local following in Harpenden, where we feel there’s nothing quite like the dining experience we’re offering. Word is now spreading beyond Hertfordshire, with regular visitors from London who are keen to come and experience our highlypraised set menu, Sunday roasts and steak nights.”
Head chef Matthew Reeder has worked in the kitchens of top restaurants like Auberge du Lac, The Typing Room, The Galvin Brothers and Anglo in Farringdon where he was head chef. His superb seven-course tasting menu (£70) changes regularly and showcases the best seasonal ingredients. Current dishes include: Scallop, Sea Bass, Ponzu & Avocado; Cornish Sean Bream, Courgette, Octopus & Piccolo; Herdwick Lamb, Tenderstem, Anchovy & Mint; Jam, Toast & Earl Grey.
Matthew is a fan of nose-to-tail cooking, buying whole animals and butchering them in-house, using local produce sourced from UK farms and estates. Fish and seafood is sourced as sustainably as possible, including hand-dived or picked scallops and oysters. The team make all their own bread, stock, and ice creams and they preserve the best fruit and vegetables by fermenting, pickling and curing to keep waste to a minimum.

Our friendly, WSET qualified team is always on hand and willing to offer their recommendations
to our customers. Our bespoke gifting and gift wrapping and delivery service is highly regarded in the St Albans community.
We hold regular ticketed producer wine tastings at St Albans and Hatfield and offer private tastings for up to 18 people, there is always a great selection of cheese and charcuterie served at our events. There are also two fantastic wine dispensers at our St Albans branch which always have 16 different wines available to taste or buy by the glass.
There is a hidden gem, St Albans (Chiswell Green) Vineyard called Wimbushes. Our team members are regularly involved in the harvesting of the grapes in September and pruning of the vines in January. We have the great privilege of selling this rare wine made from Solaris and Rondo grapes - in 2022 only 700 bottles of white and red were produced.

Unfortunately, London has become the epicentre of a watch theft epidemic where violent and often armed assailants are mugging unsuspecting luxury watch owners in the streets for their expensive timepieces. In 2022 there were over 6,000 reported watch thefts in London with an average value of £9,000, around £54m worth stolen last year alone. And 2023 is shaping up to be much worse.
So, what can you do to protect yourself in these testing times? We spoke to John Moore, Managing Director of Westminster Security Ltd, a world-leading personal protection company based in central London. John said: “Sadly, this is the world we now live in. Watch theft is more lucrative than other crimes and there is little deterrent
John advised: “Don’t get too intoxicated, don’t trust a stranger who is suddenly taking a lot of interest in befriending you, don’t walk alone, and always remain aware of your surroundings. If followed, run for help if you can, if attacked hand over your watch it is not worth dying for. Make sure your watch is insured and have it valued each year.”
How can Westminster Security help? “We provide discreet close protection operatives (bodyguards) to accompany or shadow our clients on nights out, watching their backs and those around them; for us, it is second nature spotting undesirables up to no good. We have thwarted many potential situations, and not always directly for our clients but their friends, colleagues, and other venue patrons.”
How much does a bodyguard cost? “Some clients spend several hundred or thousands on a bottle of champagne on a night out, we are not that expensive but if you can afford a luxury lifestyle it is worth paying for peace of mind”.

THOUSANDS ENJOY THE SPECTACULAR ST ALBANS FEASTIVAL
Albans City and District Council, supported by SA Law and St Albans BID - City Centre Businesses. It is part-funded by the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund
Its aim is to promote all aspects of the District’s important food and drink industry.
Councillor Lynn Cunningham, Lead Councillor for Events, said: “Once again, the St Albans Feastival gave thousands of people a fantastic and memorable day out.
“The turn-out was amazing as our residents as well as visitors from outside the District took up the opportunity to experience the best of our local food and drink businesses.
“Our restaurants, cafes, pubs, market stalls and their suppliers are of immense importance to the local economy, attracting visitors, generating revenue and providing jobs.
Thousands of people sampled the main course of the Enjoy St Albans Food and Drink Festival – a six-hour-long street party.
The City Centre was closed to traffic for the fun event known as the St Albans Feastival on Sunday 24 September.
Attractions included around 100 market stalls selling a vast variety of food and drink products, live music and street entertainers.
There was also a children’s create and play zone with free arts and crafts including seed planting by Carpenter’s Nursery and an illustrations display and activity by the Samuel Ryder Academy.
The inclusive event used a British Sign Language interpreter at the cookery theatre and provided accessible viewing zones as well as a community safety zone, a quiet spot where people could sit and take time out from the action.
Among the crowds was the Mayor of St Albans City and District, Councillor Anthony Rowlands, who toured the stalls and spoke to many of the traders and entertainers.
The Feastival was centred on St Peters Street with the party starting at noon and continuing until 6pm.

