His easy charm in front of the press is legendary and he won the 2012 BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award (voted for by the public), helping cycling smash its way into the mainstream. 2013 brought further success, including the Tour of Britain title, and in 2014 Wiggins added the rainbow

jersey to his collection by winning the World Time Trial Championships. The Summer of 2016 saw Wiggins win his 5th gold medal at the Rio Olympics in the team pursuit and his eighth Olympic medal overall, making him Britain’s most decorated Olympian ever and rounding off one of the most impressive sporting careers the nation has ever witnessed. Announcing his retirement from professional cycling at the end of 2016, Wiggins said, “2016 is the end of the road for this chapter, onwards and upwards, ‘feet on the ground, head in the clouds’ kids from Kilburn don’t win Olympic Golds and Tour de Frances! They do now.” Wiggins’ latest release, Icons, takes readers on an extraordinarily intimate journey through the sporting world, presenting key pieces from his never-before-seen collection of memorabilia. Bradley will reflect on the icons, races and moments that have fundamentally influenced him on both professional and personal levels. Icons: My Inspiration. My Motivation. Claremont Landscape Garden: Autumn Colour Walk Tuesday 20th November, 11am-12.30pm

n days gone by, Claremont Landscape Garden was the royal retreat of Queen Victoria, providing a sanctuary away from the public eye. These days, the gardens still provide a sense of tranquility for those who visit. During autumn the trees at Claremont transform into a glorious haze of gold and red, lighting up the garden with their vibrant colours. Each tree has its own unique autumn story providing a rich tapestry of leaves. On Tuesday 20th November, visitors will be able to join knowledgeable guide Hilary on a special Autumn Colour guided walk, gaining an insight into the trees which give Claremont its unique character. This will be a chance to discover some late autumn colour, spotting which of the garden’s deciduous trees have still retained their brightly coloured leaves and which have fallen into a crunchy heap on the ground. There’ll be an explanation of how and why leaves change their colour, giving you an insight into this annual process. Whilst autumn colour traditionally refers to leaves, Hilary will also be revealing all of the other wonderful sources of colour during the colder months. Beautiful jewel-like berries cover shrubs and trees throughout the garden, providing much needed food for birds. You may be able to spot the Strawberry Tree with berries still intact; a shrub which produces wonderfully bright strawberry-like berries during autumn. Not all berries are eaten by the birds and so shrubs and trees such as the sea

buckthorn and hawthorn will still be decked out with berries, providing flashes of colour in amongst the browns and golden shades of their leaves and branches. Further colour can be found if you look at the bark on species such as the Japanese cedar and sequoia trees, which add rich browns into the mix and beautiful textures too. Lichen often grows on trees or discarded logs at this time of year, forming delicate patterns reminiscent of frost. You may even spot some fungi tucked away in hidden corners. There’s plenty of green to see around the garden too. Walk through the laurel lawn and you’ll see gloriously shiny green leaves, whilst dark green conifers tower above you with their woody scent and textured cones. This glorious feast for the senses will be brought to life for you by Hilary as you walk through Claremont. The walk lasts for an hour and a half, so sturdy shoes are a must as are warm winter clothes. Once you’ve finished the walk, a stop off in our tea-room for a drink or hot lunch will warm you up in no time. Every penny you spend helps us to protect this beautiful garden for the future. Innovative Pop Art at Windsor Park Hall MVP: London,16th – 18th of November 2018
M
arie Von Papen announces MVP: London, an exhibition of significant international artists, showing together for the first time in the UK. Marie Von Papen, known for staging exhibitions in unusual spaces, brings her renowned artist roster to the unconventional art space of a neo-classical mansion on the outskirts of London. MVP: London is the latest in a series of innovative art pop ups, including a former wharf in Copenhagen, an abandoned shipping warehouse in New York, and a former 1930’s office block in Berlin. MVP: London will consist of 80 new works ranging from sculptures, to large scale paintings to immersive installations.
Artists include: • Ecuadorian painter Pablo Guarderas, whose works are in private and public collections worldwide, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. • Japanese film and installation artist Acci Baba, whose works have been officially selected and exhibited in Contemporary Art institutions and Film Festivals worldwide such as the L.A Film Festival in 2004, the Japan Media Arts Festival in 2010 and is currently showing in Brighton as part of Uncommon Natures at Brighton Digital Festival. • Russian painter Nikolay Koshelev, nominee for the Dedalus Foundation, New York. • French installation artist Brunhilde Groult who has had three solo shows in Berlin and uses traditional techniques such as carving, lacquer art, embroidery and silk printing • Russian painter Konstantin Sotnikov, winner of the Eduard Bargheer Foundation Award. • German Sculptor Robert Elfgen who has had 22 NOVEMBER 2018
solo exhibitions at Spruth Magers, Cologne and London in 2008, the Kunstverien Bonn in 2005, and the Sumultanhalle Cologne in 2003. • German painter Karl-Luis Vossbec who will exhibit his large-scale paintings with Marie Von Papen for the third time. Marie Von Papen says “People are always searching for a new experience. Whether it’s a wharf, a desert or a mansion, I believe you can stage an exhibition anywhere, and a new and unexpected location enables the work to be seen anew each time. Wherever you are, art has the ability to change the atmosphere.” Whereas MVP’s exhibitions normally take place in abandoned or repurposed urban spaces, Windsor Park Hall is a pristine, new build mansion house, positioned within landscaped grounds in Englefield Green, Surrey. It measures circa 29,000 sq ft / 2,700 sq m with three stories being used for the exhibition. Windsor Park Hall represents Marie Von Papen’s first exhibition in the UK. MVP was founded in 2012 in Berlin by Marie von Papen, conceived as a moving gallery concept by holding exhibitions of young international contemporary artists in the USA, Germany, Denmark, Portugal and France. The exhibition will run for one weekend only from Friday 16th to Sunday 18th of November 2018, and will be open to the public on Saturday 16th from 12-6pm. The rest of the weekend will be entry by invitation only and private events. To register interest in the private and collector events, please email rsvp@damsonpr.com. RUSSIAN MASTERPIECES AT G LIVE WITH GSO H
eart-rending melody coupled with fabulous orchestration – what could be a better way to launch the first major concert of the GSO’s Centenary Season, a gala concert of Russian masterpieces on November 24 at G Live. Tchaikovsky’s Pathetique, his final symphony, is the culmination of his genius. It has one of his most sensually romantic tunes, interwoven with episodes of high drama. The quicksilver, shimmering scherzo of the third movement is highly unusual with avant garde experimentalism more reminiscent of the twentieth century, and the finale is heart breaking - a minor key, slow, quiet statement of despair. The same could not be said of Rachmaninov’s third piano concerto, which most certainly ends with a bang, and has a fair few fireworks along the way as well, including one of the most demanding cadenzas in the repertoire. The work is a virtuoso tour-de-force: the film Shine memorably depicted pianist David Helfgott’s breakdown as he tried to tame its fiendish pyrotechnics. Happily Masa Tayama, one of the GSO’s favourite soloists, is

