THE WEDDING DATE IS DRAWING NEAR. YOUR DRESS HAS BEEN FITTED, THE MENU FINALISED, FLOWERS CHOSEN AND THE RSVP’S RECEIVED. YOU’VE BEEN HITTING THE GYM FOR THE PAST FEW MONTHS, AND LOOK MORE GORGEOUS THAN EVER. EVERYTHING IS RUNNING SMOOTHLY. ONE OF THE LAST THINGS YOU NEED TO ORGANISE IS MAKEUP AND A BEAUTIFUL HAIRSTYLE. I’M HERE TO HELP YOU, SHARE MY TRICKS OF THE TRADE AND TO KEEP YOU UP TO DATE WITH PRODUCTS, STYLES AND TECHNIQUES THAT I LOVE AND RECOMMEND FOR YOUR SPECIAL DAY.

A FEW TIPS AND TRICKS TRIAL & ERROR Visit several beauty counters leading up to the wedding to trial brands and experiment with different colours and looks. This can help save time when you arrange your trial with your chosen makeup artist, as it gives them an idea of what look you’re hoping for. Trialing products is important to make sure they suit your skin and you don’t have any allergic reactions. TIME IT RIGHT Try scheduling your wedding date around your menstrual cycle. The fewer hormonal skin flare-ups and less bloating, the better.

FOR THE PERFECT EYE Waterproof eye makeup will see you through even the teariest of toasts. If you cant find a water resistant eye shadow in your chosen hue, apply waterproof eyeliner before your shadow. New favourite products M.A.C Fluideline Eyeliner Gel $32 and Arbonne it’s a Long Story Mascara $36

PRIMER AND COMPLEXION PERFECTION Primer is essential for a look that lasts. It creates a base for your entire palette. I recommend M.A.C Prep and Prime. $45. To control shine, use a primer with mattifying capabilities on your t-zone and look for products that target tricky areas. Smash Box Photo Finish Lid Primer, $20, is great To use on the delicate skin around the eyes. Arbonne products are perfect for sensitive or problem allergic skin, I use these on myself as I get eczema on my face certain times of the year.

LONGEST LASHES Creating long, lush lashes to bat at your groom is easier than you think – pump up the volume by using the volume. If you do want false lashes to enhance your makeup look I always prefer Ardell LASHES. They have a range of different lash STYLES for every eye shape, look natural & feel light. Revlon Eyelash Curler, $16 before your mascara. Girls with Asian heritage will love the shiseido eyelash curler $25 as it is ideally suited for those alluring

WITH EVERY FAIRYTALE THERE IS ALWAYS A LONG STORY TO BE TOLD. THE INS AND OUTS, UPS AND DOWNS AND EVERYTHING INBETWEEN. BUT ALL TOO OFTEN WE’RE ONLY TOLD ONE SIDE OF THE STORY.

Today we change that; I would like to introduce you to our impending bride and groom, Gianna Dalla-Vecchia and Brendan Lucas. The happy couple will be sharing their journey as they head towards their wedding day in January 2015. So here’s a little bit about them. Brendan Lucas is a witty 22-year-old journalist from Melbourne with a passion for sharing the stories of others and giving a voice to the voiceless. Brendan has a Bachelor of Journalism from La Trobe University and currently works at The Herald Sun – Australia’s largest selling newspaper. He plans to use his journey of love, passion for fashion, photography and design to guide and inspire others in the lead up to their big day. And his gorgeous bride-to-be, Gianna DallaVecchia. She is a bubbly 23-year-old breakfast radio producer and presenter from Melbourne with a passion for empowering people and making a positive difference. Gianna currently works at 89.9 LightFM – Australia’s biggest community radio station. She loves writing and reading about love, lifestyle and fashion. Gianna is excited to share her own personal journey leading up to the special day, whilst giving some handy advice along the way. So why don’t you join them? You can start by watching their engagement story at FJORDE BRIDE (www.fjordebride. com). Now you know more about them, let’s hear what they have to say. The pair will be giving you regular updates at FJORDE BRIDE, as well as gracing our pages each issue. HE SAID / SHE SAID... an opportunity to hear both sides of the fairytale!

HE SAID W ED D I NG W IN G S IN T HE AIR WORDS | BRENDAN LUCAS

WITH THE WEDDING BELLS SET TO CHIME, ORGANISED GROOMTO-BE BRENDAN LUCAS REFLECTS ON THE BUSY JOURNEY SO FAR AS THE FINAL PREPARATIONS GET UNDERWAY. If wedding planning were like a race between a tortoise and hare, I would be rounding the home stretch in leaps and bounds. While the old saying “slow and steady wins the race” is sometimes true, pushing ahead of time in this hectic year is crucial. With photography, videography, cars, entertainment, venue, ceremony, honeymoon, MC and just recently our wedding night among the list of things locked in, attention now turns to the rings. While many may put rings on the back burner over some of the more critical elements – let me stress – they are just as important. They can not only add symbolism to an already special day, but also provide a helping hand to those allimportant wedding shots! Getting your jeweler well prepared with ideas, sketches and images of your desired design is pivotal to making this a smoother process. Whether you are picking from the thousands of designs in stores or getting it made from scratch, knowing what you want is going to save time, money and hassle!

But when it comes to rings, I’ll admit, bolder is not always better. However for me, I like to think outside the square. In my opinion, being a little less traditional but still very classy is the way to go. Why not? Rings can be a great way to express your personality and not just for the ladies! For me, organising my suit has been the ‘tortoise’ of the year – but in a good way. As the groom, or groomsmen for that matter, you want to tie the knot in style. Selecting the right threads can make or break the wedding. That is why you can’t go past a tailored suit, even at a bigger price tag. Over the last few months I have taken the time to find the right tailor, pick the right fabrics (particularly heading into summer) and work out how I can best compliment my bride-to-be Gianna’s dress with finishing touches (the most important part of all). And slowly but surely, it is all coming together.

the square and being different doesn’t hurt either if that’s not your thing. With so many options to choose from like poker, yacht cruises, paintball, go-carting, whisky tastings and golf, you can make your day and night tailored to your every need – sans strippers if you please. Racing against the clock to organise this event can be hard when added to the sometimes overwhelming (even me, Mr organised, has felt the pressure) wedding to-do list piling up in front of you. But don’t make a mountain out of a molehill. As a proactive groom I can tell you it doesn’t hurt to enlist some help and get your groomsmen to do some groundwork. After all, isn’t that what they are there for? To help not hinder? At least that’s what I think...

