Ignite your senses at Kew’s Tropical Extravaganza 2012. Saturday 4th February Sunday 4th March 2012. Princess of Wales Conservatory, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew
S
aturday 4th February 2012 marks the opening of the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew’s month long Tropical Extravaganza festival, where the Princess of Wales Conservatory is transformed into a sea of exotic orchids. It’s a celebration of all things bright, beautiful, and, tropical. The theme for this year is ‘Forces of Nature’ - visitors will be immersed in an environment where natural foliage and planting schemes will be interspersed with representational displays that dynamically explore and raise awareness of the four classical elements: air, fire, water and earth. Ornamental displays of tropical flowers will represent the elements by colour themes, such as hanging baskets of aquatic hues for water, and arches decorated with blazoned reds, yellows and oranges for fire. The wet tropical zone with its lush landscape will contrast with the colour-structured ‘forces of nature’ displays. Using the architecture of the building and a range of suspension, receptacle and planting devices, the zone will be transformed into a landscape

of sumptuous tropical plants. As well as the stunning floral displays, a number of sculptures will be in situ, including representations of wind-dispersed seeds, fungi, mangroves, cabanas, and wildlife. There will also be an atmospheric sound-scape that will covey the importance of air and wind to nature’s balance. Tropical Extravaganza will also highlight Kew’s global science and conservation programmes, illustrating how plants and fungi depend on and moderate the classical elements across our planet. G Live is lucky enough to have a multi-adaptable main hall that can handle any kind of music. It’s no surprise to see a world class orchestra one day only to be followed by a standing rock gig. March holds many surprises with visits from the European Union Chamber Orchestra featuring Julian Llyod Webber, The Osmonds and The Stranglers. Children aren’t forgotten at G Live this spring as there is plenty going on to grab their attention. Our Studio Season continues with the puppet based show Diving Belle in March and followed by the delightfully feathery The Ugly Duckling in April. In the same month G Live will be magically transformed as the Russian Ice Stars turn the main stage into an ice rink and perform everyone’s favourite fairy tale Cinderella on Ice. If you’re pondering how to get your son interested in the theatre then Science Museum Live! might be the ticket. Featuring dangerous demonstrations and extraordinary experiments this show is guaranteed to have jaws dropping on the floor and your kids thinking you are the coolest parent….ever! So why not impress your friends with your knowledge of the arts by visiting G Live for an evening’s entertainment? in time and re-live the style, glamour and romance of the original Swing era, with an uncompromising attention to detail and respect for those who have gone before and whose music and dance more and more people today are re-discovering, enjoying and celebrating. Having myself lost two family members to cancer this year, and Maxine having lost a close friend, we both saw the ball as a fantastic opportunity to support Macmillan’s excellent work.’ Macmillan’s SW London fund-raising manager Kate Macauley said: “This is set to be an amazing event. I’m really excited to be getting involved. Martin has done such an amazing job at organising this event in previous years that I have no doubt it will be a fantastic success. The fact that they have chosen to support Macmillan this year is great and we really appreciate it.’

op legend Sir Paul McCartney will headline a spectacular musical tribute to the Queen to mark her Diamond Jubilee. The former Beatle will be among a concert line-up that will feature artists from across the 60 years of the monarch’s reign playing in front of Buckingham Palace in June. Securing McCartney for the event’s bill is a major coup for singer Gary Barlow, who is helping to organise the event. Other performers will include Sir Elton John, Sir Tom Jones, Dame Shirley Bassey, Madness, Annie Lennox and Sir Cliff Richard, Jessie J, boy band JLS and singer songwriter Ed Sheeran. The Take That star said: “The Diamond Jubilee concert will celebrate the 60 years of the Queen’s reign with an amazing line-up of world class artists coming together to play at one of the biggest and most exciting live music shows in recent years. With Buckingham Palace as a backdrop, it’s going to be a fantastic event which transcends multiple

