F

ollowing the resounding success of Classic Ibiza’s eight-night summer tour of our country’s best-loved stately homes, the show announces its return to Hatfield House in Hertfordshire on Saturday 17 August 2024, with tickets now on sale. Demand is already high, with some venues approaching 50% capacity after tickets were released to pre-registered audience members at the start of the month. Classic Ibiza’s Lisa Ward comments: “We’re blessed with such a fabulously loyal audience, making Classic Ibiza a permanent fixture in the summer diary for many. For me, that’s what makes the show so special. Seeing groups of friends and families coming together every year to party with us creates this incredible atmosphere, which is so hard to put into words. I guess house music has always been about a sense of togetherness – we’re just helping to continue that legacy for revellers of all generations.” Classic Ibiza will once again be headlined by the Urban Soul Orchestra (USO), who have performed with dance music greats, including Groove Armada, Nightmares on Wax and Robert Miles. They’ll be re-united with DJ Goldierocks, former Pacha Ibiza resident DJ Jose Luis, and a line-up of globally renowned vocalists for over five hours of Balearic-infused house anthems. Nearly 60,000 people partied to the Classic Ibiza vibe in 2023, with USO performing over 40 house classics to capacity audiences up-and-down the country. Nominated for numerous industry awards in recent years, plans are already afoot to take next summer’s show to new heights. Lisa Ward adds: “We’re never ones to rest on

BALLITO BOMBSHELLS: A Tale of Silk and Steel

New Exhibition at St Albans Museum + Gallery

A

fascinating tale of silk and steel, Ballito Bombshells exhibition opens 20 October at St Albans Museum + Gallery, Hertfordshire, and tells the story of Fleetville’s Ballington Hosiery Mill that manufactured everything from delicate stockings to robust artillery shells between the 1920s and the 1960s. The free exhibition will run in the Keeper’s Galleries until 04 February. Inspiring and remarkable, Ballito Bombshells recounts the stories of its employees – from their rigorous work to popular social events at the mill – and charts the history of the factory itself. Visitors will be able to enjoy a selection of the striking designs that made Ballito so memorable, a rundown of the machinery used in production, and an insight into the company’s role in the Second World War. The name Ballito is believed to have originated from the company’s first hosiery mill in Ballington,

Tennessee. In the early 20th century, NewYork brothers Alexander and Charles Kotzin took advantage of the growing demand for silk stockings after the First World War and began importing the popular products to the UK. When new import duties threatened the profits of the new businesses, the duo acquired an old factory in Fleetville, Hertfordshire, and technicians were brought over from Tennessee to install machines and train new employees. The Ballington Hosiery Mill opened in August 1925 and, within four years, was manufacturing more than 14,000 pairs of stockings each month. Farhana Begum, Arts, Tourism, Heritage and Culture Manager at St Albans City and District Council and Head of St Albans Museums, says: “Ballito Bombshells is a compelling exhibition that gives us an insight into life at the Ballington Hosiery Mill like never before. It is an exciting opportunity to understand more about the industrial history of St Albans and its role in the war, as well as the varied lives of its employees. “We are thrilled to showcase Ballito’s intriguing story in our Keeper’s Galleries at St Albans

Museum + Gallery, which offers visitors a fitting stage on which to enjoy this historical and delightful tale.” The social life at Ballito was an integral part of the employee experience. In the early 1930s, the company created a social hall and canteen that became so popular that the facilities were expanded a few years later to accommodate space for more clubs and activities (and underground shelters as war loomed on the horizon). Some of the most popular social sessions were boxing and Saturday-night dancing, including the ‘Ballito Tango’- a dance specially created by M. Pierre of the famous Regent Street School of Dancing. Employees spoke so highly of the activities that locals began to join in. By the 1950s, Ballito had even acquired its own sports fields in St Albans. The Fleetville factory was commandeered in 1939 as part of the war effort. Hosiery machines were pushed aside to make room for larger machines that would facilitate the creation of shell casings. Two-shift – day and night – working days were introduced to ensure a constant level of production. The premises would also go on to manufacture parts for de Havilland Mosquito and Tempest fighter planes as well as radar equipment. A small group of employees maintained some stocking production for the home markets. Sarah Keeling, curator (post-medieval to contemporary) at St Albans Museum + Gallery, says: “A history so close to home, it is an honour to be sharing the story of the Ballito and their crucial and varied roles within the company and community. It’s a story of hard work, determination and glamour which Fleetville and St Albans should be proud of. I encourage everyone to discover more at the exhibition starting at the end of October.” 22 NOVEMBER 2023