With summer on the way and January on the horizon, I am getting excited about the big day that is quickly approaching. As a perfectionist at heart, getting every detail right in the Happy snaps can also capture the special finishing touches will be crucial. SHE SAID BR IDA L , B EL LS & B L ESSINGS WORDS | GIANNA DALLA-VECCHIA

AS THE FINAL COUNTDOWN BEGINS, BRIDE-TO-BE GIANNA DALLA-VECCHIA RECOUNTS HER BRIDAL BLESSINGS AS SHE SPRINGS INTO SUMMER. My childhood dream of becoming a Disney princess is far from Frozen. In fact, my summer wedding is just around the corner. Four months in ‘wedding world’ is like three weeks in the real world. As coined by Swedish rock band Europe – it’s The Final Countdown!

But I’m very pleased to say that the chapel and reception have both been booked, along with the cars, the cake, photographers and band. Yay! So the next 15 weeks will be devoted to finalising all the other nitty-gritty elements – place cards, flower arrangements and bonbonniere...the list goes on. Brendan and I are extraverts. We love to express our creative side. With this in mind, we recently decided to attend weekend dance classes! This is very new to the both of us, but we feel it will be a great opportunity to get us up on our feet to learn some handy moves for our first dance.

Having a bridesmaid from interstate has meant that all bridal brainstorming sessions and dress fittings have been strategically scheduled around Samantha’s trips to Melbourne. Thank goodness for diaries! They keep everybody in sync! Which leads me onto my other three beautiful bridesmaids. They are my cousin Olivia and two best friends who I have known since primary school, Shannen and Stephanie. I have to give an extra special mention to my Maid of Honour, Steph! She has been the backbone to my kitchen tea coming up in November, spending countless hours refining the theme, invitations and games – most of which is top secret.

NOTE: HOW MUCH YOU WEIGH ON THE SCALES IS OF LITTLE IMPORTANCE; YOUR WEIGHT IS NOT AN INDICATOR OF HOW HEALTHY YOU ARE. RATHER, YOUR BODY COMPOSITION SUCH AS BODY FAT PERCENTAGE, WATER PERCENTAGE, MUSCLE MASS, ETC. HOLDS AN ACCURATE UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT TO WORK TOWARDS. WHEN YOU ARE FEELING FIT, HEALTHY AND TONED, IT WILL BECOME LESS RELEVANT ALSO.

100% MINDSET

The first step in making a healthy change happens between your ears - your mindset. Mindset is the single most important component and is often overlooked. Tips: »» Writing down three to five affirmations on what you can and will achieve will keep you on task, for example your goal dress size, etc. »» Take a “before” photo in your underwear/ bikini and place the photos in constant view. For example on the fridge and under the visor of your car (this will most likely stop you from fast-food drive through’s). »» Laminate and place affirmations, goals and photos on the back of the toilet and shower door.

Exercise is the last component and is 20% of your overall result. There are various types of group activities based around accountability, fun and edification, one being Fit Clubs. Another plus – they are free (you are welcome!), so ask your bridesmaids to join you. The bridesmaids who workout together, stick together, right? WELL IT’S NEARLY TIME FOR THE MOST WONDERFUL DAY OF YOUR LIFE. YOU HAVE SPENT MONTHS, MAYBE EVEN YEARS IMAGINING THE MAGIC OF THIS DAY. YOU’VE SPENT HOURS PRACTICING YOUR WALK, RECITING YOUR VOWS, PLANNING AND ORGANIZING EVERYTHING FROM THE FLOWERS TO THE MINUTEST DETAIL YOU COULD POSSIBLY THINK OF. You may have had some bumps along the way or you may be one of the super lucky ones who had everything just fall into place. One thing for sure is that it doesn’t matter how organized you are, how brilliant a stylist, even how much hired help you’ve had. When it’s comes to the day before the biggest day of your life, nothing prepares you for the size of the butterflies doing acrobatics in your tummy. You cannot sleep, eat, nothing. You are simply a bundle of bridal hormones disguised as nerves.

SPRING 2014

DIANE ROBERTSON WORDS | SHESHIA ARELLANO PHOTOGRAPHY | CARLO ROSA

IT’S THE TYPICAL CHILLY DAY IN MELBOURNE WHERE NO MATTER HOW MUCH PRODUCT YOU APPLY TO YOUR HAIR, IT’S MADE UP ITS MIND TO DO ITS OWN THING…FRIZZ. SO I THROW IT BACK IN A PONYTAIL AND HEAD INTO FASHIONABLE RICHMOND TO MEET UP WITH A BUDDING NEW CELEBRITY STYLIST.

I am fashionably late as I blow into the buzzing little café off of Bridge road. There she was. Blonde luscious hair cascading down a petite groomed figure. Damn! Then she turned around and I knew in a moment we had found the perfect stylist for our business. Diane Robertson is her name. Diane has always been a creative, born into a wonderfully supportive family in the wholesome and stunning Eltham. She has always had a fascination for the Arts and performance in some capacity. As we talk I begin to discover so much more to this young, fresh wholesome woman. I discovered that Diane’s talents don’t just reside in imaging and styling but that this little diamond, is also a singer a very good Jazz and classically trained singer. Diane realised her dream at a very young age that she wanted to be on television, but in what capacity? Was there something in all those hours spent cutting her Barbies hair and painting them with lipstick (this we do share in common), or the magic and drama of the performing arts? Her mum was her biggest inspiration as she too, a creative, had a way of making people feel good about themselves by styling them.

At the end of year 12 Diane had to make the biggest decision of her life, whether to continue with the performing Arts or embark on a career as a stylist. I believe her decision to follow her dream of television combining her love of making everyone around her feel beautiful was the right choice and the essence of Diane. She has the most warm, magnetic and genuine personality. You feel an immediate confidence and trust in her which is probably why she is one of the leading wedding stylists. Diane has the ability to diffuse the tension and stress that comes with the onset of your big day as she works on getting to know you. This is the biggest day of your life and this is the person who is going to bring out and present the very best of you, even you have ever seen. Diane has a trademark look and that is one of ‘less is more’, a natural beauty. She has an ability to see beauty and unleash it to it’s full potential. By this stage I wanted to book a session for this woman wasn’t selling herself but because of her integrity, I was so ready for an overhaul. ... Always wanting that little bit extra I thought I would ask Diane about her favourite products and secrets.

