he most astonishing cars ever produced, a line-up of world-famous luxury brands, and one of the UK’s most beautiful historic settings. That’s the very successful recipe for the world-famous Concours of Elegance, which is coming to Hampton Court Palace from 31st August – 2 September. Presented by luxury watchmakers, A. Lange & Söhne, the Concours of Elegance first began at Windsor Castle in 2012, as the only motoring event ever to have been granted access to the secretive and idyllic Quadrant. The 2018 Proms marks a range of events that occurred 100 years ago. Leonard Bernstein, who was born in 1918, was one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. His work as conductor, composer, pianist, and educationalist are explored in depth this season. The sixth annual Food Festival returns to The Heart Shopping Centre in Waltonon- Thames over the weekend of 9th- 10th June 2018. The free 2 day festival will line Nettlefold Walk with over 40 specialist stalls offering a variety of local, regional and international produce and freshly prepared dishes. It’s the seventh year of The Garden Show at Loseley Park in July 2018. The perfect event to find all you need to enhance your home, help your garden grow and give all the family a great day out.

Griff Rhys Jones Where was I?
Find out more about Griff Rhys Jones, Where Was I? show taking place at Guildford’s G Live on Thursday 12 July.
W
here was I? will feature Griff ’s personal jaunts, from sailing a boat to St Petersburg and around the Med, to travelling to Morocco, the Galapagos, India and Australia. He has wandered from The Torres Straight Islands to Mali, from Moscow to Dar Es Salam, ridden ‘the train of death’, jumped from a burning boat in the Galapagos, sat with tribal elders and been ordered off their island. He has unwillingly climbed up mountains and abseiled down waterfalls, gone window cleaning on New York skyscrapers without a safety rope and clambered through Manchester’s most demanding sewers. And all without the help of Bear Grylls! But mostly he has ventured to make great TV about his travels, including Greatest Cities, A Slow Train to Africa, In Search of the Black Rhino, Burma and The Forgotten Army, several series of Three Men In A Boat and programmes on mountains, rivers, lost routes and tribal art. Where Was I? will look behind those ‘making of ’ snippets for the real truth about TV travel. He will be telling plenty of funny stories but also musing on the nature of travel itself - about the differences between travel and tourism. Why do we go? What are we searching for? What do you need to pack? Why does television demand jeopardy, incident and immersion? And what exactly does that mean for your sanity? It’s the truth about making travel television. And the truth about wanderlust, the point of looking at ruins and why older people are taking gap years. Every aspect will be under consideration. There’s something for everyone – even the armchair traveller! 1 8 J U LY 2 0 1 8
It can’t be a bad job travelling the world on camera… It really is the greatest gig. The only issue is Michael Palin, he took over the world, so when I say, “I want to go there.”, producers reply, “Palin has already been.” So I thought of a new angle which would allow us to go to places Palin had already been. The new buzz word became ‘Jeopardy’ and the game was ‘Scare the **** out of Griff ’ and they have since thrown me off mountains! You’re a comedian, writer, actor, presenter, TV production founder and now explorer, thats a lot of strings to your bow! So many strings it’s difficult to fire my bow! I’m not trying to impress though. Where was I? is for anybody and everybody, it addresses the major things like youthful freedom and then suddenly finding yourself having kids and then they leave home. This show is all about forgetting your taxes and your daughter’s dog and going travelling – you can ask questions too. Do you still race in regattas? I do and I really enjoy it but I’m no good at it. It’s a glam arena but I own an old wooden boat – we can’t beat the billionaires. You have been to many countries what is your favourite and why? I’m a fond Brit. Young people are fast to jump on a plane, I would say don’t forget The Lakes, the Scottish Highlands and Somerset… There are so many beautiful places in Britain. That said, I long to go to Japan but my favourite place is Finland; the south coast has 80,000 islands – extraordinary. What is the funniest thing that has happened on your travels? We had a crazy time in Morocco. It was the 1980s and myself and my wife had walked about 100 yards when we were stopped by a man who wanted to show us around. We said no and he started following us, swearing, when at the next 100 yards we met another man who wanted to be our guide. Again, we said no, so he joined the swearing group. Crazy Morocco! What is the scariest thing that has ever happened during your travels? Every Wednesday during rush hour in Paris they stop the traffic so people can inline skate around the monuments. We were filming so I decided that
“This show is all about forgetting your taxes and your daughter’s dog and going travelling – you can ask questions too”
I would try on the Friday. Let’s just say traffic didn’t stop and I wobbled along, hoping I lived! The question everyone wants to know the answer to is what is the best way to pack a suitcase – fold or roll? Everything of mine is in containers; socks, electricals... So it doesn’t answer your question but come along to my show and I will tell you how to get an upgrade! What is your message to anyone that hasn’t yet got tickets to your show? Come along! We had a hoot the last time I was in Guildford. I promise it’s a funny show. Tickets£22, book on 01483 369350 (Monday – Saturday, 10am-6pm) or at www.GLive.co.uk

