A history of L BOTANIC THE ROYA GARDENS, KEW

J

ulius Caesar is thought to have crossed the Thames at Kew in 53 BCE on his first visit to Britain, The first reference to a settlement was in 1313 and by 1483 the hamlet of Kew was of taxable size. In the 16th century, Henry VII built a Palace in the royal hunting park at Richmond, moving his court there for the summer months and changing people’s perceptions of the area. The presence of the court drew nobles and influential courtiers to the area, and the nearby village of Kew grew rapidly over the next 100 years. By the 17th century Kew’s place as a hub of power and political intrigue was firmly established. For London, the early 18th Century was a time for blossoming culture, with writers, artists and musicians being drawn to the capital for access to aristocratic patronage and a growing commercial market. Some of the aristocracy moved out of the teeming city, and Kew became a popular enclave. The Royal Family used Kew Palace, as their summer residence. Prince Frederick and Princess Augusta, parents of the future George III, started a garden around Kew Palace, adjacent to the Royal Park. t 2B0E1 1R 2 0 1 1 2 610 S a E uPgTuEsM

In 1759 William Aiton was recruited from Chelsea Physic Garden to manage the small “Physick Garden” at Kew. This garden grew in size, absorbing in stages land from the Park, and became a place for the Royal Family and a succession of gifted gardeners and scientists to experiment with plants and garden landscaping. From 1820 to 1841, the Treasury’s economies and lack of royal interest and the increased competition from other horticultural establishments brought about the decline of the Botanic Gardens. Kew was left adrift while other royal gardens were redesigned. From 1842 saw the renaissance of Kew. The famous Victorian glasshouses, the Palm House and the Temperate House were built; the new Arboretum was laid out and the Herbarium collection was founded. Scientific research expanded and Kew became essential to the developing Empire, supplying seed, crops, personnel and horticultural advice to the colonies. Under Queen Victoria’s patronage the Gardens flourished and with the arrival of the railway in 1869 Kew’s role as a public attraction also grew. From 1885 to 1941 significant expansion of the scientific

collections took place. Despite this the two world wars brought change and disruption to the Gardens. With men conscripted into the army the number of women gardeners increased and ‘Dig for Victory’ vegetable plots were planted on many of the historic lawns. Post-war Britain saw hardship, rationing and a degree of privation. Initially Kew relied on grants and gifts for capital projects. As time passed, funds became available for major restorations as well as some new works. A welcome expansion came in 1965 with the lease and management of Wakehurst Place in Sussex, Kew’s sister estate in the country. Kew has increasingly taken a leading role in action on habitat and biodiversity conservation worldwide. In July 2003 Kew Gardens was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 2009 The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew marked its 250th anniversary, with highlights of the year including a visit from HRH Queen Elizabeth II. The Gardens now welcome over 1.35 million visitors a year.

T

he Goodwood Revival really is a magical step back in time, a unique chance to revel in the glamour and allure of motor racing in the romantic time capsule of the golden era of motor racing at one of the world’s most authentic circuits. The Revival is the world’s most popular historic motor race meeting and the only event of its kind to be staged entirely in the nostalgic time capsule of the 1940s, 50s and 60s that relives the glory days of Goodwood Motor Circuit. It is the biggest and best historic motor racing party of the year. The Revival offers visitors the opportunity to leave the ‘modern world’ behind and join motor sport luminaries including Sir Stirling Moss, UP LYT2E0M 11B E R 2 0 1 1 3 22 SJ E

Richard Attwood, John Surtees and Derek Bell in an unabashed celebration of flat-out wheel-to-wheel racing around a classic racetrack, untouched by the modern world. The Revival is far more than a series of races for historic cars. It’s a magical step back in time and a chance for visitors to revel in the romance and theatre of motor racing as it used to be. The lovingly restored circuit is unchanged from its heyday, and great lengths are taken to ensure that everything on the site is exactly as it was. This means that the majority of visitors wear appropriate

period clothing and no modern vehicles are allowed within the circuit perimeter throughout the weekend. There are also theatrical sets that bring the past back to life and a celebration of aviation heritage with some stunning aerial manoeuvres throughout the skies above this WWII former aerodrome. TEACHING PRINCIPLES & VALUES IN AN EVER CHALLENGING WORLD Woldingham School is a school with history, founded in 1842 by the Society of the Sacred Heart, with a legacy of Sacred Heart principles and values. These values focus on educating girls to respect themselves and others, on a sense of community and social awareness and on the importance of the Christian faith to personal growth. Woldingham School holds in trust the Society’s mission of education, and is committed to living these values.

aware of the world they live in.

We accept applications from girls of all faiths. We believe in educating girls considering good, Christian values whilst equipping them to face an ever-challenging world, prepared, enthusiastic and willing. Prepared – to face all number of obstacles assertively and without fear; enthusiastic – to play their part; willing – to make a difference, and

The School is set in an impressive 700-acre estate within the Surrey Downs, close to the M25 and with its own train station providing a 35-minute connection to central London. Gatwick and Heathrow Airports are 20 and 45 minutes away respectively and junction 6 on the M25 is only seven minutes’ drive from the School.

There is no typical ‘Woldingham girl’. We recruit for diversity, and thrive on the fusion of cultures and backgrounds that enable the School to flourish. The School is the thread that connects these vibrant, committed and thoughtful girls. We offer an environment to enable any girl, who is willing to become an active part of the Woldingham community, to shine.

