The Savoy’s unparalleled standards of luxury, comfort and service caused a sensation when it opened its doors in 1889. Richard D’Oyly Carte, the theatrical impresario who built The Savoy, wanted his hotel to set standards, rather than follow them, an ethos to which the hotel has proudly adhered throughout its history. 125 years later, The Savoy continues to set the highest of standards as it prepares to celebrate its longevity and success this August. ‘Lose Yourself’

at the London Design Festival

Now celebrating its twelfth year, the Festival aims to celebrate and promote London as the design capital of the world, and as the gateway to the international creative community. The theme for this year is ‘Lose Yourself’, inviting visitors to indulge in 300 events and installations in the many locations, activities, destinations and experiences on offer.

A

major part of the London Design Festival’s programme is the presentation of Landmark Projects. This year, the Festival has commissioned a major project in Trafalgar Square in collaboration with Airbnb*. Four highly acclaimed designers have been invited to dream up their interpretation of a room within a home that you would not want to leave. These rooms will be created as four separate structures in Trafalgar Square, all identical on the outside, with each ‘house’ interior reflecting the individuality and personality of each designer. The creations will be open to view from Thursday 18th-Monday 22 September. The Festival will continue its unique collaboration with the world’s leading museum of art and design, the V&A, and will again house a broad range of commissioned activity which will be spread throughout the Museum and include installations, events, talks and workshops. Designers, Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, have collaborated with BMW to create a remarkable and memorable experience in the V&A’s Raphael Gallery. Barber & Osgerby have designed ‘Double Space for BMW’, a kinetic sculpture that creates an immersive experience for the viewer. Barber & Osgerby have long been fascinated by aerospace, automotive and maritime engineering and their V&A project reflects this interest. Two mirrored silver structures will be suspended in the centre of the gallery and will epitomise BMW’s own technological innovation and precision. The choreographed movement of the giant structures will distort the view of the Raphael cartoons on display, the architecture of the room and the viewer’s perception of the space. In 2014, there are six official design districts during the Festival. Each district is organised locally and independently with endorsement from the London Design Festival. The districts now comprise: Brompton Design District The Brompton Design District in South Kensington is the longest standing, comprising of temporary exhibitions as well as a variety of product launches and installations in the local cluster of design shops and galleries, all within walking distance of the V&A. Participating partners include The Conran Shop, Skandium, Cassina and Squint, amongst others. Late night opening on Thursday 18th September. 12 AUGUST2014

Chelsea Design Quarter The Chelsea Design Quarter is made up of interior design showrooms located in and around the southern end of King’s Road and Lots Road, including Lapicida, John Cullen Lighting, Roca Gallery, The Rug Company and more. Participating partners will be staging demonstrations, workshops, talks, debates and exhibitions, with a specific programme of events taking place here on Monday 15th September.

Clerkenwell Design Quarter Clerkenwell Design Quarter is hosting the first Clerkenwell architecture and design film festival Films on, about or with a tangential link to architecture and design willbe screened throughout the Quarter, and for free, in showrooms and destinations not usually associated with film. Late night opening on Tuesday 16th September.

Islington Design District Just to the north of Clerkenwell, the Islington Design District launches this year, bringing together a collection of design-led shops, showrooms and cafes including SMUG, Aria, Folklore and Coexistence. Visitors will be able to walk the Islington Design District trail from Angel through to Camden Passage and Upper Street, and discover new designers, special product launches and one-off events. Late night opening on Tuesday 16th September.

Queens Park Design District Queens Park Design District, new this year and led by Bill Amberg Studio, will be launching a flag design project that will adorn Lonsdale Road. Design studios and showrooms along the street will stage events, including Georgina Goodman, The Water Monopoly, Michiko Koshino and Rupert Bevan. Party day/evening on Saturday 20th September.

Shoreditch Design Triangle The Shoreditch Design Triangle brings together a collection of local designers, stores, galleries, studios, cafés, brands and one-off events for a week of design-led festivities. Design store SCP is coordinating the district for the sixth consecutive year and will be hosting an exhibition of Japanese design that celebrates cross cultural exchange, sameness and difference. Late night opening on Tuesday 16th September.

ZANDRA RHODES WEDDING DRESS II

RENE BOUCHE BRITISH VOGUE

Drawing on Style THURSDAY 11TH - TUESDAY 16TH SEPTEMBER 2014

RAY M.C.A leading specialists in Fashion Illustration are holding a selling exhibition of original illustrations from Post War 1940s 1970s. Coinciding with London Fashion Week SS15, the exhibition will include more than 40 original works by some of the leading illustrators of the time including René Bouché, René Gruau & Carl ‘Eric’ Erickson for publications including British & American Vogue, Harpers & Queen and The Sunday Times, as well as advertising work for L’Oreal and other famous names in Haute Couture such as Nina Ricci. There will also be a selection of original designs by designers including Dior, Barbara Hulanicki of BIBA & Zandra Rhodes. Prices will range from £300 - £10,000. As Connie Gray of Gray M.C.A explained: “For too long fashion illustrators & their illustrations have been seen as a secondary art form, no matter how beautifully executed the image. More often than not, fashion illustrators were more widely known for their advertising work than they were for their work as highly skilled fashion illustrators. Though their style was familiar to the reader & their names published internationally alongside their illustrations, they have never been recognised as true artists. Tragically, few original fashion illustrations survive today. Those that have survived have become internationally collectable as original & historical art works that truly caught the elegance, attitude and style or the time.” The 1940s & 1950s saw the heyday of fashion illustration. Illustrators such as ‘Eric’, Bouché & Draz were constantly in demand & are considered to be the masters of fashion illustration. They brought a realism to their work and were appreciated & admired in all the leading publications of the time. Their early working drawings were often more exciting than the final published work. They were often freer, fresher & more spontaneous and would represent the artist behind the picture before it became too over worked for publication. A 1940s Ink & wash by Erickson, which was an original project for American Vogue titled Awaiting To Embark carries a price tag of £4,000. 16 AUGUST2014

GALLERY 8, 8 DUKE STREET, ST JAMES’S,

LONDON

As the 1960s took hold & the youth culture democratised fashion, fashion illustration began its sad decline & although illustrators remained in demand from the leading journals of New York, Paris & London, photography challenged almost every aspect of the fashion illustrators work, particularly magazine covers. The media demanded an ease of reproduction. This could only be achieved by photography. Yet illustrators stayed true to form and continued to receive commissions that were sustained by their knowledge acquired in the life class at art school. British illustrator Eric Stemp (1924 - 2001) was a master of the elegant fashion illustration. His work was commissioned for British Vogue continuously from 1955 - 1963. His precise line made him a favourite with the editors. An original fashion drawing of model Sevilla Hercolani from the 1960s in charcoal has a ticket price of £2,500. In the 1970s, fashion illustration once again became a vital form of expression that allowed the viewer to be caught up in the magic of fashion illustration. British designer Dame Zandra Rhodes (1940 - present day) is recognised as one of the new wave British designers who put London at the forefront of the international fashion scene in the 1970s with her unique use of bold prints, fiercely feminine patterns and theatrical use of colour. She continues to design for the rich and famous around the world from royalty to rock stars. In 2003 Zandra set up the Fashion & Textile Museum, dedicated to showing the work of fashion and textile designers from the 1950s onwards. In 1997 she was made a Commander of the British Empire in recognition of her contribution to fashion and textiles and in 2014 she has been awarded the highest accolade of Dame. Three original designs for Wedding Dresses dating from 1972 each have a price tag of £750. Public Opening Hours Thursday 11th September - 10am - 8pm Friday 12th September - 10am - 6.30pm Saturday 13th September - Tuesday 16th September - 10am - 6.30pm

