Two Titles, Two Hundred Fights and Only One Good Hand
E
stablished in 1876, Fellows auctioneers are auctioning a fantastic 1926 Lonsdale belt belonging to undefeated Welterweight Champion ‘Gentleman’ Jack Hood. As one of the UK’s leading auction houses, Fellows has a history of auctioning boxing memorabilia and in particular Lonsdale belts. In November 2000, Fellows auctioned the Randolph Turpin 1956 Lonsdale Belt for £23,000. It is now Jack Hood’s Lonsdale belt that will grace the auction room and it is sure to raise quite a stir.
Welterweight Division, Hood was never given an opportunity to fight for the World Welterweight Title because of an apparent weakness of the right hand. “Every time I landed a solid right punch an agonising pain shot through my arm” said Hood, ultimately making his achievements all the more impressive. He was therefore forced to seek contestants in the Middleweight Division, yet it was in this division where he found his greatest rivalry, with three memorable contests against the great tactician and future Heavyweight Champion of Great Britain, Len Harvey.
As a professional boxer, Welterweight Champion and pub owner, the life of Jack Hood is one laden with success and achievement. Born in Birmingham in 1902 ‘Gentleman’ Jack was led to a career in boxing through poverty. Upon leaving school and with an eye on working on the railways, at the age of 20, Hood was refused a permanent job after failing, of all things, a medical. A blessing in disguise, Hood found himself in the ring no less than 10 days later, winning the bout and with it the Midland Welterweight Championship. Whilst trying to find his way in boxing, Jack worked at Samuel Heath Brass Founders, who supported him through his early days in the ring. This was the catalyst for a career that spanned until 1934 and although Hood never had a shot at the World Welterweight Title his accomplishments include over 200 professional bouts, one Lonsdale belt, an undefeated six month period fighting in America and a bout ordered by Royal Command of the Prince of Wales.
On 31st May 1926 Hood defeated Harry Mason over a brutal 20 rounds in Holland Park Rink, Kensington, to win the Lonsdale belt and take charge of the British Welterweight Title. He then outpointed Mason once again in a rematch just two months later on 22nd July in the same venue, to retain the
Known as ‘Gentleman’ Jack, for his generous and charismatic persona both in and out of the ring, Hood went on to rule the British Welterweight Division for two decades between the 1920’s and 1930’s. Although in a class of his own in the British

Mancini. At mid-day on Monday 13th February 1928 Hood fought Len Johnson by Royal Command of the Prince of Wales at the famous Blackfriars ‘Ring’. Len Johnson had been scheduled to fight Belgian cruiserweight Fernard Delarge, however, when the then heir to the throne heard this he remarked “I’d prefer to see that Birmingham boxer, Jack Hood. Can’t they match him with Johnson?” Hood received the call from his manager whilst on holiday ‘You’re fighting at the ‘Ring’ on Monday before the Prince of Wales. The money’s good. I’ll see you at the weigh in’ and Hood swiftly caught the train to London. When the fight was all said and done, it was Hood who stood with his hand aloft by outpointing Johnson after the 15 classic rounds.
title. It then took a further two years for Hood to find someone to challenge him for his British Welterweight Title but on the 25th June 1928 Hood proved to be too good for Alf Mancini, again being victorious on points. Following his initial win and winning his two successful challenges, in line with Lonsdale rules, Hood became legible to keep his Lonsdale belt outright. Hood’s Lonsdale belt is one of the original belts made under the contract of the National Sporting Club, before changes were made to the design by the British Boxing Board of Control in 1936. This belt was made by Mappin & Webb in Birmingham and is cast in 9ct gold with the original enamelled ‘boxers’ design. It is a tremendous example of boxing supremacy and continued success in the most hegemonic of sports. The proudest moment of Jack Hood’s boxing career however, came before his 25th June 1928 Lonsdale belt battle with Alf
Boxing over 200 bouts, winning his first 187 and losing only six demonstrates the depth and success of Jack Hood’s boxing career. When Hood came to retire in 1935 at the age of 32, he was the acclaimed Champion of Great Britain, Europe and the Empire, and he retired as the undefeated and undisputed British Welterweight Champion. It is the champions that people remember and in a sport where few things come easy it took two gruelling fights with Harry Mason and one with Alf Mancini to cement Jack Hood and his Lonsdale belt in boxing history. Hood only fought once more after his retirement in 1935, at an exhibition in 1947 at the age of 44. It was also for his second life as a pub owner where many remember him. His Lonsdale belt was displayed proudly over the bar at the Bell in Tanworth -in-Arden for 32 years where ‘Gentleman’ Jack would reminisce with boxing followers and regulars alike who would come from far and wide to meet the man. When he would be asked about his days as a boxer Jack would always reply with “No regrets, I’d do it all again”. A true champion and a real gentleman, Jack Hood’s stunning Lonsdale Belt will go under the hammer during Fellows’ auction of Silver, Plated Ware, Coins & Medals on Monday 5th September 2011 and has an estimate of £15,000 - £20,000. NIGEL COOKE Better known for his black and white cityscape works, Nigel has blown us away with his new collection inspired by his travails in Yorkshire. Recently featured on the BBC for his caricature work on Blackpool’s Pleasure Beach, Nigel has captured a humorous take on country life. These original paintings have been phenomenally well received, and are sure to be a hit.
GUILLERMO JUAREZ Spanish born artist Guillermo has created a stir with his stunning still lifes. Working in oils, he draws inspiration from the precision of the Dutch Masters of the 17th Century. His crisp and refreshing style though is very modern in its composition.
KERRY DARLINGTON Ever since her first solo show was held at Gallery Rouge, Kerry Darlington has gone on from strength to strength. Her inimitable playful style has captured the hearts of many, and it is little surprise that her work is in great demand. Immediately eye-catching and unavoidable to want to touch, Kerry has been crafting a series of new compositions you will not want to miss.
JOHN MARK GLEADOW Hot of the press is the release of John-Marks latest piece entitled ‘Reflections of Europe’. This North American hyper-realistic painter continues to challenge convention with his crossover portraiture/ literature based work. His work is all the more impressive given he is partially colour-blind!!!
Kuldip personally selects the artists who are represented by the gallery, bringing a diverse ensemble of artisans to the region, constantly seeking out new work from all over the world...
ROZANNE BELL Capturing the spirit of the South West coast, Rozanne has developed a formidable following for her whimsically naive work. Demonstrating texture and depth, coupled with a strong colour palette, the painting draws you in to a world of fun and frolics.
STEVEN JONES With over 35 years of painting pedigree, Steven has now begun to forge a career as a seriously talented impressionist painter. His current collection of original paintings centres on children at play by the sea. Nostalgic and uplifting, these works remind us of happier days.
Gallery Rouge is a leading UK gallery which has created an enviable reputation in helping clients throughout Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Essex and North London. THE WORLD’S GREATEST CLASSICAL MUSIC FESTIVAL
FRIDAY 15TH JULY TO SATURDAY 10TH SEPTEMBER 2011 THIS IS THE 117TH YEAR OF THE PROMS AND STILL IT REMAINS TRUE TO ITS ORIGINAL AIM: TO PRESENT THE WIDEST POSSIBLE RANGE OF MUSIC, PERFORMED TO THE HIGHEST STANDARDS, TO LARGE AUDIENCES.
T
he first Proms concert took place on 10th August 1895 and was the brainchild of the impresario Robert Newman, manager of the newly built Queen’s Hall in London. While Newman had previously organised symphony orchestra concerts at the hall, his aim was to reach a wider audience by offering more popular programmes, adopting a less formal promenade arrangement, and keeping ticket prices low. The 100th Proms season took place in 1994 and the festival now includes over 70 main Prom concerts every year, ever widening the range of symphonic and operatic music presented. The BBC Proms continues to welcome leading international performers whilst showcasing the best of the British music scene, including the BBC’s own orchestras and choirs. The BBC Proms are broadcast on BBC Radio 3, and many are broadcast on BBC television and all broadcasts are available via the BBC iPlayer for 7 days. Seasoned enthusiast or complete newcomer, it’s easy to feel a little overwhelmed when faced with the fascinating variety of concerts that make up the BBC Proms 2011 season. There’s something to appeal to everyone, with 74 concerts in the Royal Albert Hall, 12 Chamber Proms at Cadogan Hall plus numerous other special events to choose from. The Proms Plus series incorporates over seventy events 10 A J UULG YU 2 0S1T12 0 1 1

