eighbourhood gastropub The Silver Cup in Harpenden has earned another award to add to its growing list of accolades, making it onto The Good Food Guide’s list of Britain’s 100 Best Local Restaurants 2023. The prestigious Best Local Restaurant list celebrates the places that are the beating heart of communities around Britain. Using reader nominations as a driving force, The Good Food Guide team inspected a great number of restaurants in Central and East England to decide which ones deserved a place in the 100 Best Local Restaurants 2023. Some are old favourites, others are new to The Good Food Guide, all are brilliant places to eat. The Silver Cup is continuing to gather acclaim for its imaginative menus, standout flavours and its warm and welcoming atmosphere. Independently owned and led by Michael Singleton and chef Matthew Reeder, the pair took over in spring 2020 and transformed the 19th century pub into a contemporary dining space, with a regularly changing set menu and a well-balanced wine selection, stylish interior and newly refurbished outside terrace. Michael Singleton said: “We are thrilled to be on the list of 100 best local restaurants, especially as we were nominated by public vote and by those that love dining here. We have a fantastic

local following in Harpenden, where we feel there’s nothing quite like the dining experience we’re offering. Word is now spreading beyond Hertfordshire, with regular visitors from London who are keen to come and experience our highlypraised set menu, Sunday roasts and steak nights.” Head chef Matthew Reeder has worked in the kitchens of top restaurants like Auberge du Lac, The Typing Room, The Galvin Brothers and Anglo in Farringdon where he was head chef. His superb seven-course tasting menu (£70) changes regularly and showcases the best seasonal ingredients. Current dishes include: Scallop, Sea Bass, Ponzu & Avocado; Cornish Sean Bream, Courgette, Octopus & Piccolo; Herdwick Lamb, Tenderstem, Anchovy & Mint; Jam, Toast & Earl Grey. Matthew is a fan of nose-to-tail cooking, buying whole animals and butchering them in-house, using local produce sourced from UK farms and estates. Fish and seafood is sourced as sustainably as possible, including hand-dived or picked scallops and oysters. CLASSIC IBIZA AIMS TO RAISE EVEN MORE FUNDS FOR HERTS YOUNG HOMELESS C lassic Ibiza returns to the grounds of Hatfield House on Saturday 17 August, promising over five hours of Balearicinfused dance music headlined by the 32-piece Urban Soul Orchestra (USO). The familyfriendly concert has announced it will once again be partnering with Herts Young Homeless (hyh) to help raise funds for the outstanding work it does. hyh supports young people in Hertfordshire without permanent, stable or suitable accommodation. Based in Hatfield, hyh provides a variety of free services to 16–24 year olds who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. hyh’s Nicola MacKinnon says, “Classic Ibiza is such an incredible thing to be part of and thanks to the huge generosity of the crowd, we raised over £2,300 to support young people at risk of homelessness. We can’t wait to see you all in the summer.” Classic Ibiza raised a total of £21,000 for charity from last summer’s tour and aims to raise even more funds in 2024. Classic Ibiza’s Lisa Ward explains, “This year we’re giving people the option
16 FEBRUARY 2024
of donating to hyh when they purchase tickets from our website. Helping concertgoers to keep costs down is important to us, so we don’t charge for parking and allow everyone to bring their own food and drink to our shows. If people can donate a fraction of these savings, I’m confident we can surpass last year’s total.” There will also be various fundraising initiatives taking place on the evening, including a £2.50 donation from every programme sold. Classic Ibiza starts at 5pm with a vibe straight from one of Ibiza’s iconic beachside bars, before building to a magical alfresco nightclub by the time the concert finishes at 10.30pm. Headlining the event is USO, known for their work alongside dance music greats like Groove Armada and Robert Miles. They’ll be delving into house music’s rich catalogue with DJ Goldierocks, reinventing the most iconic tracks from the last 30 years. Along the way, highlights include a DJ set by former Pacha Ibiza resident Jose Luis and an aweinspiring laser show. Visit classicibiza.co.uk for tickets and more information.

