THE POWER OF DANCE

S

howcasing vivid dancers with art that intertwines the cultural history of ethnic and sexual communities, the LA Dance Festival blurs the lines between past and present and visually connects them to our utopian futures. Combining various dance forms the show is a kaleidoscope of visual movement that encapsulates the dance genre and explodes the notion that traditional European dance forms must remain untarnished by change and international influences. Deborah Brockus of BrockusRED has magnetized 50 dance companies and their audiences to join in communion to celebrate the resurging live arts community that produces embracing experience that break down the third wall produced by television and movies. Combining athleticism with visual storytelling these artists attracted a tapestry of audiences all united in their thirst for the human connection that has wilted as social media has risen to prominence. With the support of the City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department, California Arts Council and the Los Angeles Arts Commission, Brockus produced a month long festival showcasing some of Los Angeles’ most famous choreographers and dance companies not limited to: the No) One Art House, Heidi Duckler Dance Theater, and Invertigo Dance Theater. New, Larger ‘Butterfly Pavilion’ Opens at NHMLA Outdoor living habitat features increased flight space and better viewing opportunities for 25 species of free-flying butterflies

T

he Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (NHMLA) has redesigned and re-built its popular outdoor Butterfly Pavilion exhibit, which opened to the public earlier this year, coinciding with the Museum’s third annual LA Nature Fest. Though it is still located on the south side of the Museum, the new and permanent structure has enhanced design features for its hundreds of butterfly residents: more vertical fly space, and a rounded structure that provides more light (which is better for flight) and more space for them to perch. In the airy and roomier pavilion, museum visitors will delight in the 25 species of butterflies flitting around in their new digs. Museum entomologists have stocked the pavilion with North American butterflies, which flutter among flowering plants inside the enclosed habitat. Visitors may stop to admire a chrysalis and marvel as colorful winged creatures alight on nectar-filled flowers. They will spot monarchs, buckeyes, malachites, and zebra longwings, among others.

In the Nature Gardens

There’s also plenty of butterfly activity outside the Pavilion. In the 3½-acre Nature Gardens, the immersion into all-things-butterfly continues. This outdoor botanical showroom features 6001 4 J U LY 2 0 1 7

plus species of native and nonnative plants that grow well in Southern California’s Mediterranean climate. The Nature Gardens’ Pollinator Garden, in particular, is a butterfly magnet. The garden attracts some species that won’t be inside the Pavilion, because they breed well in unrestricted, outdoor spaces: the fiery skipper, Hylephila phyleus, which lays its eggs on grasses, and the gray hairstreak, Strymon melinus, which lays its eggs on native buckwheats. Museum visitors will also see a host of butterflies getting a dose of the sugary nectar of lilac verbena and California aster. They may spot the cloudless sulphur, too, which lays eggs on the flower tips of the feathery cassia plants. Whether outside in the gardens or in the new Pavilion, visitors are certain to see a bevy of showstoppers in flight.

Ticketing Information

Museum Members and children age 2 and under are admitted to Butterfly Pavilion for free. Prices for general admission plus the Pavilion are as follows: Adults, $17; College students and seniors, $14; Children ages (3-12), $10. Regular Museum admission is: Adults, $12; Students and Seniors, $9; Children (3-12), $5. Museum Members and children age 2 and under are admitted for free. Because of the Pavilion’s popularity, we highly recommend purchasing tickets in advance at nhm.org.

Introducing platform

P

latform – a retail project by David Fishbein and Joseph Miller of Runyon Group – is Culver City’s prized shopping destination. Runyon purchased the properties in 2010 and initiated a careful restoration of the existing structures while adding several landmark new buildings to the campus. As a part of the Hayden Tract, the most dynamic neighborhood in Los Angeles, the center offers a collection of 120,000 square feet of curated merchants, chefs, and creative companies from around the world. Every chef, merchant, or creative company coming to platform is either first to market or creating a unique concept for platform. This thoughtful and selective approach to populating platform is what differentiates it from any other neighborhood. Platform is the flagship Runyon project and is an example of the firm’s ability to manage the entire development process including concept, entitlement, development, leasing and management. It is a testament to the changing landscape of not only Culver City (a previously under developed enclave of LA) but of the retail experience. Platform was built to be a collection of the world’s most innovative merchants, chefs, and creative companies, only allowing first to market or unique retail experiences to populate the site – Aesop’s first US day spa, Linda Farrow’s first US shop and more. A year in, and the project has shown proof of concept with three pop-ups going permanent, exciting new tenants populating like Sweetgreen’s HQ and restaurant, Soul Cycle’s West Coast HQ

and studio, many NY transplants from Bird of Brooklyn to Ten Over Ten nail salon, and a swell of retail and commerce in the neighborhood. Midland, Arcana, Destroyer, and more have swiftly followed Platform’s opening. They have also thought about the experience of retail in the digital world playing host to Vanity Fair’s influencer experience during award season, hosting a Pumpkin Patch brought to you by Jessica Biel’s Au Fudge, and a holiday market with Brooklyn’s favorite pizzeria Roberta’s serving up slices on-site.

In her shoes “It’s amazing what you can accomplish when you decide to make new choices in your life”

(that’s assuming it’s not during peak traffic) and I love having so many options for restaurants and shopping all over the city. For me, it’s the perfect place to live. Our house has a lot of outdoor living space and I love having friends and family over and entertaining outside.”

