The Monaco Grandprix
he magic of Monaco will truly be in evidence from the 24th May when this beautiful Principality hosts formula One’s 70th Grand Prix. In the words of Graham Hill, it’s the only Grand Prix where you meet lamp-posts, trees, nightclubs, houses, hotels, curbs, gutters and boats. For one glorious weekend in May Monaco becomes a festival of style, colour and ear-splitting noise, blended with glamourous members of the ‘jet set’ and stars of screen and stage. Remember, Cannes Film Festival is in full swing just along the coast and is the perfect warm-up act for Monaco’s Grand Prix. We especially love Monaco during this week because it just doesn’t sleep and its vibrant atmosphere after the excitement of the racing keeps on going. Stunning cocktails, fabulous restaurants, dancing and people watching all come to the fore, but what has been missing until 2012 has been a beach party. Thankfully this year the secluded beach at Larvotto will play host to the exclusive Crazy Bear Beach Party. champagne will be flowing, along with great barbecue food,, and guests will be dancing to Boy George’s DJ set, Shuffler,The brilliant Fun lovin Criminals and Eddie Jordan on drums with his band the Robbers. All this in addition to fire, Vaudeville and burlesque dancers. What more could we ask for? Entry to this epitome of chic is on a strictly ticket only basis and numbers are limited. You need to be a part of this night to remember – I have seen what the guys at Crazy Bear are capable of and I really wouldn’t want to miss it. enquiries@crazybeargrandprixevents.co.uk Feathered Edge Events Ltd www.flygrandprix.com 01749 890053

Thursday’s highlight is the Group 1 Gold Cup, a battle of stamina and determination over two miles and four furlongs - this undisputed long distance world championship is not for the faint hearted! Style, elegance and the height of the summer social calendar all combine on Gold Cup Day, colloquially known as ‘Ladies’ Day. Although the whole week of Royal Ascot is a fashion show like no other, it is Thursday when the designer creations and millinery masterpieces reach new heights. To commemorate 300 years of racing, the Hampton Court Stakes has been renamed the Tercentenary Stakes. Friday 22nd June

the ‘Ascot Derby’ - as its conditions mirror those of the Epsom Classic. This is the perfect way to start the weekend with friends and work colleagues. Saturday 23rd June
The final day of the Royal Meeting always provides a dramatic climax and features one of the world’s most important and international races, the Golden Jubilee Stakes, renamed as the Diamond Jubilee Stakes in 2012 to mark Her Majesty The Queen’s important milestone. The race is also the second British leg of the Global Sprint Challenge. Saturday is a relatively new addition to the Royal Meeting, having been introduced as recently as 2002. Although the fashions are as elaborate as they are during the week, there is a pronounced, relaxed family feel as many people who are unable to attend until the weekend come to enjoy the experience of the greatest race meeting in the world. Royal Ascot is without doubt the greatest race meeting in the world and a celebration of everything that is uniquely British. However despite being willed on by the sixfigure crowd that thronged the Downs and millions viewing on Television, Carlton House could only finish third, narrowly beaten by the Investec Derby winner Pour Moi. Guest of Honour at this year’s Investec Derby Festival is Willie Carson OBE, five times British Champion Jockey and four times Epsom Derby winner. Willie Carson has won 17 British Classic Races, 11 Irish Classics, exceeded 100 winners in a season 23 times, and celebrated a total of 3,828 races, making him

Sponsored by Coutts. V&A Museum, South Kensington, SW7 19th May 2012 - 6th January 2013
A
spectacular exhibition of more than 60 ballgowns from 1950 to the present day. Ballgowns: British Glamour Since 1950 will be the first exhibition in the newly renovated V&A Fashion Galleries and will feature beautiful ballgowns, red carpet evening gowns and catwalk showstoppers. There is a strong British design tradition of creating sumptuous ballgowns, through the work of designers such as Vivienne Westwood, John Galliano and Alexander McQueen. The exhibition will cover more than 60 years of a tradition that continues to flourish. Ballgowns will show specially made designs for social events such as private parties, royal state occasions, debutante balls 34 m ay 2 0 1 2
and red carpet events. Tour de force eveningwear from the V&A’s vast collection by designers such as Norman
Hartnell, Victor Stiebel, Zandra Rhodes, Catherine Walker, Jonathan Saunders and Hussein Chalayan will be on show, as well as dresses fresh from the catwalk shows of Alexander McQueen, Giles, Erdem, Roksanda Illincic, Mark Fast and Jenny Packham. Innovative designer Gareth Pugh has created a stunning metallic leather dress especially for the exhibition. Royal gowns always make headlines. A selection of royal ballgowns will be displayed,

including a Norman Hartnell gown designed for Elizabeth the Queen Mother, Princess Diana’s ‘Elvis Dress’ designed by Catherine Walker and gowns worn by today’s young royals. Dresses worn by Sandra Bullock, Daphne Guinness, Elizabeth Hurley and Bianca Jagger will also be shown. Since the 1950s, occasions for wearing formal attire have evolved from the private event to the public parade. In the post-war period as Europe struggled toward recovery, extravagant, exclusive balls provided glittering backdrops for splendid couture gowns, so helping to stimulate sartorial consumption and aspiration in Britain. The emergence of the charity ball in the 1980s provided a new platform for a wider society to dress to impress. More recently it is the red carpet that acts as the most important site of fashionable splendour. What the stars of a film wear to a premiere can sometimes deliver as many column inches as the film itself. The ground floor of the exhibition will feature over 30 ballgowns from the Museum’s permanent collection. Designs include gowns by Hardy Amies, Ossie Clark, Bill Gibb, Belleville Sassoon, Murray Arbeid, Bruce Oldfield and Julien MacDonald. The display will include film as well as contextual images and accessories such as elegant evening bags, gloves and shoes. Ballgowns: British Glamour Since 1950 is part of Fashion 2012, the official fashion industry activity for the Olympic year. Created by the British Fashion Council, it is a central platform under which the industry is able to showcase and celebrate British fashion. It will provide a core focus for the industry and a schedule for the major fashion events and activities throughout London’s Olympic year.

NAR C ISS Notting Hill based ‘Narciss’ wins designer of the year for second year running
L
uxury ready to wear label Narciss has just won Designer of the Year at the Latvian Style and Fashion Awards for the second consecutive year. Chosen by TellusFashion, the exclusive fashion concierge, it is the second year in a row that the designer Alise Trautmane has won the much coveted title at the awards, which is judged by top photographers, magazine editors and bloggers. Alise says, “It’s amazing to get this very reputable award ‘Designer of the Year’. It’s a great honour… thank you!” Alise originally pursued a successful career in the corporate world. The launch of Narciss was rather unexpected as many never thought that Alise would be associated with catwalk shows, beautiful dresses and glamorous accessories. Though her unconditional

love for beauty, fashion and design saw her quit the corporate world and embark on a very different career path, attending courses at Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design and Instituto Europeo di Design. She now produces chic dresses that are designed to make women fall in love with themselves and embrace their sensuality. It has been an exciting time for the label, who exhibited their Spring Summer 12 collection at Riga Fashion Week last September and more recently their Autumn Winter 12 collection at the MercedesBenz Berlin Fashion Week. In January, Narciss was named by WWB as a ‘label to watch’ and has had a presence on the red carpet recently with a number of high profile names wearing her designs to movie premieres. Combining femininity with a modern edge, the new

