Five trending family travel destinations We caught up with luxury travel specialists Winged Boots to see where’s hot for summer 2019 Puglia, Italy
Croatia
W
hether you’d describe your family as a descendent of the adventurous Swiss Family Robinson, or relate more to the Kardashians, there’s a summer holiday destination that’s ideal for you and your brood. From the foodie haven of Italy to the fun-fuelled theme parks in Orlando, wave goodbye to the winter blues by booking the perfect summer getaway with Winged Boots, a personal travel management company based in Essex. Well-versed in tailor-made trips, the expert team at Winged Boots will work with you to ensure each aspect of your itinerary is bespoke to suit every member of the party. Whether that’s organising car seats in your transfers to arranging for a chilled gin and tonic to be waiting at hotel check-in, you can feel safe in the knowledge that Winged Boots has got you covered. We caught up with David Ox, Winged Boots’ managing director to get his top destination recommendations for 2019.
Puglia, Italy
Best for: Foodies
The heel of Italy’s boot, Puglia’s charming coastal towns and sun-drenched beaches have long been a summer haven for the locals. So why not do as the Italians do and hot foot it to the seaside region this summer? “Expect a leisurely way of life fuelled by delicious rustic cuisine with a side order of rich culture,” explains David Ox, managing director at Winged Boots. Whether you visit the beautiful fishing villages and fashionable Medieval town of Gargano or the maze-like white city of Ostuni, you’re sure to enjoy the authenticity of this southern Italian gem. “Lecce, known as ‘Florence of the South’ is famed for its baroque buildings, its large Roman amphitheatre in the central piazza, and its abundance of twirling side streets embellished with wine bars, traditional family-run eateries and quaint cafés,” Ox adds. Here you’ll discover a wealth of delectable dishes that all hold one ingredient at 16 FEBRUARY 2019
their core: pasta, of course! But more specifically, Orecchiette – a local pasta that’s made from just flour and water. Other main foodstuffs include freshly caught seafood, more pasta and Taralli, the Italian’s answer to a pretzel.
Belek, Turkey
Best for: All inclusive A destination that has gone a little quiet on the British holiday scene in recent years, Turkey is back and it’s roaring louder than ever. But why? “Turkey has a reasonable flight time (approximately four hours direct from London), boasts a beautiful coastline that’s lapped by the turquoise water of the Mediterranean Sea, and offers a fantastic choice of luxury all-inclusive hotels,” Ox says. “Let’s be honest, there isn’t a lot more you need for a summer holiday.” Belek is known for its sandy beaches and shimmering sea, so be sure to pack your best swimwear. Oh, and for the golfers, this town also offers a wealth of courses for you to swing your nine iron on. What’s more, there’s bountiful choice when it comes to day trips. From Greco-Roman ruins and majestic waterfalls to shopping boutiques and boat tours, there’s something to satisfy every age and taste.
Florida, USA
Best for: Adrenaline junkies Across the pond, Orlando, Florida shouldn’t be overlooked for your summer 2019 getaway. Think theme parks, your children’s favourite characters brought to life, and year-round sunshine. “Florida is great for families as it can satisfy all ages in cohesion,” Ox explains. “Teenagers will enjoy the

larger rides, there are plenty of smaller attractions for younger children, plus the characters are sure to delight both kids and adults.” It’s almost a fact that Mickey Mouse and co put a smile on everyone’s face. But Florida isn’t all Disney and Universal characters – it’s also home to multiple golf courses, deluxe hotels complete with inviting pools and various malls that offer great shopping. If that’s not enough, Miami is only a four-hour drive away so a few days at the beach is highly recommended and within reach. “Families often visit both Orlando and Miami when travelling to Florida to enjoy the sunshine and Miami’s beautiful coast,” Ox says. “Winged Boots are well-versed in organising car hire and tailored itineraries to suit a family’s specific needs, so if you’re planning a multi-centre trip be sure to give us a call.”

Tenerife, Canary Islands
Best for: Multi-generation getaways
Arguably the biggest trend in family travel, multiTenerife, Canary Islands
generation holidays are becoming more popular and show no signs of slowing. “Consisting of at least three generations, recently family holidays often include children, parents and grandparents,” Ox comments. With today’s demanding work schedules, this provides a great way for families to spend more time together. What’s more, having two sets of adults is sure to lessen the strain on parents with active children. The Canary Islands are an ideal summer 2019 destination, especially for ‘3G’ getaways. “Tenerife has a minimal flight time which is usually appreciated by the very young as well as older members of the party,” Ox says. “Plus, the destination offers great weather, plenty of hotels, lovely beaches and throngs of bars, restaurants and cafes.” Here you won’t struggle to find a restaurant that serves Paella as well as chicken nuggets, or somewhere that has a great ocean view but also has football on in the background. A well-rounded destination for all, be sure to visit Siam Park for a day of splashing fun and water flumes.
Croatia
Best for: Unimpressed teenagers You know the drill. Your perfect little darlings are at that ‘difficult’ stage where nothing you do is ‘cool’ enough – we get it, and we know it makes booking a family holiday a little tricky. Enter Croatia. This European gem is as versatile as your teen’s moods. Brimming with history, both ancient and cinematic, Croatia’s cobbled towns, sandy beaches and natural wonders are sure to delight. “For Game Of Thrones fans, Dubrovnik is fantastic,” Ox recommends. Famous for being the filming location of King’s Landing in the fantasy epic, walking tours and other exciting experiences await for fans of the HBO series. Alternatively, for beach bums and a cosmopolitan vibe, Split is just the ticket. This thriving city has struck the perfect balance of tradition and modernity with its impressive Roman monuments and streets lined with bars and restaurants. It’s a great way to discover Dalmatian life! FEBRUARY 2019 17

