A Victorian water tower, which sits at the heart of Repton Park, an exclusive residential development in Chigwell, Essex, on the outskirts of London and which has been tastefully converted into a luxury three-bedroom home, is being marketed by local estate agent Hunt Property Services for £1.25 million, the first time that the property will have changed hands since its conversion 12 years ago. e 50m high, Grade II listed Landmark Tower is an iconic property, the interior of which belies its historic past. RECYCLING ART COMPETITION WINNERS

T
he whole of Epping Primary School celebrated the success of Year 1 pupil Belle Liggitt. Belle submitted a winning entry in Epping Forest District Council’s competition to design a poster for the side of its refuse freighters. 400 class mates lined up for the special celebration photo. Belle’s recycling picture appears 10 feet tall on the side of the district’s refuse and recycling vehicles, spreading the message of recycling far and wide. Tracy O’Donnell, Epping Primary School Head Teacher said: “Today has been a very proud and exciting day for all the children. We are ever so pleased and proud of her. It was great to have all the children in the photo so we could all celebrate together.” “Recycling is very much part of the curriculum and ethos of our school. We are very fortunate to have a new building, just 4 years old and are completely eco-friendly. We harvest rain water to flush our toilets and the windows automatically open and close based on Co2 levels set.” “Reducing, re-using and recycling is very important to us. We have a ‘school eco

council’ made up of a team of very enthusiastic pupils who make sure that we are being eco-friendly at all times. We entered for a special ‘school eco council award’ and eagerly await the outcome.” “It’s important to set the foundations of recycling at a young age. We start the
children thinking about it when they come to the school aged 4 and keep it part of the curriculum and part of our school assemblies and school routines. For us it’s a real hot topic and we think it’s really important to look after our school, our community and ultimately our planet.” “Belle was very nervous on the day at having the whole school around her and a recycling lorry in the playground. Last term we had a special assembly and presented her with a huge photograph given to us by the council. We gave Belle an award and bought her a present to say ‘well done’. We explained to the other pupils that Belle had won our school a wonderful gift of money to be used towards arts supplies in the school, ensuring that art linked to recycling continues to be high profile in the school.” Sita UK and Epping Forest District Council invited all primary, infant and junior schools in the district to take part in the “creative schools competition”. Belle Liggitt and Patsy Stow were the 2 winners. e girls were presented with vouchers to Chessington World of Adventures and their schools received cheques for £500. ey were selected from over 1,000 entries.

AN EXHIBITION AT VALENTINE’S MANSION TUESDAY 1 JULY – TUESDAY 30 SEPTEMBER

TO MARK THE CENTENARY OF WW1, VALENTINES MANSION STUDIO ARTISTS ARE RESPONDING TO THE THEME OF 'WAR' IN THIS YEAR’S ANNUAL EXHIBITION. THE ARTISTS ALL USE DIVERSE ART FORMS AND THIS WILL BE A VARIED COLLECTIVE RESPONSE.
D
uring the restoration of Valentines Mansion in 2009, the servant’s quarters on the top floor of the building were transformed into six contemporary studios for local artists and craftspeople. Every year, the artists come together to showcase their work through an annual exhibition in the Mansion’s gallery and this year’s display will bring together their diverse mediums and practices under the theme of War. JASON ROSE “Earth to Earth” Jason’s depiction of the soldiers in the trenches has been created entirely using earth and compost. is textured piece is symbolic of the conditions faced by the brave men who fought in the war. AMANDA SELJUBAC “When Do Poppies Bloom in Flanders Fields” Inspired by the poem "In Flanders Fields", Amanda has cleverly layered and manipulated a collection of photographs of the world war to create one image. e different hues give a different feel to each photograph but the subject is still the same – WAR. LISA ATKIN “What would you spend £100 Billion on?” e government claims not to have any money, but it is about to commit to spending £100 billion on a new nuclear weapons system while simultaneously implementing austerity cuts. £6.6 million of public money is spent on nuclear weapons every day in the UK. is money should be invested in people – on healthcare, education, housing or energy for example. In other words, things we need. JULIAN WALKER “Objects commemorating the loss of objects in Liverpool Museum, 1941” Developed from “Collection: Liverpool Museum, May 1941”, New Contemporaries, Liverpool Biennial, 1999. Large parts of the Liverpool Museum collection were destroyed in the Blitz of 1941. SADIA UR-REHMAN “Sepoy” A sepoy was formerly the designation given to an Indian soldier.

During World War I for the first time, Indian soldiers were fighting on European soil, playing a pivotal role in all of the major theatres of war on land, air and sea, alongside British troops. Using print, Ur-Rehman has created a series of works using her drawings and factual text quotes to explore the ‘sepoy’s’ role in World War I. Valentines Mansion & the War From November 1914 until March 1918, Valentines Mansion, Ilford was used by Ilford Council to house Belgian refugees. During the war, 250,000 Belgian refugees arrived in Britain to escape the fighting. e government offered ‘the hospitality of the British nation’ and gave financial support. e Mansion was home to 270 refugees over the course of the war although most stayed for a short time before finding accommodation elsewhere. From May 1918 until March 1919 Valentines Mansion was then used as a convalescent home and reception area for sick and wounded soldiers, with up to 60 beds. is freed up beds at the Ilford Emergency Hospital which was used for casualties who needed more intensive nursing care. Valentines Mansion was staffed by Voluntary Aid Detachment nurses, trained by the St John Ambulance Brigade. Patients could be moved out of the wards and into the park and although discipline was strict, local people were encouraged to visit patients. Place:

ports Days and outside activities feature prominently in the Summer Term at all three Oak-Tree Schools, and this year the weather has enabled these events to be held in blissful sunshine. At Coopersale Hall School, parents were able to cheer on their children in their Sports Day races while enjoying picnics and ice creams around the main sports pitch with views of Epping. e school’s sports teams have impressive records against other local schools, and their inter-house races were just as competitive. Some races proved that the quickest don’t always win, with the egg and spoon showing that a steady pace and good concentration can prevail! Even the youngest children have their own races and parents participate too. Normanhurst School is fortunate to be able to use world class facilities for its Sports Day as all children from 2½ to 16 race at the Lea Valley Sports Complex. Headmistress Claire Osborn feels that using this national centre helps the school’s young athletes to shine at the annual National ISA Athletics Championships; “All our senior pupils are used to performing at big venues and are not overawed by big stadia. For a relatively small school we are always very well represented in the medals table, normally outperforming the larger schools”. Oaklands School in Loughton held its Sports Day on the hottest day of the year so far, with pupils sheltering in the shade under the 100 year old oak tree, also the school emblem. Children of all ages cheered on their friends and hundreds of enthusiastic parents supported their children. Older prefects shepherded the younger children to the scorers at the end of

