ankel, the UK’s leading provider of armoured vehicles and survivability solutions, announced today that 2015 marks the company’s 60th anniversary of the first vehicle built by its founder Robert Jankel. 60 years ago, Robert a motor sport enthusiast, took his passion and turned it into a successful business, growing from a small garage in Chiswick, West London, to a global organisation in three continents. The early years of Jankel focussed on building and customising luxury vehicles under the company’s Panther brand. Exclusive models, including the Panther J72 and Panther De Ville, were hand built in Jankel’s production facilities located in Brooklands, Weybridge; a location synonymous with British motoring heritage. More recently Jankel has evolved to supply armoured and tactical vehicles, and survivability solutions, to internal security forces, police forces, military, government agencies and NGO customers worldwide. This milestone underscores Jankel’s commitment to British manufacturing and engineering, working to create market leading products that provide protection, comfort and functionality whatever the requirement. Jankel is the business it is today due, in part, to its talented and dedicated staff, who share Robert’s spirit, passion and enthusiasm for the company and its mission. “60 years is an amazing achievement for Jankel” said Andrew Jankel, Chairman and son of founder Robert Jankel. “My Dad was a true entrepreneur; his innovation and creativeness set the foundation on which a global business has grown. His passion is at the heart of everything that Jankel does, encouraging innovation from the team and I am proud that his legacy has been able to live on and grow stronger and stronger since 1955”.

The Art of Bedlam opens 16 June Dadd was one of the most gifted artists of the early Victorian period, making his name with imaginative, highly detailed Shakespearean images. Despite later suffering from severe mental illness and spending much of his career in psychiatric hospitals, Dadd continued to create beautiful and haunting pictures including masterpieces such as The Fairy Feller’s Master-Stroke. LESSONS

John Smith, owner of The Surrey Sporting Club explains ”We always do group lessons (4-5 people maximum) because these take the pressure off the individual and make things more enjoyable. One hears everything said several times and criticisms aren’t taken personally! Unlike other clubs and shooting grounds, we only ever give beginners one lesson, it is all one needs, but the lesson lasts for 2-2 ½ hours instead of 1 hour. After this you get tips from time to time, as necessary, no charge. The lesson costs £70 and includes gun hire and 60 cartridges, there are no extras, even the tea / coffee are free. Lessons start at about 10.15am on the Sundays that the club meets. Other prices are on our website. We have 20 and 12 bores as required. We have a Section 11 exemption as a Police approved range so can hire guns and sell ammunition for use on the ground. You do not need a licence. We ask for immediate payment in full and confirm the lesson only on receipt of the payment, this is because our lessons are usually fully booked and if you don’t turn up you will be denying someone else the opportunity; we also have to pay the instructor whether you turn up or not! After the lesson, and if you like us, you can join the club or shoot as a visitor, it pays to join if you plan to shoot regularly, but it’s your choice.” THE DETAILS 01483 283996 www.surreysportingclub.co.uk

Private school pupils are continuing to outshine their state sector counterparts by a wide margin when it comes to A-level results, new figures show. A new analysis based on figures released by the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) also shows that nearly half (48.2 per cent) of private school pupils achieve an A* or A grade, while just 22.5 per cent of A-level entries made from other exam centres – usually schools – achieve an A* or A grade. The figures show a disturbingly wide gap between the results achieved by independent and state school pupils. Tracy Cook, of the Independent Schools Council (ISC), which carried out the study, said: “The surprise is how big the gap is between independent and state sector pupils’ results. It is indicative of the significant added value provided by independent schools, due to factors such as intensive, focused teaching and smaller class sizes.” The study found that the performance of independent school pupils is particularly strong in sciences, maths and modern foreign languages, where they score high proportions of the top A* grade, compared with the percentage of pupils taking these exams. These are key subjects that are deemed strategically important to our economic future, but which are less popular with pupils

and attract fewer students. The gulf between private and state sector results was particularly stark in the sciences. In physics A-level, independent schools supply 18.3 per cent of all candidates, yet because of the strength of their performance they account for 34.0 per cent of the A* grades awarded in the subject and make up 28.5 per cent of all entries in physics that achieve an A grade or higher. In biology, independent schools supply just over 14 per cent of all candidates for A-level, but account for 28.7 per cent of the A* grades. Private school pupils also account for 24.1 per cent of all entries in biology that achieve an A grade or higher. And in chemistry, independent schools supply 16.6 per cent of all candidates for A-level, but account for more than 31 per cent of A* grades awarded. They account for 26.6 per cent of all entries in chemistry that achieve an A grade or higher. According to a report by Oxford Economics consultancy group last year, the higher academic attainment of pupils at independent schools contributes an estimated £1.3 billion per year to the UK’s GDP, once those pupils enter the job market. Prof Sir Michael Sterling, a former chairman of the Russell Group of leading universities, said: “Independent schools offer a rigorous and thorough academic education, based on an expectation of high standards, exceptional levels of teaching and support and an encouragement of pupils’ hard work and dedication.”

