THE THREE HORSESHOES AT THURSLEY
WINS SURREY DINING PUB OF THE YEAR The Good Pub Guide has singled out the Three Horseshoes at Thursley as the best pub in Surrey for a good meal out. The historic country pub on the edge of Thursley Common, run by Savoy trained chef David Alders and Sandra Proni, is unusual in that it is owned by the village community. Around 20 local people got together to buy the pub in 2004 after it had been closed for several years while the owner attempted to get permission for conversion to a residential dwelling. He was foiled by the efforts

Here he talks about how his passion for all things water has extended to owning and running a unique and new events space; Ravens Ait Island on the River Thames at Kingston upon Thames in Surrey. “You can’t even imagine the work that goes into participating in at the Olympics but it is all so enjoyable and unique. Everything about taking part in the Olympics in unique from the experience to the Olympic Village which has to cater for thousands of athletes all demanding hundreds of varieties of cuisine- this is just one element that forms part of what I have been involved in for years.” Ossie is a charismatic man who this year unveiled Ravens Ait Island located on the River

Thames as a unique event space that can cater for 500 guests. The island is magical and has several areas ideal for both indoor and outdoor events. Ossie is never too far from the water or his passion- sailing. Only last month he organised a Regatta on Ravens Ait Island featuring fellow Olympic champions. “I hosted a Regatta event on Ravens Ait Island recently where fellow Olympic medallists participated including Ben Ainslie and Michael McIntre. Getting together with fellow Sailors is always fun. The event was won by Nathan Wilmot a member of the Australian sailing team. Locals and sailing fans attended and we tied it in with a Caribbean theme as it was around Carnival weekend- that’s the nice thing about Ravens Ait Island, you can pretty much create
whatever event you want.” Ravens Ait Island features landscaped lawns, a marquee, a ballroom and a suite dedicated to all manner of events. Because of the indoor & outdoor available space all types of events can be organised including Weddings & Civil Ceremonies (fully licenced). Ossie recently organised the island’s first wedding which guests described as “magical”. Ossie has spent over a year refurbishing and re-establishing Ravens Ait Island as a beautiful location with features including a huge willow tree looking healthy over a clean, crisp and elegant large lawn area. Inside design elements feature excellent lighting options, modern furniture with a classic twist. The entire look and feel of Ravens Ait Island make you want to stay on for much
longer. There are future plans to add bedrooms which will no doubt make Ravens Ait Island even more magical. Ossie is passionate about the forthcoming games and will be organising Olympic themed events on Ravens Ait Island whilst himself participating at next year’s games as a chief marshal for the sailing. The island can be hired exclusively or parts of it can be hired. To further add to the already wow factors, Ravens Ait Island also offer cruises on a beautiful Edwardian launch boat which meets guests and ferries them on a journey of discovery along the vast River Thames before disembarking into the magic that island life offers. Ossie Stewart often speaks at events as a guest speaker, at the moment all the talking is about his latest venture – Ravens Ait Island. www.ravensait.co.uk Ravens Ait Island, Portsmouth Road, Kingston upon Thames, Surrey 020 8339 6960

The autumn exhibition, starting on 15th October, will include work from local artist Carol Gillan, who specialises in dramatic and humorous animal portraits, established artist Nicola Evans, whose work uses movement and colour to create abstract, atmospheric pieces that convey the mood of the moment and new works from celebrated landscape painter Chris Rigby. After painting the rugged moors and mountains of north England and Scotland, Chris has turned his attention to the Surrey Hills. A selection of his new work will be displayed exclusively at the gallery autumn’s exhibition and should prove very popular with Surrey residents.

At this time of year, flowers still bloom in profusion. The latesummer borders are filled with colour from asters, Japanese anemones, schizostylis and Verbena bonariensis, and the new season brings the jewel-like colours of the autumn-flowering bulbs. The Alpine Meadow becomes a carpet of lavender-blue as the autumn-flowering crocus make themselves known, whilst Cyclamen hederifolium brightens up the woodland floor of the spectacular Battleston Hill and the Pinetum. But it’s the trees that create the true spectacle at this time of year. Into late autumn, the rich, russet-red foliage of the magnificent sweet gum, Liquidambar styraciflua brightens up the Jubilee Arboretum and, with the buttery hues of the Tilia and spectacular colours of the Acers and Japanese maples, a magnificent display is created. The mature hornbeam trees turn a warm, golden yellow before their leaves fall, and for a few days in October, Nyssa sylvatica ‘Wisley Bonfire’ produces the most vibrant, fiery display of leaves. Whilst, not to be outdone, the ornamental crab apples have jewel-like fruits of yellow, orange and red and the leaves of the witch hazels gradually change colour from the outside until they turn buttery-yellow, orange or bright red. 2 8 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 1

