Top musicians

to perform at annual Windsor Festival

Philharmonia Orchestra, Orpheus Sinfonia and violinist Vadim Repin included in this years’ line-up

W

indsor Festival, the highly respected annual arts festival, will be located within and around the grounds of Windsor Castle taking place from 18th September 2016 to 2nd October 2016. This year the Festival programme observes three significant anniversaries: The centenary of the birth of Yehudi Menuhin, one of the founding artistic directors of the Festival, The Queen’s 90th Birthday and Shakespeare’s 400th anniversary. 2 6 september 2 0 1 6

Included in this years’ line-up are some of the world’s finest musicians. Highlights include: “Romeo and Juliet through Music” will take place on Tuesday, 20th September in St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle at 19:30. The work of William Shakespeare has stimulated composers throughout the last 400 years. In the magnificent surroundings of St George’s Chapel, the exceptionally talented orchestra Orpheus Sinfonia will bring their own abundant enthusiasm and energy to this fabulous programme, featuring some of the foremost examples of his legacy. The Carnival of the Animals is on 2pm Friday, 23 September at 2.00pm at Windsor Parish Church, High Street, Windsor This autumn the children’s concert will be given by the inspirational young orchestra Orpheus Sinfonia. Under the baton of conductor Thomas Carroll they will present one of Saint-Saёns’ best-known pieces, The Carnival of the Animals, during an interactive performance. This event is perfect for school-age children who will have the opportunity to get up close to the musicians and the music being performed. Through observation and questions they will learn about the sounds and colours of the orchestra, the different instruments being played, and the musical styles used to depict the fourteen animals featured in this humorous work. And they may even get the chance to take the reins and have a go at conducting! On Tuesday, 27th September, The Philharmonia, Windsor Festival’s Associate Orchestra visit us with the supreme violinist Vadim Repin in Centenary of Yehudi Menuhin: Bruch. The Philharmonia will perform Bruch’s Violin Concerto and a new overture written for Vadim Repin and the orchestra, and Beethoven’s masterpiece, the Pastoral Symphony in the Waterloo Chamber, Windsor Castle. Eton Boys’ Concert 8:15 PM Thursday, 29 September at School Hall, Eton College. The Eton Boys’ Concert showcases the extraordinary talent of Eton College’s leading musicians. For the next three years Eton is home to a substantial part of Malcolm Arnold’s personal archive of manuscripts. To mark the first year of this project the evening will include a performance of Arnold’s Brass Quintet No. 1, Op. 73. The concert will also feature the celebrated College Chapel Choir performing Purcell’s Jehova, quam multi sunt hostes, an outstanding young organist playing Handel’s Organ Concerto Op. 4 No. 2, and a performance of Dvořák’s Piano Trio No. 4 in E minor, Op. 90, B 166: Dumky. Frederico Colli, winner of The Leeds International Piano Competition 2012, will be performing together with the Philharmonia Orchestra in Eton College’s magnificent School Hall on Friday, 30th September. This concert opens with Tchaikovsky’s passionate and tragic overture followed by possibly the most well-known and revered piano concerto of all time, Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No.2.

Elgar’s Enigma Variations pay heartfelt and humorous tribute “to my friends pictured within”. Identified by the initials titling each variation, Elgar captures touchingly his wife, his many musical friends (and their pets) as well as his close friend and publisher, August Jaeger, the ‘mighty hunter’ of the celebrated ‘Nimrod’ variation. Martin Denny, Windsor Festival Director, said: “Windsor Festival aspires to be amongst the premier Music and Arts Festivals in the UK, playing an important part in the cultural life of our community and reflecting our special position as a royal town. We hope that you will see that this year’s programme echoes these sentiments and we look forward to attracting and delighting you with a fortnight of engaging festivities.”

The Philharmonia will perform Bruch’s Violin Concerto and a new overture written for Vadim Repin and the orchestra, and Beethoven’s masterpiece, the Pastoral Symphony

Ever since Hardy’s Wines founder, Thomas Hardy started producing wines in 1853, 6 generations of Hardys have been committed to continuing his legacy. History shows that Thomas Hardy first blended grapes from multiple regions in 1865. He believed that by doing so it would complement and enhance the qualities of each region. This Chardonnay is a continuation of Thomas Hardy’s philosophy of blending between regions, in order to create wines with a broader spectrum of flavours and enhanced balance. The wine displays the typically vibrant white peach flavours from Pemberton combined with wonderfully zesty, citrus flavours from the Yarra Valley to produce a full flavoured yet restrained and elegant cool climate Chardonnay. Enjoy now or cellar up to 5 years. £17.99

3. 2012 Reynella Basket Pressed Shiraz

The Reynella Winery is the site of the oldest wine business in South Australia, established by John Reynell in 1838. After passing through several hands, the Hardy family purchased the business in 1982. Hardys association with Reynella dates from 1850 when pioneer and founder Thomas Hardy, worked for John Reynell during his first six months in Australia. Reynella’s Basket Pressed Shiraz is a quintessential McLaren Vale Shiraz, a template if you will of what McLaren Vale wines aspire to be. Small parcels of vineyard specific fruit were carefully selected from the renowned McLaren Vale region. Boasting the bigflavoured style of McLaren Vale Shiraz but with surprising elegance, and raspberry and blackberry fruitiness. One of the few wines to be made using a basket press which gently presses the fermenting grapes extracting only the favoured soft tannins and rich flavours. Suite Dreams… B

