WARNER BROS. STUDIO TOUR LONDON
THE MAKING OF HARRY POTTER
B
Brings you Magical Mischief until 1st May 2022!
rand new for 2022, Warner Bros. Studio Tour London is revealing the filmmaking trickery behind the Harry Potter film series as it shines a spotlight on magical pranks and mishaps in the new feature, Magical Mischief. Visitors to the Studio Tour can learn how their favourite mischievous moments from the films were brought to the screen in this exciting feature. Entering the Great Hall, fans will recognise the set dressed for a Weasley prank on the peaceful O.W.L.s exam, complete with the swinging pendulum under the watchful eye of Dolores Umbridge. From the fan favourite scene in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the infamous pink two-piece costume of Dolores Umbridge is centre stage and visitors should look above to see the playful Weasley twins’ costumes on their broomsticks suspended from the Great Hall ceiling. Demonstrations throughout the Studio Tour during this feature include how clever camera trickery created the disappearing effect of the invisibility cloak and visitors will also be able to get hands on to make their own origami howler, just like the one Mrs Weasley delivered to her son in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. The Studio Tour highlights the magical mishaps that happen throughout the films including how the SFX Team created the infamous fireplace letter scene at 4 Privet Drive during the filming
of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and Fred and George Weasley’s accidental beards and burned costumes after they put their names into the Goblet of Fire, created by the Creature Effects Team. Eagle-eyed visitors will spot a number of pesky Cornish Pixies on the loose around the Studio Tour and are invited to find them all and collect stamps as part of their Magical Mischief activity passport.

MAKING PARENTING EASIER
THE TRICK TO SOLO TRAVELLING WITH KIDS
All parents are unique and have created their own little tricks to ease parenthood. For this reason, Leclerc Baby works with a lot with brand ambassadors to gather real life stories (not just the positive ones) from moms and dads. Working together helps the brand to find out more about parents struggles but also their tricks to make things easier.
30 FEB/MAR 2022
When you have two children and you like to travel, you need to be well prepared is what Sotera explains: ‘’You always carry a lot of stuff, and every space counts. With a baby you need the stroller to be comfortable, small and compact. With the Leclerc Baby stroller I can hold my daughter and fold my stroller easily with one hand. Thanks to Leclerc Baby I can rely on my stroller, and I am no longer afraid to travel alone with my baby.’’
THE BEST 3-IN-1 TIP With the cozy carrycot you can use Leclerc Baby the pushchair right from birth. The great thing about this carrycot is that it is very spacious and comfortable for the baby, but it can be flat-packed once you get it off the buggy.
THE TIPS AND TRICKS OF BRAND AMBASSADOR SOTERA Sotera is a mom blogger who knows all the great brands after six years of collaborations. The mom of two beautiful daughters tried many products, including strollers. Sotera tells us: ‘’When I got the opportunity to try out the Leclerc Baby stroller during my travels, I was really surprised. I did not expect that the stroller would be so light and so easy to manoeuvre! It is a great addition to our family’’.
THE REAL THING Social media does not always reflect the reality, but according to Sotera the Leclerc Baby stroller is even better in real life: ‘’It is easy when I go shopping and with the compact size I have enough room left in my car! Even though it is small and compact, it is still so strong, I used the stroller in the snow and the woods. I don’t want a big stroller anymore and I would recommend the Leclerc Baby stroller to everyone!’’ leclercbaby.com

GORGEOUS CHILDREN’S CLOTHING FROM TILLY & JASPER
T
illy & Jasper are committed to achieving longterm sustainability, with the aim of helping combat the impact of fast fashion. Founded around their kitchen table in 2017 by husband-and-wife team Arend and Philippa, and still run today from their rural HQ in East Sussex, Tilly & Jasper continue to focus on their vision of providing beautiful children’s clothing that leave as little impact on the environment as possible. Named after their own children and obvious inspiration, Tilly & Jasper, founders Arend and Philippa wanted to establish a company that would help leave a legacy of positive change. Through their intentional choice of designs made from low impact, natural materials, their hope is to help spark curiosity and raise awareness of the effect our clothing choices have on the environment. In recent years, it has been demonstrated that the fashion industry is one of the most damaging when it comes to our planet, rife with over consumption and excessive production of shortlived, low quality, disposable products. To help combat this challenge, Tilly & Jasper offer one of the most sustainably produced collections of beautifully made, long lasting children’s clothing from 0 to 8 years. Made almost entirely from organic cotton and recycled plastics, Tilly & Jasper offer an outstanding selection of bright, fun styles,

