From the award-winning golf course to The Stables restaurant, both of which have also undergone exciting refurbishments - guests can expect truly unforgettable experiences.

Hatfield Park and Gardens open for the season and there really is something to enjoy for all the family. You can enjoy a peaceful stroll around the beautiful sundial, West Parterre and Old Palace Gardens, which have been carefully curated and nurtured over the ages. Visit the adjacent Woodland Gardens and find yourself surrounded by the beautiful mature beach and oak trees, and magnificent rhododendrons.

Gardens featuring more weeds and less formality have taken centre stage at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show, placing more emphasis on letting nature take control. Native plants and trees, nettles, dandelions and a predominantly green palette of planting feature in many of the 36 show gardens, along with salvaged and upcycled materials. Elsewhere, huge bursts of colour remain in the Great Pavilion, while firsttime exhibitors include mushroom growers the Caley Bros.

TIME FOR TEA

Calling all tea lovers to a new exhibition at St Albans Museum + Gallery favourite tea mug.

With 36 billion cups consumed a year in the UK, 3,000 varieties available and tea being the second most popular beverage only to water, it is firmly entrenched in British culture. Believed to be brought to Europe by Dutch traders in the 1600s, it was a favourite of Princess Catherine of Braganza, wife of King Charles II, who set the trend for drinking tea which continues to this day .

A tantalising new exhibition, ‘Time for Tea’ opens on 19 May at St Albans Museum + Gallery, exploring the fascinating journey of tea from leaf to cup and the worldwide significance of this popular beverage.

Following a preview for local supporters, councillors and dignitaries on Thursday 18 May, the free exhibition held in the Weston Gallery, will run until 05 November 2023 and includes complementary, immersive activities.

From a quick cuppa during the day to a luxurious afternoon tea, a cup of tea is a familiar moment in many peoples’ lives. Referred to in literature, popular culture, film and TV – including at the Mad Hatter’s tea party, served by penguins in Mary Poppins and a favourite of Downton’s Lady Violet Crawley - tea is a most-loved drink with a fascinating story.

Sarah Keeling, Curator- Post Medieval to Contemporary at St Albans Museums, says:

“We are delighted to bring this wonderful exhibition to St Albans. Time for Tea celebrates the nation’s love affair with tea exploring its history, how it’s made, drunk and its significance across the world. Visitors can also enjoy a nostalgic look at the tea houses and cafés St Albans has been home to in the past.

“There will be engaging imagery, including ‘A Tea Party at Napsbury’ by artist Louis Wain, beautiful displays of ornate tea bowls and decorative teapots from our collection, and after a wander through the exhibition visitors can relax with a cuppa in the museum’s Courtroom Café.”

The exhibition will take visitors through what tea is, how it comes to the UK, is packaged, stored, made, and then drunk from different vessels. There will be a look at tea from a social perspective including how different cultures enjoy tea and a community sourced display of people’s

A range of complementary activities will be offered including family activities, talks, creative workshops, and an incredible Georgian Costume Ball taking place in the grand Georgian Assembly room at the museum. Guests are invited to wear modern day formal attire or let their imaginations run wild and wear an outfit befitting 18th century Georgian high society. The evening will include live music, dancing with the assistance of an historical dance caller and canapes.

Part of the exhibition will include the recreation of former local tearoom Thrales Café, using original signs and furniture stored in the museum’s collection- the area will also include a play café and space for interactive activities and further reading.

Councillor Allison Wren, Vice-chair of the public realm committee of St Albans City and District Council and lead councillor for museums says:

“I am incredibly grateful to the museum team for bringing another fascinating and high-quality, cultural exhibition to the city which will attract visitors from near and far. CLASSIC IBIZA AT HATFIELD HOUSE TO CELEBRATE THE LIFE OF ICONIC FAITHLESS FRONTMAN

THE DETAILS

Gates open at Hatfield House at 5pm, with the show starting with a Chill-Out DJ Set. Former Pacha Ibiza resident, DJ Jose Luis then takes control of the decks for his Latin House Set, which includes a live jamming session with members of USO. Next up, USO and DJ Goldierocks take centre stage for the Sundowner set, followed by Goldierocks’ Deep House DJ Set. The show then reaches a rapturous crescendo at 10.30pm, following USO’s return to the stage for the Dance Set and laser & light show.

With preparations now in full swing for Classic Ibiza’s return to Hatfield House on Saturday 19 August, the concert organisers have revealed their plans to pay homage to iconic Faithless frontman Maxi Jazz, who sadly passed away late last year.

We Come 1 by Faithless is one of 15 new tracks being given the special Urban Soul Orchestra (USO) treatment on Classic Ibiza’s eight night UK tour. USO will also be performing two other Faithless anthems and firm crowd favourites, Insomnia and God Is a DJ, in the tribute.

Classic Ibiza’s Lisa Ward comments: “We know how much our audience love tracks by Faithless, so it feels right for us to celebrate the life of Maxi Jazz – someone who lives on in his music and continues to touch so many of us with his emotive lyrics and unique delivery style.”

These new tracks will be joining a set of over 30 house classics, reimagined by an orchestra who have worked alongside the likes of Groove Armada, Nightmares on Wax and Robert Miles.

Commenting

32-piece

Stephen Hussey, USO’s founder and Classic Ibiza conductor, says: “While it’s important to use a lot of the original essence of a track, such as hooks and riffs, the process is about imagining what I’d have done on the original recording. All the tracks we perform at Classic Ibiza have great melodies and of course beats – giving them the full orchestral treatment turns up the dial by creating this immense wall of sound. That’s gotta be good for the soul!”.

Classic Ibiza at Hatfield is proud to be supporting Herts Young Homeless. There will be various fundraising initiatives taking place on the evening, including a £2.50 donation from every programme sold.

Information: Parking is free and there are no booking fees. Bring your own picnic or visit the on-site street-food vendors and San Miguel Bar.

Prices: Adults (over 18s): £48, Children (aged 5–17): £24, Under 5s: free. Visit: classicibiza.co.uk

VIP PROTECTION

Westminster Security is a private security company headquartered in its namesake - Westminster, central London. They were established at the turn of the millennium after recognising a niche and under-catered sector within the private security industry. That was high-end security services for UHNW individuals, private households, company owners, and executives alike.

The private security sector was awash with ‘security companies’ providing basic and lowstandard security guarding services, many being rogue and unlicensed companies run by criminals and protection rackets. Thankfully, those days are long behind us now due in part to the regulation of the Industry by the Home Office and the creation of the Security Industry Authority (SIA).

These days, you will likely find more security companies trying to crack the lucrative ‘highend’ market with their service offerings, yet one name remains consistent at the pinnacle of their

trade and the chosen provider to many securityconscious individuals, families, and businesses.

Having built an excellent reputation and enviable brand image through their high standards, exceptional attention to detail, and excellence. Westminster Security has established itself as the industry leader and the ‘go-to’ company for ‘luxury’ high-end security services.

Their services are based around their core service of close protection, what is that? We hear you say. Well, essentially, its bodyguards, but not as you might envisage them. When we think of bodyguards, we all naturally think of Hulk-like burly men or gun-toting Hollywood hearth-throbs. But the reality is very different.