ith a history that spans more than 114 years, Danish Design House Georg Jensen was founded in 1904 by Georg Jensen himself. The brand represents quality craftsmanship and timeless aesthetic design, creating silverware and flatware, fine jewellery, watches, accessories and a home collection. The philosophy of Georg Jensen himself was to create designs possessing both functionality and beauty. His artisanal skill and artistic talent combined with his continuous ability to identify and support design talent was the foundation on which he built the Georg Jensen brand in Copenhagen. 24 FEBRUARY 2019
Georg Jensen also prided himself and his business on collaboration with iconic designers of the time – an honoured tradition that is still ongoing today. The design house has seen collaborations from Henning Koppel, Prince Sigvaard Bernadotte, Arne Jacobsen, Nanna Ditzel, Nina Koppel, Vivianna Torun Bülow-Hübe, Zaha Hadid and Patricia Urquiola to name a few. “In 1987, Nina Koppel designed a silver ring that led to the creation of the iconic Fusion collection” is a departure from traditional jewellery because it encourages the wearer to be part of the jewellery design by offering endless combinations which fit together perfectly to create one unique ring. The ability to design a Fusion ring according to the tastes of the wearer is what has always set Fusion apart. Whether it is rose, yellow or white gold with or without diamonds, the rings can be put together in any combination, seamlessly interlocking with each other. Fusion represents an iconic chapter in the rich history of Georg Jensen designs by combining the finest materials with the highest class of craftsmanship. She graduated in 1966 and later that year established her own workshop. She began her collaboration with Georg Jensen in the 1980’s with her initial designs created in silver. In 1987, Nina Koppel designed a silver ring that led to the creation of the iconic Fusion collection. Luxury in the Heart of St Albans Stepping into Sopwell House it is hard to believe I am only in St Albans and not walking into a five star hotel in the heart of London, it really does have the wow factor
S
opwell House, Where do I start? We were greeted not only by happy and attentive staff, but also a roaring fire and an amazing display of gingerbread houses presented in reception. The smell of the gingerbread and log fire was so welcoming. We were greeted by a friendly receptionist and then shown to our room by the porter, John. We were lucky enough to be staying in one of the Mews suites, a short walk out of the hotel and through some beautiful gates, making it a more private and luxury place to stay. As John showed us to our suite, he explained that now refurbished, it was once an old stable block. There are 16 mews suites, all surrounded by beautiful flowers and twinkly lights – and right in the centre an infinity hydrotherapy pool for Mews guests only. I felt like I was part of some sort of luxury and exclusive club. The room we stayed in was called Hornbeam. John made sure we knew

where everything was and how everything worked, again illustrating to us that Sopwell House prides itself on amazing customer service and attention to detail. My husband and I were celebrating our wedding anniversary and the staff had gone over and above by leaving us rose petals on the bed, a card and complimentary macaroons in our room – a lovely touch. The suite was so impressive and elegantly decorated. The living area had a fireplace and beautiful sofas and the bed was huge and so comfortable. The bathroom was spotless with an array of luxury products included and a huge rainfall shower head. My husband and I thought this would be a great time to try the hydro pool out, so we were impressed to see flip flops and extra towels available as well as big white fluffy dressing gowns. It was the perfect hour with glass of bubbles in hand, relaxing whilst the sun went down and all garden started to light up. It was completely relaxing and romantic all at the same time, what a way to spend the afternoon – and we were lucky enough to get that time all to ourselves. In the evening we booked into the restaurant, stopping in the cocktail bar first for a Special Festive cocktail and it was stunning. We were greeted and shown to our table in the restaurant which had pretty lighting and relaxing music thanks to the resident pianist. The staff were so attentive and everyone was so lovely to wish us a happy anniversary and remember our names – I really felt this was such a nice touch.

