op legend Sir Paul McCartney will headline a spectacular musical tribute to the Queen to mark her Diamond Jubilee. The former Beatle will be among a concert line-up that will feature artists from across the 60 years of the monarch’s reign playing in front of Buckingham Palace in June. Securing McCartney for the event’s bill is a major coup for singer Gary Barlow, who is helping to organise the event. Other performers will include Sir Elton John, Sir Tom Jones, Dame Shirley Bassey, Madness, Annie Lennox and Sir Cliff Richard, Jessie J, boy band JLS and singer songwriter Ed Sheeran. The Take That star said: “The Diamond Jubilee concert will celebrate the 60 years of the Queen’s reign with an amazing line-up of world class artists coming together to play at one of the biggest and most exciting live music shows in recent years. With Buckingham Palace as a backdrop, it’s going to be a fantastic event which transcends multiple

14 F E B r U A R Y 2 0 1 2

decades of music. It’ll be a great, unique, experience for the thousands attending, watching on TV and listening on Radio. I can’t wait.” The concert will take place in front of the palace, with the stage around the Victoria Monument and raised seating for up to 20,000 people - many of the rest from charities covering the flowerbeds around the roundabout. The organisers hope that up to another 500,000 people may throng St James’s and Green Parks and the Mall in the remote chance of catching a glimpse of the show or to watch on giant screens. Those who opt to stay at home can see it live on BBC1 or listen on Radio 2. Gary Barlow said the Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry had both requested artists to perform in front of an audience of more than 10,000 that will include the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and other members of the Royal Family.” Barlow would not confirm if he or Take That would play on the night but said almost two-thirds of the acts had been

confirmed and he hoped to go beyond Commonwealth artists and have American stars taking part. The musician said he wanted other forms of entertainment such as ballet or performances from the West End to be represented and highlighted how classical acts had already been booked - English tenor Alfie Boe and virtuoso Chinese pianist Lang Lang. A ballot is now open for British residents to apply for 10,000 free tickets for the show. Each successful applicant will be allowed to nominate a guest aged 13 or over, and the ballot is open until 2nd March. Ticket applicants can apply online at bbc.co.uk/ diamondjubilee or on a postcard to The Royal Diamond Jubilee Concert 2012, PO Box 798, Manchester, M60 1WU, between now and 2nd March. Applicants must be over 18 and living at a British (or British forces) postal address, and can apply only once. Those who are successful will be notified by the end of March and tickets will be sent out at the end of May.

he famous London store has opened the Selfridges Library, the heart of Words Words Words - a phrase famously coined by Shakespeare for his Hamlet. The 15,000-book library, set up within the Ultralounge, has been curated by Penguin, Taschen, Faber and Thames and Hudson exclusively for the project. The Selfridges Library’s mission is to offer visitors a special edit of the most inspirational books from each of the four publishers’ historic and contemporary stocks, from fairy tales to biographies and, via Taschen, some of the most breath-taking photography-led books. Amid the comfortable seating, listening posts for audio books and iPads are available for visitors to reach another few more thousands of tomes. A special section of the Selfridges Library will reveal the books which have had the biggest impact on some well-loved celebrities - from Miranda Hart, Poloma Faith and Sophie Dahl, to Felicity Kendal, Olivia Palermo and Thandie Newton - books they would take with them on a desert island or rescue from a fire, all giving some unexpected clues about their inner-self.

The weekly grammar lessons taught by Etonian, Oxford graduate and teacher extraordinaire Nevile Gwynne, whose reputation for exacting standards and oldfashioned but proven methods precedes him, are expected to be most popular - and feared! The Selfridges Library will also mark milestones such as the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens, National Story Telling Week and World Book Day - all taking place

during Words Words Words. One more special contributor is another cult brand: It’s Nice That. The Shoreditch-based creative publisher with a passion for design has created four windows for Selfridges the store’s biggest will showcase a mind-boggling installation called Word-A-Coaster, produced in collaboration with interactive designer Stewdio, mixing the principles of the old-fashioned fairground rollercoaster and fortune telling to offer customers a humour-filled way to pick at random one of 30,000 possible predictions for 2012, especially written by It’s Nice That based on their edit of the most interesting, inspiring or funniest adjectives in the Oxford English dictionary. The entirely mechanised installation is operated at the touch of a button and free of charge. Artist Ben Long, and designers Chrissie MacDonald and Gilles Miller are creating another three installations in three nearby windows under the curatorial supervision of It’s Nice That - presenting the word WORDS in three different and creative ways. Having myself lost two family members to cancer this year, and Maxine having lost a close friend, we both saw the ball as a fantastic opportunity to support Macmillan’s excellent work.’ Macmillan’s SW London fund-raising manager Kate Macauley said: “This is set to be an amazing event. I’m really excited to be getting involved. Martin has done such an amazing job at organising this event in previous years that I have no doubt it will be a fantastic success. The fact that they have chosen to support Macmillan this year is great and we really appreciate it.’

eading figures from the world of polo are expected to attend a black tie charity Gala Dinner which will be held at the prestigious British Antique Dealers’ Association (BADA) Fair on Thursday 22nd March 2012, in the Cellini Restaurant hosted by HITS, Head Injury Through Sport. HITS has recently been founded by Sandra Cronan, Greta Morrison and Francesca Schwarzenbach to help those who have suffered head injuries through sport and to further the work of The National Brain Appeal, a charity dedicated to raising much needed funds for The National Hospital of Neurology and Neurosurgery, London. This will be a glamorous event which will reinforce the position of the Fair in the capital’s social and cultural calendar.

26 F E B r U A r Y 2 0 1 2

Sandra met Greta’s husband Bryan Morrison and Francesca’s husband Urs Schwarzenbach over 25 years ago whilst learning to play polo at the Royal Berkshire Polo Club. Nine years ago Sandra had an extremely serious accident playing a tournament where she received fantastic care from Dr Paul Jarman at The National Hospital of Neurology and Neurosurgery, London who said she was lucky to survive. Five years ago Urs Schwarzenbach also

had a serious accident and Bryan Morrison had a similar but more severe accident and subsequently died two years later. The charity is therefore something that is very personal to Sandra, Greta and Francesca who having received and observed such remarkable treatment decided to set-up HITS to help others with similar injuries. Dr Paul Jarman, one of the most eminent neurologists in the country who currently works in