Experience the sights, sounds and smells of Henry VIII’s Kitchens Until 2 September 2018
H
enry VIII’s Kitchens at Hampton Court Palace were the largest of Tudor England. 200 cooks, sergeants, grooms and pages worked to produce over 800 meals a day for the hungry household of Henry VIII. Feeding the court was a complex business all done without modern conveniences as 1.3 million logs burned in the hellish fires every year. From boiling cauldrons to roasting spits, join the day-today grind of Henry’s cooks as you pass through this labyrinth of kitchen spaces. This summer, immerse yourself in a living Tudor world as we introduce you to the staff that fed Henry’s courtiers and guests during the tumultuous events of 1538. Find out how kitchens staff including John Edlyn the purveyor, William Chester the yeoman butcher and John Dale master cook for the household worked to produce food fit for the King. Enjoy the smells of ingredients sourced from across the globe to dazzle the King and his court, and see how they were transformed into complete dishes by a skilled team of cooks; there is even a chance to lend a hand turning the spit! Between their construction in 1530 and the royal family’s last visit to Hampton Court Palace in 1737, the kitchens were a central part of palace life.
2 0 J U LY 2 0 1 8
The Tudor kitchens were divided into a number of departments, each controlled by a Sergeant and a team of yeoman and grooms. The Kitchen department where meat was roasted was under the control of three Master Cooks, one for the King, the Queen and the rest of the Court. These staff toiled under a complex set of rules determining which of the 1,200-odd members of Henry’s court qualified for meals as part of their pay. Working in the kitchens could be a sweaty and dirty job. Henry VIII had to order the scullions to stop going about ‘naked, or in garments of such vileness as they do now, nor lie in the nights and days in the kitchen or ground by the fireside’. A Spanish visitor to the Tudor court in 1554 said the kitchens were ‘veritable hells, such is the stir and bustle in them... there is plenty of beer here, and they drink more than would fill the Valladolid river.’ Henry VIII’s kitchens continued to be used for a further two hundred years, feeding the tables of Tudor, Stuart and Georgian monarchs and their many courtiers. From now until 2 September, immerse yourself in Henry VIII’s world during a season of Tudor cooking, events and talks. Book online to save 15%. hrp.org.uk

The Iberian Performance Show at Merrist Wood A Fascinating Insight into the World of the Iberian Horse!
I
f you visit Merrist Wood Arena in Worplesdon one weekend in August, you may think you have walked straight into a village in the Iberian Peninsula. On 17th – 19th August, the huge indoor arena at Merrist Wood will host a horse show that attracts over 100 Spanish and Portuguese horses – stallions, mares and geldings . It will be an extravaganza of the beautiful and majestic Andalusian horses from Spain, and the lighter built, yet supremely athletic, Lusitano horses from neighbouring Portugal. These two breeds represent the original war horse in Greek and Roman times. They are strongly built, compact and elegant. They have a special character which combines intelligence, sensitivity and docility. Often used in film work, they are at their best when they are performing in close proximity to the public – nothing fazes them! The Iberian Performance Show (www.iberianperformanceshow.co.uk) is now in its 6th year and has rapidly grown into one of the largest events for Iberian horses in the UK. Riders and horses from all parts of Great Britain come

