February 5th 2015 will see the first ever Harry Potter Book Night. This exciting event will give new and existing fans a chance to share the wonder of J.K. Rowling’s unforgettable stories and, most excitingly, to introduce the next generation of readers to the unparalleled magic of Harry Potter. You are hereby invited to embrace the magic and banish the winter blues! London Art Fair, the UK’s premier Fair for Modern British and contemporary art, kicks off the cultural calendar with its 27th edition at the Business Design Centre this month. The Fair presents a unique overview of the art world, with 128 exhibitors ranging from established UK-based Modern British and contemporary galleries to innovative emerging spaces in Art Projects. Begin your own journey of discovery at the 2015 London Boat Show. This world-renowned event is where adventure starts, pioneers meet and innovation shines. Immerse yourself in the elements and explore a world of boating, brand new craft being unveiled globally, the very latest in technology and show stopping experiences that will really capture your imagination. With their budget of around £25m and a wish list that includes a prime central London location, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have set their sights on a penthouse in Marylebone. Ten years ago, that would have been unlikely, Marylebone was a cut-through area with only prestigious Waitrose on offer. But things have gone mad in the past year or two, helped massively by what Galliard Homes call “the Firehouse effect.” Britain’s 20 priciest addresses are, unsurprisingly, all in London with Kensington Palace Gardens taking the top spot. The value of Britain’s most expensive streets has grown 12.9 per cent, nearly twice the 6.6 per cent national average. This gives you just a small taste of exciting events & articles featured in this month’s issue...

et ready. The head of Volkswagen Group design confirmed to TopGear.com that work on the next Bugatti model is well underway, with an expected launch in early 2016. Walter de Silva, who has headed up VW Group’s design since 2007, said “we’re working hard at Bugatti, but don’t worry, it’s coming. I cannot predict exactly, but at the end of 2015 or early 2016, we’ll see the new Bugatti.” De Silva wouldn’t confirm exactly what form this new car would take, but did concede that it “won’t be a Veyron
the technology for the new Bugatti. We’re developing a few different concepts at the moment, working together with the engineers and designers at the same time. Bugatti is something that in the end is a car, OK, but it’s a car that is a lifestyle. Bugatti is a part of your sensitivity, of your feeling,” de Silva added. So what do we know, then? Earlier this year, Bugatti boss Dr Wolfgang Schreiber told that the company would not build a ‘SuperVeyron’ or indeed a production version of the 2009 Galibier concept (pictured above). “We have
Head of VW Group design confirms next hypercar is on its way. And it will be ‘art’ replacement, it’ll be more than that. We’re investigating all avenues at the moment”. He remained confident, however, it will be something incredible. “For me, Bugatti is not a car,” de Silva said, “it is a piece of art. You have to understand this. You are in another range when you talk about Bugatti. No, forget that, you play in another league with Bugatti. When you buy a Bugatti, you buy a piece of art. It’s a story, and I would like to transfer the Bugatti idea in this way.” Tech-wise, again, de Silva remained tight-lipped, but did say how the company is putting “a lot of attention in

Everyone knows that Bugatti is the ultimate super sportscar.” Whatever this new car is, it will have to ‘redefine the benchmarks’, he added. And let us not forget, those benchmarks have been set just about as high as possible... Watch this space! www.bugatti.com

POST POP:
Until 23rd February 2015
EAST MEETS WEST T he Tsukanov Family Foundation and Saatchi Gallery are holding an exhibition illustrating Post Pop: East Meets West, examining why Pop Art, of all the twentieth century’s movements has had such a powerful influence over artists from world regions that had or still have very different and sometimes opposing ideologies. The exhibition brings together 250 works by 110 renowned artists from China, the Former Soviet Union, Taiwan, the UK and USA in the largest survey to date exploring Pop Art’s enduring legacy. Post Pop: East Meets West will celebrate the art being produced in these distinct regions since the heyday of Pop, and will present them in relation to each other through the framework of six themes: Habitat; Advertising and Consumerism; Celebrity and Mass Media; Art History; Religion and Ideology; Sex and the Body. Widely regarded as the most significant art movement of the last century, Pop Art exploits identifiable imagery from mass media and everyday life to reflect on the nature of the world we live in. This exhibition examines the relationship between western Pop Art and its lesser-known eastern counterparts including “Sots Art” in the Soviet Union and “Political-Pop” or “Cynical Realism”, which has flourished in Greater China since the turn of the twenty-first century. Although from fundamentally different cultures and ideological backgrounds, the artists in this exhibition play with imagery from commercial advertising, propaganda posters, pictures of the famous as well as monetary and patriotic motifs in wry and provocative works that unmistakably reference the Pop Art movement which emerged in America and Britain in the 1950s and 1960s. In the Soviet Union region these works draw attention to

state control, conformity, ceremony, pomp and the façade of unanimity amongst the people; in America and the UK they serve as a critique of commodity fetishism, the cult of celebrity and our mass-produced, status-driven man-made world; and in Greater China as commentary on the social dislocation created by a new super power’s fascination with wealth and luxury following a period of extreme austerity. Post Pop: East Meets West is co-curated by pre-eminent authorities Andrey Erofeev, a leading art critic and writer, and former head of the contemporary art department of the Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow; Marco Livingstone, an independent curator who has worked on numerous publications, retrospectives and Pop Art exhibitions that have toured throughout Europe, Japan and Canada; and Tsong-Zung Chang, a curator and guest professor of China Art Academy who co-founded the Asia Art Archive and the well established Hanart TZ Gallery in Hong Kong. Given the global energy being enjoyed by contemporary art, this exhibition aims to make audiences more aware of Pop Art as a major influence on current art practice.
ABOUT THE SAATCHI GALLERY The Saatchi Gallery was founded in 1985 to provide a platform to bring contemporary art to as wide an audience as possible and make it accessible. Over the last five years the Saatchi Gallery has hosted 15 out of the 20 most visited exhibitions in London, according to The Art Newspaper’s survey of international museum attendance, and is also ranked amongst the world’s top five most liked museums on Facebook and Twitter by Museum Analytics. CHALET
CHIC AT THE WINTER DECORATIVE ANTIQUES & TEXTILES FAIR 2015
V
isitors will be welcomed with an Alpineinspired retreat in the Foyer to celebrate all that’s best about interiors for winter hideaways. Many designers use the Decorative Fair to source unusual pieces for their client’s ski chalets and hunting lodges. Discover antler and Black Forest furniture, beautifully upholstered seating, French and Swedish painted antiques, decorative period rugs and hunting trophies. Combined with snow scene paintings from our art dealers, ski posters and quirkier pieces such as antique skis revitalised as floor lamps, we’ll create a truly cosy and typically Decorative Fair approach to winter style. All items will be drawn from exhibitors at the Fair and will be for sale. Currently popular at the Decorative Fair is folk art and country accessories – Oprah th Winfrey made time in her busy schedule to visit the recent Autumn Fair (held from 30 Sept-5 Oct 2014) with her US decorator Rose Tarlow and included such pieces in her acquisitions. Whilst collectors may come to buy fine furniture, objects and art such as paintings by leading Modern British artists like Keith Vaughan at prices up to (and in excess of) £50,000, new younger customers are also delighted to find affordable ‘entry level’ purchases such as £15 vintage French wine glasses. 145 dealers (many of whom participate at every Fair) come from across the UK and Europe to exhibit a wealth of wonderful period design. Antiques and works of art dating from the 1600s to 1914 abound. Art Deco and later C20th design makes up around one quarter of objects, art and furniture for sale. Unlike any other antiques event, their dealers style their stands as roomsets so visitors can imagine how items might work in their own homes. The Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair is the most stylish and beautiful antiques and period design event in the UK. It is the only antiques Fair to cater specifically to the interior decorating trade and in 2015 it will celebrate 30 years of business.

OLD IS HOT
THE BRIGHT OLD THINGS TAKE OVER SELFRIDGES In 2015, Selfridges champions older designers and artists in a twist on its famous Bright Young Thing initiative. Selfridges’ tradition of beginning the year with unexpected, thought-provoking concepts continues from this month.
I
n a twist on its annual Bright Young Things scheme, which includes alumni such as fashion talents Simone Rocha and Astrid Andersen, set designers Rhea Thierstein and Anna Lomax, and ‘haute coiffure’ designer Charlie le Mindu, Selfridges helps readjust the lens with which we view exciting new creative talent – removing age restrictions and, this time round, celebrating Bright Old Things. With the ages of the participating artists, designers, musicians and entrepreneurs ranging from late-forties to mid-eighties, Selfridges acknowledges that ‘old’ is as subjective as it is irrelevant. Hand-picked talents, some who will be instantly recognisable, and some entirely new names, have been chosen to take part on the basis that they have undergone a ‘retirement renaissance’, a complete career change or an inspiring step into the unknown. The compelling line-up includes an ex-chartered accountant who became an artist in his sixties, an architectturned-topiarist, and a product designer who has become a YouTube sensation with his vlog ‘Earth News For Space.’ Each participant will be given a dedicated Oxford Street window with which to give the million people who pass by them every week an intimate insight into their creative visions. Special events spotlighting their work will take place throughout the scheme, including a soon-to-be-announced special programme for London Collections: Men, whilst products from selected Bright Old Things will be sold in-store and online. Linda Hewson, Selfridges Creative Director, comments: “One of the things we pride ourselves on is telling great

stories. How better to start the year than by celebrating fourteen of them? As a centenary-old department store which has been successfully reinventing itself over and over again, it made so much sense for us to shine a light on the wealth of talent and experience harnessed by bright older creatives. These people can definitely teach us all a thing or two about growing old whilst staying young at heart and relevant”. Offering deeper insight still into the lives and legacies of the Bright Old Things, Selfridges has invited Todd Selby to capture each of these fascinating subjects in their homes and creative spaces. From retailer-turned-designer Nick Wooster, one of the world’s most photographed men in his fifties, to Molly Parkin – one time Fashion Editor at The Sunday Times and now a talented painter at 82 – by way of Bruno Wizard, 64, “the most famous punk you’ve never heard of”… Bright Old Things is a joyful reminder that it’s never too late to try something new. THE BRIGHT OLD THINGS 2015 ARE Bruno Wizard, Den Woods, Michael Lisle-Taylor, Robert Roope, Roger Miles, Sue Kreitzman, Tim Bushe, Nick Wooster, Tony Gibson, Andrew Ekins, Sand Laurenson, Molly Parkin, William Forbes-Hamilton and Sally Peplow. haracter Cocktails introduces a touch of theatre to the already dramatic surroundings of the Beaufort Bar at The Savoy. Four new cocktail creations pay tribute to four of the most famous personalities to have resided at The Savoy; Ernest Hemingway, Coco Chanel, Charlie Chaplin and Frank Sinatra. Each cocktail has been created in a collaborative effort by the award-winning team of mixologists at the Beaufort Bar. Adding an element of surprise and intrigue to the service, the cocktails are served in era-specific vintage glassware and garnished tableside, in front of the guest to reflect the inspiration behind the drink. THE NEVER ENDING STORY, ERNEST HEMINGWAY Created by Lorenzo Antinori and inspired by Hemingway’s time in Cuba and his love of Daiquiri’s. In short, a drink he would approve of. A Cuban inspired mix of Bacardi 1909, Dark Crème de Cacao, lime juice, caster sugar and two dashes of Absinthe. Served in a 1930’s coupette and presented with a hand wrapped cinnamon cigar. COCO, COCO CHANEL Created by Chris Moore and Fabrizio Fiorito. Coco changed the course of fashion history and she also loved to drink. She was known for believing that red wine and caviar would keep her young. Champagne was also a favourite tipple. Grey Goose infused with rose and jasmine, Lillet Blanc, Red Wine and Blackberry Reduction, Moët & Chandon 2004. Served in an 1890’s wine glass and garnished with jasmine and rose tea spray and black sugar pearls presented in a small caviar tin. THE GOLD RUSH, CHARLIE CHAPLIN Created by Aaron Jones and Lorenzo Antinori. Chaplin was not a big drinker but this cocktail is homage to the

