he centrepiece of Ascot’s year, Royal Ascot, is arguably the world’s most famous race meeting. First organised in 1711 at the behest of Queen Anne, and attended by British Monarchs ever since, each day of Royal Ascot traditionally begins with the Royal Procession, in which The Queen along with her family and guests parade in front of the packed grandstands in their horse-drawn carriages. The five-day meeting attracts some of the best horses from around the globe. With polo grounds in Richmond, only eight miles from Hyde Park Corner, Ham Polo Club is the last remaining polo club in Greater London. Founded in 1926, HPC has an established and distinguished reputation and the club’s 88th year will be another unmissable season. To commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the Great War, Arts Partnership Surrey commissioned Ochre Print Studios in Guildford to produce four original screen prints. The resulting submissions from artists across Surrey and beyond filled the studio and covered a wide range of local themes based on impact and legacy of WW1 on Surrey communities and families. Guildford Fringe Festival is Surrey’s premier open-access, multi-arts festival which incorporates all genres of art including theatre, music, comedy, dance, exhibitions, talks, burlesque, film, cabaret and more! The festival, supported by Guildford Borough Council and Experience Guildford, runs throughout the month of July, and it promises to be the best yet.

14 JUNE RARE PLANT FAIR AT BIRTLEY HOUSE
An exciting exhibition of contemporary ceramics by RCA graduate Emma Finch. Emma’s work chronicles the ever-changing face of London; the built, rebuilt, remodeled and reused. She captures this in drawings, collage, print and photography; each telling a story but also, as a form of direct documentation. Emma’s enthusiasm and curiosity for printed images and how they fit onto three-dimensional forms, in combination with mark making, painting and colour, has developed throughout her studio practice. By screen-printing and painting directly onto slabs of clay, Emma builds up full colour images to achieve rich polychromatic ceramic surfaces. These are constructed into forms that speak about volume, space and reference the familiar associations of domestic forms that are destabilised because of the shift up in scale. 10am to 5pm, Free. New Ashgate Gallery Waggon Yard Farnham GU9 7PS
Work continues to bring the neglected areas of Birtley House back into use and to develop new ideas within the traditional structure. In recent years the rose garden has been redeveloped, along with updating areas such as the ‘Long Walk’ herbaceous borders. Entrance is £4.00 per adult and includes the gardens. Children under 16 Free. Refreshments available. Well-controlled dogs on short leads are allowed in the fair and gardens. Birtley House, Bramley Nr. Guildford GU5 0LB JUNE 2015 11

RHS Hampton Court Palace
Flower Show Preview
E
njoy six days of green-fingered fun with a host of horticultural displays and activities in the grounds of the royal palace. The 25th year of the world’s largest annual flower show will bring a wealth of fantastic features, all celebrating communities, great food and beautiful plants. With the Conceptual, Show and Summer categories joined by World and Historic Gardens, there is an eclectic mix of designs and themes to fill you with wonder…..
Fabulous Show Feature RHS Anniversary Maze
The anniversary maze is a magical new addition to this year’s show to celebrate its silver anniversary. Packed with beautiful planting and immersive elements, the maze is the largest feature at the show, covering 900sqm, and 300 metres of Cornus mas hedging supplied by QuickHedge. It links to the world-famous maze at Hampton Court, and the bedding labyrinth featured at the first show in 1990.
Sensation and perception
The Conceptual Gardens are more evocative than ever. This year six gardens have the theme of Sensations with designers asked to create immersive and interactive installations. There is also a seventh garden, which is a wildcard garden based on a concept from outside the scope of the theme. Gabrielle Evans brings a piece of Africa to Hampton Court, with her thought-provoking African Vision: Malawi Garden, inspired by the charity’s firsthand experience of seeing the devastation of the natural landscape caused by monocropping and chemical fertilisers. John Humphreys and Andy Hyde’s Equilibrium represents the balance between the opposing forces of sun, moon and sea and their effect on the shingle beach.