each race, showing the community spirit for which the school is renowned. Of course the most competitive were the ‘Mummies and Daddies’ races with numerous competitors. No sprained ankles this year though! Matthew Hagger, Group Principal of the Oak-Tree Schools, enjoyed watching the races at the school, including his own children’s at Oaklands; “It is vital to encouragechildren at an early age to get involved in sport. Our specialist sports staff across the Group ensure the children receive excellent coaching, and this often leads to success for our many teams in local and national competitions. Our Saturday morning and holiday sports clubs are very popular and many new inter-school competitions are being developed for 2014-2015”. www.oaktreeschools.co.uk n

today the tower features three stylish bedrooms, two with en-suite bathrooms and an additional family bathroom, a spacious lounge, high spec fully integrated kitchen and many modern features. Set over eight floors, the property comes with its own private lift, gated entrance and beautiful gardens and enjoys 360-degree, panoramic views across Essex into Kent and the City of London. “e Landmark Tower is a landmark in every sense,” says Hayley Hunt, director of Hunt Property Services. “It can be seen for miles around and is the focal point of what has become one of the most prestigious addresses in the south-east. “At its foot is an exclusive Virgin Active gym, created from the asylum’s former chapel, with a stunning pool and spa area
featuring the original stained glass windows. Whoever buys this property will own a part of history.” Originally an estate house with extensive grounds, the first documentary reference to Claybury is in a survey dated 1270, when it was a free tenement, measuring 176 acres, held by the local abbey at Barking. e estate was more or less constant in size until the early 19th century, when it increased to 440 acres, according to a historical account of the site by London Borough of Redbridge. Notable owners of Claybury include Sir omas White, founder of St. John’s College Oxford, who occupied the estate around 1560, and Oliver Cromwell, uncle of e Protector. Elizabeth I is said to have visited Claybury in 1597. In 1791 the well-known landscape

architect, Humphrey Repton, was hired to advise on the gardens. Repton remarked on the “profusely beautiful situation” of the Claybury Estate in his Red Book. He also quoted a Mr. Langford’s description of the area: “ere is a rich home view of the Counties of Essex, Middlesex, Surrey, Kent and Hertfordshire; the distant view is open and unbounded, and the scene is so varied that whilst every different object charms, every different view delights. e rich enamel’d meads, the irriguous streams, the lowing oxen and the battening sheep, all form a scene that is truly picturesque.” At the end of the 19th century, some of the estate grounds were developed as an asylum and in the late 20th century Claybury hospital became obsolete and fell into disrepair. e hospital closed in 1996
and the following year a public enquiry was held, which examined the development potential of the site. e inquiry concluded that the Borough and English Heritage views on the future development of the area were appropriate and reasonable. Following this decision by the Secretary of State, the Borough entered into discussions and subsequent negotiations with Crest Nicholson PLC, who redeveloped the site, creating 770 homes, including the Landmark Tower in what is now Repton Park, named after the famous 18th century landscape architect. Sole agents Hunt Property Services will host an open day for e Landmark Tower on Saturday, 12th July from 12:00 noon – 2:00 pm. ose interested in viewing this unique property, which is likely to be much

xperiences whilst growing up are fundamental to the personalities we develop in later life and our emotional well-being. Learning is about creating in a child’s mind a true curiosity about understanding why things happen, and what can be achieved if you look at things in a different way. Stimulating that curiosity, and guiding learning experiences throughout a child’s lifetime, is by far the best way to develop their innate thinking processes and abilities to problem solve. Encouragement, engagement and empathy in a framework where kindness to others is the norm, gives children the confidence to grow, develop their personal voice and face any challenge in a positive manner. Braeside was an early adopter of the all through school model dealing with 3-16 year olds and the Staff at Braeside have many years of experience in understanding and supporting the needs of girls on a daily basis. However, as children grow their strengths and needs become more apparent. Although many pupils stay at Braeside throughout their junior and senior education, we recognise that parents may wish to transfer their daughters to other independent schools at appropriate times such as 11+. We are fully confident that the high standards achieved throughout the junior school prepare them for the selection processes which other schools have in place at this time. is year again girls have been successful in achieving places at a variety of schools including City of London, Bancrofts, Chigwell and Forest at 11+ and we are proud of the contribution that we have made to their learning, in their formative years, as they leave us and move on. Helping to develop the whole child and providing outstanding foundations for lifelong learning is at the heart of what we do at Braeside and we have a proven track record with many Old Braesidians now leading fulfilling lives in a wide range of professional settings. If you feel that your daughter deserves the care and attention available to her in a school that combines traditional values and high standards of discipline with excellent teaching please do not hesitate to contact the School to enquire as to the availability of places throughout the school, arrange a visit or to discuss your individual requirements. VALENTINES MANSION THEN AND NOW
VALENTINES TODAY
V
alentines Mansion is more than 300 years old. e house was built in around 1696 for Elizabeth Tillotson and her family, after the death of her husband, the Archbishop of Canterbury. At that time the new brick house stood in open countryside, several miles from the edge of London. Valentines has changed hands many times since then. City merchant and banker Robert Surman bought the estate in 1720s and created the walled gardens, dovecote and grottoes. In the 1760s owner Sir Charles Raymond spent part of his fortune renovating Valentines, giving the house its Georgian appearance. Sarah Ingleby, the last private resident of Valentines, died in 1906 and the Council acquired the house in 1912. Since then, the mansion has been home to wartime refugees, a hospital, a public health centre, and a council housing department. After standing empty for 15 years, Valentines was restored in 2009 with Redbridge Council and Heritage Lottery funds. Today Valentines Mansion & Gardens is a popular attraction as well as a gorgeous venue for weddings, parties and corporate events. Valentines Mansion & Gardens has also become a sought after location for filming and has been the backdrop to popular TV shows such as e Great British Bake Off on a number of occasions. With exhibitions, creative workshops, family events, open studios and more there’s so much to enjoy at Valentines. Explore the period furnished rooms including Victorian kitchen, Georgian bedchamber and Regency Parlour and discover over 300 years of fascinating history. Relax and unwind in the gorgeous gardens at Valentines. Take a stroll around historic kitchen garden, the Old English walled garden, the Victorian rose garden and the Dry Garden, officially opened by Her Majesty e Queen on ursday 29 March 2012 and the first major piece of planting in Valentines park since the Rose Garden laid out by Sarah Ingleby in the 1870s. ere are also a whole host of unique features like the Long Water canal, rococo grottoes and dovecote. Valentines Gardens provide a wonderful setting for events throughout the year, from open-air theatre to farmers’ markets. During the time of Charles Raymond, a Black Hamburg Vine was planted at Valentines Mansion and in 1769 a cutting was taken to Hampton Court Palace where it can still be seen thriving today. A cutting from the Great Vine was re-planted at Valentines following our restoration - find this in the kitchen gardens. 20

