English Wine Week is a national campaign, designed to raise awareness of English wine across the country – from supermarkets to independent wine merchants, delicatessens to hotels, pubs, bars and restaurants.

The UK is now recognised as a premium wine-producing region, with English and Welsh wines winning many prestigious international awards. There are over 400 vineyards in England and Wales covering some 3,500 acres and producing sparkling and still wines.

Denbies Wine Estate, England’s largest vineyard is situated on the outskirts of Dorking in the heart of the Surrey Hills. The vineyard was planted in 1986, with 265 acres of vines, and commands an impressive location overlooking Box Hill, the pinnacle of the 2012 Olympic Cycling Road Race. Denbies produces nearly 10% of the total production of English wine.

The Investec Derby Festival has announced British Supermodel Jodie Kidd as Official Face of the event and milliner to the stars, Philip Treacy will continue his role of Official Hat Designer for his third consecutive year. The news coincides with the unveiling of three unique images where Jodie can be seen modelling a variety of styles inspired by three areas of the event, The Hill, the Duchess Stand and The Queen’s Stand.

Historic Royal Palaces and PWR Events are thrilled to announce the complete line up for this years Hampton Court Palace Festival; George Benson, The Beach Boys, Dionne get this Warwick, Jamie Cullum, Van Morrison, Rick Astley & Jason Donovan, Jools Holland and the edition online Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra will all perform in Henry VIII’s open air courtyard.

Intriguing and Inspired Birtley House Sculpture Garden 2014. Saturday May 3rd until Sunday June 1st, at Birtley House near Guildford

N

ow in it’s 6th year, The Sculpture Garden at Birtley House has become an important date in the creative arts calendar. Last year, an intriguing and inspired collection of work by over 50 professional artists and amateurs attracted nearly 4,000 visitors to the beautiful grounds of Birtley House in Bramley, just outside Guildford.

This year over 150 sculptures will be displayed including Juliet Scott’s elegant bronze resins and Mark Reed’s deliciously named “Ammonite Slice”. Also Jeremy Moulsdale’s sculptures reflecting peace and tranquility his work ‘Flying High’ was part of an award winning garden at Hampton Court Flower Show in 2011. Jilly Vainer,

a yoga teacher and artist, creates beautiful sculptures of animals and Lisa Pettibone creates distinctive works in glass.

The textural quality of the sculptures is of particular interest to the partially sighted and the level grounds of Birtley House make this an easily accessible exhibition. All sculpture is for sale.

The 2014 exhibition will be opened by the eminent artist Ian Campbell-Briggs ARBS who recently designed and created a sculpture that will be a permanent feature in front of Guildford’s GLive.

ainshill 18th century landscape garden in Cobham is not only an important heritage site it also has ecologically important habitats. It was first created by the Honourable Charles Hamilton (1704-86) and was one of the first gardens to reflect a trend away from geometric formality to a wilder, naturalistic style which featured woodland, meadows and a serpentine lake.

Through careful conservation by the Painshill Park Trust, which was set up to restore the landscape garden in 1981, these areas still remain and are home to a variety of flora and fauna. For example, over 50 plant species can be found in the meadows and recent surveys show an increase in the number of insects and birds at Painshill.

Painshill provides rich sustenance for wetlands birds. It is a sheltered spot and a relatively safe environment where many of these birds choose to nest and rear their young.

The dense vegetation on the lake, including the banks and islands, provide aquatic food for birds such as the moorhen, coot, tufted duck and mallard. The mute swans and the different species of geese will feed on water plants too and also in the nearby fields in spring and summer.

Because of the fish levels the great crested grebe, heron and kingfisher are also frequent sights at Painshill. This food source also attracts occasional visitors; the cormorant can be expected throughout the year and the goosander in early or late winter.

In 2011, the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) recognised how important Painshill had become for wetland birds and started carrying out monthly surveys. The purpose of the visits is to gather valuable data on the trends of and fluctuations in numbers of wetlands birds.

Alan Castree who conducts these surveys on a voluntary basis on behalf of the BTO explains; “The BTO, with three other conservation partners, coordinates the Wetlands birds survey (WeBS), which is one of the longest running and most comprehensive national surveys. It embraces both coastal and inland waters like the lake at Painshill which is an important stretch of water adjacent to the River Mole.�

Painshill is also home to many other birds including finches, woodpeckers, tits, warblers, chats and thrushes.