John Moore, Managing Director of Westminster Security Ltd said “Close protection operatives (bodyguards) come in all shapes and sizes, non are armed in the UK, and female bodyguards are ever more popular with our clients”. John is a veteran of the British Army where he served in the Royal Military Police and specialised in close protection within the Close Protection Unit. So, we believe him.

Other services they provide in support of their close protection operations include highly trained security chauffeurs, residential security guards, surveillance, and VIP event security.

We’ll provide a paper bag for collecting lavender which can be picked up at the entrance to the field. We kindly request that you bring your own scissors to help support our additional safety measures currently in place due to COVID-19. We advise that the lavender should only be cut from the sides of the bushes, not from the top. Our main flowering season is between mid-June and late August. Amateur photography is welcomed!

We have many varieties of British wild flowers in our meadow including Common Knapweed, Lady’s Bedstraw, Poppy, Tufted Vetch, Cornflower and Field Forget-Me-Not. The meadow can be found towards the right hand side of our main field and will usually be in flower from early summer.

PLANTING & GROWING

Our top tips for growing lavender at home: Ideally, lavender prefers to be planted in a

porous soil, such as sand or chalk. Chalk is ideal as it is slightly alkaline and allows for rain water to permeate through.

Lavender can grow in a non-porous soil, such as clay, if sand or grit or something that allows drainage is mixed in.

Here at the farm, we’re lucky to have ideal growing conditions as the soil is chalky and the slope of our field allows for a high amount of surface run-off, meaning that our lavender doesn’t sit in water for too long.

Lavender likes to be in a place that will get a lot of sun but so long as the plant is well aerated, it will still thrive.

When first planted, lavender needs help to become established in the ground and will need watering for the first seven to ten days or so. Once established, it won’t need any additional watering aside from incidental rainfall. If you’re planning to keep your lavender plant in a pot you will however, need to keep watering it occasionally. It doesn’t necessarily need any extra feed to help it become established.

There can be flexibility when it comes to harvesting your lavender stems. If you’re cutting

your plant for fresh flowers, you can cut them whenever you like. For dried lavender, they should ideally be picked just before the petals (corollas) open up.

When pruning, stems should be cut above the greenery, about two inches above the old wood. This will allow for new growth for next season. If the stem is cut too far down into the old wood, it can damage or even kill off a plant. Lavender will survive just as happily if pruned once the lavender heads have lost all their colour.

WHICH VARIETY TO PICK?

There are 39 species of lavender worldwide and within each species there are hundreds of varieties, meaning that there are many different colours, scents and foliage types to choose from.

We have 2 main species that are farmed at Hitchin Lavender. They are Lavandula Angustifolia and Lavandula x Intermedia, although you’ll be able to see 60 varieties growing in our display field and 10 varieties in our main field.

Angustifolia is a very valuable species of lavender because of the high quality oil that is produced by the plants. The oils can be used in perfume, cosmetics, for aromatherapy and utilised as an antiseptic. Its typical flowering period is from mid-June to late July. It is an extremely hardy plant and fairly forgiving of pruning mistakes! It has a shorter stem than other species and more contained greenery, making it a good option for domestic use.

Intermedia is a hybrid plant which comes from a combination of Angustifolia and Latifolia lavenders. Many varieties of Intermedia are used for producing commercial oil and dried bunches, as the yields from these plants are up to three times greater than Angustifolia. Intermedia is also very hardy with a flowering period from early July through to September.

If you’d like to pick a variety of lavender that can be found in our fields, you’ll find a selection of Angustifolia and Intermedia plants, available in two different pot sizes in our farm shop. Dogs are welcome on-site so long as they are kept on a lead and any doggy deposits are cleared

away by their owners.

The lavender attracts a diverse mix of wildlife, in particular bees. You’ll be able to see many bees amongst the lavender rows. Much of the other wildlife may be harder to spot but the farm is home to hares, butterflies, insects, partridges, skylarks and more.

Experience a different view of Hitchin Lavender and the surrounding countryside by walking along the public footpaths which intersect our farm alongside our main field and outbuildings.

Professional photography is allowed anytime during our general opening hours but is subject to an additional fee.

Highlights and trends from RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2023: SUSTAINABILITY,

WILDLIFE AND WEEDS

This year’s show gardens let nature do the talking, as gardening editor Hannah Stephenson discovers.

This year’s show is likely to spark controversy, reckons garden designer Andrew Duff, co-chair of the Society of Garden Designers and managing director of the Inchbald School of Design.

“There’s a clear message about sustainability and environmental factors in an aesthetic way. There’s

a loss about actually, what is a garden supposed to do?” he says. “Right across the show, the inference is that nature’s taking control… maybe that it’s OK to let weeds grow and let things get a little bit ruinous.

“But at the end of the day, people like a lawn, they like to look after a space – that’s part of being in a garden – and it’s time that we need (to address) that controversy,” Duff adds.

Reflecting on the topic, Matthew Pottage, curator of RHS Garden Wisley, says: “We are having a climate crisis. We do need to garden environmentally sensitively. Is this the place to be showing that? It’s arguably the world’s best flower show, so this is the place.”

5 HIGHLIGHT GARDENS FROM THIS YEAR’S RHS CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW

Centrepoint Garden

Love it or hate it, this garden is likely to cause a stir with its partly demolished house, so-called ‘weeds’ and a fallen tree. Designer Cleve West has admitted it’s a ‘Marmite garden’ – people will love it or hate it.

“There’s a sense of abandonment, which is so

clever. Cleve West has done a partly demolished ruined house with the idea of nature taking over,” Duff observes. “He’s saying it’s a metaphor for what it is to be young and homeless. There are nettles and dandelion seedheads. It’s really going to question what beauty is in a plant – and I think we need to have that discussion.”

Nurture Landscapes Garden

If you’re looking to take home some plants with you, be inspired by the beautiful Benton irises in rich shades of pastels and deep yellows which you’ll see in designer Sarah Price’s Nurture Landscapes show garden, inspired by the artist and plantsman Cedric Morris.

Memoria and GreenAcres Transcendence Garden

Designers Gavin McWilliam and Andrew Wilson’s garden aims to deliver an uplifting spiritual space, reflecting the emotional experience at the end of life (it’s going to a bereavement site after the show).

“Controversially, they’ve used concrete, but with the idea that this concrete is going to be around for hundreds of years,” says Duff. “It’s not a single use concrete.

“It has a simple palette of planting, is cool and calm and you immediately feel rested. The minimal use of materials and colour palette was really special and a moment of calm in the entire show. It was a relief to get to it,” Duff adds.

Myeloma UK – A Life Worth Living Garden

Top designer Chris Beardshaw’s garden has a much more traditional garden feel, with a structured order in the colourful planting against a backdrop of clipped yew, including peonies and salvias, plus inspired woodland planting.

Horatio’s Garden

Putting wheelchair access at the forefront of their design, Charlotte Harris and Hugo Bugg (Harris Bugg Studio), have created the eighth garden for the eponymous charity, which builds gardens to improve the lives of people with spinal cord injury.

