o synonymous with Welsh rugby is the Quinnell name that Lucy Quinnell, who lives in Surrey, is often asked if her genealogical roots are in Wales. The remarkable narrative of not one but four rugby legends in one proudly Welsh family – father Derek Quinnell and his sons Scott, Craig and Gavin – has firmly cemented the surname in popular imagination as a Cambrian one. Grayshott Pottery in Surrey is one of the last working potteries in Southern England. You can see their crafts persons at work, browse their large and well stocked Emporium, explore their exclusive Gallery and enjoy refreshments in the popular Kiln Cafe. It’s all happening at St George’s Junior School… Daily mile helps Year 1 pupils stay fit to play and fit to learn
T
his Easter Term, Year 1 pupils at St George’s Junior School, Weybridge are taking part in a new initiative aimed at helping them stay fit to play and fit to learn. Each child will have the opportunity to complete a daily mile of exercise on the School grounds, giving them a chance to take in the fresh air and enjoy the sights and sounds of the outdoors. They will track their performance and make personal targets for improvement, and will build new relationships by walking with different classmates. Friday 15 January saw the boys and girls take to the School field for three brisk laps. There were smiles

all round and a visible sense of determination as they marched along, suitably clad in their winter coats and wellies. Describing his progress so far, pupil Freddie said: I didn’t like it before because it was a bit tiring, but I like it now because it gives me more energy.” Similar initiatives at other UK schools have resulted in significant improvements to children’s sleeping, eating and ability to focus in the classroom, and the teachers at St George’s are confident that the children will be able to reap the same benefits from their daily mile. An education tailored for boys
T
he town of Guildford is bucking a national trend which continues to be at the heart of heated educational discussion in the press and social media. A row over single-sex education has again flared up with the suggestion that students at single-sex institutions are at a huge disadvantage living in a deeply unrealistic world and, as such, all-boys and allgirls schools are educational dinosaurs. The number of single-sex schools continues to drop and yet the RGS remains proud to have offered boys-only education in the centre of Guildford for over 500 years, an education which not only allows boys to emerge with exceptional results but also to develop into confident, grounded, thoroughly decent individuals. The smooth coexistence with the neighbouring girls schools means that RGS boys get the very best of both worlds: an education tailored for boys where the teaching and support are geared specifically to the learning style of boys without gender stereotype, prejudice or distraction, while in every other way allowing the boys – with the freedom which a town-centre school affords – to enjoy healthy and normal interaction with girls in the academic, artistic, extracurricular and social spheres. This media storm has coincided with a time when, if justification were required with regard to perceived disadvantages, the RGS can justifiably claim to be proud of its past, its present and its future. Our Old Guildfordians continue to flourish on the national and international stages: Jack Clifford (OG11) is part of Eddie Jones’s new-look England rugby squad for the Six Nations; Angus Goodwin (OG06) won the prestigious Turner Prize as founder
8 FEBRUARY 2016
member of art, architecture and design collective Assemble for his work on a Liverpool housing estate; Tom Griffiths (OG09), in the presence of The Prince of Wales, was awarded the Sword of Honour at the Sovereign’s Parade; Giles Hutchings (OG13) has been participating in the Champion of Champions tournament on Channel 4’s Countdown. The current Upper Sixth Form has just received 38 Oxbridge offers: the second highest ever for the School and a record for the RGS for Cambridge offers with 25. The future looks equally exciting and recently we have been delighted to welcome prospective students from Prep and Primary Schools – impressive in both number and calibre alike – who sat our 11+ entrance examinations. There are great schools which are single-sex or co-educational, which are day or boarding, which are independent or maintained: the important thing is not, however, the label but an institution in which pupils are happy, have the scope to flourish and grow, and where they can fulfil their potential. It is in this light that we continue to be proud of all those boys who have worn, continue to wear and will wear in the future, the RGS blazer. UK parents among
‘the strictest in Europe’
B
ritish parents are among the strictest in Europe after a study has revealed they are more reluctant to let their children play and travel unsupervised. Worried parents in England restrict their child’s ability to play and travel without adult supervision more than their European counterparts, the research found. The study revealed parents are mainly worried about the potential danger from road traffic and going out in the dark and it followed calls from leading teachers to expose children to more genuine risk. Researchers compared children’s independent mobility in 16 countries worldwide based on a survey of over
children to use daylight hours and prevent road deaths. Ben Shaw, Director of Policy Studies Institute, said: “ Allowing children the freedom to get about in their local area unaccompanied by adults has been found to be important for their health and physical, mental and social development. Yet we have found that children around the world have significant restrictions placed on their freedom to get about – to go to school, to visit friends, and get to places to play. “Children’s freedom of movement has declined in recent decades and danger from traffic is the main reason parents give for not letting their children out by themselves.
Researchers compared children’s independent mobility in 16 countries worldwide based on a survey of over 18,000 children 18,000 children aged 7 - 15 from 2010 to 2012. Carried out by the Policy Studies Institute (PSI) at the University of Westminster, it found that children’s ability to travel and play in their local area unsupervised by adults varies widely with England in seventh place compared to more lenient countries like Germany and Finland. The only European countries from the sample that allow children of any age to go out after dark are Finland, Sweden and Denmark, the study funded by the Nuffield Foundation revealed. Separately, England held the seventh place in the ranking, positioning parents as among the less lenient in Europe. The report recommended a reduction of car dependency and a change in Daylight Saving Time to allow
10 FEBRUARY 2016
We are struck by how this significant danger and major restriction on children, is routinely accepted given the health and developmental benefits independent mobility has been shown to result in. “While restrictions on children’s freedom have increased, our research has looked at how this situation can be turned around. “We have found some shining examples of cities such as Rotterdam and Vancouver which have been inspired to place children at the centre of their development; on the basis that if a city works for children it works for everyone. “However, if the benefits of these approaches are to be enjoyed in the UK, the needs of children must be given much greater priority by decision makers working in the policy areas of planning, development and transport.

