bbot’s Hill is a happy and thriving community in which pupils are encouraged to aim high, to grasp opportunities, enjoy learning and make lasting friendships. The school offers an all-round education for girls aged 4-16 years, and the Day Nursery & Pre-School caters for girls and boys from 6 months. Abbot’s Hill’s historic campus offers modern facilities in a magnificent country setting, situated in over 70 acres of beautiful parkland. St Columba’s College provides a seamless education, in an inspiring and challenging environment, for boys ages of four to 18 years. A Catholic school, St Columba’s is open to boys from a wide variety of religious traditions, with learning underpinned by the Columban code of Courage, Courtesy and Compassion. We all like to think we know how to teach our children good manners, but it looks like there’s an extra layer of rules for ‘posh’ babies – according to high-society bible Tatler’s toddler etiquette guide. The upper class publication has released a bizarre but tongue-in-cheek list of do’s and don’ts for how parents can raise their little darlings to be a highbrow child. So despite the fact they’re still in nappies, our little ones are already being judged on their manners. Ever since the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge announced their family’s set to expand once again, we’ve been itching to find out what the royal couple will name their new baby. Of course, we’ll likely have to wait until the tot arrives (their third baby’s due in April) to find out - but that doesn’t stop us pondering. Their first two - George, four, and two-year-old Charlotte - both have very classic names (no surprise, given their royal status!) and the new baby probably will too, but there are still numerous options.

Encouraging everyone to spend more time with nature in 2018, the show’s ‘24 hours outdoors’ initiative aims to inspire and raise awareness of the psychological, health and social benefits time outside offers. Supported by explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes and adventurer Anna McNuff, both recount stories about their latest journeys from the Discovery Theatre stage on 23 February. Commenting on the campaign, Sir Ranulph Fiennes said, “There’s never been a better time to take charge of your mental health, and one of the easiest ways to do this is to spend more time outdoors in the fresh air. No matter your age, everyone can add a little adventure to their life, but don’t feel you have to commit to long expeditions or wild escapades, a night spent in the garden can work just as well and is also a lot of fun!”

elwyn Garden City-based chauffeur company Herts Executive won two Bronze Awards at the UK’s only national awards for the private hire, taxi and chauffeur sector. Herts Executive won the Bronze award in the Chauffeur Operator (11-30 vehicles) category, and driver Bogdan Tepes also took Bronze in the Professional Driver of the Year category. Professional Driver Editor Mark Bursa said: “Herts Executive was founded more than 20 years ago by a businessman who frequently used chauffeur cars – and knew he wasn’t getting the right levels of service. So with a meticulous approach he has created a business with outstanding levels of driver retention and good, old-fashioned customer service.” Mark Bursa added: “At just 27 years old, Herts Executive driver Bogdan Tepes is one of our youngest-ever QSi winners, and his enthusiasm for the job shone out of his entry. He is unfailingly courteous, always on time and has an exceptional relationship with his customers. He is prepared to do jobs at any time and his company praises his traditional values of humility, respect and decency.” Professional Driver magazine’s QSi Awards ceremony was a night to remember for the cream of Britain’s chauffeur and private hire operators. The awards, open to every chauffeur and private hire company in the UK, are designed to recognise operators and individuals that demonstrate excellent standards of Quality, Service and Innovation. Gold, Silver and Bronze awards were presented in 10 categories at a thrilling event, held at the Effingham Park Hotel, near Gatwick Airport. 20 FEBRUARY 2018
The 10 categories mean there’s something for every size and type of operator, from one-man bands to large fleets. Categories also reward innovations in marketing, environmental performance and local community activities, while a special award – Professional Driver of the Year – singles out a chauffeur or private hire driver who is judged to be the best in the UK. Mark Bursa said: “The chauffeur and private hire industry has weathered the worst of the economy over the past few years, while making giant leaps forward in quality and professionalism. Our QSi Awards are designed to reward that excellence, and bring the industry together for a night in a celebration of all that’s good about this business.” Mark Bursa continued: “We were overwhelmed by the quality of the entries, and it was a very tough job to pick our winners. Only very good operators made the short list, so we can be sure our Gold, Silver and Bronze winners are among the very best operators in Britain.” Professional Driver magazine is the only national publication for the UK’s chauffeur and private hire industry. It is published monthly and is available free of charge to any licensed operator in the UK. For more details, visit www.prodrivermags.com. ABOUT HERTS EXECUTIVE Herts Executive Travel is a family run business that is dedicated to reliability and quality. Boasting a fleet of prestige vehicles driven by a longstanding team of thoroughly trained and vetted drivers, the company has become the largest executive car service company in Hertfordshire. Serving business and premium leisure travellers all over the home counties and London, the company has grown through building long standing relationships with its customers. As Bal Notay, the owner and director of Herts Executive comments, “Our customers know that when they book with us, there’ll be clean and comfortable car with a professional driver waiting for them at the agreed time. Getting these simple elements consistently right really is the entire focus of our business.” “In my old career in the corporate world, I traveled extensively. Hiring a driver in most of the major cities I visited was easy and the service would usual just work. Then I’d come back to London and all of a sudden doubt could enter into my travel plans. That’s what inspired me to set about building the kind of executive car hire service the UK was missing.” “We’ve come a long way since then. We now offer little extras like in-vehicle wifi, an umbrella for passengers… These little things make a difference but ultimately we know it’s our dedication to the reliability we offer that underpins our success.”

INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS GUIDE – The finest independent schools in the area –

Help your child solve their maths problems with
Mathnasium M
aths seems to induce more stress than any other subject, leading to anxiety which can have a huge impact on a child’s overall learning. This isn’t helped by today’s larger class sizes which mean that every child is expected to have the same abilities, and learn at the same pace. But in reality, students learn in different ways, and at different speeds. When looking to support their children’s learning - perhaps leading up to a school entry exam or the 11-plus - many parents opt for the traditional one-to-one tutor. However, experts agree that small group tuition, with children working alongside their peers, often works better than one-toone tutoring. And it won’t just be your child’s maths that shows an improvement; students also show measurable changes in attitude, confidence, and school progress.
Here’s why you should consider Mathnasium for your child: Equates maths with fun Ideally, children need an environment where they feel secure and where learning maths can be challenging but fun. At Mathnasium, children quickly make friends with others in their group and realise that they are not alone in needing a bit of extra help. They come to enjoy the sessions and look forward to attending each week. Targets only the areas your child struggles with At Mathnasium, students take a unique customised assessment which pinpoints their individual learning needs. Specially trained instructors then design a customised learning plan to close any gaps, which can be shared with your child’s school maths teacher for continuity. The instructors then work through the learning plan with each student in a way that makes sense to them. Fosters independent thinking and builds confidence With one-to-one tutoring, the tutor tends to do much of the work; explaining a concept to the child, giving an example, and then showing them how they’d work out the problem. But is better for learning, and less intimidating, to work in an environment where they can process new concepts without the pressure of constant one to one tutor involvement. Makes maths an interactive experience Children learn best by doing, not by listening. By turning a difficult mathematical problem into a
36 FEBRUARY 2018
challenge – and one in which rewards are earned for effort as much as results - children often grasp it better. Mathnasium’s expert instructors look at different ways of approaching the same problem to help develop independent thinking skills. Students are also taught how the rules work so that they fully understand, not just memorise, them. Embraces flexible learning With one-to-one tutors the work is generally done at set times and on predetermined subject matter. At Mathnasium, learning is more flexible. You can drop in, unscheduled, several times per week and work on a bespoke learning plan, so that children are learning more than they would in just a few hours of allocated school time. This can help them catch up if they are behind at school. Help for parents Mathnasium will also help with homework, taking away the frustration felt by parents having to think back to maths concepts that they perhaps haven’t revisited for 20 years or more. With the stress of changing to the new style maths GCSEs knocking the confidence of even able students, Mathnasium has extended the programme at their Radlett learning centre to include a new module for students at GCSE level. It also gives students a ’preview‘ of maths concepts to help prepare them for sixth-form, university, and beyond. The Radlett centre is situated at 289 Watling Street and offers maths tuition for children aged six to 16. For more information, visit: www.mathnasium.co.uk or call 01923 388641

oining Edge Grove at Year 7 offers a wonderful opportunity of two years of creative and specialist teaching in preparation for starting a senior school at 13+. We provide an exciting learning environment that equips pupils to successfully transfer to senior schools and also empowers them to thrive when they get there. We prepare our pupils for the variety of entrance tests required, from individual school entrance tests to the Common Entrance exams and Scholarships. Our small teaching groups mean that we focus on the individual child to ensure that they fulfil their potential in all areas - academically, on the sports field, musically and in the performing and creative arts. Lessons are taught by specialist subject teachers who know each child individually both in terms of their academic ability and pastorally, and their progress is carefully assessed and tracked throughout the two years. Year 7 and 8 is structured with ‘Academic Pathways’, offering carefully differentiated teaching
groups, depending on the child’s ability and choice of senior school. We also offer our own bespoke Edge Grove Baccalaureate Programme, teaching skills such as critical thinking and providing experience in leadership, teamwork, and independence. Pupils take on many responsibilities such as becoming prefects and house captains. They mature into well-rounded young people who are confident and socially aware. We have an excellent track record of success at securing places to leading senior schools at 13+, such as Harrow, St Albans Boys, NLCS, Mill Hill School, Merchant Taylors’ School, Haileybury, Habs Boys’ School and Habs Girls’ School. The Best Start
Busy parents find the Pre-Prep’s wraparound care options (7.45am-6.00pm and all included within termly fees) hugely helpful. Children can arrive for breakfast and stay for supper, taking the opportunity to enjoy a variety of activities in a relaxed, homely environment.