Vivien Cannon of St Albans BID said: ““The event celebrated and highlighted our hospitality industry; nationally, this sector is up against it in this economic climate.
“Our St Albans’ ‘foodie’ reputation was once again supported and enhanced by the Feastival. Well done to the Council team who organised the event and we look forward to the next stage, celebrating the winners of the Food and Drink Awards.”

The delay involved in obtaining deputyship could also cause serious harm as finances are left inaccessible for several months. It’s also not a solution for those needing help in managing their affairs to give PINs as this could jeopardise the parents’ ability to recover losses if the account is hacked with no LPA in place.
There are two types of lasting power of attorney: property and financial affairs; and health and welfare. It’s important to note that existing enduring powers of attorney are still valid, but they only cover property and financial affairs.
As people are living longer, so too will there be an increase in the number of people expected to need to give a third party power over their affairs.
Lasting powers of attorney (LPA) are legal documents that let you appoint one or more people —known as ‘attorneys’ — to help you make decisions or to make decisions on your behalf in the case of loss of mental or physical capacity. This must be set up before

It can take months to apply for deputyship once someone is unable to look after their own affairs, and the fees to apply can be costly. WHAT IS THE FUTURE OF EDUCATION AND HOW DO WE BEST PREPARE OUR CHILDREN?
As Executive Principal, my role is to oversee our ongoing strategic work, facilitating co-operation in the pursuit of excellence to put the Haberdashers’ Elstree Schools at the very forefront of education.
I am delighted to be working with two superb Heads, Dr Hazel Bagworth-Mann at Habs Girls and Mr Robert Sykes at Habs Boys.
As Heads, they are responsible for leading the individual schools on a day-to-day basis, ensuring that the academic, pastoral and co-curricular education they receive is first-class. For everyone at Habs, we need to adjust and adapt to new ways of working and collaborating whether that be the configuration of timetables and IT systems or learning to see ourselves not as two separate (or indeed competing) schools, but one larger entity that has the power and experience to play a leading part in conversations about the future of education.
As schools and as a community, we face many challenges and opportunities. A child starting in Reception at Habs this September may well enter the workplace in or around 2040 and will probably reach the peak of their professional careers in the 2070s. Many will be working well into the next century! We all need to understand and adapt to the way in which technology and AI affect our lives and the workplace of the future, or consider how we can contribute to equity in our society
and play our part in the environmental challenges we face on this planet. Our children must be equipped to thrive and indeed to lead in a fastchanging world.
At its heart, the Habs Elstree Schools exist to empower young people to make a profound impact in the world, and our strategy seeks to help them develop the skills and confidence, as well as the energy and moral determination to do just that.
Over the last year, we have reviewed, updated and simplified our six strategic aims. These range from our academic and pastoral ambitions, to work on our campus, and recruiting and retaining the very best staff.
You can find our strategy here and watch our introductory video from our new Executive Principal and Heads. habsboys.org.uk; habsgirls.org.uk