London at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, The Wellington Hospital and University College Hospital, treated both Sandra and Bryan. Two hundred and fifty guests, including well-known figures from the sporting world, will be invited from 6pm to look around the Fair whilst enjoying a glass of champagne. At 8pm a threecourse dinner with fine wines will be served in the Cellini restaurant within the Fair. A guest of honour will be the American actress Stefanie Powers, a keen polo player who was among the first foreign members of the Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club and in 2005 competed in the Joules United Kingdom National Women’s Championships. One in six people will suffer brain trauma during their lifetime either from birth, through illness or from an accident. Research shows that recovery and outcomes are vastly improved by early treatment or diagnosis. The sum HITS raises at the Gala will go towards an appeal for £1.35 million to aid the funding of a Neuro Imaging Analysis Centre at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, part of UCL Hospitals NHS Trust. The new centre will dramatically reduce waiting times for analysis and treatment leading to more positive clinical outcomes. Dr Paul Jarman will speak on behalf of HITS. Tickets for the dinner are available for £200 per person. CoURSE 2012 EaSTER 2012 The Green Feathers shooting course was created in 1995 and has introduced over 1275 ladies with little or no experience to the pleasures of shotgun shooting. This year’s course again takes place at the Holland & Holland Shooting Grounds, situated at northwood in unspoilt countryside, just 40 minutes drive from london's West End. The course consists of three one-hour lessons with one of the renowned Holland & Holland instructors or three two-hour lessons if shared with a fellow participant. lessons are by appointment Monday to Friday (and some Saturdays) from 1st February to 25th April 2012, concluding on 26th April with a morning’s fun shooting competition followed by lunch and the opportunity to take part in a simulated pheasant drive and rifle shooting.

The future of sporting shooting, as we know it will ultimately rest in the young shots of today. It is the responsibility on all organisations such as ours to ensure the safety and skills of shooting, either in the field or on clay type targets, are passed on to future generations. For many years now, Holland & Holland have been providing youngsters with the opportunity to enjoy shooting and learn how to handle a gun safely, all the while developing a keen sense of responsibility.

The course is designed to be a learning experience as well as good fun, often resulting in lasting friendships with the other ladies.

as well as tuition, which is available throughout the year, we hold Young Shots days during the Easter, Summer and Christmas holidays for young guns (aged 9 -16). These are designed not only for those younger shots who may already have some, if limited experience, but also for those who have had no previous shooting experience at all. The aim is to have an educational and fun day with a strong emphasis on safety.

and the cost? Just £280 to include three lessons, cartridges, clays, gun hire and the final competition day with lunch. It really is exceptional value, so why not come and join us. We are sure you will enjoy the experience.

We are holding a Young Shots day on Tuesday 3rd April at our shooting school in northwood. Participants are welcome to bring their own guns but 12G, 20G, 28G & 410G will be available. and the cost? Just £115.

THE GAUCHO INTERNATIONAL POLO

O

n 21st March 2012 Gaucho will host The Gaucho International Polo at London’s O2 arena, uniting high-octane polo interspersed with live world famous music to produce a unique event never seen before in Britain. Following the triumphant inaugural year in 2011, Gaucho International Polo has now evolved into the ultimate celebration of Argentina’s sporting and cultural heritage at the O2 arena. The 2012 event will consist of two international arena polo matches merged with exclusive performances from Grammy award winning band, Bajofondo. Bajofondo, who have put ‘electrotango’ firmly on the world music map will open and play throughout the tournament, creating a thrilling blend of polo and performances. The matches will see Scotland taking on Ireland and culminate in the titanic clash between IG Index’s England and Argentina, pitting Britain’s finest player, Jamie Morrison 30 F E B r U A r Y 2 0 1 2

against the Royals’ favourite star, Nacho Figueras. The Gaucho International Polo will be a true Argentine festival, with tastings from some of the country’s finest wine producers, brought to the event by leading authority, Wines of Argentina. There will also be a fun and charitable twist to the event in the form of “The White Jeans Party’. What to wear to polo matches has often been hotly debated amongst the style conscious, but white jeans are winning in the fashion stakes with enthusiasts such as Prince Harry donning them at matches around the world. In keeping with this, every guest who arrives at the event wearing a pair, a pound will be donated to the BFF (British Forces Foundation). Arena polo is an emerging trend in the polo world and takes place on a smaller pitch with only three players per team rather than the usual four, creating a fast-paced and spectator friendly game. With simpler rules and tickets starting at just £20, it is an accessible way of introducing

Londoners to Argentina’s most celebrated sporting tradition. Combining the best in Argentine food and wine with the sophisticated glamour of Buenos Aires, Gaucho is now not only the ultimate dining destination but an established ambassador for Argentine culture and sport. Gaucho’s UK Operations Director, Martin Williams sums it: “Gaucho are delighted to be working with the HPA to create an annual International Polo match at the O2- I hope that it will grow to rival the success of the former ‘HPA Cartier International Polo’. This year we have created what promises to be an amazing Gaucho Polo Party: The Argentine wine tasting lounge and Bajofondo concert are included in the event and all tickets, while the ‘White Jeans’ charity theme and after-parties will keep the event casual and a lot of fun.” 21st March 2012, Doors open 5.30pm Polo matches start 7.15pm with live performances from Bajofondo throughout Afterparty starts 9.45pm Tickets from £20, through Ticketmaster W: www.gauchopolo.com F: www.facebook.com/Gauchointernationalpolo

ampstead and St John’s Wood owe much of their identity to their creative residents - Constable, George Eliot, Ford Madox Brown or Charles Saatchi to name but a few. Sadly, most of the artists’ studios have now been converted into ordinary rooms, and galleries are struggling to survive, prompting the question: is north-west London still an artistic power house? This exhibition shows that this part of London deserves to keep its historic label of ‘creative quarter’. Seven established artists have joined forces to prove the point. They are print-maker Pat Schaverien, architectural draughtsman Charlotte Halliday, botanical 36 F E B r U A r Y 2 0 1 2

artist Shirley Gumpel, painters Joan Hodes and Suzanne Perlman, woodworker Geoffrey Gubbay, and photographer Catherine Ames. The range and vitality of their work will demonstrate that the strong artistic tradition in Hampstead and St John’s

Wood is alive and kicking. The work falls within two categories - artists who use their immediate surroundings as their main source of inspiration - e.g. Charlotte Halliday in St John’s Wood; and artists who move out of their home ground to return with bounty - e.g. Joan Hodes, haunted by the landscape of Suffolk. Shirley Gumpel on the other hand, will track down her plant specimens at Kew and the Chelsea Physic Garden but also, more prosaically, in her own Hampstead garden or those of her friends. Geoffrey Gubbay was in the right place at the right time: his exquisite wood platters made with the trunk of a dying monkey-puzzle tree in Finchley, are quite extraordinary. Art is not dead in and around St John’s Wood and Hampstead. Artists

continue to haunt northwest London, for inspiration and/or for beautiful living. tHE QuEEN’S tERRACE CAFÉ in St John’s Wood was

set up by Mireille Galinou in April last year. This cultural café ‘cares about heritage and creativity in its neighbourhood’ while serving attractive food and of course ... coffee! As Mireille Galinou wrote the new detailed history of St John’s Wood - Cottages and Villas, published in 2010 by Yale University Press - she is well placed to fulfill the mission of this new breed of café on the London scene. This is the fifth exhibition organised by the Queen’s Terrace Café which opened with an exhibition of paintings by Mark Cazalet. It was followed by the extraordinary installation Café Jiro by the painter Jiro Osuga, the popular photographic project Secret Gardens of St John’s Wood and more recently The Art of Joy - the drawings of Joy Fleischmann.