the aisle, the list of tough conversations with close family members can be endless when it comes to weddings. Before you start planning, you need to know where you stand. So bite the bullet and bring it up, this will enable you to make better decisions for you and your partner from the outset and ease any stress caused by the build-up. Images: katieoneillphotography.co.uk / @contentwithkatie
Be realistic about what you can handle. There aren’t many people who can plan a wedding alone, on top of upkeeping their day to day lives, jobs, children etc. Most people will need help in some form, whether it’s from a professional, or family & friends. Before diving in, ask yourself: Do I have the energy and do I have the time? If the answer is no, seek help. At very least, lean on your suppliers wisdom, they do this all the time. Don’t rush into planning mode. After your engagement, relax for a while. Once planning starts, it starts, so use at least the first few weeks to celebrate and chill with your new fiance. Anyone who peppers you with questions straight away (is nuts,) can wait. Have difficult conversations with family members early on. Whether it’s about financial contributions, kids not being invited or who you’d like to walk you down 20 FEBRUARY 2024

his season’s Prêt-à-Portea is a playful and stylish selection of couture cakes inspired by designers from Victoria Beckham to Nina Ricci. A firm favourite with fashionistas with a sweet tooth, Prêt-à-Portea gives a contemporary twist to afternoon tea with a collection of bold catwalkinspired creations. This season’s collection opens with a striking Versace gown, immortalised in vanilla mousse, Emmanuel sponge, a fig and plum compote, all topped off with a fashionable fruit tulle skirt. Harris Reed’s standout coat for Nina Ricci is crafted with Valrhona dark chocolate supreme and yuzu ganache, set on a citrus pain de gênes and finished with a chocolate statement collar. Paco Rabanne’s shimmering ensemble is a Mont Blanc cake with chestnut mousse and blackcurrant jelly, set on a light caramelised
chestnut sponge and topped with a glittering feather. Prada’s handbag of the season is a cinnamon blondie, glazed with silky white icing, and sandwiched with Ivoire chocolate. Victoria Beckham’s trophy jacket is an orange sablé, intricately piped with royal icing. Missoni’s legendary zigzag – this season showcased on a maxi coat – is depicted with mandarin mousse and almond praline, wrapped in Joconde sponge, and topped with chocolate zigzags. Finally, this season’s showstopping sharing cake is an Alexander McQueen gown, combining chocolate Gianduja cream, miso caramel and hazelnut sponge, finished with highshine shimmering glaçage and a chocolate frill. As always, our afternoon tea in Knightsbridge also includes contemporary canapés and sandwiches, with a selection of loose-leaf teas from our extensive collection.

Do I need a lasting power of attorney? Graham Hearnden, of Trust Matters Group in St Albans, warns about the dangers of not having lasting powers of attorney in place
A
s people are living longer, so too will there be an increase in the number of people expected to need to give a third party power over their affairs. Lasting powers of attorney (LPA) are legal documents that let you appoint one or more people —known as ‘attorneys’ — to help you make decisions or to make decisions on your behalf in the case of loss of mental or physical capacity. This must be set up before
that occurs, as once you’ve lost capacity it’s too late and only a deputyship is possible. It can take months to apply for deputyship once someone is unable to look after their own affairs, and the fees to apply can be costly. These can include solicitor fees to apply for deputyship, an assessment from a GP and fees to apply to the Court of Protection (£371). If the court decides your case needs a hearing, a further £494 is payable. In
some cases, you must also pay to set up a bond to insure against misuse of funds, which must be paid for annually. There’s also an annual ‘supervision fee’ to the Office of the Public Guardian (£320 per annum and, in the first year, an extra £100 assessment fee). The person authorised by the Court of Protection to handle your affairs on your behalf is not only unlikely to be who you would have chosen, but may even be a court official — who can charge every time they act for you. By contrast, once an LPA has been granted, it doesn’t need to be renewed. The LPA rules, introduced in 2007, have enhanced the protection offered and ensure people are of sound mind when they set it up. Those with dementia are particularly vulnerable to the theft or illegal use of their property, money or other valuables. Those without an LPA are powerless to
“There are two types of lasting power of attorney: property and financial affairs; and health and welfare”
intervene. The delay involved in obtaining deputyship could also cause serious harm as finances are left inaccessible for several months. It’s also not a solution for those needing help in managing their affairs to give PINs as this could jeopardise the parents’ ability to recover losses if the account is hacked with no LPA in place. There are two types of lasting power of attorney: property and financial affairs; and health and welfare. It’s important to note that existing enduring powers of attorney are still valid, but they only cover property and financial affairs. Trust Matters is able to deal with all the legal requirements surrounding the drafting of an LPA, including preparing your documents, liaising with the Office of the Public Guardian and registering your documents.