TOWNSEND CHURCH OF ENGLAND SCHOOL
Townsend Church of England School is situated on a large, green site between St Albans and Harpenden, and welcomes applicants from families of all faiths and of no faith. Children who attend Townsend live in St Albans and Harpenden, as well as other towns in Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire, including Welwyn Garden City, Hemel Hempstead and Luton.
The Bible-based vision of Love Your Neighbour underpins all they do. Students are taught to respect and care for themselves and each other, and Townsend’s supportive environment encourages them to make the most out of their journey through secondary school. The whole school attends four services every year at St Albans Cathedral and Abbey, which reflects their strong links with the Diocese of St Albans.
Destinations from Townsend at the end of Year 13 vary greatly depending on the aspirations of individual students. One student who graduated last year is now studying at the University of Cambridge, while another has begun an apprenticeship in Accountancy. At GCSE level, a student in last year’s cohort of over 150 students achieved all grade 9s as well as an A grade at AS
level maths.
Townsend believes that educating the whole child is key to a successful education. The Duke of Edinburgh award scheme is a popular choice and the number of residential visits is increasing. Townsend also produces fantastic shows throughout the year. The Musical Oliver will be performed at the end of July as well as a festive pantomime and school showcase of talent just before Christmas.
The local community benefits greatly from Townsend’s wonderful facilities, many of which are used every evening and at weekends. The swimming pool, football pitches and school hall are used by community organisations. They are also home to St Albans Music School who use Townsend’s Music Centre, 12 peripatetic rooms and various larger spaces throughout the school to teach, rehearse and showcase their talents.
Newly appointed Headteacher, Mr Anthony Flack is excited by the opportunity to make Townsend, in his own words, ‘The first choice secondary school for all’.
Friendly and welcoming, Townsend impresses with its calm learning environment and caring staff. The school is hosting Open Mornings throughout October for those who want to find out more and what the school has to offer firsthand. For further details, visit their website or follow them on social media. townsend.herts.sch.uk

Felsted - TES Boarding School of the Year 2023!
Felsted School has been named the top boarding school in the UK. by TES (Times Educational Supplement).
The independent school on the HertsEssex border has been recognised by a panel of expert judges for its pupils’ excellent academic achievement as well as the “innovation, imagination and effort that goes into developing children in ways that go beyond the league tables”, according to TES.
“This is clearly a fantastic school that people want to send their children to,” said Gwen Byrom, a member of the judging panel of the prestigious TES Schools Awards, which celebrate the commitment, quality and innovation of teachers and support staff across the UK.
Felsted was founded in 1564 and today educates 1,000 girls and boys aged four to 18 on a beautiful 80-acre countryside campus. The school’s forward-looking academic programme is constantly evolving to embrace the latest thinking,
approaches and technologies, but also on the timetable are sport and the arts, as well as activities, clubs and societies designed to help each pupil to discover their own strengths and passions. Great emphasis is also placed on developing confidence, independence, and the skills of communication and team-working that are essential for adulthood.
Most children at Felsted Prep School are day pupils, but many pupils over the age of 13 board in the school’s comfortable on-campus boarding houses. There is a choice of boarding arrangements, including weekly boarding, which is popular with families from across Hertfordshire. Rather than commuting, weekly boarders have more time to spend with their friends studying or pursuing their interests on weekday evenings, while enjoying weekends at home.
“Felsted is more than just a school, it’s a way of life,” explained Felsted Head, Chris Townsend. “Whether day pupils or boarders, all of the young people here benefit from the support of a strong community and an environment that encourages them to push themselves beyond their comfort zones, to achieve more than they could have imagined. This prepares them to be happy and successful and to make a positive difference, wherever life takes them.”

How St. Francis’ College Inspires Students To Dream Bigger
St. Francis’ College offers a robust and stimulating educational experience, cultivating intellectually creative minds within a nurturing community. Through small class sizes, exceptional teaching and an integrated pastoral programme, students develop the confidence to have a go, make mistakes and try again.
In our fast-paced, demanding world, holistic student development has become paramount, which is why St. Francis’ puts so much emphasis on actively instilling the core values of DREAMS - Determination, Resilience, Empowerment, Appreciation, Motivation, and Security - in its students.
An annual highlight, Five Star Week, amplifies these values. This week-long immersive experience not only enriches students’ learning but equips them with essential life skills, encouraging them to embrace their dreams and thrive in all aspects of their lives.
Five Star Week encompasses competitions, creative projects, academic challenges and financial workshops where students are encouraged to set goals and work diligently to achieve them. Conquering hurdles and stretching their boundaries during these pursuits fosters a strong sense of determination that stays with students long after the week concludes.
Resilience emerges, enabling students to rebound from setbacks and confront challenges with courage. Through exposure to new experiences, unfamiliar environments, and challenging tasks, students push their boundaries
and step outside their comfort zones, learning to adapt, persevere, thrive in the face of difficulties and face future challenges head-on.
Empowerment arises as students uncover their talents, passions and strengths. Participation in workshops, leadership activities and vocational projects fosters self-assurance, helping them understand the potential within themselves. This newfound self-confidence fuels their embrace of individual capabilities.
Cultural engagements deepen empathy, respect, and gratitude. This exposure kindles an appreciation for diverse outlooks, nurturing compassion and inclusivity.
By engaging in activities aligned with their talents and aspirations, students find joy and fulfilment. This internal motivation propels them to pursue their goals and dreams.
St. Francis’ College’s collaborative ethos nurtures belonging and mutual support. Cooperation, shared experiences, and connections form a safety net for emotional well-being.
In embracing DREAMS, students navigate challenges, cultivate gratitude, and spark positive global change. St. Francis’ empowers students to stride forward with confidence and create a brighter world.

