rocket Hall offers two 18-hole Championship courses on the Estate, which are both quintessentially British in design but at the same time, each course offers a completely different challenge for golfers of all abilities. The stunning Brocket Hall offers a picturesque backdrop to every round, particularly on our iconic 18th hole on the Melbourne course as the Hall overlooks the final green. The par 72 Melbourne Course was opened in June 1992, with the design of the course a product of the encyclopaedic knowledge that former Ryder Cup golfers Peter Alliss and Clive Clark possess. Our experiences of gardens have changed over time, from the formal to the more natural. The Gardens of Knebworth House include both formal and informal areas, which blend to create a harmonious experience for our visitors. The layout of the Garden by Sir Edwin Lutyens into ‘garden rooms’ invites discovery and exploration. The Gardens team maintain the 28 acres of Garden to provide interest and enjoyment for the thousands of visitors who come to Knebworth throughout the open season. This Easter, Willows Activity Farm in St Albans has a double yolked programme of egg-cellent wholesome fun waiting for visitors! From 19 – 28 March, families can meet the Easter Bunny at Willows Easter Eggstravaganza, where she’ll be teaching her famous “Bunny Hop” dance to the children. Visitors should also ‘ch-egg out’ the Willows Easter Panto, fluffy bunnies and chicks in the Farmyard and the famous Willows Easter Egg Hunt in the Willows Garden with chocolate treats for kids. H&M is delighted to announce the opening of a brand new store in Welwyn Garden City on Thursday 24 March. Covering 1,650sqm of shop floor space, the new store will employ over 20 members of staff and will feature ladieswear, menswear, kidswear and teens concept Divided.

Christopher Ward Ltd A new world of luxury watchmaking.
A
ny British company exporting to over 100 countries is clearly a success in its sector; but to do that in the luxury watch market – challenging the entrenched dominance of the major Swiss brands - is a truly outstanding achievement. Based in Maidenhead, Berkshire, luxury watch brand Christopher Ward wears its British heritage lightly but sincerely on its wrist. The in-house design team express a range of inspirations taken from our landscapes, heritage and culture – from the rolling beauty of the Malvern Hills to the cockpit of the Supermarine Spitfire. The brand’s story began in 2004 with three men in a boat. Sharing a leisurely cruise on the Thames, friends Chris Ward, Mike France and Peter Ellis hit upon the luxury watch market as the ideal sector for a quiet revolution. Their early operations took place in a converted chicken shed and, after a year and much hard work, they proudly launched their first models: the classic Malvern C3 and C5. These designs, inspired by the quintessential English beauty of the Malvern Hills, were launched to widespread acclaim – and some degree of astonishment that such a small British brand could achieve such world-class quality. In the decade since those launches Christopher Ward has developed a stylish portfolio of watches for men and women in a diverse range of styles – from classic Dress pieces to robust Dive/Sports watches and dynamic expressions of Motoring and Aviation heritage, including a truly stunning selection of Limited Edition watches. The company’s defining strapline is ‘Swiss movement, English heart.’; expressing the emphasis on blending English spirit and aesthetics with the quality and reliability of Swiss movements – all at prices unprecedented in the luxury watch market. Combining the UK in-house design team with Swiss specialist workshops in Biel, Switzerland, to guarantee “Swiss Made” quality, Christopher Ward give watch enthusiasts access to levels of technical quality previously limited to the most elite, and expensive brands in the world. In its relatively short history, this independent, industry-disrupting British brand has certainly made its mark on the Swiss giants! For instance, 2014 saw the launch of Christopher Ward’s in-house movement, Calibre SH21; a stunning achievement in both the technical challenge and in the capability shown by a relatively small and young brand to create its own movement to power its watches. The CEO of one the world’s leading Swiss watch brands was 16 MARCH 2016
so startled by the launch that he exclaimed, “What gives you the licence to do that?!” The brand continues to startle the watch industry, not least in its careful blending of innovation in both design and technical achievement in its watches. Recent launches include the C9 Moonphase, celebrating both the natural beauty of the moon and the human craftsmanship of the brand’s master watchmaker, Johannes Jahnke, in creating the innovative “Calibre JJ04” that drives the watch with astonishing accuracy (its moonphase function won’t need adjusting for 128 years). The first launch of 2016 saw the new C5 Malvern Slimline Square proudly maintain Christopher Ward’s classic design heritage while also conveying an unmistakably contemporary style in this rare but elegant foray into the word of square watches (a perhaps surprisingly intense topic of debate among watch aficionados!). Most recently, the company’s iconic – and best-selling - Trident Collection of Dive watches has been further enhanced by the arrival of the C60 Trident Chronograph Pro 600; a model technically advanced enough to thrive at 600 metres below the waves, yet stylish enough to grace a tailored shirt cuff in the boardroom. This versatility and ability to continually innovate, improve and surprise has made Christopher Ward a credible global contender in an incredibly challenging market. From small beginnings in the Malvern Hills to reaching for the moon and exporting across the world: Christopher Ward has taken a very British journey of adventure, creativity and sheer determination to succeed.

