London Design Festival

‘THE SMILE’ BY ALISON BROOKS

London is the creative capital of the world; a city where home-grown talent and international perspectives blend to create a dynamic and forward-thinking environment where design thrives.

E

stablished in 2003, the London Design Festival is a citywide celebration that brings together a global community of designers, artists, architects, and retailers. The Festival is a platform for innovative design initiatives, showcasing ideas from more than 300 partners who represent the best of London’s design community. In 2016 over 400 events and installations will take place, from an engaging programme at the V&A Museum to large scale installations across landmark locations. A major part of the London Design Festival’s programme is the presentation of Landmark Projects. This year AHEC, award-winning firm Alison Brooks Architects, Arup, Merk and the London Design Festival collaborate to create a new installation, The Smile. An urban installation that showcases the structural and spatial potential of cross–laminated hardwood, using American tulipwood. Using construction sized panels of hardwood CLT for the first time, Alison Brooks’ concept is of a 3.5m high and 36m long curved rectangular tube - a very pure and efficient structural form, and the first ever mega-tube made of timber. The timber tube is curved into a long upside down arc – hence its name – which, like a wheel, only touches the ground at one point. In our increasingly globalised and digitally connected world, ‘third

8 AUGUST2016

places’– those that blur the boundaries between th th work and home – are growing steadily in importance. A variety of third places will be presented around the city, each has been tailored to the needs of urban society. As an urban brand, MINI is familiar with the challenges faced by city-dwellers.. The MINI LIVING installations will showcase an entirely new category of urban area: previously unused spaces become places that are made accessible to the public, designed for adaptability and the enjoyment of one and all; a concept of the city as an extension of our personal space. The V&A is continuing its collaboration with the London Design Festival, with their partnership now in its 8th year. As the core location of the Festival, the V&A will again house a broad range of commissioned activity across the Museum. Installations, events, talks and workshops will take place, including the hugely popular weekend events, Graphics and Digital Design. The first ever London Design Biennale will take over the entirety of Somerset House from 7 – 27 September, bringing together some of the world’s most exciting and ambitious designers, innovators and cultural bodies for an exhibition exploring the role of design in our collective futures. As part of the activity during the Festival, a number of large group shows will take place across London, including 100% Design, Olympia - the UK’s largest contemporary design trade show. The event attracts hundreds of exhibitors and over 26,000 professional visitors with significant spending power.

designjunction designjunction, now in its sixth year, returns next month as part of the annual London Design Festival. Relocating to an exciting new long-term home in King’s Cross, designjunction will be delivering a specially curated programme of design exhibitions, installations, retail experience, events and workshops based upon the leading theme, Immersed in Design.

esignjunction is delighted to play host to the inaugural Dyslexic Design, an exhibition which explores the connection between dyslexia and the creative industries. The project, in support of the British Dyslexia Association, is to celebrate dyslexic designers’ work. The Dyslexic Design exhibition, curated by one of the UK’s leading designers Jim Rokos, will challenge perceptions of dyslexia by accentuating the positive effects of living with dyslexia and its close association with design in a bid to remove the stigma sometimes associated with it. More than 10 leading designers from multiple design disciplines including product, fashion, illustration, home decor and fine art – all of whom are dyslexic – will showcase their work in stunning temporary curated exhibitions at designjunction. Confirmed designers include: Sebastian Bergne, Terence Woodgate, Kristjana S Williams, Tom

Raffield, Tina Crawford, Rohan Chhabra, Vitamin, and Jim Rokos. For the first time many of the designers will talk openly about the challenges they face in their career paths, with many of their work also demonstrating unusual three-dimensional thinking. Throughout the show, critical debates on design education, the relationship between dyslexia and lateral thinking, and the relationship between dyslexia and visual thinking will take place. “It is my belief that I am able to design the way I do, because of my dyslexia and not despite it,” said Dyslexic Design exhibition founder Jim Rokos. “I also firmly believe that other dyslexic designers have idiosyncratic styles because of their dyslexia. I am delighted designjunction shares my vision and desire to remove the unwanted and unwarranted stigma sometimes associated with dyslexia and in doing so change perceptions of it. We believe dyslexia is something that drives and inspires creative thought and design.” To coincide with the exhibition, designjunction will donate a percentage of its 2016 ticket sales to the British Dyslexia Association at the end of the show.

Master of the art of watercolour A ‘Force of Nature’

John Doyle

at The Osborne Studio Gallery, Motcomb Street, Belgravia John Doyle makes his picturesque journeys in the manner of a traditional 18th Century traveller with fifty new plein air paintings. John Doyle, 88, former President of the Royal Watercolour Society, is still prolific as an open air artist. He travels with his kit to paint landscapes around the world.

T

hroughout his life as an artist, he has been covering a vast amount of territory to find views which tug at his heart: churches, colleges, monuments, palaces and cathedrals around England, Italy and France, including London, Oxford, Cambridge, Eton College, Winchester, Chichester, Ely, Canterbury, the Loire valley, Normandy for a feast of churches and abbeys, St Paul’s Rome, and the Forum in Rome. He has painted in the Old City of Jerusalem, the great temples of Karnak and Luxor in Egypt, Syria, Mount Athos in Greece, many parts of Italy as well as Venice and Siena (his favourites) the Alhambra in Spain. Endlessly adventurous, he

16 AUGUST2016

seeks out spectacular architecture, especially ecclesiastical, but also chateaux on the Loire like Chenonceaux and Amboise. He once walked from Canterbury to Rome, in preparation for an exhibition in the Chapter House of Canterbury Cathedral. Along the way he completed four hundred paintings, persuading a Monsignor at the Vatican to introduce him to the Holy Father himself. John Doyle was born in Dulwich and grew up near Chevening in Kent (where new Foreign Secretary Boris and friends will be spending their weekends). As a child he rode around the Kent countryside in his grandfather’s majestic open-topped Buick. He learned to love the landscape, nurturing an early gift for painting. In his own words, ‘All children paint, but my nursery walls were covered with murals: somehow I never stopped when my contemporaries discarded pencils for footballs’ John Doyle started life in industry, but the desire to paint never diminished. As soon as he came master of his own destiny, John escaped ‘by the simple

stratagem of advertising for a manager’. John Ward RA, fashionable portrait painter of the Royal family and assorted grandees, acted as his mentor, travelling with him to Venice, and putting him in front of the Santa Maria della Salute at 5 am one morning, instructing him to ‘start from the top and work downwards.’ He sold his pictures at the Royal Academy, exhibited at Spink in St James’s and the Catto Gallery in Hampstead. In 1996 he was elected President of the venerable Royal Watercolour Society, ‘unsolicited, and greatly to my surprise.’ John is following the path of the golden age of British watercolour, which spanned the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Young artists turned away from the studio to paint their native landscape head on. Watercolour was easily carried in a pocket - all you need do is scoop some water from a stream to release a flood of colour on to the page. THE DETAILS For more details visit www.osg.uk.com

PROPERTY

London's first £150million apartment

for sale in Admiralty Arch overlooking the Mall A luxury 15,000 sq ft property in London’s historic Admiralty Arch is now on the market with a record price tag of up to £150 million.

T

he apartment in the historic Grade I listed landmark boasts 12 bedrooms and 12 bathrooms and is set to become one of the world’s most expensive apartments. Spanish developer Rafael Serrano, who bought a 250-year lease to the Grade I-listed building from the Government for a reported £60 million in 2012, is offering buyers the chance to this as one apartment, or otherwise will split it into up to four flats ranging from 1700 sq ft up to 7100 sq ft. Prime London property agents expect the price tag to range from £8000£9,000 per sq ft. That would mean a buyer snapping up the whole residential site paying as much as £150 million, once stamp duty of over £16 million and fees were accounted for. For that, buyers would receive a 250 year lease. With terrace views span Buckingham Palace, St James’ Park and Trafalgar Square, previous residents of the iconic building on the Mall, include Lords Mountbatten and Hailsham, Winston Churchill and Ian Fleming whilst creating James Bond. The apartment will have six metre-high ceilings, intricate crests and original fireplaces, antique fittings from 1910, and come with “free” access to private off-road valet parking, a private entrance and lift, a 24-hour concierge service and security and lifetime membership to a private members’ club.

26 AUGUST2016

If the Admiralty Arch property sold for £150m it would surpass London’s most expensive flat, a penthouse at One Hyde Park that sold for £140 million in 2014. The same year a five-floor penthouse with a giant infinity pool and its own slide at the top of a new skyscraper in Monaco that overlooks the Mediterranean was put on the market for £240 million. In New York the most expensive apartment, costing $85 million and taking up the entire 45th floor of the Midtown Manhattan building, included two Rolls-Royce Phantoms, a $1 million yacht, and dinner at a two-Michelinstarred restaurant once a week for a year, plus a Hamptons vacation rental for the summer, and a private chef in its estate agent listing. Admiralty Arch’s renovation involves some of Britain’s most expensive designers, including David Mlinaric, who has worked on the interiors of the Royal Opera House, the Victoria & Albert Museum and British Embassies in Paris and Washington, and Michael Blair, who transformed the The Connaught and Claridges hotels. Other British firms involved include Linley, George Spencer Fabrics, Arthur Brett, Soane Britain, Collier Webb and Chesney’s. Mr Serrano said: “We have created a dream team of architects and artisans to care for this historic building which has been part of the fabric of British royalty, politics, history and culture since the 1900s.Admiralty Arch … has always been a symbol of British social and political power and which has witnessed Coronations, Royal Weddings, grand state occasions and Presidential visits. Now it is entering a new, exciting phase as we transform the building into the finest hotel and residences in London.” Building work is already underway, with buyers being asked to place a deposit now and move in “within three years.” The operator of the hotel is expected to be chosen in the coming months.

The Home of British Television...

Can now become yours The historic former headquarters of the BBC have opened to the public for the first time as the initial phase of 950 homes goes on sale.

W

est London's most famous forecourt, familiar to TV audiences worldwide, will become the centrepiece of a new 14-acre neighbourhood of apartments set among the Fifties architecture. Television Centre will also be home to vast modern office spaces, restaurants, shops and a cinema. Soho House will be unveiling a new hotel and private members club with a rooftop swimming pool, alongside a 25,000sq ft Cowshed spa and gym. The scheme, designed by Paul Monaghan of Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, retains many of the building's Grade II-listed features as part of the design.

