NEW VIRGINIA WATER PAVILION FORMALLY OPENED

The Pavilion at Virginia Water was formally opened last month, by The Crown Estate’s Chairman Sir Stuart Hampson. The Pavilion will provide much needed facilities for visitors to Virginia Water Lake, The Valley Gardens and the surrounding area of Windsor Great Park.

ased on a concept presented by Architects, Stanton Williams, the building will allow The Crown Estate to provide visitors with an enhanced kiosk-style refreshment offering providing hot and cold food throughout the year; public conveniences including baby changing facilities and it will act as a centre for visitor information and support. An external terrace will provide generous seating and offer enhanced views to Virginia Water Lake.

Chairman Sir Stuart Hampson said: “I am delighted to open this wonderful building. The provision of high quality visitor facilities is important to The Crown Estate but the design of the new Pavilion also needed to respect the Grade I listed landscape in which the building sits. The new Pavilion represents a further investment by The Crown Estate in its visitor facilities and is complementary to the awardwinning Savill Building.”

Philip Everett, Deputy Ranger, Windsor Great Park, adds: “The design brief called for a building which was practical, attractive and unobtrusive.

The architects have produced a ‘quiet’ design which fits within the landscape in an unassuming way, framing the historically important vista and providing a real sense of arrival for the estimated ¾ million visitors who enter the Great Park at Virginia Water annually.”

The external cladding of the building has made extensive use of timber to provide a further means to reduce its impact and enable it to sit comfortably within a woodland glade. The timber has been grown and harvested on the Windsor Estate where all forestry operations are FSC certified. 195 cubic metres of Douglas Fir have been used for the structure of the building, with 125 cubic metres of oak used for the cladding.

The Pavilion has been designed to be as sustainable a building as possible. With energy efficient LED lighting throughout, additional features include PV solar panel cells on the roof to generate energy, a rainwater harvesting system to reduce reliance on mains water for flushing toilets and air source heat pumps to provide background heating for the building.

The building is based on initial concepts by architects Stanton Williams and was designed and built by Hertfordshire-based Ashe Construction and their design team of Archial (architects), Solutions (structural engineers) and Stuart-McCurry Partners (electrical engineers). The project was managed by Crown Estate staff assisted

by Russ Canning and Company, HDC, Max Fordham and Webb Yates.

The build was completed with a perfect health and safety record, with not one accident or incident reported.

The new Pavilion cost £1.37 million to build. The Pavilion is open daily to visitors to Virginia Water when the car park is open 7.30am – 7.00pm in Summer, and dusk in Winter.

First damned and flooded in 1753, Virginia Water Lake was, until the creation of the great reservoirs, the largest man made body of water in the British Isles. The historic landscape includes an ornamental cascade from the 18th century, a ‘Roman Temple’ built from ruins from the ancient city of Leptis Magna in the early 19th century, and a towering 100 ft high Totem Pole.

RORY BURNS IS NAMED 2013 LV= COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP BREAKTHROUGH PLAYER

Cricket fans have voted Surrey CCC cricketer the winner of this year’s LV= County Championship Breakthrough Player Award

S

urrey County Cricket Club batsman Rory Burns is the winner of the 2013 LV= County Championship Breakthrough Player Award, following in the footsteps of Yorkshire’s Joe Root who won the award in its inaugural year last season. Launched

by County Championship title sponsors, LV=, the award is intended to recognise the most promising young talent under the age of 24 competing in the domestic competition.

Burns was one of six players shortlisted for this year’s award, as selected by a panel of judges including former England captain and current Managing Director of Partnerships at the ECB, Mike Gatting and PCA Chairman Mark Wallace.

Competition for the award came from Yorkshire’s Gary Ballance, Durham leg spinner Scott Borthwick, Leicestershire’s Shiv Thakor, Sussex batsman Luke Wells and Northamptonshire bowler David Willey.

At The Oval today, 22 year old Burns was presented with his award

by Mike Gatting. As part of his award, Burns also nominated the Tom Maynard Trust to receive a £1,000 donation from LV=, as part of their commitment to nurturing the next generation of cricketers.

Commenting on the award, Mike Gatting said: “Rory has had a great season for Surrey and is fully deserving of the LV= County

Championship Breakthrough Player of the Year Award. Competition for the award this year was strong, and it is encouraging to see thousands of county cricket fans supporting the young players coming through the County Championship. Rory has a bright future, and he should be congratulated on receiving this special award.”

Award winner Rory Burns added: “I am genuinely surprised to have won the award and it is a real honour to have been voted for by so many cricket fans. The other nominees are all players I really admire so to win the award is a huge achievement and one that I am very proud of. I have really enjoyed my first full season of first class cricket, I feel I have made some useful contributions and I am looking forward to building on my performances next season.