Essex Girl is the new Alpha Girl and her ways and examples are emulated, followed and even seen as a benchmark for a certain, social etiquette. Probably started by the Spice Girls and their songs about female empowerment, their dress sense and confidence, Essex took their example and turned it into a trademark feature. Essex is leading the way locally and internationally. Being an Essex Girl now certainly has more status! e latest addition to the list of places which offer the TOWIE experience is a new Spanish restaurant chain opening in 22

Chigwell Road in Woodford Green! La Sala… featured in e Only Way is Marbs – our lovable and watchable TOWIE team take their antics, love dramas, trysts and turmoil to Marbella and do what they do best… La Sala brings the venue to Chigwell Road so we again, have another physical place to pay homage to the hit series. Rather like going to the Sugar Hut in Brentwood if you want that TOWIE experience. For fans of Coronation Street, Granada Studios have just launched a new tour (March 2014) for devotees. You can walk down that famous or rather infamous street and even take your photograph outside the Rovers Return. But for Essex, it’s not about a selfie outside a pub or tripping on the cobblestones – Essex trend-setters want more – it’s about party, dancing and dining! Living the experience rather than just observing it. Again, Essex sets the example which will always have a big dollop of emotional turmoil, passion and ultimately, a lot of fun.
La Sala is due to open in September 2014 and there will be 70 new jobs. e enterprise is backed by shareholders and footballers including David Bentley, Stephen Carr and Michael Brown, who all live local to the venue in Chigwell. Work has already started on the £1.5 million site of the former White Hart Inn. e restaurant will be offering Spanish and international cuisine with a bar/grill menu and outdoor heating for that authentic Spanish and sultry experience. So for those planning some al fresco dining, partying and staying up late – e Only Way is Essex! CHARITY CHAMPION FALLS THROUGH THE SKY WORDS CHRISTINE BAKER
LLOYD MOULDER, CO-FOUNDER OF DESIGNER BATHROOM SUPPLIER BATHWORKS, BASED IN WOODFORD GREEN, THROWS HIMSELF OUT OF PLANE ALL IN THE NAME OF CHARITY.
“Please let it be this time, I begged, as I pulled up at Headcorn Airfield in Kent on Sunday 29th June. Doing a skydive for charity comes with a double edged sword - part of you really wants to do it and is excited, the other part is scared. But, here I was for the third time of asking since April, due to weather delays, and still with a weather forecast looking bleak. I checked my watch on arrival at 0830 to find there were already plenty of people eager to get going. I went off to grab tea and toast and just as I was getting that down my throat the call came from my instructor Chris and we were off to get booted and suited. ere were about 14 of us in the plane, some jumping solo, plus a lady who would be filming my descent. It was chilly as we climbed up to 12,000 feet and all I could see was cloud. I was
26
J U LY 2 0 1 4
tightly strapped to Chris and realised this was it, from now on I was totally in his hands. He rocked me backwards just before we jumped and we were in freefall for 45 seconds at a speed of 120 mph - still in cloud. e cold made it hard to catch my breath and I couldn’t see the ground just swirling cloud. Next thing I knew Chris pulled the parachute and for another 5 or 6 minutes we drifted down, silently watching the ground below get ever nearer. It was awesome. By this time the adrenalin had kicked in – I felt joy and exhilarated. It was nothing like what I thought – it was much better! We landed well and immediately I wanted to do it again. I still do! I am so glad I have pictures and a video to look back on and considering I have never been great with heights before this, I now think how soon can I do it, or something like it, again?” When Lloyd signed up last year to raise £10,000 for Haven House Children’s Hospice little did he know that his fundraising challenges would include a skydive and white water
rafting. Celebrating 10 years in business with a charity challenge has been memorable and Lloyd’s commitment to the charity is outstanding. Haven House works with children and young people with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions who are unlikely to reach adulthood. Lloyd is edging closer to his £10,000 target but he still needs YOUR help! TOP TEN WAYS TO METABOLISE YOUR LIFE: 1. SLEEP Do you find your self burning the candle at both ends of the day. Late to bed and rising early? is could be doing more to harm your body than you think as research has found that not getting enough sleep seriously slows down your metabolism. Having between 7-8 hours of sleep a night and even going to bed before 10.30pm boosts your body and metabolism. 2. EAT BREAKFAST Eating a nutrient rich breakfast like oats, berries, nuts and seeds or omelette or energy booster such as banana, spinach, kiwi and orange shakes with greens kick starts your metabolism and gets your body going. Being full on healthy food regulates your body for the day ensuring your blood sugar levels are balanced to avoid craving the wrong types of food later in the day. 3: EXERCISE FREQUENTLY e more frequently you exercise, the higher your metabolic rate will be taking into account rest days - doing regular exercise keeps us burning calories around the clock long after work outs. Raising your heart beat through quick intense exercise such as High Intensity Initial Training (HIIIT training) such as quick intense exercises can jump start your metabolism. All our HYPOXI® devices raise your blood circulation which in turn, raises your metabolism, allowing the body to burn fat. Also independent studies have shown it to be up to 3 times more effective than regular training for targeted fat loss. 4. BUILD MUSCLE Muscle tissue is metabolically active and uses energy even to rest whereas fat does nothing at rest. Muscles move and require energy to do this. So increasing muscle tone, through exercise such as weight-lifting and cycling will dramatically increase your metabolism.
Both the HYPOXI® L250 and S120 combines fat activation therapy with effective fat burning training. Circulation to the fatty tissue in the problem area is increased through the application of alternate pressure. As a result, fatty acids located around the legs and buttocks are more readily metabolised in comparison to other parts of the body. 8 ADD SOME CHILLI Spice things up. Add a little chill or even cayenne pepper to your cooking which adds a touch of spice and also is known to boost your metabolism. So next time you are grilling chicken, add some cajan. Making a dip, why not make guacamole or have a good old curry. 9: CAFFEINE Coffee, Green tea or even regular morning breakfast tea; whatever your choice of caffeinated drink increase your metabolic rate. Caffeine is absorbed into the bloodstream quickly, speeding up your heart rate between 2-5 hours after consumption and giving you a metabolic boost. 10. LAUGH Add some humour to your day. As little as 10 minutes of laughter per day can burn energy and boost your endorphins, boosting your mood and making you feel good. Just another reason to have a good laugh. 5. DRINK WATER: Drinking water recommended 8 glasses a day, hydrates the body and speeds up the metabolism. e more water we drink, the more it speeds up digestion which burns calories and speeds up your metabolism.
REAL RESULTS FROM HYPOXI SOUTH WOODFORD
6: EAT PROTEIN Your body digests protein more slowly than fat or carbs, so you feel full longer (this is especially true when you have it for breakfast). Plus, it may also give your metabolism a bump. In a process called thermogenesis, your body uses about 10% of its calorie intake for digestion. So, because it takes longer to burn protein than carbs or fat, your body expends more energy absorbing the nutrients in a high-protein diet. e secret to slim figure is not too snack in between the meals as your body would burn your fat tissue from your body reserves rather than sugar from the food will consume so 3 meals a day excluding any snacks. 7: CARDIO Get the body moving, cycle, walk or run will speed up your metabolism for hours afterwards. Working out on one of our HYPOXI® devices such as the HYPOXI® Trainers S120 and L250 will be a great boost to your body because as well as performing moderate fat burning exercise on an exercise bike.
‘After the great results from using Hypoxi Bike Trainer I heard about Hypoxi Dermologie and decided to try it along with the Hypoxi Bike Trainer to help get rid of my ‘mum tum’! After just 6 sessions I have lost 7cm from my waist, 5 from my belly and 9 from my hips, and an incredible 35 all over, I am so pleased with the results and now feel I can look forward to wearing my bikini again rather than having to hide my stomach in a one piece! Thanks so much to Sylwia and the team! X’ (Michelle March 2013)