The wheelchair-accessible space, influenced by the ways of seeing from a bed or a wheelchair, features tactile stone cairn and a table water feature to encourage wildlife, while a garden pod provides a cocooning place for physical and emotional shelter. After the show it will be relocated to Sheffield’s Princess Royal Spinal Cord Injuries Centre.

“There’s an incredible depth of planting, which is mind-blowingly beautiful, and beehives of warm cut stone which kind of replace topiary – they’ve made topiary out of stone,” says Duff.

TOP TRENDS

These are some of the key gardening trends to emerge from this year’s event.

Wildlife

“Unsurprisingly, there’s going to be the awareness of wildlife-friendly planting,” says Pottage.

JUNE 2023 41
“There’s an incredible depth of planting, which is mindblowingly beautiful”

“There’s lots of habitat in gardens, but hopefully showing that can be beautiful as well. There are lots of logpiles, lots of water, lots of native plants, but also lots of gardenesque planting.”

Reclaimed and reused

Crushed concrete, piles of rubble, bare sand, reused bricks and other recycled material dominate many of the show gardens’ pathways and form decorative features in several gardens. There’s a message to get gardeners thinking about how they might reuse materials, which formerly headed for the skip.

“All the gardens have a destination, which is really important,” says Pottage – the show gardens are all being relocated after the show.

Award-winning designer Tom Massey, who has this year designed The Royal Entomological Society Garden, predicts: “Reuse of waste materials is going to be a big thing.”

He uses crushed construction waste in his show garden, including crushed bricks and concrete to create a textured, aesthetic backdrop for the planting along with deadwood. “These waste materials are really good habitat for insects,” he points out.

Plants

People will be encouraged to grow native plants, from hazel to cow parsley, while those seeking colour may go for irises, which are prevalent at this year’s show. There’s also a resurgence of common yew (Taxus baccata) and other familiar plants including a cloud pine, Eleagnus ‘Quicksilver’

Drought-tolerant plants are also being pushed –some 55% of perennials in the show gardens are drought-tolerant, almost double that of last year, including fennel, salvia and cistus.

Weeds

Dandelions and other weeds feature in some of the gardens. Chelsea gold medallist Cleve West notes: “People get their knickers in a twist about weeds but they are the pioneer plants that stitch everything together.

“It’s just getting people to understand that all the things we kill with herbicides and pesticides can look quite beautiful,” West adds. “Just be more tolerant, and if you have a space where you can let nature take its course, it’s got to be good for wildlife and insects.”

Massey adds: “Dandelions are an early source of pollen and nectar for bees – and insects are in mass decline, so we need to be more considerate in the way we manage and maintain our gardens.”

Sculpture

“We are seeing nature becoming the sculpture,” says Duff, citing designer Sarah Price’s Nurture Landscapes Garden Mediterranean cloud pine. There are pillows of yew in the Memoria and GreenAcres Transcendence Garden.

Nods to the Royal Family abound, from bronze bust of the King in A Garden of Royal Reflection and Celebration, which features some of the Windsor family’s favourite plants including roses and camassia, plus several crowns featuring flora and fauna.

Standing at just under 7m is the biggest driftwood sculpture ever displayed at Chelsea, a Wyvern dragon perched on a tree, the centrepiece of sculptor James Doran-Webb’s exhibit.

And paying homage to the unsung heroines of horticulture at The Monument is the ‘Women in Horticulture’ exhibit honouring the likes of Janaki Ammal, Beth Chatto and Gertrude Jekyll.

Bigging up small spaces

Guy Barter, chief horticulturist for the RHS, says people are likely to be planting bigger trees on their balconies and also using drought-tolerant species. “This year there’s a pollinator section, a wildlife bath, and drought-resistant plants.”

These are side-by-side with similarly extravagant outfits from the Georgian era – including the gown worn by Lady Helen Robertson in around 1760, which has a nearly three-metre wide skirt.

“We wanted to examine the 18th-century court through the lens of contemporary fashion – because there are so many similarities across the centuries,” Carol Swords, said creative programming and interpretation manager at Historic Royal Palaces.

Outfits once worn by Beyonce, Blake Lively, Billy Porter, Nicola Coughlan and Katy Perry populate the rooms of Kensington Palace, as part of a blockbuster new fashion exhibition.

Crown To Couture explores the similarities between fashion and celebrity in the 18th-century court and the red carpet today.

Nearly four years in the making, it’s the biggest exhibition ever put on at Kensington Palace. It brings together over 200 items – ranging from gowns to handbags and jewellery – many of which are instantly recognisable.

There’s the intricate gold embellished outfit and matching headdress by Peter Dundas that pregnant Beyonce wore to perform at the 2017 Grammys; the bright green Christopher John Rogers gown Lady Gaga donned – complete with a face mask – at the 2020 VMAs; and the intricate gold dress actor Billy Porter wore to the 2020 Oscars. Designed by Giles Deacon, the pattern of Porter’s dress was actually inspired by one of the

“As we dug deeper, we realised the Georgian era and the contemporary 21st-century – in terms of spectacle, in terms of life, in terms of how things are perceived – the red carpet and the Georgian court, there are so many connections.”

Each room is dedicated to a different aspect of attending a big event – from getting ready, to attending court or the red carpet, through to the after-party.

The similarities between the two eras are stark. In the room dedicated to getting ready, Georgian beauty products sit next to a table of modern make-up.

In the 18th-century, upper-class women would invite others to watch them get ready – which could take five or six hours – similar to the way ‘get ready with me’ videos have exploded in popularity on social media.

The King’s Gallery was the place where you wanted to look your best and be seen by others in the 1700s, and now it’s home to some of the most extraordinary outfits of the exhibition.

Many come from the Met Gala. Known as fashion’s biggest night, it’s one of the most important events for celebrities to be seen at every year.

Singer Billie Eilish’s romantic pink Oscar de la Renta gown – inspired by Marilyn Monroe and worn to the 2021 event – is the first thing you see

walking into the room, and is followed by a stream of recognisable looks.

These include singer Lizzo’s structural Thom Browne ensemble (worn to the 2022 Met Gala), model Iris Law’s Moschino gown (2022) and actor Blake Lively’s jaw-dropping Versace homage to New York architecture – worn when she was cochair of the event in 2022.

Throughout the modern aspects of the exhibition, there’s an emphasis on diversity and inclusion.

Swords explained the curators were keen to make it feel “as relevant as we possibly can”.

She said: “Those questions about diversity, gender, race, everything – we’ve embodied them, we’ve taken them on and we’ve taken that challenge – but we’ve tried to do it in a really sensitive way.”

Swords points to Beyonce’s Grammys outfit, displayed in the King’s Presence Chamber, flanked by Yeoman Warders either side.

In Georgian times, this is where monarchs would have received courtiers, ministers and foreign ambassadors, and Swords said placing Beyonce there was an opportunity to highlight her “black excellence”.

Swords wants visitors to see “that the connections across the century are more profound than we imagined.

“We always think the past is just the past, but human beings are human beings.”

Crown To Couture runs at Kensington Palace until October 29.

