n 17 November 2016, Sotheby’s New York Contemporary Art Evening Auction will include Woldgate Woods, 24, 25 and 26, 2006, the first work from David Hockney’s famed Woldgate Woods series to appear at auction. With an estimate of $9/12 million, Woldgate Woods, 24, 25 and 26, 2006 is set to establish a record for the artist at auction. Grégoire Billault, Head of the Contemporary Art Department, noted: “David Hockney stands alongside Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud as one of the pillars of post-war British art. Ten years after we redefined the market for his work with The Splash, Sotheby’s is set to once again establish a new record. With the opening of the Tate retrospective early next year, along with collectors’ tremendous appetite for quality, now is the perfect time to
present one of the great accomplishments of the artist’s late career.” Throughout 2006, Hockney executed a limited series of paintings of the Woldgate Woods in his native Yorkshire, charting the changes in light and color as the seasons passed. Limited by the size of the canvas he was able to fit through the staircase at his Bridlington studio, he devised a method of using multiple canvases in order to achieve the desired scale. Woldgate Woods, 24, 25 and 26 October 2006, capturing the autumnal colors of East Yorkshire, is composed using six of these canvases. The huge public and critical success of this body of work has led to this quiet corner in the north east of England becoming known as ‘Hockney Country’, with the local tourist board even creating a Hockney Trail inspired by the locations immortalized in the series.

Adult Men’s Soccer in the San Fernando Valley and Ventura Country The Southern California Futbol Association (SCFA) consists of several adult soccer leagues (Over35, Over-40, and Over-48) serving both Los Angeles and Ventura County. Each division consists of three events per year; League, League Cup, and a Summer Cup. The SCFA League Cup tournament, which runs monthly starting in October and ending in March, is very similar to the English League FA Cup in that the teams in the various division are distributed randomly into groups. After group stages, the advancing teams go directly into a knock-out phase until we have a League Cup champion. All games are currently played on Sunday morning, starting as early as 7:15am and ending before 1 pm. Our goal is to provide a first class, well organized, and respectful soccer league for various adult age groups where they can compete with their peers and receive recognition for their efforts and achievements in an atmosphere of friendship and support. In this way, we can encourage adults to participate in a health and fitness oriented lifestyle in a well organized social structure.

riginally built in 1926 as the grandest of the opulent beach club hotels and the premier playground for Hollywood A-listers, Hotel Casa del Mar re-emerged in October 1999, following a $50 million restoration by Edward Thomas Hotels, parent company to the property. Today, Hotel Casa del Mar remains one of the most well-appointed addresses on the West Coast, with luxurious décor, sophisticated accommodations, lively public spaces, and an overall indulgent and relaxing ambiance. The hotel is adjacent to the historic Santa Monica Pier, the dynamic Third Street Promenade, the popular upscale shopping and dining areas of Main Street and Montana Avenue, as well as the gardens, walkways and expansive ocean panoramas of clifftop Palisades Park. Founded with a commitment to extraordinary service and privacy, the beachfront escape provides 129 beautifully appointed guestrooms, including 17 suites; the inviting and eco-minded Sea Wellness Spa; the private, guest-only Palm Terrace Pool; and a variety of dining options that explore the bounty of Southern California’s seasonal, farmers’ market driven fare. Signature dining destinations include Catch, offering a modern American take on seafood favorites, and The Lounge, featuring live music nightly and an expertly curated list of crudo and plates intended for sharing; and the brand new Terrazza, featuring inspired Italy-meets-California seasonal small plates. This entirely redesigned space will open at the ocean-facing end of the grand lobby lounge, offering guests nearly floor-to-ceiling views of the Pacific Ocean.
HISTORY Built in 1926 in Renaissance Revival style by Los Angeles architect Charles F. Plummer, the original “Club Casa” served as both an upscale hotel and beach club to the well-heeled. With plush Oriental rugs, intricately hand-painted ceilings, and heavy bronze statuary, the Club soon became the Pacific Coast’s “see and be seen” spot, renowned for its swinging social scene and frequented by many of L.A.’s Hollywood stars and moguls. The revelry lasted until World War II, when Casa del Mar was converted to a military hotel, followed
by—in 1959—the headquarters for the Synanon drug therapy program. The historic property’s final incarnation, prior to reemerging as today’s Hotel Casa del Mar, was as a Pritikin Longevity Center, which it maintained from 1978-1997. The property was later purchased by E.T. Whitehall Seascape Partners, LLC and, in 1999, restored to its landmark style.