Scholarship Success L
ast year was quite remarkable for our Year 8 boys. Not only had they gelled to be a very effective group of prefects, but they also returned an incredible haul of scholarships, with some gaining places and offers of awards at multiple schools. What makes the success even sweeter is the memory of when they were in Year 6, where their academic potential was less obvious. They proved, beyond any doubt, that the journey we take our senior boys on is a rewarding and exciting one; where they blossom at the top of the school and leave us in the best possible shape, ready for the challenge of senior school.
“They have proved, beyond any doubt, that the journey we take our senior boys on is a rewarding and exciting on” Our Year 6 girls also made us very proud. They moved on to a range of schools, where their evident talents will continue to develop and skills we have nurtured here will give them all opportunities for success. We also saw our largest 11+ field and the route to Grammar School has become well-trodden by both Year 6 boys and girls. Again, we have the most children we have ever had passing the 11+, indicative perhaps of the economic climate, but also heartening for the way in which life here can prepare those children for the rigours of such a 42 FEBRUARY 2018

demanding test. If that was all these children had achieved we would reflect that this was a highly successful year, but life here is about so much more than academic success. Our senior sports teams have triumphed and excelled at times. Their football was sublime, their rugby combative and competitive and their cricket brutal. However, they also found time to produce some outstanding art work, to be part of some wonderful dramatic and musical performances and can truly be said to have shown themselves collectively to be an extraordinary group of talented all-rounders. Our girls did not pale by comparison in anything other than numeric supremacy. Their sport was competitive, their creativity inspiring and the way they conducted themselves exemplary. We would be delighted to show you around our School and everything that we have to offer. Please make an appointment to visit or attend one of our Open Mornings. Keith D Young, Headmaster

Why You Should Consider an All Through (3-18) School for Your Child The need to belong is fundamental to humans. When joining an all through school, you ‘buy’ into a community for fifteen years (and beyond!) You become a family and the sense of people knowing you and you knowing them is comforting. Research (R.B King 2015) concludes that a sense of ‘relatedness’ improves academic outcomes and more importantly well-being. ‘Relatedness’ is the feeling that one is special and important in one’s social circle. Being part of a school community from Kindergarten to Sixth Form increases that feeling of ‘relatedness’. Many studies support this theory. ‘Children with secure attachments to their caregivers exhibit better overall functioning’ (Bergin & Bergin 2009). In an all through school, there is time to develop the ‘care-giver’ bonds. As parents who know staff and staff who know children and children who know other parents and staff, a triangle of powerful care-giving is established. It is an exceptionally strong equation for supporting wellbeing and happy children are successful children. The ride may not always be smooth but relationships are established; children and their parents feel secure. Celebrating together, commiserating together, working and talking and being together.
Caring for each other. Studies in biopsychology support that there are ‘clear associations between biological correlates of relatedness and outcomes such as learning (Clark –Elford, R., Natahn P.J., Auyeung, B., Voon, V., Sule, A., Muller, U. et al (2014), motivation (Love, 2014) and well-being (Bartz, Zaki, Bolger, & Oscher, 2011). Belonging is important to all of us. On the occasions, when I have left one job for another, the grief at departure is tangible; this is because I have left my family. We all need to belong and an all through school gives you a ‘second’ family for fifteen years and beyond because there is always the Old Girls and Old Boys Societies! Plus, schools love to invite friends back for the next generation of children coming through. www.st-francis.herts.sch.uk

ST ALBANS INDEPENDENT COLLEGE OPEN MORNING Saturday 24th March 2018, 10.30am – 12.45pm
N
ow welcoming students for year 10, 11 & 12 entry. St Albans Independent College, founded in 1988 has established an excellent reputation for providing the highest quality of education. Class sizes are limited to no more than seven students so that everyone is assured of significant personal attention. This allows students to build confidence and achieve excellent grades. Our teachers are highly qualified and experienced and many are current examiners. There is a strong expectation that students work to the best of their abilities, yet the College promotes an otherwise informal and friendly atmosphere where students are on first name terms with teachers and there is no formal dress code. The high-achieving ethos at the College is fostered by our student mentoring system, which continuously monitors students’ progress across all of their subjects. Radlett Learning Centre is first in UK to offer learning support for new maths GCSE Maths tutoring centre aims to combat teen stress by boosting number confidence
R
adlett is the first town in the country to benefit from a new innovative maths programme to support the demand of the new Mathematics GCSE. Mathnasium has today announced they will be extending the tutoring programme at their Radlett learning centre to accommodate students at GCSE level from this month. This move follows teachers’ assessments that the first “big, fat” maths exams have knocked the confidence of even able students, with many thinking that they have “failed maths.” The recently introduced changes to the exam represent another blow to young people’s confidence, which a study by Your Life in 2017 claims can have a major impact on subsequent educational achievements. The recent poor resit rates from the new Maths GSCE reforms have also been exacerbated by a shortage of maths teachers, which means in some schools the more challenging curriculum is being taught by non-specialists. UK Director of Mathnasium Learning Centres, Steve Felmingham commented: “We often see many parents turn to private tutors to support significant milestones such as the 11-plus or a school entry exam. However, we know from parents that students often have a preference for group learning. We’ve also seen the stress caused by the changing GCSEs – these two elements have resulted in unprecedented demand for support at this stage which is why we have introduced this GCSE module.” Taught by specially trained maths tutors who utilise Mathnasium’s proprietary teaching materials
and techniques, The Mathnasium Method™ goes beyond traditional maths tutoring to develop real understanding and build a love for maths. Says Steve: “All Mathnasium students start by taking a unique customised assessment which pinpoints their learning needs so children aren’t wasting time reviewing concepts they already know. We then design a customised learning plan designed to close any educational gaps, which can be shared with your child’s school maths teacher for continuity. Mathnasium’s specially trained tutors then implement the learning plan in a relatable way and work with each student to ensure they master the material. The results are transformative— showing measurable changes in attitude, confidence, and school progress.” Mathnasium’s expert tutors look at different ways to tackle the same problem, which has been shown to help to boost confidence and deliver results. Students are also taught why the rules they’re learning work so that they fully understand them, not just memorise them. This can help with the new maths GCSE’s problem-solving questions, which The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) found to be harder than the other types of question in the revised exam. Mathnasium also gives students a “preview” of maths concepts to help prepare them for sixthform, university, and beyond. The Radlett centre is situated at 289 Watling Street and offers maths tutoring for children aged six to 16.