he Wey Navigation runs for twenty miles from Weybridge to Godalming through some of Surrey’s most beautiful countryside. With eight pubs along the route and numerous points of historical interest, the Navigation is one of Surrey’s most rewarding leisure resources.
making it something of a landmark and rather romantic looking, especially when there is a morning mist on the meadows. The church was recorded in the Domesday book (1086) although there were extensive renovations to it in 1200 and the tower was raised in the eighteenth century (www.weyriver. co.uk/theriver). Walter Grove, master carpenter on the Navigation This month’s stroll upstream along during Victorian times, and father of the Navigation towpath links Triggs and Stoke Locks. From Triggs Lock thirteen, who featured in the previous article, is buried in the churchyard. (described in the previous article in the series) the towpath heads A second bridge, confusingly named southeast, first under the shade of Send Church Bridge as the path trees and then beside open water leading south from it does not in meadows. The Navigation here is fact lead to the church and is private, artificial channel but it follows fairly close to the natural river. A footpath takes the towpath to the other side of the channel. In summer, only the crosses the towpath at Wareham straightness of the channel in this Bridge; it leads westwards to peaceful stretch indicates that is an Wareham’s Farm and Sutton Green artificial cut as the grass spills freely and eastwards across the meadows into the water, hiding the bank edges to St.Mary’s Church, Send. This path can be very soggy indeed and is completely. It is well worth pausing on the bridge to drink in the view. best only attempted in wellingtons Soon the towpath reaches a tight except in very dry periods. West. Sutton Place shares a long history with the Navigation as it was the home of its builder, Sir Richard Weston. Sir Richard’s great great grandfather, also a Sir Richard, was granted the manor of Sutton in 1521 as a reward for helping Henry VIII in his negotiations with the French at the Field of the Cloth of Gold, or to thank him for condemning Lord Buckingham to death, depending on which version of the story you hear. The current house was built in the 1520s and, according to www.weyriver.co.uk/theriver, was the first great house in England without defensive fortifications. The house has had an interesting history. According to some accounts, Henry VIII met Anne Boleyn there. Whether this is true or not, Sir Richard’s son, Sir Francis, a Gentleman of the Privy Chamber, became friends with the young queen at court. Henry accused Anne of adultery and Sir Francis was beheaded, with Anne following the same fate two days later. Needless to say, their ghosts are rumoured to haunt Sutton Place. Subsequent Westons had more
L O C A L WA L K S illustrious careers but it was the third Sir Richard Weston, knighted by James 1 in Guildford in 1622, who built the Navigation. Wishing to grow better crops on his land, Sir Richard dug channels to harness the Wey’s water so that he could flood his meadows in winter. As a result, the soil temperature stayed higher and the growing season could begin earlier. This gave him the idea to build more channels and, eventually, the Wey Navigation was begun. The first ten miles of the Navigation were completed in 1658, one year after Sir Richard’s death. The works left his heir, George, so heavily in debt that he spent time in a debtors’ prison (www.weyriver.co.uk/theriver).
HOVERFLY BY THE WEY
In more recent times, Sutton Place has been home to film magnates and oil barons, most famously Paul Getty. In the grounds he kept two lions who moved to Longleat after his death, at the house, in 1976. At the time of writing, it is owned by a Russian businessman. The house is not visible from the towpath, just its elegant tree-lined carriage drive that runs parallel to the towpath for a short distance before Broad Oak Bridge. As you continue along the towpath towards Bowers Lock, the land on the right is called Coopers Meadow. It was here that Sir Richard built the first of his artificial channels. There is a good chance of spotting deer grazing here. At Bowers Lock, the Navigation makes a right hand turn to the South while the river flows around a wide meander. The short stretch of ‘cut’ here, just 600 yards, saves a much longer journey by river. A steel bridge crosses the channel to reach the lock. That it post-dates the working life of the Navigation was proved in 1989, when the National Trust celebrated the 25th anniversary of its ownership of the Navigation; the horse-drawn barge Iona was towed from Godalming to the Thames and the barge horse, an amenable animal for the rest of the 15 mile journey, dug its heels in when asked to cross the springy bridge at Bowers. With its grass lawns and mature trees, Bowers Lock is a lovely spot, cool even on a hot summer day. There used to be a mill here that made paper, flour and linseed. The pretty white house is thought to be where the miller lived.
Above the Lock, the Navigation passes under two bridges, the modern Clay Lane Bridge that carries the road from the A3 to Jacob’s Well and its predecessor, Bowers Bridge. If you walk under the first bridge and at the second take the path up to the road you will come to Bowers Lane, at the end of which there is a small public car park and the entrance to the Riverside Park Nature Reserve. This public reserve occupies the land between the Navigation and the A3 from here to Stoke Lock and it can also be reached from footpaths and boardwalks leading off the towpath. The 80 hectares of woodland, meadowland and a large lake are home to many species of bird; interpretative boards help with identification. Stoke Lock was the first lock to be built on the Navigation (1618), although perhaps not in its current form. The present cottage dates from 1882. Often moored here is Swingbridge 2, a distinctive green and yellow boat owned by local charity, the Surrey Care Trust. One of its uses is for training in environmental work and boat handling skills for young people who find it difficult to fit into mainstream school. (For more information about the Surrey Care Trust, visit www.surreycaretrust.co.uk.)

