Contemporary suits, exciting brands Whilst the rest of us have been adjusting to the end of summer, the guys at exclusive St Albans menswear store D. Copperfield have been planning their new Autumn/ Winter collection for almost a year.

“I

t’s hard to gauge what the consumer is going to be looking for a year ahead,” explains Harrison Block, the store’s owner, “but that’s a big part of our business…being on the pulse and always aiming to be ahead of the game.” Having recently picked up the St Albans Retailer of the Year award, Copperfield seems to have discovered the knack for picking exactly the right brands for their customers, at just the right times. So what’s on trend when it comes to suits? “A suit is now less of a uniform, more an expression of style. We have recently opened our basement as a traditional style suit room, with classic tailoring brands such as Ralph Lauren and Hackett of London, sat alongside more contemporary brands like Paul Smith and J Lindeberg. There is a large movement towards soft tailoring in the menswear industry, for those who don’t like the formality of a traditional suit. Daytime outfits are becoming a little bit dressier and incorporating the

22 SEPTEMBER 2015

occasional diluted version of formal pieces. We are seeing a lot of guys wearing softer fabrics, such as flannel or jersey, and less formal fabrics like tweed and checks.” Always on the lookout for new quality brands to introduce to the gentlemen of Hertfordshire, Harrison is excited to be adding a new name to an already impressive portfolio… “The Italian brand, Barena, has been on our radar for some time now. With its history on the shores of the Venice estuary, the brand has been built on unrivalled fabrics and simple silhouettes. They have the soft tailoring business mastered, with many of their pieces being reinterpretations of garments found in museums – or antique prints depicting everyday Venetian life of a bygone era. Each of Barena’s collections respects tradition and unites this with the use and interpretation of high-quality, natural fabrics – from wool to linen.” So, with this growth in soft tailoring is the tradition of business suits dead? Not so, according to Harrison: “Our suiting business had a slow few years but we have seen a large increase recently and have adapted to accommodate this. The idea behind brands like Barena is to link in with this new way to wear men’s formalwear… things to wear out of the office, but not totally removed from the clean cut suits we’re familiar with.” Another brand coming soon is Richard James: a modern suiting company but with the traditions of Saville Row. This will enable Copperfield to offer made-to-measure suits using the very finest fabrics and tailoring expertise – but with the convenience of a local retailer. “St Albans is a commuter city and we want to offer the city worker a place to come and feel relaxed, while trying to find the perfect suit for their work.” THE DETAILS 3-5 Chequer street, St Albans, Hertfordshire AL1 3YJ ••••• 01727 835175 www.dcopperfield.co.uk

Sorento

Introducing the

K

ia’s all-new seven-seater Sorento, available from Brayley Kia’s dealership in Harpenden, offers a host of refinements and new technology that set new standards for luxury SUVs. Paul Brayley, Managing Director of Brayleys, drove on holiday to Spain in one this year and this was his assessment. “Kia’s third generation Sorento is major step forward on all fronts. It’s such a pleasurable car to drive and handles all road conditions effortlessly. The light but responsive steering provides optimum maneuverability with the option of reduced power assistance when in Sport mode for a more weighted steering feel. The latest version is longer, wider and lower with more interior space. It’s also faster and more economical, thanks to Kia’s improved 2.2-litre R-Type diesel engine that now meets the updated EU6 legislation on emissions. The version with six-speed manual gearbox accelerates from 0-62mph in nine seconds, marginally quicker than the automatic model and will return almost 50 miles per gallon on a long journey. The gearbox is satisfyingly smooth and the engine delivers a punchy and hefty 441Nm of torque,

24 SEPTEMBER 2015

so it’s perfect for towing too. Whilst earlier generations of the Sorento focused on practicality as well as value, the new model features exceptional levels of quality down to the very finest detail, which result in a car that’s stylish, refined, practical, fuelefficient and affordable in equal measure. On the outside, the Sorento has had a significant makeover. Despite its seven-seat credentials, it has a modest rather than excessive road presence, helped by a new grille and rear spoiler, which all combine to give a sense of luxury. Inside, Kia has boosted the boot space by almost 100 litres to a whopping 605 litres with the third row of seats folded. The second row of seating folds completely flat making it easier to slide longer objects in there’s a new under floor storage compartment too. Space in the back provides enough headroom and legroom for the tallest of occupants and in the third row, there’s plenty of space for kids, so the Sorento is perfect for busy family life.” All-new Kia Sorento highlights include: • EU6-compliant 2.2 CRDi engine: up to 49.6mpg and CO2 emissions as low as 149g/km • Bluetooth with voice recognition and music streaming • Seven seats with split options • Intelligent all-wheel drive • Choice of four trim levels: KX-1, KX-2, KX-3 and KX-4 • Power/torque: 197bhp/441Nm The Sorento starts at £28,795 on the road. The Conundrum of Modern Communications in Schools Christopher Wilson, Headmaster, Lockers Park Preparatory School

T

he way the world interacts has evolved dramatically over the last two decades and the problem of how and when to communicate is particularly acute for schools. 21st Century private schools provide a very different product to their predecessors. Today’s parents want to be more involved in their child’s education, something that delights modern educationalists because we believe that if school, parent and child work together, the child is more likely to reach full potential. This has meant more focus on the dissemination of information. The difficult decision that confronts all schools is the means and depth of this communication. We are all in that evolutionary time, exploring the best route to follow. Too little information and schools are accused of a lack of transparency. Too much and parents lose vital details amongst the day-to-day news items, or possibly just end up not reading any of it. Then there is the constantly evolving landscape of social media. Parents are at different stages in their adoption of social media and while traditionalists may prefer an appointment or a phone call, others will only read texts, tweets or emails. And of course, should a health issue arise, a telephone call is the only real option. But what constitutes a health issue? For most, a grazed knee would not require a call but for some this will be cast as poor communication,