HEALTH b EAuTy
Changing Peoples' Lives... BY ASH PARMAR LONG LASTING DENTISTRY
O
ne of the important things a person needs to question his or her dentist is: “How long will the dental treatment last?” No one really enjoys having dental treatment. erefore, I feel treatment should be done to a high standard, with high quality materials and equipment so that it will be long lasting. is avoids repeat dentistry, more time off work and fewer injections in the future! HOW LONG DO FILLINGS LAST? Scientific research shows that amalgam (silver) or white fillings last 8-12 years on average. However, I have seen fillings that still look perfect after 25 years of service. ere are many factors involved. Firstly, the skill of the dentist and the quality of the dental fillings used. e patient’s care and hygiene standard is also very important – if someone brushes their teeth twice a day and flosses between teeth properly, then plaque (containing bacteria) is constantly being
removed, ensuring a healthy situation. e diet also affects the amount of decay that occurs – the higher the frequency and amount of sugar intake, the higher the chance of getting recurrent decay and further problems.
A high quality, long-lasting white filling
WHAT ABOUT GUM HEALTH? Gum disease is one of the main causes of teeth being extracted in adults. Plaque causes bone to be gradually lost around the roots of teeth. is causes them to get loose and they eventually need removal. is process is often painless and in some cases undiagnosed properly by the dentist. e only person that can then suffer is the individual! erefore, even if the teeth are restored properly, or someone has had very good cosmetic
dentistry, the long-term success will depend on having healthy and clean gums. HOW LONG DO PORCELAIN VENEERS LAST? Research published in 2013 answered this important question. If porcelain veneers are bonded to the outer enamel layer, then the success rates after twelve years is 98%. However, if porcelain veneers are bonded to the inner dentine layer, then the success rate drops to 68%. erefore, a skilled dentist and ceramist technician can create an attractive, strong and long-lasting smile if the treatment is planned properly.
Porcelain veneers - a healthy and attractive smile for many years
HOW SUCCESSFUL ARE DENTAL IMPLANTS LONG-TERM? Once again, dental implants are a long lasting treatment option with success rates of over 95% after 15 years. e long-term
success also depends if the person smokes, the standard of hygiene and the actual design of the implant supported crown and bridgework. SUMMARY “Prevention is better than cure” is a well-known saying. But how many people follow this advice properly? Do you and your family visit the dentist regularly? Do you have a very high standard of dental hygiene? Do you really care about how long your teeth will last in the mouth? Are you interested in the standard of dental care that is provided to you? ese are all important questions that you should ponder over carefully. At Smile Design By Ash, we care for our patients for the long-term. Our ethos is preventive dentistry and we offer a very high standard of general dental care for adults and children. If you want good quality, affordable private dentistry, look no further n

Unfortunately I inherited my father's mouth, and if I wasn't smiling, I looked miserable or very sad. To add to my sad looking expression my top lip was quite thin. I had thought about having something to improve my sad face for sometime. Frances came highly recommended from by mum's beauty salon Tessa Stevens Winchmore Hill, this gave me the confidence to book an appointment. My consultation with Frances put me completely at ease, she knows her stuff and understands what you want from a treatment. I had my treatment straight after my consultation, it was quick and painless and I immediately knew it was one of my best decisions. When you have a miserable expression it can make you feel miserable. After my treatment I feel my face has a softer look and I look how I feel, smiley and happy. Extremely HAPPY with the natural look, and have been asked if "I've been on holiday" and that "I look really well". Nobody can quite put their finger on what is different about me. I feel so pleased with the result, I can't put into words what it has none for my confidence. Thank you Frances for my happy expression. Terrie McCarthy