a wonderful exponent of Russian music. When he played this concerto before he was hailed as “reinventing the image of Rachmaninov!” Tayama first performed with the GSO in 2014. He was one of the rising stars showcased by the GSO as part of its ethos of supporting young musicians. He played Tchaikovsky’s Second Piano Concerto and produced such a flamboyant and musical performance that he was promptly invited back to play Tchaikovsky’s much loved First Piano Concerto in 2016. Since then Tayama has won an enviable reputation as a Rachmaninov specialist and is currently in the midst of a project to record Rachmaninov’s complete works for solo piano. Kicking the evening off, the riotous Festive Overture catches the normally sardonic Shostakovich at his most exuberant and playful. If you missed Masa Tayama on those previous occasions, put November 24th in your diary. The concert promises to be fantastically exciting. It starts at 7.30pm. It’s an unconventional and very authentic place, where modern metal artworks sit comfortably in the highly visual surroundings of a working forge, an award-winning wildlife garden and an intriguing historic house. To add to the drama, the M25 winds its noisy way through, splitting the whole place in two. Owner Lucy Quinnell has spent three decades researching the grounds and buildings, and she describes the setting as “the gift that keeps on giving”. “It’s a remarkable place, and the story grows daily. The house is striking, but there is something odd about its squat, square shape and the way it sits low in the ground, and people comment on this. My business is about our aesthetic use of metals, but I have a passion for history and ecology and it became clear to me years ago that the landscape here has secrets to reveal.” As well as harbouring numerous endangered species of flora and fauna, the strangely-shaped land around the ironworks contains clues to mysteries Lucy is determined to solve. In 2017, she was rewarded with finds of Deverel-Rimbury pottery from the British Bronze Age, to add to her growing collection of archaeological evidence. A pre-Roman gold coin and sherds of Roman pottery have come to light, and Lucy now has welcome help from Surrey Archaeological Society. 800s, and the lost royal centre is associated with the northern part of the modern town, where Fire & Iron Gallery stands on a ridge between two streams. There is also a missing minster church in the vicinity, listed in Domesday Book as ‘the church of Leret’. Rowhurst house has three sections: pre-1346, 1346 and 1632. It is the pre-1346 square flint section that is now the focus of Lucy’s attention. Experts agree with her instinctive feel that this was not originally a home; the mighty flint walls suggest defendability, and the building sits so deep in the London Clay that the word ‘tower’ is now being used to describe it. A gatehouse is mentioned in local medieval records, as is a prison, a courthouse and two manorial dovecotes. The Norman nobleman who built Baynard’s Castle in London (close to where St. Paul’s Cathedral now stands) made his home in this part of Leatherhead, as did the man who was key in building Conwy, Beaumaris and Caernarfon Castles. What happened to all these recorded buildings and homes, along with the missing Anglo-Saxon church? Is the oldest part of Rowhurst one of them? Time will tell… Fire & Iron Gallery, Rowhurst Forge, Oxshott Road, Leatherhead, Surrey KT22 0EN www.fireandiron.co.uk Open Tuesday to Saturday 10am-5pm

Civil partnerships a step in the right direction? Heather Jarrold-Taylor is a solicitor at K J Smith Solicitors. Heather has a passion for family law and is dedicated to supporting her clients with an empathetic and professional approach. She is determined to make her clients feel at ease throughout the most difficult of times.
A
s you may have recently read, Rebecca Steinfeld and Charles Keidan were successful in their recent Supreme Court case in their campaign for civil partnerships to be open to heterosexual couples. In some countries and states, such as the Netherlands, Hawaii and South Africa, civil partnerships have been available for many years for heterosexual couples. In light of this, last week the government announced that heterosexual couples, residing in England and Wales, will have the right to enter into civil partnerships (a unification previously restricted to same sex couples). The Civil Partnership Act 2004 created civil partnerships, enabling same sex couples to formalise their relationship and acquire rights comparable to those held by married heterosexual couples. The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act, which came into force in 2014, allowed same sex couples to get married or convert their civil partnership into a marriage. As a result, same sex couples had the option of either marriage or a civil partnership, whilst heterosexual couples only had the option of marriage. There are numerous reasons why heterosexual couples want the right to enter into a civil partnership rather than marriage. For example, entering into a civil partnership will allow couples greater protection in their relationship without having to embark on the traditional route of marriage, which some perceive to be outdated and patriarchal. As such, this recent news has given 44 NOVEMBER 2018
heterosexual couples the ability to acquire rights in their relationship, without the only option being marriage to do so. The change in the law may also assist couples that are currently cohabitating and do not want to marry, but believe they are protected under ‘common law marriage’. Unfortunately, though this term is regularly used, it does not provide unmarried couples who are cohabiting any form of protection or rights in their relationships. Therefore, to gain protection, the options available to cohabitees are either through marriage or a cohabitation agreement. However, moving forward, cohabitees will now have a third option of entering into a civil partnership to gain rights and security in their relationship. Yet this still leaves a grey area for those who cohabit but do not wish to enter into either a civil partnership or a marriage as there remains a gap in legal protection, rights and security for them. Although the change seems to be a step in the right direction and has diminished the discrimination between heterosexual and same sex couples being able to enter into a civil partnership, there is still a gap in the law in relation to cohabiting couples and their protection. Also, at present, there is no time scale in place as to when the change in legislation will occur to allow heterosexual couples to enter into a civil partnership. Therefore, until a timescale is produced and the rights of cohabiting couples are addressed, it is, unfortunately, a waiting game.