2 SEPTEMBER 2015

presenting schools with a tricky lose-lose situation. Most schools have a communications strategy and a clearly defined calendar approach. Websites are pivotal, parent portals and intranets are increasingly the norm, charting a child’s progress, conduct and so forth. There is likely to be a combination of regular epistles and newsletters, while digital news screens around schools have become more prevalent. Not only does this require an army of communicators that historically didn’t exist, schools know that however hard they work at distributing information, there will still be parents who miss something vital and will hold the school accountable. An interesting dynamic for prep schools is how to manage the final couple of years of parental liaison. Head teachers of senior schools often ask me to help wean parents off ‘too much communication’ and prepare them for the much more hands-off approach of a senior school. This can be quite an adjustment for those that have been used to frequent dialogue with an attentive prep school staff. The goal is to combine broad news with individually focussed communication. Our approach at Lockers Park, as a family-oriented prep school, has been to establish routines around our communications to create times in the week when we hope parents will check in. We also populate an information-heavy parent portal, use email for topical matters and promote our accessibility by teacher visibility for those all-important chats. When reflecting on this modern day conundrum, I am all too aware that I have focussed on the channels of communication. Now, if we were to debate content - tone, messages, dogmatism not to mention grammar that would be another whole discussion … THE DETAILS Lockers park, Lockers Park Lane Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, HP1 1TL ••••• 01442 251712 www.lockerspark.herts.sch.uk

An Education for Life

at Abbot’s Hill School

A

bbot’s Hill is a thriving and dynamic school for girls aged 4-16 years, situated in over 70 acres of beautiful parkland close to Kings Langley, Hemel Hempstead and the M25/M1 junctions. The school has a strong record of academic success and the girls who leave in Year 11 go on to study at a variety of Sixth Forms including St Albans School, North London Collegiate and St Albans High School. The school is a happy and united community in which every pupil is truly known as an individual and given the opportunity to challenge themselves, discover and develop their own unique talents. This is evident in the vast range of extra-curricular clubs on offer that provide a lively balance of sport, performing and creative arts, science and technology, journalism, problem-solving and debating. Abbot’s Hill prides itself on its pastoral care. The sense of being part of an extended family is frequently commented on by pupils, parents and staff alike. In such a nurturing environment, pupils grow naturally in confidence, are happy to embrace new challenges and eagerly take on increasing responsibilities. Pupils leave Abbot’s Hill fully equipped to take on with passion the challenges and opportunities life has to offer. In October 2015, we are opening a brand new all-year round Day Nursery and Pre-School for boys and girls aged 6 months - 4 years. Thinking outside

the box

T

hinking outside the box is something we are all encouraged to do and realise that we need certain skills to do so. Children at Aldenham Prep have every opportunity to gain these skills, but they also excel at what’s needed for thinking inside the box. After all, how do you know when to think outside the box through

Our children as adults will work in a world very different from the place as we know it today using problem solving skills learnt in Maths or leadership skills learnt when camping if you don’t recognise the benefits and restrictions of the box in the first place? From the child hesitant to read in Assembly we create the confidence to perform on the stage of the school’s theatre to a full house and a standing ovation. We take football skills which begin with Winnie the Pooh round a honey pot tactics to those which win tournaments and bring home the silver.

Back inside the box for a moment, what would you expect to find in there at Aldenham Prep? Knowledge and strategies, a love of learning and transferable skills would be high on the list and you would be right. Our children as adults will work in a world very different from the place as we know it today. We prepare them for that world by enabling them to come to know themselves and the part they can play in the global life of the 21st century. Sharing the beautiful site of over 110 acres with our Senior School we have the space needed for young children to grow and thrive, combined with superb sporting, dramatic and music facilities. Do you want your child to leave school with a box of facts ready to be used as necessary? Or do you envisage them with a box which they’ll dip into constantly for the rest of their lives? One that contains a strong work ethic, a desire to succeed, compassion and the self-belief to achieve? I look forward to meeting you and welcoming you to Aldenham Prep. – Mrs Gocher, Head of Aldenham Prep School THE DETAILS Aldenham Prep School has an Open Morning on Saturday 10th October 10.00am to 12.30pm followed by a working morning on Wednesday 14th October 9.30am to 11.30am. St Helen’s School, Northwood:

Transforming Learning

A

t St Helen’s we treasure the principles which have made us an exceptional school. Girls can develop their academic passions and co-curricular interests and become the future leaders of their communities and professions: teaching and learning of the highest quality, pastoral care which focuses on the needs of each individual girl, and an extensive and expanding range of co-curricular opportunities in music, sport, drama, community service and self-discovery. We are especially thrilled and proud that a team of St Helen’s girls was crowned “Company of the Year” at the 2015 UK finals of the Young Enterprise competition, and look forward to discovering what our students will achieve next. Equally importantly, we continually strive to improve every aspect of the educational experience which we offer; transforming the School in a way which is transforming the learning of every girl at St Helen’s and equipping her for the challenges of higher education and the world of work. We have already transformed learning in our prepreparatory department by building new covered outdoor learning areas and a new playground for our youngest pupils in Little St Helen’s, centred on an exciting pirate ship to allow imaginations to run free and the girls to scramble, climb and slide in safety. This will encourage outdoor learning, improve the girls’ co-ordination and balance, and enable them to grow in confidence. Our Junior School (Years 3-6) is undergoing a complete transformation; we have already broken ground to construct a brand new Junior School building, which will open in September 2016. Year groups will enjoy

