‘The Ark’ at St George’s Junior School opens

N

ovember was an exciting and truly historic month for the Lower Years’ pupils and staff of St George’s Junior School, Weybridge, as the doors to their amazing new building - called ‘The Ark’ - opened. Imaginatively built and brightly decorated throughout, The Ark provides 240 girls and boys in the Lower Years with a range of modern learning facilities, including animal themed classrooms, cleverly designed resource areas, a dedicated IT suite, a new ‘Rainbow Room’ for assemblies and various outdoor learning spaces, as well as a living grass ‘sedum’ roof to help the building blend into its surroundings. Friday 23 November saw the boys and girls in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 helping to box up their belongings and going ‘on the move’ into their new classrooms. Awe and wonder filled their faces as they took their first tours around the new building, which they have watched gradually come to life over the last year. Lessons started the following Monday and over recent days the children have been enjoying the many benefits of their new surroundings. The response so far has been incredibly positive from pupils and staff alike, and there is a collective confidence that The Ark will provide a fun and fulfilling learning environment in which current and future generations of Georgians can thrive. Referring to the new interactive whiteboards which are

one of the features of the new classrooms, Year 1 pupil Beth said: “My favourite thing about The Ark is the big screen in my classroom, because we can draw patterns on it”, while her classmate Thomas said that he liked “the beautiful carpet and the automatic doors”. When asked what he liked best about it, Reception pupil Oliver was stumped. “I can’t choose my favourite thing about The Ark because it’s so cool!” he said. Speaking recently, Junior School Headmaster Antony Hudson said: “The Ark is a very welcome addition to the facilities that the Junior School provides, and demonstrates just how vitally important Early Years’ education is. The children love ‘coming home to school’ each day and they are already making the most of their new surroundings!” A new look Nursery is also currently being built to sit harmoniously alongside The Ark, and will open in Spring 2016. The Art Agency A fter a very busy 2015 The Art Agency is planning another exciting calendar for 2016. The owners Alison and Emma opened on Esher High Street in October 2011 but having outgrown their original space moved to bigger premises at 118-120 High Street, Esher last summer and now enjoy more than 3 times the wall space over two floors. This friendly and approachable gallery displays a wide variety of artwork to suit most tastes and equally importantly, budgets with original art from £200.

Pam Carter

Featured Artists early in 2016 include:

Alison and Emma pride themselves on their customer service and offer a no obligation ‘Try before you Buy’ service so clients can be certain that a painting will be right for their home. They can also arrange payment via an interest free payment scheme ‘OwnArt for Art you can’t afford to miss’.

Richard Knight

Richard’s bold paintings are inspired by large metropolis, mainly London, using a combination of colour, tone and texture and a variety of application techniques to express the drama, light and vitality of urban life. The Art Agency are currently showing a collection of his iconic Battersea paintings but his distinctive style can also be applied to many subjects and he is now the gallery’s most commissioned artist.

The gallery will be hosting a solo show for internationally renowned Scottish artist Pam Carter in March. Pam spends the summer in Skye and the Outer Isles from where she draws the inspiration for many of her colourful, atmospheric oils, which capture the remoteness and peacefulness of that unspoilt region of Scotland. This rugged West Scottish Coast provides the ideal subject matter with its isolated cottages and wild colours of the machair and brachen.

Bill Bate

Bill has always been inspired by the human figure and the effect light has upon it. He uses various ways of portraying the body such as dance, swimming and also boxing but it is the body itself that interests him – the physicality of the form and the beauty of the athletic figure - rather than the activities in particular. Bill has an idea of how he wants the painting to look but in some pieces his original idea moves into something else and he leaves some of the older workings, the initial sketches and drawing, the “structure” visible to show the energy of the piece. New work arriving February 2016.