From Stoke Lock, Guildford is just a short walk away. The next article will deal with the Navigation as it flows through this historic county town. The author is indebted to Wardle, A.R. uddleduck Nannies is a thorough unique childcare consultancy offering a thorough, discreet and above all professional service to families and organisations throughout Surrey and the UK. Founders Amanda and Alison started the agency when they realized it was impossible for them to meet the demands of their former careers when continually faced with the all-toofamiliar shortcomings of third party recommended nannies. Having formed the business as a result of these experiences, they have committed themselves to a strict manifesto ensuring that the working practices of the company meet the prior demands of a working parent. One of the questions we asked ourselves when starting Puddleduck was how can we match families with the perfect nanny quickly and efficiently? Here at Puddleduck Nannies we make the parent/nanny partnership less of a nerveracking experience because we recognize quickly the requirements of both parties. We achieve this by visiting the family in their home environment so we are able get a feel of the families needs, also enabling us to build a relationship with the family that continues once the nanny has been

Additionally, a nanny will provide your children with more personal care and attention than they would receive in an out-ofhome child care environment. eli Air, with its bases at Wellesbourne Aerodrome, Warwickshire, Wycombe Air Park and Denham Aerodrome, Buckinghamshire and within the Silverstone Race Circuit, Northamptonshire is a highly experienced helicopter flying training organisation offering training courses to suit individuals from all varieties of backgrounds. For any prospective pilot, a trial lesson followed by an introductory day spent flying the Robinson R22 or R44 is the most cost effective way to determine whether flying is something they wish to pursue, and for those who decide to take on the challenge of completing their Private Pilot Licence (PPL), any hours incurred during this initial period will automatically count towards the minimum requirement for their licence. Once qualified, the Private Pilot Licence allows individuals to fly their friends and family almost anywhere in the UK and across Europe. The PPL training course consists of a minimum of 45 hours flying time and the R22 helicopter is normally employed 3 6 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 1

heli Air for this purpose. The training will initially familiarise the student with the basics of flying, including flying straight and level, climbing and descending, turns, and the art of hovering. Further exercises dealing with potential emergencies prepare the student for his or her first solo flight where he or she will take off from the aerodrome, complete one circuit before landing safely and hover taxiing back to the instructor. The course culminates in a test whereby the student demonstrates his or her skills to an examiner and thereafter the pilot may self-fly hire helicopters
of the same type and share the experience with their family and friends. Having qualified as a Private Pilot, many individuals wish to upgrade their skills by learning to fly other helicopters. The obvious choice for most is to learn to fly the R44 which is a 4 seater version of the R22. With controls virtually identical to the R22, this can be achieved in as little as 5 hours and a test. Heli Air has expanded its training division by offering an advanced flying course to students who have their licence, yet wish to improve their flying and navigation skills. Flying
through controlled airspace, Military Air Traffic Zones, confined areas and advanced auto rotations all feature heavily during this modular course designed to turn the PPL novice into a more rounded and professional pilot. In addition, Heli Air also trains for night flying, instrument awareness and mountain flying, all designed to make the individual a better pilot. For those who decide to make a career of helicopter flying, Heli Air provides the right environment to achieve this goal, the Commercial Pilot Licence. Heli Air offers some outstanding packages for individuals to accumulate their flying hours for the CPL course at competitive rates. The Commercial course as its name implies is to turn the individual into a pilot capable of flying and navigating accurately, improving the efficiency of the