We are proud of our academic achievements. A-level and GCSE results are well above average. This year 83% of all grades at A level were A*, A and B with 57% at A* and A. Twenty girls achieved three A grades or more. At GCSE, 70% of all grades achieved were A* and A. The School counters the trend in uptake of science, economics and mathematics, and girls also achieve outstanding results in humanities and languages. Most importantly, we have created an educational structure to support the ‘Gifted and Talented’ by offering adequate support to both the ‘academic’ and the ‘talented but not necessarily academic’ child.

girls within the 11–18 age range, over 300 of whom are boarders. We offer full boarding, but girls may leave school after Saturday morning extra-curricular activities and return to school on Monday morning, if they so wish. Almost half of the boarders choose to stay at the School throughout term time, leaving only during the holiday periods. This ensures a vibrant and busy boarding community throughout the academic year. This, coupled with a residential community of over 40 staff living within the School grounds, ensures that Woldingham School provides a stable and caring atmosphere for all girls.

Time and again parents make reference to the support systems in place that ensure their girls are nurtured and encouraged. The School accommodates over 500

Set in the leafy suburbs of Guildford, Lanesborough Preparatory School prides itself on providing an academic, all-round education for boys aged 3 to 13. Whilst acknowledging that academic success is an important and continuing goal, Head of Lanesborough, Clare Turnbull, stresses the importance of inspiring the boys with a wide spectrum of interests.

“My dream is that the boys leave Lanesborough academically strong but with well-rounded interests,” she says. “The scope for discovery and learning new skills is very strong here. We genuinely try to give the boys at least a flavour of a wide range of interests and if it sparks something within them, we are equipped to develop that interest further. I want them to go out into the world having had a taste of a full range of activities, whether that be in sport, music, art or any other opportunities.” Lanesborough’s recent ISI Inspection stated that: ‘The pupils’ personal development is outstandingly well developed and fostered by the school’s positive ethos. Their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is excellent, and relationships between pupils and teachers, and between themselves are excellent.’ This year’s annual Activities Week was testimony to the school’s ethos. In July, every year group participated in a diverse range of activities. Favourites included Kip on a Ship, Bushcraft survival and a trip to a roman villa. With members of staff getting actively involved, this energetic week of fun and personal challenges was the culmination of yet another successful school year for Lanesborough. This ongoing encouragement of ‘exploration and discovery’ peaks now and then with other events fully endorsed by Clare. Her own zest for life and great humour shines through at events such as Book Week - this year she carried out her duties in full dragon gear and encouraged staff to dress up as book characters. 4 SEPTEMBER2011

Entering into the spirit was Deputy Head, Dr Toby Griffiths, dressed as a wolf and adding a touch of realism to the smaller boys’ weekly story session. Lanesborough values its links with Guildford and a small, but important, percentage of its boys are choristers for Guildford Cathedral, strengthening links with the Cathedral and the town’s community and further illustrating the importance of music and the arts at the school.

INSPIRATION & ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AT LANESBOROUGH PREPARATORY SCHOOL words Tinx Newton

Clare admits that the sound of music within the school is a perk of her job:

“Every morning the Cathedral Choristers practise in the room above my study - the delight of hearing the boys sing really puts a spring in my step and gears me up for the day ahead.” Academic achievement is also celebrated and apparent at Lanesborough. The ISI’s recent inspection of Lanesborough ( January 2011) declared,

‘Pupil achievement is outstanding’ Lanesborough boys regularly achieve top scholarships to esteemed senior schools. Most boys are successful in gaining places at the senior school of their choice, including the Royal Grammar School in Guildford, and in 2010, 15 boys gained scholarships to 9 schools. The strengths of an all-boys prep school are continually proven by Lanesborough and Clare Turnbull is steadfast in her reasons to keep the school single sex. She explains,

“In single sex schools boys can do everything. They make brilliant poets, musicians, artists, historians etc. Their demands are very different to girls and we can allow them the time and space to develop at their own pace within their own interests. At Lanesborough we feel that is an enviable and indeed, enjoyable position to be in.”

WHY IT’S A BOYS WORLD AT PARKSIDE

or many parents, choosing a single sex school for their child can be attributed to instinct. Some fear their boy will be left behind by more academically mature girls or that he will coast in their shadows. Yet more believe that the empathetic, collaborative teaching style to which girls respond so well does not provide the stimulation and challenge their son needs. We all know girls and boys mature at different rates and respond to different teaching styles. That’s why at Parkside teaching has been developed over many years to suit the needs of young boys. The staff choose applications which are relevant to boys’ lives and incorporate many journeys of exploration and adventure into their learning. ALDRO Bringing out the best in boys

Aldro is a small, family run day and boarding school for 220 boys aged 7-13. It is set in 35 acres of stunning, secluded Surrey countryside. How many other schools offer a lake with an island which can only be reached by rowing boat or an Indiana Jones style rope bridge? “Bringing out the best in boys” is our forte. We offer an outstanding education which combines academic excellence with a breadth of opportunities outside the classroom. Our scholarship boards speak for themselves – boys go on to all the top public senior schools. However equally valued are the boys achievements in other areas such as sport, music, chess, art and drama. We give our boys the chance to do all the activities that boys really

12 SEPTEMBER2011

enjoy but which, sadly, so few have the chance to partake in these days: den-making in the woods, shooting, fishing, rowing, cubs, scouts, gardening and model railway.