SPEAKING WITH GWENDOLYNNE BURKIN, ONE CAN TRULY FEEL HER PASSION FOR MAKING BEAUTIFUL PIECES, WITH GENUINE EXCITEMENT AND FLAIR IN CREATING THE PERFECT UNIQUE DRESS FOR EACH CLIENT’S PERSONALITY AND TASTE.

With a successful career thus far, her collections have been showcased in Beijing, London, New York and Singapore. Her dresses have won Fashions on the Field at the Dubai World Cup, exhibited at the Powerhouse Museum Sydney, pieces for the Australian Ballet, Mercedes advertising campaigns and other international advertising campaigns including Nokia and Sony. It is common to spot her designs on the it-celebrities at red carpet events. When label Gwendolynne was created in November 1997, Burkin realized that despite her skill set, she was not skilled in fabricmaking and spent her resources on sourcing quality fabrics. Struggling to find fabrics for her designs, she began designing fabrics as well as handmade intricate embellishments all exclusive to her label. She is now well known for her style of sumptuous fabrics and romantic-themed designs; it is how she has managed to stand out throughout her career. When asked about her passion for creating timeless beauty, Burkin explains the importance of looking back at photos and not being horrified, especially with the choice of dress design. Her greatest advice to a client is choose something timeless and flattering, as they will reflect on the dress for the rest of their life. “You are dressing to feel special, not to be innovatively different. Even avante garde clients still want to look beautiful.” Burkin encourages clients first visit alone, narrowing down what they like and presenting their chosen selection to a few family/friends. This way, they are focusing on what they like and how they feel in their heart, not influenced by others opinions of what the bride-to-be should wear. Burkin is able to stand out from other boutiques for a number of reasons. Firstly, her soft fluid designs are created for women to move, eat and dance in. “Why wear a dress you can’t move in, and when do you get to invest in having a beautiful dress made?” As a

woman, she understands the quirks of women and what they like to hide. Her signature designs are cap-sleeved, also utilizing appropriate beading designed to truly suit body shape. Burkin is very clear that if you’re looking for a sweetheart dress, her boutique is not for you; she creates pieces that are focused on individualism which can even be worn again differently, not the idea of what a bride should be wearing. Secondly, her carefully chosen staff are down to earth, friendly, bright and fun as to not be an overwhelming experience. Definitely no chandeliers in her boutique! Despite her evident unique style and disbelief in fashion and bridal trends, Burkin believes covered up backs, longer sleeves and shorter dresses will be trending in the next six months. Opened backs and no sleeves have been fashionable for the past few years; it is time for classic elegant to back in bridal style. Burkin lives and is focused on making beautiful things. Her main objective for Gwendolynne’s future is to keep creating beauty, surviving in the fashion market and launch an affordable range that includes lace-orientated pieces, and explore color. She also trusts that the skill of couture will be kept alive; weddings are a great opportunity for skills to be honored and used. Burkins’ last piece of advice for wedding anxiety is to purposely select people you have fun and a special connection with in some way; it makes the wedding day process more special and gives back to the community around you. Remember you are in a room full of people who love and support you, so enjoy the day focusing on what’s important, rather than what’s not.

ANNA CAMPBELL

WHEN ONE ENVISAGES ROMANCE FROM A BRIDAL PERSPECTIVE, A WATER COLOUR PALETTE OF SOFT MUTED PASTEL HUES, FREE FLOWING FABRICS SOFTLY FLOWING IN THE WIND, RUSTIC BOUQUETS FRAGRANCE THE AIR AND A WHIMSICAL GARDEN, COME TO MIND. I CAN HEAR THE CHAMPAGNE FLUTES CLINKING TO THE SOUND OF ABUNDANT LAUGHTER. THIS IS A BRIDE’S DREAM OF THE PERFECT ROMANTIC SETTING.

There is one Australian bridal designer who I can say is the perfect example of romance from the exquisite delicate fabrics, intricate embellishments and now the vintage decor to finish painting the perfect water colour romantic memory for your special day. Sitting with Anna Campbell, you are immediately put on notice of the strength and focus of this young bridal designer. There exudes an intelligence, unwavering determination, and a visionary. It is powerful. I was intrigued to find out who this incredible woman was.

she describes as a genius and her mum was the creative PE teacher. Dad would always be doing or building something which Anna gravitated to. She loved a chisel and hammer and the magic of wonder that could be found in creating things from a variety of materials. So how did this true blue country girl become the Anna Campbell we know and love today? It was a combination of the freedom and independence her parents gave her and then there was one very special woman who she believes gave her the desire to take risks, go after what she wanted with the idea that anything was possible with hard work, to execute her dreams and ideas. This person was her Grandmother. Anna describes her as wonderful and not the typical Grandmother who would bake cookies and give cuddles as she would much rather discuss politics and design, critiquing their school work whenever she had the opportunity. A woman of impeccable standards so much so that when she fell ill and unable to walk, she made sure stilettos still adorned her feet. To Anna, she was the epitome of style and class. After growing up in this small country town where her Primary school was run by the parents and had more teachers than students, Anna moved on the Ballarat Grammer in her adult years. She had always been intrigued with art, design and really anything creative. Anna started playing around with textiles, painting, drawing and printmaking then decided to embark on a course at RMIT to study fashion as she loved the idea of wearable art.

it involved a lot of glue and numerous trips to Spotlight. ‘It wasn’t the best.’ says Anna. As with everything, there will be things that work and things that fall short and Anna, being a great risk taker, made some pretty brave moves early on in her career. Being a woman not confined by limitations, she is not afraid of changing direction if something is not flowing as it should for the label. Integrity is mandatory to Anna. Anna’s upbringing in the country had a great influence on her range. Within nature so much beauty can be found and it is this that inspires her. A perfectionist. Anna is hands on to the point of even working in one of her boutiques at least one day per week so she can have that personal connection with her brides. The process of designing her gowns comes from hours and hours of layering the most exquisite laces and embellishment until the vision and flow come to life. Anna actually brought out a current ‘work in progress’ for me to view. The detail is spectacular and the techniques used to achieve the most unique, feminine and elegantly jeweled gowns is quite breathtaking. Something that does come through quite powerfully is the ‘family’ Anna has created with her team. Anna is the designer but involves her whole team in the process.

