I
attended the latest joint council meeting in Orlando and came away more confused than ever. It seems now that our fishery managers believe that the kingfish stocks are so healthy that they are seriously considering raising the quota from ten million pounds to eleven to thirteen million pounds. Here’s the absurdity of the whole thing. You couldn’t kill ten million pounds of king mackerel if your life depended on it. The commercial fishermen collect a little over three million pounds of king mackerel a year and haven’t met their quota in many years. They will reach their quota this year even with the Gulf fishermen out of work due to the oil spill. More on that in a minute. If the recreational fishermen kill three million pounds that would really surprise me. Each year the tournaments produce kills in the 120,000-pound range. When we factor the extra fish we harvest either to eat, give away, or die due to a bad release, our take totals somewhere around 300,000 pounds. Do you really believe after us and the commercials there are enough recreational fisher people who target kings that would justify moving the quota up? Didn’t think so. What this does tell us however, is the fact that we have done a tremendous job of making sure this fishery remains viable and healthy. For that you are to be commended. We have been stewards of the sea showing that if you leave sportsmen alone they will make sure the resource remains healthy. We are not out of the woods
yet. No one knows the effect the oil spill will have on our stocks. I’m assuming that pelagics have moved because we have not seen any large concentration of dead fish of any species. However, what about the spawning season? We know there are great concerns for our tuna stock because they spawn in mid winter in the Gulf. Our kings spawn in June and July. I would assume that both spawns are history and have requested that fishery managers

No one knows the effect the oil spill will have on our stocks.” be prepared to do their studies as quickly as possible but the king mackerel population study needs to be done within the next two years. We have age model samples done at a lot of our events to ensure every year age group is accounted for. We will insist that be done again and the feds must ensure that BP pays for all the necessary studies. My immediate concern, and I have let the feds know, is the huge increase of commercial fishermen in the king mackerel

fishery. We have always been friendly with commercial king fishermen and they with us. They provide us with a wealth of information especially at tournament time. We are the perfect model of co-operation and have worked well together. Now we have been over run with commercials from other fisheries that have been closed or had quotas severely cut. My biggest concerns are that these new entrants will drive the value of king mackerel down because they could flood the market. Second, we have a lot of commercial friends in the Carolinas who by the time they start fishing the commercial quota could have been reached. Also, we could over fish the Atlantic stock if the Gulf commercial fishermen can’t fish. Finally, where did these newbies into the king mackerel fishery get their license? I’m not chastising these fisher people, they need to make a living too. However, for twenty years the commercial king mackerel fishermen and the SKA fishermen have worked hard to bring back the stocks after their demise in the early eighties and we’ve done a remarkable job. Our stocks are the healthiest they’ve ever been and we will do whatever it takes to keep it that way. I’m sure you’ll agree. The feds should do whatever it takes to ensure that our commercial friends are taken care of and the newbies watched like a hawk. But come on, be serious, raise the quota? Yamaha Provides a Fantasy Playground to Wring Out Their New V6 Offshore Outboards
One
of the perks that goes with being a fishing and boating writer are invitations to test boats and engines which, on occasion, take me to exotic locales. A few years back a yachting magazine sent me to Australia to test sportfish yachts and the trip included three days of fishing for black marlin on the Great Barrier Reef. The latest test site might not have been quite as far away, but it was beautiful nonetheless and certainly fit the bill for the mix of boats and engines offered for perusal. Yamaha invited a select group of editors and boating writers to Hawks Cay Resort in the beautiful Florida Keys where the beautiful jade-colored waters of the flats abut the dark blue waters of the Gulf Stream all in the space of a few miles. The only downside was the test time was mid June and the temperature was more like mid August with daytime highs pushing the 100° mark. We were there to get some real world experience with Yamaha’s next generation Offshore Series four-stroke outboards and toward that end they had a variety of 6
boats rigged and ready to run. I introduced you to these engines in the January 2010 issue of Angler. On my way to the Nationals in Biloxi I stopped at Yamaha’s test facility in Birmingham, Alabama for the formal press introduction and to be among the first to actually drive a boat powered by them. Unfortunately, there is no ocean in Birmingham and the Tennessee River is a poor substitute for true sea conditions. The one thing that made the river interesting was that it was in flood stage and dodging
the floating logs and branches provided an air of danger to the test rides. The brief encounters with the new engines only gave me a taste of the new engines, but this latest get together was our opportunity to compare the 4.2 liter engines head to head with the older 3.3 liter models that are currently being phased out of production. In the case of the offshore boats it was nice to have some extended time to run them in real-world conditions out in the Stream.

The new big bore 250 and 300 horsepower Offshore Series engines and the hot new V-Max SHO are very different animals from the original F-Series. They boast 4.2 liters of displacement as opposed to 3.3 and the larger combustion chambers provide a major increase in low end and mid range power. More displacement means more power, increased acceleration, improved midrange efficiency, faster cruise speeds at lower rpm and better fuel economy and, if that isn’t enough, Yamaha put the entire line on a diet. The new F-Series engines are so much lighter that they are treading in two-stroke territory. Obviously there are a lot of teams on the SKA circuit clamoring to get their hands on these power plants and Yamaha is doing their best to crank them out as quickly as possible and shipping them as you read this. At the dock for testing were two identical Sea Hunt BX22 Pros, a cross-over center console/bay boat with a 15-degree deadrise hull that can handle shallow water and light ocean side duties, too. One was sporting the F250BTXR 3.3 liter ANGLER | August 2010
engine that tipped the scales at 609 lbs and the other was powered by the F250XCA 4.2 liter outboard weighing in at 558 lbs. The boats were identical, except for graphics, and the engines were installed in the same mounting positions. The 3.3 liter was equipped with a 14-½ x 21 stainless prop and the 4.2 liter was turning a 15-¼ x 19 stainless wheel for the tests. I ran both boats with three adults on board and similar fuel loads starting with the 3.3 liter, which was no slouch. After all, 250 horses is a lot of power on a 22’ bay boat. The hole shot was nothing to write home about taking five seconds to get on plane and 7-½ seconds to hit 30 mph. At 3000 rpm the boat was only making 21.1 mph while getting 4.5 miles from a gallon of gas. From 30 mph up, the 3.3 liter ran very well pushing the boat to top speed of 55 mph at 6100 rpm producing 2.59 mpg. All in all, it was a very nice package and a neat little boat that fits the niche for a wide range of fishing areas. Back to the dock, off boat one and onto boat two with the 4.2 liter, and back out to the ocean side of the island. Putting along the new V6 has a pleasing pulsing sound like it was just waiting for me to put the hammer down so it could show me what it had. I didn’t have to wait long. From a standing stop I mashed the throttle and the big bore pushed the boat onto plane in under four seconds, almost half the time of the 3.3 liter. It came on plane so fast I hardly noticed the bow rise because as soon as it started lifting, the boat leveled out