On her journey… “I started out as an actress, back in the day and worked in TV and movies until the early 80s. When I had my son, I decided to stop acting and start my own business. I created Born To Shop, one of the first shopping services in LA. I was helping a lot of friends get their looks together for events and openings and I loved it. Over the course of 13 years, it grew and morphed from personal styling to corporate gift shopping, to shopping tours, to working with the concierge at many big hotels in town such as the Beverly Hills Hotel and the Beverly Wilshire. When I moved to Vermont, the shopping service didn’t translate in a place where the nearest Target was an hour and a half away! So

Josephine Stevens speaks with Kathy Kelada, author of Be The Shoe

S

tudio City resident Kathy Kelada is the author of Be The Shoe – a beautifully illustrated book that women can have fun with. “Own who you are and step into your life. Don’t forget, you can always change your shoe! Be the shoe you want to be and live the life of your dreams!” she says. The book uses shoes as a metaphor for life – giving women a fresh perspective on their own lives, and inspires them to pursue personal goals with ease, style, and of course, the right pair of shoes. The book has came about from an observation of women and their very telling shoes. “I am a Strappy Sandal,” says Kathy. “I say yes before I say no, I’m open to possibilities, am light-hearted, love beautiful things and surround myself with them whenever possible.” Kathy grew up in Detroit and spent 20 years living in Beverly Hills. After ten years in the beautiful but cold Vermont, she moved back to sunny Southern California as soon as her children graduated from high school. She’s been here the past 11 years.

On LA… “I love everything about living here. The weather is divine so you can spend a lot of time outdoors. I love being a 30 minute drive from the beach 1 8 J U LY 2 0 1 7

“I created Born To Shop, one of the first shopping services in LA. I was helping a lot of friends get their looks together for events and openings and I loved it”

The illustrator

Bridget Davies

Be The Shoe features elegant illustrations by Bridget Davies, whose fine art and commissioned works have appeared on cards, framed prints, and a series of plates and platters at Anthropologie stores in the US and Europe.

I went back to school and got my Masters Degree in Education. I created courses for women called Life Mapping and ultimately began life coaching (although there was no official name for it back then). When I moved back to LA, I continued my life coaching practice and have been doing that ever since. And that led me to writing the book. What I’ve come to realize is that I’ve always loved change and I seem to have a gift for helping others through transitions and leading them toward self transformation. All these jobs have that common thread.”

On the ups and downs… “Well, as I said, I love transformation and I’ve always embraced change so my favorite thing is helping people get intentional about changing their lives and seeing the light go on when they ‘get’ it. It’s amazing what you can accomplish when you decide to make new choices in your life. My challenge now that I’m promoting the book, is continuing to commit time to my clients. My schedule can get crazy but I always try to make time for them. I’m doing more Skype and Facetime sessions these days.”

On the book… “I was working with a client – quite a few years ago now – and she was really having difficulty seeing things from a different point of view. She was stuck where she was but she desperately wanted to make a change in her life. I asked her, “If you were a shoe, what shoe would you be?” and she immediately answered, “I’m a workboot!” I described the workboot to her: it’s insulated; not much penetrating that exterior, has a crepe sole which is very grippy so you’re not moving or changing direction too fast in that shoe and that makes you pretty rigid. All the while, she’s nodding. I then asked her “what

shoe would you like to be?” and she thought about it and replied, “I want to be a flip-flop!” Well, a flip-flop is casual, spontaneous, very exposed, and carefree. There’s a lot of possibility for change there! From then on, every time she’d dig in and refuse to embrace a new idea I’d simply say, “What would a flip flop do?” and she’d nod and we’d change direction. I started wondering if other women would get this metaphor too and started using it in my classes and coaching. I even dragged my daughter and her friends into it and everyone seemed to get it. So I thought to myself, this could be a book!”

On support… “When you step into a new venture, the most important thing is to have your cheering section. I have been very lucky to have a lot of support during the process of writing and publishing the book. My husband and children have encouraged me and pushed me to follow my dreams and my lovely friends and clients have been open and honest

Bridget taught fashion and illustration in Milan, and worked there as an embroiderer and designer for a number of years. Upon her return to the UK, she resumed painting and illustrating as a freelance artist. While the range of Bridget’s work extends across various subjects, her pieces on fashion depict a uniquely attuned affinity for style.

“I wanted illustrations that enhanced the emotional connection I hoped the book would convey. I saw Bridget’s watercolor illustration of blue shoes on a blog I follow and knew immediately that she was the ONE. I never pursued anyone else from that moment on. She lives in London so I contacted her via email and made arrangements to meet her for the first time at a London Airport while I was traveling in Europe. We sat and exchanged ideas and the deal was sealed. From then on we worked via Skype and email with only one other face-to-face meeting (over tea) in London throughout the whole process. She is an amazing artist and she just keeps inspiring me” – Kathy Kelada

IMAGINATIVE NEW

INSTALLATIONS B

everly Center is running an ongoing art program during its renovation. There are several waves of work so the pieces are ever-changing as the construction work continues. This month we focus on art from the second wave – four imaginative, large-scale interior and exterior art installations created by contemporary Los Angeles artists. The program is organized by Jenelle Porter in association with the Hammer Museum. Look out for new artworks appearing throughout the renovation process, as a third wave of artists will be released later in the year.

Lisa Anne Auerbach: Strik Strikke, 2017 Lisa Anne Auerbach is known for artworks in various media that use humor and wordplay to subvert ideas of conventional handcraft and do-it-yourself ethos. Auerbach’s vibrant wallpaper for Beverly Center, located on Level 6, is composed of hundreds of sweater patterns with imagery that ranges from safety cones, cars and bicycles to feminist social movements and more. Amidst traditional Fair Isle patterns, the artist incorporates political slogans, satirical commentary and sly symbols. 2 2 J U LY 2 0 1 7

Ed Fella: Bits & Pieces & Fragments & Details, 2017 Ed Fella has been called “the contemporary master of hand-drawn typography.” His 60-year dedication to graphic design, language and information is unparalleled. For Beverly Center’s construction barricades, Fella created a three-floor installation. Level 6 displays Fella’s witty facility with words combined with hand-drawn typography compiled from posters, announcements and other ephemera. Level 7 is composed of photocopy collages of his drawings, created by manually transforming their size and legibility on a photocopier. The “badges” on Level 8 are composed of fragments of Fella’s typography and drawings.

Barbara Kruger: Untitled (Can Money Buy You Love?), 2017 One of the most significant figures in contemporary art, Barbara Kruger’s distinctive artworks often pair black-and-white photographs with provocative phrases. Some use only words in large, uppercase lettering to show that word and image possess equivalent powers of persuasion. Kruger’s new exterior work for Beverly Center poses the question “Can Money Buy You Love?” Installed on the

corner of Beverly and La Cienega Boulevards, the 60-foot tall banner invites us to think critically about the nature of power and consumerism.