There are good facilities for the disabled. The highlight of the weekend is the Saturday Gala Evening on 18th August (5.30pm – 9pm). This is an evening of non-stop entertainment with mini-equine demos, elegant dressage to music, and spectacular displays in traditional costume. Iberian Performance Show Director Sherene Rahmatallah says: “Having been responsible for bringing several top equestrian displays from Spain and Portugal to the London International Horse Show, Olympia and Royal Windsor Horse Show, I am delighted to say the Gala Evening at the Iberian Performance Show represents a truly authentic equine fiesta in the heart of Guildford.” Food will be available all weekend courtesy of the Merrist Wood catering team, and spectators will be able to enjoy an excellent selection of great Portuguese wines, supplied by Trotton Estate Vineyards. GIGGLING SQUID Founder Pranee Laurillard shares her recipe for this signature dish
salt & pepper squid (serves 2) Ingredients: Squid seasoning: • White pepper powder – ½ tsp • Sugar – ½ tbsp • Salt – ½ tsp • Chicken powder (Knorr) – ½ tbsp Mix together and sprinkle over the squid once fried to season it well Batter: • Self-raising flour – 100g • Water – 300ml • Salt – a pinch • Sugar – a pinch • Vegetable oil – 1 tsp Make nice and fluffy batter with above ingredients Squid: • 500ml vegetable/groundnut oil (to come about 1cm / ½ inch up in a frying pan) • 500g fresh squid, sliced or cut into rings (ask your fishmonger to prepare it for you) • 2 tbsp self-raising flour • 1 tbsp sliced red chilli (remove the seeds if you don’t like heat) • 1 tbsp sliced spring onion • Sriracha sauce
How to cook?
This is surprisingly easy to make. Prep the squid seasoning first, then the batter before starting on your squid! Step 1 Place all the squid seasoning ingredients into a bowl and mix. Easy! Set to one side. Step 2 To create the batter, just mix the flour, salt & sugar in a large bowl. Pour over the water & vegetable oil. Mix again and set aside. Step 3 Now to get started on your squid! 1. Put the oil in a frying pan over a high heat. 2. Cover the squid in the batter and then roll in the flour. When the oil is hot (not quite smoking but almost) carefully place in the hot oil and cook until golden. Approx. 3 mins. 3. Once cooked, place the battered squid into a mixing bowl lined with a paper towel & leave to sit for 1 min. 4. Add the squid seasoning, sliced red chilli and sliced spring onion. Toss together and serve. Enjoy with a glass of Riesling. Lovely. www.gigglingsquid.com

Yet the landscape is also home to a variety of habitats, including riverside walks along the Thames and gloriously wide open meadows. These meadows were the original source of Runnymede’s name, which comes from the Anglo-Saxon ‘Runemede’, meaning ‘meeting meadow’. Runnymede’s meadows are a fundamental feature of the landscape, providing habitats for countless species of animals, insects and wildflowers. Once a feature of every parish in Surrey, meadows are now an increasingly fragile part of our national heritage. Beyond being a quintessential sight of summer, their value to our wildlife cannot be overstated. A single healthy meadow can be home to over eighty species of wild flowers, such as clovers, buttercups, 2 8 J U LY 2 0 1 8
birdsfoot trefoil, oxeye daisies, knapweeds and scabious, all of which can be found at Runnymede. This is compared to most modern agricultural pasture which typically supports under a dozen species. During the summer months, wildflowers and grasses are allowed to grow in abundance in the meadows, creating a haze of golden colour, but most importantly, a vital habitat for insects and wildlife. Historically, meadows supported a way of life that had gone on for centuries. They provided grazing and hay for livestock, employment, food and medicine for the parish and were part of a community’s cultural and social history. Today, just 3% of the meadows that existed in the 1930’s remain which is a loss of 7.5 million acres of wild flower grassland. We take care of the meadows at Runnymede in much the same traditional fashion, with the aim of protecting this special habitat. National Meadows Day is the perfect way to explore and enjoy the flowers and wildlife of Runnymede’s magnificent meadows and understand their special place in our shared social and cultural history. Join our celebrations on Sunday 8 July with ranger led children’s activities from 10.30am4pm and a free guided meadows walk at 11.30am. Visitors are invited to help us plant new wildflowers for the bees by making seed bombs, an activity suitable for all ages. Ranger Laura Summerbell will be on hand to answer questions and you can also help us to collect a record of the plant species at Runnymede. To join in, head to the gazebo in the main meadow which you will be able to spot from the car park. Supporting events such as these helps us to preserve this unique habitat for ever, for everyone. www.nationaltrust.org.uk