and was cranking hard making it to 30 in 6.6 seconds. The initial burst of speed was startling compared to the old F-Series, a welcomed performance enhancement that is sure to make a lot of boaters smile. the new engines compared with the F350’s and you’ll see why shortly. The F350 boat took 4.7 seconds to get on plane and 7.84 seconds to crack 30 mph while the F300 was on plane one second faster and 1.65 second quicker to 30. Interested yet? The F350 boat has a top end of 70.5 mph getting 0.71 mpg and its F300 equipped sister topped out a hair under 65 mph at 0.84 mpg. If repositioning the engines and playing with props does what has been predicted the top end performance will be very close indeed. At 3000 rpm the F350 boat was making 27.4 mph at 1.12 mpg while the F300 was making 28.6 mph at 1.49 mpg. The smaller engines were faster by a mile per hour and more fuel efficient by 25%. Similar results were found at 3500 rpm, which is a nice, easy cruising speed. The F350s hit 35.2 mph at 1.08 mpg and the F300’s were faster at 36.2 mph with a considerably more economical fuel consumption rate providing 1.40 mpg or about 28% better. As the speed and rpm increase from here, the speed and fuel consumption differences narrow—those extra two cylinders per motor do have some advantages, but the F300s hang tough on speed and remain more economical by as much as 18%, even at 5500 rpm. At wide open throttle, the F300s were doing 64.7 mph at 5950 rpm, within one mile per hour of the F350 at 5500 rpm, but it still maintained a 9% edge in fuel economy. The driving impressions are
equally interesting. When you get behind the helm of the F300 equipped 39SF there are things you notice right away. The boat feels more nimble, it is on plane in a snap and the engines hold it on plane at ridiculously low speeds—I’m talking down into the low teens. The hull seemed unburdened with less weight on the transom and able to handle an amazing amount of engine trim at high speeds without cavitation and with no need to touch the trim tabs except to level the boat if you have an uneven load. Running up to full speed I had the engines trimmed about onethird of the way up, but was told to keep raising the engines. The
higher they were lifted, the faster the boat went with no bow rise and with no tendency to porpoise or other bad behavior. These lighter engines work extremely well with the two-step hull to keep a cushion of air underneath the boat reducing surface friction while maintaining a positive feel as we blasted along in mild chop. The boat remained responsive to input from the helm without hesitation. Running at such a level attitude you might expect the boat to be wet, but we remained dry even when we had a strong breeze blowing over the starboard bow as I quartered into the chop. The next day we fished the boat in the Stream in larger seas and it
was an absolute joy. You could tell Neber was extremely pleased with the performance of the package. Considering he was Mr. AntiStep, Contender did a fantastic job with all of its new step hull models which culminated in this great boat. If I win the lottery, the first thing I plan to do is buy a Contender 39SF with three F300s. It’s that impressive and its already superb sea handling capabilities are further enhanced by the new engines. The last boat I had a chance to try was a brand new, as in hull #1, Pathfinder bay skiff with a step hull. It was powered by the V-Max SHO, a 250hp version of the 4.2 liter block with some modifications to make it a shallow water warrior. It has a 20’ shaft and a racy lower unit profile, a different exhaust system that gives it a throatier sound both when idling and under acceleration. And speaking of acceleration, this baby winds up fast—really fast! This is Yamaha’s bass boat motor aimed at taking on the competition’s two-stroke outboards in a market where two-strokes still rule the roost. It has been getting rave reviews for its acceleration, top end and overall weight, which is actually lighter than some of the twostrokes. I hope this information will help you get a better handle on the new F-Series Offshore Outboards from Yamaha and separate some of the rumor from fact. They are quite an achievement and are sure to carry on the legacy of Yamaha four-stroke performance and reliability. ■

boats participated in the 2010 Mercury/ SeaVee Pompano Beach Saltwater Slam held on June 12 at the Hillsboro Inlet Park. Like the earlier Saltwater Shootout, teams could weigh up to ten fish for points towards the overall tournament win. You can 12

weigh up to four of each species– Kingfish, Dolphin, Blackfin Tuna, Cobia or Wahoo. There are dozens of ways to cash a check in this event. Check out the payouts on the following pages. Chuck Fischer’s Shock Wave team took home top team honors as they weighed in four kingfish, two blackfin tuna and a cobia totaling 133.05 pounds. The 2nd Place Team, Ron Mitchell’s Bandit, brought in a total of 129.56 pounds in four kingfish, just a few pounds shy of 1st place. Seapremacy landed in 3rd place with 126.78 pounds, Kimbuktu placed in 4th with 124.79 pounds and Wet Hooker took home 5th place with 117.13 pounds.
The heaviest fish weighed in this year’s tournament was the 53.95 pound kingfish caught on the Bandit, captained by two-time SKA Angler of the Year, Ron Mitchell. Following Bandit in the heaviest fish category was Alli Cat with a 45.84 pound cobia. Rounding out the top three was another SKA team, Lance Irvine’s Young Guns, with a 40.49 pound kingfish. The Bandit fished all day off of Jupiter. On board with Ron were teammates Jeff Silverthorne, Dave Faircloth, Fernandez Jones, and Ryan Lee. Early in the day they caught a kingfish and had one cut in half by a shark at the boat but overall fishing was slow. Around noon everyone on board was bug-

ging Mitchell to move to a different location but he told them, “In fifteen minutes a fifty-pounder is going to swim by the boat and we are going to be here to catch it.” Fifteen minutes later, just as predicted, something ate a runner fished way back in their spread and took off. Mitchell, who hasn’t touched a rod in years, leaped up and grabbed the rod out of the T-top. In the process, he almost knocked himself out when his head hit one of the rod holders attached to the top. “I have never had a fish take line off of a reel like this fish did!” said Mitchell. “In just a few seconds the reel was empty. Somehow Jeff was able to aim the boat at the fish and get it on plane; otherwise the ANGLER | August 2010

big king would still be on its way to Bermuda.” In addition to their fifty-four pounder, the Bandit team would carry a 31.39, a 25.32 and an 18.90 pound king to the Hillsboro Inlet scales. Believe it or not, this is the first major SKA sanctioned event that Mitchell has the largest fish. He has had numerous top ten finishes but never a tournament win. The Bandit also took home top SKA honors for their monster king. Mitchell and his teammates cleaned house, collecting over $26,000 in prize money. Lance Irvine, fishing with his son Houston, Max Irvine and Charlie Fredrich, on the Young Guns, the Irvine’s Mercury powered Fountain, also started the day fishing way north of Hillsboro Inlet. This team has done well in the past in Pompano, winning over $100,000 in 2007. Lance told me that they ran up to the Juno ledge where he had heard of several decent fish caught earlier in the week. They were able to catch some bonito and a couple 20 pound kingfish but nothing bigger. About 11:30 Irvine decided to move further north to an area east of Jupiter inlet where they put up a kite and, with an offshore breeze, drifted east. At around