At this time of the year the landscape is alive with bird song, for example you can hear the sweet song of the robin, the musical thrush and blackbird, and the babbling melody of the blackcap.

celebrity golf day at wentworth Lusso Homes host event for The Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity

M

ay 7th will see Lusso Homes hosting their 5th consecutive celebrity golf day in aid of Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity. Director, Neil Jones says ‘We absolutely love to put on this event each year and are so grateful to the celebrities who attend and support us, plus our 300 + guests who very generously help us raise huge sums of money each time.’

Many well known names from the world of Sport, TV and radio attend each year including Rugby stars Danny Care, Rob Henderson, Nick Easter, Karl Dickson, Martin Corry and Phil Vickery, footballers such as Matt Jarvis of West Hamm, legends Tony Cottee, Tony Gale, Terry Mancini, Glen Hoddle, Pat Jennings plus TV presenters John Inverdale, Charlotte Hawkins, Andrew Castle, Tiff Needell and comics Bobby Davro and Al Murray.

This year thirty teams will play at Wentworth’s beautiful Edinburgh course,with further evening guests arriving to bring the total number of attendees to a record 312! The first event back in 2010 was a huge success with almost 200 attendees but each year the event has grown and grown and is now 50% bigger.

The golf day raises money for Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity which helps the families of life threatened and terminally children by providing emotional and practical support, from diagnosis and throughout treatment to bereavement and beyond. Rainbow Trust is unique as it tailors its support to each family.

Where most organisations provide families with set services, Rainbow Trust asks the family where they need support and then provides it in those areas.

Rainbow Trust’s Family Support Team based in Leatherhead, currently supports families across the whole of Surrey.

The golf day raises money through team registration fees and an auction in the evening at the golf club. This year’s event aims to beat the £47,799 raised last year.

involved in this day and we are really grateful to all the celebrities that give up their free time to come along.”

If you have not already had the opportunity to visit an English Vineyard, the spring season is the perfect time, the vines flourish at this time of the year with bud burst taking place mid to end April, and flowering taking place end of May to mid June.

English Wine Week starts over Spring Bank Holiday which is also half term holiday for most schools.

Denbies annually celebrates English wine Week with a variety of events commencing with the sparkling Outdoor Vineyard Train Trail and Gallery Restaurant dinner, the perfect way to enjoy the early summer evenings. Sparkling wine and canapés are served at the highest point of the vineyard with magnificent views (cameras recommended) followed by dinner in the third floor Gallery Restaurant, offering a panoramic vista over the vineyard and Box Hill. On the Thursday, 29th May, Surrey Heritage are presenting an informal talk on ‘John Broadwood & Sons’, Two centuries of Musical history, this tutored wine tasting includes a tasting of Broadwood Folly , named after the piano manufacturer and the folly on Box Hill.

a morning guided walking tour though the vines concluding with a tasting of four of Denbies wines accompanied by a selection of local cheese.

Most recently Denbies was awarded an International Wine Challenge gold award for the celebrated 2010 Chalk Ridge Rose, heralded as ’ the best rose in the world’, a major achievement for an English wine producer. This was followed last year by three gold awards for Denbies Noble Harvest Dessert wine, made from the Ortega grape variety. This wine can only be made when the grapes reach optimum conditions, and occurs very rarely. Denbies is constantly developing and pioneering new challenges. In 2010 Denbies planted 4 acres of sauvignon blanc, the first commercial plot to be grown in the UK. The first vintage is due to be released in September 2014 following a successful harvest in 2013.

It is certainly exciting time for an industry which is not new to the UK,

it is generally agreed that the Romans introduced the vine to Britain.

It is with great pleasure that Cartier announces its 30th year of polo sponsorship

n Sunday 15th June 2014, the Cartier Queen’s Cup Final will mark Cartier’s 30th year of polo 15th sponsorship. As the longest standing polo sponsor in history, “The King of Jewellers”, is proud to celebrate and honour its longstanding relationship with polo, the “King of Sports”. We would like to take the opportunity to look back and celebrate the wonderful years that Cartier has been privileged to support polo worldwide.

Cartier first sponsored the International Day in 1984 and since then, the Cartier International Day became the largest and most prestigious polo spectator event in the world, attracting over 25,000 people in Windsor Great Park at Guards Polo Club.