‘Private schools should be praised for producing influential people’ A new study by Debrett’s, the etiquette experts, reveals that two-fifths of the 500 most powerful and influential people in Britain went to private schools

C

rucially this cuts across all spheres of influence, including not only traditional careers, like business and politics, but areas like architecture and acting too: witness the amazing global success of Eton-educated Eddie Redmayne, still only 33, as Professor Stephen Hawking, in The Theory of Everything. Of course private schools are always going to produce far more than their fair share of Society’s most powerful “players”. This is inevitable, given the fact that most successful people educate their own children privately; thus the system is guaranteed to be perpetuated, with success breeding success. For example, high-flying parents will have all the key contacts, whether in commerce or theatre, to help ensure their own offspring have that first, vital helping hand up the career ladder. Work experience slots inevitably go to the children of top business people or lawyers, for example as inevitably their parents have the contacts to find precious openings. And anyone who has been to a private school, whether big or small, famous or not so famous, will know that there will be many such high-achieving parents. Their added

44 april 2015

influence opens doors more easily and, crucially, other pupils can also benefit from their contacts. For example, successful parents are often instrumental in prompting high-profile acquaintances to visit schools as speakers: spending time with pupils and offering invaluable advice on “How to succeed” in the process. That way, everyone benefits from their expertise. This is indeed how the system works on a termly basis: little nudges here and there, but nothing too blatant or nepotistic. Private schools are exceedingly good at producing successful pupils…

Happy boys love learning! L anesborough is Guildford’s very popular prep school for boys, providing the highest quality academic and all-round education for boys from 3 to 13. Major plans have now been approved to develop a neighbouring property to improve and enhance existing facilities and space but to still keep class sizes to an average of 16. The Head, Clare Turnbull, and her staff believe that boys need to be happy and confident to be able to learn. They guide each individual boy on his journey giving him the necessary skills as well as a love of learning. Lanesborough creates an environment that allows each boy to partake fully in an education tailored to his needs. It is robustly academic, allowing the boys to be competitive, inspiring them to be supportive and ensuring that they develop a wide range of interests. It prepares them to take advantage of the many opportunities that life has to offer: a true preparatory education tailored for each boy. The academic success of Lanesborough is well known with boys regularly achieving scholarships to their chosen senior school, as well as being the first prep school to be nationally accredited for its gifted and talented provision and it receiving an outstanding inspection report. For example, this summer two current pupils, through one of the After School Clubs, achieved A Grades in GCSE Astronomy. The wonderful academic life at Lanesborough is enriched by a superb music tradition and an incredible range of sporting and creative clubs and activities. To assist working parents, Lanesborough has recently

extended their provision of before and after school care, which is proving very popular. In addition, there are also more than 50 different clubs that the boys can take part in at lunchtimes or afterschool. Fun, vibrancy and passion for learning are around every corner. Do come and see for yourself. Please call Mrs Gordon, the Head’s PA, for details of our Open Mornings or for an individual tour with the Head 01483 880652, secretary@lanesborough.surrey.sch.uk Also, do visit our website to see what fun goes on at Lanesborough - this could be the school for your son.

Get made-up

for spring Make-up artists at fashion shows have a tendency to get a bit, well, experimental - resulting in catwalk looks that you wouldn’t dream of wearing in real life. By Katie Wright, Press Association

T

he SS15 shows threw up a fair few of these (fake eyebrow piercings at Rodarte, for instance), but they also delivered some gorgeously wearable trends. After autumn’s darkly decadent feel, the mood for spring is light and joyful, with hippy waves and groupie girl ‘dos mirroring the Seventies fashion comeback. Red lips return, but it’s really all about the eyes, with pretty purple shadows, bright eyeliners and glittery lids coming to the fore. These are the top spring beauty trends you’ll want to DIY...