Show Garden inspiration
The Macmillan Legacy Garden is designed as a community space which could be attached to a Macmillan Care centre. Ian Hammond’s Squires Garden Centre: Town Garden celebrates Squire’s Garden Centres’ 25th year at the show. Catherine Chenery and Barbara Harfleet’s garden for Unique Rare Chromosome Support Group aims to raise awareness of rare chromosome disorders. For the The Henri Le Worm: Community Garden, Chris Collins and Oli Blanc will show kids how much can be gained from going outside and connecting with nature, 42 JUNE 2015
and the centre also has an outdoor kitchen. This garden will educate, entertain and fire imaginations. A Growing Obsession designed by Wardrop and Stevenson is an elegant restored ladies’ flower garden of refined formality and Victorian drama. It can be admired from the terrace and ‘promenaded’ through to appreciate the geometry and harmonious colours of the bedding.
Up on the roof
The Summer Gardens display a variety of ideas, including a roof garden, a healing garden and a rice field. Designed as a demonstration garden for an educational organisation, VaRa Garden Design’s Foundations for Growth, sponsored by Provender Nurseries and Capel Manor College, has spaces for students to be inspired, to learn, to reflect and to plan their future path. QEF: A Different Point of View is offered by Juliet Hutt, which is inspired by people with acquired brain injuries and the continuing need to look at the problems they face in new ways. The Wellbeing of Women Garden is a feminine, thoughtful and calm space, while CouCou Design’s Living Landscapes: City Twitchers offers ideas for those wanting somewhere to sit and relax, grow their own edible plants, bird watch and encourage wildlife
The Conceptual Gardens are more evocative than ever A little bit of history
Botanica World Discoveries: Winnie the Pooh begins his journey is a garden showing where A A Milne, in his woodland shelter, created the much-loved bear. The famous bridge where Winnie and Piglet play Poohsticks can be seen – a garden of childhood make believe and adult creativity. The Tea Party by Charlie Bloom celebrates the 150th anniversary of Lewis Carroll’s masterpiece, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. A celebration of colour, texture and shape, with the Great British love of a tea party in all its eccentric glory. At the world’s largest annual flower show you’ll also find an abundance of food and drink venues. Dr. Peter Forrester, Dr.Mark Aitken and Ms Helen McEvoy will use their medical expertise to recommend treatments that are right for you, endorsed by scientific research and importantly are proven to be effective and safe. Wouldn’t it be dreamy to have a weekly appointment at the spa for a long, relaxing facial? By Katie Wright, Press Association
Unmask your potential THE WRINKLE SMOOTHER
Sheet masks - face-shaped patches saturated with complexion-boosting serums - originated in the home of so many skin innovations, South Korea. Unpeel the two transparent parts of the SkinPep Collagen Growth Factor Face Mask, £19.99 for five (www.skinpep.com), and smooth them over your face for 30-40 minutes for a plumping, peptide-rich skin infusion.
THE FACE FIRMER
Promising to mimic the action of Botox, Temple Spa’s The Contourist, £50 for six masks (Selfridges or TempleSpa. com), is an ultra-firming sheet mask that tones, tightens and fades pigmentation. With a chin strap and loops that hook over the ears, it’s slightly scary looking, so make sure you’re not expecting any visitors when you pop it on.
W
hile that kind of luxury remains an occasional treat for most of us, a bit of DIY indulgence is well within reach - and can make a real difference too. Because they get longer to seep beneath the surface, the active ingredients in masks work their magic where it’s needed most, while giving you instantly visible results at the same time. And right now, there’s a slew of new soak-in saviours targeting everything from sullen skin and frazzled hair to clogged pores and acne. So block out an evening, light a scented candle, run a bath and get ready to mask in glory...
