Welcome to our September issue... Runners and walkers are signing up in their hundreds for the Herts 10K on 13 October 2013 at Rothamsted Research, Harpenden. Following on from last year’s sell-out event organisers have seen a huge surge in demand for places. The Herts 10K route takes people through the beautiful countryside around Rothamsted Research and includes a mix of cross country and roads. The event is open to runners of all abilities and walkers, and for many it will be the first time they take part in an organised run. The start and finish area at Rothamsted provides ample space for spectators to cheer on the runners as they cross the line. On the day there will be bouncy castles and refreshments and massages available for the runners. The Hertfordshire Wine School is an independent wine education company offering wine tasting for everyone. They are not tied to any wine merchant or retailer and offer impartial advice, tasting only wines that they believe are good examples of their type. We learn about wine by concentrating on the flavours and aromas of the wines. We look at the wine’s taste profile and understand the characteristics of the grape variety, the climate and the winemaking style. As we do not sell wine we can advise where to buy the best wines locally and at the best prices. We work closely with local independent wine merchants to bring you the best tasting and most interesting wines currently available. Our evening tastings and courses are held in Harpenden, St Albans and Hertford and include a minimum of six wines. Every few weeks on Saturdays we run a daytime tasting at Darcy’s Restaurant in St Albans, which includes Champagne, a three-course lunch and a taste of ten different wines. The 2013 Brocket Hall Golf Club Pro-Am will take place on Monday 23rd September on the prestigious Palmerston course, one of the finest and most beautiful courses in the country. Joining the event will be European Tour golfer Simon Khan along with a host of professional golfers for members to meet and play with.

This gives you just a small taste of exciting events & articles featured in this month’s issue...

Captain’s Charity Pro-Am Digital Appeal for Disabled Children This year, Scope patron and Brocket Hall Golf Club Captain Richard Bradbury CBE, will be hosting the 2013 Pro-Am to support Scope’s Meldreth Manor School and Orchard Manor Transition Service Digital Technology Appeal for disabled children and young people.

T

he 2013 Brocket Hall Golf Club Pro-Am will take place on Monday 23rd September on the prestigious Palmerston course, one of the finest and most beautiful courses in the country. Joining the event will be European Tour golfer Simon Khan along with a host of professional golfers for members to meet and play with.

Meldreth Manor School, situated on the Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire border in the village of Meldreth, is one of Scope’s three schools supporting disabled children and young people with complex needs. The school combines a range of education, social activities and residential care for pupils who come to learn, live and get the most out of life. Despite the complexity of their medical needs, the ambition and the potential of the pupils should not be in doubt. The children and young people are full of life, fun loving and eager to learn. As well as the school, the Meldreth Manor site is h ome to Scope’s Orchard Manor Transition Service, which supports disabled people aged 18 - 26 to enhance their social and independent living skills in preparation for adult life. Technology such as phones, tablets, laptops and home computers has, over the years, changed our lives, but for a disabled person with complex needs the impact can be much greater. Items like these are portable, affordable and don’t carry the stigma of bulky, specialist devices. Furthermore, tablets are a mass-market affordable technology and when paired with the low price of apps and software these items have the potential to significantly enhance the lives of disabled people for a portion of the usual cost. Historically, specialist technology for individuals with complex needs has been very expensive and hard to update. However, mainstream devices are increasingly becoming more accessible and affordable with the capacity to be used by disabled people for a range of everyday purposes – including as

a voice output communication aid, as a means for accessing the curriculum and as a route to socialising and networking with friends. Brocket Hall Golf Club’s Pro-Am aims to raise over £50,000 for Meldreth Manor and Orchard Manor. This funding will be used to purchase essential technology for Scope’s students and to upgrade the IT infrastructure at the school site to ensure it can embrace and enable this technology to be accessible and reach its full capacity. Jamie, a student at Meldreth Manor School, has no verbal speech; he communicates through gesture and body language. In the past, telephone calls to his mum and dad have left Jamie really frustrated, anxious and upset as he struggled to be understood. However, now Jamie uses apps like Face Time and photo sharing tools on his iPad to share his day with the people who are important to him. Jamie’s mum explains ‘using a phone meant that communication with Jamie was limited as we could only hear him make the noise for ‘yes’ – but so much of Jamie’s communication is through beaming smiles and his body language. It is a big thing being able to see Jamie via the iPad and know that he is happy’. The Brocket Hall Digital Appeal wants more students like Jamie to have the chance to access technology that gives them the opportunity to socialise with friends, stay in touch with the people most important to them, make day-to-day choices and share experiences whenever and wherever they like. Creature Comforts How you can add warmth to your home

s the evenings close in and the temperatures begin to fall, our attentions are invariably drawn to planning for the cold spell ahead. You might look to wrap up in extra-thick clothing, crack open the brandy, or even get away from it all with a holiday! But have you considered how you can maximise the warmth your home generates?

A

1A lways buy what you love. Art is very personal and like your hairstyle, the clothes you wear and the music you listen to says something about you as an individual. Don’t feel the pressure to follow the crowd. If you ‘don’t get’ abstracts, or florals are ‘not your thing’ that’s perfectly acceptable – there are plenty of alternative styles to explore.

The autumn months mark a period when we spend an increased amount of time indoors. Therefore the benefits associated with creating the right atmosphere in ones home, office or workspaces are potentially huge. Developing the right balance is not always easy, but there are some simple tips that may assist along the way:

2 C hoose art that embodies something you admire. Look for pieces that remind you of something wonderful which may be from you past, or indeed an aspiration for the future. Having an affinity with the subject matter or style will ensure you gain maximum pleasure from admiring it.

3 C onsider how you intend to use your rooms This may seem self evident, but not always so. Many rooms are becoming multipurpose. For example, the trend for working from home has meant workspaces are spilling over into lounges and kitchens. This can often create conflict between the prevailing styles. Consider the mood of the space. Do you want to feel relaxed and chilled, or energised and inspired? 4 Identify the artwork before you decorate Imagine the scene – you have painted the walls, sourced your furnishings and have just seen the perfect painting, but it contains the wrong shade of red, and clashes with the cushions! There can be nothing more frustrating. With thousands of paint options available, it is far easier to select a colour that perfectly compliments the painting, and which draws out the best features of the work.