Narciss Spring/Summer collection includes a wide range of flattering shapes such as midi skirts, straight-leg trousers and cropped jackets; and luxe materials including lace, viscose and silk. Surprisingly, Alise takes her inspiration from her Aunt Zize who enjoyed a long and beautiful life with a wardrobe to match. The collection combines a slightly nostalgic mood, looking back to the silhouettes of the 1950’s and 1960’s merged with some of this season’s most captivating trends. Chic dresses are prominent in the collection, both in the soft pastel hues of blue, pink and peach as well as statement block colour such as orange and the key trend of monochrome. The Narciss flagship boutique is located in the heart of Notting Hill on Westbourne Grove. The key focus of the N arciss collection is on the cut, the quality fabrics and stylish femininity. Infinite attention goes into ensuring each piece is tailored to perfection and with interesting detailing. For the stylish urban lady, her designs hit the perfect note between glamour and practicality, making them the go-to designer for outfits that will take them from day cool to evening sophistication. Using only the finest natural fabrics and manufactured with precision tailoring, the Narciss collection symbolises sophistication and combines femininity with a modern edge. Dresses are the primary focus of each collection, from fabulous evening gowns to beautiful dresses fit to take you from day to night. Each garment is designed to be a unique investment piece, with a nod to the ‘trend du jour’ yet made to blend in effortlessly with your existing wardrobe. Why not go see for yourself…

talian shoemaker to pay highest ever UK retail rent on Bond Street Italian luxury shoemaker Salvatore Ferragamo is agreeing a deal to pay a record £1059 per sq ft UK rent at its Bond Street store. This will break the £1,000 per square foot mark for the first time, a source familiar with the deal told Reuters. The deal would also break the previous record of £965 per square foot for the valuable Zone A front section of a store set by jeweller Piaget on the same glitzy central London shopping strip in December 2009. Under the deal between landlord NFU Mutual

pension fund and Ferragamo, the retailer will extend its lease and increase its rent from £600 to £1059 per square foot at 24 Old Bond Street as part of a plan to expand its retail space, the source said. Bond Street rents far exceed other central London shopping streets. Rents on the second most expensive strip of Oxford Street are on average £200 per square foot lower and Marylebone High Street peaks at about £225. NFU declined to comment. Ferragamo was not immediately available to comment. Fierce competition for space on Bond Street, the UK’s most expensive shopping stretch and the

second priciest in Europe behind Paris’ Avenue des Champs Elysées, has driven up rents and spurred some deep-pocketed retailers to buy stores in order to guarantee ownership of top sites. Unlike mid-market retailers, luxury brands have bounced back strongly from the depths of the 2008 downturn, helped by strong demand from emerging markets such as China and Russia. The acute space shortage on the half mile stretch combined with strong demand from global brands that see a Bond Street presence as essential to European expansion plans, may boost rents to £1,500 by 2013, consultancy Cushman & Wakefield said.

Q A Sue Gilbert, a property and renovation expert has seen the market change over the years. With experience from both an estate agent perspective and as a renovation expert, Susan certainly knows what buyers want. Sue, with TV shows like Grand Designs are renovations increasing? These shows certainly help to give people inspiration. It’s lovely to meet with clients and help them to turn their ideas into workable solutions.
What would add the most value to a property? The kitchen/diner area; it’s the hub of the home or a good quality bathroom will also always add value. How would you suggest they set their budget? It depends if it is purely an investment or their home. I suggest a budget in line with their expectations. There are some great ways in which to cut cost and still deliver a 5* finish. Are people concerned about how long a project will take? Yes, time is usually tight. I would always give the client a realistic timeline, for example a kitchen renovation
without an extension would take 2-3 weeks. What are common pitfalls people experience during a renovation? Colour can dramatically change a room, and what looks good on a small swatch can look very different on the wall. People waste time looking for suppliers and products themselves. By hiring a renovation expert the process is not only more enjoyable but cost-effective. Need an experienced and enthusiastic expert to help you avoid the pitfalls? Evoque RANGE ROVER
Victoria Beckham SPECIAL EDITION WITH
MAKES GLOBAL DEBUT
L
and Rover and Victoria Beckham have unveiled a new bespoke luxurious, hand-finished Range Rover Evoque Special Edition. The exclusively design is the result of a collaboration between Land Rover Design, led by Gerry McGovern with Victoria Beckham, winner of the coveted Designer Brand of the Year award at the 2011 British Fashion Awards. Victoria was appointed Creative Design Executive in July 2010 and has worked with the Land Rover design team over the past 18 months to create her Special Edition. Victoria Beckham said: “I am very excited to be working with Land Rover as I have an enormous amount of respect for the brand. I’ve always driven a Range Rover, for me they are the epitome of quality and luxury. When I first started working with the team I did a lot of research, and created mood boards to show the team my love of timeless and classic design. I looked at yachts, luxury jets and classic cars. It’s the small detail that makes all the difference. I want everyone who gets into this car to feel special and empowered by its quality and craftsmanship. I like that it feels luxurious but also has quite a classic edge to it as well as a contemporary feel.” m ay 2 0 1 2

Land Rover Design Director Gerry McGovern said: “The design of Evoque has truly captured the hearts of customers worldwide. Working with Victoria the intention was to create a Special Edition that extends its character in a new direction through understated, restrained colour and detail changes. Both Land Rover and Victoria Beckham are British luxury brands with credibility and global appeal, this dual ‘Britishness’ makes the collaboration even more exciting especially when considering the huge audience for bespoke products around the world. Working with Victoria we quickly recognised our similar design tastes and ambition for this car. For example at the first meeting, Victoria herself inspired the use of rose gold. She was wearing dark clothes and no jewellery apart from a rose gold, 44 m ay 2 0 1 2
man’s watch. I was struck by the juxtaposition of the masculine watch on a very elegant, feminine wrist. We both agreed it was the ideal way to introduce a softer touch to the bold, assertive exterior colour scheme.Throughout the process we were keen to ensure that the vehicle would appeal equally to both men and women, in fact Victoria always maintained that she wanted her husband David to be proud to drive this car. We fully enjoyed working with Victoria and I am confident this special edition will appeal to discerning luxury consumers globally.” Quintessential British luxury is a hallmark of both the Land Rover and Victoria Beckham brands. This Special Edition allows that impression to be further heightened through the use of the finest quality materials and

craftsmanship. Powered by the lightweight, all-aluminium 240PS 2.0-litre petrol engine the Range Rover Evoque Special Edition will be hand-finished by Land Rover’s Engineering to Order division (ETO) in Warwickshire. Essential to the design is the high quality hand-finished matt grey paint, unique 20” gloss black forged alloy wheels and luxurious rose-gold details, limited solely to this Special Edition. Complimenting the ultra-modern, stealth-like exterior is an elegant and luxurious interior. The sport design four-seats are finished in a semi-aniline Vintage Tan leather, with a bold ‘baseball’ stitch detail chosen by Victoria as a tongue-in-cheek reference to her sporting husband David. The same leather is also used to cover the door inserts, arm rests and central storage box lid. Another personal touch are the exclusive and ultra-luxurious floor mats. The designer explained that when she was a young girl, her father owned a Rolls-Royce and she would enjoy taking her shoes off to sink her bare feet into the thick carpeting. Land Rover’s designers replicated this for her by using mohair, usually reserved for luxury clothing, to make the mats. Bespoke luggage completes the holistic design package that is the Range Rover Evoque Special Edition with Victoria Beckham. This four-piece set is based on the designer’s own luggage range, using the same high-quality internal structure and clothed in hand stitched black leather. The set comprises two his and her’s wheeled suitcases and wash bags, all of which are lined in the same microsuede used for the roof lining, and as a finishing touch the zip pulls are finished in the same matt grey as the exterior. A beautiful hand stitched leather wallet, with rose-gold detail containing a guide to the exclusive features of the car is cobranded Range Rover Evoque and signed by Victoria Beckham. Victoria Beckham is a joint venture between Victoria Beckham and Simon Fuller’s XIX Entertainment Ltd. About Land Rover