decades of music. It’ll be a great, unique, experience for the thousands attending, watching on TV and listening on Radio. I can’t wait.” The concert will take place in front of the palace, with the stage around the Victoria Monument and raised seating for up to 20,000 people - many of the rest from charities covering the flowerbeds around the roundabout. The organisers hope that up to another 500,000 people may throng St James’s and Green Parks and the Mall in the remote chance of catching a glimpse of the show or to watch on giant screens. Those who opt to stay at home can see it live on BBC1 or listen on Radio 2. Gary Barlow said the Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry had both requested artists to perform in front of an audience of more than 10,000 that will include the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and other members of the Royal Family.” Barlow would not confirm if he or Take That would play on the night but said almost two-thirds of the acts had been
confirmed and he hoped to go beyond Commonwealth artists and have American stars taking part. The musician said he wanted other forms of entertainment such as ballet or performances from the West End to be represented and highlighted how classical acts had already been booked - English tenor Alfie Boe and virtuoso Chinese pianist Lang Lang. A ballot is now open for British residents to apply for 10,000 free tickets for the show. Each successful applicant will be allowed to nominate a guest aged 13 or over, and the ballot is open until 2nd March. Ticket applicants can apply online at bbc.co.uk/ diamondjubilee or on a postcard to The Royal Diamond Jubilee Concert 2012, PO Box 798, Manchester, M60 1WU, between now and 2nd March. ust 60 bottles of a Diamond Jubilee scotch, made by Johnnie Walker distiller Diageo, have been produced for sale, and are being offered to known collectors of rare and expensive whiskies. Another single bottle will be given to the Queen herself. The whisky is a blend of grain and malt whiskies dating back from 1952, and finished in casks made of oak from the Queen’s Sandringham estate. If you don’t have £100,000 to spend and are wondering what it tastes like, the master blender for all Johnnie Walker whiskies, Jim Beveridge, said he is “surprised and delighted” by the way the Jubilee whisky has turned out. “With whisky as old as 60 years, sometimes it can be a bit crusty and the flavours can be a bit subdued. But this one is very vibrant,” he said. “It has a fresh fruity flavour, and a finish which is smoky and also has an exotic fruit taste.” He added that Diageo has whisky stocks dating back 50 years, but for anything older than that there are far fewer to choose from. “1952 was an interesting year for distillers, as the whisky industry started to get back on its feet after the Second World War “ said Mr Beveridge. The whisky was bottled on 7th February in Baccarat crystal decanters, at the Royal Lochnagar Distillery on the edges of the Queen’s Balmoral estate. David Gates, the head of Diageo’s whisky business, said the company originally planned to offer the Diamond Jubilee whisky to wealthy afficionados in Asia Pacific and Latin America, but has now had requests from the US and Europe as well. All profits from the sale of the bottles will go to the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST).