1:00 the fish turned on and they caught twelve nice kings including their 40.49 pound smoker that ate a goggle eye fished on a kite in eightysix feet of water. Their big fish along with three other kings would earn the Young Guns seventh place in the tournament and a check for $7,500. Houston would
take home the Top SKA Junior award as well as the $500 Mercury Scholarship check that goes to the highest finishing SKA junior fishing in a Mercury powered boat. Lance, who owns Atlantic Boat Rentals in Pompano, has fished SKA events for the past several years, is on the M Mercury Pro Team, and is also sponsored by Ra Raymarine. The third and fourth pl place finishers were no not SKA members, but th the fifth largest king, a 337.59 pound fish, was ccaught by Jason and E Erik Sonnenberg and C Carlos Suche, fishing oon their three-day-old 333’ Contender boat, the Blue Brothers. is equipped with a pair of the new 300hp Yamaha outboards that everyone has been waiting to see. The sixth largest kingfish was the 37.42 that David Wayt skipper of the Wayt-N-Sea, his Mercury powered Fountain, carried to the scales. Other SKA members’ notable awards went to Capt. Dick Russell on the Brute Dusky for weighing the largest dolphin and Pam Kalil from the Spiced Rum III team for her second place finish for the Top Lady prize. Eddie Mitchell finished second in the Junior Angler competition and his teammate Clay Harris took home the second place award in the Pee Wee angler category. Both fished on the Liquid High. No one cashed in on the tournament’s biggest attraction, the Kay Dee Dubya Jackpot Calcutta worth $71,455. One team did bring a Kingfish, Dolphin, and the only Wahoo weighed in the tournament to the scale, but team Cheese & Cracker’s dolphin did not meet the minimum ten-pound requirement. Since the Jackpot was not claimed, the pot will roll over to the next Bluewater Movement event, August 7th and is estimated to top $80,000. If no one cashes in there, next year’s Pompano Shootout could see a $100,000 KDW purse. Even though they didn’t weigh a fish at the Slam, Steve Glanz and his crew on the Skin Deep held on to their lead and captured the Division 10 championship race. They caught a 54.78 in Key West, a 56.65 at the Pompano Shootout and a 33.50 in Palm Beach to end a with a 144.93 point total. The Bandit finished in second with a three fish total of 133.87 and Bill Wummer’s Spiced Rum III finished in third with 94.72 points. Mercury Marine has good news for boaters working in the oil-slicked waters of the Gulf. Mercury Marine and Quicksilver propellers for engines 40 hp and higher feature the Flo-Torq hub system with a Delrin sleeve. Delrin, unlike conventional rubber, is resistant to the effects of oil. Running engines with Delrin hubs in oil-polluted waters has not been demonstrated to shorten the life of the propeller. While Mercury engines 40 hp and higher are equipped with Delrin hubs, most non-Mercury Marine engines are factory-equipped with rubber hubs throughout the model range. Experts agree that boating in oil contaminated-water will decrease the service life of rubber hub propellers. Because rubber is not resistant to the effects of fuel or solvent, exposing rubber-hub propellers to oil can soften and weaken the rubber, eventually causing the hub to “spin” or fail. Mercury recently received and filled an order for 90 engines of 90 hp destined for boats in the Gulf cleanup operation. Delrin® is a high-performance resin from DuPont™ that provides a unique combination of strength and toughness, combined with resistance to solvents and fuel. Delrin’s® fuel-resistant properties allow boats to operate in oil-tainted waters, while engines with rubber hubs www.FishSKA.com
must sit on the sidelines or suffer the consequences. Therefore, boaters concerned with the service life of their propellers (particularly those with non-Mercury engines that utilize rubber hubs) should consider running a Mercury or Quicksilver propeller with a Flo-Torq hub. Quicksilver hub kits are available for boaters with non-Mercury engines who want to benefit from the advantages of a Mercury or Quicksilver propeller with a Flo-Torq hub system. The Flo-Torq hubs were developed for boaters who weren’t satisfied with the performance and service life of traditional rubber-hubbed propellers on high-horsepower engines. In commercial and racing applications, rubber hubs can fail or spin prematurely due to high stress or the high exhaust heat generated by large four-stroke engines. In addition to longer service life and fuel and oil resistance, the Delrin® sleeve in the Flo-Torq hub is designed to protect key engine and drive components by sacrificing itself in the event of underwater impact. The Flo-Torq system allows boaters to idle home safely after an impact. At the dock, boaters can simply remove the prop and insert a new sleeve. This means getting back on the water quickly, rather than dealing with the costly and time-consuming repairs of a rubber-hub propeller. ■ 15

inety-six teams headed offshore to fish the 28th Annual NSFA Tournament of Champions and after everything was said and done, The Turn 3, Geoffrey Stam’s little Yamaha powered Contender, would carry a 43.26 pound king to the Fernandina Marina scales and take home the 20

first place overall, the Class of 23’ title, and the Top Lady cash and trophies. On Friday, Geoffrey fishing along with his lovely wife, Monica, traveled fifteen miles offshore but could only find a couple small fish. The larger of the two made a meal for the big hammerhead that followed it to the boat. They also decided to head offshore early Saturday, but still couldn’t find a decent fish to weigh. Hoping to change their luck, Geoff decided to move inshore to an area in Nassau Sound where the water looked good and there they saw several large schools of pogies. It was slow there, too. “We were getting ready to move again, and I was talking on the radio with Chris Stephens on the Beer Money. He
said that he thought that because the water looked so good, the temperature was right and because there was so much bait, we should stay put,” said Geoffrey. Chris

was right. They stayed and fished around a big school of pogies in 30 feet of water and around 3PM their big fish skied on a short bait right behind the boat. Jeff picked up the rod and headed to the bow of the boat as Monica put the throttles down to catch up to the speedy fish. After a ten-minute fight the fish was on ice and the Turn 3 was headed at full speed back to Fernandina. They passed the checkin boat with ten minutes to spare. Their king was the largest fish that the Geoff and Monica have weighed at any event and their first ever win. Boy, are they excited. I’m sure that they will be talking about their win over dinner for a long time. Congratulations, guys! The second place prize in the ANGLER | August 2010

NSFA event is awarded to the team with the best two-fish aggregate. The Bear Caught, James “Bear” Croft’s Mercury powered Yellowfin boat, weighed a 35.80 pound king on Friday and follow it up with a 17.20 pounder on Saturday for a two-fish total of 53.0 pounds to take home the second place prize. Fishing with Bear were teammates Debby Portier, David Hagans, and James Raysor. Bear caught their Friday fish around 12:30 southeast of the St. Mary’s Inlet in 65 feet of water. The fish ate a goggle eye fished on the top in the middle of their spread. Friday they caught a dozen kings and a couple nice dolphin. But Saturday was a different story, they fished the same area, but only found a couple kings. Their big fish would also earn Debby the second place Lady Angler prize. The Sweet Caroline III, Ron Hildum’s big Mercury powered Donzi was waiting for the scales to open at 2PM on Friday. He and his crew were all smiles as they pulled up to the dock. On board was Ron’s Dad, Ronnie Hildum, Robert French, Matt Everett, Mike Syrakis, and his son Mike III. Their 41.36 pound fish put them on the top of the Day One Leaderboard. They checked out and headed south to catch bait and started fishing back toward the north offshore where they found several bait pods. Around 12:30 their third place finishing king ate a ribbonfish pulled way behind the boat. Ron had the fish to the boat in no time and they headed

Tony Davenport, fishing with Don Bolt and Mike Brandon, on board the Relentless, Tony’s Yamaha powered Hydra Sports boat, caught a 33.08 pound king to take home the fourth place prize. They fished the Aquarium both days. Friday the area was covered with bait but they could only find one fish that got eaten by a big shark. Saturday there was no bait to be seen, but they knew that fishing was slow everywhere so they decided to stick it out. Around 2:30 they saw a couple kings sky further offshore so they headed east and soon after their 33 pounder ate a small pogy fished back in their spread. This team has fished together for over four years and won the FLW’s Beaufort tournament in 2006. Toney and Greg Altieri, fishing on the Nut Deep, a Yamaha powered Mako, would finish in fifth place with a 30.94 pound king. Sixth place went to Greg Peters’ RaeJen with a 29.58 pound fish. Fishing with Greg on his Contender were Benny Hendrix, Cam Harrison, and George and Brandon Sanborn. Last year’s second place finisher, the Game Day, a Mercury powered Yellowfin skippered by David Rodeffer with Ryan Rodeffer, Joe Bruce, and Al Torrans on board would finish in seventh place with a 29.44 pound king. A non-SKA boat took eighth. Ninth place was won by Scott Sullivan, Bryan Sullivan, Terry Bartlett and Troy Carver fishing on the Hot Wire, a Mercury powered Donzi boat, for their 28.14 pound fish and another non-member team would end up in tenth. As always, the crew from the Nassau Sport Fishing Association put together a great tournament. Many thanks go to Jim Wilson and his crew for a job well done. eff and Rickey Beck, fishing the Do Work, slid up to the weigh-in dock in their Yamaha powered Sea Hunt ahead of the second day field and pulled a 33.65 out of their fish bag. After a couple of pictures, they made their way up the dock to Rube McMullan’s scale. A couple of seconds passed before the scale flashed 28