detailing ‘reviving and maintaining to perfection’ Lee Mitchell, managing director of Extreme Detailing Ltd in Hatfield discusses this phenomenon that is sweeping across the uk
I
n the UK we have some of the most knowledgeable detailers in the world coming only second to the USA, but the industry is still not general knowledge. We have one of the harshest environments for car paintwork, the sun is only part of the problem. With air borne contaminants, industrial fallout and natural pollutants all settle on the car combined with moisture and heat, you have a catalyst that slowly damages the finish of the car. This on top of water spots, bird droppings and tree sap compound the problems making it challenging to keep the paintwork perfect. Washing a car can be detrimental - sponges and chamois are certainly out of the question. You need to be sympathetic to the materials as harsh chemicals corrode the brakes, and reused sponges/chamois put fine marks in to the paint dulling it over time. Interiors need regular treatments including the trim keeping that natural finish without unsightly shine and staining. The car needs to be brought up to a high standard, protected and maintained. As a detailer we have an understanding of the materials used in the car production and how best to restore and keep them looking their best getting the cars paintwork to ‘pop’. A detailer can make the car look so much better
20 MARCH 2016
giving paintwork great depth of colour, glass becoming optically perfect and trim looking entirely unblemished. Add to this protection developed specifically for each material used and the vehicle becomes so much easier to maintain and stays looking great for years to come, it is cake and eat it! Any knowledgeable detailer will be able to restore whether its the whale tale on a classic Porsche that’s gone grey and blotchy, or the dash on a classic Ferrari that looking too shiny, all can be fixed by an experienced detailer. When it comes to an auto detailer, the secret is in the name. Every last ‘detail’ is considered when you use a service, from cleaning the inside of rims to removing the car’s badges to polish and protect. Detailers can spend between 3 and 12 hours correcting and enhancing a car’s paintwork – removing any marks and swirls that exist. Once cleaning, polishing and prep is complete detailers use a range of products to protect the cars from the elements such as Gtechniq’s Crystal Serum which is guaranteed last for at least 7 years, providing high gloss levels and making a car a dream to maintain. While detailing may not be for everyone, it is the best way to ensure one of your biggest assets maintains as much value as possible during its life span – if your car looks good when you sell it on, then you will reap the benefits of this.

Contemporary tailoring
& timeless classics W ith the clocks going forward and the evenings become lighter, D.Copperfield is marking the new Spring season with lots of new changes of our own, having spent much of the last year traveling to source some of the best quality brands from the UK and around the world. We’re offering a strong British collection of new brands; from simple, timeless classics such as Nottingham-based Sunspel to sleek, contemporary tailoring from Savile Row’s Richard James. Founded in the 1800s, Sunspel has long been an innovator in basic products – bringing the boxer short to the UK and creating the now famous Riviera polo, designed especially for Daniel Craig as James Bond in Casino Royale. In fact, every t-shirt he wears in the film is by Sunspel, chosen by award-winning costume designer Lindy Hemming “because they are classic, timeless and beautifully made.” A comparative newcomer, having been established in 1992, Richard James has quickly established a reputation for itself as a leading luxury brand that has set the standard for contemporary tailoring and menswear. The first of the ‘New Establishment’ tailors on Savile Row, Richard James is proud to have contributed to revitalising what has long been acknowledged as the world centre for tailoring, with its bold, progressive take on the timeless and traditional. From their creaseless navy business suit for everyday use to their beautiful vibrant blues – perfect for any summer wedding you will be attending this year – we are delighted to have such a luxury brand in our collection; one that really has to be seen first-hand to be fully appreciated. Fitting in the space between the formal business attire

of Richard James and the timeless quality of Sunspel is another big British player in the world of modern menswear; Oliver Spencer, who we are very proud to be launching for our first season. From humble roots as a stall seller on Portobello market, Oliver moved on to become a self-taught tailor, producing designs for Favourbrook. Oli decided that formal wear was too restricting and he wanted to produce something new: a range of clothing with all the quality and craft of premium tailoring, but with a relaxed modern style. On the premise that quality needn’t mean formality and casual needn’t mean careless, in 2002 he started the brand Oliver Spencer. It’s not just the Brits that have impressed us on our scouting journeys…there’s amazing product available all around the globe and we are lucky to be one of only a few select UK stockists of Japanese label Nanamica. Nanamica was established in 2003 by Eiichiro Homma; a man with over two decades of history in menswear and garment technology, and also the founder of the exclusive Japanese North Face Purple label. Famed for using tasteful tech fabrics such as goretex and cordura, Nanamica are a perfect all weather brand…which makes them ideal for the English summer! Brickendon Grange
Golf Club L
ife was altogether more innocent and straightforward in the 1960’s, a time when golf clubs were overflowing with members and golfers such as Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player became household names. It was against this backdrop the C.K Cotton designed Brickendon Grange golf course was unveiled. The land on which the club now stands was once part of the Manor of Brickendonbury built as a family home in 1825 for the Trotter family. The mansion known as The Grange, and now the club house, was built in 1859. Many of the building’s original features still stand today. Today we have a fantastic course and club house, the star attraction of the course is the signature hole the ‘Ace of Herts’ which is not only one of the best holes in Hertfordshire but one of the best holes to be played in the south of England. The club house is only a short walk from the 18th green, so regardless of your score you won’t have far to go to find refreshments afterwards in our well stocked bar. We have three main function rooms all suited for different needs. The main golfers lounge is great for a large party or a social drink after your round, the patio outside the lounge overlooks the 18th green and the setting sun, which makes it a perfect spot for a lazy summer’s evening drink. Our second function room is called ‘Nobles’ named after one of the founder members of the club, this room is great for smaller parties and dinners. The final function room is the ‘Oak’ dining room, this is a smaller room ideal for private dinner parties. All the rooms are available for hire to members and visitors alike. A wide range of quality menus are available from our chef.