n 21st March 2012 Gaucho will host The Gaucho International Polo at London’s O2 arena, uniting high-octane polo interspersed with live world famous music to produce a unique event never seen before in Britain. Following the triumphant inaugural year in 2011, Gaucho International Polo has now evolved into the ultimate celebration of Argentina’s sporting and cultural heritage at the O2 arena. The 2012 event will consist of two international arena polo matches merged with exclusive performances from Grammy award winning band, Bajofondo. Bajofondo, who have put ‘electrotango’ firmly on the world music map will open and play throughout the tournament, creating a thrilling blend of polo and performances. The matches will see Scotland taking on Ireland and culminate in the titanic clash between IG Index’s England and Argentina, pitting Britain’s finest player, Jamie Morrison 3 4 F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 2
against the Royals’ favourite star, Nacho Figueras. The Gaucho International Polo will be a true Argentine festival, with tastings from some of the country’s finest wine producers, brought to the event by leading authority, Wines of Argentina. There will also be a fun and charitable twist to the event in the form of “The White Jeans Party’. What to wear to polo matches has often been hotly debated amongst the style conscious, but white jeans are winning in the fashion stakes with enthusiasts such as Prince Harry donning them at matches around the world. In keeping with this, every guest who arrives at the event wearing a pair, a pound will be donated to the BFF (British Forces Foundation). Arena polo is an emerging trend in the polo world and takes place on a smaller pitch with only three players per team rather than the usual four, creating a fast-paced and spectator friendly game. Set in the leafy suburbs of Guildford, Lanesborough Preparatory School prides itself on providing an academic, all-round education for boys aged 3 to 13. Whilst acknowledging that academic success is an important and continuing goal, Head of Lanesborough, Clare Turnbull, stresses the importance of inspiring the boys with a wide spectrum of interests. “My dream is that the boys leave Lanesborough academically strong but with well-rounded interests,” she says. “The scope for discovery and learning new skills is very strong here. We genuinely try to give the boys at least a flavour of a wide range of interests and if it sparks something within them, we are equipped to develop that interest further. I want them to go out into the world having had a taste of a full range of activities, whether that be in sport, music, art or any other opportunities.” Lanesborough’s recent ISI Inspection stated that: ‘The pupils’ personal development is outstandingly well developed and fostered by the school’s positive ethos. Their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is excellent, and relationships between pupils and teachers, and between themselves are excellent.’ The annual Activities Week at the end of the summer term is testimony to the school’s ethos. Favourite activities include Kip on a Ship, Bushcraft survival and a trip to a roman villa. With members of staff getting involved, this energetic week of fun and personal challenges is the grand finale at the end of a fulfilling year at Lanesborough. This ongoing encouragement of ‘exploration and discovery’ peaks now and then with other events fully endorsed by Clare. Her own zest for life and great humour shines through at events such as Book Week. This year the theme was Villains and she carried out her duties dressed as Shere Khan, much to the delight of the boys. Also entering into 4 6 F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 2
the spirit was Deputy Head, Dr Toby Griffiths, who dressed as a Captain Hook thus adding a touch of glamour to the smaller boys’ weekly story session. Lanesborough values its links with Guildford and a small, but important, percentage of its boys are choristers for Guildford Cathedral, strengthening links with the Cathedral and the town’s community and further illustrating the importance of music and the arts at the school.
INSPIRATION & ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AT LANESBOROUGH PREPARATORY SCHOOL words Tinx Newton
Clare admits that the sound of music within the school is a perk of her job: “Every morning the Cathedral Choristers practise in the room above my study - the delight of hearing the boys sing really puts a spring in my step and gears me up for the day ahead.” Academic achievement is also celebrated and apparent at Lanesborough. The ISI’s recent inspection of Lanesborough ( January 2011) declared, ‘Pupil achievement is outstanding’ Lanesborough boys regularly achieve top scholarships to esteemed senior schools. Most boys are successful in gaining places at the senior school of their choice, including the Royal Grammar School in Guildford, and in 2010, 15 boys gained scholarships to 9 schools. The strengths of an all-boys prep school are continually proven by Lanesborough and Clare Turnbull is steadfast in her reasons to keep the school single sex. She explains,
“In single sex schools boys can do everything. They make brilliant poets, musicians, artists, historians etc. Their demands are very different to girls and we can allow them the time and space to develop at their own pace within their own interests. At Lanesborough we feel that is an enviable and indeed, enjoyable position to be in.”

Choosing the right school for our children is paramount, if they are to realise their true potential as an individual and Bloo House, a co-educational school for 5 – 11 year olds offers the personal touch often lacking in other schools.
school for my son, making his transition very easy – he’s flourishing at his new school”. Children who have graduated from Bloo House have been offered places at some of the country’s top independent schools including, Eagle House, The Royal Grammar School, Hampton Boys, Sir William Perkins, and Surbiton High.
A new generation of school for the modern child, Bloo House pupils undergo a very different experience compared to most other schools - an experience driven by academic excellence, well-being, and happiness. On first entering the school, visitors are greeted by an entrance and décor that almost makes them feel at home. A painting of Gustav Klimt’s “Mother and Child” hangs above the fireplace and together with canvas works located around the school of other inspiring and famous individuals, this makes one realise that this is a very special place. The school is known for offering unrivalled education, with high levels of individual attention being central to the school’s aims of nurturing intuitive and enquiring minds. Their holistic approach enables children to develop emotionally, academically, physically, and spiritually.
“Children who have graduated from Bloo House have been offered places at some of the country’s top independent schools.” The transition process from Bloo House to secondary school is seamless, with the school preparing pupils up to 18 months beforehand and an emphasis on choosing a school that recognises each pupil’s potential as well as one that suits the child’s personality. Margaret Brown, a mother who had both of her children at the school, with one recently graduating and moving into secondary school commented, “Bloo House were absolutely superb in the process of choosing the right
Children who have graduated from Bloo House have been offered places at some of the country’s top independent schools...
One of the first independent primary schools in Britain to adopt such an original approach, the Bloo House ethos of developing the whole child extends throughout their curriculum from the teaching of core subjects with the aid of Apple iPads to more nontraditional subjects such as psychology and philosophy. In addition, the curriculum also includes Spanish, French, and Latin in the weekly timetable. Their sports programme, centred on exercising the inner and outer body is particularly inventive, offering children professional fitness coaching, golf, martial arts and yoga. So, it would appear that Bloo House is paving the way in primary education. As well as heads of academic institutions, the school has also caught the attention of the national media, which has described the school as “groundbreaking” and one that offers a truly refreshing approach to education. And the fact that they have a 100% success rate in pupils being offered places and scholarships at a number of the UK’s top secondary schools is an obvious testament to their unique approach.

