Neighbourhood gastropub The Silver Cup in Harpenden has earned another award to add to its growing list of accolades, making it onto The Good Food Guide’s list of Britain’s 100 Best Local Restaurants 2023.
The prestigious Best Local Restaurant list celebrates the places that are the beating heart of communities around Britain. Using reader nominations as a driving force, The Good Food Guide team inspected a great number of restaurants in Central and East England to decide which ones deserved a place in the 100 Best Local Restaurants 2023. Some are old favourites, others are new to The Good Food Guide, all are brilliant places to eat.
The Silver Cup is continuing to gather acclaim for its imaginative menus, standout flavours and its warm and welcoming atmosphere. Independently owned and led by Michael Singleton and chef Matthew Reeder, the pair took over in spring 2020 and transformed the 19th century pub into a contemporary dining space, with a regularly changing set menu and a well-balanced wine selection, stylish interior and newly refurbished outside terrace.
Michael Singleton said: “We are thrilled to be on the list of 100 best local restaurants, especially as we were nominated by public vote and by those that love dining here. We have a fantastic

local following in Harpenden, where we feel there’s nothing quite like the dining experience we’re offering. Word is now spreading beyond Hertfordshire, with regular visitors from London who are keen to come and experience our highlypraised set menu, Sunday roasts and steak nights.”
Head chef Matthew Reeder has worked in the kitchens of top restaurants like Auberge du Lac, The Typing Room, The Galvin Brothers and Anglo in Farringdon where he was head chef. His superb seven-course tasting menu (£70) changes regularly and showcases the best seasonal ingredients. Current dishes include: Scallop, Sea Bass, Ponzu & Avocado; Cornish Sean Bream, Courgette, Octopus & Piccolo; Herdwick Lamb, Tenderstem, Anchovy & Mint; Jam, Toast & Earl Grey.
Matthew is a fan of nose-to-tail cooking, buying whole animals and butchering them in-house, using local produce sourced from UK farms and estates. Fish and seafood is sourced as sustainably as possible, including hand-dived or picked scallops and oysters. The team make all their own bread, stock, and ice creams and they preserve the best fruit and vegetables by fermenting, pickling and curing to keep waste to a minimum.
Aglorious day out on the golf course watching the future stars of ladies golf complemented by a delicious dining experience at the awardwinning Auberge du Lac is on offer at Brocket Hall in September when the Hertfordshire club hosts the Rose Ladies Open, hosted by golfing superstar Justin Rose and his wife, Kate.
Following the success of the inaugural
tournament last year, Brocket Hall will stage one of the foremost events on the Ladies European Tour Access Series from September 7 to 9. The tournament boasts the largest prize fund on the Access Series this year. What’s more, tickets are completely free, just register online at roseladiesopen.co.uk.
The field of 108 players will include defending champion, My Leander, as well as Tour rookie, Emily Price from England and Denmark’s Sofie Kibsgaard Nielsen as well as local player, Sophia Fullbrook, the current Justin Rose Telegraph Junior Golf Champion.
During the 54-hole strokeplay competition, played over the par-72 Melbourne Course, one of two championship courses at Brocket Hall, from Thursday, September 7 to Saturday, September 9, a range of hospitality offerings and public facilities will be open.
“Auberge’s head chef, John Barber sources the majority of his ingredients from the estate’s kitchen garden”
The tournament will be preceded by a Celebrity ProAm on Wednesday, September 6, which will give everyone a chance to spot a few stars from the worlds of sport and entertainment as well as the pros themselves.
After following the action out on the course, spectators can indulge in a luscious lunch prepared by the Auberge’s head chef, John Barber, who sources the majority of his ingredients from the estate’s kitchen garden and local suppliers to create a seasonal, modern British cuisine.
In addition to watching golf, there will be the opportunity to try out the game of golf thanks to The Golf Foundation who will be on hand for everyone to have a go at putting and hitting some balls. Children are more than welcome and the day is an excellent way of introducing them to the game and perhaps firing a lifelong interest in playing golf.
The Melbourne Course is one of England’s most picturesque championship courses with
its stunning views over the property’s glorious stately home and lake which is straddled by the magnificent Paine Bridge and its acres of rolling 18th century parkland.
There is no doubt that the demanding layout will provide the players with a testy challenge thanks to host of water hazards (it crosses the River Lea on no less than four occasions!), hanging fairway lies and sloping greens that will force the players to think about each and every shot.
Its memorable finish in front of the Hall itself after a short ferry ride to the 18th green will no doubt add drama to the action right down to the very last hole!
In addition to top level hospitality at the Auberge du Lac, Brocket Hall is offering hospitality packages from £66 per person as well as various other food options. The venue is easily accessible – and just 22 miles from the centre of London – and will provide free on-site parking.