THE BRIGHTENER
The latest addition to Origins’ line-up of the UK’s bestselling masks is the Dr Andrew Weil for Origins Mega-Bright Dark Spot Correcting Night Mask, £48 (www. origins.co.uk), a leave-on cream packed with vitamin-rich botanical extracts and dark spot-fading actives. Massage it in, leave for 10 minutes then rub in any excess so nothing goes to waste.
THE PORE PERFECTER
There’s a reason charcoal has been a trusted cosmetic ingredient for generations - powdered carbon (that’s really all it is) loves sucking up icky stuff from our skin. Likewise, Clinique’s Pore Refining Solutions Charcoal Mask, £22 (www.clinique.co.uk), works like a Hoover on pores and mattifies oily patches. 52 JUNE 2015
THE SCALP SOOTHER
Tea tree oil is well-known for its calming properties, but apply too much and it’ll really sting. The Australian Bodycare Scalp Treatment Mask, £14.50 (www.qvcuk.com), gets the blend just right, resulting in a cooling sensation that soothes itching and flakiness. Apply when your hair is dry and leave overnight for maximum effectiveness.
THE HAIR HYDRATOR
Bleach, heat and stress can really take it out of your hair, but a weekly moisturising mask will counteract the damage. New from the Pantene Expert Collection, the Hydra Intensify Masque, £6.99 (www.boots.com), floods locks with a triple whammy of nourishing nutrients in just three minutes.
THE SPOT STOPPER
Unclogging pores and reducing sebum are key to preventing spots. From the new acne-

THE BOTANICAL BOOSTER
New to the UK, French brand Aloree uses chlorophyll, the key component of photosynthesis in plants (ring any bells from biology lessons?) that also has anti-ageing properties. The pearlescent green Skin Rescue Radiant Face Mask, £24 (www.pravera.co.uk), oxygenates cells and leaves your complexion with a subtle shimmer.
THE HYALURONIC HERO
Another sheet mask, Indeed Laboratories Hydraluron Moisture Boosting Mask, £19.99 for four (www.boots. com), is soaked in moisture-maximising hyaluronic acid. In 15 minutes, the key ingredient seeps in deep, leaving your face fresh, plumped and dewy.
THE TAN ENHANCER
A thorough exfoliation is a must before your slap on the fake tan, and James Read’s Enhance Tan Perfecting Enzyme Peel Mask, £15 (www.johnlewis.com), does just that. The clear gel smoothes on and dries, and then peels off 20 minutes later taking a layer of dead skin cells with it.
THE POST-SUN QUENCHER
To stop your tan fading faster than that blissed-out holiday feeling on your first day back at work, a major dose of moisture is in order. Phytomer Sun Soother After-Sun Mask for Face, £25.25 (FeelUnique.com), drenches skin with hydration and protects against the free radicals that threaten your tan’s long-term potential.

The toil of pounding the pavements during training had left the skin on my feet hard and ugly, and in need of some TLC before summer - and the associated sandal-wearing - arrives. Battery-powered, small and very easy to use, I was really impressed with the Micro-Pedi. It files feet quickly and, most crucially for me, doesn’t hurt. Choosing A Theme For Your Kitchen
classic shaker style kitchen. The floor plan in a shaker kitchen is open, with cabinets often lining the sides of the kitchen. An island in the middle can make an attractive and very useful addition and can be created for you in classic shaker styling. This dignified, elegant kitchen is never excessive but nevertheless stunning to look at and work in.
Contemporary kitchens
The sleek look that comes hand in hand with a contemporary kitchen will provide instant gratification. The practical use of space allows for more movement in the kitchen and provides easier access to storage areas and necessary equipment as you prepare those mouth-watering dishes. Also, contemporary colours provide a more open feeling which adds into the functional atmosphere of the space. That is, in essence, one of the great benefits of contemporary custom kitchen designs; the array of options available. No matter what your exact tastes and preferences, there is a contemporary kitchen design that will meet all your specific needs.