The first 432 homes of “Helios” apartments are being created within the distinctive circular-shaped block wrapped around the central courtyard and its familiar statue of Helios, the Greek sun god, which symbolises the radiation of television around the world. A new outer crescent of homes will mirror the inner ring, separated from it by gardens, while the original “stage door” entrance to Television Centre will be a 24-hour concierge lobby. The new apartments are just the beginning of the transformation of a 145-acre site. More than £8 billion of investment is bringing over 5,000 homes, a new Imperial College campus, an expanded Westfield shopping mall and the largest-ever John Lewis department store. Studio apartments are priced from £550,000, while one-bedroom apartments start at £650,000. Larger homes are priced from £1 million, rising to £7 million for one of the penthouse flats at the top of the Helios block, overlooking the entire forecourt. The Dresser A major revival of The Dresser by Academy award-winning author Sir Ronald Harwood starring Ken Stott and Reece Shearsmith.

O

livier Award winner Ken Stott and BAFTA Award winner Reece Shearsmith come together as lead actor “Sir” and Norman, his dresser, in this eagerly anticipated revival of ‘a wonderfully affectionate and intelligent play about the theatre’ The Guardian. Both hilarious and poignant, The Dresser explores the relationship between two men who are reluctantly and inevitably co-dependent. As World War II rages, backstage in a provincial English theatre, an ageing, once-famous classical actor is troubled. Sir, the last in a dying breed of great English Shakespearean actors, is unwilling to take to the stage to deliver his renowned portrayal of King Lear. It falls to his faithful dresser Norman to rouse another great performance from him, to keep both the show and its star from falling apart.

GIANT - BY HUMAN ZOO THEATRE COMPANY, PART OF THE EMERGING THEATRE MINI SEASON

JESSICA AQUILINA, SIAN ELEANOR GREEN AND SERIN IBRAHIM IN REHEARSALS FOR UNDER MY THUMB

PENGUIN! ELEPHANT!

Securing the future of theatre in Greenwich BY JAMES HADDRELL, ARTISTIC & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF GREENWICH THEATRE

From the outside, Greenwich Theatre looks very quiet this summer. Perhaps the quietest it has looked for a decade. However, despite the major summer productions, the outdoor shows, the education projects and the summer festival events that we have worked on over the past ten years, this is probably our most important summer since the theatre reopened in 1999.

W

hen I took over as director in 2007, Greenwich Theatre was struggling with severe debts and it was affecting the work on stage. Over the subsequent years, with a very small but incredibly dedicated team, we have been able to first control and then reduce those debts, year on year, making the company far more robust than it has been for a long time. Alongside that, we have progressively reduced our reliance on grants to support the work that we do. In 2007, 60% of our income came from a range of grants. Following a series of reductions, this year that number has dropped to just 10%, and we have achieved that whilst increasing our artistic reputation, the number of shows that we present, and the number of people coming to see our work. As a result of our success, we are now able to announce that Royal Greenwich has agreed an investment of £400,000 into a package of building repairs. Parts of this building date back to the second half of the nineteenth century, so maintaining it can be a major challenge. With the support of the local authority we are now able to make important roof repairs, to rewire much of the building, and to start the long process of improving front of house and backstage. When audiences come back in September many of the improvements will be invisible, but one important advance will be the

launch of a studio theatre. This starts life in September as a pop-up space when I’ll be directing the premiere of the new play Under My Thumb in the studio, but over time it will gradually develop into a fully programmed and equipped second performance space. Whilst this is just the start of a much longer building improvement programme it sees us well underway. Over the coming months we will be launching a large scale fundraising campaign to support the rest of the work, relaunching the theatre Friends Scheme as a way for people to get involved and see more of what we do, and of course, continuing to bring the very best theatre to Greenwich for our audiences to enjoy.

Celebrating 40 Years of Theatre in London and New York The V&A is celebrating the rich creative theatre talent of the West End and New York’s Broadway, two world class centres of theatrical excellence.

C

urtain Up: Celebrating 40 Years of Theatre explores the extraordinary range of craft and collaboration that goes into creating awardwinning plays, musicals and productions. The show is a free and immersive theatrical experience taking visitors from the stage, to the design workshops and through the history of the awards to the red carpet. Curated by the V&A and The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Centre, in partnership with the Society of London Theatre (SOLT), Curtain Up is part of a year-long programme of activity organised by SOLT to celebrate 40 years of the Olivier Awards (1976-2016), awarded annually to recognise excellence in professional theatre. Curtain Up is designed by RFK Architects and Tom Piper, the acclaimed designer and theatre maker renowned for his Tower of London poppies installation, Blood Swept Lands And Seas of Red, a collaboration with ceramic artist Paul Cummins. Curtain Up brings together costumes, designs, models, photographs, archival production material, film and awards, much on display for the first time. Plays and musicals which have performed well both in London and New York are highlighted with costumes on display from Disney’s The Lion King, designed by Julie Taymor, costume designs by William Ivey Long for Chicago

and The Producers and Christopher Oram’s costume designs for the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies. Visitors can see the set models for Matilda the Musical, an RSC musical which won seven Olivier awards and five Tony awards, designed by Rob Howell as well as models from the National Theatre’s award-winning production War Horse (2007). On display for the first time in the UK are set models for the New York productions of Carousel (1994) and Sunday in the Park with George (1983). Visitors will have the opportunity to step into a scene from The National Theatre’s production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, specially designed for Curtain Up. Film clips from notable theatre productions from the V&A’s National Video Archive of Performance (NVAP) and the NYPL’s Theatre on Film and Tape archive (TOFT) are embedded throughout. Highlights include original costume designs from The Phantom of the Opera by Maria Bjornson (1986), one of the longest running West End musicals, and the longest running Broadway production in history, shown alongside the costume worn by a recent West End Phantom; a selection of golden top hats from A Chorus Line which won both the Tony Award (1976) and the inaugural Olivier Award (1976) for Best New Musical; a tunic worn by Rudolf Nureyev in Romeo and Juliet which won the Olivier in 1977; and Dame Helen Mirren DBE’s dress designed by Bob Crowley and worn in The Audience, a role which she won both an Olivier (2013) and Tony Award (2015) for Best Actress. THE DETAILS For more details visit www.vam.ac.uk/curtainup #CurtainUp

Having worked on both Broadway and the West End, I am delighted that Curtain Up, marking 40 years since the Olivier Awards were inaugurated, honours the shared artistic heritage binding London and New York and showcases the wealth of creative talent that brings great productions to the stage on both sides of the Atlantic. The North London Military Wives Choir Brocket Hall is delighted to welcome the North London Military Wives Choir for a charity dinner with a very special performance in aid of SSAFA. As a preview to the evening, Jody Jones (Chair of NLMWC) answered a few questions giving readers a glimpse of what to expect on the 30th September. 1. WHAT DOES THE MILITARY WIVES CHOIR RAISE MONEY FOR? The Military Wives Choirs Foundation is all about supporting and strengthening the wider Forces family. This aligns perfectly with the objectives and values of SSAFA. We are proud to have the Foundation as part of our charity. 2. TO ANYONE WATCHING, IT SEEMS LIKE YOU HAVE SO MUCH FUN DOING SOMETHING YOU LOVE. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO JOIN THE CHOIR? The choir has brought together a wide range of people who all have a passion for singing, but all for different reasons. The TV series “The Choir” was an amazing way for people to see how much fun us ladies have singing in choirs across the country. For some, they have always loved singing since school and the choir gives them an opportunity to continue, whereas for others it was a way to meet new people and enjoy something they love doing at the same time. 3. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE SONG TO SING, AND WHY? DOES IT HOLD ANY SPECIAL MEANING? We don’t just have one favourite song in our collection, so many are popular for very different reasons. “Stronger Together” is popular as it really captures the ethos of the choir; “Bring him home” is a beautiful song with very meaningful words – often reducing our ladies to tears; “You'll never walk alone” 46 AUGUST2016

QA +

is loved by our ladies because of the words and the sense of belonging in our choir; whilst “Thank you for the music” is so upbeat and fun. We have a variety of pieces that we sing; each performance is special in its own way. 4. IF ANYONE TAKES A LOOK AT YOUR WEBSITE THEY WILL SEE YOU HAVE SUNG IN SOME FANTASTIC PLACES, IN FRONT OF A LOT OF REALLY INTERESTING PEOPLE. WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE EVENTS TO DO? Singing at the Poppy display and at Westminster Abbey have certainly been highlights but we all particularly enjoy singing in our local community each year. 5. YOU MUST HAVE HAD SOME AMAZING EXPERIENCES PERFORMING IN THE CHOIR, WHAT ARE YOUR HIGHLIGHTS? All of our performances are an amazing experience- all for different reasons but if we had to choose…Performing at Hackney Empire, Wembley Stadium (when we sang the National Anthem), Westminster Abbey and the Horseguards with the massed bands of the rifles and the poppy planting & display were particular highlights. 6. FOR THOSE READING THIS WHO WOULD LIKE TO JOIN THE MILITARY WIVES CHOIR, DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS FOR THEM TO MAKE IT HAPPEN? Just do it! We are a very friendly and supportive bunch and always welcome new members. There is no pressure to take part in events or sing solos but most members soon want to become more involved with the choir. 7. BROCKET HALL’S HISTORY HAS A PIECE THAT BELONGS TO WW2, MAKING IT A POIGNANT BUT ALSO TRULY BEAUTIFUL VENUE TO PERFORM IN. CAN YOU GIVE READERS A FLAVOUR OF WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE EVENING? We will be singing a selection of favourite MWC songs including a Vera Lyn medley and some other well known pieces which we hope you will enjoy. The North London Military Wives Choir are performing at Brocket Hall on Friday 30th September 2016. Please contact the box office on 01707 368700 or email events@brocket-hall.co.uk to book.

There really is an

art to gift-giving! There’s no doubt about it, receiving a gift makes us feel special, especially when that gift shows how much thought was behind it, because a gift can reveal how someone thinks about you.Whether it’s personal or business, gift exchanges can help build and maintain relationships – so how do you give the perfect gift?