OUT OF LINE

The cat-eye flick ruled the autumn runways, but for spring, it’s time to get adventurous with your eyeliner. At Dior, liquid pastel lines shone on models’ lids, while at Elie Saab, brightest aquatic blue ringed their eyes. At Peter Som, flashes of neon orange were flecked under the eyes, but the most extreme liner look was at Fendi, where make-up artist Peter Philips cut slivers from the house’s cornflower blue leather hair ties and affixed them on models’ eyelids. The easiest way to ape this trend? With the brightest eye pencil you can muster, the tip dampened to help deliver a thoroughly saturated layer of colour. TRY THIS AT HOME: MAC Pro High-def Cyan Chromagraphic Pencil, £14 (www.maccosmetics.co.uk)

GET INTO THE GROOVE

At the same time as the Seventies style revival, lots of designers sent their model armies out with long, groovy, flowing locks. At Marchesa, Toni & Guy’s global hair ambassador Mark Hampton created what he called 54 april 2015

‘Woodstock waves’, while at Peter Pilotto and Osman, tresses were straighter but still light and ethereal. At Tom Ford, shaggy just-got-out-of-bed barnets declared ‘I’m with the band’, a look you can recreate with a combination of volumising dust and texturising spray. TRY THIS AT HOME: Unite Texturiza Spray, £23 (www.unitehair.co.uk)

RED ALERT

It’s back. After a season in the cold, the scarlet pout made a welcome return on the SS15 catwalks - but we’re not talking ‘bitten’ lips or delicate stains. At Zac Posen in New York, a heavy coat of classic red was matched with glossy nails, while in London, a matte ruby shade ruled at Burberry, and Sibling’s doll-like models had pillar box bright mouths. TRY THIS AT HOME: Burberry Beauty Lip Cover Soft Satin Lipstick in Ruby, £23 (www.johnlewis.com)

THE COLOUR PURPLE

It was declared Pantone’s Colour of the Year for 2014, which might be why so many make-up artists made a beeline for ‘radiant orchid’ when designing their catwalk looks (the spring shows happen in September, don’t forget). At Derek Lam, a wash of pinky-purple covered eyelids, while at Vera Wang, a darker, matte shadow was used to create a twist on the smoky eye. At Matthew Williamson, Benefit’s Lisa Potter-Dixon actually used a purple-hued lipstick as an eye colour, which is handy, because it means you can get the exact same colour on your own peepers.

Spring’s most decadent make-up look? It’s got to be the glittery eyes that cropped up at London Fashion Week At House of Holland, silver sparkled over a layer of grey eyeshadow and a heavily kohl-rimmed lower lid, and over at sequin-obsessed Ashish, gallons of glitter must have been used to coat all the way up to the eyebrows. Obviously, the latter look is best left to teenagers, but a smattering of sparkle is more wearable than you might imagine, especially if you choose a finely-milled powder in a dark metallic shade. PALE NAILS

As the clothing colour palettes were, on the whole, fairly subdued this season, it stands to reason that it was all about pale and interesting manicures. At Manish Arora, pretty pastel shades were chosen to match models’ clutch bags, while at Kenzo, a French manicure pink or baby blue base was shot through with an irregular band of silver origami paper. So load up on sugary shades, shimmering metallics and a nail art brush, and get playful with your nails. TRY THIS AT HOME: MAC Nail Lacquer in Delicate, £10 (www.maccosmetics.co.uk). april 2015 55

Managing and avoiding

sports injuries Not only does running keep you fit and in shape, it also can help prevent heart disease and having a stroke. However, getting a running injury can stop you in your tracks. The consultants at the Orthopaedic Centre of Excellence at Spire Clare Park Hospital in Farnham advise on how to avoid getting a running injury. Warming up

The warm up is easily overlooked by an eager runner, but it is important to help avoid an injury. Spend at least 10 minutes stretching and doing light aerobics such as jogging, star jumps and hip circles. This will circulate blood and oxygen to the muscles and reduce stiffness to help avoid muscle tears.

Running

A proper pair of running shoes with shock absorbers is essential. When running look straight ahead with arms at 90° and hands loose. Run at a speed which suits you, increasing distance and pace gradually overtime. Land with a slight bend in the knee to absorb the impact.

Knees

The knee is the largest joint in the body. Knee cartilage is spongy to provide a cushion and shock absorber when we run; this cannot regenerate naturally as it has no blood vessels. Gradually increasing pace and distance overtime can help avoid overusing the knees and wearing down the cartilage. Stretching before running is important as tight hamstrings and calf muscles restrict movement placing unwanted stress on the knee. If you experience any pain in and around the kneecap, swelling or a popping/grinding sensation stop running immediately as this may indicate a torn ligament or cartilage damage. If you have severe pain or it persists for more than a week seek medical help.