The first year of Fairtrade and Fairmined Gold Valentine’s Day 2012 marked the first anniversary of the launch of Fairtrade and Fairmined gold. To celebrate, Jon Dibben, one of the first jewellery designers involved in the initiative, will be unveiling striking new designs in this most precious metal during this year’s Fairtrade fortnight27th February to 11th March. Pieces include a follow-up to his iconic ‘Meadow’ ring, with a tawny-coloured tourmaline and diamonds set in ecological white gold, and all emphasise the company’s philosophy of integrity in design, workmanship and materials, which has led them so far along the path of ethical sourcing. His Fairtrade and Fairmined designs can be 5 4 F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 2

High quality MRI scans at new affordable prices*
When it comes to your health, you need certainty. When health and wellbeing are a concern, problems that are skin deep can be seen and easily understood. Deeper problems cannot. In these cases it is not always immediately obvious what is going on inside your body. Not even to a doctor or specialist. High quality diagnostic imaging can play a part in clearer diagnosis and therefore more immediate remedial action or treatment. Or it can even just provide relief and peace of mind. It is non-invasive and can help diagnose or discount many internal health conditions. Often those that can be the most worrying.

ondon Fashion Week (LFW) is one of the highest profile fashion events in the world and one of the ‘big four’ international catwalk influencers. The event is organised by the British Fashion Council and funded by a number of sponsors (including principal sponsor Vodafone). It is a world of celebrities and famous people, beautiful and expensive clothes and general fashion glitz. London Fashion Week puts London and British fashion firmly on the global stage; it is estimated that orders of over £100m are placed during LFW each season. Over 5,000 visitors attend: buyers, TV & radio crews, journalists and photographers. There are 60 catwalk shows on the official schedule as well as a further 45 shows off-schedule. There are also more than 30 on-schedule presentations and salon shows. LFW visitors have access to many more designers through presentations, multi-brand and individual showrooms . In February 2010 the British Fashion Council launched the digital schedule as a part of London Fashion Week. The digital schedule is the first official Fashion Week schedule of its kind, bringing together live streamed shows and a selection of fashion films. The vibrant and internationally renowned London Fashion Week is always exciting and inspirational, and this month’s event will in no doubt prove to be just that once again, all housed under one roof in the neoclassical surrounds of Somerset House. The BFC co-ordinate an events schedule to help visitors experience London ªthe cityª as well as the showcase of British fashion design talents at LFW, presenting another unrivalled opportunity for both established designers and newcomers to present their Autumn/Winter 2012 collections. The fast track way to looking 10 years younger No longer is that age-defying smile and wrinkle-free complexion a mean feat to achieve. Thanks to ABC Dental, cosmetic dentistry and enhancements are more readily available than ever, and to anyone who requests it. So turning back the clock to look 10 years younger can be achieved in a speedy time with the least invasive procedures as possible. Whilst many focus on complexions, it’s important, if not more so, to understand other aspects that can give your actual age away... teeth! Sparkling white teeth not only look fresh and smart but fills you with confidence... no longer having to hide an unkempt and yellow stained mouth when talking and smiling. Over the years the onset of teeth staining thanks to too much coffee, smoking, diet and age, all can be removed with ABC Dental’s one and a half hour ZOOM process; a teeth whitening procedure which turns back the clock in an instant. You can get a take home bleaching kit with custom fit trays, which you wear for a period of 7-14 nights to achieve your desired result too. What’s most important to remember is it’s never too late to create and perfect your teeth, which is a huge step in turning back the clock. Dental implants bring back the smile to people who have lost teeth through decay, accidents, gum disease or excessive wear and tear. Through the loss of teeth structure, the lip support also depletes which can cause a sunken smile. All of which makes the face seem older. Along with dental implants, ABC Dental offer veneers which are a great conservative option that can change the shape 6 6 F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 2