Discover Auberge du Lac, the newly reopened lakeside restaurant in the spectacular grounds of Brocket Hall, a Hertfordshire stately home.
Set in the estate’s historic former hunting lodge, the atmospheric venue – with its idyllic terrace – is a wonderful setting with warmth and charm that has been a foodie destination for many years.
Continuing its story is Head Chef John Barber who joins the illustrious line-up of talented chefs in its history, including Phil Thompson and JeanChristophe Novelli.
At just 32 years old, John Barber has already
enjoyed an incredible career. Following an intensive apprenticeship at The Mandarin Hotel Group in London and Thailand, stints abroad in Paris with famed chef, Charcutier Gilles Verot, and New York at Bar Boulud, Café Boulud & Boulud Sud, John joined D&D Group and opened 14 Hills at 120 Fenchurch Street, London.
The opportunity to put Auberge du Lac back on the map following a three-year closure, has seen John relocate to Hertfordshire with his young family to start an exciting new chapter.
With his pedigree and passion, this young talent is creating a whole new dining experience
for guests. His vision? To make fine dining more accessible and relaxed, without any compromise on quality or taste.
Working closely with kitchen gardener, Lucy Hawkins, John is focused on sustainability and seasonality to enhance his modern British menu. Since joining the estate in May 2022, Lucy has transformed a one-acre site - using the no-dig method - into a fertile garden which is starting to supply Auberge with fresh produce all year round and support local biodiversity.
Dishes created by John make best use of her seasonal crops which are literally growing within metres of the tables where they will be served. This is soil-to-plate dining at its best.
As well as the exceptional la carte menu, there is a set weekly lunch menu, a seven-course tasting menu and weekly specials, allowing John to introduce more seasonal produce.
Considerate of the pressures of kitchen life and the wellbeing of his staff, John is an Ambassador for The Burnt Chef project which supports those in the hospitality industry with mental health issues. To support this cause, an optional discretionary £1 is added to the bill.
Auberge du Lac
Highlights from the a la carte menu include dishes such as Sea Bass Ceviche, Duck Liver Parfait, Brill fillet on the bone, clams, Scottish girolles and Welsh Lamb, confit tomatoes, black olive tapenade.
All diners, whatever menu they choose, start with a Welcome Snack and wherever possible everything is made on-site including the bread and butter.
On Sundays, a three-course roast is served with all the trimmings and children’s portions are also available, making this magical restaurant more accessible for families.
Head chef John Barber isn’t alone. He has assembled a whole new team of talents together, including pastry Chef, Ariana Machado who learnt her craft at iconic London brasserie, The Wolseley. With traditional techniques and innovative recipes, Ariana is creating the most delicate and delicious desserts to complement John’s menus.
Front of house, it is Scott Foster who ensures that the drinks, atmosphere, and service, match the excellence of John Barber’s menu.
With a wealth of experience in luxury hospitality including running operations for The Galvin Brothers, a warm welcome awaits all guests, old and new.
SSince reopening in April, this driven and visionary chef is fast establishing Auberge du lac as a destination restaurant once again. With regularly changing menus and a more relaxed vibe, it is certainly somewhere you will want to visit for the great food and great service in an amazing setting on a regular basis, not just on special occasions!

Close protection is a specialist security service often thought to be the reserve of the ‘rich and famous’. However, in the modern world of police cuts and an increase in crime close protection services have become ever more popular with families and business owners.
So, what is close protection and what does it entail? Close protection more widely referred to as bodyguard services, or personal protection is the provision of physical personal security to protect a person or group of people from harm or attack be it targeted or a general local threat.
Essentially, it is hiring bodyguards. Not your stereotypical burly bodyguard romanticised and depicted in TV and film, but a discrete nonimposing, non-threatening, professional close protection operative (CPO) embedded with a family or company that does not draw unwanted or unwarranted attention by undesirables. They are typically from a military or police background using their vast training and experience to keep clients safe from danger.
Despite how bodyguards are perceived, close
protection operatives do not spend each day toe-to-toe fighting off enemies. Research and planning are key, identifying threats and risks, and avoiding any verbal or physical altercations at all costs. Real-world bodyguards can blend in as family members, work colleagues, PAs, or nannies. Female bodyguards are increasingly popular with high-net-worth families for their stealth ability and emotional intelligence.
With close protection being such a vital service for high-profile and high-risk individuals and families it is important to hire bodyguards through a highly credible, experienced, and established security company that is licensed and insured to provide such services. It is worth noting that household staffing agencies cannot legally satisfy these prerequisites.
Westminster Security is a leading close protection company in the UK providing an array of personal security services in London, throughout the home counties, and beyond. Professionals in protection. Always on Guard. For more information visit westminstersecurity.co.uk or call 0207 123 4544