ST. FRANCIS’ COLLEGE
S
t. Francis’ College in Letchworth Garden City is an all-through day and boarding school and nursery for children from 3 months to 18 years. As one of the top all-girls’ independent schools in the area, St. Francis’ prides itself on building intellectually creative minds through rigorous and supportive teaching, with a focus on close individual care. At St. Francis’ there is a belief that, given the right stimulus, environment, focus and support, and with effort and commitment, our students can be anything they want to be. The education and encouragement they receive unlocks the potential within them, enabling them to embrace their own dreams and ambitions and thrive in all aspects of their lives Academic achievements are outstanding and the school has a solid tradition of academic rigour. Students go on to their choice of university each year, with between 10% and 20% attending Oxford and Cambridge. When it comes to the Early Years, the school recognises the importance of nurturing a child’s love of learning. This stage is a critical period for a child’s growth and development, as they naturally seek to learn about the world through hands-on experience. The Nursery and Prep Departments are safe and welcoming learning environments, designed to ignite curiosity and cater to the individualised needs of each child. However, academic success should be balanced with personal success in everything the children

do. In today’s fast-paced and challenging world without high levels of wellbeing and resilience, pupils are unable to function well, build strong, positive relationships or get the most out of their education. This is why, threaded throughout the curriculum, St. Francis’ focuses on instilling, from a young age, the core values of determination, resilience, empowerment, appreciation, motivation, and security (DREAMS), and on creating an environment where they are encouraged to have a go, make mistakes, and try again. By embracing DREAMS, the students at the College are empowered to navigate challenges, cultivate determination, and find intrinsic motivation, meaning they are equipped to turn their dreams into reality.

DO YOU WORK IN EDUCATION?
Could you use some of your skills to become a foster carer?
H
ertfordshire County Council urgently needs people to become foster carers. There are currently 1,000 children in care in Hertfordshire, many of whom are looking for a loving and supportive home. Teaching staff already have some of the essential skills and experience to be fantastic foster carers, and Hertfordshire County Council is calling on more people working in education to come forward. There is a particular need to find people to foster teenagers and sibling groups. Helen and Dave, who foster teenagers, still keep in touch with those who have moved on to independence. Helen said: “It’s a completely new way of life, having a house full of lovely young people who keep us young! We are a fostering family; our children have embraced fostering too, and they’ve been amazing.” More than half of children in care in Hertfordshire belong to sibling groups and of those, 54% live in different homes. While some are separated for personal reasons, for many it is because there are not enough carers with the space or time to foster siblings. Foster carer Nicole speaks about her experience of fostering two sisters. She said: “At my foster carer training, I heard a care leaver say they couldn’t find a foster carer that had enough space for her to stay with her siblings, and that just

completely broke my heart. “From that moment on, I decided I wanted to really concentrate on fostering siblings. I just wanted to give a family of children an opportunity to stay together and grow together and to have those shared memories.” Hertfordshire County Council foster carers receive training and support every step of the way. They also receive generous pay and allowances (which were increased last year). The extra payments take a foster carer’s average weekly pay to £502.30 per week. (based on caring for a child aged 11-15 and including skills and child allowance). If you are aged over 21, and have a spare room, please contact us to find out more. Fostering is flexible and there are lots of different types of fostering to suit your needs.
TEACHING TO 25 AT STAHS A
t STAHS we are always thinking beyond; that’s why everything we do is geared towards preparing our pupils not just for their next steps, but for achieving their long-term goals. We call this our Teach to 25 philosophy. Our vision is that each child is supported to become a happy, resilient young person who embraces life’s challenges and opportunities. STAHS students not only achieve excellent academic outcomes, but more importantly are prepared to live lives of consequence and make a meaningful impact on the world. From our Character Education programme, which starts in Reception, to our super-curriculum that stretches pupils beyond the limits of exam specifications, to our formal two-year leadership programme for Sixth Formers, Teach to 25 runs through every aspect of a STAHS education. STAHS pupils gain the skills, independence and knowledge needed to navigate their path in the
critical early years of adult life. We are very proud to be consistently ranked amongst the best independent schools in the UK. We have sky-high expectations for and of our pupils and our world-class teaching and rich curriculum help them achieve their ambitions. In and outside the classroom, our pupils are encouraged to and rewarded for giving their best, whatever their passions and aspirations. Yes, our academic results are outstanding: 46% of A level students achieved all A* or A grades in 2023. But the range of courses, universities and other higher education options that our Year 13 leavers embark upon is as varied and individual as they are, and this time includes Central St Martins, two US universities and an accountancy apprenticeship, as well as Russell Group universities and Oxbridge. Rather than following the crowd, they blaze their own trails, and we could not be prouder of them. stahs.org.uk

