Marking the start of the 2023 gardening season with its brighter days, bulbs, buds and blossom is the BBC Gardeners’ World Spring Fair at Beaulieu. The Spring Fair will take place from 28-30 April with a focus on seasonal plants, fresh ideas and preparations for the gardening year ahead.

Local artist Edward Hall draws his inspiration from the dramatic coastal and inland landscapes of Dorset’s Jurassic Coast. At Lyme Regis Museum’s Rotunda Gallery from 18 January until 5 March, his latest exhibition, ‘Portraits of Golden Cap’, explores the iconic form and setting of this highest point on the south coast. Hall’s formative years in rural Essex and Cumbria nurtured his love of the outdoors and a lifelong passion to explore and interpret the landscapes around him through painting. After a busy career as a chartered landscape architect that left little time for painting, he made a recent lifestyle change that resulted in a move to West Dorset.

Embrace Spring with us on our family bushcraft and foraging sessions (min age 4+). We have all the usual bushcraft activities and some Easter themed camp crafts for you to make in the woods with us. Connecting people to nature is our passion and our team love nothing better than helping families learn new skills to enjoy their time outside together more. We have some super bushcraft buffs on our team who love to share their knowledge and outdoor expertise with you. Gather your tribe and join us in the woods to learn all sorts of bushcraft skills. Your session will involve several short activities so you will learn lots of new skills that you can take away to develop and build on together outdoors. Our family friendly activities will include a taster of activities from shelter building, tool use and camp crafts and fire lighting – using different techniques like flint and steel and using your fire to cook tasty treats like smores. During Easter we will be making some special themed crafts too!

‘THE OLD CURRY HOUSE IN POOLE’

(Bridgwater and Taunton College) will create three present-day odes to a Victorian garden, mentored by award winning garden designer Cherry Carmen, who’s accolades include a Gold Award at BBC Gardeners’ World Live. FURLONG CENTRE Supports Ringwood ECO Fair 2023

SATURDAY 20TH MAY FROM 10.30AM

Organised by Ringwood Actions for Climate Emergency (RACE) and hosted by The Furlong shopping centre, this year’s Ringwood Eco Fair is focusing on making space for nature. As part of this they will be giving away 50 dwarf fruit trees to be planted in the gardens of Ringwood. First come, first served.

Come along to learn how you can encourage more wildlife in your garden and find opportunities to get involved with local groups who have a passion for nature.

There will be groups, individuals and businesses with interactive stalls, local craft stalls with nature inspired products for sale and it will all be located at the Furlong Centre and outside the Gateway Building close to Ringwood car park and the bus stops. Plus, from 2pm there will be a clothes swap in the Meeting House.

Fun for all the familybring your children along to create their own leaf art, sample some vegan food, build a bug hotel and learn about trees and their importance to wildlife. Opportunities to learn about the New Forest National Park Authority and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust.

Hannah began her training at the internationally renowned Charles H. Cecil Studios in Florence at the age of eighteen. The private atelier teaches the sight-size technique, a classical method practised by masters from Titian and Velazquez to Singer-Sargent, in which the sitter is placed alongside the canvas at a distance to create a life size painting that carries from a far. After three years in Florence, she now exhibits and is based in Dorset, while travelling all over the UK to complete commissioned work. Hannah always works from life under natural light and mainly in figurative portraiture. However, still life and landscape painting also make up a significant part of her portfolio.

Working in oil with a limited palette of six colours, a medium made up of a recipe of balsam and oils that dates back to the Old Masters, and a mixture of rough hog brushes and the softest sable to build and create texture, her tool of choice for blending and recreating the softness of chiaroscuro is actually her fingers.

Working with sitters to compose a natural and vibrant portrait, she always enjoys the process of getting to know her subjects, allowing organic conversation to let the character of the sitter emerge as the painting unfolds.

BROWNSEA ISLAND WALKS

There is plenty to discover here on Brownsea Island and, at a mile long and just under a mile wide, you can take in a range of habitats during your visit. Brownsea is a magical place where people and nature happily coexist, wildlife is conserved, and the landscape is sensitively managed. In spite of its small size, Brownsea has a wealth of different habitats to explore, from a sheltered lagoon to open heath, seashores, grasslands and woodland, each boasting its own fascinating wildlife. We have plenty of way marked walks for the whole family or more experienced rambler and winter is the perfect time to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the island. You may even spot one of the elusive Sika deer or the rare red squirrel.