Musical Theatre Company brings “9 to 5 The Musical” to The Eric Morecambe Centre this October. Based on the hit 1980s movie of the same name, this hilarious and heart-warming show features music and lyrics by the legendary Dolly Parton and book by Patricia Resnick.
Set in the late 1970s this hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era is outrageous, thought-provoking, and even a little romantic.
Pushed to the boiling point, three female coworkers concoct a plan to get even with the sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot they call their boss. In a hilarious turn of events, Violet, Judy and Doralee live out their wildest fantasy – giving their boss the boot! While Hart remains “otherwise engaged”, the women give their workplace a dream makeover, taking control of the company that had always kept them down.
Hey, a girl can scheme, can’t she?
With a talented cast and crew, this high-energy show with plenty of laughs, memorable songs and easily relatable characters is a celebration of female empowerment and friendship. All of which make it the perfect show for a fun night out!
Director, Iain Fowles, said: “ This is a show that everyone can relate to, and we’re thrilled to bring this classic story to life on stage in Harpenden.
From the show-stopping title track to the hilarious “Heart to Hart,” it will leave audiences tapping their toes and humming the tunes long after the final curtain call.”

For this year’s Chamber Music Festival at Hatfield House, Guy Johnston has chosen a theme of family for his 12th Festival, celebrating the UK’s great musical families. At the home of the 7th Marquess and Marchioness of Salisbury, Guy welcomes back his brother violinist Magnus Johnston and his mother Gillian who will be in conversation with Kadiatu Kanneh-Mason, mother of Sheku and his celebrated siblings, about musical families.
Husband and wife duo Elena Urioste and Tom Poster bring along their Kaleidoscope Chamber Collective to perform throughout the Festival with star soloists. The grand finale in the Old Palace, former home of Elizabeth I, will be a performance of Haydn’s uplifting Creation with cousins Sophie and Dominic Bevan.
Guy Johnston commented, “All our concerts are made up of great friends, a married couple, siblings and family which is a wonderful way to share music at a Festival”.
The Festival also features a different family: past winners of the BBC Young Musician – oboist Nicholas Daniel (1980 winner) with his Orsino Quartet, Guy Johnston (2000), and horn-player Ben Goldscheider (finalist, 2016).
Composer Joseph Phibbs, whose hypnotic Cello Sonata was commissioned by the Festival a couple of years ago, has written a new Horn Sonata for Goldscheider. Other Festival highlights include outstanding soprano Ruby Hughes with Huw
Watkins and Festival regular and local clarinettist Julian Bliss with his Jazz Quintet.
To celebrate Hatfield House’s musical history, viol consort Arculo and vocal consort Ensemble Pro Victoria present a programme of verse anthems and solo songs from the reign of Elizabeth I. But above all, it wouldn’t be a Festival without the Saturday Family concert featuring author/illustrator James Mayhew with the Purcell School of Young Musicians in a wonderful concert of Leopold Mozart (the genius’ father), Vivaldi and some new commissions by one of Purcell School students. hatfieldhousemusicfestival.org.uk

Quite often people think that cash in the bank guarantees safety. However, in reality inflation gradually erodes it’s value, especially at the moment. If you do not intend to access this money in the short term then it’s worth considering investing in a diverse and tax efficient portfolio which will help protect the money from inflation which has the potential to outperform cash in the long run.

SEPTEMBER 2023 THE FINEST SCHOOLS IN THE UK
Celebrating our 150th birthday - Lockers Park has a strong history of providing excellent results by being purposefully small and inspiring an enthusiasm for life.
Our experience teaches us that our boys-only approach creates a culturally and academically supportive environment, free of the social pressures seen in a co-educational setting.
Allowing boys to convey ideas and solve problems without having to conform to societal expectations of what boys should be enables them to focus academically and express themselves more freely.
We offer scholarships to boys across all the years, including Reception. We pride ourselves on excellent Common Entrance results (100% pass rate). Recent leavers have joined Eton, Harrow, St Albans and Berkhamsted with a range of scholarships, awards and special commendations for exceptional exam results. Our optional Saturday School programme gives pupils access to lessons that will stretch their interests or allow them to build greater understanding in areas where they need more support.
Our sports teams are led by dedicated professionals, providing a large range of sports both in class and after school, as well as 23 acres for outdoor learning and forest school.
Habits of mind are at the heart of our curriculum. We use educational theory to adapt

