Guildford Symphony Orchestra Presents Beethoven And The Emperor and beauty too. The nickname allegedly arose from a comment by one of Napoleon’s officers stationed in Vienna that it was ‘an emperor of a concerto’. The theme of empire runs through the concert. The programme opens with Finlandia, Op 26 a symphonic poem by the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. It was written in 1899 as a covert protest against increasing censorship by the Russian Empire. Most of the piece is taken up with rousing and turbulent music, evoking the national struggle of the Finnish people, before leading into the serenely melodic Finlandia Hymn. The final work in the concert was written in the twilight of the British Empire. William Walton’s 1st Symphony composed in 1934 paints a vivid musical picture of a young man’s emotional turmoil at the break-up of an intense relationship and the ecstacy of falling in love all over again. Walton intended to ‘blow his contemporary composers out of the water’ with this symphony and the volcanic eruption of searing, emotion with its contrasting, wildly celebratory, final movement with its echoes of Elgar, certainly did just that.

This community orchestra is the oldest, and the only surviving, orchestra in the borough. It performs to a high standard under the exacting direction of conductor Darrell Davison and its 97th season of five very varied concerts is looking exciting. After launching the season on October 4 with a family concert for all generations: It’s Magic, at Guildford Spectrum, the orchestra is now gearing up for the first of its major events at G Live on November 21. Beethoven’s grand tour de force, the Emperor Concerto, will be the high spot of this super programme which includes Sibelius’s Finlandia and Walton’s Symphony No 1. The soloist for the Beethoven is Peter Foggitt, pianist, organist, composer, singer and conductor, who will bring fantastic all-round musicianship to his interpretation of this very popular piano concerto that breaks the bounds of the Classical and looks towards the Romantic Movement. Peter is famous for his improvisation skills. Acclaimed at the age of seventeen for his ‘stunning... fire-breathing virtuosity’ in extemporisation, he is equally comfortable in classical and contemporary styles, working with jazz trios and improvising classical fugues. His ‘Emperor’ will definitely breathe fire! Every portrait of Beethoven implies a composer of tempestuous, brooding and muscular music. But his final piano Concerto No 5, ‘the Emperor’, reveals tenderness

Art and gifts in Odiham at The Frame Gallery events, new product lines, showcasing emerging artists, or involvement with the local community. Earlier this summer, the upstairs of the gallery was reopened after a refurbishment and now includes two lifestyle showrooms selling a variety of textiles, home accessories, lighting, furniture, and of course, art. During the renovation, the historic Number 81 building underwent dendrochronology testing to confirm if it dates back as far as the 1400s, much earlier than previously thought. While the outer shell and some internal idiosyncrasies reveal some of the building’s history, the gallery space and lifestyle showrooms are altogether modern. Bright and airy with prominent art on display, no paintings are left to lurk in the shadows. For those looking to purchase a gift for a loved one, there is a fine selection of handmade and unique pottery, ceramics, sculpture and homeware.

The current exhibition at The Frame Gallery is Pip McGarry’s ‘The Big Five’ running from October 2nd until 18th.

T

he award-winning Frame Gallery is situated in the pretty, historic village of Odiham, north Hampshire. For the last five years, Jan Baker and the team have been showcasing originals and specialist prints by exciting, British artists, many of which are from the county or neighbouring areas. Among the talent on show is internationally acclaimed watercolourist Jean Haines, along with artists Sarah Pye, Jake Winkle, Andrew Lievesly, Richard Pikesley, Hilary Dancer, Lynne Davies, and Julia Cassels. The Frame is also the only gallery in Hampshire to sell originals by the highly sought after and world famous wildlife artist, Pip McGarry. With a host of new exhibitions throughout the year, art lovers are treated to Private Views, book signings and ‘Meet the Artist’ events, drawing visitors from across the region to this little corner of Hampshire. Pip McGarry’s 2014 show, ‘The Great McGarry’, achieved record breaking sales for the gallery of over £100,000, making it the artist’s second most successful solo exhibition to date - an astonishing result for a small, rural gallery. To achieve success like this at a small village gallery outside London is, as Pip puts it, ‘truly extraordinary’. He attributes the gallery’s success to its professional approach, outstanding customer service, and relationships with successful, like-minded artists. Further praise was received at this year’s prestigious Art and Framing Awards, organised by the Fine Art Trade Guild, where The Frame was awarded Art Retailer of the Year 2015. Thrilled to be recognised nationally as a leading art retailer, Jan and her hardworking team are dedicated to supporting their artists, and keep everything they do at the gallery fresh and exciting for customers, whether it’s