Botox Myths ! d e
The patient furrowed her brows, clearly uneasy. “Botox? Really? I’m not sure…”
t s bu
T
he irony was that the more concerned she got, the more clearly I could see how treatment with botulinum toxin (aka Botox) would benefit her. The frown lines between her eyebrows were deep, and so when she frowned, she looked unnecessarily severe. Botox, which relaxes the muscles that cause facial creases and wrinkles, would soften her look considerably. It is easily one of the top 5 cosmetic procedures in the world, used both by men and women to get rid of wrinkles and lines. It also has over 20 medical applications from preventing migraines to stopping excessive teeth grinding. Yet it is also one of the most misunderstood, with several myths persisting despite being completely untrue. Let me set the record straight on three of the most common ones I hear.
1. MYTH: Botox makes you look frozen and unnatural. You end up looking like a plastic mannequin…
This usually happens when patients are given very large doses meant to last six months or longer. It’s not the approach we generally take here at Riverbanks. The aim with Botox is to soften lines, making you look younger, smoother and more relaxed – not to stop your face from moving. The key is to use small amounts of Botox relatively often. When you give subtle doses which last three or four months, the result will be completely natural. You will still be able to express surprise and smile (…in fact, you’ll do so often, because you’ll look so great!), and no one will be able to guess that you have had any work done.
2. MYTH: It hurts to get Botox. Hardly: You will experience far more pain plucking your eyebrows.
That’s even truer for patients here at Riverbanks. The smaller the needle, the better it is tolerated. Over the past year, we’ve started using a new type of needle which is just 1/10 the size of a blood test needle. To the best of my knowledge we are the only clinic in the UK to use them. They are so effective that often, patients ask me when I’m going to treat a certain area, and are shocked to hear I’ve already finished it. They never even noticed!
48 MARCH 2016
3. MYTH: When you stop using Botox, your wrinkles look worse than before. If you’ve only had one or two Botox treatments, your skin will revert to its previous condition a few weeks after the Botox has worn out. If you have been using Botox longterm, your wrinkles will start reappearing over three-to-six months. More importantly, you will look healthier and smoother than before your started the Botox. There is no evidence whatsoever that they will look worse than before you started. More likely, people who have become used to having smooth, wrinkle-free faces have simply forgotten what they looked like beforehand…. : -) Any Botox questions of your own? Just email me on ravi.jain@riverbanksclinic.co.uk and I’ll get back to you! THE DETAILS For more information visit my informative website www.riverbanksclinic.co.uk and subscribe to my email list. 7 spring beauty trends to try now It’s rare that this happens, but almost every beauty trend that surfaced from the spring/summer fashion shows was summed up by the models at Marc Jacobs. By Katie Wright, Press Association
D
amp, dishevelled hair pinned precariously with a barrette; a hint of blue in the corner of the eye; purposely clumpy mascara and ‘bitten’ lips - it was all there. Sounds kind of a mess, though, doesn’t it? But, examined in isolation, there were some very appealing elements at work on Jacobs’ mussed-up maidens, and techniques that you can - and should - try at home. This season, unleash your rebellious streak and run wild with pretty-punk abandon...
1. GET THE BLUES The Lancome Anthony Vaccarello Hypnose Eyeshadow Palette in Blue Mania, available from lancome.co.uk
Every season has a dominant colour, this time around make-up artists made a beeline for blue, mainly on the eyes. Missoni’s models had opaque cyan eyelids and Issey Miyake’s were daubed with aquatic splatters. Jonathan Saunders opted for smudged Yves Klein eyeliner, while at Chanel an eye mask of powdery shadow was buffed on. TRY IT NOW: Lancome Anthony Vaccarello Hypnose Eyeshadow Palette in Blue Mania, £38, offers a trio of blue hues to play with (www.lancome.co.uk).
2. ALL DOLLED UP
Wide-eyed porcelain dolls were the inspiration for many a beauty look, but these dolls weren’t smiling. Ice-blue lashes made Mary Katrantzou’s models look frozen, 50 MARCH 2016
while at Marni, the hyper-extended falsies were meant to emulate “a girl who went too far with eyelash extensions”, according to make-up artist Tom Pecheux. The deranged doll manifested elsewhere, with tons of under-eye smudge paired with the palest of pink lips. TRY IT NOW: Start with a couple of coats of MAC Haute & Naughty Too Black Lash, £19, then add a couple more (www.maccosmetics.co.uk).
3. HERE COMES THE BRAID
Forget pigtails and fishtails, the spring catwalks took braiding to a whole new level. At Kristian Aadnevik, stylist Antonio Corral Calero designed an elaborate but artfully undone halfupdo inspired by a “wild and rural” garden; Herve Leger’s girls were adorned with long French plaits that started at one temple, while at Roksanda, hair was tightly braided then loosened to give a soft-focus crimped effect. TRY IT NOW: Grip and volume are essential to master a catwalk-worthy braid, so start with Moroccanoil Root Boost, £18.85 (FeelUnique.com).
4. PARTY LIKE IT’S 1990
It looks like we’ve reached Peak Nineties in terms of fashion, and make-up artists have followed suit, with Tom Pecheux declaring “a supermodel from the Nineties” his muse at Moschino, and grunge inspiring the barefaced look at Emilio Pucci. That means heavy lipliner, brown lipstick, big brows and gleaming skin all round. TRY IT NOW: Use MAC Lip Pencil in Oak, £12.50, alone or with a slick of clear gloss on top (www.maccosmetics.co.uk).