our teaching which develops boys’ skills with a practical, problem-based approach. This focus on how boys learn best helps increase concentration in the classroom with fast-paced, interactive lessons.
We allow pupils the time they need to recharge their batteries through well-considered breaks throughout the day, building this into a longer school day. In fact, we offer wraparound care that is second to none. Boys can arrive from 7.30am and stay until 7.30pm, receiving three high quality meals and enjoying the teacher-run afterschool activities – with no extra cost.
Whether pupils come as a day boy, flexi-boarder or full-time boarder each one gains confidence and independence, boosting their self-esteem in a supportive environment. Friendships forged in the school frequently last a lifetime, preparing our boys for senior school, university and their career beyond.
St. Francis’ College offers a robust and stimulating educational experience, cultivating intellectually creative minds within a nurturing community. Through small class sizes, exceptional teaching and an integrated pastoral programme, students develop the confidence to have a go, make mistakes and try again.
In our fast-paced, demanding world, holistic student development has become paramount, which is why St. Francis’ puts so much emphasis on actively instilling the core values of DREAMS - Determination, Resilience, Empowerment, Appreciation, Motivation, and Security - in its students.
An annual highlight, Five Star Week, amplifies these values. This week-long immersive experience not only enriches students’ learning but equips them with essential life skills, encouraging them to embrace their dreams and thrive in all aspects of their lives.
Five Star Week encompasses competitions, creative projects, academic challenges and financial workshops where students are encouraged to set goals and work diligently to achieve them. Conquering hurdles and stretching their boundaries during these pursuits fosters a strong sense of determination that stays with students long after the week concludes.
Resilience emerges, enabling students to rebound from setbacks and confront challenges with courage. Through exposure to new experiences, unfamiliar environments, and challenging tasks, students push their boundaries
and step outside their comfort zones, learning to adapt, persevere, thrive in the face of difficulties and face future challenges head-on.
Empowerment arises as students uncover their talents, passions and strengths. Participation in workshops, leadership activities and vocational projects fosters self-assurance, helping them understand the potential within themselves. This newfound self-confidence fuels their embrace of individual capabilities.
Cultural engagements deepen empathy, respect, and gratitude. This exposure kindles an appreciation for diverse outlooks, nurturing compassion and inclusivity.
By engaging in activities aligned with their talents and aspirations, students find joy and fulfilment. This internal motivation propels them to pursue their goals and dreams.
St. Francis’ College’s collaborative ethos nurtures belonging and mutual support. Cooperation, shared experiences, and connections form a safety net for emotional well-being.
In embracing DREAMS, students navigate challenges, cultivate gratitude, and spark positive global change. St. Francis’ empowers students to stride forward with confidence and create a brighter world.

After concluding a comprehensive process, the Governing body were delighted to announce that Mrs Rose Hardy has been appointed as Head of the John Lyon School (incorporating Quainton Hall Prep School) from 1st September 2023. John Lyon is Northwest London’s leading all-through 3 to 18, co-ed, independent school.
Mrs Hardy brings to John Lyon a wide range of leadership and educational experience. She was most recently Headmistress at Haberdashers’ Girls’ School (Habs) in Elstree and has been instrumental in bringing to life their ambitious 10-year strategy, which centred around pupils at both single-sex schools at Habs working closely together. Before her time at Habs, Mrs Hardy spent five years as Head of St Margaret’s School in Bushey, a 4-18 independent girls’ school. She also served as the first female Head of the co-educational Sixth Form at St Albans School, before moving on to the post of Second Master, again the first female to hold this pivotal position.
Mrs Hardy read History at Somerville College, University of Oxford, then studied for a PGCE at London University. More recently, she completed an MEd in Educational Leadership. She is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. Mrs Hardy sees the move to John Lyon as the natural
culmination of her commitment to the highest standards of academic, pastoral and co-curricular education for all children and young people.
On accepting the role, Mrs Hardy said: “This is an exciting time for the John Lyon School as it continues the transition to a fully co-educational all-through 3 to 18 school and I am delighted to be appointed as Head. John Lyon School has a rich history and I am proud to have been entrusted with its leadership, working within the John Lyon Foundation and with the Harrow Family of Schools, for the School’s next chapter.”
Mr Giles Goodfellow KC, Chairman of Governors, added: “With a real wealth of experience delivering academic excellence, coupled with outstanding pastoral care, the Governors believe Mrs Hardy is exceptionally well-placed to deliver the next chapter of John Lyon’s development. Her passion for education at all stages, from Early Years through to the Sixth Form, convinced us that she will be ideally suited to build on the successful legacy Miss Haynes has delivered over the last 14 years.”
We are excited with what the future holds for John Lyon School as we extend the warmest of welcomes to Mrs Hardy.