permanent classroom locations with light and airy rooms and exciting “break-out” zones to encourage exceptional learning, and we have made extensive provision for specialist teaching in Music, Art, D&T, Science and Drama, along with the resources to stage productions and concerts. The single-storey arms of the Junior School will grow out of the contours of the estate and will be covered with vibrant living green roofs where the pupils will be able to learn about and explore the wide variety of plants they will find there. In the Senior School we have introduced a wide range of exciting curriculum developments: we have launched a bespoke Science course in Years 7 and 8 in which the girls learn key scientific concepts and skills through investigation and discovery, developing their scientific literacy and increasing their confidence in practical work, We have also introduced Latin as a compulsory subject into Year 7, to enable the girls to understand how languages are built. We are also transforming the oldest part of St Helen’s, School House, into a welcoming reception area and a suite of seminar rooms which are more suitable for learning in the twenty-first century. In the longer term, the Sixth Form can look forward to occupying renovated facilities in 2017, once the Junior School has moved into its new building. The world of education is constantly changing and evolving, and we are confident that St Helen’s is transforming to equip our girls with the skills, knowledge and understanding which they will need to excel in a transforming world. Preparing pupils for the 21st century

at Edge Grove

A

s Edge Grove embarks on a new academic year it is quietly confident that exciting times are ahead. Demand and interest from prospective families has continued to flourish and the pupil roll is larger than ever before in the school’s history. Led by a dynamic and inspirational Headmaster, Ben Evans, Edge Grove is a successful co-ed prep school for children aged 3-13 years where the best traditions are preserved whilst being forward thinking, progressive and always embracing new technologies and habits. At Edge Grove academic rigour is important and not compromised in any way. Its two well-established curriculums, the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) and the Independent Curriculum (IC) ensure that the most obvious intelligences are well catered for and developed. How does the school prepare its pupils for life in the 21st century? Creativity is at the core of everything it does, encouraging children to understand themselves, discover and explore their unique qualities and grow in confidence and self-worth. Whether it is getting their hands dirty in the Home Economics room using natural ingredients to create healthy food; in the art room creating a modern masterpiece or on the sports field, making their own history, Edge Grove children acquire qualities that will form their character and personalities. Technology and innovation is an important part of an Edge Grove education. Last year the school experienced

10 SEPTEMBER 2015

tremendous advancement in its digital learning strategy with more iPads available for pupil use, 165 new PCs available throughout the school, laptops for graphic design and a very popular 3D printer. Similar innovation will continue next year with an increased number of iPads allowing the curriculum and teaching to have greater creativity for all pupils. Learning will not be restricted to only the classroom and key skills such as reading, listening, poetry analysis and communication, will be extended and developed. Results last year were impressive with the school achieving its highest yet offer of scholarships and awards to 15 different senior schools, including Merchant Taylors’ School, Rugby, North London Collegiate, Harrow and Haileybury. Pupils left Edge Grove armed with courage and determination to seize life with both hands and make the most of every opportunity at their new schools. Edge Grove looks forward to welcoming prospective parents to visit the school to meet Ben Evans, tour the school and find out more about it.

The Value of Independent Boys’ Schools

L

ast year, only a few weeks after my move from Eton to take up my new role as the Academic Deputy Head at Merchant Taylors’, I was interviewed for one of the school’s magazines. This though, was not a publication run by the school for existing or prospective parents, it was a satirical magazine run by the boys, for the boys. The interview was enjoyable and there were a number of questions that kept me on my toes. The final question though, really got me thinking – it referenced a recent school assembly, which had extolled the importance of queues to the British psyche and went on to ask me if I thought that ‘private education was one big ‘queue-jump’.’ The answer I gave – and the boys’ response to it – is something that, I think, goes a long way to explaining why I love working in boys’ education in a school like Merchant Taylors’. My take on it was that, whilst it might be seen as a ‘queue-jump’ in one sense, in fact, parents and boys were actually joining a queue for a different ‘product’. The manner in which politicians agonize over Britain’s international ranking in education and use its lowly standing to – magpielike – pilfer the odd initiative from Singapore or Sweden to grab the headlines for a few days is depressing. It is depressing because it ignores the fact that we have some of the best schools in the world right here and yet they are not always seen as the model for success. We have schools that have embraced the virtues of a holistic education for several centuries. We have schools that teach and nurture independence, of both thought and learning. We have schools that teach a variety of different and exciting subjects and employ teachers who are, first and foremost, top-class academics in their field. We have schools that, for decades, have modelled the sort of healthy partnerships between parents, pupils, and teachers that will lead to pupils emerging as well-rounded and happy young adults. It is these schools, which are world leaders; many parents and children, move to London and its environs to access the top quality day school education that our best private schools offer. London is ever more an international city and whilst the driving force behind that is undoubtedly its role as a major financial hub, part of its attraction to those working in top international firms, is that they know that their children will be educated to a world-class standard if they come to work and live here. All that one needs to do is take a quick look at the number of British Olympians who were privately educated,