Hampstead Arts Festival is proud to announce its 2013 music programme 29th SEPTEMBER - 3rd DECEMBER 2013

L

The Hampstead Arts Festival will host some of the finest musicians in the world performing in two wonderful Hampstead venues.

aunched in 2012 to replace the former Hampstead & Highgate Festival, the Hampstead Arts Festival (HAF) has already forged a reputation for presenting outstanding musicians and programmes. Whilst retaining the local knowledge and connections of the festival it replaced, HAF has new trustees, new artistic direction, a fresh focus and an exciting and ambitious programme for autumn 2013. One of the highlights of this year’s programme is a performance of Zemlinsky’s String Quartet cycle by the internationally acclaimed Brodsky Quartet. The work, rarely heard in its entirety, will be performed in a series of concerts pairing Zemlinsky with quartets by old masters: Beethoven, Brahms, Schubert and Mozart. Another highlight will be a performance of Bach’s complete Sonatas & Partitas for unaccompanied violin by the young American rising star, Tai Murray. HAF is also delighted to welcome a string ensemble from the outstanding North York Moors Festival (NYMF), including Brit award winning violinist Jack Liebeck, NYMF founder and director Jamie Walton and celebrated cellist Guy Johnston. The chamber group will perform Richard Strauss’s Metamorphosen, Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence and Schoenberg’s Verklarte Nacht. The festival will be capped by two wonderful recitals by young British superstars. The soprano Sophie Bevan, one of the most sought-after names in classical music at the moment, will take a break from the great opera stages to make a rare appearance singing lieder. Sophie will be accompanied by pianist Sebastian Wybrew. Jazz pianist extraordinaire Gwilym Simcock, in a joint production with the London Jazz Festival, will be making his only solo recital appearance of the London season. The Festival trustees aim to draw on a strong tradition of the Arts in North London, competing with some of the most renowned music festivals and

18 SEPTEMBER2013

venues in the UK, yet giving a fresh and unique perspective to their events. Venues for this year’s concerts are the lovely 18th century Hampstead Parish Church, the scene of historic recordings by the Amadeus Quartet, and the spectacular Grade 1 listed St Stephen’s on Haverstock Hill, recently unveiled after a multi-million pound restoration. The Music Director of Hampstead Arts Festival, Eric Usadi, began his adult life as a violinist after studying at The Juilliard School and Manhattan School of Music, before spending 25 years as a research physicist. Now a trustee of the festival, Eric says of the programming: ‘Some of the finest musicians in the world will be performing a unique blend of repertoire to be heard nowhere else in London this season, presented in two of Hampstead’s crown jewel venues. We look forward to welcoming avid music lovers from both Hampstead and elsewhere in the city.’ He is joined by Jesper Groenvold, a retired business executive who focuses on the Arts through his activities in the charitable sector and collection of art. Jesper discusses the Festival as ‘a relative newcomer, excited to present this program, which brings the quality of the major London music spaces to NW London, while allowing the musicians the freedom to be more adventurous in their programming. We hope to build on the success of last year and increase our core audience.’ Hampstead Arts Festival will also host a series of discussions with leading figures in the arts and politics. Stay tuned for the public announcement of this series shortly. With a diverse, unique and attractive programme, internationally admired musicians and a continually strengthening local profile, this year’s Hampstead Arts Festival promises to be very eagerly anticipated. www.hampsteadartsfestival.com

is your income suffering from record-low interest rates? Wealth management specialist david gibson explores your options.

i

ncome is important. it’s an obvious statement. the difficulty is that, in an uncertain world, investment income is hard to find right now. investors looking for income have faced an increasing challenge ever since the financial crisis broke in 2008. Prudence and vigilance became the order of the day as financial institutions across the globe took extreme measures to protect themselves from global meltdown. Central governments across the world also reacted strongly, forcing interest rates to record lows. four years on and interest rates in the uK remain almost non-existent. the result is real losses for savers in bank and building society deposits which fail to match inflation. investors wanting to secure a better level of income have realised that they must look beyond traditional cash deposits. History shows that investing in equities, or shares, has provided investors with a better chance of outpacing inflation over the long term versus other asset classes, particularly if the shares are able to increase the dividend payments year after year. Positively, there are indications that the recent trend of increasing dividend payments could be sustainable. With dividend payouts on the turn, the outlook for equity income funds could also be on the up. equity income funds have a strong track record for delivering attractive, sustainable income and steady returns over the long term. But it is worth remembering that not all equity income

funds are the same. some are better for income, while others provide better prospects for total return investors through the reinvestment of income. st. James’s Place offers a range of equity income funds managed by investment managers with complementary styles. Corporate bond funds which are, by their nature income producers, remain popular particularly with relatively cautious investors. At st. James’s Place we firmly subscribe to the view that a diversified fixed interest strategy with exposure to investment grade, sub-investment grade and senior secured debt will help position your portfolio to benefit from possible growth across the credit spectrum. Commercial property felt the full effects of the credit crunch and the fall in property values left many investors nursing significant losses. But again, history suggests that commercial property has a place in a portfolio for income investors. its long-term track record is strong and, importantly, it offers returns that are lowly correlated to other asset classes. investors should however note that investing in real asset classes (equities, corporate bonds and commercial property) does not provide the security of capital which is characteristic of a deposit account with a bank or building society. the value of capital, and income from it, can fall as well as rise and you may not get back the original amount invested. those investing for income need to remember that no one asset class is the panacea. With

David Gibson Wealth Management are based locally and are inviting Harpenden Life Magazine readers to discuss their concerns and discover the opportunities that are available. investing for income surgeries are being held, strictly by appointment only, on tuesday 1st October, Wednesday 6th november and friday 6th december at the Luton Hoo Hotel golf & spa. surgeries will be held from 10am til 6pm, and will last approximately 40 minutes. they are held in the strictest confidence without obligation.

Call 07769 225982 for more information or your complimentary guide to wealth management. interest rates likely to remain low for some time to come, a well-diversified, well-managed portfolio which blends a range of asset classes remains the most suitable strategy for investors to satisfy their longer-term income needs. at st. James’s Place we believe that our ability to tailor solutions to an individual’s needs and attitude to risk means your income investments are in good hands. the value of an investment with st. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds you select and the value can therefore go down as well as up. You may get back less than you invested.

2013 Vintage clothing and accessories seem to be getting more and more popular by the day. From little vintage shops to stadium-sized kilo vintage fairs, the proliferation of suppliers means that finding a perfect vintage piece can be a daunting task.

H

ours, days or even weeks of rummaging through piles of old, musty, moth-bitten garments or endlessly searching ebay and clicking through hundreds of Etsy startups mean that vintage shopping is, well, hard work. And yet, finding a beautiful vintage dress with a story to tell is one of the most rewarding shopping experiences. Did she wear it on a first date? How long did it take her to save for it? Did she fall in love with it like I did? All rather romantic ideas, admittedly. Just as a beautiful vintage dress has a story to tell, so too does vintage jewellery – and arguably more so. Very few things are more sentimental to woman than a beautiful piece of jewellery, often given as a gift by someone special or as a token of love. Yet, quality examples of genuine vintage jewellery can be surprisingly difficult to find both on the high street and online. So obvious that it is easy to miss, auction houses offer the perfect solution to the difficulty one may encounter in the hunt for the perfect vintage piece of jewellery. With hundreds of items that have been beautifully photographed and verified by specialists, it would be virtually impossible to not find something to fall in love with in one of Fellows Vintage Jewellery & Accessories auctions. Taking place six times per year, this auction offers gorgeous pieces from the 18th century onwards. The best part - you don’t even have to leave the comfort of your living

room as all of Fellows auctions are available to view and bid online. You also don’t have to worry about bidding on an item and then opening the parcel to find something unexpected. All of the items have detailed condition reports – if the report says you are bidding on a slightly worn Victorian ring, then that will be exactly what you receive. Shakudo, cameos, French jet, agate, lockets, paste, as well as an impressive selection of Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian are just some of the styles of jewellery on offer. You’ll also find designer jewellery and accessories from more modern designers such as Christian Dior, Louis Vuitton and Tiffany & Co. Novelties and hair accessories also feature, as well as vintage furs, shoes and bags. So the next time you feel like updating your wardrobe with a vintage twist, forget a fight-to-the-death for the best picks at a packed vintage fair or and rummage through a sporadically-stocked vintage shop, visit www.fellows.co.uk and browse the huge catalogue from the comfort of your own home. Serving the Good Stuff