“The social life at Ballito was an integral part of the employee experience” Import pressures and shareholder control got the best of Ballito in 1967 when Courtauld bid successfully for the company. Unfortunately, Courtauld was only keen to buy the Ballito name and reputation, the reality of its veiled promise to maintain the manufacture of hosiery in the area. The Ballito management had to announce the high level of redundancies to its employees. Ironically, Marconi Instruments – the business responsible for the assembly of radar equipment at the Fleetville factory during the war – went on to lease space in the factory to expand its production line. Lynn Cunningham, Lead Councillor for Museums, says: “This is a fascinating project that celebrates the story of a hugely successful and historical brand and shines the spotlight on those behind it. Once again, the team at St Albans Museums + Gallery has curated an incredibly insightful and interesting exhibition that the community of St Albans and beyond will thoroughly enjoy.”

SECURITY

WESTMINSTER SECURITY Professionals In Protection…Always On Guard.

“They are typically from a military or police background using their vast training and experience to blend in and keep clients safe from danger”

T

he world has never been a more dangerous place in modern times, feeling vulnerable and let down by police and government security services to protect them, more people are turning to private security for their property and personal protection. Close protection is a specialist security service often thought to be the reserve of the ‘rich and famous’. However, in the face of police cutbacks, an increase in crime, and global terrorism, close protection services have become ever more popular with families and business owners. So, what is close protection and what does it

28 NOVEMBER 2023

entail? Close protection more commonly referred to as bodyguard services, or personal protection, is the provision of physical personal security to protect a person or group of people from harm or attack be it targeted, a general local threat, perceived or inherited threat and risk. Essentially, it is hiring bodyguards. Not your stereotypical burly bodyguard romanticised and depicted in TV and film, but a discrete nonimposing, non-threatening, professional close protection operative (CPO) embedded with a family or company that does not draw unwanted or unwarranted attention by undesirables. They are typically from a military or police background using their vast training and experience to blend in and keep clients safe from danger. Despite how bodyguards are perceived, close protection operatives do not spend each day fighting toe-to-toe with enemies. Research and planning are key, identifying potential threats and risks, and avoiding any verbal or physical altercations at all costs. Real-world bodyguards can blend in as family members, work colleagues, drivers, PAs, or nannies. Female bodyguards are increasingly popular with high-net-worth families for their stealth ability and emotional intelligence. With close protection being such a vital service for high-profile and high-risk individuals and families it is important to hire bodyguards through a highly credible, experienced, and established security company that is licensed and insured to provide such services. It is worth noting that household staffing agencies cannot legally satisfy these prerequisites. Westminster Security is a leading close protection company in the UK providing an array of personal security services in London, throughout the home counties, and beyond. Claridge’s Restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner with the menu overseen by Irish born Finn who has previously worked at Inverlochy Castle, Davies and Brook and Sketch. Classically inspired dishes, enhanced with modern twists, showcase the finest locally sourced ingredients. Starters include Buckwheat Crumpets, laden with soubise cream, truffle puree and slices of truffle, and Dorset Snails with parsley and parmesan croute. For mains, dishes span from whole wild Turbot grenobloise to share, Artichoke Agnolotti, to Grilled Native Lobster with crushed Jersey royals and sauce Américaine. Summer desserts include Raspberry Vacherin and a Chocolate Souffle Tart with cocoa nib ice cream. A collection of all-

T

he Berkeley has unveiled its Winter 2023 Prêt-à-Portea collection – a playful and stylish selection of couture cakes inspired by designers from Victoria Beckham to Nina Ricci. A firm favourite with fashionistas with a sweet tooth, Prêt-àPortea gives a contemporary twist to afternoon tea with a collection of bold catwalk-inspired creations. This season’s collection opens with a striking Versace gown, immortalised in vanilla mousse, Emmanuel sponge, a fig and plum compote, all topped off with a fashionable fruit tulle skirt. Harris Reed’s standout coat for Nina Ricci is crafted with Valrhona dark chocolate supreme and yuzu ganache, set on a citrus pain de gênes and finished with a chocolate statement collar.