Anthony Lepore: Four Way Stretch, 2017 Since 2012, Anthony Lepore has created his photography in a Los Angeles swimsuit factory founded in 1971 by his Italian immigrant grandfather. Working at the factory is inspirational for Lepore as he uses the swimsuit fabric remnants, cutting tools, sewing machine parts and even the factory’s workers in his photographs. Lepore’s photographs are installed as part of Beverly Center’s construction barricade on Level 7. His photographs capture scenarios of fabric, bodies and the factory positioned within a window frame that draws viewers’ attention to the reimagination of the center while transposing onto it a view of the artist’s own work space.

Julian Hoeber: Artists and Models, 2016 Hoeber, who typically uses a wide range of media to explore psychology, emotion and narrative,

created a large-scale installation exclusively for Beverly Center, which debuted in October. Hoeber’s work is a kind of seating pavilion composed of a curved billboard with an image of a woman’s face seemingly pressed against the glass. The façade wall is interrupted by a doorway that allows visitors to metaphorically enter the face, behind which is a sculptural bench and intricate floor that, together, form a distinctive space to relax in. Beverly Center is currently undergoing a $500 million renovation that is transforming every aspect of the iconic fashion destination. The project is creating a bright, contemporary and highly accessible exterior and interior that engages the center with the surrounding neighborhood, produces an effortless arrival, parking and departure experience, and offers a perfectly curated retail lineup and superior destination dining. The center will be open throughout the renovation that is scheduled to be completed by holiday 2018. a lavishly wrapped gift, and Balloon Rabbit (Magenta) (2005–10) transforms a balloon animal into a towering wonder of reflective curves. Mirror-polished voids swell to a giant scale, their converging twists and contours drawing the gaze into multiple vanishing points. The sculptures conflate the readymade and the monumental, transforming humble objects into abstract symbols of transcendence and the biological, reflecting and affirming viewers and their environments. In Ballerinas (2010–14) from the Antiquity series, Koons depicts figurines of dancers, derived from decorative porcelain, at the imposing scale of classical sculpture. Their delicate details and subtle color gradations, rendered in luminous, transparent color, present – somewhat paradoxically – as lessons in immaterial abstraction. Until August 18. agosian is pleased to present an exhibition of recent and new work by Jeff Koons. Making use of conceptual constructs including the ancient, the everyday, and the sublime, Koons creates luxurious icons and elaborate tableaux, which, beneath their captivating exteriors, engage the viewer in a metaphysical dialogue with cultural history. Koons draws attention to the continuity of images as they pass through time. The Gazing Ball series is grounded in distinctive narratives and art-historical precedents – from ancient classical sculpture to Rubens and Manet. In each work, a blue mirrored, hand-blown glass gazing ball – a convention from eighteenth century garden design – reflects its surroundings, uniting painting, sculpture, and architecture in order to multiply sensory experience. Balanced on the shoulder of Hercules, or introducing a dose of the surreal to the suburban harmony of a row of mailboxes, each gazing ball reactivates and intensifies familiar scenes, whether from legend or the everyday. The Celebration sculptures – as well as later works that expand upon their visual dialogue – made with mirror-polished stainless steel in layers of transparent color coating, epitomize Koons’s ongoing fascination with childlike consciousness and communication. The Autry Presents

California Continued A project that spans two new galleries and an ethnobotanical garden – the most transformative project in the Autry’s history

T

he Autry is a museum dedicated to exploring and sharing the stories, experiences, and perceptions of the diverse peoples of the American West, connecting the past to the present to inspire our shared future. The museum presents a wide range of exhibitions and public programs—including lectures, film, theatre, festivals, family events, and music—and performs scholarship, research, and educational outreach. The Autry’s collection of more than 500,000 pieces of art and artifacts includes the Southwest Museum of the American Indian Collection, one of the largest and most significant of Native American materials in the United States. Now on view is the California Uncovered exhibition – the most transformative project in the Autry’s history. Through immersive storytelling and nearly 20,000 square feet of gallery and garden spaces, California Continued shares how traditional ecological knowledge gained through centuries of experience can help present-day residents understand and care for the California environment. Two new exhibition galleries present extraordinary art, artifacts, and personal ephemera, including many objects from the Southwest Museum of the American Indian Collection on view for the very first time. Beyond the galleries, a new ethnobotanical garden features more than 60 native plants and activities that explore how generations of peoples, especially First Californians, have made use of plants and water. Connecting and complementing each of the experiences, a dual-screen projection room reveals landscapes and close-ups across California, from deserts to the coasts.

The Life and Work of Mabel McKay Explore the Autry’s first-ever solo show dedicated to a Native American woman’s life and work. Mabel McKay (1907–1993), a Long Valley Cache Creek Pomo woman from Northern California, represents a fascinating modern figure who maintained traditional ways. McKay is celebrated as a master basket weaver, traditional healer, advocate for her community and the environment, and teacher who shared her knowledge of Pomo traditions worldwide.

Focusing on four key California stories – Salmon, Fire, Desert, and Plants – Human Nature reveals how traditional ecological knowledge can help current residents understand and care for the environment. Vividly illustrated with Native American objects and contemporary artworks, photography, soundscapes, and multimedia displays, the exhibition investigates the ways in which culture and ecology merge in the California landscape. In the outdoor ethnobotanical garden, discover Californian plant species and examples of their past and present uses. Designed by landscape architect Matthew Kennedy (Ponca), the 7,000-square-foot space comprises seating and relaxation areas, a wetlands cove, pond, waterfall, basalt columns, and a California Oak tree. An interactive digital guide offers detailed information about the garden’s many elements.