33.65. They had just bumped Ken Strickland’s first day biggest king, a 31.60. The Jolly Mon is an either/or event. It’s a two-day event, but you can only choose one of the two days to fish. Of the 306 teams who entered the event, the majority picked day one while 99 teams opted for day two which proved to be the better fishing day in terms of size of fish caught. Next to the scale on day two was Keith Clapp on Team Autocraft, whose 33.05 gave Do Work a real scare, but it was a local team named Just Dozin who jumped to the lead when they weighed a 36.15, the biggest king of this year’s event. When the event ended it was Just
Dozin, Do Work, Team Autocraft, and All In, but is wasn’t the final chapter in this year’s event. When the top teams came

back to the Ocean Isle Fishing Center for their polygraph tests, they quickly learned there was a problem with the first place team. As it was explained to me, and later to participants in attendance to get their accolades, the Dozin team had come back to the tournament site on Saturday night to see if they could change boats for Sunday. Seems their electronics crashed. Brant had already left and closed up shop, so the Dozin team had no choice but to substitute their boat. However, that was a problem. Tournament rules says you can’t substitute a boat that was fished on Saturday for Sunday. The rule infraction cost the team first place, but technically they had the biggest ANGLER | August 2010

fish and beat 306 teams. Lesson learned—make sure you read the rules before every event. SKA rules and Code of Conduct are supposed to be in effect at every event, but some tournament directors add some local rules. The 22-year-old captain understood and accepted his disqualification with head held high. John Hayes caught the winning fish on Do Work at 11:45 fishing in forty-five feet of water in the Old River Channel. “She hit a pogy in the prop wash,” explained the Becks. “We chose to fish on Sunday due to necessity.” Rickey was the tournament’s Top Senior Angler. The team earned over $21,787 with TWTs added in. Team Autocraft moved up to second. “We fished Yaupon Reef in fifty feet of water,” said Keith Clapp, the only SKA member on the team. “She hit a pogy on the surface and Hootie Lineberry brought her to the boat. We got

fish was a dink so I didn’t want to waste any more time.” The Satisfied team, Allen Rippy Jr. and Lance Lomax, collected fourth place monies. They had the final king in the thirties, a 30.10, that earned them over $3,000. They were the second place team after day one’s fishing. Fifth place team was a non-member, Liquid Asset, with a 29.30. Sixth place went to Stuart Ballard, Don Mussman, Brent Ballard, and Drew Swinnie, who fished to the south. “We were fifty-five miles offshore,” said Stuart who caught the fish. “She ate a double pogy rig.” Seventh was also a non-member. Eighth and ninth place fell to members. Bill Welborne, Chuck Owens, and Charles Black was eighth fishing the Billzfisher. They scaled a 27.10 while Charles Randy Smith and Richard Williams picked up ninth with a 26.85 fishing the GotTu. 2 Dogs, Todd Dawkins, Hunter Britt, and Welsh Carson weighed a 25.40 to earn twelfth place in the tournament, second in Class of 23. When the night ended, a lot of teams got some money. All told nearly $100,000. That included 31 places in the overall tournament, twenty places in Juniors, Class of 23, Ladies, Seniors, Family awards, and TWTs. Chip Nifong’s Reel Buzz / AirTran earned third place Class

Skin Deep Wins Div. 10’s Open Class with a 144.93 Three Fish Aggregate! Steve Glanz and his Skin Deep team has had a phenomenal season. He and Ryan Carr, Kevin Ebersold, Dr. Robert Barus, Jamie and Travis Ralph, John Matthews, and Mike and Matt Shramko, scaled three fish totaling 144.93 points to earn the top slot in SKA’s Division 10. The events included Key West where the team earned 54.78 points. They then fished Jamie Bunn’s tournament where they scaled a first place 56.65. Next came the Palm Beach 440 where they scaled a 33.50 to end their three fish aggregate. That’s two fish that made the 50-pound Club also. The team will now go to the Nationals on the SKA and its sponsors. But it doesn’t end there, the Skin Deep is still fishing the Pros and are currently in ninth place with four wildcard and two fixed events still to come. This is one great season for the Skin Deep
team. Skin Deep is a Yamaha powered Invincible. 1st OPEN CLASS This is the second largest three fish aggregate in the Division since 2001. Only Lured Away topped that in 2006 with a 157.90 aggregate. Our 2009 Angler of the Year, Ron Mitchell is also fishing the Pros but used Division 10 for his wildcard Pro events. Mitchell and Jeff Silverthorne, Jim Patchett, Stephen Cooper, Mike Penny, Curt Johnson, Ryan Lee, Jamie Fortwangler, Jason Powell, and Fernandez Jones, earned 133.87 points. They include a 38.06 in Key West, a 41.86 in Palm Beach, and ended with a winning 53.95 in the Pompano Slam. Yes,

ith cash prizes in sixteen different species and two jackpots, more than four hundred weekend anglers showed up to claim their share of the booty. Also at stake was a 21’ Yamaha powered Contender boat with a Loadmaster Trailer. Every entrant who weighed a legal fish had a portion of their rodeo ticket torn off at the time they weighed their catch and placed in a drum. Jerre Brumbelow could not make the awards because he was a part of a Fourth of July block party for his neighborhood. His ticket was the one that was drawn out of the drum by Gene Fox who helps produce the Alabama Deep Sea Rodeo and was in town to help us out. When I called Jerre I left a message, but just after we left the Rodeo site at Metropolitan Park he called me back and got the great news. We made arrangements to have him pick up the boat on Tuesday. Jerre didn’t win in a category, but did weigh a .98 pound Whiting on Saturday afternoon at 1:33. That’s one great Whiting and who would ever have thought that a $45,000 boat, motor, trailer package could be won like that? But that’s the format of the Rodeo! Getting ready to fish the Rodeo, Jerre went to the launch ramp and found out his boat would not run. He enlisted the help of friend, Fred Britt, who joined him in fishing the event. Fred quickly got his boat ready, made the deal to split any prizes they won, and off they went. I had also asked Jerre where he heard about the Rodeo and he said, “Several places.” He went over to the St. Marys tournament the week before because he knew Terry Adkins and he was to help the Rotary Club cook and serve food for the fishermen in attendance. It was there he heard me talk about the Rodeo on stage and made his and Fred’s final decision to get a ticket. After the Rodeo scales closed at 3:30 Saturday afternoon, $52,450 worth of checks were written for Avery McCormick came to the scales looking lovely and weighed a nice bream. 36
Chaser prevailed in the Kingfish Jackpot with a 46.83 pound king. Garrett Tidwell, Victoria Price, Bob Price, and Tim Price fish a Mercury powered Boston Whaler.

the six o’clock awards. Some fisher people won or placed in more that just one category. For instance, Preston Clark from Palatka weighed the biggest Largemouth Bass (9.86 pounds) of the event on Friday to win the category plus picked up the $250 Daily Prize. Then he came back on Saturday and weighed the biggest Catfish of the event, a 10.40 plus picked up another Daily Prize of $250. That equates to $2,500.00. That’s how you fish a rodeo.
Another big winner was Tim Price who won the Kingfish Division for $1,000 plus the $250 daily prize for biggest king. He and his dad Bob, daughter Victoria, and junior Garrett Tidwell left out of St. Augustine expecting bad seas. Tim fishes a Mercury powered 22-foot Boston Whaler. “We ran out twenty-eight miles till we found 80° water,” Tim explained. “The seas never got over one foot. At a little after one o’clock, we hooked up to the winning 46.38.