money for nothing

A

new BBC ONE television program ‘Money for Nothing’ is featuring the talents of local Artist Blacksmith Bex Simon. The show, running weekdays at 3.45pm until the 25th of September, has proved an exciting new challenge for Bex who is known for her larger bespoke private commissions and Public Art installations. The show, presented by Sarah Moore, with the help of a selection of imaginative designers, take objects bound for the rubbish tip and gives them a new lease of life by repurposing and up-cycling, to create unique and desirable pieces of furniture and jewellery. 1 8 OCTOBER 2 0 1 5

Bex has brought her boundless creativity to her role in ‘Money for Nothing’ and although repurposing items isn’t Bex’s usual way of working, it’s not the first time she has taken on this kind of challenge. When a client came to her wanting to turn an ejector seat from a fighter jet into an office chair, the result was certainly unique! Drawing on inspiration from the artist H.R. Giger, Bex designed a piece of dark fantasy that almost feels alive with movement. The difference this time is the speed at which the design process would need to take place. She has loved testing out her design skills in a whole new way and from making floor lamps out of car suspension springs to seats out of baths, Bex has let her imagination run riot and produced not only functional but truly beautiful pieces of furniture. Bex started her career as a blacksmith in 1999 after training at Hereford College and has since built up a reputation as one of the country’s most progressive blacksmiths. Now working with her husband David Harris from their forge in Guildford, they are able to take on commissions of all shapes and sizes. Bex’s unique style draws on inspiration from many sources but her love of organic forms and the natural world is clear from the many large pieces she has produced. From banisters and handrails to large pieces of public art, Bex brings her irrepressible enthusiasm to every job she undertakes and actively encourages her clients to be as involved in the design process as possible. www.bexsimon.com

rake’s in Ripley has been serving delicious, award-winning food since it opened over a decade ago. Steve and Serina Drake’s eponymously named Michelin-starred restaurant continues to set the pace with adventurous, seasonal food in an elegant, yet relaxed, beautiful setting. Steve was honoured to be invited to contribute to a beautiful recipe book - Recipes for Life- that was published to raise funds for the Leaders in Oncology Care’s (LOC) Living Well Programme. Written by Peter Marshall and Michel Roux OBE in consultation with a consultant oncologist, it features recipes created by Steve and nine other leading chefs. It offers expert guidance on nutrition and appetite-enhancing recipes for cancer sufferers and those going through treatment and people recovering from the disease, of which there are around two million in the UK. Here, from the book, is Steve’s delicious recipe for Poached Butternut Squash with Cranberry Ice and Grated Chocolate – something we can all enjoy without guilt in the lead up to and over the Festive Season.

Poached Butternut: • Peel and dice the butternut squash to a dice of approximately 2-3cm. • Place in a pan, in which it just covers the bottom and add the split vanilla pod, the sugar, water and juice of half a lemon. • Bring up to the boil and then simmer very gently for 15 minutes, being careful it doesn’t break down. • Allow to cool in the pan, and then refrigerate in a covered plastic container. Cranberry Ice: • Dissolve the sugar in water and add the mixture to the cranberry purée. • Pour into a shallow plastic container and place in the freezer. • Once fully frozen, take a fork and scrape the frozen mixture to ceate snow- like effect. Keep in the freezer until needed. To serve: • Spoon the chunks of butternut into a shallow bowl adding a little juice. • Grate the chocolate over using the fine side. Tear a couple of mint leaves all over. • Sprinkle the cranberry ice/snow over and eat immediately. • For an extra flavour hit, a very small sprinkle of good instant coffee works very well.