5. WINE STAINS
With all those doe-eyed dolls around, lips mostly took a backseat in the make-up department this season, but there were a handful of notable exceptions. Anna Sui, Givenchy and Burberry all showed gorgeously dense burgundy pouts, chiming with that going-against-the-grain spring spirit. H EALTH & BEAUTY HEALTH
Prostate health is something all men should be aware of
Prostate Health
In recognition of prostate cancer awareness month Mr Jacques Roux, Consultant Urologist at Spire Harpenden, speaks to us about the importance of prostate health.
P
Mr Jacques Roux
52 MARCH 2016
rostate cancer has become the most common forms of male cancer. It is increasingly being talked about by those who value their health or the health of their partners. The time has come to be open about the prostate and associated health issues. I am heartened that more and more patients feel empowered to discuss with their GPs and ask for their prostate health to be evaluated. The prostate’s purpose is not only for reproduction but also forms an integral part of the urinary system. It is commonly described as a ‘male only’ walnut shaped and sized gland situated at the base of the bladder encasing the urethra. It is checked via the rectum and should be smooth, soft and not tender when examined. Most prostates will increase in size over time and as it gets larger it may cause a slowing down of the urinary stream. In extreme circumstances it causes the inability to pass urine which can be very painful. It can also become inflamed and cause significant discomfort around the perineum, penis and testes or when passing urine. Although prostate cancer predominantly effects older men (aged 65-79), around 25% of cases will occur in men younger than 65 years old. When caught early, prostate cancer can be treated very effectively. There are no specific symptoms that will indicate early prostate cancer and men can often present late. About 1 out of 8 men will develop prostate cancer. Having a father or brother with prostate cancer more than doubles the risk of developing prostate cancer. If you are at risk of getting prostate cancer, concerned or notice any difficulty in passing urine you should see your doctor.
Prostate health can easily be assessed by your GP by taking an appropriate history and doing a general examination which will include examining the prostate. A blood test called PSA (prostate specific antigen) can be performed before or a few days after the examination. Your doctor may also request a urine sample to check for an infection. If there is an irregularity on any of your initial tests you will be referred to an Urologist for a further assessment. The Urologist may ask you to perform a urine flow test and may do a scan to see how well your bladder empties. If indicated your Urologist will request further investigations. It does not mean that every man should be tested for prostate cancer. It is recommended that an individualised strategy for early detection depending on risk factors might be offered to a well informed man with at least 10-15 years of life expectancy. I am always happy to discuss prostate health with patients or health professionals either individually or in groups. Mr Jacques Roux is a Consultant Urologist at Spire Harpenden Hospital. Spire Harpenden is located in a peaceful setting well connected to transport routes, close to the M1 and A1(M) and Luton Airport. We welcome both insured patients, and those funding their own treatment. Guide to the
ultimate home improvement
T
ransforming your home with a bespoke pool house is a luxurious and life-enhancing choice. Designing and building a pool house is quite unlike any other building project and requires more than just finding a competent builder. Gary Taylor of Origin Leisure, the UK’s oldest established, multiaward winning pool company with more than 30 years’ experience, gives his advice on how to go about the ultimate home improvement.
building project is to have one single company responsible for all aspects of the design and build of your dream pool house. Of course it is possible to work with individual contractors but they will require more management by you, and the success of your project depends heavily on how well they work with each other. You don’t want to get caught in the middle of a blame game and have the headache of multiple people to deal with.
Specialist design
Bringing your dream to life has some distinct stages. At Origin Leisure we work through four key stages to create the perfect bespoke indoor pool. 1. Plan. This involves comprehensive feasibility studies and designs, from initial concepts, through to architectural drawings, and 3D CAD and colour visuals. This stage will also cover your planning applications. 2. Design. Our structural engineers and technical team work through the details of every design aspect, from specialist heating, dehumidification and ventilation design to the detail of the materials used, lighting, interior design and even energy source. Your pool house can also include green energy options, such as solar or air/ground source heat pumps
It’s important to understand that indoor pools require specialist design in three major areas: the pool chamber, the building structure and the management of the pool building environment (heating, dehumidification and ventilation). All of these specialisms should be integrated into a consolidated design from the start, to avoid disruptive, complicated and potentially costly alterations after your pool house has been built.
Achieving harmony
Look for a company that has all this specialist knowledge under one roof. The safest way to achieve harmony in your 2 MARCH 2016
The four steps to success
3. Build. From the moment the first spade hits the ground the entire construction will be project managed by the same team that you have been working with from the outset, right through to liaising with all the utilities companies on your behalf. 4. Maintain. Your pool house is for life, and we understand the maintenance this requires. We also look after this final stage of the process for many of our customers, from routine maintenance to emergency support, winter-proofing your building, and water health checks.
Peace of mind
It’s important you have peace of mind about your chosen pool company, so in addition to speaking to existing customers and seeing examples of work, here is a checklist of things to ensure your chosen pool company offers: • Over 30 years’ experience in indoor pool design and construction • 10 year warranty • Members of the Federation of Master Builders • Accredited members of SPATA (the Swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association). The SPATA awards are long established, and are considered the UK’s number one accolades for excellence in the swimming and leisure industry. This year alone Origin Leisure has won four awards for indoor and outdoor pools – two Golds, a Silver and a Bronze