EDUC ATION
Step into the most exciting school in England “We have had four children through the public school system and I think that Hurtwood House is the only one which has really delivered what it promised”
A
lthough it has all the facilities of a typical public school, Hurtwood House specialises exclusively in the sixth form and the age range 16-18. Changing schools at 16 opens up a whole new world of fresh experiences and challenges and provides the perfect steppingstone between school and university. Hurtwood House is young, exciting and dynamic and, most importantly of all, it is exceptionally creative with drama, media, art, textiles, dance, music and singing to die for. Famous former students include Oscar-winner Hans Zimmer (music for Gladiator, Rain Main, Lion King) and Golden Globe winner Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada, Gideon’s Daughter) and watch out for Hollywood hot-tip Jack Huston (Factory Girl). Zara Brownless (winner of the first Young Apprentice). But marvellous as the performing and creative arts are, this school is definitely not a one-trick pony. It also caters for the budding entrepreneur, doctor, lawyer, architect, etc etc etc with a range of subjects which, though less eyecatching, are no less successful and inspirational. Small wonder, then, that the world is beating a path to Hurtwood’s door, and one of the first things to strike visitors is that it has a completely different “campus” feel about it – not like school at all. That’s because there are no juniors – everybody here is 16+ and they all join after they have taken their GCSE’s. In many ways, it defies definition - more public school than sixth form college, but smaller and less institutional – more boutique than department store. At the moment it’s in a class of its own but one suspects that one day soon there will be more schools like this, because five years is a long time 48 NOVEMBER 2018
to be in one public school, and so many boys and girls are now ready at 16 for a fresh challenge and a more stimulating life. A lot of parents agree wholeheartedly. As one satisfied customer puts it: “We have had four children through the public school system and I think that Hurtwood House is the only one which has really delivered what it promised.” Indeed, Hurtwood has a file of letters as thick as your arm from grateful parents, and clearly what they appreciate most is that Hurtwood has given their children the confidence to cope with anything in life and has fired up their enthusiasm. “Her mind was turned on,” says one, “and her appetite for learning is voracious. I want you to know that you lit the fuse.” Who could ask for anything more?

presents your new season
A
utumn is well and truly here. The summer collections have long since been cleared from shop floors and the first drops of the new season have arrived, with snuggly sweaters and big leather boots making the prospect of dipping temperatures not quite so depressing after all. That’s right, there’s lots to be excited about on the fashion front for autumn/winter, because the catwalks gave us some stunning - and, for once, wearable - trends, and now you can shop them to your heart’s content on the high street. But don’t, whatever you do, start spending until you’re up to speed with the season’s style forecast. Here are the key fashion themes you need to know about for AW18 and how to shop them now...
Animal print If you’ve taken even a cursory glance at the high street of late, it can’t have escaped your notice that animal prints are everywhere. That’s because leopard roared back into fashion on the catwalks, seen everywhere from Max Mara to Tom Ford, while zebra was trotted out at Balenciaga and Halpern, and tiger print growled on the girls at Bottega Veneta. Try the trend: Dorothy Perkins Beige Brushed Leopard Print V-Neck Jumper, currently reduced to £22.50 from £30
Leather An overarching theme of ‘clothes as armour’ emerged from the shows, and leather played a big part in that. The leather dress is one of the key pieces of the season, therefore, as seen at Stella McCartney (rouched), Givenchy (belted) and Victoria Beckham (collared). Try the trend: Sosandar Navy Zip Through Leather Look Collared Dress, £69 62 NOVEMBER 2018

Seventies The decade most designers plundered this season? It was without doubt the Seventies, specifically the collars, coats and colours. Collars were long and sharp at Louis Vuitton and Chloe. Coats were big and fluffy (Vuitton again) or suede at Tory Burch and Coach. The colours - brown, beige, mustard, chestnut were everywhere, particularly the cosy layers at Roksanda and Miu Miu. Try the trend: Miss Selfridge Rust Brown Corduroy Baker Boy Hat, £12; Teddy Coat, £65; Rust Tile V-Neck Pinafore Dress, £28; Stripe Wide Neck Ruffle Tee, £20 (shoes, stylist’s own; coat and tee available later in September)
Tweed A tweed transformation took place throughout the season, the traditional fabric given a modern spin by designers. At Altuzarra, that meant sharp overcoats while at Prada it was bright hues, but the most creative example was in London, where Matty Bovan showed deconstructed woven skirt suits with fabulous houndstooth boots. Try the trend: Glamorous.com Multi Tweed Button Front Blazer, £42
Pleats A knee-length pleated skirt has become a summer staple in recent years, but now designers are making the case for wearing a longer length in winter. From the elegant evening styles at Emilia Wickstead and Lanvin, to the cream creations at JW Anderson and Victoria Beckham, the one thing they all have in common is that they’re delightfully swishy. Try the trend: Topshop Pleated Crepe Skirt, £69
The Queen
a model wearing Miss Selfridge Selfridge.
The Duchesses of Cambridge and Sussex may get the lion’s share of the fashion column inches, but on the AW18 catwalks, the Queen was the undisputed style icon. The most literal interpretation was at Toga, where Her Majesty doppelgangers, complete with gloves and head scarves, appeared on the runway. Regal silks and florals also made an appearance at Celine, Moschino, Richard Quinn and more, while the Town and Country tweeds trend also referenced the royal family. Try the trend: Lipsy Floral High Neck Blouse, £34, Next
Headgear Hoods, balaclavas, berets, head scarves - all manner of millinery appeared in the AW18 collections. There were even crowns and tiaras at Dolce & Gabbana (there’s the royal influence again), but if you’re looking for something a bit less ostentatious, try a Versace inspired beret or floral head scarf instead. Try the trend: TK Maxx Euroseta Fashion Black & Purple Silk Floral Scarf, £16.99 NOVEMBER 2018 63