I would like thank Surrey for giving me the opportunity over the past twelve months to open the batting in the LV=County Championship and I must also thank all the Surrey members and supporters that voted for me.”

The tale of upmarket pawn was documented recently by Channel 4 programme, Posh Pawn. It made such fascinating viewing that Channel 4 are seriously considering making an entire series based on James original shop in Weybridge and his new venture, a second branch in affluent Richmond.

f you take a stroll down Queen’s Road (known locally as Upper Weybridge) you will find a variety of designer shops, boutiques, cafés and galleries. Incongruous as it may seem, nestling amongst them is Prestige Pawnbrokers who specialise in luxury goods including fine art, wine watches, classic cars, jewellery and of course gold. If you look closely into this select neighbourhood you will discover that many people are asset rich but in the recent recession, cash poor and that is the reason that Prestige seem to be kept busy all year round!

Prestige Pawnbrokers was the brainchild of no nonsense business man and ex property developer, James Constantinou. With an eye for a profit, James saw a gap in the market and set up Prestige in 2009. James soon discovered he was being offered a range of products that not only included the more usual items such as jewellery and watches, but also a range of more unusual items such as antiques, works of art, fine wine and even classic cars.

James’ vision has proved unstoppable He and his team now operate a growing empire that has tapped into a seemingly endless supply of wealthy customers who have been perhaps turned down elsewhere but are in need of a quick cash injection. ‘We just never know what will happen from day to day which makes it very exciting. The other day I got offered a helicopter and last week I acquired a Lamborghini. We get all sorts of stories that go with the items ranging from business start ups through to one woman who pawned jewellery to pay for a private detective to follow her straying husband!’ explains James.

‘Obviously, the story ends best for us when we can help people and they come back for their goods, but sometimes it doesn’t go that way so I always have to consult my experts before loaning any money against items I’m not sure about. I’ve had rare coins, Hermes Birkin bags, a Lichtenstein as well as some first edition books which were hugely exciting as they were signed’, smiles James.

Having cannily set up his business in leafy Weybridge, James has found he has a constant stream of affluent customers with something to pawn. Typical of his dynamic business acumen, James has now set up a new store in Richmond.

‘Richmond is a great venue for Prestige, it is very cosmopolitan, close to London and like Weybridge, it is home to a bank of celebrities, rock stars and millionaires, so I am hoping that we will soon see the same returns as our Weybridge branch but hopefully bigger diamonds, faster cars and maybe a yacht or two as well!’ smiles James.

Whether it’s a graphically iconic portrait or a meaningful song lyric, each piece is created from original vinyl records chosen to enhance the subject matter.

Love is the recurring theme in Kim’s artwork and it is with sympathetic devotion that she creates them.

In between shows the gallery promotes its constantly expanding list of key artists with an ever changing display, so there’s always something new to see.

Keith worked as a designer and director at the BBC where his work featured in some of the most influential music and arts programmes of the past 20 years. In 1993 a selection of his video work was included in an exhibition of experimental and avantgarde television design held at the ICA. His current work has been exhibited extensively in the UK and overseas and can be found in private collections in Europe, America, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Last month Keith was mentioned in the Times and evening standard when 3 of his creations were purchased for The Apple Apartments, in Baker Street, formally housing the Beatles Apple Records and boutique, now a luxury development.

Following a successful creative career in advertising, Kim Clayton-Jones applied her talents to building her own interior design company. Her natural eye for detail and sense of style made her a sought after designer and her business flourished. Having been commissioned by clients to create unique and beautiful art pieces, she has expanded her designs and now shows her work in notable galleries in London, the West Country and Cornwall.

Creepy Crockford’s Pumpkin Patch

A

s autumn approaches the cheery sight of glowing orange pumpkins at Crockford Bridge Farm means that Halloween will soon be here. The farm has been growing pumpkins for over 20 years. Paul and Caroline Smith, fifth-generation farmers who’ve lived on the farm for over 27 years, thought they would make a good “fill in” crop after the summer fruits in the Pick Your Own and before harvesting the Christmas trees in December.

Each year the pumpkin sales increase as Halloween becomes more and more popular in the UK over the half-term holiday.

If you go along to Crockford you’ll be amazed at the huge selection of small, large, and enormous unusually shaped pumpkins that the farm is renowned for. All of the pumpkins have beautifully shaped handles, which makes it easy to carve your Jack-O-Lantern for Halloween, and come in varying shades of orange (and even a few special white ones!).