rooklands Hotel, located in Weybridge, Surrey, boasts an iconic, art deco inspired interior. It features the world’s most historic motor racing track running through reception as well as a critically acclaimed restaurant in the appropriately named 1907 restaurant, bar & grill and luxurious spa facilities. Brooklands Hotel takes great inspiration from its racetrack history and location, from the original Brooklands racetrack, which rolls out before you in riven quartz and honed granite, to the glittering 1930s inspired honeycomb pendants that greet you upon arrival. The Brooklands site is home to one of Britain’s most famous racing heritage circuits – in fact it was the world’s first purpose built real race track, which opened in 1907 by wealthy land owner Hugh Locke King and was the scene of the earliest motor racing in the country during the 1920s and 1930s. Pride in the Brooklands historic location gave Brooklands Hotel the inspiration to name the restaurant after the year the famous racetrack was built and opened. Executive Head Chef, Adam Potten, and his creative team continue to design the predominantly British style menu using the best sourced produce and combined with modern cooking techniques this delivers simple, honest food. The ethos behind the grill is heritage and quality. The beef is sourced by selecting breeds

that come with the traditions of British farming at its heart. The steaks are then carefully cut in house straight off the bone, ensuring the cooking complements the history. 1907 restaurant, bar & grill recently retained two AA Rosettes for the third year in a row. The luxurious BSpa at Brooklands Hotel has recently invested in a state of the art outdoor hot tub on the balcony, which can seat up to 12 people providing incredible hydrotherapy and relaxation with venturi jets for deep tissue massage as well as a dedicated air circuit for soft tissue massage. A Hidden Gem

I

t is easy to miss the narrow blue door, squeezed in between the sports shop and the sandwich shop, on Godalming High Street, but step inside and you will find a fascinating and friendly museum in a surprising building. Despite its Georgian brick front, the timber-framed Wealden house has been on this site for over 600 years. The museum itself is slightly younger, having been established in 1921. It tells the story of the town and surrounding area in a series of innovative and well designed displays. The Living Landscape Gallery explores how the landscape and its resources have shaped life in the local area. Here you can see ammonites and other fossils, as well as artefacts from Prehistory and Roman and Saxon times. The main themes of the town’s story are laid out in pictures, artefacts and activities. Children will particularly love the irresistible train which illustrates the transport theme. The People’s Gallery showcases the life stories of almost 400 local residents, all nominated by members of the public because of their association with and contribution to, Godalming. Want to find out about the woman who gave birth to rabbits, Nobel prize winning scientists, an England cricketer by the name of Julius Caesar, the heroic

radio operator on the Titanic, musicians, artists and civil rights campaigners? Then this is the gallery for you. Godalming is proud of its association with Arts and Crafts gardener, artist and craftswoman, Gertrude Jekyll. Best known now for Edwardian country homes and gardens created with architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, she was credited in her day with “turning us into a nation of gardeners”. The museum displays her paintings alongside the work of contemporaries including Myles Birket Foster, Helen Allingham and Mary Seton Watts, as well as the banner she designed for the Godalming Branch of the National League of Women’s Suffrage Societies. The museum’s enchanting courtyard garden is based on a border Miss Jekyll created for Millmead in nearby Bramley. Here you can sit in the shady summer house, built to Lutyens’ design, and enjoy coffee or tea, or simply the scent of roses and honeysuckle or the unbelievable pompom flowers of Hydrangea arborescens Annabelle. Achieving Balance

David Boggitt, Deputy Head (Academic) at Cranleigh School

M

id-August always sparks concern over the strength and standard of our academics nationally, especially in the light of A Level reform. What do the league tables tell us? Are the standards slipping or set too high? What changes has the latest Minister made to cause the profession consternation? This year, at a time of increasing academic selection, competition and pressure on pupils to succeed, not to mention the largest wholesale changes to A Levels for some time, the debate has been stronger than ever. Yet seeing academic results in isolation from the rest of a young person’s development is inevitably doomed to failure. Cranleigh is not academically selective and its ethos has always been one of full participation, for all pupils, in all areas of school life. So whether they are outstanding academics, musicians, actors or athletes our pupils are likely to succeed in a broad range of activities. Every single pupil joins a team and gains the most enjoyment out of the time they spend on the pitch. When pupils are happy and enjoying the rich co-curricular life that Cranleigh has to offer, we strongly believe that they are most likely to achieve their potential, both in the classroom and out of it. Cranleigh was the only school in the country with National Finalists in three major sports for girls and boys at U18 level. Our top-performing athletes are also those pupils who did outstandingly well in the recent national examination results. Charlotte Calnan, playing for GB Hockey, scooped A* A* B at A Level; Ben Sackey, playing rugby with Harlequins, achieved A* A* A A; and Ollie Pope played cricket for England, scoring 86 runs the night before receiving his A Level results of A B C. All these students and many others at Cranleigh prove time and time again that it is perfectly possible to combine strong academic performance with excellence in other

2 september 2 0 1 6

areas. But at whatever level they perform, sport, music and drama help our pupils to remain totally engaged in school life, and when students are enthusiastic, positive and enjoying themselves there is no limit to what they can achieve. The spirit that is reflected in this year’s academic and co-curricular success is an attitude that spills over into work habits, leadership, teamwork and determination. It is the product of a school environment where everyone thrives on getting stuck in and a benefit that transcends exam success.

THE BENEFITS OF THE

W

ith options ranging from boarding schools to modern alternative curricula, there is almost certainly a school to suit each and every child. Here are some of the reasons why parents are choosing to give their children the unique experience of private school and why it’s worth the financial investment.

Enriched academic opportunities

researchers Bruce Biddler and David Berliner in 2002 showed that the smaller the class size, the better the average student performs on academic achievement tests. The gains from smaller class sizes are stronger the longer a child is exposed to them. Private schools vary greatly in size, but depending on their teaching style, almost all focus on the importance of small class sizes to individually help students’ weak areas and advance their strengths.

One of the accepted benefits of private schools is that they provide exceptional and challenging educational experiences through extracurricular activities, Advanced Placement courses, and the International Baccalaureate programme, just to name a few. The IB programme focuses on school work and on developing you as a whole person. Private school students constantly score top marks on standardized tests and college entrance exams, and many schools have a 100 per cent rate of students attending their university of choice.