LEANING INTO CONVERSATIONS By Lara Pechard, Head at St Margaret’s School in Hertfordshire
ABOUT ST MARGARET’S SCHOOL
T
he pace and online immediacy of modern life is impacting physical conversation. At home, parents are trying hard to make room for healthy discourse within the family and sometimes as adults, it can be challenging to manage our own phone habits at the dinner table, let alone those of our young people. As schools, we have a duty to support parents in this ongoing plight. In recent years I have encountered parents who simply cannot lever their child to the dinner table let alone talk to them there. For schools, helping parents to develop improved conversations with their children can be problematic. Namely, because the biggest struggle is reversing some of the adult behaviours around phone and device usage. Encouraging parents to redress the balance and to make changes that are reflective of the behaviours they wish to see from their children, really helps. Likewise, establishing boundaries matters. Perhaps that means everyone comes to the table to eat and that phones are not permitted at this time? Or it might be the case that the whole family goes to a place of worship together or has tea with a grandparent. Creating shared time or specific experiences will naturally facilitate more conversation. Just as during the school day, if we don’t introduce ‘protected time’ at home, there is far less chance for conversation to flow.
52 FEBRUARY 2024
Routine can also encourage conversation. Children will often find familiar situations more comfortable, and it is perhaps during these moments that they are more likely to open up about their day. Try using regular car journeys or dog walks to talk to your child. Often, these occasions provide a platform to talk, but in a limited capacity. Modelling conversation by naming the difficulty is another useful way to encourage conversation. For example, families can use the rose bud retrospective: what is positive (the rose) and what is challenging (the thorn) and what is growing or exciting (the bud). Listening to our young people is key and thankfully, strong pastoral settings in school are providing parents with help on how to navigate this period not only to best encourage, but also to support their children longer term. stmargarets-school.org.uk

Hertford Barns Day Nursery

declared ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted
here was delight at Hertford Barns Day Nursery in Cole Green as proud parents and practitioners learnt that the setting had achieved Ofstedrated ‘Outstanding’ status, following their first inspection. An outcome achieved by only 14 percent of all English Early Years providers, the inspector praised the “exceptionally skilled” team for creating an environment where children feel “safe, secure and comfortable” and “develop a strong sense of belonging”, helping them to “persevere when they find tasks difficult” and “feel a sense of pride in their accomplishments”. In the report, the inspector observed that staff “give the highest priority to developing children’s communication and language skills” and help to “listen and enrich their experiences by introducing new vocabulary and repeating words”, the result of which “expands the language skills of all children, including those who are less verbal”. Partnerships with families were admired by the inspector, who observed that “parents are overwhelmingly complimentary about the nursery” and “speak very highly of the relationships that staff build with their children”, as well as being offered free training masterclasses and materials to “enhance children’s care and education”, alongside “frequent updates in a variety of ways to understand their child’s development and how to help them further”. The inspector also credited the team for “actively encouraging children to care about the natural world”, with the nursery using the countryside surroundings to their advantage with initiatives including growing herbs and vegetables and caring for lambs in the springtime. At Hertford Barns, children benefit from an award-winning eco-education, with Childbase Partnership last year being named as ‘Early Years Provider of the Year’ by Keep Britain Tidy for earning the prestigious Eco-Schools ‘Green Flag’ award in every single nursery setting, a recordbreaking sector first, which recognises exceptional environmental awareness and conservation efforts. From babies using recycled resources for sensory activities, to pre-schoolers creating bug hotels for insect observations, crafting using natural materials and carrying out litter picking sessions in their local surroundings, children of all ages take part

arum Hall School took part in the London Schools Gymnastics competition this month and the under 9’s proudly walked away achieving second place, having competed against many top London schools. Next year the team are aiming for first place with their teacher Miss Vettese saying “I’m so proud of the gymnastics team. They displayed exceptional poise and focus throughout this tough competition. Placing second will really motivate us to reach for first place next year.” The under 11’s narrowly missed out on third place too, an incredible effort, especially given that just 2 years ago Gymnastics wasn’t even a featured sport at the school. The School has placed great emphasis on sport in recent years. PE teacher Miss Vettese joined in 2022 and has since driven the sporting achievements of the school forward with great enthusiasm. Competitions and fixtures with other schools have more than trebled and the school have invested heavily in new equipment and resources for the PE department. Highlights this year will see Miss Vettese take a group of netballers of all abilities to a special