To achieve this classic aesthetic, Los Angeles-based Darrell Schmitt Design Associates and Cheryl Rowley Design, who collaborated on the interior, used soft and simple lighting, as well as elegant materials favored in the 1920s such as damask and velvet draperies, fruitwood, and bronze furnishings. Additionally, colors that evoke both land and sea—drawing in the property’s coveted location just steps from the Pacific Ocean—are seen throughout, including elegant gold and greens, alongside shades of blue and apricot. The eight-story property features a brick-and-sandstone façade, red-tile roof, and brown iron balconies. Elaborate relief work surrounds the building, including escutcheons over the front door and intricately sculpted angels, cupids, and other Renaissance figures. Hotel Casa del Mar’s exterior was restored to its original state by HLW International, in conjunction with affiliate Thomson Design Associates.
GUEST ROOMS Hotel Casa del Mar offers 129 elegantly appointed guest rooms and suites, imparting the ambiance of a chic beach estate, with a historic sense of place. Most rooms offer panoramic views of the Pacific coastline from Palos Verdes to Malibu, while others offer cityscapes of Santa Monica. Each large guest room is accented with shades of calming

blue that draw upon the hotel’s iconic seaside location, stately windows adorned with ivory sateen draperies, and high ceilings. The centerpiece, a rich walnut four-poster bed, is accented with luxurious white linens, an etched and hand-silvered mirror, responsibly harvested white coral, a bisque-colored ceramic garden stool, lush chenille throws, and a selection of novels and thoughtfully chosen artifacts unique to the property’s beach location. In addition, each room is outfitted with the latest technology, including a 42-inch LCD flat screen television in the main room, as well as a flat screen television in the bathroom, complimentary movies, wireless internet access, and an iPod docking station. Opulent baths feature white Italian Calacatta marble walls and floors, light fixtures finished in silver leaf, white porcelain fixtures, alabaster soap holders and glassware, plush white robes, glassenclosed showers, traditional pedestal sinks, and whirlpool tubs with frosted pan-windows opening into the guest rooms. Specially designed rooms to accommodate the needs of the physically challenged are available. Three extravagant, multi-level Penthouse Suites, reminiscent of Italian seaside villas, feature eclectic Venetian-designed furnishings, a living room with fireplace, a formal dining area, and either one or two bedrooms with separate sitting areas. In addition, one penthouse features an exercise studio—ideal for the hotel’s offered one-on-one training sessions with a fitness professional. A single Presidential Suite offers two bedrooms, a living and dining room, guest bath, bar, hydrothermal massage tubs, and a separate shower and vanity.

lobal vehicle debuts by leading automakers and startups include 3D-printed supercar and self-driving electric microbus. The LA Auto Show® has announced that it expects more than 50 vehicles to be unveiled in front of media, analysts and industry executives during its trade show, AutoMobility LATM, taking place November 14-17, 2016, at the Los Angeles Convention Center. While nearly every automaker is slated to unveil products and/or make significant announcements, a few have begun to share their plans for vehicle reveals. Among the more than 20 world debuts will be introductions by Alfa Romeo, Mazda, MINI, Subaru, Volkswagen and a compact SUV from Jeep. Other reveals confirmed are those from Infiniti, Jaguar Land Rover and smart. Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Nissan will have multiple reveals, while Porsche has confirmed five debuts. General Motors (GM) will have multiple global and North American debuts, including two reveals from Chevrolet. Cadillac’s debut lineup will include the Escala concept car, which has only been seen on the Concept Lawn at the 2016 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. In addition to production and concept vehicles in the luxury and performance segments, this year’s unveilings will include a significant showing of SUVs and electric/hybrid options across several makes and models. As the automotive industry continues to transform, AutoMobility LA will also serve as a platform for product unveilings and significant announcements focused on technology, including
the global premier of Divergent’s Blade production vehicle. Built using Divergent 3D’s proprietary platform, the Blade supercar represents the future of automobile manufacturing and will be available to customers in 2017. Elio Motors, the start-up vehicle company bringing a low-cost, highly fuel efficient commuter vehicle to market, is planning on revealing the E1C (its latest E-Series vehicle), its P5 prototype vehicle and its interactive ePlus display at AutoMobility LA. With fuel efficiency of up to 84 mpg, the aerodynamic, 2-seater (tandem) has a set base price of $7,300 for non-refundable reservations (up to 65,000 total reservations). Olli, the world’s first self-driving cognitive vehicle designed by Local Motors will also be present at this year’s AutoMobility LA. Olli, an on-demand shuttle with capacity for 12, is currently being used on private roads in the Washington, D.C. area and is the first vehicle to utilize the cloud-based cognitive computing capability of IBM Watson Internet of Things to analyze and learn from high volumes of transportation data. Following AutoMobility LA, all of this year’s debuts will be on display at the 2016 LA Auto Show (open to the public November 18-27). AutoMobility LA is the culmination of a multiyear evolution of the LA Auto Show’s Connected Car Expo and its Press & Trade Days into a trade show designed exclusively for the new automotive industry. The four-day event will bring together the entire “new mobility ecosystem” comprised of automakers, tech companies, designers, developers, startups, investors, dealers, government officials, analysts, etc.