Join us on Saturday 23rd September at our Open Day to hear from Mr Guest. stcolumbascollege.org
St Columba’s College is an independent day school for boys and girls aged 4 to 18 in St Albans, Hertfordshire. Since 1939, the school provides a Catholic education of ‘Head and Heart’ helping pupils to ‘understand and embrace our values of Courage, Courtesy and Compassion.’
In a testament to the school’s dedication to maintaining the highest standards, St Columba’s College is recognised as fully compliant and ‘Excellent’ in all areas by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI). This achievement reflects the commitment of the entire school community to provide an exceptional educational experience.
As we start the new term, it is now when thoughts turn to Independent School Open Days - allowing you to get a genuine feel for the school and whether on first impressions it is right for your child.
• Check on the school website if you need to make an appointment prior to visiting
• It is vital that you are prepared so read their school brochures thoroughly
• Take your child with you – their opinion is the most important. Children will get an idea whether they feel comfortable there.
• Talk to as many people as you can: pupils, teachers and the headmaster ideally
• Take an independent walk around with your child and chat about any reservations you might both have.
Some questions will differ according to your
child’s age and whether you are visiting a day or boarding school.
• How selective is the school academically and what is the current pass rate for the common entrance exam?
• Are there high expectations and high academic achievements?
• Is the curriculum broad and well balanced? (you want your child to be successful but not too compelled in pressure)
• What are the classroom sizes?
• What is expected of my child with regard to homework?
• Is there a healthy balance of fun and academia?
• Is there a bullying policy?
• What lunchtime meals are available?
• What sports and music facilities are available?
• What after school clubs and trips are available?
• How many pupils go out into further education? After the tour, you may have the opportunity to meet other parents and children on a more informal footing whereby the teachers and the head can answer queries over coffee and biscuits.
“Take your child with you – their opinion is the most important”
Merchant Taylors’ Prep School was created in 2015 as part of the alliance that was forged between Northwood Prep and Merchant Taylors’ School to provide a through school for boys aged 3 to 18. This has enabled us to continue to provide excellent education whilst developing our partnership with Merchant Taylors’ School. Our school is vibrant and dynamic and our pupils are educated by professional staff that provide a nurturing environment. We aim to instil values, such as compassion and respect, and learning dispositions, such as perseverance and independence, at the same time as ensuring the highest standards of academic achievements. We are proud that our school contains happy and confident pupils who are excited by the stimulating curriculum that we provide. Through these aims, we believe that education is about promoting intellectual curiosity in which pupils are motivated by and fully involved in their own learning. mtpn.org.uk

Local independent day and boarding school in Bushey, St Margaret’s, is celebrating the outstanding success of its GSCE results this year, with more than half of its students achieving top grades. It has been another exciting and challenging academic year for many students across the country and the Hertfordshire school is extremely proud to announce that 53% of grades achieved in GCSE exams this summer were 9-7, with one third of all grades achieved being 9-8. In addition, 11 GCSE subjects carried a 100% pass rate.
The school also bid a fond farewell to many of its sixth form students this summer, who have also achieved some phenomenal A-level grades, with many of them securing places at top universities in some of the best institutions in the country, such as UCL, KCL and Exeter University. An impressive 70% of A-level students at St Margaret’s School achieved A* to B grades, with 87% achieving grades A* to C.
Head at St Margaret’s School, Lara Péchard, commented on the student’s success: “This year has been a busy and demanding year for our students, but as usual, they have risen to every
challenge with resilience, courage and a focused approach to their studies. This year we have seen our students excel in their GCSE and A-level results, with many securing top grades, and that is testament to their determination and incredibly positive work ethic. It has been a real privilege to support this year’s cohort with their future pathways, and we wish them every success for their futures.”

St Margaret’s School is an independent day and boarding school for pupils aged 2 to 18 years. Based in Bushey, Hertfordshire, the school is steeped in history and is among one of the oldest in the UK dating back to 1749. Offering a range of flexible boarding options for both UK and international pupils from the age of 11 years, the school is set over 60 acres of beautiful grounds and places its renowned pastoral care and proven track record of academic success at the heart of its culture and ethos. With a rich programme of extracurricular activities, its pupils are encouraged to discover their talents in a caring environment that fosters a genuine enthusiasm for learning in an evolving world filled with complex challenges and exciting new possibilities.
Head Master at Bedford School, James Hodgson, who knows boarding from the inside (as head, housemaster, parent of boarders and a boarder himself) explains why he is such an advocate. “At Bedford School, our aim is for boys to be happy and successful – and I firmly believe that our commitment to boarding is fundamental to achieving this. Whether boys board for a few
days a week (flexi), weekly or as full boarders, the benefits are myriad.
With no daily commute to school, boarders benefit from more time each day to explore the countless and exciting academic and co-curricular opportunities open to them at Bedford. They have plenty of time to do the things that they enjoy.
Boys benefit from an extended support network - not only offering a wealth of professional guidance and advice on their studies but also guiding them through the complicated teenage years. Living with the boys 24/7, our Housemasters and their teams know and understand boys, and offer the highest level of care.
Boys also acquire many skills for life through boarding: quickly learning to be organised, to manage their time effectively and to plan ahead. They learn to think for themselves and develop independence from an early age – lasting skills that serve them well as they grow throughout the school, at university and beyond.” befordschool.org.uk