As the bookies take bets on what the Duke and Duchess or Cambridge will call their third baby, we take a trip down moniker memory lane. words: Chloe Kent, Press Association
ARTHUR OR ALICE? If William and Kate need ideas, these were the most E
popular names over the decades
ver since the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge announced their family’s set to expand once again, we’ve been itching to find out what the royal couple will name their new baby. Of course, we’ll likely have to wait until the tot arrives (their third baby’s due in April) to find out but that doesn’t stop us pondering. Their first two - George, four, and two-year-old Charlotte - both have very classic names (no surprise, given their royal status!) and the new baby probably will too, but there are still numerous options. Bookmakers William Hill has, once again, been taking bets. So far, if it’s a boy, the odds are: 9/1 for Arthur, 10/1 for Alfred, and 14/1 for Frederick (one of Queen Victoria’s sons was called Arthur, and it’s one of Prince William’s middle names, hence why it’s the bookies’ favourite). And if it’s a girl: 8/1 for Alice, 9/1 for Victoria, and 14/1 for Elizabeth. “Queen Victoria’s second daughter was called Alice, as well as Prince Philip’s mother, William’s

“Queen Victoria’s second daughter was called Alice, as well as Prince Philip’s mother, William’s greatgrandmother”
great-grandmother,” says Lucy Toseland-Bolton, blog editor at BabyCentre. As BabyCentre points out, Alice is one of the most enduring baby names of the past century in the UK. What better choice for a new princess than a moniker which has defined the 100 years up to her birth?
But what about the other popular options? Here’s a look back at the most-picked baby names through the decades...
1950s One of the most popular boys names in the Fifties was David, a Hebrew name which means ‘beloved’. And let’s face it, we’ve all got an uncle or mate or two called Dave. For girls, Susan reigned supreme, another Hebrew name which means ‘lily’.
1960s Paul became very popular in the 1960s, a Latin
name meaning ‘humble’, a trait befitting a future member of the Windsor clan. Although, it’s probably a safe bet that the royal couple will not be calling any future son Paul - it’s just not all that regal. Julie was very popular for girls, a French name which means ‘youthful’.
1970s Richard became very popular in the Seventies, an English name meaning ‘brave ruler’. However, the new royal baby is highly unlikely to ever become king or queen. Once born, they’ll be fifth in line to the throne, behind their grandfather, father, and two older siblings. Sarah was also a popular choice in this decade, a Hebrew name meaning ‘princess’; very fitting indeed if the new baby is a little girl.
1980s The name Michael became a favourite choice in the Eighties, which many attribute to the influence of ‘King of Pop’ Michael Jackson. However, this unofficial monarch is quite unlikely to be a royal namesake. The name Emma was also very popular for girls, a Latin name which means ‘universal’. Well, the royals are tasked with the duty of seeming relatable to all sections of society, so this might be a name William and Kate could consider...
1990s Thomas was extremely popular for boys in the Nineties, a Greek name which means ‘twin’. Megan also topped the baby name charts in this decade, a Welsh name meaning ‘pearl’ - but Prince Harry’s recent engagement to Meghan Markle means this one’s probably off the cards for the new royal tot.
2000s Although it’s actually quite an old name, Harry became extremely popular in the Noughties. This was likely due to the influence of the then-teenage prince Harry, who had become something of a heart-throb, combined with the Harry Potter
franchise blossoming into a staple of British culture. The name Harry is English, and means ‘army ruler’ - a wild coincidence, considering Prince Harry’s stint in the military. That said, his name is actually Henry, with Harry being a diminutive. For girls, Olivia became very popular, an English name meaning ‘descendant’.
Present day “The name Michael became a favourite choice in the Eighties, which many attribute to the influence of ‘King of Pop’ Michael Jackson”
Ella Joynes, author of Baby Names 2018, predicts that gender-neutral names will be big this year. “Names like Max, Alex, Charlie and Andy are all going to be big winners in the coming years, as parents move towards more fluid notions of gender and identity,” she writes. There’s also a predicted rise in feminist names. Ella believes the current political climate will be prompting expectant parents to reach back into the history of women’s suffrage for baby name inspiration. Names also tend to cycle in popularity every 100 years or so, so keep an eye out for names that were popular during the First World War - there’s already been a large surge of Elsies and Georges (again).