Leanne Christie

Leanne is the latest artist to join The Art Agency and her vibrant flowerscapes, English country gardens & wild flower meadows will bring some colour and sparkle to any room. Her paintings are predominately oil, embellished with glitter, jewels and gold leaf. 1 8 JANUARY 2 0 1 6

THE OPENING OF WATTS STUDIOS

26 January G F and Mary Watts, Victorian artists and visionaries, built their home, Limnerslease, in the Surrey Hills amongst the breath-taking scenery of the Pilgrims’ Way. The Watts Studios will restore that sense of wonderment found at Limnerslease, bringing back G F and Mary Watts’s vision of ‘Art for All’ and adding a new exciting element to the Artists’ Village – a heritage house, historic galleries, ornate chapel and tea rooms. In the G F Watts Studio, the smell of oils and varnish will fill the air and strewn on desks will be letters in the artist’s own hand. Around the room will be unfinished canvases displayed on easels or suspended from the rafters in this vast cathedrallike space. The recreation of G F Watts’s studio will transport the visitor back to his workspace, allowing them to explore the artistic processes of one of the 19th century’s most eminent artists. An entire gallery will be devoted to the work of Mary Watts, displaying works of art never seen before alongside pieces delicately and painstakingly restored to their former glory,

including the Aldershot Panels. Mary’s personal thoughts and notes will be present in the form of archival diaries, notebooks and films giving an insight into the life of Mary and the local community. An in-house conservator will also be busy at work, restoring Compton Pottery, and The Compton Gallery will create links between the Wattses and the local area, a specially commissioned film, charting the heritage of Limnerslease and its national cultural importance, will introduce visitors to the Arts & Crafts house on the hill. Accompanying this, archival material and paintings of the Surrey landscape that will help complete the story of the Wattses Artists’ Village in Compton. Watts Gallery have also restored the surrounding landscape at Limnerslease, providing visitors with pleasant woodland gardens in which to stroll. The lively and creative atmosphere of the Watts Studios will be revived through craft workshops for all from under 5s to 95s. So come to visit the Artists’ Village and see the opening of Watts Studios: Unlocking the past and making the future.

BROTHERS IN ART: DRAWINGS BY WATTS & LEIGHTON 17 November – 19 February Friends for 40 years, G F Watts and Frederic Leighton enjoyed one of the Victorian era’s longest and most productive artistic partnerships. Although both men were celebrated painters, drawing was the skill they most admired in one another. Masterful, personal, and beautiful, their drawings are imaginative records of their artistic ideals and reveal the pair’s extraordinary technical ability. Showcasing some of the artists’ never-beforeseen masterpieces, this exhibition will bring Watts’s and Leighton’s finest drawings together for the first time. A series of tours and talks accompany the exhibition.

VEREY WINTER ILLUMINATIONS 27 November 2015 – 28 February Explore the wintery woodlands to discover these works created specifically for the Artists’ Village by contemporary artists Terry Perk and Julian Rowe. Come outside into the grounds of the gallery to experience the magic of the Winter Illuminations installation. Back by popular demand, this year Perk & Rowe, artist and Reader in Fine Art respectively, have collaborated to create a space to enjoy light and nature all in the same place. From the end of November, Verey Winter Illuminations will remain for the opening of the Watts Studios in early 2016, adding 21st century art to the Village while connecting the natural setting of the Artists’ Village and the surrounding Wilfrid Blunt Woodland. The mosaics of kaleidoscope lights are inspired by the medieval imagery of the terracotta tiles in Watts Chapel.

paintings, many of which have not been exhibited since the artist’s lifetime. Watts Gallery is a fitting venue for such a landmark exhibition of a female Victorian artist.