The pumpkins can be purchased from the Crockford Bridge Farm Shop now, and can also be purchased at the Pumpkin Patch from the 26th of October through the 31st of October. Also, don’t forget to stock up in the farm shop, which has a dazzling array of confectionary for all the trick-or-treaters that come calling. There’s loads of spooky farm to be had over half term, including a “Grimm’s Scary Tales” performance in the woods (appropriate for ages 5 and up). The Pumpkin Patch will offer fun for all ages, with hundreds of pumpkins to choose from for carving, face painters, tasty food, a “CreepyTeepee”, and apple-bobbing. The tiniest pumpkins are called “Munchkins” and are the size of a grapefruit, while the largest “Atlantic Giant” can weigh over 50 kilos. The farm grows over 2,000 pumpkins, so there are plenty to choose from.

About 80% of the pumpkins are sold to carve, but pumpkin recipes are popular too, and can be used in a variety of pies and curries, sliced for roasting, or served in a warming bowl of delicious pumpkin soup.

Denbies ‘Vine and Dine’ Harvest Grape picking Event Denbies Wine Estate, Dorking, Surrey, with 265 acres of vines, is the largest single estate vineyard in the UK. Denbies Vine & Dine Grape picking day is the only experience of its kind in the UK and since its introduction in 2006 has attracted visitors from all over the country.

Denbies ‘Vine and Dine’ allows the public first-hand experience in the workings of the

vineyard and winery. The experience includes tuition in grape picking, harvesting the grapes, a traditional rustic vineyard workers lunch accompanied with Denbies wine, watching the picked grapes being pressed, and tasting the ‘must’ (grape juice). The day concludes with wine tasting in the Denbies cellars. All participants receive an estate grown vine to take away.

Harvest is the most significant time in the year of the vineyard. In the brief window of October the foundations are laid for the wine production of the coming year. With early reports indicating that 2013 is going to be a vintage year for both quality and quantity Denbies is anticipating a record year , which is reflected in the energy, enthusiasm and celebration that surrounds the harvest.

‘The grape picking experience really does provide a day of pure escapism, one of last year’s participants summed it up beautifully when they described it as instant therapy!’ commented one of the vineyard team.

Grape picking also contributes to some memorable achievements. This year Denbies was delighted to announce that they were awarded two gold medals and a trophy in the 2013 Decanter World Wine Award

with Andy Newbold photography. The competition welcomes photographers of all ages and abilities to capture their interpretation of harvest at Denbies Wine Estate. With spectacular views over Box Hill, the North Downs and Dorking from all aspects of the estate, the opportunities are endless. 2013 is widely anticipated to produce a vintage harvest with record yields.

This year, due to the level interest from younger visitors, Denbies is including a Special Category for under 16yrs with an emphasis on wildlife in the vineyard during harvest.

It was nearly 180 years ago, when Mark Smallpeice first set about building up a legal practice in Dorking, Surrey.

n 1854 he was joined by James Dundas Down to form Smallpeice and Down and they continued to practice together until 1860 when Mark returned to Guildford. James Down remained in Dorking and practiced on his own until joining forces with his nephew, Thomas Augustus Sommers Scott in 1883 forming Down and Scott. Just a year later Down Scott and Down was born when James’ son William, joined the firm. They quickly became a central part of the town’s business community and the name of Down Scott and Down remained for almost a century before it was changed to Downs in 1971.

Jewellery

Inspecting a piece of jewellery for the first time can be very rewarding.

There is the fine workmanship to admire, the fire of high quality gemstones and maybe a famous signature or maker’s mark.

S

ometimes there is more. A welldisguised clip, catch or slide reveals that this piece can be disassembled to allow it to be worn in a number of ways. This is known as ‘Metamorphic Jewellery’ – literally, jewellery that changes form and it a fascinating area that showcases the engineering ingenuity of the jewellery as much as the stones and metal that the piece contains.

Often the fitted box is a give-away. Nestled in the velvet next to the main jewel sits and oddly shaped pin or a bracket and some screws, all in their own compartment. So the hunt then begins for the cleverly hidden ways in which the main piece might come apart.

The concept of multi-functional jewellery

has been around a long time, and can be as simple as threading a chain through the back of a brooch to wear it as a necklace. The more complex, elaborate pieces became popular in the Victorian era. The newly wealthy mercantile classes did not have the range of family jewels available to the nobility and so metamorphic jewellery allowed them to get more out of the pieces that they had turning a tiara into a necklace and earrings or a necklace into a bracelet and brooch.