H

elen’s Hampers believes there’s an art to gift-giving and it comes down to two key points; Thought and Presentation. They’ve built their business around this concept and pride themselves on making the art of giving, easy to do. Helenshampers.com lets you choose from a fine selection of hampers and then change the contents inside to really suit that special person’s taste. If you’ve chosen a chocolate hamper and they prefer dark-chocolate then it’s an easy swap. If your wine hamper has Merlot and they prefer Chateauneuf Du Pape, then just click the button. Better still, you can even personalise your hamper with special occasion ribbon and your photo, framed in your choice of contemporary photo frames. These are incredibly popular with customers who are sending to friends and family who

50 AUGUST2016

live far away, or who want to share a wedding photo or photo of Grandchildren. Helen’s Hampers was created when founder, Walter Brinzer, struggled to find the perfect hamper gift. Despite searching every website and visiting well known hamper retailers, they all seemed too generic, old fashioned or with un-inspiring gifts inside. Walter wanted to make it easy for people to send high-quality, thoughtful and beautiful gift-hampers, with a personal twist. “The thought counts in everything that we do, starting with the quality of the food, wine and gifts that we sell. We carefully source from passionate, artisan suppliers. Our wines and champagnes are selected from small growers, our chocolates from passionate chocolatiers and cheese from organic dairy farmers. Nothing goes into our hampers that has not been tasted and tested by us.” Making it easy to create a thoughtful gift, Helen’s Hampers also ensure that second gift-giving tick-box is ticked – the presentation! A gift that is stylish and beautifully presented speaks volumes about the thought and quality. Every one of their hampers is hand-packed with wood-wool shred inside beautiful, contemporary black hamper boxes and finished with satin ribbon, hand-tied into a stunning bow. From the moment they see the wrapped box to when it is opened and eventually tasted, they will know they’ve been sent a gift of quality and style. Helen’s Hampers has made it easy to master the art of gift-giving with just a few clicks. And for corporate gift-giving that requires something a little more specialised, they offer a full bespoke service, taking the pressure off companies, especially at Christmas. HOLIDAYS & TRAVEL

Can I travel abroad if I am pregnant?

With the proper precautions, and armed with information on when to travel, vaccination and travel insurance, most women can travel safely well into their pregnancy.

W

herever you go, find out what healthcare facilities are at your destination in case you require urgent medical attention. It’s a good idea to take your medical records with you so you can give doctors the relevant information if necessary. Make sure your travel insurance covers you for any eventuality, such as pregnancy-related medical care during labour, premature birth and the cost of changing the date of your return trip if you go into labour.

end of your pregnancy. Check with the airline for their policy on this. After week 28 of pregnancy, the airline may ask for a letter from your doctor or midwife confirming your due date, and that you aren’t at risk of complications. Long-distance travel (longer than five hours) carries a small risk of blood clots (deep vein thrombosis, or DVT). If you fly, drink plenty of water and move about regularly – every 30 minutes or so. You can buy a pair of support stockings in the pharmacy over the counter, which will reduce leg swelling.

WHEN TO TRAVEL IN PREGNANCY Some women prefer not to travel in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy because of nausea and feeling very tired during these early stages. The risk of miscarriage is also higher in the first three months, whether you’re travelling or not. Travelling in the final months of pregnancy can be tiring and uncomfortable. So, many women find the best time to travel or take a holiday is in mid-pregnancy, between four and six months. Travel during pregnancy is a concern for many women, but if your pregnancy has no complications then there’s no reason why you can’t travel safely, as long as you take the right precautions.

Below are some tips to help you have a healthy and comfortable flight: Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Do calf exercises – most airlines provide information on these. D on’t sit still for a long time – walk around the aircraft when possible. Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Adjust your seatbelt so the strap lies below your bump. Take an aisle seat where possible. It’ll give you extra leg room and make it easy to take short strolls and bathroom breaks.

FLYING IN PREGNANCY If this is your first baby, now’s your chance to enjoy the luxury of uninterrupted time alone, with your partner or with friends. It’s also a last opportunity to make the most of travelling light. For the next few years, you’ll have to take a car seat, pushchair, nappies and toys with you wherever you go! Flying is not harmful to you or your baby, but discuss any health issues or pregnancy complications with your midwife or doctor before you fly. The likelihood of going into labour is naturally higher after 37 weeks (around 34 weeks if you’re carrying twins), and some airlines will not let you fly towards the 58 AUGUST2016

TRAVEL VACCINATIONS WHEN YOU’RE PREGNANT Vaccines are not recommended because of concerns that the virus or bacteria in the jab could harm the baby in the womb. You are generally advised to avoid travelling to countries where immunisation is required. However, if you must travel to areas requiring inoculation, you should get your jabs. The risk of catching an infectious disease far outweighs the risk from vaccination. Some anti-malaria tablets aren’t safe to take in pregnancy so consult your GP for advice. If you’re travelling to Europe, make sure you have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), which entitles you to free treatment while abroad.

‘How long is this going to go on for? Till he’s 18?’ If we got through a school day without Jason being disruptive that was a plus point basically. Then it was flagged up that he had ADHD, so he was put on medication. He’s been on that ever since. Although he was never statemented, he always had a IEP, but it didn’t really seem to do very much.

However on the second day of starting the ALC program we noticed that Jason was calmer and he wasn’t as argumentative when we asked him to go to bed. In fact he took himself up to bed and went to sleep, because he was tired. It just doesn’t happen, he’s never been a child that napped. Since he’s been here, he’s now had two nights that he’s gone up himself and he’s got himself to bed. He wakes up in the night because he is such a light sleeper, so he wakes up with the smallest of noises. And then he’ll come in to us and ask us to go in while he settles or come in our room. But he’s gone through the night as well now which is brilliant! So his new ability to sleep will be a huge thing for us. Because if people don’t get their sleep it leads to all sorts of problems. I used to think – How long is this going to go on for? Till he’s 18?

When I used to mention homework he would literally jump over the sofas. When they say ‘climbing the wall’s’ – he was virtually doing that. He’d do one sentence and say he needed a reward or something. It was very, very difficult. If I went away I couldn’t rely that he’d behave with my husband. It used to be a real nightmare. Coming up to GCSE’s he needed to be able to knuckle down and do it. It affected the social side of things, because he doesn’t know when to back down. On sports days he’d always run to be front of the queue. He couldn’t understand that you’ve got to wait your turn. So you are on edge because you are thinking – How’s he going to behave? So it’s been a bit of a strain really. ‘We’ve always thought can we take him there? Can we go there?’ We’ve thought twice about doing things. Being on medication meant that he didn’t sleep very well and he never used to get hungry until about 10:30 – 11PM and then when we were trying to get him to bed he’d want a cooked meal. His appetite since we’ve started the treatment is unbelievable, it’s like he is making up for lost time. It really is. We’ve never seen him eat so well. Belgian Shoes a rare statement of luxury

These hand stitched loafers were designed in 1940’s and since their conception almost seventy years ago they have built an impressive group of fans. Belgian Shoes have become icons and admittedly have a tone of rare, luxury about them as they are only sold in two places in the world.

T

he unconscious, chic aesthetic of these shoes has awarded them many devotees; from the late Andy Warhol and Jackie Kennedy to Mario Testino, model Rachel Chandler and even the president of Manolo Blahnik, USA, George Malkemus, who buys six pairs of Mr Casual at once:

“They are the symbol of understated elegance. When I can’t be barefoot, I’m wearing Belgian Shoes.” Nicholas Haslam Ltd. stocks two styles of Belgian Shoes, Midinette for the ladies and Mr Casual for men. The key to the shoes’ success is their indisputable comfort, which is achieved through their 76 AUGUST2016

simple, hand- finished construction. Each insole is hand sewn, over a light filling of ‘piano hair’ felt by women, who work at home in the Belgian countryside. They make the shoes inside out, before sending them to a small factory in Izegem, for turning and finishing. Each shoe has a tiny bow, placed near the top of the vamp and is tied by the only Belgian woman who is qualified to do so. As the antithesis of flash, the Belgian Shoe line has never been more in demand. As consumption is now less conspicuous, a new generation of fashionable traditionalists have been drawn to the brand. These younger consumers are seeking out quality, comfort and something just that ‘little bit different’. They are the perfect unisex lounge shoe; ideal for everyday use, excellent on long-haul flights and they transcend from casual daywear to smart eveningwear seamlessly. They are perfectly traditional and strikingly chic; Belgian Shoes have become a WASP cult and can bring a twist of sophistication to any outfit. The Ebury Street shop also holds a bespoke range of Belgian Shoes, made with a stylish selection of linens designed by Paolo Moschino, which in the coming party season, makes them the elegant, must-have respite from the high heel. TINCT is popping up in London TINCT is a British leather goods label, run by brother and sister team, Rosie and Ben Broad. The current collection is a series of striking vegetable tanned leather handbags and wallets, all manufactured in the UK.

T

he brand hails from the south coast of England, where Rosie and Ben have their studio; a little barn at the end of a peaceful leafy lane. It is here that the siblings have created a space that allows design and business to flourish. Filled with materials, drawings, samples and specs, the studio is the heart of the business. Splitting life between there and London allows them the best of both worlds; space to bunker down when time allows, and the means to access fashion and design's heartland whenever is required. With such pride placed on each product, it’s not surprising to learn about the care and attention that goes into every component of the materials and the manufacturing. From the vegetable-tanned leather and Riri

78 AUGUST2016

zips, to their factories in Somerset and London, each element is carefully considered. Rosie scoured the East End of London for a suitable vegetable-tanned leather source, when one manufacturer suggested Tempesti. From day one, TINCT handbags and wallets have been produced using this fine leather, and Tempesti remains a blood line for the brand. Tempesti are a member of Pelle al Vegetal, a consortium of old-school tanneries all sharing a passion for this natural dying process, and the incredibly high standards of production that go with it. Swiss-Italian made Riri zips provide a superior smooth zipping experience, and the cotton zip tape adds another touch of matte luxe to every product. Lastly, the brass Chicago screws posts, which are found on the Shopper and the Tote are traditionally used to bind books. In TINCT’s case however they are deployed to fasten and attach the handles of each bag, and to add a final dash of understated originality.

All of this care manifests into every piece, and is ultimately responsible for driving the brand forwards. For the first time ever, TINCT have taken on a London shop to showcase the collection – the aspiration being to create a space which does justice not only to the products themselves, but also to the ethos of the brand. Complimentary letter embossing will be offered in store on all TINCT purchases, as well as gift-wrapping for those eager Christmas shoppers. There will also be a series of new products, not yet seen before but exclusively available for pre-order. Partnerships with London-based florist Harriet Slaughter of Bold Oxlip, and handmade motorcycle helmet brand Hedon will offer other interesting additions to the shop. Iconic watches British brand Newgate launch a watch collection inspired by their distinctive clock designs.