PAIN MATTERS

S

uffering from chronic pain can be one of life’s more unpleasant experiences and is often associated with profound social, psychological debilitating consequences. It is estimated that 14 million people in England alone have a chronic pain complaint. Of these individuals one in four said that their pain had kept them away from their usual activities, 41% of people are unable to work because of their pain and a further 13% have had to reduce their hours. Controlling pain therefore should be not only a humanitarian priority, but a socio-economic one also. Any discussion on pain needs to begin with one or two definitions. Perhaps the most appropriate place to start therefore is to define pain itself. It is important to realise that pain is a human expression of an unpleasant experience and in this sense it can be physical, psychological or even spiritual. Sometimes it is a combination of these factors. The way we perceive and report pain has a number of important influences. Some are poorly understood such as genetic determinants of pain and others such as cultural influences are a little more obvious (some countries in Europe report twice as much pain per individual as others!). Pain is usually divided into two types depending on its duration. Acute pain is defined as any report of pain up to three months. As such, simple injuries which resolve within that time period are described as acute . In an evolutionary sense acute pain developed as nature’s way of warning us of impending injury. A good example of this would be the way in which we withdraw from a noxious stimulus such as heat, which could cause burns and tissue damage . Chronic pain lasts greater than 3 months . It is usually considered to be a “dysfunction” of the sensory nervous system in tandem with some form of peripheral injury. A very good example of this is lower back pain which can occur on a chronic basis secondary to a pathological process such as an acute disc prolapse. Not

4 4 OCTOBER 2 0 1 5

infrequently this acute injury becomes chronic largely due to sensitisation of the nervous system . At Clare Park we have a dedicated team of professionals with a common approach to assisting people suffering from chronic pain. Given the fact that chronic pain is complex, we work in a multidisciplinary fashion addressing all of the dimensions of chronic pain. This means that we are able to treat physical elements of pain and psychological sequelae as well as providing a specialised rehabilitation service delivered by our physiotherapy team. We utilise standard investigation techniques on site such as MRI and CT scan and have access to cutting-edge technology including nuclear medicine. As such, more often than not we are able to determine the cause for a pain and treat accordingly. Treatment is focused on a multimodal approach. Pain relief techniques can include physical treatments such as nerve blocks, acupuncture and instruction in the use of devices such as TENS machine. Every patient has a rationalisation of their drug regime to maximise beneficial effects and reduce the incidence of adverse effects. Intervening to treat chronic pain can be very effective. In a recent national pain audit, 76% of patients who attended a pain clinic achieved improvements in their pain-related quality of life. At Clare Park we recognise that curing pain is perhaps an unachievable objective but major improvements in pain levels and quality of life are possible with our treatment programme. Bag a

Beautiful bathroom

Great ways to update your bathroom. By Julia Gray, Press Association

T

he quickest and easiest way to update your bathroom is to repaint the walls and ceiling. Special kitchen and bathroom emulsion paints (Dulux has separate ranges for kitchens and bathrooms, see www.dulux.co.uk) are designed to withstand steam, stains and mould. Traditionally, kitchen and bathroom emulsions had a sheen, but now many come in a matt finish and a wide range of colours, including some pretty dramatic ones. You should never apply paint in wet, damp or steamy conditions, so if you’ve only got one bathroom and you want to redecorate, ventilate it well before starting to paint. You can also paint the wall tiles if they’ve seen better days. Use a specialist primer, such as Dulux’s Primer for

something bulky like a bath or heavy like a toilet or basin. At a bathroom showroom or DIY store, you can see what you’re buying before you commit. Perhaps you fancy turning your bathroom into a wet room? Creating a wet room may work in a really small space, but with a low-profile shower tray and minimalist enclosure, you can get the wet-room look for less, plus there’s no danger of soggy towels or toilet paper. “One of the key bathroom trends we’ve noticed is the growing popularity of walk-in showers, as they combine convenience of use and a minimalist aesthetic,” says Emma Foster from Mira Showers. “A wet room is an aspiration for many consumers, but this look comes with practical difficulties. In order to prevent water-egress problems,

One of the key bathroom trends we’ve noticed is the growing popularity of walk-in showers Difficult Surfaces (£18.19 for 750ml), and a tile paint or conventional wood/metal paint for the topcoat - use a mini foam roller to get a good finish. Re-tiling will produce a better finish, but it’s a lot more effort, expense and mess, and you could damage the bathroom suite in the process ripping out old tiles can be a nightmare job. If you need to replace the bathroom suite, choose carefully. There are lots of inexpensive options online, but like anything only available to buy online, you can’t see and try the products first. If they’re not what you expected or wanted when they arrive, sending them back can be expensive, especially if it’s

4 OCTOBER 2 0 1 5

the wet room needs to be fully tanked, a complex job that requires specialist skills and knowledge. If this isn’t done correctly, it can turn into an expensive mess.” It’s really a good idea to consult a reputable plumber if you want to make anything more than cosmetic changes to your bathroom, as it’s easy to buy a shower, for example, that isn’t compatible with your home’s boiler and water system. In a bathroom, seemingly straightforward changes like re-jigging the layout or choosing a different bath or basin can have implications you might miss, but a good plumber won’t.

