Message from Exercise New Zealand Welcome to the eighth year of delivering a world class national conference in New Zealand. We are proud to continue to bring you the very best, and latest in the science and business of exercise and fitness. Following on from the success of 2013, we will be continuing with many of the changes from last year, as well as introducing several new elements into this years event. Many of these have been based on feedback received from attendees, and presenters – collectively we have had over 7,000 pieces of feedback on 2013 alone! The key changes for 2014 include: • New 2 part sessions with each part being stand alone (i.e. you can attend one or both) while also introducing more advanced concepts into Part 2. • All general sessions are now all one hour. For topics that require a more in depth analysis, sessions carry over two time slots (these are clearly marked - in such cases you must attend both for the session to work). • All new SUPER SESSIONS. These include the new REPs pre-screen guide, and also the FBT Exempt endorsement process operated by ExerciseNZ for PTs. For more information see page 8. We will also be continuing elements introduced in the past, such as: • PT breakfast on Sunday morning • Welcome event on Friday night (5pm - 7pm) – meet and network with fellow attendees and presenters • Two and three day options (two days = FitEx, three days = FitEx + Pre-conference event) • Gold Pass now includes three day option PLUS PT breakfast

• Option of Group Exercise only sessions at a super low rate Nearby accommodation: We’re continuing with offering low cost accommodation options for those from out of town. This year we have secured a nearby holiday park (in walking distance) with a range of rooms, and bedding configurations (between 4 and 8 sharing in bunk or sharetwin style rooms - each with your own bed). This year all linen and bedding is provided, and it’s still only $39 per night.

World Class Presenters We’re determined to bring the very best presenters from around the globe (including Kiwis) to FitEx. In 2014 we have bought back many of your favorites including: - Wendy Sweet - Marietta Mehanni - Adam Floyd - Ian O’Dwyer - Kayla Duke

Once again we’ve listened to your feedback, and made a number of improvements to the way we have put together both the speaker line up, but also how you take part in FitEx.

- Sandy Leo

The ExerciseNZ team are excited with the speaker line up this year - truly world class, as well as the new initiatives such as the split sessions, and super sessions as explained earlier on this page. Most of all we are excited to reconnect with hundreds of passionate exercise professionals who one by one make so much difference to the health & wellness of those living in New Zealand.

In addition to these names, the following presenters are first timers at FitEx:

This year we have added in an extra bonus for FitEx attendees - the ability to bring a friend to the opening ceremony, and also to one session during the conference (limited numbers per session). That way friends that you know would benefit from attending FitEx, but have yet to experience it, can try it first hand with you. Details of how this works will be provided via email after booking.

Information A- Z Accommodation (other options)

Onsite gym - now free

Low price accommodation can be found at www.wotif.com, with hotel/motels from as low as $100 per room (up to 2 people).

Can’t go without your regular exercise fix? You can use the AUT gym located in AH block. Note: the gym hours are Friday 6am - 8pm, Saturday 7am to 5pm, Sunday 7am to 2pm but may be closed at times during those periods for exclusive use of a FitEx session.

Accommodation (provided by us) We are continuing on nearby low cost accommodation options for conference attendees who live 75km or more from the venue. Accommodation is available on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights @ $39/night/pers.

Airfares / Airlines The lowest price bookings can be found on: www.airnz.co.nz, www.grabaseat.co.nz or www.jetstar.com If you are booking online, deal direct with the airline as other websites charge additional booking fees.

BYO - Yoga mats Sessions will have some mats available, but are always in demand, to ensure you have a great experience and that you are comfortable while participating we suggest you bring your own mats.

Location The conference is being held in Auckland at AUT’s North Shore campus on Akoranga Drive. A detailed map will be made available electronically to all attendees prior to the event.

Practical sessions Some sessions will require physical activity so don’t forget to pack clothes you can move about in. If you are unable (or choose not) to take part in any practical session you are still welcome to observe.

Shuttles from the airport: Shuttles operate 24 hours a day. They have a range of prices but are generally cheaper if there are 2 or more people going in the same direction. Supershuttle 0800 748 885 or 09 522 5100

Transportation:

Taxis: We do not recommend the use of taxis. It’s usually a expensive fare from the airport even on a day with no traffic. One of our presenters caught a taxi in the past and got a $200+ bill! Use taxis with extreme caution and try for a set rate if you can negotiate one with the driver.

Parking: There is parking available at the AUT. Please respect any signs indicating reserved spaces, disability spaces, and most importantly if you are parking in a PAY and DISPLAY area, please observe operating hours and pay the appropriate parking fee. Public Transport from the airport: The airbus runs approximately every 15 mins and is $16 one way or $26 return. This runs to Queen St (a short walk from Britomart transport centre) where you can connect to the Northern Express (Britomart to Albany) Bus to Akoranga Station for $3.40 then walk via the bridge to the AUT Campus.