a boutique 80s inspired nightclub
The 80s are back! s
till in their 20s, young entrepreneurs, Charlie Gilkes and Duncan Stirling launched Maggie’s: an exclusive 1980s inspired boutique club in the heart of Chelsea. Their other highprofile venues share unusual themes; with their hidden speakeasy bar, Barts, which opened to rave reviews in February 2009 and most recently Bunga Bunga, an Englishman’s Italian, Bar, Pizzeria and Karaoke, which launched in September 2011. As children of the 1980s, Duncan and Charlie have created a kitsch and amusing tribute to this great decade in which they were both born. It is exactly thirty years since this vibrant era began and
48 m ay 2 0 1 2
they felt the time was right for a club of this nature. Maggie’s is named after 1980s Prime Minister Maggie Thatcher, who was in power throughout this ten year period. The club is walking distance from Thatcher’s present home, though whether she chooses to visit remains to be seen! A bottle of vintage Champagne signed by Thatcher herself (with letter of authenticity) is the centrepiece of the diverse Maggies menu which is depicted through classic 1980s view masters.
The music is a mixture of classics from the 1980s, and stars from the era play regular DJ sets. The Maggie’s bar tenders are dressed as Tom Cruise from the 80s cult movie, Cocktail, and serve a range of delicious drinks and cocktails from Pina Coladas and Daiquiris to the unforgettable Babycham. Club-goers can surround themselves with walls of iconic 80s images and paraphernalia, and can sit and relax in either a Madonna or Wham! Booth. Charlie Gilkes says: “Both Duncan and I

love the general style and music of the 1980s, but have always found 80s nights to be very cheesy and naff. We wanted to create somewhere upmarket which totally encapsulates the period from its history to its music, drinks and style, where people can relive or indeed live this amazing decade for the first time’’. Duncan Stirling says: “There is no doubt the 80s was ahead of its time and elements are creeping back into our popular culture today. You only need to turn on the radio to hear new bands playing 80s inspired synthesizer music or walk down the street and see the ladies all wearing big shoulder pads from Topshop.”

New CEO Appointment ROGER MARRIS JOINS THE RITZ CLUB AS CHIEF EXECUTIVE Acknowledged industry trailblazer to spearhead the development of The Ritz Club
Roger Marris has joined The Ritz Club as Chief Executive. He brings with him over 17 years operational, commercial and business management experience. Scotsborn Marris who studied law and politics at Aberdeen University through a bursary with the British Army, and went on to be a Captain with the Black Watch (now The Royal Highland Regiment), moved into senior management in 1993 when he left the services for the commercial world. Although Roger has some exciting ideas for the Club including some subtle improvements, some things though will not change. “The Ritz Club brand will continue to be a strong, luxurious and stylish brand, and it will sit comfortably alongside our sister companies The Ritz Hotel, and Ritz, Fine Jewellery. As CEO, I intend to spend my time thinking about what our customers would expect from their ‘Ritz Club experience’.” Roger has set ambitious targets for the 54 m ay 2 0 1 2

Sainsbury’s Announces
Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant Revealed Sunday 3rd June 2012, 2pm - 6pm
T
he organisers of the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant have revealed the details of the 1000-boat tribute to Her Majesty The Queen’s 60-year reign. One of the largest public events ever held in London, the Pageant will take place on the river from Battersea Bridge to Tower Bridge. The flotilla itself will be over seven miles long and will include some 25 miles of Thames river bank and pass under 14 bridges. It will take 70 minutes to pass any given point. This unique spectacle, inspired by a rich history and tradition of entertainment and theatre on the Thames, is expected to include 20,000 participants on the water, millions of spectators on the river banks and London’s public spaces, and a global 58 m ay 2 0 1 2
audience expected by the major broadcasters to number many hundreds of millions. Mayor of London, Boris Johnson said, “I am proud that London can play such an important role in the Diamond Jubilee celebrations and there couldn’t be a better start to an outstanding summer of aweinspiring events in the capital. The Thames Pageant and associated events around the capital will not only provide the most fitting tribute to Her Majesty’s 60 years on the throne but will be an amazing opportunity to show off to the world London’s pride in its heritage and traditions ahead of the Olympics” The Music Herald Barges
The flotilla will be divided into ten sections, with music
herald barges separating each one. The Pageant’s music will be a diverse mixture of the contemporary and classical. The final music herald barge will be the London Philharmonic Orchestra, performing a British repertoire, including music by Benjamin Britten and Gustav Holst. The Sequence of the Flotilla
Heralded by The Royal Jubilee Bells, and led by Gloriana, the hand-built, 88-foot rowbarge, will include rowed and paddled vessels, modern row boats, kayaks and Dragon boats. The second section includes boats carrying the flags of the Commonwealth nations, Realms, Territories and Dependencies. Then comes the Royal
section, with support vessels from the former Royal Yacht Britannia, accompanying the Pageant’s flagship, the Royal Barge, The Spirit of Chartwell, on which The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, and other members of the Royal family will travel, decorated and adorned for the occasion at the head of the royal section of the flotilla. The Prince of Wales will play a key role on the day as Patron of the Pageant. This will be followed immediately by the Guard of Honour, the Dunkirk Little Ships, historic vessels, working boats, including steam boats and tugs, and then an array of leisure vessels, narrow boats and Dutch barges. The final two sections are designated for passenger vessels, allowing for significant public participation as part of the flotilla itself. Applications to take part from boat owners from the UK and the Commonwealth have been three times oversubscribed. The Pageant organisers made the final decisions on vessels selection, with advice from the Port of London Authority (PLA) and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. Battersea Park Jubilee Festival
As part of the planned entertainment for the Pageant, there will also be a festival held in Battersea Park, where visitors will be able to watch the flotilla as it passes by the park’s northern Thameside. The Jubileethemed entertainment, curated by Hemingway Design and Clare Patey, will be a day-long programme of funfair, competitions, games, food and cookery, storytelling, fashion, and live music through the decades. Celebrating Continuity I
t is not surprising that the New Yard-O-Led Diamond Jubilee Ballpoint and Pencil have more than a passing resemblance to those made for Britain’s only other Diamond Jubilee – Queen Victoria’s, in 1897. The small British company in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, not only employs the same levels of craftsmanship that were used more than a century ago, it has also based its design on a pencil, called ‘The Pointer’, that dates back to the period. The cap of Yard-O-Led’s Diamond Jubilee Ballpoint and Pencil features the commemorative hallmark of Queen Elizabeth II’s head, created specifically to mark 60 years on the throne. Six other hallmarks are individually applied to the barrel of the reassuringly heavy pens and pencils, before each one is individually numbered by hand. Tim Tufnell, the Director of Yard-O-Led, and John Freeman – one of the craftsmen who makes the Diamond Jubilee pens and pencils – have both celebrated their 40th Anniversary at the company, while John’s brother, Dennis, has notched up an even more remarkable 45 years. The workshops are full of old but beautifully

maintained machines and tools that are every bit as durable as the craftsmen who use them. No other pens in the world are made using such traditional skills at every stage in their creation, and with so few people now having the skills the company needs, Yard-O-Led provides a way to protect as well as enjoy all that is best about British craftsmanship. • Yard-O-Led’s history stretches back to 1822 when Sampson Mordan invented the first ever propelling pencil. • Each Yard-O-Led pen and pencil has a lifetime guarantee and is individually numbered and hallmarked – making it unique. • The distinctive hand-chased Victorian finish, available on several designs, requires at least 2,000 strikes to create the exquisite pattern. • The team of highly skilled silversmiths are based in workshops within Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter.