F

ounded by husband and wife team Jim and Chloe Read, British brand Newgate is well known for its innovative and design-led interior timepieces which have been gracing trendsetting interiors across the globe for several decades. A destination brand, Newgate’s clocks are stocked in prestigious department stores Harrods, Heals and Libertys, as well as a wealth of independent boutiques around the world. After three years of design and development, Newgate launched its signature watch collection, Newgate Watches, late last year. The diversification into the fashion arena sees the brand translate its most iconic clock dials into a contemporary wrist wear collection designed for women and men. Newgate’s most instantly recognisable clock is the Electric, a timepiece inspired by the ubiquitous 1950’s factory clocks that were prevalent in workspaces and public buildings across Britain in the mid-century. This design has evolved into a stand out family of

80 AUGUST2016

watches, available in a range of vintage inspired colour options, which echo the deep cases, strong numbered dials and 1950’s style hands of their interior namesakes. In all the Newgate Watch collection comprises over fifty diverse designs, with each watch crafted to become a statement piece on the wrist, echoing the large scale of the brand’s interior timepieces. Founder and creative director Jim Read, who launched the brand after having been ‘asked to leave’ art school in his late teens, now heads up Newgate’s design team. His passion for British product, honed during a childhood spent watching his antique dealer parents source vintage pieces from across the country, is the driving force behind Newgate’s innovative ranges; “In designing all of our collections I am always inspired by Great British design”, says Jim, “I love the smartness, quality, and the understated cool and elegance that British design stands for. Spending time in some of our great cities and walking through works of architectural brilliance around every corner is awe inspiring”. The passion for British architecture extends into the couples recent renovation project, a

beautiful Georgian townhouse which the creative duo have restored to its former glory, painstakingly reviving original features and reinstating its classical symmetry. The house has proved a calm and reflective space for Jim to design, and has also featured as the backdrop to a series of original short films that Newgate created to showcase the new watch range. Despite the watch collection only having been released for a little over a year, Newgate has already been recognised by key players in the watch industry as being a brand to watch. Industry influencers WatchPro recently honoured Newgate as Trailblazers within the WatchPro Hot 100 2016 awards, with editor James Buttery describing them as “a progressive and exciting brand”. Newgate Watches’ reputation for innovation is set to continue with the launch of two new watch collections late this year. Growing trend in women choosing midwifery led care Patient testimonial

Lucy Coe, lead midwife for the team, says: “We want to support women to choose the right birthing plan for them and offer both consultant led and midwifery led care. About 100 women a year choose to deliver under our experienced midwifery led care team and we are there every step of the way to guide them through their pregnancy journey.” Their midwives specialise in supporting low-risk women who want to have a natural birth and as a result 70% of women have the birthing experience they want (this is because sometimes nature gets in the way of the

“We chose to have our baby with the Kensington Wing after being highly recommended by a friend. Having been very nervous about labour and suffering with anxiety in my pregnancy it was very impor tant to me that I met the midwife who was going to be with us on the day. Lucy made sure I met all of the lovely midwives in advance, which went above and beyond my expectations, and I was very impressed with the level of kindness and understanding that all of the team showed me. Each time I went for an appointment I was reassured and comfor ted; I felt the care I received was not only very professional but most impor tantly personal. The day I went into labour I was cared for by the lovely Ali and Sophie. I had the most amazing birth experience and that is thanks to the very special team. I'm actually looking forward to doing it again with Baby number two, that's not something I thought I would have said a few months ago! I want to thank everyone involved in my birth experience for bringing Lola into the world so safely, which is something we will be eternally grateful for."

They guarantee women a highly personalised and holistic experience with access to alternative therapies that include reflexology, hypnobirthing and aromatherapy, as well as massage therapies (including baby massage) in a calming and modern environment. ensington’s Bupa Cromwell Hospital offers a wide range of therapy treatments using state of the art equipment, and they focus on both physical recovery and maximising quality of life. The Therapy team gained 100% satisfaction in its latest patient survey. 'Physio' is probably best known for treating conditions like back pain, sports injuries and rehabilitation after surgery, but there are a host of other conditions that can benefit from therapy treatment. People who have had a stroke, head injury, or suffer from a neurological condition like Parkinson's disease, can improve their motor neurone skills through therapy. Asthma sufferers can combat breathlessness, and children can be treated for everything from feeding problems to club foot and developmental delay. Therapy can also counter the side-effects of cancer and its treatment. Exercise programmes help cancer patients with daily activities, relatives are given guidance on supporting their loved one, and massage therapy can reduce pain, swelling, tension and stress. in the shade Sunburn can be painful. It is also a clear sign that your skin has been damaged by too much ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Over time this damage can build up and lead to skin cancer. It is crucial you protect your skin when the sun is at its most intense. Remember to... Spend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm Wear a T shirt, hat and sunglasses Use sunscreen with at least SPF 15 (the higher the better), with good UVA protection (the more stars the better) People most at risk of developing skin cancer include those who have… Fair skin Lots of moles or freckles Red or fair hair Had skin cancer before A family history of skin cancer

Don't forget to protect your eyes. Wear good quality, wrap around sunglasses. Wraparounds stop the sun from getting in at the sides. Buy these for children too – toy sunglasses can do more harm than good. When choosing sunglasses, look out for…. The CE or British Standard mark (BS EN 1836: 1997) A UV 400 label A label saying the glasses give 100% UV protection Sunscreens are crucial for protecting skin, but they will not protect us completely on their own. This is why using sunscreens together with shade or clothing can avoid sunburn. WHAT TO BUY The sun protection factor or SPF tells you the amount of protection the sunscreen gives against UVB radiation. National guidelines recommend you use at least factor 15 (the higher the better). Choose a sunscreen that has good protection against UVA rays as well as a high SPF. This is because both UVB and UVA rays can cause skin cancer. In the UK, the level of UVA protection might be shown in one of two ways…. USING SUNSCREEN Don't assume that because you have put on sunscreen, you can stay out without burning. No sunscreen, no matter how high the factor, can provide 100% protection. Therefore it is very important that you put on sunscreen generously and regularly. Do check the use by date. Most sunscreens have a shelf life of 2-3 years, and will last about 12-18 months after opening. So it is usually fine to use last year's, but not a bottle from 5 years ago! VITAMIN D AND THE SUN We all need some sunshine to make enough vitamin D to build and maintain strong bones. But it is not possible to give a one size fits all recommendation on how much sun is needed as this depends on a number of different factors. You do not need to sunbathe and should not have to redden or burn your skin to make enough vitamin D. Once you have healthy levels of Vitamin D, the body just gets rid of any extra. But some people are more at risk of low vitamin D levels, such as those with darker skin, people who wear clothing that fully covers them, pregnant women and older people.

Akasha Holistic Wellbeing Centre at Hotel Café Royal launches

New Cleopatra Inspired GoldTreatments Following in the footsteps of legendary beauty Cleopatra,Akasha Holistic Wellbeing Centre at Hotel Café Royal is delighted to announce an indulgent new Hammam treatment centred around the rejuvenating qualities of gold. Created exclusively for London’s Hotel Cafe Royal by cosmetic artisan spa brand La Sultane de Saba, the 23 Carat Gold Signature Hammam prevents the signs of ageing and leaves skin glowing.

P

laying a part in ancient beauty rituals, with the ancient Egyptians as its most famous fan, gold was used in Ayurvedic medicine for its healing qualities and ability to bring elasticity to the skin. The four-step ritual, which lasts either 75 or 90 minutes, will use a combination of 23 carat gold, mother of pearl and caviar extract which adorn the face and body throughout. The 23 Carat Gold Signature Hammam ritual commences on the hammam plinth surrounded by copper bowls filled with rose petals and flickering candles, which fill the air with an opulent fragrance. The sound of softly played Morrocan music and aromatic steam creates a fitting ambience for the welcome ceremony, which uses a mist of orange blossom, rose and rose geranium on the body alongside gemstones – to promote harmony throughout.

Once this is completed the Akasha therapists perform the following treatments: GOLD INFUSED BODY AND FACE EXFOLIATION The exfoliation starts with a full body cleanse using black soap blended with gold minerals. A traditional kessa glove is then used with a technique that massages the body whilst providing the most invigorating exfoliation with immediate and visible results. The 94 AUGUST2016

face is then cleansed with a 23 carat gold jelly and exfoliated with 23 carat gold anti-ageing scrub combining micronised pearls and corundum extract to soften and smooth the complexion. The experience is complete by a Pure Lava Clay & Gold hair treatment to remove impurities, smooth and condition the hair and scalp. GOLD BACK MASSAGE OR MINI GOLD FACIAL Following the exfoliation guests are given the choice of an indulgent massage or decadent facial. The Gold Back Massage uses 100% pure shea butter which is melted and combined with an oil of the guests’s choice which is steeped with gold minerals. The massage is an exceptional anti-ageing and nourishing skin treat whilst the deeply relaxing and muscle melting techniques provide the ultimate back massage. The first step of the Mini Gold Facial is an anti-ageing massage using a luscious honey and gold balm. The silky texutured balm is placed on the face, neck and décolleté using hypnotic moves that gently lift, smooth and plump the skin. Hot towels, infused with a facial tonic, remove the balm before a 23 carat gold liquid mask is applied during which the therapists starts the head and scalp massage. The final part of the facial is a gold exlixir serum, enriched with caviar and aragn oil, which is applied to the face alongside a 23 carat gold anti-ageing cream infused with mother of peal and hyaluronic acid. The ritual is completed with a ceremonial mist, after which guests are invited to spend time in the relaxation room with an invigorating fresh mint tea and sweet pastry. Guests booking the 90 minute 23 Carat Gold Signature Hammam can tailor their experience further with a longer Gold Back Massage or Full Gold Facial, or a combination of the two. 23 Carat Gold Signature Hammam from £140 (75 mins) and £160 (90 mins).

Revolutionary Weight Loss Treatment

Lots of us struggle with our weight and we have all tried diets, from the sensible to the downright silly. If you have a lot to lose it can seem an impossible dream to slim down fast and safely.

B

ut a new medical treatment developed by doctors is changing all that. It is called Alevere Therapy and it is completely non-surgical, yet it is helping patients lose up to two stones a month. And, crucially, they are enjoying that rapid weight loss without being left with lots of sagging skin or lumps and bumps. The therapy, which is now available in clinics nationwide, works by launching a two-pronged attack on fat. The diet part of it makes sure patients lose weight while staying healthy and has been designed so that they eat often and do not feel hungry. Then, state-of-the-art treatments are given to them to melt away stubborn areas of fat and smooth and tighten their skin. This combination means it is possible, unlike with traditional diets, to target those areas where the weight needs to come off. The result is not just a slim body but one that has been completely reshaped. Alevere operations director Anne Welford said: “Patients are having not just their bodies but their lives completely transformed by Alevere Therapy. It is a genuinely new and radical treatment that is helping people in ways they never believed was possible. Their new confidence is a joy to see.” Patients are losing an average of between 13-26 lbs a month (6-12 kg) on Alevere Therapy. To achieve that they eat a mix of normal foods and protein-based meal replacements, which are available in a range of sweet and savoury flavours and can be used to make all kinds of dishes, from pizza to cookies. Anne said: “The high-quality protein in our meals is combined with essential vitamins, minerals and fats so that our patients don’t feel hungry, don’t experience cravings and stay full of energy so they can exercise.” As their weight is falling, patients have regular clinic-based treatments. Medically-certified ultrasound using the latest technology helps melt fat from those resistant areas. At the same time, equipment developed in France tightens the patient’s skin. The diet is not a one-size-fits but is tailored to suit each individual. A doctor carries out a series of tests which are so accurate the patient can be told in advance how much weight they are likely to each week, and how long their full weight loss will take. Once the weight is lost, patients go onto a stabilisation programme to make sure they do not regain it and their new metabolic rate is worked out so they know exactly how much they can eat.

