tiles absorbing water. Make sure you discuss this with the supplier before you buy. Glass, metal, and porcelain tiles look brilliant if installed properly – but that’s easier said than done. Unless you’re really a dab hand at DIY you might want to leave the fitting of these to the experts.

ADD TEXTURE AND INTEREST WITH BATHROOM TILES With the majority of bathroom suites being sleek and white, tiles are a great way to add texture and

interest into a room that can otherwise, look fairly clinical. If you’re talking floor tiles, texture is a must. It sounds like common sense, but many buyers are still seduced by lovely shiny tiles and then end up skidding all over the place every time the floor’s wet. Generally, the rougher the texture, the less slippery the tile when wet. When it comes to wall tiles, shiny tiles look chic and sleek and reflect light, making them a good option when in small or dark spaces. On the other hand, embossed tiles can be a smart way of adding interest to your walls and reducing starkness, especially if your tiles are in only one or two colours.

CONSIDER COLOURFUL OR PATTERNED BATHROOM TILES It goes without saying that white is by far the most popular colour choice for bathroom tiles. White tiles are fresh-looking, classic, and reflect light to give the illusion of a more spacious, lighter room. If you’re worried about the room looking too stark add dark or patterned towels and other accessories to introduce splashes of colour while retaining the clean minimalist look. Colourful or patterned tiles can be used to add detail here and there, or make a bold statement when used to cover the entire wall. They tend to look best contrasted with simpler bathroom fixtures.

SMALLER BATHROOMS LOOK BETTER WITH SMALLER TILES Generally, the more compact the bathroom the smaller the tiles should be, especially if there’s not much space between your sink, toilet, and tub. Smaller tiles will also require less cutting to fit around objects and make for a more flowing feel. If you’re lucky enough to have a big bathroom, large tiles give a sleek look with less exposed grouting in between. Borders or panels of smaller tiles can look fantastic in complimentary or contrasting colours.

Toby, tell us a little about Tobias Oliver Interiors Showroom Our luxury lifestyle showroom will showcase the latest trends from world-class leading brands in furniture, lighting and accessories. We have designed the showroom to demonstrate the high level of interior design services we provide – from the interior architectural elements, to bespoke cabinetry to the final accessories and soft-furnishing details. In addition, the showroom features an array of lighting choices; something often missing from the high street. The goal is to demonstrate to our clients all the options that are available to them. With the limitless possibilities available – we are able to provide clients their ultimate design aspirations. And the services that you provide? We provide full interior design services from concept to completion. We work on a handful of high-end projects at a time – this allows us to focus on attention to detail and customer service. We specialise in bespoke furniture; whether it be a fitted luxury study or kitchen to a unique dining table or barstool – for example. Due to our longstanding and trusted relationships with our suppliers – we are able to provide the public with access to trade only lighting suppliers such as Porta Romana. We also provide a “quick-ship” service for a range of furniture and lighting where we able to provide a bespoke service with a week’s lead time. Would you say you have a typical clientele? There is an inherent impression that interior design centres are filled with exclusive interior design showrooms showcasing the latest designs from the finest furniture and décor companies - but only

catering to the rich and famous. However, there is an increasing trend of savvy middle-class clients who would rather invest in design by buying once and buying right. This can be a challenging and time-consuming process whereby it is becoming more widely apparent that using an interior designer can save on both time and cost. The brands you have chosen to represent, and why? We are fortunate enough to have been trusted to represent several luxury brands in our showroom who synergise with Tobias Oliver Interiors. L’OBJET accessories, The Baobab Collection of candles, Porta Romana lighting to name a few. Most furniture you will see in our interior design showroom is only a small sampling of what is truly available – but these help to demonstrate the level of quality to be expected for our Clients. In addition, we hold hundreds of sample finishes for all our products, allowing Clients the opportunity to design exactly what they are looking for. Another resource our Clients will enjoy is our diverse Design Library and access to trade only websites to showcase other products available from any brand. For example, you love the look and finish of a console table in our showroom but wish to use the same design for a dressing table? We can make it! Toby, tell us about the success of the business so far, and why did you make Berkhamsted your home? Seeking to achieve my goals and aspiring to new ones; is the way I lead my life. One of these goals, since my teens, was to open an interiors showroom. This goal has of course developed into the luxury lifestyle showroom – and now I have witnessed it’s the fruition. I always had an instinctive passion for interior design and attention to detail – and this is what I believe to be the key elements for the emerging success of the Tobias Oliver Interiors brand. I grew up in Berkhamsted – my family and friends all live in the area and so it was natural for me to come back to my roots. The added bonus of course was that I could bring my dreams of a luxury lifestyle showroom with me – and thereby making exceptional design accessible to our local community.

While most of us cannot afford the luxury of owning a roof terrace, while the sun is out in London, it is hard not to look up and dream about spending an afternoon basking on your own luxurious roof terrace

A roof with a view F

or full-scale entertaining or quietly admiring the sunset in the evening, there is no doubt that a good roof terrace can be the main attraction of a property. Rooftop gardens provide an oasis of calm from the hustle and bustle of London. They say that typical urban Georgian and Victorian streets have the potential for roof terraces, while modern apartment blocks need them to compensate for the lack of private gardens. They are the ultimate refuge from the stresses of city life and can raise the value of your property. You might be after an entertaining space with a comfortable seating or alfresco dining area and a hot tub, or plants, shrubs, and even a lawn! All of which can be enhanced by soft lighting.

“They are the ultimate refuge from the stresses of city life and can raise the value of your property” If you’re considering creating your own oasis above the eaves, however, there are vital considerations to take into account. If the space overlooks other properties or you want to build substantial walls, for example, then planning permission is likely to be required even if you are converting an existing flat roof. Whatever layout you choose, take account of the view. Whether you are looking out across the Thames or have an attractive view of the city, make the most of it in your design. Organise your area to maximise good views, maybe framing them with tall container plants or pencil junipers. Decking is a good choice for a roof terrace or balcony because it’s warm underfoot, easy to work 92 august 2019

with and lightweight for carrying up several flights. Choose western red cedar or hardwoods such as ipe or balau (from a sustainable source). They retain their colour, last much longer than softwood decks and look better too. If your roof terrace abuts a room with wooden flooring, use decking of a similar colour to help blur the boundaries between the two. Most roof terraces are covered in a waterproof membrane, while others have a fireproof layer, so be careful not to puncture them with fixtures and fittings. A rooftop terrace in the capital allows you to enjoy London from a completely different perspective.