Onsite facilities Changing rooms include showers and allow you to change between active sessions and lectures. They are located in AH block.

Onsite food Subway sell a range of items that will meet most peoples dietary requirements. They also sell coffee and drinks. There are numerous other food and coffee options within a few minutes drive from the conference. Full details of these (with maps) will be provided for all delegates.

Rental Cars: Use rate code “metro” when booking with Thrifty, they offer a metro car at $45 a day with no airport fee with 100km included per day. This is a great offer, normally airport fees alone range from $20-$40 a day on top of the daily rental rates. www.vroomvroomvroom.co.nz lists all major providers prices.

We’re paperless (well almost): ExerciseNZ operate an online handouts library. You will be given a password so you can download session notes from the internet in the weeks before the conference. This will also give you the ability to access notes after the event should you change the sessions which you were planning on attending over the weekend. You will also receive an electronic pdf of other information you need to know about the conference and handy tips (including shuttle contact details, taxi numbers, local supermarkets, where to find food and coffee as well as all the information about the conference).

Included Accommodation Options This year we are continuing with the low cost nearby accommodation for those from out of town at $39/night. This year it is at a nearby (walkable) holiday park, as the AUT student village is unavailable. For more information see page 8, or visit www.fitex.co.nz/ accomodation

HIIT for clinical populations Lance Dalleck Pg 29

Saturday 1.30-2.30pm Building your relationships with your local women’s health physiotherapists (and other allied health professionals) has many benefits for your clients and your practice. But the gap between what a client does with a physiotherapist and rejoining a traditional fitness option, can be huge. How do we ensure our clients get the work out they desire, but safely?

Sunday 1.15-2.15pm High-intensity interval training (HIIT) involves alternating brief bouts of higher-intensity sessions with either rest or lower-intensity workloads throughout an exercise routine. HIIT has traditionally been used to train athletes requiring high levels of both aerobic and anaerobic fitness. Recently, numerous randomized, controlled studies have demonstrated the safety and effectiveness of HIIT in clinical populations (Munk et al., 2009; Nilsson, Westheim and Risberg, 2008). Interestingly, results from these trials also demonstrate that HIIT can induce significantly greater improvements in cardiorespiratory fitness and other physiological parameters when compared to moderate-intensity, continuous training, which is traditionally prescribed for clinical populations (Cornish, Broadbent and Cheema, 2011). Such findings are important for many reasons, and this presentation provides fitness professionals with a detailed guide for designing and implementing HIIT programs for clients with common clinical conditions.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: • How to build relationships with allied health professionals to boost professional standing • Strategies to bridge the gap between women’s health physiotherapy and fitness for clients

LEARNING OUTCOMES • Understand the scientific evidence supporting the safety and effectiveness of HIIT for common clinical populations. • Learn how to design, implement, and evaluate high-intensity interval training programmes for common clinical populations.

Sunday 1.15-2.15pm See session description on page 17

For years we have been told to train women and men the same way, but is this true? More and more women are in pursuit of fat loss goals yet few are successful. In this session Nardia will explore the different elements that must be addressed in order for a women to experience successful fat loss. You will walk away with a new, more effective approach for your female clients.

Human atlas, where your body wants force to travel

Sunday 2.30-3.30pm This session will show you how to build a reactive core by utilizing “top down” instability of ever-changing resistance using new innovative training tools, BOSU, The Core Trainer, Plyorebounder, and Dynamic Fluid Resistance Devices; the Surge and BOSU Power Stax. Traditional weight training and resistance tools are great for building static strength, but do not always translate to the demands of sport, fitness and life. All of the following physical demands trying to retain control of the basketball as a defender attempts to strip it away; running on uneven, muddy terrain during an adventure race; holding a wriggling and squirming child; carrying an overloaded bag of groceries; moving a panicked, flailing victim to safety – require a reactive core to control and stabilse the load. Discover new strength training tools some that incorporate dynamic fluid resistance that can meet the demands of real life. This dynamic session will challenge the body to utilize greater effort, and forces it to react and adjust. Improve balance, stability, coordination, fundamental muscular movement and neuromuscular capabilities, movement efficiency and muscular stabilisation for stronger overall movements.