that are as varied as the characters of the little ones they are designed for. Choosing organic clothing offers a wealth of benefits. Organic cotton is grown without the use of harmful chemicals, which helps preserve soil, conserve energy and reduces water usage. Not only does this aid towards a lower carbon footprint, but it can also provide a much more comfortable material for your children to wear, helping reduce the likelihood of allergic reactions for newborn or sensitive skin. Being made from a higher quality organic cotton means clothing can last much longer and be handed on once it has been outgrown, reducing the amount we produce and consume. Tilly & Jasper offer one of the largest collections of beautiful organic children’s clothing in the UK. xtended time at home these last two years means we’re all looking for something that makes home feel, well, more like home. Not the office or the classroom, but home. A place to relax and switch off. These days your heart skips an extra beat when you find something a little bit special. SarahMicheleDesigns is one of those discoveries. Hand painted onto the wall to create happy rooms that inspire wonder and curiosity among little people. The SarahMicheleDesigns vision is to create rooms for little people, which are beautiful, inspiring and calm yet playful too. A much needed alternative to wall stickers and decals. SarahMicheleDesigns are designed bespoke to all budgets. Sarah and her team will work with you to ensure the finished design is exactly what you have in mind. We spoke to founder, Sarah Michele, about what inspired her to set up the business. My business was born out of my own passion for creating beautiful and unique nurseries. Having not been able to find exactly what I wanted for the nurseries I was designing for my own children, I decided to do it myself as I’ve always had a passion for drawing and painting. Friends then referred me to friends and the business was born! Since Sarah launched her business in 2021 it has gone from strength to strength. You only need to read the testimonials she gets to understand that this is a talented lady who

leaves a trail of happy clients. When asked what drives her, Sarah explains, it’s the reactions I get from both the parents and their little ones. When they walk into the room when I’ve finished painting and the first word they utter is ‘wow’ or you see a tear in a mum’s eye. That’s a truly special moment. Whether you are interested in commissioning her yourself or you wish to gift someone special, take a moment lusting over her designs at sarahmicheledesigns.co.uk. The designs and murals are quite simply, stunning.

KATE ‘UNDERWHELMED’ AT CHANCE TO BE ON JOSH WIDDICOMBE’S PARENTING HELL PODCAST By Laura Elston
C
omic Josh Widdicombe has told how he has never seen someone look “more underwhelmed” in his life than when he asked the Duchess of Cambridge to appear on his parenting podcast. Father-of-two Widdicombe presents the hit series Parenting Hell with friend and fellow comedian Rob Beckett, in which they chat to celebrities about the trials and tribulations of modern-day parenthood. Widdicombe encountered Kate at the Royal Variety Performance in November, and revealed his agent bet him £100 he would not ask the duchess to appear on his podcast. The duchess, mother to Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, focuses her charity work on the early years of childhood and its crucial impact on outcomes in later life.
48 FEB/MAR 2022
But Widdicombe told ITV’s Good Morning Britain (GMB): “She brings up parenting because it’s what I spoke about in the stand-up, and I was like, this is my chance. And I said, ‘We’d love to have you on the podcast’. “I’ve never seen someone more underwhelmed at a question in my life. She moved very quickly on to the cast of Matilda, I’ll tell you that for free.” Asked by presenter Susanna Reid if Kate listened to the podcast, he replied: “If she does, she’s playing a very canny game of looking like she didn’t know what I was talking about.” Kate has already made a parenting podcast debut, appearing on Happy Mum Happy Baby hosted by Giovanna Fletcher in 2020. She confessed to struggling with “mummy guilt” and said she tried “hypnobirthing” when pregnant.