To launch the category in its opening year, the RHS has commissioned Tony Heywood and Alison Condie to create a unique Fresh Garden which combines sculpture, video, sound and smell with ambitious planting. This dramatic garden will set the tone for the other gardens in this category and for this section of the showground. In 2012, the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, sponsored by M&G Investments, and its exhibitors will celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of HM The Queen, the show’s Royal patron. 2012 will mark HM The Queen’s 48th visit to the show, which she has attended each year without a break since 1971. Since 1816 the Society has received formal patronage from the reigning monarch, and HM Queen Elizabeth II follows in the footsteps of her ancestors Queen Victoria, King George VI and her mother Queen Elizabeth amongst others. The RHS will celebrate the Jubilee with exhibitions of photographs of HM The Queen at Chelsea as well as a specially commissioned flower bed. Exhibitors will mark the event in a variety of ways. The RHS Chelsea Flower Show is renowned as the social event of the summer. open Garden sQuares Weekend LONDON PARKS & Gardens Trust are delighted to announce that 212 gardens will be taking part in the extremely popular Open Garden Squares Weekend, held throughout London every June. The 2012 weekend will take place immediately after the extended Diamond Jubilee Bank Holiday and for the first time, the event will be in association with the National Trust. This year 23 new gardens will be opening their gates for the first time - these range from several National Trust gardens to community gardens to schools, urban ecology centres, roof-gardens and allotments, offering a wide range of activities such as visits to an Observation Beehive in Greenwich, to an exhibition of Art & Sculpture in Holland Park. Here are just some of the open gardens this year.... Acton Community Garden (W3/ Ealing) will open on Saturday from 11am - 4pm. It is a small garden featuring a 'Capital Growth' community vegetable growing area, nature pond and example areas of meadow and woodland. Maintained by the Borough's Rangers with assistance from community groups and volunteers at set times. 76 m ay 2 0 1 2
*Bramford Community Garden (SW18/ Wandsworth). Open both days 2-5pm, Bramford Community Garden is designed and managed as a model of sustainability. Run by Transition Town Wandsworth volunteers, it aims to provide wildlife benefit, incorporate productive elements and be beautiful; contributing to its setting within a public park and educating the community on environmental issues in gardening. The garden includes a wild flower meadow, fruit orchard; edible plants in raised beds and mixed amongst herbaceous borders. Leighton House (W14/ Kensington & Chelsea). Open both days 10am - 5pm. The tranquil garden of the leading Victorian artist Frederic, Lord
Leighton (1830-1896) is located on the edge of Holland Park. The garden was restored in 1997 with the generous support from the Heritage Lottery Fund, on the basis of a plan of the house and garden dating from 1896. This showed the formal beds immediately in front of the house, and a large expanse of lawn with herbaceous borders around the perimeter. A trellis covered part of the path running up the west side of the garden and the two mounds originally laid out were evidently planted with two substantial trees. On Sunday between 10am-1pm, contemporary artist Julian Wild will be hosting workshops enabling visitors to add to his work 'Making the Connection', which is constructed out of pipe sections. • St Paul's Churchyard Covent Garden (WC2E/ Westminster). Open on Sunday 9am - 5pm. The burial ground of St. Paul's Covent Garden dates from 1633, and was laid out to gardens in the 1850s. The award-winning garden provides a calm and tranquil space in what can be a stressful part of the city. There is ample seating for informal picnics and a brilliant setting for Inigo Jones's masterpiece, St. Paul's Church. *Waterlow Park Kitchen Garden (N6/ Camden). Open both days 10am - 4pm. In
1889, Sir Sydney Waterlow gave his gardens to the people of London as 'gardens for the gardenless'. In 2011, the original site of the kitchen garden was restored and re-opened as a community resource for growing vegetables, fruit, herbs and flowers. There are 10 raised beds, each one managed by a different local organisation. These include two primary schools, two mentalhealth agencies, three local gardeners' groups, the Friends of Waterlow Park and HICAN, a local conservation group. *Capital Growth Garden For more information, please visit www.opensquares.org Tickets cost £9 if bought in advance and £12 during the weekend. Open Garden Squares Weekend is run by the London Parks & Gardens Trust to raise awareness of the significant social, cultural, environmental and economic contribution that garden and squares make to the capital and its inhabitants. The Trust provides a centre for education, research, and creative projects for the improvement and conservation of London's green urban spaces. www. londongardenstrust.org Open Garden Squares Weekend will be participating in The Chelsea Fringe and will be the culmination of three exciting weeks of horticultural 'happenings', popup gardens and instillations.

A dramatic exhibition environment will present Louboutin’s artistic personality and creative approach. It will examine the many sources of his creativity, shoes inspired by performance, cabaret and the showgirl; fantasy and fairy tale; art and architecture; film; landscape and travel. The exhibition will also focus on the handcrafted shoe, one-off designs which incorporate his highly innovative ideas, forms and materials. There will be a special section dedicated to the shoes designed for ‘Fetish’ an exhibition at the La Gallerie Du Passage, Paris in 2007, a unique collaboration of photography between Louboutin and acclaimed artist David Lynch. At the core of the exhibition will be a unique exploration of Louboutin’s design process, taking the visitor through every stage of the design journey, revealing how a shoe is constructed, from the initial drawing and first prototype through to production in the factory. Looking beyond design and production the exhibition will also explore the company’s innovative store design in which Louboutin is always closely involved.

Ultra-Rare £1m Lamborghini Reventón On sale at London Motorexpo, 11-17Th June, Canary Wharf
W
ell-heeled petrolheads will have a unique opportunity to take possession of one of the world’s rarest supercars on the planet this summer, when an ultra-exclusive Lamborghini Reventón supercar features in an exclusive H&H Classics sale being held at London’s Motorexpo . Expected to achieve more than £1 million, the Reventón being offered for private sale at Motorexpo was one of only 20 produced and is thought to be the only example in the UK, making this a truly unique opportunity for automotive collectors. The Reventón was revealed to the public for the first time at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2007 and, despite commanding an asking price of €1 million (plus local taxes), all 20 examples were pre-sold before the car had even been unveiled. Powered by a 6.5-litre V12 engine producing 650bhp, the carbonfibre Reventón can crack the 0-62 mph sprint in just 3.4 seconds and go on to a top speed of 211mph, ensuring the car has more than enough pace to live up to its stunning F-22 Raptor jet fighter-inspired body. As part of its ‘Supercars and Superclassics’ sale, H&H will be presenting an Auburn Speedster replica as well as a number of vehicles from brands such as Ferrari, Pagani, Maserati, and Koenigsegg. “The appearance, let alone sale, of a car as rare as the Lamborghini Reventón is sure to attract a large number of supercar enthusiasts and collectors to Motorexpo this summer,” commented Graeme Carver, Motorexpo CEO. “But even those who can’t 88 m ay 2 0 1 2
quite justify the £1 million asking price for the Reventón can get up close to their potential next purchase – be it classic or modern. Alongside H&H’s impressive catalogue of vehicles a host of car manufacturers will display more than 250 new models. With on-the-road prices starting from less than £8,000 there will be a car for every buyer,” he concluded. Motorexpo is open daily in Canary Wharf from 10am to 6pm , Monday 11th - Saturday 16th and 11am to 5pm on Sunday 17th June. In addition to the cars being displayed by H&H, a number of leading automotive brands have already confirmed their attendance, including Bentley, BMW, Jaguar, Kia, Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Vauxhall and Volvo. Motorexpo offers visitors unrivalled interactivity, with all vehicles being open and available for people to sit in and enjoy. Motorexpo is also offering full test-drive capabilities with Motorexpo DriveME, giving visitors the chance to get behind the wheel of the very latest models on the roads around the famous Canary Wharf business and shopping district. For more information about the show visit www.motorexpo.com. Further information about the vehicles being offered by H&H is available at the company’s website: www.classic-auctions.com.