Mrs Hardy read History at Somerville College, University of Oxford, then studied for a PGCE at London University. More recently, she completed an MEd in Educational Leadership. She is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. Mrs Hardy sees the move to John Lyon as the natural
culmination of her commitment to the highest standards of academic, pastoral and co-curricular education for all children and young people.
On accepting the role, Mrs Hardy said: “This is an exciting time for the John Lyon School as it continues the transition to a fully co-educational all-through 3 to 18 school and I am delighted to be appointed as Head. John Lyon School has a rich history and I am proud to have been entrusted with its leadership, working within the John Lyon Foundation and with the Harrow Family of Schools, for the School’s next chapter.”
Mr Giles Goodfellow KC, Chairman of Governors, added: “With a real wealth of experience delivering academic excellence, coupled with outstanding pastoral care, the Governors believe Mrs Hardy is exceptionally well-placed to deliver the next chapter of John Lyon’s development. Her passion for education at all stages, from Early Years through to the Sixth Form, convinced us that she will be ideally suited to build on the successful legacy Miss Haynes has delivered over the last 14 years.”
We are excited with what the future holds for John Lyon School as we extend the warmest of welcomes to Mrs Hardy.

THE WORLD’S FINEST DESIGNER BRANDS
BURBERRY How the brand evolved from humble raincoat maker to luxury fashion giant
Always one of the most eagerly awaited events at London Fashion Week, the Burberry catwalk show attracts A-list celebrities, high-profile fashion editors and the biggest influencers from around the world.
Last season, supermodel Naomi Campbell sat alongside Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Jason Statham on the front row to watch chief creative officer Daniel Lee unveil his debut collection, and expectations were high for the designer’s second show, which took place on September 18.
Coveted by consumers across the globe, the luxury label is perhaps the most famous British fashion brand, but it hasn’t always been such a hot property. We look back at the tumultuous history of Burberry…
ADVENTUROUS ORIGINS
The brand was founded in 1856 when 21-yearold former draper’s apprentice Thomas Burberry opened his first shop in Basingstoke, Hampshire. Focused on creating outerwear that shielded
Katie Wright traces the 167-year history of the iconic British brand.
“Coveted by consumers across the globe, the luxury label is perhaps the most famous British fashion brand”
wearers from typical British weather, the founder invented gabardine – a water-resistant but breathable fabric – and patented it in 1888.
“Prior to this, waterproof clothing was made of rubberised cotton which was cumbersome, not breathable and certainly not chic,” explains celebrity fashion stylist Miranda Holder.
“In contrast, garbadine’s individual fibres were waterproofed before the weaving process, creating a lighter, more fluid and comfortable piece.”
In early examples of celebrity endorsement, Norwegian explorer and zoologist Dr Fridtjof Nansen wore Burberry gabardine when he sailed to the Arctic Circle in 1893, while famed British explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton chose the outerwear for three expeditions in the early 1900s.
THE WAR YEARS
The now-iconic Burberry trench coat was invented during WWI with a range of features designed for military use – including the gun flap and D-rings to carry grenades – many of which remain today.
“Each classic Burberry trench is composed of 90 individual, specially shaped components,” says Savile Row tailor Alexandra Wood, founder of Alexandra Wood Bespoke.
“The key design elements include its doublebreasted front, shoulder epaulettes, beige colour, belted waist, buckled cuffs, storm flap, and a checked lining that the brand has become
synonymous with.”
The distinctive beige Burberry ‘nova check’ was introduced in the 1920s and is still used as a lining now, with the ever-popular trench coats retailing from around £1,500.
“The appeal of the Burberry trench has to be largely due to its adaptability,” says Holder.
“The coat’s pale beige colour perfectly lends itself to a myriad of different outfit options, and the flash of luxury lining – nova check or not –makes it instantly recognisable as a luxury piece.”
THE ROYAL SEAL OF APPROVAL
In 1955, Queen Elizabeth II granted Burberry a royal warrant as a weatherproofer, and by the Swinging Sixties business was booming, with the brand saying it made one in five coats exported from Britain.
The nova check graduated from discreet lining to designer status symbol, with coats, scarves and umbrellas in the beige print proving popular with shoppers in the Seventies.
In 1990, Burberry secured its second royal warrant, as an outfitter, from the now King.
NOUGHTIES NOTORIETY
After decades of success, the Burberry shine was tarnished when a more mainstream audience embraced nova check in the late 1990s, snapping up entry-level items and causing the brand to