Beverly Hills Josephine Stevens catches up with blogger Alexandra Anderson Bower to find out about the challenging task of balancing being a mom with her interior design career, and her passion for art

…ON A TYPICAL DAY
In early 2006 my boyfriend (now husband) set up the URL AlexandraBeverlyHills.com and the Wordpress software for me to write about the design projects and events that were my life at the time. I didn’t really understand the concept – I didn’t want to share my sources and wanted to keep my clients’ privacy. Later that year we were married and the next year we had a baby. I was spending a lot of time on mommy message boards and social media because I had all this down time while the baby (aka The Critter) was sleeping. At that point the blog became the natural place to start writing about design and life in Beverly Hills, and the overriding theme became what it’s like to raise my son in a city that I watched on television as a child. A year after that we rebranded the blog to BeverlyHillsMom.com, and I haven’t run out of things to write about yet!
…on being authentic

I am a night owl and have had to make that work for me! Weekdays I rise at 7.30am and get The Critter off to school, then I write, paint, plan, go to events, or work on design projects until I pick him up after school. From 4pm until 9pm it’s family time. I then take a disco nap for an hour or two, get up and have personal time doing whatever is on the front burner until about 3am.
I think that sticking with my instincts has served me well. In every aspect of my business I have remained steadfast in my desire to be an authentic voice, so I can’t write about anything that doesn’t interest me or conflicts with my values. I am approached by many brands to review and write about them, but unless those elements come together, I really can’t do it. If I try something and

If I can’t say something nice, I don’t say anything at all. I also have never let the blog dictate our life – the access that this type of writing gives one is quite enticing, but I often say no to invitations that don’t organically fit into our real life story. I’m not particularly competitive in broadening my influence, so if what’s needed of me is to be present for my family, that has to be okay. Mom is job number one – I can’t be creative if my family is stressed out.
…ON BEING A BEVERLY HILLS MOM I wasn’t prepared for how much fun being a mom would be! I spend the same amount of creative angst on Halloween costumes and Cub Scout activities that I would on a design presentation. It all comes from the same well. I’d say that the biggest challenge is to make sure that my son knows how fortunate we are to live in such a beautiful safe place, and keep him grounded. I have been so pleased at our community of parents, also – with so many highly accomplished, educated people in such a concentrated area, the goal is always excellence. I can’t deny that the experience is a bit trippy sometimes, for example: the Golden Globes is held at the Beverly Hilton across from our school and Scout House. Last year the final security check point was right in front of the house, so it became the staging area for law enforcement. While the Globe nominees checked in and rolled past in their black cars, the Scouts were learning about Hazmat, bomb detection, and what it’s like to get arrested. Rebecca Eaton (Executive Producer of Masterpiece Theatre; Downton Abbey, etc) and Mark Pybus (Producer, Wolf Hall) stopped their driver and asked me what was going on, why were they handcuffing those children, and what is that vehicle? I had met her several times at PBS Press Tour, so I explained the situation. She and Pybus went on to win the Globe an hour later! Classic Beverly Hills.