LUCY DICKENS

Great-great grand daughter of the ‘inimitable’ Charles, a London painter who loves to take a peep behind the scenes

L

ucy Dickens calls herself ‘a people watcher, a nosey parker with a vivid imagination’ . As a true Dickensian, she observes and records London life, with a gently satirical take on her subjects. She loves the glitter and the gold of grand hotels, especially the Ritz, Piccadilly, where the waiters, the porters and the barmen quietly attend to the orders of lipsticked blue-lidded ladies in body- con frocks, blow dries and high heels. Palace hotels and fancy restaurants are ‘wonderful stages’ she says, ‘full of pomp and circumstance, costumes, uniforms and old traditions enacted daily as the guests come and go.’ Her critique, layered with wit, is not savage, though it has unconscious echoes of the more ferocious style of English painter Edward Burra (1905-1976) who

Lucy also thinks of herself as a ‘camera’, a painterreporter sitting quietly in the Ritz lounge captured the dapper dudes of 1920s Harlem, New York, Paris and Marseilles, as well as the genteel tea shops of East Sussex. She recognises the influences of Walter Sickert (18601942), a painter of London’s seedier side, and the German artist Otto Dix (1891-1969) who captured Berlin decadence we know from Cabaret and Christopher Isherwood in ‘I am a Camera.’ in between the two World Wars. Lucy also thinks of herself as a ‘camera’, a painterreporter sitting quietly in the Ritz lounge with her coffee and biscuits, making little sketches of people chatting, or simply promenading, her eyes darting about to capture scenes from any angle. These sketches turn into full scale paintings in her North London studio. In her own words: ‘My characters are based on real people, but they become larger than life as the painting progresses. What’s the story with that group of men in the hotel bar? Are they planning a heist? Or just discussing a board meeting? What about that woman the red dress? Is she a hooker? A trophy wife? what dramas has he witnessed over the years?’ Lucy Dickens began her career as a full-time artist in 1990. After a spell as fashion stylist for Conde Nast, she became a freelance illustrator, working for the Financial Times, The Daily Telegraph, The Daily Mail, Vogue, Brides, Harpers Bazaar and Tatler. She began to paint while writing and illustrating a series of children’s books, which were successfully published in London and New York. Her particular gift is to convey the spontaneity of the scene before her. That edgy Central London glamour that she knows so well from years working in Berkeley Square, informs her work, though the Waldorf Astoria, Manhattan produced a fascinating insight or two during a recent trip to New York.

TRADITIONAL BUTCHERY WITH A MODERN TWIST

I

n the highly sought after village of Oxshott sits a very traditional butchers shop, sadly becoming increasingly rare these days. We spoke with Simon Taylor, patron butcher of Surrey Hills Butchers, to see why his butchers is going from strength to strength. “We pride ourselves on being traditional as well as moving with the times. I have learnt from some very traditional butchers and I use these teachings and then apply forward- thinking to create twists on classics”. Simon says that not only do they still offer classic cuts for the classic cook but they are willing to do more of the leg work in almost creating ready meals. “We make a lot of ready to go products these days like stir-fry and handmade chicken kievs ready to cook”. Simon has worked in traditional butcher shops since the age of thirteen meaning he has seen the trade move for over twenty years and has been running his own for the past four. “Butcher shop numbers do worry me as they have been in decline for decades, and all we can do really is keep trying to educate people that it is far more natural to buy what you can actually see”. Simon went on to say our “disconnection” from meat was the real cause of the horse-meat scandal, not being able to see or trust what is happening behind closed doors. He believes in old school face to face transactions where people can ask questions and more importantly see what is happening to their food. He goes on to explain “Here at Surrey Hills Butchers we always try to use as much local produce as we can. We do of course have standards, we like to meet these standards and keep the produce local wherever possible. It is always a pleasure dealing with farmers and their families as well as market men. We are very lucky to have some great farmers around us and to be based next door to the Surrey Hills. As well as having a 4th generation market man at Smithfield on our side. We mix with the sort of people who care about their livestock; from field to plate starts very much with the farmer. Every step of our food’s journey is important, from how the animal is fed to how it is slaughtered. Not to mention how it is butchered and cooked!”