& TREATMENT FOR VARICOSE VEINS
health b eauty
LEADING CONSULTANT VASCULAR SURGEON MICHAEL GAUNT OPENS A NEW PRACTICE AT THE LONDON CLINIC IN HARLEY STREET AND DISCUSSES THE TREATMENT OF VARICOSE AND THREAD VEINS… WHAT ARE VARICOSE VEINS? Varicose veins are a common problem affecting at least 20% of the adult population in the UK. ey occur when small valves inside the veins stop functioning correctly. Rather than blood flowing effortlessly back towards the heart, the blood stagnates within the veins causing aching,
Michael Gaunt tiredness and discomfort. At first, problem veins may not be visible but symptoms occur. Sometimes patches of blue thread veins may be the earliest signs of an underlying problem. Eventually, the abnormal veins may become swollen, enlarged and varicose. is condition can be embarrassing and painful. Varicose veins are usually blue or dark purple in colour and may also be lumpy or twisted in appearance. While any vein can be affected, varicose veins most commonly develop in the legs and feet – predominantly because standing and walking can put pressure on the veins in the lower body. WHY SHOULD I CONSIDER HAVING THEM TREATED? In the developing stages, varicose veins and thread veins may be primarily a cosmetic problem. However, if ignored, the condition can deteriorate and a variety of complications can occur such as leg swelling, pigmentation of the skin around the ankles and ulcers. Occasionally, veins can burst causing bleeding, or the blood within the veins can clot leading to the painful condition of phlebitis or even deep vein thrombosis. People who use air travel for work or holidays may be at increased risk particularly if those flights are long haul. IS THIS TREATMENT JUST FOR WOMEN? Certainly not, it can affect men just as much as it can affect women. Men tend to cover their legs up more, so the problem may be hidden away and ignored, with some men only seeking treatment when their veins become swollen and complications start to occur. It is important to target varicose veins before they become a problem, as without medical treatment some conditions may worsen. WHAT IS INVOLVED IN TREATMENT AND IS IT PAINFUL? Fortunately, modern, minimally invasive treatments can often be
3 2 J U LY 2 0 1 4
performed under local anaesthetic as a walk-in, walk-out procedure. is leaves the patient with minimal postoperative pain with practically immediate return to normal activity. Michael Gaunt is a leading venous expert and has extensive knowledge of these procedures, having treated over 4,000 patients with the Endovenous Laser and ClariVein techniques. Both techniques are associated with considerably less pain, bruising and scarring than traditional stripping techniques. IS IT PERMANENT? Most modern techniques for treating varicose veins are associated with very good, long-term results. Patients are benefiting more and more from the advances in the treatments and the new procedures that are now available. HOW CAN I GET MY THREAD VEINS TREATED? Not all visible veins in the legs are varicose veins. Small veins underneath the skin, known as thread veins, spider veins or reticular veins, may become prominent due to a variety of different reasons. ey can cause symptoms of discomfort, itching and irritation as well as being unsightly. Often the appearance of thread veins is due to the effect of daily wear and tear on delicate skin and local treatments are effective. However, sometimes thread veins are an indication of underlying varicose veins which may not be visible on examination. Treatment of the thread veins will not be successful unless the underlying problem - for example the varicose veins - has been corrected first. erefore, a thorough venous assessment is necessary before initiating any local treatment for thread veins. is could include injection microsclerotherapy or VeinWave therapy. Once underlying varicose veins have been treated or excluded, local treatment of the thread veins is much more likely to be successful. VeinWave therapy is also very effective at removing unsightly facial red veins affecting the nose and cheeks. ONCE I’VE DECIDED TO HAVE TREATMENT, WHAT IS THE NEXT STEP? Make an appointment where we can assess your condition and discuss potential treatment and steps forward. ese no obligation consultations are offered at e London Clinic in Harley Street. EAT WELL, FEEL BETTER Did you know good food is good for your mood? It's not just your body you're feeding - your mind is affected by what you eat, too. Also blotchy dull lifeless skin, bloated chin, all problems associated with poor diet and not enough H20. ere is increasing evidence of a link between what we eat and how we feel. is is called the ‘food – mood’ connection. How we feel influences what we choose to eat or drink – and a healthy diet can protect our mental health. HOW DOES FOOD AFFECT MY MOOD? BLOOD SUGAR Glucose from the carbohydrate-containing foods we eat provides the brain’s main source of fuel. Without this fuel, we can’t think clearly. Some carbs are better than others. Sugar, white pasta and biscuits will only give you a short burst of energy. You'll feel tired and grumpy when the sugar high wears off. "Complex carbohydrates", such as whole grains, beans and vegetables, are a better choice because they give you sustained energy. If you eat lots of sugary foods, fizzy drinks and stimulants such as coffee, tea or alcohol, your blood sugar levels go up and down. is can make you irritable, anxious and dizzy. It can also lead to poor concentration and aggressive behaviour.

PROTEIN Proteins found mainly in meat, fish and soya products are broken down in the body to be used as amino acids, which are vital to good mental health. Brain messengers are made in the body from the proteins that we eat. If we don't get enough amino acids this can lead to feelings of depression, apathy, lack of motivation or tension. GOOD FATS Essential fats, found mainly in oily fish, seeds and nuts, cannot be made within the body, so we have to get them from food. Sixty per cent of the brain is made of fat, and the fats we eat directly affect its structure. A lack of omega-3 fatty acids has been linked to various mental health problems, including depression and lack of concentration. BRAIN FOOD: TOP TIPS Don't skip meals. Eat three meals a day with two ‘healthy’ snacks (for example fruit or yoghurt) in between. Eat breakfast within an hour of waking up. Never skip breakfast. Try to have at least five portions of fruit and vegetables every day. Try to drink 6-8 glasses of water every day. Q&A Q I have rough pimples on the backs of my arms and I'm feeling conscious about showing my arms in the summer, what can I do? A It sounds to me like you’re suffering from a very common skin complaint called keratosis Pilaris, affecting around 1/3 people in the UK, thought to be caused by a hormonal imbalance and often runs in families. I advise gentle exfoliation up to three times a week and the use of a daily glycolic cream until symptoms are better then use twice a week to maintain. For more severe cases glycolic acid peels can be administered by a qualified practitioner.