ondon Fashion Week (LFW) is one of the highest profile fashion events in the world and one of the ‘big four’ international catwalk influencers. The event is organised by the British Fashion Council and funded by a number of sponsors (including principal sponsor Vodafone). It is a world of celebrities and famous people, beautiful and expensive clothes and general fashion glitz. London Fashion Week puts London and British fashion firmly on the global stage; it is estimated that orders of over £100m are placed during LFW each season. Over 5,000 visitors attend: buyers, TV & radio crews, journalists and photographers. There are 60 catwalk shows on the official schedule as well as a further 45 shows off-schedule. There are also more than 30 on-schedule presentations and salon shows. LFW visitors have access to many more designers through presentations, multi-brand and individual showrooms . In February 2010 the British Fashion Council launched the digital schedule as a part of London Fashion Week. The digital schedule is the first official Fashion Week schedule of its kind, bringing together live streamed shows and a selection of fashion films. The vibrant and internationally renowned London Fashion Week is always exciting and inspirational, and this month’s event will in no doubt prove to be just that once again, all housed under one roof in the neoclassical surrounds of Somerset House. The BFC co-ordinate an events schedule to help visitors experience London the city as well as the showcase of British fashion design talents at LFW, presenting another unrivalled opportunity for both established designers and newcomers to present their Autumn/Winter 2012 collections. A constantly buzzing key event for those who haven’t got the patience to wait until the latest fashion designs and stylish fashion trends make it into the fashion magazines. British Fashion Council have announced the provisional schedule of designers who will be showcasing their Autumn/

Does he or she show an interest in your child? • Pastoral care: Do the arrangements for looking after your child’s health and welfare satisfy you? • Discipline: Is discipline stricter or more relaxed than you would expect? • Curriculum: Is it broad and balanced? Will your child have an adequate range of options? • Extra activities: Does the school offer an extra-curricular activities programme that will stimulate your child’s interest?

• Exam results: Although academic success is important, don’t be tempted to go just for schools high in the “league tables”. education isn’t a one-size-fits-all affair and thankfully independent schools come in all shapes and sizes. The independent sector gives parents the opportunity to choose a school that is right for their child. Whether it is the breadth and flexibility of the curriculum that appeals or perhaps the extra curricular activities, you can be assured that your child will receive a well rounded education helping them to achieve their full potential.

Fairley House, described in the Sunday Times as ‘The Gold Standard’ is London’s leading day school for children with specific learning difficulties. We offer an education almost unique in that Educational Psychologists, with Speech, Language and Occupational Therapists are integrated into the school curriculum. We enjoy a central London location with excellent facilities such as a Science laboratory, art room and outdoor play space. Fairley House addresses the difficulties of children between 5 and 14 with dyslexia and dyspraxia. Children’s learning styles have often not been catered for in their previous school, leading to failure and loss of confidence, but Fairley House offers them a ‘level playing field’ where everyone has similar difficulties. Children receive a rich, stimulating educational experience integrated with therapy and specialist teaching. Teaching is multi-sensory and children learn Science, Spelling, Geography and History through interesting, hands-on activities. There is a staff: pupil ratio of 1: 3.5. The

4 SEPTEMBER2011

fairley house school average stay is two to three years after which children return to mainstream schooling with a new ‘can do’ attitude. Our teaching is different. Children with specific learning difficulties benefit from learning in a multi-sensory way. The negative side of dyslexia is so often emphasised but what of the strengths? We bring out pupils’

creativity and the wonderful visual sense that many dyslexics possess if properly nurtured. Our exciting displays of art work and design technology projects are a feature of the school. A full range of sport is available at Fairley House School, including touch rugby, football, netball, hockey and cricket. We use Battersea Park as well as the Queen Mother’s sports hall and swimming pool. We play fixtures against other schools and our after school clubs offer a wide range of activities. At Fairley House our intention is to provide your son or daughter with an educational experience which rivals that of any mainstream independent school. We aim to develop children’s confidence and self-esteem, enabling their talent and enthusiasm to grow and shine. We emphasise the development of the whole child, helping him or her to gain confidence and self-esteem through an encouraging and nurturing ethos. The children have opportunities to develop sound academic and social skills and to become independent. At Fairley House, everyone succeeds.

For many families, choosing which combination of GCSE subjects for their son or daughter to study can be a daunting experience. Many listen to advice from teachers, talk to other parents and desperately try to apply their own life experience to the decision. Others adopt a more laissez-faire attitude, delegating the choice almost entirely to the person who has to sit the exams. For pupils, it can often be a stressful and confusing time – even before the anxiety of deciding between German and Art is factored into the equation.

subject – although it can sometimes be difficult for teenagers to separate this from the personality of their current teacher, which will inevitably change. For many, choices are motivated by thoughts of undergraduate degree courses and the world of work. It is certainly worth looking at the qualifications needed for certain courses and careers (Medicine, for example, requires Maths and Chemistry, and languages will invariably require students to have studied up to and beyond GCSE), although a surprising number of courses encourage a flexible and varied menu at GCSE.

All students are taught English, Maths and at least one Science up to GCSE. Many schools also add a language to this list of compulsory subjects, and there are other constraints dictated by staff and timetable concerns. It is probably better to avoid pressuring your son or daughter into selections which they do not personally feel suited to. Invariably this can lead to resentment and stress due to the increased pressures and Leading schools will be able to offer a broad range of subjects which provide a varied and stimulating learning experience for teenagers. At Merchant Taylors’, intellectual demands. Higher grades and an ongoing enthusiasm for the subject will leave individuals better placed in the long run. Northwood, pupils are stretched and challenged by the more demanding IGCSE qualification in the core subjects, (mathematics, English and the separate GCSEs can be something of a grind at times – there are seemingly endless sciences) and facilities are superb for budding artists or students of Design assessment and aspects of the syllabus which are quite prescriptive. Ideally Technology. Sciences are taught as three separate awards for the most able and these aspects will be offset by the breadth and balance of the subjects chosen: a healthy mixture of lessons –challenging different skills - characterise each day. a healthy mix of Arts, Sciences and Humanities is important. Alongside So what factors should you consider? Habs is Exceptional! Following a detailed assessment by the ISI (Independent Schools Inspectorate), Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School has recently been judged to be excellent in virtually every aspect of its relationship with its pupils and its community. The school knew that it offered an outstanding educational environment. After all, it has achieved 40% or more A* grades at A level in each of the years that this new distinction has been awarded. However, it was exciting to read the ISI’s conclusion that the school provided an ‘outstanding educational experience’ which allowed its pupils to perform to ‘the highest level of their ability’. Particular attention was drawn to the high quality of the teaching that enabled such spectacular results.