After a glass of Champagne and some yummy amuse bouche sent from the chef, we decided to order our courses. I went for roasted quail to start, then opted for Norfolk turkey and chocolate log for dessert. My husband went for press of black leg chicken to start, rump of lamb for main and cheese board to follow. The assistant restaurant manager Lorenzo recommend a wine to go along with our meals as we fancied a nice bottle of red and we went for a Malbec which was to die for and went gloriously with our meal. Throughout the meal we were looked after by Alina who was attentive, professional and so happy-go-lucky she really made the service for us. The food at Sopwell House is incredible, every mouthful was bursting with flavour and so inventive with twists and turns with a touch of something different. We were lucky enough to meet the chef and give him our compliments. After dinner we retired to the bar in the conservatory where we were looked after by Dale. My husband is partial to a Bloody Mary and I love an Espresso Martini. Dale was keen to make sure our cocktails were to our tastes – asking for souror sweet or spicy or very spicy Bloody Mary’s! I can honestly say this was the first time my husband hasn’t sent back his Bloody Mary to be spicier! I can honestly say this was the first time my husband hasn’t sent back his Bloody Mary to be more spicy. It was a lovely end to a spectacular day and night at Sopwell House and I can honestly say without question we will be back and will make use of the spa. From start to finish it was an incredible stay topped off with a beautiful English breakfast and a walk of the grounds.
If you want amazing customer service, luxury rooms and incredible food with inventive cocktails plus a spa to top it all off, Sopwell is for you. I left feeling relaxed and knowing I had enjoyed one of my favourite anniversaries yet. I highly recommend Sopwell House, five stars all the way. Reinvigorating Your Space
T
he start of a new year is a time of reflection for many, but instead of turning your attention to what you want to change or what you want to achieve this year, think about this – how do I want to feel? Your environment plays a huge role in shaping your mood (you’ll know this if you’ve ever felt the glare of office lights for too long) and there’s arguably no environment more important to your wellbeing than your home. Our homes are as much a reflection of our personalities as they are a haven to relax in, a space to entertain friends and family, and a place to make memories with loved ones. The post-Christmas period allows you to see your home with fresh eyes and provides a great opportunity to start thinking about how you could reinvigorate your space. Take a minute to imagine that this is the first time you’ve set foot in your home; look deeply at your space, notice where your eye is drawn to, and pause to consider your intentions for each room. Ask yourself a series of questions – what mood am I trying to evoke? Is this a space I want to feel relaxed? Do I want to feel inspired? How can this room best speak to mine, and my guests, emotional intelligence? – then consider what visual fodder would help you achieve this feeling. Sometimes this is as simple as having a quick declutter; being very deliberate with your selection of objects and creating some space in your
immediate surroundings. Whereas another occasion might call for the introduction of something: it’s time to address the space we never got around to filling with the artwork that we haven’t yet seen. Picasso once said: “the purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls.” I for one feel inclined to agree. The value of art extends far beyond visual pleasure; if chosen correctly, art can evoke a feeling, transform a mood, and demonstrate your, and your home’s, uniqueness. Perhaps it’s a cliché to say that art makes a house into a home, but that doesn’t mean it’s not true. We associate “home” with a feeling of warmth,

cosiness, personality, and belonging. A house serves a purpose; a home is one. The right piece of artwork can act as an asset to your home, so perhaps it’s time to introduce something new and reinvigorate your space for the new year. You’d be surprised how much of an impact it can have. It’s not always easy to know where to begin, but that’s where Gallery Rouge can help. With over 11 years of experience in the industry, hundreds of original pieces of artwork to choose from, and a friendly customer focused mentality, you’re in no better hands than theirs when it comes to selecting art. “T
here is no other country in the world, besides my own, whose way of life I like so much. I love English traditions, English politeness, English architecture. I even love English cooking.” Christian Dior (1905–57) The V&A has opened the largest exhibition ever staged in the UK on the House of Dior – the museum’s biggest fashion exhibition since Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty in 2015. From 1947 to the present day, Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams traces the history and impact of one of the 20th century’s most influential couturiers, and the six artistic directors who have succeeded him, to explore the enduring influence of the fashion house. Based on the major exhibition Christian Dior: Couturier du Rêve, organised by the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, the exhibition is reimagined for the V&A. A brand-new section explores, for the first time, the designer’s fascination with British culture. Dior admired the grandeur of the great houses and gardens of Britain, as well as Britishdesigned ocean liners, including the Queen Mary. He also had a preference for Savile Row suits. His first UK fashion show took place at London’s Savoy Hotel, and in 1952 he established Christian Dior London. The exhibition investigates Dior’s creative collaborations with British manufacturer, also
focusing on his most notable early British clients, from author Nancy Mitford to ballet dancer Margot Fonteyn. A highlight will be the Christian Dior dress worn by Princess Margaret for her 21st birthday celebrations, generously on loan from the Museum of London following conservation work. The exhibition also brings to life Dior’s spectacular fashion shows staged in the UK’s most luxurious stately homes, including Blenheim Palace in 1954, of which several ensembles are now in the V&A’s collection. Drawn from the extensive Dior Archives, the exhibition presents over 500 objects, with over 200 rare Haute Couture garments shown alongside accessories, fashion photography, film, vintage perfume, original make-up, illustrations, magazines, and Christian Dior’s personal possessions. It also showcases highlights from the V&A’s world-class Couture collections, including the iconic Bar Suit, gifted to the museum by the House of Dior in 1960 with the help of Cecil Beaton. The exhibition highlights Dior’s total design vision, encompassing garments, accessories and fragrances, revealing the sources of inspiration that defined the House of Dior’s aesthetic. From the daring designs of Yves Saint Laurent to the rational style of Marc Bohan, the flamboyance of Gianfranco Ferré, the exuberance of John Galliano, the minimalism of Raf Simons, and Maria Grazia Chiuri’s feminist vision of fashion, the exhibition shows how each successive artistic director has stayed true to Dior’s vision of Haute Couture, while bringing their own creative sensibilities to the House. Designers for Dior also spotlights the work of the subsequent six key artistic directors since Christian Dior’s death in 1957.