The Art Deco period saw this trend increased. Stiff formality was on the wane and jewellery became more adaptable and ultimately more wearable. The famous Parisian jewellery houses of Cartier, Chaumet and Van Cleef

& Arpels all created metamorphic suites allowing imposing tiaras or necklaces to break down into smaller components. In 1939 Van Cleef & Arpels patented one of the most flexible and versatile pieces ever – their ‘Passe-Partout’ or ‘go anywhere’, This was a length of gold tubogas with two flower clips and a clever rail system that allowed the jewel to be worn as a bracelet, choker, necklace, sautoir, or belt and the clips as brooches or earrings.

Spring/Summer 2014 Collections

A world of celebrities and famous people, beautiful and expensive clothes and general fashion glitz

ondon Fashion Week (LFW) is one of the highest profile fashion events in the world and one of the ‘big four’ international catwalk influencers. LFW puts London and British Fashion firmly on the global stage, generating orders in the region of £100m;

the event itself contributes £20 million to the London economy in terms of direct spend and attracts visitors from over 25 countries including US, France, Italy, Russia, Middle East, China and UAE. London Fashion Week is always exciting and inspirational, and last month’s event proved to be just that.

London Fashion Week presented another unrivalled opportunity for both established designers and newcomers to present their latest collections. A constantly buzzing key event for those who haven’t got the patience to wait until the latest fashion designs and stylish fashion trends make it into the fashion magazines. 62 catwalk shows and 20 presentations took place across the 5 days.

The magic of London Fashion Week is not merely thanks to the fashion designers’ and fashion stylists’ cutting-edge collections but the media excitement that accompanies them. The allure of the show is O C TO B E R 2 0 1 3 3 5

exceptional and London Fashion Week continues to be the top fashion event pulling visitors from every corner of the globe, with international press attending from 42 countries.

It’s a week where designers are free to create at will and experiment with new trends for clothing. The world watches as fashion history is made. While we are all thinking about our Winter wardrobes, designers were showcasing next year’s Spring/Summer Collections during last month’s London Fashion Week.

London Fashion Week was a roaring success.

This season saw big-name guests like Anna Wintour, Kate Moss and Harry Styles dominate the front rows. Top designers – including Paul Smith, Vivienne Westwood and Manolo Blahnik – showcased their designs and newer names, including Fashion East’s rising stars Ashley Williams, Claire Barrow and Ryan Lo made their mark with punchy, memorable shows.

London Fashion Week is a dazzling showcase of great British talent,” said Mayor of London Boris Johnson. “Its significance has been growing over the last few years, with strong attendance by press and buyers from around the world. You’d have been forgiven for thinking you’d stepped into the Autumn/Winter shows as London Fashion Week took over the capital once more; dark palettes, heavy-duty fabrics, longer cuts and geometric prints for spring and summer replaced the usual suspects of saccharine brights, ethereal materials, barelythere lengths and all-out florals. Though some requisite summer touches - think lace, think florals, think sunny hues - did break through, the spring/summer catwalks held onto a decidedly, well, wintery feel.

A subversive undercurrent ran through collections at Tom Ford, Simone Rocha and Giles with rips, zips and moody concoctions of black, grey and browns. Even the king of summer, Christopher Kane, turned the dial on his collection, offering florals with a sociopolitical undertone (diagrams on flowers were used to highlight the inadequacies of sex education). And the anarchical theme continued as traditionally autumnal boxy tops, sheeny metallics, brocade and leather made unapologetic appearances . Though prints were out in force, 2013’s flowers and heady neon splices made way for geometric touches, spots, lines and checks.

But it wasn’t all dark and stormy; a hint

of summer came in the form of gorgeous cheeriness at Roksanda Ilincic and Tata Naka: a palette of sunny brights alongside playful patterns provided a welcome respite from the autumnal feel of the shows. Yellow, a key colour for the season, also warmed up the L’Wren Scott and Thomas Tait collections.

BORA AKSU London Fashion Week opened with brilliant brights from Bora Aksu to bring some colour to a dreary London day. There were dolllike dresses, made from a patchwork of fabrics and patterns in yellow and blue. The high collars and cinched-in waists adding to the dainty vibe of the collection.Blue paisley patterns were dotted throughout, on playsuits, edging white blazers and decorating the hem-lines of circle skirts, and lace and sheer materials were the fabric of choice. A colourful start to LFW!

THE COLLECTION ENGLISH ROSE Fabrics: English lace, macramé lace, lofty Scottish cashmere, soft sculptural cashmere, rubber, cotton, raw silk, felted Merino wool, soft suede. Colours: Rose pink, lavender. dusky mauve, mint, trench, white, crystal,pale yellow, sage green, berry red, grape, grey mélange, black Silhouettes: Cardigan outerwear, wrap coats, soft Chesterfields, knotdresses, pencil skirts, lofty knits. Accessories: The Petal bag; petal-shaped sunglasses, gem belts, rubber flower belts, iPhone cases, rubber strap shoe, The Britain – Gem Edition Burberry, which is headquartered in London, was founded in 1856.