hen Helen Turkington, one of Irelands foremost interior designers opened her first London store on St. Johns Hill in Clapham in April 2010, she was introducing a new concept to the London Interiors scene, designer fabrics by the roll. Helen travels extensively twice a year to source interesting and versatile fabrics for curtaining and upholstery direct from the mills around Europe. Because she does them in quantity, the consumer gets them at 40 % less, starting at ÂŁ 15,00 per metre. The showroom is cleverly laid out in colour palettes so the fabrics complement each other perfectly for curtaining
and upholstery, making it easy to bring a scheme for a room together. Essentially the showroom is a one stop shop. Alongside the fabrics, you can also view selected pieces from Helens range of Furniture and sofas which are bespoke made. Also on display is the full range of home accessories and lighting. A full interior design service is available in store, where one of the designers can help bring a scheme together. Helen has also created a paint range of 36 washable colours which are manufactured in Ireland for her. The range was designed to work with Helens fabrics, every fabric having a complementary paint colour. The colours span a
comprehensive palette, ranging from beautiful pale greys such as Lipizzaner Grey and St. Remy through to muted greeny tones, Woven Flax and bolder stronger blues such as Belgian Blue and Cinema Navy. All the paints are available in Matt Emulsion, Satinwood and a special kitchen finish for cabinetry. This month sees the launch of the new Helen Turkington website. Now all 400 fabrics are available to sample and purchase online. It is a really exciting departure for the company as suddenly all three collections the fabrics, furniture and paints are being brought together online for the first time. The Helen Turkington range of furniture
which comprises of Helens own collection of upholstery and woodwork such as consoles, side tables and dining tables is now all displayed along with a Belgian and French collection of furniture for more casual living spaces. While Helen is well known for designing beautiful and stylish private homes, she is also venturing into designing show apartments for developers. This was a huge part of her business in Ireland during the boom years of the economy there, so she is really glad to continue this part of the business in the UK. She was recently approached by St. George PLC developers to design a penthouse apartment at Kew Bridge.

he City of London Festival is a music, dance, art, culture and intellectual festival that will turn the city’s square mile into a magical place to be over the summer - not just a place of finance and trade. There are over 155 performances, many of them world premières taking place in some of the square mile’s most iconic locations. The Festival’s theme, City of London - Trading Places with 94 m ay 2 0 1 2
the World will be brought to life with performances from internationally acclaimed stars including Sir Colin Davis, who conducted at the first CoLF, performances of new music and dance including works by composer Tansy Davies and Place Prize winner Nina Rajarani, and family events across the Square Mile and beyond. Other highlights this year include the English National Ballet performing
in St Paul’s Cathedral and a world première performance from tetraplegic trumpeter Clarence Adoo for whom a special piece has been written by Nigel Osbourne. In celebration of the festivals Golden Jubilee, 50 golden street pianos for members of the public to play will be placed around London Landmarks within the City for three weeks during the festival. To emphasize the theme of sustainability wildflowers will be replanted in 3 city churchyards – accompanied by performances of poetry and music – and there will be a chance to taste honey from the Festival’s rooftop beehives. Each event and performance acts as a new installment in the story of the City, taking the audience on an international journey that connects back to London’s heart. City of London Festival is delighted to continue its partnership with BNY Mellon, as the Festival’s principal sponsor for a third year. Full listings on website: www.colf.org

Yoko Ono 19th June - 9th September 2012 Serpentine Gallery, Kensington Gardens, W2 3XA
T
his Summer, the Serpentine Gallery will present a major exhibition of the work of celebrated artist Yoko Ono for the London 2012 Festival, which will include SMILE, a large-scale participatory project. The Serpentine’s timely exhibition will reflect upon the enormous impact that Yoko Ono has made on contemporary art, exploring her influential role in art, music, film and performance. Her first exhibition in a London public institution for more than a decade, Ono will present new and existing works, some of which have rarely been shown in the UK. These will include installations,
films and performances, as well as architectural alterations to the galleries. As a part of her exhibition, Ono will present SMILE, a large-scale project which will be exhibited at the Serpentine Gallery and online for the London 2012 Festival. Conceived as a way of connecting people across the world, the project invites people to upload and send an image of their smiles, to create a global anthology of portraits. Ono envisions that ‘all of the smiles... that are collected will be kept by the Serpentine Gallery as a record for the planet Earth. When people take part in the SMILE, they will receive their own smile to take home.’ Working as an artist, filmmaker, poet, musician, writer, performance artist and peace activist for over five decades, Yoko Ono has influenced generations of artists and received numerous prestigious awards. In her prolific career, she has embraced a wide range of media, defying traditional boundaries and creating new forms of artistic expression. Born in 1933 in Tokyo, she is a pioneer of conceptual art. Her work has been presented internationally in major exhibitions and performances.

t Leisure Plan’s showroom in Stansted Mountfitchet, you will find the greatest selection of contemporary outdoor furniture imaginable. The stunning display is a surprising contrast to the converted old chapel (1836) which houses the complete Leisure Plan organisation. Back in the early 80’s Leisure Plan’s founder and owner Chris McCormack set up his company with the express intention of bringing the very best of European outdoor furniture design to the UK. Since then Leisure Plan’s portfolio of high quality, distinctively designed collections have established the company at the very top of the market for outdoor living. Adding value & fun to your home A garden room can add value to your property and more enjoyment from outside space.
I
t has been an unseasonally warm March, and we are all hoping that summer is just around the corner and we can start looking forward to outside living. But if you are lucky enough to have a garden room or a gazebo you can enjoy garden living all year round. Not only that, but a garden room can add value to your home and increase your quality of life. Crown Pavilions manufacture a whole range of garden rooms which can feature outdoor kitchens or barbecues, sitting rooms with plasma screens, studies with storage and internet connection, screens or fold-back doors to protect you from the weather, mood lighting for evening entertainment, heating, hot tubs, home gyms. Crown Pavilions can create a wide range of buildings for a variety of requirements, all of which will enhance your use of outside space, whether it be leisurely breakfasts with the family early evening drinks with friends, lunches and dinners, or just a private, quiet sanctuary. One of the questions that often arises is whether planning permission is required. Luke explains, “A garden room should

be an extension of your home and you can put it wherever you want. In most cases our buildings would fall under permitted development. However in certain circumstances planning may be required. We always advise that you either contact your local planning officer, or why not let us do it for you. We provide a seamless hassle-free product and service from order to completion. “When we install a garden room we are especially mindful of the landscaping around it. Our sister company Crown Gardens, will look after every aspect of planting and creating a beautiful setting which fits in with your existing garden. The lighting and heating are also important, especially if you want to entertain in the evening. We take care of all that too. “ In an exciting development, for Chelsea Flower Show, Crown Pavilions is launching The Crown Duchess, a new garden room designed in partnership with the Duchess of Rutland. Working closely with the Duchess on every aspect of design and finish, Crown Pavilions has created a versatile, handcrafted garden room with elegant interiors that echo Belvoir Castle, the beautiful home of the Duchess of Rutland.