‘I always knew that I and my team of outstanding staff were focused on building a first-rate educational environment,’ noted Headmaster Peter B Hamilton, ‘yet even I would not have dared to expect such an outstanding ISI report. I pay tribute,’ he continued, ‘to the support and direction provided by our entire community of pupils, staff, parents and old boys. Working together,’ he concluded, ‘we have built a school whose pupils go on to lead happy, purposeful, and successful lives. What better start can a school provide to any child?’

More importantly, perhaps, was the praise which the ISI focused on the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of Habs boys. The high standard of pastoral care provided at Habs was particularly noted, which the inspectors claimed played a powerful role in creating what they described as a ‘friendly and supportive school community.’ Furthermore, added the ISI conclusions, this sense of community extended to the parents, judging by the responses received to the parental questionnaire which the ISI undertook.

How to reinvigorate your home – without Byhaving to move! Living In Space

A

t Living In Space we often see clients whose properties simply aren’t working for them anymore; but before allowing them to go through the upheaval and stress of moving house, we like to look at the alternatives and show our clients how they can transform their current home to work for them instead. If you are growing out of your current home, moving is not necessarily the only solution. Storage space and extra bathrooms can be carved out of almost any niche, adding a new dimension to your property (and adding to its value at the same time!) Digging down to create a basement extension is a fantastic way to achieve more space, and with clever design and plenty of glass it needn’t be the dark underground space that some might imagine. Similarly, extending outwards or upwards is often an option and will give you plenty more space to play with. Built in storage will change your life! You will be amazed at what nooks and crannies can be utilised as storage with a bit of ingenuity and a great joiner. Our in-house joiners have tackled such projects as creating a dressing room in the eaves of a loft bedroom and building drawers in the risers of staircases, and we are confident that with us to guide them our clients can really make the most of their storage space. Crucially, getting belongings into built in storage will free up more space in the rest of the house – why waste space, even in a large property, that could be freed up with intelligent storage solutions? Take a look at the clever guest shower room that we installed under the stairs in a tall narrow Primrose Hill home; it completely transformed how the family used their space and gave guests a completely private bathroom rather than having to share any of the family bathrooms. This study space within a cupboard that we created in another local canal-side property made a fantastic desk for the teenage daughter of the family. When not in use the whole work area can be closed away completely, out of sight out of mind! It’s very easy to update a tired bathroom with a new scheme and fittings. Create a five star hotel atmosphere with a walk in shower and huge rainfall shower heads, dramatic feature tiles and beautiful lighting. For an up to the minute look, go for whites and greys, or for drama look at blacks and bronzes. Install stunning natural marbles and huge tropical plants for an art deco feel – a look that is 74 F E B r U A R Y 2 0 1 2

very big at the moment in both fashion and interiors. Lighting has the power to completely change the feel and look of a space, and we often see badly lit rooms that can be transformed with extra ceiling downlights, decorative pendants or wall lights and mood lighting. We often install LED lighting strips concealed in ceiling bulkheads or joinery, and the soft lighting that they create can be used to wash up walls and light up those dark corners. If you have sufficient task lighting but your space could do with something more subtle for evenings or entertaining, consider adding decorative pendants, wall lights or lamps to soften the room and add a new layer to your lighting scheme. We installed these stunning wall lights into a high spec family home in South Kensington; these coloured pendants add a new dimension to the kitchen lighting in this bijou Hampstead apartment. Soft furnishings are an easy way to update a tired interior. Even just updating the cushions in a living room can breathe new life into the room, but you can go the whole hog and redesign the entire soft furnishing scheme – some of our clients do so every few years! If you have antique pieces or simply items that you are very attached to, consider reupholstering in a fabulous new fabric and it will seem like new. This is also commendably environmentally friendly – too many furniture pieces end up in landfill which we think is criminal! If you are sick of your heavy curtains and long for something more streamlined, change them for stylish shutters in a colour and finish of your choice. Shutters have been very popular recently and we have installed them on every style and size of window – they are extremely versatile and can be charming or very grand, depending on the installation. Living In Space carried out the full refurbishment of this period property in Primrose Hill, installing shutters on the huge window in the master bathroom. The installation changed the dynamic of the whole room, giving it height and making the window into a really stunning feature while retaining total privacy for the clients. Here at Living In Space our hugely talented team will have stacks of ideas for YOUR home... if you need to create more space, are considering a refurb or are simply tired of your decor and need a change, call us or drop in for a free consultation! Vincent Cullane, founder and creative director of Increation

I

t is not difficult in today’s market to refurbish our home. At the click of a button, we can order flatpack furniture to arrive at our door, check out the latest styles and have someone fit it for us. If you wish to have a room designed you can hire an interior designer, pick products out that you like and have them arranged around the room how you see fit. But, how can you achieve a living space that is not only designed with you in mind, but is entirely hand built and custom to your own tastes and requirements? A living area that is not only practical, but also unique. A living space, where every detail has been designed and built with you in mind. Whether it be a kitchen, bathroom, or complete home, increation have been leading the way in luxury interiors. We speak to Vincent Cullane, founder and creative director of increation

76 F E B r U A r Y 2 0 1 2

to find out more about the history and methods of his work. Increation have created a brand and a business model, which stands individually proud in a market, which many would say is over saturated with mass-manufactured furniture and design. Increation remain to be, to this day one of only a few interior companies who can completely refurbish your living space, with bespoke hand made furniture and unrivalled attention to detail and function. We were intrigued to find out a little more about how increation do it. Even before we met the man himself, clues to the company’s success can be observed on the walk to the increation workshop and office, based on Pixley Street, London. On arrival, we are led through the workshop, based on the ground floor of their large building. Half a dozen cabinet makers can be seen in what could

house garden

be described as ‘the engine room’, articulately planning, cutting, sanding and preparing the various items of furniture. Around the room, beautifully unique cupboards, worktops and units are coming to life, at the hands of enthusiastic and passionate individuals. The items have a character and a practicality to which I could only imagine bespoke furniture to have. The craftsmen have a noticeable spring in their step and the passion and care they have from their products clearly echo on in the final production. A brief walk up the stairs and we arrive at the offices. The work environment is that of a typical office, yet it’s a little quieter. It is hard to find one person who does not appear to be glued to their work and who do not seem entranced by what they are doing. The same passion of the craftsmen downstairs appears to run equally as strong in the office. Once we meet Vincent, it is quite easy to see how this environment was created and what strong underlying principles run through all areas of the business. Vincent starts by explaining that his goal has always been to ‘Create the perfect bespoke living area, with the client at the heart of it’. ‘We wanted to bring integrity back in to the interiors market, looking at what our clients need and then creating our service around that’. It is clear that no matter what the job, or the client, Vincent is driven by the desire to co-create tailored interior design that is not only practical and