winning combination of shopping and cars comes to Brooklands Museum on Sunday 22nd July as their annual Classic Car Show & Jumble surrounds the historic Clubhouse. What better setting to browse about a hundred trade stalls housed in and around the race bays where such greats as Sir Malcolm Campbell and John Cobb fettled their racing cars ready to head out on to the famous Brooklands banked track. Today it becomes a bustling shopping village full of items relevant to the Brooklands era. There is an emphasis on the golden days of motoring with art prints, paintings and photos of that halcyon pre-war era. There will not only be many models, badges and motoring memorabilia to be found as you browse the stalls but there will also be vintage and retro items including clothing and items stretching from the Brooklands heyday to the 1970s. Organiser Tim Morris says “We never really know what is going to turn up, it could be anything from a Dansette record player to a complete Alvis Leonides helicopter engine that turned up on the back of a lorry last year”. The event has been running for over ten years and has developed from its early days as a purely auto and aero jumble, where owners of old cars and planes could rummage for those elusive bits for their cherished vehicles, to more general gift related stalls but all with that special Brooklands touch.
“There will not only be many models, badges and motoring memorabilia to be found as you browse the stalls but there will also be vintage and retro items including clothing” The show is organised by the Museum’s support group the Brooklands Trust Members and is designed to show off the wide range of interests that their members have, from vintage classics to the more modern supercars, but the show is also open to the general public. Classic cars and motorbikes will fill up the recently re-opened Finishing Straight with a dazzling display of gleaming chrome and 3 4 J U LY 2 0 1 8

Special focus this year is being given to modified hot rods and custom cars and selected owners will bring their cars in to an arena to talk about their pride and joys. The focus on the US continues with more live music from Stu Edwards and Gone Country playing all the country hits as well as a resident Ukulele group, “The NewMugs”, who will be popping up around the Museum site. Judges will be viewing all the entrants and trophies will be awarded to the best cars in the show as well as the best car club and an overall winner, in 2017 that honour went to a beautiful blue Vauxhall Victor belonging to Tracy Holmes from Bow in London. Once you’ve been exhausted by all the shopping you will be able to relax at the barbecue or café or wander around the Museum exhibits themselves including the award-winning Aircraft Factory and Flight Shed and the supersonic Concorde. The youngsters will be catered for as well with a radio-controlled car challenge and other side shows making this the ideal event for all the family.

Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 Sunday 29 July 2018

eveloped by the Mayor of London and his agencies in 2013, Prudential RideLondon is the world’s greatest festival of cycling. The sixth edition will take place over the weekend of 28-29 July 2018. There is no other closed-road event like it that combines the fun and accessible element of a free family ride in central London with the excitement of watching the world’s best professional cyclists race in the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 Classic. Taking a cue from the London Marathon, amateur cyclists also participate in the 100mile challenge on the same closed roads as the professionals, with the added incentive of raising money for charity. The route offers a perfect, traffic-free ride for a range of cycling abilities. Everyone can enjoy a challenging day in the saddle pedalling through the hustle and bustle of London then the peaceful country roads of Surrey. With leg-testing climbs and a route made famous by the world’s best cyclists at the London 2012 Olympics, it’s a truly spectacular event for all involved. Starting from Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, cyclists head past Canary Wharf and through the City of London before cycling west along Piccadilly and the A4 at Hammersmith. Riders first cross the River Thames at Chiswick and pass through
3 6 J U LY 2 0 1 8
Richmond Park and the heart of Kingston-uponThames, before crossing Hampton Court Bridge along the route made famous by both the road race and time-trial events during the London 2012 Olympic Games. There’s plenty of stunning Surrey countryside on offer as cyclists head south past Newlands Corner, Abinger Hammer and Holmbury St Mary before tackling the biggest ascent on the route at Leith Hill. After a well-earned descent towards Dorking, it’s onto the next challenge: the world-famous zig-zags of Box Hill. After heading north through Leatherhead, Oxshott and Esher the route takes riders back into London through Kingston and over Putney Bridge to cross the River Thames for a final time. The route then follows the Embankment all the way alongside the Thames, heading past some of London’s most famous landmarks as it makes its way across Parliament Square and up Whitehall. The route then swings left at Trafalgar Square, with riders streaming under Admiralty Arch before a spectacular finish on The Mall. As well as the personal challenge of completing the route, participants’ involvement also benefit good causes – Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 aims to become the largest charity fundraising cycling event in the world. To capture it all, the best action is broadcast live on TV in the UK and internationally, seen by an audience of millions. After the inaugural event in 2013, the vision for Prudential RideLondon to be one of the world’s leading cycling events and a lasting legacy of the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games….. has become reality. Private schools
should be praised for producing influential people
C
A study by Debrett’s, the etiquette experts, reveals that two-fifths of the 500 most powerful and influential people in Britain went to private schools
rucially this cuts across all spheres of influence, including not only traditional careers, like business and politics, but areas like architecture and acting too: witness the amazing global success of Eton-educated Eddie Redmayne, still only 33, as Professor Stephen Hawking, in The Theory of Everything. Of course private schools are always going to produce far more than their fair share of Society’s most powerful “players”. This is inevitable, given the fact that most successful people educate their own children privately; thus the system is guaranteed to be perpetuated, with success breeding success. For example, high-flying parents will have all the key contacts, whether in commerce or theatre, to help ensure their own offspring have that first, vital helping hand up the career ladder. Work experience slots inevitably go to the children of top business people or lawyers, for example as inevitably their parents have the contacts to find precious openings. And anyone who has been to a private school, whether big or small, famous or not so famous, will know that there will be many such high-achieving parents. Their added influence opens doors more easily and, crucially,

