The Gardens at
Knebworth House Perfect for a summer visit.
S
et in 250 acres of rolling Hertfordshire countryside, Knebworth House is one of England’s most colourful stately homes. It is remarkable for having been in the Lytton family for more than 500 years. Its romantic gothic exterior complete
flowers from the cutting garden are displayed throughout the House filling the rooms with colour and perfume. Martha Lytton Cobbold, Managing Director of Lytton Enterprises said, “It’s lovely to see visitors enjoying the Gardens. We have a wide variety of plants and roses in bloom as well as a number of wood carvings by local craftsmen throughout the Gardens. This year, the Garden exhibition will be by Knebworth Carvers who are based on the Estate. Pieces will be in place throughout July and August and there will be a programme of demonstrations when visitors will be able to see the carvers in action and perhaps buy a piece for their own garden. We also have some wonderful theatrical productions scheduled for this summer, including the Three Musketeers. Performances take place in the magical setting of the Sunken Lawn in front of the House. I’d advise visitors to book early as tickets usually sell out.” A visit to Knebworth Park makes a great family day out. Entrance to Knebworth Park and Gardens includes admission to the Adventure Playground and dinosaur trail which is great value. Knebworth House may also be visited for a small extra supplement. There is plenty of space for picnics in the Park and car parking is free of charge.
Entrance to Knebworth Park and Gardens includes admission to the Adventure Playground and dinosaur trail with turrets, domes and gargoyles conceals a much older Tudor red brick house. Knebworth achieved fame in Victorian times as the home of the novelist, playwright and politician Edward Bulwer Lytton author of the words “The pen is mightier than the sword”. There have been gardens at Knebworth House since at least the 17th Century, but the present layout dates largely from the Edwardian era. The architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, who married into the Lytton family, simplified the ornate beds and statuary of the Victorian garden with lawns and avenues of pollarded lime trees. Popular features of the 28 acres of formal gardens now include a maze, the walled kitchen garden, the Gertrude Jekyll Herb Garden and the Dinosaur Trail, where 72 life-sized dinosaurs can be found grazing amongst the trees. Exploring the woodland paths, children can discover a T-Rex, Woolly Mammoths and other fascinating prehistoric creatures. Knebworth is committed to ‘green’ sustainable gardening in a chemical free environment wherever it is possible. Vegetables and herbs are used by the Chef for the Garden Terrace Tea Room recipes. Surplus produce and posies of sweet peas from the Garden are often offered for sale in the Knebworth shop, where visitors can buy a range of plants and gifts to take home to enjoy. CLASSICS
ON THE COMMON
F
ew would disagree with the view of a Harpenden town councillor that Harpenden Common is ‘the jewel in the town’s crown.’ The vast tract of common grassland, sweeping you into the town centre as you approach from the south, is home to a golf club, a cricket club and the occasional fair and circus, yet still provides acres of recreational space for residents and visitors. But since 1994, for one day a year, this idyllic scene is interrupted for a few hours for what has become the biggest mid-week classic car show in Britain. Whatever the weather, nothing stops most of the pre-registered owners of more than 1200 classic vehicles, motorcycles and scooters from driving to Harpenden from all over the UK to display their cherished vehicles. And there’s never any shortage of admirers. Up to 10,000 spectators spend hours admiring the mouthwatering collection. A classic vehicle should be at least 20 years old but we usually have one or two from around a century ago, such as a 1900 Daimler Type A and a 1913 model T Ford. Every decade following is well represented, too, from Rolls Royces and Maseratis to Austin A40s and Morris Minors. We’ve even had a Sinclair C5. Classics on the Common was the brain-child of classic car enthusiast Peter Madden, a Harpenden resident and Metropolitan Police officer. The first year’s show attracted 125 cars. When Peter decided to make the 2008 Classics his last he asked Harpenden Village Rotary Club to take over responsibility for organising and running the show. Rotarians are no strangers to running events and, with more 40 members, we had a good deal of man- and woman-power on offer. On the day we are very grateful to have our numbers boosted by members of our associated club, Harpenden Village Inner Wheel, and St Albans & Harpenden Police Cadets. Other helpers include members of Harpenden Lions Club and Carpenters Arms Classic Car Club and volunteers from the principal charities supported by the show. At heart, Classics on the Common remains a community event. Its charity fundraising is significant, too: over the show’s 21-year life more than £110,000 has been distributed to local, children’s, national and international charities. Classic vehicle owners make a donation to enter and, although there is no entry charge to the public, spectators have always responded generously when approached with collecting buckets. Local businesses support, too, by taking banner advertising. In 2014 we raised a record £30,000. The main recipients were Community Meeting Point, Alzheimer’s Society (local branch), Youth Talk, Macmillan Cancer Support and Guildford Rotary Eye Project. The organisers, Harpenden Village Rotary Club, thank all who support the event so generously.