And this summer the whole school can look forward to their first ever full day swimming gala. Miss Vettese continues, “An appreciation of sport is a gift that I hope to give all of our pupils. Sport is so important for young people and has been undervalued for many years. My aim is to give pupils of all abilities a love and appreciation of sport from a young age. I am proud of the sporting accolades that we are starting to achieve and I can’t wait to see us continue to compete across a range of disciplines.” Miss Karen Coles, Headmistress at Sarum Hall School, says: “While we strive to be the very best in sport that we can be, sport is about more than just winning. The life lessons that sport can teach our children go far beyond the physical benefits. Sport helps to develop character and to learn important skills such as respect, problem solving, resilience, perseverance, confidence and collaboration. The benefits are endless and it is wonderful to see our children achieve so much in such a short time.”

The study, by the Sutton Trust education charity, shows that virtually every key profession is dominated by privately educated pupils grabbing the senior management/director positions
T
heir grip on power is most noticeable in the judiciary, where 74 per cent of leading judges (those in the High Court or Court of Appeal) were privately educated. Figures in the report also show that one in three MPs (32 per cent) was privately educated – as were half the members of the Conservative Cabinet. Even in Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Cabinet, 13 per cent of members went to private school. Nationally, the figure is just 7 per cent. The report, carried out by Dr Philip Kirby, goes on to show that 71 per cent of senior Army officers – two-star generals and above – went to private schools. Only 12 per cent attended comprehensives.

“The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools”
In medicine, 61 per cent of doctors were privately educated while 22 per cent went to selective state grammar schools and just 16 per cent to comprehensives. The list goes on – 48 per cent of civil servants were educated privately, 29 per cent went to selective grammar schools and 23 per cent to comprehensives. The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools. And of those chief executives of FTSE 100 companies who were educated in the UK, 34 per cent were privately educated. Nearly half the top actors – 42 per cent of Bafta Award winners – went to private schools, fuelling criticism that the profession is becoming more elitist. “Our research shows that your chances of reaching the top in so many areas of British life are so much better if you went to an independent school,” said Sir Peter Lampl, the chairman of the Sutton Trust. “As well as academic achievement, an independent education tends to develop the essential skills such as confidence, articulacy and teamwork, which are vital to career success.

Kate Moss’s wellbeing secrets as she turns Supermodel and all-round British national treasure, Kate Moss, recently celebrated her 50th birthday. By Yolanthe Fawehinmi
“I
’m not turning 50,” Moss, who rose to fame in the Nineties, said in a recent interview with the Sunday Times. “No. I’m not thinking about it. I do not feel 50.” It’s hard to belive she’s marking such a milestone, but the Croydon-born, mum-of-one has swapped catwalks and London parties for a more holistic life in Oxfordshire. So how does she look after herself ? Here are her wellbeing secrets through the years. Morning tea and meditation “I don’t look back. I’ve reflected a lot on the past but now I like to be present, live in the now. I’m being present in the moment, seeing things, being mindful,” she says on her skincare and wellness website Cosmoss, where she also sells her infamous Dawn Tea, her drink of choice for first thing in a morning. The tea includes hibiscus flowers, crushed bay leaves and ginger roots, designed to help energise the body, strengthen skin, hair and nails and maintain immunity. “I find taking these few moments to myself really helps me prepare for my day,” she told Porter Magazine.