At STAHS we are always thinking beyond; that’s why everything we do is geared towards preparing our pupils not just for their next steps, but for achieving their long-term goals. We call this our Teach to 25 philosophy. Our vision is that each child is supported to become a happy, resilient young person who embraces life’s challenges and opportunities. STAHS students not only achieve excellent academic outcomes, but more importantly are prepared to live lives of consequence and make a meaningful impact on the world.
From our Character Education programme, which starts in Reception, to our super-curriculum that stretches pupils beyond the limits of exam specifications, to our formal two-year leadership programme for Sixth Formers, Teach to 25 runs through every aspect of a STAHS education. STAHS pupils gain the skills, independence and knowledge needed to navigate their path in the
critical early years of adult life.
We are very proud to be consistently ranked amongst the best independent schools in the UK. We have sky-high expectations for and of our pupils and our world-class teaching and rich curriculum help them achieve their ambitions. In and outside the classroom, our pupils are encouraged to and rewarded for giving their best, whatever their passions and aspirations.
Yes, our academic results are outstanding: 46% of A level students achieved all A* or A grades in 2023. But the range of courses, universities and other higher education options that our Year 13 leavers embark upon is as varied and individual as they are, and this time includes Central St Martins, two US universities and an accountancy apprenticeship, as well as Russell Group universities and Oxbridge. Rather than following the crowd, they blaze their own trails, and we could not be prouder of them. stahs.org.uk
Why an all boys school? There are of course obvious differences between the ways that boys and girls learn with significant research outlining the benefits of single-sex education, so of course, I can champion the merits for our all boys school. However, as a parent first and teacher second, for me it is not about Boys vs Co-ed, it is about finding the right environment for your son to flourish. Choosing the right school for your child doesn’t have to be an over-complicated decision. Ultimately, we all wish for our children to be happy, engaged and challenged, after all that is when we are all at our very best. I believe when you walk into a school you instantly feel if it is the right environment for your child.
I am proud to represent Aldwickbury as a dynamic and forward-thinking school but also an environment that retains and upholds traditional values. Our broad and balanced curriculum both in and outside the classroom allows boys the freedom to be themselves whilst ensuring they make excellent academic progress, preparing them
for not only for the next steps of their education but for life.
I invite you and your family to come and visit and see the school in action. Please contact us to book onto our open morning or to arrange a personal visit. I look forward to welcoming you.

Tomorrow’s leaders are being shaped in today’s girls’ schools by pupils who are resilient, compassionate and creative. Contrary to the misconception that girls’ schools are for the timid, research from the International Confederation of Girls’ Schools (ICGS) reveals that 93% of girls’ school graduates report more leadership opportunities and a more challenging academic environment than their co-ed counterparts while girls in co-ed environments often underperform compared to their male peers.
Being the Head of Abbot’s Hill, I know these schools are vibrant, inclusive spaces where girls actively engage in discussions and challenge prevailing norms. A 2021 study by the Girls’ Schools Association (GSA) showed that while boys are more robust in adolescence, girls’ schools foster greater resilience for girls than co-ed institutions. Girls’ schools’ unique curriculum, teaching style, and culture are tailored to help girls thrive.
Girls’ schools encourage girls to pursue their passions without societal constraints. As girls enter adolescence, societal pressures can make them more self-conscious. Girls’ schools directly address this, re-empowering them with an authentic voice and giving them the space to be unselfconscious and proud rather than ‘knowing their place’.
Girls’ schools provide tremendous opportunities for girls to lead, be it in leadership roles, as mentors, in sport, or classroom discussions. Consequently, they enter the workplace expecting to be heard, ready to be
leaders and striving to be innovators. The world still grapples with gender inequities, as evident from the #MeToo movement and this summer’s football World Cup final celebrations. The founding values of Abbot’s Hill School, to educate ‘young women of character’, therefore remain as crucial today as they were then.
Because in our ever-evolving society, strength of character is necessary to tackle challenges like climate change, AI, and global political unrest. Girls’ schools equip girls to confront these issues head-on. As the Head of Abbot’s Hill School and a girls’ school alumna myself, I know that girls’ schools emphasise collaboration, empathy, and kindness. The Organisation for Economic Development (OECD) predicts that the future workplace will value these skills above all others. Thus, the foundation for tomorrow’s world is being laid in girls’ schools today.