B

everley-Jane is an award-winning artist living in St John’s Wood, who has worked passionately and ardently for many years developing her unique style which looks in intricate detail at being a Jew in a multicultural Britain. Her early work shows London life scenes and the relationship of buildings to people. With this work she received The Artist Book Club Award and the Evening Standard/Evening News Art Award for London at Play. In later years she has concentrated on Synagogue services, her unique style of figurative painting combined with the splendour of these buildings makes these services come alive. More recently her work goes beyond the buildings, linking the synagogue with local history and community. The historical association of being an immigrant and contributing to British society is heavily researched applying the past to present. She sees herself as a visual writer

expressing facts with emotions shown in bold colours, strong lines interwoven with her personalised figurative style. Whilst Beverley-Jane has kept a relatively low profile whilst her children were growing up, things are about to change with her first solo exhibition coinciding with European Jewish Heritage Week! Beverley-Jane Stewart has an honours degree in Education and Art from London University and later was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. Beverley-Jane’s first solo exhibition, ‘Spirit Recaptured’ takes place at Trinity House, 50 Maddox Street, London W1 1AY. The exhibition is then set to move to Trinity House New York in early 2015.

Now in its 19th year, it is Britain’s largest outdoor classical music event and a rousing finale to two months of world class music-making at the BBC Proms. Earth, Wind & Fire’s musical legacy spans over five decades and since 1969 has produced floor-filling hits including Boogie Wonderland, After the Love Has Gone, Let’s Groove and September, sold over 90 million albums worldwide and won eight Grammy Awards. Founding members Philip Bailey, Verdine White and Ralph Johnson will take to the Hyde Park stage in a live set that promises to get everyone dancing and into the Last Night of the Proms party spirit. Earth, Wind & Fire say: “The Proms in the Park has a magical legacy. We are honoured to now be a part of the history and to celebrate. ‘September’ has always been special for us...we will see you then.” Joining Earth, Wind & Fire is AmericanCanadian singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright. Wainwright, who has written his own opera, set Shakespeare sonnets to music and composed for the ballet, will perform with the BBC Concert Orchestra. Rufus Wainwright says: “I have played the Royal Opera House, Drury Lane, the Palladium, the Hammersmith Apollo and many other amazing venues in London but never the Proms. My debut there in September will definitely be one of the big artistic highlights of my career. I cannot wait to return to the Royal Albert Hall and to be taking part in the Proms in the Park celebrations in Hyde Park the same week!”. Rising star of the classical music world, South African soprano Pumeza Matshikiza, also joins in the Last Night celebrations for the first time. Marking the 50th anniversary of the legendary Walt Disney film Mary Poppins, the nationwide sing-along will this year include a medley of songs made famous by the film arranged specially for the occasion and led by Sakari Oramo and the BBC Symphony Orchestra in a live video link-up from the Royal Albert Hall. 26 AUGUST2014

Saturday 13 September 2014

The nautical flavour of Ansell’s Plymouth Hoe (and its brief quotation of Rule, Britannia!) forms an upbeat to the traditional Last Night favourites, led by baritone Roderick Williams.

Royal Albert Hall, SW7

The Last Night of the Proms celebrations spill out of the Royal Albert Hall into all four nations of the UK. Each BBC Proms in the Park event has its own popular line-up of artists and presenters, and culminates in a live link-up with the Royal Albert Hall for the second half of the concert, transmitted on BBC One. Highlights of the Last Night 28 AUGUST2014

The Royal Albert Hall could be filled many times over with people wishing to attend the Last Night.

Tickets are almost as hard to come by as Centre Court passes for the Wimbledon finals, but the whole thing is broadcast live on the BBC - and all round the world. For full details and ticket availability please visit: bbc.co.uk/proms

“When you travel a lot it’s great to be able to sing on your own back door step,” says Jem. “Our families and friends are always asking what we are up to and how the shows are going and bringing the tour to Richmond will give us a great opportunity to show off to them again,” he jokes. “We are really pleased with this show,” explains Scott, “We wanted to go on the road with one that was even better than our last. This is a great challenge after 12 years of singing together, but we are confident that the audience will love our versions of Something’s Coming from West Side Story, Bob Dylan’s Make you Feel my Love, Falling slowly from the musical Once, as well as popular classical must haves, the Pearl Fishers duet, Nessun Dorma, O Sole Mio, alongside some self- penned titles and many more. “Being local has enabled us to call on the services of the fabulous new Surbiton based Arnould Girls Choir directed by Rebecca Gresson,” enthuses Jem. “I heard them singing at the Richmond Music Festival this year and I was amazed at their pure sound and beautiful harmonies and I thought we must sing with them if we get the chance….the fact that my daughter is in the choir is a lucky bonus!” “We will also be raising money for the wonderful Holly Lodge Centre based in Richmond Park.” says Paul proudly. “The Holly Lodge offers all children the chance to experience our beautiful Richmond Park in a fun and educational way and we have been patrons for about ten years now. Being fortunate enough to be able to support both these local elements is very special and we enjoy doing it when we can.”

Start the new term on the right foot, with Cubs Shoes Positioned in the heart of Hampstead and Wimbledon Village, Cubs Children’s Shoes Shop has been a step ahead of competition for ten years and is still standing strong.

C

ubs was opened in 2004 by Jenny Ho, a local mother with a young son, with the simple concept to provide expert care in fitting children’s shoes. She felt there was a need for a friendly shop which understands the importance of well fitted and comfortable shoes, particularly to see kids through the school year. The friendly staff are all shoe –fitting specialists, with some having trained for ten months to gain the accreditation from the Society of Shoe Fitters and the Children Foot Health Register, and are on hand to provide a personal, relaxed and friendly environment for the children. Stocking over 30 top children brands from the UK, Europe and the USA, they specialise in their ‘back to school range’ along with trainers for sport lessons, casual shoes, fashion shoes, party shoes, boots, sandals, wellies, ballet shoes, slippers and many more! Cubs are never short of a design, and have something for everyone.

Whether you are looking for the classic Start Rite school shoe, or a Geox for the gym class, Cubs can cater for your child’s shoe size and width. Dependent on the style, the store stocks from new born to Eur 41 (UK7) for girls, and new born to Eur44 (UK 10) for boys. With width fittings range from E – H to ensure a comfortable fit. The Cubs experience also sets the store apart from the chain, with in-store teddies for children to play with, along with stickers, balloons and various gifts for each guest. A trip to Cubs is exciting for the entire family to get your little tikes set for the new term ahead. Emerging Artists - with a difference! Oil&Water Contemporary Art Gallery in Old York Road, Wandsworth Town is giving us an unusual opportunity to evaluate some very promising young artists, striving to make their names as professionals in an unforgiving world. According to gallery director, Penny Macfarlane, ‘it is gallery policy to encourage young artists. Their names may not yet be known to the general public, but I am confident that they will make their mark on the future. Two have already had works selected for the BP Portrait Award, and for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition’.