MOSCHINI Moschino’s bringing back punk, with graffitistyle graphics and animal print ruling their

runway. Rosella Jardini, the creative director for Moschino, brought new meaning to the word punk. Her use of texture and graphics created a neo-punk trend that’s here to stay.

She a fl wlessly combined glamour and risk with wearability, without ever losing the edge that makes Moschino such a fashion forward brand. The models were laden with either black lipstick or just enough black eye shadow to make you believe that they actually listen to the Sex Pistols and secretly identify with an alternative punk subculture. Alas, Jardini’s touch of refinement and femininity managed to maintain an ambience of high fashion and elegance that is ever present throughout London Fashion Week.

JASPER CONRAN For their Spring/Summer 2014 Collection, Jasper Conran bring a starched collar which embodies the clean-lined approach. Pure white and navy injected with solid statements of lemon, streamlined – in form, colour and pattern. Trompe l’oeil beadwork over sheer layers, mixed with fine guage striped silk knits, hand-blocked prints and full skirts. A softening of attitude. Dahlia lace, applique blooms and wirework leaves in textural white, dressed-up for day in cotton pique and pristine linen Fondant coloured prints on the lightest organza –simply pretty! Holiday tones of pink grapefruit, sunny yellow, grass green and sea blue. Cotton dressing – the bandeau, a tailored short, a simple sundress. Bold graphic prints always set against cooling white.

TEMPERLEY LONDON Perhaps the polar opposite to Moschino’s show, Temperley London was all about the romance.

With beautiful fabrics, o fl ral embellishment and decorative pieces, Alice Temperley served up a dish of British elegance at its n fi est, with a fl ttering silhouettes and a delicateness that’s not often seen at runway shows anymore. Although Temperley’s collection brought London back to the classic elegance associated with the city.

Playing with texture and print, the collection took o fl ral that may have otherwise been mistaken as your grandmother’s curtains and transformed it into a collection perfectly tfi for an English tea party.

PRINGLE OF SCOTLAND Pringle of Scotland is the iconic brand founded in 1815 at the birthplace of the Scottish knitwear industry. Their spring/ summer 2014 womenswear collection embraces contrasting influences to create unexpected juxtapositions; graphic panels are offset with elliptical seams, structural couture fabrics are paired with relaxed knitted elements, and sharp silhouettes are gathered to create volume. The brand’s iconic argyle diamonds are used as a thematic thread that evolves throughout the collection, rooting the designs in the brand’s heritage but offering fresh treatments and techniques to transformative effect. Intarsia twinsets feature diamonds entwined together to resemble the mesh of fencing, whilst woven jacquards in porcelain blue and white present diamonds with varying placements and scales and knitted jacquards showcase fragmented argyles that are overlaid with hand beading for textural detail. this tactile interpretation is further developed through a raised argyle knitted sleeveless sweater with hand knit trim. the geometric grid patterns intrinsic to argyle are then realised through a fine lace stitch knit, which is then replicated through macramé that ranges in scale from delicate panels on skirts and bomber jackets, to a more structured oversized macramé

t-shirt and skirt. the open weave of macramé provides inspiration for an open slash stitch knit dress in electric blue worn as a twinset with matching cardigan, and a knitted silk dress combines macramé and pointelle across exaggerated fully fashioned seams. a game of opposites is explored through the combination of textures used on one garment; couture silk sits with knitted jersey and macramé on a bomber jacket and skirt. this opposition can also be seen in the use of exaggerated contrast colours and trims; an off white leather vest with knitted back is enlivened with bright geranium leather sides, and an electric blue/ navy bomber features contrasting white leather piping. the use of these contradictory colours and materials makes for a collection that is both tough and feminine, pairing the ease and flow of knitwear with the structure and formality of couture fabrics. BURBERRY PRORSUM Burberry Prorsum showed its womenswear Spring/Summer 2014 collection, ‘English Rose’, in London’s Hyde Park. Guests included Sienna Miller, Harry Styles, Paloma Faith, Alexa Chung, Poppy Delevingne and Donna Air. The show was also a celebration of Burberry Beauty, as the first womenswear show since the brand brought the category in house. The Spring/Summer 2014 makeup look and next season’s Burberry Nails collection were unveiled: six nail colours, launching in January 2014.

PAUL SMITH The Paul Smith collection was mainly based on roomy, semi-seventies shapes with the brand’s signature men’s tailoring. Easygoing colours like cornflower blue, black, white and buttercup sent a message of ‘chillout -and-have fun’. A particular favourite was an easy-to-style button-down peach dress in lightweight fabric with sensual drapes – it was a dress that stood out all on its own, no accessories needed.