functional but reflects the personality of its inhabitants. This single goal shapes the way in which the company operates. The focus on attention to detail, allows their creative team to produce interiors that are wholly customised for each individual client. Rather than designing interiors for the mass public, the staff and creative team at increation tailor their work solely around each individual job. ‘We start from a blank piece of paper, listing desire and need, we see what registers with the client and then we create the environment to show the individualism of the people’. Vincent started as a cabinet maker in Oxfordshire, who as a student would sell pieces of furniture to pay for his study. At 21, determined to make his mark on the industry, he set up his business and won his first major tender; to furnish a large-scale boat. The results immediately started to show, as he received enquiries from friends and relatives of the boat-owner who were so impressed, they requested that he used his skills to design the living areas in their homes. After just 2 years, Vincent was already operating from a workshop in East London, which he had fully refurbished whilst dealing with more incoming requests for his work. After just four years in, Vincent had moved again, and totally refurbished his workshops and design studio in Pixley Street, London where the company continued to expand and what has grown to become the ‘Increation’ we know today. FEBrUARY2012

house garden

It is rare to find a company that has grown quite as successfully and organically as increation. By focusing on their client’s desires and working creatively around them, they have built up an extensive list of delighted customers and a prestigious reputation. ‘It did not take long to reailise that there was a space in the market for our business’. ‘The customer thinks about their entire room, and more importantly how they are going to live in that room, it’s our job to make it happen’. It is clear that Vincent is driven by the relationships and results he provides for his clients. He speaks very fondly of jobs he has worked on and the relationships he creates and upholds with his clients. Vincent has dealt with an array of clients and he continues to adapt his methods to achieve the best results. ‘Everybody is creative, and even if they believe they are not, they at least know what they do not like. ‘Working hand in hand with the client is what makes the difference’. Surprisingly increation do not choose to work with just anyone. ‘We require a certain level of input from all of our customers’. ‘After all, the project is based around them so we need to truly understand their needs and desires’. Vincent explains that a project will usually start with an initial telephone conversation, briefing the team on what the clients goals are. Following that, an in-house meeting is arranged, to understand the scope, look, feel, budget and timing of the work. If this is all in check, a series of design consultations will be set up at the clients homes, so that the increation team can get to know the clients, what type of people they are and what they are looking to achieve. Finally, a very detailed plan is provided, down to every tap and handle with a definitive layout of costs and timescales. There are no fears of hidden costs, just one company to deal with for the entire project and a clear and concise outlay of the work. The process does not necessarily have to be

78 F E B r U A R Y 2 0 1 2

time consuming to the client. ‘We appreciate that some people are very time poor, so we do our best to work around them’. ‘As long as we have the information we need from our clients, we will provide the rest’. ‘Given that we have a good idea of they want to achieve, they can be as actively involved as they wish’. According to Vincent, the main area of the house that many clients are choosing to refurbish is the Kitchen. Of late, the Kitchen has turned in to somewhat of a ‘hub’ of the house. Obviously aside from preparing the food, nowadays it is the most frequent place where families will relax and be together. ‘Seeing the reaction on our clients faces when stepping in to their new kitchen for the first time will never get old’. A new kitchen will not only change the dynamic in which we live in our homes, but make our experience in being there more enjoyable. No longer will people have to ‘make do’ with a certain design flaw of a kitchen, picked out of a catalogue or showroom. Instead every aspect of the design, from the handles of the cupboards to the movement, fittings and storage is completely modified for them. Vincent allows his clients to combine their own desires and dreams with the creativity and craftsmanship of his designers and builders. There is no longer a need to find ‘that certain matching colour of lampshade’ to go in your living room, or certain ‘style of cupboard’ for the corner of the kitchen. Vincent and his team at increation offer a completely bespoke, personable service to turn their clients dreams in to a reality. This is something that becomes even more of an attractive purchase in the current economic climate, where investment savvy individuals look to add value to their homes when buying is not a feasible option. As we draw in for a close Vincent courteously thanks us for our time, smiles at an E-mail on his blackberry and hurries off excitedly back to work. With a single priority to make his clients happy he and his entire team have created an organic business model, which is hard to rival. Every designer planning, every craftsman creating, every fitter installing, all of the team are working towards a single measurable objective. What Vincent has managed to do, is bring back the raw integrity and creativity of interiors that is required, in order to make their clients fall in love with their home all over again.

Create an exceptional Space and Order Kathryn’s obsession with the flow of space is illustrated in all of her work. It is an element which must lie in the background......you don’t know it is there but it is fundamental to making the space ‘work’. She believes in creating a journey through the space for each occupant; what do they need? how do they feel? in what order does this journey take place? It can be useful to create zonal map of how you intend

A year passed quickly however and with a young child and finding herself pregnant for the second time, it wasn’t long before they needed even more space. “We considered moving but the costs involved would mean we had to move out of an area we loved.” Other houses in the street had converted their unused loft space so they knew it was possible. “My husband (a designer) set about drawing up our own plans” Beks comments. “We wanted to maximise space by fitting in two bedrooms and a shower room.” After getting quotes from local builders, the Notts chose L&E (Lofts and Extensions) to realise their vision. “We invited L&E round after seeing a case study in our local magazine” Beks remembers. They were surprised to find L&E offered the best value of all the builders “Even on first meeting, we really trusted them. The payment plan was very clear with no pressure to pay each stage until we were completely happy. The surveyor and foreman just seemed like our sort of people. It’s also nice to support local business as that’s part of the appeal in a place with such a sense of community.” With just over 10 weeks to go until Beks’ due date, L&E began the build. Within six days they had the shell up and the property watertight. “Progress was so rapid; we couldn’t quite believe it ourselves.” With so many builders about and living on a terraced street, Beks was concerned about the disruption to neighbours. “I needn’t have worried. Our neighbours even commented on how tidy and how polite the whole team were. They took great pride in their work and were respectful of the fact we were still living in the house.” Work progressed quickly, with the main part of the build

being completed in just less than 4 weeks. With Jolyon at work and Beks heavily pregnant they were able to rely on their foreman to project manage the build. “My husband is used to dealing with contractors but we didn’t need too much involvement as our foreman was in control and when the need arose was always available to discuss any issues.” The team completed the project in the nick of time. “They told us the job would take 9 to 10 weeks and they cleared everything out on the 10th week exactly on schedule.” Billy arrived four days later and was able to move straight into his newly created bedroom. “That wasn’t the last we saw of them however,” Beks recalls “as they brought round a bottle of champagne, a card from the team and their congratulations soon after we arrived home!” With the conversion complete, they now have both the bedroom and bathroom space they longed for. “We are thrilled. The final result means that we can stay in this house which we love, at a fraction of the cost of moving home. We have doubled our upstairs space meaning that we can have people to stay while at the same time giving the children their very own rooms. That alone makes a big difference.” Mr and Mrs Nott are so confident recommending L&E (Lofts and Extensions) that they are even happy to show you round their new home. Contact them via L&E to arrange a viewing. L&E (Lofts and Extensions), The Old Office Block, 16 Elmtree Road, Teddington, TW11 8ST. n average, people spend from £8,000 to a massive £20,000 on a new kitchen. It is about creating a dream space...so depending on the price range, what can that buy you?

an antique-style armoire for displaying tableware and an island unit with matching hood as a focal point. Hang copper pans on a black wrought iron pot hanger and accessorise the room with rustic oil bottles and richly coloured earthenware.