xclusive St Albans menswear store D. Copperfield triumphed at the recent St Albans Retailer of the Year awards night at Club Batchwood, picking up both the ‘Fashion and Accessories Retailer’ and overall ‘Retailer of the Year’ awards. For owner, Harrison Block, it was recognition for a journey which began back in 2003 when he joined the store as a junior sales assistant, working his way up through the business until he took ownership in 2013. As Harrison explains:“D. Copperfield was originally established back in 1973, and has long been a destination for the fashion-conscious man of Hertfordshire. With such a strong heritage, it was always going to be a challenge to take on the legacy of the brand - whilst at the same time moving it on to appeal to a new generation of customers.” The store has recently reopened following an extensive refurbishment of both the ground floor and an expansion into the basement, opening up a new, clean sartorial room; and the new aesthetic has already been well received by both existing and new customers. But what makes it an award-winner? “It’s all about the experience,” Harrison continues. “We’ve always been committed to offering the very highest level of customer service, as well as cutting-edge garments and a great mix of brands. Now we can also offer a fantastic store environment to really give our customers the complete shopping experience they’re looking for. Our aim is to become a beacon for men’s clothing, lifestyle and well-being in the area.” Approaching its forty-third year in business, the customer base is as loyal as ever, built on a combination of innovative items of clothing and a motivated, knowledgeable team of employees. Copperfield has always had a reputation as a pioneer for introducing brands and trends before they became well known, and continue to do so today. Over the years the store has also

won awards from respected fashion publications such as GQ, FHM and Drapers. In more recent years, it was recognised for its excellent contribution to menswear by the British Fashion Council and was selected as one of a select group of independent retailers to be invited to Buckingham Palace and subsequently awarded by the Queen. From formal attire to casual dress, Copperfield can enhance a gentleman’s aesthetic for day to day living as well as any special event. A healthy fusion of brands that include Paul Smith, Ralph Lauren, Stone Island, CP Company and YMC provides cutting edge garments for a forward thinking clientele. The personal, independent touch has always been the essence of how Copperfield like to operate. Copperfield is more than just a retailer; it is a cornerstone of the St Albans shopping district. It is also a destination for out of town shoppers looking for inspiration to update their wardrobe, which can only be positive for St Albans retail as a whole. Above:The team from D. Hertfordshire’s leading destination for buying art
Home and Away As many relish the opportunity to get away for a glorious summer break, Gallery Rouge places Europe’s leading painters in the spotlight with some stunning inspirational escapism.
H
oliday is a word that elicits a very special response from families, couples and solo travellers; the buzz (or chaos!) of packing, the first sip of chilled beer and the temporary retreat from daily challenges. Quality time with our loved ones is all too often too far down the list of priorities and time away can help invigorate us with a renewed appreciation for our familiar home surroundings upon return. Nothing beats the feeling of sinking into your own bed after a spell away and long after the tan fades and routine returns, with careful selection of furnishings and fine art it is possible to cultivate an environment which provides much needed escapism. Gallery Rouge is showcasing a selection of outstanding European painters who artfully distil the finest qualities of our chosen holiday destinations which may be enjoyed every day. A testament to
the school of thought that many aspire to create a home that we do not need to take a vacation from, the holiday feeling needn’t leave you when routine returns with the perfect choice of artwork.