he major trend of autumn/winter, animal print is everywhere - but how do you style leopard spots or snakey stripes without looking like fashion roadkill? For starters, ignore the catwalks. Well, not entirely, because that’s where the trend originated, with Victoria Beckham’s abstract leopard print midi dress, Tom Ford’s skinny snake trousers, and Halpern’s sparking zebra frocks - plus so many leopard-spot coats we lost count. At Max Mara, Lara Stone and Gigi Hadid went on a style safari, clad in layer upon layer of leopard - and as cool as they looked on the runway, this is not, in all honesty, a look that works in real life. Instead, you want to take a leaf out of Beckham’s ever-stylish book, choosing one - and only one printed piece to showcase per outfit. These bold prints are best used sparingly, letting them take centre stage alongside neutral hues and sleek separates. There are so many gorgeous animal print midi dresses around, perfect for pairing with knee-high boots (or ankle boots and black tights when it gets colder). Leopard is the most prevalent print in the shops, but faux snakeskin is a chic choice for accessories, from muted grey or brown bags, to bright red or yellow boots. And a fluffy zebra stripe jumper is the ‘it’ knit of the season - team yours with skinny black jeans and a pair of statement earrings for a fun Eighties feels.

KA’s autumn/winter collection is bursting with elegant additions for the home. Founded in the late Nineties by Annabel Astor, Lucinda Waterhouse and Sue Jones, OKA has grown from a small mailorder business to having 14 stores, the most recent of which is the 11,000 sq. ft. store in Guildford’s new Tunsgate Quarter. Each season, OKA unveils three new looks created by the co-founders, showcasing their

individual style. This season OKA co-founder and Creative Director, Sue Jones set herself the task of designing a family chalet in Aspen. Immersed in a beautiful alpine valley, the chalet is comfortable, spacious and right next to the slopes. Without losing its traditional charm, Sue balanced the scheme by using rich fabrics and wooden furnishings alongside modern touches that keep it looking slick, smart and sophisticated. the chalet and the open-plan design makes it a great space for relaxing and entertaining. The star of the dining room is the grand wooden dining table that fits up to 12 people and is perfect for hosting an alpine dinner party. Sue didn’t want to lose the finer details in this scheme and has filled the dining table with elegant tableware and glassware. The sitting room follows the same warm-toned colour palette used throughout the mountainside home, made even more inviting thanks to the large woven rug and goat hair floor cushions. Sue has made it her intention to create a lot of seating in the sitting room with two sofas, two armchairs and an ottoman that can double up as an extra seat so that there’s space for everyone. With views looking out onto the amazing mountain scenery, the master bedroom is an impressive space. Sue wanted the bedroom to feel inviting and has utilised the warmth of the wooden walls by including a leather sofa and luxurious goat hair cushion covers that tie the scheme together. We have been trading for 30 years and work with over 20 different artists, some local, as well as crafting items ourselves, resulting in a very varied and unique collection. We continually look to source new and exciting products and with our personal, professional and down to earth approach we have gained a highly respected reputation and loyal client base. We are able to offer interior design advice with a wide choice of many different styles of furniture and accessories to suit. In addition, due to our considerable expertise and experience in furniture design and restoration, and with our own onsite workshops, we are able to provide a full furniture bespoke service.
Fire Spheres, Pits and BBQs Our Fire Spheres come in five sizes and ten designs and are hand cut in 6mm steel. Both attractive in shape and design they are also highly efficient at retaining and transferring heat, keeping you toasty warm. We can also cut bespoke designs, a modest artwork fee on top. Our Fire Pits and BBQs are again handmade in 6mm steel, and are ideal for relaxing around and cooking on. The BBQs come in many different sizes and designs with one to four cooking arms, allowing the whole family to cook their own food if they desire.
Furniture and Accessories
Reeves Restorations makes a large percentage of the furniture on display. Some furniture is imported but only to the very highest quality control. This is not where it stops however as our onsite craftsmen will bespoke any item to your exacting requirements, changing the colour, design or size of the object.
Bespoke and Restoration Last month a couple came to us with a special request. After many years of being together in their cosy yet small double divan bed they had decided that although loving each other as they did, they needed to put a few more inches between them while sleeping! As the headboard matched all their other pieces of bedroom furniture, we suggested cutting the headboard in half and inserting a section in the middle. After increasing the dimensions of the original headboard we went on to cut and produce the additional sections required to transform the bed from a small double to a super kingsize.