It was for 27 years that Cartier sponsored the International Polo day at Guards Polo Club before deciding to sponsor the Queen’s Cup, one of the world’s leading polo tournaments. THE GREAT BRITISH DRAMA Tuesday 17th – Saturday 21st June 2014

R

oyal Ascot, one of the iconic summer highlights of the British sporting and social calendar opens its gates on Tuesday 17th June, for five days of world class racing, pageantry, high fashion and fine dining, celebrated through this year’s theme of ‘The Great British Drama’.

The centrepiece of Ascot’s year, Royal Ascot, is arguably the world’s most famous race meeting. First organised in 1711 at the behest of Queen Anne, and attended by British Monarchs ever since, each day of Royal Ascot traditionally begins with the Royal procession in which the Queen along with her family

and guests parade in front of the packed grandstands in their horse-drawn carriages.

Increasingly in recent years, the five-day meeting attracts some of the best horses from around the globe and Royal Ascot 2014 promises to be another draw for the world’s best racehorses.

The magnificent cavalry horses of the King’s Troop Royal Artillery will be galloping WWW1 gun carriages across the grand arena at Surrey County Show on Stoke Park, Guildford, on May 26.

nd the transformation from Surrey farmhands to Tommies marching off to the trenches will be played out in the display showing the development of farm machinery over the last century. Surrey Infantry Museum, based in Clandon Park, is bringing a special roadshow to Stoke Park with an interactive display and exhibits showing what happened to our local boys when they left their farms and went to war. The museum would like visitors to come along with their family WW1 memorabilia for identification and information.

Surrey County Show is the biggest one-day agricultural show in the country and it gathers an incredible number of beautifully presented farm animals – cattle, sheep, pigs, goats and poultry to Stoke Park. The countryside with its milking parlours and shearing sheds, sheep pens and duck ponds literally comes to town.

There is a strong focus on local food, and this year the chefs in the Food Theatre include Ben Piette, Masterchef: The Professionals semi-finalist, who runs the London House restaurant in Old Woking, the Four Gables Cookery School and Fernando Stovell from Stovells Restaurant in Chobham. Alan Titchmarsh celebrates 50th Anniversary of RHS Britain in Bloom RHS Vice President Alan Titchmarsh is designing the RHS Britain in Bloom garden at this year’s show, sponsored by M&G Investments, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of RHS Britain in Bloom and Alan’s own 50 years in horticulture. It is almost 30 years since Alan has designed a garden at the world’s most famous horticultural event.

This year Alan is joining forces with another RHS Chelsea Flower Show Gold medal winner, Kate Gould, to create ‘From the Moors to the Sea - a celebration of RHS Britain in Bloom’, which will be a garden feature demonstrating how the 300,000 volunteers help to make Britain bloom as well as exploring Alan’s relationship with horticulture through his life. Pavilion exhibits commemorate outbreak of First World War Life on the frontline in World War I will be the focus of a floral exhibit in the Great Pavilion at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show this year. Birmingham City Council has joined forces with the Royal British Legion and the charity Thrive for the floral exhibit. The display will feature wartime memorabilia as well as giant poppies and reconstructions of the trenches.

Pennard Plants will also be commemorating the outbreak of the war with two back-toback gardens reflecting the times before and after 1914.

Chelsea Show Gardens unveiled • The bright young stars of horticulture will be taking centre stage with many gardens being designed by new, up-and-coming talent, with exhibitors giving young people the opportunity to be a part of this world-class show.

• Hugo Bugg, will be designing The RBC Waterscape Garden, for Royal Bank of Canada. Embrace the Rain has been designed to illustrate global water issues, whilst demonstrating practical water management solutions for the home gardener.

• Brothers, Harry and David Rich, are together designing a garden for environmentally responsibly utility provider, Bord Na Mona. The brothers return to Chelsea with their first show garden, after having designed an Artisan Garden at the show in 2013.

• Inspired by the personal experience of his brother’s tours to Afghanistan with the armed forces, Matt Keightley, will also be designing his first show garden. Hope on the Horizon, for servicemen’s charity, Help for Heroes, represents the complex path towards recovery experienced by injured and sick personnel.

combine the classic with the contemporary and in his plan for The M&G Garden he is using ancient elements of water, shade and planting to create a paradise garden fit for 2014. The rills are a nod to the four rivers that are said to have flowed through the Garden of Eden, which many might think of as the original paradise garden. Behind the fountain, flanked by yew hedging, is a vast limestone relief depicting the Tree of Life, painstakingly engraved across five panels by Cleve himself. The tree’s carved roots reach out to the planting below it, giving life to The M&G Garden and representing the roots of many gardens throughout the world. Cleve West says “M&G has done a tremendous job working with the RHS as title sponsor of RHS Chelsea and I’m excited to be returning to the Show and working with them.”