Independent Schools bring top of the class results
T
he A-level results table below illustrates the highest achieving A-Level results of independent schools in the UK - including the percentage of subject entries graded A*/A or equivalent. independent school league tables are created using data supplied by the Independent Schools Council. Some schools decline to submit results, so may not appear in the position they achieved. Only schools with 25 or more candidates sitting A-level or equivalent qualifications are included in the table. In these A-level tables, Cardiff Sixth Form College has topped the list once again this year, as the best-performing independent school, with just a slight dip in the percentage of pupils at grades A* to A - 94.64 per cent of pupils in 2015 compared with 94.71 in 2014. The table covers A-levels in addition to the International Baccalaureate (IB) and the Cambridge Pre-U. Results in the IB and Pre-U are converted into A-level equivalents using the Ucas tarrif point system as a guide. Higher level 7 and 6 at IB = A* and A at A-level. Distinction 1, 2, 3 and Merit 1 at Pre-U = A* and A at A-level.

‘Private schools should be praised for producing influential people’
C
A study by Debrett’s, the etiquette experts, reveals that two-fifths of the 500 most powerful and influential people in Britain went to private schools
rucially this cuts across all spheres of influence, including not only traditional careers, like business and politics, but areas like architecture and acting too: witness the amazing global success of Eton-educated Eddie Redmayne, still only 33, as Professor Stephen Hawking, in The Theory of Everything. Of course private schools are always going to produce far more than their fair share of Society’s most powerful “players”. This is inevitable, given the fact that most successful people educate their own children privately; thus the system is guaranteed to be perpetuated, with success breeding success. For example, high-flying parents will have all the key contacts, whether in commerce or theatre, to help ensure their own offspring have that first, vital helping hand up the career ladder. Work experience slots inevitably go to the children of top business people or lawyers, for example as inevitably their parents have the contacts to find precious openings. And anyone who has been to a private school, whether big or small, famous or not so famous, will know that there will be many such high-achieving parents. Their added
14 FEBRUARY 2016
influence opens doors more easily and, crucially, other pupils can also benefit from their contacts. For example, successful parents are often instrumental in prompting high-profile acquaintances to visit schools as speakers: spending time with pupils and offering invaluable advice on “How to succeed” in the process. That way, everyone benefits from their expertise. This is indeed how the system works on a termly basis: little nudges here and there, but nothing too blatant or nepotistic. Private schools are exceedingly good at producing successful pupils…