Paco Rabanne’s shimmering ensemble is a Mont Blanc cake with chestnut mousse and blackcurrant jelly, set on a light caramelised chestnut sponge and topped with a glittering feather. Prada’s handbag of the season is a cinnamon blondie, glazed with silky white icing, and sandwiched with Ivoire chocolate. Victoria Beckham’s trophy jacket is an orange sablé, intricately piped with royal icing. Missoni’s legendary zigzag – this season showcased on a maxi coat – is depicted with mandarin mousse and almond praline, wrapped in Joconde sponge, and topped with chocolate zigzags. Finally, this season’s showstopping sharing cake is an Alexander McQueen gown, combining chocolate Gianduja cream, miso caramel and hazelnut sponge, finished with high-shine shimmering glaçage and a chocolate frill.

Do I need a lasting power of attorney? Graham Hearnden, of Trust Matters Group in St Albans, warns about the dangers of not having lasting powers of attorney in place

A

s people are living longer, so too will there be an increase in the number of people expected to need to give a third party power over their affairs. Lasting powers of attorney (LPA) are legal documents that let you appoint one or more people —known as ‘attorneys’ — to help you make decisions or to make decisions on your behalf in the case of loss of mental or physical capacity. This must be set up before

that occurs, as once you’ve lost capacity it’s too late and only a deputyship is possible. It can take months to apply for deputyship once someone is unable to look after their own affairs, and the fees to apply can be costly. These can include solicitor fees to apply for deputyship, an assessment from a GP and fees to apply to the Court of Protection (£371). If the court decides your case needs a hearing, a further £494 is payable. In

some cases, you must also pay to set up a bond to insure against misuse of funds, which must be paid for annually. There’s also an annual ‘supervision fee’ to the Office of the Public Guardian (£320 per annum and, in the first year, an extra £100 assessment fee). The person authorised by the Court of Protection to handle your affairs on your behalf is not only unlikely to be who you would have chosen, but may even be a court official — who can charge every time they act for you. By contrast, once an LPA has been granted, it doesn’t need to be renewed. The LPA rules, introduced in 2007, have enhanced the protection offered and ensure people are of sound mind when they set it up. Those with dementia are particularly vulnerable to the theft or illegal use of their property, money or other valuables. Those without an LPA are powerless to

“There are two types of lasting power of attorney: property and financial affairs; and health and welfare”

intervene. The delay involved in obtaining deputyship could also cause serious harm as finances are left inaccessible for several months. It’s also not a solution for those needing help in managing their affairs to give PINs as this could jeopardise the parents’ ability to recover losses if the account is hacked with no LPA in place. There are two types of lasting power of attorney: property and financial affairs; and health and welfare. It’s important to note that existing enduring powers of attorney are still valid, but they only cover property and financial affairs. Trust Matters is able to deal with all the legal requirements surrounding the drafting of an LPA, including preparing your documents, liaising with the Office of the Public Guardian and registering your documents.

The Silver Cup, Harpenden

Makes The Good Food Guide list of Britain’s 100 Best Local Restaurants 2023

N

eighbourhood gastropub The Silver Cup in Harpenden has earned another award to add to its growing list of accolades, making it onto The Good Food Guide’s list of Britain’s 100 Best Local Restaurants 2023. The prestigious Best Local Restaurant list celebrates the places that are the beating heart of communities around Britain. Using reader nominations as a driving force, The Good Food Guide team inspected a great number of restaurants in Central and East England to decide which ones deserved a place in the 100 Best Local Restaurants 2023. Some are old favourites, others are new to The Good Food Guide, all are brilliant places to eat. The Silver Cup is continuing to gather acclaim for its imaginative menus, standout flavours and its warm and welcoming atmosphere. Independently owned and led by Michael Singleton and chef Matthew Reeder, the pair took over in spring 2020 and transformed the 19th century pub into a contemporary dining space, with a regularly changing set menu and a well-balanced wine selection, stylish interior and newly refurbished outside terrace. Michael Singleton said: “We are thrilled to be on the list of 100 best local restaurants, especially as we were nominated by public vote and by those that love dining here. We have a fantastic