How
posh is YOUR baby? Tatler releases the guide to toddler etiquette
W
e all like to think we know how to teach our children good manners, but it looks like there’s an extra layer of rules for ‘posh’ babies – according to high-society bible Tatler’s toddler etiquette guide. The upper class publication has released a bizarre but tongue-in-cheek list of do’s and don’ts for how parents can raise their little darlings to be a highbrow child. So despite the fact they’re still in nappies, our little ones are already being judged on their manners. Explaining that the advice isn’t about parenting but toddler etiquette, the guide says: “To be clear, this is about toddler etiquette. Not about parenting. Not about allowing them to grow like saplings in myriad beautiful and compelling ways. Not about showing them boundaries without compromising their human rights. Not about role modelling or unconditional love. It’s about etiquette, which is a customary code of behaviour when among other people.. so, if manners hold no sway over the way you and your toddler interact with the world, then, in a loving way, leave this page.” 54 FEBRUARY 2018
The guide includes controversial advice from writer Annabel Rivkin on the only way to deal with ‘a***hole’ toddlers. Remove the offender immediately or you are ruining everything for everyone - and putting your child in a position where, forevermore, people will say, ‘that child is such a screamer.’ She also advises against trying to show off parenting skills by disciplining them, and instead opting for a quick fix of simply taking them outside…
IN TODDLER COMPANY Hitting is never cute or fun or anything other than revolting. It doesn’t matter if it’s with an inflatable sword or a frying pan, it is not OK. And remember that toddlers enjoy nothing more than oppressive repetition, so if they hit once, they will hit 20 times. The only thing you can do is be mortified and physically restrain.
Bedtime Make it happen, especially if you are sharing a holiday villa with other families. British toddlers are
“Remember that toddlers enjoy nothing more than oppressive repetition, so if they hit once, they will hit 20 times”
like vampires – they become unpleasant after dark.
Wardrobe crises Bizarrely, the guide also includes the proper etiquette needed to deal with disputes over the fancy dressing-up box. The magazine claims that the host child should have the first choice from the box because they must have their favourite costume. For goodness’ sake, allow the host child to wear his/her favourite’ adding ‘Would you let a complete stranger snatch your most treasured possession just to prove you are big-hearted? If you would, then seek help. “And no points if their favourite is a tiger or a pirate. If they prefer a historical figure, such as Emmeline Pankhurst or William Shakespeare, then your child is moving up the ladder. And full marks if their fancy dress of choice is any of the following: barrister, polo player, viscount.
Fine dining You’re trying to enjoy a lovely meal out but your toddler has other ideas, knocking their cutlery to the floor while attempting to eat the salt shaker. What do you do? No points for pulling out the iPad (so tempting, but remember you will have to face all the looks of disgust from the other diners) Earn points if you prepared a neatly packed bag of books, drawing activities, and games. Do not get emotional about what your toddler eats, preferably ever. But certainly not around other children. None of that appalling,
‘Look how nicely Oliver is eating his asparagus.’ Keep the beasts far enough apart that they cannot steal each other’s food and thus ignite tantrums.
IN GROWN-UP COMPANY Vigilance Remember that toddlers have a similar psychological make-up to psychopaths: they are all about immediate satisfaction and rarely consider consequences. So keep a very close eye on yours. If they hurt themselves, or anyone else, or break things, then this is your fault. It’s all your fault.
Snubbing Don’t let your toddler be the one with selective hearing. It is distinctly unattractive and disrespectful. Make them answer. Ignoring is different from shyness. No excuses.
Accidents It’s insane to let a newly potty-trained toddler sit on anything that may be hard to clean. Or valuable. Or antique. It is your job to drag them to the loo at oppressively short intervals.
Busting some moves “Dancing is always brilliant” states Tatler. “ In the street, at the table, in the sitting room, in the garden or at the playground. Dancing should be encouraged at all times – it provides infectious joy. But let it play out without drawing attention.”
To round up their dos and don’ts of toddler etiquette, the Tatler guide has a vital reminder to parents to know your audience “Many people love children. Some people don’t,” it states. www.tatler.com