uild atmosphere and drama throughout your home with Urban Avenue’s stunning selection of pendant lights. Available in a mix of styles and materials, each with an ability to create texture and interest, add ambience and facilitate conversation. Industrial-style lights and architectural pendants are great for adding edginess and a sense of instant cool to a room. The statement Pylon Suspension Light Duo would look great in an airy warehouse style space and has a contemporary, architectural design with functional appeal in spades. The pair of pendants are suspended from a single ceiling rose, each featuring a pulley mechanism that allows for flexible positioning on the ceiling and easily adjustable height. Offered in black or white, the metal structure has a feel of industrial elegance. The Industrial Pendant Trio is a modern take on classic industrial lamps designed by Kaschkasch for Dreizehngrad. The clear anthracite crystal glass shade is supported by a solid oak cone, which also houses the LED bulb and technical components. The hand-blown glass naturally has slight variations - signs of the traditional glass blowing process that give unique character to each piece. In this Trio, three variations of the pendant lights hang from a single ceiling rose, creating a chic cluster. Add a playful touch to your children’s room with the pink Done by Deer pendant. With a classic, vintage-inspired form, the metal pendant light

offers a vibrant spin on industrial style. The elegant Funk pendant is minimalist in design, allowing the beauty of the natural woodgrain to shine. The fine veneer shade, in either maple or walnut, provides a warm translucency when lit, giving it an element of Norse forest mysticism. Each of these shades are handcrafted to the highest standards. Handmade in Italy by design studio ILIDE, the warming Africa pendant light is composed of two overlapping ceramic bodies. The white glazed inner element emerges from the angular opening of the grey, matt shell that surrounds it. The impeccably finished light emits a directional glow, providing a warm atmosphere and timeless elegance to its surroundings. The cool twisted glass Gala pendant light is hand-blown in Italy using traditional glass making techniques. Gala Rigata has an emerald green stem and a diagonal ribbed texture, lending it an elegant antique feel. For a striking contrast, combine both it with the contrasting red stemmed Gala Liscia in a cluster or a row. The Gala Pendant is a beautiful design, intended to be used with long vintage-style bulbs for ultimate effect. Whether you’re searching for a statement pendant to illuminate the dining table or kitchen island or an ambient light for relaxing, Urban Avenue will have a bold shape or colourful shade that will create a strong accent for any interior. www.urbanavenue.co.uk

Designers have revealed their new decor schemes for autumn and winter. Gabrielle Fagan selects her three favourites.
Autumn Style A
utumn is the time of year when nature changes it’s colours, and thanks to the new home collections, it’s easy to ring the changes indoors too. Choose from sumptuous florals, a cool Nordic theme that celebrates easy, stylish comfort, or full-fat maximalism, with its emphasis on luxury and individuality. Be inspired - whether it’s a total revamp or just a refresh with a few new accessories - so that your rooms are fashionably kitted out for the seasons to come...
Make magic with moody blooms “Escape the everyday and saturate your home with glorious jewel tones this autumn. There are so many ways to use them - in Oriental, deco, and bold floral prints - I love that it all feels a bit fantasy,” enthuses Lois Vincent, home designer at House of Fraser. “You can up the glamour quota by mixing in a few gilded accessories; after all, who doesn’t need a flamingo candlestick in their life?” DECOR TIP: Rich plum and berry shades are the perfect autumnal palette for a cosy feel. If you don’t want to go full-on floral, choose dusky pink and warm neutrals for a backdrop and then layer up with
84 NOVEMBER 2018
petal-rich accessories, from throws to bed linen.
Conjure calm chic spaces “Simple, minimal and layered - soft crafted neutrals and materials are set against stripped back rustic woods for this calm, tranquil look,” says Karen Thomas, head of design for Home at Marks & Spencer. “This palette of ‘Calming Neutrals’ is inspired by the change in seasons, and evokes a restful and relaxing feel for the home. As we move into autumn, we celebrate the urge to nest and stay indoors. Layer soft knits and textures for a casual lived-in feel, and use clean lines and smooth surfaces of cool marble and craft glazes to accessorise your living space.” DECOR TIP: If you’re reworking your entire living space, keep to a palette of pale grey, wood and white for walls, floor and furniture. Declutter to create a pared-back base, and if you want to warm the scheme, add accents of yellow or green in accessories or plants.
Decorate to the max “We expect maximalism to be one of the breakthrough looks for autumn and winter, and we’re already seeing people investing in bold, bright pieces for their homes,” says Fionnuala Johnston, senior designer at John Lewis. “Maximalism is not necessarily about overcrowding a space, but choosing to be bold by showcasing your own unique style in a creative way. Carefully considered mixing and matching of colours, prints and textures is key to achieving the look, and it’s the perfect opportunity to layer designs and blend references. “A good example would be combining a contemporary drinks trolley with tropical, vintage wallpaper, for a refined glamour that celebrates old and new style.” Designer Abigail Ahern has embraced the luxe look and made it her own, with her richly designed animal-inspired Edition homeware for Debenhams. DECOR TIP: Floor-to-ceiling curtains and reflective surfaces, such as mirrored glass and metalllics, contribute to the luxe look and create an atmosphere of elegance. A successful home will reflect your personality and taste and contain pieces that make you smile - don’t be afraid to experiment.

rban industrial is the latest look for bathrooms. This scheme takes inspiration from warehouse living to introduce handsome, rugged fittings into the bathroom such as cast-iron baths, scuffed brass taps and Crittall inspired shower doors. But you don’t have to live in a disused factory to embrace this look. Elements can be incorporated into both traditional and contemporary bathrooms to give them an instant update. Start with the bath. A classic cast iron bath will create a bold centrepiece in any bathroom and add value to your home. It is a myth that the floor in the bathroom needs to be reinforced to accommodate a cast iron bath. A bath full of water and a bather is only the equivalent weight to four people. If you are happy for four people to stand in your bathroom without worrying that they will crash through the floor to the room below, then you can have a cast iron bath. The Brunel cast iron bath from Aston Matthews features a handsome rivet detail, perfect for the industrial look. Taking inspiration from the metal framed windows found in many old warehouses, the Grid shower panel features a satin black aluminium frame. These versatile panels can be used as a shower screen or to create a subtle divide between the master bedroom and ensuite. You can’t get more industrial than concrete, so Aston Matthews have included two solid concrete basins in the range, Model One and Model Two are available in natural grey and work particularly well with the Acme range of scuffed brass taps with their unusual wheel controls Complete your industrial bathroom with coordinating accessories such as the Acme range in brass, satin black Nero collection or Alto bronze.
90 NOVEMBER 2018
And don’t forget storage to keep your new bathroom clutter free. Wall hung units will always make a small room appear larger but, if space allows, consider a chunky wood basin unit such as Timor in reclaimed teak.
Aston Matthews opens in Guildford Aston Matthews was founded in 1823 and in its long 195-year history it has only had one showroom, in Islington, London, however this year the company opened a spacious new showroom in Guildford. Located on Chertsey Street, the new showroom offers a wide array of fittings for both the traditional and contemporary bathroom, displayed across two floors. Experienced staff are available in the showroom to offer help and advice on the best bathroom fittings to suit your lifestyle and your home. Find out more at: www.astonmatthews.co.uk