T

he White Horse, Harpenden, is nestled on the edge of the town of Harpenden, conveniently close to the M1 and M25. A wonderful old building, the care and love put in to the inside is clear to see. A light, comfortable restaurant; a cozy, warm snug area and of course an inviting bar, with a great fireplace and a fine selection of beers, wine and spirits. The White Horse was recently included in the prestigious Good Pub Guide – testimony to their efforts to continually serve the best products. Their dining area provides seating for up to sixty guests and the talented kitchen team are proud to serve food fresh produce, all firmly part of their dedication to provenance and sustainability. All their poultry is free range, their beef is from Aubrey Allen (supplier to the queen)…and they even source some game products from locals! The food is gastropub in it’s approach – offering something for everyone. From the classic pub meal, to a more innovative and creative approach. Offering a fixed price menu at lunch, in addition to their generous a la carte offering, the White Horse prides itself on allowing chefs to express themselves further with a daily array of specials, which constantly change. The end product is a modern, British gastropub with an emphasis on provenance and, as they will tell you, ‘Serving the Good Stuff.’ A new wine list is set to feature, offering guests anything from Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, to great Saint-Emilion Grand Crus. As the pub continues to evolve and grow, this is another example of a business keeping with consumer demand and offering truly exceptional produce at good value prices.

24 SEPTEMBER2013

The staff are friendly, enthusiastic and well trained. A warm welcome awaits, with knowledgeable, professional service that seems to understand the clientele. Although known for their lovely outdoor garden, this will definitely be a great winter pub – imagine a glass of mulled wine and some delicious homemade food (try the upcoming sausage cassoulet) by the fire!! They say they are taking bookings already – so getting in soon is a must! Just ask for Kate or Joe and you’ll be sure to be well looked after. Their Ultimate Christmas Party package, at £35 per head gives guests a great value package – a delicious 3 course meal, Prosecco on arrival, tea or coffee, Roses chocolates and some fun Santa hats! Why Art A Level is good for your child’s career prospects

T

BY CHRIS OTLEY HEAD OF ART, MERCHANT TAYLORS’ SCHOOL

oday’s students face intense competition for places at the top institutions. University education is also expensive; and 46 applicants for each graduate job advertised. Given this situation, the perennial parental question - ‘why should my child study Art & Design at A-level?’ - seems unlikely to disappear any time soon.

The Russell Group of top UK universities was no doubt well-intentioned in publishing its list of ‘facilitating’ subjects in 2011. It defined these as those most frequently required by Admissions departments and therefore most likely to offer a range of routes into Higher Education. However, given media and government concerns about falling standards, pupils and parents worried all-too-often that subjects not on the list were second class ‘soft options’, rather than simply more specialist, vocational, or practical (Economics, for instance, did not make the list). The popular perception of Art & Design as merely a relaxing and enjoyable alternative to academic study endured, and with it, the related assumption that to study the Creative Arts at university level is to take an enormous gamble with one’s career chances. The reality of the situation, however, is that a rapidly diversifying range of undergraduate courses are out there, which lead to very viable creative careers. Architecture and Product Design are obvious popular examples, but many of our former pupils can now also be found working in advertising, branding, fashion, vehicle design, graphics, publishing and illustration. Prospective Art & Design undergraduates should not be naïve though: just as with any other subject, there are good and bad courses, and the fact remains that graduate employment rates are indeed somewhat lower than in other subject areas. Choosing the right university is critical. It comes as a surprise to many to learn that the best creative courses attract Oxbridge levels of competition – the one-year pre-degree Foundation Course at Kingston attracts well over 1000 applicants for approximately 90 places each year. A further complication is that many of the most-respected specialist courses are not necessarily found at the most famous institutions. Want to study Vehicle Design? Coventry and Northumbria both remain clear world-leaders. Interested in animation? Bournemouth University is a major specialist. Good research coupled with up to date advice from schools is vital. There is also a growing trend of graduates from other disciplines joining

creative industries, having first developed their creative skills while still at school. Recently, we took a group of pupils to visit renowned post-production/ special FX company ‘The Mill’, who were keen to highlight the creative skills shortage they face in the UK. While they of course recruit from specialist graphics degrees, their dream job applicant might have studied Art, Maths and Physics at A-level, before undertaking a ‘good degree from a good university’, maintaining their practical art skills alongside – we were led around the agency by a history graduate, and a chemist. The unfortunate tendency of some schools to pigeonhole pupils into either the Arts or Sciences at an early age is out-of-kilter with the increasingly fluid and collaborative approach of the workplace, particularly in this rapidly developing sector. Art & Design has the potential to positively affect the quality and circumstances of peoples’ lives, from a vocational viewpoint or indeed from the perspective of recreation. An understanding of the human impulse to express and create, and the satisfying of this urge ought to be seen as fundamental to the development of children. At their best, schools should view Art & Design as an important and integral means through which they can educate. Art is concerned with visual communication and the making of imagery in response to human experiences, and so it can be a major tool through which we learn to measure the world around us, by making judgements concerning issues and relationships, no matter how straightforward, abstract or esoteric they might be. In my own department, I am delighted that there are usually as many pupils who see Art as their ‘first-choice’ A-level as there are those who see it as their third or fourth; some of our strongest artists have gone on to read Medicine, Law or Engineering. Pupils should be encouraged to find common ground in Art & Design with all their other subjects; in learning how to research context, develop an idea, make their own judgements, resolve problems, work collaboratively, and develop their own personal interpretations and outcomes around a theme or idea. A-level Art offers pupils the chance to develop and prove their visual literacy. Coupled with a strong package of other subjects, this ability to decipher and exploit images can really make them stand out from the competition in the multi-media workspaces of an increasingly visual world.

Why choose an independent sixth form college?

O

WORDS JAMES WARDROBE

ver recent years independent VI Form colleges have established themselves as very reliable and successful providers of preuniversity education. Most of the best colleges are members of the Council for Independent Education (CIFE). CIFE, founded in 1972, is a national association whose colleges are spread widely over the country, each one offering individual features but all subject to high standards of accreditation. Details of each college can be found at www.cife.org.uk These colleges offer: a major advantage of independent VI Form colleges over a school’s sixth form lies in the wider range of choice of subjects and much greater flexibility of subject combinations. Most colleges allow you to pick virtually any combination of subjects and there are commonly over forty different AS and A level subjects to choose from. Different types and lengths of A level course are also available. If you want to join a college for the second year of A level, not only will you find many colleges which can provide the right A2 courses, but most will allow you to combine A2 courses with a new AS level or even a subject in which you cover both the AS and A2 during the year. So, apart from the variety of subjects, you will find standard two-year courses, final-year (ie second year) courses, one-year courses (covering AS and A2 modules) and retake courses (both one term and one-year). GCSE courses are also offered at all colleges. Intensive Easter Revision courses at both A level and GCSE are available at many colleges.