Background
The Rainforest Foundation UK was founded in 1989 by Sting and Trudie Styler, after they saw first-hand the impact the destruction of the Amazon rainforests had on the Kayapo Indians’ way of life. This sparked the Foundation’s first campaign which, in 1993, resulted in the protection of
27,359 km² of indigenous peoples’ land. The Foundation has expanded and diversified since, and has worked in more than 20 countries to date towards the mission of supporting indigenous peoples and traditional populations of the world’s rainforest to protect their rainforest homes and fulfill their rights to land, life and livelihood’. The Foundation’s approach links human rights and environmental protection. It considers that the best way to sustainably manage rainforests, and to reduce poverty in tropical forest countries is to recognise the rights of the traditional and indigenous communities who live in those forests, and who have the traditional knowledge of protecting it. The Rainforest Foundation adopts a right-based, approach and promotes the establishment of community rights over rainforest lands, tackling the root of problems related to deforestation and paving the way for fair benefit sharing from forest resources. rewing magnate Edward Cecil Guinness, first Earl of Iveagh, bought Kenwood House and estate in 1925. When he died in 1927, he bequeathed the house, estate and part of his collection of pictures to the nation.
This was a rare opportunity to return Mansfield family items and furnishings of the 18th and 19th centuries to Kenwood. These include silver tableware, four chairs in the Chinese Chippendale style and a family portrait by Sir Peter Lely.
IVEAGH BEQUEST AND SUFFOLK COLLECTION
The history of the cultivated estate can be divided into three documented phases: the formal garden of the first half of the 18th century, as recorded in Rocque’s map of 1745; the more picturesque landscape from the 1st Earl of Mansfield’s time, as painted (with some imagination) by John Wootton in 1755; and the landscape remodelled by the 2nd Earl of Mansfield in 1793-6 and completed by the 3rd Earl, largely to Humphry Repton’s Designs.
GARDENS
The Iveagh Bequest includes important paintings by many great artists, including Rembrandt, Vermeer, Turner, Reynolds and Gainsborough. Recently they have been joined by Constable’s oil sketch ‘Hampstead Heath’. The paintings beautifully complement Kenwood’s sumptuous interiors and rich decoration. The first floor displays an equally beautiful but very different array of paintings. The Suffolk Collection of 41 paintings, predominantly family portraits, was passed down through the Suffolk and Berkshire families from the 1580s. It was given to the nation in 1974 by the Hon. Mrs Greville Howard, following the wishes of her mother-in-law, the 11th Countess of Suffolk, who died in 1968. Particularly rich in sumptuous costume and textile detail, it includes magnificent full length portraits of extravagantly dressed Elizabethan and Stuart ladies and noblemen, by William Larkin, Van Dyck and Lely, as well as paintings of King Charles I and James II. FURNISHINGS Kenwood contains purchases from a sale of objects from Scone Palace, the Mansfields’ Scottish home. 18 AUGUST2011
VISIT KENWOOD HOUSE THIS SUMMER
The landscape was designed to be seen from a planned circuit walk that provided a series of evocative views, contrasts and “surprises” for which Repton was well known. One of today’s greatest and most delightful “surprises” is to find this gentleman’s estate complete with farm, dairy, stables, kitchen garden, lakes, woods and meadows still surviving so close to the centre of London. Bordered on three sides by Hampstead Heath, the Kenwood estate, having been maintained as a designed landscape until the 1950s, has a different character from the Heath. In recent years, over-competitive species have taken over and Kenwood began to resemble a ‘wild’ heath loosing the balanced collection of contrasts between grassland, woodland and wetland. Current restoration seeks a more balanced variety, so that wild flowers, trees, animals and wildfowl may all flourish.

The BBQ is fired up every Sunday (weather permitting), with play equipment for little ones and great space it makes a brilliant venue to gather with friends and family. “It is a magnificent pub and venue. I can see many a significant occasion being celebrated here, especially if complemented with a marquee. With the beautiful surrounds I think it will be an awesome setting for any guest or host.” Lisa Forsyth, East Common, Harpenden. In Redbourn, The Cricketers are true supporters of the local community. They run charity pub quiz evenings, sponsor charity golf days and are strong supporters of Redbourn Cricket Club. For the Royal Wedding celebrations they even organised a marquee for afternoon tea, and a triumphant dinner dance for the evening. It was a truly splendid celebration.
As the team are such supporters of the community, it is no surprise they are also advocates of locally sourced produce. An article in our June 2010 magazine, mentioned The Cricketers of Redbourn even source some organically fed pork from a local vicar. They were also instrumental in delivering bespoke beer from Tring brewery for and named after Redbourn 900. Pure genius – probably. The expansion from East Common in Redbourn to East Common in Harpenden is an exciting one and hopefully as smooth as the beer. Why not try both!
There is much anticipation about The Three Horseshoes returning to a pub where dog walkers can catch up, ramblers can strategically plan a hearty lunch stop, or friends can simply SIAN DUDDY, REDBOURN enjoy a brilliant evening. With Plans afoot

If you talk to the tremendous team, you soon recognise that their ideas and general ethos for The Three Horseshoes, is all down to their energy and passion for what they do, it will be a refreshing and welcoming establishment to frequent regularly or for a special occasion. Pall Mall Today
Set in the heart of St James’s, the Pall Mall clubhouse provides a welcome sanctuary away from the bustle of Central London, in which members and their guests can relax. In all its Edwardian splendour, the high ceilings, rich carpets and ornate plasterwork, as well as a fine collection of art, help create a contemporary experience set within the luxurious and comfortable surroundings of a traditional club. The clubhouse provides a fine choice of restaurants, lounges and bars with décor and menus that range from opulence to relaxed to meet every member’s requirements. In 2007 The Great Gallery restaurant enjoyed a metamorphosis with its lavish use of gold leaf, a hand-blocked wood floor inspired by Pavlovsk Palace in St. Petersburg and a series of murals by artist Catherine Lovegrove. The unused terrace beyond became a splendid topiary-filled oasis for al fresco dining and, when smoking became outlawed, the Smoking Room also underwent a transformation. Now known as the Club Room, it retains a cheerful informality as regulars
sip tea and play chess in an awe-inspiring interior that was described in Country Life as ‘English Palladian style at its most sumptuously architectural’. The room boasts a ceiling and frieze modelled on the old War Office that stood at 89 Pall Mall before the Club was built. Members and guests can unwind in leather armchairs, take tea and sandwiches or a drink, play backgammon or chess, read a daily paper or a book from the well stocked clubhouse library. The elegant Cocktail Bar and Art Deco inspired Brooklands Room, a smaller and more informal brasserie-style restaurant rarely have a spare table and for member functions, there are six impressive private dining and meeting rooms allowing for all kinds of events, from intimate dinners and small private meetings to the very grandest receptions for up to 450 people. The exceptional sports facilities include a well-equipped gym, unique Turkish baths for male, female and mixed days, squash courts, billiards tables, treatments rooms and the famous marble columned swimming pool is the training ground for many a dedicated swimmer. Out of town members benefit from the use of its 84 en-suite rooms and full housekeeping services, while the business centre and library provide the latest technology to members away from their offices. The History of the Pall Mall Clubhouse
The purpose built Pall Mall clubhouse took three years to complete. Responsible for the work were the famed architects Messrs. Mewes and Davis, who numbered the nearby Ritz amongst their achievements. Together they pioneered a steel structure as an internal framework and utilised every new scientific innovation available at the time, electric and hydraulic lifts, central heating and air conditioning, 120 telephone lines, gas flares to illuminate the front of the building and even electric lighting. Eventually opening in March 1911, at a cost of £250,000, a Vanity Fair article of the era described the clubhouse as being ‘on a scale of grandeur absolutely unparalleled anywhere.’ The Committee convened in the new clubhouse for the long-awaited opening, but half of them got lost in the vast new building and needed guides. The interiors were equally as impressive, as were the views over London, from Nelson’s Column to Buckingham Palace. Opulent French Renaissance style décor, Doric colonnades in the central vestibule and fine paintings, all added to the splendour. In total the clubhouse contained 258 rooms, including a library, photographic studio, barbers and hairdressers, bedrooms, waiting rooms, assembly rooms, committee rooms and smoking rooms. Dining has always been central, with the original Great Gallery able to accommodate up to 500 people. Unsurpassed recreation and sporting facilities have also been a constant, with card tables, a billiard-saloon, fencing, gymnasium, a rifle range and even a bowling alley. Squash courts and a Turkish Bath were also installed, but the piece de resistance was the swimming pool with its mosaic columns, white Sicilian marble walls and bronze balconies overlooking the shimmering green water. It is even rumoured that Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret learned to swim in the pool at the Club.
Woodcote Park Today
Woodcote Park is a 350-acre estate set in the Epsom Downs, just 16 miles from Pall Mall. The handsome red brick mansion retains the style and atmosphere of a great country house and is the perfect place for members looking to escape urban life. Gold enthusiasts can enjoy two 1832 AUGUST2011
hole parkland golf courses - members can play on payment of a green fee. This is complemented by other sports facilities, including a 30-metre indoor swimming pool, four squash courts, six floodlit tennis courts, a modern gymnasium and a croquet lawn. The Boston Room, Woodcote Park’s newly refurbished main restaurant, offers the best in British and international cuisine served in formal but stylish surroundings. Completely transformed with a new menu and interior, the Boston Room is the place to go to sample the finest ingredients that Britain has to offer; succulent beef from the Castle of Mey in Scotland or free range chicken from Laverstoke Park in Hampshire. Cooked using techniques from around the world to give the dining experience a truly cosmopolitan feel. the Derby rooM
Derby Day is perhaps the highlight of Woodcote’s social and sporting calendar, but the Derby Room itself, can be used for many other occasions during the year, including dinners, luncheons, wedding receptions and conferences. It can also be used for small dances in conjunction with its smaller neighbour the Oaks Room. the oaks rooM
Named after the other June Classic run over the Epsom Downs course, the Oaks room, like the Derby Room beside it, has fine views over the Woodcote golf courses. This intimate corner room, on the first floor, is regularly used by Members to entertain smaller parties of friends, family or business colleagues. 22 bedrooms, including 1 suite, offer a very high standard of accommodation. The prestigious entertaining rooms and banqueting facilities make Woodcote Park an impressive venue for garden and drinks parties, wedding receptions, residential conferences and business meetings. The grounds can also be utilised for team activities such as archery, laser clay shooting and country pursuits. The History of Woodcote Park
In 1913 Woodcote Park near Epsom racecourse was purchased as a Country Club to compliment the Pall Mall clubhouse. Located on the site of a historic 12thCentury abbey, it was a mansion built in 1679 by Richard Evelyn (brother of diarist John), and mentioned