Has Covid made your child a fussy eater? How to make sure kids get a balanced diet
Coronavirus can cause a condition called parosmia, say experts. By Katie Wright
H
ave you noticed a change in your child’s eating habits since they had Covid? If you have, they may be suffering from parosmia, a disorder which causes strange or unpleasant smell distortions, such as chocolate smelling like petrol. According to smell experts at the University of East Anglia and Fifth Sense, the charity for people affected by smell and taste disorders, the condition may affect children in particular, meaning they no longer want to eat foods they once loved. “We know that an estimated 250,000 adults in the UK have suffered parosmia as a result of a Covid infection,” says Carl Philpott, from UEA’s Norwich Medical School. “But in the last few months, particularly since
50 FEB/MAR 2022
Covid started sweeping through classrooms last September, we’ve become more and more aware that it’s affecting children too. In many cases, the condition is putting children off their food, and many may be finding it difficult to eat at all.” In one case, 11-year-old Malisse Kafi, who had coronavirus in September, became dangerously ill when he struggled to eat, because everything tasted like “poo and rotten eggs”. So, what should parents do if their child is experiencing parosmia?
Minimise smells “With this disorder, foods can smell like, let’s say poo, because certain receptors or certain nerves are sort of temporarily disabled,” explains Noel
“In the last few months, particularly since Covid started sweeping through classrooms last September, we’ve become more and more aware that it’s affecting children too”
Janis-Norton, parenting expert and author of Calmer, Easier, Happier Mealtimes. “If children are given cold or chilled foods to eat, it’s less likely to trigger that feeling that it smells awful, compared to hot foods. Things with very strong smells – like coffee or garlic – are likely to make it worse, so obviously go for mild flavours.” She also advises not to serve meals “family-style, where there’s a pot of something on the table”, because the smell could be “assaulting the child’s sensors the whole time”.
selection of (non-smelly) foods on the table to choose from. “Not only does this stop them from feeling pressured by a full plate, but gives them the option of trying what they would like to eat.” Don’t pressure your child, even if they’re reluctant to try new foods, she continues: “Instead, try to remain calm and positive during meal times. And if you are worried, speak to your child’s GP about your concerns and their diet. It may be that you can supplement with vitamins or other foods/ drinks, but you should always speak to a medical professional first for advice.”
“Listen carefully and take on board what they are saying. Don’t use negative throw away comments such as, ‘Don’t be silly’ or ‘It’s no big deal’”
Keep calm Parosmia can be stressful for both parents and children. Georgina Durrant, author of 100 Ways Your Child Can Learn Through Play, says it’s understandable if mums and dads are “concerned their children aren’t eating a balanced diet, and may be missing out on vital nutrients. They may also be worried about weight loss”. However, it’s important to deal with the problem calmly and make sure families don’t pass on this stress to the child who is struggling to eat the food. “The additional pressure and worry can make a stressful situation even worse.”
Listen to your child We often talk about fussy or picky eaters, but using negative language can be detrimental. “I dislike the term ‘fussy’ as often children aren’t being picky but, due to sensory differences, find certain food unpleasant to eat,” says Durrant. “This is similar with parosmia, children and young people are by no means choosing not to eat food to be difficult.” She suggests talking to your child openly and asking how they’re feeling: “Listen carefully and take on board what they are saying. Don’t use negative throw away comments such as, ‘Don’t be silly’ or ‘It’s no big deal’.”
Make mealtimes stress-free Prof Philpott advises: “Encourage children to try different foods with less strong flavours, such as pasta, bananas, or mild cheese – to see what they can cope with or enjoy.” In order to make it less daunting, Durrant suggests starting with empty plates and having a FEB/MAR 2022 51