“Private schools are always going to produce far more than their fair share of Society’s most powerful “players””
other pupils can also benefit from their contacts. For example, successful parents are often instrumental in prompting high-profile acquaintances to visit schools as speakers: spending time with pupils and offering invaluable advice on “How to succeed” in the process. That way, everyone benefits from their expertise. This is indeed how the system works on a termly basis: little nudges here and there, but nothing too blatant or nepotistic. Private schools are exceedingly good at producing successful pupils…

Want to tighten your skin, reduce sagging, wrinkles and fine lines? INTRAcel has stood the test of time.
Dr Peter Forrester has been using INTRAcel skin rejuvenation for over 5 years. During this time he has witnessed the introduction of many other non-surgical skin-tightening treatments. These new treatments are usually well publicised, celebrity-endorsed and expensive. They are often promoted with ‘before & after’ photographs which are rarely achievable in practice. Dr Forrester continues to be impressed with the results of INTRAcel and believes that it offers a better and more cost-effective result than most of the newer ‘trendy’ techniques. INTRAcel cleverly combines the two established techniques of micro-needling and radio-frequency (RF) skin tightening. INTRAcel delivers short bursts of RF energy into the deeper layers of the skin.
INTRAcel can: • improve the tone & texture of skin • reduce wrinkles and fine lines • tighten the jowls and neck • improve acne scars • improve active acne Recovery from an INTRAcel treatment is usually quick. At the end of treatment the skin will be red with a sunburn-like sensation for a few hours. This redness will diminish over the first 1-2 days. A toned and tightened effect will be noticeable immediately after a treatment but the full effects will develop over subsequent weeks. Although you should notice an improvement after the first treatment, a course of 3 treatments at 4-6 week intervals may be recommended. Following this, improvements will continue to develop for up to 6 months as new, healthy collagen develops.

A history of the
bikini
The bikini. While it’s a holiday essential now, life hasn’t always been so simple for the humble two-piece. In fact, it’s got quite the history. What started off as the ultimate in scandalous dressing was slowly accepted, at first by Europe and eventually across the pond in the US too, eventually ending up the beachfront fixture that it is today.
6 0 J U LY 2 0 1 8
I
n 1913, 13 years after women were first allowed to compete in the Olympics, the first two-piece bathing costume was designed in a bid to improve performance. It was basically just a tight vest and shorts, but eyebrows were still raised due to the previously unseen tight fit. During the 1930s and 1940s in Europe, fabric rationing means that women started to wear a split bathing suit. Film stars including Ava Gardner, Rita Hayworth, and Lana Turner were all wearing the two-piece, and it was seen frequently on American beaches. However, showing the belly button was still unchartered territory! On July 5 1946, the bikini as we know it today was born. Inspired by seeing women in St Tropez rolling up their swimsuits to get a better tan, engineer Louis Réard designed the first bikini. He named his design ‘bikini’ after Bikini Atoll, where post-war testing on the atomic bomb was happening. His reasoning? Réard hoped that his invention would be as explosive as the testing was. It certainly was and initially, no models would wear his design – it was the first garment to ever expose the belly button and this was considered seriously scandalous. The two piece was banned from the 1951 London Miss World Competition as the one-piece still reigned supreme. The bikini was later also banned in Belgium, Italy, Spain and
Australia, and was declared sinful by the Vatican. In 1959, Kirk Douglas was spotted frolicking on the beach in Cannes with actress Bridgette Bardot who had boldly chosen a bikini as her beachwear. Bardot was seen from that moment as part responsible for popularising the bikini. However, America still wasn’t keen and Anne Cole, a US swimsuit designer, said about a Bardot bikini, “It’s nothing more than a G-string. It’s at the razor’s edge of decency.” Also in 1959, the mayor of Benidorm convinced Spain’s General Franco to legalise the bikini to draw more tourists to the town – he agreed and Benidorm joins Cannes as key in popularising the bikini. Marilyn Monroe confirmed the trend, appearing in a bikini in a number of photoshoots during the 1950s. Despite the National Legion of Decency pressuring Hollywood to keep bikinis from being featured in Hollywood movies, bikini history was made in 1962 when Ursela Andress emerged from the sea playing Honey Rider in the James Bond film Dr. No. Also in the 1960s the bikini made it’s Playboy debut but early American bikinis tried to cover up the belly button and when modelled in magazines, the belly button was airbrushed out. Seriously. In 1964, America finally buckled and Sports Illustrated featured Berlin-born fashion model Babette March on the cover wearing a white bikini. For better or for worse, we’ve come a long way since the bathing dress and, for that, most women are thankful.