The feet contain 26 bones, 33 joints, 112 ligaments and a collection of nerves, tendons and blood vessels Ankles

The feet contain 26 bones, 33 joints, 112 ligaments and a collection of nerves, tendons and blood vessels which all work together when we run. The Achilles tendon is a strong cord which attaches the calf muscle to the heel bone used to push off when we run. Achilles tendon rupture is a common running injury. Injury can be avoided by wearing shoes which redistribute weight from the Achilles, alternating running with less impact exercise such as swimming and properly stretching the tendon before running. Runners who experience sudden pain, a popping/snapping sound, swelling or stiffness should seek medical help immediately.

his spring, there are dozens of newbies to choose from - and for once, they’re not all boringly airy and elegant. “Spring risks being one big cliche for perfumes, in which we are encouraged to get as dainty as Sandra Dee and switch over to delicate florals like lily of the valley,” says fragrance expert Lizzie Ostrom aka Odette Toilette (www.odettetoilette.com). “There’s nothing wrong with these kinds of perfumes, but there’s an awful lot more to enjoy beyond the usual suspects wheeled out at this time of the year.” Break the rules, Ostrom says: “Personal preference is much more important. Spicy scents often only get attention in the winter, but they can as much convey the energy of spring, as the crackling fires of winter.” So shake off those eau de toilette assumptions and take your pick from spring’s most potent perfumes...

very evening for most of my adult life, I’d shave my legs in the bath only to have that awful sand paper stubble appear by about lunch time the next day. We’re not talking a fine sand paper stubble, we’re talking the course grain, graze your hand if you touch your leg type stubble! Inconvenient and embarrassing to say the least. I’d considered laser hair removal and a few years ago enquired about it. I was told that I’d need to have it done in the winter as being bit of a sun worshipper I spend a lot of the year with a tan. This was never convenient for me and I continued the constant shave/stubble routine. By chance I spoke about this to Jill herself at

the Jill Zander Skin Rejuvenation Clinic in Esher. She explained that the New Soprano ICE is an in-motion laser and is great for tackling those thick, stubborn hairs, it is virtually pain free and wait for it… it can be used to treat those with tanned skin! Six sessions later (I saw results after the first session) it’s goodbye to the nightly shaving routine and the awful course stubble, and hello to new smooth virtually hair free legs! daptations, established in 1999 by Ian Cross, opened their Cobham showroom in the summer of 2012 to showcase their contemporary German handleless kitchens alongside their own bespoke range of furniture made from reclaimed Oak. Ian Cross says, we were looking for a high end German brand that would complement our existing ranges and allow us greater flexibility and design options. Adaptations work with architects, designers and developers where the kitchen is part of a larger project such as new builds and refurbishments but also offer a complete installation service for people looking for a turnkey solution and will project manage all aspects of the installation including tiling and flooring, electrical works and plumbing as well as redecoration. Home Owners Need to be Wary of “Quick-Fit Fitters”

S

ometimes UK home owners expectations of delivery for bespoke replacement double glazed windows and/or double glazed doors are not very realistic, as some don’t appreciate how much work is involved. Put simply, tailor made windows and doors are just that, made to measure products in terms of design, colour and size. Fenestration products not designed, measured, fabricated or installed correctly can lead to unwanted aggravation for property owners. To highlight this, if a double glazing supplier has a surveyor, fabricator and/or fitters sitting round waiting on your order, it would be sensible to ask them why? There are lots of really decent double glazing installers in the UK, many of whom work primarily on recommendation. These sorts of firms are likely to be booked up many weeks in advance, because as a general rule customers would rather wait and have their replacement windows or doors measured right, manufactured right and installed properly, than have all the hassle caused when one or more of these operations is rushed to the detriment of a decent job. It is better to have

80 april 2015

really good quality, well-made windows and doors which are fitted a couple of weeks late, rather than to have them poorly designed, and/or made defectively and/or fitted in too much of a hurry. It is easy to understand why customers are tempted to rush things along wanting their project completed as fast as possible, or customers who get pressurized by their builder or developer to buy windows and doors from a firm that their builder “recommends” that will deliver the products when the builder wants. Builders are notorious for wanting to fit new windows and doors as quickly as possible so they can move on to their next building project! Builders can therefore be keen to suggest buying windows and door products where they can get them fast, and not necessary the products that will be the best investment for the property owner, who is after all the customer, so should be the person specifying which windows and doors they require, and fitted by whom they trust to do a good job that will leave them with well installed products. To assist householders and give them greater peace of mind when appointing an installation company, consumer champions Which? established an endorsement scheme labelled ‘Which? Trusted Traders’.