W

hat makes this exhibition different is that all the artists have studied at the Charles H Cecil Studios in Florence; a world renowned atelier which teaches traditional classical art and draughtsmanship in the way of the Old Masters. Fundamental to this teaching is the practice of drawing and painting from life, and the ‘sight-size’ technique; a philosophy of seeing, whereby subject and image are depicted to scale as seen from a given distance. Charles Cecil believes that the atelier tradition is invaluable for the renewal of figurative art. The results - as demonstrated in the portraits, sculptures and paintings that will be on view at the gallery in August – are stunning. Penny invited artist Jamie Vaulkhard to curate the exhibition. Our Arts correspondent (?Nicola Drew...) managed to track him down at his studio in Talgarth Road. Jamie says that it is not always easy for aspiring artists to find a gallery willing to show their work. Particularly having trained abroad, the London art scene is difficult to fathom. He hit upon the idea of gathering together a group of friends and acquaintances whom he had met in Florence, to stage their own show. Nicola asked Jamie what was so special about the Charles Cecil Studios. He said: ‘I don’t know of anywhere else where I could have 40 AUGUST2014

received such a thorough training. The school not only gives a great technical foundation but more importantly it teaches one to observe and work from life. It is this philosophy of seeing that is the real legacy that we are all trying to realize.’ If you wish to see the work of these young professionals, aiming to be the Masters of the future, or if you would like to commission your own portrait in charcoal, oils or bronze, visit the Oil&Water Gallery this August. This is indeed a unique opportunity to identify and admire the work of some of our most promising figurative artists, under one roof. A new exhibition at the Oil&Water Contemporary Art Gallery 340 Old York Road, Wandsworth Town, SW18 1SS Thursday 7th - Saturday 30th August Open daily 10.30 am - 5pm, 8pm on Thursdays, 4pm Sundays For further information or invitation to one of the private views, on 7th and 19th August contact gallery Director Penny Macfarlane on 07725 189825 or penny@oilandwater.co.uk

Don’t forget to vote for your favourite artwork! ‘The Great British Fish and Chips Bridge’ - a 3D model - now taking centre stage within Tower Bridge Exhibition, the masterpiece is the winning entry to this year’s national ‘Design A Bridge’ children’s competition, by eight-year old Toby Ayres from Harlow in Essex. To celebrate Tower Bridge’s 120th birthday year, the creative design has reinterpreted the Bridge as a ‘homage’ to the all-time classic British meal including popping tiny peas on the top of forks, Union Jack flags and dollops of tomato. An architect in the making! To book tickets, and for the up-to-date ‘Ask the Techie’ summer schedule please visit www.towerbridge.org.uk.

AUGUST2014 51

THE WORLD’S MOST DISTINGUISHED VEHICLES

M OTO R I N G L I F E

Defining luxury Not all cars are created equal, to borrow a theme from George Orwell. Some are built for speed, some are built for economy, others are built for capacity. Then there are those built for luxury. What is it about luxury cars that appeal to us so vividly? Cars are an investment in status, image, ego, perception, and of course indulgence.

P

remium and luxury categories are always an interesting one from a branding perspective because, arguably, the power and lure of the brand itself is stronger than elsewhere. A true luxury brand doesn’t have to advertise. People – the right people – will know. A true luxury brand has license to add another zero to the price tag because price just isn’t important. It’s the brand that you buy into. The whole experience is designed to enhance and reinforce the customers’ expectations of buying into a luxury brand. You’re not just buying a car, you are also feeding your own expensive tastes. You might be yearning for a British classic like a Bentley, a Rolls Royce, an Aston Martin, a Daimler, a Jaguar or an MG. Or if your tastebuds are tickled by those with an international flavour, then a Bugatti, a Lamborghini or a Porsche is for you.

Safety Luxury cars usually tend to have more safety features than most other cars. Manufacturers spare no expense when it comes to fitting the very latest and most effective safety features. It was luxury models that were the first to be fitted with power steering and airbags, and they continue to lead the way in terms of driver and passenger safety.

Resale value Everyone knows that the moment you drive a car off the forecourt, it loses a huge percentage of its value. People simply do not want used cars as much as they want new ones. Except, that is, when it comes to luxury 52 AUGUST2014

models. Thanks to the build quality and future classic status, most luxury cars tend to hold on to their value much better than other cars, making them a much more sound investment.

Interior comfort The whole point of a luxury car is the added comfort. The drive should be smoother, the engine quieter, the seats more comfortable. It should be like flying first class every time you get into the driver’s seat, except seeing as you probably spend more time in the car than on a plane, it works out much better value.

Gadgets and technology Like safety features, luxury cars tend to regularly break new ground in terms of technology… fitted with the state-of-the-art gadgets and devices that are years away from being fitted as standard. All of which makes driving easier and a more pleasurable experience. Luxury cars are also paving the way in terms of environmental impact.

Prestige Luxury cars have the head-turning wow factor. There’s no denying it and no denying the fact that this is why we love them so much. Everybody wants to look good when they’re driving their car, there’s nothing wrong with that. Ultimately, it’s a combination of all these factors and more that make luxury cars so desirable. They are the complete package – speed, safety, looks, technology – which is why they continue to be so popular. After all, luxury is supposed to be what driving is all about.

HEAD OF VW GROUP DESIGN CONFIRMS NEXT HYPERCAR IS ON ITS WAY. AND IT WILL BE ‘ART’

G

et ready. The head of Volkswagen Group design confirmed to TopGear.com that work on the next Bugatti model is well underway, with an expected launch in early 2016. Walter de Silva, who has headed up VW Group’s design since 2007, said “we’re working hard at Bugatti, but don’t worry, it’s coming. I cannot predict exactly, but at the end of 2015 or early 2016, we’ll see the new Bugatti.” De Silva wouldn’t confirm exactly what form this new car would take, but did concede that it “won’t be a Veyron replacement, it’ll be more than that. We’re investigating all avenues at the moment”. He remained confident, however, it will be something incredible. “For me, Bugatti is not a car,” de Silva said, “it is a piece of art. You have to understand this. You are in another range when you talk about Bugatti. No, forget that, you play in another league with Bugatti. When you buy a Bugatti, you buy a piece of art. It’s a story, and I would like to transfer the Bugatti idea in this way.” Tech-wise, again, de Silva remained tight-lipped, but did say how the company is putting “a lot of attention in the technology for the new

54 AUGUST2014

Bugatti. We’re developing a few different concepts at the moment, working together with the engineers and designers at the same time. Bugatti is something that in the end is a car, OK, but it’s a car that is a lifestyle. Bugatti is a part of your sensitivity, of your feeling,” de Silva added. So what do we know, then? Earlier this year, Bugatti boss Dr Wolfgang Schreiber told that the company would not build a ‘SuperVeyron’ or indeed a production version of the 2009 Galibier concept (pictured above). “We have talked many, many times about the Galibier, but this car will not come because it would confuse our customers,” Dr Schreiber told us. “With the Veyron, we placed Bugatti on top of all super sports car brands in the whole world. Everyone knows that Bugatti is the ultimate super sportscar.” Whatever this new car is, it will have to ‘redefine the benchmarks’, he added. And let us not forget, those benchmarks have been set just about as high as possible… Watch this space! www.bugatti.com