Dedicated teachers

Controlled class sizes

Parental involvement

A comprehensive study on class size made by educational

5 4september 4 september2 02 10 61 6

In a study completed by the Fraser Institute in 2007, 91 per cent of parents surveyed said the dedication of the teachers was their main reason for choosing private school. Instructors are both qualified and passionate about their subjects, often holding advanced degrees in their field. Within the tight-knit school community, students have close relationships with their teachers who commonly act as role models. In addition, small class sizes make staff members more readily available for extra help or to further challenge individual students.

Private schools are built around open communication

INDEPENDENT SCHOOL between parents and administration, and they make it a priority to involve parents in the community. From frequent parent-teacher meetings, social events such as parent breakfasts and family camping weekends, and the participation of parent committees in fundraising initiatives, families become an integral part of the child’s education. This common ground also helps strengthen parent-child relationships.

A safe environment

Private schools have reputations for maintaining high standards for discipline and respect. Lower staffto-student ratios allow for more effective observation and control of school grounds. The strong sense of community found in private schools also discourages dangerous behaviour. In the Fraser Institute study, around 72 per cent of parents surveyed with children in the private school system strongly agreed that their school was safe, which greatly improves the quality of the child’s educational experience and achievement. The discipline they learn also improves their rates for success in post-secondary education when they are in control of their class attendance and achievement.

Ample resources

At private schools, you’ll find incredible resources to support student learning in the classroom, sports field, art studio, and beyond. Quality resources provide students with the opportunity to fully explore their interests and talents.

Extracurricular activities

While academics remain the priority for most private schools, many also place a strong focus on a well-rounded education and encourage participation in extracurricular activities such as sports, music, arts or clubs. This involvement helps stimulate students in their studies, as noted in a study at Stanford University that found that students involved in the arts are more motivated to learn and are three times more likely to win a school attendance award. Extracurricular activities can provide a much-needed break from the stresses of academics while developing skills and engaging in valuable social situations.

Development for today’s and tomorrow’s world

Private schools go beyond offering the mandatory subjects required by provincial curriculum; they can offer students a wide range of specializations including arts programs, athletics, maths and science. Private schools are responsible for producing many leaders in politics, business and society, with a history of adapting quickly to changes in technology and culture. And today, they are also sought by parents of children with special needs such as behaviour problems or learning disabilities. september 2 0 1 6 5

Flexi and weekly boarding

the popular options for children and parents When deciding on boarding options, increasing numbers of parents are choosing flexi or weekly boarding for their children.

B

oarding at an independent school falls into three categories; full boarding, weekly boarding and flexi boarding. Whilst full boarding involves living at school seven days a week and weekly boarding five nights a week, flexi boarding allows pupils to board for a few nights on days of their choice. Different schools operate their boarding in different ways, at Hurst College, the boarding community includes all three categories, with flexi and weekly proving most popular. Flexi boarding really is flexible, with pupils able to choose their nights even at short notice, while retaining their own bed throughout the term. As all pupils participate in co-curricular activities many find this particularly beneficial, as do parents who need to juggle a busy lifestyle. Hurst’s weekly boarders can stay Sunday to Thursday or Monday to Friday, removing the stresses of a daily commute and allowing more time for co-curricular activities and study. So what are the benefits of boarding? Housemaster Adam Hopcroft, said: “Boarding gives pupils a work-home balance. School life is busy, so boarding provides pupils with the chance to take part in extra-curricular sport, drama or music after school.” However the benefits of boarding extend far beyond the extra-curricular options. Adam believes boarding gives pupils an advantage academically. “Boarding pupils have more access to their teachers as well as their friends. Our pupils work in study groups during Prep and we make sure they are productive during this time. If they work well it allows them to have a more relaxed weekend.” The Lower Sixth girls in Hurst’s Martlet house agree. Flexi boarder Tori comments, “Boarding helps to structure home time because you get all

1 0 september 2 0 1 6

your work done in the boarding house and then home is fun time!” Hurst’s Lower Sixth students Ellie, Jess and Olivia describe their boarding experiences; “At Hurst the Lower Sixth don’t have to do work during Prep time, we can read in our rooms instead, but we do it then anyway because we’re already in ‘school mode’. Boarding changes the way you work.” Kathren Lea, Housemistress believes that a boarding environment gives students a strong foundation for their future. “With a mix of international pupils and flexi boarders the girls are making connections – and life-long friends - they wouldn’t normally make.” “As boarders children have to learn skills for life, which is preparation for their future. Our girls grow up in a supportive environment and it becomes their second home.” In the Upper Sixth, all pupils move into the co-educational house, St John’s, where boarders have their own single study bedrooms and the house ethos is based around preparing pupils for university. In modern families where both parents are working full-time and childcare is expensive, boarding means parents don’t need to worry about the school run every day and can be confident that their child is being well looked after. This leaves weekends free for quality family time. For children, boarding is a way to spend more time with their peers, be better prepared for the school day, instead of travelling to and from school and to take part in a range of extra activities. Hurst is becoming known as the school where you board because you choose to, rather than need to. “I live 10 minutes away but I board because I enjoy it”, said Megan in the Lower Sixth.

UK parents among

‘the strictest in Europe’

B

ritish parents are among the strictest in Europe after a study has revealed they are more reluctant to let their children play and travel unsupervised. Worried parents in England restrict their child’s ability to play and travel without adult supervision more than their European counterparts, the research found. The study revealed parents are mainly worried about the potential danger from road traffic and going out in the dark and it followed calls from leading teachers to expose children to more genuine risk. Researchers compared children’s independent mobility in 16 countries worldwide based on a survey of over

children to use daylight hours and prevent road deaths. Ben Shaw, Director of Policy Studies Institute, said: “ Allowing children the freedom to get about in their local area unaccompanied by adults has been found to be important for their health and physical, mental and social development. Yet we have found that children around the world have significant restrictions placed on their freedom to get about – to go to school, to visit friends, and get to places to play. “Children’s freedom of movement has declined in recent decades and danger from traffic is the main reason parents give for not letting their children out by themselves.