Popcorn-infused Woodford Reserve, Amaretto Disaronno, Vintage Van der Hum, lemon juice, pineapple juice, smoked maple syrup, egg white. The Beaufort Bar provides a theatrical, art deco setting in which to enjoy Champagne, cocktails and cabaret. The jet-black and burnished gold décor exudes the glamour of a time when such luminaries as Carol Gibbons, The Savoy Orpheans and George Gershwin graced the cabaret stage at The Savoy. Today, from a bar that stands on this very same stage, award-winning head bartender Chris Moore and his expert team offer classic and new cocktails made with an element of drama, and one of the most extensive choices of Champagne by the glass and by the bottle, including rare vintages from Louis Roederer and Cristal. The tradition of live entertainment continues to this day in the Beaufort Bar with nightly performances by both renowned and up and coming talent, and a scintillating Cabaret & Burlesque night hosted by Holly Penfield and Dusty Limits on the first Sunday of every month.

he Suhail Collection is the first Collection to be offered on Phantom, Ghost and Wraith models, taking inspiration from Suhail, one of the brightest star constellations in the sky , and believed to have inspired the 10th Century Arabic mathematician, astronomer and physicist Ibn alHaitham. British-Iraqi physicist, Jim Al-Khalili, considers al-Haitham to be the “first true scientist” based on his pioneering work on the scientific method, including that light enters the eye rather than leaving it. His Book of Optics was translated into Latin in the 13th century and has influenced a number of key Western scientific thinkers including Roger Bacon, Leonardo Da Vinci, Galileo Galilei and René Descartes. “Ibn al-Haitham was a notable pioneer whose
The interior continues the striking colour scheme by elegantly combining Crem é Light leather with Turchese accents, framed by a Navy Blue instrument panel top and carpets. Suhail star emblems are also worked into the marquetry on the Ash Burr wood fascia, whilst a Starlight Headliner in the Phantom and Wraith models allows the owner their own personal moment of stargazing. Finally the Bespoke clock, colour matched to the interior, depicts the Suhail Ursa Minor and Major constellation on the clock face. We felt the Suhail constellation was the perfect inspiration for a very special Bespoke collection to celebrate his influence on Eastern and Western science,” said Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. A host of elegantly executed touches have been added to the Rolls-Royce Phantom, Phantom Coupé, Ghost and Wraith to bring the spirit of Suhail to life in this extraordinary collection. The exterior of these astronomy-inspired motor cars sparkle in a unique moonstone pearl colour evoking the colour of the stars at night, whilst a Suhail star emblem completes a Turchese Blue coachline inspired by the colour of the night sky when Suhail is visible.

Bespoke Design Studios at the Home of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood, England. Majestic Horse Ghost was designed to celebrate the Chinese Year of the Horse. Marrying the Chinese artistic tradition and appreciation of fine hand-craftsmanship, Majestic Horse offered unique interior and exterior features including stitched horses in the headrests and rear seat cushions as well as a painted horse logo on the side and one painted on the wooden dashboard. Pinnacle Travel Phantom, this extraordinary motor car served to showcase the imaginative heights of craftsmanship and design that emanates from Goodwood, seen through the prism of modern luxury travel, offering a luxuriant colour palette, opulent, sumptuous materials and complex, beautifully hand-crafted marquetry.
Phantom Drophead Coupé Waterspeed Collection was designed to celebrate Sir Malcolm Campbell’s new world water-speed record in 1937. Echoing the cutting-edge technology employed in the construction of Sir Malcolm Campbell’s Bluebird K3 craft, only the finest contemporary materials were used. Brushed steel perfectly complemented an exclusively developed ‘Maggiore’ Blue colour scheme whilst hand-crafted Abachi wood inlays evoked the sense of a boat effortlessly gliding through water at pace, whilst exterior coachline and laser etchings inside the car brought Campbell’s ‘Bluebird’ motif back to life. Phantom Metropolitan Collection paid homage to the world’s great metropolises through the most complex application of marquetry ever undertaken by Rolls-Royce. When open, Phantom’s signature picnic tables presented occupants with an elevated view of the city, created through the expert application of 500 individual wood veneer pieces. Indeed, the process of hand-cutting, colouring, shaping and applying is so complex these unique objects d’art take an expert wood craftsperson several days to complete. The cityscape theme extended to a specially developed Aetherius Grey leather colour created to echo the colour palette of the modern city whilst 6,800 two-tone stitches to the central rear seat flutes depicted an abstract image of a skyscraper. For the first time in the marque’s history, a rotating bezel expressing 24 of the great cities of the world and their time zones adorned the central console of a Rolls-Royce motor car. Maharaja Phantom Drophead Coupé was unveiled in November. Inspired by the Golden Age of the Raja, this beautiful model was conceptualised and hand¬crafted in honour of India’s affinity with the super¬luxury marque.100 years ago, India’s Princes and Maharajas collectively engaged in what is described as one of the world’s longest relationships with one automobile manufacturer. Over a period of five decades, the Maharajas purchased over 840 unique Rolls¬Royce motor cars pushing the maker of the ‘Best Car in the World’ to unprecedented levels of design, engineering and luxury. Rolls¬Royce Motor Cars is recreating that golden age of India’s motoring heritage though a collection of Bespoke vehicles inspired by the Maharajas’ cars. These limited Collections serve to inspire customers, with record levels of Bespoke demand. Nearly every Phantom across the globe, 90% of Wraith and 80% of Ghost family motor cars were commissioned by customers with some element of Bespoke design. Bespoke is Rolls-Royce.

LONDON ROLLS OUT
THE HOLLYWOOD RED CARPET...
W
ith their budget of around £25m and a wish list that includes a prime central London location, enough space for six kids and, for the vineyardowning parents, a private wine cellar, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have set their sights on a penthouse in Marylebone. Ten years ago, that would have been unlikely, Marylebone was a cut-through area with only prestigious Waitrose on offer. But things have gone mad in the past year or two, helped massively by what Galliard Homes call “the Firehouse effect” – referring to Andre Balazs’ Chiltern Firehouse, the hotel/ restaurant that sees celebrities falling over each other to be snapped entering or indeed leaving..the worse for wear. Now that properties can achieve £3,500 per square foot in Marylebone, the area is starting to reach Belgravia and Knightsbridge levels. Rents have also risen by 10 per cent since the Firehouse opened last February, according to Knight Frank, who say Marylebone is no longer simply prime but “super prime” due to the number of £10m-plus sales it has seen this year. Another reason for the rich and famous flocking to the area
360 degree views that take in every London icon from its triple aspect double-height reception room, four bedrooms, two winter gardens and two private rooftop terraces. Residents can also make use of a 24 hour concierge service – useful when jetting home from a shoot the other side of the world. 2 For classic Grade II-listed white stucco elegance and a prime establishment address, there’s 74 Chester Square, on sale for £23.995m (knightfrank.co.uk). The six bedroom, 6,291 sq ft house in a renowned Belgravia square has been newly refurbished and overlooks the residents’ private gardens. At the end of the street is village-like Elizabeth Street’s high-end boutiques and restaurants. 3 43 Reeves Mews, two Edwardian mews houses knocked into one is now “Mayfair’s most outstanding ultra-prime residence”, says Peter Wetherell of Wetherell estate agency, who is marketing the house for £24m. Hollywood stars Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie seek a luxury family property in London is Galliard Homes’ The Chilterns, the first entirely new-build development in Marylebone in five years. There’s another £1 billion of residential development in the pipeline locally too, but it seems the Hollywood couple may not be looking further than The Chilterns’ £25m duplex penthouse, which comes with a designer £100,000 wine cellar and tasting room stocked with £100,000 worth of wine. According to Galliard’s chairman Stephen Conway, the Hollywood power couple would also join “overseas royals, business tycoons and international artists” if they buy in The Chilterns. So with that £20m or so, where else could Brad and Angelina choose to buy? 1 I f Brad is set on being in the thick of London buzziness he might like the £19.75m penthouse at Neo Bankside. WHAT’S THE STOREY?
I
The Work of a Buildings Historian
came to researching historic buildings by accident. All I knew was that I wanted to work with old buildings and play a part in their conservation. I had always loved history; I had always been interested in old buildings and always enjoyed the process of research. But it was only when I studied for a post-graduate in building conservation at the Architectural Association that I realised that there could be a career incorporating all these elements. I started at the deep end, researching buildings for a firm of conservation architects. I was and am ostensibly an historian but my post-graduate in building conservation gave me that depth of knowledge required by architectural professionals. Today my clients include architects, property developers, planning consultants as well as private home owners. The latter call on my services for many reasons; mostly just to find out the story of their house, but at other times it is to support a planning application or help settle a boundary dispute. A house historian will look at dates, people and any stories surrounding the house and occupants. But in my work, I also look at what was on the site before construction, who built it, how was it constructed, for whom and why? What was the building used for, what alterations had been made in the decades / centuries since construction? I scrutinise architects’ plans, identify alterations and piece together how the building has evolved. This kind of research aids the restoration, conservation and building process. For instance it can determine the historical importance and relevance of architectural features and whether they can or cannot be altered or removed. Particularly if a building is listed, an in depth knowledge of the building’s fabric is crucial. When I research the history of a house I begin by inspecting the premises and getting a feel for the structure. I will then source information at local libraries and archives e.g. maps, parish records, manorial records, electoral rolls, census returns and archived photographs of the building site or area. Depending on the building, a visit to the National Archives at Kew may be needed. In the case of an in depth architectural search, I always visit the Royal Institute of British Architects Library as well. From these sources, and many others I call on, I can build and write a history of the building for the architects or owners. I often liken it to doing a jigsaw puzzle (but without a picture on the box lid). Each piece is important, but it is only when you put them all together that the full historical picture of the house is finally revealed.
4 2 J A N U A RY 2 0 1 4
One example of my work involved a house in St John’s Wood that had been lived in by a famous artist in the 19th century. It was assumed he had designed it himself and had had the entire building built in 1888. However, my research involving visual inspection and later documentary searches revealed the grand late Victorian house was built around a more humble but equally fascinating structure dating to 1825. The conservation / architectural result was that the intended extension had to be modified, but in the end the owner achieved what he wanted without disturbing the earlier fabric of the building. In addition to researching buildings for planning purposes I also research homes for the owner’s sheer curiosity! I am often called in by people who have lived in and loved their home for decades and despite years of occasional delving hadn’t uncovered the full story of the house. An example of this was a house I investigated on the river in Mortlake, which is reputed to be the oldest surviving building in the area. The listing description had it recorded as 18th century, which would have been impressive enough. However, my research into its structural past revealed its origins stretched back to the early 1500s. It was a house where politicians, poets, writers and tobacco brokers had lived. It was also a building that had undergone great change with whole wings being torn down and new ones constructed. All this was found in the course of my research in amongst drawings, photographs, leases and maps; giving the owners an holistic explanation of the home they’d lived in for nearly 30 years! The work of a buildings historian is fascinating and very fulfilling. That’s not to say there aren’t humdrum days going through local tax records or frustration when some houses are reluctant to give up their secrets. But every house is different and it is the anticipation at the beginning of an assignment as well as the peaks of discovery and the satisfaction of the completed research at the end that is so compelling! Ellen Leslie MA GradDipCons(AA) is an historian who researches buildings for conservation and property professionals as well as private home owners (www.ellenleslie.com). She studied at the Architectural Association’s School of Architecture and attained the Post-Graduate Diploma in the Conservation of Historic Buildings. She went on to gain an MA in Historical Research from Birkbeck College. She is a member of the Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain and a Guardian of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings.