enbies Wine Estate, England’s largest vineyard, is situated on the outskirts of Dorking in the heart of the Surrey Hills. Approaching the expansive Denbies Estate, for a moment, one could really be anywhere in the world, acres and acres of vineyard rolling into the distant hills, a captivating sight – in the middle of Surrey. Established in 1986, the vineyard has become a benchmark of wine making excellence in this growth industry. Just over 30 years ago the new owners of the Denbies estate recognised the unique characteristics of the North Downs landscape. Its’ south facing slopes, chalky soil and micro-climate made it ideal for creating England’s largest vineyard. The 265 acre vineyard was planted in 1986, a bold move taken by Sir Adrian White, who, with his family moved to the estate in 1984. The impressive chateau style winery was completed in 1993, the same year as the maiden wine, Surrey Gold, was released. The estate is now one of the largest most visited attractions in the south-east with two restaurants, wine and gift shop, conference and banqueting, micro-brewery and farm shop. The original Farmhouse was converted into bed and breakfast accommodation with 7 en-suite double rooms. Denbies produces internationally award winning excellent cool climate sparkling wines using the traditional grape varieties, grown on chalky soil, it has also an excellent reputation for producing award winning premium still wines. In 2011 Denbies was awarded an IWC Gold ‘Best Rose in the world’ for its Chalk Ridge Rose 2010. The winery also produces first class still wines from the noble varieties, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and now Sauvignon Blanc. This is a combination of warmer growing seasons producing riper fruit, and a great deal of expertise in the winemaking process. The 2014 Pinot Gris, which is being released in March 2016, is currently showing some wonderfully complex flavours, as is the Sauvignon Blanc and the Bacchus. As well as producing internationally award winning wines, Denbies offers a wide range of events, the highlight of the year will be the Denbies 30th Anniversary ball, taking place on 11th June, reservations are now being taken. NIGHTS OF FOOD, AGONY AND DINING HELL Jay Rayner tours the UK in 2016
R
enowned restaurant critic, MasterChef judge and sometime jazz pianist Jay Rayner is embarking on two UK-wide tours in 2016. Taking place in various theatres across the country from February to May, A Night OF Food and Agony and My Dining Hell entertainingly combine Jay Rayner’s flair for storytelling and acerbic wit with a hitherto hidden talent as a musician.
restaurant critic for the Observer. Jay Rayner is a former Young Journalist of the Year, Critic of the Year and Restaurant Critic of the Year, though not all in the same year. In the 2014 British Press Awards he was shortlisted for both Critic of the Year and Specialist Journalist of the Year. Somehow he has also found time to write four novels and three works of non-fiction. His latest book is A Greedy Man In A Hungry
‘Rayner, a restaurant critic and boulevardier, is the perfect communicator’ – Clive Davis, The Times My Dining Hell, opening in March in Liverpool and travelling around the country before closing in Chatham in May, will see Jay examine our love affair with lousy reviews. As a restaurant critic for the Observer for over 15 years, if there is one thing Jay has learnt it is that his readers delight in reviews of bad restaurants. In this accompaniment to his book of the same name, Rayner rants about his most hated restaurants fads, describes some of his most excruciating nights out and – just to balance things – reads from the worst reviews his own work has ever received. Having already had a successful run in 2015, this is a hugely entertaining show in the company of the man recently voted the best food and drink journalist in Britain. Kicking off in Kingston in February and finishing in Swansea in April A Night Of Food And Agony, featuring Jay’s quartet, will essentially offer two shows for the price of one. The first half of this evening is an hour-long version of My Dining Hell, where Jay talks about his time as a restaurant critic and one of Britain’s most well-known food experts, delighting the audience with anecdotes about the best and worst restaurants he’s ever eaten in. Fresh from his knock-out show at legendary jazz venue Ronnie Scott’s, the second half of the evening brings Jay together with his ensemble of top flight musicians to perform. Accompanied by the singer Pat Gordon Smith, bassist Robert Rickenberg and saxophonist Dave Lewis, Jay will play tunes from the Great American food and drink songbook. There’ll be standards from the likes of Johnny Mercer, Harold Arlen, Blossom Dearie and Dave Frishberg, alongside anecdotes from his life being paid to eat out on somebody else’s dime, and stories about growing up with a mother, Claire Rayner, who was a sex advice columnist. An award-winning writer, journalist and broadcaster with a fine collection of floral shirts, Jay Rayner has written on everything from crime and politics, through cinema and theatre to the visual arts. But despite his stint as sex columnist for Cosmopolitan, he is best known as
World: How (almost) everything you thought you knew about food is wrong. He chairs BBC Radio 4’s The Kitchen Cabinet, and is a regular on British television, where he is familiar as a judge on Masterchef and, since 2009, as the resident food expert on The One Show. Jayrayner.co.uk

What’s in a Rowhurst Forge, Leatherhead
S
o synonymous with Welsh rugby is the Quinnell name that Lucy Quinnell, who lives in Surrey, is often asked if her genealogical roots are in Wales. The remarkable narrative of not one but four rugby legends in one proudly Welsh family – father Derek Quinnell and his sons Scott, Craig and Gavin – has firmly cemented the surname in popular imagination as a Cambrian one. Sharing with millions of others a huge passion for exploring family trees, Lucy discovered that her surname had not travelled from Wales to England, but from England to Wales. “My grandmother used to say that we were distant cousins of the rugby-playing Quinnells, but I didn’t know the precise connection until I became one of those obsessive gene hounds who trawl the records in pursuit of their ancestors.”
24 FEBRUARY 2016
Quinnell is actually an Anglo-Saxon surname, derived from the Old English personal name ‘Cwenhild’, composed of ‘cwen’ meaning ‘woman’ and ‘hild’ meaning ‘war’. Moving south through England over many centuries, the ‘Quyneld’ family became established in Surrey by the 1400s, when Peter Quyneld settled in Chiddingfold and built Lythe Hill Farm, now the famous Lythe Hill Hotel, Restaurant and Spa. During the 1500s, the family (now ‘Quennell’) became major players in the Surrey ironfounding industry, owning or leasing several furnaces including Imbhams Farm, wellknown today as a specialist granary. The Quennells also owned Field Place at Compton, near Guildford. Royalist Peter Quennell was granted a coat of arms in 1623 and the family cast ‘gunns and shott’ for the Crown. This was to lead to a downturn in fortune – when Charles I was executed in 1649, the Parliamentarians destroyed the

furnace at Imbhams and the Quennells left the ancestral home at Lythe Hill. Subsequent generations migrated down through Sussex, working mainly as labourers. Lucy’s great-great-greatgrandfather, baptised in Chichester in 1801, set sail in 1822 for a new life as a soldier in India, and it was not until 1899 that a Quinnell in this branch of the family was born back in England. With his surname and a bookplate depicting the Quinnell coat of arms as the only clues to his past, Lucy’s Anglo-Indian grandfather picked up the ancient ironworking connection and the notion of a lost Surrey home, founding a forge in 1932 at Rowhurst, Leatherhead. Rowhurst Forge is still thriving today, run by Lucy and her blacksmith husband Adam Boydell. Another branch of the Quinnells stayed firmly in the Midhurst area until one family member moved to Wales, where his son Derek Quinnell was born in Llanelli in 1949, destined to make sporting history. In a serendipitous twist of fate, the Surrey and Welsh Quinnells have started to collaborate. Scott Quinnell’s wife Nicola makes beautiful candles in Wales, and