St. Francis’ College
celebrates 85th Anniversary I n 1933 a group of Sisters of Charity of Jesus and Mary from Ghent came to Letchworth Garden City to open St. Francis’ College. They would be delighted to know that the College continues to thrive and celebrated its 85th Anniversary in 2018. The College opened its doors in September 1933. The kindergarten and preparatory department opened on September 4th and the residential and senior school on September 20th. The College opened with 29 pupils, but numbers soon increased to 200 by the end of the 1930s. Plans were quickly drawn up to build a new building for the College overlooking the Broadway and in 1939 the large Broadway building was opened just as the Second World War began. Over the last 85 years there have been many changes at the College. There have been physical improvements and additions to the building and teaching in the 21st century bears no resemblance

to what took place in the early days, but the College continues to offer a wide range of extra- curricular activities as well as encouraging girls to do their best in their academic studies just as they did in the 1930s. The Sisters continued to run the College until 1983 when they decided they wished to focus their attention on other areas of work, and the management of the College was handed over to St. Francis’ College Trust. The College became and still is a multi-denominational Christian community that welcomes pupils of all or no faith. In 2019 St. Francis’ College can be proud of its achievements over the last 85 years. It is a happy, successful school where pupils thrive in an environment that recognises the unique qualities of each individual. Best for Boys I
t’s a common misconception that parents must choose between outstanding pastoral care and high academic aspirations in a school. At St Columba’s, the opposite is true: the superb level of individual nurturing we give to every boy from the age of four is precisely what enables our pupils to achieve their own best standard further down the line. Ultimately, it’s the daily conversations with Reception parents, the telephone feedback about a ten-year-old’s spellings, the chats with little boys over a morning snack that produce our excellent A Level results, our Russell Group University entrants and our Oxbridge candidates. Just as importantly, though, the individualized care given to each Prep School pupil also lays the foundations for creating caring, rounded young men who are equipped to enter the world and make their mark in a wide range of careers and vocations. There is currently a national debate about the importance of children’s well-being; society is more concerned than ever before about our children’s mental health, their ability to withstand setbacks and to cope with disappointment. In an era when the ‘Tiger Mother’ vies with the ‘Helicopter Parent’ to give children a competitive edge or protect them from failure, schools are forced to pick a hazardous course through a landscape spiked with Public Exams, League Tables, Social Media, gender issues and calls for children’s lives to be protected from stresses that are often beyond our control. How can schools and teachers respond? At St Columba’s Prep, a commitment to know and love every boy is part of our DNA. Our distinctive ethos springs proudly from a spiritual well that inspires everything we do, with our inclusive community embracing staff and families of all faiths and none. That’s how we meet boys’ needs and kindle their ambitions. www.stcolumbascollege.org

elsted recently scored top in the Government league tables for A Level performance progress in Essex, making it among the top 5% across England, ahead of 95% of other independent and state schools (including grammar).
A Broad Holistic Approach The fact that the school works with a full range of pupil ability shows what a dynamic experience they offer their pupils. Far from an academic hothouse, it is Felsted’s holistic approach to education, the focus on pupil wellbeing and the superb range of opportunities available to balance academic studies, which provides the ideal environment for academic achievement to flourish. Pupils from the age of four to eighteen thrive in a school which cares for the individual and gives so many opportunities to excel both academically and in a wide range of activities. Away from the classroom, every child becomes a valuable member of sporting teams, involved in drama and music or many of the other clubs and activities available. The welcoming Boarding and Day Houses ensure that strong friendships are made, with an extensive cocurricular programme to ensure your child is happy and stimulated.
A Variety of Modern Boarding Options London parents are seeing the benefits of their children flexi, weekly or full boarding on a stunning countryside campus, just one hour out of the city. Giving their children the opportunity to experience a modern boarding education allows them the time to take advantage of the huge range of co-curricular opportunities available. Without the daily commute, children are able to spend more time doing the things they love, being with their friends and completing homework in a supportive and nurturing environment. 64 FEBRUARY 2019

rospective parents often ask us for a definition of the St Hilda’s USP. This is summed up in our banner slogan ‘Nurturing the individual’ and is quantified in our daily aim to ensure that our pupils can access as broad a range of learning experiences as possible. Developing resilience for our fastchanging world is achieved within a safe, caring and family atmosphere where the needs of each and every child are attended to. St Hilda’s has been part of the Harpenden community for over 125 years and our pupils receive a first-class education. In a world where relentless pressure can cause huge anxiety for the rising generation of our society, our mission at St Hilda’s is to ensure that our pupils can develop self-confidence and self-worth as paramount aims. This is summed up by these spontaneous comments of appreciation from parents whose children are at the beginning, middle and end of their St Hilda’s careers: ‘If the pursuit of happiness is a life ideal, one only has to witness the arrival of the children each morning to see that you have achieved that so brilliantly. You have opened the door to the world of education and have shown your pupils what an amazing and exciting place that can be.’ ‘Over the period that we have been at St. Hilda’s, your amazing staff have encouraged and inspired