CELEBRATES 100 YEARS OF PRESTIGIOUS MOTORING

aserati officially celebrates the hundredth year of its history this year. The company was founded in Bologna, Italy, on December 1, 1914 and officially started operation on December 14, 1914. Alfieri Maserati and two of his brothers, Ettore and Ernesto, had an interest in mechanics and a love for speed. Though predominantly engaged in technical and commercial matters of car production, they all, at one point, raced the company’s cars. A fourth brother, Bindo, joined the company when Alfieri died in 1932 and a fifth brother, Mario, is credited with designing the famed Maserati logo, taking inspiration from the Neptune fountain in the historic centre of Bologna. Maserati produced its first car, the Tipo 26 racer, in 1926. It debuted with a victory in the 1926 Targa Florio, the first of many illustrious wins including two Indianapolis 500 victories, nine wins in Formula One and the 1957 F1 World Championship. In 1947 Maserati produced its first passenger car, the A6 Grand Tourer in 1947. In 1963, with the first generation Quattroporte, Maserati carved a new niche of sports luxury saloon. Over the past 100 years, Maserati has also produced some of the world’s fastest and most desirable sports and luxury road cars. The company have been running a series of activities to celebrate the centenary, culminating with the official Maserati gathering in Modena from 19th – 21st September 2014. About 250 Maserati models from all over the world will convene in Modena before embarking on a series of routes on scenic Italian roads tied to Maserati’s history, as well as many racetrack sessions. During the second half of next year, Modena will host a major exhibition of some of the most evocative models in Maserati’s history at the Museo Casa Enzo Ferrari in the city.

THE LATEST GENERATION OF THE QUATTROPORTE

56 AUGUST2014

This summer’s award-winning Silverstone Classic hosted a glittering line-up of special races, displays and parades to celebrate the centenary of Maserati, one of the most historic and hallowed motoring marques in the world. Working closely with Maserati GB and the Maserati Club UK, the 100th anniversary festivities at the Silverstone Classic were the biggest in the UK and one of the largest marque celebrations in the world. “This is a very special year for Maserati and a wonderful opportunity to look back through our history and celebrate the milestone achievements from the last ten decades,” said Peter Denton, Region Manager, Maserati North Europe. “The Silverstone Classic was the perfect occasion to bring together a full spectrum of iconic Maserati models, both past and present. Giving Maserati aficionados a unique chance to see so much of our history in action, as well as introducing a new generation of drivers to the models that have defined and continue to define the Maserati brand as we enter our next 100 years.” A dedicated Maserati Centennial website – www.maserati100.com – is live now to keep Maserati’s friends, fans, clients and collectors informed of all the activities planned to celebrate the 100th anniversary. There’s also a special centenary section on the company’s official website including details of the marque, from its establishment in 1914 to the present day, via memorable cars, famous names, a timeline of the most important events, the biggest projects, the innovations and the many achievements in motorsport. The content includes downloads, while visitors can also vote for their favourite Maserati of all time. A book to celebrate the centenary, Maserati – A Century of History, charts the company’s century along three main themes: company history, model range and motorsport.

MG CELEBRATES

90 YEARS

Britain’s favourite classic sports car name reaches its 90th anniversary this year.

T

he first MG went on sale in 1924, when founder Cecil Kimber registered the company as a car manufacturer. And what better way to celebrate than to bring some classic MGs together with the brand’s current cars, and see how far it has come?

Today, MG is owned by the SAIC Motor Corporation, and MG’s 90th anniversary year continues to be one of unparalleled success for the iconic marque, with breaking sales every month so far in 2014. This year is already MG’s best ever sales year. Success has been due to the recent launch of the MG3 supermini and expansion of the MG6 diesel powertrain family, with a new 129g, 350 Nm performance diesel recently added. The MG6 is already a favourite with MG owners for its drivability, affordability and exceptionally high levels of equipment included as standard. To celebrate 100 years, MG will be the featured marque at Simply Classics & Sports Car being held at the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu, on Sunday 24th August. MGs of all ages will be on show from early VAs and TAs to the ever popular MGB and Midget as well as modern classics such as the MGF and MG TF plus the current MG3 and MG6 models, with displays from regional MG clubs and individual owners plus trade stands.Advance booking for the event guarantees MG clubs their own dedicated area with space for cars and a gazebo or event shelter, while individual MG owners can reserve their place in the special MG Paddock. Gates open from 9.30am on the day.

MG Clubs and MG owners can book their place in advance by email to: events@beaulieu.co.uk or telephone: 01590 614614. London Calls Out For Mg MG has appointed its first dealership in London as part of a major expansion of the marque’s network. MG West London, situated in Barnes, has become the first MG Motor UK sales dealer within the M25 area. The site in Castelnau, is one of the best known automotive landmarks in West London and has previously been home to The American Car Centre and is now trading as West Motor Company. Ardi Bala, Dealer Principal of West London MG, said: “We are thrilled at being appointed an MG dealer and everyone here looks forward to showing people the MG6 and MG3. I’ve driven both cars. The build quality is superb and the value-for-money is quite exceptional, which I don’t think people yet fully appreciate.” The immediate surrounding areas of Barnes, Putney, Richmond and Chiswick are key target areas for sales of the new MG3 supermini. At just four metres long, the MG3 boasts class leading cabin and boot space yet is easy to handle in even the smallest of urban areas, with the top of the range model available for under £10,000. Not to be outdone by its smaller stable mate, the highly equipped MG6 TSE is also equipped for urban life with front and rear parking sensors, reversing camera, Bluetooth and builtin sat nav as standard. westlondon.mg.co.uk

The World’s Greatest

Driving Event

T

he Bucket List, the movie starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, was such a big box office hit because its theme was simple but inspirational – live your life by drawing-up a wish list of the things you’d like to do before you “kick the bucket,” then get off your backside and go do them! The exhilarating driving activity we’re going to introduce you to here is definitely one for that list. Most of us have dreamed, at one point or another (even if only in the optimism of childhood), of driving a racing car fast around a track. Sounds like wishful thinking, yes – but this is one of those dreams you can turn to reality. There is an easy way of getting yourself into a racing car, in fact several types of racing car, and driving around a circuit safely but quickly. Very, very quickly, as hard and as fast as you like. The place where these dreams come true is PalmerSport at Bedford Autodrome, within easy reach of London. A corporate hospitality driving event, PalmerSport is also open to private individuals. Created in 1991 by someone who lived the dream, ex-F1 driver Jonathan Palmer, it is widely acknowledged as the best experience of its kind in the world. Palmer had four separate circuits built at Bedford Autodrome so that they can be used concurrently, ensuring that PalmerSport guests get plenty of track time with very little waiting. There are six miles of track in all, some parts tight and twisting, other sections fast and flowing, with spacious ‘run-off’ areas to ensure the safety of drivers who overcook it. Guests get plenty of seat-time in an unrivalled variety of driving