The tennis metaphors have come thick and fast, the latest with BBC Music Magazine declaring this years musical offering : “Wimbledon’s serve is perfect pitch’’, whilst other headlines have put the Festival on the international map. Gramophone has the festival among ‘The Best Events Worldwide’ and German Tokafi headlined: ‘Wimbledon Music Festival: Re-defining the Best’. So what is the ‘best’ at Wimbledon this year? Well you can’t do much better than this quartet of soloists – Nancy Argenta, Michael Chance, Allan Clayton and Roderick Williams – in Bach’s B minor Mass which opens the Festival on 12th November. Whilst closing the Festival on 27th November are the dazzling London Winds, one of the world’s most prominent chamber ensembles. Perhaps the scoop of the year comes with the UK premiere of a stunning, visual realization of Mussorgsky’s ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’ at the hands of Russian pianist Mikhail Rudy and the great Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky, who was inspired by the music to stage a work for ‘total theatre’ while he was at the Bauhaus in the late 1920s. While we are all thinking about our autumn wardrobes and digging out our winter jumpers in an attempt to stay warm, designers were showcasing next year’s spring/summer collections during this month’s London Fashion Week. So what we will be wearing next Spring & Summer? Here are just a selection of those names that hit the catwalk! Over 1500 guests attended the Burberry Prorsum Spring Summer 2012 Womenswear show in London’s Hyde Park. Pippa Middleton, Kanye West, Samantha Cameron, Sienna Miller, Paul Weller were among the wellgroomed crowd of celebrities packing London Fashion Week’s glossiest event to catch a glimpse of Burberry’s spring/summer 2012 collection. Burberry Prorsum’s design chief Christopher Bailey wowed the starstudded crowd with dozens of variations on the luxury brand’s signature trench coat.Bailey, who has been at the helm of the historic British brand’s designs for a decade, has been credited with revitalising it and lifting its revenues. For the spring and summer 2012 season, he showed off a commercially-savvy collection that ensured the clothes suited all tastes. Neutrals were ditched for rich autumnal hues which dominated alongside colourful abstract prints and raffia was prominently used on tops, coats, belts and bags.Bailey said he wanted to celebrate traditional craftsmanship that is being forgotten and to juxtapose that with the digital technology that the brand is embracing. As for its digital innovations, the fashion house showed its Twitter fans each model’s look before they hit the catwalk. It also opted to stream the event in HD from both its own website and Facebook page. Clarity and optimism radiate from the SS12 Aquascutum collection, exploring the contrasting forms created by structure and drape, bringing a fresh sense of femininity and a glamorous sensuality to Aquascutum’s signature outer wear and tailoring. Aquascutum’s rich British heritage continues through the use of innovative technical fabrics, featuring an exclusively commissioned, laminated,British tweed and a playful exploration of coating silk georgette with a waterproof gloss finish. Outerwear is made graphic with strips of bonded canvas and plastic trim. Luxurious and wearable accessories echo the palette and texture of the collection. Aquascutum was founded in 1851 by high quality tailor John Emary with the mission to provide stylish protection from the unpredictable British weather. The name Aquascutum originates from the two Latin words ‘aqua’ (water) and ‘scutum’ (shield). Aquascutum has been part of London city life for nearly 160 years. As always the front row of Jasper’s catwalk show was packed with members of the fashion press and his family and friends who turned out in force for a look at what Jasper has in store for next season. Jasper’s Spring/Summer 2012 collection is lithe, sporty and feminine. Pitched from the shoulder, unrestricted yet precise. Innovation in construction and detail with wraps, straps, ties and the cleanest approach to cut. In summer wool, cotton piqué, polished cotton, crepes and silk the palette resides in black, white, silvered-grey and saturated geranium tones. Simple and controlled. Precision resin is layered in graphic shapes for boxy clutches, shoulder bags and components in clear, milk, and translucent black and red tones. Pattern is formed in weightless silk tulle and georgette. Pared down and unaffected in a monastic black silk crepe tux. The back is bared in floor length dresses - singular in their bold purity. A distinctive air of ease highlights the disciplined lack of grandeur. The flagship store at 36 Sackville Street occupies one of London’s finest postcodes in the heart of Mayfair. It is just a stone’s throw from Fortnum and Mason, the Royal Academy of Arts and Saville Row. Jasper Conran blends contemporary with tradition, showcasing his bespoke womenswear, made-to-measure menswear, bridal, living and dining collections here. Next Summer’s spirits are high and heady with a relaxed, carefree collection that embraces Paul Smith’s modern, masculine aesthetic for women. Light-as-a-feather fabrics in deconstructed shapes are soft and airy giving layered pieces a cool simplicity. Mannish, tailored pieces in smooth fabrics are sleek and fitted; an offwhite double breasted suit is elegant and sophisticated worn open at the neck. Silk handkerchief checks are flattering in oversize proportions; shirts are tucked into slim trousers or drawstring pants worn low on the waist. Laced-trimmed georgette dresses add a touch of femininity, casually
wrapping around the waist to create a sensual silhouette. Pretty, soft-washed powder tones of blush, lavender and mauve sit next to a more masculine range of chambray blues and steely greys whilst vibrant shots of bright buttercup, jade and bordeaux bring optimistic block colour highlights to the palette. Hazy florals add depth, their petals inked with dark tones. For Spring/Summer 2012, Jaeger London is inspired by the glamour of the late 60s /early 70s jet set and their hideaways in far-flung, exotic destinations. This season sees the Jaeger London woman landing on the isle of Mustique, the exclusive playground of British rock stars and royalty. Imagine the back of a villa open onto the ocean, the billowing curtains blowing gently in the sea breeze. Her wardrobe epitomises the laid-back elegance of the island, blended with British colonial references, rich colours and textures and inspired by Jaeger’s iconic early 1970s advertising campaigns shot against backdrops of famous locations. Since 2005, Jaeger has focused on UK brand expansion, including its return to Harrods and Selfridges (the brand became the first retailer to operate independently within Selfridges in the 1930s). Jaeger has 45 premium UK freestanding stores, including the Jaeger London branded stores in prime London locations, and significant shop-in-shop presence in Harrods, Selfridges, Harvey Nichols, Fenwick, House of Fraser and John Lewis. The trend for 70s fashion continued at House of Holland where their spring/summer 2012 collection had a pastel punk edge. Inspirations were Skins and Punks, SKA revival and South Beach & Miami palette. Highlights included Oversized mobre leopard, lurex string knits, laser-cut fishnet leather, hand painted python belts and cuffs and Reworked House of Holland signature tartan. House of Holland’s collection is nothing shy of colour with mint, lilac, apricot and French Navy being featured - the clothes were fun and, as always, Henry isn’t taking fashion too seriously. Drawing inspiration from notions as diverse as mythical warriors, fishing on the Amazon, his ongoing fascination with the black lit paintings of Pierre Soulages, and the languid tones of Hank Williams. John Rocha’s exploration of textures and structures and the stories they can tell. Blurring the senses between fragile and bold, wild and gentle, there is a certain duality in the collection, John creates an atmosphere of tough romanticism, his women appearing at once fierce and serene. John’s palette is, as ever, simply beautiful - essentially monochrome - black in all its depths, honey and soft gold, rose and broken white. Tints and hues are realised in fluid silk georgette, crepes and linen, crisp in silk organza, cottons, and extraordinary surfaces. The modern silhouette is sculpted in structured volume, surfaces densely worked in patchwork crochets, leathers and hand tucked raffia, or slender draping the body in softly pleated asymmetry, easy tailoring and elongated skirts and trousers John’s Spring Summer 2012 collection is informed by his enduring love of structure, texture and form, and his particular view of strength and tenderness. Cool Earth has a plan to save the Rainforest. If we don’t save the Rainforest- Forget it! First we saved the Rainforest. Will they ever know we saved the planet? Most of you know that I’ve always used my fashion shows as a platform for my belief in the importance of social justice and the urgent need to fight climate change. I introduce the Rainforest charity, Cool Earth, and a campaign that is very close to my heart - a plan to save the most vulnerable Rainforest areas by 2020. We must begin today - tomorrow is too late. Governments have been talking about saving the Rainforest for 40 years. Now, only half of it is left. Since launching in 2007, Cool Earth has worked with indigenous Rainforest people to protect 2.5 million acres in the Western Amazon and block the advance of illegal logging- the first stage in most Rainforest destruction. We plan to extend this effective community-lead model along the most critical arcs of deforestation in the Amazon, the Congo Basin and Borneo- the groundwork has already been laid. We need your help to continue. I am personally supporting Cool Earth and investing in our future. This show marked the start of our fundraising campaign for Cool Earth- we will have the official launch in November. I’m inviting
my friends, celebrities and everyone interested in saving our beautiful world to join me. Think about getting involved. Find out more about playing your part at www.coolearth.org. Remember: No Rainforest, No Planet. We have less than 10 years to keep what is left! Inspired by tribal body paint and the work of contemporary artist Kim Joon, David Koma’s Spring/Summer 2012 collection focuses on the body as a canvas. Kim Joon decorates intertwining bodies with fluid painting; David reinterprets this concept by using devore to act as a delicate second skin that conceals yet reveals the female form. Imitating the masterful artistry of Polynesian tribal tattoos, combinations of devore prints from small and intricate to large, abstract blocks reference the ‘Pe’a’, the traditional male tattoo covering the body from the waist to the knees. The bold ‘Pe’a’ symbolizes men respected for courage; David similarly designs for a strong and powerful female muse. The African zulu skirt and Dinka men’s corset are interpreted as handcrafted leather belts with fringing and pleats, that enclose a tailored and body conscious silhouette in light wools and silks. Combining the traditional Scottish kilt with tribal layering creates feminine, high waisted skirts with pleated panel effects. This season sees a continuation of David Koma’s third collaboration with Alain Quilici who has designed exclusive footwear for the collection. The Maria Grachvogel Spring/Summer 2012 collection is a feast of colour, print and texture. The palette is vibrant and fresh with bold shots of raspberry, apple and pristine white that sit alongside languid tones of blossom, clay and ash. Signature Maria Grachvogel pieces such as the beautifully cut magic trousers are given an innovative twist this season with the introduction of a skinny leg pant with a cool ankle drape and a wrap palazzo with a wide, fluid leg. Maria’s iconic catsuit appears in fresh white crepe, blossom and snake print wool. This season sees the launch of Atalanta Weller for Maria Grachvogel; an exclusive footwear line and design collaboration featuring a statement, cut-away shoe boot in snakeskin, ash and blossom suede, and a sculpted spiked court. Maria Grachvogel also celebrates the opening of her new London flagship store at 18 Culford Gardens, SW3. The store has been designed by Russell Sage, the designer behind the interiors at the Savoy Grill, the restaurant at Claridges, the Zetter Townhouse and Stapleford Park.