Ronald Phillips Antiques
onald Phillips, one of the world’s finest antique dealers specialising in English antique furniture, celebrates their 60th anniversary this year. Based on Bruton Street in the heart of Mayfair, the gallery has developed into one of the leading antique houses in the world. The owner Simon Phillips remarks: “Our ethos then and now has not changed. Every piece of furniture is carefully chosen for its quality, colour and rarity and when necessary sympathetically restored in our workshops.” History is a big part of the collection, and each item has a story behind it that is often fascinating- although they do not have provenance for every piece that they sell. Inside the gallery one can see the craftsmanship that went into making these pieces is quite extraordinary. This month Ronald Phillips releases its annual catalogue, a specialist book that reflects Ronald Phillips’ passion for and the extensive knowledge of antiques. Commenting on the creation of the catalogue Simon Phillips, said:
108 m ay 2 0 1 2
“We have been very fortunate to acquire outstanding pieces of furniture in the past and this year has been no exception.” Many of the items in the catalogue have not been on the open market for some time and some have come from distinguished collections like Samuel Messer, The Earl of Devon and most importantly The Royal Collection to name just a few. Notable features include, a George III mahogany serpentine Partners desk, a shape rarely executed and retaining its outstanding original handles. Also, a pair of gesso tables attributed to the celebrated workshop of James Moore which have survived in remarkable condition. Today reputedly the gallery holds the largest and most comprehensive collection of 18th century mirrors. A stunning example of the collection is the important George II giltwood mirror in the manner of Matthias Lock. This remarkable mirror survives in an incredible state of preservation, retaining the original oil gilding and astonishing original
plate. Its provenance is equally alluring having been in the same family since around 1750 including Prime Minster Sir William Gladstone’s home at Hawarden Castle. Their collection also comprises some of the finest Chinese reverse painted glasses made for the English market. “Mirrors are something that I’ve always particularly liked, and like paintings you can always find room for them. Michael Jackson once came in here and admired our mirrors. We’d love to be thinking of us when he wrote Man in the Mirror. One of the founding dealers of Masterpiece London, Simon Phillips is looking forward to an exceptional fair in June. “We’re confident that the inaugural success of Masterpiece over the last two years will be exceeded in 2012.” Masterpiece London will open its doors to the public between 28th June -4th July in the grounds of The Royal Hospital Chelsea, a perfect backdrop for a fair driven by a philosophy that incorporates the highest quality art from around the
world. An inter-disciplinary fusion of traditional and modern provide an opportunity for old and new to coexist with the finest antiques and decorative arts complementing contemporary design. Visitors will see classic cars alongside the latest models; the world’s greatest cognac and its oldest Champagne house; furniture by the prodigious makers jostling for attention with 21st century pieces; breath taking jewels by Faberge, Cartier and Sterlé; and paintings of museum quality and rarity. The fair will also feature world-class restaurants, including Mayfair’s notorious Harry’s Bar and Scotts providing an exceptional cultural, culinary and social experience for the discerning and distinguished clientele. ome working, for many, simply means enough space to house your laptop, but for photographer Darren and his young family, their needs were greater. “It seems strange now but until recently, I worked from a living room crowded with equipment, young children and toys” Darren remembers. “I needed more privacy, space and light and after two years of making do, things were just getting worse and worse.” The Salansons faced that well trodden move/ extend dilemma. “We looked at several houses but as our home is on such a popular, quiet street there was nothing in our price range that could quite match up to it.” Instead they began to investigate the cost of extending their already partly converted loft. “We were already using our loft as a bedroom but it was cramped and ill-suited to my requirements for work. We realised that by adding
112 m ay 2 0 1 2
WORKING FROM HOME? SPACE IN SHORT SUPPLY? ONE LOCAL FAMILY LOOKED TO (L&E) LOFTS AND EXTENSIONS TO CREATE THE PERFECT SOLUTION a dormer there would be enough space to combine my studio needs while retaining a tranquil bedroom space. The reality was that extending rather than moving was simply the best and most cost effective solution.” They invited several companies to quote for the work, but felt an immediate connection with (L&E) Lofts and Extensions. “I took to them straight away. It’s a relatively small job and while some builders were pretty unenthusiastic, L&E’s surveyor was great. He had such a positive attitude and was never disparaging about the amount of work involved. He offered us some great
advice, was competitively priced and after our initial meeting was instantaneous in his responses to our follow up queries” Darren comments. Confident that L&E were the right team for them, work
began. “We didn’t have much idea on what permissions we needed to obtain but both the surveyor and foreman guided us seamlessly through the whole process. They obtained the permitted development requirements and detailed the work involved in a stage by stage timeline.” The team began by building a rear dormer, and to keep disruption to a minimum sealed the loft room space above, accessing in the early stages only from the scaffold. With the Salansons at home throughout the build, decisions could be made swiftly “L&E’s foreman was fantastic. Nothing was too much trouble and he kept us updated on progress on a daily basis.” Once the structural changes were complete, attention turned to practicalities and decor. The previously cramped room now had much more space though the Salansons’ wish list also included a bespoke storage
solution. “L&E’s carpenter set to work creating a wall of cupboards to give us a much needed storage area. They are great quality and were surprisingly affordable too.” Thankfully the build went smoothly and after only three and a half weeks, ahead of schedule, the L&E team moved out. “We expected some delay or disruption but work was much quicker than we thought. The team worked like Trojans – they just kept on going!” Darren laughs. “They were great with the children and before leaving insisted on installing them an outside tap to fill their much loved watering cans at no extra charge.”
Now finished, Darren is delighted that L&E have fulfilled their brief to create a light, open plan area which works equally well as an office/studio and bedroom space. “It’s really changed the way I work.” Darren concludes “The view from the window creates an amazing backdrop. We can look out onto everyone but aren’t overlooked at all. The extra window gives me much needed light for my work and my wife equally loves it as a bedroom ….and the fact that I’m no longer under her feet downstairs during the day!” So would you recommend L&E? “Yes, I would highly recommend them!”
Mr and Mrs Salanson are so confident recommending L&E (Lofts and Extensions) that they are even happy to show you round their new home. espite the tough financial times the sales line for one small traditional company in London has continued to buzz, why? – Because of Google Street View. Google Street view is a remarkable application on the Internet where people can now walk down a street and take a look around from their PC or even mobile phone. Which means of course, that the appearance of our homes as viewed from the road, has never been more important.V “And that’s where we come in.” said managing director, Trevor Alexander. “Attractive steps can transform the first impressions someone has of
114 m ay 2 0 1 2
your house – especially in London where steps are such a prominent feature. We create beautiful steps and paving using only top quality York stone or Portland stone, the two best looking and most famous natural materials for walking on. What is more, these traditional materials have stood the test of time because they have good grip even when wet, are extremely hard wearing, but above all, they both look fantastic! When a potential client phones us now we can now simply invite them to take a walk on Google Street View and look at the steps in their neighbourhood. As we’ve installed hundreds of
steps in South Kensington and Chelsea the chances are - the ones they like - are ours!” First impressions do count, especially when you are trying to sell your home or impress your friends. We asked one of Trevor’s clients what they thought, “I hadn’t really appreciated what a difference to the look of the whole house the steps would make. It was only when I found the Natural Stone Steps Company website on Google, and saw the ‘before and after’ photographs that I realised. Visitors now comment on the nice appearance of the house, which we never received before – even though we’ve only changed the steps! I’m
glad I Googled. Thanks Trevor!” A set of stone steps are normally installed in one or two days but will last a lifetime and if they are visible from the road then they are visible by the whole world! It may just be worth going on Google Street view to take a look (http://www.google. co.uk/help/maps/streetview/), and if improvements are needed, ring Trevor at the Natural Stone Company! ood is the first choice for many when it comes to flooring. It has a timeless appeal, is easy to clean and is available in an abundant choice of styles, designs, colours and species. But with lots of different products of varying quality on the market, it pays to buy from an established, specialist supplier with a good reputation. Founded 21 years ago, The Natural Wood Floor Company is a family owned and run business which has grown to become one of the leading wood flooring manufacturers and suppliers in Europe. Run by three brothers, the company now employs over

450 staff at its warehouse in Wandsworth, London and their manufacturing centre in Europe. With over 20,000 square meters of wood in stock, covering 140 different types of flooring, The Natural Wood Floor Company offers flooring to suit all tastes, budgets and designs. The extensive range of flooring includes engineered, solid wood, parquet woodblock and pre-finished. The Natural Wood Floor Company also manufactures an impressive range of pre-oiled and pre-lacquered engineered oak wood flooring in the key colours for 2012; Silver White, Silver Grey, Pure White, White and Charcoal

Wash. The pale colours help to highlight the natural beauty of the wood, as the specialist finishing process emphasises the wood’s distinctive grain patterns. Antique floors are another popular option. The Natural Wood Floor Company manufactures two products to create this look. Solid wood Aged Oak Parquet Woodblocks are ‘aged’ using a specialist distressing technique, while the Engineered Oak Antique Pre-lacquered Boards are lightly brushed and then finished with a coloured lacquer to give the wood a rich patina. The Natural Wood Floor Company also manufactures a range of wooden worktops, solid wood mouldings, step kits and kitchen chopping boards. They also offer a selection of exterior decking. With ecological issues high on their agenda, The Natural Wood Floor Company follows the replant and recycle principle. The company believes that using wood from sustainable sources is essential for the replenishment and protection of forests for the future. All of their wood is selected from both farmed and managed natural forests, which have long-term replanting procedures in place to ensure that there is a healthy crop of wood for the future. Finding the best wooden floor for your home has just become a whole lot easier, thanks to the company’s new redesigned website. With a new clear, stylish design, the re-launched site offers everything from inspirational pictures to expert advice.