SARUM HALL SCHOOL COLLABORATES WITH FREUD MUSEUM ON ARTS PROJECT INSPIRED BY DREAMS

Sheep’.

The programme culminated in a class visit to the Museum where they held discussions with the education team about dreams, identity, and well-being. Pupils could also see their artwork on display at the Museum, and enjoy a performance in the beautiful grounds of the Museum by the school choir.

Sarum Hall School, an independent girls’ prep school in London’s Belsize Park, has collaborated with the Freud Museum on a cross-curricular arts project with the theme of ‘Dreams’.

The School and Museum came together after an introduction from the Camden Spark’s ‘Creative Conversations’ programme which aims to connect local cultural organisations in Camden with young people.

Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, believed that dream interpretation was the key to understanding the unconscious. Inspired by this, Sarum Hall teachers Julian Richards (music), Emma Diamond (art), and the Freud Museum’s Education Manager Stefan Marianski joined together to create the programme for Year 6 pupils.

Art teacher Ms Diamond worked with the pupils to study the paintings of surreal and abstract artists such as Magritte, Picasso, Chagall and Dali and then coached them through making their own creations. Pupils worked from photographs and used colours and motifs that they felt reflected something of their interests or personality. They experimented with different paint application methods, including paper cut stencils, masking tape, watercolour paint and sponging and flicking techniques. These pictures were then displayed at the Museum for all to see.

In Music, Mr Richards and the school choir learned Kate Bush’s 1984 song ‘And Dream of

Miss Karen Coles, Headmistress at Sarum Hall School, says: “Partnering with the Freud Museum has been such a fun and immersive experience. We love joining together with local cultural institutions as it helps bring learning to life for our pupils. We’re committed to delivering a high-quality arts and cultural education and we aim to increase knowledge, curiosity and appreciation for the arts which will remain with our pupils into their adult lives.”

Sarum Hall School was awarded Artsmark Silver status earlier this year. The Artsmark Award is the only creative quality standard for schools, accredited by the Arts Council England. It supports schools to develop and celebrate arts and cultural education, putting creativity and wellbeing at the heart of the curriculum. sarumhallschool.co.uk; freud.org.uk

EXCITING ANIMAL ENCOUNTERS AT HERTFORD BARNS DAY NURSERY

Hertford Barns Day Nursery provides the perfect space for children to thrive in countryside surroundings, set against a backdrop of rolling fields where children point out hot air balloons overhead and wave to farmers passing by on their tractors. Having recently welcomed a flock of lambs and ewes as a permanent addition to the Cole Green setting, pre-schoolers are able to learn about life cycles first-hand, as well as the importance of caring for other living creatures with activities including bottle feeding and petting sessions.

The exciting animal encounters add a valuable new element to the nursery’s Eco-Schools curriculum, with topics covered including biodiversity and global citizenship, for which they have earnt a prestigious ‘Green Flag’, the highest accolade in the international programme which is awarded for exceptional environmental awareness and conservation practices. At Hertford Barns, children take part in sustainable activities all year round as part of the scheme, from planting and growing herbs and vegetables which are then used as ingredients in meals by talented Nursery Chefs, to crafting with natural and recycled materials.

Hertford Barns Day Nursery Manager, Jenny Pratt explained; “The arrival of the lambs has been an incredible experience for all involved, with valuable life lessons around treating all

living things with respect. This will support the children’s understanding of the world, as well as scaffold on their communication and language skills and support personal, social and emotional development”. Back inside, days are planned around children’s personal interests and designed in line with Early Years Foundation Stage principles to ensure they are prepared with the knowledge and skills needed for their next steps in education.

Spacious classrooms inside the stunning barn conversion and historic stable block are home to stimulating learning spaces, state of the art ICT, toys and equipment, messy play stations, ‘role play’ areas and purpose-built facilities including a children’s shaker style kitchen for cooking and baking activities. Here pre-schoolers can design their own menus and showcase their culinary skills, all whilst learning basic mathematical concepts through weighing and measuring, as well as the importance of good nutrition to healthy lifestyles.

The nursery also boasts a comprehensive school readiness programme, with focus areas ranging from phonics to self-care, to ensure children are confident and independent learners, ready to embrace school life. Hertford Barns provides a fully-inclusive service with award-winning meals and is currently taking children from six weeks to nearly five years old.

St Margaret’s School Pupil Breaks Regional Record at British Powerlifting Championships

Alocal Hertfordshire pupil from St Margaret’s, an independent day and boarding school in Bushey, has lifted a regional record in weight for her age, coming fourth place in the UK having competed against hundreds of other young people in the Sub-Junior and Junior British Powerlifting Championships in Solihull recently. The championship ran across five days where pupil, Jodie Fox, competed in the sub-junior women’s 69kg class.

The event involved three different lifts in competitive powerlifting: the squat, bench and deadlift. Each athlete had to perform each lift three times, increasing the weight each time. The highest scoring attempt for each lift is added together to give a total score.

Jodie Fox, who is a sixth form student at St Margaret’s School explained, “My total in the British Championships was 310kg, which was a regional record. This was made up of my highest squat - 120kg, a regional record and personal best, bench - 55kg another personal best, and finally deadlift - 135kg, a regional record and another personal best for me.”

Jodie’s success saw her reach a closely fought battle for third place where she narrowly missed out by only 2.5kg, coming fourth in the country

“My total in the British Championships was 310kg, which was a regional record. This was made up of my highest squat - 120kg, a regional record and personal best, bench - 55kg another personal best, and finally deadlift - 135kg, a regional record and another personal best for me”

for her age and weight class. Up until a year ago, Jodie who is currently in Year 13 at St Margaret’s School, had never even heard of powerlifting. She was introduced to it by her personal trainer, who noticed that she was unusually strong for her age. She has been powerlifting since April 2021 and she trains four times per week.

“I am already training hard for my next competition, which is the All-England Championships, to be held in Manchester in August this year. My goal for the All-England is to break more records, achieve more personal bests and place in the top three lifters, which would potentially open up the opportunity to perform at the Commonwealth Games next year,” said Jodie.

Camilla Powell, St Margaret’s Head of PE & Sport added, “At a time of adversity Jodie has shown great fortitude. Her application and determination accompanied by her willingness to succeed, has led her to qualify for the British Powerlifting Championships. She has moved mountains surpassing her own expectations and is a true inspiration to us all.”

Jodie is going to university in September and plans to join the university powerlifting team so she can keep making progress and someday become the strongest powerlifter in the UK. stmargarets-school.org.uk

HOW TO ENCOURAGE YOUR DAUGHTERS INTO STEM

Boost your daughter’s confidence

Tell your daughters to “go for it”, says Dr Ems Lord, director of NRICH (nrich.maths.org), the University of Cambridge’s maths outreach programme. “You’ll never be bored if you love a challenge, and the thrill you get from solving a problem never wains.”

Danielle Desouza discovers how to inspire girls within the realms of science, technology, engineering and maths.

When you think of women in science, some key names might come to mind, such as Marie Curie, Mae Jemison or Sarah Gilbert. But this is just scratching the surface: there are countless other women working to find cures for illnesses, teaching future generations about gravity or making coding seem as easy as breathing.