discontinue sales of baseball caps.
“The pattern soon filtered down to the high streets and eventually the football terraces – it remains one of the most copied counterfeit designs today,” says Holder.
“As a result Burberry’s star fell hard, the brand losing any exclusivity it once had, being unable to control who wore the label.”
Paparazzi photos of Eastenders actress Danniella Westbrook in head to toe nova check were seen as the final nail in the coffin, she adds: “Danniella was getting a lot of very negative publicity at the time, relegating the designer to the bins of bad taste.”
THE CATWALK COMEBACK
Attempting to rehabilitate the brand as the new millennium dawned, Burberry opened its first store on upmarket Bond Street in 2000 and brought in 29-year-old Christopher Bailey as design director the following year.
“Christopher Bailey made a significant impact during his tenure as creative director by modernising Burberry’s image, introducing digital innovations, and collaborating with artists and musicians,” says Wood.
“It made Burberry fresher and more relevant and helped to make the brand have an edge, whilst remaining sympathetic to its crisp, British design aesthetic.”
Scaling back production of nova check, Bailey brought glamour to the brand and staged blockbuster catwalk shows with live music from artists such as Tom Odell and James Bay.
“He updated the classic trench, putting new twists on the heritage design and bringing in
supermodel Kate Moss to give it a new lease of life,” Holder says.
“Bailey successfully repositioned Burberry as an industry leader and innovator, and as a result, tickets to their catwalk shows were some of the most sought after on the London Fashion Week schedule.”
A-LIST APPEAL
Following the departure of Christopher Bailey with a memorable rainbow-themed catwalk show, Italian designer Riccardo Tisci was appointed chief creative officer at Burberry in 2018.
“Riccardo Tisci injected some younger, more contemporary energy into the aesthetic, which was a roaring success,” Holder says.
“Influenced by streetwear, his collections attracted younger fans who appreciated his edgier styles, despite critics pointing out a lack of continuity with the brand’s more traditional heritage.”
Tisci enlisted model friends such as Kendall Jenner and Irina Shayk to walk the runway and dressed stars including Nicki Minaj and Kate Moss for the Met Gala.
He also reintroduced nova check, much to the delight of celebrities and a new generation of Burberry fans.
Bradford-born Daniel Lee took over from Tisci and made his debut at London Fashion Week in February 2023.
The autumn/winter collection – which didn’t feature any beige trench coats – teamed sweeping coats and chunky knitwear with irreverent accessories like a woolly hat shaped like a duck and hot water bottles carried like clutch bags.