Our view points and woodlands walk (Orange route - 1 hour) offers stunning cliff top views across the Purbecks and can be the perfect spot for a warming spring time picnic. Wander along South Shore beach and you’ll be amazed to find old pottery pieces that remain from the days when Brownsea had a pottery factory. Venture further on the Scouting and Maryland walk (pink route 35 mins) to what remains of the old village and imagine the thriving community that once lived there.

Ramble across the heath block on the Heathland walk (blue route - 40 mins) where you might spot some Japanese Sika deer, some of whom will be pregnant following the rutting season last year. If you’re quiet, you will spot them grazing as they take on board as much food as possible during the early part of the year.

You can also join one of our daily, free introductory guided walks to introduce the history and wildlife of the island. Walks start near reception at 11:30 and 2pm and last about 45 minutes.

Our Visitor Centre is a great place for a pit stop. Head in and chat to one of our friendly volunteers and learn about the wildlife on the island and the important work we are doing to conserve this special place. Take a seat and warm up in our cosy corner and pour over one of our many history or wildlife books.

PUGWASH, SANDBANKS

The door into the garage is a submarine door and what lies beyond was far from a usual garage; with a strip-lit red carpet leading through to a basement cinema room fully fitted with bespoke red velvet seating. “When they had the cinema installed they had a grand opening party of famous film characters with the help of friends involved in the film business. George was, of course, Captain Sparrow, a character that inspired the feathers he wore in his long hair”.

Always keen to be different and stand out from the crowd George was a creative man who loved to express himself through his unique sense of style with ever changing haircuts, beard styles and fashion choices; “Dad LOVED clothes, always looking so cool, there was no-one like him!” his daughter remembers.

Upstairs on the first floor the views really steal the show and it’s easy to see how well this home fulfilled George’s dream to live by the water. A bespoke galley kitchen overlooks the harbourside with a balcony to enjoy sundowners with the stunning sunsets. SPOTLIGHTS CREATIVITY AND RESILIENCE OF UKRAINIAN DESIGNERS By Prudence Wade

Three of Ukraine’s most prominent designers have shown their latest collections on the final day of London Fashion Week (LFW).

Kseniaschnaider, Paskal and Frolov made their LFW debut at the Old Selfridges Hotel, as Ukrainian Fashion Week has been cancelled due to the war.

At the beginning of the show, a voice on the speakers said: “These collections are and will continue to be a piece of history, symbolic of the resilience and courage of Ukraine and its people.”

On each seat was a description of each designer’s collection, a Ukrainian flag and a QR code for UNITED24 – the official fundraising platform of Ukraine.

Kseniaschnaider – founded by husband and wife team Ksenia and Anton Schnaider – opened the show. The brand is known for its use of denim and commitment to sustainability. The show notes said the collection was “designed during the war and produced under raid sirens in Ukraine”. Despite the circumstances, it was infused “with an air of hope and positivity”.

Denim ran throughout the collection, in edgy pairs of jeans and cut-offs. There were also plenty of sporty elements, including a tailored tracksuit and Adidas trainers. It was given a distinctly Ukrainian feel with the addition of traditional patchworking techniques and models with braids in their hair. Dead stock ties were used throughout the collection, patchworked into blazers and skirts.

According to the show notes, this was a symbol of Ukrainian men no longer needing ties – instead only wearing military uniforms.

Next came Paskal, by designer Julie Paskal, whose collection, called Out of Cocoon, had everything themed around butterflies.

Models wore dresses and skirts in pastel pinks and blues, almost completely covered in delicate, laser-cut butterflies.

It seemed to take inspiration from 90s fashion, with crop tops, slip dresses and visible thong detailing on some outfits.

Frolov closed the show, helmed by

designer Ivan Frolov. Frolov has become a celebrity favourite, most recently worn by Beyonce during her first performance in five years at the opening of Atlantis The Royal in Dubai. She donned a see-through pink minidress with silver detailing from the brand. For the autumn/winter collection, the show notes said Frolov was inspired by “reflections of the current events in Ukraine, and the value of Ukrainian cultural heritage”. This collection had the most options for the red carpet, from white tulle gowns with corset detailing to pink power suits. A heart motif ran throughout the outfits, which is described as “the everlasting element of the brand”.

Swarovski crystals embellished many of the outfits, and knitwear featured the Ukrainian fertility symbol, an ear of grain. The show ended with Ksenia Schnaider, Julie Paskal and Ivan Frolov walking the runway holding the Ukrainian flag with the UNITED24 logo.

Julien Macdonald returned to the London Fashion Week schedule after a three-year hiatus with a celebrity-packed show.