Allan Morgan
With an increasing number of us choosing to holiday right here in the British countryside, it is no surprise that collectors are seeking painters whose brushes evoke the beauty of our homeland. Living in the beautiful bordering counties of Herefordshire and Powys, Allan Morgan has garnered a following for his vibrant and dramatic vistas. The basis for his works remains constant – the love of light, colour and atmosphere. With disappearing horizons, his works provide depth and warmth. Available for viewing at Gallery Rouge St. Albans, original paintings start at £550.

Villalba
Villalba beautifully pays homage to the impressionist works of Monet with a modern interpretation of the classical subject matter. Shimmering in hues of aquamarine and dusty pink, there is a lovely hazy romance to the compositions. Thousands flock annually to Giverny on excursion from the metropolis of Central Paris to take in the scents and enchantment of the water lily ponds which have inspired generation upon generation of artist. The original oil paintings of Villalba are now viewable at Gallery Rouge Harpenden, priced from £1,095.
Alfredo Navarro
Brand new to Gallery Rouge, this is one of Navarro’s first collections to be presented in the United Kingdom. Born on the eastern coast of Spain in the city of Alcoy (Alicante) in 1965, the artist was schooled at the Escuela Municipal de Bellas Artes before commencing his honours degree at esteemed institution Circulo de Bellas Artes, Madrid. Caught between realism and hyperrealism, the artist has long been committed to capturing the changing light and vast nature of the Mediterranean and Atlantic Ocean. Both captivating, dramatic and mesmerising, they have a power which reaches beyond the edge of the canvas. Now on display at Gallery Rouge Harpenden, original paintings start at £995
Mary Shaw
Antonio Iannicelli
A citizen of the historic hub of Naples, Iannicelli captures the brilliance of the idyllic Italian Riviera. Working exclusively in oils he looks for the unusual aspect and then paints it with expressive immediacy. His paintings have clarity but with a touch of impressionism and well reflect the mood, warmth and scenery of this scenic area and particularly highlighting the Amalfi Coast. The original oil paintings created by Antonio are now on display at Gallery Rouge Harpenden priced from £1,995.
Though having lived in Zimbabwe for a period, Shaw developed a love of wildlife upon returning home to England. Her fascination has found the abundance and variety of European flora and fauna to be a rich and exquisite subject, placing nature at the very heart of her work. Her paintbrush illuminates sunlit meadows, presenting wild flowers at their very best. Shaw’s work is the perfect way to create a new window in your home so striking you’d swear you can feel the soft breeze… The work of Mary Shaw is on display at Gallery Rouge St. Albans with prices for original works commencing at £395.

Sally is pictured above with David Shepherd and her beautiful painting ‘Pride of Safina’. The overall winner is from Devon, a fabulous sculptor called Nick Mackman. Before the results were given Hayley had already decided that out of the whole show she would like to buy one of her fabulous sculptures pictured here called Thandis and met with the artist. Commenting on the winning piece – a collection of ceramic warthogs and baby rhino, judge - artist and gallery owner - Hazel Soan said: “The pieces by Nick Mackman demonstrates her consistency of form and wonderful characterisation and individuality she moulds as if from the African earth to create such wonderful, living sculpture.” Nick Mackman is an award-winning sculptor of ceramic and bronze animal sculptures. The incredible diversity and beauty of the animal kingdom is a constant source of inspiration for me. I have a great affection for warthogs and rhinos, who are some of Africa’s most engaging beasts, so I was delighted to win the competition with my sculptures.” Hayley Norman commented ‘It was an amazing night and to see so much talent in one place I think they were all well deserved winners. We love Nick’s work and are proud to be able to represent her here in Hertfordshire. FEATURE
It’s all in the detail: The American phenomenon that is hitting the UK’s roads Lee Mitchell, managing director of Extreme Detailing Ltd, Hertfordshire’s own answer to a master detailer explains.