HAY FEVER HELL ay fever, also known as seasonal allergic rhinitis, affects one in five people in the UK. According to John Collard, clinical director of Allergy UK, hay fever is a type of allergy. It happens when your body makes antibodies in response to certain triggers, such as pollen. It’s most common in children and, particularly, teenagers, but you can develop hay fever at any age. The symptoms usually include sneezing, itchy and watery eyes, and stuffy nose.
H
What causes hay fever? In Britain, hay fever is mainly caused by grass pollen. Around 95% of hay fever sufferers are allergic to grass pollen. Tree pollen can cause hay fever too. Around a quarter of hay fever sufferers are allergic to tree pollen. Mould spores and weed pollen can also trigger symptoms. The pollens that cause hay fever vary from person to person and region to region. The amount of pollen in the air will affect how bad your hay fever is. There’s more likely to be more pollen in the air on hot, dry, windy days than on cool, damp, rainy days. Research shows that pollution, such as cigarette smoke or car exhaust fumes, also makes some allergies worse. When is hay fever worst? The time of year at which you begin to experience hay fever symptoms depends on the types of pollen you’re allergic to. Trees release their pollen in March to early May while grasses release pollen from late May to early August. Weeds and certain shrubs release their pollen in late summer. The hay fever season can therefore last from March to October. And if you’re unlucky enough to be allergic to more than one type of pollen, you may only have just two or three months without symptoms in the winter before the cycle starts again. Tips to relieve hay fever Avoiding exposure to pollen is the best way to reduce the allergic symptoms of hay fever: Keep windows shut at night and first thing in the morning Stay indoors when the pollen count is high (between 50 and 150) Wear wraparound sunglasses. Put some petroleum jelly just inside your nostrils to trap some of the pollen. Don’t mow the grass or sit in fields or large areas of grass. Wash your hands and face regularly. Avoid exposure to other allergens, such as pet fur, or environmental irritants, such as insect sprays or tobacco smoke. Hay fever treatment As with most allergies, the best way to control hay fever is to avoid the triggers. However, it’s difficult to avoid pollen, particularly during the summer. Even straightforward hay fever can be debilitating, causing runny eyes, sleepless nights, bunged-up nose and headaches. A range of over-thecounter products can treat the symptoms of hay fever, including tablets, nasal sprays, eye drops and creams. Antihistamines are the usual treatment for the main symptoms, such as itchy, watery eyes and runny nose, while steroid nasal sprays are the main treatment for a stuffy nose. Hay fever in pregnancy Hay fever during pregnancy can be a particular problem. Hormonal changes make nasal congestion more common during pregnancy, and this often gets worse during hay fever season. Pregnant women are also advised not to take some hay fever medicines. Hay fever and asthma Speak to your GP or pharmacist before you decide on a hay fever treatment. It’s particularly important to speak to your GP if you have asthma. Hay fever often makes asthma symptoms worse. If this happens, you may need to increase the dosage of your asthma medication. 3 6 J U LY 2 0 1 4

“YOU’VE GIVEN ME BACK MY CONFIDENCE” WORDS BY DEE BROWN

edicated mother and grandmother Valerie, first visited Smile Design by Ash in July 2012 on the recommendation of her husband. Valerie was concerned with the health and condition of her teeth and wanted to avoid pain and problems in the future. An old porcelain bridge left Valerie feeling self conscious and anxious of what the future held. After a comprehensive assessment it was clear that there were many underlying problems in Valerie’s mouth that needed to be addressed. Fast forward to 2014 and Valerie has a beaming smile to match her beautiful personality. “I have just completed my Smile Makeover and can honestly say that at no point did I ‘dread’ my appointment, and the whole experience has left a totally different outlook, for me, to dentistry.” Valerie had an extensive treatment plan which included the extraction of a tooth and replacement using a dental implant. “At no time did I have any pain – and I had a lot of treatment! Even if it was necessary to have an injection, my gums were numbed first with surface anaesthetic, which resulted in the injection being completely pain free. Such relief! I had to have an implant – and honestly nodded off during the treatment – again, no pain!” After all the health and foundation treatment was completed, to improve Valerie’s smile she opted for a 10-unit Smile Makeover consisting of crowns, veneers and bridges, as required. “e care that Ash took to ensure my new teeth looked as natural as possible, helping me to choose the correct colour and advising me on the different shapes and styles of teeth was beyond the call of duty – he really cares that his patients are happy with the result.” Valerie is now a regular patient at the practice and maintains her beautiful new smile with six monthly professional hygiene appointments and yearly dental examinations. “Now that my Smile Makeover is completed I feel I can

TAKE THE PLUNGE WHEN IT COMES TO MAKING A DECISION THE HEAD OFTEN RULES THE HEART, AND IN THE MAJORITY OF CASES WE ARE FOUR TIMES MORE LIKELY TO MAKE A DECISION BY WEIGHING UP THE PROS AND CONS, THAN GO WITH OUR INSTINCTS.
W
hen it comes to making a decision the head often rules the heart, and in the majority of cases we are four times more likely to make a decision by weighing up the pros and cons, than go with our instincts. Heels or flats? We make tons of quick decisions every day, but others we linger over for days. According to research commissioned by swimming pool company Origin Leisure, we find it easy to make really big decisions, but then agonise over the smaller details. We trust our gut for life-changing decisions, but ironically we then sweat the small stuff. In fact, over a third of us admit to knowing instantly that our current home was ‘the one’, but it then often takes us days, weeks or even years to decide on improvements such as installing a new kitchen or adding a conservatory. When it comes to home improvement, it doesn’t come much more luxurious than an indoor swimming pool, and while it’s important to consider all the details, the research showed that spending too much time agonising over the decision can be counterproductive. Gary Taylor of Origin Leisure said: “In our 30 year experience we’ve found that people wish they’d spent less time deliberating and more time enjoying the fruits of their decision making. If it will make you and your family happy, just get on,

listen to your instinct and enjoy it!” For anybody wanting to take the plunge with the ultimate home improvement, here are the answers to the key questions to help you make your decision. HOW MUCH IS IT GOING TO COST? e cost depends on a multitude of factors, from the size and shape of the pool, right down to the choice of materials. An indoor pool can cost from £135,000 to £250,000 and upwards, depending on your design. A good place to start is to decide on a budget and ask your swimming pool company to tailor the design to the amount you’d like to spend. WHAT ARE THE RUNNING COSTS? Don’t forget to factor in the weekly, monthly and yearly expenses for heating, chemicals and maintenance. e ongoing costs will depend entirely on the design of your pool, how it’s used by your family, and your choice of heat source. An experienced swimming pool company will advise you on the ongoing costs and offer advice on keeping them as low as possible. HOW ECO FRIENDLY IS A SWIMMING POOL? Whether or not the swimming pool will be eco friendly is an important factor to some homeowners. If you’re concerned about the environmental impact of the pool, or simply want to lower running costs, eco models are available. Origin Leisure’s