The newest battle for Surrey Hills Butchers is the new research into cancer-causing preservatives. Even though this has been thought to be the case for a long time, The World Health Organisation now say there is a direct link between processed meats and cancer. He says “I think we do need to be careful with how this is worded and how we explain processed meat… I think new guide lines and clearer information need to be given out to butchers and alike as quickly as possible”. Although Simon claims to be no scientist himself I wonder if he had seen this coming telling me that at Surrey Hills Butchers they have been making a range of preservative free sausages and burgers for a long time. I certainly would not be surprised if he sees a big uptake in those. “This all goes back to being open again, having that relationship with our customers, we can actually talk to each other and look at the options available to them”. In speaking with Simon on these issues I feel he is indeed very traditional yet also young enough to move with modern times and give advice. I don’t think this latest test will stop him moving forward. To end our chat I asked him what the future holds for Surrey Hills Butchers. “Although I have done this for a long time I know the world of food moves daily. I will always go forward being open and ready to be reeducated”.

It’s a New Year … time for a new you! Image courtesy of L’Oreal

I

f you were a little naughty in the hair department in 2015, then now’s the perfect time to turn things around and put an end to those bad hair habits. Victor Pajak, owner of the award-winning Headquarters Hair Salon in Kingston, suggests some New Hair Resolutions which are guaranteed to get you great results for 2016.

Victor Pajak, Headquarters Kingston upon Thames

I will dare to wear a new hairstyle (but not on impulse!)

At Headquarters we often see clients who have grown their hair to a fabulous length - and then decide to chop it all off in the New Year – on impulse – only to regret it a week later and start growing it out again. Everyone’s prone to hair-boredom – but do talk to your hairdresser before you go from one extreme to the other. Hairdressers can suggest all kinds of ways to freshen up your look – fringes, layering, adding texture, changing a parting. Then there’s the Lob (long bob) which can be a perfect half-way house on the journey from long hair to short hair. And if, after you’ve chatted it through, you really do want something completely different to last year, then you’ll be doing it confident in the knowledge that you’re really prepared to make that change.

I will look after my colour.

We all love glamorous, glossy beautiful colour – but it’s not cheap – so if you’re investing your money in quality hair colour, then it makes good sense to take good care of it once you leave the salon. Protect your investment with a colour specialist range such as the Kerastase Chroma Captive 3-step system – a shampoo, conditioner and weekly masque which together will preserve your colourdepth for up to 40 days, reduce fading by at least 30%, and maximise light-reflection. 5 2 JANUARY 2 0 1 6

I promise to “air-dry” more and “Heat-treat” less.

It’s pretty much a given that women want what they can’t have when it comes to their hair. If you were blessed with tumbling curls, then you’ve probably spent 2015 addicted to your straighteners to achieve straight, sleek locks; and if your hair is sleeky-straight, then no doubt you’ve been relentlessly tonging curls into it. So, in 2016, give your hair a break - and try to work with the texture that nature has given you. Heat treating your hair too much can lead to fried strands, split ends, frizziness and breakage. So aim to air-dry your hair once a week – and when you are applying heat always use a thermal protectant product, such as Kerastase Nectar Thermique – winner of In Style magazines “Best Heat protector” award. It will speed up your blow-dry time considerably – and significantly prevent breakage.

I will Deep Condition

If there’s only ONE New Hair resolution you make, this is probably the one it should be. A deep conditioning Masque treatment used weekly will only add 10 minutes or so to your hair routine, but the difference will be long-lasting. It’s the easiest thing you can do to get beautiful glossy hair. To top that up, when you visit the salon, ask for a Fusio-dose to be added at the backwash. These are concentrated “hair-boosters” combined in multiple combinations to give you a tailor-made treatment. It’s instant – so no developing time. The best £15 you’ll ever spend in the hair salon. successful fitness campaign involves positive thinking, hard work and focus. However committing to regular exercise provides many benefits. As well as losing weight and looking and feeling better, those who exercise regularly have more energy and better concentration. Latest research highlights strong links between exercise and brain cell growth, with improved long term memory. The benefits of regular exercise are clear but modern life is busy. Professionals working long hours and busy professional mums can find it difficult to keep to a rigid programme involving going to a gym an hour of the day, three times per week. Marek Ocelka of Marek’s Fitness says: “High achieving, successful individuals and families tend to be the ones who have managed to find flexible solutions to working, playing and exercising that give them the healthy trinity – mind, body and memory - to enable them to look great, feel happy and perform well at work and at home.” “My clients tend to lead very busy lives with careers involving commutes or with families and households