See Kylie Minogue, Rachel Weisz and Jodie Comer don trench coats for Burberry show
The heritage brand showed its spring/ summer collection to a star-studded front row. By Prudence Wade.
Kylie Minogue, Rachel Weisz and Jodie Comer joined stars from the worlds of music, film, fashion and sport to watch Burberry’s London Fashion Week show.
This was Bradford-born Daniel Lee’s second outing at London Fashion Week as creative director of the brand, having taken over from Riccardo Tisci in September 2022.
After choosing Kennington Park as the location for his first show, Lee settled on another green space for this season, setting up a large tent with a green checked print on top in Highbury Fields, north London.
Padam Padam singer Minogue, who performed at London Fashion Week’s opening party, wore a leather-look green coat to watch the show, paired with the unusual colour combination
of purple shoes.
Green was a common theme among attendees. Rachel Weisz, who recently starred in TV series Dead Ringers, also wore a green trench coat, but in a matte material and with a more voluminous silhouette, and wide-legged patterned trousers underneath.
Retired long-distance runner Sir Mo Farah opted for a pared-back look that was unmistakably Burberry – a trench coat with the brand’s nova check lining, and the same print emblazoned on his shoes.
Killing Eve star Jodie Comer channelled transitional dressing for the occasion, wearing a strapless checked knee-length dress, paired with black riding boots.
Model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and actor husband Jason Statham were also in attendance –Huntington-Whiteley in a classic Burberry trench and oversized sunglasses, while Statham wore a black jacket with an olive jumper underneath and matching eyewear.
Naomi Ackie, who portrayed Whitney Houston in I Wanna Dance With Somebody, wore an autumnal outfit of wide-legged green and white checked trousers and diamond-patterned top.
Also picking up on the green and white theme was American actress Gabrielle Union, who wore a tartan coat with a slicked-back hairstyle.
Other attendees included Arsenal footballer Bukayo Saka, Blur singer Damon Albarn, The Banshees Of Inisherin star Barry Keoghan and model Jourdan Dunn, all keen to see Lee unveil his spring/summer 2024 collection.
The outfits on the runway were a much more classic take on the Burberry aesthetic. Lee’s first season received mixed reviews, with some saying Lee strayed from the brand’s DNA and introduced too many quirky elements, such as woollen hats that looked like ducks and hot water bottles used as bags.
For this show, Lee put the focus on Burberry’s signature product, the trench coat. Alongside more traditional cuts, he reimagined the style in multiple ways – with sleeveless versions, cropped styles and a bomber-trench hybrid.
Lee is making bright blue Burberry’s hallmark colour under his tenure, dubbing it Knight Blue in
a nod to the knight on the brand’s logo. There were flashes of blue throughout the collection, from collars to check patterns.
The runway was as star-studded as the front row, with some of the biggest names in British fashion on the catwalk. Adwoa Aboah walked in an on-trend set of a patterned shirt and relaxed knee-length shorts, and was joined by models Neelam Gill, Leomie Anderson and Jean Campbell.
Elsewhere on the runway, floral and checked gowns had scooped backs, and an emphasis was put on chic accessories – including oversized belt bags, under-arm handbags and glittering clutches.
Lee tapped into the trend for goth glam makeup in the beauty looks, with many of the models sporting dark lipstick.
While it was a more traditional collection than last season, it still felt fresh and modern, and there was a hint of irreverence at the end, when a male model closed the show in low-rise navy trousers, a statement belt with Burberry’s logo as a buckle, and no shirt.
Lee has been building anticipation for the show with various stunts, such as renaming Bond Street tube station Burberry Street, and taking over Norman’s Cafe in Archway – turning it into a Burberry-style greasy spoon, with lots of blue check and even a visit from former Great British Bake Off judge Mary Berry.
With a star-studded front row giving their seal of approval and a more wearable collection, it looks like Lee has hit his stride at Burberry.