We are extremely proud of what we are doing and what our patients are achieving. If anyone wants to look round our clinics and talk to patients to decide whether Alevere Therapy is for them we are happy to arrange that. Just get in touch. SAYS ANNE 98 AUGUST2016

Lose your doubLe chin Gain a more contoured neck

Before

A

couple of months ago, a patient started telling me about a concert she had been to the night before. “It sounds amazing,” I told her. “Do you have any

pictures?” “Angela” took out her phone, and started swiping. It took me a while, but eventually I noticed something strange. There were pictures of the band, of the crowd, and of the group of friends she was with. But absolutely none of her. “No….” she said wistfully, when I pointed it out. “I hate being in pictures. It’s my double chin…” Over the past few years, I’d heard similar comments many times from patients. The age of the selfie and Instagram is tough on many people who are self-conscious about some aspect of their appearance. But facial features like double chins can cause particular upset and anxiety. The result of genetics for some people and weight gain for others, double chins are very ageing, because they change the shape of your face. And they are so difficult to hide. “Polo necks just draw attention to my chin,” “Angela” told me. “I’ve tried loads of different haircuts, but none of them really made a difference. For a while, I tried standing at a particular angle when people took my photo – but I just couldn’t bear to see the results. “Now I’d rather leave the room. But my family has started noticing that I won’t be photographed, AG UU GS UTS T2 20 01 16 6 5100 0A U

which is making me feel even worse…” Unfortunately, double chins are particularly hard to get rid of. They don’t always disappear with weight loss, and you can’t spot-exercise them away, despite thousands of Internet pages telling you otherwise. Until recently, the options with aesthetic medicine were limited to liposuction or fat-dissolving injections, which can be painful. The good news is that there’s now an easy, non-surgical solution. Fat freezing quite literally freezes your fat cells until they disintegrate – killing them off. Up until now, it’s been one of our treatments of choice for areas like love handles, backrolls and thighs, because it’s so effective at reducing stubborn fat that won’t disappear any other way. The problem has always been that the technology worked for large areas, so it wasn’t suitable for chins. But now, there’s a new double chin-busting device called the CoolSculpt Mini, which has been specially adapted to treat smaller pockets of fat, such as the area under the chin. Riverbanks is one of the first clinics in the UK to offer CoolSculpt Mini and we’ve been thrilled with it. Each session takes just half-an-hour, and you see results within three to four weeks. There’s no downtime – you can usually go straight back to work – and it’s non-invasive, with no surgery or needles involved. Best of all, because it’s not a new treatment – just a new area it can be applied to – it’s tried, tested,

safe and effective. The investment starts from £1,500 for a single treatment and our patients who have already undergone the treatment are already enjoying slimmer jawlines. “My face looks so different - I feel like I’ve lost 10 years,” “Angela” told me when I caught up with her recently. “I’ve had a radical haircut, because I don’t have to use my hair to cover up a double chin more. I feel great!” I asked her whether she’s happier to have her picture taken nowadays. “I put up a picture of myself on Facebook, and got loads of ‘likes’,” she laughed. “I could get used to that….” If that’s the kind of result you’re looking for, hit ‘reply’ to find out more. Your double chin can be gone before the end of the month. Warm regards,

Ravi

Swim to a healthier

you

A five point guide on why it’s healthy to swim

S

wimming is a great way to get your body fit and healthy. Whether you want to conquer stress, lose weight or tone your muscles, swimming could hold the key to many day-to-day problems. Here’s our quick guide on how swimming can benefit your health and even help you recover from injuries. STRESS RELIEF THROUGH SWIMMING Everyday life can be so stressful these days so it’s important to be able to spend time relaxing. It is easy to switch your focus from your day-to-day problems and concentrate on your swimming technique alone. The less time spent worrying about the issues that are causing your stress and the more time spent developing your swimming, the better. INJURY RECOVERY THROUGH SWIMMING It is widely accepted that swimming is a great way to recover from injuries. It is a non-load bearing sport, which means the joints are under far less pressure than they are in a sport such as running. Poor swimming technique, however, can cause injuries, so make sure you get expert supervision to make sure you’re swimming correctly. SWIMMING AS A SOURCE OF WEIGHT LOSS The key to losing weight is to train at the right intensity. Swimming allows you to do this far more than running, for example, where it’s far easier to raise your heart rate above the zone where it is possible to lose weight. Swimming will keep you in that zone and, with regular 20 minute sessions, you’ll be surprised at how quickly the weight will fall off. GETTING ALL-OVER BODY SHAPE BY SWIMMING Most of us are looking to tone all the muscles of the body, rather than just a certain area, and swimming is the perfect way to do this. Using the correct swimming technique ensures that virtually all of the key muscle groups receive a perfect workout. SELF-ESTEEM THROUGH SWIMMING Learning to swim from scratch as an adult, or going from a basic level to one much higher, is a significant achievement and one to be proud of. It can have a major effect on your personal confidence and self-esteem and give a major boost to your overall well-being. Having the determination and focus to stick with your lessons and achieve your goal is without doubt one of the major benefits of learning to swim properly. Don’t underestimate how good it could make you feel.

ounder and facialist Amanda Elias says “when working as a beauty therapist I saw so many clients, both male and female suffering with their skin but with many juggling their time between, family, work and other commitments, they simply didn’t have the time to visit the salon as often as they would like, this is where the idea came to provide a service which ships worldwide where you can also speak to a professional about your skin and receive free expert advice on which products from the brand would suit your skin”. Having attended college to study beauty therapy, Amanda specialised in facial care, she then went on to study skin science to have a deeper knowledge and understanding of the skin and how many different factors can contribute to the many different skin complaints that people can suffer from, Amanda says “skincare is my passion and I felt that getting a much deeper knowledge would really help me to give the best possible service to my customers”. Bravura London specialise in liquid exfoliators such as Glycolic Acid, Lactic Acid and Salicylic Acid which are combined with high quality, natural ingredients such as Aloe Vera, Coconut Oil, Rose Water and Lavender Extracts. Unlike scrubs, liquid exfoliators help to exfoliate

104 AUGUST2016

the skin by gently loosening the bond that holds the dead skin to the surface, this not only gives more superior results to a manual exfoliator but is gentler on the skin. As a brief example, Glycolic Acid works on the surface of the skin, helping to reduce any fine lines, discolouration and blemishes. Salicylic Acid works within the pores to help with acne, congested pores and blackheads while Lactic Acid is a humectant which means it can help increase moisture in the skin, great for dry or dehydrated skins. The products can all be used in conjunction with each other in order to treat a range of different skin complaints. The term “Acid Toning” is extremely popular right now and Bravura London have a choice of 3 acid based toners. Bravura London recently launched a sister company InkMedix which supplies a luxurious Tattoo Aftercare Oil, Amanda says “After I had a tattoo I was told to use nappy rash cream which I had quite a nasty reaction to, this lead me to research tattoo aftercare and I realised that these creams were actually pretty bad for tattoos and can lead to colour bleeds and colour loss, the range of aftercare out there were thick and gloopy, some contained essential oils which aren’t suitable for open wounds and so I decided to make my own, I then had friends asking if I would make some for them after they had a tattoo and pretty soon, Inkmedix was born, the highlight for us was when Kevin Paul, Ed Sheeran’s tattoo artist sent us a picture and a note to say how much Ed loves our aftercare”. Bravura London and InkMedix are both cruelty free and most of their products are suitable for vegans. Bravura London has a dedicated skincare advice page but further help is available through their contact page. Beginner's guide to yoga I

f you are looking for a more flexible, strong, capable body and a clear, positive heart and mind then this introduction to yoga will show you how to get started. Yoga is a great form of exercise that will improve your fitness, as well as aiding your mental wellbeing. THE ORIGINS OF YOGA Originating in the ancient East, yoga has gained massive popularity in the modern western world, becoming part of the chosen lifestyle of thousands seeking some real balance, health and well-being in their lives. Experiences of yoga can be close to nature, outdoors or a summer retreat in the West Country, but now more than ever you can discover wonderfully tranquil and well-equipped yoga studios in centre of London. There are yoga magazines, gorgeous yoga holidays and a rainbow of great yoga kit you can buy. But when it comes down to it, all you really need to benefit from the ancient wisdom of yoga is your own body, mind and spirit, some self-discipline, and a decent teacher to get you started. WHAT EXACTLY IS YOGA? ‘Yoga’ is a Sanskrit term meaning ‘to join, unite or yoke together’, and the essential purpose of yoga is to bring together body, mind and spirit into a harmonious whole. The central methods of yoga are physical postures or ‘asanas’ and movement, breathing techniques or ‘pranayama’ and meditation. Yoga includes guidance on healthy lifestyle, eating habits, mental attitude, and Ayurvedic medicine is also part of the Yogic path to health and balance. THE BENEFITS OF YOGA There are many benefits to the ancient practice of yoga both physical and mental, from better posture to greater self-acceptance. PHYSICAL BENEFITS OF YOGA Improved posture