THE INTERIOR DESIGNER …ON CURRENT PROJECTS I seem to be doing more accessory and branding type design work these days - I curated a collection of prop accessories for the displays of the new Liv GIANT bicycles brand, which is the first women’s bicycle gear collection from the world’s largest bicycle manufacturer. Each time a new Liv store opens I send them a “kit” of art and accessories to decorate their display fixtures. I am always working with my existing residential clients on art and accessory acquisition, and am designing a residential project on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. I also just started a new book that will be a picture book about chairs!
ALEXANDRA’S TOP INTERIOR DESIGN TIPS
…on inspiration
Designing a room is like doing detective work the clues are the in original architectural elements, the light, and the use of the room. Educate yourself on the existing style of the house or building and that will inform the scale of furniture and appropriate finishes for the room.
When starting a new project, whether it’s a painting or design, I usually thumb through my library that I have collected over the years to find motifs and shapes that I might use. I also find walking in Beverly Hills to be quite inspiring, as the light and vivid colors of the landscape change as the day goes by. I am very nostalgic – I love creating visual stories that I think I would have liked when I was seven years old. I think a lot about what might have delighted me at that time and if an idea passes that test, it stays in.
Choose one item to anchor the design – it can be a pillow, a painting, a collection of butterflies, a rug – anything. Your next selections can spin off of that. For example, my sister in law hand made a gorgeous Hawaiian quilt for my husband of blues and greens that later became the design element that anchored my son’s baby room, and further made apple green a color used throughout our home.
…ON DREAM PROJECTS I have created a line of affordable wall art for children’s rooms, and my dream would be to license these along with my fabulous baby and children’s soft furnishings so I can spread my love of design and art to babies everywhere.
I am a big fan of using many small tables in family rooms, from ottomans with inset trays to tiered side tables. They can be configured to accommodate the family activities without much effort, and are easily tucked away when you want to have lots of space to move around.
Use decorative trays and boxes to keep items that create visual clutter in check. People like their stuff like eyeglasses and hand cream within reach, but keep it contained in something pretty.
If you have a tendency to like to change things up, invest in solid color textiles on your large seating pieces and use decorative pillows with colorful patterns that can be changed occasionally. Use blankets and throws that complement your design. My workroom makes gigantic double velour blankets that are nine feet by six feet and match the pillow colors. When these are being used to make a fort, the room doesn’t look messy.

1. Art and mirrors hung too high. The center of a painting or a mirror should be at eye level. 2. Candle wicks that are not burned off. I can’t stand seeing candles in a perfectly styled room with big unlit white wicks wagging at me. Burn them when you set them out – this is also for safety so that the long wick doesn’t ash onto a flammable surface.

…ON louis xiv Louis XIV is my real life dog! He was my baby before I had my two-legged baby. I saw him at the pet store at Beverly Center, and he chose me. He really prepared me for motherhood.