It is never too late to start. Give yourself the same care and attention that you give to your job and your family. You deserve it. Then set clear goals – for yourself and your life – write them down and share them. Look for flexible fitness options that you can integrate into your life Develop the lifestyle that you want – make fitness part of your daily life. Now is the perfect time. Start now - summer bodies are created in the winter – but more importantly, it seems that the most healthy, alert, successful and happy older people start leading healthier lifestyles earlier in their lives.” Modern fitness professionals such as Marek provide flexible training at locations of choice, either a local gym, outside or at a client’s home. Marek’s Fitness members have exclusive access to a revolutionary fitness app with a virtual trainer who can take clients through a personalised programme at their convenience. ake-up artists wielded eyeliner like a weapon, with everything from the classic cat-eye flick to the Sixties ‘floating’ liner getting a fresh new-season remix. These bold looks may take a bit of practice, but the pay-off will be so worth it. Steady hands at the ready, it’s time to toe the line...

BE PREPARED

At Giamba, the youthful off-shoot of Giambattista Valli’s main line, make-up artist Val Garland daubed tattoo-like designs around models’ eyes using black eye pencil. The stars, hearts and musical notes might be a bit much for everyday wear, but Lily Donaldson’s sharp Z-shaped tick is totally achievable with Pur Minerals Double Ego DualEnded Eyeliner in Madagascar, £14, FeelUnique.com.

Like any artistic endeavour, preparation is everything when it comes to perfecting your liner look. Primer is essential for creating a blank canvas; a smooth, oil-free surface to which colour cosmetics can cling. Benefit Air Patrol BB Cream Eyelid Primer, £21.50 contains SPF20, which we often forget about on our eyelids (www. benefitcosmetics.co.uk). If you need a more tailored shade, Artdeco 3 in 1 Eye Primer, £11.60, Debenhams, comes in cool or warm tones (www.debenhams.com).

WINGING IT

Already perfected the cat-eye flick? Then why not take it up a notch with wider winged liner, as seen in teal on the Antonio Berardi catwalk and black at John Galliano. “Unlike the classic flick, for this look you’re going to start with the wing,” explains make-up artist Lisa Potter-Dixon, author of Easy On The Eyes. “Draw a line from the corner of your eye, angled upwards towards the end of your brow. The longer this line, the more dramatic the look, so go as far as you dare. From the tip of this line, draw back towards the centre of the eye, but stop as you 5 8 JANUARY 2 0 1 6

CROSSING THE LINE

FLOAT ON

The most extreme interpretation of the Sixties throwback floating liner came at Rochas, where dense, black curves sat way outside the upper and lower lashlines. The cartoon panda look isn’t for everyone, but Felder Felder’s softer take is much more accessible. Start with a wash of neutral eyeshadow over the lid, then trace a crescent above the crease using Eye of Horus Goddess Pencil in Charcoal Obsidian, £15, BeautyBay.com. There’s no need to be really precise, because afterwards you’re going to gently smudge and blend the line with a brush like the Bobbi Brown Dual Ended Eyeliner/Smokey Eye Liner Brush, £31, to give a more lived-in look (www.bobbibrown.co.uk).

Art Deco 2 Style Eyeliner Brush Premium Quality, available from Debenhams.