Amanda Holden and her 17-year-old lookalike daughter Lexi were on the front row as the collaboration with Mexican designer Gabriela Gonzalez was unveiled.

Gemma Collins, Despacito singer Luis Fonsi, Strictly Come Dancing stars Aljaž Škorjanec and Janette Manrara, and presenter Ashley Roberts, were among the other celebrities in attendance.

While supermodels Winnie Harlow, Leomie Anderson and Cindy Bruna walked the runway.

The Julien X Gabriela AW23 show was held at the ornate Freemasons’ Hall, central London – the ideal backdrop for a typically glitzy collection.

British model Anderson opened the show in a black sequinned bodysuit with cut out details and exaggerated shoulders – to Sam Smith and Kim Petras’ hit Unholy.

The show was soundtracked by a series of club bangers, including Beyonce’s Break My Soul and the TikTok-famous White Lotus theme tune, Renaissance.

Bruna’s strutting in a white feathered minidresses elicited cheers from the audience, as did Harlow’s appearance in a black bodysuit and flowing cape with feather collar.

Harlow closed the show, taking a final turn to Chaka Khan’s I’m Every Woman.

Macdonald and Gonzalez joined the trio of top models to take a bow as silver confetti rained down – marking a triumphant return to the London catwalks.

THE DESIGN ARCHIVES

The Design Archives owned by Sharon Crowson, is a London based boutique interiors brand specialising in printed textiles and wallpaper. The designs are inspired by historic documents taken from the Crowson Archive, the legacy of her distinguished textile printer and collector father, Derek Crowson. The brand under Sharon’s direction, remains constant in its commitment to embracing a classic heritage of pattern and texture, while injecting a contemporary twist through her signature taste in colouring and an inventive use of scale, bringing to life some of the archive’s most beautiful designs.

Each stand alone collection has a specific aesthetic and style. The best selling Shala collection includes three vintage designs from the historical archive. The collection includes the eponymously named Shala based on a classic Indian floral motif, a large scale floral chinoiserie with sweeping botanical notes called Exotic Fruits, and Albertina which is a classic French toile design. Last year the brand also launched The Birchgrove Collection, its first dedicated group of wallpaper designs to add a new offering alongside its bespoke fabric backed papers. New for 2023 is Samarkand, a vibrant and eclectic fabric collection comprising of printed archival designs inspired by traditional ikat and hand woven kilim textiles, which will be previewed this spring at London Design Week.

Over the last five years the archive has provided an invaluable source of inspiration for Sharon, and mindful that she wanted to capitalise on this rich and diverse collection, she embarked on an ambitious project creating The Crowson Archive. “We curated and digitised the entire collection of over 5000 designs which has been a massive labour of love but so satisfying” explains Sharon. The archive can now be accessed by anyone who registers on the dedicated site, providing an incredible source of inspiration of styles, from 18th century Japanese prints, through to French chinoiserie and modern 1960s abstract designs.

Spring Clearing Week is just around the corner. Unlike the traditional spring clean, the focus is on clearing the decks of any physical, and consequently mental, clutter. Running from 20-26 March, over 400 members of APDO Association of Professional Declutterers and Organisers will be sharing their knowledge and advice to help the UK to declutter and streamline activities in their homes and workspaces.

Katherine Blackler, the UK’s first Certified Professional Organizer (CPO®) and Past-President of APDO explains “Reducing the amount of things you need to clean, maintain, repair and replace saves you time and money. This in turn reduces stress and frustration. Daily agitations like misplacing car keys or running out of an ingredient can be avoided if you first simplify then introduce systems for all the household to follow. Being able to see what you have and knowing where to find it can make a huge difference to how we tackle the day and how we perceive tasks on our agenda.”

She believes that ensuring all the items you own have a logical place to live makes it easier

to regain calm and order – even when it feels more like a tornado has been through your home!

Katherine’s top tips to declutter to feel better:

1. Declutter BEFORE buying any more storage so you can see what you really need.

2. Don’t get overwhelmed trying to tackle the entire house at once. Choose one room and focus on just one area at a time (e.g. the floor, countertop, cupboard, or drawer).

3. Allocate time to sort through things. Switch off and eliminate likely distractions.

4. Getting started is often the hardest part. Take little steps if giant leaps are unrealistic. But definitely start.

5. Take ‘before’ photos. You’ll be inspired by how far you’ve come.

6. Reward yourself for your achievements, both during and at the end of the process (ideally with experiences and not more ‘stuff’!).

7. Ask for impartial and professional help if it seems daunting, or it becomes too emotional reviewing belongings with your friends and family.