Creating a Sociable Living
A
brilliantly sociable living situation led Sarah and Anthony White to contact Origin to finally build the swimming pool they had always dreamed of. After selling a company, the Whites were able to purchase the two neighbouring houses and have friends come to live in each one. Knocking down the garden barriers made it clear that all that was missing from this otherwise ideal set up was a bespoke pool for them all to enjoy. Keen to find a reputable company that could manage the project from start to finish, the couple got in touch with Origin, the UK’s leading luxury indoor pool company, who quickly got to work on creating the couple’s beautiful indoor pool and spa.
The Right Time Not only did the White’s housing situation now perfectly suit the project, but the timing also could not have been better. Sarah explains: “We have three children; two of them have recently finished rather stressful exams. The new addition to the garden provides the perfect space for them to relax and have fun with friends every evening. I quite often look out of the kitchen window to see the lights turned on and the kids having a whale of a time, it’s absolutely wonderful.” 92 NOVEMBER 2018
The new addition is not only perfect for entertaining, but for exercise too, and Sarah now begins every day by swimming 30 lengths.

Life with Origin
Revolutionised Space From the first ideas all the way through to the final build, the Whites had the full attention of the experts from Origin. The couple had regular meetings with the team, whilst the builders on site ensured they were kept informed with every single decision that was made. Sarah comments on the building process: “Origin were great with advising on how to incorporate a spa and a long pool, and even invited us to look at three of their other pools for inspiration. We experienced the flexibility of the service as they quickly reconfigured the plans to meet our new requests. “The space has been entirely revolutionised. What used to be an area of shrubs and trees is now completely useable. After the build, we were

Sarah and Anthony are delighted with their new pool and continue to be impressed with Origin’s services, even now the pool is complete. “Origin has been brilliant with the aftersales follow-up and we were not left alone with the new responsibility of looking after a pool. We chose to opt for Origin’s aftercare package; every month an engineer visits to carry out routine maintenance and check pool chemistry levels. Every query we’ve had has been answered immediately.” Origin has over 35 years’ experience building award-winning swimming pools. The company can work with you to build your dream pool house, just like they did for the White family. To speak to the Origin experts please contact 01895 453996.