and colour of teeth. Ultimately through adding veneers and implants, you can have the same
results as a surgical facelift but without the invasive procedure! As you age, eyebrows gradually lose their arch and appear dull. But whether it’s dull brows, frown lines below and above the brows, deep sagging of
skin below the brows or permanent wrinkles around the brows due to expressions – you name it, ABC Dental has something to treat it. Softening wrinkles, or smoothing them out completely, is a nononsense procedure at ABC Dental, thanks to their Facial Rejuvenation formula. Even crows feet and laughter lines can be filled and smoothed. The use of derma-fillers to seal deep wrinkles, plump up the skin or to get fuller lips, is a sure fire way to give that youthful appearance we all so long for. Ultimately, ABC Dental is a one-stop shop if you want to make yourself look ten years younger. No matter what age you are, or what condition your problem areas are in, it’s easy to find a solution when consulting with this dentistry.

Kate’s flagship camp at Reeds Rugby Club in Whiteley Village, Cobham that she teaches with Olympian Nick Buckfield has an avid following. ‘I’ve taught this camp with Nick for years, and can truly say I have enjoyed every day. BOOST YOUR SKINCARE REGIME WITH BEAUTY'S REJUVENATING WONDER PRODUCT. LISA HAYNES UNVEILS THE SECRET OF SERUM.
V
ictoria Beckham and Rihanna were rumoured to have been sent advance supplies and eager skincare enthusiasts stripped the shelves bare on its first day of sale. Ladies, please welcome YSL's new Forever Youth Liberator serum, hailed as the 'holy grail' of anti-ageing. As previous stampedes for Aldi's Lacura Multi-Intensive Serum and Boots' No7 Protect & Perfect (albeit with lower price tags) prove, serums are hot property. is unassuming product may take pride of place on every beauty editor's shelf but many women are yet to sign up to the serum club. "A lot of women wrongly assume that oil creates more oil," says Chey Birch, aromatherapist and founder of beauty brand Black Chicken Remedies. "But not all oils are equal - many have therapeutic properties for your face that contain high concentrations of nutrients and can enter deep into the skin." Moisturisers, beware. Serums are fast becoming the skincare must-have. SERUM NOVICE Once you've stumbled upon a super serum, there's no going back. 7 0 F E B R U A RY 2 0 1 2
But unless you're already an aficionado, there's confusion about what these hallowed bottles do and how to use them. While creams only affect the top layer of skin, serums are packed with active ingredients that can be rapidly absorbed through the skin's layers. As well as brightening tired, dull complexions, serums are "high in concentrated ingredients to treat skin problems such as redness, wrinkles, discoloration, dehydration, sagging skin and acne", Birch explains. And there are no hard and fast rules on routine - they can be used morning and night after cleansing and toning, and before a moisturiser - or on their own. "Apply a few drops of serum and use mild upward and outward strokes to blend the serum into your face," suggests Birch. "Wait for five minutes to allow full absorption. After that, if required, apply a moisturiser over the serum. Don't forget the neck area too." A good skincare routine might feel like a daily chore but adding that extra serum stage can make all the difference for glowing skin. redness, while others tackle fine lines and wrinkles. "As the skin ages, we all notice slackening and sagging, with deeper lines becoming more visible," says Sarah Chapman, facialist and skincare expert. "Once you start noticing these signs, look for peptide-loaded serums, which also contain antioxidants such as vitamins A, C and E, coenzyme Q10 and targeted ingredients such as renovage that work on the cells' DNA to help defend and repair." Chapman recommends thinking of serum as your skincare underwear, which restructures and contours the skin. If the winter overdose of central heating has dried out your skin, look for a serum based on hyaluronic acid (HA). "Slot this option into your routine if your skin looks dull and always feels tight, to lock in moisture and get your skin glowing and dewy again," says Chapman. THE SERUM TAKEOVER Widely hailed as the hero of skincare for complexions, it's little wonder that the beauty world has utilised the wonders of serum in other products.