Breast cancer awareness Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in the UK with around 1 in 8 women developing breast cancer in their lifetime. Mammogram: A mammogram is an x-ray of the breast and is used to investigate symptoms as well as being offered as part of the breast screening programme to women ages 50-70 in England. In younger women, the breast tissue can be quite dense and therefore an ultrasound can be more effective.
“Other imaging studies are also used such as MRI, and often along with examination of the breasts the doctor may be able to make a diagnosis”
B
eing aware of symptoms can lead to earlier diagnosis and treatment, and with that more effective treatment and improved survival rates. Most women diagnosed with breast cancer are over 50, however younger women can also be affected; around 5,600 women under the age of 45 are diagnosed with breast cancer every year in the UK. Breast cancer is possible, but very rare in men. Early detection is key – many breast lumps and breast symptoms are not cancerous but it is always best to get your symptoms checked by a doctor. Symptoms to look out for include: • A lump or area in the breast that feels thicker than the rest of the breast • Swelling of all or part of the breast, a change in size or shape of one of the breasts • A lump or swelling in either one of your armpits • Nipple discharge (other than breast milk) • Breast or nipple pain • A change in skin texture such as puckering or dimpling (like an orange peel) • Redness or rash of the breast skin and/or around the nipple • Nipple retraction (nipple is pulled inwards) or a change in appearance of the nipple If you are concerned a doctor can examine you and advise if you need further investigations or referral to a breast clinic. Investigations may include the following:
52 FEB/MAR 2022
Breast Ultrasound: Ultrasound uses sound waves to produce images of breast tissue. It can be used to determine whether a lump is a fluid filled cyst or solid mass. Other imaging studies are also used such as MRI, and often along with examination of the breasts the doctor may be able to make a diagnosis. However, the only sure way to know if a suspicious area is cancerous is to take a sample of tissue and examine it under a microscope, called a biopsy. A biopsy is when a small sample of breast cells is taken to test if they are cancerous. Needle biopsies are the most common type using a needle to extract a sample of tissue from the breast, usually under a local anaesthetic. thelondongeneralpractice.com
Dr Catrin Bevan
TREATMENT Treatment of breast cancer includes surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy. If you have symptoms it is important to seek advice from your doctor. Early recognition and detection of breast cancer increases the chance of treatment before it spreads, leading to more successful outcomes and survival rates.

QUEEN ETHELBURGA’S COLLEGIATE’S PRIMARY PROVISION RE-AWARDED PRIMARY QUALITY MARK AWARD
Chapter House, the Early Years, Infants and Junior School at Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate has been reawarded the prestigious Primary Quality Mark Award for English and Mathematics by the national programme The Quality Mark. This national accreditation is awarded to schools which meet the Quality Mark Standard and lasts for a period of three years, with Chapter House previously being awarded the Quality Mark in 2018.
58 FEB/MAR 2022
T
he Quality Mark promotes, supports and celebrates progress and improvements made by a school in English and Mathematics. Without these ‘basic skills’ of good communication, English and mathematical skills, individuals are disadvantaged throughout their lives – as learners, in the workplace and as parents, consumers and citizens and so they form the ‘bedrock’ of good education. To achieve the Award, Chapter House went through a repeat of the assessment process carried out by an external assessor against the 10 ‘Elements’ of the Quality Mark framework. These cover key aspects of the school’s improvement approach, including the identification and analysis of the school’s needs; strategic planning; target setting for improvement; intervention and support for pupils under-achieving or underattaining; provision of quality in both teaching and in resources; staff development; and active engagement with families. Renewal of the Award shows that effective monitoring and evaluation have been in place since the previous Award in 2018. This new Award follows swiftly on from
Chapter House being awarded the Primary Science Quality Mark (PQSM) Gilt, earned in June 2021. This accolade is given to schools which can demonstrate how established effective science leadership is having a sustained impact on science teaching and learning within a school. Karen Kilkenny, Head of Chapter House, said ‘Thank you to Joanna Young, our Deputy Head, who has worked closely with staff to ensure that we have maintained our excellent standards since first being awarded the Primary Quality Mark in 2018. The award is a reflection of the high standards of teaching and the safe, happy, challenging environment we provide for the Chapter House children. Our children are eager to take risks and reflect on what they have learnt so they can be ready for any challenge they may face in the future.’ To find out more visit qe.org for more information