California Road Trip Through the close-up dual projection film, embark on a virtual journey to California’s most scenic and varied landscapes. Sights include: the extreme desert climate of Death Valley, the lowest point in North America; the idyllic ocean bluffs of Big Sur and the central coastline; the starry skies of Joshua Tree; the majestic giants of the California Redwoods; and the supreme elevation and jagged granite faces of Mt. Whitney, unforgivingly the highest summit in the contiguous United States, reaching 14,505 feet into the clouds. SETTING A TREND K

een fashion shoppers will be aware by now that Peri Arenas’ second store is open on North Robertson Boulevard. Building on the success of her Veri Peri store at the Parker Palm Springs, PERI.A is her latest creation, and it supports the re-emergence of Robertson Boulevard as a fashion epicenter. Peri grew up in Miami beach and after college, moved to New York. Four years ago she came to LA and made Brentwood her home. “I love living in Brentwood because it is a great place to raise a family. You are five minutes from the beach, two hours from the mountains, 15 minutes from Beverly Hills, 20 minutes from Malibu and 25 minutes from Downtown LA. I love the weather,” she says. She has always had an interest in the fashion world, and spent some time modeling in Miami. “What struck me most was the interest that everyone had in the brands and accessories that I was wearing to the shoots. I always knew that I wanted to do something in fashion and was first given an opportunity to open a store at the Parker

Palm Springs Hotel while I was still living in New York City. Once I moved to LA, I started looking for a space to open a store that would reflect my taste and personality.” The new store, PERI.A, stocks brands such as Vivetta, Mira Mikati, Derek Lam and Shrimps. Peri curates her assortment by finding “hot designers before they become hot gossip,” and introducing the most unique and special pieces you won’t find anywhere else. She is looking to shake the retail scene up. “I believe that fashion in America has become safe and I’m ready to bring back a thrill to the art of dressing by inspiring women to wear what excites them.” The boutique showcases limited edition and custom pieces like graffitied Louis Vuitton straps. She spends time traveling the world looking for designers that have yet to burst onto the scene. “Rhaul Mishra is the perfect example,” she says. “The moment I saw his collection I knew I had to carry his designs in my store and I am the only store in the US carrying his SS/17 collection. This Fall you will see his line in a lot more stores as people are starting to pick it up. I am

not interested in following the trend – I am interested in setting one.” The 2,400 square foot store has been designed by renowned LA interior designer Lynda Murray whose work has been featured in ELLE Decor, LA Times, Angeleno and many more. It’s no surprise that Peri comes from a family of successful entrepreneurs starting with her grandfather, Jack Parker who founded the famous Parker Palm Springs and Le Parker Meridien.

“Peri curates her assortment by finding “hot designers before they become hot gossip” Everything in the new store is something that Peri loves herself. “One for me and one for my store!” she says. “I really love everything in my store because it is so well curated. For instance, I love Japanese designers. Gunda, I love his clothes and jewelry. He works with vintage items and makes new pieces so that everything becomes one of a kind.” She also favors Very Short, a new designer who makes overalls using vintage fabrics and patches, Filles A Papa, Mira Mikati, and Re-Worked Louis Vuitton bags. PERI.A sold all 16 of these bags in the first month so it is definitely doing something right! Going forward, Peri hopes to connect with shoppers from New York, Miami, Chicago, Paris, London, Tokyo and the rest of the world via the PERI.A website. And what’s her top styling tip? “You must be comfortable in what you wear. I always tell women wear what makes you feel sexy, happy and great!” PERI.A seems a great place to start. American Icon, British Style F

words: George Phillips

or decades, the special relationship between Great Britain and the United States has been one of great cooperation; a demonstration to the rest of the world of what can be achieved when two progressive nations work together. Today though, in these times of global disarray, it is easy to forget some of the wonderful achievements of these great countries. In London, England, however, a quintessentially British brand is reminding the world what can be accomplished when these old allies put their heads together. The brand in question is the Chelsea Truck Company (CTC), a luxury vehicle manufacturer which takes the best that a nation has to offer and adds good old British sophistication. Positioned on the famous King’s Road in Chelsea, its beautifully refined vehicles are sold to the most discerning clients across the globe. By starting with rugged and symbolic 4x4s from countries around the world and making them more usable with luxurious enhancements, the CTC breathes new life into vehicles, introducing them to a whole new audience. Its latest creation, the Black Hawk, is heading to the U.S. and upholds the best of each country’s automotive expertise. A combination of British refinement and rugged American ability, it is quite possibly the ultimate transatlantic collaboration. Capable off-roader, sun seeking convertible and now a luxury cruiser, the CTC Black Hawk really is all the car you could ever need. Based on a Jeep Wrangler, it was designed with one guiding principle in mind; American icon, British style. As such, it preserves the celebrated character of the famous

4x4 whilst adopting a more contemporary look both inside and out. Body armour, bespoke wheels and purposeful tyres are just some of the Black Hawk’s exterior enhancements, whilst the interior is adorned in swathes of hand-trimmed leather and bespoke detailing. The overall effect is one that manages to be both striking and subtle at the same time. Outgoing but not outlandish, as it rolls on by the Black Hawk attracts nods of approval, rather than rolls of eyes. It showcases the best of both British and American design and when you sit in one you realise how powerful that combination is. It truly is a thing of beauty. By bringing the Black Hawk to the USA, the CTC prove that even in these tumultuous times, whilst many nations are looking inwards, looking outwards and working with others opens up, quite literally, a world of wonderful possibilities. www.chelseatruckcompany.com

ust in time for summer, Culina at Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills is launching a new sumptuous and healthful dessert menu that will have guests saying yes to slinky swimwear as well as to decadent treats. “We find that many of our guests are focused on wellness, and often request healthy menu options without dessert, so we created this guilt-free, yet very delicious new menu,” says Michael Newcombe, General Manager of Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills and head of the company’s Global Spa Task Force team. Using fresh, topquality ingredients at the peak of flavour, Pastry Chef Federico Fernandez has expertly created nutritious, plant-based versions of popular desserts, with an elegance and artful twist that one would expect from Four Seasons. Standouts include Cococado, a decadent chocolate dessert rich in antioxidants, that utilises the silken texture of whipped avocado for creaminess and healthy fats, and is sweetened