Matt and Kerrie Smith chose Origin Leisure to create their indoor swimming pool after being inspired by the 2012 Olympics. They wanted to make a big improvement to
their country retreat that would suit the whole family. “My son has a friend who has an indoor pool and seeing the amount of flexibility it gave to the family was what swayed our decision”, explains Kerrie. “They could have a number of children over at the house, all happily playing in the pool all day. Our kids, aged six, ten and 13, are at the age now where kicking a ball outside isn’t enough to keep them entertained for hours on end.” As with most areas of the house, the children and the adults use the space differently. An indoor swimming pool is no exception - it had to be a space for the whole family to enjoy. “We needed it to tick all the boxes; entertain the children, whilst also
As with most areas of the house, the children and the adults use the space differently. An indoor swimming pool is no exception being a space where the adults could exercise.” Since making the decision to add an indoor swimming pool to their home, Matt and Kerrie haven’t been happier. “A swimming pool is the best thing we’ve done to the house and we wouldn’t think twice about doing it again. We knew we were going to enjoy it, but we absolutely love it. My advice to anyone thinking about investing in a swimming pool is not to think twice. I smile every time I look at the pool and it’s brought so much fun to our home.” THE DETAILS www.originleisure.com 01895 823366 MARCH 2016 3

From performing the practical duties of providing light and ventilation, through to setting the tone and character of a property, windows are an essential component of every home and therefore require careful thought. of choice for windows and doors follows the continuing decline in popularity of uPVC. The uniqueness of timber is much loved by British home owners and it provides levels of energy and acoustic performance that can make a real difference to your comfort. But they will also completely transform the appearance of your property adding to its kerb appeal and, importantly, its value. Assessing the thermal performance of your property is as important as checking that your boiler is working efficiently and that the building is well insulated. These are the common-sense routes to improving the thermal performance of your home and at the same time reducing energy consumption – which means keeping the pound in your pocket and capping your carbon footprint. Good for you and better for our planet.

Mumford & Wood make-toorder and will advise you on the correct style of fenestration that your home requires. Their award-winning Conservation™ range is a carefully coordinated collection of traditional timber sash and casement windows; beautiful French doorsets; increasingly popular balcony doors; dramatic bi-folding doors, and entrance doors with fanlights and fixed glazing so there’s plenty to choose from. Double glazing comes as standard in this collection with U-values that surpass the requirements of current Building Regulations which, if you are working on your project with the help of an architect, will be important to the specification. These products are Energy Saving Trust listed and carry the BSI Kitemark, the marque of excellence. Equally, if your property is listed, or in a conservation area where planning restrictions may overrule the use of double glazing, Conservation™ heritage single glazed sash windows with traditional true bar and putty glazing, or their new slim double glazed classic options, may be the perfect solution.

Maintenance
The company’s market leading warranties ensure they deliver to the highest standards. “Our customers are usually amazed that our products, which are fully factory finished, are delivered with three coats of high quality, micro-porous paint which is available in a wide choice of heritage colours, or stain, while a dual-colour option allows you to easily coordinate with the interior décor,” continues Frank. Inevitably timber windows will require maintenance during their lifetime and to ensure these products look better for longer you can purchase Mumford & Wood paint, colour matched to your original order, whenever you need it. Alternatively their Complete Care Service means that they will take responsibility for the care, maintenance and upkeep of your investment with an annual inspection and aftercare service. The Refer a Friend scheme means they say ‘Thank You’ to you, your friends and families when you recommend Mumford & Wood.
Homeowners can rest assured that Mumford & Wood’s Secured by Design accreditation will provide the highest levels of security Safe, Secure and Made to Last
Today security is of great importance and homeowners can rest assured that Mumford & Wood’s Secured by Design accreditation, this is the UK police initiative to design-out crime, to PAS:24 standards, will provide the highest levels of security. The timber the company uses is mainly Siberian Larch which is dense and slow growing. It is sustainably sourced and engineered to achieve the most stable, durable and robust timber making it perfect for fine joinery products. “Sourcing the correct timber is an art form in itself,” says Frank Buckley, managing director, “and we pride ourselves on making our timber selection the very essence of our success.” Recent research proves that timber windows made to the exacting standards of the British Woodworking Federation’s Wood Window Alliance scheme have an expected life cycle of 60 years and more so they will last longer, are greener and more sustainable than any other popular frame material.