14 SEPTEMBER 2015

or at the number of stars of screen and stage who attended our public schools, to see that a holistic education is an integral part of our identity. First-rate facilities help in this respect, as we at Merchant Taylors’ saw when Australian cricketers, Messrs, Clarke, Smith, Hazelwood et al trained on our pitches in advance of this summer’s Ashes. However, it isn’t just the green fields we have held onto, bucking the trend of the past thirty years, or the excellent concert halls, theatres and recital spaces that exist in our public schools, that explain why so many of our pupils go onto enjoy success in so many areas of public life. For every Olympian, distinguished academic or talented actor will have at least one teacher from their school, who will typically still be there long after they’ve left, who inspired them. Such teachers will have shown that young mind that education is about more than the accrual of paper listing academic achievements. It is about developing the whole person and every rehearsal, training session and performance will have reinforced this message. The world-class academics at our top universities who were privately educated will have been exposed to a raft of opportunities to enrich their learning and broaden their horizons. The top-class international sports stars who attended our best schools will not only have strong academic credentials but also the ability to kick on from their sporting endeavours to life after sport. The top artistic talents will be erudite, interesting, and will have the substance to support their creative instincts. For most of those who attended a top private school, who don’t go on to perform on a global stage, there will be a level of exposure to excellence in all its forms and an expectation of success in life from all who are involved in their education. That this is something we manage to do, in an environment that still focuses on the individual and helps them to realise their own talents, is something of which we, as a country should be incredibly proud. – By Ben Horan, Deputy Head (Academic), Merchant Taylors’ School THE DETAILS Sandy Lodge Rd, Moor Park, Northwood HA6 2HT ••••• 01923 820644 www.mtsn.org.uk

Getting Girls to be ‘Future-ready’

Bronwen Goulding, Headmistress of St Francis’ College, Letchworth 3-18 years reflects on the importance of preparing girls for the future.

T

he breadth and depth of opportunity and the rich curriculum here, offer girls an excellent preparation for the global community which will be an integral part of their adult lives. The world we live now is a rapidly changing and dynamic environment powered by ever evolving technology. As this world opens up, so too does the opportunity for women to take up high profile positions in areas such as business and politics. It is important that girls practise and prepare for leadership, speak openly and compete publicly whether it is for high profile prefect roles, debating, or the school councils! St Francis’ College allows girls the chance to develop these skills and the self- belief which will help them succeed and become our leaders in the future. So often, girls are plagued by self- doubt and self -criticism. A girls’ only education ensures that the focus is upon the needs of the girls, using educational strategies which best serve those girls. It is for these reasons that 62% of our Sixth Form study STEM subjects uninhibited by gender stereotyping which other environments might foster. We aim to encourage girls to think analytically and critically, to stretch themselves intellectually and to prepare themselves to compete in an ever changing and competitive environment. It is important that they learn that failure is part of the journey to success and that they are capable of creating a successful future path for themselves. Truly independent research repeatedly demonstrates that girls flourish best and learn best when they are educated together. Our own results this year have been outstanding- 54% grades are A/A* at A level. In fact, far from suggesting that single sex girls’ education is old fashioned, I believe it therefore, to be forward thinking in its outlook and provision. We offer girls a’ future- ready ‘education rather than a ‘futuristic’ one.

The community offers a full time boarding and flexi boarding option which provides extraordinary breadth and depth for girls. It is a great chance for girls to develop social skills, in a unique way, by living and working with other young people. The College is enlivened by young women from Africa, Asia and Europe which helps to establish a valuable global and international perspective. Our community is further enriched by day girls from all around the Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire counties. This diversity helps the girls understand the interconnectedness of the world. I am passionate about the importance of stretch and challenge in the curriculum while ensuring the well-being of the girls. When one has a clear focus on intellectual development, creativity and personal development, I really believe that all girls will flourish and grow. St Francis’ College offers a chance to empower young women to make a difference to society both here in the UK and in a more global context. You will find that we are a unified community, from Prep to Sixth form, with one purpose- to prioritise the opportunities for and the development of our girls.

Think you know boarding?

Think again W

hen thinking about boarding schools, people sometimes struggle to overcome the stereotypical visions of draughty dormitories and poor food, and the view that boarding schools are for “other people” – for families based overseas, for those with connections to a particular school, or even for families who don’t much like their children. For many it is assumed that boarding means a child’s total absence from the family home for weeks at a time. These days are gone, and modern boarding schools, like The Royal Masonic School for Girls (RMS) in Rickmansworth offer outstanding pastoral care,

a family achieve a better work/life balance by removing the inconvenience of day to day issues, because all these activities are completed during the school week, leaving weekends free for unpressurised “quality time”. Flexible boarding also removes the parental guilt of arriving home from work just in time to say goodnight, or the pangs of leaving children with a nanny, or in the case of older children, alone; gone is the headache of clock-watching, or sorting out alternative and potentially last minute arrangements when work dictates you must travel or stay late, or when a crisis rears its ugly head. Flexible boarding makes sense even for pupils who live

Boarding has become highly flexible; it can be for one, two or three nights a week; it can be weekly a nurturing extended family coupled with a programme of varied activities that caters for all interests. Boarding has become highly flexible; it can be for one, two or three nights a week; it can be weekly; and even full boarding is punctuated by a weekend at home every three weeks. All boarders are offered a balance of relaxation, study and fun after school, with the added benefits of cooperative study and the acquisition of the soft skills that equip pupils to make good relationships in the future. They learn tolerance of others; they gain independence and awareness of community, and they make friends for life. Flexible boarding is the modern response to parents’ desire to provide their children with the best all-round school experience, whilst still spending time with them. It offers a practical solution to the problems faced by many modern parents for whom life is a balancing act between their own hectic schedules, and their children’s. If an average senior school day pupil travels up to 45 minutes each way to get to school, when equated to 7 ½ hours over the week, or a whole school day, the alternative becomes increasingly attractive. close to their school, because they get to spend time with their friends while their parents are busy. Whilst it offers a cost effective and practical solution for parents, it also has a social dimension for pupils, who don’t want to miss out. 21st Century boarding means pupils are not isolated in their afterschool hours, glued to a screen pursuing virtual friendships, but instead they are actively engaged in fostering real friendships in a fun and relaxed environment. Walk and Talk