in his diaries by Samuel Pepys. Barely had the ink dried on the documents when the First World War was declared, and both clubhouses were put at the disposal of the armed services. In 1934, Woodcote Park was razed to the ground by fire, re-opening only 21 months later in May 1936. World War II saw the country club assume a new role, a training centre for thousands of troops with the grounds ploughed for agricultural purposes. In August 1940 a Hawker Hurricane made a forced landing in the golf course. The British pilot was helped into the Clubhouse for medical assistance, having first proved his nationality by waving a packet of ‘Players’ cigarettes at golfers in the vicinity. The intervening years saw the country clubhouse firmly establish itself as a social and golfing haven for members and guests, with two 18-hole parkland golf courses, the Coronation and the Old Course. In the 1980s investment was needed to bring Woodcote Park up to date; around £5 million pounds was invested in refurbishing and equipping the country clubhouse with a sports complex, Cedars, indoor swimming pool, squash and tennis courts. Today Woodcote Park remains a hub for members looking to escape from the hustle and bustle of London.
Motoring History
From the advent of the horseless carriage to the age of the stretch limousine, the Royal Automobile Club has been the ‘Parliament of Motoring.’ The Royal Automobile Club, Britain’s oldest and most influential motoring organisation, was born out of a shared love of motoring and a dedication to preserving the rights and best interests of motorists over 100 years ago. Founded in 1897 by Frederick Richard Simms, assisted by Charles Harrington Moore, the Club’s history mirrors that of motoring itself: In 1896 the restrictive Red Flag Act, that had required a man to walk in front of every vehicle, was repealed, the birth of motoring in the UK. The Emancipation Run, the precursor to today’s London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, was organised to celebrate the passing of the Locomotives on the Highways Act. In 1900, Claude Johnson organised the ‘Thousand Mile Trial’, putting British motoring on the map. Three years later, the Club vigorously campaigned for the Motor Act, having long had the interests of the private motorist at heart. This Act increased speed limits and removed other restrictive legislation. 1905 and the Club organised the first Tourist Trophy (TT) race, today the oldest
motoring race regularly run. In the same year the Club became the governing body for motor sport in Britain and introduced driving certificates, a responsibility which was not to be taken over by the government for another thirty years. In 1911 the Club turnover rose to £970,000 from £385,000 the previous year, as a result of a huge influx of new members, all paying 25 guineas a head to join and an annual subscription fee of 10 guineas. In 1943 Lord Mountbatten became the Club’s President. From the 1950’s to 1960’s the British car industry began to suffer from overseas competition and inefficiencies and the Club’s main rival the AA began to modernise and consolidate its service to members. Despite this the clubhouse itself continued to prosper. After Lord Mountbatten’s assassination by the IRA in 1979, Prince Michael of Kent became President of the Club. 1991 saw the formation of the RAC Foundation for Motoring. Long before that the Club, through its Public Policy Committee, had become a respected voice in the formulation of government policy on roads and motorised transport. This was recognized and strengthened by the formation, in 1991, of the RAC Foundation for Motoring, a registered charity. RAC Motoring Services Ltd, which offered roadside assistance and many other benefits to over 5½ million associate members, was sold by the Club in 1999 to the Lex Group, and later passed to Aviva, the insurance company formerly known as Norwich Union. 1999 also saw a very new era for the Club as ladies were admitted as members in their own right! Present Day
Overseen by the Club’s Motoring Committee, the Club continues to own and maintain a unique fleet of veteran and historic vehicles and runs a number of annual events including the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, which commemorates the Emancipation Run of 1896. It is the longest running motoring event, with people coming from all over the world annually to view over 500 cars dating from before 1905. Members can participate in a range of varied motoring related events whilst the Committee continues to foster links and relationships with industry and the wider motoring world. Recent award winners at the Club have included Lewis Hamilton, James Toseland, and the legendary Sir Jackie Stewart and Sir Stirling Moss famous motoring names of recent decades. AUGUST2011 33

he Goodwood Revival really is a magical step back in time, a unique chance to revel in the glamour and allure of motor racing in the romantic time capsule of the golden era of motor racing at one of the world’s most authentic circuits. The Revival is the world’s most popular historic motor race meeting and the only event of its kind to be staged entirely in the nostalgic time capsule of the 1940s, 50s and 60s that relives the glory days of Goodwood Motor Circuit. It is the biggest and best historic motor racing party of the year. The Revival offers visitors the opportunity to leave the ‘modern world’ behind and join motor sport luminaries including Sir Stirling Moss, 3 62 AJUUGLY U2 S0 T121 0 1 1
Richard Attwood, John Surtees and Derek Bell in an unabashed celebration of flat-out wheel-to-wheel racing around a classic racetrack, untouched by the modern world. The Revival is far more than a series of races for historic cars. It’s a magical step back in time and a chance for visitors to revel in the romance and theatre of motor racing as it used to be. The lovingly restored circuit is unchanged from its heyday, and great lengths are taken to ensure that everything on the site is exactly as it was. the revival is far more than a series of races for historic cars. it’s a magical step back in time
Building on water Some of the country’s foremost house builders, architects and surveyors throw caution to the wind, quite literally, when taking part in their exclusive industry event, the Little Britain Challenge Cup, Europe’s largest commercial sailing regatta, which takes place every September in Cowes, on the Isle of Wight. This year’s event, taking place 8th-11th September, received a record number of firm entries during the first week of opening their on-line booking service, something that particularly delighted the Little Britain Chairman, David Smith, from Surrey-based luxury house builders Octagon who comments,
“We see the LBCC as the perfect mix of a wonderful few days’ racing combined with some great networking opportunities. Anybody who is anybody, is here for the four day extravaganza, either bringing down company members to crew, or inviting clients who love to join in for both the racing and partying afterwards. We forsee this being a sell out year, so are urging regulars and newcomers alike, who have yet to register, not to delay, so they can be assured of place in September.” Both those wishing to actually compete, or simply join in from the quayside, there is a jam packed programme of events which will take 1500 guests through from sunrise to the early hours throughout the regatta period.
Everyone is invited to join in the evening parties held at Cowes Yacht Haven. This year, the Friday night extravaganza is Viva Las Vegas, giving guests the chance to dress up in theme, and take part in a fun filled programme of entertainment. This includes getting hitched in the Little White Wedding Chapel, and special guest appearances from ‘Elvis’, ‘Frank’, and the lovely ‘Vegas Show Girls’. The LBCC is more than just a jolly, as it continues to support a number of charities, which, more than ever, need help and support. Not least the GBR Paralympic Sailing Team. This is the LBCC’s last big chance to raise funds for these most magnificent of sailors, to ensure they enter the 2012 Olympics in winning style. Already well into serious training on the Olympic waters of Weymouth, the seven young individuals are determinedly gearing themselves towards victory, despite their varying degrees of disability which range from cerebral palsy through minus a right forearm to a double below the knee amputee.
The LBCC money really does make a huge difference, as these sailors, all professionals and regatta champions, get nothing in the way of handouts from government or councils. This is the time that costs start to soar, as the team require more boats, which come hand in hand with higher maintenance bills. As well as actively overturing sponsors themselves, to help keep their boats in prime condition and in the water, they rely on the generosity of people like the contestants and guests who attend the Little Britain Challenge Cup.