4 SEPTEMBER2013

Teaching The best colleges, including all CIFE colleges, have experienced and enthusiastic teachers who are A level subject specialists. They are familiar with all the requirements of the various examination boards and are often examiners for the syllabuses they teach. They often have the advantage of being able to specialise in their subject at a particular level for a particular exam syllabus throughout their whole teaching timetable, unburdened by any lower school teaching requirements. Independent VI Form colleges offer small group teaching, usually with a maximum of 8 students per class. The informal, relaxed nature of the smallgroup environment enables the teacher to establish quickly and maintain a very productive and beneficial working relationship with you, with close supervision of your work and plenty of individual attention, encouragement and advice. Entrance Academic and pastoral support is a high priority for these colleges. Their academic advisors keep up-to-date on the latest requirements of the university admissions departments and will make sure that you receive plenty of support in completing your UCAS form as effectively as possible. Some colleges run very sophisticated and targeted programmes of support for students applying for the most challenging university courses, e.g. Medicine. t has been another year of celebrations for staff and students at Aldenham School which kicked off with the opening of a new Sixth Form Centre and major extension to the existing Music School in September. This magnificent new building provides state of the art equipment and facilities for both recreation and study, with students benefitting from new Music Technology and Psychology classrooms and the whole school and wider community enjoying meetings in the oak beamed Apthorp Room as well as concerts in the Recital Room. Celebrations were also the order of the day following an all-school

inspection in November, having gained the top ISI grade - excellent - in every single category. This followed an integrated inspection of both the Senior and the Prep School by the Independent Schools Inspectorate which commended both areas of the School for enabling pupils to reach their full potential in all aspects of their lives. The year was rounded off by a celebration of over 30 years of girls at Aldenham when ‘old girls’ returned to the school for a reunion. The first girls joined the Sixth Form in 1980 and the school is now fully coeducational, with girls and boys alike enjoying the benefits of this vibrant, friendly and highly successful learning environment.

Courage, Courtesy and Compassion

St Columba’s College provides a seamless education in an inspiring and challenging environment where boys from the age of four to 18 years old aspire to achieve their own best standard.

A

Catholic school, St Columba’s is open to boys of wide variety of religious traditions, with learning underpinned by the Columban code of Courage, Courtesy and Compassion. While striving for academic excellence the College realises that it is whole-person education that best prepares boys for the world, recognising that moral and spiritual qualities are essential in achieving roundness of character. In addition to the curriculum, there is an extensive Extra and Extended Curriculum ranging from the Duke of Edinburgh Award and the Combined Cadet Force to Young Enterprise. These activities develop qualities of selfknowledge, teamwork, leadership and resilience. The College regularly wins trophies for rugby, athletics, basketball and other sports. There is a strong tradition of music, drama and public speaking with regular concerts and drama productions. Debating is very strong and, in February, the College again won the county final of the ESU Mace.

The school’s strength lies in the combination of high expectations, a culture of mutual respect and care, creating a stimulating happy environment in which boys thrive and learn, building firm foundations for confident socially-skilled pupils. The community is vibrant and the students are the best evidence of what a Columban education can produce. Most of the Prep boys progress naturally to the Senior School. Academic performance is good, with boys winning scholarships every year; all are challenged from the earliest stages to ‘achieve their own best standard’. There is a high teacher to pupil ratio, and teaching assistants help throughout the school. The College is proud of its strong reputation for pastoral care and both the Prep and Senior Schools have a well-developed house system, forging positive relationships and encouraging healthy competition. WHAT CAN I DO TO PREPARE MY CHILD FOR SCHOOL? WORDS BY HELEN DALKIN MRS DALKIN IS ASSISTANT HEAD, BEECHWOOD PARK SCHOOL AND HEAD OF ITS JUNIOR DEPARTMENT

“How can I prepare my child for school?” A question I am regularly asked by parents. As the Head of a Pre-prep, parents are expecting my response to be firmly centred on academic preparation and are surprised when I advise them ‘play with your child’. ‘Playing with our children’ has almost become outmoded in our busy 21st century lives, and it is frequently outsourced to either schools or to clubs. Yet it is from our parents that we learn about our family’s core values and upon parents that a child bases its behaviours. Playing with our children models such behaviours as turn-taking, social interaction, it develops language skills (listening and speaking), it helps to develop a child’s self-esteem and also its emotional and social responses. Children learn how their behaviour impacts upon others. Playing with our children ultimately shapes the adult which they become. Children are growing up in an age where electronic media is displacing parenting; it is easy to find an ‘app’ which teaches a child number sequencing in a lively, fast moving,’ light and sound show’, rather than to have to battle with inanimate pieces of jigsaw; the boredom of a tediously long car journey is much easier with the in-car DVD rather than monotonous games of ‘I spy’. Children sleep in technology-rich bedrooms and our homes, cars and pockets are filled with smartphones, computers, TVs etc. As adults we have to embrace the technology around us and allow our children to do likewise, as this is part of the growing child’s world, but we must not negate the unique position which every parent has in shaping their child’s development. Parents in the UK work longer hours than they have ever done. The age of parenting now commences far later than it did 20 years ago, and mothers are having their ‘first born’ at an older age too. As parents our lives have moved on from those of our parents, but the needs of a child have remained the same; they have not changed. Children still require authoritative parents, who apply discipline with consistency, alongside being warm, loving, receptive care-givers. Thus resulting in children having greater self-esteem and self-discipline, something which 8 SEPTEMBER2013

‘the media’ constantly reminds us is lacking in the youth of today. It is all too easy to compensate the ‘guilt’ which we feel for spending insufficient time with our children, by allowing them to continue watching the TV or enjoy a computer game rather than entering into the exhausting battle of sticking to rules and boundaries; yet these provide children with security. As parents we have the responsibility of allowing our children access to electronic media whilst preventing its misuse. We need to: Reduce exposure time Set limits Review access and availability. E nsure that our interaction with electronic media provides a good role model to our children. If we restrict the time children have access to electronic media, then time will be created to play with our children. Time in which parents and children can share simple games (promoting number skills, turn taking, developing the emotions of winning and losing), learning to ride a bike or kick a ball, (co-ordination) participating in role play scenarios – such as shops or hospitals (developing conversation and listening skills, problem-solving and emotional interaction/reaction). The list goes on. This is the preparation which children need before they enter the primary classroom. Increasingly children are finding playtimes more difficult because they have not learnt how to create ‘make believe play’, or how to interact with others. They have grown used to flicking from one ‘app’ to another; at school we need them to maintain their level of application. And sadly, because children are spending more time with electronic media and less time playing with adults, they are less used to reading the emotional signals of others, thus resulting in children having a greater tendency to offer an inappropriate response. It is through play that children learn. Give your child the best start to their formal education by ensuring that your child has had the opportunity to play with you.