THE CHAPLINS SHELF-HELP GUIDE: 7 styling secrets to boost your bookcase
From the floating to the freestanding, the room dividing to the flush-againstthe-wall, despite their light framework and generally slimline designs, shelving systems and bookcases are hugely impactful pieces of furniture, well worth putting some time and thought into.
Modern homes have become less about pure good looks and more about the art of telling stories and creating personal narratives – now’s the time to gather the objects that mean the most to you and put them where you can feel their positivity every day. New shelves are a great opportunity to browse the house and compose a new collection combining the items you find within.
There are no rules regarding what you put on display. Large, small, old, new, useful, decorative, colourful, muted, hand crafted, machined… bring it all together and start from there.
The first thing to do, whether you’re working with a box-fresh new piece of storage or refreshing something existing, is to start from scratch: empty it. There’s no other way. Once you have a blank slate, then the decisions begin.
What’s the shelf for? Practical storage, or a beautiful, decorative addition to the room? Is it about aesthetics, or expression? What type of atmosphere do you want to create?
Set the mood layer by layer, ledge by ledge with our professional styling methods and strategies to create a contemporary shelving display, and artfully showcase everything from treasured collections and works of art to plants, books and beyond.
MIX MATERIALS AND TEXTURES
Melding different textures and materials on the shelf top, from paper to ceramics, wood, glass and metal, adds a pleasing element of contrast to a space – either place objects on the shelves that juxtapose each other to create interest, or have the whole shelving system differing from the room itself for larger impact and to make the shelf a standout design feature. Texture – the more tactile the better – also brings a warm and cosy feel, and
placing high contrast surfaces side by side (say, a high gloss finish next to a rough ceramic) ups visual appeal and intrigue.
INTRODUCE ILLUMINATION
Using shelving with built-in lighting, or including a free-standing light on a shelf has many more pros other than simply increasing visibility. Lighting adds depth and dimension, cultivating visual interest while emphasizing the threedimensional nature of the structure. As well as creating ambiance – warm tones equal cosiness, cool coloured bulbs are energetic. Lights can also draw focus to certain pieces so they stand out, and make collections looks even more impressive – and when turned off, built-in lighting becomes invisible while lamps become beautiful sculptures.
STRIKE A BALANCE
When putting your shelving arrangement together, it’s important to bear balance and proportion
in mind – carefully considering the layout and placement of items will make it easier for your collection to harmonise. For a modern, diverse feel, play with scale and emphasize variety (rather than grouping similar styles together), varying the heights, sizes, shapes and materials on each level and across the width of every shelf – aim for casual asymmetry. Generally, larger objects are happiest on the lower section of the shelves, with the lighter and smaller pieces up top – but don’t be afraid to break this rule every now and then for a freer and more contemporary aesthetic.
MASTER THE MINIMALIST MINDSET
A sparsely populated shelf speaks of curation and confidence, and decorating with a small number of favourite objects turns all the attention to them as refined focal points. While it’s tempting to fill a shelf with beloved items (or unconsciously add to the collection here and there), going for a reduced, minimalist selection lets each piece standout and shine, turning the shelves into a chic, composed selection. Each object has enough space to breathe, and becomes more meaningful and respected by the room afforded to it.
LET CREATIVITY FLOW
When are shelves not shelves? When they’re a mini, in-house, private art gallery. Shelving is the place for creative collections – from paintings, prints and photography to sculptures and beautiful, beguiling objets, shelving offers the opportunity for organised, easy curation and display. An art-filled shelf not only prompts meaningful conversations, but is an outlet for self-expression, the display reflecting your personal style, individuality and making the space truly unique – and bringing a daily dose of delight.
TELL YOUR TALE
Shelving is the ideal space to showcase who you are through the objects that narrate your life. As well as visibly sharing your story, personality, interests and experiences with visitors, placing personal mementoes on show has a deeper effect too; being surrounded by memories evokes nostalgia and positive emotions, creating an ambiance that’s emotionally rich, uplifting and positive. Sentimental items are reminders of experiences, people and achievements – keeping them visible preserves those memories, fostering a home environment that feels warm and that you’re strongly connected to.
EDIT, EDIT, EDIT
We all get a little bored with our decor, and shelving’s inherent flexibility means that it’s as easy as lifting-up and placing-down to refresh a wall and the atmosphere of the whole room. Objects can be rotated, swapped out or updated in an instant. Taste changed? New season? Things getting cluttered? It’s no problem on the shelf, the controlled spacing so naturally lending itself to neatness and organisation. Having an ever-evolving collection on show keeps the display dynamic unexpected and endlessly appealing, keeps the space fresh and aligns the area with who you are and how you want to express yourself. chaplins.co.uk
Origin Do It All
When the Langley’s first thought about getting an indoor pool, they knew they wanted to use it daily for exercise as they both love swimming however, space was an issue as well as the possibility of moving in the future so they held off until finding their dream home. “We had already done a lot of research during our original search for indoor pool builders, so when we finally decided to go for it we knew that Origin were the company for us. They had great references, some amazing photos and we liked what we read about them on their website and in the press.”
THE VISION
“Origin took care of all the planning, having professionals handle this was key for us as they knew the process and requirements to achieve the best result. It was pretty straightforward and Origin provided everything, removing any potential risks or challenges along the way.”
Originally, the Langleys wanted the pool house to be parallel with the existing property boundary, however, due to some potential challenges with the groundworks, Origin needed a creative solution. The Langley’s were also having stable block built, so Origin proposed the idea of an ‘L’ shape layout for the two buildings, creating a courtyard in the middle and multiple viewpoints from the pool house.
THE DESIGN
During the design stages, Origin arranged for the Langleys to visit a variety of recently finished projects that could provide some inspiration for the style and atmosphere they were looking for. “Visiting previous projects was invaluable, it gave us a much clearer idea of the size of pool we wanted. We also loved seeing how previous clients had chosen to designate space for lounge areas, bars and kitchens, it definitely provided us with some inspiration on how we wanted to balance the space in our pool house.”