108 AUGUST2016

etter sleep B Increased natural energy level and vitality Greater flexibility, strength and stamina Better balance Stronger immune system Pulse and respiratory rate decreases Blood pressure decreases Cardiovascular efficiency increases Respiratory efficiency increases Cholesterol decreases Cleansing and regulating of all the body’s systems Mental benefits of yoga Calm and clarity Greater confidence and generally more positive mood Sense of inner well-being and 'centredness’ Increased awareness of body and movement Counters depression and anxiety Ability to concentrate improves More self-acceptance Increased social skills Tips for yoga beginners If you are a yoga beginner or thinking about having a go then here are tips to get you started; some helpful advice for any yoga beginner. 1. FIND A GOOD YOGA TEACHER It is much easier and more enjoyable, to learn yoga from an experienced, qualified, real-three-dimensionalliving-breathing person, rather than from a book or dvd. Especially at the beginning, a teacher’s presence and ability to actually see you and respond to what you are doing, is essential for building your confidence that you are doing yoga properly. 2. RESPECT YOUR BODY’S INNER WISDOM AND LIMITATIONS Don’t push yourself to do anything that feels dangerous or wrong for you. This is ‘Ahimsa’, the practice of non-harm, which is essential to skilful and beneficial practice of yoga. Talk to your teacher and a health professional if you are pregnant or have

particular injuries such as to the knees or spine, or any serious medical condition. Find out which poses to avoid at certain times, and which will be beneficial for you. Be aware of contraindications relevant to your specific circumstances. 3. BREATHE Yoga is all about finding a healthier, deeper harmony between our body and mind, and our breathing is central to this. Breathe into your whole body in the poses, and relax. There is a lot to learn about healthy breathing in yoga. 4. EATING AND DRINKING AND YOGA It is advisable not to eat for one or two hours before yoga practice, and to drink only small amounts of water beforehand and do not drink during practice. Avoid alcohol, sugar or caffeine before yoga. 5.WEAR LOOSE COMFORTABLE CLOTHING (THAT STAYS ON) You will stretch your body in all directions and so you don’t want to wear anything that will dig in or restrict your movement. At some point you are likely to bend your body right over and also turn upside down, so it saves wriggling about or exposing more that you wish to if you wear stretch fit gear. For women in particular, tops that won’t fall down over your head in a shoulder stand might be more relaxing to wear, for example! If you prefer looser fit clothes that may slip, make sure you have substantial underwear on. 6. MAKE PRACTICE FREQUENT Little and often is more effective than occasional long sessions of yoga. Even 15 minutes a day of a few well-chosen poses can have a very positive effect on your physical, emotional and mental well-being. A regular discipline will reap more benefits, as that way the body begins to feel comfortable and familiar with the process and gradually becomes more flexible and subtly aware of the sensations, rather than ‘starting from cold’ again once in a while .

Light-up your

outdoor space When you spend time outdoors, entertaining your family and friends, you’ll need adequate lighting to illuminate your outside space.

W

hether you’re sitting outside on your patio area, or you wish to place a spotlight on specific areas of your garden, outdoor lighting can serve these purposes. You have a variety of options to suit your individual tastes, the size of your outdoor space, and its purpose. It’s important to consider what you need and how you will use the lighting, and with so many benefits to outdoor lighting, you can add beauty, function and safety to your outdoor areas.

Primary points to deciding on your outside lighting are 1.SAFETY Use a combination of uplights as well as lights installed on outdoor structures to illuminate your seating areas effectively. Outdoor lighting can add safety in a variety of ways. Light pathways to ensure that people navigate these areas safely. Use zone lighting to illuminate areas of your garden and landscape for night-time use. Zone lighting can be effective for lighting your patio, swimming pool or 114 AUGUST2016

outdoor seating area. Illuminate driveways, garages and entryways to keep your outdoor space safe after dark. The more lights, the safer your outdoor areas will be. 2. SECURITY A well-lit driveway and garden presents a feeling of security and maintenance. When you keep your outdoor areas illuminated, you present a feeling of care and involvement. Install lights with motion detectors so they illuminate when motion activates them. A dark garden can be splashed with bright lights when someone walks through – this can be helpful to deter would-be criminals from trespassing on your property. 3. COMFORT Extend your living area into your garden, particularly if you entertain outdoors on a regular basis. If you have a patio with seating, add

comfortable and attractive lighting to enable you to use these areas after dark. The ambience of outdoor seating can be pleasant and inviting, especially when you feature attractive outdoor lighting that adds to your outdoor decor. Use a combination of lights installed on outdoor structures to illuminate your seating areas effectively. 4. DECOR Showcase and highlight specific areas with decorative lighting. By installing lights around your garden in various spots, you pull the eye to these areas and display them attractively. Lighting can be a wonderful way to display planting areas or flower gardens. Install mood lighting along outdoor buildings to add pleasant splashes of light. You can even add low-voltage exterior lights to trees and shrubs outdoors to illuminate planting areas and add beautiful accents to your exterior areas. 5. CURB APPEAL A well-lit home presents a cared-for impression to your neighbours and visitors. Your house will appear warm and inviting, and in contrast to a dark and drab home, your illuminated home will draw people in and offer a warm refuge for family and friends. Regardless of the purpose of your outdoor lighting, the benefits are all positive. From increasing safety and security to creating a warm and inviting environment, adding outdoor lighting will enhance and beautify your home.

Straight from

the horses mouth Just once in a while something catches my eye that is contemporary but has its origins in tradition. Just by chance I was told about an amazing handmade horses head, made entirely of strips of mild steel, not far from my home town, Tring.

C

aptivated, I met the creator Charles Elliott in his traditional blacksmith forge. It was no surprise to learn that he comes from a long line of artists and sculptors, and his inspired depiction of horses is a tribute to his wife Abbe Elliott, a Professional British Showjumper. She travels internationally jumping horses for Great Britain

116 AUGUST2016

and Charles wanted to create an equestrian related piece to compliment her achievements. The head of the horse attracted great attention and a one-off version was made as a gift to a charity auction. Charles had in mind a piece that could be admired within the home, which would be bold and catch your eye as you walk into a room, and have a textured finish to give the piece depth, with the face to show character and expression. In this case the look seems to be a state of ‘fight or flight’, showing elements of fear but at the same time speed and courage. As every model Charles creates, by its very nature and construction, is different the variations and positioning of them is without boundaries; scaled down models with lights inside for a stable yard or entrance, life-size for the tops of gate posts or simply whatever size you choose as an indoor object of beauty. As I have found with contemporary furniture makers, our young artists and craftsmen across the board today have inspirational ideas in design and technique to delight generations to come, as those masters in the past have done for us. We are lucky, and so am I, as I have just managed to reign in few of Charles’s horses. THE FINEST INTERIOR DESIGN IS A CONSUMABLE PRIVILEGE, AVAILABLE FOR EVERYONE,

STEPHEN RYAN EXPLAINS TO ‘THE LIFE MAGAZINES’. Stephen Ryan has been decorating on the national and international design scene for some thirty six years. STEPHEN RYAN DESIGN & DECORATION

was founded in 1993 when Stephen left his tenure as Chief Designer for one of the most important names in British interior design, David Hicks.

What was it like working with the legendary David Hicks?

David Hicks was scholarly in the art of design and decoration. Never fully trained (he couldn’t draw a scaled plan) , he instinctively knew what would work in a room in scale, and his colour compositions were groundbreaking in his heyday. I learnt to appreciate the art of stylish juxtaposition and how one for example might mix fine C18th furniture with bold modern abstract art, maybe on a background of melon and baby pink!

‘AN INTERIOR IS THE NATURAL PROJECTION OF THE SOUL‘ Coco Chanel

How do you think interior design has evolved over time? My time at David Hicks International consisted of being the arbiter of the ‘House Style’ , which was fine at the time, but I now completely eschew this philosophy, as whilst there are great designers today purveying their particular ‘on trend - house style’ I do believe that clients have their own mind and want truly bespoke solutions.

What makes a good interior designer?

At Stephen Ryan Design and Decoration, we pride ourselves as a small ‘hands on’ practise on delivering these dreams whether they are in a truly international contemporary aesthetic, or a completely British, classical and traditional style. We strive for a timeless quality in all our design projects.

Who should hire an interior designer?

Anyone and everyone. Whether it is a small room remedy or a large scale refurbishment project, working with a professional interior design practise will save you a great deal of money and time, avoiding the expensive mistakes that are often innocently made. The wrong size, the wrong colour, the wrong scale. the wrong quality, are avoided by using a trained professional.

What is your advice for someone about to embark on a design and decoration project?

I suggest that one should research carefully, and meet your prospective designer, and a good place to start has to be the BIID (British Institute of Interior Design). This is a long established professional body that has rigorously vetted, long standing design practises and new designers within it’s membership. Another excellent research source is ‘THE LIST’ , a new initiative from ‘House and Garden’ Magazine.

Denim and Bone New art & design brand Denim and Bone spins interior décor on its head and lets the skeletons out of the closet by introducing a brand new range of taxidermy with a twist.

D

enim and Bone is a new and unique art & design brand specialising in bespoke interior décor. Artist Daisy Harkness uses animal skulls as a unique focal point and transforms them from a dated form of taxidermy into stunning wall art, made to be the centrepiece of any stylish interior. From her treehouse studio in the Kent countryside, Daisy meticulously hand designs her skulls using an array of mixed media materials including, glass beading, hand made ceramics, glass mosaic, semi precious stones and gold leaf.

122 AUGUST2016

The unusual yet stunning pieces she creates would make any plain skull envious. Daisy found inspiration for her artworks at home and abroad. Having a ceramicist mother, she created ceramics from an early age. Later she found inspiration from around the world while on her travels. Through her enthusiasm and love for texture, colour and newly found techniques she has become the artist she is today. Daisy has a flare for creation, not only does she appeal to the art world but also the fashion world. Using the same idea of breathing life into unloved objects, Daisy finds out of the ordinary, vintage jackets and embellishes them. Using beautiful, ethnic fabrics, hand sewn embroidery and beading she gives them a new lease of life. Daisy also sells jewellery and belts, beautifully hand crafted in Afghanistan and Pakistan, that will make the perfect addition to your summer or winter wardrobe. She described her sense of style as “sophisticated and bohemian with a hint of festival chic.”

“I loved all the fabrics and accessories I found along my travels but wanted to incorporate them into my wardrobe at home…creating my bespoke jackets, originally for myself, showed I could include the bohemian, hippie vibe into my own style.” “Not only are my one of a kind jackets and accessories perfect for festival goers and extroverts but also the sophisticated, cosmopolitan girl about town.” Daisy has worked hard to create a luxury, bohemian brand and wishes to see it expand globally and for her artworks to be seen in galleries and exhibitions in the future. She would also love to keep travelling so she can continue discovering what other treasures and inspiration the world may hold. Experience harmonious outdoor sound with

Soundscene 3

Until now it has been difficult to find speakers that provide a range of benefits for the outdoor listener and it‘s filling this demand that is quickly turning the industries sights onto Bayan Audio and after the astoundingly positive response they received over the Soundscene 3 it is no surprise why.