…ON being creative I’ve always been involved in some type of creative expression. I studied painting electively for both my Theatre degree and my Interior Design degrees, but before I had my son I would paint really large canvasses that would take months to finish. …ON the picture book Louis XIV of Beverly Hills is a completed picture book with sixteen illustrations. The story revolves around the perfectionist neurotic Louis and his perfect routine, but a trip to the country shakes that up. All the illustrations have real life design elements from Beverly Hills and Mississippi, including the Electric Fountain and the mosaic at the pool of the Montage. While I search for the right publisher, I am offering framed prints and greeting cards with some of the illustrations from the book. I also have two other Louis stories in the works. Photographer Dominick Aznavour from Los Angeles chats to Josephine Stevens about his work and inspiration
ou’ll find Dominick Aznavour hard at work in the arts district in North Hollywood, where he moved from Santa Clarita. His photographic journey started at a young age and was influenced by his mother’s hobby of taking pictures. Spending time looking through family albums was ultimately what helped him distinguish a good picture from a bad one. “I started drawing at a very early age, then moved from pastels to oil painting. I believe that’s where I learned about color and composition. In high school, I joined theatre and started to pursue acting, which educated me on what a good performance was, and looked like. I will never underestimate the importance of a great performance. Being a performer also taught me how to get what I need out of the people I shoot as well. It truly brings out the best in your photography.” Dominick has always enjoyed experimenting with different media. His study of Film Production at college taught him a lot about lighting and different types of lenses. “In my opinion, knowing how to light your subject is the most important part of 36 NOVEMBER 2016
photography. Also, one of the most important things I learned was production value and how to make it or fake it. It completely changed my photography.” The subject of Dominick’s work is varied, from figurative and portrait shots, to rural and urban landscapes. “I absolutely love portraits. I love doing landscapes, but portraits feel more personal to me. With portraits, everyone brings something unique to the table. The expression on their face, what they’re wearing, where they are – all of these things combined create something unique and beautiful.” Details are important and a smirk or slight frown can completely change the entire image. When editing, Dominick will often scrutinize the difference between one image and another. While both pictures may look exactly the same, he knows that the smallest detail can really set them apart. “As a photographer, I have the ability to control, for the most part, how the viewer will feel when seeing a photograph. There are so many creative liberties a photographer can take, so it starts to become a question of how I want my viewer to feel.
“Being a performer also taught me how to get what I need out of the people I shoot as well. It truly brings out the best in your photography.”
Dominick’s top photography tips Truly understand the camera and how it works Know what every button does and know how to truly use the camera without assistance. When you are in complete control of your camera, you’ll be in complete control of your shot. Be patient. Learning how to use any piece of technology will always have a steep learning curve, but once you’ve owned it, you’ll be in full control of what your pictures look like.
Learn about lighting and how to utilize different types Once I learned about the different type of lighting, I went out and bought some umbrellas and speedlights to practice with. I spent months learning how to use those speedlights and it, hands down, changed my photography. The quality of my photos went from being good to great. I love natural lighting but not only are you limited to one source of light, your lighting source is never consistent since the positioning of the sun is changing throughout the day. This is why being knowledgeable about lighting is important; you take out the factors that are out of your control and put them in your control.
Shoot as often as possible. Everything in photography will be trial and error so as I said before, be patient, it will be worth it. You can’t be a musician, athlete or doctor without the practice. Those who are the best in their craft are the most experienced and the most knowledgeable. There is no way around that. We live in a generation where if you don’t know how to do something, you can simply go on Youtube and learn it, so take advantage of these opportunities and educate yourself.
Be creative Don’t limit yourself to one type of photography... but only in the beginning. I would encourage people to go out and shoot a wedding or shoot your friends’ headshots. Try something that’s out of the ordinary. Find what it is that makes you happy while you’re shooting. Experience can only help you discover what it is you’re great at. If you learn how to shoot incredible landscapes and meanwhile learn how to shoot gorgeous portraits, then you have the knowledge to merge the two together. Once you’re well rounded and you’ve found what it is you love, then I would spend your time becoming an expert in that one area. As they say, “A Jack of all trades is a master of none.”
Take risks Failing comes with the territory of becoming great at anything. Not every shoot has to be a masterpiece so don’t beat yourself up. If you can sit back and ask yourself why a picture didn’t come out the way you wanted and solve that problem, then you’re already better than you were prior to shooting. Try to find something about every shoot that you don’t like and ask yourself what you can do better next time. This is what makes experience so important. The more you shoot, the more you learn. Never stop asking yourself what you can do better and how you’re going to fix it next time. Sometimes the answer is as easy as changing a setting on your camera, and sometimes you have to invest in more equipment.
The most pictures with most impact I’ve seen have always been portraits.” He explains: “Imagine a picture of the streets Los Angeles; Now imagine the same picture with a fireman staring straight into the camera with tears down his face. It says so much more than just what the street itself can offer.” Dominick cites his inspiration in the creative arts as mainly being seeing pictures and movies, and the way in which a painting or film can allow the viewer to see emotion. A story is told, and sometimes, people be so affected by what they are seeing that they are deeply moved.
“I love that feeling you get, when you’re looking at a picture and it immediately makes you laugh or it takes you back to a specific time and place.”
“Sometimes people love an image so much they decide to put it up in their house or buy a product or relive a memory of their own,” says Dominick. Inspiration can come to him in many forms as well. “An article of clothing that catches my attention, the way light is sitting on someone’s face, a small expression on someone’s face. These could easily invoke an emotion in me which can further inspire an idea for a shoot. I love that feeling you get, when you’re looking at a picture and it immediately makes you laugh or it takes you back to a specific time and place.” Dominick has had a varied journey from first looking in family albums, to where he is today, via pastels, oils, film production and of course, stunning photography in many different forms. But what does the future hold? “I’ve always had an affinity for traveling, so I’m hoping to be able to travel more for my work. I absolutely love working with people, so being able to broaden my horizons in terms of seeing different cultures has always been something I’ve been interested in. I’d also love to spread my work to other formats as well, like, lifestyle, high fashion, live music, recording artists and film production stills. Film and music production is like unveiling the curtain in Oz for me. I love watching the process of how people create art. Ultimately, I’d like to work with as many creative people as I can. There’s nothing more satisfying than working toward a common goal with a group of your peers.” He feels Chuck Palahniuk had it right when he said, “The goal isn’t to live forever but to create something that will.” “I think this is the goal of every artist, regardless of their medium. The only time you can do that is by creating something that moves people. Period. TOP LEFT: What I love about California is it’s seemingly infinite amount of places to eat and sightsee. You could easily pass these piers thinking they’re nothing more but you would absolutely miss out on an incredible experience. Drive down the PCH and pick a spot, whether you’re a photographer or a foodie, you will be satisfied. I think this is a great representation of California in the winter. It’s one of my favorites because I feel like so many people can look at a photo like this, and think back on a time they were at the beach during the winter with cloudy skies and the cool air. BOTTOM LEFT: I had the incredible opportunity of working with the LAPD’s Northridge division. I was asked to shoot all the different areas the police department had jurisdiction over. It was my first time flying in a helicopter shooting aerial shots and I’m hoping not the last. We decided to shoot the city during sunset since the lighting would be better. I’m so glad we did, once we landed I was walking away from the helicopter and looked back to see the following image. I had to take my camera out and take a picture. The sunset was gorgeous.
“This has always been on my top list of favorite pictures I’ve taken. This was shot in a wood barn out in the hills of Malibu” TOP RIGHT: My friend Devon Newberry and I decided to do a shoot that had a timeless look to it. We wanted to implement the 1950’s greaser combined with modern day styles. This was shot in the Downtown Los Angeles Union Station. I loved how the building itself maintained its history with its dark wood and archways. The interior architecture immediately caught my eye the first time I went inside. I knew I needed to shoot here, so we collaborated on this idea that revolved around the train station and Union station. BOTTOM RIGHT: This has always been on my top list of favorite pictures I’ve taken. This was shot in a wood barn out in the hills of Malibu. I remember the first time I took this picture, it made me further fall in love with photography. It was a defining moment for me because until then I was mostly shooting headshots. This was when I started experimenting with full scenes instead of just portraits and since then, I’ve never seen photography the same way.