Rise to the Challenge of Learning with ‘Excellent Learning’ Animals
S
et within five acres of green fields and woodland, Dulwich Prep London’s Early Years is a popular choice for families who are looking to provide their children with a solid foundation to their education right from the start. Children spend two fantastic years at the Early Years site (Nursery and Reception), before moving up to the purpose-built Pre-Prep, for Years 1 and 2 at Dulwich Prep’s Alleyn Park site. The transition from the Early Years to the Alleyn Park site is made seamless for the children through the continuation of important key themes. Parents visiting the Pre-Prep for the first time, after coming from the Early Years, often comment on the abundance of diverse decorations and displays hanging from walls and ceilings and immediately feel at ease once they see the fabulous facilities. When it comes to their child’s learning, the language of Excellent Learning is one that the whole of the Early Years community know like the back of their hand. Developed by Dr Ruth Burtonshaw, Head of Early Years at Dulwich Prep London, the Excellent Learning programme was designed to help children form positive learning skills, recognising that attitudes to learning are significant in determining how well we learn. Are you a ‘Willing Wolf ’ or a ‘Persevering Parrot’? Through the Excellent Learning animals children are taught how to rise to the challenges of learning. The Excellent Learning animals provide children with a framework for learning. Each week, children from Nursery to Year 8 focus on one of the 12 characteristics of Excellent Learning. Children are supported to become more aware of their learning skills and to develop good learning habits so that they leave Dulwich Prep as confident, motivated, independent and successful learners.
60 FEB/MAR 2022
Importantly, Excellent Learning is visually appealing and simple for children to understand, using animal ‘hooks’ and bright colours to aid memory. From a teachers’ perspective, it is a simple scaffold to incorporate into curriculum planning and tailor to suit the needs of individual children. Listening actively to instructions, being a happy and optimistic learner, using your imagination, developing targets and goals, doing your best and knowing that effort counts and sharing knowledge and ideas are all personal attributes that, through engaging with Excellent Learning, the children at Dulwich Prep London develop and take with them through their journey in education and beyond.

Herne Hill School shapes futures
R
esearch published by Durham University in December 2017 established that Reception is the school year with the greatest impact on a child’s education. The paper entitled “The Long-Term Impact of Effective Teaching” concluded that children who benefited from good quality educational provision in Reception went on to achieve better GCSE results in English and maths. The study also acknowledged that, based on other research, high-quality pre-school provision is arguably even more important for a child’s educational development. More broadly, it is widely recognised that the future success of every child is largely determined before he or she turns eight – the age coinciding with the end of the Early Child Education period, which requires a specialist pedagogical approach. Since its foundation in 1976, Herne Hill School has focused exclusively on educating children in precisely this crucial period, providing for them from Kindergarten (2+) to Year 2 (7+). Last year, it opened a new dedicated Kindergarten at the

the statutory requirements of the English EYFS and Key Stage 1 national curriculum”, says Ngaire Telford, who is only the third Headteacher in the school’s history. Herne Hill School benefits from being just the right size for its focused five-year provision. On the one hand, being the largest stand-alone independent school in the country specialising in this age range affords it the scale required to employ a critical mass of expert early years educators and state-of-the-art facilities and resources. On the other hand, it is sufficiently small to enjoy a warm and friendly family community atmosphere in which the children benefit from deep relationships with these loving, caring and expert staff.

educational life – from the conclusion of the EYFS to Key Stage 1, through which the children need to adapt to greater academic demands and increasingly more formal learning required by the National Curriculum. Maintaining their love of learning and engagement through age-appropriate play and by having fun is most crucial. In addition, Herne Hill School also makes a virtue of the children becoming the oldest pupils at the school to develop their sense of social responsibility and leadership skills. All this combines to prepare them to move on to their next schools in Year 3 with a special spark in their eyes and equipped with a comprehensive set of life skills and values. hernehillschool.co.uk