It isn’t so different from the women’s shows - there’s the clothes, the models, the celebrities - but it is more relaxed. London Fashion Week was brought to a stylish close as the men took to the catwalk for spring/summer 2012. The main attractions covered Mexican influences, dapper suits, and exotic and paisley prints. This season, the Topman boy would not look out of place leaving a smoking Parisian jazz club during the early hours of the early 1950s. Time travel decadence aside, there were silk paisley shirts, tweed suits, lurex fisherman jumpers and fake fur. It went down a treat. Topman delivered a fine show and the very heart of menswear day. SPG, that’s Sir Philip Green, not Sarah Jessica Parker - the billionaire was THE VIP at the Topman show. Christopher Shannon showed us that tassels could bring a whole new lease of life to the humble shirt, while James Small drew quite s celebrity crowd - including Kate Moss and Jamie Hince - to see his floral shirts and shorts and Oliver Spencer made coral the colour of the season. “Menswear fashion in London is alive and kicking and I’m always proud to wear British designers,” said actor Luke Evans, also seen at Pringle of Scotland earlier in the week, too. “Very interesting to see Alistair Carr’s new vision. His designs are strong and fresh. This has been my first London Fashion Week and it was great to have the opportunity to see two very British designers and their work,” he told us. Fashion Week is one of the highest profile fashion events in the world and one of the ‘big four’ international catwalk influencers. The event is organised by the British Fashion Council (BFC) and funded by a number of sponsors (including Canon Europe current headline sponsor for seven consecutive seasons). London Fashion Week puts London and British Fashion firmly on the global stage, generating orders in the region of £100m; the event itself contributes £20 million to the London economy in terms of direct spend and attracts visitors from over 25 countries including US, France, Italy, Russia, Middle East, China and UAE. Can teeth whitening damage teeth? No. Teeth whitening is a safe and effective technique that is scientifically proven. The treatment involves the use of custom fitting whitening trays and a very small amount of whitening gel (carbamide peroxide). You need to apply the gel to teeth for 1-2 hours a day for 2-3 weeks. The whitening occurs via an oxygenation process within the structure of teeth. Problems can occur if you have ill fitting trays or if you use certain ‘over the counter’ whitening products. For the best advice and your total safety, it is always best to have professional teeth whitening with the dentist.