The bigger the better was the mantra at House of Holland - thick black brushstrokes were plastered across the eye crease - and at Dior, where neat ovals of khaki, brown or plum extended almost to the eyebrow. For this kind of super-liner, a powder or gel pot and brush are your best bet - the only question is: how bold do you dare to go? Bobbi Brown Intense Pigment Liner in Black Plum, £26.50, (www. bobbibrown.co.uk); Rimmel Scandaleyes Waterproof Gel Liner in Emerald, £6.99, Isn’t it devastating when a limited edition Boots (www.boots.com); product you adore comes to the end of its run? Art Deco 2 Style Eyeliner Well, you’ve now one less lippy to worry about, Brush Premium Quality, because Clarins Instant Light Lip Comfort Oil, £12, Debenhams (www. £18, John Lewis, is now part of the brand’s debenhams.com) permanent collection. Reach for the Bbrowbar Brow Corrector, £17, a clever twoended (one wet, one dry) pen that will help you fix any slips (www.blinkbrowbar.com). Now all you need is a couple of coats of mascara. Heavy eye make-up can make your eyes look smaller, so to counteract that effect, go for a curl-enhancing formula like NARS Audacious Mascara, £21, John Lewis, which uses tiny comb grips to separate and pull your lashes skyward (www. johnlewis.com). Alternatively, amp up the grunge factor with lashings of Max Factor False Lash Effect Velvet Volume Mascara, £8.99, Boots (www. Artdeco 3 in 1 Eye boots.com). O

nline beauty tutorials are a big business these days, generating billions of views and turning amateurs and teens into celebrities (on the internet at least). But in YouTube’s upper echelons, there’s one notable exception: Lisa Eldridge was anything but an amateur when she started uploading how-to clips back in 2009. By that stage, the make-up artist, who grew up in Liverpool, had already racked up more than 15 years’ experience in the industry, adorning the faces of celebrities and supermodels for red carpets and cover shoots. Her staggering client list includes everyone from Kate Moss to Kim Kardashian West (she’s currently responsible for Kate Winslet’s looks while promoting the new Steve Jobs film) and Eldridge has held numerous Creative Director roles at major brands, including her current post at Lancome. As if her schedules weren’t jam-packed enough, Eldridge has just published her first book - but it’s not just a rehash of her most viewed videos. “Everyone expected me to do a how-to book, so I didn’t want to do that,” she laughs, perched in the haberdashery department of Liberty, as a queue of young fans snakes down a stairwell nearby, eagerly awaiting Eldridge’s appearance for a Q&A and book signing session. “The history of make-up has always been a passion and I wanted to scratch that itch.” Face Paint: The Story Of Makeup chronicles cosmetics throughout the ages, from the earliest uses of red ochre in prehistoric times, through to the latest high-tech innovations.

66 2 0JANUARY J A N U A R Y2 02 10 61 6

“My dream is that anyone who reads it, the next morning when they pick up their make-up bag, they’ll look at it in a whole new light,” Eldridge says, revealing that writing the book gave her a whole new appreciation for the freedom we have today, compared to times when make-up was seen as sinful. “Look at this time we’re living through,” she says, gesturing animatedly around the room. “All these women have got whatever make-up they want on today and no one’s criticising them.” It’s clear to the 41-year-old that being a feminist and owning a dozen red lipsticks is not a contradiction. And with her YouTube videos, Eldridge is able to engage with a huge audience (she has more than 1.2 million subscribers) to find out what women really want to know about make-up. So what’s the burning question she gets asked most often? “There’s a couple. They’re usually about skin make-up because people often struggle with foundation. Either they can’t find the right shade to fit their skin tone, or they’re not really sure how to use it with concealer if they want to cover their spots.” Well, Eldridge clearly has the answer, because she claims to have four spots when we speak, but all I can see is flawless skin. And her blemish-banishing video is her most popular of all time, heading for three million views. What you won’t find on this pro’s YouTube channel are the shopping ‘haul’ videos so beloved of teen vloggers, detailing their latest pharmacy finds. “Because I’ve been involved in new product

development for years, when I go shopping here, I tend to know which factory it’s from, or which formulation,” she explains, “so it has to be different, it has to be a colour that I haven’t seen before, that’s the sort of thing that will really stand out to me.”And to make it into her mammoth makeup kit is even harder. “I’m quite scathing,” Eldridge admits. “I don’t want to get caught out doing someone’s make-up on the red carpet and it doesn’t look good, so I really test new products out before they go in the kit.” So what are her tried-and-true treasures? The beauty guru spills the beans on her can’t-live-without cosmetics...

