This means America’s canine companions are now enjoying creature comforts that include sleeping in bed with their owners, traveling on vacations and meeting with their doggie pals for organized play dates. In addition, recent trends in pet ownership are changing the way dogs eat, with the emergence of dog food that is inspired by entrees more commonly found on the dinner table....

From the Editor... Greetings in Jesus! With this issue comes the spring season. As we spring forward in time, we look forward to seeing the signs of spring: new flowers, new creatures, newness all around. I am looking forward to new things, and letting the things of old stay behind me. One of the new things that is happening is the shift of the publishing company going from a “business” to a non-profit ministry. I can’t wait to see what God has in store for this ministry. It’s a new beginning. Speaking of new beginnings, Nancy Napolitano is still on her break, and will be ready to return to her “New Beginnings” column with the next issue. Enjoy your rest, Nancy. With this issue, I need to make a public apology to Tammy Hensel for erroneously publishing her article “Survivor”, the interview with cancer survivor Paige Hollingsworth, in the Nov/Dec 2008 issue of the magazine. Ms. Hensel had withdrawn the article for publication due to our inability to pay what she was asking for the piece. Due to all of my physical issues getting me far behind, and my lack of help in my home office, I accidentally mixed her article up with that of another writer, and published her piece without permission. I am sorry Tammy, and I appreciate your working with me to resolve this error. It was a wonderful interview; you did a fine job, and I consider it an honor to have been able to bless our readers with Paige’s story. Thank you. I continue to pray for God to send me an assistant in this ministry so we can hopefully avoid anything like this in the future. I hope you enjoy this issue as much as I enjoyed putting it all together. Here’s looking forward to a new season and new beginnings. Happy Reading!

Yes, new things are taking shape with the ministry, and with the family.

Chris and I are doing so much better! The counseling helped, it’s on hiatus at the time, but it helped, and we’re not done yet. I believe the biggest help has got to be our miracle-working God. There certainly isn’t anything on Earth that I can give credit to, it has to be God. Of course, our willingness to work on our marriage probably has something to do with it as well. We are looking ahead to the future that God has planned for us, and leaving the past behind us.

Some of the new things happening around the home front are: Zack is back home with us, and he has a new pet, Ziggy, that a young lady gave to us; Nick is moving back home and arriving this afternoon; Chris Jr’s doggie, Hashi, adopted me, as did Joey, Cristina’s fur baby, since the kids are always so busy with their own lives, friends, etc. So Christerpher decided he needed a wiener dog that would get attached to only him. He put an ad in our local online paper and got a free, beautiful, long-haired Dachshund, Dusty. This dog absolutely adores, and protects, Christerpher! He follows him everywhere, sleeps with him, and totally loves him. He’s perfect! (Now, if only he will learn that we love Christerpher too, maybe he will stop growling and barking at us when we go into his room). Now, with Nick and Zack coming home, I am just waiting for the day when we receive a call from Josh wanting to come home as well. Yes, he’s almost 25, but he’s still my baby! Another new thing happening here is we are being led to move to Idaho, a place we have never even been to. God has really put it into our hearts to move the family and the ministry down there, for whatever reasons He has. We are all (finally) excited and looking forward to the change. We have no idea where in Idaho we are going, how we are getting there, or exactly when, although we know it is this summer. What we do know is that God is in control. All of the stuff we don’t know, He knows, and it is all in His hands; it is all His plan. We just need to trust in Him and believe. Please pray with us for this mighty move that God is doing in our lives and this ministry. We pray blessings on you all in this new season. Happy spring!

Ziggy, a Green Iguana

Zack is home. Woo-hoo!

By Jerry Ousley

During my life there have been several periods when I thought, "I've got to get myself into physical shape." It happens when I climb the stairs too many times and get out of breath. It happens when I bend over to pick something up and feel all the blood rushing to my face. It happens when my back hurts from doing a little bit of physical work. I know I'm not in good physical shape. So I resolve to begin riding the exercise bike so conveniently out of sight in our basement. That usually lasts a few days before I take a day off and forget to start up again. Or I'll state that I'm going to begin walking every day until it rains and I just stop. It's funny how one day of breaking the routine seems to be excuse enough to stop altogether.

with God. There's an interesting portion of scripture in the Old Testament that kind of explains this: Micah 6:6-8 says, "With what shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before the High God? Shall I come before Him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, Ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?" Someone even wrote a song about this verse.