bbc one’s ne’s Antiques Roadshow visits Wimbledon
BBC ONE’s ever popular Sunday evening programme ANTIQUES ROADSHOW will be filming for its 34th series at the All England Lawn Tennis Club, Wimbledon, on Thursday, 25th August, 2011. The doors open at 9.30 am and close at 4.30pm. Entry to the show is free. This will be presenter Fiona Bruce’s fourth year with the Roadshow and she says, ‘Presenting the Antiques Roadshow is, for me, one of those rare and very lucky coincidences in television when you get to work on a 40 AUGUST2011
show that you already love to watch. Exploring the human story behind every object is what makes Antiques Roadshow so fascinating. And everyone loves the agony and ecstasy of the ‘what’s it worth? moment. The AR isn’t just about antiques - it’s history, beauty and drama all wrapped up in one.’ Some of Britain’s leading antiques and fine arts specialists will be on hand to offer free advice and valuations to visitors, who are invited to raid their attics and bring along their family heirlooms, household treasures and car boot bargains
for inspection by the experts. The last series, watched by an average of six million viewers, included some great finds such as an Egyptian stone head dug up in a garden worth £10,000, a medieval ring found on a farm and valued at £20,000 and a Meissen cup and saucer bought at a car boot sale for £2.50 which was worth £5,000. Among some of the stranger items brought along were uneaten pieces of Royal wedding cake and a life-sized model of a lion once used in a TV series. People with large pieces of furniture or other big items can send details and photographs of their objects to: ANTIQUES ROADSHOW, BBC, Whiteladies Road,
Bristol BS8 2LR or e-mail them to: antiques.roadshow@ bbc.co.uk. It may be possible to arrange to look at the item in advance and organise transportation to the venue. Visitors to the show should use public transport and entry is via Gate 5 in Church Road. Series Editor Simon Shaw says: ‘The team are all looking forward to visiting such an iconic venue as Wimbledon. It’s always exciting to see what will come to light on the day. We regularly see between 1500 and 2000 visitors on the day. Despite the high turnout everyone will get to see an expert.’ More information can be found at: www.bbc.co.uk/ antiquesroadshow

s h d ireRul r o f t r e s e v a es theW H ertfordshire’s very own London 2012 venue, the Lee Valley White Water Centre has already brought thousands of visitors to the area, been hailed “as the best of its type anywhere in the world” and is now less than a year away from making its international debut on the world’s stage. The Centre significantly raised the public profile of London 2012 when it was launched to public acclaim in April this year and continues to bring waves of excitement to the local community

and the thousands who have already used and enjoyed the only London 2012 venue open to the public ahead of the Games. And if that wasn’t enough, the Centre (successfully run and managed by Lee Valley Regional Park Authority) has now been hailed by David Luckes, Head of Sport at London 2012, “as the venue that ticks all the boxes. The feedback from the elite athletes has been amazing. They all say how superb the course is and the general public who have been on it say they have had a fantastic time.”
The Centre has seen thousands of people vying to be some of the first to experience adrenalin pumping white water rafting on the same course that will host five days of intense canoe slalom competition during London 2012. Lizzie Neave, World Cup bronze medalist and member of the GB Canoe Slalom team said “We’re delighted to be able to train at this incredible venue – the team is extremely excited about what we can achieve here on home soil.” The early opening success of Lee Valley White Water Centre (the venue opened to the public in April 2011) can easily be attributed to its many unique features, including not one, but two white water courses! Both courses are pump fed from the lake which is filled from an aquifer, guaranteeing clean white water at all times. The Centre was built with legacy very much in mind. There are two separate courses - a 300m Olympic Standard Competition Course with a 5.5m drop and a 160m Legacy Loop, perfect for training and sports development. The venue, located in Broxbourne, was the first brand new London 2012 venue to be

completed when it was unveiled by the Princess Royal in December 2010. It has since seen over 8,000 members of the public raft the Olympic Standard Competition Course - a year before the Olympians hit the water! Interest in the Centre has been unprecedented with people aged 14 to 86 years old gearing up and taking on the challenge of rafting the Olympic waves. And with 10,000 visitors on opening weekend alone, the Centre has since seen 90,000 visitors head through its doors since April and in the course of an average week the Centre sees 8,500 people visit the only Olympic venue to be open ahead of the Games. Centre Manager Simon Ricketts, is thrilled by the success of the venue saying “We’ve been bowled over by the huge enthusiasm for the Centre since we opened. The feedback we’re getting is fantastic and to have seen the Centre become the only London 2012 venue to have secured a very tangible legacy by winning an international championships to be hosted at the Centre after the Games, is a thrill. Hosting the 2015 Canoe Slalom World Championships here at Lee Valley White Water Centre means the community will continue to benefit from this excellent facility, on Hertfordshire’s soil.” In July the Centre was put through its Olympic paces and passed with flying colours. 175 athletes from 30 countries descended on the centre along with support staff, coaching staff and volunteers and officials running a four day test event, mirroring the actual Canoe Slalom events for next summer’s Olympics. Team GB medal prospect and Athens Canoe Slalom silver medallist Campbell Walsh said at the event “I haven’t heard a single complaint. All the competitors say it’s a terrific course, and pretty hard. Massive respect has to go to some of these foreign guys. It’s their first time here and they’re doing good runs already.” While no British athlete finished in the top three at the recent test event, British European bronze medalist Lizzie Neave was fourth in the women’s K1, while Beijing silver medallist David Florence settled for sixth in the men’s C1. Team GB however, were keen to point out that they were not using the event
for Olympic selection, unlike other nations, and that our team had just returned to the Centre after an intensive period of training. Lee Valley Regional Park Authority has kept the local community in mind at every stage for the long-term development of this venue and its engagement opportunities for Hertfordshire’s communities. In June this year the Authority hosted a six day Schools Festival where young people from across the capital, Essex and Hertfordshire tackled the fast-flowing rapids at Lee Valley White Water Centre, free of charge. Young people from 126 schools experienced a taste of London 2012 as a part of Lee Valley White Water Centre’s Schools Festival. Their skills were put to the test as they rafted the same white water that the world’s best athletes will face next year during five days of intense competition on the Olympic Standard Competition Course. Derrick Ashley, Chairman of Lee Valley Regional Park Authority, said: “The Schools Festival was a fantastic opportunity for the pupils of London, Essex and Hertfordshire. Not only did they have the chance to see a London 2012 venue for themselves, they’ve also experienced the exhilarating Olympic course. “Young people are at the heart of the Authority’s Olympic legacy commitment and the Schools Festival was just the first step in our plans to engage with the community and give pupils across the capital and surrounding regions a real taste for what will be happening on their doorsteps next year.” The Schools Festival was funded entirely by Lee Valley Regional Park Authority and gave over 1500 young people the opportunity to experience the Olympic Games a year before they begin. After the challenging, adrenalin pumping adventure of white water rafting, many find the onsite cafe is the perfect place to relax and refuel with friends. There is an all day menu offering a wide choice of freshly prepared food as well as an extensive choice of refreshments.

he message came from a heavyweight assembly of speakers at a special “Countdown to the Olympics” evening organised by the Hertfordshire Hoteliers Association (HHA) to draw attention to the opportunities presented by the Games. The association represents 24 properties throughout the county and is actively lobbying for more members to join. Chairman Jon Kett-Reynolds said: “The run-up to the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and the events themselves should bring a significant increase in business into Hertfordshire. We are one of the few counties chosen to host Olympic events and now is the time to focus on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. We would like to thank our hotel supply partners whose generosity helped to make this evening such a success. “The association is fully behind this showcase for Britain and our members are very pleased to have this opportunity and are working together to ensure a warm welcome to our county. We are determined all our visitors go away with good memories of Hertfordshire to encourage them and their friends to return many times over the coming years.” Reinforcing Mr Kett-Reynolds’s message at the Countdown evening at the Sopwell House Hotel in St Albans were guest speakers including St Albans MP Anne Main, Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chief Executive Officer Tim Hutchings and Stephen Bromberg, Head of Communications at the Lee Valley Water Centre, our very own Olympic Venue in Hertfordshire”. The evening began with a drinks reception and
included presentations on the opportunities 2012 will bring to the region and was followed by a barbecue in the Sopwell House gardens, accompanied in the Olympic spirit by some medal-winning wines. Sopwell House Hotel was a founder member of the HHA and Phil Cox. General Manager of Sopwell House said, “Hertfordshire is a very attractive county for visitors for both business and pleasure and we have an important role to play as hoteliers to ensure that they enjoy their stay here and return to become regular guests.