Max Factor make-up artist Caroline Barnes says: "January days tend to take the glow out of your skin. Unruly locks? Seek out a hair serum as an effective quick fix for bad hair days. Mark Woolley, creative director of Electric Hairdressing, says: "Serums usually contain a high concentration of potent ingredients, meaning you only need to use a small amount. ey instantly smooth down any stray hairs while adding a beautiful, natural shine."
TRIED & TESTED Lisa Haynes tries out the all-new 'rasul mud treatment'. While I gave up on most of my detox resolutions at approximately 10pm on January 1, there was one ritual I left on my list. at was to have a 'rasul' - a traditional Arabian cleansing ritual. Dubbed the ultimate luxurious detoxification experience (no dieting required), these have taken off across the country in past months. Wearing bikinis, my friend and I entered a glistening tiled room and unrobed to slather ourselves from top to toe in Moroccan clay mud. Said to be 100% natural, the solution resembled melted milk chocolate but felt lovely on the skin and the application process was a real giggle. We were also given a runny, gooey honey, rose and ginger oil mask to apply to our faces. Covered in mud, we sat in the steam room and waited for the rose essential oil--infused steam to fill the space. At first it was relaxing but as the heat intensified, we really started to sweat, allowing the mud and steam to combine and remove impurities. We were thankful when a refreshing tropical rain shower completed the treatment, dousing us with cooling water. While a friendly therapist is on hand to supervise the treatment, you do have to get stuck in, so it's a great treatment to carry out with friends. e Sanctuary's sparkling crystallised steam room accommodates four, but spas nationwide cater for varying numbers. As the mud-focused treatment draws toxins from deep within the skin, it can leave you feeling fairly zonked afterwards, so it's important to re-hydrate. Overall, the rasul experience is a good mix of mud slinging, unwinding and sweating out your sins. THAT'S MY KIND OF DETOX! I
have often said that we should emulate the prudent wealthy people of Tudor times who invested their money in tangible things like land, property, decorative arts and items of intrinsic value such as gold and silver. e production of artefacts made of the latter was, by the middle of the 16th century, strictly controlled and as proof of this the Goldsmiths’ Company had instituted a system of marking all items so made which revealed with individual stamps on the surface the quality of the material, the identity of the maker, the place where it was tested and the officer in charge of the testing. As it was an annual office this mark changed each year and, taking its form as a letter of the alphabet, became known as the Letter of the Year Mark or more recently simply the ‘Date Letter’. Originally it was called the Assay Mark - from the French word assai meaning examination - introduced under a statute of 1478 wherein the Goldsmiths’ Company was made liable to a fine if it marked any substandard silver. (A point here is that in this context the term goldsmith applies to silversmiths as well.) In 1545 the fourth mark was added, depicting a lion walking to the left with its right paw raised and known as the Lion Passant. It became known as the Sterling Mark as it took the place of the earlier King’s Mark to denote quality while the latter became recognised as the mark of the London Goldsmiths’ Company and Assay Office. e reason for the change was two-fold. Firstly by the mid 1500’s the coinage had become debased by approximately 50% which meant that a silver crown (5 shillings) had only half a crown’s worth of silver content. To prove the maintained sterling value and quality of wrought plate, that is items made of silver, the Lion Passant mark was introduced. Secondly, by this time and starting as early as 1378, Assay Offices had been established in various parts of the country, particularly at York, Newcastle, Lincoln, Norwich, Bristol, Salisbury and Coventry. While it was imperative that all