MULBERRY Emma Hill certainly pulled out all the stops for her final show as creative director of Mulberry in the Spring 2014 collection shown at London

Fashion Week. The collection varied in prints, textures, shapes and colour, and was beautiful through and through. From sixties inspired prints to sporty silhouettes and all-white ensembles there was nothing that wasn’t executed perfectly. We also saw bold prints on minimalist shapes, a hint of sheer coming through on a broad stripe and leather worn on leather. The show was also the debut of the new Mulberry handbag, the Kensal. With all this in mind, the Mulberry show was everything a girl could wish for in a final farewell.

ASHISH Sequins galore! What else would you expect from an Ashish show? They were everywhere,

from jeans to bags. As well as sequins, we saw the Coca Cola logo cropping up over and over again, on tees trown over ripped sequin trousers, for a totally glam-grunge look that seemed thrown together in the coolest of ways. We loved the rainbow sequined trousers and the zebra and leopard print dress, and the best thing about the show was the DIY feel to all of it. Pass the sequins please!

MATTHEW WILLIAMSON Matthew Williamson’s show teetered between business and boho, there was sharp tailoring which contrasted with billowing floral maxi dresses. The style was distinctly grown up, and the prints were hand-painted rather than computer generated, and we love the orange and pink floral jumpsuit! The day-wear was sharp and chic, with tailored trousers and midi-length floral dresses going strong, and the evening dresses took us back to classic Matthew Williamson style, chiffon gowns in floral and dragonfly prints.

HOUSE OF HOLLAND House of Holland is a show everyone looks forward to – and it didn’t disappoint! Girly dresses were toughened up with caps and huge sunnies for a dash of London edge.

Print-wise, gingham prevailed, in contrasting blues and reds, they stole the show and made a bold, bright statement – what more would you expect from Henry? The feminine dresses were mixed up with amazing printed trousers and graphic tees for a more casual look – they’re already on our wishlist for next season!

CHRISTOPHER KANE Florals? For spring?

Groundbreaking’… Despite Miranda Priestly’s quip in The Devil Wear’s Prada, to the gifted mind of Christopher Kane there are in fact ways to make spring florals groundbreaking. Kane took various

VIVIENNE WESTWOOD RED LABEL Vivienne Westwood always puts on a show at London Fashion Week. Her S/S14 collection opened with Lily Cole, dressed in a floorlength gown and wildhaired, performing a dance based on the fairy tale “The Red Shoes”. After the performance, came the clothes, and Westwood showed us her trademark draped tailoring, on structured coats and jackets – Spring still calls for outwear with London weather!

The artistic, floral print, smudged on dresses and jumpsuits that

were tied at the knees with scarves, and the paint-like elements seeped into the beauty look - each model walked out with white make up painted over their faces and legs – described by Vivienne as “like an animal trapped in the headlights”.

JOHN ROCHA For Spring Summer 2014 John Rocha weaves a narrative of grace and femininity, a tale of contemporary elegance and hard-edged romance.The palette, grounded in broken whites and ivories and all the textures of black, brings surprises with shots of scarlet and fuchsia and blossoms of lemon, violet, emerald and indigo. The silhouette moves through beautifully structured volumes that are at once pure and sharply sweet, to slim extended lines that skim the form and a linear silhouette that drapes to suggest a darker sophistication.

Throughout the collection John’s abiding love of texture and

embellishment is focused in densely worked surfaces, each piece creating an individual expression. Silk organza is scattered with couched georgette and yarn blossoms, or hand sculpted petals and blooms. Sheer georgette is satin stitched in trellises that trace the form, or flounced in raw edged layers and countered with glazed and lacquered laces. Extraordinary forms are intricately crafted from twists and loops of organza piping. Yet, there is a seeming weightlessness throughout, a lightness that informs the collection. As always with John’s work there is a duality, a counterbalance between the tender and the strong the tough and the romantic.

We can now look forward to the trends that will be hitting the high streets for Spring/ Summer 2014, and re-create the look on the catwalk!

Tried & tested Jeremy Gates hops aboard the trend train for a razor-sharp wet shave: Shaving at home can seem a dull, daily chore, but there’s something decadently indulgent about treating yourself to a professional wet shave. I book myself in for one with demon barber Omar Houdaifa.