Strong ethos and high-quality staff Asked about what she believes to be the greatest success factors for cutting-edge ECE provision, Mrs Telford spontaneously replies “ethos and staff ”. She explains: “A strong and purposeful ethos can provide an all-encompassing cultural umbrella for everyone’s behaviours at the school. Our own ethos of ‘Love · Care · Excellence’ encapsulates our commitment to excellence and conviction that love and care are prerequisites for optimising a young child’s learning trajectory. But ultimately, having amazing staff is even more important as it is they who develop the supportive relationships required to guide young children, day-in day-out, on their crucial ‘whole child’ development journey.” Following their successful start in the Kindergarten, the Herne Hill School children are gradually introduced to the school’s main site. Recent achievements such as achieving Bronze & Silver awards by the Healthy Early Years Partnership and the Millie’s mark for excellence in First Aid training and practice result from inspirational and passionate leadership. All settings will follow the Early Years Foundation stages of learning, but inspectors are looking for the children to be truly engaged with the learning process. Much of this you can see in the children’s work, development folders or on the display boards. One recent practical improvement by Dawn Cove at Little People of Willow Vale was the introduction of “Forest School’- trips in wellies and wet weather gear, to local parks to see and learn about the natural environment, taking calculated risks like climbing trees, identifying birds and insects. PRIVATE TUITION BEYOND EXAM SUCCESS
F
or many parents, the desire to secure the best education for their child is about setting them up for career success. Tuition is seen as a way to support pupils to secure top grades. Currently 10% of parents pay for private tuition, according to education charity Sutton Trust - a figure untouched by the pandemic and that has doubled over the last decade. But as top grades continue to rise, employers have lost faith in existing exam systems. A recent survey by The Times Education Commission showed that one in seven employers now give no consideration at all the GCSE and A-Level grades when hiring. So while private tuition can certainly improve your child’s grades, the benefits of one-to-one support go far beyond this. Mainstream education has become standardised to the point that it is losing its core ethos – curiosity and creativity. Children are natural born learners. From a young age they ask a host of weird and wonderful questions – many of which leave parents baffled! But without the right education support, this can be lost along the way. In order to keep students engaged, their education has to be personalised. It must speak to interests and ambitions – something which is impossible to do in a classroom setting. From teaching science through Minecraft, maths through robotics, and creative writing through
66 FEB/MAR 2022
video game development, feeding their passions and their exploring interests takes young people beyond the basic curriculum - delivering lessons they will remember for a lifetime. Tuition not only encourages curiosity, but instils a level of confidence to question the world around them and seek new solutions. The world’s most successful entrepreneurs have one thing in common – the ability to identify a problem none of us saw coming. Innovation depends on curiosity. Private tuition helps your child develop the skills and experience they need to stand out from the crowd and equips them with skills to guarantee success. We need a new generation of creative thinkers to tackle important issues, and this takes a certain kind of education to inspire them. Carfax Education provides bespoke tuition that inspires learning, encourages creativity and builds confidence. Our tutoring model takes pupils beyond basic exam preparation, developing the skills to become leaders and innovators. Our carefully selected tutors are drawn from Oxbridge and Ivy League universities, and act as mentors, working with your child to apply their interests and strengths to academic subjects beyond the syllabus for a fuller learning experience. LESSONS FROM FIVE BELOVED CHILDREN’S BOOK & FILM CHARACTERS By Cath Kidston
.
D
o you remember reading Winniethe-Pooh cradled in your mum’s lap and flickering through the colourful pages with astute childish curiosity? Winnie-the-Pooh alongside a plethora of timeless children’s books and films bring a sense of nostalgia to our everyday lives. We absorb the enchanting personalities of our beloved film and book characters. They’re our teachers, our role models, and our door to a world of imagination. Here are five adored children’s characters that have stood the test of time…….
Matilda Wormwood, Roald Dahl Matilda, the eponymous young hero in Roald Dahl’s tale, is the ultimate role model for little girls. She is kind-hearted, intelligent, brave, and gifted. Matilda possesses the incredible ability to move objects using only her eyes. But her 5-year-old superpowers remain unnoticed by all the important adult figures in her life: her dad, who is a car salesman; her mum, who loves the bingo; and her cruel headmistress
74 FEB/MAR 2022
Ms Trunchbull, who is an ex-Olympic hammerthrowing champion. Matilda’s fate takes a different direction when she meets the beloved Miss Honey who recognises the girl’s bright and kind nature. Miss Honey helps her harness her superpower and set things right in this unfair world. Since its publication in 1988, the story of Matilda was adapted into a movie in 1996, and a new version is in the pipeline, set to be released in 2022.
Hermione Granger, J. K. Rowling What’s not to love about Hermione? Featuring in the Harry Potter series, she’s witty, enchanting and beloved by both boys and girls. Hermione charms with her childhood innocence fused with her astonishing magical superpowers. A heroine to look up to. Her impeccable intelligence is a tool as powerful as her magic wand. She’s saved her friends on multiple occasions, but her most awe-inspiring act of bravery was when she saved her parents. Little did J. K. Rowling know what an epic female character she was creating when her first book was published in 1997. The affection children have shown towards Hermione and the rest of the Harry Potter characters, both in the books and the films have been, well magical!
Peter Pan, J. M. Barrie Imagine a childhood that never ends. Well, Scottish novelist J. M. Barrie fully realised his longing for an eternal childhood through the fictional character Peter Pan. The young boy who never grows up and can fly. first appeared in the author’s book The Little White Bird in 1902 and has made many beloved appearances since in books, plays, and films.
Peter Pan is the leader of his gang, the Lost Boys, in Neverland, the island of endless play and fairies’ mischiefs. There, he can practise an array of abilities, including mimicry and sword-fighting. Through his impeccable hearing and vision, he can sense incoming danger and can also imagine things into existence. He is an elucidation of pure, never-ending youth, unburdened by the constructs of society and adulthood. His free spirit is beyond contagious for all the young souls in the world.
Alice Liddell, Lewis Carroll Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland literally takes us down the rabbit hole, on a journey through child-like naivety, chance encounters, enchanted forests, and many lessons learnt. Through the lens of the author’s vast imagination and the fusion of characters, Lewis Carroll portrays Alice Liddell in a mystifying fashion. At first depicted as a curious but stubborn little girl, she grows as the books unfold not only in size but also in character. By the end of the second book Through the Looking Glass, she becomes a mature, well-rounded, and astute girl, which can only be achieved through the adventures of the imagination. The all-time favourite children and adult’s fictional character has since inspired an array of film adaptations, exhibitions, and many other art forms that appraise her perplexed yet charming personality. We’ve all learnt a thing or two from our beloved children’s film and book characters. They will stay in our hearts and minds forever, and it’s our responsibility to pass on their magic to the next generation! Sources: roalddahl.com/roald-dahl/characters/children/matilda-wormwood en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Pan coursehero.com/lit/Alice-in-Wonderland/character-analysis/ news.disney.com/the-15-most-important-winnie-the-pooh-quotes-accordingto-you
Winnie-the-Pooh, A. A. Milne The cute yellow cuddly bear has been an all-time favourite since its creation in 1926. But the story of Pooh’s adventures really made its fans’ hearts skip a beat after the release of the film Goodbye Christopher Robin in 2017. The film narrates the real-life story of Winniethe-Pooh’s creation, which was inspired by the toys of Christopher Robin, A. A. Milne’s son. Winnie-the-Pooh is an adorable, kind, and intelligent bear who is, above all, a trusted friend. Although slow-witted, Pooh is a source of endless wisdom, conveying his insightfulness through the means of poetry – his shining talent. Hence, the book often features Pooh’s poems and “hums.” As the wise yellow bear says: “You’re braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.”