Though it took her some time to find the type of meditation that works best, she now practices transcendental meditation for 10-15 minutes, where she repeats a personalised mantra. She has said that it helps to build the discipline to stop and be “in herself ”. Wild swimming It seems Moss, who has been the face of Calvin Klein and Chanel, has taken her bucolic lifestyle to another level. Since moving to Little Faringdon in West Oxfordshire, where she is surrounded by outdoor space, she has taken up wild swimming and growing her own vegetables. Moss goes wild swimming “in a secret place, in the middle of lots of fields and only the villagers are allowed to use it”, according to the Sunday Times, which has many surprising health benefits, such as improving blood pressure and fat levels in the blood. fashion’s former wild child has learned plenty from the best MUAs in the industry. Moss says it was Charlotte Tilbury who taught her about manifesting and affirming herself. “If you believe enough, the universe will deliver,” Moss said in an interview for Harper’s Bazaar. The wellness entrepreneur also created Love Letters for Cosmoss – a set of 150 daily affirmation cards curated by Moss and contributors from fashion, philosophy and the arts – in order to support, share and inspire.
“If you believe enough, the universe will deliver,” Moss said in an interview for Harper’s Bazaar
Crystal charging Moss, who has appeared on the cover of British Vogue over 40 times, also keeps healing crystals, which she charges under the moonlight. “I put all my crystals on a tray and put them outside in the garden,” the model said during her Sunday Times interview. “Just cleansing the crystals, charging the crystals.” Her favourites include rose quartz, which represents compassion and love, and melonite, which is meant to channel protective and grounding properties.

STAY FIT, NOT INJURED
A
s soon as the new year starts, we make a resolution to exercise more by going to the gym or taking up a sport, but this can come at a cost of injury if you do not plan it properly especially if you haven’t worked out for a long time. So how do you prevent injury and enjoy your workouts? Marco Martino a Personal Trainer, based at the Bushey Grove Leisure Centre says that the number one thing that people fail to do is to “take the time to warm up and stretch before they train, many people dismiss the necessity of warming up, but it is essential part of the workout”. Similarly, Katharine Evans of Better Body Sports Rehabilitation also based at Bushey Grove Leisure Centre says that “one of the problems with people who haven’t trained for a while is that when they do get back in the gym they go straight to the weights they used to lift, but you need to progress slowly, little by little increasing the weight and the reps over a period of time. Don’t just go straight to the weights you used to lift”. “Staying hydrated and eating well” is the advice from Sally Taylor, an independent personal trainer 74 FEBRUARY 2024
“After exercise use Taylor’s CBD balm, cream or oil, massage into those areas that ache especially the lower back, shoulders and knees”
based in Bushey. Drinking water little and often during exercise as dehydration can cause muscle cramps, fatigue and reduced endurance, which can contribute to injury. Performance will also be enhanced by eating the right food with the right types of nutrients. Quick and easy wins are to wear good footwear and clothing that supports the feet and the body, allowing you to move freely. After exercise use Taylor’s CBD balm, cream or oil, massage into those areas that ache especially the lower back, shoulders and knees. CBD is a natural alternative to painkillers you can use it as and when required. Available online, Taylor’s products have 1000mg of CBD to ensure maximum effect, within 15 minutes you should feel better. Finally, injury is less likely if you commit to your fitness goals and get into a routine, being consistent is the best way. HOW TO WEAR THE PANTONE COLOUR OF THE YEAR 2024
P
The trend forecaster predicts this peachy hue will be popular next year. By Katie Wright
antone has announced its Colour of the Year 2024 is Peach Fuzz. The trend forecasting company said the pastel shade was chosen because it highlights “our desire for togetherness with others and the feelings this creates”. Reminiscent of peach skin, shade 12-1023 is said to be “a gift to the senses, creating a symbiotic relationship between our sense of taste, sight, touch, and scent”. The faded coral tone is much paler than last year’s Viva Magenta and 2022’s Very Peri (a periwinkle blue). “Peach Fuzz presents a fresh approach to a new softness,” said a statement unveiling the shade on Instagram. The “subtly sensual” colour is “a heartfelt peach hue bringing a feeling of tenderness and communicating a message of caring and sharing,