As my chair eased back, soft chords of mildly mystic music playing in the background, Omar explained the process. He took his time to work pre-shave oil (rich in borage and sesame oils) into the skin - lots in my case, as electric shaving has apparently left my skin as dry as a desert! Next, my face was wrapped in a hot towel oozing fragrant aromas for five soothing minutes to open the pores. Shaving cream (babassu oil and manuka honey) was then applied to soften my beard and protect the skin. The first sweep of the blade, following the direction of the growth of the stubble, felt like a bit of a raw sandpapering at times, but Omar took such great care that I never actually expected to lose blood. After another sloshing of shaving cream, the second sweep - this time sideways in direction - was super-smooth. Omar daintily completed the job with dabs of his blade here and there, to mop up any remaining stubborn bristles. When I felt the amazing smoothness of the finished job, I almost danced out of the door afterwards. Autumn.

End of the growing season or just the start!

Now that autumn is upon us, it is essential that we do not miss the opportunity to get the garden ready for winter and more importantly, put the building blocks in place for, a new spring.

J

obs that need to be carried out this month include applying a good quality autumn lawn feed, such as Scotts Lawn Builder, which also includes a moss killer that will help remove moss which can in damp winters lead to suffocation of the grass, causing bare patches to emerge in the spring. Once applied the moss will die and go black over the following weeks.

It is essential that this is raked out, using a spring tined rake, to stop new moss establishing within the debris of the moss and thatch. If bare patches appear after this scarification of the lawn, repairs need to be carried out promptly to avoid weeds invading. The use of a quality lawn seed such as Barenbrug SOS lawn seed will quickly repair these patches.

An additional problem people experience at this time of year is a proliferation of worm casts on lawns. These do not cause lasting damage and some gardeners are happy to disperse the casts using a stiff broom. It must be stressed that the presence of worms not only shows that the soil below the lawn is healthy but also essential, they introduce air into the soil and mix the layers of soil and organic material. There is a product on the market called CastClear which does not harm the worms but when applied regularly it suppresses the activity of the worms in the upper layers of the soil, reducing worm casts. The main active ingredient is sulphur a chemical commonly present around us.

Other problems that lawns can suffer from during the autumn are fungal problems

including leaf rust and red thread, these are caused by the damp conditions regularly experienced in the autumn and a build-up of thatch. Removal of the thatch by raking and treatment of the lawn with Bayer Lawn Disease Control will enable control of these. In addition the use of low nitrogen fertiliser such as autumn lawn treatment will strengthen the grass and make it more resistant to disease and the winter cold.

Autumn is an ideal time for adding structure to the garden. I have mentioned many times before in previous articles that Autumn is nature’s time for planting and strongly advise that if you are intending to plant trees, shrubs and hedging, that now is the right time to do this. Planting large plants at this time will allow the plants to establish themselves

by producing a strong root system, long before they are put under stress by the warmer weather experienced in the spring and summer. To give them an even better start in life putting Rootgrow mycorrhizal fungi into the planting hole will speed up the establishment further, the fungi creating a secondary root system which they use to bring nutrients and water to the newly planted specimens, in return for a little food from the plant.

Now is also a good time for revitalising old and overgrown plants. To do this judicious pruning needs to be carried out. I haven’t space here to go into detail for all plants, as the subject is complex. Where plants are outgrowing their space, by growing over

paths, buildings or other prized plants, it is essential to carry out this work sooner rather than later. Plants that need revitalising can also be pruned, however that this can affect flowering or fruiting. If this is an issue to you selective pruning, by the removal of some old stems leaving approximately half, will minimise the problem. With pruning using the correct pruning tools is essential to get the best from your work; this reduces unintended damage and the risk of infection.

Most secateurs are what is known as bypass secateurs, ie like scissors, these are best used for softer material where it provides a clean accurate cut, eg Felco secateurs. For hard woods I always advise the use of anvil secateurs, where the blade comes down against the anvil allowing more pressure to

be exerted. Traditionally these were produced by a company called Rolcut, however these subsequently disappeared from the market.

I was lucky recently to come across a new supplier, who it turns out patented the original anvil secateurs, a German company called Lowe Professional, these tools are professional quality and provided excellent results. In addition to choosing the correct type of cut it is also vital that you use tools with the correct capacity, branches bigger than 10cm diameter are usually best cut using the relevant type of lopper, for an easier and more accurate cut.

The pitfalls of the new temporary planning laws for homeowners and neighbours

O

n 30th May 2013 the Government brought new temporary planning laws into force until 30th May 2016 to try and help boost the economy by making it easier for homeowners in England to build single storey extensions and conservatories. Under already existing planning laws, where a property’s permitted development rights have not been withdrawn by local authorities and remain intact, most semi-detached property owners can build a single storey extension or conservatory up to a maximum of 3 metres from the rear of their property (up to a maximum of 4 metres on detached homes).