Before the rise of casual wear in business, it was smart, out-the-packet shirts for the office. Well, I thought they were smart.
Before the rise of remote working, I teamed them with off-the-peg-suits five days a week. I thought these looked dapper, too.
At weekends, practicality came before style: the sensibleness of not getting soaked while running errands.
I wore the same waterproof jacket from the outdoor chain store. And those browny-grey hiking shoes guys live in as they shuffle awkwardly towards middle age.
To the common eye, including mine, my clothes weren’t alarmingly ill-fitting. They weren’t blatantly tight, baggy, too long or too short – despite my denial about no longer being a medium.
Herts Tailors suggested that my ‘sensible’ clothes weren’t as well-fitted or comfortable as I deserved. Tailored suits for a wedding are one thing, but tailored coats, jeans, jumpers and loungewear for the weekend? That’s just ‘extra’, I thought.
Yet I slowly came round to the idea that my wardrobe for work, rest and play could work harder for me. I gradually realised the practicality
of hiking gear made me look frumpy and 15 years older.
The ease of slipping into gym wear when working from home became standard. Loungewear while working wasn’t doing my productivity, selfesteem and mental health any favours. None of my clothes flattered my body shape.
Herts Tailors took 16 different measurements for one of my shirts alone. They delved deep into how I wanted to look and feel. I personalised every item. My confidence, mental well-being and productivity have boomed. I no longer procrastinate about getting jobs done. My clothes sit inch-perfect, and I get complimented wherever I go – even on Zoom calls.
Whatever your gender, you won’t be wearing a fashion brand. You’ll wear clothes tailored for you, just how you like them. And Herts Tailors come to you.

September has arrived and with it comes a back to school mentality, new starts and a new season of fashion. With the change in season, weather and no summer holidays to look forward to, it can give you a new-year state of mind. So, in the spirit of new beginnings, why don’t you take a fresh new approach to your wardrobe. Working with a professional stylist can help you find a style that suits your lifestyle and your personality and gives you the tools to look stylish every single day.
Every day styling isn’t about looking like you’ve just stepped off the catwalk. It’s about finding the colours, cuts and looks that suit an individual’s shape, complexion and lifestyle. Your wardrobe should be balanced between key pieces that really signify the essence of your style, statement pieces that add variety to your looks and wardrobe heroes which are the hardest working pieces in your wardrobe and underpin every outfit you put together. When you discover a style you love, getting dressed will be easy and fun and your confidence will soar.
Here is how I can work with you to cultivate your own personal style and help you build a functional and fabulous wardrobe that allows you to express it.
The first step to finding your style should start with having your colours done. This will transform your look and your confidence by finding out the colours that suit your skin tone. And once you know which colours suit you will feel energised and look younger by wearing the right colours for your skin tone. Discover your natural, youthful glow, and the reduced appearance of wrinkles, blemishes and dark circles.
Discovering the clothing shapes that compliment your figure will take the stress out of changing room visits. Discovering the styles that suit your body shape could be the answer to the longer legs or a more defined waistline that you’ve been craving for years.
Have you got nothing to wear, but have a
wardrobe full of clothes? You need a wardrobe detox! It is thought that most women wear just 20% of what’s in their wardrobe. That’s a huge proportion of your clothes left unworn and money you have wasted on it. Spending a few hours on what you’ve already got in your wardrobe is the best place to start before heading off on any new shopping trips. Working together we’ll wrap up with a stylish organised and streamlined wardrobe that will give you new outfit ideas, inspiration and space to see what you have missing.
4. Shopping
Start wearing 100% of what you buy and love what you buy. Once I get to know you, understand your lifestyle I can pull together the perfect pieces to inject into your wardrobe, ones you will love to wear everyday. With 10 years experience as a personal stylist my aim is to give you the tools to spend your money wisely, only buy pieces that you need and suit you and to give you confidence to wear what works for you.

Colour – it’s here, and we’re rejoicing! Pigment has taken over the contemporary home, covering surfaces and dancing through rooms with its glorious joy de vivre and power to elevate atmospheres and moods. Be it a chromatic chair, a bright light or a vivid vase, chunks of colour in every size and shade are now permanent fixtures in our spaces, bringing smiles and moments of pure pleasure to life indoors.
But how to work this new kaleidoscopic disposition into our existing aesthetic? We’ve long been building calm, cool, collected minimal interiors, often with a distinctly Scandinavian edge – do our beloved pale woods, worn leathers and calm, forest-inspired hues work with these new flashes of fuchsia, smatterings of scarlet and pops of periwinkle? The answer is yes, yes, a resounding yes – and heritage Danish design brand Fritz Hansen is showing us how to bring the two together while maintaining that characteristic Scandi cool.
Fritz Hansen’s soul-enriching spectrum of shades has been crafted by an expert editorial eye, that
of Italian magazine editor, gallerist, entrepreneur and all-round creative virtuoso Carla Sozzani. The curated 16-piece colour collection features vibrant hues as well as the more tonal, from bold True Yellow and Paradise Orange to soothing Dusk Blue and Pale Rose and rich Venetian Red and Burnt Yellow. Formulated especially for the beloved silhouettes of the Ant, Series 7 and Grand Prix chairs by Danish icon Arne Jacobsen, Fritz Hansen’s hues lead the way in introducing timeless colour to modern, Scandinavia-inspired home tones.
As well as the bold, the Fritz Hansen palette is infused with classic Nordic neutrals that seem touched by nature, such as Deep Clay, Light Beige, Olive Green and Nine Grey. The muted nature-tinted tones slide easily into modern spaces already filled with subdued stony, sandy, snowy and stormy shades, allowing the more pigmented side of the collection to smoothly integrate into the room to build a colourful yet distinctly Scandi interior landscape.