Olympic weightlifting - snatch progressions

Testing and training of muscular power

Sunday 11.15am-12.15pm In this session, JP will cover the background to a huge section of the training population who desire physically demanding exercise, but are prevented from doing so by history, injury, age or circumstances. Typical profiles are outlined, their constraints and limitations. The benefits of high intensity exercise are discussed and why, where possible, we need to introduce this into those same client profiles. After this we engage with a range of training modalities, demonstrating that low impact doesn’t have to be low intensity. New exercises, drills, techniques and challenges will be used to give delegates a feel of what can be achieved with the correct stimulus. Progression to activity which is more impactful can then be discussed.

Sunday 2.30-3.30pm The high-power, high-intensity lifts that are associated with Olympic weightlifting are routinely used in the training programs of other strength and power athletes. How to successfully implement a paleo diet

Low-carb, high fat in practice

Julianne Taylor Pg 28

Cliff Harvey Pg 27

Sunday 8.45-9.45am Paleo theory states that we evolved on a diet devoid of grains, legumes, dairy, vegetable oils and sugars, today these foods now make up 70% of our diet. Instead we should eat unprocessed food from the land: meat & seafood, tubers, vegetables and fruit, nuts and seeds. If we eat this way paleo advocates say we will avoid many modern day diseases. What exactly is the paleo diet? Are we re-enacting what a caveman might have eaten? (How is this possible given there are many different paleo diets?) In this talk I will explore: What exactly constitutes a paleo diet – what do the paleo experts say? What is the current science supporting eating a paleo diet? How do some modern foods contribute to type 2 diabetes, heart disease, auto-immune issues, and gut problems?

Sunday 3.45-4.45pm In this session Cliff outlines the clinical use and benefits of Lower Carb Higher-Fat diets. He cuts through the ‘bro science’ and discusses when to use lower-carb diets, how they are applied, tips and tricks for improving success rates and how to troubleshoot common problems encountered with lower-carb eating.

What are the main misperceptions of paleo eating, for example many assume it is a meat based, low carbohydrate diet. I outline a template for paleo eating that takes into account our genetic heritage and current nutrition science. How do you adjust the paleo diet for your own body type and exercise fuel requirements (or those of your clients)? I will also look at common mistakes made by those following a diet outlined on many popular blogs by people without a nutrition science education. LEARNING OUTCOMES: • Understand the science behind eating paleo foods, why and how modern agricultural and processed foods damage our gut and cause appetite dysregulation, overeating and ill health. • How to do paleo the right way - using modern nutritional science to guide us on portion control for weight loss. Protein and carbohydrate needs for activity. • Paleo eating encompasses more than leaving out certain foods and eating others, common paleo mistakes and misunderstandings. Level: Intermediate Prior knowledge: Low

LEARNING OUTCOMES: • Attendees will leave with an understanding of when to use lower-carb diets, what health and performance benefits they may provide. • What to do to improve weight loss and performance benefits from lower carb diets. • What ‘ketogenesis’ is and how to use this in personal and clinical practice. • Troubleshooting tips and tricks for improving safety and compliance of lower-carb diets. Training methods have to be fully customised to suit client/patient needs, building conditioning and fitness while respecting the integrity of the injured body part. The need for continued supervised muscular and skeletal conditioning following physical therapy is often essential to ensure a full recovery. Injuries that do not completely recover often become chronic and continue to limit a person’s ability to function as they wish. In this session Sandy will explain how personal trainers can work with physiotherapists to provide a comprehensive post-rehabilitation program which focuses on a basic rule for applying progressions of movement to help with the integrity of the knee, lumbar spine and shoulder joint. Enhance the service you offer with simple and advanced tools such as the foam roller, BOSU and the Total Gym body weight incline trainer. LEARNING OUTCOMES PART I: • Learn about a flexible post rehab solution with adaptive training paradigms and multiple applications. • Learn how to develop good relationships with Physiotherapists • Understand progressions of movement specific to rehabilitation

Isolation vs integration - which is effective

Training clients with lower back pain

Sunday 1.15-2.15pm One of the burning questions in our industry right now is “should I isolate before I integrate”? I am sure we have all instructed clients over the years to consciously activate particular muscles and then focused on strengthening them in an isolated fashion because that is how we TRADITIONALLY looked at the body. Does this really work? Do we give the body what it needs to function at optimal efficiency? Do muscles really work the same in isolation as they do in 3 dimensional motion? This session will look at these questions and apply current science; research and results to expose a better understanding of how we can facilitate change in the body…not fix it. By appreciating how the body reacts in function we will gain better knowledge in how we can help clients move and feel better in everyday life.

Sunday 8.45-9.45am CONTINUED 11.15am-12.15pm 80% of people experience an episode of LBP in their lifetime. Exercise can be beneficial or damaging depending on the client.