our child to become a confident spirited individual once more. I cannot thank you enough.’ ‘It goes without saying that the years have flown by but, in child-aged time, each day and week has had an impact and we are so grateful for all the positive influences our child has experienced at St Hilda’s.’ Our Early Years Department provides a fabulous learning environment and a terrific grounding, building confidence and inspiring our pupils to develop a ‘can do’ attitude whilst giving them an academically stimulating experience that links seamlessly into the rest of the School. At the other end of their St Hilda’s journey, our girls advance to Senior School well prepared for the next stage of their education and life beyond. We certainly believe that our all-round learning experience equips our pupils with the passport to their next destination. Whether pursuing academic excellence that enables your child to gain their first choice of secondary school, encouraging blossoming creativity inside and outside through the creative arts, aiming for your zenith in sporting endeavour or increasing your confidence amongst a caring, family atmosphere, St Hilda’s has something for everyone. The Mathnasium Method can achieve better results than one-on-one tuition Maths seems to induce more stress than any other subject, leading to anxiety which can have a huge impact on a child’s overall learning. Little surprise then that when looking to support their child’s learning - perhaps leading up to a school entry exam or the 11-plus - many parents opt for a private tutor. However, experts agree that small group tuition, with children working alongside their peers, often works better than one-to-one tuition.
They begin to look forward to coming each week. Seeing children of different ages and different abilities sat with them helps remove any stigma.
Ensures students fully understand concepts
If you’re thinking of supporting your child’s learning, here’s six reasons to consider choosing Mathnasium…
It may better suit your child’s needs Students need extra help because the regular education system is not meeting their needs, but many private tutors are either current or exteachers, which usually means they will approach tuition from the same baseline that schools do. In other words, by doing more of what has already been proven not to work for that particular child. Conversely, the Mathnasium Method is all about assessing each child individually and finding the best way to make maths make sense to them – by plugging the gaps with alternative approaches to the school system.
With one-to-one tutoring, the tutor tends to do much of the work; explaining a concept, giving an example, and then showing the child how to work out the problem. As a result, some students develop ‘learned helplessness’; wherein they can perform well when their tutor is with them but significantly worse when alone. At Mathnasium, students are typically grouped four to an instructor, so that they receive enough attention to have a problem explained but can then work on similar problems by themselves (albeit under close supervision) and process new concepts without the pressure of constant one to one tutor involvement. Students are also taught how rules work so that they fully understand, not just memorise, them. Parents receive detailed monthly reports of progress (often more frequently), highlighting when concepts have been ‘mastered’.
Embraces flexible learning
With one-to-one tutors the work is generally done at set times and on predetermined subject matter. At Mathnasium, learning is more flexible. You can drop in, unscheduled, several times per week and work on a bespoke learning plan, so that children are learning more than they would in just a few hours of allocated school time.
“At Mathnasium, students are typically grouped four to an instructor, so that they receive enough attention”
Gives you increased peace of mind
Some private tutors are, of course, excellent but finding the right one for your child can prove difficult. At Mathnasium we use a variety of tutors from different backgrounds, therefore increasing the likelihood of students finding someone they gel with. In addition, as tuition is being delivered by hand-picked, extensively trained and DBS checked professionals in a heavily managed environment, we also offer improved safety and security.
Equates maths with fun
Some children can feel ‘singled out’ if they need extra tuition because in their eyes they are ‘failing’. However, at Mathnasium, children quickly make friends with others in their group and realise that they are not alone in needing a bit of extra help. 68 FEBRUARY 2019
Works in line with school At Mathnasium, students take a unique customised assessment which pinpoints their individual learning needs. The customised learning plan to close any gaps is then shared with your child’s school maths teacher for continuity. This doesn’t always happen with a private tutor. Mathnasium has centres in Amersham, Radlett, Chiswick, Crouch End and Clapham for further information about your local centre please contact 0161 791 0686 www.mathnasium.co.uk

Opening the door to
your child’s future A
A guide to School Open Days
s we approach the new term, it is now when thoughts turn to Independent School Open Days - allowing you to get a genuine feel for the school and whether on first impressions it is right for your child.
TOP TIPS FOR GETTING THE MOST OUT OF A SCHOOL OPEN DAY… • Check on the school website if you need to make an appointment prior to visiting • It is vital that you are prepared so read their school brochures thoroughly • Take your child with you – their opinion is the most important. Children will get an idea whether they feel comfortable there. • Talk to as many people as you can: pupils, teachers and the headmaster ideally • Take an independent walk around with your child and chat about any reservations you might both have.
QUESTIONS TO ASK AT A SCHOOL OPEN DAY…. Some questions will differ according to your child’s age and whether you are visiting a day or boarding school. • How selective is the school academically and what is the current pass rate for the common entrance exam? • Are there high expectations and high academic achievements? • Is the curriculum broad and well balanced? (you want your child to be successful but not too compelled in pressure) • What are the classroom sizes? • What is expected of my child with regard to homework? • Is there a healthy balance of fun and academia? • Is there a bullying policy? • What lunchtime meals are available? 72 FEBRUARY 2019
• What sports and music facilities are available? • What after school clubs and trips are available? • How many pupils branch out into further education? After the tour, you may have the opportunity to meet other parents and children on a more informal footing whereby the teachers and the head can answer queries over coffee and biscuits.
“Take your child with you – their opinion is the most important”
HAPPINESS, CONFIDENCE, SUCCESS T he start of school is a big step in a child’s life and also in that of its parents. There is much debate about when is the right age to start being taught, but here at Westbrook Hay we feel that it is obvious; it is when the child is ready. Children can come to us in the term in which they turn 3, some will come from nurseries, other straight from home, while some will choose to remain at the local nursery and join us in Reception, when full time school begins. In our purpose-built Lower School, children benefit from a secure setting, with its own playgrounds, and advantageous teacher: pupil ratios. The aim is to provide a gentle start to life here, building on children’s existing skills. After two years or so in our Nursery, children move to Reception and this is the stage at which we see most children make the break through to literacy and numeracy. One of the aspects that most appeals here is that the curriculum that underpins all the learning in the Nursery is delivered through children playing while they are learning. The subtlety involved requires skilled planning and delivery, but does mean that children largely remain blissfully unaware that they are being taught at this early stage. www.westbrookhay.co.uk