How to get out of a style rut G
etting stuck in a rut happens to everyone. Especially at the start of a new year, you start to get bored with what you are wearing and don’t know how to change your shopping habits. If you have ever felt nothing but intense boredom at the sight of your wardrobe and wished you could just throw it all out and start from scratch, you know what it feels like to be stuck in a style rut. A most miserable place where clothes you once loved and felt inspired by, now just seem dull and underwhelming. The key to getting out of a style rut is to break through old thinking patterns and the comfortable, monotonous routine you have built up for yourself, put on your creative hat and immerse yourself in new inspiration. The best way to get out of a rut is to get some outside help. Most people only wear about 10% of the clothes in their wardrobe, so it is easier for somebody else to see the gems in your wardrobe than you can. I’ll go to a client’s house who has said “I have nothing to wear” and after I spend a couple of hours editing her wardrobe and putting new looks together she realises that she has a lot of great outfits waiting to be worn. Here are some tips you may want to try1. Assess one part of your wardrobe - Such as your jeans - spend some time trying them on, looking in the mirror and asking yourself some questions, such as; “When did I last wear these?,”
“Are they flattering for my figure?” or “Do I feel good in them?” You might find a pair that you had forgotten you had and you can incorporate back into your wardrobe again. 2. Take a style risk - Do you need a new pair of shoes or bag and feel bored of the same things you normally buy? Then take more of a risk with your accessories purchase, perhaps buy the brightly coloured trainers over the blue ones, or a bright yellow bag instead of a black one. Just by adding one thing different it can rejuvenate your look and make you feel more confident. 3. Try shopping in a new store - Go in and walk around, or go online and take a browse, you might be surprised what you like and how the style could influence your outfits and looks. 4. Give yourself a pep talk - You need to be prepared to feel differently when you’re coming out of a rut. When you try on something that’s out of your comfort zone, you may feel nervous or excited! This is the time to pause and have a conversation with yourself. What’s stopping you from wearing this new style, colour or accessory? Maybe this new look is the real you; the part of you that’s wanted to be expressed for a while. Give yourself a chance. Don’t put the brakes on. Experiment and have fun. As an Image consultant, I can help with all aspects of your wardrobe, style and shopping. Introducing…
My very own facelift procedure (It’s non-surgical!)
“I just look so old. The market’s full of youngsters in their 20s, I can’t believe that any interviewer will take me seriously”
W
hen Susanna came to see me she was stuck in a rut. In her mid-40s, she had been working as a supply teacher for several years. Although she was desperate to apply for more permanent and more senior jobs, she lacked the self-confidence to do so. Susanna was convinced that the loose skin on her face made her look far older than she really was, and that interviewers would discriminate against her because of her age. While she was desperate for a cosmetic procedure to tighten her skin and restore her looks, she was also very nervous about her pupils and colleagues knowing she’d had work done. It was vital, she said, that any change was as subtle as possible. In the meanwhile, she scoured the industry press for adverts for permanent teaching positions – and applied for none of them. It was around that time that I finished developing my very own non-surgical face-lifting technique, called the R-Lift. It is so revolutionary that, I’m delighted to announce, last month we received a trademark for it! I started thinking about the technique four years ago, when I began seeing lots of people with what I call “the pillow look”. Their cheeks had been filled out in an effort to lift their skin, making them look, to my mind, a bit like hamsters. It was trendy at the time (!), but I knew that it wasn’t right for our patients, who wanted a much more natural look. Over the subsequent 18 months, I worked to develop a procedure that gave the same effect as a 60 FEBRUARY 2018
facelift, but without patients having to go under the knife; using a minimum number of needles; and at a fraction of the cost. Most importantly, it needed to leave patients looking normal – not fake. With the R-Lift we inject small amounts of dermal fillers into as few as two points on either side of the face. Unlike ordinary fillers, we run a cannula beneath the skin’s surface, to release the fibrous bands that fuse skin to muscle and this fades deep wrinkles. The minimal use of needles means pain is unlikely - 99% of patients don’t require any anesthetic and bruising is extremely rare. It also meant we could keep the cost down to £900 at the lower end. And the results? The R-Lift refreshes and restores your skin, making you look younger – but still like you. People won’t know you’ve had anything done, they’ll just think you’re looking great. Take Susana. She had the R-Lift about 18 months ago, and hasn’t looked back since. Within weeks, she noticed such a difference that she had the confidence and self-assurance to apply for the jobs she had previously shied away from. That insecure and self-doubting teacher who had approached me months before was given a permanent teaching job soon after. When I heard from her recently, she had been given additional responsibilities. This procedure is only available here at Riverbanks. If you’d like to find out more, please hit ‘reply’. We’re really excited about the new trademark, and would love to tell you more about how it can help you look fabulous, too.

WHY SHOULDER REPLACEMENT SURGERY IS ON THE INCREASE Anatomic Shoulder Replacement & Reverse Shoulder Replacement
S
houlder joint replacement was first carried out in the United Stated back in the 1950s but has never been as common as hip or knee replacements However, in the past few years techniques have progressed and the procedure is becoming much more common. Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Mr Adam Rumian explains what shoulder replacement surgery entails and how it has developed in recent years. Q: What is a shoulder replacement? A: The shoulder is a ‘ball and socket’ joint like the hip joint– the ‘ball’ at the end of your upper arm bone fitting into a ‘socket’ in the shoulder blade. A replacement means a metal ball is fitted to your upper arm and a plastic cup-like device inside the socket. This is called an anatomic shoulder replacement because it reproduces the normal shoulder anatomy but it does rely on having intact tendons around the shoulder to move the joint. Q: Why has it taken so long for shoulder replacements to become a bigger part of orthopaedic surgery? A: Osteoarthritis of the shoulder is far less common than in the hip or the knee as it is not a weight bearing joint. Over the last twenty years we have a better understanding of shoulder disease and pathology and this has led more successful shoulder replacement surgery that we can offer patients. Q: How have the surgery techniques and equipment progressed over the past ten years? A: Techniques and instruments have improved to provide good exposure of the socket for accurate placement of the prosthesis. The socket and ball designs have improved to reflect patients’ variable anatomy. Q: What would make you consider a shoulder replacement? A: One of the most common reasons why people