here is an increasing trend for both men and women to seen non-surgical, non-invasive methods for achieving a younger look. There are various options available that fall into this category, including wrinkle relaxing injections such as Botox®, dermal fillers and skin peels, to name just a few. Erika Moore recently visited Sister Kay Greveson at her clinic in Hampstead after becoming increasingly frustrated by her lines and wrinkles. Here she outlines her experience. I work in a job that involves dealing with clients on a daily basis, so my appearance is important. I was increasingly aware of the lines on my forehead and between my eyes. I always felt as though I looked angry, and older than I was, even though I am only in my early 30’s. I approached Sister Kay Greveson her clinic within Aquarius Spa, Hampstead, about two months ago as I had been recommended to her by a friend. I was initially nervous as I have never had any sort of treatment like that before. I was worried about having the injections and what I would look like afterwards but Kay put my mind at ease immediately. We had a detailed chat about what results I wanted from the treatment; she took a medical history and some photographs. Kay explained that Botox® is a safe, naturally occurring protein that works by blocking nerve

She gave me the option of using a ‘numbing’ local anaesthetic cream, which I took. Despite being nervous, I did not find the procedure bad at all. Kay talked me through each step and made sure I was comfortable throughout. She was very gentle and I hardly felt the injections; it certainly wasn’t as bad as I had
imagined. She explained that it would take between 2 and 14 days for the full results to be visible and advised me to come back after this time so she could check on the result and have a ‘dose adjustment’ of treatment if required. It was so exciting to see the lines disappearing little by little each day and I don’t think I’ve ever looked in the mirror so much as I did in those first 2 weeks! In the end I did not need more treatment as I was more than pleased with the results. I have a natural look and still have facial expression but no lines!! Botox® is not permanent, lasting only three to four months, after which, the lines that were there prior to treatment slowly return. I will definitely have it again when the time comes as it has made me feel so much more confident with my appearance. I feel that I look more relaxed and don’t have an ‘angry’ look from frowning all of the time.

Dr Ariel Haus, an expert in anti-ageing is inviting patients who want instant results for a fresher look to opt for Restylane Vital in restoring skin vitality whilst combating the signs of ageing. Treatments are available now at Dr Haus’ Harley Street clinic and all treatments result in skin looking and feeling both smoother and more toned. Creams and moisturisers simply cannot combat signs of ageing or nurture the skin in the same way that Restylane Vital does. Promoting the production of healthy skin by balancing the nutritional environment of the skin at cellular level by attracting and releasing water when needed, Restylane Vital boosts skin elasticity leaving it looking smoother. Skin condition is evidently improved and the lustre restored. Examples include prominent veins and sun damage on say the backs of hands; Restylane Vital combats the combined effects of ageing eliminating the visible damage. As with all of Dr Haus’ treatments- Restylane Vital is clinically proven and used by him in a safe environment. A recent clinical study in Germany demonstrated that Restylane Vital improves skin elasticity and decreases skin surface roughness. The results are smoother, firmer, toned, healthy looking skin with an overall revitalised appearance. The procedure is simple, pain free and quick. Targeting a broad range of areas from face, neck, hands and the area between the neck and breasts, it replenishes the Hyaluronic acid lost through