HOW MUCH OF LONDON IS OWNED BY QATAR’S ROYAL FAMILY?
S
heikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned, one of the three wives of Qatar’s former emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, acquired 1, 2 and 3 Cornwall Terrace in Regent Park last year for £120m, with plans to combine them to build a huge mansion. When one of the richest royal families of the world decides to build a gigantic luxurious mansion in the most expensive city of the world you can imagine the costs we are talking about. The expenses will be staggering but it seems the royals have the golden touch. Top architects, lawyers and designers will oversee the transformation of the Grade I listed properties into a 33,000 square feet luxurious mansion. One can only imagine the interiors of this as it will house 13 bedrooms, a spa, a heated swimming pool, beauty salon, a gymnasium, massage areas, children’s floor, games rooms, wine cellar, fumoir and staff wing. Heated kitchen seats will keep its inhabitants warm in winter and during summer the Italianate gardens can be done up to resemble a ballroom. Guests will be given a choice of bedrooms and can enjoy a smoke in the cigar room and drink the choiciest wines from the ‘wine cave’. But that sum pales into insignificance besides the value of the Qatari royal family’s other holdings in London. In a spending spree that started in 2008, the ruling Al Thani family and its assorted investment vehicles, including the Qatar Investment Fund, have acquired a 20% slice of Camden market; department store Harrods; 95% of the Shard, at 87 storeys the EU’s tallest building; the Olympic

village; half of the world’s most expensive apartment block at One Hyde Park; the Chelsea Barracks site, and the US embassy building in Grosvenor Square. Along the way, Qatar has also acquired just over a quarter of Sainsbury’s, some 8% of the London Stock Exchange, and nearly 7% of Barclays. As the former Qatari prime minister, Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani (not to be confused with the current eighth emir 34-yearold Sherborne, Harrow and Sandhurst-educated Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, whose London home the neoclassical Cornwall Terrace mansion will be) observed to the Financial Times in a rare 2010 interview, “We are investing everywhere. Even your Harrod’s – we took it.” The family have ruled Qatar, a former British protectorate no larger than Yorkshire, for more than 150 years. Thanks largely to oil and gas (Qatar’s natural gas reserves of some 34 trillion cubic metres are the third largest in the world, and it still has 25bn barrels of oil), the tiny Gulf state of 2.2m people has become arguably the richest country in the world, topping the world rankings of GDP per capita. While standards of living are in general exceptionally high, Qatar is not yet paradise on earth: ask the homosexual community there who risk the death penalty, and foreign workers, who have been grossly abused. Nor have even the wealthiest Qataris had things entirely their own way in London…Last month, the Qatari Investment Authority was rebuffed in a £2.2bn joint bid with a US property company to buy Songbird, the company that controls Canary Wharf, despite being its largest single shareholder. But the Qataris remained, by some distance, the largest foreign sovereign wealth buyers of real estate in London last year, and most analysts expect that to mark merely a temporary pause in their onward march.

IGNITE THEIR IMAGINATIONS
WITH A PLAYHOUSE A playhouse is every child’s dream. A place to call their own, where they can let their imaginations run wild away from the grown-ups! This is what Erica and David Llewellyn wanted for their three year old daughter Phoebe.
hung underneath the steps to add another point of interest to the playhouse. “The team back at The Playhouse Company headquarters were also extremely helpful, offering advice on the many different colours and finishes we could choose from. We have an old copper beech tree, as well as an abundance of purple flowering plants so we wanted the colour of the playhouse to compliment these. The colour we finally chose, purple with cream doors and window frames and white guttering, is the perfect partner for our garden, but is also colourful enough for Phoebe,” adds Erica. Phoebe’s “Bay Tree Cottage” took around two weeks to hand-build at The Playhouse Company’s factory in Herefordshire. It then took just over one day to install into the Llewellyn’s back garden. “It was raining heavily on the day of the installation but that did not deter Richard and his team. The playhouse went up in little over day and as soon as the rain stopped

“W
e had always wanted a playhouse for Phoebe, so as soon as we thought she was old enough to enjoy and appreciate one we started the search,” explains Erica. “We found The Playhouse Company on the Internet and after looking through its range of beautiful houses we settled on a design. Once we had chosen the house we then had to decide where to put it and as our garden is quite uneven it was difficult to find the perfect place. However, we needn’t have worried. Richard Frost, CEO of The Playhouse Company, came to visit us to assess our garden and the suitability of various sites.” By visiting Erica’s garden Richard was not only able to advise on where best to place their chosen playhouse but he was also able to make a few suggestions, which eventually turned their standard playhouse into one with the “wow” factor! Erica continues, “Our only stipulation was that we wanted the playhouse to have two floors, with an external staircase that went to the upper floor. After walking around our garden and inspecting various locations, Richard suggested building the playhouse around an existing old tree and incorporating the tree into the design of the playhouse – it was a fantastic idea!” The final design was a two story “cottage” style playhouse with a front “stable” door, two downstairs windows and two beautifully crafted dormer windows on the second floor. The exterior staircase wound its way around the tree to the upper floor and led to another “stable” door at the side of the house. A swing was also

Phoebe had explored her new house and moved in quite a few of her toys! She takes great pride in her “tree house” as she calls it! “We absolutely love our new playhouse. Not only is it somewhere to inspire Phoebe and encourage her to use her imagination, but it also blends beautifully into our garden without being intrusive,” concludes Erica. Richard Frost, CEO of The Playhouse Company, adds, “A playhouse is the perfect present which will last for years rather than days. They entice children away from the television and help to ignite their imaginations in a way that computer games and TV programmes just cannot.”

The best First Class airline seats in the world revealed
F
irst class travel is all about the comfort and well-being of the passenger, its all about their personal space, gourmet food, electronic gadgets, personal butler service, luxurious and soft linen et all.
F irst place went to Singapore Suites, followed by Cathay Pacific, Emirates and Etihad British Airways first class came 22nd overall, scoring highly in the food and drink categories
Luxury travel is scaling new heights after a lull that it faced a few years ago. From newly designed seats, to extravagant apartments in the sky the airlines are all out to attract the crème de la crème to fly with them. First class seats were once considered to be white elephants and were believed to be on their way out, but aviation data analysis companies show a 34% increase in first class travel in the year 2014 as compared to 2009. Today, worldwide there are about 86 million first class seats on all flights. Inspired by Eithad’s launch of a new First Class luxury suite named ‘The Residence’, crowd sourcing travel website Flightfox has devised a comprehensive list of the 24 best First Class in-flight cabins from around the world. To produce the list, they took into account everything from seat configuration, aisle access and suite privacy to the type of champagne served, whether pyjamas were provided and how caviar was plated. And it also shows the best rate flyers can expect to pay when booking a seat in luxury. Singapore Airlines was crowned king of the skies while second place went to Hong Kong airline Cathay Pacific and Emirates bagged bronze. When Eithad’s The Residence launched in December it raised the bar even higher, offering guests a three room fully staffed suite, a chauffeur to a private check-in and lounge, an onboard butler, fine Italian Poltrona Frau leather sofa, two dining tables and - better yet - an in-flight personal chef to 5 8 J A N U A RY 2 0 1 4
whip up whatever takes your fancy. But, for now, you could do a lot worse than booking a first class trip with any airline featured in Flightfox’s survey, you’ll just need deep pockets. The cheapest price for a one-way ticket with survey toppers Singapore Airlines in their Singapore suite will set you back £2,053 for a flight from Singapore to Mumbai. For that, you’ll be served 2004 Dom Pérignon, provided with pyjamas to sleep in and sit on an spacious armchair handstitched by Italian craftsmen - their most leg room friendly design to date. When it came to overall ‘rockstar’ status - one of the categories judged - Singapore suites came out as the overall winner too and offer a double bed option. Comparatively, Hong Kong airline Cathay Pacific’s cheapest one way first class ticket - who came second costs just £440, but you’ll need to fly from Hong Kong to Taiwan to bag it. Choose them and, according to Flightfox, you’ll enjoy five star food and drink service. Cathay Pacific serve Krug Grand Cuvée champagne, an la carte menu and freshly steamed rice, toast and eggs cooked to your personal specifications. The most expensive best-priced first class flight, according to the survey, is flying between Tokyo and LA with Japanese airline ANA, and will set you back at least £5,835. Emirates, known for deluxe treatment, came third and slings it all on. You’ll get pyjamas, use of a limousine, an in-flight shower to freshen up, an onboard bar, caviar and Dom Pérignon champagne for flying first. When it comes to value-for-first-class-ticket-price Emirates scored fourth overall, with their cheapest flight taking you from Auckland to Brisbane for £509. Fourth and fifth place went to Etihad and Lufthansa respectively. Etihad’s cheapest ticket costs £563 (United Arab Emirates to Mumbai) whereas Lufthansa’s best deal is £3,409 for a first class ticket from South Africa to Germany. Though pricey, Lufthansa climbed higher in the ratings thanks to five star scores for seat configuration, size (a two-metre-long flat-bed) and food and wine. They serve Krug Gande Cuvée champagne, canapes, caviar and food designed by Michelin-starred chefs.

