Ian O’Dwyer Ian O’Dwyer has two passions he pursues: trainer education across the globe and optimal client well being. In his search for cutting edge knowledge and understanding of the body’s function, Ian has worked with and learned from some of the world’s leaders and pioneers in wellness and movement. Founder of OD on Movement, Co-Founder and Vice President of Global Relations for PTA Global, Ian focuses on many of the controversial facets of personal training and constantly challenges traditional methodology to strive for optimal well being through better fundamental movement. His ability to facilitate the cutting edge science and research into more user friendly practical exercises and awareness has seen trainers become more willing to “change or adapt” their way of thinking. Ian’s knowledge and experience of looking and listening to the body (and how to improve it) has allowed him to help clients across a spectrum of pain and dysfunction – from the sedentary to the chronic and elite Corrective Exercise in 3D For years we have tried to rehabilitate the body in an isolated manner, focusing on muscles or the location of the pain. How has this worked for you? For the client it has been extremely frustrating, as well as the trainer. How do I know? I have been in both positions. If you really want to gain a better understanding of how we can feed the system more intelligent information, to help recondition the body for the challenges of life, then this session is for you. We will look at traditional issues that occur in everyday life (back, knee, shoulder pain) and implement simple yet effective systems that allow us to enhance the body…not fix it! To allow it to move efficiently and successfully before you load it. Allowing the clients to become responsible for their own wellbeing and enhancing their ability to meet their goals in everyday life. After all, isn’t that what our role is all about? LEARNING OUTCOMES: • Define our parameters in corrective exercise • Define 3 Dimension and 2 Dimension • Principles of 3 Dimension • Create a clearer perspective of looking at movement of various complexes of the body • Implement simple strategies and applications for these complexes. • Have take away tools that can be instantly applied for clients at sessions end. CATEGORY: Personal Training (exercise based) TECHNICAL LEVEL: Intermediate PRIOR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Medium 3D Movement It never ceases to amaze me how much stress we live with these days. There is stress constantly around us; emotional, physical and chemical stressors are unavoidable. How then do we cope and de-stress our lives? There are some very basic tools that help the body cope brilliantly with stress but we tend to overlook them. In this session we will see how introducing “specific 3 dimensional challenges” into our programs will help change your sessions forever. These simplistic challenges stimulate the nervous system, improve movement, create intensity but most of all introduce FUN. To bring back laughter into our lives in this very intense society we live in is a must…not only will your clients appreciate and enjoy this new programming but I think you will too!
Changing the Body instantly - Really? How many times have you prepared a training session, only to find when the client turns up they have some challenges that change your program for that day? Yes this is a constant scenario in our everyday society… the client you had yesterday wont be the client you have tomorrow. The stresses of life ensure this. Lifestyle, nutrition and hydration, recovery and rest these are all major factors that need to be taken into account. Thankfully, through observing and listening to the brilliance of the body we can now change a lot of these challenges for our clients. We can now implement simple, effective tools that will change the body instantly and allow us to successfully complete the session as planned. Wouldn’t that make your life easier and your clients happier? LEARNING OUTCOMES: • Define the three categories that need to be effected to enhance change. • To show the brilliance of the body and how it can change instantly. • To effectively take simple tools and implement them into a training session to create efficient movement. • To practically implement these tools and strategies. • Understand when, how and where these tools can be used. Taking a “wholeness” approach, it offers six key foundation principles that, when addressed correctly, make a significant impact on an individual’s health and energy. We all think, breathe, drink, eat, move and sleep every day. But most of us do it poorly and without much thought. The less attention we pay to these core principles, the more they can have an exponential impact on our individual health over time. This paper explains the importance of addressing problems such as the effect of shallow breathing and the power of thought, through to identification of the benefits of good quality deep sleep that helps our bodies to repair and recover. In addition, the paper goes on to identify solutions: such as easy ways to balance and choose food for long lasting energy and hormonal balance. The result is a significant boost in an individual’s health, energy and vitality, thus creating sustained wellness and increased effectiveness and productivity. LEARNING OUTCOMES: • Learn how our thoughts affect our health • Diaphragmatic breathing is our life force • Regular hydration is essential for life • Optimal food and movement • Recover from sleep • A small change in each of these areas can create a big change in overall health CATEGORY: Personal Training (nutrition based) TECHNICAL LEVEL: Intermediate PRIOR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Low Posture and Pain impacting life/work productivity This paper addresses a significant issue in the workplace today posture-related pain and its impact on wellbeing and productivity. It explains how this issue is much more significant than identifying the correct form of workstation. Work-related postural issues, caused most commonly through sedentary occupations, are one of the biggest contributors to back pain, neck pain, headaches and shoulder discomfort. People are not designed to sit all day, and doing so takes a significant toll on the body, depleting both physical and mental energy and thereby adversely affecting body systems. A skeletal system constantly under load causes the nervous, respiration and circulation systems from functioning optimally. Resulting issues such as stated above impair work performance. This paper focuses on the need for workplace re-education and awareness about posture and pain, and provides solutions that can be implemented readily to bring about improvements to overall staff wellness and productivity.

Should training focus on the clients fitness or fatness In late 2010, the British Medical Journal debated the issue of whether health policy should focus on physical activity rather than obesity. WEIGHT?
Qualifications for the fitness industry For most fitness workers, certification is critical. Our workplace based qualifications will give you and your team the confidence and skills to become a recognised professional in an industry which offers plenty of work flexibility and tons of opportunities. Skills Active have qualifications to become: • A Group Fitness Instructor • A Gym Instructor or Personal Trainer • A Small Business Operator • A Gym or Fitness Manager. All Skills Active fitness qualifications are recognised by REP’s for both initial registration and for on-going education (CEC points). Jump onto our website, or speak to a Skills Active Learning Support Advisor for more information on how to be a heavy weight in the industry.