That ‘family’ feeling I experienced on entering her office and was welcomed to a small sea of hard working but smiling dress makers and Anna is a country girl through and through. seamstresses. So when asked to create their wedding cake, Catherine was delighted. As an event planner herself Rachel knew exactly the type of atmosphere and environment she wanted to create for her special day. Working closely with Pop from Pop & Scott Studio to create the floral arrangements and transform the studio into the relaxed and easy surroundings for her big day, Rachel was on track. As the wedding date go closer the bride’s mother asked if Sweet Empire could again help out by creating a little edible keepsake for the guests at such a fabulous night. IN THEIR WORDS: We wanted a casual wedding that was more a party than a standard wedding. Having 3 different singers throughout the night we think we got it right. Looking for something a bit different a warehouse styled with the simple gorgeous flowers from Pop completed the atmosphere we wanted. With a green and white floral wall and a flower cluster dropping from the roof the room looked amazing. Pop & Scott finished the roomwith a swing in the middle of the venue. it was just perfect. I [Rach] tried on a few dresses but wanted something a bit different to suit the warehouse venue and laid back atmosphere, when I saw the Jane Hill ‘Lottie’ I fell in love with it. SPRING 2014

RISE OF A (SWEET) EMPIRE WORDS | SHESHIA ARELLANO PHOTOGRAPHY | DEAN SCHMIDEG PHOTOGRAPHY

THERE ARE FEW PLACES IN THIS WORLD THAT CAN MAKE YOU FEEL TRULY AT HOME, THE ILLUSTRIOUS BAKE STUDIO OF SWEET EMPIRE IS ONE SUCH PLACE. FROM THE MOMENT YOU STEP THROUGH THE DOOR YOUR MIND, HEART AND SOUL CAN FEEL COMPLETELY AT EASE AND WELCOMED. A FEELING EVERY BAKE STUDIO SHOULD STRIVE TO EMULATE.

With elegant lines and a simplistic feel, the studio is adorned in organic white caesar-stone bench tops and accentuated with Tom Dixon octagon light shades, that bring a sense flair to its clean lines. Tearing your eyes away from the majestic beauty of the ceasar-stone that feels more tactile and inviting then a cold hard working space, you become visually seduced by the sudden splash of black swirling form within the Calacatta marble of the splash-back, which only further accentuates the seamlessly beautiful Italian appliances that perfectly finishes an amazing working environment to create a harmony of modern simplicity and warmth. The bake studio is complemented by a beautiful courtyard and is home to not only delicious sweet treats but home to intimate soirees for bridesmaids and those young at heart for that uniquely different birthday or celebration. At the centre of this beauty sits Catherine Russo, the women behind the mixing bowl who brings it all together. Catherine brings the warmth, brain, passion and heart to the Empire. Sitting with Catherine is like sitting down with an old friend. She has the ability to make you feel at home, in her home. With a genuine sparkle behind her eyes from which you can almost feel the pure honesty and integrity exploding out of her personality. And that is exactly ‘who’ Catherine Russo is.

Getting comfortable, Catherine settles in and tells us about one of her earliest memories with her mother baking scones in the family kitchen, she told us about her mother who was very much the creative, an influence that has stayed with her to this day. Having grown up in Perth from humble beginnings, she grew up with a sense of family and belonging. A notion that she continues to hold dear today. To Catherine, family is everything. And known as a ‘chatterbox’ growing up, its a trait evident even today as she talks a mile a minute, with a smile and radiance that lights up the room. Some sixteen years ago when Catherine moved to Melbourne, she immersed herself into the rich tapestry that surrounded her. Finding herself seduced by the call of Stephanie Alexander, from baking to decorating, Catherine had found her place in Melbourne. Believing in the pleasure of ‘giving to others’ and ‘encompassing the senses’, Catherine had found her calling and what better a medium than food to do this? Not to mention a little sugar to accentuate the impact to the senses and voilà, it was a marriage made in heaven.

RISE OF A (SWEET) EMPIRE

A calling is one thing but finding that special someone to share the journey with is another, for Catherine that special someone came in the form of Rick. Ever the non-traditionalist she planned and styled her own wedding in honour of her father, who was unable to be there on the day but made a simple request that Rick wear his Pierre Cardin silver tie – that he himself would have worn on Catherine’s wedding day – so he to could share the day with them in spirit. Touched by this sentiment, silver became the theme of the day with Catherine donning a silver inspired dress herself. She went on to tell us, years later after her special day while sitting on the couch with her husband Rick, watching Australian Idol, she was puzzled by one of the contestants. Not being able to place him it baffled her as to who it was, when finally realizing the connection, she explained that the same young man had sung at her wedding... So who was this voice... this mysterious wedding singer? None other that the immensely talented, Anthony Callea and he sang ‘The Prayer’ which was a family favourite with Rick being Italian! This went on to be one of Anthony’s most famous renditions.

solidified a few things. The feeling, the emotion of seeing it for the first time, this delicacy that represented her and Rick’s love, to share with everyone present, just blew her away. One of the greatest tell tale signs of whether you are on the right path is the love and passion you have for something, regardless of the stress or challenges along the way. Planning and executing your own wedding is not a small feat to say the least, but seeing the cake and what it represented began a journey for Catherine that has continued today and flourished into a successful business.