Word is now spreading beyond Hertfordshire, with regular visitors from London who are keen to come and experience our highlypraised set menu, Sunday roasts and steak nights.” Head chef Matthew Reeder has worked in the kitchens of top restaurants like Auberge du Lac, The Typing Room, The Galvin Brothers and Anglo in Farringdon where he was head chef. His superb seven-course tasting menu (£70) changes regularly and showcases the best seasonal ingredients. Current dishes include: Scallop, Sea Bass, Ponzu & Avocado; Cornish Sean Bream, Courgette, Octopus & Piccolo; Herdwick Lamb, Tenderstem, Anchovy & Mint; Jam, Toast & Earl Grey. Matthew is a fan of nose-to-tail cooking, buying whole animals and butchering them in-house, using local produce sourced from UK farms and estates. Mobile Phone Ban in Schools is Long Overdue

By Lara Péchard, Head at St Margaret’s School in Hertfordshire 56 NOVEMBER 2023

N

ew government guidance that mobile phone use should be banned in schools across England to improve behaviour, was issued in October by the DfE (Department for Education). In the announcement, Education Secretary, Gillian Keegan, confirmed that the Government will back head teachers in their plight to ban mobile phone use during the school day, including at break times. This latest guidance has of course been long overdue, particularly in light of the increasing cases of mental illness in our young people. We should be doing all we can to protect pupil wellbeing and reduce any health risks, many of which are clearly associated with excessive mobile phone use. Young people’s relationships with their mobile phones changed dramatically throughout the pandemic and, many would argue, not for the better. As a result, many schools began to ban their use altogether, but how do we redress the balance and nurture the right behaviours in a way that is also sensitive to the needs and pressures young people face today? My school has a ‘no mobile phone’ policy. As a result, it is unusual to see a student using their mobile phone during the school day. This initiative is incredibly popular with our parents and staff,

but it is also well respected by our students. That said, I do have concerns about how we model good behaviour with phone usage outside of school too. As parents, I feel we have a duty to our young people to help them find a healthy balance between screens and the physical world. After all, it isn’t just teenagers that have used their phones more since the pandemic; we have all found distraction, comfort and social interaction 24/7 through mobile phones. The average teenager will be quick to highlight the hypocrisy of your overuse when challenging theirs, so modelling the right behaviours from the top down must be a priority right now. As schools we should seek to support, educate and where relevant, draw upon real life anonymised, case studies to illustrate the impact that overuse can have. We must also encourage more open conversations at school and home about the behaviour that we might not like around mobile phone usage. However, we need to do this in a way that attempts to understand, empathise and support our young people by outlining concerns and consequences rather than offering sanction or judgement. stmargaretsbushey.co.uk

The Magic of Christmas THE DETAILS

T

ransform your home into a Winter Wonderland this Christmas at The Magic of Christmas, an enchanting Christmas shop in a large barn on a working farm in Walkern. The shop was initially opened 20 years ago as a way of diversifying and utilising space on the farm. Over the years It has evolved and you can now lose yourself for hours browsing a huge range of decorations, including garlands, wreaths, artificial or natural Christmas trees, baubles, stunning lights, exquisite table accessories and much much more... There is also a newly refurbished Nordic Tea-room where you can enjoy hot snacks, home made cakes and a range of pasties etc provided by local suppliers. Make sure you stop and take in the amazing aroma of the popular Nordman Fir Christmas Tree. The Magic of Christmas aims to provide its customers with good quality items that they will enjoy for many years. Their vision was to achieve the standards of the top London department stores in their barn at affordable prices. This has involved a lot of research and legwork attending Trade Fairs in this country and abroad, however this has enabled them to buy stock from European countries like Belgium and Holland as well as England and Ireland, offering a truly unique Christmas shopping experience. Founder and owner Jeremy Dyson explained, “When we first started out we only used part of the barn but our stock levels have risen year on year. Many of our customers travel from all over

the country and expect to find new items of both traditional and modern items to decorate their homes. We have found the spacious barn an ideal area in which to create wonderful displays and generous floor space for our customers. It is a huge bonus to be able to display fully dressed Christmas trees showcasing our range of crystal, linen and wooden tree decorations. We stock a wide variety of china, glassware, candles and advent items which all need display space. The creation of a designated Kiddies Corner has proved very popular with our young customers and their parents. We challenge ourselves by changing our Santa’s Grotto every year as we aim to produce an enjoyable experience for the children. Father Christmas will be in his Grotto from 25th November, children will receive present sticker and a personal letter emailed to them. The growing numbers of commercial clients has led us to stock big decorations and displays suitable for shop windows and other business premises. We carry a large range of readymade Christmas wreaths, garlands and table decorations and happily fulfil special orders for our customers. The artificial Christmas trees which we stock in various colours including green, red, gold, silver, blue and white in different sizes are all on display. We also stock Danish non drop trees that are mounted on specially designed stands by the car park so people can see the whole tree before they make their choice”