N

ever has it been more important for young people to spend quality time outdoors . With so much attention on how engrossed young people are in their phones, iPads and laptops, trawling though their social media chat rooms and YouTube videos, educators have a duty of care to ensure they are experiencing the great outdoors. A number of scientific studies carried out in America have statistically proven that time in woodland space compared to urban streets significantly improves learning and memory, at all ages. This resonates well with our experience of a lifting of spirits whilst on a dog walk in the woods or a picnic in the park. Those fortunate enough to teach and learn in schools surrounded by acres of parkland might appear to have an easier job of ensuring young people take advantage of the outdoors for both leisure and educational experiences but the young of today still need encouragement to take those opportunities that are handed to them on a plate.

24 SEPTEMBER 2015

“Walk and Talk” routes around school grounds or using green corridors within towns and cities can make a big impact on the well-being of individuals. We have just such a route within our 180 acre estate of park land. Pupils and their Tutors are encouraged to walk round the course whilst talking and though the idea was not well received initially, the consensus of views is that this is valuable time spent in each others’ company, getting exercise, working through strategies for solving individual problems and most importantly, time spent not looking at an electronic device. – By Sue Wallace-Woodroffe, Headmistress at Princess Helena College THE DETAILS Princess Helena College, School Lane, Hitchin SG4 ••••• 01462 432100 www.princesshelenacollege.co.uk

An Enlightened Approach to Tuition

F

or parents and students, the selection of private tuition is undoubtedly one of the most important decisions in education that they will make. Private tuition can boost confidence, as well as results, and whilst for some students tuition is a helping hand, for others it is a last resort. With this in mind, looking for a tutor is evidently an extremely personal experience and as such, requires care and attention from both the side of the parent, as well as the side of an agency. Yet, the recent influx of tutoring organisations has left families frustrated and confused as to who will suit their child’s needs best. Agencies have essentially become two a penny with identical business models and more worryingly, identical tutors. However, Enlightenment Tuition has grasped a niche in the market- and one that is desperately needed. During his time as a freelance tutor, the founder of Enlightenment Tuition, Gideon Simberg, noticed a severe lack of communication between older tutors and younger students in existing tuition. He realised that it was his young age that ensured effective learning and as such, created Enlightenment Tuition- an agency comprised of University students and recent graduates. Enlightenment Tuition is there for students who wish to be taught by people who are active in their current field of study in order to reap the benefits of the tutors’ expertise and age. This innovative scheme does not only affect the relationships between the pupil and tutor, but the constitution of the entire agency itself is being influenced. The size of the agency strikes a perfect balance between the professionalism of corporate companies and the approachability of a family-run firm. For example, although tutors are encouraged by the agency to conduct their lessons in a friendly atmosphere, all

Enlightenment Tuition’s tutors are thoroughly vetted through a stringent application process and each is interviewed before being placed on the books. Ultimately, the wellbeing of the student is Enlightenment Tuition’s first priority. And their strategy seems to be working; countless success stories are appearing from both parents and pupils where grade predictions are being continuously surpassed. One particular example had a boy from one of London’s leading secondary schools achieve a low E grade in their Physics A Level mock examination and yet with just three months of work with Enlightenment Tuition, the same student achieved an A grade in the same paper. Enlightenment Tuition tutors are either studying at top Universities or are recent graduates to ensure that their students are taught with up to date and specialist knowledge, passion in each and every subject, and experience a unique mentoring atmosphere and a connectivity that is the product of a smaller age gap between tutor and pupil. They are currently offering instruction in major subjects in the Sciences, Mathematics, Arts and Humanities up to and including A Level qualifications. This fresh approach to tutoring is ensuring that Enlightenment Tuition is taking the private education world by storm- and their student’s achievements are doing the same. Investing in our Children … for their future

C

Hamish by Jennifer Hogwood

hildren naturally love art – painting, drawing, making music (or was that noise!) and more and more people are asking the question: What can you give a child that will last forever, offer an investment later in life and more importantly something they can always cherish? Well art is certainly an affordable medium to consider. If a child has a painting on their wall throughout their childhood the likely hood is they will take it with them when they leave home and every time they look at it, it will evoke memories of their childhood …now that is priceless. Researchers from the Michigan State University have found a very strong correlation between childhood engagement in the creative arts and measurable success later in life. Children who were exposed to a wide variety of arts and crafts were more likely to create unique inventions that were worthy of patents, come up with ideas good enough to start a new company, or publish provocative papers on science and technology. The researchers suggest that children exposed to arts and crafts are able to think “out of the box” since a lot of working with hands involve figuring out how to solve problems creatively. After studying many scientists, Co-authors Robert and Michele Root-Bernstein reached this conclusion: “The most eminent and innovative among them are significantly more likely to engage in arts and crafts avocations” than the average Joe. Engaging children with arts and crafts has many positive qualities in their development and the more parents can encourage this the more benefits their children will gain. • Celebrate your child’s artwork – hang their drawings on the wall or save it in a folder. That way, your child feels that her creation is important. • Read books – Ask the librarian at your school or public library to suggest books about artists and the arts. • Notice the arts all around you – take your family to museums, concerts, or theatre. Notice the art even in the parks, subways, and open spaces. Start a conversation about what you see. • Enjoy the arts at home – share your artistic skills and