FASHION
CHANGES AFOOT ON SAVILE ROW Behind the glossy black doors and elegant railings of Savile Row, tradition and heritage might be woven into the fabric of Savile Row suiting, but some select houses are re-working the template. Change and innovation has arrived on Savile Row, with institutions such as Hardy Amies and E.Tautz ushering the storied street into the 21st century.
S
ince a re-launch with the backing of private investment company Fung Capital in 2012, Hardy Amies has returned to Savile Row at No. 8, just a short stroll from No.14, the original Hardy Amies home where he would create pieces for the likes of Cary Grant and Queen Elizabeth II. Under Design Director Mehmet Ali, the brand has combined the house’s sense of quiet, dignified refinement with youthful nous; rich prints, contemporary silhouettes and a fine line in covetable accessories. In store, you’ll also find a range of “curated goods”; accessories and charming curiosities from other British
7 4 J A N U A RY 2 0 1 4
brands that chime with the Hardy Amies ethos. The latest feather in the house’s cap is a Signature Bespoke service; a bridge between having an entirely bespoke suit crafted for you and the ease of ready-to-wear, a contemporary way to cater for a new generation of men who appreciate the finer points of suiting but don’t have the budget or patience to order fully bespoke. The service involves taking the measurements of the client, sifting through myriad stylistic elements (double or single-breasted, lining, lapel, etc) and then the pattern is crafted off-site in China. The work in progress is then returned for adjustments and tweaks,
with each stage of the process employing hand craft. Prices are from £2,200, with a choice of over 2000 fabric options available and a time frame of six weeks to create the suit. Aquascutum has announced the return of its bespoke arm, available at the store’s Great Marlborough Street and Jermyn Street from February, returning to its thoroughly British roots; bringing back made-to-measure suiting is the next step in the process. Like Hardy Amies, the brand will focus on suiting at more affordable price points, outsourcing production beyond London and instead looking abroad, this time to Portugal. Gieves & Hawkes, the tailoring institution boasting the most covetable address in all of tailoring, No.1 Savile Row, is celebrating its new store renovation. The William Kent townhouse, which boasts a full line-up of their military uniforms as well as their Royal family archive pieces, has been sympathetically updated by interior designer Teresa Hastings, with contemporary art, modern lighting and new flooring. Continuing the evolution of one of Churchill’s favourite tailors, historical house E. Tautz recently unveiled their new flagship store. With Patrick Grant at the helm, the house has become one of London Collections: Men’s biggest stories since it was re-
launched in 2009, and this new launch adds another chapter to the story. Spreading beyond Savile Row, the new store is situated on Duke Street housing a handsome, masculine space to showcase the brand’s elegant menswear, alongside a made-to-order cashmere service. The store sees the launch of a bespoke suiting service with a more demographic price point, with suits in British cloths available from £795, alongside a new made-to-measure shirting and hand embroidery service (for the modern chap’s monogramming needs). And in a move that at one time would have been unheard of for an establishment tailor, the label are debuting a denim jeans range; casual but still adhering to the E. Tautz ethos of supporting UK craft – the jeans are sewn in Blackburn at a factory that’s made clothes for the British Army for over a century. Sometimes innovation comes in the most subtle of forms; this is the case at Anderson & Sheppard, the historical tailor that combines bespoke suiting with a “haberdashery” store devoted to particularly handsome ready-to-wear and accessories and now, an online store with international shipping. The difference in this is that the service isn’t a fast fashion operation; each piece is picked and packaged by Audie Charles, Anderson & Sheppard’s renowned style mistress and shipped off from the store’s Clifford Street basement.

APPRENTICE FINALIST BIANCA SHOWS THE SYDENHAM HIGH DIFFERENCE
BIANCA NOW – A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS WOMAN
Sydenham High alumna Bianca Miller may have missed out on the 2014 Apprentice title but that isn’t stopping her putting her proposed business plan into action, showing the resilience and self-reliance that she learnt while a student at the South London school.
T
he 25-year old, who already runs a successful personal branding and training business, narrowly missed out on winning Lord Sugar’s £250,000 investment in the show’s finale in December but is moving ahead with her plan to launch a skintone matching hosiery range. A new website – BiancaMillerLondon.com – is under construction and has already been inundated by potential customers seeking to register for more information about the range. From the start of the Apprentice contest, Bianca showed her ‘SydSpirit’ with a calm and careful game plan. She happily admits she made mistakes along the way but always learnt from them and became stronger as

a result. Learning to fail and using that self-knowledge to eventually succeed is something that is integral to Sydenham High’s approach to educating its students to meet the challenges of the future. Sydenham High Headteacher Kathryn Pullen said: “We’re so proud of Bianca and everything she has achieved. Her name is on our honours board and, despite losing out in the final, she is a winner in the eyes of everyone here at Sydenham High. She is a fantastic role model as she embodies everything we try to teach the girls beyond their academic studies: about teamwork, aspiring with realism, reliability and resilience.” The school is looking forward to welcoming Bianca back so that students and teachers can congratulate her in person.

A New Year, A New You
Healthy New Year’s resolutions
O
K, so you’re an absolute fitness beginner who has little or no idea about the pleasures and pains of healthy, active living. However, if you feel it’s time to improve the state of your mind and body, it might be prudent to adopt some of the following healthy and active New Year’s resolution tips to enjoy a healthier lifestyle... Eat more fruit and vegetable portions every day – This is a simple yet highly effective New Year’s resolution that could really boost your day-to-day health. Try to eat the recommended portions of fruit and vegetables each day to keep your body energized with nutrients, vitamins and minerals. Join a gym or health club – If you really want to fight the flab, joining a gym or health club could be ideal for burning fat and improving your body shape. With a variety of membership types available to suit all your needs, joining a gym has never been easier!
implications including weight gain, depression, chronic sickness... and an empty wallet! Whilst the odd social drink is perfectly acceptable, it might be to time to reassess things if you frequently binge drink. So curb your alcohol intake today and you may just save a few quid in the process. Try an extreme sport – If you’re getting tired of the same old sporting activities, why not try something a little different by signing up for an extreme sport? Whether skydiving, white water rafting or even attempting a desert marathon, extreme sports will make your life feel exciting and adventurous, whilst taking your fitness to another level. Enjoy regular spa therapies – What better way to relax your body after a tough day in the gym than a soothing spa session or massage? Treating your body after exercise is essential if you want to prevent injuries and feel fresh the morning after. So don’t skimp on your down-time... make spa therapy a regular habit this year! Find more time for relaxation – Fitness fanatics are
Are you still struggling for fitness inspiration or looking for some health-conscious New Year’s resolution ideas? Then look no further than this guide which offers some great healthy, active suggestions for 2015. Cut down on your daily salt intake – High salt consumption can lead to a variety of health problems, including raised blood pressure and heart disease. As a result, there really is no need to douse every meal you eat with piles of the white stuff. Do yourself a favour by cutting down on salt today! Try a new sports activity – If you want to boost your fitness levels but feel the gym isn’t right for you, a new sports activity could provide a fun yet fit alternative. With clubs offering everything from zumba classes through to skydiving tutorials, it could be time to get sporty and enjoy a healthier future! Curb your drinking habits – As all those festive hangovers may have hinted, heavy alcohol consumption can entail serious health consequences, with long-term

all the same; they work so hard and exercise so long that sometimes they meet themselves coming back! However, if you really want to live a long and healthy life, make sure you don’t overdo it. Trying to squeeze as much out of each day is one thing but missing your sleep just so you can spend an extra hour at the gym is just plain silly. Resting from exercise is vital if you want to avoid illness so make sure you get some! Whether you’re a complete fitness beginner or seasoned health lover, coming up with a list of active New Year’s resolutions needn’t be so tough. Rather than being a chore, these resolutions should inspire you by opening your mind to new experiences. So this new year, revitalise your mind and body with some lifestyle changes large and small. It could be the dawning of a new you!

TOP 10
DETOX FOODS
Over-indulging on food and alcohol together with late nights over Christmas and New Year, can make you feel bloated, tired, or perhaps you have even put on a pound or two. LEMON Lemons are a staple of many detox diets, and there is good reason for this. Firstly, lemons are packed with antioxidant vitamin C, which is great for the skin and for fighting disease-forming free-radicals. Furthermore, the citrus fruit has an alkaline effect on the body, meaning that it can help restore the body’s pH balance, benefitting the immune system. Try starting your day with hot water and a slice of lemon to help flush out toxins and cleanse your system. GINGER If too much fatty food or alcohol has caused problems for your digestive system, it may be worthwhile adding some ginger to your diet. Ginger is not only great for reducing feelings of nausea, but it can help improve digestion, beat bloating and reduce gas. In addition to this, ginger is high in antioxidants and is good for boosting the
immune system. To give your digestion a helping hand, try sipping on ginger tea or adding some freshly grated ginger to a fruit or vegetable juice. GARLIC Garlic has long been known for its heart benefits, however the pungent food is also good at detoxifying the body. Garlic is not only antiviral, antibacterial and antibiotic, but it contains a chemical called allicin which promotes the production of white blood cells and helps fight against toxins. Garlic is best eaten raw, so add some crushed garlic to a salad dressing to boost its flavour and your health at the same time. ARTICHOKE If you have recently been overindulging in fatty foods and alcohol, adding some steamed globe artichoke leaves to your meals is a great way to help get your body back on track. Globe artichokes are packed with antioxidants and
Here is our guide to eating the right foods and restore your healthy wellbeing... 8 8 J A N U A RY 2 0 1 4
fibre and can also help the body digest fatty foods. On top of this, globe artichoke is renowned for its ability to stimulate and improve the functions of the liver - the body’s main toxin-fighting tool. BEETROOT For those needing a quick health-boosting shot of nutrients, you can’t do much better than beetroot. Packed with magnesium, iron, and vitamin C, the vegetable has recently been hailed as a superfood due to its many reported health benefits. Not only is beetroot great for skin, hair and cholesterol levels, but it can also help support liver detoxification, making it an ultimate detox food. To enjoy its benefits, try adding raw beetroot to salads or sipping on some beetroot juice. GREEN TEA While it’s not technically a food, no detox plan would be complete without regular consumption of essential liquids. Fluids are essential for keeping our organs healthy and helping to flush toxins from the body, and drinking green tea is a great way of boosting your intake. Green tea is not only a good weight-loss drink, but it is extremely high in antioxidants. Research has also suggested that drinking green tea can protect the liver from diseases including fatty liver disease. CABBAGE Many celebs have resorted to the cabbage soup diet to help lose weight and get in shape quickly before a big event, however cabbage is not only good for weight loss - it is also an excellent detoxifying food. Like most cruciferous vegetables (including broccoli and sprouts), cabbage contains a chemical called sulforaphane, which helps the body fight against toxins. Cabbage also supplies the body with glutathione; an antioxidant that helps improve the detoxifying function of the liver. FRESH FRUIT Fresh fruits are high in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fibre= and are also low in calories, making them an important part of a detox diet. If you’re after brighter eyes and skin, shinier hair and improved digestion, try boosting your intake of fruit and eating from a wide variety of different kinds. The good news is fruit is easy to add to your diet, so try starting your day with a fresh fruit salad or smoothie and snacking on pieces of fruit throughout the day. BROWN RICE If you want to cleanse your system and boost your health, it is a good idea to cut down on processed foods. Instead, try supplementing your diet with healthier whole grains such as brown rice, which is rich in many key detoxifying nutrients including B vitamins, magnesium, manganese and phosphorous. Brown rice is also high in fibre, which is good for cleansing the colon, and rich in selenium, which can help to protect the liver as well as improving the complexion. WATERCRESS Like most green herbs and vegetables, watercress is an excellent health-booster and detox food. Firstly, watercress leaves are packed with many vital detoxifying nutrients, including several B vitamins, zinc, potassium, vitamin E and vitamin C. Secondly, watercress has natural diuretic properties, which can help to flush toxins out the body. To reap the benefits of this nutritious food, try adding a handful of watercress to salads, soups and sandwiches.