A SHOWSTOPPING CHRISTMAS AWAITS AT THE GROVE

J

ust a stone’s throw from London and nestled in 300 acres of Hertfordshire countryside lies luxury, family-run hotel, The Grove, which completed a stylish hotel-wide refurbishment this year. Once Queen Victoria’s favourite ‘weekending’ spot, the 18th century mansion has been given a luxurious makeover by Martin Hulbert Design, with each room and suite oozing individual character and charm with its mix of modern touches and bespoke antique furnishings. The award-winning Sequoia spa has also received a face lift at the hands of London-based designer StudioJill and introduced brand-new treatments with sustainable skincare brand, Bamford. When the golden leaves begin to fall and the nights start to draw in, The Grove is the place to be. With cosy nooks and crackling open fires to warm up beside, it’s hard not to feel at home – particularly when paired with friendly service from the team. In the lead up to Christmas, guests can enjoy a pop-up winter hideout on the terrace, with blankets, hot food and drinks to keep warm. Elsewhere around the hotel, guests can

unwind in the quirky Lounges, take a swing on the championship golf course or partake in woodland activities including archery, bike rides and axethrowing. Carol singers and live music await on Christmas Eve, along with Father Christmas’ reindeer to greet little ones. Families with kids will also be able to take part in festive arts and crafts throughout the season. On Christmas morning, wrap up warm for a stroll around the frosty grounds to work up an appetite for the feast ahead. Choose between Christmas lunch at The Stables or a buffet at The Glasshouse, before the kids meet Father Christmas himself. For those looking to ring in the New Year in the most glamorous of surroundings, The Grove will be on hand with sumptuous dinners, Champagne, a live DJ set, and, of course, a showstopping fireworks display at midnight. Whether you’re after a festive getaway with the family or are simply looking for a spot of preChristmas relaxation, at The Grove, you’re guaranteed unforgettable experiences like no other. community groups and more always attract large crowds. The Town Council works with local retailers to create a welcoming, festive feel to Harpenden, supporting one of their key messages: shop local. Their Christmas window competition has proved to be very successful and people of all ages enjoy following the trail of wonderfully creative displays. But it is the Christmas lights and magnificent tree which are the real star of the show. Switched on by the Mayor and special guests at 5pm, always a show stopping moment for the Town and a time to appreciate the hospitality and breadth of the best of Harpenden. Choosing to wear a matching top and bottom set makes getting dressed for any social occasion effortless. What I love about a co-ord is that you can then use the separates to make up lots of different outfits with other pieces you already own. t’s official: party season has arrived. While some of us will revel in slipping into a sequinned, dance floor-ready dress. Others will panic about the pressure to look suitably festive in anything that shimmers, shines or sparkles. First things first, let’s push aside what we think we’re supposed to wear. This year there are so many more alternative outfits you can choose from, so why not lean into it? It doesn’t have to be sequins, it doesn’t have to sparkle, all you need is a sprinkle of style to make your outfit party ready. Here are my tips for dressing over the festive season 2023 style. 1. Re-style what you have in your wardrobe. Over the years you will have probably collected pieces for evening outfits so why not try making up outfits from items you have never worn together before. It will make you feel like you have a new outfit to wear without spending any money. 2. Add a new accessory or two. Just by adding a new pair of shoes, a clutch bag or a pair of earrings you can instantly elevate a dress or an outfit you have in your wardrobe. Accessories will often finish off an outfit and add a touch of drama. 3. Rent your outfit. The search for that perfect dress can often be exhausting and costly. PERFECT SHOT Women have been shooting in dresses for hundreds of years, but shooting-specific tailoring for us has never been a thing - we’ve only ever been given the Gentlemen’s section in a smaller size. As someone from BASC once told me so succinctly - they just “shrink it and pink it.” Austuin does things wildly differently. We just make whatever we actually want to wear, and then add on all of the shooting bits you need, like suede patches, recoil pads and big cartridge pockets. Black magic: Go back to black this season

with the catwalk-inspired trend

It’s all about a dose of dark drama for autumn/winter, says Sam Wylie-Harris.