Researchers compared children’s independent mobility in 16 countries worldwide based on a survey of over 18,000 children 18,000 children aged 7 - 15 from 2010 to 2012. Carried out by the Policy Studies Institute (PSI) at the University of Westminster, it found that children’s ability to travel and play in their local area unsupervised by adults varies widely with England in seventh place compared to more lenient countries like Germany and Finland. The only European countries from the sample that allow children of any age to go out after dark are Finland, Sweden and Denmark, the study funded by the Nuffield Foundation revealed. Separately, England held the seventh place in the ranking, positioning parents as among the less lenient in Europe. The report recommended a reduction of car dependency and a change in Daylight Saving Time to allow

1 6 september 2 0 1 6

We are struck by how this significant danger and major restriction on children, is routinely accepted given the health and developmental benefits independent mobility has been shown to result in. “While restrictions on children’s freedom have increased, our research has looked at how this situation can be turned around. “We have found some shining examples of cities such as Rotterdam and Vancouver which have been inspired to place children at the centre of their development; on the basis that if a city works for children it works for everyone. “However, if the benefits of these approaches are to be enjoyed in the UK, the needs of children must be given much greater priority by decision makers working in the policy areas of planning, development and transport.

hoosing a school and navigating your way through the prep school years can be a challenging and confusing time. Society and the media often place much emphasis on academic and instant results and less attention to the pastoral development of the whole child. A couple of years ago, in response to questions parents asked throughout their child’s prep school journey, Merinda D’Aprano, Head of Notre Dame Prep School began writing an educational blog. The blog became a book, and joining ranks with Elizabeth O’Shea, a leading parenting expert, they have written a comprehensive guide to navigating the prep school years both educationally and pastorally. The launch of the book, Head Teacher in your Pocket: The Essential Guide to your Prep School Journey by Merinda D’Aprano, took place earlier this year to an attentive audience of Head teachers, educational publicists,

friends and family and was a great success. Merinda read an extract from the book and drew on her personal experience as an educator and Head in the Independent sector, and Elizabeth added her words of guidance as a parenting specialist. The book has already received critical acclaim from reviewers and attracted great interest in educational circles. Head Teacher in your Pocket: The Essential Guide to your Prep School Journey by Merinda D’Aprano is priced at £10.00 and available from Amazon bookstore. Made-up

to last

By Katie Wright, Press Association

Buy it now America’s number one skincare product has just landed on our shores, bringing intense hydration at attractive price points. The hero of Neutrogena’s Hydro Boost range is the ultra-light Water Gel moisturiser, £12.99 (Boots.com), which contains a unique hyaluronic gel matrix that sinks into skin and draws in moisture like a sponge, keeping your complexion looking fresh and healthy all day.

G

etting dolled up for garden parties, weddings and summer soirees is all part of the fun, but no one wants to be touching up their make-up constantly, because their foundation is battling against balmy weather (and losing), or their lipstick has jumped ship onto the rim of a champagne glass. In the face of such an onslaught, it’s time to bring out the big guns the products that will outlast toasts, tequila shots and even tears (happy ones, hopefully). These are the cosmetics that are quick to use but slow to fade...

BE PRIMED AND READY Essie Gel Couture in Top Coat, available from Superdrug

Preparation is everything when it comes to long-lasting make-up. Adding a primer to your prep routine gives your base an extra layer of defence: the silky, almost dry-feeling formula doesn’t sink into skin but it sits on the surface, meaning your foundation sits on top of that and won’t wear off as easily. This Works In Transit Camera Close-Up, £33 (LookFantastic.com), is a leave-on mask, moisturiser and primer in one, so it’s great if you’re travelling and don’t want to lug around a heavy cosmetics bag. Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield has been relaunched this year as a larger size Prince’s Trust Limited Edition, £69.50 (www.johnlewis. com; £10 from every sale goes to the charity). With SPF30 and blurring properties, this primer boosts your complexion inside and out. For infallible eye make-up, try a brush-on liquid like Arbonne Prime & Proper Eye Makeup

Primer, £21, which leaves an opaque base and makes your eye shadow all the more impactful (www.arbonne.com).

SET THE TONE

Once you’ve finished the rest of your make-up, a generous spritz of setting spray will create an invisible shield, locking foundation and blusher in place. Clarins Fix Make-Up, £23, is a cooling mist that contains moisturising aloe vera and anti-pollution actives (www.boots.com). Avon Magix Prime and Set Spray, £6, is a light and hydrating vitamin-infused formula that can be used as both a primer and finisher (www.avon.uk.com).

LOCK YOUR LIDS

For eye make-up that won’t crease or crumble, you need a highly pigmented formula. Guerlain Ecrin 1 Couleur Long Lasting Eyeshadow in Taupe Secret, £22.05 (Escentual. com), has a powder matte finish but the gel-coated pigments ensure the colour stays put. MAC Pro Longwear Waterproof Colour Stick in Bleached Out Beige, £16, is a twist-up crayon that’s chunky enough to sweep on all-over colour, but sharp enough if you want apply a concentrated dash, and it comes in 21 shades (www.maccosmetics.co.uk). If a smudge of pencil on the lash line is what you’re after, Clarins Crayon Khol Long-Lasting Eye Pencil With Brush in Smoky Plum, £15.40 (Escentual.com), is soft enough to blend but won’t budge once in place, while No7 Stay

TOP 5 BEAUTY BUYS

Perfect Liquid Eye Liner in Dark Chocolate, £8.50, gives dense, precision liner that dries to fade-proof perfection (www.boots.com).

SEAL YOUR LIPS

Whether you want sheer or full-impact colour, there’s a lip product that will linger as long as your need it to. Smith & Cult The Tainted Lip Stained in Sweet Suite, £20 (Net-a-Porter.com), may look muted on the wand, but it’s formulated to react to the pH in lips, bringing out a brighter (but still subtle) shade, that lasts even when the balm has worn off. For ultimate pout staying power, however, you can’t beat a matte lipstick. Yves Saint Laurent has just extended the Rouge Pur Couture The Mats range, adding warm, summer-ready shades like Wood on Fire, £26, to the line-up (www.debenhams.com). New to ASOS, Winky Lux Lip Velour, £13, comes in a host of jazzy hues, from bubblegum pink to vivid violet, and even black and blue (www.asos.com).