Lucy Quinnell’s award-winning ironworking business makes candlesticks. Lucy now sells Quinnell Candles to accompany the ironwork, and Scott delivers them personally, en route to his media commitments. “Scott is a very charismatic delivery man,” says Lucy. “Our customers do a double take when they see him duck to get through the office door with an armful of boxes. They know they’ve seen him somewhere… I think our mutual ancestors would be delighted to see two branches of the family re-united after so many years.” THE DETAILS Quinnell Candles are available to buy at: Fire and Iron Gallery, Rowhurst Forge Oxshott Road, Leatherhead, Surrey KT22 0EN ••••• Telephone 01372 386453 www.fireandiron.co.uk ••••• Open Tuesday to Saturday 10am-5pm FEBRUARY 2016 25

You’ll enjoy a fantastic atmosphere running alongside other like-minded people and can support your chosen charity at the same time! Whether you’re completely new to running as a sport, looking to complete your first half marathon or aiming for a personal best finish time, there will be hundreds of people in the same position on race day so you will be in good company. Participating in the 2XU Surrey Half is a fantastic way to inspire yourself and your friends. World-class athletes are here in Woking and running alongside you (ok, probably a few kilometres in front!) Run Fast athletes will be participating in the 2016 event, showing how running is done. The Surrey Half Marathon Team are asking bosses to enter their employees into the Corporate Challenge in a bid to encourage health and fitness in the work place. Entering as a team is also great for staff cohesion and crossdepartmental competiveness. The first 4 runners from any company to cross the finish line make up a “team” and will be shown on the results table showing your company name in lights. Some companies like to ask each staff member to raise a small amount for charity in return for entry to the Surrey Half. Raising funds is a useful way to involve all employees
including those that just will not run. The half marathon event is accompanied by a Kids’ Challenge which will involve children aged 6-16 who will be taking to the roads to complete a 2km route before their big finish under the main race gantry. HOT vs. COLD Body contouring at the Light Touch Clinic
Get your body summer-ready at the Light Touch Clinic with two of the best fat-busting treatments in the world: Coolsculpting and Vanquish. Both treatments are non-invasive, FDA-approved and have a fantastic track record of success. Providing a healthy lifestyle is maintained, fat reduction results are permanent.
44 FEBRUARY 2016
COOLSCULPTING CoolSculpting is the original fat-freezing (cryolipolysis) treatment. With millions of procedures performed across the globe, it’s the world’s most popular non-surgical fat reduction solution as well as a favourite at the Light Touch Clinic.
HOW IT WORKS
The body area of stubborn fat is gently drawn into the treatment head, creating a vacuum, and exposed to a low temperature. The cold will cause the fat cells to die and be naturally removed from the body. While the temperature is low enough to destroy the fat cells, it will not affect any surrounding tissue. The machine also has a built-in sensor which prevents the temperature from dropping low enough to cause freeze burn. This makes it one of the safest fatfreezing treatments in the world.
BEST FOR
We recommend CoolSculpting for those looking to tackle a stubborn pocket of fat such as inner thighs, moobs and flanks.
VANQUISH Vanquish is the latest fat-reduction treatment to join the Light Touch Clinic and we are seeing excellent results. The unique selling point of Vanquish is that it has the largest spot size in the industry. This means that the entire abdomen, including flanks, can be treated in one 1-hour session.
HOW IT WORKS
Vanquish uses heat energy from radio-frequency to destroy fat cells. Thanks to its clever thermal selection system, Vanquish only targets fat tissue and does not deliver heat to surrounding non-fatty tissues. This makes it a very comfortable treatment. Over time, the dead fat cells are removed through the body’s lymphatic system.
BEST FOR
As Vanquish treats larger areas, we recommend it for those looking to debulk. It is also the better option for larger patients seeking fat reduction.

Banish the Blemishes: Acne One of the most common, problematic skin conditions is acne. Acne affects 73% of 11 to 30 year olds in the UK, but is notoriously hard to treat. However, help is at hand!
N
ow, ProSkin Clinics are now offering revolutionary treatments that can help alleviate even the severest forms of acne without need for medication. Acne can manifest in several different forms that are distinguished by the different type of blemishes you may have. All types of blemishes can cause low self confidence, and even depression. Whilst every case of acne is different, the primary cause is sebaceous glands in the skin producing excess amounts of an oily substance called sebum. The excess sebum mixes with dead skin cells, which can then form a plug in the surface of the skin and become infected and inflamed by normally harmless bacteria that live on the skin. This is especially common during adolescence because of the changes in hormones we release during puberty. A large body of research links increases in testosterone (which can affect both men and women) during puberty to teenage acne, caused by the sebaceous glands’ high sensitivity to hormones. Acne can also be hereditary, with the likelihood of having it considerably higher if either of your parents also had it. To find out which treatment suits you best, come and visit one of ProSkin’s dedicated team of specialist aestheticians. They can offer expert advice on the best treatment during a free consultation before you commit to a treatment plan. One very effective treatment is TheraClear(™) which can help combat even the severest cases of acne.Unlike other traditional treatments, TheraClear combines a powerful light that kills the bacteria that causes acne with a vacuum that evacuates the debris that blocks the pores. TheraClear has a 90% success rate for treating inflammatory and cystic acne. Scarring after the initial active acne can affect up to

Like a blow-dry in a can, Macadamia Professional Style Extend Dry Shampoo, £19.95, uses volcanic ash to soak up excess oils and refresh second - or even third - day hair in seconds. Unlike other dry shampoos, it feels more like a hairspray, with no white chalky residue in sight, and a creamy coconut scent to boot (www.macadamiahair.co.uk).