Women across science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) share their advice on how parents can positively encourage daughters into these fields…

Stress the importance of not giving up, advises Rachel Youngman, deputy chief executive at the Institute of Physics (iop. org). It can be intimidating entering a male-dominated field, but it is important for young people to realise “you are just as worthy of a place on a STEM course as a male student, and just as able to achieve success”, she says.

It’s also worth challenging your own stereotypes, with Youngman saying: “Leave your preconceptions at the door, and acknowledge that your idea of what it means to study physics may not be an accurate one.”

“I think I was lucky, because my parents were very supportive,” says Dr Sadie Jones, outreach leader in astronomy at the University of Southampton. “I would say stuff like, ‘I want to be an astronaut’, and they would say: ‘Why not?’”

Reach out to organisations supporting women in STEM

As a parent, it can be hard to answer questions about STEM if you’re not involved in the field –but there are plenty of networks that can help.

Pioneer (joely-to.wixsite.com/pioneer) is a support network for girls wanting to pursue maths, set up by Joely To, who’s a student herself. It provides work experience with top companies, and gives girls the opportunity to connect with female mentors in the industry.

You could also reach out to Women In Tech (women-in-tech.org) – an organisation founded by Ayumi Moore Aoki to empower women to enter STEM, or The Blackett Lab Family Group (theblackettlabfamily.com) – a collective of black physicists.

Jones says parents should encourage their daughters to get involved in the area they’re interested in. “I managed to get a week of work

experience at a university,” she says, recommending “emailing people and just seeing if you can shadow someone, even if it’s only for a few days, just so you can get a feel of what the job is like”.

Encourage curiosity from a young age

Lord says you don’t need to purchase expensive STEM tools or resources to spark curiosity in your child’s mind. “If families are looking to support their daughters, I’d encourage them to be more curious about their world when out and about,” she says. “Take time to notice the world around you, wonder at what you see and discuss what else you’d like to discover.”

Vanessa Oakes is doing her PhD in biomedicine, and is a clinical instructor in anatomic pathology at Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine (vetmed.vt.edu). Her advice is: “Take her to the zoo, take her to museums, spend time outdoors looking at grass and leaves and twigs, let her ask what they’re made of and how they grow. Every STEM field is about asking questions first, and finding answers only second.”

Advocate for STEM opportunities at school Schools can play a major role in a student’s development. “I remember when I was doing my GCSEs, the teacher actually showed us a video about supermassive black holes and I remember being so fascinated by that – and that’s what I ended up doing my PHD in,” says Jones. She now gives educational talks in schools, highlighting the contributions made by female scientists.

If you think your child’s school should be offering more STEM-based activities, why not feed that back and see if you can cultivate change?

Ice Life at Tewinbury...

negative thoughts we are ready to take on the ice.

It was really strange as after the breathwork I felt like I had transitioned into a completely calm state and stepping in the ice just felt normal. Once fully submerged into the ice the clock begins for 3 minutes. Jon and dean stay at your side supporting and helping with the breath work we had just learnt. The team stays and supports with words of support and encouragement, it starts to feel like an amazing achievement just staying in the ice.

The experience feels almost like a roller coaster of amazing emotions, I feel like I am suddenly letting go any negativity I have been holding onto. When the three minutes are up, the team together do a group count down and applaud - you feel a little like a new person.

After we were lucky enough as a team to use Tewinbury Facilities including a hot tub and sauna to get warmed up, the Ice wellness team treated us to some amazing herbal coffees followed by a healthy beautiful light lunch which led us nicely into an afternoon of more breath work and meditation.

“Imust admit I was sceptical when someone first mentioned Breathwork and Ice water therapy to me, however when the opportunity to attend the Ice Life event at Tewinbury arose I jumped at the chance to try something new and completely outside of my comfort zone.

From the moment you walk into the workshop, you are immediately put at ease by Jon, Dean and the team. It’s in a beautiful location in Tewinbury - with warm cosy rooms, beautiful views, and the perfect mood lighting. You feel relaxed and comfortable instantly.

Its hard to not think straight away about the full tub of ice you can see clearly, then the nerves quickly set in. Jon is quick to tell you to relax and starts the session with a warmup and an overview on what the day will involve. Jon and Dean quickly felt like people I had known for years, they can really hold a room and you are listening to every word they say. They had my trust instantly and I knew I was in good hands.

The session starts with breath work, all my nerves drift away and I have honesty never felt so relaxed. After breathwork, warm up, mediation and talk of inner locking goals and getting shot of any

Honesty Jon, Dean and the Team spread a little magic on this day, their knowledge and how they conduct the day is just unique and quite frankly good for the soul.

I can’t recommend these workshops anymore, it was a fantastic day unlocking potentials, stepping out of comfort zones and taking time out for me. Since the day I have slept better, I have more energy, my stress levels have reduced, and I honestly feel better about everything. tewinbury.co.uk

swimwear trends This summer’s hottest

These bikini and swimsuit styles will be everywhere, says Katie Wright.

Holiday season is here – and when it comes to packing for summer getaways, swimwear is of the utmost importance.

Whether you’re jetting across the globe or staycationing in the sunshine, a stylish swimsuit or two-piece is a must-have – and there are plenty of incredible pieces to choose from this season. From vintage-inspired prints to bold colours and figure-flattering shapes, these are the five key swimwear trends to know about now…

RETRO FLORALS

The groovy Sixties and Seventies fashion trend spills over into beachwear with flower-powered swimsuits and bikinis. Amp up the vintage vibes by teaming yours with cork wedges, a floppy sun hat and a crochet cover-up.

BARBIE PINK

After what feels like years of anticipation, Greta Gerwig’s live-action Barbie film lands in cinemas right in the middle of vacation season – on July 21 –and the all-pink-everything trend is still going strong. With a plethora of pink swimwear on the high street – everything from string bikinis to sporty suits, in every shade from pastels to fuchsia

– everyone can live their best Malibu Barbie life this summer.

BANDEAU

After several seasons of lingerie-inspired multistrap swimwear that leaves you, more often than not, with very weird tanlines (we’re blaming Love Island), minimalist styles are back. Strapless swimsuits and bikinis are sleek and chic. Mix and match block colour separates for a sporty look or make a style statement with a printed two-piece.

RING DETAILS

Bring vintage glam to your poolside look with a ring-detail bikini or bathing suit. Tap into the Seventies trend with paisley or marble print, or go au naturel in caramel and coffee tones.

ONE SHOULDER

Asymmetrical designs combined with cut-out detailing make for one of the sexiest swimwear trends of the year – and it’s a look celebs and fashion influencers are loving. Go for Grecian glam with a white one-shoulder bikini or jazz it up with a colourful print.

This summer’s

sunglasses trends

Update your look with these fashionable frames, says Katie Wright.

The quintessential summer accessory, sunglasses are the perfect finishing touch for any outfit – whether you’re hanging out at home or jetting off on holiday.

When it comes to eyewear, trends move fast, so what frames are in fashion this season?