with agave. Topped with a chewy brownie and a refreshing avocado ice cream, this treat will take guests back to their youth, before one would even think to ask, “is this gluten-free and vegan?” It is, but no one would be able to tell. Antioxidant rich, metabolism-boosting matcha takes center stage in Matcha Moments, a delicate green tea ice cream with a pillowy matcha meringue; and the more purist Fruit Frenzy offers a swirl of tropical colors and flavours in the form of grilled pineapple, papaya, mango, fresh vanilla bean, agave and lime zest. With the best chefs, and a little ingenuity, the forward-thinking culinary team at Four Seasons is giving guests the nourishing treats that everyone wants (and deserves!). The new dessert menu at Culina is sure to entice with bold, rich flavours, yet are free of gluten and dairy, so guests can have their cake and eat it too. T

he acclaimed Côtes de Provence region in France has long been known for its exceptional climate, soil and as the world leader in the production of premium rosé wines. VieVité (pronounced Vee-Veetay) is created at Domaine Sainte Marie, a renowned vineyard dating back to the 18th century and known for its true expressions of Provencal Rosé wine. Located just 21 kilometers west of Saint Tropez, Domaine Sainte Marie stretches over 45 hectares of land; with bountiful southern exposure and land rich in filterable siliceous soil containing michaschists, schists, and white quartz, adding to the depth and quality of VieVité Rosé. Year after year, Domaine Sainte Marie receives critical acclaim and industry award recognition for its consistently excellent wines, which benefit from the soft gradient slopes, and hot, dry days and cool summer nights. As one of the leading wines within the esteemed portfolio of Turquoise Life Beverage Brands, VieVité is offered in two varietals: the fresh and delicate VieVité and the limited cask VieVité Extraordinaire, sourced from older, time-tested vines. Both exceptional expressions of Provencal Rosé wine pride themselves on their unique vinicultural history, with the wines exemplifying the rare and old Grenache vines from which they are harvested. VieVité is produced from grapevines averaging 25 years old, and offers a fresh and delicate aroma of cherries and strawberries coupled with notes of spice to create a satisfying sensation on the palate with a forward fruit nose of peach, grape and apricot. VieVité Extraordinaire is sourced from 80year grapevines and produced in smaller quantities, capturing the attention of true rosé connoisseurs for its opulent fruit flavors and exuberant panache. This deliciously vibrant Rosé delights with its intense and wellbalanced fruit flavors, dominant with strawberries and berries, and structured with an intensity that highlights the old vines it is made from. Both wines have been declared as exceptional examples of true Cotes De Provence Rosé by wine lovers and critics alike. Rosé wine has been gaining in popularity in the U.S. each year as more and more new wine drinkers are educated about the production methods used to make it; how the process of allowing the red skins of the grapes to macerate for a shortened amount of time gives it its signature hue. Not to be confused with the similarly colored White Zinfandel wine of years past, true Rosé wines are absent of an overly sweet taste, which allows their quality and flavors to shine. Turquoise Life Beverage Brands offers both VieVité and VieVité Extraordinaire across the United States in fine restaurants & bars, luxury resorts and hotels as well as wine boutiques. VieVité is also available internationally in the Netherlands, Turkey, and Greece. Whether paired with a brunch, dinner, an ocean breeze, a poolside lounge, yachting or barbequing, VieVité is an ideal choice – any day – and all day. www.vievite.com

obu Malibu opened in October 1999 and has since recently transitioned from its original location to a new beachfront property located at 22706 Pacific Coast Highway. Views of the ocean are available from nearly every seat, with outdoor patio seating, an exterior lounge and floor to ceiling windows bordering our fourteen seat bar from the beautiful Pacific Ocean. Reservations are strongly encouraged and can be made up to one month in advance. The Sushi Bar and Bar area offer full menu dining and are on a first come first serve basis. We also have some Malibu favorites created by our Executive Chef, Gregorio Stephenson, including Ribeye with Truffle Butter Sauce and Crispy Maui Onions, Heirloom Tomato and Snapper New Style, as well as Kobe Beef with Crispy Shiitake Mushrooms and Sugar Snap Peas. Executive Chef Gregorio Stephenson’s passion for food has taken him to major cities all over the world. Chef in the city of Chicago. While in Chicago, he earned the distinction of Best Restaurant by the Chicago Sun Times for Coco Pazzo. In the late 1990’s, Chef Stephenson received the exciting honor to cook at a dinner for the James Beard Foundation, an organization dedicated to educating, inspiring, and fostering a deeper understanding of our culinary culture. Chef Stephenson has been with Nobu Malibu since its opening in 1999, and has earned great acclaim there. Stephenson admits to drawing inspiration from his customers and lives by his philosophy, which is simply to “get out of the food’s way and let it speak for itself.” Seeking to delight others with his savory sushi creations, Chef Toshiyuki Shiramizu began culinary training in Japan. After his studies, which included a brief stint learning the art of French cuisine, Shiramizu accepted a position with Nobu Hong Kong. Since 2000, he has been improvising on Nobu’s inventive dishes and promoting a positive and motivational attitude among his team. Standing proudly today as the Head Sushi Chef of Nobu Malibu, Shiramizu continues to impress his guests with his expertise. He values lifelong learning from art, literature and close friends, and integrating that philosophy and passion into sushi-making.

TRIED &TESTED Can a laser-emitting gadget zap away your crow’s feet? Laura Wurzal puts Tria’s new device to the test... “Specifically designed for wrinkles and lines around the eyes, Tria’s latest handheld laser device delivers thousands of microscopic laser lights when it comes in contact with the skin, to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin - the stuff that keeps you looking youthful! - so it’s important your skin is properly cleansed before use. Once ready, I started the treatment by gliding the tip of the laser in small circular motions, as advised, around my eye sockets, starting underneath the eyes and moving up to my temples. It was a tad painful at first - a stingy, pinprick sensation - and it took me a few days before I could tolerate using it for a full minute per eye. The treated area was noticeably red afterwards, but it calmed down overnight, so I carried on zapping away every night for eight weeks as recommended. And it was totally worth it! From the second week, my crow’s feet looked less defined and the skin around my eyes looked smooth and firm. Friends even noticed and asked if I had changed my eye cream or tried a new spa treatment. Now that’s what I call a result!” SmoothBeauty™ Eye Wrinkle Laser, $199, www.triabeauty.com