PULP UP THE VOLUME
Avocado continues its reign as the trendiest breakfast food around, but the creamy green fruit is more than just Instagram fodder. Vivderma Sculpting Neck & Chest Cream, £45, contains Effipulp, a peptide derived from avocado that helps to boost skin volume and detoxify cells (www.vivderma.com).

TRUFFLE SHUFFLE
To celebrate 21 years of leading the way in perfumery, Jo Malone MBE has created Jo Loves Red Truffle 21, £65 for 50ml, a fragrance that blends the distinctive aroma of the precious fungus with bergamot, fig, juniper and patchouli. “Looking back, I don’t think I would ever have had the confidence to use such a unique and unusual ingredient as truffle until now,” Jo says (www.joloves.com).

Pantone declared itså Colour of 2016 - well, two colours actually, as Rose Quartz and Serenity Blue. Prove that you’ve got your finger on the pulse with a coat of Yves Saint Laurent La Laque Couture Nail Lacquer in Love Pink, £19. This pale opalescent pink has an almost holographic jade shine, so nods to both hip hues (www.houseoffraser.co.uk).
A DROP FROM THE OCEAN
Hailed as beauty’s Next Big Thing, astaxanthin is the substance that gives shellfish their pink hue, and it also happens to be a highly-concentrated source of antioxidants for humans. It can be found in Ingenious Beauty Ultimate Collagen+, £75 for a 40-day course, a supplement that plumps skin from the inside and strengthens nails and hair (www.ingeniousbeauty.com).
EASY PEAS-Y
Any anti-ageing cream worth its salt is packed with peptides, but Institut Esthederm Lift & Repair Absolute Repulp Balm, £69, goes one further. The formula uses an innovative new technique to harness pea peptides, which have a double-strength firming effect, alongside a host of other wrinkle-banishing ingredients (www.spacenk.com).
RUB THE RIGHT WAY
Usually found in the potting shed, perlite is sometimes added to soil, but ground down, it makes a very effective (and not too abrasive) exfoliator. The volcanic glass is combined with an enzyme exfoliant and oxygen-rich mousse in the Filorga Scrub & Mask, £38 (Available late January; www.marksandspencer.com)
JOIN THE MARINES
If excess oil is top of your list of skin concerns, zinc could be the answer to your prayers. Thalgo Purete Marine Absolute Purifying Mask, £21.50, is laced with two types of zinc-rich algae, helping to control sebum production by tightening pores (www.thalgo.co.uk). a makeover that promises a flawless, airbrushed foundation finish.
fter giving me a gorgeous smokyeye look, make-up artist Selina sets to work on my foundation. She smooths on a serum primer and moisturiser before applying the Airbase concealer with a small brush - it works like magic and quickly hides any sign of rosiness, especially around my nose. Airbase is applied with a spray gun that feels like a cold blow-dry on the skin, and the foundation has to be mixed for the perfect colour. For me, Selina
squeezes a blend of two shades into a small container at the top of the gun before turning the machine on. Holding the nozzle 6cm away from my skin, she works on one area at a time, starting from the cheek to chin, then eyes to forehead and temple, and lastly down the nose, before repeating the process. The silicone-based formula feels light and silky, and the second application gives me a little more coverage on problem areas. My skin really does look flawless! She finishes with a touch of bronzer and blusher, before
finally brushing on a finishing powder.” Verdict: 4 out of 5. Fantastic coverage and the make-up lasted well, but it did take over an hour to apply and I needed a couple of touch-ups later in the day. Airbase is available at The Make-Up Salon in Urban Retreat at Harrods (www.urbanretreat. co.uk), £100 for a one-hour session, or £199 for a home system including foundation and a blusher or bronzer (www.airbasemakeup.com).

National Heart Month ‘Look After Your Heart’