need shoulder replacement surgery is osteoarthritis, a condition that makes joints stiff and painful, and impairs movement. However a traumatic injury such as a fracture of the shoulder joint may require a shoulder replacement. Q: What is a Reverse Shoulder Replacement? A: Standard shoulder replacement is an anatomic shoulder replacement as mentioned above. A reverse shoulder replacement puts the ball where the socket should be and the socket where the ball should be. This allows the shoulder joint to be moved by a single muscle the deltoid muscle. The reverse shoulder replacement is used for patients who have a painful shoulder and limited movement due to badly torn rotator cuff tendons or an arthritic shoulder with torn tendons.
Q: What sort of results can patients expect after surgery? A: Most patients can expect excellent pain relief and improved range of movement of their shoulder. Some patients may achieve almost full movement but the final movement also depends on the range of movement patients have prior to surgery.
Mr Rumian studied medicine at Cambridge University and Imperial College School of Medicine before specialist training in Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery on the highly regarded North-West Thames rotation in London. He has published many research papers, presented work at numerous national and international conferences and has been awarded a MD Higher Research degree from the University of London. Mr Rumian is also responsible for teaching higher surgical trainees surgery for trauma and shoulder and elbow disorders and is a faculty member and lecturer on courses held to teach advanced surgical techniques.
Q: How long would you expect a shoulder replacement to last – is it on a par with hip or knee replacements? A: Most studies record 90 to 95% of shoulder replacements lasting 10 years so they are approaching the same outcomes as hip and knee replacements. www.spireharpenden.com
Mr Rumian’s clinical interests include arthroscopic (keyhole) and minimally invasive reconstructive surgery for shoulder and elbow disorders and injuries; shoulder and elbow joint replacement surgery.
Q: Is there a ‘typical’ age of a patient needing a replacement or is it something that covers all age groups? A: The common age group of patients who have shoulder replacements are mid-sixties to midseventies. However there are patients in all age groups who may benefit from shoulder replacement when other treatment options have failed.

One Stop Doctors has every angle covered with 3D breast check
One Stop Doctors, a private Clinic in Hertfordshire is championing innovation in prostate and breast health. Don’t get caught short! New minimally invasive treatment for men with enlarged prostate
H
aving to get up several times in the night and plan your toilet stops on an hourly basis can dramatically impact daily life. According to research published in the journal Reviews in Urology, an enlarged prostate is really common in men over 50, while it’s prevalence is still significant in young men – 10% for men in their thirties, and 20% for men in their forties. The cause of prostate enlargement is unproven, but is believed to be linked to hormonal changes as a man ages. One Stop Doctors is first to introduce a new procedure - The Prostatic Urethral Lift (PUL), using the UroLift® System, to treat men with enlarged prostates, Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), that suffer with symptoms including difficulty urinating as well as increased frequency and urgency. UroLift is a minimally invasive, day case procedure to treat and address the symptoms of lower urinary tract symptoms that arise from BPH. Mr Aza Mohammed, Consultant Urologist at One Stop Doctors, explains, “In the past, when confronted with the choice of surgery or medication to treat BPH, many men have opted to live with the condition, preferring to put up with symptoms than risk a more invasive procedure that might have side effects. The UroLift System offers
68 FEBRUARY 2018
an alternative solution that has proven success and a quick recovery time, with any common side effects usually resolved within a few weeks of the procedure. Additionally, the preservation of sexual function amongst patients is one of the most unique benefits of the system when compared to other options.” To contact One Stop Doctors visit www.onestopdoctors.co.uk or call 01442 331 900.
Most women will likely undergo a mammogram at some point in their lives and several many times. In the UK, every woman after the age of 50 should expect to undergo a mammogram either by invitation by the National Health Service Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP) or in a private screening programme. Why undergo a screening mammogram? The aim is to detect breast cancer when the cancer is at the earliest stage possible (before it becomes a lump that can be felt). The evidence has clearly shown that the treatment required for early stage breast cancers is much less invasive. Also, treating breast cancer at an early stage can improve the chances for a complete cure and lower the risk of breast cancer recurring. Mr Kelvin Chong, Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon and Breast Specialist at One Stop Doctors advises, “A recent technological advancement in mammography to improve pickup rate of breast cancers is the advent of 3D mammography. Instead of taking just two images of the breast as in conventional mammograms, 3D mammography takes multiple images around the breast and produces a computergenerated three-dimensional image. This aids the radiologist to better identify small breast cancers that may be obscured by other structures in the breast. Costs for a 3D mammography starts at £255. WHITE IN WINTER W
hile black dresses may have been making the headlines over in the US, as stars banded together at the Golden Globes in support of the Time’s Up campaign, back home we’ve been seeing celebs kitted out stunning all-white ensembles that are making us rethink the pale hue. Everywhere from award dos to the Celebrity Big Brother launch - yes, really - stylish ladies of all ages have been proving that lighter shades shouldn’t just be confined to the summer months, and that the American adage, ‘don’t wear white after Labour Day’ (meaning September), is patently false. Inspired by a host of fashionable females, here are four chic ways to wear white in winter...
Suits Trouser suits have been making a massive comeback in fashion recently, the once fussy form of tailoring now a viable option day or night.Take your cue from models Arizona Muse and Ashley James by choosing a longline jacket and teaming it with wide-leg trousers to give your look a relaxed feel. It can be tricky to pull off a white dress without looking like you’re attempting to upstage an unsuspecting bride, but actresses Phoebe WallerBridge and Charlotte Hope prove that it can be done, and done well. In fact, a white dress is the coolest way to do black-tie right now, and if that means shopping from the bridal department, so be it (unless you are actually a wedding guest, in

If white is an uncommon fixture in your wardrobe, but you’re not keen on a big overhaul, the best way to incorporate it is through outerwear. Follow Meghan Markle’s lead and wrap yourself up in an ivory trench, combining minimalist elegance with floaty femininity. Not only will it keep you cosy while temperatures plummet toward the minus numbers, but as the ultimate neutral, it’ll complement all your pre-existing outfits, making a bold statement without any risk of clashing. f course, it’s all down to your decor taste - which is as individual as your choice of partner - so you could opt for curvy furniture and sensual textures, feature racy red accessories, or take a quirky approach with comic book art. What’s key is bringing romance to your rooms and conjuring the perfect space for snuggling as a singleton, or for flirting and wooing on Valentine’s Day and beyond.