But no fairytale is complete without its heartache, after many years of trying and exploring all the possibilities of trying to have a child naturally, they sadly were unable. Eventually, they made the decision to begin the long arduous process of adoption. A long and agonizing process that consumed their lives for six and a half years, filled with red tape, low points and questionable attitudes of those who should be the most compassionate. It came to a bitter sweet end at precisely 7:09am, one faithful morning. Their agent called with the good news, after all this time good news would mean that the authorities had at least received Jumping back to her wedding day, her favourite their papers. The agent repeated, ‘no, I have memory of the day after the ceremony was GOOD NEWS”. They had a baby boy waiting arriving at the reception and pushing past all for them. Picking herself up off the floor, an absolute mess, she called Rick, with the amazing news. Three long months after the news, they were allowed to travel to the Philippines, to finally meet their baby boy and bring him home. Harry’s ‘home’ over there was in a small little village that was filled with warmth and love. This is not always the case. The process of bringing Harry to his new home was completed with all the love in the world. And at just eleven months old, Harry had found his place in the world and Catherine and Rick were a whole family. The adoption process in Australia requires that mums stay at home with their child for a minimum two years to establish and create a secure bond between mother and child. It was at this point for Catherine that signified it was the right time to embark on a dream she had always had. You see, it was Catherine that was always asked by family and friends to make the cakes and sweets for the special occasions due to her outstanding gift. From there, it was a natural progression with friends of friends requesting her divine sweets at their own parties. It was a natural process from the heart to create beautiful and delicious sweets and having baby Harry at home, meant there was no better time to start the process of evolving a little business. Or in this case an empire, and like that, Sweet Empire was born out of love in every sense of the word.

From bridal showers where you get to bake her famous cakes pops or cheeky lessons with the girls for a fun afternoon. To the kids, that get to decorate and create their own unique and wonderful cakes made from Catherine’s own personal recipes – makes you want to be a kid all over again. Sweet Empire can cater to them all. Catherine has a simple philosophy when creating her a cake for any special occasion, that is every day, every occasion, is unique and special. So how does this translate into the bake studio? It means no two cakes are the same and everything made for your special day is uniquely created for you with the best ingredients and with an extra big helping of love. So if you really want to create an impact on your special day, have the room swirling in a chorus of oohs and aahs and create that little bit of envy, Sweet Empire is all you need. These are the memories everyone craves for their special day, moments that will last forever.

There is something incredibly special about this artesian baker. From her humble beginnings to a life filled with a ups and downs, loves and losses, all making her the beautiful radiant woman she is today. All of which she puts into her bake studio where you can feel the love and energy that she puts into everything she touches. Her attention to detail is impeccable. An absolute perfectionist. To put it simply for Catherine, it’s not a cake, it is not a panna cotta Harry now five, a buddying pastry chef himself, or tiramisu, it is mouthfuls of love bursting and Sweet Empire have both flourished. Harry with passion, exploding with integrity, melting an exuberant young man with a happy and with love and injecting you with joy. Australian positive outlook on life and Sweet Empire has made and owned and if you could put her cakes become a signature for any special occasion. on the catwalk, it would be couture at it’s finest. From magical luxe metallic cake pops, divine It is Sweet Empire. pots of pannacotta, heavenly macarons and so much more, Sweet Empire has truly entwined itself with the love of taste and sensation to create amazing delicacies. LA VIE EN ROSE

SPRING 2014

LA VIE EN ROSE WORDS | SHESHIA ARELLANO

IN THE WORLD OF MILESTONES AND EVENTS, THE TOKEN OF BOMBONIERE WAS A SMALL TOKEN OF GRATITUDE TO THOSE PRESENT FOR ATTENDING. FIRST ORIGINATED FROM THE EVER ROMANTIC ITALIANS. 5 SUGARED ALMONDS OR JORDAN ALMONDS, REPRESENTING HEALTH, WEALTH, HAPPINESS, FERTILITY AND LONG LIFE WOULD BE PLACED IN PRETTY TULLE OR SATIN BAGS AND TIED IN RIBBONS OF ASSORTED COLOURS. THIS GESTURE WAS ALSO POPULAR AT BAR AND BAT MITZVAHS. FOR WEDDINGS, WHITE SUGARED ALMONDS WERE ALWAYS THE COLOUR OF CHOICE.

In the magical land of all things wedding, bomboniere is a huge part of your decor and planning. If you go online, it is packed to the rafters with so much cheap and unflattering items that are mass produced. There is not a lot of bomboniere that offers a personal touch which, is something that is so important to complete your wedding experience. Meet Daniela. A young, feisty and beautiful Italian girl. Growing up on the North Shores of Sydney, Daniela would rather be doing hand stands against the fridge or burying herself in a good book. A little cheeky, a little mischievous, she loved pushing boundaries. When it came to festivities, especially Christmas, Daniela was to appointed gift wrapper. Actually, there wasn’t a choice as this was Daniela’s favourite and boy was she good at it. The family would always look forward to seeing her art in how she presented their gifts. It was as important as what was contained within as it was done with thought and love. During her school years Daniela shone in the Arts and loved anything that was socially engaging opting for more creatively stimulating subjects to pursue and literature. Always drawn to the arts, with an eye for detail but more, she loved items that were unique and of impeccable quality, Daniela discovered at an early age that she had a gift in taking something and bringing out it’s beauty to full potential. Whilst Daniela was completing her schooling, she did what most of us do, and found a job in retail for a while but this really didn’t feed her desire to be creative. Once she had completed her studies, she then embarked on working in Optometry. This was great as a first job but still something inside her burned to be let out. She just didn’t know what it was. Two years went by and Daniela decided to do a course in visual merchandising and absolutely loved it. She gained great experience and was able to utilize some of that fire that had been simmering there for so long. Once completed, she got a fantastic job with Blooms doing their visual merchandising in Pharmacy windows across the state. Daniela showed so much creativity that they appointed her as facilitator and coordinator of their expo.

In 2011, Daniela had the burning desire to have her own business. Knowing how important the use of her creativity was for her soul and combining it with an important part of her culture and love, Daniela began looking into Bomboniere. There was nothing remotely near her and everything she saw online seemed so impersonal. After a year of research Daniela made the decision that something had to be done. It was calling her. When you think of beauty, of romance, classical elegance, there is a picture that immediately flows and whimsical images of soft beautiful roses, Chantilly laces, the French countryside and all things feminine comes to mind. There is a song that represented these images to Daniela and that being to renowned La Vie En Rose. And so, La Vie En Rose was born and has been trading now for 1 year. So, what is unique about La Vie En Rose? Apart from Daniela being the pioneer of creating the most divine mini Bonsai pots for your guests, she is a stylist that listens from the heart. She will assist you in not only providing the most exquisite handmade Italian almonds and honey biscuits presented in perfect packaging that reflects your chosen decor or memories, but Daniela is also a stylist. You sit with Daniela and she will go through all your hopes for your big day and from there will assist you in coming up with a personal theme that reflects the very essence of you. Combine this with bomboniere that sparkles, items tied in divine laces, tulles, rustic elegance and things that hold tender memories. For your guests, what she provides is an experience. Daniela is a romantic and that is conveyed in the finer details of her creations. So where to now for this amazing new stylist? Daniela smiles and whispers in my ear. Wow! All I can say for now is that this is something I know personally, every bride wishes they had access to. Think ‘World for Brides”. I personally cannot wait for knowing this perfectionist and visual artist, it will be a whimsical experience within itself.