A UV-cured gel manicure is unbeatable for chip-proof nails, but some new beauty counter launches are giving the salon brands a run for their money. Essie’s new Gel Couture collection combines 25 shades with a tough-as-nails topcoat, for at-home colour that lasts up to 12 days. Essie Gel Couture in Spool Me Over and Topcoat, £9.99 each (www.superdrug.com). Nailed London has just released its Gel Colour Polish summer colours, meaning the hard-wearing collection now totals 28 shades. Try Coral Chameleon, £5.25 (FeelUnique.com), for a soft peachy hue.

At-home IPL devices don’t come cheap, but do they really work? Katie Wright puts one to the test...

“T

he Braun Silk Expert IPL Hair Removal System promises a reduction in hair after seven weekly sessions, and although it takes a bit of practise, it’s really simple to use and requires no charging. Skin must be clean, dry and fuzz-free (using any method you like) before use, then all you do is take the handheld device, place the sensor on your skin (making sure no light can get through), hold down a button and glide along your skin slowly. The device uses IPL (intense pulsed light) to zap the hair follicles every few seconds, and also has a button which provides a more ‘sensitive’ experience,

for use on the face or more delicate areas. It’s relatively pain-free and after the seven sessions I can see a noticeable decrease in the amount of hair growth on my legs. This system unfortunately won’t be suitable for all skin tones, and I think it will take me a few more sessions to get the results I want, but as far as home IPL goes, I’m pleasantly surprised.” Braun Silk Expert IPL Hair Removal System, currently reduced to £299.99 from £399.99 (Argos.co.uk)

The Ultimate Jowl Lift

Developed by the expert practitioners at the Light Touch Clinic, we’re excited to introduce the Ultimate Jowl Lift. This is a 3 step treatment which uses 3 of the best aesthetic technologies in the world: Coolsculpting, ULTRAcel and Silhouette Soft Thread Lifting. By combining these effective treatments, our medical practitioners can erase double chins and tighten your jowl area for a rejuvenated and defined jawline.

7 8 septemb E r 2 0 1 6

What Causes Facial Sagging?

Volume Loss: As we age, our muscles and fat diminish which can lead to facial sagging. Loss of Elasticity: Collagen and elastin production slows and skin loses elasticity as we get older which can contribute to sagging. In addition, UV damage can speed up the breakdown of collagen and elastin. Posture: Looking down frequently at mobiles, tablets and laptops shortens the neck muscles, accelerating the formation of jowls.

Want to learn more?

If you would like to learn more about this treatment, please contact the clinic on 01932 849552 and arrange a consultation with Janine Scott, our Senior Aesthetic Nurse.

Step 1:

Freeze the fat with Coolsculpting

The Ultimate Jowl Lift begins with our new Cool Mini CoolSculpting treatment. Using a process called cryolipolysis, our body contouring experts will gently draw the unwanted fat around the chin into a vacuum where it will be cooled for 45 minutes. Exposed to low temperatures, the fat cells become unstable and die. Over the next 3 months, the body naturally and permanently removes the fat cells.

Step 2:

Tighten sagging skin with ULTRAcel

Step 3:

Lift with Silhouette Soft • Multi-award winning clinic • Industry-leading results • Exceptional expertise with a team of medical practitioners, experienced aestheticians and a nutritionist • Award-winning treatments • CQC-registered

Finally, the Ultimate Jowl Lift is finished with Silhouette Soft Thread Lifting. This treatment involves our highly-trained medical practitioners carefully inserting biodegradable Poly L-Lactic Acid threads under the skin. These special threads have bio-directional cones along their length which will help lift sagging soft tissues. As well as holding the threads in place, these cones stimulate the body’s production of collagen to replace depleted facial volume. This results in a firmer, rejuvenated look.

BEFORE

AFTER

Why Choose Light Touch?

ULTRAcel is a revolutionary non-invasive skin tightening treatment which uses a combination of ultrasound and radio frequency to tighten sagging jowls. Firstly, your practitioner will use the radio frequency head to deliver heat energy to the collagen in the deeper layers of the skin. This causes the deep structures of the skin to tighten and, over time, new and remodelled collagen is produced. Your practitioner will next beam ultrasound waves to a controlled depth where thermal energy tightens and contracts underlying tissue. This stimulates the growth of new, healthy collagen for long-lasting and more intensive tightening. You will see an immediate improvement which will continue develop over the next 3 months.

Time to

up your

hair game I

t’s official, the ubiquitous topknot just won’t cut it any more, when it comes to piling your hair up: t his summer, up-dos come with an added twist. B ackstage at the spring/summer 16 shows, there was a big shift from ‘nothing’ hair to ‘proper’ ‘dos. But don’t panic; you don’t need hairstylist skills to ride the new up-do movement. The season calls for a more relaxed vibe, so imperfections, flyaways and wayward strands are all positively encouraged (phew). This is the perfect time of year to experiment with hair-up looks, according to Indira Schauwecker, Toni&Guy’s international artistic director: “Up-dos keep hair away from areas like foreheads and necks, that usually get hot and sticky in summer.Whether you’re doing beach, wedding or festival, you can just leave the style all day. The messier it gets, the better.” Time to up the hair ante for summer...