Chablis & Roses Pink Velvet Sofa, from £1,120, The French Bedroom Company
Go on, indulge your decor passion... Flirt with feminine touches: White and pink are the perfect partners for a seductive scheme, and the addition of sensual textures - velvet upholstery and a sheepskin rug - will ramp up the romantic atmosphere. In a pared-back setting, subtle gilded touches (so on-trend), which hint at your feelings, have the space to star. Serve up love on a plate: Why go public with your love? Instead, avoid crowded over-priced restaurants and enjoy the occasion in private, with an intimate meal at home. It’s worth remembering there’s a close relationship between love and food - because you’re using all the same senses; taste, touch, smell and sight. If you’re too tongue-tied for a gushing declaration of your feelings, however, you could simply let the tableware spell out it out... Let the wall ‘Pop’ the question: Online daters always rate a GSOH (good sense of humour) as one of the top qualities needed in a prospective partner. Witty decor - from a comic-style mural, through to quirky lights and accessories - could go a long way to proving you not only see the lighter side of life, but are also uber-stylish. Show your love with heartfelt details: It’s the little things in life that really make the difference, and just a small token will show you care. Use one tiny accessory to make the special point, or perhaps several, hung on door handles or pinned up at intervals, leading the way to that Valentine’s Day surprise...

VENTILATION, VENTILATION, VENTILATION
I
f you own a conservatory or have been in a glass extension or indeed a room with inadequate ventilation on a hot sunny day, you will have first-hand knowledge of how vital proper ventilation is. Conservatories, orangeries and any glass extension need to be designed to deal with the extremes of temperature that they will need to endure in both Winter & Summer. It is therefore vital that sufficient ventilation is incorporated into each and every design to ensure a pleasant living environment all year long. Consequently it is wise to invest in sufficient opening roof vents and sufficient top hung and/or side hung opening vents when building a conservatory, orangery or extension of glass, as retro-fitting them is extremely expensive, disruptive and not always possible. Modern day conservatories or orangeries, along with all double glazed windows, doors and roofs should be specified with Low E Argon filled sealed units with warm edge spacers and soft coat glass or equivalent to deliver the highest possible thermal
84 FEBRUARY 2018
efficiency during the Winter. In Summer double glazing that has been treated with a reflective coating or tint will reduce the amount of solar gain, particularly on south facing glass structures. In addition each double glazed conservatory and orangery, whether made of aluminium, hardwood or UPVC should be fitted with plenty of opening vents to deal with the hotter days. The current Building Regulations in Approved Document F: Ventilation, require that “There shall be adequate means of ventilation provided for people in the building” and “For new dwellings, a target of four air changes per hour is required to ensure suitable ventilation.” When it comes to the fundamental principles of replacing existing windows in a dwelling “The installation of replacement windows should ideally achieve the requirements for new buildings. However, if this is not possible the replacement windows should not make the existing capability worse.” Primarily there are two different types of
“Background ventilation helps protect the fabric of any building from the harmful effects of condensation and mould etc”
ventilation that is required within a building under current Building Regulations: 1) Background Ventilation Background ventilation helps protect the fabric of any building from the harmful effects of condensation and mould etc. Consequently, where existing windows provided background ventilation, any replacement windows should also provide background ventilation. However alternative ventilation can be provided to so window designs can be amended without “breaking the rules”, such as mechanical ventilation or high level air bricks fitted ideally at least 1.7 metres above the finished floor level to avoid discomfort from draughts. Where trickle ventilators are fitted to existing windows and/or doors an appropriately sized trickle vent or air brick etc. should be installed in the new windows/doors or existing wall. The golden rule is that whatever replaces existing must not legally lessen ventilation. 2) Purge Ventilation Purge ventilation is supposed to improve thermal comfort and reduce overheating during the summer as well as being primarily required to remove high levels of pollutants and water vapours. For hinged or pivot windows that open 30 degrees or more, or for sliding sash windows, the area of the opening should be at least one twentieth of the floor area of the room. For hinged or or pivot windows that open less than 30 degrees, the area of the opening should be at least one tenth of the floor area of the room. In summary ventilation must never, never be reduced. For example, if an existing casement window has two side hung opening sashes, each opening 50% of the total area of the window, property owners are not permitted to reduce this area without installing additional ventilation to that room that complies with the current England and Wales Building Regulations. It is therefore essential when designing glass extensions such as conservatories and orangeries that sufficient manual or electric opening roof vents are installed as these act like chimneys, taking away the hot air, as well as having opening vents fitted all along the walls of any double glazed glass extension to allow a constant air-flow on warm days.