HOUSE GARDEN Eco Pool House incorporates the very latest building materials for energy efficiency to reduce running costs once the pool is complete. DO I NEED PLANNING PERMISSION? Adding an Origin swimming pool to your home has never been easier! Changes to permitted development rights mean you may not require planning permission at all - even if planning permission was previously denied. Use a specialist swimming pool company to guide you through the procedure, advising you on the necessary steps to take, which will speed up the process significantly. HOW LONG WILL THE PROJECT TAKE? e length of time it takes to install a swimming pool depends entirely on the design; the size, shape and type of swimming pool will vary the timescale from project to project. It’s best to allow at least 20 weeks for the pool to be completed. WHAT SWIMMING POOL DESIGN IS BEST FOR ME AND MY FAMILY? While pool houses were previously simple pine chalets, today indoor swimming pool design has evolved and we now expect the same style, quality and finish in the pool house as we would in our own homes. But, with so much choice it’s no wonder we’re left scratching our heads when making a decision. Origin Leisure has designed a range of popular indoor swimming pool models that can be tailored for you. WHO WILL OVERSEE EACH STAGE OF THE PROJECT? It helps to talk to a swimming pool company that can oversee the whole project from start to finish. is way, you will have one point of contact and don’t need to project manage any of the design or building process. HOW MUCH MAINTENANCE IS REQUIRED? e after care for a swimming pool is easy, but for those who’d like a helping hand, the experts at Origin Leisure also offer a full maintenance service, giving you as much or as little help as you need to maintain the upkeep of your pool. THE BENEFITS OF A HOME SWIMMING POOL TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY While taking the plunge may seem daunting, making the decision brings measurable benefits. A swimming pool from Origin Leisure provides new ways of having fun, spending precious time together as a family, even making a ‘staycation’ seem more appealing. e additional space is perfect for entertaining and socialising with friends and family, and the design can include a kitchen, seating or bar. Access to a pool right on your doorstep means it’s easy to swim every day in the privacy of your own home, either to maintain a healthy lifestyle or simply as a space to relax. Whatever your decision, the experts at Origin Leisure are available to help create your home swimming pool. With over 30 years experience creating beautiful domestic swimming pools, the company manages every stage of the project from start to finish, giving you the confidence and freedom to enjoy your decision. MOTORS
FIRST DRIVE: BMW M4 BY MATT KIMBERLEY
W
hat's new?: ere's a great deal that's new about the M4, not least the name. Previously you could have an M3 in coupe, saloon and convertible formats, but now the M3 is saloon only. e M4 takes on the mantle as the coupe will be the most popular model by far. You get a stack of bespoke exterior parts to add menace as well as a bit of downforce and there's 85kg of weight saved over the old car with bits like the carbonfibre roof, strut brace and a lightweight driveshaft. But the biggest news is under the bonnet. e naturally aspirated V8 has been binned in favour of a twin turbocharged six-cylinder unit for the first time on an M car. As usual, it's for the sake of efficiency: the new unit has more power and torque than the old car but emissions are down 26%. Looks and image: As you'd expect, the transformation to M4 brings with it some extra aggression. ere are big air vents at the front, a deep chin spoiler, flared wheelarches and big wheels as standard, and the result is a terrific-looking thing from pretty much any angle. Colour choice is another matter. e eye-catching metallic yellow shown here is certainly not for the faint-hearted, while more moderate shades provide a more stealthy look. Space and practicality: e transformation to M4 gives almost nothing away to the standard car, so sadly you've got no excuse for leaving the loved ones behind in a haze of tyre smoke. Up front, there are excellent sports seats, plenty of head and legroom even for taller drivers and you can fit adults in the back seats too. e boot is also impressive with 445 litres, and sensibly it has a good luggage net to stop everything flying about - which it would otherwise most certainly do. Behind the wheel: Like all the current M cars, the M4 gives you a multitude of options to play with, offering three settings for the engine, suspension, gearbox and steering. With everything set to either Comfort or Efficiency, the M4 does a pretty convincing impression of a bog-standard 4 Series. It rides well and is quiet bar the odd growl from the engine when you poke it. But frankly that's a waste of a performance car. Turn everything up to the middle Sport mode and instantly it feels more alert. Squeeze the throttle and the response is instant, that turbocharged engine offering up strong torque regardless of engine revs, and there's a pleasing metallic note from the exhaust thanks to some clever electronic enhancement. Push the M4 hard and the grip is hugely impressive, the optional carbon ceramic brakes very strong and its overall composure superb. It's a genuine M car, no doubt. Value for money: Compared to the outgoing car, the M4 has had a notable upgrade in the amount of standard kit. You now get 19-inch wheels, Xenon headlights, the adaptive M suspension and things like folding electric mirrors as standard where previously they were options. at's not to say you can't go a bit nuts with the options; the desirable carbon ceramic brakes are £6,250 but the M Laptimer app is free to download at least. Who would buy one?: ere are two main types of people that will want an M4 on their driveway. Firstly there are the enthusiasts who know the history of the M cars and want a performance car that has motorsport links and can cut it on the track as well as on the road. e other type are the badge snobs who want that M badge - and possibly one of the more eye-catching colours - to let everyone know they've arrived. 54

Auberge du Lac A CULINARY DELIGHT
H
oused in Brocket Hall’s former hunting lodge, Auberge du Lac enjoys an idyllic lakeside setting overlooking the beautiful 543 acre country estate and the Hall itself. Whether it is al fresco dining in summer at the water’s edge, or an intimate environment in the winter months, Auberge du Lac provides the right mood for every occasion. With a beautiful lounge, picturesque terrace and a host of tastefully decorated private dining rooms, capable of seating from 2 to 30 guests, the restaurant regularly caters for private dinners, ladies lunches, weddings, birthday parties and other celebrations. Head Chef Marcus McGuiness took the reigns in October and has been exciting guests with his menus since.