ith a background in joinery and timber windows, and over 19 years with The Heritage Window Company, there’s not much Russell Windram doesn’t know about windows. Based in its Dorking showroom, he’s seen it grow from a small family business into a major player manufacturing and installing slimline aluminium windows all over the South East. Chris Griffiths met up with him to get his unique perspective on the company’s success. What does The Heritage Window Company do? “We specialise in slimline aluminium windows for period and new properties. Very often that’s replacing steel or uPVC windows, or increasingly it might be a new build or larger project working with an architect.” What’s your role at Heritage? “I am the Area Sales Manager for the South East. Really I see myself as an advisor – helping customers turn their dreams into reality.” What’s special about Heritage Windows? “A lot of the time people are trying to achieve a particular look. They want the benefits of a modern window but still want to preserve the character of their property. Or it could be something they’ve seen in a magazine. Our Benenden™ Conservation windows were originally designed as a slimline aluminium alternative for ageing steel windows, but the range is flexible enough to meet almost any requirement where a slimline profile is called for, and we have the skills and experience in-house to deliver on our promises.” There are many window companies out there, what do you think sets The Heritage Window Company apart? “We’re famous for making quality products and providing excellent customer service. Unlike some, we’re not importing product from Poland, we manufacture all our windows ourselves in our own UK factory so we have ultimate quality control over raw materials, painting and fabrication. The Benenden™ Conservation design is unique to Heritage – you can’t buy it anywhere else - and it’s still the slimmest aluminium profile on the UK market. It has a very high thermal specification, an
expected lifespan in excess of 20 years and complies with all the current Building Regulations, Document Part Q and PAS24, so it’s good for replacement and new build applications. We also adopt a more passive approach than the traditional double-glazing salesman – consulting, providing a realistic quote and leaving the customer to make up their minds in their own time.” What about customer service? “I think one reason people choose Heritage is because we are able to reassure them that we look after them through the whole customer journey. We talk about ‘The Heritage Experience’ where we strive for a seamless service from initial enquiry and site visit, through manufacturing and installation right through to aftercare. So we have ownership of the total customer experience. And it’s not just lip service, it’s real. We train our own Installation Teams and employ Surveyors and Field Managers to ensure that work is completed to customer expectations. It may be old fashioned in this day and age, but it works! In fact, we receive hundreds of positive testimonials from customers each year, and around 65% of our business comes from recommendations or repeat business, so that speaks for itself.” What’s your outlook for the future? “Aluminium is the fastest growing sector of the windows market – it looks amazing, it’s durable and low maintenance, it’s recyclable, it is cheaper than steel, and is often the preferred choice in light of recent concerns over plastic waste. So with Heritage’s reputation for quality and service I am very excited for the future.” The Heritage Window Company, 1 West Street, Dorking, Surrey RH4 1BL. Tel: 01306 880 404. OMU Brands has announced the relaunch of Beautify. Relaunching into the UK with a fresh, contemporary aesthetic and a current and engaged outlook - Beautify is stepping out of the shadows and into the fore, with perfectly manicured feet, naturally. Beautify launched in 2013 as part of DOMU Brands, the home of VonShef and VonHaus. Since then, Beautify has grown into an international company, selling in the US and European markets, and inspiring beauty fans across the world. Where previously Beautify has only been available through the DOMU website and Marketplaces, the relaunch will include a dedicated UK Beautify website, designed in-house, keeping our target demographic in mind every step of the way. In keeping with the demands of 2018, Beautify is evolving into a more culturally aware, diverse and outspoken brand, offering a refreshing and youthful yet considered approach to beauty storage and homewares. As always, DOMU products are always designed with longevity in mind, allowing great quality products for a reasonable price. Pots of Colour As Autumn makes itself feel known, plant some pretty pots to brighten the scene. Hannah Stephenson digs up top tips.
A
s pots of tired summer bedding are tipped onto the compost heap to make way for autumn and winter flowers, there are certain things you should do now to ensure your container plants for the cooler months get off to a good start. Here’s our step-bystep guide...
Provide good drainage Once you’ve emptied your pots of summer bedding and given the containers a good clean, line the base of your pots with crocks from broken terracotta pots or bits of polystyrene that your new bedding comes in, to make sure you have ample drainage for new autumn and winter bedding. As autumn rains come, if your pots are exposed to the elements, the roots of your plants can become too wet if you don’t include sufficient drainage when you plant them up. Mix a handful of sharp stone or grit into the fresh compost to help drainage and stand your pots on feet, so the moisture doesn’t come up through the pot and soak the roots from below.
Fill pots well Unlike summer bedding, which grows rapidly to cover the whole area of the pot, winter bedding is slower to make an impact - so it’s best to plant winter bedding closer together in tubs, troughs and hanging baskets. They won’t have as much growing time as summer plants had to make their mark, so don’t penny-pinch on the amount you buy.
Don’t over-water Winter-flowering pansies and other bedding won’t need as much water as your summer annuals did, so don’t mix water-retaining granules into the fresh compost, or you’ll end up with rotten roots and wilted plants. 104 NOVEMBER 2018
Shelter containers If you have planted up pots with spring bulbs, violas and pansies, put them in a sheltered spot say under a porch or cold greenhouse when the winter weather is at its worst - but make sure they get maximum light so they can benefit from even weaker sunshine. As the weather gets cooler, protect plants by grouping containers and moving them closer to the wall to keep off wind and rain.
Choose plants wisely Some bedding only appears in the autumn, including dwarf Michaelmas daisies, pot chrysanthemums and miniature cyclamen, while orange-berried winter cherries and ornamental kales appear slightly later on in the season. All can be put to good use in a container and enhanced with evergreen foliage plants. Garden centres will now be awash with autumn and winter bedding, including pansies and violas, wallflowers, dianthus and cyclamen. Use a showstopper as the centre plant and then use trailers, such as creeping Jenny or ivy, around the outside of your pots, filling the gaps with pretty violas and pansies.

An oasis on your doorstep A guide to London’s most expensive garden squares
L
Park Crescent, W1
iving or working in London can create a buzz like no other. Commuters, residents, prestigious stores, vibrant bars and restaurants - the atmosphere for some can be electric. In contrast, in some of the most exclusive areas of London are private, tranquil green spaces….the city’s garden squares. They’re a protected species, some accessible only with a key and surrounded by some of the most expensive homes on the market. Many are period properties often constructed in crescents, terraces and squares. So important are they that, in 1931, the London Squares Preservation Act was introduced to protect more than 400 from being built over. Let’s take a look at the most expensive and how much its privacy and exclusivity will cost you…
Eaton Square, Belgravia £5.88million
One of the most prestigious addresses in London. Famous residents include Prime Ministers Neville Chamberlain and Stanley Baldwin. More recently, advertising mogul Charles Saatchi and football managers Jose Mourinho and Sven-Goran Eriksson are all thought to have lived there. Eaton Square is a stone’s throw from Sloane Street – home to luxurious brands such as Gucci, Cartier, Dior and Versace.
Wilton Crescent Garden, Belgravia

Eaton Square Gardens
Carlton House Terrace Gardens, Westminster
£8.79million
Kensington Square, W8
106 NOVEMBER 2018
Top of the list is this exclusive road just a short stroll from Buckingham Palace. A property will cost you an average of £8.79million. Former residents include Prime Ministers William Gladstone, Earl Grey and Lord Palmerston. It is the location of what is thought to be Britain’s most expensive home, with rumours six years ago that a Saudi prince had sold 18 Carlton House Terrace for £250million.
Wilton Crescent was named after Thomas Egerton, 2nd Earl of Wilton. It has been home to royals, political leaders and celebrities ever since. Surrounded by a semi-circle of graceful whitestucco houses, it’s a calm and tranquil place. Among its most famous residents were Louis Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma, a British Royal Navy officer and uncle of Prince Philip, who was infamously assassinated by the IRA in 1979.
St James’s Gardens, Notting Hill £3.81million
The gardens are laid out in an informal woodland style, dominated by fine chestnut and lime trees dating back to the 19th century. The garden is in the heart of the Norland Conservation Area, with the premiums surely pushed up by its close proximity to

the open spaces of Holland Park, attracting many wealthy businesspeople and celebrities such as Sir Richard Branson and David Beckham.
Thurloe Square, Brompton £3.76million
The square is named after John Thurloe, an advisor of Oliver Cromwell, who owned the land in the 17th century. Sir Henry Cole (1808–1892), the first Director of the V&A Museum, lived at No. 33. The building is marked with a blue plaque.. Not only is the square dog-friendly, it also has a children’s playground and a stroll from the shops, restaurants and museums of desirable Knightsbridge.