TOP LEFT: I loved the lines and expression on her face. There’s something so regal about them sitting back and smoking with wine glasses littering the table. I was with my family in Universal City when I took this. What caught my eye was the soft lighting coming from behind me as well as the lines on her face. I also loved how the reflection of the building behind me, was reflected behind both of them. It gives it another dimension. I feel like all the small accents of red really bring this picture together. MIDDLE LEFT: I absolutely loved doing this shoot. I started experimenting with action shots since a majority of my work was still. We went to the jewelry district in downtown Los Angeles and shot this on a Sunday. I probably had Ian run and jump more than a dozen times before we got the perfect positioning. I didn’t use any artificial lighting for this either, we were lucky enough to have it be somewhat overcast that day. I couldn’t be happier with the way this turned out.
“When Ian and I went to Downtown to do this shoot, I knew I was going to find an alleyway somewhere in Los Angeles but this one was perfect” BOTTOM LEFT: When the LAPD had me take aerial pictures of the Northridge area, I was excited to say the least. It was my first time shooting out of a helicopter so I made sure I was as prepared as possible. I came with two cameras, one with a zoom lens and one with a wide, just to make sure I had complete coverage. I shot this in December, so I was lucky enough to be able to capture the cloudy skies and trees which were changing color. RIGHT: When Ian and I went to Downtown to do this shoot, I knew I was going to find an alleyway somewhere in Los Angeles but this one was perfect. Between the red walls and the tiny gutter of water, we immediately walked down and began shooting. The reds made the blue in his suit pop. What I love about this picture is how timeless it can be. Even the content on the newspaper makes it appear as though it could be from a different era.

LEFT: I took this picture in April while I was on a business trip in Chicago. There was something that was so calm yet busy about this city. The calm cloudy skies felt like they balanced what was going on down below. It didn’t have the hectic hustle and bustle that New York or Los Angeles had. Funny enough, if I would have taken this picture 5 minutes later, you would see nothing but white. Within minutes the city was covered in snow. ABOVE, LEFT: I absolutely love Los Angeles because of all the hidden gems that photographers have at their disposal. We drove around The arts district in Los Angeles looking for the perfect place to shoot, until we came across this location. Underneath the 6th street bridge we found a spot which we fell in love with. The lighting was perfect and I loved the reflective stream behind her. It adds another element to the picture. I did an entire series of her and her brother in this location.

ABOVE, RIGHT: Sometimes you’ll find yourself somewhere that’s so surreal, you swear you died and went to heaven. This was shot in a small town called Montepulciano in Tuscany, Italy. It was sunset, and all the hill sides were beautifully lit. You can see all sorts of different vineyards and villages as far as the eye can see. It’s definitely one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been to. This picture alone does not even do it justice in comparison to reality.

He met many new people along the way, and enjoyed it so much that he did it again the following year, and every year since, using different routes. The walk has grown and last year around 400 people walked the 16 miles across the city via Olympic Boulevard with him. This year’s walk is on November 19 and returns to Pico Boulevard, a route first taken in 2007. Each year the walk proves to the world that it’s fun to walk in LA, and being the Saturday before Thanksgiving means you can be guilt-free gorging on sweet potatoes and pumpkin pie a few days later. It’s a relaxed affair with no agenda, simply to enjoy LA, exercise and have fun. There are plenty of places to stop along the way for a bite to eat, and some people just join in for part of the walk. Mike sums up the last Pico Boulevard walk: “Great Los Angeles Walkers who made it from end-to-end got to experience, along the way, the bustling (even at 9 in the morning) fashion district; the Convention Center (currently home to the Auto Show); the Central American-dominated ByzantineLatino Quarter; the city’s shortest street (Powers Place); the beautiful old homes of Alvarado Terrace; a slice of Koreatown; the gut-busting food of spots like Oki-Dog and Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles; the sight of a massive crane that tipped over (smashing