rends come and go, but if you had to bet all your chips on one colour never going out of fashion, you can bank on black. And as designers ditch colour in their collections and crave the fluid, liquid lines of fashion’s darkest and most addictive shade, you can embrace moodboosting monochrome and jet black without any fear of making a fashion faux pas – or bad buy. From a showy shoulder at Balmain – who would have thought that a PVC maxi dress could look even more sultry? …To sexy, slinky sequins at Michael Kors; tailored, long black coats (LBC) at Max Mara, Dolce & Gabbana, Victoria Beckham and Prada, black is more than a shot in the dark this season – and the devil is in the detail. To get the catwalk look, here’s what’s hot on the high street and will make a great first impression…

BLACK BLAZER Call it the power blazer, Le Smoking, or straightforward tailored trouser suit, this is your wardrobe staple to look sharp. “The trouser suit is an icon of sophistication and confidence,” says Zoe de Abreu, co-founder of Ro&Zo. “A black blazer matched with trousers will be the perfect companion for all occasions, as it transcends perfectly from day to night.” For a dare-to-bare aesthetic, go topless underneath – apart from a sexy black bralette – and accessorise with a cosmic choker or pukka set of pearls.

opines de Abreu. She says this trend is elegant and feminine, and can be worn in a range of textures, such as jersey, velvet and Merino wool. Moreover, baring a shoulder is very flattering – the neckline lengthens the neck, frames the face – and is a great transitional, versatile piece with a good measure of va-va-voom.

LUXE LACE Ladylike lace has been reimagined with trims adorning jersey and velvet – and it’s made a beeline for the little black dress. Whether a flattering midi dress is crafted from a luxuriously soft jersey that contours your curves, “A delicate lace-tiered hem adds a dramatic finishing touch,” says Karen Peacock, chief creative officer and co-founder, Albaray. Or embellished on the neckline and hemline of velvet, sheer lace channels some vintage charm with the X-factor. In fact, if you’re feeling thrifty, be inspired by ribbon and trim shops and think about sewing a lace trim on an existing black dress for an instant update.

LONG BLACK COAT A long black coat may not set your pulse racing, but the LBC took to the runway in its droves, with designers making it a key piece in their collections. And let’s face it, nothing looks more elegant or grown-up than wrapping yourself in wool. Just make sure it’s calf-length or longer. As Peacock puts it: “A sharply tailored black coat is a true investment piece, which is both functional and stylish.” “With the ability to style casually or formally, it will be a go-to during the colder months for years to come.” BLACK JERSEY ONE SHOULDER TOP; OMBRE SEQUIN SKIRT, RO&ZO.

SPARKLE Whether you go full-out sequins or dazzle in rhinestones, a sexy shimmer is where it’s at. “For autumn, sequins really capture the essence of festivity, allure and drama,” notes de Abreu. “Sequins are all about adding a touch of glamour to your look, and letting your outfit take the centre stage.” Moreover, “A flattering silhouette is created with a sequin halter top and matching flared trousers,” says Peacock. “Wear together to make a statement, or dress down and style with jeans or a simple T-shirt,” she adds. that pass the test of time

Step into a world of timeless elegance and design innovation as we explore the enchanting realm of iconic 20th-century pendant lights. These luminous forms not only brighten the home but also serve as unforgettable symbols of an era marked by artistic expression and avant-garde creativity. technology, pendants have come to encompass both functionality and the understanding of light’s power to alter the environment, as well as be a visual focus point. Designers explored innovative ways to manipulate incandescence and electricity, experimenting with materials, textures, and finishes, evolving pendants not only as sources of luminosity but also as expressions of artistry. From the ornate gas lamps of the 19th century to the 20th century’s streamlined mid-century forms, each era has left its distinctive mark on pendant light legacy with unforgettable, standout concepts. These iconic pendants have become timeless symbols of innovation, embodying the spirit of their respective epochs while continuing to inspire and captivate with their enduring beauty and functional brilliance. Whether enduring classics that transcend eras or symbolic pieces of the periods in which they were conceived, our curated selection of iconic pendant lighting is a journey through the evolution of design and illumination. Each piece is a testament to the creative genius of its time, ensuring that it will never go out of style. Together they form a gallery of fixtures that not only brighten the home but also narrate the tapestry of design history.