Achieve a contemporary style bathroom with help from

the Art of Living Group

A

bathroom renovation project combines interior design aspirations with more practical decisions. It’s a significant undertaking, with many considerations to be made – namely the choice of suite and how you want to style the finished room. A contemporary bathroom can suit any property – regardless of its era - and a trip to the Art of Living Group, based at the end of Bridge Road in Camberley, is the perfect place to start if this is the style you covet. Incorporating Park Street Interiors, Ceramic Tile Warehouse, Stone Gallery and Simply Flooring, those looking to update their bathroom can find everything they need in one place. Like kitchens, a superior quality bathroom suite can close a sale when it comes to buying or selling a home. The vast majority of homeowners are looking for stylish, good quality fixtures and fittings which don’t require a lot

6 OCTOBER 2 0 1 5

of work or money to be spent on replacing them. As it’s an important investment, Park Street Interiors always recommends that their customers stick to a crisp white suite and well-made bathroom units. Adding individual character to a contemporary bathroom can be injected with the smaller, finishing details. These finishing touches are just as important as choosing the right suite. Ceramic Tile Warehouse has over one million tiles in stock and would recommend glass, gloss or large format tiles to fit a contemporary bathroom look. Additionally, stone is a way of giving a modern bathroom a natural and elegant air and at the Stone Gallery there is a large choice of timeless stone. The flooring is also something to think about, as practicality will need to be considered. Simply Flooring can offer advice on stylish and practical slip resistant options. When designing a contemporary bathroom, sleek and neat suites and units work best and will add style and integrity to your bathroom interior. Angular suites and units can be utilised to incorporate interesting textures – from organic materials, such as marble and wood, to options of glass, concrete, metal and manmade high gloss products, which Park Street Interiors advises will enhance the overall look. Although contemporary style is not necessarily minimalist, clutter is an unwelcome addition to any bathroom, therefore storing cosmetics out of view in vanity cabinets and bathroom units will ensure that attention isn’t distracted. The passionate Art of Living Group team of interior design experts can help guide customers through the whole process of creating a contemporary bathroom. From helping with the initial design and maximising all available space, through to supplying the new suite, units, fixtures and fittings, they are there every step of the way. They can even assist with project managing the bathroom installation to ensure that everything runs smoothly and causes as little disruption as possible. Choosing A Theme For Your Kitchen

classic shaker style kitchen. The floor plan in a shaker kitchen is open, with cabinets often lining the sides of the kitchen. An island in the middle can make an attractive and very useful addition and can be created for you in classic shaker styling. This dignified, elegant kitchen is never excessive but nevertheless stunning to look at and work in.

Contemporary kitchens

The sleek look that comes hand in hand with a contemporary kitchen will provide instant gratification. The practical use of space allows for more movement in the kitchen and provides easier access to storage areas and necessary equipment as you prepare those mouth-watering dishes. Also, contemporary colours provide a more open feeling which adds into the functional atmosphere of the space. That is, in essence, one of the great benefits of contemporary custom kitchen designs; the array of options available. No matter what your exact tastes and preferences, there is a contemporary kitchen design that will meet all your specific needs.

French country kitchen

This look combines rustic country charm with a grand, chateau-like sophistication. Opt for units in an aged shade of parchment or dove grey featuring beautifully-turned, bevelled detailing. Team with natural stone or slate on the floor, black or cream enamel Aga, chunky wooden worktops and tiled splashbacks in earthy shades. This also works well with freestanding features, so choose an antique-style armoire for displaying tableware and an island unit with matching hood as a focal point. Hang copper pans on a black wrought iron pot hanger and accessorise the room with rustic oil bottles and richly coloured earthenware.