We believe in preserving the childhood of our boys in an age when modern society squeezes it out of children far too quickly... One significant advantage of providing an all-boy environment up to the age of 13 is that no activities are regarded as ‘un-cool’ for boys – in fact cooking is one

of our most popular activities. We have three choirs, 181 instrumental lessons a week with 9 instrumental groups including Jazz and Blues Bands. The boys take LAMDA exams and visitors from co-ed backgrounds comment on the exceptional quality of our art and our boys’ enthusiasm for reading – boys who achieve the top reading award have a special certificate named after them. We believe in preserving the childhood of our boys in an age when modern society squeezes it out of children far too quickly. Even our older boys still happily hunt for conkers in the autumn and a trophy is awarded to the school conker champion. Our boarders enjoy ‘Escape from Colditz’, played in

the dark by torchlight. Boys at Aldro develop the ability to take the initiative with their work – whether boarders or day boys they complete their prep at school and this is an invaluable study skill for the future. Aldro has an outstanding record of success with winning scholarships and last year our boys won no less than 15 scholarships to their senior schools. Bringing out the best in your son is Aldro’s goal, it is the reason we are here, to prepare boys for the rest of their lives.

Choosing the right school for our children is paramount, if they are to realise their true potential as an individual and Bloo House, a co-educational school for 5 – 11 year olds offers the personal touch often lacking in other schools.

school for my son, making his transition very easy – he’s flourishing at his new school”. Children who have graduated from Bloo House have been offered places at some of the country’s top independent schools including, Eagle House, The Royal Grammar School, Hampton Boys, Sir William Perkins, and Surbiton High.

A new generation of school for the modern child, Bloo House pupils undergo a very different experience compared to most other schools - an experience driven by academic excellence, well-being, and happiness. On first entering the school, visitors are greeted by an entrance and décor that almost makes them feel at home. A painting of Gustav Klimt’s “Mother and Child” hangs above the fireplace and together with canvas works located around the school of other inspiring and famous individuals, this makes one realise that this is a very special place. The school is known for offering unrivalled education, with high levels of individual attention being central to the school’s aims of nurturing intuitive and enquiring minds. Their holistic approach enables children to develop emotionally, academically, physically, and spiritually.

“Children who have graduated from Bloo House have been offered places at some of the country’s top independent schools.” The transition process from Bloo House to secondary school is seamless, with the school preparing pupils up to 18 months beforehand and an emphasis on choosing a school that recognises each pupil’s potential as well as one that suits the child’s personality. Margaret Brown, a mother who had both of her children at the school, with one recently graduating and moving into secondary school commented, “Bloo House were absolutely superb in the process of choosing the right 14 SEPTEMBER2011

Children who have graduated from Bloo House have been offered places at some of the country’s top independent schools...

One of the first independent primary schools in Britain to adopt such an original approach, the Bloo House ethos of developing the whole child extends throughout their curriculum from the teaching of core subjects with the aid of Apple iPads to more nontraditional subjects such as psychology and philosophy. In addition, the curriculum also includes Spanish, French, and Latin in the weekly timetable. Their sports programme, centred on exercising the inner and outer body is particularly inventive, offering children professional fitness coaching, golf, martial arts and yoga. So, it would appear that Bloo House is paving the way in primary education. As well as heads of academic institutions, the school has also caught the attention of the national media, which has described the school as “groundbreaking” and one that offers a truly refreshing approach to education. And the fact that they have a 100% success rate in pupils being offered places and scholarships at a number of the UK’s top secondary schools is an obvious testament to their unique approach.

WALKING THE WEY NAVIGATION

PYRFORD LOCK TO WALSHAM GATES words Rachael Talibart

The Wey Navigation runs for twenty miles from Weybridge to Godalming through some of Surrey’s most beautiful countryside. With eight pubs along the route and numerous points of historical interest, the Navigation is one of Surrey’s most rewarding leisure resources.

and Pyrford golf course to the West. Both sides of the Navigation here are bounded by trees, creating a feeling of being secluded from the rush of modern Surrey life. The M25, that ran so close to the Navigation at New Haw and Byfleet, is now well out of earshot.

This month’s stroll along the Navigation towpath picks up where last month’s finished, at Pyrford Bridge. On the other side of the bridge from the Anchor Inn lies Pyrford Lock. From here the Navigation continues south for about half a mile running past Wisley Golf course to the East (for a review of this world class course, visit www.top100golfcourses.co.uk)

As the Navigation starts to turn to the South West, there is a small brick bridge known as Pigeon House Bridge. Although the origin of the name is uncertain, it is possible that it related to Pyrford Place, a manor house built nearby in the late 16th century, when it was fashionable to have dovecotes which also had the very practical applications of providing meat for the table and,

John Donne had fallen in love with Ann More, the daughter of Sir George More of Loseley Park near Guildford. Ann’s family was too important for her to be permitted to marry Donne so the lovers eloped, when Ann was only 17. Once the runaways were found, Sir George had Donne thrown into London’s Fleet Prison. When you have either expanded to the limits of your property above ground, or have been refused planning for expansion above, a basement is the obvious solution. The Mayor’s Thames Festival Esher Hall. Sandown Park Racecourse, Esher Surrey KT10 9AJ

If you haven’t made it along to The Esher Hall Antiques and Fine Art Fair since it was launched three years ago, make a note in your diary now to visit the fair which is returning to Esher Hall at Sandown Park Racecourse from Friday 7 to Sunday 9 October 2011. Instead of hopping on a train to London, why not enjoy the very best on your doorstep from a lineup of over 30 professional antiques dealers, many of whom are often found at the top fairs in the capital. This is an event of distinction for serious collectors, interior decorators, private buyers and those simply wishing to appreciate history through the centuries. The fair is beautifully set out in elegant rows of stands showcasing paintings and sculpture, silver and jewellery, country and town furniture, oriental carpets and clocks, Art Nouveau and Art Deco glassware and much much more. The fair’s relaxed atmosphere, coupled with friendly and informed dealers, makes this the perfect place to find that unique and unusual item.