getting approved…
How to ensure that your glass extension complies with the necessary Building Regulations
When it comes to adding a conservatory or orangery to a dwelling or changing a glass roof for a solid one, many UK home owners have been badly advised by misinformed neighbours, double glazing suppliers and double glazing salesmen looking for a quick sale without advising you of the consequences
S
ome glass extensions do need both planning permission and Building Regulatory Approval, whilst some need full planning permission only, or to apply for and comply with the Building Regulations. When it comes to replacing a translucent conservatory roof with a solid roof, many conservatory owners don’t realise that they can only do so by first obtaining Building Regulatory Approval. It may be helpful to first know what the “official” definition of a conservatory or glass extension is. Conservatories, porches and other such glass extensions share a common description with Regulation 9(1), 21(4) stating to meet the exemption status in Schedule 2 Class 7 of the Building Regulations. • They must be at ground level and have a floor area less than 30 square metres. • They must be thermally separated from the dwelling by walls, windows or doors which meet the energy efficiency requirements. • The dwelling’s heating system must not be extended into the conservatory, orangery or porch. Local Authority Building Control guidance is that to be considered exempt from Building Regulations the conservatory must also :
10 MARCH 2016
• Have at least 50% of its external wall area formed from translucent materials (not, however including walls within one metre of a boundary with neighbours) • Have at least 75% of its roof area formed from translucent materials • Heating should either be completely independent of the dwelling or be provided with effective controls to operate and isolate the heating from the dwelling A conservatory or any other type of glass extension must have a significant proportion of the roof and walls glazed to be considered exempt from having to apply and comply with the England and Wales Building Regulations. Consequently by adding a solid rood the structure then becomes a de facto extension with all that entails, and Building Regulations Application needs to be made. In addition planning permission may be needed. Your local Building Control Officer may require the new structure to have roof vents, and/or trickle vents retrospectively fitted to windows, or other changes made to the existing structure. There will certainly need to be adequate ventilation. Even if the actual new solid roof system has building regulation approval as a product that will comply, the remainder of each structure may also need to comply, and may need “Change of Use”
planning permission as the structure is changing from a conservatory to an extension. In some cases property owners may unwittingly be exceeding any intact Permitted Development Rights if the floor area of the conservatory is greater than PD rights allow. If since the conservatory was built the Permitted Development Rights have been withdrawn by the local authority, then it will not be possible to add a solid roof without first obtaining planning permission. The existing roof will either be glazed or polycarbonate and most typically here in the UK will have UPVC window and doors. If the roof is glazed, it is likely the vertical frames will have been designed to carry
weight composite solid roof is only likely to add an additional 0.5kN/m. The existing foundations should have trial holes excavated to ensure they are adequate to support the new loading. In most cases a 150mm thick concrete strip foundation or reinforced concrete slab which bears onto original ground will be adequate. Foundations passing over drains, close to tree roots or on filled ground may require further consideration. According to the Local Authorities Building Control guidance on adding a solid roof, “your local authority building control team is likely to ensure that the roof and supporting structure fully complies with the Building Regulations.”
If there is no reinforcement new window frames may be needed to support the weight of the roof the roof load. In the case of a polycarbonate roof, the vertical frames may only have sufficient reinforcement to carry that particular load. To assess the suitability of the supporting framework it may be necessary to verify the type and extent of reinforcement on site by either drilling pilot holes or testing with a magnet to test for the incorporation of a steel core. If there is no reinforcement new window frames may be needed to support the weight of the roof, or additional reinforcement installed abutting the existing frames. The typical loading of an existing glazed conservatory roof (not polycarbonate) is less than 10kN/m. A light-

here’s no doubt kitchens are the centre of our homes, but although they’re the area we choose to spend the most time, either eating or socialising, it seems all too few of us have our ‘dream’ space. Around 65% of Brits feel their current kitchen is far from ideal - with its inadequacies most exposed during the pressure-cooker stress of Christmas - and around a quarter struggle with a cramped or awkward shaped room, while 25% bemoan a lack of work surfaces, according recent research by Wickes. Aside from the benefits of enjoying this space more - and potentially being able to cook up a storm - it could be worth reconsidering a refit on financial grounds alone, as it’s the most popular way to add value to a property, estimated by experts at around 15%. “It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when trying to choose a kitchen,” says Daniele Brutto of Hub Kitchens, specialists in Italian-inspired design. “ There are so many materials, colours and finishes in the market at the moment, but what’s important is focusing on what will work for you
14 MARCH 2016
and your space. Pick something you like, which could be a particular wall colour, a floor tile or work surface texture and work outwards from there. Keeping one element at the heart of your design will make the whole process much more straightforward.” Take comfort from the fact that size isn’t everything, according to Brutto, who says small spaces can still look stylish if a scheme is kept simple and every inch of space is exploited. “Custom-made cabinets can conceal day-to-day appliances when they’re not in use, while it’s also possible to maximise preparation areas by using worktops which cover sinks or extend. “It’s all about marrying imagination with innovative design and creating a calm, relaxed environment, where it’s a pleasure to work and play.” See what’s on the menu for kitchens this year, and choose your own individual style recipe...