A Fascination with Pattern In an era of modern technology, British craftspeople with advanced specialist metalworking skills are increasingly rare. Mick Maxen is one such craftsman, widely regarded as the country’s finest maker of Damascus, or ‘pattern welded’, steel.

T

here can be few skills more specialised than the ancient and beautiful art of pattern welding.

Pattern welding involves the joining of metals of different composition to create a single new piece of metal.

Originally developed to create blades that were both hard and tough, the patterns caused by the forge-welding of different metals inevitably appealed to human creativity. For millennia, people have manipulated the metals during the process to create astonishingly sophisticated patterns, enhancing both utilitarian and decorative objects.

As British blacksmithing went into steep decline after World War II, the knowledge

and practice of such specialist techniques risked being lost forever. As blacksmithing was revived as a creative medium in the late 1970s, interest in its more unusual aspects was slowly rekindled, and a handful of metalworkers like Mick Maxen sought - with passion and commitment - to learn and perfect specific skills.

Lucy Quinnell, who curates and sells Mick’s work at Fire and Iron Gallery in Surrey, comments: “Mick is unusual. He is absolutely driven by an endless fascination with pattern, and he is unreservedly committed to excellence.

He has honed his exceptional skills over decades, and I can think of no-one else so happy to devote weeks or even months of time to the creation of pieces that are entirely speculative. It is so good to see him getting the huge international recognition and success he so richly deserves.”

Mick is now feted in the USA, and he has won numerous awards in the UK. Each piece he makes is exquisite, and finished to absolute perfection. Lucy says: “I love craft objects that are so flawless that I cannot imagine that they were made by a fellow human being. I am the proud owner of a Maxen lidded pot, and its gorgeous

pattern makes it an incredibly beautiful and unique thing; Mick gave it to us as a wedding present. My work colleague is getting married this summer, and Mick worked with her and her fiancé to create the Damascus billet from which their wedding rings have been made.

The pattern runs right through the metal – it is a mesmerising process, and the patterns never cease to amaze.”

Lucy also describes Mick as being “thirsty for knowledge and experience” when it comes to metalworking. He is always the first to offer to assist with special events at Fire and Iron, if it means exposure to a new process. Mick was one of six foundrymen who ran Fire and Iron’s first ever iron pour, where recycled iron was heated and poured into sand moulds, and he will be demonstrating iron smelting this summer at an international festival.

VALERIE COOPER Valerie Cooper has recently joined Downs Solicitors’ Family Team in Cobham, Surrey.

V

alerie is a highly experienced family solicitor specialising in mid to high asset value matrimonial finance cases and financial disputes arising from co-habitation. However, she never set out to be a matrimonial lawyer.

Her first job was in a small solicitors’ office in New Malden, Surrey working as a general practitioner advising on a range of legal issues, including matrimonial. Then, most of her work was of a commercial nature such as buying and selling businesses, including the sale of QPR football club. She was also advising the owners of Brentford Football Club. It was the 1980s and there weren’t very many female Solicitors, so when the practice saw an increase in requests from clients wanting to see a female matrimonial solicitor, the cases naturally got passed to Valerie. And the rest, as they say, is history.

experience as a matrimonial solicitor, she has undertaken a number of very high profile Russian divorces and difficult matters involving children.

One particular case that sticks in her mind relates to a teenage mother who was murdered by her baby’s father. The girl’s grandparents applied to adopt the child.

However, the father fought contact from prison. The matter was heard in the High Court. The grandparents contacted Valerie to act for them as the result of a note put through their front door simply saying “you need Valerie Cooper”.

The majority of Valerie’s work is by word of mouth and she enjoys an extensive reputation for family and matrimonial work, particularly in and around the Weybridge area. Valerie’s reputation even extends as far as Singapore!

So what makes her a good matrimonial solicitor? Having

a strong sense of what is right and wrong and fighting for the underdog. Also, having children, including two step children, has given her a better insight into the issues families face when a marriage breaks down.

She feels it has made her a better lawyer because she can empathize with her clients.