It is fairly unusual to find works by Moony who was born in Ireland but lived in Cornwall. He studied at the Academy Julian in Paris and produced highly detailed, often ethereal, visionary works. Completely different is ‘Hope for the World’ an original illustration in pen, ink and watercolour by Arthur Rackham for Nathaniel Hawthorne’s ‘A Wonder Book’ published by Hodder and Stoughton in 1922. This is the original artwork which was used for the frontispiece for the book and illustrates the story, ‘The Paradise of Children’ which tells the tale of Pandora’s Box. HOUSE GARDEN date or go out of fashion. Many times I have built a complete contemporary room design around one particular antique object, such as a clock or rocking chair. A statement piece which really adds to this look is a large mirror. A contemporary mirror in a traditional setting can be as striking as an antique mirror in a modern space. The key to success with this is scale. The mirror needs to be a feature without taking too much attention away from the space as a whole. Lighting of all styles is always a fabulous way to create a decorative look, without having to add too much to the space. Feature table lamps, chandeliers and floor lamps can all contribute to a luxurious feel and can softness the space. Low level lighting at night can produce a feeling of cosiness, where as a chandelier as a focal point over a dining table gives a dinner party a finishing touch.

CREATING THE IDEAL AT MODERN & CLASSIC INTERIORS With so much choice on the High Street and such limited advice, it is no surprise clients come to me looking for expertise on furniture solutions. My objective is to create the ideal space for each client in terms of style and functionality through new and refreshing ideas. The key to producing an inspirational interior is to firstly look at room scales and proportions of furniture. Once this has been worked out, sourcing of furniture and soft furnishings can begin. Colour schemes, lighting, 60 SEPTEMBER2011

furniture, flooring, window treatments and soft furnishings all play an important role in the interior you are looking to achieve. A question I am often asked by clients is how to incorporate contemporary pieces into a more tradition setting, or vice versa. This is something which can be done through making the piece in question a feature, whilst tying in the colours and textures through cushions and curtains. In fact, a mixture of styles often produces a timeless eclectic look which is far less likely to

At Modern and Classic Interiors, we endeavour to produce a timeless elegance for each client, whatever their style. Rather than produce repeat designs or have a trade mark look as many other designers do, we translate a client’s personality into their home, giving them a feeling of ownership of the design which they automatically feel very comfortable with. This principal follows through all areas, from fitted dressing rooms to formal living rooms or play areas for children. The large variety of design styles we produce can be achieved through a vast product library, sourced from international and British trade shows such as the furniture fair in Milan, Maison Et Objet in Paris and 100% Design in London. Bespoke furniture is also designed and made for specific places, ranging from one off chairs to complete bookcases or cinema systems. Our design studio in Esher High Street was opened this year to enable clients to come in and see our resources, look through samples and previous projects, and discuss new ideas.

You know when you have made the right decision Could you explain what renewable energy is? Why we need it and where you see the role of BritishEco in the complete picture? Renewable energy is energy that is naturally replenished from the sun, wind, rain and geothermal heat. Renewable energy systems extract this energy and convert it into heat and electricity; because it is naturally replenished quickly it does not consume valuable carbon based fuel sources. It has been well documented that carbon based fuel sources are decreasing, ever difficult and expensive to find and extract and tend to be located in less stable countries than our own. Switching a portion of our energy consumption away from fossil fuels to naturally replenished energy sources means, not only, will we move away from our dependence on fossil fuels, we will gain a much stronger and more secure supply for the future. The BritishEco vision is to provide both individuals and organisations with affordable and reliable renewable energy systems. Is BritishEco a local company? Yes, we are a national company with regional offices across the country. This ensures you get the service and support you need locally, backed up by the head office to ensure you receive the best equipment at the best prices covered by our comprehensive warranties. BritishEco Consultants are professional, industry experts with an extensive knowledge of renewable energies. They provide reliable and honest advice on all renewable technologies. They will also be able to advise you on Government incentives and grants and any local incentives in your area. 62 SEPTEMBER2011

What is the most popular domestic renewable energy opportunities BritishEco specialise in? We specialise in the main renewable technologies for the domestic and commercial market such as, solar photovoltaic (PV) cells for generating electricity, heat pumps, biomass boilers and solar thermal panels to heat your hot water and property, as well as rainwater harvesting and wind turbines.