community and collaboration.” The cool-toned hue is similar to that of the Gucci gown worn by actor Jenna Ortega on the 2023 Golden Globes red carpet. It also harks back to the peaches and cream make-up trend as seen on the likes of Margot Robbie (who, let’s not forget, almost singlehandedly ushered in the ubiquitous Barbie Pink trend), Hailey Bieber and Natalie Portman. Launched in 1999, every year a panel of experts at the Pantone Colour Institute analyse global trends in entertainment, art, travel, fashion and technology. Together, they select a colour that they think represents the current zeitgeist and will resonate with people around the world in the coming year. Wondering whether you should start stocking up on Peach Fuzz fashion buys in preparation for 2024?
“They select a colour that they think represents the current zeitgeist and will resonate with people around the world in the coming year”
“Peach Fuzz will bring a refreshing and gentle sophistication to your wardrobe,” says Cliff Bashforth, managing director of Colour Me Beautiful Europe. Compared to the last two shades it’s a “subtler and more refined shade, rendering it a versatile choice” in terms of clothing and accessories. “One of Peach Fuzz’s strengths lies in its gender-neutral appeal,” Bashforth continues. “As the fashion industry progresses towards greater inclusivity and the dismantling of gender stereotypes, this colour emerges as a symbol of transcending traditional boundaries, appealing to a diverse spectrum of individuals.” From floaty summer dresses and cosy knits to suits and sportswear, peach pieces can work whatever the season. Experiment with different fabric textures and prints, Bashforth suggests: “The incorporation of Peach Fuzz into patterns, such as floral prints or geometric designs, can add depth and interest to garments.” And remember you don’t have to wear it head to toe: “Maybe shoes, sandals, a handbag or even a belt can elevate your look and bring you bang up to date without spending a fortune.” Worried that you might look ‘washed out’ by this pale peach? Bashforth says that people with dark hair and eyes (no matter what their skin tone) may want to team it with other colours. “You’ll need to balance your contrasting appearance by wearing Peach Fuzz with darker neutrals such as charcoal or burgundy,” he says. “Should you wish to make an entrance and turn heads, team it with purple.” On the other hand, it’s good news for blondes (from mousey to platinum) with porcelain to olive skin: “This is the perfect shade for you – team it with taupe, cocoa or pewter for an elegant tonal look, or sage green if you want to be enviably
fashionable this coming season.” Want to jump on the Colour of the Year bandwagon right away? Ethical footwear brand Cariuma has collaborated with Pantone on a range of Peach Fuzz trainers. Available in four styles, the minimalist sneakers are made with sustainably sourced materials including natural rubber, organic cotton canvas and recycled plastic. FEBRUARY 2024 79

2024 TREND
BROWN BATHROOMS
T
here are moments when we find we’re getting asked, a lot, for a certain style or tile or a particular look. Most recently it was terrazzo (ideally timed as we just launched a new terrazzo collection – the very dreamy, Rialto terrazzo tiles) but right now, it’s all about brown bathrooms. The Ca’ Pietra community is going crazy for them in all their warmth and woody glory, so if you want a slice of the chocolate-y bathroom pie, our Head of Creative, Grazzie Wilson gives you five of the ways to cut into the trend.
SOFTLY DOES IT WITH TAUPE AND BEIGE Like every colour, brown is a sliding scale. From the 80% cocoa depths of walnut brown to the mellow neutrals of taupe, beige and putty. If you’re into lighter tones then create yourself a brown bathroom that blends the lot – all eyes on this Enki limestone bathroom as a lesson in how it’s done. Using the large format rectangle with ribbons of brown 100 FEBRUARY 2024

our Beach Hut tiles up your walls as well as the floor to really encase the bathroom in the warmth that shades of brown bring. What’s great about wood effect tiles is that you can add in a touch of black (in the form of brassware or your shower screen) and you’ll soon see that wooden walls can give rise to a moody, industrial look just as impressively.
BROWN, BUT MAKE IT PRETTY Love the idea of a brown bathroom but wondering if it will feel too earthy in situ? There are plenty of ways to style a brown bathroom to soften things and to prettify the space but one of the best ways is to choose a brown tile that adds immediate softness thanks to its shape. Take a look at our Marlborough terracotta bathroom tiles, in particular in our room-softening Arabesque shape. You can also look at our Kashmir collection for inspiration on how to add brown in a “softly does it” kind of way too.