I
n the USA car washing and detailing accounts for an annual revenue of over nine billion dollars! Interestingly in the UK we have some of the most knowledgeable detailers in the world, second only to The States, and yet the industry is still not widely understood. We have a harsh environment for car paintwork here - the sun, air borne contaminants from power stations, industrial fallout and natural pollutants all settle on the car. Moisture and heat then act as a catalyst and the damage begins. This on top of water spots, bird droppings and tree sap compound the problems, making it challenging to keep the paintwork perfect In fact, if not done properly, washing a car can be detrimental to paintwork - sponges and chamois are certainly out of the question. You need to be sympathetic to the materials. For example, harsh chemicals corrode the brakes and reused sponges put fine marks in to the paint dulling it over time. Interiors need regular treatments including the trim, keeping that natural finish without unsightly shine. A car needs to be brought up to a high standard then protected and maintained. So, what is a detailer? Well we have an understanding of the materials used in the production of the car and how best to restore them, keeping trim looking its best and getting the cars paintwork to ‘pop’. A detailer can make the car look better than new, giving paintwork great depth of colour, glass optically
perfect and trim blemish free. Add to this protection developed specifically for each material used and the vehicle becomes so much easier to maintain and will stay looking great for years to come. Any knowledgeable detailer can expertly restore every aspect of your car - whether it’s addressing the grey, blotchy marks on the whale tale of a classic Porsche, or removing the shine on the dash on a classic Ferrari. There isn’t anything that cant be improved, often producing better results than from the factory! When it comes to an auto detailer, the secret is in the name. Every last ‘detail’ is considered when you use our service, from cleaning the inside of rims to removing the car’s badges to polish and protect. Detailers can spend between 3 and 12 hours correcting and enhancing a car’s paintwork – removing any marks and swirls that exist. Once cleaning, polishing and prep is complete, detailers use a range of products to protect a car from the elements. A great example is Gtechniq’s Crystal Serum which is guaranteed last for at least 7 years, providing high gloss levels and making a car a dream to maintain. Detailing is the best way to ensure one of your biggest assets maintains as much value as possible during its life span – if your car looks exceptional when you sell it, you will reap the benefits many times over. Why I just LOVE the Reviv Vitamin Infusions at Riverbanks!
By Chris Birch, personal trainer at The Gym Academy, Harpenden 4 6 J U LY 2 0 1 5
H
aving a career as a personal trainer and being actively involved in sport from a young age, I have learnt that results cannot be obtained from exercise alone. Another extremely important factor is nutrition and together with regular exercise, you will be able to achieve a healthy and balanced lifestyle. In addition, I believe that taking supplements is a big part of maintaining a healthy balanced diet, as even though I eat very healthily, I know that it’s not possible to get enough good nutrition from just my food alone even if it’s organic! In order for us to deal with all the external stresses in modern day-to- day living, supplementation is a must. Every stress that your bodies experience (emotional, physical, chemical or nutritional) will require an element of more nutrition than normal to counterbalance the effect. For example you drink or eat something unhealthy and processed and this will result in additional nutrition needed, to get rid of the toxin. When you drink alcohol your liver and kidney will need to working harder to remove it from your body and therefore will demand more nutrition than normal or if you go and run a marathon your body will demand more nutrients than usual. Up until recently, my supplements took the form of very pure powder in liquid and oral tablets and I will continue to use and recommend supplements in this way to my clients. However, I have now experienced the future of supplementation, which is in the form of a vitamin and antioxidant intravenous drip. Nutrition is added straight into your blood stream,
which is far more effective than tablet and powder form as these depend on your ability to digest and absorb nutrition, which on average delivers 40% of the supplement. The absorption rate of the drip is 100%!! The effect of this was unbelievable and I have just experienced one of the best nights sleeps for a long time. When I visited Riverbanks, I had a consultation with Dr Ravi Jain who is an internationally renowned expert in aesthetic Medicine. He also trains regularly with my colleague Joel Llande and understands how nutrition affects overall fitness and well being. He explained that the REVIV vitamin drips have been thoroughly evaluated globally with over 30,000 treatments performed with no adverse reactions. He demonstrated that the drip would go straight into a vein in my arm, much like having a blood test. It would last about 30-45 mins and would be painless. My 1st treatment was called the Royal Flush which gave my body a massive influx of pure nutrition and as a result I had a restless