HAIR DECOR

Bling is the new thing when it comes to elevating a plain bun or chignon twist in seconds. Just add shiny broochlike accessories in random places. “Going heavy on the oversized jewels is a great way to transform an easy up-do into a statement look,” says Schauwecker. “Add height to the crown of the hair and keep the sides sleek and modern so it doesn’t look too fussy.” 8 0 septemb E r 2 0 1 6

BRAIDY BUNCH

Braids are your no-fuss style for summer, because they won’t budge. Take a French plait to the next level with a double-sided braid starting at your temples. Wear both braids down or pin them up completely using grips, so it’s more of a halo style. “Full braid looks will see you through swim, sleep and everything inbetween - it doesn’t frizz or spoil when you perspire, and looks even better when it’s worn in,” Schauwecker advises. “Try pulling the braid apart slightly with your fingers after styling, to create the illusion of fuller hair.” Hair kit: Redken Braid Aid 03 Defining Lotion, £17 (redken.co.uk); Michael Van Clarke Lifesaver UV Leave-In Styling Treatment, £19.50 (3moreinches.co.uk); Invisibobble Nano Hair Ties, £3 (topshop.com)

I’M WITH THE BAND

No matter whether you remember it from first time around, Nineties girl half-up, half-down hair is well and truly back - and it’s ideal if you don’t like your hair pulled off your face completely. “This look is cool and fun, but also really easy to recreate at home,” assures Schauwecker. “Faux side burns are another big trend at the moment so leave hair falling in front of the ears for a lived-in, relaxed look.” Keep things playful for summer with bold, bright hair ties that punctuate your look. Hair kit: label.m Texturising Volume Spray, £13.50 (labelm.com); Windle & Moodie Texture Cream, £15 (windleandmoodie.com); Toni&Guy Colour Me Happy Hair Ties, £10 (toniandguy.com); Superdrug Metal Free Hair Bands, £2.29 for pack of 18 (superdrug.com).

HAIR-UP HACKS

Still not sure about wearing your hair up? Schauwecker has this up-do advice: • Don’t be afraid to experiment. Play around and see what suits you - if it doesn’t work, you can take it down. • Whether you want glossy or lived in, use styling products to accentuate cool texture in your hair. • Focus on smaller areas of the hair where you can create pops of detail, whether it’s a braid, twist, or adding a killer accessory. • Experiment with height in your up-do, as this can really accentuate your face shape. • Give your hair an up-do treatment. If you’re wearing braids, use a leave-in conditioner before plaiting to moisturise and protect your hair all day. • For more hair-up help, visit Toni&Guy’s salon finder at toniandguy.com/salon-finder

Lisa Haynes sees the light when it comes to quick-fix facials

“I

must admit, I was a bit sceptical when I first heard about the ‘Express LED’ facial. I’m more of a 90-minutes floating on heated bed kinda gal, but this is little more than 10 minutes under a techy lamp. With plush grey chairs and vivid print cushions, however, the walk-in Light Lounge at Harvey Nichols London’s new Beauty Lounge, where I go to try the facial, feels more like a Kelly Hoppen lounge than a clinical treatment room. “There are two express options: Rejuvenation, using yellow light that hydrates and brightens skin,

or Acne Treatment, an anti-bacterial and skincorrecting treatment which uses blue light. After a quick cleanse and prep by the therapist, I sit under the yellow light to give my parched summer skin a bit of TLC. The light stations use LED wavelengths to activate skin cells, which is a catalyst for fighting infection and boosting collagen and hyaluronic acid. Granted, this isn’t traditional pampering, but, with my eyes closed and the light warming my face, I zone out for 10 minutes straight (rare for a selfconfessed iPhone junkie). “Lights out, the therapist rejoins me for a post-

LED facial in minutes, adding serum, moisturiser and SPF30. Afterwards, my complexion looks fresher and plumper and, the next day, I notice even my angry, red scalp looks calmer around my hairline. A course of treatments is recommended to really boost radiance, but with the speedy results on offer, I say, ‘Let their be light!” The Light Salon is located at Harvey Nichols London and Leeds. Getting Continental in the Bedroom

P

ost Brexit vote, it may seem a trifle odd to talk about European tastes, however we’re intrinsically linked to the continent by more than just a continental shelf and a thin band of bluegreen water. Within our shores are entrenched attitudes towards the very essence of being European, which are much more about style and lifestyle, than political persuasion. Just glance at our high streets with cafés spilling onto the pavement, fashionable people dining al fresco, drinking espresso and enjoying petits fours, to appreciate we’re more European than we might first consider, however taking a deeper view of our own homes, it may surprise some to understand how much European style we surround ourselves with and ultimately take for granted, as it’s become virtually innate after centuries of influence. Head2Bed is an online bedroom emporium that understands the demand for European styling in the home, with beds, wardrobes, mattresses and accessories that complement one another, have European design built-in, as well as European manufacturing quality and safety. Head2Bed’s bed ranges are designed and made in either Switzerland or Italy, under the Hasena, Quarrata Qualita’ or Veneran Italia brands, to the highest manufacturing standards. Wardrobes are by Stylform (Germany), luxury mattresses by Yatsan (Turkey), Relaxsan

(Italy) and Concept Memory (Great Britain!).

The Beds

• The Hasena range is vastly flexible, allowing an almost infinite combination of headboards, frames and legs, with materials in many types of solid wood, laminate and glass, and upholstery in leather or fabric, meaning an individual style can be achieved. • The Quarrata Qualita’ range of beds is selected carefully to provide only the most sumptuous designs, with deep upholstery and incredible build quality, putting a very modern twist on some very traditional manufacturing methods. • Veneran Italia is a relative newcomer to the range, yet it’s been a phenomenal seller this year, with incredible, sleek styling, floating effects and subtle built-in lighting. Even their laminate woods are solid, using first choice timber from sustainable sources, actually sourcing wood from the same trunk!