64 AUGUST2014

machines, from humble karts and growling high-performance road cars through to thoroughbred racing cars. A brief look at these cars explains why the event is so highly rated. The bare-essentials Aerial Atom combines a skeletal tube-frame chassis (no roof, doors or windows) with a screaming Honda engine. The agile Caterham 7 Superlight is the perfect car for mastering the art of drifting. The BMW M3GTP, stripped of interior luxuries, is powered by a race-bred 4-litre V8 tuned by BMW’s Motorsport division. The Formula Jaguar is a single-seater racing car powered by a stonking 3-litre V6 developed by legendary F1 engine-makers Cosworth. The Palmer Jaguar JP-LM, also Cosworth-powered, is an open-top Le Mans-style two-seat racing car in which guests benefit from having a race instructor sitting alongside them. And the Land Rover Defender, in contrast, is meant to be driven slowly – but on an extreme off-road course with steep slopes, rock-strewn paths, and deep rivers. The eight-activity programme at PalmerSport features friendly instruction from experienced racing drivers, live timing boards, scoring, team and individual awards, first-class hospitality, and in-car videos for guests to take home afterwards. It is telling that the majority of PalmerSport’s customers, corporate and private, are people making a repeat visit. That’s how enjoyable the experience is. Visit www.palmersport.com to find out more about a driving experience so exhilarating that you’ll remember it until that fateful day when your foot finally makes contact with the proverbial bucket.

Luxury Innovations

When you buy a new car in 2014, it might be that little bit more special than the previous one you owned, but is it really going to be anything revolutionary?

I

t may well have a built-in satnav and screens in the back of the headrests, but that’s nothing truly remarkable. It might have automatically dipping lights, automatic emergency braking and other safety-related technology: again, they will become standard on even base models.

So if you want to make sure you’re on the first wave of real, luxury technological innovations in the automotive industry, what do you need to be looking out for? Go Green or Go Home You may have taken steps to limit your effect on the planet in other areas of your life, but when it comes to cars, very few people have taken steps to shift over to electric cars. Although high cost prevents many from purchasing a smart new electric or hybrid vehicle, if you have the money, there’s really no reason why you shouldn’t indulge. In the coming years, we will begin to see transductive charging available in electric cars, meaning that your battery will charge wirelessly through the road. All this makes the electric cars of the future an attractive proposition. Driverless Cars If Google stay on track, they’ll have driverless cars on the road by 2017. Ask yourself: what could be more luxurious than not having to drive at all, ever again? Although the thought of not being in control of your own vehicle sounds intimidating, the amount of data being used to

66 AUGUST2014

ensure the driverless technology is reliable equates to around 40 years of driving experience in a human, so it is likely to be something that you can trust. Regardless of the cost, this is certainly something you should keep an eye on. Intelligent Data Where and When You Need It Road signs are not always located in the best place, and sometimes you can drive past one without observing it and then it’s gone. There is a lot of technology becoming available that tracks your car, monitors its performance, gives you advanced warning when things might be going wrong and if you do happen to break down, your car could call the AA for you, tell the patrol what’s wrong so he can ensure he has the right parts and keep you up to speed with when he will arrive and what his name is. In the future, though, rather like Google glass, windshields will be intelligent, and able to display an array of important information such as navigation data, warnings of hazards ahead, your emails/phone messages (when you aren’t actually driving of course) and – when cars go driverless and you don’t have to focus on the road – they’ll likely display entertainment, too. This means you can actually enjoy yourself. As you can see, there are a number of technologies that are set to bring a revolution of luxury to your automotive experience.

PREPARING FOR A

GIANT PRODUCTION

James Haddrell, Artistic Director of Greenwich Theatre, prepares for a sell-out production of Jack & the Beanstalk

W

hile temperatures start to rise, schools break up for the summer and people head off on holiday, in theatre land thoughts are turning to Christmas. Whatever the show, the Christmas period is an incredibly important one for theatres, and for us it means one thing – pantomime.

There are theatres around the country where the pantomime season runs for weeks and weeks, and brings in so much money it pays for much of the rest of the year. That may not be true for us, but it remains an important part of our annual programming, and the time when we have our biggest audiences. We play to around 90% capacity with most shows selling out, and about a third of our annual audience come through the doors in just six weeks so it’s the time for us to pull out all the stops and show audiences what a spectacular show we can produce. Pantomimes vary hugely from theatre to theatre. There are the large-scale productions led by celebrity names, offbeat adaptations, adult pantomimes, but at Greenwich we pride ourselves on presenting one of London’s classic traditional pantomimes. The old traditions, the recognisable characters, the famous stories will all be there, but the one thing you won’t find in a Greenwich Theatre panto is a big celebrity. For us, that’s not what pantomime is all about. Spending a large percentage of the production budget on an actor from a soap, or a big radio presenter or a film star just doesn’t seem right for us, so instead we concentrate on putting together a cast of some of theatre’s finest young 68 AUGUST2014