THE MODERN DAY SUIT IS AS MUCH OF A STAPLE IN MALE UNIFORM AS IT A MYSTERIOUS PIECE OF MEN’S RAG, STOOPED DEEP IN THE HISTORY OF WESTERN CULTURE.

With the combination of all the rules and ‘no’ rules that exist around men’s dress these days, it’s hard to make clear exactly how to wear it all.

The wedding is all about the party. The time of day, season, month, guest list, drinks, it all contributes key factors that the bride to be (the boss) has to like.

The suit is to men what Chanel is to women: for some, aspirational and unattainable, for others, a part of the every day wardrobe that sets them aside from the rest.

These factors boil over in the heat of organisational passion to the groom’s outfit on the day, which in recent times, much like the way of the suit itself, has shed its traditional façade.

Eternally understated, classically tailored and adding a polished edge to even the most uninspiring of dressers, the suit has advanced out of proportion. From the 18th century regal robes it was, through the war era where morning suits and lounge suits transformed Britain into a sea of black and white businessmen to the snappier versions we see today, it’s as versatile a piece of clothing as the wearer deems. As the fluidity and freedom of design seeped out of the couture fashion world and into that of menswear, suits began to change. Though this change has only really been seen for the past decade or so, coloured suits are more and more prevalent with feature shirts and ties taking centre stage.

Colour in spring is key with fruitful and exciting shirt and tie combintations, the winter months stay true to their conservative history while though it seems crazy to have a summer wedding in Australia, the linen suit has all bases covered when occasions like this call. There’s no hiding from the fact that walking the fine line between acceptable and unacceptable in wedding dress for the groom or groomsmen is a tough one. Assuringly enough, the rules that gave birth to the suit in a deep conservative history have loosened-up and continue to do so as more and more men become more adventurous with their dress.

But how does this work for weddings?

She exudes a natural warmth and welcoming energy but at the same time underneath this stunning canvas is an astute business woman and new mum. Hailing from Jakarta, where she was the only girl to her older siblings, Tiur spent her childhood days being ‘toughened’ up by her older brothers. ONCE UPON A TIME

Located in Melbourne, on a special night, a love story was born. Unaware of what was to happen, two souls found each other...this is the love story of Steven and Bianca. 7 years ago, after returning from a year long trip overseas, Steven made arrangements to

have a little reunion with his friends at Ocean Blue. It was Grand Final eve so Melbourne was abuzz with people celebrating everywhere. On that same evening, a beautiful girl, Bianca, made a decision after a breakup to pick up he life and move on so decided to celebrate her new found freedom and empowerment with some girlfriends. They chose to celebrate also at Ocean Blue. During the night, Steven made his way over to Bianca and told her how beautiful her smile was. They chatted, danced and laughed for hours, exchanging numbers at the end of the evening. But something quite magical had happened, Bianca felt instantly, that she would one day marry this wonderful man. It only takes a moment when the magic is right.

Ally Wilson is about to tie the knot on the 18th of October this year so she is well and truly in the full swing of wedding planning. Sitting with Ally and her mum, Maureen, I am intrigued at how relaxed and together this pending bride to be seems. Breathtaking beautiful and natural, Ally begins to tell me of her love story. Whilst studying the Arts at Uni and Paul was studying teaching, they met at a party there. It was love at first sight as they spent the whole evening talking. They parted ways with busy timetables but never got a chance to reunite. Two to three months later, Ally added him on social media and after that they were inseparable. Within 2 -3 months, they made it official then were living together within one year. 6 years later, Ally was snuggled in bed on her day off for a much needed sleep in, when Paul woke her up and presented her with a beautiful bunch of flowers. He then ordered her to get dressed as they were going for a drive. Ally knew something was definitely cooking (and it wasn’t pancakes!) as Paul never brought flowers. He took her back to Uni to the exact place they had met. There was no one around as it was holidays. He took her hand and went to have a seat on some stools there. Sitting nervously quiet, Then he turned to Ally and said ‘You know I love you and will you marry me?’. Ally burst into tears as even though she knew this moment would come and she had a feeling, nothing in the world prepares you for when those sacred words are spoken. They went straight away back to the jewelry store as Paul has only purchased her ring that very morning, to have it resized. The staff, as you can imagine, were so excited to witness this new love’s romance first hand. The next thing they did was to call all their family and friends with the great news. Mum, Maureen was onto it, organizing a celebratory party at the Ivy up in the Yarra Vally straight away. The indulged in Champagne, joy and laughter surrounded by the love of close family and friends. The initial feeling other than absolute happiness was panic! What to do? Ally put that aside and got onto the task of planning her engagement party. This was meant to be an intimate cocktail affair that turned out a little larger held at Temperance in Chapel Street for 80 people. The first thing Ally did was to find a venue that she would love to celebrate her big day. After