The thirst for all things French has led to many companies re-creating French beds, armoires and buffets. These pieces, which capture the essence of French style, are often not as well made as the originals and tend to devalue over the years. But not at A French Life they travel right across France sourcing stock for their successful shops. raeme Thirde is rapidly carving himself a reputation as a rising star in the world of garden design. He started his working life as an Army Officer and having served for nine years, during which he was deployed on several overseas tours of duty, he decided to hang up his uniform and steer his career in a different direction. Why Garden design? His Grandfather was a keen horticulturalist and Graeme has many fond childhood memories of time spent in his Grandfather’s garden looking for the hidden treasures of fresh peas, raspberries or strawberries. He has always been interested in plants, good

Graeme has many fond childhood memories of time spent in his Grandfather’s garden looking for the hidden treasures design and working outdoors, and it was while planning and developing his own garden that he became set upon the idea of combining these interests and training as a Garden Designer. After extensive research Graeme decided to apply to study at the London College of Garden Design under the expert tutelage of Andrew Wilson, Andrew Fisher Tomlin and Mark Gregory. Having been accepted on the course he fully immersed himself in
the world of garden design. Going back to study was harder than Graeme anticipated but his passion for horticulture was galvanised and he graduated with Merit. After an internship with Marcus Barnet he set up his own design practice and is now expanding his portfolio of works. He recently won a competition to design a garden at this year’s BBC Gardeners’ World Live Show, at the NEC in Birmingham which will
provide a fantastic opportunity to showcase his design skills to a wide audience. It is his first foray into the discipline of show gardens; and will act as good preparation for entering a show garden into the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Inspiration? Graeme draws inspiration for his designs from many different things. From sculpture and other works of art, to the natural landscape he tries to keep his designs relatively simple and uncluttered while ensuring that the plants are the focus. He says “The key for me is understanding the client and translating their thoughts into a design that not only gives them an aesthetically pleasing garden, but also a practical and useable outdoor space.” His designs start with the structural elements which act as a framework for the softer elements of the garden. The ratio of the different elements within the garden is also important, “Having the correct balance is key to creating a successful design”. To see Graeme’s garden at the BBC Gardeners’ World Live Show tickets are still available and the show runs from the 13th to 17th of June.

A day in the life of London’s Air Ambulance
T
he alarm goes off just before 5am on a typical flying day. It’s still dark outside and the April showers are in full flow. Dr Dominik Krzanicki, one of London’s Air Ambulance full time doctors is preparing for another day as part of the only roadside trauma team in the Capital. A quick breakfast is followed by a 9 mile cycle across the city to the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel. Dr. Krzanicki’s next hour is busy when the medical team prepare all of the lifesaving equipment including blood, anaesthetic drugs and surgical equipment to equip the helicopter and rapid response car for the next 24 hours. This single London’s Air Ambulance team is on call 24/7 for the 10 million people who live and work within the M25. The whole duty team (two firefighters, two pilots, a doctor and a paramedic) are joined by medical students and medical observers for the morning briefing, when the quiet is harshly interrupted by the klaxon - the team are about to be dispatched. 128 m ay 2 0 1 2
LONDON’S FLYING HEROES
Three minutes later the aircraft lifts off the helipad and, with special priority over all other air traffic, proceeds directly to the scene. A five minute flight sees the aircraft circling over the incident and the team can clearly see that a pedestrian has been it by a lorry. Two London Ambulance Service paramedics are already at the scene. Just two minutes later, having touched down in anearby road junction, with the doctor confirming: “Medic 1on-scene.” An all too common scenario greets them, the lady is critically injured;
An all to common scenario greets them, the pedestrian has been hit by a lorry
unconscious with chest injuries, a collapsed lung, a fractured pelvis andsignificant hand injuries. The team also suspect she is bleeding into her abdomen. They phone ahead to the emergency department at the Royal London Hospital anddeclare ‘Code Red’. - the patient is critical, and the hospital needs to be ready. At the scene, the patient is given an emergency anaesthetic, two units of blood and her collapsed lung is re inflated with a surgical procedure. The patient is loaded on to the helicopter and the team lift off from scene. Five minutes later the aircraft is back at the Royal London hospital and the patient is transferred to the care of the waiting trauma team. Within minutes of the helicopter landing, the patient is undergoing surgery in the operating theatre. By this time, the London’s Air Ambulance team are back on the 17th floor, ready for their next mission. They attended four more missions that day, including a child who was seriously injured. At 7pm the helicopter leaves the helipad for the final time that day and the night team take over in a rapid-response car. Busy
as it sounds, this is a fairly typical for London’s Air Ambulance. What is shocking is that this life-saving service is a charity which relies heavily on donations from the public and corporate sponsorship. Treating around 2000 seriously injured patients a year and able to reach anywhere within the M25 in just eleven minutes London’s Air Ambulance is an invaluable asset to the Capital. The service is widely regarded as the world-leading prehospital trauma service. The highly skilled team are able to deliver intensive care at the roadside, are uniquely placed as the only UK air ambulance to carry blood and have an unrivalled experience in treating the seriously injured. JOHN LEWIS OXFORD J STREET BEAUTY HALL gets a multi-million pound makeover for 2012
134 m ay 2 0 1 2
ohn Lewis Oxford Street launches revamped Beauty Hall in time for London 2012 John Lewis celebrated the relaunch of the Beauty Hall at its flagship department store in Oxford Street on 8th May, unveiling the results of a £7.8m spend ahead of London 2012. The Beauty Hall has been expanded by 40% to 19,000 sq ft to house 24 new beauty brands including Jo Malone, Topshop and Burberry; and will become one of the highest turnover beauty halls in the world. The unveiling of the Beauty Hall is the result of four months of work to the ground floor of John Lewis Oxford Street, which will culminate in the revamp of the menswear department in July - increasing in size by 2,000 sq ft to 17,000sq ft with a sleek and modern design. Brands and celebrities attended the event including Alice Temperley, Charlotte Tilbury, Lisa Butcher, Laura Bailey, Lisa Snowdon, Grace Woodward and Tara Palmer-Tomkinson. Designed by gpstudio, the new Beauty Hall concept is based on the idea of a Town Square, where all the premium cosmetics brands including Chanel, Dior, Crème de la Mer and Jo
Malone are positioned like ‘houses’ around a central area focused on fragrance and niche assortments such as haircare, skincare, and nails. The revamped ground floor Beauty Hall will make John Lewis Oxford Street a major national and international beauty destination and put the department store firmly on the map with visitors who come to London this summer. Simon Fowler, managing director, John Lewis Oxford Street said: “The multimillion pound facelift of the Beauty Hall in John Lewis Oxford Street marks the first step in our preparations for the London 2012 Games and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee the month before. “The investment underscores our commitment to making John Lewis Oxford Street the must-visit destination
the new ‘Town Square for Beauty’ will also include a Jo Malone shop for those coming to the capital this summer.” Famous for its rich heritage and royal warrant status, John Lewis Oxford Street is home to some of the best British beauty brands, including Liz Earle, Miller Harris and Molton Brown as well as leading international brands and exclusive ranges. Amanda Scott, head of buying for beauty, John Lewis said: “The launch of our revamped Oxford Street Beauty Hall is a key part of our vision for beauty which is a major growth category for John Lewis. The facelift allows us to express ourselves as an authority on beauty and skincare and engage our customers in a more emotional and inspiring experience.”