As we head towards hotter days, these are the five key sunglasses trends to know about…

OVERSIZED FRAMES

The coolest way to rock oversized sunnies this season is with sleek square frames, as seen at designer brands such as Celine and Prada. Opt for black or white opaque frames for an understatedluxe look or choose jewel tones to bring a Seventies glam feel.

SPORTY

Trendsetter Kim Kardashian now favours sporty sunglasses to top off her looks. Throw it back to the Nineties and Noughties with narrow, wraparound sunnies with retro denim or tailored outfits.

NARROW FRAMES

As seen recently on the likes of Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner, narrow rectangular sunglasses are a big hit with celebs and models at the moment. These eyebrow-revealing frames are a subtle way to nod to the Nineties and a stylish option if you don’t suit oversized square styles.

WHITE FRAMES

In contrast to classic black, this season’s white sunglasses are all about making a strong style statement. From narrow Nineties-inspired styles to big oval frames, go bold with your monochrome sunnies.

TORTOISESHELL

Loving the spring/summer Seventies trend?

Then you need a pair of tortoiseshell sunglasses to complete your look. Channel disco-glam with super-sized frames in natural tones, or add a pop of pink.

Face the Sun

‘Use sunscreen every day’ is the ultimate skincare commandment. Dermatologists and beauty buffs alike agree that protecting your face from harmful UV rays – while simultaneously preventing wrinkles – should be a priority for everyone.

“Skin is the body’s first line of defence from everyday external aggressors which damage your skin such as UV rays,” says Prof Christian Aldridge, consultant dermatologist for LifeJacket Skin Protection.

“The damage from these can have cosmetic, physical and long-term health consequences. At best, it can age your skin and cause you discomfort but at worst, can give you a skin disease you really don’t want.”

That’s why daily protection of your skin is critical, particularly on those areas that are exposed to the sun regularly, such as your face. But in spite of all the warnings we receive, the message isn’t getting through to everyone.

A new survey from LifeJacket and Melanoma UK found that 10% of respondents rarely use SPF, while one in 20 says they never use it.

To make it more likely you’ll stick to a daily habit, finding a product you love can be a huge help – attempting to rub a thick, chalky cream into your skin is not the answer.

The good news is, facial sunblocks have come a long way, and there’s a whole new batch of lightweight but effective lotions, serums and gels that are a delight to use – and many of them are under the £20 mark.

“To adequately protect your face, I recommend 5ml (about a teaspoon) of SPF of at least 30 every day,” says Aldridge.

“Especially during the months of April to September, to ensure long-term skin protection. Application should be repeated if outside for long periods or undertaking exercising in the light.”

Add one of these innovative face creams to your routine for everyday protection.

OCCASIONWEAR TRENDS FOR WEDDING SEASON

Go bold with bright hues and sparkly accessories, says Katie Wright.

and blazer dresses, make sure yours is in a statement shade or bold print.

Ruffles

Wedding season is almost here, and with a surplus of ceremonies taking place due to the continuing pandemic backlog, you might have quite a few celebrations to attend. That means you’ll need outfits – and what’s more fun than getting dolled up for a special occasion? When it comes to occasionwear, spring/summer is all about joyous colour and texture – perfect for partying from day to night. From dresses and suits to shoes and bags, these are the trends every wedding guest needs to know about…

Slip dresses

The Nineties classic – a favourite of Kate Moss during her supermodel heyday – made a comeback on the SS23 catwalks as part of the boudoir dressing trend. Maxi and midi slip dresses in pastel and sunset shades are more wedding-friendly than the supershort lace-edged kind – they’re also a chic option for bridesmaids.

Retro florals

Flower power never goes out of style, and this season is all about hippie-inspired prints in the brightest hues. Look for retro detailing too – think halter necks, balloon sleeves and babydoll silhouettes.

Statement suits

Two-piece tailoring is what the coolest guests will be rocking this wedding season – and we don’t just mean the guys. From the timeless jacket and trousers combo to short suits

As seen on the catwalks at Richard Quinn, Molly Goddard and Chanel, ruffles are big news –literally – this season, with voluminous tulle and feathers galore. Go all-out with oodles of 3D froth or keep it simple with some soft, flowing

Embellished heels

Accessorise your statement suit or frill-tastic frock with a pair of blingy heels. Wear a pastel dress with bejewelled courts in a contrasting tone or add metallic sandals to a tailored look –these embellished beauties will give you lots of mileage throughout spring and summer.

Beaded bags

Complete your look with a vintageinspired beaded clutch bag. Decorated with intricate pearls and sequins, these pretty purses are just big enough to hold all your wedding day essentials.

As the weather starts to (slowly) warm up, it’s time to rethink your beauty routine. When temperatures change and the sun shines a bit more consistently, the same products you used in winter won’t be quite as effective. Your hair and skin will have different needs – and these are the changes you should make to accommodate this…

WEAR BROAD-SPECTRUM SPF

You should be doing this all year round, but slapping on the SPF becomes even more crucial as the weather warms up and we see what Dr Carlos Charles, 4.5.6 Skin chief medical officer and co-founder, describes as “increased daily ambient outdoor ultraviolet light”. He recommends adding sun protection into your routine as early as spring – even if it doesn’t feel that warm. “In my patients with a more fair complexion I’ll start to see mild sunburns and an uptick in sun spots known as solar lentigines in the early spring months,” Charles says. “In patients with darker melanin-rich skin tones I’ll begin to see exacerbations of the pigmentary disorder known as melasma, as well as more intense examples of various types of hyperpigmentation.” Charles – who has spent most of his career treating melanin-rich skin – adds: “The best way to mitigate the hyperpigmentation is through the strict daily use of a broad spectrum sunscreen that is at least SPF 30.”

Beauty changes to make for the summer

COMBAT INCREASED OIL PRODUCTION

“In the warmer weather when temperatures and humidity rise, our sebaceous glands tend to overproduce sebum to keep skin hydrated,” explains Charles. “Even those who have normal skin may find their complexion becomes more oily or greasy. This is true across skin tones, but particularly for those with darker skin.” However, oilier skin doesn’t mean you should start triplecleansing. “One of the most common mistakes I see patients make when their skin gets oily is overcleansing to remove the excess oil. Unfortunately, this creates the opposite effect, as it can send the sebaceous glands into overdrive, producing more sebum,” says Charles. Instead, he recommends using “gentle and non-stripping” cleansers and adopting ingredients that will combat the increased oil production, such as salicylic acid.

BOOST THE MOISTURE IN YOUR SKIN

Charles continues: “Another mistake I see patients make when their skin gets oily is skipping their moisturiser – or worse SPF – for fear of looking shinier. “It’s always important to keep skin wellnourished and hydrated so that sebaceous glands don’t overcompensate.” Equally, Dr Preema Vig at Dr Preema London recommends using products with ingredients that will boost your skin’s

moisture, including hyaluronic acid, ceramides, glycerin and squalane.

GIVE YOUR SCALP SOME LOVE

Skincare doesn’t stop at your face. “In the summer months, our scalp can often be neglected and suffer – whether that be from sun exposure and sweating to tying the hair in restrictive, high-stress ponytails due to the heat,” says Munir Somji at DrMedispa. “These hairstyles, alongside heat damage from the sun, can cause hair to lose volume and break easily.” That’s why it’s important to give your scalp some love during the warmer months – by wearing looser ponytails, using targeted treatments or even giving yourself a scalp massage.