The Value of Taking Risks

S

WORDS DR MARY SHORT, HEADMISTRESS, ST. HELEN’S SCHOOL

chools have a responsibility to ensure that pupils enter the adult world equipped not only with the very best academic results but also with the skills and attributes that will be equally as important to them in the workplace and that will provide them with the structure which will support them through the trials and triumphs of adult life. Amongst these is the willingness to take risks and to move beyond their comfort zones. It is this ability to view new challenges as exciting and an opportunity to find out what we can do that enables us to achieve so much more than simply gaining good exam results. The process of becoming an outstanding student does not happen by magic; it happens through hard work, meeting deadlines, listening carefully and preparing thoroughly. By doing these things, all pupils can reach their full potential academically. However, they can achieve so much more than this if they wish to and are encouraged to do so by creative and intellectually ambitious teachers, and this can see children becoming the individuals who at the moment neither they nor their parents and friends can even imagine. Schools can encourage pupils to do this by creating an environment in which students can throw themselves into school life, not just focusing on the activities that take place in the classroom. We should encourage them to take up a sport they do not yet know, go to a lunchtime club to try a new activity and to meet new people, join a team, contribute to group work by becoming the leader or the spokeswoman, volunteer to help with school activities and support others in whatever they are trying to achieve. At St. Helen’s, students have access to a rich and varied extra-curricular programme which enables all girls to pursue their individual talents and interests and to discover new ones, whether they be musical, dramatic, artistic or sporting. Girls are encouraged to work hard but also to play hard,

whether that is through the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, the Combined Cadet Force (operated jointly with Merchant Taylors’ School), debating competitions, running a club or taking on a position of responsibility such as Prefect in the Sixth Form. It is these activities that develop the skills that are needed alongside academic results to achieve success in the modern workplace – those skills such as being able to think independently, to ask questions, to be creative and to work in a team alongside other people as well as to lead and inspire others. In the Sixth Form, the development of these skills and the numerous activities that the girls get involved with are recognised through our enrichment programme, culminating in the St. Helen’s Portfolio, which documents all that Sixth Form students achieve through involvement in extra-curricular activities, contribution to the school and wider community, and participation in enrichment activities that are offered through the curriculum, such as attendance at lectures, language qualifications, Open University courses and the Extended Project Qualification. Much of what will set these students apart when they leave school is the way in which they have responded to the risks that they have taken, both intellectually and outside their academic studies, which will prepare them for the challenges of the adult world. By definition, risks can be hard to take but, if we do not take risks, such as answering questions that we find difficult, learning a new language or taking on a new activity, we never find out what we can do and what we are capable of. At St. Helen’s, staff encourage pupils to think outside the box, to ask awkward and difficult questions and to sometimes say, ‘I don’t know...but I think I know where to find the answer’. None of us knows what we can do if we do not try and it is important that schools provide a safe and supportive environment in which pupils can begin to take these risks. SEPTEMBER2013 11

A wonderful start

T

he start of school is a big step in a child’s life and also in that of its parents. There is much debate about when is the right age to start being taught, but here at Westbrook Hay we feel that it is obvious; it is when the child is ready. Children can come to us in the term in which they turn 3, some will come from nurseries, others straight from home, while some will choose to remain at the local nursery and join us in Reception, when full time school begins. In our purpose-built Lower School, children benefit from a secure setting, with its own playgrounds, and advantageous teacher: pupil ratios. The aim is to provide a gentle start to life here, building on children’s existing skills. After two years or so in our Nursery, children move to Reception and this is the stage at which we see most children make the break through to literacy and numeracy. One of the aspects that most appeals here is that the curriculum that

underpins all the learning in the Nursery is delivered through children playing while they are learning. The subtlety involved requires skilled planning and delivery, but does mean that children largely remain blissfully unaware that they are being taught at this early stage. The setting has to be exciting for children, sustaining their interest and one that offers sufficient variety to make every day an enjoyable challenge. Give a child the opportunity to discover that the 10 coloured blocks they have can be sorted into a variety of groups and then built into a three-dimensional shape and the seeds of mathematical knowledge are sown in a practical manner, which has to be better than sitting there barking out the rote order of numbers in a robotic fashion that demonstrates little of value. The modern child expects to be engaged by what they are doing and here at Westbrook Hay we believe that we provide children with the best start to their learning journey. Why not book a visit to see for yourself what we have to offer.

Academic excellence from individual attention at Fine Arts College, Hampstead

F

ine Arts College is an independent sixth form college specialising in arts and humanities subjects at A level. It also offers a one-year GCSE programme in a range of subjects in Year 11 and a one-year Portfolio Course for students preparing for art school entry after A levels.

The Ofsted inspection in 2012 rated the College ‘outstanding’ in all aspects.

The College has around 150 students in total, which allows for small class sizes and a lot of individual attention. It prides itself on having a nurturing and co-operative atmosphere in which all the students are individually known and their progress monitored. A system of personal tutorials and internal reports means that students have a weekly opportunity to talk to a personal tutor about their work and any difficulties they may be having. The College was founded in 1978 by the present joint Principals, Nicholas Cochrane and Candida Cave, and aims to provide an opportunity to study in a mature and stimulating atmosphere that is a unique bridge between school and university. Virtually all students move on to higher education at a range of universities and art, music or drama schools. The College buildings are in Belsize Park, with the main site in a sunny

but secluded courtyard. Well-equipped classrooms each have their own specialist subject library and there are art, textiles, music, photography and media studios. The College is not academically selective and in the light of this its examination results are exceptional. In 2013, 86% of A level entries were graded A*- C and 36% were A* or A grades. Among the many success stories this year one student won a place at Oxford University to study English Literature, two others gained places at UCL to read History of Art and another is heading to Exeter University to study History. Some students take the creative route to study Fine Art, Graphics or Photography, for example. GCSE results were equally strong in 2013, with 85% of entries, including Maths and English, scoring A*-C and an impressive 48% of entries achieving A* or A grades. Admission at A level is based on an interview with the Principals, satisfactory GCSE results and a reference from a previous school. Admission at GCSE is based on interview and reference. Admission to the Portfolio Course is through an interview with the Principals and portfolio assessment. For more information contact the College on 0207 586 0312.

We enjoy a central London location with excellent facilities. Fairley House addresses the difficulties of children between 5 and 14 with dyslexia and dyspraxia. There is a staff/pupil ratio of 1: 3.5 and the average stay is two to three years after which children return to mainstream schooling with a new ‘can do’ attitude. At Fairley House our intention is to provide your son or daughter with an educational experience which rivals that of any mainstream independent school. Many of our alumni have had excellent grades at GCSE and A-Level and progressed to top universities and now have successful careers in a range of areas.