hen darkness draws in, it’s lighting that transforms our spaces into homes: cosy sanctuaries we look forward to all day and bask in into the evening. For decades, the centre-of-the-room pendant has been ‘the main light’, ‘the big light’ – and while floor, table and wall lighting has had its moment (and is vital to light-layering), focus is now back on what’s hanging from the ceiling. The pendant light is unique as a design object. Suspended with only a slim wire, it’s not limited by the pull of gravity or the need to support itself, and is viewed from 360-degrees, presenting an unusual creative challenge and opportunity. Simultaneously projecting and directing as well as filtering light and protecting eyes from glare, pendants must combine the decorative and the sculptural with the practical, setting the room’s ambiance with its soft, bright, warm, cool, focused or dispersed glow as well as being aesthetically pleasing in its own right. The perfect pendant. It’s a task designers have been perfecting since light came from oil and wax. As lighting developed alongside 122 NOVEMBER 2023

STILNOVO

“Suspended with only a slim wire, it’s not limited by the pull of gravity or the need to support itself, and is viewed from 360-degrees”

Sputnik Suspension Lamp Designed in 1957, Stilnovo’s Sputnik Suspension Lamp is a striking embodiment of mid-century modernism that has endured as a bold and timeless icon. Inspired – unsurprisingly – by the space age and the launch of the first artificial satellite, the pendant is composed of celestial-style radiating arms, each tipped with a glowing bulb, capturing the era’s fascination with all things cosmic. Now a cherished symbol of progressive 20th century design, it infuses spaces with a charming sense of the retro-futuristic.

LOUIS POULSEN PH 5 Pendant Light Created by revered Danish architect and designer

Poul Henningsen in 1958, the Louis Poulsen PH 5 Pendant Light revolutionised the way we perceive and use light. A lasting symbol of eternal elegance and lighting innovation, the PH5 combines functional brilliance with aesthetic beauty, its arrangement of layered, curved shades ensuring even illumination while minimising glare, its recognisable silhouette placing it in the design history book as shining example of Danish creative excellence.

VERPAN Fun 11DM Pendant Light Verner Panton First produced in 1964 by avant-garde Danish design visionary Verner Panton, the Verpan 11DM Pendant Light transcends convention with its mesmeric creativity. Dripping with cascading mother of pearl discs, the pendant evokes a sense of otherworldly allure, which is heightened when the discs flutter in the breeze. The playful yet elegant design dances between the realms of sculpture and lighting, casting an entrancing, ethereal glow when illuminated, and announcing the piece an emblem of the mid-century modern design era’s spirit of experimentation.

GUBI Multi-Lite Pendant Light Devised by innovative Danish designer Louis Weisdorf in 1972, Gubi’s Multi-Lite Pendant

Light is all about customisation. Its two shades can be independently rotated to adjust the direction and spread of the light to create different effects and atmospheres within a room – upwards for a soft, ambient glow, down for a more focused beam, or artistically arranged simply to look good. Seamlessly blending form and function, the inimitable pendant is a symbol of mid-century modern design’s timelessness and adaptability.

FLOS Viscontea Pendant Light Created in 1960 by the celebrated Italian design brothers Achille & Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, the Flos Viscontea Pendant Light attains its iconic status through a harmonious fusion of art and illumination. Inspired by the cocoon of the silkworm, it casts a soft and ethereal lighting effect that diffuses warm and gentle illumination, its organic aesthetic giving it the feel of a contemporary design despite its grand age.

&TRADITION Utzon JU1 Pendant Light Developed in 1947 by ground-breaking Danish architect (and Sydney Opera House designer) Jørn Utzon, the &Tradition Utzon JU1 Pendant Light encapsulates the eternal essence of Danish design. Drawing inspiration from the elegant simplicity of nature, its distinctive, sculptural shape exudes a sense of beauty and tranquillity. Diffusing soft, ambient light while serving as a captivating focal point, it transcends eras and zietgeist with its graceful aesthetic an effortless blend of art and utility.