much pounding the pavement, Ally fell in love with the Pump house due to it’s relaxed yet sophisticated atmosphere. This she needed to secure 1 year ago as it is probably one of the most important parts of wedding planning with many venues booked up to 2 years in advance. At the same time, Ally commenced the arduous plight of choosing her gown. Seeking something that reflected her classic yet natural look, Ally fell in love with a gorgeous vintage - bohemian gown that reflected her love of simplicity, beautiful fabrics and her natural love of the outdoors. But it wasn’t always smooth sailing. Unfortunately, Ally lost (well sacked) one of her bridesmaids along the way. Weddings, I am discovering, seem to bring out the best and worst in some people. Those you have known the longest seem to morph into quite different personalities. This was the case for Ally for as soon as she became engaged to Paul, a distance seemed to develop with this particular friend. Then, the worst scenario occurred, where this long time friend conducted a public attack of her mum through social media. Not the type of personality you really want to share your big day with. Now with just under 2 months to go, the craziness has started. And even though Ally sits there looking so together, the nerves are beginning. The girls have got their dresses. The stylist (a close friend) is working relentlessly with her to create a modern bohemian soiree, the rings are now ordered, menus are being discussed, they need to get their shoes, the bridesmaids bracelets need to be ordered and the flowers are booked. The next step for Ally, is to book the girls’ personally inscribed bracelets, go shoe shopping (yay), send out the invitations, choose her music, finalize her accessories and of course that last dress fitting and the rehearsal. Stress!!! On top of all of this, there’s the kitchen tea and the hen’s day/night to organize though I believe her girls have taken control of that! As we discuss what’s left to do, I touch on how Ally’s now feeling as we put things into perspective. For this hard working photographer, everything seems to have come to the forefront suddenly. She’s feeling a little rushed though it still would be hard to tell. I can’t wait to see Ally’s photos of her big day as one thing that is guaranteed is that she is going to make the most beautiful radiant bride and the day will be filled with everlasting echoes of love and laughter.

Walking down the cobbled dark alley alongside the incredibly stylish Ezard fine dining sunken restaurant, you are taken to the bold silver lift. Leaving the clatter of plates and the amazing aromas behind, smoothly and quickly she arrives at her destination. When you envisage class, sophistication, decadence and Art, one place comes to mind, Mon Bijou meaning My Jewel. And it is just that and more. Stepping out you are immediately taken back by the ambience of this incredibly designed space. Amongst all the glitz and sparkle that seems to embellish even your eyes, there is an intimacy, a sophistication that completely envelops you. The view is spectacular, 270 degrees of spectacular (and that is just during the day). Right next door is the steeple of St. Paul’s cathedral which you a given a sensation that you can almost touch this. You are greeted with a fabulous cocktail that almost seems to be a part of the decor in it’s rich inviting colour by a well attired waiter. Luxurious leather seating adorn the window areas providing your guests with the ultimate comfort and viewing points. It is relaxed yet impeccably stylish. As you sip your cocktail, you can seriously taste the colours and your mind wanders into a world of dreams. As you delve further, you are made aware of the multiple choices and options that can be created if holding a function here, especially a wedding or engagement soiree. The outside deck houses ‘that’ lap pool. How beautiful would that be for a beachball themed wedding or in the evening with beautiful lilies suspended between floating candles. Wow!

The deck makes for a perfect ceremony platform and can be styled in any theme as this venue is simply so versatile. And it doesn’t stop there. There is another level, where the DJ for your evening can spin his decks, even make this a completely different theme to below like a masquerade do. This is like no other venue I have experienced. It holds something special on it’s own. Yes it is absolutely lavish and luxurious but it is tastefully executed. It has a unique statement that makes it standout. Yes, like a jewel or a diamond. Each facet sparkles yet each gem is distinctly unique. It is that aspect that has drawn me in completely. This space feels like your own dream. Though lavish, it can be dressed to suit each and every theme without looking out of place. Each dress colour and style will simply

melt into the elegance and in fact, the sparkle becomes canvas like as you become the feature it is presenting. the cuisine is cocktail style as this is definitely a place of celebration. The selection of culinary pleasure is perfect for the venue in that it celebrates the finest of locally sourced ingredients, beautiful organic herbs picked daily and presented with impeccable finesse of that of a hatted restaurant . There is ample luxury seating scattered throughout for your guests to be comfortable and enjoy but if I imagine correctly, a night and maybe even a day after of endless dancing, laughter and incredible memories is on the menu in a venue of this calibre.

PS MADE WITH LOVE

I LOVE STATIONARY. I MEAN, I REALLY REALLY LOVE STATIONARY. I GO INTO A FRENZY IN OFFICE WORKS, KIKKI K AND SMIGGLE TO THE POINT OF HYPERVENTILATING. IN FACT, I HAVE A CUPBOARD DEDICATED TO STATIONARY I HAVE BEEN ‘COLLECTING’. I WAS ALWAYS THE ONE WITH THE PRETTIEST CHRISTMAS AND BIRTHDAY WRAPPING. I ALSO LOVED PUTTING THINGS INTO COLOUR CATEGORIES INCLUDING MY OFFICE.

When it came time to organize my wedding, I began to really see how important packaging and presentation were in telling a story, finishing a look and creating breath-taking memories. This I have discovered is like the icing on the cake or the difference between a little lipstick before you leave the house or a pair of thongs verses a pair of Manolo Blahniks when it comes to ‘finishing’ your wedding theme and decor. I have discovered the Monet of this niche business. Meet Liv. A super bubbly personality that once you strike up a conversation it steam rolls into an epic adventure of stories that we never quite finish but end up meeting them somewhere in the middle. This busy stay at home mum of 2 beautiful girls, still made some time to speak with me and you could tell that everything was run to schedule by the pace set. TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT LIV? CHILDHOOD, GROWING UP, SIGNS THAT THIS WOULD ONE DAY BE YOUR PATH? I was born and raised in Brisbane, and lived there until my adult life when we moved to the Gold Coast - which is where we have reared our own little family. My father is an architect and I grew up in a fast paced, creative household, where hard work always came first. I studied journalism, and began working at News Ltd (swiftly jumping the fence over to Advertising) which is where my love of paper was born and my work ethic was well and truly concreted, as was working to daily deadlines. My upbringing held me in good stead for this environment, and I thrived and loved the adrenaline rush that comes with newspapers and remained with News Ltd for 8 years until