Won’t these options cost a fortune to install or are there perhaps, government grants available as an incentive – if so, who can claim and how much financial help is available to each household? In April 2010 the Government backed Feed-In Tariffs (FITs) scheme was launched to enable people to be paid for generating electricity from solar panels or a wind turbine fitted in or at their property. In addition to being paid by the Feed-In Tariffs you will also be able to use the electricity you generate for free. The amount you receive for generating electricity can be secured for 25 years; index linked and is completely tax free. The benefits that you will receive for installing

solar panels are 43.3p for every unit of electricity you generate, whether you use it or not. Whatever electricity you do not use you can sell back to the grid and receive a minimum, additional 3 pence for every unit. A typical 4kw domestic solar pv system could attract £1485 per year from the Feed-In Tariffs, £51 from exporting to the national grid and a £206.00 saving on their electricity bill, giving a total benefit to you of

£1742.00 every year for 25 years. Are there complicated issues about securing planning approval to install a domestic renewable energy source? Most renewable energy technologies do not now require planning permission. The Government has relaxed the planning regulations to encourage domestic customers to embrace renewable energy. Wind turbines do still require planning permission and there are environmental and neighbour issues still surrounding them but the acceptance of turbines at both national and local level is increasing. How quickly would an

installation from BritishEco take, who undertakes the work? A typical domestic installation from the point of ordering to being switched on is 6-8 weeks this includes all the detailed design, testing and full commissioning of the system. Each regional office has its own MCS accredited installation teams based locally. How long before a home owner starts to see a benefit or evens gets a return on their investment? As soon as the system is commissioned and the home owner is in receipt of all the necessary documentation that BritishEco will provide them with they are able to begin claiming the Feed-In Tariff and start generating a return on investment. Does BritishEco have any accreditation that offers home owners peace of mind? For the property owner to be eligible for the feed in tariff they must have the system designed, installed and commission by an MCS accredited company. BritishEco are MCS accredited and members of the Renewable Energy Association (REA). Alongside the manufacturers warranties BritishEco offer a 10 year guarantee on the installation of solar photovoltaic panels. Where and how do interested home owners begin the process of discussing the installation of a renewable energy source? By calling us on 0845 257 0041 we will be able to discuss your requirements and put you in touch with our local consultant who will be able to advise you further. It‘s said that home is where the heart is and nobody understands this more than Mary; her belief is that your home should be a reflection of your personality, lifestyle and passions. This is why Mary promises all her clients a scheme which is unique; bespoke, never replicated and above all suits each individual’s taste. Mary and her team offer a combined experience of more than 35 years and have worked on projects ranging from a high tech cinema room to landmark period properties and a palace in Thailand. She and her associates work for private clients, developers and hotels. One of their major achievements was in conjunction with Historic Royal Palaces refurbishing the Master of the Royal Armouries Apartment at the Grade 1 listed Tower of London.

Mary studied History and History of Art at St Mary’s College, Surrey University and is a design graduate of The KLC School of Design. She began her career in the Interior Design Studio at the prestigious Knightsbridge store, Harrods. Five years ago she set up her own Chelsea-based design company

I know that what I create for my clients can’t just be a stunning design, it must also be suited to their lifestyle and form a liveable backdrop that caters to their everyday needs...

‘Whether your personal style is contemporary or classic, I can transform your apartment, town or country home – either here and abroad – into your ideal setting, one that reflects your personality, your needs and your sense of place.’ Mary says. She has three rules of practice. Firstly, she has no set house style, a decision based on years of experience. ‘I know that what I create for my clients can’t just be a stunning design, it must also be suited to their lifestyle and form a liveable backdrop that caters to their everyday needs’. The second rule is that the highest standards of

and hasn’t looked back since. Mary is also an active committee member of the British Institute of Interior Design. It is her love and knowledge of history that helped Mary win the commission to design a

suite at the Cumberland Hotel, Marble Arch to mark the 40th anniversary of the death of Jimi Hendrix. Mary’s challenge was to design a suite that not only represented Hendrix, his passion for music and his vibrant character but also create a room in flamboyant 60s style. Working with her senior design associate Cynthia Garcia, she brought in Andie Airfix (a graphic designer for some of the world’s greatest rock bands, including The Rolling Stones, Sir Paul McCartney and Led Zeppelin), with former NME editor and friend of Hendrix, Keith Altham, as a consultant. The Hendrix suite was instantly an enormous success both with hotel guests and with the press who described it as ‘a hugely entertaining suite’ (Time Out) and ‘a fun experience’ (The Telegraph). Although Mary’s true passion lies in 18th and 19th century design, the success of the Jimmy Hendrix suite confirms that she is not restricted to designing for any particular period. ‘I relish the challenge whether you want to take a historical reference and place it in a modern setting or you are looking for something more contemporary,’ Mary stresses.

...making your dreams reality With gas prices on a continual rise and oil an expensive commodity these days, efficient and eco-friendly renewable methods of heating are an increasingly popular choice, particularly via the use of woodburning and multi-fuel stoves. Not only that, but as the focal point to any room, the fireplace is a key point to start with when wanting to enhance the beauty of your home. There really is little better than cosying up to a warm fire on a cold night. Why not then visit a place dedicated to making this dream a reality? HOUSE GARDEN