Contemporary kitchens

Shaker Style kitchen

The sleek look that comes hand in hand with a contemporary kitchen will provide instant gratification. The practical use of space allows for more movement in the kitchen and provides easier access to storage areas and necessary equipment as you prepare those mouth-watering dishes. Also, contemporary colours provide a more open feeling which adds into the functional atmosphere of the space. That is, in essence, one of the great benefits of contemporary custom kitchen designs; the array of options available. No matter what your exact tastes and preferences, there is a contemporary kitchen design that will meet all your specific needs.

The clean lines and rustic feel of a shaker kitchen means they appeal to those who adore both contemporary design and a classic look and feel. The round knobs, pillow-fronted doors and beautiful woods are features that epitomise the classic shaker style kitchen. The floor plan in a shaker kitchen is open, with cabinets often lining the sides of the kitchen. An island in the middle can make an attractive and very useful addition and can be created for you in classic shaker styling. This dignified, elegant kitchen is never excessive but nevertheless stunning to look at and work in.

French country kitchen

A retro kitchen is styled in a way that includes elements that imitate kitchen trends of the past. You might find psychedelic colours that hark back to the 1970s, or even appliances based on those found in American households of the 1950’s. Adding a touch of retro fun to your new kitchen can be a great way to give character to the space, and is sure to provide a few nostalgic talking points.

This look combines rustic country charm with a grand, chateaulike sophistication. Opt for units in an aged shade of parchment or dove grey featuring beautifullyturned, bevelled detailing. Team with natural stone or slate on the floor, black or cream enamel Aga, chunky wooden worktops and tiled splashbacks in earthy shades. This also works well with freestanding features, so choose 84 F E B r U A R Y 2 0 1 2

designed for whatever you are likely to want to do in it. There are people who want to frame pictures, wash dogs, even do keep fit in their kitchens. If you’re remodelling from scratch and have a large space, think open plan and multi-purpose - somewhere to eat, work, cook and relax. Kitchen experts John Lewis of Hungerford advise thinking hard about your lifestyle. “The vivacious party animal” needs a U-shaped kitchen with island in the middle and open ended for social gathering, for example. “The Good Life fans” prefers a big L-shaped layout with a range-style cooker, large fridge and freezer and large farmhouse table. “The London weekday bolthole” needs galley-style layout with plenty of wall storage cabinets because most of the below surface cupboards are filled with appliances and gadgets. Meanwhile the “pony club set” loves a free-standing pantry offset to a wrap-around kitchen with peninsula and, of course, an Aga.

by looking at the construction of your existing floor and make sure it’s suitable for the type of flooring you’ve got in mind. Heavy materials such as stone or terracotta tiles need a solid concrete base. If you’re laying a floor over wood, go for lighter materials such as lino, vinyl or wooden floorboards. Vinyl flooring Comfortable and warm underfoot, vinyl is one of the most costeffective flooring options and comes in a range of colours and patterns. For a durable surface that won’t fade, choose a vinyl with the colour running through - those with surface patterns tend to develop a patchy look over time. Your supplier can advise you on the correct grade for your kitchen and, if you have the budget, have it installed by a professional, as badly fitting vinyl will peel at the edges. To keep it looking pristine, sweep it regularly and clean with a non-abrasive cleaner. Stone or slate. Consult an expert if you’re thinking of using stone or slate on a kitchen floor as its porous nature means it can stain easily. It’s also one of the most expensive floors you can buy, but it will add value to your home. To reduce the risk of staining, go for the less porous slate rather than marble or limestone and make sure you have it professionally sealed. Look at travertine too - a natural stone made in Italy from calcium carbonate. It has a pitted appearance, comes in many colours and stands up to most cleaning products, making it the durable choice. If you have kids and pets running around, natural stone may not be the best option for you. Laminate is a great, cost-effective option that creates an authentic, real wood plank effect at a fraction of the cost of the real thing. These days, you’ll also find stone and ceramic tile effects too. Laminates are tough so they’re ideal for busy households with lots of traffic in the kitchen. To

Cabinets

Cabinets are the workhorse of your kitchen, so always push your budget as far as possible. Think practically as well as aesthetically when it comes to the finish (highly polished dark colours show fingerprints easily, for example) and remember, neutrals stand the test of time more than bold colours which, incidentally, rarely work in small kitchens. You can always apply brighter colours to the walls or splash-backs (glass is effective). Don’t neglect handles - they can make or break a kitchen. Hettich and Hefale have a good selection with timeless clean lines and if you’re feeling flush, Valli & Valli have handles to die for. Small handles generally don’t work, but chrome is effective and never dates. Worktops

Avoid wood near sinks or you’ll become a slave to re-oiling, and be warned, glass worktops quickly look tired and scratched. Consider twin-edged worktops that look like glass, but are laminate. Corian is good for the seamless look. Designers say there’s nothing they can’t do with it - sinks of the same material, coved upstands and so on. Granite remains the top worktop choice. There are so many more materials at similar prices to the ubiquitous black. For sinks, stainless steel is best. For taps, the tri-flow system provides filtered water. For cheaper ways to get the wow factor, mix and match your worktops - for example, quartz and stainless steel - or vary the depth of work surfaces. Kitchen Flooring

To put on a fantastic floor show, do your homework first. Start 86 F E B r U A R Y 2 0 1 2

create the appearance of real wood floorboards, choose a laminate with bevelled edges that form a v shape between the planks when they’re butted up together. Even better, this flooring is designed to be clicked together so there’s no need for messy glue and you can even lay it yourself if you’re a competent DIYer. A real hardwood floor is expensive, but will add value to your home. Treat it with a Polyurethane finish to make it easier to maintain and clean. Wipe spills up quickly though, as any water sitting for a length of time on the floor will result in warping. Unlike laminates, if your floor gets damaged, you don’t have to replace the boards - you can simply sand them down and treat them again.

kitchen special Downlights

Downlights provide a light that washes over your kitchen to provide a general ambient glow. Choose halogen lights if you like clean, sparkling white illumination and put them on a dimmer switch so you can adjust the clarity to change the mood in the room. If you install more than one dimmer, you can create a variety of lighting effects - almost like building layers of light to give depth and warmth to the kitchen. Light at different levels Think of lighting as a design tool to emphasise or detract from good or bad features in a room. For example, if you have a really high ceiling which looks gloomy, use it to its best advantage by installing uplights on the top of kitchen cabinets to throw a general ambient light over the whole room. This will reduce your need for downlights, too. And if your kitchen is galleystyle or cramped, choose downlights such as John Cullen’s Polestar - it gives a warm glow to the room and bounces light around, giving the feeling of space. Think about using light down near the floor, too, to wash a glow over the floor. If you have a central island, install lights in the plinth so it appears to float Light for decoration

If you have features in your kitchen that are particularly attractive, show them off using light. Draw attention to shelves by installing lights underneath; fit downlights into glass display cabinets to show off a collection of china; or use picture lights on the wall to draw the eye to a beautiful print or poster. If you’re getting a kitchen made specially for you, a truly bespoke kitchen, it will be tailor made for both the space and you. For pure luxury, this is the best that money can buy. So you can create your own dream kitchen!