We usually stay at home and I cook all my traditional family recipes like cornbread dressing and holiday sweet potatoes. I set the table with the real china and silver and we have dinner in the late afternoon. We decorate our Christmas tree the weekend after Thanksgiving. My mother comes to town for three weeks right before Christmas, so we have a number of things we like to do together, like lunch at Mariposa Neiman Marcus, Christmas shopping, and going to see Santa at Two Rodeo. We order seafood from New Orleans and have a Revellion dinner for Christmas instead of turkey for my family and any “orphan” friends in town. My son usually performs in the beautiful Christmas Pageant at All Saints Episcopal and then we just relax afterward. We started staying in for New Years Eve the last few years, so I have tons of three-foot sparklers and loud (legal) fireworks to pop off at midnight. My mother makes traditional black-eyed peas and cabbage, so my Southern friends all drop by for a bite of good luck for the New Year. Because Beverly Hills has a much larger Jewish population than Christian, there isn’t quite the hectic Christmas rush that I grew up with, because everyone isn’t shopping all at once. Shopping on Rodeo at Christmas is FABULOUS – everyone is happy and festive, and it’s not too crowded.You can really enjoy yourself. Based at the foot of Mount Shasta in California’s Cascade Range Belcampo Farms offers an inspiring and evocative retreat. The camp is a three-day intensive where you will quickly gain a thorough understanding of meat cookery with a focus on open-fire grilling. Meat Camp is all-inclusive, with participants lodged in luxury ‘glamping’ tents in the farm’s orchard and enjoying family-style meals. You will also have a chance to participate in morning and afternoon workouts. Those attending will be cutting, salting, and lifting, so everyone should be prepared to be active and get involved. The farm is easy to get around, however participants will easily be walking up to a mile each day between venues and to visit animals. Courses will also feature members of the Belcampo Butchery and Farm teams where relevant. Because you will be tasting delicious meat all day long, abundant vegetables will form the main meals. The meal options will all be paleo and gluten-free friendly. The cost is $1,400 per person double occupancy (sign up with a friend or get paired with another camper) or $2,000 per person for single occupancy. Pricing includes lodging, food, all courses and any transportation used at the farm. If you are looking into chartering a plane to get to the farm, the cost is approximately $6,000 each way from Los Angeles for a plane that can seat 8 people. These charter flights land about 20 minutes from the farm at the Montague airport, Belcampo can provide transport to and from the airport. ative American Eskimos have an old adage about dealing with bears: Don’t run or blink and they will know you are a wise one. Personally, I’m not convinced. Despite the national park warden’s firm advice to stand our ground, I imagine every sinew in my body stretching to sprint should I cross paths with 450kg of teeth and claws. In Alaska, where bears far outnumber people, heart-pounding encounters of this sort are a real possibility. Dominated by swathes of uninhabited plains and forest, and consciously set apart from the Lower 48s, this state straddling the Arctic Circle is often touted as America’s last true wilderness. Appropriately, I’m visiting in the centennial year of the US National Parks Service, a body set up with the intention to protect and preserve places just like this. On the country’s southwest peninsula, Katmai was originally declared a National Park Monument following the biggest volcanic eruption of the 20th century in 1912. But in recent decades, The Valley of 10,000 Smokes, an eerie plateau of ash sliced by deep gorges, has played second fiddle to the bears. On the beach or along a trail, chances are you will bump into one at Brooks Lodge, a relatively accessible camp (even though it’s still a flight and float plane ride from Anchorage) inland on the banks of Brooks Lake. Tents and wooden cabins are set back from the water, framed by charcoal-tipped birch trees spiralling like mascara wands and brushing the