The seemingly never ending increases in the cost of energy, climate change, when combined with environmental and sustainability reasons, makes the need to insulate dwellings essential, although there is no getting away from the fact that there is an initial investment required to achieve long term savings. For home owners planning on moving rather than improving, there is still the need to sell their particular 6 6 JANUARY 2 0 1 6

premises, as houses that still have single glazed windows are not only expensive to heat, but also unattractive to modern day buyers. Shrewd prospective purchasers will demand that the asking price is reduced by at least the cost of carrying out replacement double glazing and fitting insulation throughout, along with no doubt a premium off the asking price for being the ones “being made to carry out this essential work. When it comes to selling up, poorly insulated homes are inevitably shown up by the Energy Performance Certificate that all UK house owners are legally obligated to provide to prospective purchasers. Genuine high quality energy rated replacement windows and doors help a property benefit from solar gain, retaining heat whilst massively reducing the amount of energy lost. They do this by not only have thermally broken frames (be they aluminium, composite or UPVC), but also by being professionally fitted in the first place, and by having a high double glazing

specification involving Low E Argon filled sealed units with warm edge spacers (which help prevent transference of temperature) and specially coated low iron glass that maximizes solar gain whilst stops the heat escaping. The energy savings over time from fitting the highest possible energy saving windows that are “A+” or “A++” energy rated will be significant, so will over-time pay for

available in double glazing and triple glazing), sliding sash windows, Georgian windows and coloured aluminium windows, the latter of course available in any RAL colour (i.e. any colour you like!). Modern thermally broken “A+” rated UPVC double glazed replacement windows are naturally incredibly thermally efficient, highly secure and triple glazed ones are available in the same profile, so aesthetically very attractive as well. Alternatively “A” rated

The very latest thermally broken products are far far more energy efficient that 1st and 2nd generation double glazing themselves, assuming the home owner continues to live in the property. The sheer choice of bespoke replacement windows can be baffling, but as long as an independently certified “A+” double glazed or “A++” triple glazed energy rated window system is selected from installers with a good reputation, one cannot go far wrong. There are different types of window and finishes available to suit any type of UK property. These include aluminium, timber and UPVC casement windows and tilt and turn windows (both

aluminium double glazed windows and doors have a slimmer profile, therefore do offer more glass and light, as well as better views, and of course more attractive sight lines. The very latest thermally broken products are far far more energy efficient that 1st and 2nd generation double glazing. So much so that the levels of performance are vast enough that the BFFC (British Fenestration Rating Council) in 2015 introduced the new higher energy efficiency bands of “A+” and “A++”, with “A” rated having previously been the most energy saving. Whichever energy rated fenestration product a property owner chooses, fitting replacement “A+” energy rated double glazed windows or “A++” energy rated triple glazed windows is a must for any property owner determined to reduce heating bills by the largest amount possible, whilst at the same time improving home security, adding value to their home and improving their day to day living environment. TRANSFORM YOUR HOME

I

n the past when families grew or their circumstances changed, they would move home to accommodate their changing needs. Today it is not as simple as that. Rising house prices, a limited supply of good schools, transport links and the increasing cost of moving house, a growing number of people are choosing to stay put and invest in their existing property to cater for their changing requirements. In the Surrey area, the value added to the property usually always outstrips the cost of the works necessary to renovate and extend the house. While many people go straight to a builder to start the process, discerning clients characteristically appoint an architect to establish a more bespoke and professional approach, where aesthetics and functionality are at the core of the process. Concept Eight Architects has a decade of experience, specialising in private residential projects, the majority being end user clients. Each project brief is unique with the end result being a truly bespoke and customised house designed around the family’s key needs. In recent years, Concept Eight have seen a rise in clients undertaking full house renovations, where the layout and design of the home is significantly altered from the original house. They have transformed Victorian cottages into generous family homes, 1970’s houses into open plan contemporary homes, modest mews houses into large subterranean residences. These renovations allow for some character to be retained while other areas are radically transformed.