76 FEBRUARY 2019
Laser hair removal is suitable for all skin types and all genders. I’m sure you are wondering whether laser hair removal is painful? This is one of the main question’s patients ask me about the treatment process and the honest answer is, if you are used to the more traditional methods of hair removal, this will be more than comfortable. The sensation is similar to that of an elastic band “ping” on the skin, however with the use of cooling air the skin recovers within milliseconds, and of course some areas are slightly more sensitive than others, but in the scheme of things it’s a couple of seconds of sensation. The laser hair removal handpiece searches for pigment within the hair follicle and fires the energy down its entirety to reduce the cellular DNA matrix, leading to weaker, slower, lighter and finer growth. We have brought you the best Laser on the market of course, Cynosure Elite, with an Alex and a Yag, it’s capable of treating all skin types. The Riverbanks practitioners are all passionate about this treatment and the results which can be achieved; and welcome you all to come and have a complimentary consultation to discuss any questions and formulate a bespoke treatment plan for you. 30% off all laser hair courses…. HOW TO FIND YOUR STYLE UNIFORM
and is not afraid to flaunt it. It also simplifies our daily lives in a major way. Having a uniform (or several uniforms for different occasions) makes choosing our clothes and dressing up a lot easier. If you’re sure about your style, you have great essentials, and you shopped in a smart way so that everything works together, you can save sartorial time and effort every single day. Considering how many small and grand choices we have to make a day, strategically eliminating even one can be a lifesaver. It’s not a coincidence that entrepreneurs and leaders all over the world, from Barack Obama, Steve Jobs, Hillary Clinton, Karl Lagerfeld, or Carolina Herrera all adopted some kind of personal style uniform. Uniform style dressing is a big step towards a sustainably conscious, smart, financially savvy lifestyle. You’re less likely to make rash decisions, fall victim to impulse spending, or buy things that only look good on the hanger and do not work with your existing wardrobe at all.
My top tips for finding your style uniform Invest In Your Statement Pieces It makes sense to buy the best quality you can afford of pieces that are the building blocks of your wardrobe and are in heavy rotation. Work with versatile pieces as building blocks My blazers are almost always part of my uniform. They can be dressed up or down, depending on the circumstances. They work with almost everything in my wardrobe and are not particularly difficult to care for.
I
f the word “uniform” automatically brings back memories of knee-length plaid skirts, ill-fitted blazers, itchy materials, unflattering colours, and a restriction of style creativity and personal expression – please hold out. The uniform I’d like to talk about is definitely NOT that kind of uniform. Actually, it’s just the opposite. For me, a style uniform, aka a signature style is the epitome of chic and effortless personal style. It’s a strong daily statement that encapsulates my personality, lifestyle, personal style, functionality, and aesthetic. It’s basically your perfect everyday, go-to outfit made up of classic pieces you feel comfortable and chic in. A signature look is not (necessarily) about having to wear the same thing everyday or having 30 identical pieces, like Simon Cowell’s white T-shirts. Sure, you can choose that as well, if that’s what you want to do, but for me, personal style is not only about functionality, but creativity and versatility as well. In the endless cycle of fashion fads and seasonal trends, a signature look is like a breath of fresh air. It oozes confidence, individuality, and personality. It tells us that the wearer has a strong personal style

“It makes sense to buy the best quality you can afford of pieces that are the building blocks of your wardrobe and are in heavy rotation”
Find your colour palette by having your colours done Having your colours done helps you identify a colour palette that will narrow down your wardrobe. Work with that and build your signature uniform around that colour palette. Add something unexpected and accessorize The uniform isn’t boring, constricted, or antifashion – it’s the embracement of effortless, simple personal style. That doesn’t mean it has to be the same all the time. You can totally elevate your simple uniform into a statement outfit. You’re not restricted by rules or limits. Add something unexpected, when you feel like it. Play with textures, colours, contrasts, add statement pieces and accessories. Wear it with confidence For me, having a uniform is the highest level of style. It means the person is totally confident with his/her personal style and is not influenced by outside opinions or trends. As a personal stylist I can help you find your style uniform, contact me now for a consultation on nina@edits-styling.com. www.edits-styling.com