foothills of snow-streaked mountains. I meet my first ursus along a narrow forest trail. A nervous sow stands on hind legs with her cubs and utters a series of teacher tuts to send me scurrying into the thickets. I’m torn between fear and fascination; it’s hard to disassociate the cute, tufty-haired baby bears from their cuddly counterparts who used to accompany me on picnics as a child. I’m here early in the season (mid-June) when the sockeye salmon are starting to run, and bleary-eyed brown bears - hungry from hibernation - are slowly gathering at Brooks Falls to fill their boots. The elevated viewing platform overlooking the popular fishing spot can be packed with queues of 300 people in July, the height of the short season, but right now, I have the place to myself. As salmon struggle furiously upstream, catapulting over the weir, bears employ a variety of techniques to make their catch. Some energetically pounce, others snorkel below the surface and the most successful hunters simply sit in the ‘Jacuzzi’, a small whirlpool, and wait. A clear hierarchy is quickly set: a big warwounded male takes center stage, while timid females and juveniles wait in the wings. Entering the picture with a cowboy swagger, a young pretender digs his hind spurs into the soil, clearly demonstrating “there ain’t room in this town for the two of us”. Distracted by a bountiful, protein-rich food source, these animals show little concern for humans. But it’s a different story further north in Denali, Alaska’s first national park (designated 1917) and home to North America’s highest peak, where smaller but more dangerous berry-foraging grizzlies have rightly earned their name. Commissioned by President Woodrow Wilson in
1914 to open up Alaska’s mineral-rich interior, the Alaska Railroad now operates as a heritage tourist train with a route running from Anchorage to Fairbanks via Denali. Snaking through steep, climbing forest and sparkling lakes, we pass remote villages unreachable by road and off-radar regions where outlaws might easily hide. Avoiding the Disneyfied, built-up park entrance, nicknamed Glitter Gulch, I head to Denali’s ‘backcountry’, Kantishna Hills, where the only access is by light aircraft or a six-hour bus ride. Sixty-something New Zealander Kirsty has been driving the same daily route in and out of the park for 30 years, and as we hug hairpin bends and steer through gaping valleys, she shares fond memories of her individually nicknamed single-deckers as if they were cherished family members. Wearing a broad Stetson and permanent grin, flamboyant guide Steve welcomes us to Kantishna Roadhouse, one of the few lodges out here in the wilds. He’s one of the many young, seasonal workers who merrily spend days off exploring with just a backpack and sense of adventure. Following a briefing on the appropriate action to take should I encounter one of the park’s dangerous animals, I fail to share the same carefree confidence. “If you see a bear, stand still; for moose, you should break into a zig-zag run,” instructs a guide. What if you bump into a bear and a moose, I wonder, but decide it’s best not to ask. By now, bearanoia has set in so I join a guided hike through knee-height dwarf spruce and bouncy tundra decorated with the smallest azaleas in the world. We wind up at artists’ hotspot Wonder Lake, a location favoured by photographer Ansel Adams, where placid water presents the perfect mirror image of the Alaskan Range.

At 20,310 feet and rising 0.5mm per year, Mount Denali (previously referred to as Mount McKinley, but now officially known by its native name) stands head and shoulders above neighboring mountains, but characteristically, it’s covered in cloud. “Don’t worry, we can cut through that,” says Greg LaHaie, pilot and owner of Kantishna Air Taxi. Our 45-minute scenic flight takes us within a breath of the peak, above ant lines of brave climbers and the curving trails of glaciers. Flying into the light, Greg loops rainbows into sugary doughnuts, reflected in a myriad of kettle ponds below. Glacial melt water drizzles through moraine in silvery threads, reaching into the vast, empty Alaskan interior, a realm of incomprehensible nothingness. More ice – and more people – can be found further south in the state’s most accessible national park, Kenai Fjords, a photogenic four-hour coastal train ride on the Alaska Railroad from Anchorage. On a full-day boat tour skirting the Harding icefield, mountains rise from rainforest and glaciers tumble into the sea. Salmon-feeding orcas prospect between islands numbed by petrified forests, while an attention-seeking humpback repeatedly breaches to a raptured audience of tourists. But I’m most charmed by the sea otter, a whiskered old man who paddles backstroke in the harbour and has a magpie instinct for collecting items and hoarding them in his pouch. 5 tips for making dark rooms lighter 1. Any room can be made to feel lighter simply by painting the ceiling white, so it reflects light instead of absorbing it, and, of course, the walls too. Specialist emulsions can help even more. Stick to warm tones when the natural light is cold, such as yellows and creamy neutrals. 2. One of the best ways to brighten up a kitchen is with pale – preferably white – high-gloss unit doors, as these bounce light around the room. Highgloss kitchens never seem to go out of fashion, so glossy doors are a great way to update the room and needn’t be expensive. In any dark room, but especially kitchens and bathrooms, it’s important to have good artificial lighting because you may need it on when it’s light outside. 3. In other rooms, consider going for glossy or mirrored furniture, and hanging mirrors on the walls - opposite a window will maximise the light coming in and make the room feel bigger. And don’t forget the floor – white-painted floorboards, or shiny white floor tiles in kitchens and bathrooms, will help to bounce light around. 4.