French country kitchen
This look combines rustic country charm with a grand, chateau-like sophistication. Opt for units in an aged shade of parchment or dove grey featuring beautifully-turned, bevelled detailing. Team with natural stone or slate on the floor, black or cream enamel Aga, chunky wooden worktops and tiled splashbacks in earthy shades. This also works well with freestanding features, so choose an antique-style armoire for displaying tableware and an island unit with matching hood as a focal point. Hang copper pans on a black wrought iron pot hanger and accessorise the room with rustic oil bottles and richly coloured earthenware.
Shaker Style kitchen
The clean lines and rustic feel of a shaker kitchen means they appeal to those who adore both contemporary design and a classic look and feel. The round knobs, pillow-fronted doors and beautiful woods are features that epitomise the

Retro Kitchen
A retro kitchen is styled in a way that includes elements that imitate kitchen trends of the past. You might find psychedelic colours that hark back to the 1970s, or even appliances based on those found in American households of the 1950’s. Adding a touch of retro fun to your new kitchen can be a great way to give character to the space, and is sure to provide a few nostalgic talking points.
LAYOUT
Your kitchen should be designed for whatever you are likely to want to do in it. There are people who want to frame pictures, wash dogs, even do keep fit in their kitchens. If you’re remodelling from scratch and have a large space, think open plan and multi-purpose – somewhere to eat, work, cook and relax. Kitchen experts John Lewis of Hungerford advise thinking hard about your lifestyle. “The vivacious party animal” needs a U-shaped kitchen with island in the middle and open ended for social gathering, for example. “The Good Life fans” prefers a big L-shaped layout with a range-style cooker, large fridge and freezer and large farmhouse table. “The London weekday bolthole” needs galley-style layout with plenty of wall storage cabinets because most of the below surface cupboards are filled with appliances and gadgets. Meanwhile the “pony club set” loves a free-standing pantry offset to a wrap-around kitchen with peninsula and, of course, an Aga.
CABINETS
Cabinets are the workhorse of your kitchen, so always push your budget as far as possible. Think practically as well as aesthetically when it comes to the finish (highly
polished dark colours show fingerprints easily, for example) and remember, neutrals stand the test of time more than bold colours which, incidentally, rarely work in small kitchens. You can always apply brighter colours to the walls or splash-backs (glass is effective). Don’t neglect handles – they can make or break a kitchen. Hettich and Hefale have a good selection with timeless clean lines and if you’re feeling flush, Valli & Valli have handles to die for. Small handles generally don’t work, but chrome is effective and never dates.
WORKTOPS
Avoid wood near sinks or you’ll become a slave to re-oiling, and be warned, glass worktops quickly look tired and scratched. Consider twin-edged worktops that look like glass, but are laminate. Corian is good for the seamless look. Designers say there’s nothing they can’t do with it – sinks of the same material, coved upstands and so on. Granite remains the top worktop choice. There are so many more materials at similar prices to the ubiquitous black. For sinks, stainless steel is best. For taps, the tri-flow system provides filtered water. For cheaper ways to get the wow factor, mix and match your worktops – for example, quartz and stainless steel – or vary the depth of work surfaces.
KITCHEN FLOORING
To put on a fantastic floor show, do your homework first. Start by looking at the construction of your existing floor and make sure it’s suitable for the type of flooring you’ve got in mind. Heavy materials such as stone or terracotta tiles need a solid concrete base. If you’re laying a floor over wood, go for lighter materials such as lino, vinyl or wooden floorboards.
Vinyl flooring
Comfortable and warm underfoot, vinyl is one of the most cost-effective flooring options and comes in a range of colours and patterns. For a durable surface that won’t fade, choose a vinyl with the colour running through - those with surface patterns tend to develop a patchy look over time. Your supplier can advise you on the correct grade for your kitchen and, if you have the budget, have it installed by a professional, as badly fitting vinyl will peel at the edges. To keep it looking pristine, sweep it regularly and clean with a non-abrasive cleaner.