Shaker Style kitchen

The clean lines and rustic feel of a shaker kitchen means they appeal to those who adore both contemporary design and a classic look and feel. The round knobs, pillow-fronted doors and beautiful woods are features that epitomise the

Retro Kitchen

A retro kitchen is styled in a way that includes elements that imitate kitchen trends of the past. You might find psychedelic colours that hark back to the 1970s, or even appliances based on those found in American households of the 1950’s. Adding a touch of retro fun to your new kitchen can be a great way to give character to the space, and is sure to provide a few nostalgic talking points.

LAYOUT

Your kitchen should be designed for whatever you are likely to want to do in it. There are people who want to frame pictures, wash dogs, even do keep fit in their kitchens. If you’re remodelling from scratch and have a large space, think open plan and multi-purpose – somewhere to eat, work, cook and relax. Kitchen experts John Lewis of Hungerford advise thinking hard about your lifestyle. “The vivacious party animal” needs a U-shaped kitchen with island in the middle and open ended for social gathering, for example. “The Good Life fans” prefers a big L-shaped layout with a range-style cooker, large fridge and freezer and large farmhouse table. “The London weekday bolthole” needs galley-style layout with plenty of wall storage cabinets because most of the below surface cupboards are filled with appliances and gadgets. Meanwhile the “pony club set” loves a free-standing pantry offset to a wrap-around kitchen with peninsula and, of course, an Aga.

CABINETS

Cabinets are the workhorse of your kitchen, so always push your budget as far as possible. Think practically as well as aesthetically when it comes to the finish (highly

polished dark colours show fingerprints easily, for example) and remember, neutrals stand the test of time more than bold colours which, incidentally, rarely work in small kitchens. You can always apply brighter colours to the walls or splash-backs (glass is effective). Don’t neglect handles – they can make or break a kitchen. Hettich and Hefale have a good selection with timeless clean lines and if you’re feeling flush, Valli & Valli have handles to die for. Small handles generally don’t work, but chrome is effective and never dates.

WORKTOPS

Avoid wood near sinks or you’ll become a slave to re-oiling, and be warned, glass worktops quickly look tired and scratched. Consider twin-edged worktops that look like glass, but are laminate. Corian is good for the seamless look. Designers say there’s nothing they can’t do with it – sinks of the same material, coved upstands and so on. Granite remains the top worktop choice. There are so many more materials at similar prices to the ubiquitous black. For sinks, stainless steel is best. For taps, the tri-flow system provides filtered water. For cheaper ways to get the wow factor, mix and match your worktops – for example, quartz and stainless steel – or vary the depth of work surfaces.

KITCHEN FLOORING

To put on a fantastic floor show, do your homework first. Start by looking at the construction of your existing floor and make sure it’s suitable for the type of flooring you’ve got in mind. Heavy materials such as stone or terracotta tiles need a solid concrete base. If you’re laying a floor over wood, go for lighter materials such as lino, vinyl or wooden floorboards.

Vinyl flooring

Comfortable and warm underfoot, vinyl is one of the most cost-effective flooring options and comes in a range of colours and patterns. For a durable surface that won’t fade, choose a vinyl with the colour running through - those with surface patterns tend to develop a patchy look over time. Your supplier can advise you on the correct grade for your kitchen and, if you have the budget, have it installed by a professional, as badly fitting vinyl will peel at the edges. To keep it looking pristine, sweep it regularly and clean with a non-abrasive cleaner.

Stone or slate

Consult an expert if you’re thinking of using stone or slate on a kitchen floor as its porous nature means it can stain easily. It’s also one of the most expensive floors you can buy, but it will add value to your home. To reduce the risk of staining, go for the less porous slate rather than marble or limestone and make sure you have it professionally sealed. Look at travertine too – a natural stone made in Italy from calcium carbonate. It has a pitted appearance, comes in many colours and stands up to most cleaning products, making it the durable choice. If you have kids and pets running around, natural stone may not be the best option for you.