The Independent Curriculum – instilling qualities for life

‘N

ow, what I want is, Facts. Teach these boys and BEN EVANS girls nothing but Facts. Facts alone are wanted HEADMASTER in life. Plant nothing AT EDGE GROVE else, and root out everything else.’ So said Mr Gradgrind, the headmaster in Charles Dickens’ Hard Times. Thankfully, education has come a long way since the nineteenth century and now offers a better mix of subject knowledge and other skills. But many heads of independent schools, including me, feel that the current national curriculum does not provide sufficient breadth and new initiatives introduced by the government are eroding skill based learning in favour of fact based learning rather than encouraging what I see as a healthy mix of both. The response to this by a growing number of Independent Schools is the development and adoption of the Independent Curriculum. The National Curriculum is a list of subjects and standards set by the government and used by primary and secondary schools to ensure that children across the country learn the same things. State schools are legally bound to follow the National Curriculum and it is true that many independent schools also use it as the foundation for their teaching and learning. Introduced in 1988, it has ensured much needed continuity and progression in schools where before there was varying qualities of practice. Indeed, GCSE and A-level syllabuses are based on the assumption that the pupils have followed a common course up to the age of 14 and schools would be foolish to ignore this. However, the National Curriculum is at the mercy of different governments and changes in policy, which can be damaging to longer term stability in education. Most recently there has been a government push under Michael Gove towards fact-based learning – not a problem in itself, but this is at the expense of other facets of learning. An example of this is the introduction of the English Baccalaureate which many consider has too narrow an academic focus.

As a consequence, independent schools have recently felt the need for a curriculum which works alongside the National Curriculum by providing innovative programmes of study incorporating academic excellence with creativity and innovation. Thus, the aptly named Independent Curriculum, which was devised by Andrew Hammond, a prep school headmaster himself, is now being adopted by an ever increasing number of leading preparatory schools who want an exciting and forward-thinking curriculum for their pupils. The Independent Curriculum is a creative curriculum which allows pupils to discover, apply and talk about their learning. It is a total curriculum incorporating the traditionally examined subjects as well as music, art, drama and design and technology which allows teachers to inspire, challenge and enthuse their pupils whilst at the same time instilling important qualities for life. Qualities such as resilience, self-motivation, discernment, tolerance and global awareness. No-one can argue that these qualities are not important but how often are they given the prominence they deserve in our children’s learning? In spite of numerous changes of government and educational policies, independent schools continue to thrive in their independence and to offer academic excellence and curricula based on the common sense principle that pupils need a healthy mix of subject knowledge and skills such as discovery and communication to become independent learners and thinkers. My priority is to produce intellectually curious pupils who can scrutinise information, problem solve and confidently debate and discuss their findings with others. A common sense approach that will prepare them for a successful and rewarding life. Edge Grove has fully implemented the Independent Curriculum throughout the school. Lockers Park Where success develops naturally

L

ockers Park is a school of ambition and excellence that has been educating boys to the highest standard for over 130 years. Our emphasis is not just on academic excellence, but also pastoral care and extra-curricular activities as we feel this nurtures the development of boys to produce their best. Academically, we prepare boys for the best of British public and independent schools, often with scholarships. We do not feed to any particular school, but work with the boys and their parents to find the best suited school to further his academic education. We are proud of our deservedly high reputation for being a school where the welfare and happiness of the boys are at the heart of all we do. Our belief is that success develops naturally in boys who are happy, motivated and given every encouragement and opportunity to push themselves, knowing they will always be supported. We encourage individuality and, as a small school, cherish the uniqueness of each boy. Lockers Park offers a first class education, holds traditional values dear but infuses this with modern practice. We are proud of the school and all it stands for, summed up best by the school motto – good results, good manners and good fun. THE PLAY’S THE THING AT THE HABERDASHERS’ ASKE’S SCHOOLS

The Haberdashers' Aske's Schools (Elstree), placed 'side by side for excellence', enjoy the best of all worlds in school education. On adjoining sites in 100 plus acres of secure grounds, they are two, single-sex, independent day schools whose pupils benefit greatly from a vast range of social and educational opportunities. The academic reputation of the two schools is well known: they are firmly established in the ‘premier league’ of annually published league tables, a remarkable achievement in itself. The vast majority of Haberdashers’ students go to their first choice university, exceptionally high numbers to Oxford and Cambridge, and some achieve national academic distinction during their time at school. 22 SEPTEMBER2013

Advertorial feature The Habs style is to love learning and to enjoy the academic opportunities alongside a huge wealth of extra-curricular activity. In both schools the range of the non-academic curriculum is enormous and the level of participation by pupils very high. Sport, music, theatre, art, service in the community, partnerships with local state schools, debating, public speaking, society meetings, fund-raising initiatives, outward bound and adventurous training activities and every type of leadership and resourcefulness opportunities are all regular features of the termly routine. Drama is an important part of both schools’ academic and extra-curricular programmes. With a strong emphasis on personal creativity and devised work, it offers students an opportunity to build something together as a team. It also allows students to express and develop themselves emotionally in a subject where there are few ‘right‘ answers. The subject is taught throughout both schools, focusing on all aspects of practical theatre from direction to design, improvisation to dance, sound and lighting to make-up and costume. Both schools have a long tradition of excellence in Drama and school plays have always been a muchanticipated fixture in the school calendar. The Senior, Middle and Junior plays each year provide opportunities for students to mix. This year saw sell out productions of 'The Comedy of Errors', performed under the direction of old Haberdasher Danny Fisher, and Salman Rushdie’s 'Haroun and The Sea of Stories'. The Girls’ School summer term ends with a Drama Festival with every form devising a ten-minute play, and Sixth Formers run drama clubs for younger students throughout the year. The Boys' School hold a very successful House Drama Competition each year, uncovering some exciting talent. Both drama departments regularly take students to productions in the West End, South Bank and the London Fringe. Students have access to state of the art drama studios, equipped with the very latest video facilities and computer operated sound and lighting equipment. The Bourne Hall is one of only five school stages in the UK to be equipped with a fully operational fly tower, allowing for spectacular effects and scene changes. The school’s theatre technician oversees set construction and prop making and there are comprehensive wardrobe and prop stores on site available for use by students. Saviours Undo the damage caused by a summer of heatwaves and holidays. Lisa Haynes prescribes some post-sun beauty cures for your skin and hair.

F

ridge magnets and postcards may not be the only mementos of your summer holiday. Frizzy locks and sun-parched skin are common aftereffects of a sun-filled vacation period. Just as we stock up on SPF potions before heading out into the sunshine, looking after skin and hair post-exposure is just as important. You may be looking tanned and gorgeous as summer draws to an end, but that ‘healthy glow’ is actually a sign that your skin is responding to UV damage, when melanin (our body’s natural sunscreen) moves towards the outer layers of the skin, making it darker. Restore and revive with these postsun saviours. Frazzled hair Symptoms: Frizzy texture, split ends and a dehydrated mane thanks to UV exposure and excessive heat. Solution: “Treat your hair to a nourishing weekly intensive treatment or mask that will feed your tresses,” recommends Norris Ogario, founder and creative director of Ogario salon. “For added therapy, pop on a shower cap after applying the mask to trap in the moisture and encourage the

Tried & tested Accentuate your summer glow and make skin sparkle with a bronze dry oil. Our testers try three pots of gold: :: The Body Shop Honey Bronze Shimmering Dry Oil, £16 for 100ml (www. thebodyshop.co.uk) This lightweight oil is non-greasy with a gorgeous smell and glittery finish that left my limbs sparkling. It’s also available in two shades, making it suitable for pale skin tones. Left and right: Images courtesy of PA Photo/Thinkstock

:: NARS Body Glow, £44 for 120ml (www.narscosmetics.co.uk) Best reserved for those with a medium to dark skin tone or tan. The deliciously fragrant oil made my tan look more intense and glossy and didn’t have an obvious shimmering, glittery finish, so it was more of a grown-up glow.