What’s wrong with a degree of privacy? I AM SURE THAT YOU HAVE HEARD THE SAYING ‘AN ENGLISHMAN’S HOME IS HIS CASTLE’ AND FOR MOST OF US IT STILL HOLDS TRUE. Our house provides us with the security whilst our garden supplies us with that haven of tranquility, our countryside. It isn’t therefore unnatural that we want to maintain this, particularly during the summer months when we want to relax in a peaceful enviroment not overlooked by the outside world. The calm can be quickly dissolved when you realise that you are being watched by little enquisitive eyes from the children next door, equally annoying could be realising that the quite acceptable extension next door has suddenly dominated the once scenic view. Good screening, hedges to you or I, are the perfect way of putting distance between you and the offending experience, without equally producing another eyesore for the neighbour. October onwards is an ideal time to create a hedge, at this time of year field grown root balled and bare root hedging becomes available. This product, for most types of hedging, is far superior to container grown plants and generally are cheaper, bushier and available in a wider range of types and sizes. If you want a hedge to provide privacy quickly it is a false economy to go too small as often newly planted hedging 70 SEPTEMBER2011

can take 6 months to establish a good root system before growing away rapidly. Establishment of the root system over winter, whilst the rest of the garden is dormant is another reason for planting in autumn and by spring the plants are ready to put on foliage quickly. The choice of type of hedge is huge and largely depends on their different characteristics and cost. Amongst the more common evergreen hedges are Laurel, Prunus laurocerasus, or the smaller leaved Prunus lusitanica, both bearing dark green leaves that provide an excellent backdrop for colourful flower borders. Photinia or red robin are evergreens which provide a bit of character themselves, with their red shoots in spring and early summer, or Holly (Ilex) and Pyracantha with their autumn berries and intruder resistant thorns. Another less commonly seen hedger is made using Elaeagnus which either comes in a silvery green leaf or variegated forms all hardy and they produce small fragrant flowers.

Leylands can be maintained as small or large as you like provided you prune them annually. For a more formal look yew or taxus baccata to give it it’s proper name is a conifer that is slow growing, however that affects its price. For those of you who like to hear and see a bit of nature whilst lounging in the garden evergreens are not the best. Birds and insects are much more likely to be attracted by deciduous Beech (Fagus), Hornbeam ( carpinus), or Hawthorn (Crataegus) planting. Once established any of these can provide a dense screen, which although will drop their leaves in winter (beech retains the coppery dead leaf for most of this period) they will still be dense enough to give privacy bearing in mind not many of us sit outside in winter. I have mentioned only a few of the options available and for more advice I recommend visiting any good nursery where you can find and get advice on a much wider range of options.

Conifers provide very dense screens Act now and create your haven these include the much maligned of tranquility, your green and leylandii and it’s yellow cousin the pleasant land! castlewellan, however like many things position and treatment will www.pantiles-nurseries.co.uk determine how useful they are.

HOUSE GARDEN

OUTDOOR LIVING

WITH GREEN DOT GARDENS THERE ARE MANY WAYS OF EXTENDING YOUR HOME INTO THE GARDEN TO MAKE THE MOST OF THE SUMMER MONTHS. BY CHOOSING AN EXPERIENCED DESIGN TEAM, YOU CAN PLAN A GARDEN THAT SUITS YOUR FAMILY’S NEEDS, AND ALLOWS YOU TO FULLY EMBRACE OUTDOOR LIVING, FROM PLAYING TO COOKING, DINING AND EVEN SHOWERING.

T

he ultimate outdoor lifestyle experience has to be cooking al fresco. You may be used to barbecuing, but aside from a built-in barbecue, the next level of sophistication is a complete outdoor kitchen. This might seem like something more suited to an antipodean garden, but there are plenty of options that can be designed to suit our more temperate weather and will make cooking and eating outdoors just as easy and pleasurable as it is indoors. The key is getting storage and work surfaces right – just like an indoor kitchen. You’ll need to hide those cook’s utensils, and have a decent area for chopping,

preparing and serving. You could even build in an outdoor hob, plumb in a sink or have a pizza oven. Think beyond your usual four walls and talk to a designer who will be able to interpret your vision and your requirements to suit your lifestyle. Green Dot is working with Italian designers, Lida Cucina, to develop specialist outdoor kitchen solutions. Incorporate an outdoor fireplace and you can extend your outdoor living season. Imagine sitting by a roaring fire on your terrace in early spring or late summer? Your designer will also be able to advise you on dining furniture. Do you want built in seating with

hidden storage or a custom-made outdoor table and chairs? Choose from soft or hardwood options, for different effects and different levels of maintenance. For example Western Red Cedar is a great choice – a beautiful timber with its own natural preservative that has its own distinctive perfume and doesn’t need treating with any special oils to maintain its natural sheen. If you enjoy sports and outdoor activities, a garden shower might be worth considering. A handheld shower is perfect for washing off sand and mud before you go indoors. Or try an exhilarating outdoor standing shower to start your day. Whatever’s on your wish list, don’t let your garden be an add-on. If you’re planning an extension, talk to a designer who has a good overview of interior and exterior needs. If you treat your home extension and your garden as one overall project it will benefit the final look – and could benefit your bank balance too. To make the most of your outdoor living space, you need to treat your garden as an integral part of your home. Green Dot has been designing and building gardens for over 10 years creating bespoke solutions that work for grownups and kids in gardens of all different sizes. If you’re rethinking your garden, consulting with an experienced professional designer will reap benefits both economically and aesthetically and can help you can create the garden you’ve always dreamed of.