Laminate is a great, cost-effective option that creates an authentic, real wood plank effect at a fraction of the cost of the real thing. Laminate

This is a great, cost-effective option that creates an authentic, real wood plank effect at a fraction of the cost of the real thing. These days, you’ll also find stone and ceramic tile effects too. Laminates are tough so they’re ideal for busy households with lots of traffic in the kitchen. To create the appearance of real wood floorboards, choose a laminate with bevelled edges that form a v shape between the planks when they’re butted up together. Even better, this flooring is designed to be clicked together so there’s no need for messy glue and you can even lay it yourself if you’re a competent DIYer.

Hardwood

A real hardwood floor is expensive, but will add value to your home. Treat it with a Polyurethane finish to make it easier to maintain and clean. Wipe spills up quickly though, as any water sitting for a length of time on the floor will result in warping. Unlike laminates, if your floor gets damaged, you don’t have to replace the boards – you can simply sand them down and treat them again.

Ceramic tiles

A popular choice for kitchens as they come in so many colours, textures and patterns allowing you to create your own unique look. You can even use a central colour and create a tiled border all around to frame the floor. Remember though, you need a solid concrete base for tiles as floorboards would shift underneath and cause cracks to form. Ceramic can be cold underfoot so consider installing underfloor heating. So you can create your own dream kitchen!

SHOWER POWER Five top tips for dealing with showers. By Julia Gray, Press Association

Mira Adept BRD+ thermostatic mixer shower, available from mirashowers.co.uk.

1. There are three main types of shower: power, electric and mixer. Power showers are ideal for homes with plenty of hot water, as they take stored hot and cold water and mix it together to create the desired temperature. A built-in pump boosts the flow of water, creating a powerful spray, even if you have low water pressure (a tank-fed, gravitybased water system is required). 2. An electric shower only needs cold water because it heats the water as you shower and so will work even if the boiler isn’t working. These showers are great for homes with limited hot water and will work with any plumbing system. “Electric showers come in a range of kilowatt ratings - go for nine kilowatts or above, as you’ll enjoy a better flow rate,” says Emma Foster from Mira Showers. 3. Mixer showers need a supply of both hot and cold water, and blend them to the required temperature. Mixers are either surface mounted or have valves buried in the wall - the former are usually easier to install, as they fix to the tiled wall, but hidden valves often look nicer. Foster says: “Go for a mixer shower that offers thermostatic control to ensure the temperature stays constant, even when the toilet is flushed.” 4. Digital mixer showers control the flow and temperature of the water digitally, so you can have exactly

2 2 OCTOBER 2 0 1 5

the same showering experience every time by setting personal preferences. “You can set a maximum and minimum flow rate, as well as temperature,” says Foster. “A digital shower can even be programmed to switch off after a pre-set time, should you have teenagers who spend all day in the shower. Digital showers also have an electronic display that can show the temperature, flow rate and time.” These showers can often be controlled wirelessly from another location, so you can turn the shower on to warm up before you’re even out of bed. 5. If your shower produces little more than a dribble, an electric shower pump should make it more of a deluge, but pumps aren’t compatible with all boilers or the answer for all homes - a power shower is sometimes better. In some older properties, it may be necessary to replace the pipework, especially the pipe bringing in water from the main in the street, to improve the water flow rate. A better boiler and/or hot-water cylinder may also be the answer ask a good heating engineer for advice.

The Truth About

Condensation

in UK Homes, & Whether or Not Replacement Double Glazing Eradicates it

Have you started noticing condensation on your double glazed windows? Double glazing condensation can occur the outside pane of glass or elsewhere on the window. Naturally this can be alarming, particularly if the windows or doors are new, but it is not necessarily something to be concerned about.

T

here are many factors causing condensation but double glazing will never eliminate it. For example, where new double glazed windows have replaced old single glazed windows such as old crittall windows or single glazed timber windows you may be surprised at the presence of condensation. After all, double glazing is supposed to eliminate condensation isn’t it? The presence of condensation may also be particularly evident in the Autumn. But why is this,