I grabbed the rod, but shortly into the fifteen-minute fight, I slipped on the deck but managed to hand the rod to dad. He finished it up. When she hit the deck, we knew this was the biggest [kingfish] of our career.” Tim went on to tell me that this was a very special day for him. When he was young and fishing with his dad off the jetties or anywhere else they could, he had told him that someday he would have a boat and they would fish offshore waters. to catch up some Menhaden, which was a category. Together they took first and second place plus the second day Daily for the species. That’s $1,750.00. Another smart call came from Christine Rodenbaugh. She does the graphic work for Angler magazine. She went to the Vilano pier on Friday morning for lines in at 6am. She bagged a 1.14 Whiting, which won her $200 for third place. That equated to $100 per hour for time spent fishing. She was done at 8am. Kenny Crawford’s Crawfish team weighed a king and a ’cuda, but got checks for menhaden! This 32.90 king was just In other categories, Roland outside the money. We were equally impressed with the Sheepshead category where Leroy Holloway bagged a 5.72. Then Denise Williams scaled a 5.64 and Scott Spivey earned a third for a 5.44. That’s some big Sheepshead! I truly expected to see bigger Barracuda after a lot of fisher people told me that they saw huge barracuda in the St. The Monster Energy Team brought this nice 30.42 to the scales. When you look at the weather, it was really nasty, but still fishable. The time these and the other king mackerel fishermen put in surely paid off. Over $15,000 was paid out to the top four and one in Class of 23. That was a one hundred percent payback plus. Robert Bishop, John Peiffer, Kristen Bishop, and Brian Ferrell fished on the Fishbuster and won the Class of 23 on their Mercury powered Bluewater. They scaled a 29.45. We could not have brought a Rodeo to the east coast of Florida without the help and vision of the people at Gate Petroleum. We used the model from the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo, on a smaller scale of course, which Gate determined was ideal for their customers. What’s even better is that Gate has approved sponsorship of the Rodeo for next year, which we have committed to making a three-day event that will not be produced on a holiday weekend. ishing was tough for the eightyeight teams who showed up for the Division 4 season opener in St. Marys, Georgia, but The Reel Office and King Seeker teams still made the fishing portion of the tournament extremely exciting. Thank you, Jeff Keeton and Cal Lang for super performances. I 44

couldn’t have asked for a better script. We’ll start with Keeton who was the first team of the afternoon who came to the scale. “We caught her fty-two feet of in Nassau Sound in fifty-two water,” said Keeton who was extremely proud of his wife Vicki who fought the fish to gaff. “We caught her at 7:20 in the morning off a real big Goggle Eye provided by Lee’s baits.” That was the earliest fish caught in the tournament. Keeton’s king tipped the scale at 31.30 and J.J. Strempel added
to their efforts. Vicki was our Top Lady Angler. Six boats later, it was the King Seeker’s turn. The Langs, Cal, Tripp, and Lisa, plus Miles

in St Marys. “We were fishing in sixty-nine feet of water east of Amelia Island. We had checked the temperature at the beach and it was seventy-six degrees, so we headed to deeper water where we found a couple of degrees warmer water.” Their king ate from a smorgasbord of baits deployed at 8:45. “My wife, Lisa, caught her off a flat line,” Cal added. “It’s tough to lose by just a hundredth of a pound, but that’s fishing.” Both of these teams are first class. Both teams fish with their wives and are highly competitive. I’m sure you remember the stories on the Keetons last year when they went to North Carolina and did extremely well. This is the type of competition that makes fishing so exciting. Congratulations to both teams! There was only one other king in the thirties, a 30.40 caught by the Tall Tail which earned third.

north,” explained Wes Pope. “We found her in thirty feet of water at 10:30. We had a double pogy rig in the prop wash and that’s the one she hit. Jason grabbed the rod and

got her to the boat. Pretty routine.” The Tall Tail certainly has the respect of their fishing peers after qualifying ninth in the Division last year. They certainly started the season right this year! Kenny and Cindy Crawford, Donald Burch, and junior angler Matthew Farlow fished their boat, Crawfish, to earn points for the Pros, accomplished that and picked up fourth place money with a 28.43. “Burch caught the fish this weekend,” said Kenny. “We used a goggle eye we got from Lees Baits in sixty-five feet of water in Nassau.” He accomplished his goal: he got a check from the event plus added some good wildcard points for the Pros. Backlash was fifth, but didn’t you expect to see this name on the leaderboard? Of course you did! Ken and Cliff Murray, Mike Blackerby, and Scott Donovan scaled a 28.39. Ken is one of the most accomplished anglers on the SKA circuit and has been since its inception. First place in Class of 23 fell to the Speed Goat team, Mitchel D. Hinely, Bernard Blair, Mathew Hinley, Brandon Blair, and Christy Woodcock caught a 27.23 fishing Cabretta. Christy, of course, caught their king in forty feet of water. They also placed in this event last year. This is one very consistent, confident fishing team.

Double Deuces is back, this time with a II after the name. They were the tournament’s second place Class of 23 team with a 23.42. James and Michael Karwacki, Randy Newbury, Travis Townsend, caught their king at the D Can at nine o’clock off a mullet. “We lost our boat in a tornado two years ago,” explained Michael. “This is our first event back with a new boat.” They certainly picked a good tournament to christen the boat. “We were at the can at 6:15 waiting for lines in. We were excited,” added Michael who had asked me if I remembered him. He went on to inform me he had twelve junior angler plaques on his wall. I’ve been fishing since I was six. Now he’s an eighteen-year-old young man on a mission—to further his fishing passion. Trust me, he will succeed! The Po White Boy team scaled a 22.21 and earned third in the Class. fished the team. Sweet Caroline, hot off a third place finish in Fernandina, picked up sixth place this weekend. Ronald and Ronnie Hildum, Robert French Jr., and Matt Everett, caught a 28.00 at ten o’clock in seventy feet of water forty miles south east of the tournament. “We actually caught ten to twelve kings but they were pretty small,” said Ronald Hildum. “It was good for Robert French Jr. who had his eighteenth birthday on Friday plus just graduated from high school. We’re pretty proud of him!” James “Bear” Croft picked up eighth place with a 24.98 while Kelly Clements earned ninth with a 24.46. Fishing was definitely slow and most attributed it to the full moon, but that’s fishing. Terry and his staff definitely did a great job of putting on the event and the location couldn’t be better! Our hats are off to them. ■

he biggest king we’ve seen in years in North Carolina waters was caught by Richard Gilligan, part of the Blew By U! team. Corey Durako, the team leader, joined Barry Bierstead and Joel Brown in assisting Richard’s quest to get the tournament record 56.60 to the boat, then into the fish bag. 52

“There were a hundred boats working the Shark Hole on Sunday,” explained Corey. “I guess we were the lucky ones who got the big one.” The Shark Hole is a popular area for fishermen eighteen miles from the inlet. Its bottom contours from sixty to sixty-eight feet of water, which is what the Blew By U! fished. “We only saw one other fish all weekend,” Corey added. “At 2:30 we had a hand caught ribbonfish with a Barefoot Chin

Richard picked up the rod and used forty-five minutes to get the big king to the side of the boat where the balance of the team secured the tournament record. “Last year we weighed a 32.50 and this year we’ve got a record. We still can’t believe it!” Corey added. That fish earned the team more than $30 thousand but while we all could probably use the money, this is an honor the kingfish gods gave to the Blew By U! www.FishSKA.com