splashback, or add a warming glow with copper metallic accessories. “The general trend still continues for the kitchen to literally be the heart of the home, and grey is still a massive colour trend, whether it’s used for unit fronts or even grey grouting in between tiles,” says Wickes design consultant, Simon Burton. “A kitchen has to be a practical, user-friendly space, but is also regarded as an area to socialise, so open-plan designs, incorporating a kitchen and dining/living area, are still a top choice. One great way to enhance a social feel is to have built-in music speakers.”

WALK IN THE WOODS
Natural materials rule in decor, and showcasing rich wood grain and stunning stone worktops - marble through to slate - brings personality and ultimate luxury to a room. “The real trend at the moment for finishes is subtle, textural differences to give real depth, which will break up the monotone nature of surfaces. We’re going to see more use of natural exotic stones such as marble, slate and granite,” says Brutto. “We’ll see an even greater emphasis on the use of natural timbers, and there are some amazing timber veneers coming onto the market, which give cabinetry a rich, warm feel. The trend for mixing and matching veneers with harsher surrounds, such as concrete, steel and iron, will also feature strongly this year.”

Mixing modern and old-style materials, and using accents of black and charcoal to add definition, achieves a chic look which suits a country ‘kick off your wellies’ setting, just as much as an edgy industrial-style urban loft. “We believe a successful kitchen should feel like an organic part of a home, not a bolt-on or trend-conscious space. Instead, it should be a zone in harmony with our style and taste, and designed to totally suit our lifestyle. Contrast in colour or texture is particularly effective, for instance, rough brick set against a plaster wall, or a tiled effect below an open raftered ceiling,” says John Sims-Hilditch, managing director at Neptune. “This timeless look has enduring appeal, never goes out of fashion and looks better as it ages. Breaking up a run of wall cupboards with open shelving or glass-fronted upper cabinets is a useful design option, creating fluidity and an impression of more space.”

5 Top tips for: kitchens INITIAL DESIGN
By Julia Gray, Press Association
You can, of course, design your new kitchen yourself, but expert advice is hard to beat. A good kitchen designer will probably think of things you haven’t, and should know their products inside out. B&Q, for example, will design your kitchen free of charge and give you access to its Spaces 3D planning tool so you can have a go yourself. Working out what you do and don’t like about your current kitchen, and what you do and don’t want from your new one, is a good place to start.
USING THE SPACE
If you’re having an extension built to accommodate the kitchen, deciding how to divide up the space into cooking, dining and living areas should be done before designing the kitchen itself. It’s a good idea to wait until the shell of the extension is up because seeing it may change how you want to use the space.
DELIVERY
Waiting for the kitchen to be delivered can take longer than you think. Some ranges are available off the shelf, such as B&Q’s IT range - many items can be bought in store, but some are only available from the B&Q website, www.diy.com. Some kitchens take weeks, or even months, to arrive, which can seem like an eternity if you’re managing without one. And don’t forget to find a good kitchen fitter in advance and let them know when the kitchen is due to arrive to avoid unnecessary delays. Recent research from B&Q, which coincided with its Homefit installation service (www. diy.com/diy/homefit) being endorsed by the Which? Trusted Traders scheme, revealed that we spend more time choosing the colour of our kitchen than finding the right person to fit it.
DURING INSTALLATION
Cooking meals is the biggest challenge if you have to cope without a kitchen for long, especially if you have a family to feed. However, there are plenty of small appliances that make life easier - Russell Hobbs has a good selection, including a Mini Hob (£34.99, www.uk.russellhobbs.com) and MultiCooker (£89.99, www.uk.russellhobbs.com). George Foreman Fat Reducing Grills are great for cooking all sorts of things, but the new George Foreman Evolve Grill (currently reduced to £99.99 from £149.99, www.georgeforeman. co.uk) is like having a hob, oven and grill in one compact gadget. Another surprisingly versatile gadget is the De’Longhi Multifry (from RRP £159.99), which can be used to cook meals such as risottos and stews, as well as crisp chips.
WOOD CARE
If you’ve opted for wooden worktops, leave enough time to oil them thoroughly before installation to protect them from marks and warping. The worktops must be stored and oiled flat, so they do take up a lot of room. Once they’re fitted, remember to oil any cutouts, especially the one for the
16 MARCH 2016
sink, and keep oiling the worktops in situ - once a day for a week, once a week for a month and once a month for a year, a builder told me recently. The worktops need to be oiled on all sides, but especially the top, and it’s essential to use a good wood oil, such as low-odour Sadolin Worktop Oil (£15.99 for 500ml, Homebase). This isn’t the cheapest oil, but it’s definitely worth paying a bit more to give your worktops proper protection - inexpensive oils often aren’t up to the job. The Sadolin oil takes a while to soak in - leave for 24 hours before re-coating - but it repels water well and gives a lovely natural look.