Rosmead Garden, Notting Hill £3.64million
Perhaps one of London’s most famous garden squares, having featured heavily in the Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts film Notting Hill. The space is quite unique among its contemporaries, with many of the homes surrounding it having direct access onto the green via a backdoor, making it a rear garden of sorts.
Kensington Square, Kensington £3.16million
With an average property price of £3.16million, it was originally known as King’s Square, built in honour of the reigning monarch at the time, James ll. The garden is private and not open to the public, though it has taken part in the annual Open Garden Squares Weekend. Former residents include composer Hubert Parry, philosopher John Stuart Mill and John Simon the sanitary reformer.
Park Crescent, Marylebone £3million
This crescent is among the most prestigious in the capital, in a desirable location at the north end of Portland Place and south of Marylebone Road. It comprises beautiful stuccoed terraced houses designed by the architect John Nash, and forms into a semi-circle. The original plan was to build a circular building, but only the bottom half was completed. Between the arms of the crescent is a private garden, recognised as being of historic interest.
Hanover Gardens, Notting Hill £2.97million
This peaceful woodland garden is situated within the Ladbroke Estate. Among its famous former residents was Dame Sylvia Crowe, the noted landscape architect. This communal garden used to be known as Hanover Terrace Garden, Hanover Terrace being the old name of Lansdowne Walk.
Markham Square, Chelsea £2.73million

After WW2, the square was redesigned by the Royal Hospital Chelsea’s head gardener to resemble a private country garden. These exclusive gated gardens are steeped in history and treasured sanctuaries amongst the hustle and bustle of our capital. Wealthy buyers from around the globe continue to be attracted to London’s squares, mainly due to their scale, style and timeless beauty.

Lettings Market Comment Q4 2018 I
love this point in the lettings calendar. It’s the time at which the market takes a breather and we have a chance to take stock of what has happened over the summer and to gear up for the busy run up to Christmas. Thankfully 2018 was a strong year for lettings in Surrey. This isn’t surprising when you take into account what’s been going on. Following all the turmoil of 2017 the market was revived and straight out of the blocks in January with transactions up at all levels. We welcomed seeing large numbers of oil companies relocating employees. This corporate market continued through the summer and has gone right up to September which is most unusual. What has been more interesting is the return of the domestic market with families selling their homes, avoiding chains and becoming renters again with cash in the bank. This is fuelled by a weak sales market which is probably here for the foreseeable future. Tenants are no longer panicking that if they don’t buy a house this year then by next year they will have risen out of reach. So amongst local families renting becomes the smart choice again. This resurgence in the number of tenants is starting to put pressure on supply. We didn’t see it happen fully in the summer but I suspect as we go into the Q1 of 2019 it will manifest itself more. Despite the governments ongoing war against investment landlords that has strangled the buy-to let market in recent years we are slowly seeing the stock levels being supported by accidental landlords instead. These owners are choosing not to sell in a sluggish market but to rent out their properties instead, providing a much needed life-line to the private rented sector. It’s a start but demand will only get greater so more is needed. This isn’t exclusive to small houses and flats. We have seen record rents in Elmbridge with £8,000 to £20,000pcm asking prices being snapped up by private tenants. They are deliberately choosing to spend their money on rent instead of handing
110 NOVEMBER 2018
it over to Phillip Hammond in dizzying sums for stamp duty. We are all expecting a few years of uncertainty ahead but I believe the letting market should stay relatively stable through the turbulence. Having been in lettings for over 25 years, there is very little that we haven’t seen from crashes to peaks and everything in between. Knowledge is king in these matters so if you are considering letting your home for the first time or you are a seasoned multiple landlord looking for straightforward and informed advice, then don’t hesitate to contact us. Feeling Stuck with Your Property Management Company? You’re Not.
What is a property management company? When many people hear the phrase ‘property management’ they instantly think of high street lettings agents. While some do deal with flat lettings, property management companies do so much more than that. The easiest way to understand what a property manager does is by thinking about the communal areas in a housing development, private community or block of flats. While families and individuals are responsible for the areas that they directly rent or purchase, the communal areas, such as hallways, stairways and landscaped areas, are generally managed by a property management company. These companies arrange services such as gardening, cleaning and general repairs while on larger sites property management companies maintain underground parking, lifts, and on-site gyms. Who is HML? HML is one of England’s premiere property management companies and has been operating for more than 50 years. Not only do they do the basic property management described above, they also provide additional dedicated services which include placing property insurance, coordinating health and safety inspections, building surveying, concierge services, preparing budgets and helping with end of year financials. These additional services are tailored for each property, giving the developer or residents a tailored service, suited to their needs and wishes. Rebecca Wilson, HML’s Senior Business Development Manager, said: “Quite often residents don’t realise what property management companies do, and, that providers can be changed if the residents and owners aren’t happy with their current management company. In fact, it generally isn’t as hard as most people think.” By law in England, contracts with property management companies are set for a maximum term of a year, minus a day. That means that developments and housing estates can change their 112 NOVEMBER 2018

property management companies every year, if they are unhappy with their current service. Most contracts will be auto-renewed, generally with a three-month notice period. Rebecca continued: “We find that most people who are unhappy with their property management company think that they are stuck, with no options open to them. That simply isn’t the case. It is always worth looking into finding a management company that fits the needs of the property.” But how does someone go about changing their property manager, especially if they weren’t sure about where to look or who decides the manager for their property? “Residents might need to speak to the Director of their Resident Management Company, but if you are interested in finding out who to speak to and which process best suits your needs, you can always contact HML,” explained Rebecca. “We have a robust team of Business Development Mangers who are in place to help make the process of changing property managers as easy as possible.”