Trust

BE IN THE CLEAR The amazing amount of Red Tape involved in replacement windows and doors in flats

F

lat owners or tenants in a block of flats (or people you know who live in a flat) should be advised to think very carefully indeed about replacing their windows or indeed their entrance door, as they probably won’t be aware of the minefield they are entering. The first thing they need to do is read their leaseholder agreement, then find out about the planning regulations that apply to all flats, any particular fire regulations in relation to their doors, and the specific rules that apply to

9 2 september 2 0 1 6

their particular block of flats. For example if the entrance door to the flat is a door within a door (i.e. one accesses the internal corridor to the flat via an external communal door), then any replacement front door must under the law be fire rated to protect the flat owner and all the other occupants in the block of flats. The length of fire rating required is determined by your local Fire Officer. This means one cannot fit double glazed aluminium, timber or UPVC doors that have plastic gaskets as these

can give off fumes if they melt, so none of these types of door will achieve the fire rating required. Approved and tested fire doors are usually solid hardwood slabs or steel doors with no plastic gaskets. Both these door types are expensive and it is important to research things thoroughly before splashing out on a replacement door. If the replacement door installer does not confirm in advance that they will on installation provide you with a certificate

No flat owner should replace any window without first making sure they’ve got all the necessary permissions as proof that the door has a one hour fire rating (which is the usual requirement) before you pay a penny, best walk away from the deal. Likewise no flat owner should replace any window without first making sure they’ve got all the necessary permissions, as they can end up having to pay out a fortune compared to what the replacement windows cost them in the first place, so what they should do is make sure they get all the approvals needed in writing before ordering any windows. Be aware it is the flat owners sole responsibility to find out what planning permission(s) are required from the local authority, whether the flat is in a Conservation Area or not. In addition, each flat owner needs to obtain written permission from the freeholder and/or the Management Company. If you are a tenant in a block of flats and want to change your door or windows the minefield is larger and more dangerous for you as you’ll need planning permission, your landlord’s approval and permission from the Management Company, so watch your step! The reason councils in England require planning permission is that no flat in any block of flats has any Permitted Development Rights, so crazy as as it sounds, flat owners do not have the right to change their windows or any outside door without first obtaining planning permission. This is partly so the council’s planning department keeps control on the types, materials and designs of the products being replaced. The council will most probably want replacement windows and doors to be “in-keeping” and to be of “similar appearance”. A potential grey area can occur between what some flat occupants think of as similar, and what council planning department considers similar. Each local council has the

right to force flat owners to replace and pay again for any doors or windows they’ve not had planning permission for to change. Financially this can mean a massive expense (especially if the flat in question is on the 2nd floor or above and has had internally beaded windows fitted from the inside the first time round), if the council requires the flat owner to remove the replacement windows and replace them a 2nd time round with externally beaded windows to match the other externally beaded windows already preexisting in other flats in the block. The reason being that 2nd floor and above windows can only be replaced legally and safely by the use of compliant scaffolding, which in itself can work out more expensive than the replacement windows on its own. English Councils are not slow to issue Planning Enforcement Notices to any flat owner they come across (or are told about by other flat owners) who change their doors and/or windows without planning permission. Whilst retrospective planning permission can be sought, there is no guarantee the local council’s planning department will grant this, and more often than not adds even more costs before eventually one has to replace all the replacement doors and windows for the second time anyway. Flat owners can also get into hot water by not getting written permission from the Management Company, as this can lead to time consuming on-going disputes with both them and other flat owners, and often can lead to a real problem the time comes to sell the flat, as the Management Company can hold up the sale until they have been pacified. The optimum scenario before you buy or rent a flat is therefore to choose a block of flats where modern low maintenance thermally broken doors and windows already exist throughout, so you benefit from their energy efficiency, improved sound insulation and avoid you having to pay the Management Company periodically each time for your flat’s proportion of the scaffolding and redecoration costs. at COUNTRYWIDE PIANOS

C

ountrywide Pianos has been proudly serving both the local and wider community since 1986 and we have developed from small beginnings to become the largest, premier showroom in the SouthEast of England. The piano’s magical sound is created by the player pressing any one of its 88 keys, which creates a note. This happens through a complex hammer-on-string mechanism, which needs to be perfectly regulated and tuned. In the 1900’s a piano which played by itself, by reading a punched out paper roll, was all the rage. Today pianos are sophisticated musical instruments, which may not only play themselves but can be enhanced by full orchestral and vocal parts – in essence providing a live orchestral performance in your own sitting room. Today the punched out paper rolls have been replaced with the very latest digital technology, incorporated within a real acoustic piano, which can be played as a regular piano. Seeing, however is believing and a visit to Countrywide Pianos for a full demonstration is recommended. Our showroom is an array of both new and pre loved pianos with a price range to suit all pockets -from the upright piano to the very largest of full size concert grand piano, self player pianos, ‘Silent’ Yamaha pianos, together with the ultimate in electric digital pianos, you really will find it fun making your choice and for those who may need assistance there is always help and advice on hand. Being perfectly located just 35 minutes outside of

Crown-ing glory as new show site unveiled

C

rown Pavilions, Britain’s number one creator of outdoor garden rooms and gazebos, takes the wraps off its show-stopping new site in Denham on October 1 - the result of a six-figure investment. Partnering with Tendercare, the award-winning garden nursery in Uxbridge, Crown Pavilions will show off its finest outdoor buildings in one location for the first time and is inviting locals to come and see for themselves how its bespoke oak and cedar rooms can transform their gardens. Crown Pavilions already has an incredible reputation for its craftmanship, with celebrities such as Duncan Bannatyne, Alan Titchmarsh and Gloria Hunniford vocal in their praise. “Crown Pavilions can really change your life,” said gardening guru Titchmarsh. “These

fabulous buildings manage to extend the use of your garden at both ends of the year.” Boss Luke Dejahang is extending an open invitation to everyone to help celebrate the grand unveiling at the site “We are delighted to have found a partner in Tendercare who cares as much about the great outdoors as we do,” said Luke. “Our show site will be show-stopping - a complete look at the best buildings Crown Pavilions has to offer. “Naturally we want to celebrate this with as many people as possible, so we’re extending an invite to everyone in the local area to attend. They’ll see Crown Pavilions garden rooms and gazebos in all their glory and there’ll be some incredible offers to boot.” With prices starting at £7,000, Luke says there’s never been a better time to invest in the garden. “The last couple of months have proved that the weather can have a big impact on our lives but it’s very much a case of ‘if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em!” he said. “Our garden rooms enable everyone to enjoy their garden all year round and our 30-year guarantee gives peace of mind too.” Oxfordshire-based Crown Pavilions has been making gazebos and garden rooms for more than a decade. The south east is a huge hotspot for the company which has recently unveiled sponsorship of the exclusive St George’s Hill Tennis Club in Weybridge. Luke said garden rooms and gazebos are increasingly