and established musical theatre performers – and that’s what we are doing right now. Auditions always remind me how lucky I am to work in this industry, spending a series of days with our writer/director Andrew Pollard and our musical director Steve Markwick, listening to fantastic actors sing and read through scenes, and then having the privilege of trying to put together the jigsaw – which Jack goes with which Jill, which actor will make the best dad for Jill and the best comedy partner for the dame, which villain is going to scare the audience just enough while still being funny. Ours is a pantomime full of high energy dance routines and pop songs that both the adults and children will recognise, so at the same time we have to decide which actors are going to be able to sing the latest chart hit, and then a minute later turn their attention to an old favourite by a band like Queen. Of course this year there’s one character that we won’t find through auditions, and that’s the giant. Theatres tackle the giant in all sorts of ways. At some productions there will be a booming voice, or a set of giant props, or even just some miniature puppet versions of the cast to make everything else look huge. However, if there’s one thing I can confidently say without giving anything away, alongside an exceptional cast we may have just lined up the best giant in pantoland… Jack And The Beanstalk plays at Greenwich Theatre from Thursday 20th November. he Savoy’s unparalleled standards of luxury, comfort and service caused a sensation when it opened its doors in 1889. HISTORICAL TOURS OF THE SAVOY In celebration of The Savoy’s 125 years since its opening, historical tours with The Savoy’s archivist are available as part of the events and master classes calendar at 4pm on the first Monday of every month from 7th July 2014. To book a third night suite stay, please call 0207 836 4343 or email svy. reservations@fairmont.com HISTORY OF THE SAVOY Back in 1246, a stretch of land between the Strand and the Thames was presented by Henry III to Peter, Count of Savoy, uncle and consort to the King’s wife. Peter built his Savoy Palace on the river, and the name has been associated with the place ever since. Over 600 years later, impresario Richard D’Oyly Carte chose the location for a new theatre to stage the famous operettas written by his friends Gilbert and Sullivan. He decided to call his new building the Savoy Theatre, and the productions were known henceforth as the Savoy Operas. Gilbert and Sullivan were huge on both sides of the Atlantic, and D’Oyly Carte spent a lot of time producing their shows in America. This meant he could stay in some of the newest and best hotels, which impressed him so much with their amazing new technologies that he decided to build his own hotel back in London. The new Savoy on the river took five years to build and opened on 6th August 1889. It caused a sensation. This, the first true luxury hotel in London, was also the first to be lit by electricity. It had the first electric lifts, known as ‘ascending rooms’. Guest rooms were connected by speaking tube to the valet, maid and floor waiter – and to other parts of the hotel. The Savoy later became the first hotel to provide most of its rooms with private bathrooms en suite. The ‘Savoy bathroom’ became famous for its cascading shower and quick filling bath. Originally managed by Swiss hotelier César Ritz and Maitre Chef Auguste Escoffier, the hotel quickly became known for its glittering parties and glitterati guests. For more than a century, Savoy Court was the stopping point for the Rolls-Royces of royalty, prime ministers and Hollywood stars. The stars loved The Savoy. England’s own Vivien Leigh was first introduced to her future husband Laurence Olivier in the hotel’s Front Hall. From America came Hollywood greats such as Al Jolson, Errol Flynn and Katharine Hepburn and from France, Josephine Baker and Coco Chanel. Winston Churchill frequently lunched with his cabinet at the hotel during World War II, and attended his Savoy dining club, The Other Club, until his death in 1965. The new Elizabethan age saw a new generation of actors, film stars and politicians at The Savoy. Among the most glamorous: Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren and Marilyn Monroe. The Savoy swung into the 1960’s with guests ranging from Louis Armstrong, Marlon Brando and Jane Fonda to The Beatles and Bob Dylan. The Savoy’s prestigious reopening on 10th October 2010 included the addition of a stately 325-square metre Royal Suite featuring two bedrooms, a study, sitting room, dining room, master bathroom, dressing room and a master bedroom with a bespoke Savoir bed, the last word in style, luxury and discreet technology with stunning views of London and the River Thames. Truly a suite fit for a King. Nine ‘signature suites’ were also styled after some of The Savoy’s most high profile guests including Maria Callas, Charlie Chaplin, Marlene Dietrich and Frank Sinatra. The suites contain artwork, literature, photographs and artifacts that evoke the time and spirit of the stars including the 12 pink roses in the Marlene Dietrich Suite that the actress always requested upon arrival. The Savoy brings to the 21st century its own style of quality, charm and originality, steeped in the character of London of which it is an essential part. Authentically celebrating its past, The Savoy is now also leading the present. Describe your style Modern British. I grew up in Oxfordshire in a family of cooks. I have always loved food and am as British as they come! I try to use seasonal ingredients and local produce where possible. I really enjoy taking simple ingredients and turning them into something that tastes great. How do you decide your menu? I work with the seasons and take inspiration from my team. Lots of tasting! Which menu dish do you most enjoy preparing? I enjoy making all the dishes on the menu and don’t have a particular favourite although the Lobster Ravioli is great for the summer. What ingredient is most important to your cooking? Fruits as these create the balance between sweet and savoury dishes.

lakeside setting overlooking the beautiful broad water with view of the Hall itself. What’s been your best culinary idea? I couldn’t pin down a particular idea but stumbling across foraging has changed my cooking. I love being able to go out for a walk on the estate, find wild herbs, plants and mushrooms and take them back to the kitchen and make something extraordinary out of them. Who did you train under and what did they teach you? I first trained under Gus Ashenford at Chavignol in Chipping Norton. He taught me the classic French techniques that I enjoyed using on local British produce. My time with Claude Bosi and Hibiscus in London taught me finesse in finishing my dishes. What’s your prediction for the next food trend? I don’t really have an opinion on food trends and don’t follow them. I am more interested in the seasons and what makes great tasting food. What’s in your fridge at home? Pots of pureed food and baby milk! I have a 7 month old daughter at home. Favourite quick meal? A great sandwich. Brie de Meaux, cured ham and red onion marmalade – delicious! Top three tips for amateur chefs? Buy best produce available, keep it simple and taste taste taste! Best cookbook? Hamstring Strains

BY DR RALPH ROGERS MD PHD MBA, MEDICAL DIRECTOR, THE LONDON SPORTS INJURY CLINIC, 108 HARLEY STREET

H

amstring injuries are a common injury in sports especially if participating in activities that require sprinting, such as track, basketball and football. Usually referred to simply as the hamstring, it is the group of three muscles and bordering tendons at the back of the thigh and knee: the semitendionsus, semimembranosus, and biceps femoris. Its function is to bend the knee and move the thigh backwards from the hip. Injury occurs when this group is forcibly stretched beyond its limits and the muscle tissue tears. There are three degrees of strains, depending upon the severity of the injury. Grade 1 First-degree hamstring strains are simply a few damaged muscle fibres, within the muscle group. There may be some swelling or discomfort, but usually this will not effect the ability to walk normally. Grade 2 Second-degree strains involve damage to a number of extensive muscle fibres, usually requiring the attention of a dedicated sports-medicine physician. There may be pain, noticeable swelling, or a limp. It would be difficult to fully straighten the knee and trying to flex the knee again resistance causes pain. Grade 3 Third-degree strains involve a complete rupture of muscle fibres. There would certainly be severe pain and very immediate and noticeable swelling. It would be difficult to weight bear without the help of crutches as well. Luckily, this is rare but is often serious enough to require surgery. The hamstrings work in a very specific way during sprinting. Whilst in mid stride, the hamstring lengthens, usually while under load from the body weight and shifting forces of the motion impact. It works to pull back the tibia, or the shin, after it kicks forward when the leg is stretched out to full stride. In addition, the hamstring is responsible for eccentric deceleration and sudden changing of directions, both of which incur a lot of stress. A strain can occur in these circumstances when the weight and forces carried in the body and muscles, is changed in orientation or by sudden changes in direction. This is when the muscle is challenged whilst already under a full load, or is working beyond its capacity and overstriding occurs. The damage often occurs when the muscle is fully stretched out, just before it contracts to bend the knee. When the injury happens it will often be sudden, with the athlete immediately feeling the pain of the trauma. In the case of second-degree and third-degree muscle strains, swelling and tightening of the local area surrounding the site of the injury will follow. With first-degree injuries swelling will usually occur within the first few hours with only the sign of minor bruising to the limb, with increased swelling to come later. The athlete will also notice an immediate lose of strength in the limb, with weakness persisting for several weeks, depending on the severity of the injury. This can continue for longer, especially if the hamstring strain is a third-degree where the muscle tissue has been complete torn and compromised. Treatment and Rehabilitation Most of the time, specifically if the hamstring strain is first-degree, the body will respond well to R.I.C.E: Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. With these minor injuries the healing process is quick and doesn’t require any specific program to aid with the rehabilitation back into sport. Although, players who do suffer from first-degree muscle strain should be advised to examine the reasons why they have become injured in this manner to prevent further injury.