T

he Soundscene is an outdoor wireless speaker system that you can link together to create a wireless network of sound. It doesn’t rely on Wi-Fi, is weatherproof and sounds fantastic. “It’s clear from the response we’ve received that this was a product that was missing from the market and the Soundscene has delivered and exceeded the expectations of everyone. I am still met with shock when I explain the properties of the speaker and even more so when we pour water onto it to demonstrate its resistance. Although its not submergible, the Soundscene can hold it’s own against the dynamic British summers.” Says Crystal Rosen, Events and Marketing Manager. As well as being ruggedized, the Soundscene can be linked together. “Individually, they are fantastic speakers and hold all of the components of most wireless speakers and more.”

124 AUGUST2016

Each speaker has the option to link to another via its Transmit and Receive functions which can be done 8 times to create a wireless network of sound around your garden. “As we use radio frequency there are no limitations as to where the speakers can go because they don’t rely on Wifi so it doesn’t matter if you’re camping, at home or abroad even. The speakers can be placed 100ft apart and all you need is to connect your device to the speaker via Bluetooth or Aux and press link, the speaker will do the rest.” The Soundscene also boasts a power out USB for charging and is shockproof if dropped. “With the easy set up, the harmonious sound you get when you link all 8 together and its sheer resistance, all of it’s components together create this fantastic product that will fill gardens with music for many years to come” says Crystal. “We’re starting to exhibit at more shows in an effort to offer the opportunity to listen and see our products first hand. It’s a great opportunity to gauge a general consensus towards a product or feature and relay that back to the team. We never hard sell, we let the products speak for themselves. We’ll be exhibiting at Southampton Boat Show this year for the first time as well as The Westfield Tech Showcase, Grand Designs NEC and Ideal Home Show Christmas and welcome you to join us and see for yourselves” You can also see a product demonstration video of the Soundscene on the website www.bayanaudio.com and for further, technical information you can contact info@bayanaudio.com to speak to the team directly.

The changing face of art Artist, Ghizlan El Glaoui’s passion for art began as a child, where she spent many happy hours in her father’s art studio.

T

he granddaughter of ‘Lord of the Atlas’, Thami El Mezouari El Glaoui, the last Pacha of Marrakech, and daughter of renowned Moroccan artist Hassan El Glaoui, Ghizlan has a former British Prime Minister to thank for her early immersion into art. ‘My grandfather was an avid art collector but he was reluctant to let my father study art,’ explains Ghizlan. ‘It was my grandfather’s friend, Sir Winston Churchill, a keen painter himself, who helped persuade him otherwise when he saw my father’s paintings.’ In her father’s art studio - encouraged by her mother, a former leading Givenchy model - Ghizlan enjoyed posing for portraits, becoming Hassan’s muse and igniting her own fascination with faces. These inspirational surroundings from her childhood led Ghizlan to study Arts at the Academie Charpentier and influenced her distinctive portraiture painting style, which marries ancient art techniques with modern LED lighting technology. ‘Coming from my family, I have a high opinion of beauty in my mind,’ says Ghizlan. ‘I have always admired the way the beauty of women has been represented and changed through art. I want to make women shine and I work with technology to allow that.’ Drawing on her rich Berber heritage, Ghizlan explores mosaics through clever paint techniques on canvas, which she illuminates from behind to give them a new dimension and a fresh perspective. “Mosaics are part of my family’s legacy,” she says. “They are in my mind when I paint, bringing me back to my roots and the art, culture of colours of Morocco.” Painting with ‘the golden ratio’ a geometrical method often employed

126 AUGUST2016

in fresco art, Ghizlan captures the essence of her subjects through vivid colours, oils, traditional tempuras and luminescent metallic paints on canvas. “It is also known as the ‘divine proportion’,” explains Ghizlan. “It is the hidden maths behind beauty and designers and artists since the Rennaissance have used it.” Working with a lighting designer, Ghizlan uses a mix of warm and cold light that filters through the canvas to illuminate her portraits and create an ever-changing image. The colour of the lighting can be altered (through an ipad or remote control) according to preference, so that the inter-active artworks take on a different perspective depending on the time of day. The result is a series of unique paintings, reminiscent of the glittering mosaics of the Byzantine Empire. “When you have a portrait in your house, it’s static and doesn’t change,” says Ghizlan. “My portraits change as they’re illuminated – bright during the day and abstract at night. It is a piece of artwork but also an installation that alters with the time of the day or the mood of whoever is in the room.” Offering an innovative way to add interest to a room scheme, the paintings are available with a variety of framing options and work well as large-scale pieces in commercial premises or residential homes. Shepherd’s Huts and Summer Houses creating the idyllic English garden retreat by Blackdown Shepherd Huts

Shepherd’s huts are very much part of English history, and Blackdown Shepherd Huts have been inspired by the traditional shepherd’s huts of yesteryear to create the ultimate dream huts for the English garden.

uilt to last for generations to come, Blackdown create their huts in their workshop in Ilminster, Somerset. The huts come with an oakclad or metal-clad exterior and include a bathroom and a kitchen, or simply a log-burner. Recent customers have purchased shepherd huts for a range of purposes - from summer houses and glamping businesses, to saunas and garden offices. Emma Warren is a customer of Blackdown, and she purchased her hut to create Dimpsey Glamping in Somerset. Dimpsey is now a 5* luxury retreat, and Emma describes her idyllic hut as “an all-in experience helping busy people to get some quality time together”. Based on Emma’s farm in the Blackdown Hills in Somerset, the hut is also a family retreat, used as an extension of their English farmhouse to create some mindful space for Emma, her husband, or their teenage boys. Historically, shepherd’s huts were mobile structures which could be moved around the field to give the shepherd shelter as he tended his flock through the lambing season. Currently, however, Blackdown customers have been using as children’s playrooms, garden retreats, summer houses, pool changing rooms, writing dens, offices, or simply as extra luxury

LUXURY BATHROOM GUIDE

Relax, Renew and Refresh

We love bathrooms, especially beautiful and spa-like ones where we can create our own little oasis at home.Whether you have your own bathroom retreat or are looking to create a new one, you’re just a few ideas, products, and steps away from the bathroom of your dreams.

B

athroom design has come a long way in the last 20 years. Whilst the importance of functionality remains; many more homeowners are now spending time and money to ensure striking aesthetics within their bathroom. Designer bathrooms are a common site in many homes and such a project can add real value to the property. If you are seeking to create a modern designer bathroom look in your home then the tips below will help you achieve that goal.

A STYLISH BATH The first bathroom suite item to deal with is the bathtub. This is the piece of furniture that you will get the most enjoyment from and it is important to ensure that it provides comfort to the user. However, going for a practical model doesn’t mean that you have to sacrifice style and there is a vast range of bathroom models, from twin baths that allow two people to bathe side by side, to corner baths that serve to maximise available space. If you prefer the more traditional rectangle shaped bath, there are still options available that provide that designer feel. Going for a separate tap installation also serves to create a unique look. THE SHOWER OPTION Whether you have enough space to install both a bathtub and a shower, or prefer to just have the latter in your bathroom; your choice of design will have a huge impact on the room. Quadrant shower enclosures that fit into the corner of the room with an arc shaped glass enclosing the two sides, give an elegant finishing look to the suite. If you are planning to splurge on your bathroom and you have the space, you might like to consider a walk-in shower enclosure. Walk-ins give you greater mobility and access, and look grand as well as plenty of space to 138 AUGUST2016

really relax and unwind. It is a good idea to have glass on as many sides of the shower enclosure as the bathroom allows. This will greatly help to increase the light in the room, which will in turn give the illusion of spaciousness. AN APPEALING BASIN Although you probably consider the bath or shower as being the most important of furniture in your bathroom, it is also the basin that acts as a central item in designer bathrooms. This is due to the fact that it will almost always have a mirror placed above it, which immediately draws the attention of anyone who enters the room. As such it is important to install a basin that looks fantastic. One option is to fit a vanity unit, with the basin sunk in so that it is flush with the surface. Alternatively you could add to the aesthetics by mounting the basin on top of the vanity unit and go for an unusual design, such as a funnel shaped basin. However, if you are going for an ultra-modern look and want to keep furniture down to a minimum, then a vanity unit may not be the right choice for you. In such instances a hovering sink with hidden pipes is a good option. If you have a big enough bathroom and enough wall space, you could even decide to go for the double sink, which not only look great, but are also useful in a busy household. LUXURY TOUCHES Carefully coordinate your towels with the colour of the walls and bathroom suite. Add a stylish looking towel rail electric element to heat up the towels for added luxury, which also comes with an added advantage of warming up your bathroom. Decanting your soap and shower products into matching bottles is a simple way to create a stylish look in your bathroom. Coordinate other accessories such as the toilet roll holder and toothbrush holder. Get a sleek and stylish cabinet or matching boxes to hide away less attractive products or those you don’t want to show. A well-chosen bathroom rug, a potted plant in the corner, or a framed picture hung on an empty wall; small pieces which can completely revamp the look of your suite. Strike a balance by picking just a few significant pieces of bathroom furniture which will contain a certain colour. Offset it by choosing a neutral or contrasting colour in other accessories. By ensuring that your accessories are attractive and functional, along with some good, soft lighting, you can create a calm and relaxing retreat, right inside your home.

LUXURY BATHROOM GUIDE

“If you’re thinking about refurbishing your bathroom – read this” AUGUST 2016, CLAPHAM, SOUTH WEST LONDON

Hugh had a very nice 4 bed, 2 bath home in Battersea, just off Clapham Common. He had recently had his loft converted, and they’d added a 5th bedroom and 3rd bathroom. He spared no expense on all the fittings & fixtures, going for a large rainfall shower head, body jets in the shower, a high pressure shower valve and a lovely deep claw foot bath.