being seen as the ultimate must-have outside the back door. “Our customers’ needs have changed in the last few years - many don’t want to move or extend as they’ve already done that, so they’re looking to make the most of the garden instead,” he says. “It’s pretty much the last area that’s in need of a makeover. “Forget the rickety old summer houses of yesteryear - nowadays people want all the tech they enjoy inside the house to be on-hand outside too. “We focus very much on quality and longevity - we use the finest materials (Canadian cedar, Cumbrian slate) because our garden rooms are significant investments. They’re insulated, heated, secure extensions of someone’s home and our customers want their personality to be reflected in their building too.”

TRANSFORM YOUR HOME

I

n the past when families grew or their circumstances changed, they would move home to accommodate their changing needs. Today it is not as simple as that. Rising house prices, a limited supply of good schools, transport links and the increasing cost of moving house, a growing number of people are choosing to stay put and invest in their existing property to cater for their changing requirements. In the Surrey area, the value added to the property usually always outstrips the cost of the works necessary to renovate and extend the house. While many people go straight to a builder to start the process, discerning clients characteristically appoint an architect to establish a more bespoke and professional approach, where aesthetics and functionality are at the core of the process. Concept Eight Architects has a decade of experience, specialising in private residential projects, the majority being end user clients. Each project brief is unique with the end result being a truly bespoke and customised house designed around the family’s key needs. In recent years, Concept Eight have seen a rise in clients undertaking full house renovations, where the layout and design of the home is significantly altered from the original house. They have transformed Victorian cottages into generous family homes, 1970’s houses into open plan contemporary homes, modest mews houses into large subterranean residences. These renovations allow for some character to be retained while other areas are radically transformed.

9 8 september 2 0 1 6

Obtaining planning permission is a key milestone in any successful home renovation or extension. A good knowledge of the relevant planning policy of the borough is essential. Each borough approaches residential developments and extensions in a different manner so selecting the right approach not only enables an optimized scheme with a high chance of success for approval. Many clients can be time poor so this approach is essential to ensure an efficient design program. Concept Eight Architects are based in Surrey and know the local planning policy well. This allows for schemes to get consent first time around in most cases. Often a more complex approach is suitable, requiring a mixture of planning permission and permitted development applications. Each approach offers challenges and opportunities and getting the correct blend requires careful consideration. The end result of a scheme can be made up of a mixture of approvals or a single approval, dependant on which are most likely to offer our clients what they are looking for in terms of changes to their homes. If 2016 is the year that you transform your home, feel free to contact them and pop into their local studio, where they would be delighted to advise how they can assist in the process of creating your new home. and a unique design, is how they are able to execute their strong independent character and lasting perfection. Steininger Masterpieces are brought to life in their headquarters in Upper Austria, where the company was founded over 80 years ago. Martin Steininger started learning about carpentry at a young age in his father’s workshop. However, it soon became clear that skilled handicraft alone was not enough for him. Martin began studying new production techniques, refining materials and seeking to make contact with notable designers and architects such as, Adolf Loos and Joseph Hoffmann, during which time, his style grew and matured immensely. Award Winning

Halo Design Interiors Of Weybridge

Create a Wow Factor Home for a Family of four in Cobham

A

ward winning Halo Design Interiors of Weybridge, who design interiors for Premier League footballers and Royalty and headed up by Blanca Sanchez, were brought in to extend, configure and refurbish the internal spaces of this 1980’s detached family home on a private road in Cobham for its owners, who are friends of another Halo client who had previously introduced them to each other. The client was keen to generally update their family home, and open up the back of the house to the garden and give a sense of openness and light to the main living room that they spend most of their time in, as a family. The client preferred a calm, fairly neutral palette, so we were very careful where and how we introduced colour and warmth to the new scheme. The first and main thought and focus was to open up the kitchen, which is located at the front of the property, by removing two walls and creating a large eat-in and entertaining kitchen that can be enjoyed and used every day, as well as for dinner parties. Once the two kitchen walls were removed to open up the kitchen into the living and dining space, the refurbishment was straight forward. We chose a white kitchen door scheme and white walls to give the space a zen like feel. Whites and golds were continued in the open plan living and dining areas which give all three spaces a sense of continuity as well as the odd pop of colour that can easily be changed at any time. The rest of the property had impressively large rooms which had to be furnished with size appropriate furniture 1 0 4 september 2 0 1 6

which was to scale, so in some rooms we designed bespoke pieces where we needed to, to fill space and give each room a sense of purpose, for example in the drawing room and master bedroom. In all there is the large open plan kitchen diner and sitting room, a formal drawing room, a home office and a playroom all on the ground floor. All four bedroom suites are located on the first floor. As all the bedrooms already had en-suites, it was just a case of upgrading those rooms so the whole house was updated. Additionally, the off white ground floor tiles were carried out onto an extended rear raised deck for a great in out flow. The whole project went smoothly. It always helps and speeds things up when the clients are not living in the property during refurbishment. Naturally, we visited site as the renovation progressed and kept in regular contact with the contractor, ironing out queries as they arose, ensuring that things always ran smoothly and kept our client updated on progress. Personally, my favourite room is the drawing room and the lobby leading off it.

The client wanted the design based on a particular artwork, which we presented to her The client wanted the design based on a particular artwork, which we presented to her; but we also presented another design alongside it, based on a completely different colour scheme and artwork which we felt would work better in the overall project, and the client decided to go with that. The room is based on a colour scheme of deep blues, freshened with off whites and touches of soft gold.