In terms of design, the end goal was to create a restful space. Origin’s design team helped the Langley’s pick the right finishes to achieve this look, especially when it came to the pool tiles.
“We didn’t want the water to look ‘too blue’, we were inspired by a past project we had visited and loved the way the more natural coloured tile changed the overall look of the water, transforming it into a restful and relaxing shade of turquoise. The design part of the process was probably one of our favourite parts, seeing how Origin took our ideas and bought them to life while incorporating their own thoughts was really interesting.” When it came to heating the pool, Origin wanted to give the Langley’s as many options as possible and knew that renewable energy would be high on their list of considerations due to the fact that a ground source heat pump provides heating to the main house.
“Origin were great at laying out all the options and costs, although we decided on the air source heat pump we did get an LPG tank fitted as a back up for the pool in the winter and solar panels fitted elsewhere in the garden to provide electricity for both the main house and pool house as we did want to be as environmentally conscious as possible.”
SIMPLY THE BEST
“The main thing that stuck out throughout the whole process was just how well the project was managed. Everyone knew exactly what they were supposed to be doing and did it to a high standard, we had confidence in the team throughout the entire build.”
“Being in business myself, I know what a nightmare it can be liaising with different companies and dealing with the headache of it all.
SCAN TO VIEW THE PROJECT VIDEO
We knew from the start that we wanted one company who would handle everything and handle it well, that’s what set Origin apart. The fact that Origin also deal with the maintenance of their projects shows that they care, not just about their pools but their clients as well.”
“Origin had great lines of communication, the project was managed well and monthly meetings helped continually alleviate stress and kept us in the loop as we knew what was going to happen and when. Like most people, we’ve had some bad experience with builders in the past so it was very noticeable just how much better Origin were. They constantly showed and used their expertise to guide us, especially when it came to aspects of the build we were unsure on.”
THE RESULT
“Our daily routines have changed for the better since having the pool, even when you’re feeling overwhelmed or stressed we’re straight in the pool and getting those endorphins pumping!” “There’s nothing that we wish we did differently, a few things ended up changing along the way - like the positioning of the pool house and design of the roof structure but it ultimately all worked out and in our favour.” “What advice would we give to prospective pool owners? Use Origin! Seriously though, look at previous projects and talk to previous clients, use a company with extensive experience - Origin offer all of this and more.”

Upside down maisonette has the wow factor
Many people aren’t aware that a loft conversion can be carried out on maisonettes but as John Allen from Econoloft explains, providing it is done well, a loft conversion can transform this type of property.
“A maisonette can be surprisingly spacious,” he said. “However, a large part of the footprint of the home is going to waste, namely the loft!”
FROM ONE FLOOR TO TWO!
One family from Bromley lived in a maisonette property which comprised a front room, kitchen, bathroom and two bedrooms across one floor. They needed more space and and although they did look at moving home to get additional room, they soon realised it would be a very
expensive move.
Instead, they had an Econoloft loft conversion which transformed their unused loft into a luxurious, spacious living space comprising a kitchen, dining area and lounge. The customers stamped their personality on the space with white walls, spotlights, wooden floors and contemporary furnishings to create a modern and welcoming family area.
The original floor of the maisonette has also been developed and features three bedrooms, a new bathroom and a utility room giving the family two floors of living space to enjoy.
John said: “Like many of our customers this Bromley family could not believe the space they had in the attic which had been wasted for so many years. Now they love their new home which has provided enough space for them to grow at a fraction of the cost of moving home.”
Econoloft only builds loft conversions and with 40 years’ experience you are assured peace of mind. Unlock the potential of your loft.
ECONOLOFT EXPERT TIP
Although you don’t need planning permission for most loft conversions, you may need it on a flat or maisonette, particularly if you intend to extend or alter the roof space. You should also check whether you own the roof space and leaseholders may need permission.