he heart pumps 6 litres of blood around the body per minute, increasing to 18 litres during exercise and pregnancy, to deliver oxygen and nutrients to all body tissue. Unfortunately, avoiding problems with this vital organ is not always possible as ageing, genetics and unidentifiable factors make everyone at risk of heart disease. However, you can look after your heart by not smoking, monitoring your blood pressure and cholesterol levels, exercising moderately and regularly, and being careful with your diet (in particular avoiding too much sugar and fat). With February being ‘National Heart Month’ to raise awareness of the UK’s biggest killer - cardiovascular disease, Dr Vinod Achan gives some advice on what symptoms to look out for.
heart and take a detailed x-ray of the coronary arteries. The identified blocked artery is then reopened using a fine wire, balloon and a stent. Quick responses are essential as risk of death following a heart attack is 40% if untreated. Dr Vinod Achan, Consultant Cardiologist, qualified from Oxford University and was a Fulbright Scholar at Stanford University, California. Dr Achan works for the NHS at Frimley Park Hospital, a designated 24/7 regional Heart Attack Centre performing over 1200 coronary angioplasties a year and delivering emergency cardiac care to a population of one million people. He also practices privately at Spire Clare Park Hospital, Farnham.
What is Angina?
Angina occurs when the arteries narrow beyond 60% restricting the blood flow to the heart. Occasionally, Angina has no warning signs whatsoever but usually produces symptoms such as jaw pain, upper back discomfort, a tight or heavy chest which may spread into the shoulders and/ or neck and shortness of breath during physical activity. Symptoms typically resolve with rest.
Angina occurs when the arteries narrow beyond 60% restricting the blood flow to the heart.
What should I do if I think I have Angina?
Angina is considered ‘stable’ when symptoms develop with activity but resolve with rest. Individuals experiencing these symptoms should seek urgent advice from a GP and then a cardiologist. A cardiologist will decide the best treatment following a treadmill test, a heart ultrasound and potentially an angiogram. When symptoms develop during rest, regarded as ‘unstable’, individuals should seek urgent treatment.
What is a heart attack?
Heart attacks are the most common cause of death in the developed world caused by a complete blockage of a coronary artery. The symptoms are similar to Angina but also include sweating, feeling faint, vomiting and sometimes collapsing. However, worryingly 25% of heart attacks do not produce any recognisable symptoms.
THE DETAILS
How are heart attacks treated?
Thirty years ago there was no specific heart attack treatment available; and only 80% of those who survived the initial attack would have left hospital after a two week rest. Now, patients are treated using an emergency coronary angioplasty, increasing survival rate to 96%, and requires only a two or three day stay in hospital and with a lower risk of subsequent heart failure. As well as losing weight and looking and feeling better, those who exercise regularly have more energy and better concentration. in for a fast facial fix.
’ve never been a fan of express facials. In my experience, half an hour in the salon never seems to equate to much more than a pamper session you could have performed in the bathtub at home. The 40-minute Katherine Daniels Express Energising Radiance Treatment, however, may have changed my mind. The therapist starts with a thorough cleanse, which involves a cleansing milk and massaging strokes from two vibrating devices which use an ultra high frequency with 1,500 soft silicone massage points. It feels a bit odd, and is very tickly around the nose, but it isn’t unpleasant at all. Next, Hyaluronic Acid Solution is
painted on to my face (everything goes on warm, so your zen is left undisturbed), followed by a mask containing algae extract to flood the skin with moisture and minerals. I then drift off as the therapist gives me a dry scalp and neck massage. My skin is definitely clearer and apparently, the plumped, smoothed and firming effect of the treatment lasts up to 10 days, so it’s a good investment of your lunch break.” Katherine Daniels Express Energising Radiance Treatment is available at salons and spas nationwide, from £38. O
nce you’ve learnt to play with the options, there’s no limit to the effects you can enjoy, but with such a huge array of lighting on offer, the right choice for your home may not always be glaringly obvious. Here, experts reveal their illuminating advice on ‘seeing the light’, and the top trends for 2016...
BIG & BOLD Industrial style is vying with innovative lighting design for attention - and size does matter for today’s lamps, says Mark Holloway, 44, owner of lighting and furniture specialists, Holloways of Ludlow. SWITCH ON: To large lights - chandeliers, drum pendants and giant floor lamps - and materials such as wood veneers, concrete and hand-blown glass. LEADING LIGHTS: Solid, down-to-earth style is embodied in an Old School Electric Oval Bulkhead Light, in a brass finish, £55. Diva Floor Lamp, £1,749, combines a mouthblown inner glass globe with an exterior made from 32 individual pieces of wood, and is available in laminated oak or walnut.
LIGHTBULB MOMENT Decorative light bulbs, glass shades and cluster pendants are stars of this year’s light range, says Kirstin White, 29, lighting buyer at Habitat. SWITCH ON: To feature lighting - oversized floor lamps through to decorative wall lights - as a form of functional art, which will make a statement in any room. LEADING LIGHTS: Decorative light bulbs, in all shapes and sizes, can be an easy way to add interest, with a Calex bulb, from £10, enclosing a cluster of LED lights, particularly eye-catching. Make a statement with a Bulle Triple Cluster Glass Drop Pendant, £225, (available February), or a Tessellate Gold Metal LED Decorative Wall Light, £275. 6 FEBRUARY 2016
MAJOR IN METAL Metallics, especially copper’s warm tones, combine with light to give a warm glow, and will take centre stage in this year’s collections, says Victoria Atkin, 45, co-founder of Atkin And Thyme, specialists in hand-crafted and artisan homeware. SWITCH ON: To pieces made in a traditional way by skilled craftsmen, which bring authenticity to an interior, and embrace transparency with clear glass bases or shades. LEADING LIGHTS: A Castello Three Cluster Ceiling Pendant is a beauty as well as a bargain, as it’s currently reduced from £49 to £29. Floor lamps are versatile, because they can be moved to highlight a feature or area at will, and a Hector Angled Floor Lamp in Copper, £159, is handsome as well as practical. If you love the see-through look, a Kensington Hand Blown Glass Table Lamp With Black Shade, £99, is super-smart.
COLOUR & CALM More use of colour, and co-ordinating the style of a room’s lights, are two strong features highlighted by Nadia McCowan Hill, 32, style expert at online interiors company, Wayfair. SWITCH ON: To tailoring lighting to make the most of a room’s size and shape. Up-lighting makes a space feel larger, low-hung pendants give an impression of height and clusters of lights add cosiness. LEADING LIGHTS: Colour and contemporary style combine in a 10 Light Cascade Pendant by Endon Lighting, £249.60, which has a cluster of multi-coloured tear-shaped glass shades. A 1 Light Mini Pendant by Pacific Lifestyle, £42.99, is covered in faux silk, available in cream or grey and has the appearance of a flower opening. Satisfy your desire to be a star in your own show with a Hollywood Directors Table Lamp by House Additions, in black and gunmetal, £67.99 (down from £79.99).