loving london style We love the slouchy tailoring and toughenedup outerwear in Victoria Beckham’s collection – it comes in the form of parkas, bombers and boyish coats. Smoky grey London skies infiltrate the color palette. Foggy tones ranging from slate to dove are used across knitwear, outerwear and separates. A double-faced grey and cream cashmere blend cocoons the wearer, as seen on blanket-style coats, whilst the new Oversize Shearling Jacket is offered in concrete grey or classic black. The notion of being a tourist in your own city is explored, with traditional sightseer’s paraphernalia inspiring a variety of wardrobe options. Silk scarf prints decorate granddad shirts, casual dresses and this season’s take on the pyjama suit. Denim takes a new direction – a streamlined selection is proposed, focusing on clean and classic silhouettes and including premium Japanese denim. There is an emphasis on refined styles, which sit comfortably alongside the tailoring within the collection, blurring the distinction between jeans and trousers. Tones are muted or crisp, encompassing greys, blues, and a dark raw wash that comes plain or embellished with sequin panels. Prices range from $230 – $2,470. www.victoriabeckham.com

Special Editions and collaborations The Bologna-based fashion house Hettabretz and Collezione Automobili Lamborghini together for the first time present a limited edition of three pieces of outerwear for men and for women, each in thirty numbered pieces. This co-branding is inspired by the common DNA of the two Italian excellences with the objective of creating unique pieces. The design of each model evokes the hexagonal lines typical of Lamborghini cars and the metallic accessories are conceived to exalt the uniqueness and the craft production of each piece. The combination of fine kangaroo leather and the image of carbon fibre is ideal to represent the strength and the elegance of the two brands. The linings are in orange silk, the must-have color of the super sports cars and have the symbol of the Y

London for top dining Elite Traveler, in association with Grey Goose, names London as one of the best dining spots in the world in sixth annual poll

L

ondon has been recognized as one of the world’s best dining destinations, according to the sixth annual poll of its readers by luxury lifestyle publication Elite Traveler, in association with Grey Goose. A total of three London restaurants feature on the Elite Traveler Top 100 Restaurants in the World this year – tying with culinary hot spots Chicago, Hong Kong and Tokyo. The Fat Duck makes a welcome reappearance following last year’s stint in Melbourne and is the UK’s highest entry. Head Chef Jonny Lake described London as one of the hottest dining destinations in the world: “I think that London is one of the most exciting cities for gastronomy. There’s such a huge range of different cuisines and influences and novel ideas, and so many chefs are coming to open restaurants all the time.” On being featured on this year’s list, he added: “Industry awards and accolades are one thing, but ultimately everything we do is for our guests, so for us to be on this list, curated by diners themselves, feels great.” Nottingham-based restaurant Sat Bains also featured on the list for the very first time, making its debut in 94th place. The list represents the continual strength and dynamism of London’s restaurant scene. The number one spot was awarded to Eneko Atxa’s Azurmendi in Larrabetzu, beating Grant Achatz’s Alinea for the very first time. On receiving the prestigious honor, he commented: “This recognition means a lot, as many of the voters would be people who have visited our restaurant. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing the joy and wellbeing of our clients. They are ultimately our reason for doing what we do.” The US has been recognized as the best performing country in the world, with 24 restaurants making the list, with Alinea (2), Eleven Madison Park (3), Per Se (5), The Restaurant at Meadowood (8) and Le Bernardin (9) all making the top 10. www.elitetraveler.com

Five out of the top ten most hashtagged tourist destinations in the world are in the USA, with California’s Disneyland coming out top

T

ravelBird love inspiring travellers to seek out new adventures and create memories that can be shared with friends and family. Many people, especially those in the Millennial demographic, use Instagram to both seek and share #wanderlust #inspo. Hashtags are used not only to document journeys, but to make it easier for those interested to find content they love. The travel specialists have now released the Most Instagrammed Tourist Attractions, a study ranking 470 attractions in many countries around the world based on the number of tags on the social media platform. With the image-based application most popular among Millennial users, TravelBird sought to use the information to gain an understanding of how global travel destinations measure up on social media. The results provide an in depth view of the best travel spots. A master ranking was created, which compares over 400 of the world’s most popular tourist destinations on their Instagram presence. “This study offers a compelling overview of hundreds of destinations that are beloved by Instagram users for their cultural heritage, their stunning natural beauty and their local charm,” states Symen Jansma, Founder of TravelBird. “Alongside this, the data also tells a fascinating story about the ways people are travelling in 2017, offering valuable insights for the travel and tourism industry.” www.travelbird.nl/most-instagrammed-tourist-attractions

London Dubai’s latest hotel opening is a thoroughly British affair. Lisa Haynes checks into Dukes Dubai for a slice of London on the Palm

meets

Dubai

“Dukes Dubai is the new Emirati sister of Dukes London, a Mayfair hotel steeped in British charm”

I

’m thousands of miles away from London but there is a beautiful Liberty print gracing my bedspread. I’ve checked into the newly opened Dukes Dubai and as well as the cacophony of Liberty florals clashing perfectly on the bed, I’m greeted with freshly baked pink macaroons sitting pretty in a glass bell jar and a sausage dog statue (Dukesy, the hotel mascot) holding a personalised welcome card in his mouth. I’m in one of 20 exquisitely appointed rooms on the ladies-only Duchess floor, specifically aimed at women travelling solo. And unless given advance warning, the only staff servicing your rooms are female. On day two, my housekeeper, Sushma, whips up the most extravagant towel animal I’ve ever seen in the shape of Dukesy the dachshund. Dukes Dubai is the new Emirati sister of Dukes London, a Mayfair hotel steeped in British charm, which celebrates its centenary next year. Located on the super-luxe artificial archipelago Palm Jumeirah, the hotel may have stepped up the glamour in line with the more-is-more Dubai aesthetic – think acres of white marble and jaw-dropping chandeliers – but it retains its British backbone and sense of formality. Walls are lined with black-and-white images of London landmarks and old school phone boxes, while lobby bookshelves house leather-bound