I'll cut back on eating for a while. Actually I'll do okay until craving strikes. Recovery For Stroke Victims A Prayerful Plan By Richard L. Provencher

On August 26, 1999, and without warning, my life changed dramatically. A stroke seemed to move like a dragon, raced across the sky and attacked me, rendering me mute and comatose for approximately 45 minutes. Two hospitals later, I was diagnosed as having a possible leaking aneurysm. My recovery plan brought me to a threshold—either lean on God through prayers from family and friends, or selfishly on my own, meander through shock, anger, fear, helplessness, and then depression. I have a story called "Back Then” which describes the events from my going to two hospitals, then returning home. Sitting on the couch allowed me to rediscover life. No longer was it important to canoe for hours on a wilderness lake, nor be first to chow down at the dinner table. Just to make it to the bathroom in time for urgent needs was a gift.

Walk up and down stairs very slowly. It was two years before I was able to walk normally. It felt like my head was in a vice, due to, I believe, different air pressure height. Use a comfortable pillow to keep head in an immovable position at night. It took five years before any head movement didn't cause terrible pain. I found a water-bladder pillow to be the best. My wife held her hand to my head and prayed many times at night and sporadically during the day. RX did not help alleviate my pain at all.

After sitting hour after hour unable to speak properly, lift a cup of coffee, turn my head an iota without pain, I worried about ever going fishing, or camping again, pastimes I lived for. Or perhaps being a serious burden to my dear wife, Esther. "Oh Lord," I prayed, "I do not wish to be an invalid. I discovered sandals were the best footwear, summer and winter, outside and inside. My sandals had a Velcro strap, which gave maximum looseness, since I could not tolerate any tightness across the top of my foot. Any squeezing together of my toes in regular shoes caused numbness in my right foot, then introduced a progressive movement of further numbness to areas mentioned in the paragraph above. It took two years before I could wear a wide regular shoe comfortably, as long as there was no tightness on the top of foot. After a further three years with wide shoes, I was able to wear a regular shoe, as I do now.

Streams of Life The Power of Clean Water

A cool, refreshing drink of water is something many people take for granted. But what if we didn’t have access to safe drinking water? Up until 100 years ago we did not. In fact, it was often dangerous. For thousands of years, people all over the world tried different ways to filter drinking water to purify it. But it wasn’t until the 19th century that scientists discovered germs and learned that they could carry disease through water and other media. Filtering wasn’t enough. Waterborne illnesses such as cholera and typhoid once killed thousands of Americans each year. During the four years of the Civil War, for example, 75,000 people came down with typhoid, and more than 27,000 died from it. In 1900, typhoid claimed another 25,000 lives. In the early days of the 20th century, chemists found that adding small amounts of chlorine to drinking water destroys bacteria, viruses and other disease-causing microorganisms. In 1908, Jersey City and Chicago became the first U.S. cities to use chlorine to help provide safe drinking water. By 1941, chlorine disinfection was being used by 85 percent of U.S. water treatment systems, and typhoid was nearly eradicated.

the largest role in reducing the number of waterborne disease outbreaks in the early 1900s.” And in 1997, Life magazine declared “the filtration of drinking water plus the use of chlorine is probably the most significant public health advancement of the millennium.” Today, the vast majority of water systems in our country rely on chlorine disinfectants to provide some of the safest water in the world. So the next time you enjoy a glass of water from the tap or let the kids play in the sprinkler, you’ll be able to appreciate just how far we’ve come. Water Around the World Not everyone is as fortunate as we are. Right now, 1.1 billion people worldwide still don’t have access to clean water. Every year, infectious diarrhea spread by contaminated water kills nearly 2 million people, mostly children under five years old.

In a report called “The History of Drinking Water Treat- To get water every day, women and girls in the village of ment,” (2000), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Garin Makaka, in Niger, Africa, must draw water by hand (EPA) said that “it was disinfectants like chlorine that played from hand-dug wells about 250 feet deep. Then they must carry it in clay pots that, when full, weigh more than 40 pounds. They make the nearly mile-long trip four to five times a day — all to get water that is unclean and can bring diarrheal illnesses to the village. That’s why the American Chemistry Council’s (ACC’s) Chlorine Chemistry Division is part of the West African Water Initiative (WAWI), a partnership of 14 organizations working to increase access to water supply and sanitation in Ghana, Mali and Niger. Along with the World Chlorine Council, ACC is providing funds and materials to help build permanent safe water systems for small communities in developing countries.