DON’T FORGET YOUR EYE AREA

“Skin can become red and inflamed during the summer months, caused by blockage and inflammation of your sweat ducts,”

says aesthetic oculoplastic surgeon Sabrina Shah-Desai. “Don’t forget to treat your eye area. When it comes to the delicate eye area, think about investing in some slightly larger sunglasses for extra protection, alongside a product to treat any pigmentation and protect.”

PROTECT YOUR HAIR, TOO

It’s not just your skin that needs SPF –your hair could benefit from it too when the sun starts shining. “Warmer weather can cause your hair to become dry, frizzy and more prone to breakage due to increased exposure to UV rays, humidity and sweat,” says GHD UK ambassador and celebrity hair stylist Samantha Cusick. “The sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation can damage the proteins in your hair, which can lead to dryness, brittleness, and breakage. Additionally, sun exposure can also cause your hair colour to fade and lose its vibrancy.” The key to protecting your hair from the sun’s rays? Cusick recommends “wearing a hat or using a hair product that contains SPF”.

BATTLE THE FRIZZ

“Humidity can cause hair to absorb moisture from the air, which can lead to swelling and frizz. This is because hair is made up of keratin proteins, which can change shape when exposed to water. Additionally, the moisture can disrupt the hydrogen bonds in hair, leading to frizz,” Cusick explains. To beat the frizz, opt for anti-frizz products and always use heat protectant – and Cusick recommends using a tool such as the GHD styler that goes up to 185 degrees: “The optimum temperature to style hair,” she says.

The Multi-Ceramide Powered Skincare Boosting The Skin’s Natural Barrier Function

Born out of real need, Darkkins is a Health Visitor founded clean and cruelty free skincare brand that creates products to effectively repair and maintain the skins natural barrier.

In the UK alone, studies show that 1in 10 Adults and 1 in 5 Children are affected by some form of dryness of the skin resulting in the weakening of the skins natural barrier.

As s student Health Visitor, Jocelyn, our founder, quickly observed that dry skin and eczema related questions were one of the top questions families asked when they attended clinic.

They would normally talk about their frustration of not finding non- steroidal products that really worked for them. Wondering why there were so many products on the market and yet these families needs were not met, Jocelyn sought to fill the gap in the skincare market..

Many years on, after extensive research and working with a British Cosmetic Chemist, the Darkkins Intense Moisturising Body Cream was birthed.

At Darkkins, we are guided by using premium scientifically proven ingredients that Repair, Soothe and Maintain the skin’s natural barrier AND eliminate ones that cause potential irritation to the skin such as fragrance, dyes, petrochemicals, sulphates etc

As one ages and through sun damage, together with skin conditions, the quality and quantity of ceramides reduce. This can lead to a skin barrier, causing dry, rough skin, wrinkles, redness, irritation and dehydration.

Ceramides in skincare help seal in moisture, protect the skin from external hazards, strengthen your skin’s barrier and improve hydration. This results in smoother and firmer skin, reduced fine lines and wrinkles, relieve dry skin, soothe and ease irritation. For all skin types, best for Sensitive, Dry, Mature or Eczema prone skin.

‘’Our mission at Darkkins is to create effective skincare using scientifically proven ingredients that repair and boosts the skin’s natural barrier’’. darkkins.com

Milan Trend Report 2023

Illuminating the streets, showrooms, salons, patios, parlours and palazzos of Italy’s style capital, Milan’s inimitable furniture fair Salone del Mobile got its glorious groove on last month, as the interiors glitterati from around the globe descended. With the air humming with anticipation and energy, there were unveilings at every turn as the industry’s most luxury brands presented pieces that will come to define the next interiors season.

Our homes have come a long way since we were last here. Namely, we spent 2022 throwing the doors open and letting nature in, from every bucolic colour to organic shapes and new found-in-nature materials, creating a soothing, sometimes ethereal, mood. This year? Things are ramping up. Statement colour is here, bringing with it doses of joy, happiness and hopefulness. Textures are growing bolder, adding playful twists to elegant pieces, and shapes have taken a turn for the whimsical. Our homes are becoming places which make us smile – while remaining stunningly beautiful and carefully considered, of course. It’s an elusive balance, but one which is merged into

individual designs to make curation all the easier and more enjoyable.

TEXTURES

CHUNKY BOUCLE

There is boucle and then there’s heavy, oversized, statement boucle, and it was big, brazen bumps that dominated Salone del Mobile 2023’s upholstery. A way to give life to neutral shades and add extra oomph to colours, bold boucle says, ‘Here’s where the funs at,’ inviting hands to nestle in and explore. With the larger looped pieces in the fabric creating a thicker texture and deeper shadows, the oversized boucle gives a light-hearted wink to whatever it’s covering, be it framed with an exquisite piece of crafted walnut or topped with bright, furry cushions.

RIDGES

Creating subtle yet characterful decoration, ridged markings and upholstery hit Salone hard, with furniture and accessories alike adorned with subtle stripes cut into solid materials and tailored onto the soft. Instantly adding a three-dimensional

effect and forming a layer of shadows, ridges pull the eyes into them, highlighting the contrast they create and inviting you to re-examine their base material. The overall effect is one of craft and delicacy, the lines emerging gradually to form a pattern that’s simple and striking.

TEXTURED GLASS

The ambience this year is hazy, dreamlike and illusory as textured glass takes over, casting beautiful, almost watery, shadows which transform a room into something ethereal and otherworldly. From textures embodying the organic to gentle patterns, in furniture, large textured glass slabs create the illusion of water frozen mid-movement, while lighting is embracing ever-so distorted glass shades, throwing a layer of mystery over their surroundings come nightfall.

COLOURS

PRIMARY TONES

At the top of the brightness scale this year are vivid, primary tones as interior design trends for 2023 take a turn for the kaleidoscopic. Playful and nostalgic, these happy shades remind us of our youths and bring intense splashes of energy inside. Introduction on simplistic designs big and small which let the colour itself create impactful bursts of joy and positivity.

MEDITERRANEAN TONES

Sunkissed, Mediterranean, earthy tones are where it’s at for colour that makes a statement without being too dazzling. Green has been the darling of the interiors world for several seasons as we’ve sought to become more grounded, and this year a rich olive has emerged as the trending tone. Falling somewhere between neutral and bold, it speaks not only of nature but of tempting warmer climes and endless lazy days. Sun-baked terracotta red also dominated, the brick-like tone conjuring even more tranquil images of tiled roofs disappearing into the horizon. And relax.

DUSKY

PINK

For something colourful as well as calming, it’s dusky pink all the way. Suspended between pink and grey, this isn’t a sickly, classically pretty tone, but rather a dash of sweetness to top off a room. Used on accent pieces: a chair here, a cushion there, maybe the odd sofa – the hazy shade creates a slightly dreamlike feel, a sense of whimsy that’s at once delicate and daring.