Under the new temporary Permitted Development rules, homeowners can submit plans to their local authority for double sized single storey extensions or conservatories (i.e. with a maximum projection of 6 metres and 8 metres respectively). The local authority will in due course send these proposed development plans to all

adjoining properties, giving them 21 days from the date of issue to submit representations and objections to their local planning authority. If an objection is received, the local planning officers may require the homeowner wanting to carry out the development to submit a full planning application. If this is the case, there is no guarantee planning will be approved, as will be dealt with under existing planning law.

Whilst some homeowners may get excited about building out further than is normally permitted, there is no guarantee that a) none of the adjoining owners will object, and/or b) their local planning authority may refuse permission on existing planning grounds. One vital thing to remember is that all “new rules� only relate to planning and not Building Regulations which are unchanged, so will need to be applied for in the case of a normal brick built extension or if homeowners are

removing existing doors between the existing premises and extension (or conservatory), or if the new structure is over 30 square metres, or not primarily double glazed throughout etc.

The Town and County Planning, England, Statutory Instrument 2013 No.1101 “allowing” general permitted development within a 3 year window came into force on 30th May 2013, and is only valid if the development is “completed on or before 30th May 2016”. However, some local councils have sought and obtained an exception (i.e. many of whom are in London), so homeowners in these areas remain under existing restrictions with regards development of their properties. It is also worth noting that most new housing developments built in recent years have already had any Permitted Development rights withdrawn, so will probably require planning consent to be obtained before any extension to the property can be built (local planning authorities views and/or interpretations can vary).

Far from simplifying the process, the temporary extra permitted development could cause the whole system could go into melt down if thousands of homeowners decide to submit plans to local authorities, as they will not have the funding or resources to cope.

In addition, the process could end up being even more protracted if after weeks of “consultation” the local planning officers decide a formal planning application is required.

For English homeowners wanting to add a modern double glazed conservatory or orangery to their home, without the hassle of the new consultation process or Building Regulatory Approval, the best way to do this is to ensure that the design does not require Building Regs and can be built under existing Permitted Development i.e. which usually allows around 3 metre to 4 metre projections (these limits can vary from one local authority another) from the rear of homes where Permitted Development rights remain intact. The other way homeowners can avoid a long drawn out process to build a larger conservatory or orangery the way they actually want it, is to employ a professional double glazing company to submit a full planning application on their behalf that stands every chance of being approved because its site and proportions have been designed in such a way as to comply with existing planning laws, and which should take into account the proximity of all adjoining properties.

The temporary Permitted Development rules are the same as the existing rules in one respect in that neither permit the commencement of any building until the statutory application process has been followed to the letter, which in the case of the temporary rules includes the submission of detailed plans to the local planning authority in question, along with all dimensions, the

addresses of all adjoining properties and “a written description of the proposed development”.

In summary, the temporary relaxation of Permitted Development rights may sound great in principle, but could all end in tears. By being prepared to limit any extension, conservatory or orangery to the pre-existing Permitted Development limits, one can avoid the uncertainty of planning, the unknown and lengthy new consultation process and get straight on with building as long as Building Regulations are not required.

Island Life

With the ever increasing thirst for open plan living, kitchens have long ago ceased to be just a place to store and prepare food. They now frequently occupy a space within the main social living area of the house where family and friends congregate.

T

he main impact this evolution of living space has had on kitchen design is the island. As the kitchen is now within the living space and not tucked away in a separate room off the hall, the users of the kitchen would prefer not to work on outside walls with their backs to their family and friends. So the island enables the kitchen to integrate fully into the living area, frequently with seating around it on one level or another.

Clearly every household has different requirements for their island design (in fact people within a household often have different requirements!). The kitchen design process can often involve very many permutations of an island before it is finally signed off and there are many questions for the family to answer during this stage.

Does the main cook spend more time at the hob or the sink – if the former then should the hob be on the island? Is a small sink required for washing vegetables and

washing hands during food preparation. Is a breakfast bar required and if so, for how many?

How much worktop preparation space is the main cook used to? Can this be achieved within the space available. Will people be able to walk around the island if the dishwasher is open?

Even the fine detail needs to be considered. For example if you want to be able to read the paper whilst eating breakfast at the bar, then a raised glass breakfast bar may not be suitable as it may not be deep enough to accommodate the breakfast and the paper! Other factors such as the location of a television need to be considered if the family wish to see the TV from the breakfast bar.

At the end of the day, a prime function of a kitchen is to store food and kitchen apparatus so of course the kitchen design, and therefore the island, needs to provide for sufficient storage. Before signing off on a kitchen design, the client should always map each cupboard’s contents from the existing kitchen, into the cabinets in the new design.