traditional works, such as Oliver Twist and the Waverley Novels. “We’ve really brought a quintessential British experience to Dubai,” says Debrah Dhugga, managing director of Dukes Collection, who’s flown back and forth monthly between Dukes London and Dubai for two years to oversee the launch. “In Dubai, there will always be the glitz and the glam, but Dukes Dubai is more about the level

of service and attention to detail.” Dukes has gone to (London) town to source a best-of-British offering for hotel guests who want a slice of England during their stay. Luxe bathroom toiletries are by Floris London (aka Her Majesty’s official perfumer), cheese has been drafted in from one of London’s oldest cheesemongers, Paxton and Whitfield, and the breakfast spread is made even more decadent with English bone china from William Edwards. But the hotel hasn’t gone overboard with everyday items like bottled water, which is sourced locally. Head chefs at GBR - the Great British Restaurant brasserie that’s new across Dukes Dubai and London - aren’t afraid to introduce subtle local flavours to traditional British cuisine, either. My freshly baked, warm bread arrives peppered with a dark red spice that I can’t put my finger on until I’m informed that it’s sumac, a Middle Eastern spice that gives off a citrusy taste. “Our most popular dishes so far seem to be the British comfort foods, like Lancashire hotpot, cottage pie and fish and chips, which isn’t necessarily what you expect in Dubai,” says Graeme Dodrill, head chef of GBR. “We want to reflect seasonality in the dishes, too. We definitely make good use of produce like English asparagus when it’s in season.” 6 8 J U LY 2 0 1 7

I indulge in a British extravaganza of prawn cocktail starter, Dover sole main (another bestseller) and Walnut Whip dessert. I then retire to the bar in search of another Dukes London signature export – the famous dry martinis, said to be the inspiration behind James Bond’s favourite drink. Bar staff have been meticulously trained by Duke London’s head barman Alessandro Palazzi to serve up the perfect Dukes martini - all with a dash of theatre from a tableside trolley. If you can prise yourself from that Liberty bedding, you can continue the London-meets-Dubai experience with a trip to Fortnum & Mason – their first overseas store sits opposite the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building. But then Dukes Dubai has the whole tea-andscones thing covered, too. Though I arrive during the soft-launch phase, Dhugga gives me a sneak peek at the hotel’s tea lounge, cigar lounge and hair salon headed up by yet another British export, Toni&Guy. Traditional Indian restaurant Khyber is also scheduled to open this month. Though not all the staff at Dukes Dubai are British, there is a familiar mix of accents – from cut-glass English through to Mancunian – that make you feel a bit like royalty. Right up until you say “cheerio” at checkout. Lisa Haynes was a guest of Dukes Dubai (www.dukesdubai.com)

Celebrity Edge:

A new cruise line for young, affluent travellers

C

elebrity Edge changes everything. The way you experience the world; the way you connect with the ocean; the way you play, dine and unwind at sea. Revolutionary on every level, she’s the ship that’s setting a new standard of luxury and innovation at sea. The way you cruise will never be the same again. Teaming up with some of the world’s best designers, Celebrity Cruises have created accommodation that has never before been experienced at sea. Royal Caribbean Cruises will be debuting the first of its five ships in December 2018, and each is projected to cost about $1 billion a piece to construct.

Let’s take a peek inside the world’s most high-tech cruise ship…. New Celebrity Edge Staterooms will feature an infinite balcony – touch a button and your entire living space becomes the balcony, letting you walk right out to the water’s edge. Their new Iconic Suites are the most luxurious and spacious in their fleet; while the six two-storey Edge Villas will boast 950 square feet of split-level, indoor-outdoor splendour. They have even created 178 connecting stateroom options, meaning you can connect different rooms for a whole new space. Guests can 7 0 J U LY 2 0 1 7

“Celebrity Cruises have created accommodation that has never before been experienced at sea”

spoil themselves rotten with Eucalyptus-treated cashmere mattresses from Italy, Bulgari bath amenities, butler service, packing and unpacking support, and even a bar with a personalised stock! Around the ship, guests can enjoy the resort-style deck with the main pool enclosed by a glass-like dome to allow for all-weather swimming and sunning. Six poolside cabanas will surround the pool as well as a martini-shaped hot tub. The deck is also home to the Solarium, a rooftop garden maintained by a dedicated horticulturist. The garden, designed by Tom Wright (Burj Al Arab Hotel), can be used for dinner and movie nights, private events or theme parties with live music. If you’d like to go for a run in the morning, check out the two-deck jogging track that’ll sit above the ship’s rooftop deck. Among Celebrity Edge’s coolest features will be its “Magic Carpet,” a 90-ton platform that will sit on the side of the ship and will move up and down the vessel depending on the time of day. The size of a tennis court, the platform will move like an elevator along the ship between deck’s two through 16. When stopped on the latter level, guests can enjoy “Dinner on the Edge,” via a 90-seat restaurant that will be open in the evenings. If the Magic Carpet is on Deck 5, it’ll be a lunchtime haunt while on Deck 14 it’ll act as an extension of the pool area. Instead,

you get cabins that extend to the end of the ship providing fantastic views and stateroom floor plans that are (on average) 23 per cent larger. Guests will be given RFID-enabled wristbands that enable guests to scan in and out of the ship at port or charge drinks to their rooms. Guests will also be able to check in, control their room temperature and unlock stateroom doors using their smartphone. Making it easier for passengers to make meal reservations or charge drinks to their rooms, guests will have the opportunity to do everything from their smartphones. With an incredible ship designed to highlight the destinations, they have decided to start in the corner of the world so often referred to as ‘paradise’ – the Caribbean. Celebrity Edge offers two sun-soaked itineraries from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. When it comes to extraordinary venues, Celebrity has the edge. www.celebritycruises.co.uk