n 2006 the founders, Jacquie and Matt bought their first home and intended to use it as a canvas to create a great interior. They immediately went in search of all things shabby chic. After months of wading through the UK’s retail market they struggled to find both beautiful and affordable French furniture and ended up with that oldadage that if you want something done right; you have to do it yourself! So, they sailed to France and brought back truckloads of beautiful furniture to sell in the then brand new company, Sweetpea & Willow. It turned out that their customers shared their passion and direction and since 2006, Sweetpea & Willow has become one of the fastest-growing, award-winning companies in the UK. Always led by their goal of sourcing stylish pieces to make your house into a home. Not only do Sweetpea & Willow import from approximately seven different countries but they are also proud to produce their Exclusive range right here in London. Sweetpea & Willow gives you everything that they cherish: beautiful furniture, lighting, cushions, armoires, beds, sofas, chairs and garden furniture to name but a few. Their style along with their website is always evolving as they search for fabulous new objects to help enrich your homes. Success comes with growth and development, so after some time the directors thought, why not create our own unique pieces? thus ‘Handmade in London’ was born. However, they didn’t want to be the only ones to create furniture, they understood that sometimes you can’t always find what you are looking for, and so adopted the option of allowing the customers the ability to create or recreate almost anything in their London factory. Just let them know and the designers will see what they can do for you. Sweetpea & Willow combine the best of French shabby chic with contemporary British products to create a beautiful marriage between inspiration, product and execution, and it is from this, that they became the premier destination for elite luxury interiors. They have built a library of gorgeous linens, velvets and
fabrics to choose from, the world is your oyster and there is no challenge they won’t accept. Visit their amazing 8000 sq.ft showroom, hosting candlelit rooms, that not only showcases their vision but is also there to inspire your own. This year Sweetpea & Willow celebrate their 10th birthday and have so much to be proud of, from launching luxury deep mattresses that are all handmade to ensure the highest quality and protection, to being awarded ‘Winner of the Best Small Retailer Of The Year Award’. They have had an array of success and achievements over the years but are not planning on slowing down anytime soon. The team there are already working on the next best thing! stablished in 1986, Surrey & Sussex Tree Surgery has been providing professional tree management solutions to clients across the South East for almost 30 years. As a former employee of the company, I took over the business in August 2006. With an impressive existing client base, I have continued to expand our range of services and capabilities through ongoing training and investment in the latest equipment. Our current client base is over 90% domestic households. Working predominantly in this way keeps us at the top of our game, and we understand that your garden is your sanctuary. From the daffodils you have waited all year to bloom, to your delicate shrubs, we take every care to ensure your garden is left as tidy as we found it. As well as domestic clients, we have worked for some impressive Commercial and Local Authority clients including; National Trust Petworth House, The Diocese of Guildford, Rydes Hill Preparatory School, The WWF, Watts Gallery Compton, Blenheim House Construction, The ITS Group, and Cranleigh Parish Council to name but a few. As an associate member of the Arboricultural Association, we keep up to date with the latest techniques, equipment, best practice, and pests and diseases research. This allows us to offer the most professional care possible for your trees and hedges. Thinking of planting new shrubs or trees? Surrey & Sussex Tree Surgery are specialists in providing and planting trees and shrubs of any size. New Colours I
n celebration of their seventieth year, Farrow & Ball are excited to announce the launch of nine new paint colours. From soft naturals and muted pastels, to strong brights and rich dark tones, the new additions celebrate the timeless Farrow & Ball look and add new accents to their iconic colour palette. The colours have been skilfully created by a small team of experts over the past three years and every hue is intriguingly named with its own unique backstory – another Farrow & Ball tradition. Taken from the soft tone created when whites are covered in deep shade, Shadow White is a lighter version of their ever popular Shaded White. With none of the perceived yellow of Slipper Satin or overt grey of Ammonite, it is an utterly useable and understated neutral. It works beautifully with the slightly darker Drop Cloth, named in honour of all the painters and decorators who work with Farrow & Ball paints every day. These new coloured whites are a welcome addition to theirmuch-loved neutral families, with Shadow White, Drop Cloth and Shadow White creating a relaxed, effortless feel when used together, Continuing this calm, tranquil feel are their new muted pastels, which turn homes in places of sanctuary and escape. Named after the floaty garment worn by ladies while brushing their hair in the mid-20th century, Peignoir is wonderfully romantic pink which is tempered by a big dose of grey, making it feel very traditional while still being totally on trend. Conjuring images of swirling mists and named after the Scottish estuary often referenced in the Shipping Forecast, Cromarty brings a delicate softness to any room. A lighter