When she is not busy working, Valerie enjoys spending time with her family, playing golf and tennis. She was on the Board of St George’s Hill Tennis Club, Weybridge for 9 years and was their first female Chairman.

She still runs the mixed Surrey league teams.

She has even found time to take part in the Great North Run, the Blenheim Triathlon and Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life.

Her current challenge is a 7K run plus army assault course.

Obalon is a gastric balloon which occupies space at the top of the stomach. It gives the sensation of feeling full to help encourage patients to consume less calories. Charlotte did not experience hunger pains or ‘empty stomach’ feelings after the balloon was removed, and so far she has lost an extra 3lbs from continuing her healthy lifestyle changes. “I have been very pleased and impressed with Obalon and the fantastic results it has helped me achieve. I’m sure at some point I would have tried more weight loss options but I definitely would not have been able to lose the amount of weight that I have in the timeframe I have without the additional support of Obalon”.

I’m a self-confessed hair dye addict.

Blonde, red, even blue - you name it, I’ve tried it. So when I get the chance to use L’Oreal Paris Preference Wild Ombres, to give myself copper tips - minus the hefty salon price tag - I can’t resist. The range is designed to give your hair a two-tone effect, meaning you can dip-dye as much or as little of your locks as you want with a brush-on action. After mixing the colour and cream, I chose to apply the dye from below the earlobes. Then, I simply used the brush to swipe along to the ends of my hair. It’s easy to see where it’s been applied and, even with thick, long hair, there’s enough to ensure every strand’s covered. There’s no drip, no mess, and there’s even a nourishing conditioner to use afterwards. But once I wash off the dye, I have to admit, I’m pretty shocked - the copper’s extremely bright - not for wallflowers! But I love bright and bold, so I’m happy. Those expecting a more natural colour could be disappointed. You also won’t get the graduating ‘fade’ effect as shown on the box. To achieve that, you need to apply to ends for ten minutes first, and then progress upwards, so that the dye’s on some parts for longer. Overall though, it’s a great product which couldn’t be easier to use, and should appeal to anyone wanting to create a trendy, unique look for less than a tenner, without the worry of roots creeping through.

Money down the drain?

W

hen I sat down to write this month’s article I was intending to tell you about the different options available to enable you to water your garden. Like many things this was subject to change and I have decided that it would be better to explain some of the reasons why it can be beneficial to water, but in other situations it can merely be ‘money down the drain’!

The majority of people fall into the category of either watering plants because they can, watering when the weather is sunny or they only water plants

once they are wilting. This is no criticism of anybody, as with most of us time is precious and we feel we have better things to do with it.

With a better understanding of the role that water plays in the life of plants we can make much better use of a resource that is generally treated as a cheap, disposable commodity.

This assumption is however changing with our increasing population making it a more scarce resource and with the cost of it rising.

Plants use water to help provide support to it’s

structure, hence when soft plants wilt, the stems bend over, when you water them they stand upright again provided you have not left it too late! However this phenomenon is one of the last signs that a plant is under stress and therefore suffering. Long before then a lot of the chemical processes that lead to plant growth and therefore health, have slowed down or stopped.

To ensure healthy growth of your plants, which includes good foliage, abundant flowering and disease resistance, the use of artificial watering should be used to prevent your plants suffering from stress. A note of warning, if you over water your plants you will equally cause them stress resulting in exactly the same symptoms.

The need to water can vary throughout the year.

With plants grown in the open ground in the garden, the need to water is much less than for those in containers. The reason for this is twofold; plants in containers have very restricted root systems and in addition when it does rain it is often impossible for the water to penetrate into the root ball, due to the leaf canopy acting as an umbrella. The leaves of plants in the garden will also act as an umbrella, however the water from these will drip onto the soil outside the canopy allowing the unrestricted root system to get the water from there.

The main cause affecting the need for artificial watering in our gardens, even for those plants not in containers, is the fact that our gardens are artificial environments.

Our gardens are created within spaces surrounded by brick, concrete and tarmac which create rain shadows and radiate heat. Into that environment we put plants which are not necessarily adapted to the conditions in which they are placed and in addition we plant at much greater densities than nature intended. All of these factors combine to reduce the amount of water available to the plants and therefore create the potential for stress except in extremely wet conditions.

Where gardens contain lots of plants closely spaced, the need for watering is greater. Equally where the plants have lots of foliage this need is increased.