interests with your children. Find out what your children love about the art. • Arts introduce children to cultures from around the world • Children can blossom and excel in the arts even with physical, emotional or learning challenges, they can experience success in the arts. • Arts build confidence. Because there is not just one right way to make art, every child can feel pride in his or her original artistic creations. So next time you are thinking about what to buy ‘think outside of the box’ and don’t forget the child within which too many of us do as we get older. Embrace art and embrace our new generation! Today’s treatment is non-invasive and not painful at all and best of all there is no downtime so you can get on with your day straight after treatment. One treatment lasts as long as 18-24 months – and best of all the results develop over time as, once your tissue has been ‘woken up’ with the ultrasound waves, it starts working harder improving the results more and more as the months pass. That means that nobody but you will notice any specific change – although you’ll certainly get more than your fair share of compliments! The Ultherapy works at up to 3 levels and has been FDA-approved in the USA for lifting the jawline, neck and décolletage. This is the only system which has been proven to be so effective. Its causes significant collagen production and lifting of the skin providing a youthful look with no injectable products at all. It is extremely popular in men and women and even celebrities like Jennifer Aniston love the treatment because of its effects and no downtime. Ultherapy is safe, comfortable and has no downtime so you can return to work, go to lunch with friends in nearby Harpenden or hit the shops down the road in St Albans and nobody will be any the wiser. http://j.mp/NoJowls THE DETAILS Riverbanks Clinics won ‘Best Aesthetic Clinic’ in the UK three times from 2009 -– 2013. ••••• Feel free to visit our website www.riverbanksclinic.co.uk or call my friendly team on 01582762877.

You don’t have to be stranded on a desert island to take full advantage of coconuts. They’ve fast become one of the most popular ingredients in beauty, buoyed by endorsements from supermodels like Gisele and Miranda Kerr, who swear by the tropical treasure’s benefits. hether enjoyed as food or used on the skin or hair, coconut has multifunctional beauty perks, according to Alex Thompson, nutritionist at Holland & Barrett. “The small molecular structure of coconut oil allows for easy absorption,” Thompson says. “This makes it an ideal ointment for the relief of dry skin, or conditioning hair, but equally it can be eaten on salads or used as cooking oil.” From skincare to scents, coconut fever is in full force. very time I walk into a department store or turn the pages of a glossy magazine, I’m bombarded with seductive-sounding beauty products. The choice - and pressure to spend - is endless, so I’m relieved when Biologique Recherge facialist Aime Biller promises to give my skin a bespoke workout. “She picks out products suited to my specific needs, rather than sticking to a one-size-fits-all approach.

It’s the central ethos behind the French brand, which despite being 35 years old, has only recently launched in the UK. Products containing a high concentration of botanical and marine extracts (and no nasties) are mixed on the spot, turning the spa into more of a science laboratory. Aimee works on half my face at a time (using a very effective skin-pinching exfoliation technique), to illustrate before and after differences with gasp-inducing effect: one side is plumper, fresher and remarkably less sallow after treatment.

“I’m recommended products to use at home 70% of good skincare is what you do in-between facials, Aimee tells me - and I happily follow up on her advice. I haven’t been given the hard sell and, after 90 minutes of custom pampering, my skin has never looked better.” Biologique Recherche facials cost from around £100 for 90 minutes. “My care was fantastic, I had no pain at all.”

A

t times we can all take the basic things in life for granted, but something as simple as being able to eat and drink without discomfort is probably something none of us ever have to think about. For one patient at Spire Harpenden Hospital this wasn’t the case, Katherine Sully had a condition called Achalasia, this meant that the muscles in her lower oesophagus didn’t relax, which made eating and eventually drinking extremely hard. Here Katherine tells her story. “I was first diagnosed in 2008, it started as a mild problem where I was struggling to eat tough or starchy foods and I’d often get chest pains at night. Initially when I was diagnosed I had two procedures called balloon dilation, unfortunately this was with limited success. At the time I didn’t want to go down the surgery route, which was the option I was left with, as I had a busy life and the symptoms at this time were manageable. “After a while the problem progressed and I was struggling to drink liquids, at this stage it was really starting to impact my life. It was difficult to dine out socially with friends and family anymore and I was beginning to feel depressed. That’s when I decided I needed to take action. “I met Mr Al-Bahrani through my local NHS hospital initially, but I have private medical insurance through my work so decided I would use that to receive my treatment privately. He always gave me plenty of time to discuss my concerns about surgery and explained the risks as well as the positive outcomes, it was a very balanced discussion. I was feeling nervous about surgery but Mr Al-Bahrani was great at helping me through the process and easing my nerves. 74 SEPTEMBER 2015

“I booked my surgery date for a couple of months after my first appointment, this gave me a chance to inform my work that I would need time off and meant I could pick a date that I knew my partner wasn’t going to be away with work. I went in for the surgery on the May bank holiday and stayed for two nights, my care was fantastic, I had no pain at all. When I initially woke up I actually thought ‘oh no they haven’t done it’, but of course I soon realised everything had gone as planned. “Now I’ve had my surgery I feel absolutely amazing, I can eat whatever I like and I can drink now too. It’s only when something goes back to how it should be that you realise how bad things were before, I was obviously getting dehydrated which was making me tired during the day. Now I feel more energised and I’m having a much more balanced diet now too. I feel like a weight has been lifted. I recently went out with my family for a Sunday roast and I could eat the same as everyone else and not even think twice about it. “Although there were risks associated with the surgery it was worth it.” Spire Harpenden Hospital is located on Ambrose Lane in Harpenden and is able to see patients for treatment as both outpatients and inpatients. Treatment is available to patients who have private medical insurance or those funding themselves. Modern Elegance W