version of Mizzle, another of their weather-inspired colours, Cromarty works beautifully when paired with Light Blue, or grouped with Blue Gray and Pigeon. For devotees of their grey-based Easy Neutrals family, Worsted is stronger in tone than its counterpart Purbeck Stone, but lighter than Mole’s Breath. The colour brings to mind city suits made from the flat woven Worsted fabric and named after the Norfolk village where the yarn was originally spun. Honouring Farrow & Ball’s roots, their new muted drabs provide a rich, dramatic backdrop to the home. Salon Drab evokes a classic 19th century feel while remaining the perfect go-to ‘chocolate’ for modern homes. Meanwhile the indefinable Inchyra Blue, which can read more grey, blue or even green depending on the light, is the perfect alternative to charcoal in super contemporary spaces. Their final two new colours create vibrant, optimistic interiors that truly lift the spirits. Lush, verdant Yeabridge Green is the cleanest and most uncomplicated of their greens and is particularly inspiring when paired with handsome Stiffkey Blue. Similarly, Vardo is colour full of life and joy. The rich teal, named after a traditional Romany wagon, looks fantastically elegant when paired with reds such as Radicchio and super sultry with the dark grey of Down Pipe. IMPROVING, RATHER THAN MOVING, STILL THE TREND?
Recent Lloyds Bank research shows over 14 million people in the UK have undertaken major work on their current property, or plan to do so within the next year in order to improve or add value to their home.
A
ccording to the Lloyds Bank study, almost 2.2 million people can’t afford to move, but have instead opted to improve their current house, plus a 1/3rd of UK homeowners carried out home improvements with the specific aim of adding value to their property. Once homeowners look into the costs of moving, such as the cost of hiring an estate agent, buildings surveyor, mortgage arrangement fees, solicitors, removal company fees, plus various legal fees, including conveyance fees and stamp duty tax, these fees add up to make an already expensive expense even more expensive. The Independent’s home improvement commentators have a different slant on things concluding “Improving your home rather than trading it in for another can be a very good investment. It’s cheaper to make space than buy it.” The comparison website MoneySuperMarket.com suggestion to property owners is that “staying put and extending or changing the layout could prove a costeffective alternative to changing properties altogether.” Research published by the Halifax Building Society showed that almost 20% of those questioned desire to move into a UK property that requires no home improvements. If this is true, a staggering one in five of the population would prefer to buy a house that needs nothing doing to it, 88 FEBRUARY 2016
which if they can afford to throw money away like that well OK, but is surely not so sensible a move for hard working middle England who tend to work more hand to mouth. Buying a “ready made” home is often very expensive option, as one either pays a premium to the property developer who built and/or renovated the property, or alternatively a handsome profit to the home owner who did up the property in order to gain a substantial return on a relatively modest investment in risk/reward terms. Consequently, is it not far more sensible financially for anyone considering buying a house to instead actually be the property owner who carries out the home improvements, thereby being the ones to benefit from any subsequent increase in property value? With the pace of recovery from the latest recession being painfully slow, and many householders having less and less disposable income, homeowners continue to improve rather than move, which is good news at least for the DIY industry and the likes of B&Q, Homebase, Screwfix and Wickes. Independent double glazing manufacturers and installers, Hazlemere Windows have seen
an increasing number of property owners enquiring about replacement double glazed windows and doors for their extension and/or loft conversion. In addition, growing families are looking into the feasibility of adding a conservatory or orangery onto their house to provide much needed extra high quality living space, be it a kitchen/diner, gym, home office, play room, dining room, extra or enlarged living room. Building a conservatory or hybrid orangery can be more aesthetically pleasing than a full blown brick built extension with a tiled or flat roof. Despite the changes to the Building Regulations that came into effect on 1st October 2010, and the new legal requirement that all UK
Building a conservatory or hybrid orangery can be more aesthetically pleasing than a full blown brick built extension with a tiled or flat roof property owners (replacing any existing window(s) and/or door(s), or indeed building an extension) must now fit compliant higher performing thermally efficient fenestration products, it is still easier and less costly to obtain the necessary permissions to build a conservatory. Plus as long as Building Regulations are not required, it is usually far quicker to obtain all appropriate legal approvals to add a conservatory to your property, as long as you don’t live in a flat that has no outdoor ground level space! Also a UPVC or aluminium double glazed conservatory is much less expensive to build and available for home owners to utilise as additional living space a lot sooner than an actual extension that requires both time consuming planning permission and Building Regulatory Approval, plus signing off by a Building Control Officer from your local planning department when finished. Building an extension that matches in, loft conversion and/or conservatory will add value to any home; whilst at the same time provide invaluable extra living space. These types of home improvement options done professionally to a high standard are far far less costly than the massive expense of moving house, especially when you take into legal fees, so is it no surprise that so many UK property owners decide to improve rather than move.