The Hudsons, Tim, Brandon, and Seth, fished the Mercury powered Yellowfin, White Lightning into third with a 34.90. “We caught ours offshore of the New River sixteen to eighteen miles in sixty-five feet of water,” Tim told me. “I caught her off a long lined blue fish at 11:45. We only saw one other king.” Tim’s sons, Seth and Brandon, shared in SKA top junior angler honors plus Seth picked up the Mercury Scholarship award. The team also picked up over $9,000 in tournament winnings. Dieter Cardwell, Kevin Alley, and Mike Lundy, picked up fourth after scaling a 33.15. The Tide Line team, fishing a

Jones, Mike Kress, and Dennis Watson caught a 32.25 on day one to lead the 200-boat field. After Sunday, the team slipped back to sixth. Joe Winslow’s Hooligan was next with a 32.00. Another good fish from the Shark Hole Wesley Tyler earned eighth place with a 31.50 with Lonnie Jones and David Chavis, while Dean Nichols picked up ninth with a 31.45. He fishes the Yamaha powered Contender Reel Nauti. My Three Sons with Terry Grantham leading his team of Chris Blanton, Austin Grantham, and Charles Grantham, weighed a 30.50 to round out the top ten. The Class of 23 saw the Hail Yeah team’s 33.60 win the Class. Brian and Austin Aycock fished the Shark Hole with half the field but managed to pull out a money fish. Austin won second place SKA junior. They won over $6,000. Second place Class of 23 went to Steve Godbold’s Minnow Bucket for a nice 31.25. Again, he was in the Shark Hole. The Liquid Fire’s 29.80 would have earned eleventh place but it paid more in the Junior Angler category. Mark Henderson’s son Crockett therefore won the Division and its $525. This was a great event that benefited the Kure Beach Fire Department. Congratulations to all the great fish caught but especially Blew By U!’s 56.60. ■

RFA LEGAL DEFENSE FUND NEEDS YOUR HELP Two Major Lawsuits - Red Snapper and Black Sea Bass – are on going.
W
hen the National Marine Fisheries Service exercised dubious emergency powers to shut down the black sea bass fishery in the Mid Atlantic last fall, anglers clamored for representation and one organization championed their cause in federal court—the RFA. Legal action challenging the closure was filed by two attorneys who work closely with the RFA and bankrolled through donations from anglers, charter and party fishing vessels and associations and tackle shops. When the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council (SAFMC) filed the Interim Rule closing the red snapper fishery, anglers throughout the South East were shocked at the implications such a closure would have on not just red snapper, which are not in the dire straights NMFS data-poor assessments indicate, but on the entire fishery for snappers, groupers and other bottom species.
They were up in arms, but only one organization stepped up to the plate. The RFA, through Florida member and attorney Dave Heil, filed suit, which clearly shows that NMFS used inaccurate and misleading SEDAR 15 data to make the determination to close the fishery. This one-two punch against NMFS is on going and both lawsuits are very important. With the black sea bass suit NMFS is wasting your tax dollars in an effort to stall rulings by the federal courts in hopes that we would run out of money and lose the will to see them through rather than address

the legality of their actions. NMFS is dead wrong because this is a precedent-setting case! We need your support through donations to the RFA Legal Defense Fund to keep the pressure on the Agency and bring these suits to their final conclusions. In the case of the black sea bass suit, RFA has not been doing it alone. Thousands of individual anglers, fishing clubs, charter associations and tackle businesses dug into their pockets and helped bankroll the suit to the tune of $33,231.05 (as of June 30, 2010). The sorry part of the fundraising effort was only a handful of tackle manufacturers have provided any support for this effort, one notable exception has been AFW/ Hi-Seas. No boat, motor or accessories companies have donated. That really says something about the state of the recreational fishing industry. The black sea bass suit is coming to a head and the RFA Legal Defense Fund needs additional help to see it through. The RFA legal team plans to carry this pill across the goal-line this summer – we need you on the team to help push it through the final stand! The Red Snapper lawsuit is right on its heels and just getting a head of steam and even though RFA member and attorney Dave Heil is handling the legal work on a pro bono basis, it will require significant funding for costs related to research needed to build the case and court costs and that’s where you come in. on behalf of the Recreational Fishing Alliance. The lawsuit is currently in a holding pattern due to the expected enactment of Amendment 17A, which will replace the Interim Rule and not only continue the Red Snapper closure, but will also close a large portion of the Atlantic off the East Coast of Florida and Southern Georgia to all bottom fishing from 98’ to 240’. It will work in conjunction with the closure of all bottom fishing contained in Amendment 17B which will close all bottom fishing from 240’ to 200 miles from Virginia to Key West. Once 17B is in place we will re-file the lawsuit taking into account both closures since they are both based on the bad data and science coming from the MRFSS system, which was deemed to be fatally flawed. In addition the Red Snapper closure is also based on the now trashed SEDAR 15 stock data. These closures are the result of the hijacking of the fisheries management by environmental extremists led by The Pew Foundation. They have been empowered and emboldened by President Obama appointing a series of their own to key political positions in NOAA and National Marine Fisheries. The environmental lobby is much better funded and politically connected through the K Street mafia. This is shown by the attempts to roll back some of the most draconian aspects of the Magnusson Stevens Reauthorization Act, we can not even get a hearing at the subcommittee level for the proposed legislation. NMFS gets to choose who is on the regional councils, NMFS gets to choose who is on the Science and Statistical Committee which processes the data and makes the analysis. We comment and protest to the councils, but we are largely ignored. The only way we have to battle the environmental extremists and their members that run the fisheries is in the courts. Lawsuits are our last and best chance. Lawsuits are not easy or cheap, but the alternative is to roll over and play dead. The enviroterrorists have shown that they are ANGLER | August 2010
not satisfied with small gains, they are emboldened to call for more and more closures until the oceans are totally off limits.” These lawsuits are not just about black sea bass and red snapper closures. They are a challenge to the actions the fisheries service took when they closed healthy fishery using data that they knew was not only questionable, but “fatally flawed.” We knew it, you knew it, but the NMFS doesn’t care because it is no longer about conservation. It’s about the agenda of the environmental organizations calling the shots! RFA membership dues and contributions are used to cover the modest operational costs of the organization and the day to day lobbying efforts it undertakes on your behalf, but they do not cover the cost of litigation. That is why we are asking you to dig into your pockets to help us with these landmark lawsuits. Help us show the preservationists and bureaucrats running NMFS that we will not sit by while they try to run us off the water for good. They might have a big bankroll, but that doesn’t mean

ohn Benkenstein and his Johnny B team certainly have to rank in the top ten of saltwater fishermen in the Gulf of Mexico. They still can catch good fish on the east coast also putting them in a very elite class. This week he and his team of Nick Garthwaite, John Jr., Guy Anderson, and August 2010 | ANGLER