7 6 OCTOBER 2 0 1 5

what is condensation and should your new aluminium double glazed windows even be allowing double glazed condensation in the first place? All windows will condensate in some way. You must never believe any double glazing salesperson that says “our windows will eliminate condensation”. This is untrue and completely misleading. New windows can never completely eliminate condensation. What new double glazing will do is improve the current

amount of moisture until they dry out completely. Consider how exposed to the elements the building was during its construction and until it was sealed by the roof or windows. Over 6000 litres of water are estimated to have been absorbed by a typical dwelling during its construction. Heaters are also a cause of moisture in the air. Breathing whilst we sleep is well known to produce several litres of water vapour during the night. Drying washing indoors are also significant sources of water. Single panes of glass found in old single glazed windows simply cannot retain any heat. As the glass has a lower temperature this lets moisture in the air condensate on the cold surface. This is why single glazed windows condensate. By comparison, double glazed windows offer two pieces of glass and therefore retain the heat inside the room. Old double glazed units were simply two pieces of glass with an air space. These still let out some heat but performed better than single glass. Modern double glazing with sophisticated glass coating technology, high specification sealants and spacer bars and the presence of argon gas between the two pieces of glass all substantially reduce the loss of heat from inside the room.

Single panes of glass found in old single glazed windows simply cannot retain any heat level of condensation on your old windows. This is because the thermal properties of modern aluminium frames and the high specification of modern double or triple glazing will be far superior than single glazed windows and non-insulated frames. All the modern aspects of today’s windows play a part in reducing condensation but nothing can eliminate it. The presence of condensation is down to several factors, but the main ones are how we live in our homes and what we do that causes moisture in the air. Modern buildings are now very well insulated both in their construction and of course windows. In older buildings that are less well Visit insulated air flow changes are more frequent. In modern www.tinyurl.com/ buildings the water vapour that condensation-advice causes condensation is unable to download the to escape through old windows, booklet chimneys or the structure and has to settle on the first cold surface. This will often be the windows but Condensation can also be on bathroom tiles or walls. The bottom line is that water vapour is the cause of condensation It is modern life and the advances in construction products that all play a part in causing condensation in the home. Here are some common causes of double glazing condensation: Simple cooking and the steam generated from pots on the stove all generate water vapour. New build properties contain a huge Advice to consumer reference 50.1 mAy 2013

some causes, some advice.

Therefore the presence of condensation is unavoidable in our dwellings, but there are of course steps you can take through adequate ventilation combined with sufficient heating to reduce it as much as possible. In fact, fitting thermally efficient double glazing can make an existing condensation problem worse if the room(s) in question do not have enough heating and ventilation to reduce the pre-existing propensity for condensation. There is always the possibility of some condensation forming on double glazed windows. Condensation on the outside of double glazed windows is nothing to worry about, as is condensation on the inside of the window (other than the latter is rather annoying as sometimes small water pools form on the window cill). However, if the area in between the two glass panes is misting up or showing signs of moisture then the sealed unit is failing and should be investigated to see if it has “blown” and therefore lost its thermal efficiency.. Condensation on the inside of your windows may be a sign that there is excessive moisture in the air, aside from the inconvenience of having condensation, you should consider what effect this could have on the plaster work and wood in your home. As previously stated, ensure that there is plenty of ventilation flowing through your home, as well as enough warmth from your heating system, and this will go a long way to reducing condensation. “The one thing that is very apparent is that the general public get very little advice about buying the correct bed”

T

he historic converted barn known as ‘The Bed Centre’ may be a familiar landmark for regulars passing down the A281 through the village of Bramley, but the extensive range (and, more importantly knowledgeable advice) that lies within may come a surprise to most. This family business has more than 75 years’ experience helping customers get that perfect nights sleep. Owner Gary Ewmett takes pride in selling long lasting solid timber bedsteads, in oak, ash, mahogany and cherry wood. He says that the thing that sets the Bed Centre apart from others is the personal service it provides. “The one thing that is very apparent is that the general public get very little advice about buying the correct bed.

We spend time talking about the individual requirements our customers may have to make sure they purchase the right bed.” Clearly that extra bit of effort has paid off. The majority of the business is from recommendations from previous customers. The Bed Centre has built up a solid client base and offers a free delivery service and is also able to dispose of your old bed for you, which go to recycling. It specialises in individual pocketsprung, memory foam and coil sprung beds and mattresses and also has a selection of children’s beds and bedroom furniture. Sofa beds, mattresses and pillows are also available. “While the majority of the younger customers prefer bedsteads” Gary says, “there are many customers who still prefer the classic divans beds. But whichever bed you opt for, the golden rule is the same - take your time over trying the mattresses before making your choice”.