In 2014 the region’s largest independent double glazing manufacturers and installers, Hazlemere Window Company, joined this prestigious scheme after they passed an intense assessment process, proving that they met the strict requirements set out by Which? and satisfy the high standards they expect of a local and reliable trader. It demonstrates to customers that those who achieve Which Trusted Trader status have proven themselves as having been trustworthy up to that point, and that they are firmly committed to offering complete

Those who achieve Which Trusted Trader status have proven themselves as having been trustworthy up to that point fairness and transparency at all times. To undertake a replacement window project properly, a professional surveyor should take careful accurate measurements (so they end up fitting properly), then raw materials have to be ordered (any coloured products are likely to be on a longer lead time) along with sealed units from the glass suppliers to ensure these will fit into the frames that are being specially made. Next, the products then need to be scheduled for production, as most double glazing manufacturers will not have skilled workers standing round. Once the products have been fabricated

the installations department will need to confirm up the provisional date they will have hopefully pencilled in with you when you placed your order. Understanding the above process for bespoke fenestration products should set off alarm bells if a double glazing installer says they can supply and fit within a few weeks. Ask yourself, why have they not got a waiting list? It is wise to be wary of any double glazing company “promising” a quick delivery in order to get you to sign up with them, as the last thing you want is to regret handing over a large deposit to the wrong company for the sake of a few weeks wait. So beware the quick fit window or door fitter! The danger of paying over a deposit is that once a customer has paid a supplier, they are then really stuck with that supplier (unless prepared to lose the deposit) however long that supplier then takes to supply and fit the products. Before ordering from any double glazing company, ensure a) you’ve done enough research so you can be confident your chosen partner will still be around in 10 years’ time!, b) you’ve read recent satisfactory customer reviews, c) you’ve seen the products first hand they will be supplying so you know for certain what to expect, and d) that they are Which Trusted Traders. LUXURY, STYLE, COMFORT With the hint of a residential atmosphere for financial/ property advisers’ offices in the heart of Mayfair

O

ne of london’s most elegant districts since the 18th century. South African born Louis Bührmann established his own interior design practice in 2007. He has created dazzling apartments in London, the Cote d’Azur, Paris and Dubai. Everything from furniture to carpets, chandeliers to door handles is custom made to the highest standards, mostly to his own design, with furniture crafted by his brother Balthasar, a master cabinetmaker. He had known the clients, directors of PGS (Principal Global Solutions) for some time, understood how they wished to provide maximum efficiency, while putting clients entirely at their ease. The company was founded in 2010 to advise some of the world’s most affluent individuals, their companies and family offices. PGS expertise spans commercial consultancy, all aspects of the property market, travel and logistics. Their offices, in a former grand town house, is seconds away from Mount Street and Park Lane (both names spell traditional chic and luxury). The building has classically proportioned interiors with Grade I (ie of officially recognised quality) marble and plaster work. Clients’ brief: spacious boardroom for members and guests with a specially designed boardroom table seating at least twelve people, equipped with the most up to date conference technology, an additional seating area leading effortlessly on to the heated terrace. Photographs and paintings selected by art curator, Sascha Bailey, were the work of Damien Hirst, one of the world’s most successful contemporary artists. Louis installed blackout blinds to ensure the lighting for video conferencing could be controlled. Grey striped pelmets balanced the visual weight of the classical mouldings. The ribbon and wreath plaster motif on the walls was hand finished in gold leaf. A bronze horse

94 april 2015

sculpture served as a clever device to separate the more relaxed seating area from the boardroom table, in this way creating two spaces. The gold chain coffee table was a happy discovery at Maison et Objet, an annual trade fair in Paris, favourite hunting ground for interior designers. The project had to be completed quickly to ensure nothing interrupted the clients’ work programme. Louis coordinated his team to finish everything within five weeks. No structural changes were needed, and the walls had been painted snow white, a perfect backdrop, Louis considered, to realise his vision: professional efficiency but subtly suggesting the informality of a private residence.