Gary Hiles, worked an area in one hundred thirty feet of water a hundred miles east of Matagorda. “She ate a blue runner off a short line about eleven o’clock,” said Benkenstein. “Johnny Jr. did a great job of getting her to the boat.” At the scale the fish went 48.10 pounds, the biggest king of the event. The tournament itself has many different species categories which creates a lot of excitement. We only concentrate on the king mackerel division. Chris and Anthony Machacek took second place on the Force 10. If you’ll remember, they also earned second at the season opener the previous weekend. Because of their consistent fishing,
they are now the Division leaders. In this event they scaled a 45.90. “We were fishing in 150 feet of water sixty miles east of the tournament,” explained Chris. “She ate

a blue runner in the prop wash at 1:30 in the afternoon. We had four other kings but this was the best.” Anthony became the tournament’s Top Junior Angler! Both the first and second place teams fish Yamaha powered Contenders. Gary, Candace, and Michael Belvin, plus Brian Tuffly, and Eddie Thomas, ran the Mercury powered SeaVee, Reel Therapy, sixty-fives miles southwest to a new area they discovered. “Candace hooked up at 7:30 using a bar jack trolled on the surface,” Gary elaborated. “Yes, I said bar jack. She did a great job getting to the boat and my waiting gaff. On the scale she went 44.90. We’ll take it.” 59

The team had two other kings and Candace topped the ladies division and finds herself in first in that division. Fourth place fell to the Bad Habit team, J.R. Mize, Ken Groba, Russ Burrwell, and Jimbo Dudley. “We ran forty-five miles southeast to the Betsey,” J.R. told us. “It was about eleven o’clock when our 41.20 hit a blue runner set eighty feet down in 160 feet of water. Ken did the honors and I got her in the boat.” That king put them in fourth overall in the standings. The Bad Habit is a Yamaha powered Contender. Rounding out the top five was our winner in the season opener, Turner Loose. The Turners, Dave, Jill, Kevin, and Scott, went to the same area they caught the winning king the previous weekend in Freeport. They scaled a 38.40. “Jill caught her on a double blue runner rig,” Dave said proudly.

ing the Papotanic. They scaled a thirty-pound king. Eighth place was won by the Pitboss with Mike Rizzuto at the helm. He caught a 29.70. Team Charter Lakes scaled

a 24.80 to earn ninth. Brice Fuselier, Brett Donnahoe, Matt Seymour, Tyler Fuselier, and Devin Donnahoe fish the team. Rounding out the top ten were Tre, Dylan, Serena, and Clifford McCrummen, Jason Long, and Allen Rosser. They weighed a 19.00. All in all, a good leaderboard. We’re still waiting for that fifty-pounder to get slung on the scale, but with all the problems the upper Gulf is suffering it just may not happen this year. Thanks to the Matagorda Tournament committee for a good event. ■

Mercury Marine unveils redesigned Web site Easier navigation and updated product information put mercurymarine. com, Mercury’s recently redesigned Web site, in a class of its own. Unveiled in June, the revamped site replaces a version that was named “Best in Category” at the 2008 Miami Boat Show. “The redesign took our Web site from good to great,” said Mercury Marine VP of Marketing Mike Shedivy. “It showcases our continuous commitment to not only improve our world-renowned products, but also to improve the way we communicate with our dealers and consumers and help them access vital information that demonstrates why Mercury Marine’s products are the best in the industry.” Users will find the new site easy to navigate, thanks to a mega-dropdown menu that gives one-click access to virtually every Mercury Marine product family and service. Product specifications and engine test data are now placed together in the same location for convenient, userfriendly navigation. Engine tests, historically one of the most-visited destinations, are also linked on the homepage for easy access. Additionally, they can be found in their corresponding 62
product family section. Besides selecting an outboard or sterndrive of their choice, visitors will soon be able to view products such as gauges and controls that complement the engine. The site also utilizes shareable video content to further enhance the interactive experience. Plus, fans can access Mercury Marine’s new Facebook and Twitter pages through links on the homepage. Visitors who are unsure about what engine or prop is right for them can make informed decisions by using a pair of handy interactive tools. The Outboard Engine Selector is a new feature that allows users to find a recommended engine based on boat type, technology and horsepower through a series of checkboxes. The popular Mercury Prop Selector also projects a more intuitive and user-friendly experience. In four simple steps, customers can determine the propeller brand that is right for their boat. An optional fifth step determines the specific pitches and part numbers. An accompanying tutorial video provides help, if needed. West Marine Makes Available $30,000 In Grants to Non- Profits Working to Clean-Up The Gulf In wake of the oil spill in the Gulf, West Marine is putting out a call for entries for their Marine Conservation Grants program. West Marine is donating $30,000 to recreational fishing and conservation organizations working to clean up and protect the marine environment. The grants will be awarded to groups that offer conservation projects that are beneficial to recreational fishing and sustainable commercial fishing, while preserving marine resources. There will be five to ten grants awarded in amounts ranging from $500$5000 per recipient. Applications are available online. The closing date for entries is September 1, 2010 and official rules and application information can be found at www.westmarine.com. The Marine Conservation Grants are awarded through a formal application process in which

interested organizations must submit their proposal directly to West Marine. All applications will be reviewed by the Marine Conservation Action Team (MCAT). Those applying must show sound financial policies and management with a key focus in marine conservation, habitat restoration and sustainable fisheries. These activities may cover Gulf clean-up, habitat protection and restoration, ocean science and conservation projects that relate to key marine species, water quality, sustainable ocean use, etc. Since 1994, West Marine has donated over $4,500,000 to nonprofit organizations that support youth boating, boating safety and the marine environment. Both competitive and recreational fishermen are having fun competing for a multitude of prizes and with equal odds.

ould you believe a .64 lb. menhaden would win $1,250.00 cold cash? Team Crawfish weighed in two menhaden that eventually won $1,750.00 during the recently held Jacksonville Fishing Rodeo! Better yet, Jerre Brumbelow competed against several of the pro teams and won a 21-foot Contender fishing boat, Yamaha outboard, and Loadmaster boat trailer valued at $45,000 for his less than one pound whiting. Instead of fishing from a $200,000.00 kingfish boat, Brumbelow fished from his family fishing boat with long time fishing buddy, Fred Britt. Yulee, Florida’s Kenny Crawford had a blast competing in the Jacksonville Fishing Rodeo with team members Cindy Crawford, Robby Farlow, Matthew Farlow, Al Morris, and Donald Burch. “It was the most fun we have ever had competing in a fishing tournament,” Kenny Crawford said. “We looked at the weather forecast and knew our chances of catching a big king would be limited to the first day of the tournament. trailer. “My fishing partner Fred Britt and me launched my boat from the St. Marys Waterfront Park boat ramp with plans of fishing at the tip of the St. Marys jetty rocks for big fish,” Jerre Brumbelow said. “The weather was forecasted high winds beginning at 1:00 PM, so we hoped to catch our big fish early before bad weather arrived.” Bad luck soon played a role ultimately in their fishing success, as the boat’s steering failed and they had to use Fred Britt’s saltwater fishing boat. “Everything that could go wrong, went wrong that morning,” Jerre Brumbelow said. “By the time we launched Fred’s boat, it was already lunchtime and the winds and rain had arrived. Realizing we could not fish at the jetty rocks, we anchored up at the southern tip of Cumberland Island. Fishing was slow as well while I boated a .98 lb. whiting and Fred landed a 1.5 lb. sea trout.” Brumbelow and Britt were also competing in the recently held 1st Annual Jacksonville Fishing Rodeo where sixteen species of both fresh and saltwater fish could be weighed in to win big prizes and cash. But more importantly, weighed in species produced a drawing ticket for the angler and a chance to win the Contender, Yamaha, and Loadmaster boating package. “We decided not to fish on Saturday because of the weather and drove to Jacksonville’s Metropolitan Park to weigh in our whiting and sea trout,” Jerre Brumbelow said. “We wanted our chance at winning the boat pack-
age. We actually stayed around for several hours after securing our drawing tickets before driving back to St. Marys.” “After the awards ceremony, we drew Jerre Brumbelow’s ticket, but he wasn’t present,” tournament Director Jack Holmes said. “Later that night after dinner, I listened to a phone message left by Jack Holmes who confirmed that my ticket was drawn and I had won the Contender, Yamaha, Loadmaster boating package worth some $45,000.00,” Jerre Brumbelow said. “I can’t tell you how excited both Fred Britt and me were after finding that we had actually won the drawing! Our tournament began with nothing but bad luck, while we ultimately won the big prize!” “We really enjoyed fishing in the tournament which attracted a diverse field of fishermen. Competitors could win the top prize fishing while from a large sport fishing boat, from a medium size boat like ours, or while beach fishing on foot.” I personally would have loved to compete in the local Jacksonville Fishing Rodeo, but being the owner of a beach store on July 4th weekend, it simply would not work. I did sneak away and visit the tournament site at Jacksonville’s Metropolitan Park