You put the boom boom into my heart… Y ou’re probably sick of hearing ‘eat well’ and ‘exercise more’ to reduce your risk of practically all health related illnesses. So, let’s talk about how easy it is to incorporate these into your daily routine without having to make huge lifestyle changes for National Heart Month this February. There are certain risk factors you can’t change when it comes to a healthy heart such as age, gender and family history, but what you can do is live a heart-healthy lifestyle and ensure you attend regular screenings if doctors determine you’re at risk. Don’t wait for a diagnosis to change your lifestyle – your heart plays too much of an important role in your everyday functionalities. Keep in mind that your heart NEVER stops. Here come the dreaded words… eat well. A few simple changes to your everyday routine can make a huge difference. With your morning tea or coffee, have one sugar instead of two, or even better don’t have any. Be careful with so-called ‘healthy’ processed snack foods. Snacks such as granola bars or dried fruit contain a surprisingly high amount of sugar. To avoid this, look out for ingredient labels that say ‘100% fruit’. Alternatives include a handful of nuts, hard-boiled egg or fresh fruit. The second dreaded phrase… ‘exercise more’.
80 FEBRUARY 2019
Some people are lucky enough to fall in love with exercise, for others it can seem more of a chore than anything else. However, it can be easier to incorporate into your routine more than you may think. Schedule exercise like any other appointment, even if it’s 15 minutes at a time. Park further away from work and walk the distance or go for a walk with your friends rather than a coffee. However, whatever form of exercise you take, build up slowly to prevent you overwhelming yourself which is likely to result in giving up. Finally, it’s important that you don’t ignore your stress levels. This is just as important as the exercise and eating well. Meditation or yoga may do the trick for you, or even listening to your favourite artist or reading a good book. Keep your heart healthy. Lifestyle changes are not easy, but baby steps are better than no steps at all. Go at your own pace and find pleasure in feeling healthier. T
readmill runners usually fall into two camps. There’s those that plug in an average speed and mindlessly jog for hours until they finally get tired, and there’s those that know that cranking up their inline (a handy feature on most treadmills) can save time, burn fat and pack on leg muscle. When it comes to getting the most out of indoor running, less is more, and experts agree that incorporating incline intervals into your run can help boost your fitness levels in a shorter amount of time. The incline button tilts the treadmill belt upwards, creating imaginary hills for the runner and giving you the same challenge you might get while on an uphill jog. “Running on an incline is an alternative way of adding intensity to a running workout, without adding speed,” says Melissa Weldon, head of training at boutique fitness concept Sweat It (sweatit.com). “It makes your cardiovascular system work harder, while also working the glutes and hamstrings more than flat running.” As the incline increases, the muscles are forced to work harder, because the body must produce more power to propel itself against gravity. The effort needed to push yourself forward works many different parts of your lower body, from your gluteals to your hamstrings, and even the trunk muscles. According to Ben Davie, a lead trainer at Digme Fitness (digmefitness.com), the nature of an incline will challenge your body in a new way compared
86 FEBRUARY 2019
to a flat run. “It’s a great way to overload training which, in time, can improve your running efficiency and technique,” he says. “Incline running can be lower impact, if performed right,” he adds. “It will also help to strengthen key areas for running, like the posterior chain. This can help you become a more efficient runner - running faster and for longer with less energy wasted.” Deciding how much of an incline to use depends on your level of conditioning and the results you’re seeking. If you’re new to the incline button, Davie says it’s wise to start at slow speeds to avoid injuries like shin splints or plantar fasciitis (or heel pain). Begin by dialling up the intensity during a brisk walk so you can get comfortable with the extra effort needed. “I’d recommend first-time runners alternate between power walks up a steep incline, for example 12-15%, and an incline jog (8/10/12kph) on an incline 6-8%,” says Weldon. “This way, you can build your confidence on the treadmills without the higher impact of speed.” The only catch is that running on an incline is much harder than sticking to the flat, but that extra effort is the key to a more speedy workout. Researchers at the University of Georgia found that uphill running activates 9% more muscle with each stride, compared with exercising at the same intensity on level ground. So although your workout might be a bit more gruelling, it means you can spend less time on the gym floor and more time enjoying that blissful postrun shower.

tough luxe style
As 2019 slowly moves towards a long awaited Spring, thoughts naturally gravitate towards home improvements and a fresh look for the upcoming season. A key trend for this year, and a style that’s already proving popular with Smithers of Stamford, is Woven Leather Furniture. Woven Leather Furniture is very much part of a new movement referred to as ‘Tough Luxe’, which is a style that’s forecast to grow massively over the coming year. Tough Luxe is a trend that carries a subtle industrial sense of strength and masculinity, yet the luxuriousness of space and minimalism. Woven Leather Furniture is the epitome of this definition. The genuine tan leather is expertly woven, smooth as butter and resides upon a mango wood frame. www.smithersofstamford.com