T

his was going to be Hugh and his wife’s sanctuary, “their space” away from the kids. Unfortunately, they’ve built themselves a bathroom they could admire but never use... The water trickled out of the shower head like it was on slow motion, the jets were unusable, the bath took hours to fill. They also couldn’t have more than 1 tap open at a time either, and with 5 people living in the house it was a constant source of irritation and bad temper. What was the problem? Simple. Low water pressure. But wouldn’t they 'know' if they had low water pressure problem before? Well, here’s the thing. LOW WATER PRESSURE CAN OFTEN GO UNNOTICED FOR A NUMBER OF REASONS You may not have changed your bathroom in years and everything may be ‘working fine’, until you modernise your fixtures & fittings then suddenly realise your pressure isn’t good enough Switching to pressurised systems as opposed to tank-fed systems (meaning that more and more people are drawing directly off the mains and eating up all the pressure in the water), Your water company turning down the pressure on purpose, because it puts less pressure on their pipework underground, meaning fewer

roads need to be dug up, and fewer expensive repairs need to be carried out. All the building work going on around you, lofts, basements etc, all had an impact on the overall water pressure in your area Hugh’s plumber never checked whether the water pressure was sufficient for a large rain dance shower head, the body jets, or to fill a deep luxury bath. And this is a common thing, too. “Many of on my clients discover they had a low water pressure problem only after they had refurbished their bathrooms” explains local plumber Brad Kuhlmey. “By that time it’s often costlier to put right or at the very least it means unexpected bill at the end of a project to put things right. Which usually hasn’t been budgeted for.” Brad is one of the few plumbers that actually always checks the water pressure before he starts working on a new bathroom. “Hugh’s disappointment and extra bill could have been easily avoided by a simple Bucket Test...” explains Brad further. If you’re wondering you might have low water pressure problem yourself, this is how you can test it: 1. Take a 10l bucket and a stop watch to your bathroom. 2. Place the bucket under your kitchen cold tap or garden tap. 3. Open the tap and time how long it takes to fill the bucket . If the bucket takes 1 minute to fill, then you have 10l/min flow rate You want a flow rate of over 20l/min, if you don’t have that then you’ll need to fix it with one of the solutions that are available to you. Here’s an easy way to get your free copy of Low Water Pressure Solutions Guide. If after you’ve run the Bucket Test you discover that your water pressure is not what it should be, download your free Low Water Pressure Solutions Guide and find the best solution that will work for your bathroom. Just go online and we will send the guide to you today: www.LowWaterPressureSolutions.com

As a general rule, if you want to make a bathroom feel more spacious, opt for larger and lighter tiles. If you are looking to create a contemporary feel then take a look at rectified tiles, thinner grout lines will ensure that your bathroom has a crisp and sleek finish. Go for consistency - very often less is more when it comes to the loft ensuite, to open up what could appear to be quite an awkward space keep your wall and floor tiling the same. This way your eye will not distinguish where two different tiles might meet, the seamless finish will help to make the space feel much bigger too. Go for a touch of “wow” - you might want to think about some very clever design ideas such as large and light tiles but you also need to have some fun with your new bathroom too. Perhaps think about adding some “wow” factor decorative tiles, to create an element of interest in the room. Decorative tiles in your shower and behind a basin will add personality to the bathroom and inject just the right amount of décor. Go for a wet floor - sloping ceilings in a loft can mean that you really need to think about how to maximise the height in the room, particularly when it comes to the shower. Opting for a wet floor in the shower area will help you to retain as much height as possible. It's also important to think about running the same floor tiles in to your shower and concealing your shower tray, to help make the space feel bigger and to create a seamless walkin design. 140 AUGUST2016

Go for underfloor heating - think about adding underfloor heating to dry up any moisture in your bathroom, this is particularly important if you’re opting for a wet floor in your new loft ensuite. Go for sensible storage - space is possibly limited in your new ensuite, create alcoves in the shower, add in recessed mirror cabinets and choose vanity units with deep drawers for extra storage too. Go for feature lighting - you may be limited on the amount of ceiling lights in your ensuite, it’s therefore more important than ever to think about feature lighting. Wall lights, floor lights and alcove lighting should all be considered. Extra lighting in drawers and around the mirror will help to illuminate the space when you need it too. Go careful with the space - it’s really important that you think about the usability of the space. Do you have enough sitting and standing height in front of the toilet? Can you comfortably open the drawers of your vanity unit? These are all questions that you should be asking yourself. Go for wall hung - opting for a wall hung basin and wc will help to maximize the available space in your new ensuite, wall hung furniture and sanitaryware will create extra space by opening up the floor space that is on show in the room. Go for large mirrors - make sure that your new bathroom features large mirrors, they will help to reflect the natural light and open up the space. Stylish flooring ideas Finding the perfect floor design for your bathroom will add the finishing touch to your brand new look. A bathroom floor needs to be both durable and stylish to meet all of your needs and should give your bathroom a strong and solid foundation.

W

ith so much choice available, it can be hard to decide on one option. Take into consideration your daily routine and lifestyle: Do you have children who will need a slip-free and hardwearing floor? Or do you have a glamorous and grown-up bathroom suite that requires an equally chic floor? Don’t be afraid to try unusual materials, such as wood, which can work well in a bathroom, despite any concerns you might have about the humid conditions affecting the wood. Try hardwood, laminate or PVC flooring to get the same effect, but without the damp results. Floors in marble, granite or polished concrete will also create a dramatic effect and lend a chic, polished finish to your bathroom. These are all hard-wearing materials that will look stunning and last for years. For something truly unique, try cork or rubber. Popular in the 1960s and 1970s, cork is back in a big way and is one of the most ecofriendly floor options around. Rubber is warm, waterproof and easy to keep clean, so a great option for anyone with children. Solid wood or laminate floors aren’t usually suitable for bathrooms as the humidity will cause the material to discolour, swell and warp. But hardwood floorings, such as teak and bamboo, can work well (double-check with the manufacturer first) and engineered wood and bathroom-specific laminate - made with PVC - are designed to withstand moisture.

Tile with style

hoosing the right tiles for your bathroom needs some careful consideration. With so many varieties on the market, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by the choice on offer. Choose from ceramic, slate, glass and metal tiles, plain or patterned, large and small, smooth or textured. The options are seemingly endless. So, to help you through the decision process, we’ve put together some practical tips, making finding the perfect tiles for you bathroom, a breeze CERAMIC OR NATURAL STONE TILES? Ceramic tiles are the most popular by a long way. They’re durable, their glazed surface makes them highly resistant to harbouring germs, they’re usually very easy to keep clean, and come in styles to suit every taste. If you opt for ceramics, the most important thing to be aware of is that they do tend to vary from lot to lot, so make sure all the boxes you buy are stamped with the same lot number. But if you’d rather try something different... Glazed terracotta tiles are hugely popular right now with the trend for Mediterranean style bathrooms. Good quality terracotta is not only gorgeously rustic, it’ll last virtually forever, but can be hard to find. So the cheapest option might not be the best. Natural stone tiles like granite, slate, marble and even terrazzo (composed of marble chips imbedded in concrete and polished smooth) are beautiful, distinctive, and luxurious. They’ll cost you though. And these materials tend to be porous, so you may need to apply a seal to stop the tiles absorbing water. Make sure you discuss this with the supplier before you buy. Glass, metal, and porcelain tiles look brilliant if installed properly – but that’s easier said than done. Unless you’re really a dab hand at DIY you might want to leave the fitting of these to the experts. ADD TEXTURE AND INTEREST WITH BATHROOM TILES With the majority of bathroom suites being sleek and white, tiles are a

148 AUGUST2016

great way to add texture and interest into a room that can otherwise, look fairly clinical. If you’re talking floor tiles, texture is a must. It sounds like common sense, but many buyers are still seduced by lovely shiny tiles and then end up skidding all over the place every time the floor’s wet. Generally, the rougher the texture, the less slippery the tile when wet. When it comes to wall tiles, shiny tiles look chic and sleek and reflect light, making them a good option when in small or dark spaces. On the other hand, embossed tiles can be a smart way of adding interest to your walls and reducing starkness, especially if your tiles are in only one or two colours. CONSIDER COLOURFUL OR PATTERNED BATHROOM TILES It goes without saying that white is by far the most popular colour choice for bathroom tiles. White tiles are fresh-looking, classic, and reflect light to give the illusion of a more spacious, lighter room. If you’re worried about the room looking too stark add dark or patterned towels and other accessories to introduce splashes of colour while retaining the clean minimalist look. Colourful or patterned tiles can be used to add detail here and there, or make a bold statement when used to cover the entire wall. They tend to look best contrasted with simpler bathroom fixtures. SMALLER BATHROOMS LOOK BETTER WITH SMALLER TILES Generally, the more compact the bathroom the smaller the tiles should be, especially if there’s not much space between your sink, toilet, and tub. Smaller tiles will also require less cutting to fit around objects and make for a more flowing feel. If you’re lucky enough to have a big bathroom, large tiles give a sleek look with less exposed grouting in between. Borders or panels of smaller tiles can look fantastic in complimentary or contrasting colours.

COMPETITION

Unique new shooting competition ‘The Sunseeker Boodles Cup’ offers neverbefore-seen glittering prize fund

L

uxury brands Sunseeker London and Boodles have joined forces with The Royal Berkshire Shooting School to launch a spectacular clay shooting competition that will culminate in the overall winner choosing either a yacht charter for 8 guests courtesy of Sunseeker London or a piece of fine jewellery from Boodles, each worth approximately £80,000. For a chance of winning one of these extraordinary prizes, entrants need to qualify for one of 20 places, then at the final, shoot 23 or more of the 25 birds. The overall winner can choose either a 7-day holiday aboard a fully catered and crewed Sunseeker yacht in the Cote d'Azur or an exquisite piece of Boodles jewellery. If no-one shoots 23 birds, then

the next highest scoring shooter will take home £5,000 courtesy of The Royal Berkshire Shooting School – the largest ever cash prize in a British clay shooting competition. In addition, the entrant scoring the highest out of 100 birds each week during the qualifiers will be invited to the final to shoot-off for a chance to win an exclusive, money-can’t-buy Ultimate Shoot Dinner for eight people hosted by wine writer Will Lyons worth £10,000 courtesy of Berry Bros. & Rudd. The Sunseeker Boodles Cup will officially open on Saturday 1 October 2016 and run throughout the winter until Saturday 28 January 2017, giving entrants four months to qualify. Competitors are able to enter as many times as they wish. Entry costs just £50, which includes 50 warm-up birds plus two attempts at the sequence. The Royal Berkshire Shooting School’s Managing Director Dylan Williams commented: “This world-class competition will appeal to both game and clay shooters. Designed to simulate high pheasants, the clay sequence has been devised by our very own Robert Cross, who is renowned for his skill in replicating the most challenging birds. The sequence is difficult – and once you add a good helping of pressure at the final it will certainly be challenging! Being able to keep a cool head and remembering foot work will be key to winning.” Sunseeker London’s Managing Director David Lewis added: “The Sunseeker London Group is delighted to co-sponsor this amazing competition. The top gun will be awarded a choice of two luxury items that represent the single largest prize-fund of any non-professional shooting competition currently in the world and we are proud to be involved with such an innovative and inspiring event.” Boodles’ Director James Amos added: “The Directors of Boodles are all very excited about the upcoming Sunseeker Boodles Cup. Not only is it a first for the jewellery industry, but it is a good chance for us all to get some much needed practice on the high tower at The Royal Berkshire Shooting School. We’re delighted to be involved in this new international shooting competition, and especially with Sunseeker with whom we have a longstanding friendship.” THE DETAILS For more information visit: www.rbss.co.uk See the website for full terms and conditions