silver should be guaranteed to be of the sterling standard and marked as such it was impractical to expect silversmiths from these disparate places to travel to London to have their wares marked and so each adopted a different emblem to equate with the Leopard’s Head of London. All these towns and cities used a letter of the alphabet to identify the Assay Master but they did not all use the same sequence of letters. London used the first twenty letters in the alphabet excluding ‘J’ and when the run was exhausted the typeface or the shape of the background ‘shield’ was changed. In 1560 Queen Elizabeth I restored the value of the coin, a move which set Britain on a steady course to recovery for the best part of 100 years only to be decimated by our civil war (1642 – 1649.) Among the results of this were vast amounts of earlier wrought plate being melted down to pay for it, which in turn caused a shortage of silver for manufacture. Over time this affected the monetary supply to such an extent that by the 1690’s further legislation was necessary. Until the reign of Charles II all our coinage was made by hand, stamped by hammer and die and the edges trimmed with shears. Although trade was often conducted through barter or credit, cash transactions were
common enough and so, before parting with your coins it was only human nature to snip a little bit of the edge of each one. ese little snippets all mounted up - the original ‘every little counts’ – but it had already become a capital offence to clip coins and, with a fake die, forge your own money. However with an increased demand from working silversmiths these scraps could command as high a price as the coins they had been cut from, and with less risk of detection of the crime. So a new type of coinage was called for and a mill was set up in the Tower of London and powered by horses to produce perfectly circular coins. As a belt -and-braces measure an inscription or legend was engraved around the outer edge thereby making illegal clipping virtually impossible. But the authorities failed to see the problem with having both old and new currency in circulation at the same time. Obviously people hung on to the new with its full face value money’s worth, while spending and clipping - the old. Clearly the old coinage had to be withdrawn and the 2nd, 3rd and 4th of May 1697 were the final days for collection at the ten furnaces specially built behind the Treasury, which was then at Whitehall between the Banqueting House and the river. For weeks great piles of coins, mostly half face value and barely recognisable had been collected, melted down and cast into ingots. In one instance some £52,000 of face value coins were melted to produce just over half that amount of silver worth. But distribution of the new coins was slow and while all this was going on another factor became evident; the value of coin clippings to silversmiths had to betaken out of the equation. is was done by raising the silver content of wrought plate to a level above that of coin. Not by so much as to make the material too soft for use and durability but sufficient to be detected by the assay. e figures were a raise from 92.5% pure to 95.84% pure. It was known at first as the New Sterling Standard but – as it
was denoted by a stamp showing the figure of Britannia – it soon became known as the Britannia Standard. is mark replaced the Lion Passant mark and in London the Leopard’s Head was replaced by a mark showing a Lion’s Head in profile, facing to the left with a jagged neckline as if torn from its body. Heraldically this is called ‘erased’ and so the Britannia Standard in London is denoted by the Britannia mark and the Lion’s Head Erased. In all other towns and cities the Lion’s Head Erased is used in addition to their town mark. From 1697 until 1720 the Britannia Standard was obligatory but in the latter year the economy in England had recovered sufficiently for the government to restore the old Sterling Standard while retaining the Britannia Standard as an option which it remains to the present day. In the early days of the maker’s mark, people were less literate and initials meant little or nothing to most, so symbols were commonly used. ese might be a miniature image of the shop or tavern sign where the silversmith had his workshop, such as leathern bottle or a swan, a star or crescent moon. By the 17th century we see the first two letters of the surname being used and by the beginning of the 18th century the silversmith’s initials gradually became the norm. From the 1720’s it can be said without question that the manufacture and sale of English silver was the most proficiently run and tightly controlled of all industries, with the welfare and benefit of manufacturer, supplier and purchaser held in equal esteem. e four marks as described filled every requirement and would surely have survived unaided save for a change in taxation in the 1780’s and the Convention Hallmarks introduced in the 1970’s, nearly two hundred years later. When we’ve dealt with them we really will get onto the silver from the Channel Isles, Scotland, Ireland and other desirable categories where the present day equivalent of the prudent Tudor person should still be putting their money ■

Prunus Mume Benishidare
The Japanese decorative apricot, Prunus mume benishidare adds a touch of the orient. A small deciduous tree, ideal for the small garden flowers in early spring. Small but perfectly formed rich pink single flowers are delicate in appearance, but resistant to frost. They are strongly almond scented an added bonus potentially dull early spring days. The Persian Ironwood, or Parrotia persica, a member of the Hamamelis family, has an unusual but intriguing flower, a tree also renowned for its autumn leaf colour. The flowers are possible to miss at a quick glance, but a closer look will show a welcome sign of the spring to come. The flowers consist of clusters of crimson stamens like tiny paintbrushes. At this time of year the contorted hazel provides a different form of beauty. The contorted stems and dangling catkin shaped flowers provide structure in the winter garden. It like its relatives, the fruiting hazels that produce the hazelnuts, cobnuts and filberts, herald spring with catkins, although do not produce the nuts. of colour and scent were developed to shed pollen in the winds. Salix caprea pendula, or Kilmarnock willow is another tree that bears bold male catkins in the spring to produce pollen to be distributed by the wind. This top grafted weeping deciduous tree provides an additional seasonal highlight for the small garden. I’ve left the best to last! I have cheated with this choice as this one is neither deciduous nor native and as a result has not developed in response to our weather. When we look at our gardens we do have to bear in mind that a small percentage of what we see are actually native. My favourite for the spring is the mimosa, or acacia dealbata. Against the backdrop of the bare branches of our native deciduous trees, the acacias lemon yellow flowers scented with a hint of violets provide a pleasant surprise. A spell of mild weather and the acacias small flowers transform the evergreen crown of leaf into a feathery cloud. The acacia is ideal for planting in the sheltered garden.