tones on the floor and then adding visual texture with the herringbone version in the shower enclosure, you’ve immediately got a soft brown setting with whispers of deeper brown in the mix. Layer in a few accent pieces, like this tan leather chair, a woven jute bathroom rug, a terracotta brown pot or two, and a statement washstand (we went for black marble but a brown marble or timber version would’ve allowed for yet more brown if you fancied) and you have yourself a through-andthrough brown bathroom to swoon over.
WAYS WITH WOOD Proof that wood isn’t just a material but a colour too, wooden-style tiles pave the wave to a bathroom that’s at one with nature. Starting with the floor, a wood effect bathroom floor can feel comforting and charming in a period property or style it differently and place it in a modern setting and you can create a blonde wood Scandi bathroom that transports you to Stockholm with every shower. Or use wood effect porcelain, like 102 FEBRUARY 2024
“Wooden-style tiles pave the wave to a bathroom that’s at one with nature”
A tile formation that is a forever trend, parquet walls and parquet tiled floors are always a winner. Some of our favourite brown bathrooms of all feature brown parquet tiles whether it’s the speckled finish of our Pottery tiles that give rise to a multi-tonal brown palette on bathroom walls, the rich terracotta brown tones of our Marlborough terracotta on a bathroom floor, or have fun with our Petite collection.. The finishing touch? Cosy, underfloor heating, a burnishing copper bathtub (they’re sort of brown after all) and a cocooning brown paint for walls and your dream brown bathroom is complete.
BROWN SCHEMES PACKED WITH PERSONALITY Brown tiles add character and charm to any bathroom, whether you’re decorating a tiny downstairs loo or have a whopping family bathroom. But, when it comes to brown, it doesn’t have to mean playing it safe. In fact, we think this colour scheme works just as well when you pack it with personality as it does when you colour drench the room in the same tile. Enter our Rialto terrazzo tiles in Santa Croce which we’ve teamed with a stripe design, adding heaps of personality into this bathroom. capietra.com

ood Bros was started in a Bethnal Green stable in the East End of London by a small team of furniture makers. Through the Roaring 20s, with its flappers, jazz, Charleston, the general strike, and the Wall Street Crash, with the boom and bust affecting everyone. During the war there had been many restrictions meaning only ‘utility’ furniture was allowed to be made. Wood Bros moved down the River Lea to the current factory in Marsh Lane, Ware and it was here that the founder HW Wood created the well known ‘Old Charm’ oak range of traditional cabinet furniture. Inspired by history and tradition Old Charm is still going today, blending heritage, design and fine craftsmanship. Some of these current classic designs have remained unchanged from the originals of 50 years ago. During this time, Wood Bros won the Queen’s Award for Exporting, furnishing the most prestigious national project of the 1960’s, the ocean going transatlantic liner, the Queen Elizabeth II and many other Cunard liners. Wood Bros was also responsible for making its own version of the Great Bed of Ware as well as an enormous replica of King Arthur’s round table! Wood Bros is still an active participant of the local community and is currently involved with higher education environmental projects with the University of Hertfordshire and Harris Tweed as well as collaborating with the National Trust. Wood Bros continues to be a thriving family run business today. 106 FEBRUARY 2024

Afternoon Tea Collection by Victoria Eggs
P
erfect for Mother’s Day, the Wildlife in Spring and Afternoon Tea collections from award-winning British designer Victoria Eggs make for thoughtful gifts. The delicately illustrated Wildlife in Spring collection highlights a nostalgic and hopeful view of this blossoming time of year. With the promise of new beginnings, the hedgerows are bursting with life, filled with birdsong and sweetly scented flowers attracting bees, butterflies and insects alike. A blackbird, sparrow and wren, some of Britain’s most well-known birds, can be found surrounded by budding blossoms, beautiful roses and elegant magnolia. Born from Victoria’s desire to create a timeless floral design inspired by childhood memories of exploring hedgerows around the UK on family holidays and being taught by her young daughter to stop and smell the roses. Wildlife in Spring offers a relaxed view through lush foliage and gives dreamers a space to breathe and enjoy well deserved peace and quiet.
112 FEBRUARY 2024
The collection includes two mugs, one with the word ‘mum’ inscribed on the inner rim, tea towel, apron, double oven glove, oven mitt, canvas bag, jugs, cosmetic bag, wash bag, notecards, cushion cover, pot grab, coaster, shortbread biscuits, and English breakfast tea. The decadent Afternoon Tea collection was inspired by Victoria’s love of this quintessentially British ritual. “There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea.” - Henry James As with Victoria’s other collections, all of the products are hand-crafted right here in the UK. The fine bone china ceramics are made of the finest Cornish clay, and the textiles are printed onto unbleached 100% cotton using plant dyes that are environmentally friendly. The collection includes a mug, tea cup and saucer, tea towel, bauble, apron, double oven glove, canvas bag, English breakfast tea, shortbread biscuits, and coasters. victoriaeggs.com