To have a brow out of fashion or shape at Ladies Day would be a sin! Getting the best shape of eyebrows for your face can be an insurmountable problem. When I apply semipermanent make-up I always draw the shape on your face first so we can see if it really suits you and to make sure you are happy. With all the celebrity focus and new TV programmes, Made in Chelsea and the likes, the look can get a little convoluted. How do you know who to go to and what shape to choose? The most important piece of advice I can give you is: “Choose your semipermanent expert very very carefully” Here are the top 5 most asked questions by my new and prospective clients. How long Have you been doing semipermanent make-up
I have been doing semipermanent make-up for 20 years. I am constantly updating my qualifications as I believe it is important to remain current and in touch with the latest techniques and equipment. There are many training systems and schools all over the UK now, 6 286O JCUTLY O 2B0E1 1R 2 0 1 1
however one interesting point. “As little as 10% of people trained go onto do semi-permanent makeup professionally”. is semi-permanent make-up painful?
I always use a numbing cream which completely de-sensitises the area. One tip is, choose the timing of your procedure as your skin is often more sensitive before
use the hair stroke method. is it tHe same as a tatoo?
No, semi-permanent make-up is more superficial, meaning I do not permeate into the lower area of the skin bed. Also I only use organic ink which does not contain toxins and is a more expensive product. How long does it last?
it is nice to be on-trend However a more important point is tHat tHe sHape really suits your individual look. and during your period. will it look natural?
It depends which procedure you have, there are a few different techniques, for a very natural look. I use a hair stroke procedure which is tiny brush strokes giving a fine hair like finish, air brush is also a very nice finish as it creates a fine shadow, over which I tend to
Semi-permanent make-up last for up to 3 years, although I do suggest a colour boost after 6 months, I do charge a fee for this service, however it will keep your brows looking fresh and boost the depth of colour. I hope that covers some of the nagging questions. Now onto what is on trend this season. I have been doing my
research as ever and have tracked down the sought after Celebrity make-up artist Beth Alderson to ask her what is on-trend this season for brows. Beth say’s: “Big brows this season, my top tip “They must be controlled and defined with crisp edges. Apply a good quality eye brightener under the brow to really make them pop” It can be helpful when you come for your consultation to bring a picture of your dream brow as I can then see what you are hoping for and if that look is achievable. It is nice to be on-trend however a more important point is that the shape really suits your individual look. Here is the list of Celebrities whose brows we love! Kate Middleton Kim Kardasian Keira Knightley J Lo Anyway all this said..... I am looking forward to hearing from some of you. Until next time be lovely and look wonderful. Tracey x This month we are having a Summer special 25% of your semi-permanent eyebrow treatment. Please quote voucher number 0001 to receive your Summer Special. This starts with an initial consultation with one of the two founders, either at their showroom or in your own home, when they will take the time to

HOUSE GARDEN ne thing in life is indisputable, no two persons idea of the ideal garden are ever the same. There are those whose sole aim in life is to produce and maintain the ‘bowling green’ lawn, others like that formality to stretch to other parts of the garden with regimented beds and borders.
do so usually through lack of watering or erratic watering. Other forms available are balls, cones, spirals or pompons, these are seen less often due to requiring a little more care to maintain their shape.
The majority of us however fall into a third category we like to have a go at taming nature but at the same time or cost restraints mean that we introduce formality but at the same time allow nature to run her course with just a little helping hand from us. One of the simplest ways of introducing formality is in the use of topiary. What is topiary you may be asking, this is a term that often is used in a broad sense, in my definition it is anything where you are training by pruning or tying in branches to create a formal shape. Some people hate topiary and see it as unnatural, however the same could be said about any plant that is trained and few see any problem when training is used on the likes of roses to encourage flowering, or fruit trees to control fruiting. What is more important is trying to ensure that whatever plant you are training is put in the correct setting. Topiary should be seen as living sculpture, something that adds to the environment rather than diminishing it, some of the best natural sculptures are those where nature itself has been involved initially in developing a unique shape such as gnarled stem olives or natural bonsai. The simplest topiary are the half standard plants which you often see either side of doorways, or on patios, these come in a huge range of textures and sizes. They are generally easy to look after rarely needing pruning more than twice a year, those people who struggle to keep them 8 0 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 1
TAMING MOTHER NATURE
For those of you who like the ability to develop this formality further should look to planting topiary in beds, along driveways or other vistas, providing a guard of honour taking you or your focus to where you want it to go. This is particularly effective where an avenue of trees would be over bearing. Used in this way the plants are not only adding interest in their own right but acting as a framework to highlight other objects, whether this is the front of your house, a man made sculpture or a prized plant. In this scenario under planting the topiary with beds of buxus or more informal lavender or rosemary can produce a striking effect. So far I have mentioned the taller topiary but equally formally trained plants such as buxus can be used to great effect to provide a uniform ‘mini hedge’ around beds of more colourful plants. My favourites are the larger topiary such as the gnarled olive or cloud trees which although work well alongside other pieces also look great as a feature on their own. Other topiary take the form of pleached or espalier standard trees which not only look good in their own right but provide excellent screening to hide those views you would prefer not to see. Enough of my ramblings I need to help unload a delivery of hedging plants fresh from the field. What a joy! GreenPleasant Green Pleasant “Whilst the National Trust, Woodland Trust and others are driving forces in countryside conservation, more than 70% of land is privately owned. Our mission at Managed Acres is to help owners of small country estates to manage their land in ways that complement the conservation efforts of the bigger trusts,” explained Mike Jones (Managing Director of Managed Acres) YOUR OWN ESTATE MANAGER Founded by Mike Jones and Ben Chick, Managed Acres brings a new dimension to estate management, specialising in the upkeep and maintenance of small private estates. Clients are assigned their own personal estate manager, to work on their estate 3 or 4 days a month. With an emphasis on conservation, the manager prepares a 3 year plan for the estate, against which progress is updated on a monthly basis. “ 8 2 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 1
All our managers are fully qualified in estate and countryside management and bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to help our clients plan, develop and maintain their estates” explained Ben. Recent conservation initiatives that Managed Acres have supported include “The Great Elm Project” where The Conservation Foundation is attempting to unlock the mystery of why some trees survived Dutch elm disease which wiped out over 25 million trees in the UK. “To support the foundation we are supplying, planting and monitoring elm saplings for any of our clients who wish to participate in this experiment”. For anyone wanting to plant a whole new wood, the Woodland Trust’s “Jubilee Woods Project” is set to create hundreds of new woods, transforming our landscape in a generation and
making a real and meaningful difference for many years to come. MANAGING YOUR LAND Whilst currently covering Hampshire, Surrey and WestSussex, the company has plans to expand their operation into neighboring counties. “For any potential client, interested in finding out what we can offer, I’m happy to come and spend a couple of hours walking around their estate “ explained Ben, himself a qualified countryside estate manager. “I can then discuss their plans and assess how many days a month would be required for us to manage and maintain their estate”