night sleep. After a few days I felt fantastic, in a word Revived and the following night, I slept really well. I have now had further treatments with an infusion mix called Megaboost which is like a maintenance which gave me no side effects. This may be because I already had a good influx of nutrition a month ago. The Megaboost contains Vitamin B complex, vitamin C as well as high levels of the super antioxidant Glutathione. The Glutathione is excellent at repairing cells and tissues with visible results. I will continue to have this treatment once a month in conjunction with oral supplements. This testimonial is written by Chris Birch a Harpenden Based personal trainer with years of experience as a Biosignature practitioner, hormonal profiling and Kinesiologist. The REVIV Vitamin Infusions are exclusively available at Riverbanks Clinic, East Hyde. All treatments are carried out by medical doctors led by Dr Ravi Jain. t’s a lovely day, so you decide to take your drink or your book outside to enjoy while basking in your sun lounger or favourite garden armchair. Or perhaps you’ve invited some friends for lunch al fresco – after all, there’s plenty of room around your beautiful teak garden table. All is going splendidly, until the wasps decide to come and join you. Whilst we would never advocate mass wasp destruction – they are an important part of our garden ecosystem with a taste for aphids –
There is a product designed especially for teak garden furniture. High or Low Maintenance
Replacement Roofline‌.Your Call
W
ood cladding, despite its many drawbacks, still remains a very popular choice when it comes to cladding, fascias and soffits, but like with all choices relating to protecting your home, there are pros and cons. Selecting wood as a building material can lead to a variety of problems not associated with today’s modern virtually maintenance free alternatives. For example wood cladding can attract insects like termites, which can damage it significantly, plus it is vulnerable to fire. 6 6 J U LY 2 0 1 5
In addition, fascias, more often than not, tend to get the most exposure from the elements than soffits for example. Whilst traditionally in the past fascias were made out of wood, but now more modern durable alternatives are available. When wood is exposed to prolonged sunshine or rainfall, it can swell and/or crack, with the consequence of the paint starting to peel away, making the entire property look uncared for and in need of repair. It is when gaps
ends, as more often than not, when the old fascia boards are removed it breaks up sections of the mortar, loosening the end tiles. An experienced roofline contractor is more likely to be able to cause less disruption to existing roof tiles and if they are disturbed have the expertise and materials on hand to be able to re-bed the tiles safely and securely. Whilst there is obviously an initial financial outlay of getting a professional home improvement company with a
By choosing wood, you are “signing up” to the additional expense of having to stain or paint it many times over the years appear that insects can find a new “home” and the beauty of wood starts to lose it’s appeal, especially as it requires regular costly upkeep. Because the primary role of exterior cladding, fascias and soffits is to protect a property from water ingress and damp (along with extremes of cold and heat), if the outer structure is damaged or becomes frail, your property by definition is less protected and at risk. By choosing wood, you are “signing up” to the additional expense of having to stain or paint it many times over the years. Also wood can develop colonies of moss, algae, or mould which in turn may lead to rot. A substantial number of UK property owners still choose wood because of its natural beauty, and also as it allows them to elect from a wide range of stain or paint colours. It is easy to work with and fit, plus biodegradable if not protected with preservatives. The main benefit of fitting UPVC roofline is the very low maintenance requirement, only needing a wipe down with warm soapy water every couple of years or so. There are several ways to go about the fitting cladding, fascias and soffits to your property. Traditionally one either clads over the existing cladding, fascias and soffits, or preferably ensures a full strip off of the existing wooden materials. It is important to make certain that ventilation is fitted in the soffit boards, so that your property does not suffer from condensation in the loft space, which can remain undetected until significant damage is done. Professional companies will rightly advise complete removal of any existing wood material, unless it is in remarkably pristine condition, and you/they can be confident that it will never cause any issues in the future. Before deciding to try and do a DIY job, consider whether or not you will be 100% safe and confident working at the top of a ladder or on a tower, as replacing cladding, fascias and soffits or guttering and downpipes is not a job for the inexperienced or fainthearted, so you might want to think carefully if you have the knowledge and experience to carry out a safe, aesthetically pleasing and watertight installation. There is also the issue of re-bedding the tiles on gable
proven track record to replace your roofline, the long term benefits to your property, guaranteed workmanship and peace of mind outweigh the risks and dangers of going it alone.