The evening concluded with a prize draw of a holiday to Marrakech, given by Hertfordshire Company Marrakech Riads – the proceeds of the draw have been donated to the Hertfordshire Talented Athletes Programme, which strives to help aspiring young athletes realise their full potential, whether they are able bodied or competing with a disability. The HHA would like to thank their supply partners supporting us, the generosity of the following companies is gratefully appreciated: Matthew Clark, Brakes, 3663 and WaverleyTBS. here is an increasing trend for both men and women to seen non-surgical, non-invasive methods for achieving a younger look. There are various options available that fall into this category, including wrinkle relaxing injections such as Botox®, dermal fillers and skin peels, to name just a few. Erika Moore recently visited Sister Kay Greveson at her clinic in Hampstead after becoming increasingly frustrated by her lines and wrinkles. Here she outlines her experience. I work in a job that involves dealing with clients on a daily basis, so my appearance is important. I was increasingly aware of the lines on my forehead and between my eyes. I always felt as though I looked angry, and older than I was, even though I am only in my early 30’s. I approached Sister Kay Greveson her clinic within Aquarius Spa, Hampstead, about two months ago as I had been recommended to her by a friend. I was initially nervous as I have never had any sort of treatment like that before. I was worried about having the injections and what I would look like afterwards but Kay put my mind at ease immediately. We had a detailed chat about what results I wanted from the treatment; she took a medical history and some photographs. Kay explained that Botox® is a safe, naturally occurring protein that works by blocking nerve

She gave me the option of using a ‘numbing’ local anaesthetic cream, which I took. Despite being nervous, I did not find the procedure bad at all. Kay talked me through each step and made sure I was comfortable throughout. She was very gentle and I hardly felt the injections; it certainly wasn’t as bad as I had
imagined. She explained that it would take between 2 and 14 days for the full results to be visible and advised me to come back after this time so she could check on the result and have a ‘dose adjustment’ of treatment if required. It was so exciting to see the lines disappearing little by little each day and I don’t think I’ve ever looked in the mirror so much as I did in those first 2 weeks! In the end I did not need more treatment as I was more than pleased with the results. I have a natural look and still have facial expression but no lines!! Botox® is not permanent, lasting only three to four months, after which, the lines that were there prior to treatment slowly return. I will definitely have it again when the time comes as it has made me feel so much more confident with my appearance. I feel that I look more relaxed and don’t have an ‘angry’ look from frowning all of the time.

Tracey Smyth Tracey Smyth our specialist semi-permanent make-up artist talks to us about brows, eyeliners and lip blushes.
ello People Tracey Smyth here again, How are you all? Well it has been chaotic with the on-set of Summer, every one dashing in to prepare for their up-coming holidays and with the seasons events in full swing, we all need to look our best! To have a brow out of fashion or shape at Ladies Day would be a sin! Getting the best shape of eyebrows for your face can be an insurmountable problem. When I apply semipermanent make-up I always draw the shape on your face first so we can see if it really suits you and to make sure you are happy. With all the celebrity focus and new TV programmes, Made in Chelsea and the likes, the look can get a little convoluted. How do you know who to go to and what shape to choose? The most important piece of advice I can give you is: “Choose your semipermanent expert very very carefully” Here are the top 5 most asked questions by my new and prospective clients. How long Have you been doing semipermanent make-up
I have been doing semipermanent make-up for 20 years. I am constantly updating my qualifications as I believe it is important to remain current and in touch with the latest techniques and equipment. There are many training systems and schools all over the UK now, 48 AUGUST2011
however one interesting point. “As little as 10% of people trained go onto do semi-permanent makeup professionally”. is semi-permanent make-up painful?
I always use a numbing cream which completely de-sensitises the area. One tip is, choose the timing of your procedure as your skin is often more sensitive before
use the hair stroke method. is it tHe same as a tatoo?
No, semi-permanent make-up is more superficial, meaning I do not permeate into the lower area of the skin bed. Also I only use organic ink which does not contain toxins and is a more expensive product. How long does it last?
it is nice to be on-trend However a more important point is tHat tHe sHape really suits your individual look. and during your period. will it look natural?
It depends which procedure you have, there are a few different techniques, for a very natural look. I use a hair stroke procedure which is tiny brush strokes giving a fine hair like finish, air brush is also a very nice finish as it creates a fine shadow, over which I tend to
Semi-permanent make-up last for up to 3 years, although I do suggest a colour boost after 6 months, I do charge a fee for this service, however it will keep your brows looking fresh and boost the depth of colour. I hope that covers some of the nagging questions. Now onto what is on trend this season. I have been doing my
research as ever and have tracked down the sought after Celebrity make-up artist Beth Alderson to ask her what is on-trend this season for brows. Beth say’s: “Big brows this season, my top tip “They must be controlled and defined with crisp edges. Apply a good quality eye brightener under the brow to really make them pop” It can be helpful when you come for your consultation to bring a picture of your dream brow as I can then see what you are hoping for and if that look is achievable. It is nice to be on-trend however a more important point is that the shape really suits your individual look. Here is the list of Celebrities whose brows we love! Kate Middleton Kim Kardasian Keira Knightley J Lo Anyway all this said..... I am looking forward to hearing from some of you. Until next time be lovely and look wonderful. Zumba is a Latin-inspired dance fitness programme created by dancer and choreographer Alberto “Beto” Perez in Colombia during the 1990s. Perez forgot his tape of aerobics music for a class he was teaching. He took the tapes available in his car, consisting of traditional Latin salsa and merengue music, and improvised a class using this non-traditional aerobics music. After the initial success in Colombia, he took the class to the United States in 1999. Zumba involves dance and aerobic elements. Unlike a typical dance class where counts are used, Zumba involves following the music with repetitive movements. Zumba exercises include music with fast and slow rhythms and resistance training for fitness and losing weight. The music comes from the following dance styles: Cumbia, Salsa, Merengue, Mambo, Flamenco, Cha - cha - cha, Reggaeton, Soca, Samba, Belly dancing, Bhangra, Hip hop music, Axé music and Tango. The calories typically burned during a class range from 500 - 1000 and depend on your weight, workout duration and workout intensity, and work muscles you never get to move in a standard fitness class!
The Zumba programme presently offers six types of Zumba classes: ZUMBA This is a combination of aerobic and highenergy Latin and international beats.
ZUMBA GOLD Zumba Gold paces the moves to suit the needs of the active older participant.
This effective and efficient class can be adapted to all fitness levels.
ZUMBA TONING This combines targeted body-sculpting exercises and high-energy cardio work with Latin-infused Zumba moves to create a calorie-torching, strength-training dance fitness party. Students learn how to use lightweight, maraca-like Toning Sticks to tone all their target zones, including arms, abs, glutes and thighs.

oday everyone is so busy and taken with wanting to achieve all that is possible within the shortest amount of time; we forget to actually take care of ourselves. Why not try booking yourself in for a Reiki Treatment; you might be surprised at the effects. What is Reiki?
Reiki pronounced Ray-key is a Japanese word for Universal Life Force Energy. Reiki is an ancient healing system that can be experienced by either ‘hands on’ or by distance (remote) healing. A Reiki treatment encourages physical, mental and emotional healing and spiritual growth. This unique gift of healing is learned by a process of attunements. A person who has been attuned to Reiki has experienced a very ancient technology for fine tuning the physical and spiritual bodies to a higher vibrational level. The individuals energy centre’s (chakras) are also opened up to enable them to channel higher amounts of Reiki energy. Reiki is not a religion or a belief system because it holds no creed or doctrine. Reiki is designed to work whether you believe it or not. Reiki energy is drawn through the practitioner, and the recipient’s body will draw the energy to those parts of the body that require it. Simultaneously the practitioner is also treated whilst giving the treatment. Energy enters through the practitioner and passes out through the hands to the recipient. Reiki healing not only works on a physical level; it can relive pain but also promotes total relaxation and works to restore mental well-being and spiritual equilibrium. After being attuned an individual can also perform self healing, with daily self treatment to encourage the body’s natural healing abilities and reduce stress. the five Reiki PRinciPles Just for today: I wIll not worry