during the last day of the event. It was really unique watching Jack Holmes weigh in barracuda, bream, and many other species of fish besides kingfish! While talking to a very diverse field of fishermen that competed in the tournament, I soon realized that the Jacksonville Fishing Rodeo was designed for every style of fisherman—freshwater and saltwater. More importantly, you could catch a first place fish while catching your live bait in the morning, or while reeling in a hooked fish and experiencing a dreaded barracuda attack. And for the first time in many kingfish seasons, barracuda attacks are now welcome by fishermen. The popular event also attracted a diverse field of sponsors as well. For

Plans are already being made for next year’s event which will definitely grow in popularity with its unique family and competitive format. ■

Jill Turner caught their biggest king on the Turner Loose at 12:30 in 155 feet of water 130 miles east of Freeport. “We prefished the area so we didn’t have to do a lot of running,” said Jill. “Seas were two to four feet but it was still a comfortable trip. We caught four fish altogether.” Turner Loose has been a regular on the
SKA trail and has qualified every year for the big show at the end of the year. Chris Machacek is another of the Texas contingent that is capable of winning any event they enter. This trip they earned second place aggregate but caught the biggest king in the tournament, the 48.14, and backed it up with a 40.06. They fish a Yamaha powered www.FishSKA.com

The McCrummens, Tre, Serena, Dylan, Clifford, and Jennifer Long, caught several fish, but it was their 45.10 and 38.05 that earned them third place honors. “We were fiftyfive miles southeast of Freeport fishing in 162 feet of water,” said Cliff who caught the 45. “She hit a blue runner in the prop wash at 3:15. It was a pretty good trip.” Dylan earned second place

They scaled a 36.07 and a 35.08. “Jose caught the biggest king 81 miles east in 150 feet of water,” explained Platt who organized the tournament. “She ate a blue runner on a medium line.” They also caught a very nice Wahoo. The Terminator team with a 70.06 aggregate captured sixth place. Gary and Linda Hiles, Shona Lillie, and John Gastien fish the team. Chalk up seventh place to the Reel Therapy team, Gary, Candice, and Michael Belvin, plus Eddie Thomas, caught a nice 40.07 and a 29.14 for a 69.21 aggregate. Purple Haze was the eighth place finisher. Charles and Donna Richey Jr. scaled a 35.06 and a 31.08. I covered the event for SKA and thought the event was well organized and more than fulfilled the need for another SKA event in Texas. Congratulations to Bill Platt for all his hard work! ■

Port St. Lucie’s David Albritton along with David and Luke King, and Anthony Oakes Jr., earned a trip to the Championship in their own back yard by winning Division 10’s Class of 23. David and his team are true champions and have been for years! This year they weighed a 29.70 in Key West, added a winning 50.99 in the Palm Beach 440, then ended with a 23.03 back in Pompano for a three fish aggregate of 103.72. That was the third best aggregate in the whole Division. The Yamaha powered Contender team won the Division last year with a 113.72 aggregate and finished third in ’08. They should be considered favorites in the Championship. Peter Weisberg earned fourth last year in Division 10 fishing the Yamaha powered
Contender, Strictly Fishing, but moved to second this year thanks to a pair of 1st CLASS OF 23 forty pounders. Peter and Robert Weisberg, Brittany Orlando, and Jenilee Pharo, weighed a season opener 43.08 in Key West, then added a 13.69 in Pompano, and ended with another 45.98 in Palm Beach for a superb 102.75 aggregate. The thing you always look for is improvement and this Fort Lauderdale team delivered and also must be watched in the Championship. They appear to have drive and determination! Scott Meitner and Mike, Chris, and Michael Carter Sr., from Fort Pierce fished a Suzuki powered Ameracat into third place with just a

They have to hold up the Division now in the Championship and keep the title in Florida. Rich Cook, Ray Vidal, Ray Vidal, Jr., and Mark Pernice, the Lost Boys / Team Air Tran team had a three fish aggregate which earned them fourth overall. They struggled in Key West with a 16.64 and in Pompano where they could only find a 12.29, but charged back in Palm Beach with a nice 33.56 for a total of 62.49 cont. pg. 70

Pamela Kalil, and Don Lamb, earned ninth in the Division last year, third in ’08, and eighth in ’07 making them an extremely talented and consistent team. Howard Tuman will be our Top Senior Angler for this Division for the second year in a row. They fish an Evinrude powered Contender. Doug Miller led his team into fourth this year on Miller Tyme, an Evinrude powered Sea Hunter. With Joey Casson, Mark Blackwell, and Brian Black on board they weighed a 47.40 in Key West and added a 44.52 in Palm Beach. That’s right, just two fish racked up 91.92 points. That’s superb fishing! Rounding out the top five was Scott Lambeth on the Sundance Kid. Scott, Jack Barker, Rick Hodge, David Stawara, and Adam Lambeth weighed a 35.46 in Key West, then earned 25.87 points in Pompano Beach, and finally posted a 29.60 in Palm Beach. Scott is a regular in Division 10 and can be considered to be a contender in any event they fish. Scott fishes a Mercury powered Yellowfin. Chalk up sixth place to David Wayt on the Wayt-N-Sea, a Mercury powered Fountain, with 90.16 points. The team weighed a 28.79, a 23.95, and a nice 37.42. They moved up from a seventeenth place finish last year. Great progress! The Hi-Tide Getcha Some with Robbie Yancy at the helm picked up seventh with an 84.10 two fish aggregate. Then Robbie Yancy picked up the top slot in the Junior Angler Division. This young man has some tough competition in this Division, but I believe his presence will be felt for a long time. Bad Company earned eighth. Another Pro team earning wildcard points, they garnered a two fish 80.30 aggregate, weighing a 37.80 and a 42.50. Lewis Rogers, Dan and Lucas Crowley, and Muller Otto fish the team. Rich Sujat picked up ninth this year with a three fish aggregate of 80.30. The team, Lunasea, weighed a 24.74, 36.57, and an 18.99.
Jason Sonnenberg rounded out the top ten with a 79.94 two fish aggregate fishing the Blue Bruthers. It should be noted that five of the top ten teams fish Contenders and the top two were Invincibles. Congratulations to all of this year’s qualifiers in Division 10! ■

points. This is a good team but like others just couldn’t get a handle on a big fish early in the season but by not quitting, pushing forward they rebounded with a good finish. I’m still looking for them to be on top or near the top in the Championship in November. They’re a good, well-disciplined team and represent their sponsor well. They just never give up which is the true mark of Champions. Jim and David Ingalls plus Cory Burlew, earned fifth place on the Inspiration with a two fish aggregate of 53.34. They caught a 27.10 and a 26.24 both in Pompano events and have been fishing with us for years. They have shown signs of brilliance over the years, but need to dedicate a season to their efforts and they would be Champions. They’re that good.