hen choosing the wedding reception venue for what will be the most significant and memorable day of your life, each couple must decide what is truly important to them. Is it the venue; somewhere stunning and beautiful that is steeped in history, but offers modern elegance? How about the quality and variety of the catering? This must deliver the “wow” factor for all guests and leave smiles on faces! Or is it the surroundings and location; do you desire somewhere that is well connected and easy to travel to, but provides a sense of isolation, calm and openness that relaxes all of your guests as soon as they arrive? With the goal obviously to tick as many of these boxes as possible (and more), we think that Hadley Wood Golf Club may just be the ideal venue. Set in 265 acres of mature, scenic parkland, the golf course was once a royal hunting ground during the reign of Henry V, but now sits under the watchful gaze of the majestic Georgian Clubhouse built in 1781. Welcoming up to 130 guests, the house is bright, elegant and relaxed, effortlessly combining classic with contemporary but, most importantly, providing an absolutely stunning photographic backdrop for your special day. Looking out from the Clubhouse, guests can admire not only the golf course but also the sweeping views of Hertfordshire’s countryside to the south. Many find it hard to imagine that such an idyllic setting can be found only 30 minutes from Victoria by train and less than 2 minutes from the M25. Tailoring your wedding reception to your needs is all part and parcel of the service offered by the staff at

Hadley Wood. In planning all aspects of the day the Club can offer the recommendations and support of a dedicated Functions Manager to ensure your day is a success. Hadley Wood’s Head Chef, Barry Jarvis, will take you through the sumptuous menu, showcasing available options and ensuring you choose the ideal dishes for your guests. All tastes can be catered for and the Chefs are passionate about getting the menu right for you both. Wine-lovers will also enjoy deliberating over the extensive and expertly selected wine list to have throughout your day. The staff at Hadley Wood are always on hand to assist with everything from arranging wonderful floral displays to coordinating the perfect music and entertainment for every moment of the reception. You’ll find the consideration and attentiveness you receive is exceptional and nothing is too much trouble. Finally, for accommodation nearby, look no further than West Lodge Park which is just half a mile from the Club. With 59 ensuite rooms, you and your guests can relax in comfort once the day is complete. THE DETAILS What are you waiting for? our wedding transportation is an important part of your Big Day so choosing the right vehicle is very important. Here at Charlesworth Classics you will find a varied choice of vehicles for almost everyone’s transportation needs; From the quirky and fun London Taxi, to the traditional White Rolls Royce. This year has seen a rise in the bookings for our White London Taxi. So much so, that we now have two, as well as a Black Grooms Taxi. Also under restoration for the Summer of 2016 is our Vintage Fairway Taxi (Ivory in colour) to join our already existing ‘Little Red’, Vintage Fairway Taxi. I know what your thinking why such a high demand, its only an old Taxi? Well here goes my explanation; These vehicles are an ideal Wedding car due to many features, starting with their quirkiness, an icon the world over. Everyone knows a Black London Taxi, they seat 5 people comfortably, therefore have plenty of room for all the bridesmaids. As for the Bride with her long train and unmarked dress the wide door openings and ample room keep them un-flustered and un-creased for the allimportant ceremony and pictures. Finally these vehicles are also equipped with disabled access should the need arise in any wedding arrangements. Our Classic White Rolls Royce Shadow I is a favourite with the Bride who is looking for that traditional Wedding Car, now over 40 years old this timeless classics has stunning white coach work with beautiful black leather interior, finished in wood this is the height of luxury and sure to turn heads. If you are looking for something more modern then our stunning Red Label Bentley may be more your taste, 18 SEPTEMBER 2015

with Blue coachwork and cream leather interior this car definitely makes its mark. Now let’s not forget the honeymoon, often over looked as it is after the Big Day, we offer our Executive Jaguar XJR. For your after party trip whether it be 10 minutes down the road or a couple of hours to the airport this is just as important a part of your wedding as the day so why not take the journey in style? Your first journey as Husband and Wife is very important to us at Charlesworth Classics and we would love to be a part of this journey.

Why Which Double Glazing Installer Homeowners Choose Is Important

W

hen a homeowner commits to making improvements to their abode one of the hardest choices they face is finding a reputable installer who they can be certain will a) do a quality job and b) stay in business, as the last thing anyone wants is to be scammed or left out of pocket due to negligent workmanship, or indeed a few years down the line find that the “guarantee” is not worth the paper it is written on. To assist householders and give them greater peace of 118 SEPTEMBER 2015

mind when appointing an installation company, consumer champions Which? established an endorsement scheme labelled ‘Which? Trusted Traders’. Back in 2014 the region’s largest independent double glazing manufacturers and installers, Hazlemere Window Company, joined this prestigious scheme after they passed an intense assessment process, proving that they met the strict requirements set out by Which? and satisfy the high standards they expect of a local and reliable trader. To be recognised in this way is an extremely prestigious

achievement’ for any supplier, particularly as 25% of traders fail during the assessment stage. It demonstrates to customers that those who achieve Which Trusted Trader status have proven themselves as having been trustworthy up to that point, and that they are firmly committed to offering complete fairness and transparency at all times. Having such status enables us to display the Which? Trusted Traders logo on all marketing materials which will give customers added confidence when choosing a double glazing supplier ahead of any other local installation company. Which? Trusted Traders also provides its own ombudsman service which supplies an independent dispute resolution whenever any issues arise between a customer and scheme member. This is just the latest in a series of industry recognised accreditations that Hazlemere Window Company Ltd holds, as they are also FENSA Registered Installers (No. 10589), ISO 9001 accredited for quality management and ISO 14001 for waste management, as they re-cycle all the old windows, doors and conservatories they remove. In addition Hazlemere provide an independent insurance backed warranty with every window or door or conservatory they install.