Every situation is a mirror, a direct reflection of cause and effect created by ourselves. Those who cause anger in us are teaching us a lesson about ourselves. Witnessing your weaknesses gives you opportunity to grow. Just for today: I wIll respect my famIly, employers and frIends

We must not try to control nature, but harmonise with nature and show love and respect for all life forms. By practising the five Reiki principles daily and using them continually they will become a habitual part of life and compliment your Reiki treatments. Your participation in your own life healing process is of paramount importance, in order to achieve the perfect balance you must give back for what you receive. What haPPens duRing a tReatment?
Treatments can vary from 30 – 45 minutes and prices vary according to practitioner as do types of Reiki, but the healing element is the same. You will be fully clothed and lying down on a bed akin to a massage. Reiki practitioners often practice ‘hands on’ healing on or around the head area and will channel energy through them to you. However, if you are uncomfortable being touched Reiki is still as effective with the practitioner placing their hands above the area about 6 inches away from the head or body. The practitioner should ask if you are comfortable for them to treat other areas of the body, such as feet, legs and stomach. The practitioner’s hands may be placed lightly over your eyes, sides and underside of your head and/or your neck depending on where they feel you need treatment. During a treatment some people experience nothing whereas others may experience feelings of hot cold, tingling and sometimes even light headed dizziness or seeing colours. However on the most part, people experience a feeling of well-being and deep relaxation. The practitioner should not suggest changes in medication or attempt to diagnose you with any conditions they think you may have. Most people have Reiki treatments, and may even be attuned to study Level 1 and 2 for everyday self treatment and care for family members and/or friends. If you want to move forward with Reiki as a hobby or profession you must do Level Three Master/Teacher. A certified practitioner can be found via The Reiki Association http:// www.reikiassociation.org.uk/ who apply rules, regulations and standards to treatments, as well as offering membership and practitioner insurance.

It’s official, that post-holiday feeling can wear off in as little as seven days. Dutch researcher Jessica de Bloom warned this week the feel-good benefits of a vacation disappear quickly, and unfortunately that tan you worked so hard on may fade just as fast.
With recent research from Superdrug indicating 71% of British women feel more confident with a golden glow, it’s time to encourage an everlasting tan. But fear not, you can go from pale and pasty to post-holiday glow without so much as stepping on a plane. The faux glow is safer, quicker and more dramatic than its sunny sister alternative. Just as well, considering deep, rich-coloured skin, a la Farrah Fawcett, is bang on tan trend. “Whatever the season, the dark ‘retro tan’ always looks good,” says tanning expert James Read. “There are tricks to achieve this look but it’s all about making the skin look glistening, golden and hot. Lotion

products are making a comeback this season as they are the best formula to deliver that darker look.”
Get glowing with our expert guide. PREP PERFECT Dry, dehydrated skin is your self-tan enemy. If you want your look to have staying power, sloughing off dead skin cells is all important. “Exfoliate - this prepares a smooth base for your tan,” advises Sun-Believable tanning guru James Harknett. “A gentle scrub is sufficient to remove dead skin cells and give a good foundation for a tan to cling to.” Plan your tanning session and stay one step ahead with your hair removal. Wax 48 hours or shave 24 hours before tanning to avoid product entering open pores on your legs, which can resemble telltale spots. Moisturiser is both your friend and foe when it comes to tan prep, according to Harknett. “Don’t use a moisturiser all over your body before tanning as it works as a barrier against the dihydroxyacetone or DHA, the tanning agent that reacts with the proteins on our skin,” he says. “But do apply an oil-free moisturiser sparingly to the feet, elbows, cuticles, hands and back of heels, only. Apply a small amount of moisturiser to the base of your palm, using a semi-circular motion. This allows the tan line to naturally fade, so nobody knows you’re faking it.”
HEALTH BEAUTY TAN TACTICS Know your limits when it comes to your faux glow. Work with your natural complexion to achieve a flurry of “have you been away?” compliments rather than self-tan inquisitions. “From my experience you should only ever aim to go two shades darker than your current natural skin tone,” advises Athena Skouvakis, celebrity make-up artist and advisor to Piz Buin. “Opting for darker shades, unfortunately, won’t give you the sleek sun-kissed look that we all adore.” If a tan’s a top priority for you, dedicate time to being a bronzing beauty rather than piling it on as you’re flying out of the door: a recipe for a streaky disaster. Skouvakis says: “A key self-tanning rule is to make sure you don’t rush the application - never mind how much you want to get out and party! “To avoid messy streaks or an uneven shade, you really must take the time to do it properly. Also remember that less is more and you should always be able to build the colour up.” MAINTAIN MODE Keep your fake tan glowing for as long as possible with regular self-tan maintenance. Nobody wants to walk around showing off streaks, patches or premature fading. “For an even tan you need to keep skin sleek, smooth and well hydrated,” says Nichola Joss, St Tropez skin finishing expert. Moisturise twice daily to maintain the longevity of your tan and help your tan fade naturally. Despite the misconception that exfoliation will ‘shed’ a tan, the action of lifting dead cells will keep your colour looking fresh. “Tanning products absorb into several layers of skin - the surface build-up of dead cells is what can make you look dull and orangey,” Joss explains. “Gently exfoliate every two or three days; you’ll still have a tan coming through, but
it’s radiant.” Amp up the volume of your tan for evenings out with a glossy sheen using a shimmer oil on areas that you want to highlight, like shoulders, collarbone, arms and legs. TAN TRUTHS British beauties are obsessed with achieving a gorgeous glow. Superdrug’s research reveals the lengths us ladies go to for self-tanning: The average female will spend as many as 680 hours applying fake tan during her lifetime. Almost a quarter (23%) of women confess to having an unhealthy obsession with looking tanned. More than half (54%) want a noticeable tan like Cheryl Cole or Katie Price. One in 10 women wouldn’t consider going on a night out unless they had applied fake tan. Of the 1,500 men questioned, 23% confess to using fake tan on occasion.

Your gel will last three to four weeks, after which time the new nail growth will start to show and you will need an infill or alternatively you can soak it off and have a fresh set of gels applied. The gel is thin, strong and allows your nails to have the flexibility they need to carry out all your daily duties. SKIN DEEP Skin conditions affect people of all ages - both men and women - and extreme skin problems can have a profound affect on various aspects of everyday life. In this article, I will examine the two main skin conditions that commonly affect both men and women. Although these conditions are treatable, they are not necessarily curable. However, there are some fantastic expert treatments and homecare protocols that will help you to successfully keep them at bay.
to treat the individual symptoms. To reduce redness, I usually recommend a gentle skincare routine using products from the Pevonia RS2 range which is specifically designed to treat Rosacea symptoms using green tea, liquorice and rose oil to calm, soothe, decongest and desensitise the skin. Once the skin is calmed and strengthened, broken capillaries can be reduced with advanced cosmetic procedures that cauterise them, minimising congestion and pustules.
ROSACEA Rosacea is a skin condition that is characterised by its red-faced, acne-like appearance. It is becoming more widespread and is thought to be affected by stress, diet and harsh cosmetic ingredients. It can also be hereditary or caused by environmental conditions such as extreme heat or cold.
Chemical-free, mineral make up, which contains Vitamin K, will not only strengthen broken capillaries with everyday use, but it can also be worn to camouflage the condition and reduce inflammation. Glo Minerals Anti Redness Powder is great for toning down redness and reduces inflammation almost immediately.
The symptoms of Rosacea include high colouring on the cheeks, broken capillaries, small white heads and pustules on the surface of the skin. GPs usually prescribe antibiotics to help relieve some of these symptoms, but they often reoccur when the antibiotics are stopped. In any case, antibiotics can only be prescribed for a limited period of time and do not offer a long term solution to the condition.
For further information on how to manage Rosacea conditions or how to camouflage its appearance with mineral make up, please call for a consultation on 01923 839709.