Ceramic tiles area popular choice for kitchens as they come in so many colours, textures and patterns allowing you to create your own unique look. You can even use a central colour and create a tiled border all around to frame the floor. Remember though, you need a solid concrete base for tiles as floorboards would shift underneath and cause cracks to form. Ceramic can be cold underfoot so consider installing underfloor heating Kitchen Lighting

These days, the kitchen is a hub of activity where we do more than just whip up the family’s meals, so your lighting has to be flexible: illuminating work stations for cooking and offering a warm, welcoming glow for dining and entertaining. However, don’t attempt the electrics yourself - this is one area of expertise that requires the services of an accredited professional. This is also the perfect time to have an electrician fit extra sockets and a plumber to do any necessary work. Task Lighting

Safety must come first in any kitchen as you’re constantly using sharp knives, scalding water and hot pans. For high activity areas where you’ll be preparing food you need plenty of illumination, so work out which areas you’ll be using for practical purposes and install task lighting - i.e., focused, directional, bright light. To avoid task lights throwing shadows over your work surfaces, make sure you position them directly above or slightly in front of where you stand to prepare food. The best place is on the wall or below cupboards. Install your task lighting on a different circuit than your mood lighting to give you more flexibility in your lighting scheme. 88 F E B r U A R Y 2 0 1 2

Design, Build & Make

I

f you are undertaking a building project of any size there are three key factors to consider; quality, programme & budget. Naturally you as client would expect all three, the best quality design and build and for it to be finished on time and for an agreed cost. This does not seem at all unreasonable but traditionally to achieve all three is hard. The traditional relationships between client/designer, designer/builder and client/builder can become confused and grey. This can compromise quality, lead to delays and increase costs; the process becomes stressful and unenjoyable, the phrase “i’ll never do that again” springs to mind. Footprint design studio and L&D are currently working

Porcelain Veneers

TeeTh whiTening

inVisiBle Braces

Porcelain veneers use thin shells of porcelain that are bonded onto the front of your teeth to restore them to their original lustre. Porcelain veneers can mask the appearance of chipped or stained teeth, while also straightening teeth that are slightly crooked or misaligned.

Teeth whitening treatments have become extremely popular in recent years and are now amongst the most asked for cosmetic dental treatments. Teeth whitening treatments can transform the appearance of the teeth in a matter of hours and give you a glossy, healthy looking smile.

The latest advancements in orthodontics mean that you can enhance your natural smile by straightening your teeth so that nobody knows you’re wearing anything. When the most natural result and the most non-invasive option is what you wish for then why not take a look at all the ‘invisible’ brace options. FEBrUArY2012

weating is one of the most important ways in which the body loses heat, however, people with hyperhidrosis (Excessive sweating) produce sweat in amounts far greater than needed to control their temperature. It is thought that about 0.5% of the population (or about 1 person in 200) has some form of hyperhidrosis. Hyperhidrosis is a treatable medical condition which occurs regardless of environmental surroundings – people with hyperhidrosis sweat profusely nearly all day, every day. There are two main types; Primary (focal) hyperhidrosis can affect one or more body areas, most often the palms of hands, armpits, soles of the feet or face, and sometimes the groin in men and under the breasts in women. Secondary hyperhidrosis, however, is generalized, typically involving the whole body and caused by an underlying condition like diabetes or medication such as anti-depressants.

how is hYPerhiDrosis TreaTeD?

Initially, simple self-help measures may be useful: • Wear Cool clothing • Avoiding certain foods which may trigger sweating ( such as caffeinated products, chocolate, spicy or sour foods, hot foods, alcohol, foods or drinks containing citric acid) • Reducing stress, tension or anxiety • Increased attention to personal hygiene 102 F E B r U A r Y 2 0 1 2

(FDA) approved Botox for the treatment of severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis in patients unable to obtain relief using antiperspirants. Treatment involves multiple tiny injections of botulinum toxin (type A) (botox) under each armpit. Effects start within the first week after treatment and last for an average of seven months before further injections are required. Side effects are rarely troublesome. TreaTMenTs:

Topical treatment with Aluminium chloride some rollon or aerosol anti-perspirants are the first-line treatment for Axilliary (underarm) hyperhidrosis. The effects last only for 48 hours and the deodorants can cause irritation to the underarms. The exception to this is if the excessive sweating symptoms occur during, or are exacerbated by, known anxiety-provoking situations such as during presentations at work. In these cases, treating the underlying anxiety is the best option. Iontophoresis is the passage of a weak electric current through a water bath. The area affected by sweating is immersed in the water and electrically charged particles clock the activity of sweat glands. When effective, this lasts for three-four days but can become longer with repeated use. With correct education and training, people can often perform this procedure at home. There is a variety of drug

treatments available. Some of these affect the body’s entire nervous system and side effects such as a dry mouth, drowsiness and constipation can be troublesome. Where sweating is made worse by stress or anxiety, other drugs (beta blockers) may be used with less troublesome side effects. Injections of botulinum toxin (type A) into the skin has been shown to be a very effective treatment for all types of focal hyperhidrosis, where people have not adequately responded to topical antiperspirant therapy or if the side effects of such therapy are intolerable. The U.S. Food & Drug Administration

Your GP will be able to advise you on the treatments detailed in this article. Many cosmetic surgery or medi-spa clinics also offer injection treatment with botulinum toxin (type A). The International Hyperhidrosis Society is the only non-profit, independent, global organisation that increases awareness and understanding of excessive sweating, improves access to hyperhidrosis treatments and offers education for medical professionals in order to improve the diagnosis and care of excessive sweating.

The suPer sonic cleansing Brush - clarisonic Mia (£120 AvAILAbLE fROm spACE NK)

If your skin looks dull, dry and uneven, then you need to upgrade your cleansing routine to include a Clarisonic Mia along with your daily cleansing fluid. After using this I was truly amazed at how effective this cleanser was at ridding my skin of the make-up I thought I usually removed effectively. Compact and lightweight,

Mia’s gentle sonic vibrations cleansed my skin deeply, clearing pores; reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles; helping reduce oily areas, dry skin patches and blemishes and was gentle enough for cleansing my sensitive skin every day. Fully rechargeable, waterproof and available in a range of colours, Clarisonic Mia can

remove 6 times more make up than manual cleansing and encourages 61% better absorption of key skincare such as vitamin C into your skin. My skin looked fresher and because my regular skincare was working harder, it was softer and smoother than it had been in a long time. You NEED this on your bathroom shelf !