AWARD WINNING SMART BLUEBELL BABY MONITOR
W
hen your newborn arrives, there is a lot to learn and no instruction manual which can lead to you worrying about your baby and in turn make it harder to enjoy those early months with your little one. This was the reason why the founders at Bluebell designed their award winning Bluebell Baby Monitor. Creating a smart monitor that monitors more, so parents worry less. Combining features such as breathing and temperature monitoring, sleep tracking, roll on tummy notifications and routine tracking, along with audio and video as well as some added benefits of lullabies, white noise and nightlight. All bundled up into the 9-in-1 monitor complete with Bluebell app. “Parenting isn’t easy and getting a little bit of help in the early days can make the world of difference” says Dr. Naveen Sharma, Bluebell founder. “We created Bluebell to give parents peace of mind and provide lots of practical and useful features to support them in their parenting journey.” Elizabeth Lodge-Knowles, respiratory nurse and mum to Barney talks about her experience: “My respiratory background meant that I was probably more anxious than most new parents about their baby’s well-being. However, added complications when my son Barney arrived made my anxiety even worse. As soon as Barney was born we were both 78 FEB/MAR 2022
hospitalised with sepsis, further adding to my parental worries, so to say the early days were difficult is an understatement. Once we returned home, I was unable to relax, I worried constantly about Barney- I could not rest or sleep peacefully because I felt so anxious. Then I heard about Bluebell. It offered all the peace of mind I needed, offering all in one monitoring. The moment we set up the Bluebell I felt myself relax, I was able to get the rest I needed knowing I would be alerted if Barney had any problems. After his first set of injections at 8 weeks, I received an alert in the night that his temperature was going up. After investigating we took Barney to A&E due to his high temperature. This early notification of his temperature going up from our Bluebell, enabled us to react quickly. It’s a fabulous baby monitor! A must for any new parent” bluebellbabymonitor.com