J U LY 2 0 1 4
Before his time at Auberge du Lac, Marcus had spent six years working alongside Claude Bosi at his two Michelin star Mayfair restaurant Hibiscus, where he was Head Chef and Bosi’s right-hand man. Before moving to London, Marcus spent two years as the sous chef at two Michelin star restaurant, La Champignon Sauvage in Cheltenham. Under Marcus’s direction, the restaurant will be serving lunch and evening a la carte options, as well as his signature six course tasting menus, all with an emphasis on affordable fine-dining. Menu examples include, Roast Orkney Scallops, Crushed Peas, Pea Puree & Up-hill Ham; Côte de Boeuf, Roscoff Onions, Glazed Short Rib & Bone Marrow and to finish, Malt Vanilla Ice cream, Salted Caramel & Malt Madeleine.
To match the impressive menus, Auberge du Lac has over 750 bins on its extensive wine list. Sommelier Derya Demirci de la Fuente, who has trained at Escuela Española de Cata in Madrid and worked as a sommelier for 5 years, will pair guest’s wine to match each course perfectly. Auberge du Lac is the perfect destination for a romantic meal, celebration, business lunch or weekend treat. Overnight accommodation is available within the Brocket Hall estate, in the 16-bedroomed Melbourne Lodge, a converted Georgian coach house. CHEFS Q&A Describe your style Modern British. I grew up in Oxfordshire in a family of cooks. I have always loved food and am as British as they come! I try to use seasonal ingredients and local produce where possible. I really enjoy taking simple ingredients and turning them into something that tastes great. How do you decide your menu? I go with the seasons and basically choose whatever takes my fancy. Which menu dish do you most enjoy preparing? I really enjoy making the Dark Chocolate Fondant that’s on the menu at the moment. I very much enjoy pastry work and spent the first three of my formative years in pastry and love to get back to my roots. What ingredient is most important to your cooking? I am going to have to say three ingredients for this – fat, sugar and salt. Why? Because they make everything taste better. No chef could work without them. What’s been your best culinary idea? I couldn’t pin down a particular idea but stumbling across foraging has changed my cooking. I love being able to go out for a walk, find wild herbs, plants and mushrooms and take them back to the kitchen and make something extraordinary out of them. Who did you train under and what did they teach you? I first trained under Gus Ashenford at Chavignol in Chipping Norton. He taught me the classic French techniques that I enjoyed using on local British produce. My time with Claude Bosi and Hibiscus in London taught me finesse in finishing my dishes. What’s your prediction for the next food trend? I don’t really have an opinion on food trends and don’t follow them. I am more interested in the seasons and what makes great tasting food. What’s in your fridge at home? Bottles of baby milk! I have a 5 month old daughter at home. Favourite quick meal? Fajitas. And if I am cheating, it has to be Old El Paso. Top three tips for amateur chefs? Come prepared with lots of passion and enthusiasm. Get yourself a set of really sharp knives. Use your common sense! Best cookbook? sTAPlEFoRD TAWNEy once inside the property we were drawn to the spacious areas the house provided, we could also see immediately that we would be taking on a tremendous amount of work, as the property was literally a shell. This did not deter us from wanting to live here as we could see the potential to make it into our dream home, we acquired the residence via a tender process and were delighted when we were told that our tender had been successful in securing the property in our favour. This residence has given us such a spacious and flexible home that has adapted to our changing needs quite effortlessly. For example there is a section of the house which we class as the annexe, as it can work as a separate area to the main household if one should need, this is ideal for visiting guests, a live in nanny, staff accommodation or space for the teenagers of the family, when they want more independence.

THE CAVENDISH COLLECTION RECEIVES AWARD WIN AT THE 2014 LONDON EVENING STANDARD NEW HOMES AWARDS
MARTIN HIGGINS ACCEPTING THE AWARD
T
his week, Higgins Homes celebrated their outstanding award win at the annual Evening Standard New Homes Awards. e private developer walked away with a win for their collection of bespoke family homes at e Cavendish Collection in Chigwell in the category of Best Family Houses valued in excess of £1.5 million. Having competed against a number of established developers from across London and the South East to receive this recognition, Martin Higgins, Director at Higgins Homes, commented: “Working within such an exacting market, it is imperative that we get the product right every time and at e Cavendish Collection we appear to have done exactly that. ese family homes blend perfectly with the architecture of the surrounding older properties yet provide an ideal living space for the modern family. For Higgins Homes to be recognised amongst such a high calibre of competition is a great achievement and we are extremely pleased to have received this award.” Located in the picturesque home county of Chigwell, Essex, e Cavendish Collection is a premium collection of five beautifully refined, detached houses. One home remains available for sale priced at £2,000,000. A former show home, ‘e Blenheim’ is a fully dressed, 6 bedroom house arranged over three, spacious floors. Covering a total of 4101.16 sq ft, this family home features three interconnected living rooms and a private study on the ground floor, professionally designed kitchen, utility room, four bedrooms -

including the elegant master suite with vaulted ceiling - and on the second floor are two further bedrooms and another study. A tandem garage also sits alongside the property. Now in its 23rd year, e London Evening Standard New Homes Awards are recognised as ‘e Oscars’ of the property world and celebrates the skills of the new homes industry. e awards champion clever design and creative solutions that solve the challenges of current living standards. A member of the judging panel commented: “ese homes reflected true consideration for the local market. ey are they tucked away in a quiet cul-de-sac offering complete security plus they have been designed, constructed and internally decorated to an exceptionally high standard with today’s modern family in mind. e Blenheim, a large six bedroom house also offers the flexibility of separate accommodation on the top floor, providing additional living space for older children, grandparents, or stay at home nannies as well as optional study space for parents working from home. It was this attention to detail that helped e Cavendish Collection to lead by example and achieve such recognition.” For more information about the last remaining home at The Cavendish Collection visit www.higginshomes.co.uk or call a sales advisor on 020 8501 3765 n