HEALTH, FITNESS & BEAUTY
FINALLY... SKIN PEELS WHICH WORK Skin peels have been popular to revitalise the skin on your face and improve the look, reducing acne scarring, dark patches and large visible pores. However, there are skin peels and SKIN PEELS!
T
he difference is that a trained beautician cannot use skin peels at medical level – simply because they don’t have the medical qualification to do so. It’s not unusual for patients to tell us that they’ve already tried skin peels – and insist that they don’t work. The same patients have had amazing results from the skin peels they’ve had at Riverbanks Clinic (near Harpenden in Bedfordshire).
LET LIANNE TELL YOU HER STORY.... “After living with bad pigmentation mainly on one side of my face for 20 years, I was at my wits end as foundation either looked grey on my face or I looked like I was caked in it. My confidence was at rock bottom as people always thought I had dirty patches on my face. I went along to Riverbanks Clinic to see what could be done. It was recommended I had the a de-pigmentation peel and after all the information was explained I booked an appointment. After the first week and shredding a lot of skin I could see the pigmentation coming off. After the second week the results was amazing! The pigmentation had gone and my face looked fresh, youthful and the fine wrinkles barely there! Four months later I still look youthful, fresh and, above all, the pigmentation has all gone; I haven’t worn foundation since my peel as I haven’t needed to! My confidence is back and people always comment how youthful I look. The staff are wonderful, welcoming and caring and the treatment I had has made me so happy.”
Lianne’s problem was something known as hyperpigmentation. Darker patches of skin can be the result of sun damage, hormonal imbalances, age spots or birthmarks. They’re bad enough when they appear on your body, but when they’re on your face it can have a serious impact on your lifestyle. There are several options and each patient has a consultation to explore these and get expert medical advice on the right skin peel for their particular condition. HOW A DEPIGMENTING SKIN PEEL WORKS The first step is to have a professional, medical, lightening facemask applied. This will stay on for several hours so it’s best done early in the day by the medical aesthetician. You go home with this on and wash it off at the time your aesthetician has advised. The following day you’ll return to the clinic for assessment
9 0 J A N U A RY 2 0 1 4
and advice on how to look after your skin over the next few days and during the maintenance period. Over the next few days you’ll shed the dead surface skin and will probably have a slightly red skin as your skin peels. The results can be visible as early as a week after treatment, but often take longer – up to a month. The peel acts on the cells that create the darker patches in your skin and reduce the melanin, which is what causes the dark areas. It is extremely effective for both light and dark skins – where many salon treatments don’t work at all for darker skin colours. The statistics say it all; 99% of cases involving abnormal surface level hyper pigmentation report success and it’s also worked in 95% of patients for blemish reduction! SKIN PEELS BANISH BLEMISHES Acne can leave ugly blemishes and scars, in fact, any rash can leave marks behind long after the condition has gone. With young people it’s often thought that acne is simply part of growing up and is left untreated. The resulting scars are not only on the skin, but affect confidence and lifestyle long-term. The right skin peel can make a significant difference in treating mild to moderate acne – although we often recommend a combination of therapies to improve results. These might include skin peels, extractions, LED phototherapy, hydration and sometimes lasers, collagen induction therapy or medication. Every patient is unique and the treatment is tailored to their situation as a result of a comprehensive consultation. The sooner we stop the progress of active acne the better, so if you are currently suffering from this you’ll find our approach is to kill the cause with the right combination of medication and treatment. SKIN PEELS REVIVE YOUR SKIN Some people don’t suffer from any of the problems we’ve explored – but their skin has become dull, less elastic or the pores have enlarged and become visible. A skin peel is an excellent way to give your skin a new lease of life! There are peels that are designed to give your skin a boost, restore elasticity, close pores and leave you with a translucent, youthful freshness. Isn’t it time you gave your skin a treat? If you’d like to explore skin peels and you’re in Harpenden, Luton, St Albans or the surrounding areas, like Lianne, you’ll find the Riverbanks experience is amazing and the results are simply stunning. SOUND MATTERS IN CENTRAL LONDON T his month sees the opening of Hidden Hearing’s new flagship Central London store on Maddox Street. With recent research showing that there are over 4 million people in the UK with undiagnosed hearing loss, and over half a million of these can be found to be in London, it would seem the new store has arrived during a time of much needed hearing healthcare support. This new state of the art store offers the very latest in hearing aid technology as well as being able to provide the usual premium customer care and attention you can expect from Hidden Hearing. With 803ft2 including 2 fully equipped consulting rooms as well as a dedicated fitting room, the new premises is situated in an easily accessible location just off of London’s prestigious Regents Street. Over 300 hearing solutions are available from the leading hearing aid manufacturers including devices that are invisible when worn. Hannah Leech is the resident audiologist at the Maddox Street store, she told us: “I am thrilled to be working at our new location. I think this store represents exactly what Hidden Hearing is able to offer all customers. We have some really exciting tools such as electronic hearing evaluation, video otoscopes and live speech mapping, all of which allow us to record the most accurate hearing assessments with personalised
9 2 J A N U A RY 2 0 1 4
detail. This means each customer is treated for their individual needs and concerns and the solution offered is one they are most comfortable and happy with too. I would encourage anyone with a hearing concern to come in and see us; the staff here are welcoming and happy to help, even if it’s just for a quick tour of the new facilities on offer” Tools like the video otoscope mean that customers are taken to the next level of a hearing assessment; the video otoscope itself allows the inside of the ear canal to be shown on a screen using a very small camera. This is a useful tool for both the audiologist looking for any common problems such as wax, but also means customers can look and understand what might be happening inside their ear should they wish to take a look too. With so much on offer it’s worth a trip just to take a look around, the staff at the Maddox Street store are happy to receive customers both old and new even if it is just for a tour. You can call in between 9am and 5pm weekdays or alternatively you can call and make an appointment for a free hearing assessment on 02070466066. The official opening takes place on the 28th January with Hidden Hearing’s Medical Advisor Dr Hilary Jones on hand to cut the ceremony ribbon and answer hearing healthcare questions from journalists and customers. HEALTH, FITNESS & BEAUTY BOXERCISE/KICKBOXERCISE Boxercise and kickboxercise are derivatives of boxing and kickboxing and use the drills and techniques of their respective sports in a non-contact setting, usually in the form of a circuit. For example, you might find yourself shadowboxing, skipping, using punch bags or teaming up with a partner to punch or kick focus pads. Both are considered one of the best all-round high intensity exercise classes to get you in great shape. One study found that people felt more calm, more focused and less anxious after a kickboxing class. Taking out all that aggression on a punch bag can be a great stress reliever! CIRCUIT TRAINING Circuit training involves a number of exercises – or ‘stations’ – which are performed one after the other, with a short rest in between. Exercises vary, but tend to include aerobic exercises such as shuttle runs, star jumps and burpees, along with strength moves such as push-ups, squats and lunges. The nature of a circuit training class means that, rather than raising your heart rate and keeping it high for the duration of the class, it gives you more of an ‘interval training’ effect, where you mix intense bursts of activity with recovery periods. It is a very effective way of improving aerobic fitness.
IN A CLASS
OF THEIR OWN
Looking for another way to keep fit? Here is a guide to the ultimate fitness classes - which one is for you?
PILATES Pilates is a form of exercise which works on restoring correct posture and alignment (which are under constant attack from our seated, sedentary lifestyles), strengthening the muscles that stabilise the joints, and working particularly strongly on the abdominals and back. The movement exercises are very precise, focused and controlled, and performed on an exercise mat in a class context. DANCE Dance classes are a lot of fun and very sociable – plus the high concentration factor means you’ll hardly be aware that you are doing a ‘workout’, on not if you are spending half the class trying to figure out which way to spin or how to shimmy. That said, there are so many different types of dance to try that you are sure to get the hang of one of them. Ballet sculpt class won’t teach you to be a ballerina, and salsa aerobics won’t give you the skills to take to the floor like a dance champion, but what they will do, is give you a taste of the benefits of dance and appeal of the ‘real thing’. YOGA Yoga strengthens muscles, improves joint flexibility, and enhances balance, coordination and posture through a series of diverse poses (or ‘asanas’).There are many types of yoga. For example, ashtanga yoga is more energetic than viniyoga. Yoga works on the whole body without favouring one side, and includes forward and backward bending, twists, balances and inversions.Movements are coordinated with the breath. Different types of yoga have very different focuses and approaches – so it’s best to watch a class or speak to the instructor before you take part. ZUMBA Originating from Latin dance styles, Zumba is a cardiovascular and aerobic exercise routine that infuses exercise with dance and choreography. The workout alternates between fastpaced and slow-paced dance moves which are practiced in time to Latin rhythms. Among the dance form’s influences are salsa, hip-hop and rumba. This South American workout tones the body through its use of resistance exercises which effectively amount to interval training due to the varying speeds at which they are carried out.

TOP TIPS FOR EATING OUT
HEALTHILY
H
ealthy eating is more than just the odd piece of fruit or low-fat meal - it’s a lifestyle. It can be difficult to be healthy all the time, especially when everyone else is enjoying themselves. Take a meal out at a restaurant, for instance; do you always go for the healthiest option? Read these tips to help you make healthier choices when you’re wining and dining.
Here are some tips for making healthy choices when eating out: Choose fruit-based starters and desserts; these will contribute to your recommended five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. Choose wholemeal bread rolls over white for the extra fibre, which can improve digestion and may be protective against bowel cancer. Vegetable-based soups are a great option as they are filling and contain less fat than cream-based soups. Likewise, choose tomato-based sauces over creambased ones; containing less fat and calories. Choose fish - white fish is extremely low in fat and is a great source of protein, while oily fish provides omega-3 fatty acids - a ‘good’ type of oil
1 0 2 J A N U A RY 2 0 1 4
which has been shown to help protect against heart disease and may help prevent cancer. Go for grilled or baked foods over fried or roasted. A grilled lean steak can be an excellent choice, providing a rich source of protein and iron. Swap ice-cream for refreshing sorbet. Watch your alcohol intake - while one or two drinks a day may be beneficial to health and could help protect against heart disease and osteoporosis, any more than this can have the opposite effect. Slimmers should also try to stick to one or two courses and watch portion size. Try not to add salt at the table - most foods will already have been seasoned. Too much salt can lead to high blood pressure. Always make sure you have a side order of vegetables or salad - more importantly, make sure you eat them! Finally, if you feel that there is something indulgent on the menu that you simply cannot resist despite your best intentions, don’t be too hard on yourself. Denial in the extreme can lead to binging in the long run. Why not order one portion with two spoons? Half the portion means half the fat, sugar and calories - ‘fancy sharing, anyone’?