Productive Woodland Gardening T his concept has developed from looking at how nature works; this is one practise within the science of Permaculture. Permaculture www.permaculture. org.uk has developed many new approaches in horticulture, architecture, farming, sanitation and water management etc. Permaculture is effectively understanding how natural systems work and tweaking these approaches creating cyclical systems working with nature rather than against it. In the case of Woodland Gardening it creates many tiers of productivity. This can incorporate both native and non-native plants with an emphasis on the productive either of the fruit, leaves, roots or other uses such as dyes or medicinal. It’s surprising how many familiar plants are edible and flavoursome. Many woodland gardens can be created with the plant mix being determined by topography, aspect and soil conditions. The following are however some relatively productive examples -:
Bulb layer e.g. Allium ursinium productive once established the leaves are wonderful in salads and sandwiches and as the name implies have a mild to strong garlic flavour within a lovely crisp leaf. Herbaceous layer e.g. Montia sibirica (Pink Purslane)-: a short lived perennial useful in dense shade. Both the leaves and flowers can be eaten in salads or cooked like spinach Shrub Layer e.g. Redcurrents.Whitecurrents, and Blackcurrants, Gooseberries, Worcesterberry and Jostaberry-: flavoursome fruits 98 FEBRUARY 2019
Middle Shrub Layer Rosa rugosa (Ramanas Rose) tasty hips
Small trees Crataegus arnoldiana -: sweet and juicy fruits up to 20mm in diameter. The plant grows to 6 metres and about 4m wide and fruit ripens in September in southern Britian Toona sinensis (Chinese Mahogany/Cedar)-: fast growing, easily grown in most soils. Cultivated in China for its edible leaves and young shoots, which are rich in vitamin A. These are usually boiled and resemble onions in flavour, often sold in markets in China. www.kevinpressland.com

The UK’s Largest Selection of Classical Fine Furnishings in the Rural Oxfordshire Village of Nettlebed
B
rights of Nettlebed can trace its roots back to 1866 when the family opened its first antique and jewellery business. Over the next 150 years, the business remained within the family and a passion for classical fine furnishings was passed down through the generations. Today, father-and-son, Robert and Henry Stamp, own and run Brights of Nettlebed. Sharing their predecessor’s knowledge and enthusiasm, the family has created a company which promotes the best of classic British design, quality craftsmanship and manufacture. Using an expansive collection of photographic archives, Brights of Nettlebed designs and creates bespoke, commissioned pieces of furniture which are comparable only to the finest antiques. More than one thousand items are available to purchase, from sofas and complete dining sets to handwoven rugs, paintings, table-top accessories, lighting and much more. One fascinating piece from this collection is the ‘Victory Chair’. An eye-catching addition to any library, study or sitting room, the back of this mahogany armchair has been hand-carved to replicate a ship’s transom. This chair was made under license the Right Honourable The Earl Spencer of Althorp and features the Spencer family’s coat of arms, flanked by Victory wreaths on either side. The Victory Chair can be viewed at Brights of Nettlebed on the Kings Road, London or, alternatively, at the company’s showrooms which comprise more than 30 classically designed rooms and extensive garden areas set among the historic village of Nettlebed near Henley-on-Thames. This picturesque location is an ideal location for avid historians, walkers and sightseers. The focal

point of Nettlebed is the high street on which Brights’ showrooms are situated along with the village church and its tower which dates back to Norman times and many quaint, grade-2 listed houses. Among the many charmingly unspoilt sights to see in Nettlebed, visitors can see the clay pits which helped establish the village as one of the country’s most important pottery and brickmaking centres from the 14th century onwards, the walking paths along the ridgeway and Nettlebed Estates (still owned by the Fleming family of James Bond fame as they have been since 1903) and the Warburg Nature Reserve. With so much history attached to the village, it comes as no surprise that Nettlebed is brimming with local legend. Today, guests are encouraged to stay at The White Hart- conveniently located directly next door to Brights of Nettlebed. Still maintaining its warm, traditional atmosphere since it was first opened in the 14th-century, this classic country inn is the ideal accommodation for anyone visiting the Brights of Nettlebed showrooms. www.brightsofnettlebed.co.uk

alazzo, Original Style’s new large format tile range, features decorative patterns that have been designed and printed in the heart of Devon, England. Introducing six glamorous designs, all inspired by the grand palatial buildings of Italy, the patterns in this collection look as if they have been inlaid on classical Carrara marble, bringing a touch of luxury to any space. Designed in pale grey and crisp white, the tile in this collection have a neutral colour palette, so coordinate with most colour schemes.
Arabo Prisma
Piazze
The collection comprises the following designs: Arabo: Depicting a lantern shape pattern, Arabo represents grandeur and opulence; perfect for those who are looking to create spectacle. Cubo: As its name implies, Cubo is made up of a series of square and rectangular shapes. Geometric in style, the pattern has a three-dimensional feel whilst its marble base is classy and sophisticated. Filigrana: A ‘Fleur de Lis’ pattern features within the Filigrana tile with accompanying swirls for that added graceful touch. Pettina: Pettina radiates style and class. Resembling the design of the popular ‘scallop’ shape, Pettina is essential for those who wish to make a statement. Piazze: The interweaving diamond pattern within the design creates dimension and structure. Two different marble effects are cleverly combined to make a grand statement in any interior setting. Prisma: Whilst gazing at the Prisma tile, you’ll see an array of shapes from triangles and hexagons to stars and pyramids. When integrated, these simple shapes achieve a gorgeous finish for an optical sensation. To find your local Original Style retailer, please visit www.originalstyle.com/showrooms 104 FEBRUARY 2019