KEEPING YOUR LAND

GreenPleasant “Whilst the National Trust, Woodland Trust and others are driving forces in countryside conservation, more than 70% of land is privately owned. Our mission at Managed Acres is to help owners of small country estates to manage their land in ways that complement the conservation efforts of the bigger trusts,” explained Mike Jones (Managing Director of Managed Acres) Founded by Mike Jones and Ben Chick, Managed Acres brings a new dimension to estate management, specialising in the upkeep and maintenance of small private estates. Clients are assigned their own personal estate manager, to work on their estate 3 or 4 days a month. With an emphasis on conservation, the manager prepares a 3 year plan for the estate, against which progress is updated on a monthly basis. “Estate management should not be confused with gardening” 74 SEPTEMBER2011

explained Mike, “ All our managers are fully qualified in estate and countryside management and bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to help our clients plan, develop and maintain their estates” Services are tailored to suit individual requirements, managing varied habitats to support wildlife and plant biodiversity. Woodland management, flora and fauna conservation, maintenance of hedges fences and dry stone walling, tree planting, grassland management, pond and lake management, pest and predator control are all part of the service. YOUR OWN ESTATE MANAGER Recent conservation initiatives that Managed Acres have supported include “The Great Elm Project” where The Conservation Foundation is attempting to unlock the mystery of why some trees survived Dutch elm disease which wiped out over 25 million trees in the UK. “To support the

foundation we are supplying, planting and monitoring elm saplings for any of our clients who wish to participate in this experiment”. MANAGING YOUR LAND Whilst currently covering Hampshire, Surrey and West Sussex, the company has plans to expand their operation into neighbouring counties. “For any potential client, interested in finding out what we can offer, I’m happy to come and spend a couple of hours walking around their estate “ explained Ben, himself a qualified countryside estate manager. “I can then discuss their plans and assess how many days a month would be required for us to manage and maintain their estate”

Dynamic Elegance

THE RANGE ROVER EVOQUE September heralds the arrival of the all-new Range Rover Evoque, a vehicle that is as breath-taking to look at as it is to drive. The Range Rover Evoque goes on sale across Surrey having completed a punishing schedule of more than a million development miles in 20 countries - including 5,000miles of testing at the Nürburgring. Available as a stunning coupé or a practical 5-Door model, the Range Rover Evoque brings agile handling and concept car looks to the classic Range Rover package of luxury and all-terrain performance. The Range Rover Evoque exudes dynamic elegance and is available in

three core design themes - from the cool and contemporary ‘Pure’, to the bold and sporting ‘Dynamic’ and the luxurious ‘Prestige’ package – though customers can personalise their vehicle with an array of colour, trim and accessory options. Additional exterior styling items include bright side protection tubes, bodyside decals, coloured wheel centres, and alloy wheels in alternative finishes. Within the vehicle, customers can select features like metal sports pedals and illuminated aluminium and chrome tread plates. The Range Rover Evoque’s interior is deceptively spacious given its

compact proportions and a full-sized panoramic glass roof can be selected in both the coupé and 5-Door to flood the interior with natural light if desired. As you would expect from a Range Rover, the interior features high quality materials and craftsmanship but sees them applied in a more contemporary and sporting fashion. Among the special touches are premium leather with twin-needle stitching on the instrument panel, doors and seats, plus displays that come to life through a choreographed start-up sequence. The Range Rover Evoque provides customers with a host of premium technologies - including an 8-inch,

high-definition touch-screen display with optional dual-view technology that allows a passenger to watch a DVD while the driver follows navigation instructions. Entertainment options include Digital and Satellite TV, DVD playback capability - which passengers can enjoy via 8-inch screens mounted in the headrests and digital infrared wireless headphones. New sound systems, developed in partnership with audio specialist Meridian and including a range-topping 825W, 17-speaker system, are also available. However, the true test is how it drives and it is here that a million

F E AT U R E development miles prove their worth. Starting with the Range Rover Sport, which has a similar DNA to a luxury sports saloon, dynamics specialists set out to give the Range Rover Evoque a sporting character consistent with its looks. They focused on ensuring that the Range Rover Evoque was agile and fun to drive, so particular attention was paid to steering precision and agility at lower speeds. As a result it offers a rewarding experience even during day-to-day urban driving but retains excellent body control and suffers no loss of poise. Taking ride and handling to the next level, Range Rover Evoque customers have the opportunity to specify a state-of-the-art new Adaptive Dynamics feature, which sees MagneRide™ dampers monitoring and adapting to vehicle movements 1000 times/second* to help minimise body roll and provide an even more balanced drive. Naturally the Range Rover Evoque delivers all-surface capability and makes use of a unique suite of technologies to maximise performance and comfort in

challenging on- and off-road conditions. These include the latest version of the company’s signature Terrain ResponseTM system – which has settings for General Driving, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud/Ruts and Sand to optimise driveability and comfort. When specifying the Adaptive Dynamics feature there is also an additional ‘Dynamic’ setting. For customers looking for reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, the Evoque is the first Range Rover to offer a choice between the standard, full-time four-wheel-drive system and a frontwheel-drive option tuned to deliver the same agile handling. A choice of engines are available from a 150hp 2.2 litre turbo diesel eD4 engine that delivers less than 129g/km CO2 (in front-wheeldrive coupé form), to a 190hp SD4 version which gets from 0-60mph in 8.0 seconds when equipped with the automatic gearbox and a new 240hp 2.0 litre

turbo-charged petrol engine capable of 0-60mph in just 7.1 seconds. The Range Rover Evoque’s compact size has enabled engineers to minimise weight, improve aerodynamics and reduce the quantity of materials required to produce it. Each car also uses 16kg of recycled plastic material in components including wheel arch liners and the engine cover - diverting many tonnes of waste from landfill. On sale from September, the Range

Rover Evoque represents desirable sophistication - priced from £27,955 for an eD4 ‘Pure’ 5-door model (equipped with 6 speed manual gearbox and two–wheel drive) to £44,320 for a top-ofthe-range Si4 ‘Dynamic’ coupé (equipped with 6 speed automatic gearbox and LUX pack).