FACE UP TO
HEALTH PROBLEMS
W
What your face says about your health
hen it comes to assessing the state of your health, it may be that the answers are written all over your face. Your face provides a wealth of information about the health of your inner organs, while orthodox medicine also relies on facial signals to help diagnose certain conditions. To start reading your body’s signals, check out these seven signs to take note of. HEALTH SIGNAL 1: FOREHEAD ACNE According to Chinese medicine, the forehead is closely linked to the digestive system, while the area between the eyebrows is linked to the liver. Over-indulgence of rich foods and alcohol may cause temporary spots in this area, while frequent breakouts could indicate poor nutritional habits. To help get rid of these spots, try to maintain a healthy diet and stay hydrated. You may also wish to get tested for suspected food intolerances, which can affect both the liver and digestive system. HEALTH SIGNAL 2: CONGESTED CHEEKS While spots on the cheeks may have simple causes such as cosmetics or unclean pillowcases, this area is also thought to be linked to the lungs. Spots in this region can therefore be indicative of respiratory distress, with smokers, asthmatics and allergy sufferers being prone to breakouts or broken capillaries on the cheeks. HEALTH SIGNAL 3: SPOTS ON THE CHIN AND JAW LINE Spots on the chin and jaw line are generally thought to be due to hormonal fluctuations and may appear on women at particular stages of their menstrual cycle. Persistent spots in this area, however, may be a symptom of a hormone imbalance or endocrine disorder such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, so it may be worthwhile getting your hormone levels checked if you are experiencing other symptoms such as missed periods or weight gain. HEALTH SIGNAL 4: DARK CIRCLES AND UNDER-EYE BAGS Dark circles and under-eye bags are mostly hereditary,
1 0 6 J A N U A RY 2 0 1 4
however if you find they make a sudden appearance or get significantly worse, this may point to certain health problems. The under-eye area is thought to be linked to the kidneys, so changes here may suggest dehydration or a build-up of toxins. To counteract this, drink more water and cut down on alcohol, caffeine and salt. Alternatively, circles could be caused by anaemia, due to vitamin B12 or iron deficiencies. HEALTH SIGNAL 5: UNUSUAL TONGUE According to Chinese medicine your tongue is a map to your health, and orthodox medical professionals also use the tongue to identify various conditions. Anaemia (caused by a lack of iron, folate or vitamin B12) is one such condition - with symptoms of the illness including a burning, sore or red tongue. Alternatively, a blue discolouration of the tongue (cyanosis) could indicate a lack of oxygen in the blood stream, while white lesions on the tongue could be a sign of oral thrush. HEALTH SIGNAL 6: EXCESSIVE FACIAL OR BODY HAIR For females suffering from excessive body or facial hair (hirsutism), this can be a frustrating and embarrassing problem. However, it can also be a symptom of an underlying endocrine disorder, which may need to be checked out. One of the most common female endocrine disorders is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) - a condition which frequently results in excessive body hair as well as acne, weight gain and irregular periods. HEALTH SIGNAL 7: MOLES Ending on a high note, moles may often get bad press, however, providing you look after them properly (by applying sunscreen, staying out the sun and checking them regularly), moles may actually be a good sign for your health. A research team from King’s College London found that those with over 100 moles have tougher bones and are less likely to develop osteoporosis, while research has also suggested that those with moles are likely to have healthier eyes and heart.

ith utility bills rising steeply year on year, energy efficient window dressings are the perfect choice to help you make a saving. According to energy regulator Ofgem, the average yearly bill in the UK is £1420 and forecasters from uSwitch.com have predicted that this cost could be as high as £4,185 by 2020. MATERIAL GAIN “It’s very unlikely that you’d throw a bundle of crisp five pound notes out of the window on a regular basis,” says Sarah Quilliam, head of product design at Hillarys, “but that is exactly what you could be doing if your window dressings aren’t energy efficient. “A lot of heat can be lost through windows, especially in older properties with sash or period windows, but you can make a big difference by choosing the right covering. One of the quickest and most affordable ways to insulate your home is to dress your windows with thermal curtains or roman blinds. Simple steps such as choosing a lining with thermal properties for roman blinds and curtains can also make a surprisingly big difference. The extra layer of fabric provides added insulation and gives the window dressing a luxurious padded look. You may be wondering what thermal or interlined actually means? Curtains and roman blinds are generally made up from either two or three layers. A ‘normal’ lined curtain is made up from the face fabric – the one you’ve chosen for its colour or pattern – and a single back lining layer. This can be plain, thermal or blackout. A plain lining will give some protection from heat loss but will primarily help the curtains or roman blind to hang attractively. A thermal lining is a specially coated fabric that will provide increased insulation. Three layer curtains are lined and interlined – this is an extra lining that is sandwiched in between the face fabric and the lining. It’ll make the curtains seem fuller, hang better and of course provide fabulous insulation. All of the fabrics in Hillarys roman blinds collection can be interlined or you could opt for a beautiful made-tomeasure curtain with a thermal lining, so there’s no need to compromise on style over substance. Parts of your home that are going to benefit the most from thermal treatments are generally hallways, rooms with north facing windows, bedrooms and conservatories. Blinds, curtains and shutters are proven to help prevent heat escaping through any windows, resulting in a cosy home and lower bills. SHADES OF GREY
F
ifty Shades Of Grey is a best-seller with its tale of seduction, and just as irresistible is the trend for shades of grey in interiors. Gabrielle Fagan explores the sophisticated power of grey and how it transforms rooms. Grey is so sexy and sophisticated - not the masterful hero of the best-selling novel, but the decor colour. Once an overlooked ‘wallflower’ section on the colour chart, grey has shed it’s cold, institutional image, and is proving it’s power to transform any setting. Flirting with its subtle, versatile tones, from crisp charcoal and French grey to shimmering silver and mysterious smoke-grey could be just the way to turn up the heat at home. “Grey is a surprisingly calming and harmonious colour to live with, but you must choose the right tone,” advises Mark Upstone, head of global visual display at The Conran Shop. “Greys with more brown in the mix will feel warm - white based greys will feel colder. “Be bold. Don’t restrict yourself to a feature wall, grey looks better en masse, and use different finishes of the same tone to create intriguing interest and depth. “Give grey a starring role by using it on walls and paintwork, he suggests, and a matching gloss paint finish for woodwork. If that feels too overpowering, tone it down with pastels, white or a zingy kick of sharp citrus, which will ensure it has less of a masculine edge. FACE THE WALL If you’re committing to a new relationship with this colour, the best place to start is with the walls. To find the one grey you love - experiment! Try colours in different tones by using sample pots, but ensure you see how they
change with the light in your home throughout the day. It also works well to simply paint one wall in your chosen grey and use it as a backdrop to a focus piece of furniture such as a striking sofa or piece of furniture. FURNISHING AFFAIR Texture, shape and symmetry are vital ingredients for successful grey sanctuaries. This season, splashes of colour are an antidote to our winter gloom and almost anything goes with greys. Pinks always sit well, or you could be a little adventurous and choose a vibrant raspberry, deep purple or burnt orange and soft yellows for a lovely contrast. Grey works in modern and older properties, and will look as beautiful in a minimalist setting matched with sleek white shelving as it will with period wood panelling and mahogany furniture.”
SEDUCTIVE SETTING Transform a bedroom palette with greys in decor or silky fabrics to bring an air of relaxation to an uptight setting. Hang drapery panels which puddle on the floor to frame your windows with a layer of textured sheers behind them for the ultimate in privacy. Grey tones in fabrics and wallpapers create a glamorous and striking effect, especially paired with pattern and texture. It’s a chic, streamlined look which also taps into the five-star ‘hotel’ trend which will be very evident in interiors this autumn. If passion for the look is running high, dress a bed appropriately in shades of grey bedlinen. Simple luxury touches are essential such as rugs and lighting.
Grey is full of surprises and won’t fail to seduce any setting, so follow the guide to taking advantage of its charms. 1 1 2 J A N U A RY 2 0 1 4

MAKE AN ENTRANCE! How to create a welcoming hallway
E
ntrance ways tend to be dark and narrow but painting them white isn’t necessarily the best option. “Hallways, especially busy family ones, can take a lot of wear of tear and white be very unforgiving, as well as cold, so a better option, is to choose a light, bright colour in a warm tone. Choose a colour that is a shade or two lighter than the main room the hallway leads to, and it will help create continuity between the two spaces. As this room is primarily a walk-through, you can afford to make a strong design statement and be bold with colour and pattern. Patterned wallpaper with a slight shine will help reflect the light, while vertical stripes can create the illusion of height. If you’re concerned about knocks and scratches, a practical option is to have painted wood panelling on the bottom of
essential. If you have a high ceiling, a large pendant light will act as a beautiful centrepiece and be the first thing that people see when they enter your home. If the ceiling is low, pendant lights will have the effect of making the room feel smaller, so wall lights are the better option. Mirrors are a good way to reflect natural light and give the illusion of more space. A large mirror placed at the end of a hallway instantly provides depth, making a hallway feel larger. STORAGE SOLUTIONS Hallways can easily become cluttered so finding a space for coats, keys and shoes is a must. A wooden bench with storage If you have room, offers storage as well as a useful seating area. The more floor space you can see, the larger

FEATURE FLOORING Flooring in a hallway needs to be durable but choose wisely and you can create impact while being practical too. If you have a particularly long and narrow hallway, a chequerboard effect on the floor will create the impression of width - the wider the tiles, the wider it will look. Hallway runners are a great way to inject colour, while colourful striped carpet will instantly enliven a stairway. If you have bare wooden stairs, consider painting each step a different shade of the same colour or have fun with stencils to create patterns or words. LET THE LIGHT IN Hallways can often be dark, so getting the lighting right is

your hallway will seem and there are lots of great wall-hung cupboards available. MAKE A FEATURE Hallways may be small but that doesn’t mean you can’t create a stunning focal point. A narrow console table with a pair of lamps and mirror above makes a pretty focal point while a vase of fresh flowers or a scented cinnamon candle will create an inviting aroma. A group of family portraits is another great way to add interest and personalise the space. Generally, it’s best to hang fewer, larger pictures as opposed to several smaller ones, as it can make the space seem more confined and cluttered. With a little imagination and the right colours, storage and lighting, you can create an inviting entrance you’ll love coming home to and will want to show off.