5/5

:: Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse OR Multi-Usage Dry Oil Golden Shimmer, £34 for 50ml (uk.nuxe.com) My skin instantly looked and felt more hydrated after using this golden shimmer. The sparkle is pale and subtle when it catches the light but I’m most impressed with its incredible skin softening qualities.

Split ends will impede healthy growth so just half an inch snipped off will make your hair stronger in the long run. Burnt-out skin Symptoms: Dull, dry and lacklustre skin due to a build-up of sunscreen over the summer. Solution: “Use a gentle body exfoliator that contains alpha hydroxy acids or fruit enzymes that will help purge product buildup and remove dead skin cells to pep up bronzed limbs,” suggests Jill Zander, founder of Jill Zander Skin Rejuvenation Clinic. “If you want to keep skin soft, smooth and glowing, a tan extender will also help boost your glow.” SOS: Embrace a body oil daily, using on slightly damp skin for extra absorption. Choose one with restorative ingredients such as evening primrose to boost your skin’s structure and elasticity. Sun spots Symptoms: Dark marks on the forehead, cheeks and upper lip from over-exposure to the sun. Solution: “To combat pigmentation and sun spots, use an even skin tone corrector to help fade away summer splotches and give a more even skin tone,” says B. skincare expert Ian Baynes. “It’s also important to protect the skin with a moisturiser containing SPF daily, no matter what the weather outside.” SOS: If your sun spots and pigmentation marks are starting to affect your confidence, look into a professional laser treatment, which can permanently dissolve them using gentle targeted micro-pulse technology.

Dehydrated face Symptoms: Tight-feeling skin which may have a crepey appearance, especially if you’ve suffered sunburn. Solution: “Dehydrated skin tends to look worn and lined so you need to restore balance with a routine that includes a serum, mask and moisturiser,” advises make-up artist Jemma Kidd. “Use a night cream that stimulates cell regeneration. Skin repairs itself at night and the temperature of the skin increases during sleep, aiding the absorption of active ingredients.” SOS: The combination of planes, pina coladas and sun-baking can lead to a seriously dehydrated complexion. Book in for a post-holiday facial, such as a HydraFacial (www.hydrafacial.co.uk), for instantly hydrated and radiant skin.

Beauty bulletin :: Beauty shirkers It’s official, British women aren’t spending enough time with their sinks. More than one third fail to wash their face every day (37%), according to a recent survey by Asda Beauty, and almost a quarter (22%) of females admit leaving their make-up on when they go to bed. While Scots top the chart for sticking to the best skincare routine in the UK, London ladies came up worst, with only 8% of those surveyed admitting to the same regular daily rituals. Welsh women opted for the quickest cleansing routine, with 12% using face wipes on a daily basis.

Success continues as Riverbanks Clinic celebrates its 5th Birthday

K

The multi-award winning ‘out of town’ cosmetic clinic Riverbanks is celebrating its 5th year in business this week.

nown internationally for its outstanding levels of expertise, treatment selection and customer care, the Hertfordshire-based Riverbanks Clinic has continued to attract clients from across the UK and abroad, despite being ‘out in the sticks’ compared to many of the London-based clinics. However, it seems the tranquil settings of East Hyde have done nothing but strengthen their offering. Riverbanks Clinic offers a range of treatments including the highly respected VASER, CoolTech and MedContour but also houses state of the art facilities for treating more common cosmetic ailments such as facial veins, rosacea and acne.

About Dr Ravi Jain Dr Jain’s expertise and ethical approach to all of the treatments he provides, has resulted in being highly sought after not only by patients but also by several of the aesthetic pharmacological & device companies.

The team of experts at Riverbanks Clinic only offer treatments that they know provide the best results for their clients, resulting in a high level of trust for the treatments on offer. It is this transparent service, open and honest feedback and that fact that the clinic has yet to receive a negative review, that speak volumes and have helped bring in a steady flow of business, most of which has been the result of referrals and recommendations.

Dr Jain has also been recognised as a consultant to QMED-Galderma UK (who produce Azzalure, Botulinum toxin & Emervel & Restylane.) Due to his excellent results and extensive experience, Sound Surgical Technologies (Vaser) called upon Dr Jain to develop a European wide VASER training programme for all doctors wishing to introduce VASER into their practice. As a result, Dr Jain now trains new Vaser doctors in UK and Europe.

Known to have the odd celebrity or two pass through its doors, Riverbanks Clinic has been featured in the prestigious Tatler Beauty & Cosmetic Surgery Guide to 2012 and its founder, Dr Ravi Jain, is a respected beauty industry consultant, speaker and international trainer.

Riverbanks Clinic is often used by Sound Surgical Technologies as a show centre for doctors, as they feel that Dr Jain’s facilities set high standards for a VASER environment and doctors often travel from around the world.

Reflecting on the success of the clinic to date, Dr Jain comments, “Opening the clinic in East Hyde was the start of what has been an amazing journey for Riverbanks Clinic and one that shows no sign of slowing down. We’ve continued to grow year on year and have introduced some amazing treatments, as well as opened a consultancy clinic in Harley Street. I am really proud of what the team have achieved and their dedication is reflected in the strength of our business as we reach our fifth birthday.” About Riverbanks Clinic The flagship Riverbanks Clinic is set in a leafy and tranquil riverside spot in East Hyde, just outside Harpenden. This pretty Georgian building has been extensively renovated to create light, fresh surroundings, with wooden flooring and a homely, organic feel. You’ll be looked after in treatment areas boasting state-of-the-art technology, using proven cutting-edge procedures. Their values are traditional and informal, affording you as much privacy as you need in an environment that is relaxed, friendly and – above all – professional. They also offer consulting locations in Harley Street and Braintree. 60 SEPTEMBER2013

In 2007 he was invited to join the medical advisory board for Sculptra (Sanofi-Aventis) and has been an active trainer and board member since then. He was responsible for developing the current training guidelines for new practitioners wishing to introduce Sculptra into their practice.