The women of Garin Makaka, Niger, show the calluses caused by hauling water from a 250-foot well five times a day.

ACC and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) recently announced a new two-year, $1.3 million partnership to implement household-based drinking water programs in communities facing some of the most severe

poverty and health challenges in the world. The USAID-led programs use chlorine-based disinfection and safe water storage techniques to disinfect and store water in individual households. This can dramatically improve water quality and reduce diarrheal illnesses in vulnerable populations by 50 percent. “This year, as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of drinking water chlorination in the U.S., we want to help others around the world gain sustainable access to safe drinking water,” said ACC President and CEO Jack N. Good for You, Good for Your Dog! Canine Companions Enjoy Some of Life’s Best Pleasures

The expression “It’s a dog’s life” certainly holds true for the millions of four-legged friends who are now enjoying some of life’s best little pleasures, a privilege their owners have appreciated for years. In fact, more than 75 percent of pet owners consider their dogs to be members of the family, according to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association 2005 to 2006 National Pet Owners Survey. This means America’s canine companions are now enjoying creature comforts that include sleeping in bed with their owners, traveling on vacations and meeting with their doggie pals for organized play dates. Playing With Food Helping kids learn to love healthy eating ―Let your kids be “produce pickers.” Let them help pick out fruits and veggies at the store. ―Kids like to try foods they help make. All of that mixing, mashing and measuring makes them want to taste what they are creating. ―Make meals a stressfree time. If meals are times for family arguments, your child may learn unhealthy attitudes toward food. ―Offer choices. Rather than ask “Do you want broccoli for dinner?” ask “Which would you like for dinner: broccoli or cauliflower?” Another suggestion, from The Produce For Kids study, is to use dips to get kids to eat more fruits and vegetables. Sixtyeight percent of the moms surveyed said that their children ate more fruit and vegetables when they were served with dip. One of the latest items on the market to help meet this need is Marzetti Disney Dips, a line of fruit and veggie dips for children that makes eating produce fun and nutritious. Raising Kids Who Give Back Whether it’s deciding to collect suitcases to give to foster children after seeing them carrying their belongings in a trash bag, or working to assemble packs filled with goodies and school supplies to send to children whose lives have been torn apart by a natural disaster, kids are finding creative ways to solve problems. These are just a few real world examples of young here’s a saying that charity begins at home. And when people making a tremendous difference in the lives of others. it comes to raising children to be generous, giving Here are some easy ways to help your children put their feelings into action and develop a lifestyle of caring. people, that expression is quite literally true.

Schools, clubs, religious organizations, nonprofit organizations and civic groups often involve students in fundraising efforts or donation drives, but the best way to raise caring kids is to be a caring role model at home. When it comes to volunteering or donating money, for example, children are more likely to follow their parents’ lead. The Corporation for National and Community Service says that nearly nine out of 10 young people who give their time have parents and siblings who also volunteer.

Let them choose a cause. Children are more likely to stay with something they are really interested in. Whether it’s working with animals, bettering the environment, reading, the arts or sports, help them find volunteer areas that they’ll enjoy. Does your teenage son love soccer? Perhaps he can coach a team of underprivileged kids. Does your daughter love animals? Maybe she can start a drive to raise funds and supplies for a local rescue shelter.

Major corporations are also lending a hand to encourage and support volunteerism by young people. One example is Build-A-Bear Workshop and its Huggable Heroes program, which recognizes young people between the ages of 7 and 18 who are giving back in their communities and beyond, and rewards them with scholarships, charitable contributions, networking opportunities and leadership training.

Make it a family affair. Doing something together can bring the whole family closer together.

“Kids today are very aware of what’s going on in the world and want to make a difference and we wanted to create a program that recognized their worthy efforts — large and small,” said Maxine Clark, founder and chief executive bear at Build-A-Bear Workshop. “We’ve found that the first step is often as simple as identifying a problem and taking action to resolve it.” And it doesn’t always have to be about raising money.