leaving to have my first baby. Being a career woman who climbed the ranks from Sales Support, to finally managing the Motoring team of The Gold Coast Bulletin, I was certain I would return after the traditional 12 months period post baby. I was wrong - and my baby girl changed my world and what was once the blood in my veins, News Ltd soon became a part of my past! Rather than returning to work after my extended maternity leave, I decided to have another baby. Desperate to not miss a second of my daughtersʼ lives, but yearning for that purposeful chaos that the workplace gave, I was told by my hubby to use all that ‘rare’ commodity that ʻus mumsʼ have - ʻSpare Time!ʼ, and come up with a business plan if I wished to remain a SAHM! TELL ME ABOUT THE CONCEPT OF PS MADE WITH LOVE? The birth of the Lolly Buffet was happening all around me, and I styled a few of my own events at home for the kids. Everyone told me I should definitely get in to styling, as it ticked my ʻcreativeʼ box and I thoroughly enjoyed it. However, the set up/pack down, proximity limitations, and capped number of events you can take on, just didnʼt seem viable to me. So with much careful thought and planning, I came up with Printeds - custom designed, printed, and cut paperie to compliment Lolly Buffets! There were millions of Printable suppliers around, but at the time, no one else really offered the finished product! It was the perfect business model for me - I got to be creative, once again I was playing with paper and I wasnʼt restricted to location. I have two tiers of clients - stylists and DIYers, and I could do all my work from the comfort of

my home office at night when the kids went to bed, so during the day I got to soak up the fun times of being a SAHM, and come night fall Iʼd wear my Creative Director hat - only this time my strong work ethic set to benefit me and my family rather than big corporation!

FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS WORDS | BEN ANDERSON

THIS IS A TRIBUTE TO WHERE THE IDEA BEGAN FOR FJORDE BRIDE, THIS PHOTO EDITORIAL WAS SHOT IN OCTOBER OF 2011 FOR THE FIFTH ISSUE OF FJORDE MAGAZINE. IT WAS THEN THAT THE IDEA FOR A BRIDAL MAGAZINE CAME FROM.

The images taken by Woodrow Wilson, an amazing Melbourne photographer exemplified the glamour and beauty that the bridal industry was hiding away. So it was decided to showcase this editoral again to pay homage to not only the phenominal work done by such an amazing team but to demonstrate like a wedding that so many of you brides sometimes prepar for for years can come to a beautiful fruition. This project has taken years to get off the ground and finally put together. It it is not without the people that believed in this magazine that, the dream and what we were trying to create. It was there support that got us through. We say a simple thank you, you know who you are. To name you all would take a publication all its own. So take a walk with us to a time not to long ago that started this jouney...

But times are changing as we as a society seek knowledge of what we are putting into and onto our bodies. We are ‘awakening’ to the implications that what may seem an instant miracle transformation, could have lifelong implications on our wellbeing. Not to mention, the ethical side of how ingredients are obtained and the effects these may have on us over time. It is common knowledge through scientific investigations that we can take in the energies of the processes of how things are obtained and these can have profound effects on our wellbeing over time. There are now many companies working on changing this and opening us up to the benefits of our natural earth and it’s array of healing remedies. The results are simply amazing.

Susan and her son Julian, commenced research into new innovative ingredients so as to provide people with a choice as to what they were putting on their skin. As with most success stories, it is always in our interest to discover more about the creators. Susan was an extremely creative and intelligent woman. Having lost her own mother at a young age, Susan found herself with many challenges growing up and some situations that were extremely painful for anyone to endure let alone survive.

She found herself living in the Ashram in the city where she met a young man that she would go onto have a child with. Julian was born and a bundle of joy in Susan’s life. He remembers running wild with his friends through the One such company paving the way in which we ashram as people were in deep meditation take care of our skin, is Australian made and trying to reach the state of nirvana. AUM BEAUTY

Julian went on to work with his mum when he could make those choices, when she was developing the She cosmetic brand. Together they created an amazing product range. In 2005 they began researching new innovative natural ingredients, working with some of the most highly esteemed chemists and scientists. In 2008 AUM was launched with incredible new technology. In November 2010, the saddest news rocked our world as Susan passed away at an age too young, from a brain tumor. I was fortunate enough to know Susan myself personally, and the world lost a creative vibrant eccentric soul, who’s only desire was to provide people with amazing experiences, and to give back to the world something special through the love she put into her product. Susan was a perfectionist in every sense of the word and would not release anything until the smallest detail had been perfected to her standard. She worked hard, relentlessly and was driven spiritually. Oh she loved to dress up and dance. There

112

FJ O R D E B R I D E

was an almost child like innocence within this incredibly intelligent genius. For anyone that was fortunate to know her, this is what they will remember. AUM was passed down to Julian who is now the Managing Director. On asking Julian what his mum taught him, he responds ‘Susan was a pioneer. She was tough, focused and disciplined. Her vision she never wavered from. Having the responsibility of AUM passed on to me, I realize just how hard she worked to create this.’ AUM’s products were the first based 100% on natural ingredients with no water bases so as to ensure maximum benefit to the skin. There were no pesticides or preservatives just pure plant ingredients 100% organically certified. From the moment the seed is planted throughout the whole process it takes to create an AUM product, it goes through a stringent analysis to insure it is 100% ethical and organic. This is a challenge even today as it is, only now that science is really tapping

into more resources of the benefits of nature and seeking ways in which it can deliver the most incredible healing ingredients to the skin. Natural ingredients have been very limited and difficult to access. Australia is a world leader in natural technology with companies like Jurlique and Aesop awakening society to the possibilities of this. I asked Julian which was his favourite product in the AUM range. He loves the firming eye cream which is derived from Okra which has the ability to firm the under eye area, through slowing down the muscles, within 1 minute. Yes, 1 minute (give me a vat of this please). It also contains Argan extract which allows softness and tones the skin. This is different to the Argan oil you put into hair products as it is more intensified.

SPRING 2014

Julian also loves the lifting face serum as the effects of this beautiful plant based product is almost immediate. There is no water in any of the AUM products but they are full to the brim of rich active plant ingredients which penetrate deep into the dermis plumping the skin, feeding us with seriously amazing natural plant derived ingredients and aiding in the process of aging from all outside forces. Because of the process in which these products are formulated, it also has an impact on you psychologically. You can literally feel the love and goodness in which this is made. The fragrance, once again, all natural essential oils, enhance your experience, causing you to relax, your skin to relax so that these miracle ingredients can do their work. For those of you that have had the AUM experience, like myself and I am seriously hooked, AUM is now available online. If you are wanting to try this incredible product, Julian is looking at having their availability at select beauty salons and even for the brides to be, the perfect pampering party for you and your maids.