DESIGNED FOR LIVING
BUILT FOR LIFE Why choose the Design & Build approach to create your dream home
T
he refurbishment or remodeling of your home can be a complex undertaking. There are many different aspects to the process, all of which require detailed consideration and specialist skill. Traditionally, the approach has been to appoint numerous individual professionals to complete the project. These include architects, interior designers, structural engineers, project managers and building contractors amongst others. This design-tender-build approach demands a high level of involvement from the client as they have to manage all of these individual providers whilst overseeing the project as a whole. This can turn what should be the realisation of a dream into a very stressful experience. In recent years a new approach has been available which offers a much more cohesive and stress free experience. Also referred to as design led construction, design and build is a method of delivering a project where both the design and the build services are contracted to a single company for a fixed price. This keeps the entire process ‘in house’, from initial survey and planning, right through to the completion of the build. Red Square has been pioneering the design and build approach to residential refurbishment for 15 years. They believe that in order to achieve the best possible end result for the client, the project should be built and finished by the team who designed it. Ideal for those without the time or knowledge to project manage, design and build offers a significant number of advantages to the client. Product costs are discussed and reviewed throughout the design process, ensuring there are no surprises once the project is priced for the build phase. At all times the client’s overall budget is being considered. Work can commence on site whilst the detail design is being finalised, enabling early discovery of potential issues with the property (i.e. hidden instability in the existing structure, requirement to level sub floors.) This allows the detail design to be amended to take into account such issues and thereby potentially reduce their cost impact. Removes the cost and time required to tender the construction phase and also avoids the frustration and difficulties in trying to compare submissions from various contractors. The client has certainty over costs as a guaranteed contract price is
1 1 6 J A N U A RY 2 0 1 4
given at commencement of the build phase, inclusive of on-going design support, project management and full project liability. There is a single point of accountability. The same team is responsible for all of the work, which eliminates any problems that traditionally occur once responsibility is divided amongst individual professionals and contractors. When issues arise, the project is not delayed whilst designers and contractors determine who is responsible. A single point of contact simplifies the process, allowing a pro-active relationship to develop between the client and their principal contact, supported by a team with considerable experience of working together. This ensures any issues are overcome in a positive and efficient manner. The process allows for design and product specification changes during the construction phase. This is a huge advantage for longerterm projects where specified products can cease to be available and in areas such as home automation where they are constantly being updated. The team are able to review the market just before orders are placed to ensure the latest products are incorporated. The design team are fully responsible for the overall project, from initial concept design to build completion. This means they have full control over quality of construction and can ensure the build actually completes as it was designed. For these reasons design & build is now considered the best choice for the client. It is a low risk, low stress option that is time efficient, cost effective and ensures quality and continuity of workmanship throughout, resulting in a home you can be proud of for years to come. Red Square offers a complete service including; obtaining planning approvals, interior design & architecture, structural engineering, project management, construction, bespoke joinery, home automation and landscaping.

“TOMORROW’S TECHNOLOGY TODAY”
HOUSE & GARDEN
MAKE A FEATURE OF IT A feature wall is a great way to experiment with colour and bold pattern and is a simple way to make a room look sophisticated, stylish and chic. A feature wall can add interest, style and energy to your room. As a basic rule, choose a wall that’s as plain as possible, without doors or windows. Interior designer Joanna Wood says it’s important you don’t just think of walls, either. “A chimney breast or alcove both make great features,” she says. And, says Joanna, as you’re going to be drawing attention to your chosen wall, think hard about whether it’s worth showing off. “Does it have beautiful architectural elements or will you be highlighting a piece of furniture that you really love,” she says. Placing your bed against a feature wall makes for an unusual and striking bed head, for example. Paint the wall in a bold colour (strong and sexy shades such as plum and sapphire can work well) or for a more sophisticated and glam touch, cover you wall in a material like velvet or silk. For a subtle effect, choose a complementary shade to
that of the rest of the room; a darker or lighter intensity of the same colour as the other three walls can really work well. If you’re into a bit more drama then pick contrasting colours - those that sit opposite each other on the colour wheel (a warm brown with duck egg blue for example). Don’t just think of paint and wallpaper when creating a feature wall. “You can use a huge variety of materials,” says Joanna. “Materials like suede, silk or wood add texture and interest. And if you have a dark room or corridor, mirrors or metallic reflective wallpapers, which are very on trend right now, are a great choice. They feel opulent and also bounce and reflect light around the space.” Advances in digital printing mean you can now have a huge variety of photographic images blown up to wall size, if you are looking for something different. Or go 3D: a collection of objects can make a striking wall feature. Hang framed photos across an entire wall or make a feature of your album collection. Feature walls are a simple but striking way to update your room. Choose the right wall and be bold with colour and you’ll soon have a room that hits all the right notes.
If you’re thinking about changing your décor, and want something striking, then a feature wall is definitely worth considering. 1 1 8 J A N U A RY 2 0 1 4
HOUSE & GARDEN
GLITZ & GLAMOUR G ilding on Wood is a delicate and highly skilled process. Once the timber has been carved the entire surface is coated with Gesso, a fine ground chalk mixed with glue. It is then re-wet with a sizing made of rabbit-skin glue and water. This makes the surface adhesive and the gold leaf is layered on and left to dry. This is called “Water Gilding” and the surface may be subsequently burnished to a mirror-like finish to create highlights. Layering the gold is far easier said than done. Gold can be beaten to less than 1000” of an inch thick and even small sheets of it are volatile and will float off in every direction. It can be controlled and directed by being picked up by a comb type brush of sable or ox hairs given a charge of static electricity by stroking the skin or hair of the gilder. As soon as the gold leaf is within an inch or two of the gesso surface it will fly to it independently and unless the gilder has positioned his brush correctly it may miss its mark and either duplicate a gold leaf already in
1 2 0 J A N U A RY 2 0 1 4
place or miss and leave a gap. Gilding on metal for fine furniture mounts is known as “Fire Gilding” or “Mercurial Gilding” and the mounts are referred to as Ormolu or Bronze D’ore. The finest of these are made of bronze, an alloy of basically copper with tin as its main additive. The bronze is cast in a mould and then hand finished by chiseling and chasing. An amalgam of gold and mercury is made and applied to the mounts which are then fired to a temperature of approximately 600 degrees at which point the mercury evaporates leaving the gold affixed to the surface. When the mercury has evaporated the gilded surface is rubbed with a brush of soft brass wire, until its surface is smooth. It is then covered with gilding wax, and again exposed to fire until the wax is burnt off. A final burnishing of the highlights completes the operation. LIGHT-UP YOUR
OUTDOOR SPACE When you spend time outdoors, entertaining your family and friends, you’ll need adequate lighting to illuminate your outside space.
W
hether you’re sitting outside on your patio area, or you wish to place a spotlight on specific areas of your garden, outdoor lighting can serve these purposes. You have a variety of options to suit your individual tastes, the size of your outdoor space, and its purpose. It’s important to consider what you need and how you will use the lighting, and with so many benefits to outdoor lighting, you can add beauty, function and safety to your outdoor areas. PRIMARY POINTS TO DECIDING ON YOUR OUTSIDE LIGHTING ARE 1. SAFETY Use a combination of uplights as well as lights installed on outdoor structures to illuminate your seating areas effectively. Outdoor lighting can add safety in a variety of ways. Light pathways to ensure that people navigate these areas safely. Use zone lighting to illuminate areas of your garden and landscape for night-time use. Zone lighting can be effective for lighting your patio, swimming pool or outdoor seating area. Illuminate driveways, garages and entryways to keep your outdoor space safe after dark. The more lights, the safer your outdoor areas will be. 2. SECURITY A well-lit driveway and garden presents a feeling of security and maintenance. When you keep your outdoor areas illuminated, you present a feeling of care and involvement. Install lights with motion detectors so they illuminate when motion activates them. A dark garden can be splashed with bright lights when someone walks through – this can be helpful to deter would-be criminals

from trespassing on your property. 3. COMFORT Extend your living area into your garden, particularly if you entertain outdoors on a regular basis. If you have a patio with seating, add comfortable and attractive lighting to enable you to use these areas after dark. The ambience of outdoor seating can be pleasant and inviting, especially when you feature attractive outdoor lighting that adds to your outdoor decor. Use a combination of lights installed on outdoor structures to illuminate your seating areas effectively. 4. DECOR Showcase and highlight specific areas with decorative lighting. By installing lights around your garden in various spots, you pull the eye to these areas and display them attractively. Lighting can be a wonderful way to display planting areas or flower gardens. Install mood lighting along outdoor buildings to add pleasant splashes of light. You can even add low-voltage exterior lights to trees and shrubs outdoors to illuminate planting areas and add beautiful accents to your exterior areas. 5. CURB APPEAL A well-lit home presents a cared-for impression to your neighbours and visitors. Your house will appear warm and inviting, and in contrast to a dark and drab home, your illuminated home will draw people in and offer a warm refuge for family and friends. Regardless of the purpose of your outdoor lighting, the benefits are all positive. From increasing safety and security to creating a warm and inviting environment, adding outdoor lighting will enhance and beautify your home.