—Volunteer as a family to rake the neighbor’s yard, help sort food at a food bank, or set up a lemonade stand or a bake sale to raise money for a cause your family is passionate about. —Sponsor a child through an international organization that provides clothing, food and education for children. Your family will get pictures and updates about that child, and you can take turns writing him or her letters. —Set a family fundraising goal for the year. Decide as a family to raise a certain amount to support a specific cause. Keep a big jar on the kitchen counter so that everyone can drop in their spare change and parts of monthly allowances to help meet that goal. At the end of the year, count it all up and turn it in together.

“Miss Communication”

By Jenny Burr for The Fit Christian

Asking for Help

A

sk for help? Me? What’s that? Do you think that I really need to ask for help? No way! I’ve got it all under control. I’m self-sufficient, independent, and a do-it-yourselfer. Naturally, if there is ever a time that you need my help, just ask. I’ll be willing to help anytime. Sometimes, we “Miss Communicate” our need for help. We do this with our spouses, with our peers, and with other family members. Most importantly, we even tend to “miss communicate” that we need God’s help in many aspects of our lives, and in numerous circumstances. As a teacher, my students have various techniques for asking for help. Some will directly ask for help by raising their hand during a lesson. Others will approach me after a lesson is taught and ask for a further explanation. A few will sit and stare at their paper and not write anything down. One or two asking for God’s help. Then, there are many examples of will bang their pencil on their desk, and talk to the person those who did consult God and request His help in their lives. sitting beside them. Which category do you fall in? Does the pattern tend to vary? When I first began thinking about the differences between how my husband and I ask for help I thought that it was a simple matter of guys have one way of asking for help and ladies have another. While this is true for some matters, it isn’t a steadfast rule for all of them. Women can have just as much trouble asking for help, as men can.

A friend of my husband’s needed help with his computer. He didn’t want to ask for help unless he was able to do a favor for my husband. While my husband understood this, I was thinking, It’s okay, just ask for help. Then I thought about the times that I wouldn’t ask for help. Times that I may have just assumed that my husband or someone else may be aware that I could use help but that I refused to ask. Was I really being any different?

When David was anointed to be king of Israel, he was a youth and a shepherd. God had told the prophet Samuel that he was to anoint David because David was a young man who had a heart for God. For many years, David communicated with God in a positive way. He asked for help to be saved from his enemies and offered praises and thanksgiving to God. He waited for God’s timing to be the next king of Israel. Saul, on the other hand, had been anointed as the first king of Israel, but looked for every opportunity to kill David. He didn’t communicate with God, or ask for God’s assistance to be a good king for the people of Israel. As a result, he eventually lost favor in God’s eyes, and was later rejected as God’s chosen king.

David became king when he forty-years-old. Keep in mind In learning something new, such as the requirements for a that he had been waiting since he was a youth to be the next job, or taking a course, or becoming a new parent, each of us king. God’s Healing Herbs “The Season for Singing Has Returned!” This time of year is full of promise, certainly the annual reminder of Christ’s resurrection as the first fruits of our salvation and the promise of eternal bliss with him. Also, in our corner of the world that it will not slumber in winter forever. If you are in the Southlands spring is well advanced, if you are in the Northlands still a promise but not a reality. But the days are longer, the sun is brighter and at this time of year I am busy in the greenhouse starting all the wonderful annual herbs I will use throughout the summer and fall. One of my all time favorites is our first subject: Basil! There is no herb that reminds me more of the joys of summer than this one. I grow many varieties but my favorites are Giant Sweet and Purple Ruffles for color and taste. If you have not grown basil before, it is Basil easy to grow. You can start the seeds in starter pots in a sunny window and before you know it, the lovely appearance and unique aroma of the plant will be yours. Basil is considered a culinary herb, and certainly, it is that but there are some wonderful medicinal attributes as well. First of all it is a great digestive aid, so if your system is a little sluggish, a few leafs of basil will help out. Basil is also a great headache remedy. Try this for a most pleasant antidote for your next headache. Pesto! Mix finely chopped basil, garlic, olive oil and a dash of red wine vinegar. Use it as a dip, mix it in a little pasta and you may discover, in the consuming, your tension headache has gone away.