the region’s existing accomplishments to move forward. Legendary Scandi design objects have the power to merge classic Nordic style with unexpected colours, effortlessly mixing into contemporary collections with their recognisable, time-honoured forms and creating new technicoloured timelines.
An enduring symbol of mid-century Danish furniture design, the Ant chair was conceived in 1952, its curved seat made from a revolutionary innovation – a single piece of moulded veneer. Now released with an upholstered front shell,
the historic contours have metamorphosed, emerging butterfly-like in radiant shades of textile that add new life to the world-renowned form and pave the way for a pared-back collaboration with the rainbow.
Similarly, the Fritz Hansen Kaiser Idell lighting collection also harnesses a fresh finish to carry it into the world of colourful contemporary interiors. Created by Christian Dell in 1936, the lights are a symbol of iconic Bauhaus design, their geometric forms, precise engineering and uncluttered style pointing directly to progressive Modernism. Originally available in dark, moody tones, when coated in a cheerful new finish Ruby Red, the lamps become more friendly and accessible – a 2020s spin on 20th century avant-garde. The gravitas and historic significance of the Fritz Hansen Kaiser Idell easily grant it the authority to invite colour into the home, the enduring icon reflecting ultramodern Nordic sensibilities via a sophisticated splash of scarlet.

Dark hues are set to have their moment in the spotlight, according to eco paint brand Victory Colours.
Sumptuous burgundies, forest greens, brooding blues and moody purples are going to reign as the weather cools and winter sets in.
Victoria Yardley, Victory Colours’ Managing Director, said: “We are starting to see a lot of interest in rich, deeper shades as homeowners look to warm up their homes for winter.
“These shades also fit beautifully with the rising cosy maximalism trend, which has seen homeowners embrace louder, bolder hues to
serve as a backdrop to their carefully curated interior spaces. They are the perfect shades to fit into interior schemes that have been styled with passion.”
However, there is one shade that Victoria believes will continue to prove popular as the temperatures plummet, even though it does somewhat fall out of the realms of the deeper shades that look set to dominate.
Victoria said: “Love it or hate it, shades that fall under the ‘Barbie Pink’ umbrella are still in demand!”

Complementing both raw textures and vibrant colours, Wallsauce predicts hints of metallic accents will adorn your interior design. One of the best ways of achieving this look is with one of the marble or watercolour murals at Wallsauce. Many of the designs have that luxurious gold strip running through them!
But don’t go overboard with this trend! It’s all about the hints.
Let Wallsauce inspire your year ahead with its top interior trends predicted to take over homes in 2024. From the trends of 2023 that will continue through 2024 to new ideas that will inspire your next projects, here’s what to expect for the year ahead.
In 2023, the industry saw stone textures emerging. Whether it has sculptured our vases or adorned our walls, the texture of stone has introduced raw design. Moving into 2024, we predict raw design to continue developing with the resurgence of marble and concrete. An easy way to achieve this look is with a surface texture wall mural. Whether you want the sophisticated marble look or the industrial look of concrete and rust, Wallsauce has a wealth of raw textured murals to choose from.
Despite raw textures becoming a trend, we also predict that vibrant colours will be on the agenda in 2024. Completely contrasting, this happy trend will bring positive vibes to any room. German artist Andrea Haase has a beautifully vibrant mural collection at Wallsauce. The detailing in her jungle designs is phenomenal, and her choice of colour palette is just what your home needs in 2024.
In 2022, Wallsauce predicted that in 2023 biophilia would be the must-have trend for bedrooms. However, it’s gone further than that. Expect to see more biophilia around homes, especially workspaces, if you’re still lucky enough to work from home! The population will continue to look for how to bring the outdoors in. Wallsauce has a best-selling jungle collection that is great for bringing in biophilia design. Team these murals with many house plants and straw textures to complete the interior trend. wallsauce.com