Back to nature

There’s a whole world of color out there that could transform your home. Gabrielle Fagan talks to leading stylist Hans Blomquist about using everything from woods to weather as decor inspiration

ometimes nature knows best, but who’d have thought it also holds the answers to home decorating? Looking to the skies and the changing colors of the landscape is the newest (and highly welcome) alternative to struggling with perplexing paint charts, and it’s the method used by one of the world’s leading stylists. Hans Blomquist, renowned for his work as an art director with major home brands, including Ikea and Harrods, reveals that looking up to the skies whether sunny blue, stormy or rain-lashed horizons - as well as noticing the seasons, is his perfect inspiration for winning interiors. “It’s easy to take color for granted. We forget to appreciate the amazing, dazzling world that surrounds us, full of a million different shades that have the power to lift our spirits or soothe our mood,” says Blomquist, whose beautifully illustrated book, In The Mood For Colour: Perfect Palettes For Creative Interiors, is a guide to seeing color in a completely different light. “Nature is my starting point for any project. For my job, I’m lucky enough to travel the world and color surprises me wherever I go - I’m often transfixed by the different colors and lights I’ve experienced in different parts of the globe. Most of my inspiration comes from the colors of the natural world. There is beauty to be found nearly everywhere you go and nature always inspires me with its wonderful color combinations.” The perfect palette is out there just waiting to be seen, he says, and the easiest way of finding out what appeals is to take photos on your phone, of whatever catches your eye, over a period of time. “Next time you leave your house, whether you’re

passing through familiar landscapes or visiting a different country, look around and marvel at the variety of colors that surround you. You’ll end up with a collection of pictures which display a wide range of different colors and textures that will be a rich source of inspiration and help you refine your taste.”

BLUE SKIES & BLUE JEANS Blue’s a color that works especially well when you layer up different shades to create a tone-on-tone effect, and Blomquist promises it will result in a harmonious interior with a sense of depth and calm. “I consider myself a ‘blue’ person. Painting walls a deep blue will give you a sense of summer all year round, and you can add warmth with natural objects and colors,” he enthuses. “Denim blue, greyish blue, duck-egg blue, shades of blue that veer towards green, and anything in between are all favourites of mine. There’s nothing more comfortable to wear than denim, and it’s just as comfortable to live in a moody blue interior. Shades of denim can range from the deepest indigo to the palest, soft grey-blue.” DIP INTO BLUES: Anything goes with deep moody blues - light or dark, muted tones or bright clear, spring-like shades. In an interior, dark blue works as a neutral and looks brilliant either covering walls or used as a grounding accent in the form of textiles and decorative objects. Try layering different shades of blue from darkest navy to washed-out cornflower.

every other hue sits so well against them, especially the bright green of spring leaves,” he says. “While you may be reluctant to repaint a room pitch black, I’m sure you would be pleasantly surprised if you did, as it’s such a chic, comfortable color to live with. I wish I had more dark colors in my home. A dark backdrop can have such an impact and create a sense of drama, yet at the same time give a very calm and cocooning feeling. It also makes any other color stand out beautifully, whether it’s a single flower, a branch of spring blossoms, or a piece of furniture.” DIP INTO GREYS AND BLACKS: If painting a whole room seems too much, start with one wall or ceiling. Create a tonal wall by painting one solid color of matt paint in a dark color and then, using a sponge, apply a wash of diluted lighter paint over it. Repeat until you get the desired effect. Choose from deepest indigo, inky black, thunder grey and earthy brown shades. In The Mood For Colour by Hans Blomquist is published by Ryland Peters & Small, priced $19.47. Available on www.amazon.com

WASHED, BLEACHED & WEATHERED Natural color schemes have a depth and softness to them, says Blomquist, and feel so unmanufactured and true in their shades that they’ll always bring a sense of integrity to your home and make it feel warm, inviting and relaxed. “I’m always collecting pieces of wood from the beach and the forest. I use some to light the fire, but the sculptural pieces usually end up on display and inspire me in my choice of colors,” he explains. There’s nothing like the faded colors of smooth driftwood, washed vintage French linen, or antique grey painted furniture. I love everything about these soft, warm tones. I like to mix vintage and new, textural wood playing off shiny porcelain, and if you feel the whole is too bland, introduce some greenery - a single leaf or a pot plant can be the last extra touch needed.” DIP INTO PALE SHADES: If you have plain white walls, add layers of texture and introduce different shades of soft white to make a room more inviting. Layer textiles in different weaves or colors, hang a panel of vintage fabric as a work of art. A collection of vintage mirrors will reflect and accentuate any light in the room and is particularly effective in making a small space appear larger.

STORMY DAYS Towards the end of summer vivid hues begin to fade and moodier colors appear along with dark stormy days and autumnal earthy colors; this is a palette Blomquist recommends for atmospheric rooms. “Even though I don’t like rainy days, I love it when dark, thundery rain clouds roll in because their deep tones are astoundingly beautiful, and 7 6 J U LY 2 0 1 7

Ferrari and Poltrona Frau present “Cockpit”, the new office chair

F

errari and Poltrona Frau recently presented “Cockpit”, the first office chair ever design by Ferrari Design Centre. Produced by Poltrona Frau, that has upholstered the interiors of Ferrari cars since the 80’, it is neither a car seat nor a pure piece of furniture or design. It is a contemporary hybrid that

brings together two brands, a blend of automotive know-how and the culture of living that celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Maranello carmaker. An office chair that captures the excitement, the speed of the driver’s seat, as well as the passion for racing. The armchair has an architectural and modular structure, and offers expansion possibilities. For the moment two versions are available, the President and the Executive. Both comprise a reclining base and seat, integrated with two different backrests. The President is the managerial model with a high backrest that is inspired by the ergonomics of competitive racing seats. The Executive model, a chair that adapts to all work contexts, has a deliberately low and narrow backrest to ensure more freedom of movement. The design of “Cockpit a” synthesis of automotive innovation and inspiration and the materials are the same as those used in Ferrari cars, like the external shell moulded from carbon or alutex. The central band on the seat takes its cue from racing seats, while the swivel device sports the same design and mechanical elements as the steering wheel. For the leather upholstery, the Ferrari Design Centre team has chosen shades and finishes inspired by the trim of the three Tailor-Made service lines, which allow for the personalized configuration of the car: Scuderia, Classica and Inedita. Cockpit can also be customised in terms of its colors and materials. www.ferrari.com J U LY 2 0 1 7 7 7