When to water is the big question and not easily answered. What I would advise is that for most plants, watering early in the year to avoid stress when leaves are developing is important, as stress at this time will result in the leaves not developing to their full potential.

Plants with stunted growth at this stage often do not recover fully however well you subsequently treat them. Once the foliage canopy has developed the watering may be able to be reduced back until the temperatures rise and watering will need to be increased again.

The amount of water to use is also a difficult one, but generally I prefer to water well, infrequently, rather than watering a little on a frequent basis. When you water soil, particularly dry soil, it often takes a while for the water to start penetrating deep into the ground.

With the majority of plants you want the root development to be deep, rather than shallow, as this is where the natural water will sit for the longest. To achieve deep penetration of the water a short watering is often insufficient, as most of it spreads out on the surface.

To get an idea of this I would advise using a small trowel to dig a sample hole in the soil occasionally near but not next to plants after watering to see how deep the water penetrates into the soil. www.plantsforall.co.uk M AY 2 0 1 4 6 3

Seall Landscapes In The Surrey Hills

I

was born in the Surrey Hills – born into me was a love of the inspiration given by nature. The landscapes and environment throughout the surrey Hills are best viewed in terms of archaeology as well as nature, as throughout it’s history back even to pre-Roman times it has been valued for it’s riches, both aesthetic & resource. This included it’s strong links with the cultivation and harvesting of timber for the manufacture of gun powder, which has meant that the naturally beautifully sculpted land has all been worked by the hand of man and of course woman. Sometimes I catch a glimpse of the hedgerows and their banks in spring time and I cannot think of a way of improving how they look or their place in their landscape.

– Sometimes I pass the same spot and don’t notice the same view. That is when I know that I need to call on the old and much forgotten Holmbury skill of leaning on a field gate and taking in the view for a good half an hour.

As a landscape and garden designer I believe

that part of my job is to connect my client with the beauty that is, or can be found in their greater landscape, For this, I use the garden as the medium.

Throughout the Surrey Hills the Arts and Crafts movement of architecture and it’s input on the garden is beautifully present, Lutyns, Vasey and of course Gertrude Jekyl.

The effects of these masters of their trade as well of the wealth of the old estates that funded them, the industry, the agriculture and the woodland management have left a legacy that needs to be appreciated, shared and managed. The landscape around us is a living breathing thing and as conservationist it is my privilege to work with wild flower meadows, ponds and lakes.

I consider it a gift to have lived my life up to now inside these Hills and through my garden building and conservation works (www.surreyhillsconservation.co.uk) I have the opportunity to pass that onto others and

that, makes me feel truly grateful.

Another new chapter is evolving as I write these words. Along with my family, Joanna and our two children Frankie and Max, we are setting up ‘Surrey Hills Yurts’. We are fortunate to have a small holding of just over 15 acres on the side of Leith Hill in the Heart of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Amongst our organic herd of pedigree Sussex Cattle, Gloucester Old Spot Pigs and varied wildlife, we are putting in six Ashe framed Yurts and a straw bale round house with a Hobbit front door. Here children and adults will be able to learn rural skills including willow sculpting and mammal surveying, whilst acting as a base to explore this world class area of natural and sculpted beauty.

When is a door not a door? …When its a-jar?

It’s funny how we still remember some of the old jokes our school friends and parents told us.........particularly the bad ones!

and unless when you leave your property you do lock both locks (i.e. the yale lock and the mortice lock) its contents simply will not be insured, despite the fact you have paid a premium!

A door is also not a door when it is a-jar in the security sense either, as it is designed to provide access and egress for the property’s owner(s), visitors and guests. Nowadays you don’t find many UK householders who leave their front and/or back doors unlocked at night! I do know a few who do risk leaving them open during the day, but if they were to be burgled their insurance company would not pay them anything, in the same way if an unlocked car is stolen. Nowadays, most insurance companies insist on multipoint locking for front and back doors, and sometimes require an additional deadlock,

Doors are a common cause of draughts and leaks in most homes, so fitting replacement double glazed or even triple glazed residential doors is a sure way to reduce the amount of heat your property is losing as a result of retaining old inefficient doors. Aluminium double glazed residential doors are excellent replacement doors in terms of added energy efficiency and security, however the most thermally efficient and secure doors are the top of the range composite front doors, and composite French doors that are available in the UK. The downside is that high quality double