Laminate is a great, cost-effective option that creates an authentic, real wood plank effect at a fraction of the cost of the real thing. Laminate
This is a great, cost-effective option that creates an authentic, real wood plank effect at a fraction of the cost of the real thing. These days, you’ll also find stone and ceramic tile effects too. Laminates are tough so they’re ideal for busy households with lots of traffic in the kitchen. To create the appearance of real wood floorboards, choose a laminate with bevelled edges that form a v shape between the planks when they’re butted up together. Even better, this flooring is designed to be clicked together so there’s no need for messy glue and you can even lay it yourself if you’re a competent DIYer.
Hardwood
A real hardwood floor is expensive, but will add value to your home. Treat it with a Polyurethane finish to make it easier to maintain and clean. Wipe spills up quickly though, as any water sitting for a length of time on the floor will result in warping. Unlike laminates, if your floor gets damaged, you don’t have to replace the boards – you can simply sand them down and treat them again.
Ceramic tiles
A popular choice for kitchens as they come in so many colours, textures and patterns allowing you to create your own unique look. You can even use a central colour and create a tiled border all around to frame the floor. Remember though, you need a solid concrete base for tiles as floorboards would shift underneath and cause cracks to form. Ceramic can be cold underfoot so consider installing underfloor heating. So you can create your own dream kitchen!
Stone or slate
Consult an expert if you’re thinking of using stone or slate on a kitchen floor as its porous nature means it can stain easily. It’s also one of the most expensive floors you can buy, but it will add value to your home. To reduce the risk of staining, go for the less porous slate rather than marble or limestone and make sure you have it professionally sealed. Look at travertine too – a natural stone made in Italy from calcium carbonate. It has a pitted appearance, comes in many colours and stands up to most cleaning products, making it the durable choice. If you have kids and pets running around, natural stone may not be the best option for you.

long-term kitchen investment, grey allows metals such as gold, steel and even the new trend for rose gold to truly stand out and is a great colour palette from which to accessorise with a variety of bolder colours and patterns. The cool grey tones look great with wood or stainless steel. Extra warmth can be added by combining hot colours such as electric blue or burnt orange.” So, which shade of grey is your favourite?

The priority is for a functional space, which is easy to work in and is visually appealing, and modern ranges can be hugely successful as a stunning, calm pared-back contrast, when the rest of the house is highly embellished with flourishes and detail.” A kitchen can make or break a property deal, and it’s estimated that it can add up to 7% to the value of a home. “Bear in mind that adventurous colour choices may look great in the showroom but can be hard to live with, and aren’t generally advisable if you’re considering selling a property,” Burgess-Allen points out. “If you feel colourstarved, play with colour in worktops and tiling. “Always consider the natural light available, and opt for light reflecting surfaces if it’s limited. ne of the first things you’ll need to consider when planning your new kitchen is the lighting, as electrics and fittings have to be installed at the start of the project, before plastering, decorating and the fitting. It’s an integral part of any scheme and this is your one chance to get it right. The key to a successful scheme lies in layering the effects, so you should try to zone the lighting according to its use - working (task), dining and mood (ambient) and creating the wow factor (feature). It’s important to

For the hob area, choose an extractor with four or more halogen lights and if the island is to be used for prep, highlight it with pendant lamps combined with recessed downlighters. These should always be controlled on a separate circuit, so make sure you talk to your electrician before any installation takes place. The latest trend is for easy-to-use sensor-operated products. Installing ceiling lighting can pose some difficulties, but it is possible to illuminate a kitchen without using any ceiling lights. There is a wide range of spotlights, downlighters, uplighters and strips that can be placed either under or on top of kitchen units. It also means you can be more creative, as it’s possible to conceal fixtures and fittings. Every kitchen, no matter how large or small, needs efficient task lighting. This is as much from a safety point of view as anything else. Drawer and cabinet lighting can also be operated on sensors, instantly coming on when the door is opened. Not only do they look great, the lights make it much easier to find that elusive corkscrew or pizza cutter. Open-plan kitchens with a dining area or those with a breakfast bar need a combination of adequate lighting for eating, with softer lighting for after-dinner conversation. Dining tables and island units will benefit from a series of overhead pendant lamps (rise-and-fall versions can be moved up or down when needed) while lamps and wall lights will create a warm glow that sets the mood.