C u rt a i n s U p You can instantly enhance or update a room by adding the right curtains, bringing the whole room together and creating a finished look. Deciding on the right curtains can make a dramatic difference to both the appearance and feel of a room
B
efore deciding on a particular type of curtain it’s worthwhile considering what you are trying to achieve in the room. Are you looking for practicality, a brand new style for your room or maybe a little of both? Are you trying to keep a room cosy in the evenings or shading a child’s bedroom from early morning sunshine? Deciding on your room’s requirements from the beginning will help you make the right product choice - ensuring you get the most from your window furnishing. Do you want the window dressing to be the focus of the room by injecting colour? Or do you need the solution to be more neutral so you can change your furniture without having to replace the curtains? Looking at the appearance and size of your window is a great way to decide on the most suitable type curtain.
CURTAINS ARE GREAT FOR… Decorative flair - sumptuous full-length curtains made from one of a range of luxurious fabrics adds the finishing touch to furnishing any room. Protecting upholstery - voiles and curtains act as a great way to protect soft furnishings from exposure to direct sunlight, helping minimise the risk of sun fade on delicate materials. Keeping the room warm - drawing curtains can help eliminate draughts and wasted heat, helping to reducing fuel costs and being more energy efficient. There are a variety of curtain headings to choose from, depending on the décor, theme and type of window in your home - pencil pleat curtains, tab top curtains, chrome ring top and slot top. You could also add in drapes for a more dramatic look, ideal for larger rooms.
LINED OR UNLINED? Which are best for you? Again you need to decide 7 6 J U LY 2 0 1 8
the needs of every room and window. Lined curtains are great for: • Insulation - closed curtains help keep out draughts whilst trapping heat in the room. • Protection - lined curtains give an added level of resistance against strong sunlight that may contribute to material deterioration over time. • Hanging - lined curtains add extra wei6ght - which allows them to hang better. Unlined curtains are great for: • Low maintenance - unlined curtains can be washed at home with no need for dry cleaning. • Keeping a room cool - underlined curtains allow air to pass through easily - ideal for keeping temperatures lower in the summer. • Achieving a lighter look - unlined curtains allow more light into the room giving a lighter look that works best in smaller spaces.
CARING FOR YOUR CURTAINS Remember to remove all curtain accessories such as holdbacks and hooks before cleaning your curtains. Avoid machine washing curtains at high temperatures or for longer than necessary. Lined curtains need to be dry cleaned. Voiles should be hand washed in lukewarm water and left to drip dry.

A perfect partnership In April this year, Katherine Richards was invited to take up partnership with Hertog, the renowned, top quality wood floor manufacturer from the Netherlands, specialising in handcrafted aged wooden flooring. They recently took up residence at the Clerkenwell Workshops in London and felt that Katherine’s rugs would be the perfect complement to their beautiful range of flooring. Ben Sheppard of Hertog said ‘I love Katherine’s rug designs - they add a fantastic splash of colour to what might be an otherwise oakey world!’