ou need to decide on the space that is required over and above your units, worktops, appliances and sink unit. For example, if you have children, is extra eating space required? Are you looking to entertain and relax aswell as prepare and cook the evening meal? Your kitchen should be designed for whatever you are likely to want to do in it. The interior style of the rest of your home could dictate the style of your kitchen space, especially if it is open-plan, so you need to take this into consideration.
The design of your kitchen can cover a variety of themes... CONTEMPORARY KITCHENS The sleek look will provide instant gratification. Providing a more open feeling adds to the functional atmosphere of the space. That is, in essence, one of the great benefits of contemporary custom kitchen designs; the array of options available. No matter what your exact tastes and preferences, there is a contemporary kitchen design that will meet all your specific needs.
colours that hark back to the 1970s, or even appliances based on those found in American households of the 1950’s. Adding a touch of retro fun to your new kitchen can be a great way to give character to the space, and is sure to provide a few nostalgic talking points. CABINETS & WORKTOPS Cabinets are the workhorse of your kitchen, so always push your budget as far as possible. Think practically as well as aesthetically when it comes to the finish (highly polished dark colours show fingerprints easily, for example) and remember, neutrals stand the test of time more than bold colours. You can always apply brighter colours to the walls or splash-backs (glass is effective). Don’t neglect handles – they can make or break a kitchen. Chrome is effective and never dates. Avoid wooden worktops near sinks or you’ll become a slave to re-oiling, and glass worktops quickly look tired and scratched. Granite remains the top worktop choice. There are so many more materials at similar prices to the ubiquitous black. For sinks, stainless steel is best. For taps, the tri-flow system provides filtered water. You
On average, people spend in excess of £30,000 on a new kitchen. It is about creating a dream space. There are a multitude of choices when it comes to creating your dream kitchen... FRENCH COUNTRY KITCHEN Combining rustic country charm with a grand, chateau-like sophistication. We are talking an Aga, chunky wooden worktops and tiled splashbacks in earthy shades. Freestanding features and copper pans on a black wrought iron pot hanger, rustic oil bottles and richly coloured earthenware all combine to give you that French country feel. SHAKER STYLE KITCHEN This design appeals to those who adore both contemporary design and a classic look and feel. The round knobs, pillowfronted doors and beautiful woods epitomise the classic shaker style kitchen. The floor plan in a shaker kitchen is open, with cabinets often lining the sides of the kitchen. An island can make an attractive addition and can be created for you in classic shaker styling. This dignified, elegant kitchen is never excessive but nevertheless stunning to look at and work in. could also mix and match your worktops – for example, quartz and stainless steel – or vary the depth of work surfaces. KITCHEN FLOORING The flooring in your kitchen space is as important as the kitchen itself, so you need to get it right. Take advice from a flooring expert, or consult your kitchen designer. You can find more information and choices on kitchen flooring later in this guide. KITCHEN LIGHTING Safety comes first in any kitchen, so for high activity areas where you’ll be preparing food you need plenty of illumination, so work out which areas you’ll be using for practical purposes and install task lighting – i.e., focused, directional, bright light. Think of lighting as a design tool to emphasise or detract from good or bad features in a room. You can find more information and choices on kitchen lighting later in this guide. A bespoke kitchen will be tailor made for both the space and you. For pure luxury, this is the best that money can buy. YOUR KITCHEN
kitchen extension is one of the most popular home improvement projects and one that’ll really add to the enjoyment and value of your home. In this article we look at the practicalities of planning your kitchen extension.
FIRST THINGS FIRST
You’ll be investing a lot of money in this project so ask yourself how you plan to use the space: Do you want a more flexible space for the family to enjoy? Do you want a space for entertaining? Do you want a separate utility room? Do you want to bring the outside in with doors opening on to the garden? As well as considering the here and now think about 5-10 years down the line and the changing dynamics of your family. While play space may be important now, in a few years’ time it’s homework and hangout space they’ll be after. OPTION 1: KNOCKING THROUGH Knocking down a stud partition wall between your kitchen and dining room is the simplest option. Get a structural engineer in to check that the wall isn’t load bearing. If it is you’ll need an RSJ (rolled steel joint) to take the strain. If your property is leasehold you’ll need permission from the freeholder. OPTION 2: EXTENDING OUT If you’ve got time, space and budget this is the perfect blank canvas for you to create your ultimate kitchen. With no preexisting constraints to work around, you can decide exactly what goes where, from your granite island to the position of your sockets. Got your heart set on a contemporary glass ‘box’ that brings the outside in? OPTION 3: ADDING ON Another popular home improvement is installing a glazed or sky-lit roof over the galley side return on a Victorian terrace. Opening up the space makes it work that much harder and who doesn’t want a wider, lighter kitchen? HOW MUCH DOES AN KITCHEN EXTENSION COST? The Halifax Home Improvement Survey says the minimum cost of a kitchen extension is £20,000. Experts suggest that a kitchen extension can increase the value of your home by as much as 11% so if you’ve got space and budget, go for it.
GETTING PLANNING PERMISSION FOR A KITCHEN EXTENSION Good news: planning permission often isn’t necessary for small extensions. If you’re knocking through from kitchen to dining room it isn’t usually required. Neither is it necessary if you’re converting a garage, although if you’re enlarging your building’s footprint you’ll need to run it past your local planning officer. However if you live in a listed building, conservation area or area of outstanding natural beauty, you’ll need to ask your local authority for permission. Likewise if you’re planning a substantial kitchen extension you’ll need permission and full architectural drawings of the layout and elevations. Planning applications cost around £150 in England and take around eight weeks to process. It’s worth stating the obvious - all regardless of how big or small - must comply with Building Regulations. As a general rule it’s best to submit full plans to your local authority building control department to be on the safe side. THE PRACTICALITIES Bear in mind that moving water, gas and electrical points will add to the cost and complexity of the work. You’ll need a Corgi registered installer if you’re installing a gas boiler or cooker and all electrical work requires a compliance certificate under Part P of Building Regs. Another key consideration is drainage. Outlet pipes for sinks, dishwashers and washing machines need direct access to external drainage so these often dictate the layout of your kitchen extension. Remember if you start moving pipes you need to check that all work complies with Building Regulations. Consider the flow of natural light at different times of day as this will inform where you need artificial lighting. Some people choose to position their table where there’s most natural light, others prefer their main workspace to be naturally lit. Ultimately it comes down to personal preference. Light and airy conservatory style kitchens can get hot in summer, cold in winter and subsequently suffer from damp and condensation. You’ll need expert architect advice to find the right solution for your property. ONE FINAL THING While the extension is being carried out there will be times when your kitchen is unusable so if you have the space to create a makeshift ‘kitchen’ it’ll be a real stress-saver. It’s only short term, so consider moving to a friend or relative’s. Bear in mind that a kitchen extension is not a quick job. Depending on the scale you could be talking a couple of weeks or a couple of months. Just keep telling yourself, it’ll be worth it in the end!
The kitchen is the heart of the home so extending it to create a big open plan space to relax with the family and wow your friends is a good call. 1 3 6 J A N U A RY 2 0 1 5

CURVES Creating features such as curved kitchen worktops, breakfast bars, dining extensions or fluid worktops gives the kitchen an organic look that’s very much in keeping with modern retro styling. If you’re upgrading and including a brightly coloured retro fridge freezer, for example, it’s likely to have much more attention to detail in the lines of the shape than your standard white kitchen appliance. Carrying on this curvy, sleek look into moulded and shaped worktops draws the decor together, making your kitchen the true heart of the home, as it’s supposed to be. In terms of fixtures such as lighting and kitchen taps; chrome suits the retro theme quite well whilst it’s bang on trend for modern kitchens too. Having a retro kitchen in your home is the perfect way to create a unique kitchen design that differs from the typical modern layout. Finally, don’t overlook the final details – vintage tea, coffee and sugar jars, light fittings, prints, fabrics and tea towels all go a long way to finishing off the retro kitchens look.

What would add the most value to a property? The kitchen/diner area; it’s the hub of the home or a good quality bathroom will also always add value. How would you suggest they set their budget? It depends if it is purely an investment or their home. I suggest a budget in line with their expectations. There are some great ways in which to cut cost and still deliver a 5* finish. Are people concerned about how long a project will take? Yes, time is usually tight. I would always give the client a realistic timeline, for example a kitchen renovation
without an extension would take 2-3 weeks. What are common pitfalls people experience during a renovation? Colour can dramatically change a room, and what looks good on a small swatch can look very different on the wall. People waste time looking for suppliers and products themselves. By hiring a renovation expert the process is not only more enjoyable but cost-effective. Need an experienced and enthusiastic expert to help you avoid the pitfalls? GOOD KITCHEN DESIGN
STARTS RIGHT UNDER YOUR FEET
T
o put on a fantastic floor show, start by looking at the construction of your existing floor and make sure it’s suitable for the type of flooring you’ve got in mind. Heavy materials such as stone or terracotta tiles need a solid concrete base. If you’re laying a floor over wood, go for lighter materials such as lino, vinyl or wooden floorboards.
VINYL FLOORING Comfortable and warm underfoot, vinyl is one of the most cost-effective flooring options and comes in a range of colours and patterns. For a durable surface that won’t fade, choose a vinyl with the colour running through - those with surface patterns tend to develop a patchy look over time. Your supplier can advise you on the correct grade for your kitchen and, if you have the budget, have it installed by a professional, as badly fitting vinyl will peel at the edges. To keep it looking pristine, sweep it regularly and clean with a non-abrasive cleaner. STONE OR SLATE Consult an expert if you’re thinking of using stone or slate on a kitchen floor as its porous nature means it can stain easily. It’s also one of the most expensive floors you can buy, but it will add value to your home. To reduce the risk of staining, go for the less porous slate rather than marble or limestone and make sure you have it professionally sealed. Look at travertine too – a natural stone made in Italy from calcium carbonate. It has a pitted appearance, comes in many colours and stands up to most cleaning products, making it the durable choice. If you have kids and pets running around, natural stone may not be the best option for you.
1 4 2 J A N U A RY 2 0 1 5
LAMINATE This is a great, cost-effective option that creates an authentic, real wood plank effect at a fraction of the cost of the real thing. These days, you’ll also find stone and ceramic tile effects too. Laminates are tough so they’re ideal for busy households with lots of traffic in the kitchen. To create the appearance of real wood floorboards, choose a laminate with bevelled edges that form a v shape between the planks when they’re butted up together. Even better, this flooring is designed to be clicked together so there’s no need for messy glue and you can even lay it yourself if you’re a competent DIYer. HARDWOOD A real hardwood floor is expensive, but will add value to your home. Treat it with a Polyurethane finish to make it easier to maintain and clean. Wipe spills up quickly though, as any water sitting for a length of time on the floor will result in warping. Unlike laminates, if your floor gets damaged, you don’t have to replace the boards – you can simply sand them down and treat them again. CERAMIC TILES A popular choice for kitchens as they come in so many colours, textures and patterns allowing you to create your own unique look. You can even use a central colour and create a tiled border all around to frame the floor. Remember though, you need a solid concrete base for tiles as floorboards would shift underneath and cause cracks to form. Ceramic can be cold underfoot so consider installing underfloor heating. Choosing your kitchen flooring is as crucial as choosing the overall theme for your kitchen, so consult a specialist designer for further advice.

Although some people equate contemporary with cold, it does not have to be so. “Cool” materials such as glass and steel used in a contemporary kitchen design can be “warmed” up by the strategic use of accessories or colour. Jewels of the Mediterranean Frustrated by the uniformity of high-street jewellery, Rosita Heshmati’s discoveries inspired her to set up an online designer jewellery boutique. Rosita’s craving for quality and expressive unique designs for everyday wear and special occasions led to her buying jewellery directly from small designers during frequent trips to southern Europe. “I soon had a jewellery box full of these wonderful creations and became the envy of my friends who started asking me to choose items for them whenever business or pleasure took me back to this beautiful part of the world. Nothing
makes me happier than scouring the small streets of Venice or Istanbul for undiscovered creative gems.” The realisation that many other women desire the same thing - jewellery that sets them apart with its originality and finesse that comes from centuries of traditional jewellery-making, combined with a Mediterranean lyrical expressionism - prompted her to explore showcasing her collections and so Expressions Des Bijoux was born. “My mission is simple – to give women access to stunning jewellery, reflecting a variety of tastes and styles from refined simplicity to luxurious drama.”