Think about that, it is what He does with our lives, He makes them much. Not only is this little grain full of nutrients, minerals, vitamins and antioxidants it is also a great digestive aid. For a feverish person barley may be one of the few foods palatable and may even help to bring the fever down. Try a simple soup of stewed lamb, a few vegetables, and barley. It is soothing, satisfying, and completely good for you. Our third and last consideration is Balm. The word itself means calm, healing, and comfort, and the Bible uses it as an expression of the comfort we receive from the “God of all Comfort”. There are many varieties of Balm, and it is part of the mint family.

Balm

One of my favorites is Bee Balm because of the incredible and unique looking flowers that bloom through most of summer and into fall. Another one is Lemon Balm, which describes exactly how it smells and tastes. New, fresh Balm leaves are great in salads, fruit dishes, and desserts.

Perhaps, though, Balm is best used as a tea. Take fresh leaves, steep them in hot but not boiling water and you will discover drinking it will give you a sense of peace and calmness after a hectic day. Balm also acts as a digestive aid, helps with better breathing and may even give you a better Next on our alphabetical list as we ex- night’s sleep. Miss Communication cont....

For a time, David stopped communicating with God and decided to follow his temptations. He began to be independent and self-sufficient. He was already married to Saul’s daughter, Michal, when he fell in love with beautiful, Bathsheba. She was married to a soldier named, Uriah. They had an affair and a child was conceived. Instead of confessing his guilt and asking God to forgive him, David developed plans. Two attempts were made to send Uriah home to Bathsheba, so that the child could “appear” to be Uriah’s. These attempts failed. So again, David made plans, but these plans were to ensure that Uriah would be killed in the line of duty. With Uriah dead, David married the grieving widow. When you read the full account of this story in 2 Samuel Chapters 11 and 12, you will learn that God was greatly displeased with David’s self-sufficiency and wrong behavior. David could not keep his life hidden from God. As a result of the wrong choices that were made, God’s prophet, Nathan told David and Bathsheba that God would punish them. Their baby died, and other things also occurred that affected David and his family. Only then, did David realize how wrong he had been. Only then, did he begin asking for God’s help in his life. God forgave David, but he was still punished. David’s not alone. We fall into temptation as well. We fall just as hard as David did. What will have to happen before we are willing to ask God to help us? Will it take years of trying to be self-sufficient? Will it take a terrible situation to bring us to our knees to ask God to forgive us? Will we have to lose everything before we admit that we need help because we’ve messed up royally? God wants to be involved in every aspect of our lives. He wants to set us on the right path to follow in His leading. He will not forsake us or abandon us but He does want us to ask Him for help.

Going Green … The Irish Way N

o blarney! We’re all a little bit Irish on St. Patrick’s Day. Across America we celebrate the patron saint of Ireland every March by going green, Irish style – holding grand parades, dying rivers green, drinking green beverages and wearing green clothing. This year, celebrate with your own fun, festive, colorful (green, of course) St. Patty’s party created by the celebration experts at Wilton. In addition to the traditional corned beef and cabbage, set out a shamrock-shaped “bread and spread” to set the mood. Just start with a hot roll mix. orget fad diets and boring food. Slimming down and improving overall health is about making smart food choices every day. Choosing meals and snacks rich in fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low-fat milk and dairy products, and lean protein is the most effective way to achieve long-term health and weight goals. While it may be tempting to skip meals, studies show that eating smaller, nutritious portions throughout the day can help boost metabolism and aid weight loss efforts. So, if you’re hungry mid-morning or mid-afternoon, grab a sensible snack that can help keep you going while satisfying those hunger pangs. Popcorn is a whole grain food that can meet those needs. Healthy and Simple Meals W

hen it comes to recipes, the words healthy and simple don’t always seem to go together. But preparing a nutritious meal doesn’t have to be hard. The first step is to pick a lean protein. Dieticians and nutritionists recommend getting lean protein from natural, lean sources such as skinless poultry, fish, beef or pork loins and beans. Protein is essential to keep the body fueled. Lean chicken breasts are an excellent source of protein, and their versatility lets them match up with just about any side dish. Tuna, and seafood in general, are also good protein sources, and they have the added benefits of omega-3 fatty acids. Research shows that omega-3s can improve heart health and reduce the risk of some kinds of cancers. In fact, the American Heart Association recommends eating fish at least two times a week as part of a healthy diet. To make healthy cooking easier, don’t be shy about using products that do part of the work for you. Using fully cooked and seasoned chicken breasts or ready to serve tuna medleys, such as those made by Bumble Bee, means that the family gets a healthy and delicious meal in no time. They can be paired with your favorite simple sides, or turned into tasty wraps, salads and skillets for something the whole family will enjoy. For more recipes, visit bumblebee.com.