ACNE Acne is a very common skin condition that affects teenagers from 13 years right up to 20 years old. For most people, acne will have disappeared by their mid-20s but for some people, it can continue to affect the skin until much later on in life.
Acne is caused by inflammation of the sebaceous glands that can be found on the face, chest and sometimes the back. During puberty, the production of androgens increases in both boys and girls and can stimulate the sebaceous glands to produce more sebum. White heads and blackheads occur when the bacteria in the pores becomes inflamed. Severe cases of acne can be treated medically with antibiotics or Roaccutane, a strong Vitamin A based treatment only prescribed by a dermatologist. Mild cases can be treated at home with products containing Benzynoic Peroxide, or in a skin clinic where the skin expert will extract and clean out the pores ensuring no contamination occurs. Too many harsh products will simply dry out the skin and make the condition worse. A mild cleanser and oil-free moisturiser will soon help to improve the condition. Acne scarring can be treated with medical microdermabrasion to reduce blackheads. Severe scars, such as ‘ice pick’ scars, can be treated with Dermaroller - a skin needling treatment that stimulates collagen synthesis to plump up the scars permanently, making them harder to see. If you have teenagers with acne or would like advice on how to deal with the symptoms, we hold regular workshops and consultations. Please call 01923 839709 for more advice.

Crown
e first met our latest client, a Kent property developer, when he called in at our stand at the RHS Chelsea Flower show,” explains Crown Pavilions’ in-house Garden Designer, Carl Hooper. “He explained that he had admired our products for some time - and browsing our website noticed we have our own landscaping company (which, incidentally, was awarded the much coveted Merit Award for Outstanding Presentation),” he adds. “He wanted a beautiful garden complete with spacious gazebo, all of which would reflect the unique character of the main house. All elements had to work together in harmony as well as forming a sumptuous back-drop for relaxing and entertaining. Day or night, winter or summer, rain or shine… he wanted a year-round sanctuary where he could work, rest and play.” Unfortunately ‘sanctuary’ wasn’t the first thing that came to mind when Carl and the design team arrived on site one cold, damp March morning. “We had to clamber across rubble, weeds and rubbish,” he recalls. “The soil was poor and the drainage atrocious. However to our landscapers it was the perfect blank canvas and at the heart of this canvas would be the jewel in the crown: a bespoke 12-seater cedar gazebo with luxury dining, seating and lighting, fully wired for media and internet – an ‘escape’ that could be a haven of relaxation one minute and a glorious pleasure zone the next.” Crown Pavilions and its sister company Crown
62 AUGUST2011
As A property developer you get used to building sites, but when thAt building site is your own ‘gArden’, it’s quite Another mAtter. And when the ‘building’ At the heArt of thAt gArden - the jewel in the crown-to-be - is little more thAn A pile of rubble, you need A speciAl kind of lAndscAper to put it right. Gardens (responsible for the landscaping) aren’t just ‘your average’ landscape designers or gazebo manufacturers. “We’d started life as a manufacturer of high-end gazebos and garden rooms,” Carl explains. “But, increasingly, we were finding people wanted us to handle the landscaping too – after all, when you’re investing in a state-of-theart gazebo you want a setting that does it justice!” So Crown Gardens was born to work in parallel with its sister company - and scores of sumptuous gardens-and-gazebos later, they’ve attracted the attention of some of the world’s most discerning clients – people like Duncan Bannatyne for his Bannatyne Spa Hotel in Hastings and Canadian businesswoman Gabriella Atkinson for her home and riding centre at Bedgebury Park (to be reported in the next edition). “We’ve also created stunning sanctuaries overlooking the Mediterranean where the gazebo is more about sheltering from the heat than the rain or snow,” says Carl.
HOUSE GARDEN But wherever the location, the accent is firmly on creating the perfect haven to relax and entertain, and which requires minimum maintenance. “It’s important that everything - from the smallest exotic shrub to the most intricate cascading rock waterfall, from the plump feather-filled cushions to the siting of the gazebo itself - must work in complete harmony.” But unlike a painting on a canvas, a garden never looks the same. “Not only does it change dramatically according to the season, it must look amazing from every angle.” From the house to the garden room and back again, it’s a 360 degrees 3-dimensional entity that needs to look stunning and serve a multitude of different purposes “whether you’re putting your feet up at the end of the day or welcoming guests to a glittering celebration.” Then there’s the weather to contend with. “Soft furnishings must be fade and insect-resistant for the summer and mould-resistant in the wet season. Structures must be sturdy and low maintenance. Lighting must complement each other. And, of course, you need heat so you can get the most from the garden room all year round.” Inspired by a string of triumphs “which includes the transformation of our property developer client’s ‘building site’ into a breathtaking garden retreat”, Crown is now setting its sight on making clients’ outdoor spaces even more versatile. “These days, people want a garden in which they can do everything,” says Carl “We already have a popular range of gazebos with hot tubs. Now we’re about to introduce a range of bespoke garden offices and outdoor kitchens, vastly extending the scope of how you use your garden.” Contact: Rees Gidley or Barbara Anne Barber Tel 01491 612820. making waves in the swimming pool world O ORIGIN CELEBRATE THIRTY YEARS IN THE SWIM… rigin Leisure has been at the top of the swimming pool industry for thirty years. To celebrate this milestone the company has rebranded their entire look, with a bright new logo, an all-new website, and redesigned vans. But the ethic of the company remains unchanged. They are still adopting their programme of constant improvement, and their products are more adventurous, more imaginatively designed and more perfectly built than ever. Reflecting on the early days, when the company started out life as Leisureland, the directors searched the archives for

photographic evidence of the pool houses they were building in the eighties. Simplicity seemed to be the keyword in those distant days - when a simple pine building housed a small heated swimming pool. In further research they found that the majority of these buildings are still in daily use today, giving new generations the pleasure of swimming at home throughout the year. Many of these early masterpieces have been refurbished by the Origin maintenance team, to bring the look and the pool technology up to date. To celebrate this burst of nostalgia, the directors also gathered a collection of early
advertisements and brochures, and featured them in the Origin summer newsletter NewsWave. Also featured is an article on Britain’s brightest swimming talent Francesca Halsall. Origin is delighted to be one of Fran’s sponsors, especially as she has just clocked a world-leading time in the 100 metres freestyle! Generally the buildings have become bigger, better, far more complex and far more stylish over the years - you can see the evidence of this in the photographs on these pages. Lovely pool houses that are designed to co-ordinate with their surroundings, to actually improve the vista from the owner’s home, and match in
with the materials and fabrics of the existing building. Constancy has been a key feature in Origin’s development. The client always meets a representative at director level, and has the opportunity to discuss his ideas and requirements with someone who has a total understanding of the swimming pool world. The architects and designers are seasoned players in their fields, and bring a wealth of experience to every aspect of this complex and demanding business. Even the teams who build the final pool houses are eminently professional, many having been involved since the very early days of the company.

olar PV has never been more in vogue. Even the fiscally astute Dragons in the den have been wowed by the fantastic investment opportunities presented by this fast growing industry. See “ The dragons den” Sunday 31st July 2011. As more and more domestic home owners take up this wonderful investment and socially green opportunity the industry braces itself for what will surely be an extremely busy 6 months. The tariff was started in April 2010 and the government paper dictated that the tariff would not be altered until April 2012. As April looms ever closer more and more people are joining the Solar revolution whilst the optimum tariff remains available. Industry insiders predict not only will the tariff drop in accordance with the tariff table issued in the Government paper but will have an additional cut applied. This is essentially to bring the tariff back in line with the original return on investment figures of between 8 – 10%. The current reduction in the cost of installation has in some cases pushed up the ROI to as high as 17 – 18%. The fact that the tariff bracket applied when the install is complete is maintained, plus inflation, for the life of the tariff (25 years) means people are keen to sign up now. ounded 20 years ago, The Natural Wood Floor Company is a family run business which has grown to become one of the leading wood flooring manufacturers and suppliers in Europe. Run by three brothers, this is quite an achievement for a company that began life in a shed of a house in Balham. Trading began in 1991 selling reclaimed flooring from demolished buildings in the capital. As the company’s reputation grew, the demand for their products increased. Quick to respond, the company soon moved into manufacturing,
opening up a state-of-theart manufacturing facility in Eastern Europe. Providing supreme craftsmanship and excellent customer service are key to the company’s success. The company’s UK base is located in Smugglers Way, Wandsworth. With over 20,000 square metres of timber in stock, covering 140 different types of flooring, the showroom offers a huge selection of wood flooring to suit a wide range of tastes and budgets. ith the house prices as they are, more families are looking to extend their homes rather than face the expense of moving. One way is to extend your home or add a conservatory. Now you can do this in glass. New technology pioneered by companies like Eagle S G & W Ltd with their product “GlasSpace” means that large sheets of glass can simply be ‘glued’ together using silicone, omitting the need for a supporting plastic or metal structure, Giving you an uninterrupted view in/out, in most cases also suitable for listed buildings. “GlasSpace’s unique system is so versatile you can have anything from a simple glass roof to ambitious multistorey construction designed to integrate different floors of your home, increasingly popular option to bring light and space to basement rooms. Also bear in mind