Solid Roof Conservatories
If you don’t plan, plan to fail. 90 JUNE 2015
W
hen it comes to adding a conservatory or orangery to a dwelling or changing a glass roof for a solid one, many UK home owners have been badly advised by misinformed neighbours, double glazing suppliers and double glazing salesmen looking for a quick sale without advising you of the consequences. It may be helpful to first know what the “official” definition of a conservatory or glass extension is. Conservatories must be at ground level and have a floor area less than 30 square metres, they must be thermally separated from the dwelling by walls, windows or doors which meet the energy efficiency requirements, the dwelling’s heating system must not be extended into the conservatory, orangery or porch, and a significant amount of the walls and roof must be of a translucent material. Nowadays there are “Solid” roof products available that are thermally efficient enough to comply with the Building Regulations. These “warm roofs” offer excellent insulation as in effect make any structure a proper extension, which is why they require prior Buildings Regulation Approval. These systems tend to have thin steel tiles covered with acrylic for durability, with the option to have roof windows. Whilst double glazed conservatories and orangeries remain the most popular choice for UK homeowners glass extensions, given that in the vast majority of cases they can
a conservatory was built under planning permission “the roof finish will have been specified in the granting of planning permission and therefore a change from glass to another finish will require the change to be approved by the local planning authority.” It is wise therefore, before ordering a new solid roof for your existing conservatory or indeed buying a new conservatory with a solid roof, to first obtain all necessary planning and Building Regulatory Approvals in writing from your local authority. Also any existing foundations should have trial holes excavated to ensure they are adequate to support the new loading. In most cases a 150mm thick concrete strip foundation or reinforced concrete slab which bears onto original ground will be adequate. Foundations passing over drains, close to tree roots or on filled ground may require further consideration. It is even possible that a local Building Control Officer will insist that additional ventilation is retrospectively added to existing conservatory walls if a solid roof replaces a doubled glazed one, especially if the original roof had an opening roof vent or if the current double glazed windows and doors have inadequate ventilation for the size of living space. It is vital to think through and check out all the implications before ordering a replacement solid roof for an existing glass extension.
Any existing foundations should have trial holes excavated to ensure they are adequate to support the new loading. be designed and built so that Building Regulation Approval and Planning Permission is not required, this is not the case with solid roof conservatories. That is because solid roof conservatories in the eyes of Local Planning Officers and Building Control Officers are deemed to be an actual extension, rather than a glass roof conservatory or orangery that if designed correctly, can be exempt from needing planning approval and/or Building Regs. That said, solid roof conservatories do offer a more thermally efficient option, though obviously drastically reduce the amount of light in the room, compared to a true glass extension. There are several modern day solid roof systems with attractive, thin, hard wearing tiles and insulated ceilings with down lights that comply with the thermal requirements of the Building Regulations that offer homeowners a structure that is in effect an extension rather than a conservatory with a double glazed roof. Property owners with an existing conservatory need to be mindful of the fact that they cannot legally put a solid roof on their conservatory without first obtaining Building Regulation Approval and in many cases planning permission as well, due to it’s change of use, which permitted development may or may not cover. One of the conditions attached to Permitted Development under Clause A3 is that “the materials used in any exterior work (other than materials used in the construction of a conservatory) shall be of a similar appearance to those used in the construction of the exterior of the dwelling house”. For example the development permitted by Class A states that “a pitched roof on an extension should be clad in tiles that give a similar visual appearance to those used on the existing house roof.” According to the Glass and Glazing Federation, where