TAN UPHOLSTERY

Smooth, buttery soft, tan leather is all we’ll be sitting on this year. A tempting toffee tone took over sofas, chairs and upholstery in general across Salone, its laid-back vibe nodding towards the 70s and drawing attention to the beauty of shapes, tailoring and material combinations. With more punch than beige, think of it as an easy-yetstatement neutral, its milky, flat white-esque shade relaxed as well as elegant.

We look forward to welcoming these fresh Milanese trends – and more! – to our curated collection of designer greats both online and at our 25’000 sq ft luxury lifestyle showroom in Greater London. Want to get ahead of the crowd? Contact our Design Team to start your design journey, today.

PERFECTLY BRITISH NAUTICAL HOMEWARE FROM DESIGNER VICTORIA EGGS

Ideal for beachy picnics, alfresco summer dining, and bringing a slice of seaside charm into homes up and down the country, Victoria Eggs’ nautical collection is inspired by time spent along Britain’s coastlines.

The collection highlights a nostalgic and whimsical view of the seaside serving as a reminder of everything you love about holidays in the UK. The motif includes deck chairs, sticks of rock, beach huts, ice creams and even a resident sea gull! What could be more British?

As with all of Victoria’s other collections, each item is hand-crafted in the UK. The Fine Bone China ceramics are made from the finest Cornish clay, and the textiles are printed onto unbleached cotton using plant dyes to ensure that they’re

planet-friendly.

The collection includes a mug, tea towel, coasters, magnets, oven glove, pot grab, apron, egg cup, ½ pint jug, cosmetic bag, and two canvas bags.

Hand-drawn homeware by award-winning British designer Victoria Eggs, made in the UK.

Victoria Eggs homeware is born from Great-British moments; the nostalgic whiff of salt and vinegar-y chips at the seaside, quirky colloquialisms, our Royal family, London. We’re as British as the cuppa. In fact we’ve a day dedicated to celebrating our favourite brew. #teatuesday

All our products are hand-illustrated by Victoria, and lovingly made in the UK. Our mugs (tea tastes better in a Victoria Eggs Mug BTW), are hand-crafted and decorated in Staffordshire, using traditionally mined Cornish Clay. And our textiles come from Lincolnshire, printed with waterbased ink (which has virtually no impact on the environment).

“All my designs are snapshots of special moments in time we wish to cherish forever and gift to those we love most.”

The Colours of Hampstead Heath

Taking inspiration from the colours and style of the beautiful North London property found just a short walk from Hampstead Heath, the client’s brief was to design a space that was a balance between a practical living and cooking space whilst creating a visually stunning design. The team in the Hampstead Poggenpohl Studio set about with the aim to create a kitchen that wasn’t something you see every day, but whilst doing so, had to ensure the design didn’t sacrifice functionality.

The materials used needed to be sympathetic to the existing house and features, whilst remaining within a specific colour palette – which was fairly unique. The idea of using muted greens and browns came in quite early in the project as did the use of Poggenpohl’s Champagne Aluminium door front which can be seen on the tall housings. This finish paired naturally with the Bronze Anthracite textured door which has been used in both a handle-less and handled capacity on the sink run and the island.

The different heights and depths of the cabinets throughout the space, help to create interest around the kitchen and the use of the double stacked furniture that is installed tight to the ceiling with the wall units beneath, again bridges the gap between looking good and having a practical use and purpose.

The +Modo element of the island – now a recognised and often requested design synonymous with the brand - was a feature requested by the client from the very beginning, and had to be included. Due to the layout of the kitchen, the island had to be in an L-shape to make the most of the space, which meant utilising the internal edge for the client’s breakfast bar. In order to keep the worktop as visually clear as possible,

this breakfast bar is set to the bottom edge of the worksurface and inset within the worktops. These sorts of top end design techniques really sets this space apart and warrants the price tag associated with a Poggenpohl kitchen.

The material used is Poggenpohl’s Light Smoked Oak which is mirrored on the pull-out open trays and inside the +Stage pocket doors. In order to achieve a thicker effect on the breakfast bar, rather than just simply installing two panels on top of one another, there is a custom-made bronze panel inset between them, which is also used on the open shelves on the panelled wall, again helping to tie the space together through the use of mirroring materials and design elements. The client’s brief for the worktops was to ensure that they were heat resistant allowing her to place items from the oven directly onto the worksurfaces, whilst also maintaining the colour palette and having to have a marble-like finish. The composite ‘Dekton’ in Taga was used as it hit every item on the client’s wishlist, it sits within the colour palette, allows for a practical kitchen whilst also looking stunning with all the characteristics of natural stone.

Overall, this kitchen is a triumph of practicality and design; both coming together seamlessly to create something new. A space that allows for comfortable family evenings cooking together, whilst also being a visually stunning part of the house – and perfect for entertaining too! SEVENOAKS HOUSE

comfort benefits of passive solar heating. Further to this, a sky lounge and external roof terrace was added to the third storey of the construction to enable and encourage quieter moments surrounded by nature.

Situated in the idyllic and highly desirable town of Sevenoaks, this five-bed replacement dwelling provided our design studio with a unique canvas on which to build.

Our replacement dwelling, designed closely with our client’s needs and preferences in mind, is a continuation of the local country home design philosophy, but with a distinctive, modern approach.

THE PROPOSAL

The metropolitan greenbelt is a cherished location and a welcome break from the claustrophobia of London’s urban landscape. When designing this house, we wanted the architecture to complement the greenery around it, rather than overpower and dominate the land. Working within the rules and regulations of the greenbelt, we proposed a home that adds value to the local area, whilst affecting the local environment as little as possible.

In our build proposal, the building is described as a ‘contemporary replacement dwelling providing a very high-quality design, suitable for modern living standards as well as capitalizing on the nature of the site.’

To achieve our proposed goals, we first changed the orientation of the home. This change has compounding benefits; not only does this rotation allow the home owners to enjoy the natural beauty of the local woodland, but also the economic and

The bottom floor of the building is a partial basement. To reduce the footprint of the construction and ensure that this new abode doesn’t break the natural shape of the surrounding land, we designed the bottom floor in such a way that it is built into the landscape itself. To add, the roof was also designed to be flat, to ensure that the silhouette of the house is as inoffensive as possible.

A UNIQUE CHARACTER AND A PERFECT STAGE FOR UNFORGETTABLE MOMENTS.

This latest project from our architectural design studio has been an exercise in reinterpreting traditional architecture and bringing it to the new millennium. The material palette chosen for this project is one made primarily of marble and limestone. These natural materials echo the stately homes dotted nearby in style and longevity.

The building in its entirety is filled with character and provides the perfect backdrop for our client’s day-to-day lives. The open-plan layout accompanied by the skybox, infinity pool and frequent placement of windows immerses the building into nature as one continuous, unobtrusive structure, without sacrificing the privacy of its inhabitants. Many of the rooms were tailored with privacy as a focus. The bedrooms, en-suites, cinema and music room allow for total privacy from the outside world if wanted.

Our design studio worked hard to produce an end result that is both versatile and breathtakingly beautiful. This new home is a wonderful addition to Sevenoaks and will accompany the silhouette of this picturesque landscape for many years to come.