Georgian bathrooms
‘Georgian Bathrooms tend to have high ceilings and big windows with lots of light flooding in. Grand and prominent features work well, for example, eye catching freestanding baths or exposed brassware fittings in the shower, or taps. You may also want to introduce bold colours, whether it’s a painted bath, or window dressing, it’s typical of this era to include dark reds, sage greens and cloudy blues. Elegant bathroom sanitaryware works best to create an authentic look, however, if you’re feeling daring very contemporary bathrooms designs can look amazing in these spaces too. If it is possible, retain the original features, for example fireplaces can look great behind a freestanding bath, this is the same for a huge Georgian window as there is often a low sill height. Victorian bathroom floors are still very popular and we are seeing a resurgence lately with a slightly more Aztec twist, for example Domus Azulej. Textured wallpapers give a very authentic Victorian

‘As the name implies, this look is rich in decoration with influence from the far east, using dramatic colours and textures. Blacks are often used and highlighted by golds and rich jade colours with chrome plating and lots of mirrors. Tiling is often patterned with geometric shape, as travel seeps through to the design of everyday household items, such as Belle Aire, the aeroplane taps by Lefroy Brooks. The sanitaryware is often stronger in shape, with a cubism influence, but also more natural. Lighting is very important to add Hollywood-esque glamour, with reflective mirrors and crystal lighting. Freestanding baths add glamour, in polished silver, but on plinth, not ball & claw feet. Black and white chequered floors are prevelant for art deco bathrooms as are marble surfaces. www.westonebathrooms.com

Tile with style
hoosing the right tiles for your bathroom needs some careful consideration. With so many varieties on the market, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by the choice on offer. Choose from ceramic, slate, glass and metal tiles, plain or patterned, large and small, smooth or textured. The options are seemingly endless. So, to help you through the decision process, we’ve put together some practical tips, making finding the perfect tiles for you bathroom, a breeze CERAMIC OR NATURAL STONE TILES? Ceramic tiles are the most popular by a long way. They’re durable, their glazed surface makes them highly resistant to harbouring germs, they’re usually very easy to keep clean, and come in styles to suit every taste. If you opt for ceramics, the most important thing to be aware of is that they do tend to vary from lot to lot, so make sure all the boxes you buy are stamped with the same lot number. But if you’d rather try something different... Glazed terracotta tiles are hugely popular right now with the trend for Mediterranean style bathrooms. Good quality terracotta is not only gorgeously rustic, it’ll last virtually forever, but can be hard to find. So the cheapest option might not be the best. Natural stone tiles like granite, slate, marble and even terrazzo (composed of marble chips imbedded in concrete and polished smooth) are beautiful, distinctive, and luxurious. They’ll cost you though. And these materials tend to be porous, so you may need to apply a seal to stop the tiles absorbing water. Make sure you discuss this with the supplier before you buy. Glass, metal, and porcelain tiles look brilliant if installed properly – but that’s easier said than done. Unless you’re really a dab hand at DIY you might want to leave the fitting of these to the experts. ADD TEXTURE AND INTEREST WITH BATHROOM TILES With the majority of bathroom suites being sleek and white, tiles are a
22 MARCH 2016
great way to add texture and interest into a room that can otherwise, look fairly clinical. If you’re talking floor tiles, texture is a must. It sounds like common sense, but many buyers are still seduced by lovely shiny tiles and then end up skidding all over the place every time the floor’s wet. Generally, the rougher the texture, the less slippery the tile when wet. When it comes to wall tiles, shiny tiles look chic and sleek and reflect light, making them a good option when in small or dark spaces. On the other hand, embossed tiles can be a smart way of adding interest to your walls and reducing starkness, especially if your tiles are in only one or two colours. CONSIDER COLOURFUL OR PATTERNED BATHROOM TILES It goes without saying that white is by far the most popular colour choice for bathroom tiles. White tiles are fresh-looking, classic, and reflect light to give the illusion of a more spacious, lighter room. If you’re worried about the room looking too stark add dark or patterned towels and other accessories to introduce splashes of colour while retaining the clean minimalist look. Colourful or patterned tiles can be used to add detail here and there, or make a bold statement when used to cover the entire wall. They tend to look best contrasted with simpler bathroom fixtures. SMALLER BATHROOMS LOOK BETTER WITH SMALLER TILES Generally, the more compact the bathroom the smaller the tiles should be, especially if there’s not much space between your sink, toilet, and tub. Smaller tiles will also require less cutting to fit around objects and make for a more flowing feel. If you’re lucky enough to have a big bathroom, large tiles give a sleek look with less exposed grouting in between. Borders or panels of smaller tiles can look fantastic in complimentary or contrasting colours.