atherine has been designing rugs as part of the service she offers in her interior design business for several years. She currently has six ranges which are made to a variety of sizes and can be viewed on her website, www.katherinerichardsrugs.com In addition, she creates bespoke pieces which are tailored perfectly to her client’s discerning tastes. “It’s a thrill to design such special pieces, knowing they will remain in my client’s homes for years to come. They are really floor art. I used to paint a lot but this is much more fun!” The rugs are hand woven in India by fourth generation weavers whom Katherine met personally when she travelled there in search of the best people to bring her designs to reality. ‘They are a small family business, meticulously caring very much about the work they produce’, she explains ‘I am committed to having my rugs made ethically so I became a GoodWeave partner early on. This means that every rug made is issued with an individual number which is my client’s guarantee that no children were involved in the manufacture process and that we are closer to ending child labour, forced labour, and bonded labour in global supply chains’ With each rug sold a percentage of the profit is paid to GoodWeave meaning every purchase will support a program that provides a sound education for the children and ensures decent working conditions for adults. With all this in mind, Katherine Richards’ move to London with her rugs is exciting and well deserved, with prospective clients already at her door. The Clerkenwell Workshops are a stunning converted clock factory right in the centre of the Clerkenwell design district only 5 minutes from Farringdon station. There is a great on-site restaurant- a lovely place to drink and chat whilst discussing your flooring in a convivial and relaxed environment. www.katherinerichardsrugs.com

Arts and Crafts with an Eastern Twist in Hampstead
“The house was also brought up to date with state of the art technology for lighting, security and audio-visual systems, allowing the right ambience for every occasion – a priority for this family who loves to entertain”
I
n the leafy North London suburb of Hampstead, a Grade II listed home hides a fabulous secret. Seeing this historical property from the outside, you would be forgiven for thinking that today it is just another functional family home. However, step inside and you discover the many surprising décor delights that this threestory building has to offer. Twentieth-century arts and crafts period features intertwine with exotic Indian influences here to create an eastern meets modern atmosphere, making the interior of this Heath Drive home a true wonder to explore. The Heath Drive project is the work of esteemed London interior design studio Callender Howorth, who spent a year and a half restoring and updating this Arts and Crafts house that was built in 1905 and separated into three apartments in the 1970s. The project focused on recreating the building’s period features with a modern twist, whilst taking influence from eastern architecture such as the Taj Mahal. Callender Howorth’s expert design and styling team commissioned Indian-style fretwork for the property, while key vintage pieces were sourced directly from India. Two paintings from the renowned Indian artist Sakti Burman were mounted in the drawing room, and eastern murals

and mosaics were incorporated into alcoves. The delicate colour palette of the Taj Mahal was used throughout the home, bringing all these details together in perfect harmony. To modernise, the designers enhanced the building’s natural light. In particular, views out to the garden were improved, meaning this glorious outdoor oasis was finally given the recognition it deserves. The house was also brought up to date with state of the art technology for lighting, security and audio-visual systems, allowing the right ambience for every occasion – a priority for this family who loves to entertain. To top this off, a custom-designed wine room was installed by the kitchen to house an impressive fine wine collection, meaning a chilled bottle of vintage Champagne is always ready to be opened for the next celebration. Mark Howorth is Callender Howorth’s founder and an award-winning designer. Discussing the creative synthesis required for such an important building, he says: “The project involved a complete remodeling of the house to create a stunning contemporary family home whilst being sensitive to the architectural history of the house and its Grade II listed building status.” As challenging as the task may have been, one thing is certain: the flawless result. “As the images of the completed project bear testament to, the resulting look is a perfect balance of contemporary design - with an Indian influence,” Howorth continues. This is a home that will continue to surprise and delight its visitors – and its residents for years to come. www.callenderhoworth.com

Why you should attract butterflies & bees to your garden Most people like seeing butterflies and bees, but do you know why it’s important to attract them to your garden?
A
s they move from flower to flower they pollinate garden and wild flowers, enabling plants to reproduce. As well as helping flowers to pollinate, they provide population control for a number of plant and insect species by eating them, and they provide a food source for other animals. Butterflies and bees also make the world a little more colourful. Their presence, or absence, can tell us a lot about the local environment. According to the British Bee Keepers Association about one third of the food we eat would not be available but for bees. In a recent survey* by Squire’s Garden Centres 70% of people said they would like to encourage more butterflies and bees into their garden, so here are some suggestions to help attract them to your garden.
Create A Butterfly & Bee Friendly Garden • Plant vibrant and colourful plants Butterflies and bees will visit any garden, however small, if they can feed from suitable nectar-rich plants. Squire’s recommend that you plant plenty of pink and purple plants, which are colours loved by our winged friends. Try Buddleia, Verbena, Lavender or Marjoram. • Give them warmth and shelter Butterflies and bees both like warmth, so choose sunny sheltered spots to place your plants. Give bees shelter by letting your grass grow various lengths to suit different bees. Place a butterfly house and nectar feeders in a quiet sunny spot. • Give them a drink Provide water for them in your garden. It could be a pond, a birdbath, or simply a shallow dish filled with water - but make sure to add a few stones or marbles to provide a surface for them to drink from, as they can drown in water bowls. • Help a tired bee Add two spoons of sugar to one spoon of water, and leave the spoon in front of a tired bee. Once it’s eaten it will be revived. • Help a tired butterfly Make a warm resting place by laying a few flat 9 2 J U LY 2 0 1 8
stones in a sunny part of the garden that’s sheltered from the wind.