Obtaining planning permission is a key milestone in any successful home renovation or extension. A good knowledge of the relevant planning policy of the borough is essential. Each borough approaches residential developments and extensions in a different manner so selecting the right approach not only enables an optimized scheme with a high chance of success for approval. Many clients can be time poor so this approach is essential to ensure an efficient design program. Concept Eight Architects are based in Surrey and know the local planning policy well. This allows for schemes to get consent first time around in most cases. Often a more complex approach is suitable, requiring a mixture of planning permission and permitted development applications. Each approach offers challenges and opportunities and getting the correct blend requires careful consideration. The end result of a scheme can be made up of a mixture of approvals or a single approval, dependant on which are most likely to offer our clients what they are looking for in terms of changes to their homes. If 2016 is the year that you transform your home, feel free to contact them and pop into their local studio, where they would be delighted to advise how they can assist in the process of creating your new home. Are you facing another winter with Cold, Draughty or Leaking Windows?

D

oes your home have ageing metal windows? If so then the thought of another winter like last year is probably sending shivers down your spine already, not to mention the rising energy costs of trying to keep your home warm. Now is probably the best time to do something about it before the cold weather really hits in the New Year. The Heritage Window Company has been manufacturing and installing slimline aluminium windows for 20 years with innovative concepts to deliver unparalleled performance. The new Heritage Conservation range with its unique ultralow profile frame has been carefully developed to replicate traditional style steel windows, and provide all the benefits

mean they can be customized to almost any requirements, and the tough powder coated finish means they are virtually maintenance free. You can choose from over 200 colours – even opting for different colours inside and out to suit your home’s décor. The Heritage Window Company takes its reputation for quality products and customer service very seriously – the company employs its own team of trained craftsmen and all installations are monitored throughout the contract to ensure the highest quality standards. Proof of just how successful this formula is are the many customer testimonials which can be viewed at their showrooms, and this relentless focus on customer

Slimline aluminium replacement windows save on energy costs and preserve the appearance of your period property of double glazing, without compromising the character of a period home. Heritage Conservation windows not only offer better thermal performance – having achieved an ‘A’ performance rating and a 1.6+ U value – but satisfy all the latest building regulations for replacement or new build applications, and multipoint shootbolt locking provides extra security as well. Managing Director, Sean Ballard says: “One of the great advantages of Heritage windows is that they fit into existing timber subframes which dispenses with the need for redecoration. Should the subframes need replacing, our craftsmen can reproduce new timber frames matching the original profile.” The windows can also be fitted direct-tobrick or stone. Many customers have a specific idea of what they want, so all Heritage windows are bespoke and made to order in its London factory. A range of styles and glazing options 7 0 JANUARY 2 0 1 6

satisfaction and quality product has clearly paid off. “We get people writing in every week, talking about how pleased they are with their new windows and the care and attention to detail of our fitters. In fact, a large proportion of our business comes from existing customers or referrals, which is encouraging” says Sean. As energy prices continue to rise, the cost of heating your home is only going to increase. Heritage’s energy efficient windows employ a ‘polyamide thermal resin break’ to reduce condensation and argon-filled double-glazed sealed units to ensure more of the heat stays in – helping you keep those heating bills down. The Senior Designer from their Oxshott showroom says: ‘Personally I think defaulting to miniature versions of preferred products can be a mistake, the ergonomics of the room should be the main focal point when choosing the products.’ Quite often a corridor room can give way to a large shower wall to wall at one end, or even doing away with glass altogether in favour of a wet room can allow the basin 7 4 JANUARY 2 0 1 6