84 AUGUST2014

Regardless of the severity of the hamstring injury, the treatment is always the same. The limb should be rested in an elevated position with a padded ice pack for at least 20 minutes every 2 hours. This may not be practical in every application, but it is an important part of the healing process which, if ignored, will extend the healing time. A compression bandage or thigh support can help with the immediate local pain of, if available. This can also reduce the swelling and, when used with ice packs, is highly effective at minimizing pain and helping the athlete regain their normal mobility. The patient must also be encouraged to rest. While this may be difficult for the competitive athlete, if not rested the injury can become much worse. A firstdegree injury, if left unattended or allowed to be used in sports, can quickly become a second-degree strain. Similarly a second-degree can quickly become a thirddegree injury. When examining a patient who has suffered from any muscle strain it is crucial to establish a clear diagnosis of the type of injury suffered. Reviewing past medical notes is important to get an indication of past injuries, specifically previous back and thigh problems, as well as any possibly related underlying medical conditions. MRI scans should be requested, this can confirm the amount of damage to the muscle and if there is an avulsion of the tendon, (where the injured tendon has pulled away small pieces of bone). Rehabilitation should include resistance exercises and stretching as they gently help to align the scar tissue that forms during the healing process. This alignment of the scar tissue along the stress lines of the muscle allows the strength of the hamstring to be retained. If aligned against the muscle fibres, it will become weakened and the possibility of re-injury is increased. The resistance training has the added advantage of allowing the player to remain at a competitive level of fitness. As the rehabilitation continues and the patient continues to make progress, the repetitions of the stretches are increased and core-strengthening exercises are introduced. The severity of the injury will dictate the length of recovery and rehabilitation time. Someone with a firstdegree injury may be able to return to a lower level of activity such as jogging within 7 to 9 days and sprinting within 3 weeks. With a third-degree injury the return to this reduced level can take upwards of 3 months. It is important when return to sport to ensure the athlete is able to compete effectively and without a risk of repeated injury. It is important that a Physician who specializes in Sports Medicine review the rehabilitation process to confirm the appropriate measures are taken. If this recovery process is not adhered to, the return to sport can be delayed or the athlete may be unable to compete on the same level as before. We asked bePilates “What are some common questions you get asked by prospective clients?” Q Is Pilates just for women? A J oseph Pilates was himself a man, who developed his system of exercises for fellow (male) inmates interned during World War 1. Don’t let the lack of large bulky weights or the grunting that accompanies the lifting of such weights fool you. Plenty of male athletes and celebrities turn to Pilates to strengthen, fine-tune and rehabilitate their bodies. Tiger Woods, David Beckham, Andy Murray are just a few names in the ever expanding list of Pilates devotees. Q I sn’t Pilates just like yoga? A T he short answer is no . There are some similarities but even more differences between these two methods. One key difference is Pilates uses equipment such as the Reformer, Cadillac, and Chair to gently introduce beginners to Pilates or work with special populations such as expecting mothers or those recovering from injury. The same equipment is used to challenge the strongest of athletes. Additionally, while Yoga concentrates mostly on increasing strength and flexibility of the spine and limbs; Pilates focuses on building abdominal strength first, and then symmetrical musculature as well as overall flexibility. Q M y GP recommended I do Pilates to help me manage my lower back pain, how can Pilates help with that?

Retro Style

First things first, decide on what theme or era you would like your home to be. Some fun ideas for different decades are the kitchy 50’s, the mod look of the 60’s, or the bohemiam look of the 70’s.

A

retro style usually has a fun, lively feel to it, with bright colours, wild designs and an overall sense of “flair”. Just think back to the fabrics and textures during the 60’s and you’ll immediately get a sense of where your decor needs to go to truly capture the essence of retro style. Because retro-style requires such a bold approach, it also requires a certain personality to pull it off. There’s nothing laid-back or casual about retro-style decorating. On the contrary, it is loud, busy and most definitely “funky”. Trying to furnish your entire home strictly from a specific era can become quite tricky, so you could mix the old with new, and accessorise with items that complement the era you are looking to portray. So, how can you bring retro style decorating into your home? Let’s take a look at some common elements of this energising decorating style: Colors in Retro Decors One of the easiest ways to give a room a retro feel is to choose retro colours. Fortunately, that’s not hard to do. Avocado green is by far the most popular retro colour choice, followed closely by mustard yellow and combinations of black, white and red. In addition, purple and hot pink both make a great addition to your retro decor. Don’t be surprised to find items that have a little of everything, with mixes of bright orange, green, indigo blue, and yellow on one single piece. Tie-dyed fabrics, checkered patterns, and elaborate paisley prints were also a trademark of the era.

Music helped shape this decade as rock music mixed with disco fever, disco balls and disco dancing hit the groovy scene. Many 70’s homes were light, airy and free in reflection of the movements that were happening; activism, freedom and self-expression. There are many ways to integrate elements of 1970’s decor into your home without over doing it – there is the traditional retro style, or you may prefer for a more modern contemporary retro theme. Get the 70’s look: Colour: Building your colour scheme around the hippie, ethnic style which would give you a more neutral palette of earth tones i.e. beige, sage green, sand, brown, mustard, burnt orange, navy, plum, aubergine, wine and deep shades of purple. Brown and cream with orange and avocado were the most popular colour choices of the seventies. Of course there is the disco vibe, additional colours of silver and gold that you could fuse into your design ideas. Walls: Look for a fabulous wallpaper which you could add to your room or use to make a stunning mural. Vinyl wallpaper was popular during the 70’s however today there are many incredible designs that are paper or fabric backed. Patterned fabrics also make great murals so enjoy looking through lots of ranges before you make your final selection. They are a real nostalgic look and could be used in a very modern way within your design.

Retro Style Furniture Retro style furniture has an abstract feel to it, with each piece almost fighting for the limelight as the focal point of the room. Sofas are broad and elongated with multi-colored throw pillows for an added dash of colour. Shiny chrome barstools with bright red seats draw your attention to a diner-style kitchen while Mitt chairs and puzzle-piece ottomans provide unique seating for guests.

Decor: Look for some tubular chrome or polished steel pieces of furniture to add to your look. Bean bags are also a great addition. Super comfy! Retro style interiors have lots of big pattern so mix and match fabrics i.e. upholstery to sofas, scatter cushions and curtains. It is daring to have lots of pattern in the one room however, you can combine them as long as you link in tones so that your design look tasteful.

The Seventies retro style interiors and design is considered very trendy these days. It is an exciting blend of hippie, beatnik, and boho chic with the funky kitsch designs from the sixties.

Lighting: Pendant lamps make a great retro centrepiece in the room, or you could go for dim retro lamps around the room, creates a relaxing mood in the room!

Take the plunge with an outdoor swimming pool

They’re glamorous, highly desirable, fun and great for parties. And if you’ve been stuck in a car or train on a sweltering summer day, nothing beats diving into one as soon as you get home. A swimming pool in the garden will keep you fit and have friends beating a path to your door on a hot day.

A

swimming pool is not guaranteed to increase a property’s value or render it more sellable, even if it’s a large enough home to make a pool, along with a tennis court, de rigueur. In fact, with young families’ safety concerns, it could reduce the number of potential buyers, so do bear this in mind if you are planning to sell at a later date. Outdoor pools (not counting the above-ground temporary ones) will cost from about £30,000 up to £100,000, but keep in mind this is a lifestyle choice, not an investment. Have a swimming pool because you want one and will use it, and forget the “added value” bit. And do check whether you need planning permission before you start to create your dream pool. Position is everything: south-facing, out of the wind, away from falling leaves and the right distance from the house provides maximum enjoyment. There are two main types of swimming pool: aboveground pools and submerged pools. Aboveground pools tend to be cheaper because you don’t have to dig a hole and fit them but submerged pools are more traditional and provide easier entry for children or elderly people. In addition to the type of pool, you will have to decide on the type of materials you want your pool to consist of. There are three common finishes: liner; fibreglass shell; and tiles. These all require different amounts of maintenance and will affect the overall price of the job. You can use eco-friendly equipment such as ground source heat pumps and solar pool covers can reduce running costs.