In 2011, Dr Alfredo Hoyos, the innovator of Vaser High Definition Liposculpture, invited Dr Jain to the faculty of The Interntional Centre of Artistic Body Sculpting (IC:ABS), and appointed Riverbanks as the only centre in the world to school the Dynamx Basic & Advanced Vaser training courses for doctors. Dr Jain’s passion for excellence extends developing the speciality of aesthetic medicine and as such he is a faculty member for the Masters degree in Cosmetic Medicine at Greenwich University. In 2011, he was invited to become the President for The Society of Cosmetic Physicians and Surgeons. Dr Jain continues to work extensively with the media, being featured in Elle, The Daily Mail, The Mirror, The Daily Express, Company Magazine, Top Sante, Red, Glamour, BBC Radio, Living TV, Channel 4’s “Embarrassing Bodies”, Best Magazine, Woman’s Own, Slim at Home, Saga and MSN Style. Lasting Power of Attorney

T

A decision of fundamental importance

he system of lasting powers of attorneys (LPAs) and Court appointed deputies introduced by the Mental Capacity Act 2005 has been in place for sometime now. Patrick Green, a partner in Taylor Walton solicitors Private Client team, looks at the implications of two recent decisions by the Court of Protection for attorneys and deputies, which are relevant to those looking to put LPAs in place and also attorneys and deputies who have already been appointed. Nobody likes to think about losing the ability to deal with their own affairs but fate can deal some cruel blows. For this reason it is well worth considering putting a Lasting Power of Attorney in place to make things as easy as possible for those who might have to deal with your affairs should you no longer be able to do so yourself. The choice of attorneys is therefore of fundamental importance and needs careful thought. It could also be worth taking impartial advice at the outset. Whilst attorneys appointed under an LPA, or Court appointed deputies, can have wide powers, they must remember that those powers are still limited in some ways and it is important for them to always consider their duties and responsibilities. In one recent case, a registered LPA was revoked by the Court because of the way the attorney had invested money on behalf of her aunt, who had appointed her as attorney. The attorney had taken over £40,000 for her own use and had put nearly £90,000 into a reptile breeding venture. Whilst the Court’s decision was perhaps unsurprising given the way the attorney had handled her aunt’s money, the case is useful because it highlights two misconceptions about attorneys. The first is that an attorney can invest money how they want, whilst the second is the belief that attorneys can do whatever the “donor”, the person who granted the LPA, could have done, or perhaps would have done. Neither of these is correct because attorneys must remember that they owe a duty to the person who made the LPA and have a responsibility to act in that person’s best interests. In a second case, two deputies applied for retrospective approval

70 SEPTEMBER2013

by the Court for gifts, charitable donations and “expenses” they had previously made. The judge found that most of the gifts were unauthorised. This illustrates the point that deputies and attorneys have very limited powers to make gifts, regardless of whether the gift is intended to help out friends or family or for other reasons, such as inheritance tax planning. What attorneys and deputies can do, and in some circumstances must do, is apply to the Court of Protection before making gifts so that where their own authority is limited, they act with the Court’s approval. These cases highlight the serious nature of the responsibilities the Court expects attorneys and deputies to exercise and the fact that it will not accept financial mismanagement, even if the attorney or deputy is acting with the best of intentions. Best intentions are not the same as acting in someone’s best interests within the meaning of the Mental Capacity Act. Attorneys and deputies must look to make use of the resources available to them and consider the need to take appropriate advice at an early stage. Taylor Walton solicitors has considerable experience in advising attorneys and deputies on their ongoing duties and responsibilities, applications to the Court of Protection and related issues including tax planning and will help attorneys and deputies to always act appropriately. The Legal 500, which is an independent guide to the best law firms, ranks Taylor Walton’s Private Client team as one of only four premier firms of solicitors in the Beds, Bucks, Herts and Middlesex region for wills, probate and tax saving strategies. We are particularly experienced in dealing with complex tax planning arrangements and family issues. If you would like advice or assistance in relation to lasting powers of attorney, inheritance tax planning and will writing then please contact Patrick Green on 01582 765111 or email to patrick.green@taylorwalton.co.uk

Fusion penthouse poised for prestigious property award

T

hose very clever luxury home creators from Fusion Residential are getting set to pop the Champagne corks after being named regional winner in the 2013 UK Property Awards. The Fusion team will be honoured at a black tie dinner at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on October 18 for their exquisite Murano House apartments in Cockfosters Road, Hadley Wood. The winners of the UK competition will go on to compete in the International Property Awards. President of the awards committee, Stuart Shield, praised Fusion for their nomination saying the company “stood out from the crowd by creating unique and innovative properties that elevate the character and appearance of our towns and cities”. It is the second time Fusion has been honoured in this, the most prestigious of property awards competitions. Fusion’s Amara Lodge project just along the road in Hadley Wood, and coincidentally the blueprint for Murano, was also a winner in 2011. Clearly, winning is part of the Fusion pedigree. It is no wonder Murano impressed the judges. From the moment you step into the jaw-droppingly elegant development, you can sense the unmistakeable and quite tangible Fusion feel for excellence. The property is finished with marvellous and meticulous attention to detail. It is a luxurious concierge-serviced set of apartments boasting everything from waterproof flat screen TVs, bespoke kitchen, touch control air conditioning, state of the art entertainment systems and iPad-controlled home management. Murano offers five stunning apartments but, unsurprisingly, only two remain, including the fully furnished and quite breath-taking penthouse. The stunning entrance hall is beautifully bathed in natural light, courtesy of huge feature skylights above. It has three double bedrooms, living room, study, large kitchen diner, utility room, and a very wide open-air terrace

86 SEPTEMBER2013

commanding magnificent views across Hadley Wood Golf Course at the end of the lawned garden. The master bedroom is nothing short of a masterpiece. It too, has fresh air terrace access and that incredible panoramic view. In fact, Murano has spectacular countryside views front and back. The master en suite has been finished with a statement free-standing oval bath with a skylight over head, walk in shower, exquisitely crafted seamless his’n’hers basins and the requisite waterproof flat screen TV. Two further fantastically furnished bedrooms are adjoined by another unique en suite bathroom. Fusion opulence drips from every tap, every exquisite detail. Wall coverings are richly textured and, combined with the walnut floor and door finishes, project wonderful warmth, enhanced by subtle mood lighting sunk in the floors. The kitchen, overlooking Green Belt to the front, has been Poggenpohl fitted with a range of Miele integrated appliances including two multifunction ovens, combination microwave, coffee machine, dishwasher and induction hob. And helping keep you in control is Fusion’s trademark “Smart Home” technology delivered via wall inset iPads allowing remote programming and control of lighting, heating, air-con, audio, vision and security. The penthouse is the perfect place for those at the top of their game, who like being in control. Offers for Murano penthouse are invited in the region of £2.65 million and first floor apartment is priced at £1.395m. Contact Debbie Williams on 01923 216535 to arrange a viewing.

Garden Hill House TOTTERIDGE VILLAGE, N20

A

truly exquisite character property, with some original parts dating back to the 18th century, and nestling in the heart of Totteridge Village, opposite the church – undoubtedly one of the finest bespoke properties to come to the market in many years.

This Grade II double fronted residence, reminiscent of the Queen Anne period, has enigmatically undergone extensive modernisation and improvements by the current owners, yet has sympathetically been allowed to retain many original period features to the formal receptions and hallway, that have enhanced its individuality. In addition, this spectacular home boasts beautifully tended landscaped gardens of just under 2 acres to the rear, abutting greenbelt countryside beyond. 100 SEPTEMBER2013

This Grade II listed home is arranged over three levels with the opportunity to use part of the house as a self-contained staff/guest cottage. The cottage can be accessed at both ground and first floor levels from the main house. The house is well located for travel by road and rail, being close to the M25, A1(M), M1, Oakleigh Park and Mill Hill Broadway mainline stations. The shops and restaurants of Whetstone are just a short drive away and there is easy access to London via the underground at Totteridge & Whetstone. The surrounding area offers a wide choice of excellent schools incl Mill Hill, North London Collegiate, QE Boys and Haberdasher’s Aske.