Reaching for Low Calorie Snacks? Make Sure They Count

fter years of diet fads—from drinking special teas to computing carbs—counting calories is back. With a new array of 100 and 200 calorie snacks crowding the store shelves, nutritionists are reminding dieters that it's not just the number of calories that matter, but the kind of calories.

Partner With God to Lose Weight

So how do you partner with God to help you in this [weight loss] journey that may seem overwhelming or impossible?

Š By Cathy Morenzie

1. Cry out to God the way David did. Admit your inability to accomplish the fitness you seek on your own and ask Him "O Lord my God, I cried unto thee and thou hast healed me" to lead you and guide you on this journey. (Psalms 30:2). 2. Begin to search out scriptures that speak to your need start to learn what God's word says about self-control, discipline, gluttony, exercise and health. 3. Do something! Sometimes Christians do nothing because they are waiting on God. Do something and God will confirm that your actions are correct. Start moving more, cut down on your junk foods, practice discipline when tempted to overeat partner with God and just do something, and see how God honors your actions. Cathy Morenzie has been in the fitness industry for over 20 years. She is a sought after presenter, published writer and fitness trainer who specializes in helping people to lose weight. f we could lose weight (or dispel any other stumbling block) on our own, we would not need God. Strong willpower, self-discipline, and self-control may help you reach your goal, but chances are, that without God the journey or process will not be enjoyable, or the results sustainable. So instead of always getting frustrated trying to do more works of the flesh and wasting more time, stay surrendered to God. I love the image of a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire leading the Israelites by night. We have that same guide available to us still. It may not be clouds and fire, for us it may be that still-small voice, the confirmation from a friend, or the inner feeling of peace. Paul gives us the perfect formula for success: "but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God" (Phil 4:6). Remember that we have His guarantee that He will finish the good work that He has begun in us. Where else can you get that kind of guarantee! Š 2009 The Fit Christian Magazine.

Announcement of Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans Fit Physical Activity into your life, your way. The more you do, the more benefits you gain. Adults gain substantial health benefits from two hours and 30 minutes a week of moderate aerobic physical activity, and children benefit from an hour or more of physical activity a day, according to the new Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. On October 7, 2008, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, a comprehensive set of recommendations for people of all ages and physical conditions. Persons who have been inactive for some time are encouraged to start at a comfortable level and add a little more activity as they go along. For most health outcomes, additional benefits occur as the amount of physical activity increases through higher intensity, greater frequency, and /or more time per session. Both aerobic (endurance) and muscle-strengthening (resistance) activities are beneficial and are included as part of the Guidelines.

"More often than not, we touch surfaces and visit places where we don't have instant access to soap and a sink," says Gerba. "It's at these everyday moments when alcohol-based instant hand sanitizers offer the best protection against the spread of germs." So if you want to stay warm this winter, button up that coat, but if you want to help prevent the spread of germs, put your best (clean) hands forward for a happy, healthier season.

ake a walk outside this winter with your coat buttoned and you will probably catch a chill, but you're not likely to catch a cold. That's because most common illnesses are spread by germs, and germs are usually spread by hands. In fact, four out of five common illnesses are spread by hands, according to Dr. Charles Gerba, professor of environmental microbiology at the University of Arizona. "Come winter and cold weather, we invariably spend more time indoors touching more shared surfaces, thus exposing our hands to more illness-causing germs," says Dr. Gerba. "It's impossible to eliminate all of the germs from everything we touch in our on-the-go lives - but we can prevent the spread of those germs by practicing good hand hygiene." According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), keeping hands clean is one of the most important steps in avoiding getting sick and spreading germs to others. Effective hand hygiene practices include washing hands frequently with soap and water and, when soap and water are not available, using an alcohol-based instant hand sanitizer, like PURELL Instant Hand Sanitizer.