DR. ARIEL HAUS london’s Most talked about brazilian doctor
D
r Ariel Haus is a leader in the use of Carboxytherapy both in London and Rio de Janeiro at his clinics. His most sought after treatment request has been for the treatment of dark under-eye circles also known as ‘bags’ under the eyes and Dr Haus sees this as the ideal treatment for an overworked city like London where looking good counts. A very minimally-invasive treatment which is safe and fast and can be done in around 5 minutes, the treatment of dark undereye circles will showcase a profound improvement in the skin texture and contour as the majority of dark under-eye circles are caused by poor circulation beneath the lower eyelids. Rejuvenating this area with Carboxytherapy is an excellent way to bid farewell to those undesired dark circles/bags. Dr Ariel Haus injects a small amount of carbon dioxide gas just beneath the skin of the lower eyelid; this is virtually painless and risk-free. Around 2-4 treatments are needed and in some cases 6 all spaced one week apart. The results following the injections are that circulation increases and dark under-eye circles improve and most look to have completely disappeared. Carboxytherapy dates back to the 1930s and by using

this additional carbon dioxide the body recovers from poor blood flow and in turn the body reacts by increasing the oxygen flow to the target area (in this case under-eye circles). Mad lillies hair of hampstead
34 Heath Street, Hampstead, NW3 6TE
0207 435 3869 www.madlillies.co.uk
“This could be theeee best salon in London” was how one client recently reviewed Mad Lillies of Hampstead. She continued “it is very friendly but with an air of poshness to it” Mad Lillies has always been welcoming and friendly and that’s part of its charm, but it is also sophisticated and professional, only employing the best and most experienced international stylists and technicians. It is and has been the busiest and most popular
hair salon in the area for over fifteen years and for good reason. Mad Lillies takes care to never take itself too seriously and is never intimidating. The bottom line is that you always get excellent personal service and a great haircut. The many reviews speak for themselves ..... Clients talk about “zero egos” and although all the stylists seem pretty cool there is apparently no “too cool for schoolness like you find in other salons”. The complimentary head massages and treatments are legendary and clients seem to have really good relationships with their stylists. The price list is “respectable” according to one long standing client who is happy to” travel 50 mins accross town for the pleasure”. The Mad Lillies experience combines luxury and pampering with buzzy shabbychic like no other salon can, growing its reputation through, as always that traditional mark of a great place personal recommendation.

Smile Makeover: before & after
Orthodontics for Adults
Invisalign is among the foremost orthodontic treatments available today, able to produce incredible results without anyone being able to notice you are wearing braces. Invisalign uses clear plastic aligners to gradually guide the teeth into position. It provides an innovative solution for people who want straighter teeth but become worried about wearing bulky, unsightly appearance of normal braces. The Invisalign system creates straight, attractive smiles without the need for any painful metal brackets and wires. Unlike conventional orthodontic treatments Invisalign does not use braces – instead the patient wears a series of clear plastic aligners, which are designed to be invisible and provide maximum comfort and flexibility for the individual. The aligners can be removed to eat, drink and clean your teeth. Teeth whitening
Tooth whitening treatments have seen a rise in popularity over the last decade and it comes as no surprise to the team at Kings Road Dental Clinic. This remarkable treatment can give both your smile and confidence a boost through affordable and effective treatment. Kings Road Dental Clinic offers the most effective and innovative whitening treatments in the current market, including: Zoom! Enlighten
in a military hospital for three years, was just the beginning of what has been a comprehensive and advancing career. Following this high-profile entry into the world of dentistry, Ilias continued his education at The Royal University of Aarhus, Denmark - one of the leading dental universities in the world in adult orthodontics. This was a pivotal point in his development as he gained expertise in the restoration of the most complex and challenging orthodontic cases. Still feeling that he could refine his skills even further, Ilias reached the level of orthodontic specialist in Sweden. He underwent his specialist registrar training in the University of Gothenurg, Sahlgrenska Academy and qualified for his speciality studies and his MSc degree with distinction. Using the latest and most comfortable invisible systems in the world, Ilias can transform even the most difficult cases and has achieved international recognition for his talents.
Behind the London Smile Smile Makeover
We provide state-of-the-art treatments in smile makeovers
The teeth’s natural whiteness can become faded over time and this can make your smile look dull and unhealthy. Drinking tea, coffee and smoking are another factor that can result in teeth becoming discoloured. Whitening treatments work quickly and give the teeth a healthy glow, which will make you look and feel great. Our patient had a smile makeover for her wedding day. We carried out Invisalign to first straighten her teeth, followed by Enlighten Teeth whitening, conservative aesthetic bonding and cosmetic recontouring. This type of conservative makeover, which enhances her natural beauty with almost no loss of tooth structure at all, is affectionately termed a ‘London’ smile makeover –Alignment, Bleaching, Bonding, Contouring (ABBC). She was delighted with the results. It’s time to treat yourself contact us regarding our range of treatments and latest offers. designed to enhance the detox process. With summer on the horizon and thoughts turning to beaches and pools a detox may be in order. But with busy city lives it can be difficult to focus on a detox, which is why the Dolphin Square Spa in central London has unveiled unique new packages with the Lemon Detox. The overall objective is to eliminate wastes and toxins while simultaneously shedding unwanted pounds in a manageable environment. For those on the go, the first few days of any detox may prove the most challenging
dolphin sQuare spa, london unVeils uniQue ciTy day spa deTox packaGes & oVerniGhT ciTy spa deTox packaGes during which time the body starts to eliminate toxins. The lack of food is substituted by detoxers enjoying either 2 or 3 spa treatments during usual meal times combined with the Lemon Detox formula. For those opting to detox whilst maintaining day-to-day activity the Day Spa packages are ideal. Detoxers start the day (breakfast) at the Dolphin Square Spa by enjoying their first Lemon Detox formula tasting and speaking with a therapist. This is then followed by a Rhassoul. Detoxers then return for what would be lunch and enjoy a bespoke massage whilst enjoying an additional Lemon Detox formula drink. To end the day (dinner), guests return for a final treatment of a prescriptive facial. Whilst it may not be possible to
get away at lunchtime, two treatments can be enjoyed instead of all three whilst the Lemon Detox formula can be consumed throughout the day as and when needed. The above package can also be spread throughout the working week specifically over three days as detoxers commence a five day or longer detox. This package is priced £114.00 per person with the Rhassoul and Massage or Facial
or £183.00 per person for all three treatments and includes a litre tin of the Lemon Detox and a book on the detox. For detoxers wishing to remain in the city but stay within close proximity to the spa, a selection of luxury serviced apartments located inside Dolphin Square adjoined to the spa are available. Here detoxers can enjoy luxury accommodation whilst embarking on a 1 night or 2 night package, with spa treatments on offer each day. The benefits of the Lemon Detox are extensive and include a Cleansed body and mind and Weight loss whilst the detox also offers users an improved complexion along with Thicker & shinier hair. The Dolphin Spa is inspired by the essence of Morocco, the spa is a fusion of ancient therapies and contemporary spa philosophies centred around four core principles; cleansing & purifying, relaxation & balance, wellness & integrated health, prescriptive maintenance & repair. Visitors to the spa can enjoy a Hammam Ritual, Rhassoul Ritual and an extensive selection of other treatments. Whether you’re working or looking to take a break, there really is no excuse to not detox in the city and get ready for summer. www.dolphinsquare.co.uk/spa www.lemondetox.com Dolphin Square, Chichester Street, London, SW1V 3LX, 020 7798 6767