that the glass panels are set flush with each other giving a flat surface that’s much easier to clean than a traditional conservatory. While the temperature in oldstyle conservatories tend to veer from arctic in winter to tropical in summer, the light, contemporary “glasspaces” constructed meet all the latest heat-efficiency regulations so won’t add to your energy costs. This is thanks to a layer of argon between the two sheets of glass that make up each unit, plus a special thermal coating, you can also add solar-control coating for very sunny places. The company manages the glass construction process from initial survey to final clean and will work in conjunction with your architect & builder. ith every square foot of floor space at a premium within London, basement construction has become the most popular form of home expansion. When you have either expanded to the limits of your property above ground, or have been refused planning for expansion above, a basement is the obvious solution. Maggie Smith of London Basement tells me that it is no longer a second choice for expanding homes, it has become the first choice for home owners and indeed for purchasers of new properties. It is the only way to gain such a large amount of space, indeed, a whole new floor level! London Basement is the original basement company, who have been building basements for over 15 years, who have to date built a remarkable 1000 basements. ell what an interesting month since I last addressed these pages. I’ve had more enquiries from readers than the previous three months put together, which reminded me of the writing load I used to have when I was the ‘Silver Editor’ of an American newspaper called “The Antiques Monthly” and questions with photographs poured in from all over the States. Anyway the recent batch of enquiries was so diverse that thought I would print just a couple for you to illustrate the range of items that people have. The first is one of a pair of vases, each bearing the stamp of Carlton Ware, but the owner could find no further information. The vases are extremely what is known in the trade as - ‘showy’; lots of shape and lots of colour with big classical scenes on the front and back. This was because the Victorians of the late 19th century loved mirrors over their fireplaces, at the back of sideboards and anywhere else they could stand ornaments, and so they had to be decorated on the reverse side as well as the front. This practice did not cease with the end of the century and continued well into the next, when in fact these vases were made. Carlton Ware was one of many products from the company formed by the partnership of Laurence Arthur Birks and Adolphus Joseph Rawlins in the 1890’s, which continued until1932 at the Vine Pottery at Stoke. The company was still

in production in 1957. They made china in addition to their earthenware products the latter of which these vases are a fine example. For something so decorative it is surprising that these wares do not have great commercial value. They were made in vast number and, being available to the masses of middle class families were considered ‘old fashioned’ by the following two generations, and are only just being collected. The name of the country of origin marked on any item will indicate that it was made after 1891 when the ‘McKinley Tariff ’ as it was known was brought in by the future President of The United States of America as an import protectionist measure. The addition of the words ‘Made In’ will indicate after 1904. There are very few rules in the antiques business but that is certainly one of them. Dates inscribed, engraved or carved on antiques can be very difficult to authenticate; the typeface and quality of writing are key factors. It is too complicated to put briefly but a guide rather than a rule is to visit and take note in a cemetery of the dates and lettering on gravestones. It was rarely if ever done to put old-fashioned lettering on a headstone, and of course a date before the lettering was invented would be equally wrong. The forms of decorative borders and frames, particularly around crests,
coats of arms and presentation inscriptions are also indicative of age. The Victorians loved to mix designs and periods when they tried to create revival pieces of an earlier period. But sometimes even this can defeat an old hand like me. A case in point is the slope-top box illustrated. These boxes are often referred to as bible boxes but that more correctly describes a straightforward box with no slope. This is actually a desk, of a type not much referred to before the Tudor period but universally popular by the end of the 17th century when more people could read and write. One early record is in an inventory of Sir William More of Loseley who owned ‘a deske (sic) of chestnut tree’ and ‘another little deske to wryte (sic) on. The latter was valued at 3d by the valuer. Now part of the carving on this desk is a mystery to me. The scrolling designs is common enough and typical of the mid to late 17th century which would tie up nicely with the construction and the iron work and it is good Baltic oak, the stable timber for good solid furniture at the time. But to my knowledge the diagonal lines do not fit to any known pattern in the UK, nor am I sure if they are contemporary. It could be Scandinavian or even more romantically, it could have been done by a sailor on board ship after he had visited some exotic island and picked up some native designs. So I’m stuck on this one and ask

if anyone recognises this pattern, and has the sort of ”Oh I know where that came from” reaction please write and tell me. One of the most interesting pieces of American silver I have ever dealt with came to light after an enquiry from an English reader of ‘The
Antiques Monthly’. It was a large bowl with two cast side handles and a presentation inscription over a coat of arms. It read ”Valentine and Louisa D. Mott”. Back in the 1970’s this meant nothing to me and there was no Google, but the lettering of the inscription
was typical of the 1850’s, so we had an approximate date. Underneath were the stamps ‘Jones,Ball & Co’ ‘Boston’ and most interestingly ‘Pure Silver Coin’. Armed with this I flew to my copy of Encyclopedia of American Silver Manufacturers by the delightfully named Dorothy T. Rainwater. Here I discovered that Jones and Ball registered their mark in 1852 as part of a huge conglomerate with the equally engaging name of ‘Shreve, Crump and Low, Co. Inc. They certainly know how to come up with catchy titles. So now we have date, maker and material. But who were Valentine and Louisa Mott? The shield of the coat of arms was divided in three; in one third was a hand with a scalpel, another was a ribbon around a tube and the last was a crescent. The latter is a device with many meanings but the scalpel was a clue. By now I’m sure the suspense is almost too much to bear so I will cut to the chase and tell you that via The New York Historical Society, Rosary College Library, Chicago and the Milwaukee Museum of Fine Art I found that Valentine Mott was a hugely important American surgeon (1785 – 1865) who performed over one thousand ground-breaking operations including the first successful amputation at the hip. The bowl went on tour from New York to the places just mentioned and now rests on display In the Milwaukee museum. So you never know what might happen when you write to me. I hope someone will re the Desk. John Bly Est Antiques 1891. Tel: 01442 823030 Mobile: 07831 888826. Website: www.johnbly.com Email:john@johnbly.com AUGUST2011

With these dazzling designs and the company’s recently developed technological innovation resulting in the new look Crystal Strata, Swarovski Elements lives up to its exceptional reputation for innovation and craftsmanship. Designed by British wallpaper designer Karen Beauchamp in collaboration with the Swarovski Elements in-house design team, the collection has proved an exciting means of pushing the boundaries and turning design concepts into wallpaper reality. The finest crystal elements manufactured by Swarovski are shown on backgrounds of exquisite flock, mirror-like foil and layered ink giving the effect of metallic leather. Swarovski Elements shimmer as light plays across the wall refracted by the multi-faceted colored crystals, Cabochon pearls and Crystal Strata integrated into the designs. The collection comprises 9 wallpapers embellished with Swarovski Elements and 2 coordinating plain wallpapers. Three of these wallpapers have a fabulous layer of crystals, the Crystal Strata, which subtly changes color creating a refined

To create the lavish crystal-spangled effects of Crystal Strata, dense layers of crystals are applied directly to sections of the designs as the wallpaper is printed for an intense and sparkling effect. In Feather Palace, clouds of flock feathers fall from the sky and the design is interspersed with a single metallic plume every 85 cm whose strands are accentuated by Xilion crystals reflecting light for an intensely luminous effect. Available colours: Mauve Black, Copper, French Grey and Pale Aqua. The scintillating Jewelled Stripe in broad tone on tone velvet flock and metallic crackle is bordered, depending on the color, by a delicious line of pearls or crystals. ritish genius and luxury goods designer Stuart Hughes has yet achieved another amazing and unique product for an anonymous leading Malaysian business man, calling his project “History Supreme“, probably the world’s most expensive yacht, putting Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich’s swanky yacht in the shade. The billionaire’s 533ft Eclipse, which has its own missile defence system and escape submarine, is the world’s biggest private yacht — but at £750million it is a snip compared to this creation. The 100ft super boat took 3 years to complete, with the use of 100 tons of solid gold and platinum to design the deck, dining area, rails, anchor, making the exclusive project absolutely unique. tablespoons of the salted water from the saucepan where you will cook the pasta. Mix and set aside. In a large saucepan, cook the pasta in the salted boiling water until al dente. “To get the al dente perfect bite, cook the pasta 1 minute less then instructed on the packet”. Once the pasta is cooked, drain and tip back into the same pan where you cooked it. Pour over the chilli and garlic oil and, on a medium heat, stir all together for 30 seconds allowing the flavours to combine. Serve immediately without any kind of cheese sprinkled on top.