REASONS TO INVEST IN A QUALITY BATHROOM SUITE Designed and installed by experts 1 A fabulous bathroom adds value to your property Due to the relative permanence of a bathroom installation (fixing of tiles, plumbing arrangements etc), it is important to take your time and plan to achieve a quality finish. At worst, a poorly composed installation or unfashionable bathroom suite choice can put off would-be buyers, thereby reducing sale value of your property. At best, a high quality bathroom suite can improve the value of your home, potentially adding more to its overall value than you spent on the products and installation. Hence, this is one instance when it pays to spend a little extra on good quality, branding and design. 2 Better design Unless you are a bathroom expert, or experienced in renovations, replacing your bathroom suite is likely to involve replacing existing pieces, in current positions. It doesn’t necessarily have to be this way though. In some instances changing the layout of a bathroom is unnecessary, or impossible, but seeking the guidance of a specialist will help confirm that, or open your eyes to other possibilities. If an existing layout isn’t working for your family,
a bathroom design service can provide inspiring and practical solutions for using even the smallest of spaces in an attractive and efficient way. A designer will listen to your needs and provide you with concepts and visuals that provide that extra confidence when purchasing. 3 Safety Most bathroom installations include elements of electrical works (lighting, mirrored cabinets, shaver sockets, underfloor heating etc), and all include plumbing works, of course. These tasks, along with potentially complex tiling, should all be undertaken by qualified and experienced tradespeople. To correct poor workmanship at a later date can be disproportionately costly and most certainly disruptive. In the case of shoddy plumbing, leaks can cause hugely expensive damage and incorrect electrical installations can be potentially life threatening. 4 Buy cheap buy twice Cutting corners and costs initially is almost certainly not going to cut costs in the long term. It stands to reason that the cheapest bath tubs, shower trays and brassware on sale in the UK are also the least costly to produce. This often means unidentifiable branding (which leads to difficulty obtaining spare parts in years to come), poor quality china surfaces, poorly engineered valves, substandard plating and so forth. Given that labour costs in bathroom installations equal or exceed material costs, failing to invest in superior, well-functioning and durable products will only lead to repeat labour costs to repair and exchange items earlier than necessary. 5 Finishing touches shouldn’t be missed Never underestimate the impact and power of beautiful accessories such as mirrors and towel rails, the effect of a layered lighting scheme, a water softener to keep your metal and china surfaces shiny and new looking and in good working order and the final small details such as fluffy and luxurious towels. All these elements combine to finish your bathroom, giving it the style and feel of an indulgent hotel experience – a wonderful place to relax in your home. A professional bathroom expert will remind you of these finishing details, to ensure everything is considered during the bathroom creation process.

W ith over 50 years combined experience in the conservatory business, the directors of iCon Roofs know a thing or two about temperature differences and how to solve the problems many people experience. They pride themselves on carrying out conservatory and building work to the highest standard with all work undertaken by fully trained staff, giving you total peace of mind. They also promise to give potential customers a free, no obligation quotation along with no-nonsense conservatory roofing and insulated ceiling advice. An iCon replacement conservatory roof is solid, thermally efficient with an outstanding low “U Value”, delivering astonishing results, keeping conservatories much cooler in the summer and much, much warmer in the winter. The standard polycarbonate or glass roof system found in almost all UK conservatories has virtually no insulating properties, even if roof blinds are installed. This means most of the sun’s heat is conducted in the summer, making the room unpleasantly hot for everyday use. Conversely, in the winter months, it can be impossible to keep most conservatories warm, because the same lack of insulation allows most of the heat to quickly escape. iCon Roofs can either install a new highly insulated lightweight complete replacement roof or refurbish your existing that will reduce the level