FRITZ HANSEN Kaiser idell Pendant Light Conceived by pioneering German designer Christian Dell in 1931, Fritz Hansen’s Kaiser Idell pendant is a masterpiece of Modernist design that embodies the elegance of pure simplicity. A testament to the Bauhaus principle of form following function, its renowned domed shade casts focused and glare-free illumination with easy minimalism. Its status as an icon of design excellence endures, a testament to the influence of Bauhaus design principles. chaplins.co.uk NOVEMBER 2023 123

HOW TO FUTUREPROOF YOUR KITCHEN DESIGN A

Five expert tips from LochAnna Kitchens LochAnna Kitchens

new kitchen is arguably one the biggest renovation investments within a home and is not something that many can afford to do more than once, or perhaps twice, in their lifetime. Unsurprisingly, in a 2023 study conducted by leading platform for home renovation and design, Houzz, it was found that 43% of homeowners believe they opted for a timeless design as a sustainable choice during renovation, thus avoiding the pitfalls of being influenced by the ebb and flow of short-lived trends. Sinead Trainor, Kitchen Category Manager at British Kitchen brand LochAnna Kitchens draws upon her wealth of experience to share five key design considerations that can help make your kitchen design stand the test of time.

CHOOSE COLOUR CAREFULLY Selecting a colour for your kitchen cabinetry can be daunting, especially since it will likely be part of the home for several years. When aiming to create a kitchen that feels timeless, it is important to find a balance between a hue that feels modern yet

retains an aspect of class and simplicity. Neutrals such as off whites, pebble greys, and soft beiges are excellent for achieving this effect. When it comes to colour, we all have our own preferences, but if you’re struggling with where to start, a good rule of thumb is to avoid over using stark, brilliant whites as they can bring a cold, clinical feeling to the space. Equally, try and steer clear of using overly warm neutrals as these can make the space feel confined and dated, alluding to the trends of yesteryear. If you are someone who can’t say no to colour, but are still looking for a timeless look, try to aim for simple, traditional shades such as pale blue, navy or an earthy green for a more muted look that doesn’t threaten the kitchen’s long-term credentials. If you are a lover of deeper tones, you could also experiment with rich black cabinetry in especially large or well-lit rooms for a touch of timeless drama and sophistication.

BALANCE OF MATERIALS Designing a kitchen that is heavy-handed on its use of modern, engineered materials such as laminate and stainless steel, may look outdated in a number of years. Equally, a kitchen featuring a heavy use of more traditional and rustic materials like wood 130 NOVEMBER 2023

and stone can age it from the get-go. By balancing both kinds of materials, you retain an element of the new and the old, creating a timeless feel. For example, modern painted cabinetry is a great way to break up a rustic wooden floor. Similarly having a real stone worktop as the anchor of your room will add an element of timelessness and halo effect on the other materials in use around it. Remember to include shades, colours and textures that complement one another, as overcomplicating material selection will make it harder to visually achieve a sense of consistency and in turn, a natural, relaxing feel.

OPT FOR CLASSIC CABINETRY FOR LONGEVITY Kitchen trends are emerging faster than ever, which is why creating a design that has a neutral base can be hugely beneficial. You can’t go wrong with a traditional shaker-style or contemporary, flat fronted cabinetry in either a natural wood or painted finish as these have been in style for centuries and continue to be popular. Sticking to a neutral base also allows for more possibilities when it comes to personalising other aspects of the kitchen like hardware, upholstery and décor, as neutral tones go with most things. At LochAnna, some of our cabinetry can be sanded down and repainted, taking some of the pressure and finality of decisions away in case you ever change your mind down the line

THINK TO THE FUTURE When planning a kitchen, it is key to consider how the layout you select will impact future use for any additions to the family or household as well as just getting older. Accessibility is an often-overlooked aspect in the kitchen, but a consideration of this from the start makes for a much more userfriendly space in years to come. It is also important to think about where appliances are in correlation to each other and in particular your sink, oven, and fridge. Balancing the placement of these three core elements of the working triangle is vital. Working with a specialist kitchen designer is always recommended if you are struggling to devise a layout tailored to your personal lifestyle and routine.

ADD YOUR STAMP Ultimately, you should make sure you’re choosing what makes you happy. Combining practical, kitchen design tips with your own personal aesthetic preferences included is a win win. It’s about balance; otherwise, you are simply renting from the next owner of your home! LochAnna Kitchens provide a full colour matching service, where the customer can provide a specific hue or even an object to replicate across their cabinetry. 01204 328720 lochannakitchens.co.uk 132 NOVEMBER 2023