What is fun is a “pool house” – a new structure or converted outbuilding with a fold-back glass wall, tables and chairs and a fridge-freezer stocked with ice creams and drinks. A glass-sided building or converted barn could, of course, house an indoor pool, which may be the ultimate British-weather compromise. “If it’s southfacing you could have the best of both worlds. Open the fold-backs when it’s warm, close them when it’s not, and you can still use the pool in winter,” says Christopher Bailey at Knight Frank’s country house department. Where can I find a contractor and how do I choose one? Of course, contractors advertise in local directories and online but the problem with choosing one like this is that you will have no idea of how reliable, professional, and expensive the company is before you deal with them. The best thing to do is to ask people you trust, who have had pools built, exactly who it was that they used. Neighbours are always a good source of information! In addition to this, always check that a contractor has up to date insurance, covering him for any damage that might be caused to your property.

Safety is a priority: a surrounding fence with a lockable gate, and steps leading down to the main pool are advisable. Especially if you have children. They can still look stylish, ie the curved Roman steps add a particular feeling of luxury to your swimming pool.

What qualifications/accreditations should you look for? SPATA (the Swimming Pool and Associated Trades Association) vets its members before membership to ensure that they are competent, professional and up to date in their methods and workmanship, which means that a SPATA-accredited contractor is likely to be a good bet. That said, the single most important thing you should look for in a contractor is experience. Someone with at least several years’ experience in building swimming pools is ideal: they will know what does and doesn’t work and will have built several different types of pools, which means they will be well-placed to advise you on yours. Costs of buying and installing a swimming pool? The estimate that you are given will comprise of two parts: the contractor’s labour rate and the materials rate. Often, however, labour will be included in an overall estimate price as opposed to being calculated daily. It is very important to get multiple quotes as prices can vary wildly. It is recommended that you obtain at least 3 estimates. It is also worth asking if they will guarantee their work – and how long for!

Whatever shape or design you would like - piano, fish, plane or an infinity pool, it can be built and designed to your requirements by a professional swimming pool contractor. Outdoor swimming pool design can include automatic covers, landscaping and garden buildings for changing, plant and equipment. You could also consider a beautiful tiled motif on the floor of your swimming pool to add a touch of personality. You can even design your own!

You should also be sure to get a written estimate with a breakdown of all the costs. The final price should not deviate greatly from this guide price (provided no unforeseen problems surface). Please also bear in mind the cost of running and maintaining the pool after it is built. This ranges from £200 to £800 per season, depending on the size of the pool and the insulating materials.

Increasingly popular is a pool as part of an outdoor entertaining area, perhaps with other leisure facilities, like a hot tub or play area. The addition of a spa to your swimming pool really adds a social dimension. What better way is there to while away some time in comfort and warmth, without all that energetic swimming?

LIGHT-UP YOUR

OUTDOOR SPACE When you spend time outdoors, entertaining your family and friends, you’ll need adequate lighting to illuminate your outside space.

W

hether you’re sitting outside on your patio area, or you wish to place a spotlight on specific areas of your garden, outdoor lighting can serve these purposes. You have a variety of options to suit your individual tastes, the size of your outdoor space, and its purpose. It’s important to consider what you need and how you will use the lighting, and with so many benefits to outdoor lighting, you can add beauty, function and safety to your outdoor areas.

Primary points to deciding on your outside lighting are 1.SAFETY Use a combination of uplights as well as lights installed on outdoor structures to illuminate your seating areas effectively. Outdoor lighting can add safety in a variety of ways. Light pathways to ensure that people navigate these areas safely. Use zone lighting to illuminate areas of your garden and landscape for night-time use. Zone lighting can be effective for lighting your patio, swimming pool or outdoor seating area. Illuminate driveways, garages and entryways to keep your outdoor space safe after dark. The more lights, the safer your outdoor areas will be. 2.SECURITY A well-lit driveway and garden presents a feeling of security and maintenance. When you keep your outdoor areas illuminated, you present a feeling of care and involvement. Install lights with motion detectors so they illuminate when motion activates them. A dark garden can be splashed with bright lights when someone walks through – this can be helpful to deter would-be criminals from trespassing on your property.

96 AUGUST2014

3. COMFORT Extend your living area into your garden, particularly if you entertain outdoors on a regular basis. If you have a patio with seating, add comfortable and attractive lighting to enable you to use these areas after dark. The ambience of outdoor seating can be pleasant and inviting, especially when you feature attractive outdoor lighting that adds to your outdoor decor. Use a combination of lights installed on outdoor structures to illuminate your seating areas effectively. 4.DECOR Showcase and highlight specific areas with decorative lighting. By installing lights around your garden in various spots, you pull the eye to these areas and display them attractively. Lighting can be a wonderful way to display planting areas or flower gardens. Install mood lighting along outdoor buildings to add pleasant splashes of light. You can even add low-voltage exterior lights to trees and shrubs outdoors to illuminate planting areas and add beautiful accents to your exterior areas. 5.CURB APPEAL A well-lit home presents a cared-for impression to your neighbours and visitors. Your house will appear warm and inviting, and in contrast to a dark and drab home, your illuminated home will draw people in and offer a warm refuge for family and friends. Regardless of the purpose of your outdoor lighting, the benefits are all positive. From increasing safety and security to creating a warm and inviting environment, adding outdoor lighting will enhance and beautify your home.

Every time you open a bottle of champagne,

it’s a celebration... The very sight of a champagne flute, even an empty one, lifts the heart in anticipation. But why that beautiful but tiresome-to-wash-up shape?

A

s long ago as the late 17th century we were enjoying champagne but it threw a heavy sediment and the only way to drink it was in a long thin glass. In such a vessel the sediment sank to the bottom, you sipped off the top inch or so, threw the sediment away, rinsed the glass and started again. The trouble was that the only fine glassware we had came from the continent and this proved to be too delicate for the rumbustious English. Fortunately in the 1670’s George Ravenscroft applied for a patent for his ‘glass of lead’ which contained a proportion of lead oxide. He found that this created a material that was stronger and more durable than that from the continent. This happy development allowed us to revel in the joys of champagne from flutes long after the wine makers had eliminated the heavy sediment. Until indeed the beginning of the 19th century when the ‘coup’ or saucer shape glass became universally popular. There are various stories as to why this happened, but my

own favourite puts the blame firmly on George Prince of Wales when as Prince Regent he was hosting a large dinner party in his beloved Pavillion at Brighton. A dessert was served in the traditional saucer shaped, short stem bowl. The Prince didn’t like the pudding and slung it over his shoulder, demanding that champagne be put into his bowl to refresh his palate. Protocol meant that the entire company had to follow suit and I love to think of the scene with forty or so guests all throwing their puddings over their shoulder and requesting champagne. But for whatever reason, we drank champagne out of saucers until the early years after the Second World War when gradually we returned to the good old flute. My first glass of champagne was in a dimpled half-pint mug. I wonder what the Prince would have thought of that. John Bly, 533 Kings Road, Chelsea john@johnbly.com