Openhealth Clinic is a modern multi-disciplined clinic offering both Physiotherapy and Osteopathy, with the benefit of an on-site Rehabilitation Studio featuring Technogym’s Kinesis equipment. Their small team of eleven practitioners claim their approach is different from most. Graeme Rider, the Clinic’s Director, explained “I have been a practising Osteopath in this area for some fourteen years, and despite my best efforts some patients would come back complaining ‘my backs gone again!’ or ‘it’s the shoulder, same as before’. I had to consider whether something had been missed in the diagnosis and 84 SEPTEMBER2011

subsequent treatment. Or, had the patient been unable to strengthen the region by not carrying out his or her prescribed rehab exercises properly”. It was this dilemma that led Graeme to look for a different and more holistic and complete approach. A DIFFERENT APPROACH Openhealth patient’s are not necessarily assigned to just one particular practitioner. As Graeme acknowledges “I don’t believe just one discipline can hold all the answers, whether it is Osteopathy, Physiotherapy, Sports Massage or Rehabilitation. The trick is to use the right discipline at the right time. We approach your injury in a highly individual and dynamic way.” During your initial consultation

with the clinic’s Osteopaths or Physiotherapists, a diagnosis and treatment plan will be established that might involve you being referred on to, for example, their Acupuncturist or Clinical Pilates Instructor, rather

of re-occurrence. It’s a shame that the average person believes Rehabilitation is probably just for elite athletes, its simply not the case. Our Technogym Kinesis Circuit provides the ultimate in rehab. It allows us to recreate any physical movement safely, from the complexities of the golf swing to the simplicity of loading and unloading the dishwasher”. MIKE B’S TREATMENT PLAN

than simply having a short series of purely Osteopathic or Physiotherapy treatments. Graeme and his team are confident it is the attention to detail that is key, “We feel this approach maximises improvements whilst at the same time reducing the likelihood

“Mike had an eight year history of worsening lower back pain and spasms. The worst thing for him was standing. After just five minutes he would experience intense back pain and numbness into

both legs. He’d had an MRI scan which showed little of note. Having examined him we believed there were three issues to deal with, a mechanical problem within his pelvis, tight muscles in the backs of his legs, and poor posture.

practitioners have collectively amassed seventy five years of clinical experience and treated a wide variety of International sports teams and individuals, including numerous PGA Tour Professionals and Polo players.

After a just couple of Osteopathy and Sports Massage appointments, he went into the Rehab studio using our Technogym Kinesis Wall to start correcting his posture. I am delighted to report Mike is now pain free, runs three times a week and has returned to full and active health. I am convinced it was the combination of the three disciplines as part of a structured plan, that made the difference.”

Good communication is essential, each practitioner must be aware of their own limitations and the possible benefits of their colleague’s approach and unique set of skills...

QUALIFIED AND EXPERIENCED PRACTITIONERS Like any business, getting together a good team was going to be key to the Clinic. Openhealth’s small team of

Both the Osteopaths and Physiotherapists are registered with all the private medical insurance companies including Bupa and AXA PPP, so you will be able to get reimbursement for their treatments. “Unfortunately this crossreferring concept is not the norm in musculo-skeletal medicine. Therefore we have to make sure the guys here at Openhealth are all reading from the same song sheet. Good communication is

essential, each practitioner must be aware of their own limitations and the possible benefits of their colleague’s approach and unique set of skills.” PREVENTATIVE MEDICINE Of course not all Openhealth’s patients have long standing injuries. They operate as a regular Physiotherapy and Osteopathic Clinic treating the day to day niggles that we all seem to suffer from. However, it is reassuring to know they have other specialists on hand should things turn out to be a little more involved than first thought. They are also keen to point out the benefits of maintenance treatments in trying to prevent injuries from occurring. Graeme explains, “I find it interesting that we are all fully aware of the undoubted benefits of six monthly checks ups at the dentist. It helps prevent problems from developing, and yet most of us aren’t used to getting our musculo-skeletal systems checked even once a year!”.

Apparently you do not need to be referred by your GP, although if you intend to claim on your private medical insurance you will probably need a letter of referral. They seem to be very approachable, Graeme offers a couple of ways to get in touch before necessarily booking a consultation. “If you’d like a little more information on whether Openhealth might be able to help you, you are welcome to phone me direct or send any one of our practitioners an email via their pages on our website.”

Can teeth whitening damage teeth? No. Teeth whitening is a safe and effective technique that is scientifically proven. The treatment involves the use of custom fitting whitening trays and a very small amount of whitening gel (carbamide peroxide). You need to apply the gel to teeth for 1-2 hours a day for 2-3 weeks. The whitening occurs via an oxygenation process within the structure of teeth. Problems can occur if you have ill fitting trays or if you use certain ‘over the counter’ whitening products. For the best advice and your total safety, it is always best to have professional teeth whitening with the dentist.