Get active. Start small and work up to 30 minutes or more of moderate activity several days a week. Talk to your doctor about what you can do. Eat healthy. Lean meats, fish, vegetables, fruits, whole grains and fat free or low fat milk and milk products are best for people of any age. Maintain a healthy weight. Balance calorie intake with calories spent in exercise. Talk to your doctor if you start to gain or lose weight unexpectedly. Get immunized. Influenza and pneumonia kill an average of 36,000 people a year, most of whom are women aged 65 or older. Having a flu shot every year can prevent not only the flu and pneumonia, but whooping cough and shingles as well.

Fitness Revolution Through the Bible Series

I

got a little excited when Jess proposed a “Fitness Revolution”. I know this is part of my own vision. I have had strong assurance that it will come to pass, not in my time, but in his time. What Jess is doing will help me see how to build towards my own vision. God is raising up people to lead his army, and we do not have to be manipulative like Jacob.

THE RIGHT FOOT OF FELLOWSHIP So here comes a rebel with a cause. He isn’t going through the “chain of command” to get permission from the deacons either. He just goes right over their heads, to God the Father himself! Who does he think he is? We can live with the unpleasant brother if he fellowships in the congregation across town. We can love him from a distance. I think he would like the First Church of Egypt!

Jess shared a dream with the brethren. She is preaching to the choir here. Some of you offered wise counsel to pray, and seek wisdom from the elders for help along the way. The saints before us had dreams, and their (church) brothers were not always helpful. Jesus was rejected by his own people, in his home town, and by most of Israel. Can we expect to be treated any better? Joseph shows us how God can guide us through sibling rivalry to reach our dreams.

And Judah said unto his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood? Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brethren were content. Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt. And for that the dream was doubled unto Pharaoh twice; it is because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass. Now therefore let Pharaoh look out a man discreet and wise, and set him over the land of Egypt. Let Pharaoh do this, and let him appoint officers over the land, and take up the fifth part of the land of Egypt in the seven plenteous years. And let them gather all the food of those good years that come, and lay up corn under the hand of Pharaoh, and let them keep food in the cities. Scripture & Reflection © Angela J. Perez

Just Believe A scripture to help you focus on your Christian life. Meditate and pray on this verse from the Bible and see how it applies to your life, or how you should apply it. Ask the Lord for revelation and understanding on the scriptures and He will grant your request. “ Jesus said, ‘If? There are no 'ifs' among believers. Anything can happen’” Mark 9:23 The Message. You may have heard this scripture more often in the King James version rather than in The Message version, but The Message says it loud and clear. Here is the original: “Jesus said to him, ‘If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes’” Mark 9:23 NKJV. Anything is possible, if you just believe. We know the Word of God is true; if we aren’t living the life that God has intended–illness free, debt free–than the problem must be with us, not Him. Yes, we are going to have problems, but God is our way out or our partner in those problems. If we only believe. Faith is not the issue for me. I have faith, bud do I believe? Do I trust that God will do for me? I know He can and will and wants to do whatever you ask in Him. But what about me? The Lord has revealed to me recently that my struggle is with those two words: Believe and Trust. Not just for you, but for me. I need to believe and trust that God wants to, and will, bless me, my family, and our ministry. Jesus says we need to “believe” many times over in the Word. It is not just a suggestion, it is something we must do! We must believe in Him to be saved and have eternal life (John 6:47). We need to believe in Him to do even greater works than He did while He was here on Earth (John 14:12). If we want our prayers to be answered, we must believe that we will have what we ask (Mark 11:24). And He says if we don’t believe in Him, we don’t belong to Him (John 10:26). Believing is not an option, in my opinion, it’s a command. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord and do as He commands. And yes, I do struggle with having firm belief and complete trust. And that’s probably why I am in a perpetual financial crises, and why my body seems to be “falling apart”. However, I am working on it. Lord, I know in my head that you want me to be whole; that you want me to prosper, even as my soul prospers. Please, help me to know this in my heart; I do believe, help my unbelief.

What are you believing God for? Do you believe in your heart, or just in your head? Do you believe that anything is possible? What is this scripture saying to you?