Hazlemere provide an independent insurance backed warranty with every window or door or conservatory they install Then in 2015 to further reinforce their credentials Hazlemere Windows became members of the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF), signing up to the GGF’s Consumer Code of Good Practice, ensuring any deposits paid by consumers are protected by the GGF’s Deposit Indemnity Fund. Some double glazing companies are sadly still renowned even in these more consumer informed times for dubious selling techniques - so it’s really little wonder that only around 6% of Which? members say they trust glazing firms. No wonder then, that the vast majority of Which? members who took part in the survey in 2014 decided to use independent double glazing installers to carry out work on their properties rather than use big brand names, with some citing the traders’ need to maintain their strong reputations in the community as the reason for going local. In 2014, Which? asked 2,872 of their members questions concerning their experience of double glazing installation and companies. All had double glazing installed in the previous 5 years with either a local/independent firm or a big name such as Anglian, Everest, Safestyle or Zenith. Which? asked them to rate the double glazing supplier they used for various aspects of their experience, such as quotation process and customer service. This Which? double glazing company customer satisfaction survey carried out last year showed that the big four national brands – Zenith (40% customer satisfaction), Safestyle (54%), Anglian (56%) and Everest (59%) did

not do as well as local independent companies and traders who had a much higher customer satisfaction rating of 82%. Which? is unbiased and are independent consumer champions, who say they buy every product they test and don’t accept at face value what any “advertising” might claim, so it is therefore advice consumers can trust. When deciding to replace windows or doors Which? advises that you should contact at least three glaziers and organise for them to visit you at home. Some double glazing companies still sadly use aggressive sales techniques. If whilst in your home a double glazing sales person starts offering time-sensitive discounts, or calls ‘head office’ and similar scams, then alarm bells should sound. The aim of each visit to your home should be for you to end up with 3 comparable quotes in writing and to meet the firm that will be spending days or weeks at your property. A good double glazing supplier should never pressure you into a sale – never agree to anything on the spot. As Which? advises “remember that the cheapest quote might not be the best.” Recommendations count for a lot in the glazing industry. If friends, family or neighbours can’t help, look at reviews for local glazing companies on Which? Trusted Traders. Seek evidence of appropriate specialties – as for example a double glazing company might be experts in aluminium or UPVC double glazing, or casement and sash windows or say timber windows. Those that rate well on customer service skills are more likely to resolve any future problems with the product or the installation.

Comprising 8 bedrooms, 3 elegant reception rooms, extensive cellars, double garage, formal gardens, swimming pool and a paddock on the opposite side of the road, this is an excellent family home perfect for a growing family who want the benefits of village life close to London. THREE AWARDS FOR FUSION RESIDENTIAL’S

PALAZZO

Fusion Residential has swept the board with no less than three honours in the UK round of the International Property Awards.

I

t is the third year running the Design House based in Letchmore Heath near Radlett has found favour with the judges in this, the world’s most prestigious property awards competition. After winning plaudits for Amara Lodge and Murano House in the previous two years, it is Fusion Residential’s fabulous Palazzo development in Beech Hill, Hadley Wood, which has caught the eye in 2015. And no wonder. As its name suggests, Palazzo is a palace, exquisitely finished and boasting a plethora of high tech yet practical creature comforts. With discrete gated underground parking in one of Hertfordshire’s most prestigious roads, Palazzo is a showcase of six sumptuous concierge serviced apartments with expansive outdoor terraces. They have only just come to market but such is Fusion Residential’s reputation and glowing endorsements from incredibly satisfied customers that three have already been sold. Throughout there are custom crafted features, the most modern fixtures and fittings, an eclectic mix of the very best from all points of the globe, and a spell-binding attention to detail which helps engender an incredible aura of achievement and satisfaction. To live here, one feels, is to truly live. Judges have awarded Palazzo in the best development category while its Penthouse is awarded in the best apartment category. Furthermore Palazzo’s marketing campaign, headed up by Adam

Horwood, has been recognised in the best campaign category for a new development. It seems it is in the Fusion Residential DNA to succeed and exceed all expectations in every aspect of the luxury home market. The award winning Palazzo Penthouse has now been launched at a price of £2.5 million. This is the possibly the finest apartment money can buy in Hertfordshire, and now, courtesy of the UK property awards, that’s official. Fusion Residential faced stiff opposition from some of the region’s most accomplished developers but the team won’t know which award they have won - either highly commended or 5-star – until the gala presentation dinner at the London Marriott Hotel in Mayfair on Friday, October 9. The Design House may even go on to represent the UK in the final stage of the competition later this year when it goes head-to-head with companies from Asia Pacific, Africa, Canada, the USA, Central and South America, the Caribbean, Arabia and Europe for the coveted crown of World’s Best Developer. Fusion Residential Managing Director Antoine Christoforou is justifiably thrilled with this latest honour. He said: “To be recognised three years running by the UK Property Awards is incredible. “It underlines the Fusion Residential ethos of striving for perfection in everything we do. “The team can be very proud that their imagination, innovation and incredible attention to detail has been rewarded yet again.” But, he adds, there is no resting on laurels. The team are already working on their next project in Ealing aiming to raise the bar yet higher in their quest to deliver the ultimate luxury lifestyle.

To experience the lifestyle on offer at Palazzo call Debbie Williams on 01923 216 535 or 020 8440 6329. Also visit fusionresidential.co.uk.