If you continuously exercise but that stubborn cellulite still won’t budge, then you need the latest beauty breakthrough in the HoneyBelle BodyBuffer. 70% of women clinically tested found a significant improvement in the appearance of their cellulite after just 30 days when used twice daily for 10 minutes. Utilising high frequency oscillation massage, the strong vibrations penetrate the deep soft tissues in bum and thighs enhancing blood and lymphatic flow which in turn breaks down fat cells and decreases water retention. This results in enhanced collagen function, skin elasticity and smooth skin diminishing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and stretch marks. As a bonus, the HoneyBelle (and its travel sized sister babyBelle) can also be used post exercise to relax muscles.

Using Light and Heat Energy (LHE), no!no! Skin sends gentle healing pulses of LHE deep inside the skin to open the pore, destroy the bacteria, soothe the pain and reduce inflammation. I used no!no! Skin on a particularly bad breakout and the difference I saw overnight was remarkable. It didn’t dry out my skin like topical skincare does, and I felt confident to brave the world fresh faced. As the roller is rolled over the skin, numerous, ultra-fine microneedles penetrate through the epidermis to create microscopic punctures on the skin’s surface. New studies have shown that by opening the skin in this way there is a dramatic increase in the penetration of any topical product used; increasing its efficacy whilst also stimulating the skin’s healing mechanisms

Now you can enjoy the magic of keeping fish, without lots of work... The truth about filters

Many traditional aquariums have a filter on the side or at the top, but guess what - fish waste sinks. All biOrbs have a filter at the bottom of the aquarium. Put simply, the filter works where there is most to filter. We’ve even made it easy to change. It takes seconds and you only need to do it every four to six weeks.

Slim built-in lighting

It’s so slim you’d be forgiven for not noticing it was there. The LED light is neatly built-in to the lid. The LED’s themselves are bright, low voltage and long lasting.

Everything you’ll need, in one box When you buy a biOrb you’ll get everything you need

to start your aquarium. You won’t need to go shopping for any additional parts and you’ll get full instructions to help you on your way. Just add water and fish. Then sit back and enjoy the magic of keeping fish without lots of work. Ask about biOrb at your local aquatics retailer or visit us at www.reef-one.com

here did the name come from? – I wanted the word “Cocoa” to appear in the name – a friend saw the Cocoa Bijoux box that I designed and asked – is that a jewellery box? I said no, it’s a chocolate box – she knew I was looking for a name and said that’s it then – Cocoa Bijoux! I liked the French name and also felt the meaning of “Bijoux” (jewel or trinket) reflected the quality. Also appropriately the shop is furnished in a French style and there are French products in the shop. After some 25 years of importing and distributing chocolates I decided to open my own chocolate shop – an opportunity to bring together the best and most interesting products and tastes that I have enjoyed over the years. Foremost amongst these are the hand-crafted range of House Chocolates – a combination of my taste preferences and the technical skills of the chocolatiers. These chocolates are produced by several chocolatiers - made in small batches with care and passion. This collection will continually evolve as new recipes are created and new taste sensations are developed – thereby allowing customers to venture into new areas of their chocolate experience. I call this – gastronomic innovations. I love good chocolate and the thrill of the taste experience, whether in chocolate or in food generally. The pleasure and challenge I get from the shop is getting the customers to experience and enjoy the nuances of chocolate and the endless prospects for interesting combinations. Besides the House Chocolates, we also have a comprehensive range of chocolate bars, and other non chocolate specialities like

108 F E B r U A R Y 2 0 1 2

Cocoa Bijoux London’s finest Chocolate Italian biscuits, single origin coffees and extraordinary teas. Amongst my favourites is our range of chocolate covered almonds – freshly roasted nuts covered in the best quality chocolate. We have already become renowned for our Hot Chocolate which is a direct reflection of the quality and character of our House Chocolates – pure chocolate

A petite jewel of edible treasures in a quiet street in West Hampstead

blocks crushed and cooked with milk, to order, without any additions or sugar produces what I call, Real Hot Chocolate – many customers have said it reminds them of the taste of chocolate that they enjoyed many years ago. TASTING and ENJOYING FINE CHOCOLATE

Most people enjoy eating chocolate but few people know how to taste chocolate, in the same way one would taste wine. Here are some tips to help one to start to discover and explore the nuances of flavours in chocolate. Learning what you like will be very difficult if you taste any chocolate in isolation and I suggest you compare a few bars at one time, breaking off small pieces, and cleansing the palate with some water between tasting. You should be comparing chocolates of the same colour (say Dark) and of similar cocoa percentage (say 65-75%) Tasting is very personal and subjective, but you should create your own chocolate taste image, by engaging the following senses. Always make notes as you taste each chocolate bar, describing the tasting notes as you experience

them – try to think what the taste reminds you of, to create your own tasting vocabulary for that chocolate – try to find associations in nature for example “woody” or flavours that you detect for example “spicy”. Appearance – chocolate surface should be smooth and shiny Aroma – good cocoa smells often remind us of natural products – fruit, flowers or spices Touch – it should feel silky and not sticky Sound – it should snap cleanly without crumbling Taste – taste a small piece and allow it to melt in your mouth thereby releasing all the flavours. MATCHING CHOCOLATE with DRINKS

As with food and wine matches, you need to be the judge of what works best. The same applies to Chocolates – I particularily love contrast – for example in our Kir Royale Truffles – here the smooth milk champagne truffle centre contrasts wonderfully with the tangy and slightly tart coating of Cassis powder. With Chocolates and Wines or Spirits, frankly theres too much to taste and so over time, ones own combination preferences will evolve. Learn to know the nuances of your chocolate and then match them to wines or spirits that have similar characteristics. Generally though, dark chocolates need to be paired with stronger red wines, and sweeter chocolates (milk Chocolate) needs sweeter wine, otherwise the wine may taste tart. ocated in London’s literary quarter, resides the stunning Radisson Edwardian Bloomsbury Street Hotel – a gem within the Radisson Edwardian Hotel collection, and one of London’s best-kept secrets. Situated in the heart of Bloomsbury, The Bloomsbury Street Hotel is a stone’s throw from theatre land, Covent Garden, the cultural British museum and bustling Oxford Street. The beautifully designed spaces provide true five-star luxury at four-star prices and without doubt The Bloomsbury Street Hotel makes the ideal location for a London stopover. Dominating the hotel’s reception space is a striking art installation, the perfect backdrop to a team of attentive and dedicated Reception staff. Paying homage to the hotel’s location – previously home to literary legend Virginia Woolf – the hotel has dedicated an entire wall to pages from Virginia Woolf ’s celebrated novel Mrs Dalloway. And its literary links don’t stop there. Make sure to check out the hotel’s recommended ‘Book of the Month’. The Radisson Edwardian Bloomsbury Street Hotel is the first hotel to host its very own book club concept and invites its guests to take away a complimentary copy of their chosen book. This February guests will be able to enjoy ‘The Picador Book of Love Poems’ - the perfect accompaniment to a Valentine’s stay. The Bloomsbury Street Hotel offers some of the most stylish and largest bedrooms in London, with 174-bedrooms in total. And as expected each room contains the most up-to-date and essential room amenities; flat screen