Rebranding & Expanding t’s been a busy few months for one Surrey estate agency, not only have they expanded, acquiring a fifth branch in Esher, but they have undergone an exciting rebrand.
After ten years in business and an excellent reputation already established in Surrey, independent estate agency, Gascoigne Billinghurst decided to rebrand their business, strengthening and developing their identity and distinguishing them from their competitors. It was important to retain a link with their existing identity, as it was familiar in the local area, so after much consideration Gascoigne Billinghurst has become ‘Grosvenor Billinghurst’. With branches already in Cobham, Claygate, Hinchley Wood and Woking, Grosvenor Billinghurst KAREN MUDDYMAN & AMELIA WHISTON-DEW

has increased their business with the recent acquisition of an Esher office. Esher was a natural progression for growth and had already proved successful for the company, with their neighbouring offices selling houses in this area.
Ian Davies, Managing Director, is thrilled with the changes, “The rebrand has given the agency a real boost, not only in terms of visibility and image, but now there’s no reason to confuse our great sales and letting performance and friendly staff with anyone else. And with the recent opening of our new Esher High Street branch, this is an exciting and challenging time for Grosvenor Billinghurst.” The distinctive new name and branding achieve the right balance
TOD & HILARY AKKER & GARETH DAVIES
between traditional and modern. ‘Grosvenor’ brings a classic identity to the estate agency, with the bold new colour palette of black, lime and grey adding a fresh, contemporary feel. “Maintaining our trademark wonky ‘G’ was crucial, as it’s instantly recognisable, especially on our sales and lettings boards” says Davies. “It’s what our customers often comment that they notice when they’re driving down a street. By using a crisp, fresh, lime green we’ve injected new life into it, so hopefully it will stand out even more!” The champagne and canapés flowed as over fifty local businesses and clients celebrated the rebrand, there were even mini cupcakes for those with a sweet tooth! Guests included local MP, Dominic Rabb, Octagon Homes, Morgan Russell Solicitors, Moore By Design, Maxian Homes,
DAN STOCKS & RICHARD ANGEL
and past and present clients. “The evening was a great success and we received a very positive response from our guests. I’m looking forward to the future as Grosvenor Billinghurst,” say Ian Davies. Grosvenor Billinghurst has enjoyed great success in Surrey, since its conception in 2002, so what is it about this agency that makes it different? “It’s all about listening to the client’s needs and matching them to their perfect property. As specialists in residential sales and lettings, we have built excellent relationships with the local community and formed close associations with professionals including, landlords, developers and search agents, this enables us to offer the best possible properties and service to our clients,” says Ian Davies. five offices in Surrey, they know the market very well and after nearly forty years in the business, Ian Davies knows what makes the area such a desirable place to live. “Surrey attracts people from all over the world, with the ACS International School in Cobham and an outstanding range of homes, combined with the countryside and fantastic transport links to London and both international airports; it’s easy to see why the area appeals to so many. Russian buyers have been a growing phenomenon of the last decade, so much so that Grosvenor Billinghurst has added a Russian section to our web site, and I have been out to visit clients face to face in Moscow, Kiev (Ukraine) and Cyprus. The same qualities that attract business people, large houses in private
settings and excellent transport communications, also attract celebrities, sportspeople, famous faces and even the odd rock star!” Private estates are in great demand because buyers want the security, privacy, setting and they have proven to be a great investment. “A prime example of this is the prestigious St. George’s Hill estate in Weybridge, one of the most sought after places to live in Surrey, where property prices start at around £3million,” says Ian Davies. “We recently sold a beautiful home at just under £9m, built by a retired footballer, the house was bought by a European family, who wanted to be near enough to commute to London, enjoy a leafy setting, but be able to send their children to good local schools.” Over 70% of Surrey is protected

greenbelt and there are more publically accessible green spaces than virtually any other place in the country, so land is at a premium and there is a strong demand for new luxury homes. “We are often asked by clients to source a plot of land, or introduce them to respected developers. We are currently marketing Lime House, a brand new £2.495 million, high specification family home, in a prime central Esher location, which I’m sure will be snapped up pretty quickly!” “With more golf courses than any other English county, you’ll find many exclusive properties with amazing view of the greens. Probably the most renowned of these is the Wentworth Estate, which encompasses one of Surrey’s premier residential areas together with a world famous golf course,”
DAVID CREFFIELD ESHER
says Davies. “We recently sold a property, in a spectacular setting, backing onto Moore Place golf course in Esher. As it was an off plan purchase the buyers were able to finish it to their own specification and even added a swimming pool to make the most of the view!” So with their dynamic new image, recent expansion into Esher and extensive knowledge, in this competitive and prime Surrey market, the future looks bright for Grosvenor Billinghurst.
