HOW DID YOU GET STARTED DESIGNING WEDDING DRESSES? In 1996 we launched the first eveningwear collection. Back then I was dancing and I couldn’t find anything that I could justify spending money on so we did the costuming ourselves. We went ahead and started designing our own clothes. When you launch something you don’t know how the client base is going to take it, but then clients responded well to our collection AND started requesting us to make their wedding dresses. From our eveningwear collection it was like it was meant to be! I THINK BEING A DESIGNER MEANS YOU HAVE TO PLAY PSYCHOLOGIST A LITTLE BIT – YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND A BRIDE’S PERSONALITY TO FIND THE RIGHT THEME AND COLOURS. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR BRIDES WHO HAVE NO IDEA WHERE TO START? Firstly, I always make them sit down and chat to make the bride relaxed and comfy. Then we pull out all the silhouettes to establish what kind of fit they like – whether it’s a fitted flared look or ball gown and we really go from there. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF BEING A DESIGNER? The girls. I love my clients I really do. To me it’s an honour to be apart of the big day. That’s our favourite moment. It’s almost like we become a part of their family – because the dresses are chosen, fitted and altered within a span of 6 – 9 months. We also have a lot of beautiful Irish brides and we’re lucky because we have Skype in the store. It’s a beautiful moment when a bride’s mother is in Ireland and she’s in the kitchen congratulating her daughter over Skype. It’s such a celebration and we love being able to bring family together. It’s even like we’re getting ready with the family as well.

My philosophy is that finding the dress is a life altering and emotional moment. Some brides come in who are very nervous whilst others have their Pinterest boards all ready, are good at organising and have a strong sense of self. I love having a nice chat with the brides when they come in and it’s important that their perception of inner beauty matches with the dress that they choose. Another lot that come through are stunning but have no confidence, so I love getting to know the bride so she can express everything that is unique to her and her lifestyle. I get to meet every client one on one to be involved with each of the brides and I make sure that their confidence reflects within.

HAVE YOU HEARD OF POP UP WEDDINGS? THEY’VE BECOME MORE POPULAR RECENTLY! No I haven’t! Organisers to the same display and set up and you can pay an hour and a half. We can find the perfect dress for a relatively stress free and small ceremony.

WHAT DO YOU THINK A BRIDE’S SHOPPING EXPERIENCE SHOULD BE LIKE DURING THEIR APPOINTMENT? Hopefully it should be one on one - that’s the way we do it! Clientele love the fact that they have time to think. There’s always only one person in the store as opposed to four girls trying dresses on at the same time. It means that the experience is more personalised and we really get to know the families over the 6-9 month period.

SPRING IS HERE, WHICH MEANS BETTER WEATHER! WHAT TRENDS ARE YOU NOTICING THAT YOU’RE USING IN YOUR NEW COLLECTION? I’d sat that very sweet laces are trending, which are traditional but refined. During changing seasons, the basic dress doesn’t change but I’ve noticed that there’s been more elegant beadwork. Simple lines, satin detail and a pop of lace are trending too. We have a halter neck with sheer panels that has a beachy, sexy and relaxed feel, which is popular for spring.

The appointment is all about the bride. As a sales person or designer, your job is to make sure to steer them in the right direction – especially figuring out their thoughts and interests on the dresses they try on. Of course we also have champagne when we find the right dress! But we also take a photo of the bride in her dress, which is a nice way of preserving the memory of the moment. DO YOU HAVE A PIECE OF ADVICE FOR BRIDES ON THEIR WEDDING DAY? Enjoy it! So much effort and time goes into all the details. If something small goes wrong don’t sweat it. Everyone attending loves you! A lot of brides will ask me “What if they don’t like the gown?” and I tell them that it’s the meaning behind the wedding that matters most. It’s a very overwhelming process – especially when magazines, blogging and suppliers now have jumped on board with social media these days.

HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE YOUR EVERYDAY STYLE? I’m so simple, and love the classic and understated style– but I love shoes! I love laces, silks and satins that are classic and elegant.

WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION? Meeting one on one with the girls. I get to understand each individual client’s feelings. I love hearing a bit of insight into the bride’s journeys. Even the girls who have never been dreaming of getting married! We go over a few little things, like the flowers that they’re getting, to get an idea of what style they’re working towards. So for example, girls who want more of a pretty look will use light blue and pink floral whilst girls who are more glamorous will go for a cheekier style. Then from there we look at the collection in store and whether they want a classic chic style or a princess bride style to classic fill gowns, v necks and strapless dresses we stock. As you can tell most of my inspiration comes from the client.

Depending on where they’re headed, we’ll show them laces, which change seasonally. These also differ and vary to reflect the girl’s personality – from classic ivory and off whites to guipure lace and even French laces with floral details. For example, a girl with a demure personality will feel more comfortable with a soft and pretty lace. Meanwhile, a luxurious lace like the silk brocade on our Annabelle gown is something different. I especially love clean lines and understated dresses so I LOVE LOVE LOVE silk brocade lace. This definitely changes depending on the mood of the wedding as well. WHAT’S A TYPICAL DAY FOR YOU LIKE? I’m actually about to update our Facebook page with the busy week we’ve had – and it’s only Wednesday! On Monday we had thirteen gorgeous brides that were either new clients or alterations. On Tuesday, it was mostly behind the scenes like altering hemlines, straps and adding beadwork. This morning a bride came in whose dress has been delayed in another store. It’s especially hard to find a new dress because you’ve already fallen in love with one and you need to find one that you can feel the same amount of love for. She found one she loved today and we all cried. It was a dramatic morning. I usually start very early in the morning and if I bring any work home, I only use social media at night and lucky for me, my kids can help me with that.

I READ ONE OF YOUR BLOG POSTS CALLED “LETTING YOUR TRUE COLOURS SHINE THROUGH” AND HOW DO YOU THINK THAT TRADITIONAL AND CONTEMPORARY STYLES CAN BE BROUGHT TOGETHER? Through the fabrics - we currently have a beautiful style collection called ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’. I use French corded lace for those gowns and they’re quite popular. A more champagne or nude toned under lay is another way to get a traditional look without looking too much like a bride. Vineyard weddings and small ceremonies are often the ones that aren’t too modern and too understated.

YOU MENTIONED THAT YOU’RE EXCITED ABOUT AUSTRALIA HAVING IT’S OWN BRIDAL FASHION WEEK TO BRING AUSTRALIAN DESIGNERS INTO THE SPOTLIGHT. DO YOU HAVE EXPANSION PLANS TO GO OVERSEAS? We’re having such a busy year next year. We’re launching our first wholesale collection. However, organising a party that is classy enough to invite grandma, yet fun enough to be enjoyed by the bride’s friends is a dilemma. It’s a dilemma that has plagued the mind of many bridesmaids. HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN THE INDUSTRY? My husband and I wanted a wedding with a casual beach vibe. I noticed that when I was planning my own wedding and looking for the bits and pieces that fit the bill, it became difficult. I thought that it would be a good opening for a bridal store that catered to couples that wanted a casual and more natural wedding. So, Bohemian brides came from wanting to start my own business. WHAT INSPIRES YOU? I love helping people. Everyone approaches their wedding day differently and it’s about catering to those different needs. I love hearing about everyone’s stories and helping them out where I can. Especially because I have a small boutique store I can work with brides one on one. It’s definitely fun to go to work everyday! ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR BRIDES ON THEIR WEDDING DAY? Have fun! Don’t overthink your wedding on the day. At the end of the day, you’re marrying the person that you love and everything else is an added bonus. I say focus on the day the next day after you’re married and that will help with stress. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR MUST HAVES FOR THE WEDDING DAY? I’m so practical but make sure you bring comfortable shoes! I’d also make sure that you have someone that you can go to for anything. Whether it is your mum, sister or bridesmaid, make sure you have someone that you can rely on. These people will definitely make you more comfortable on your wedding day if you ask anything of them. IS THERE A PIECE OF ADVICE YOU GIVE TO BRIDES WHEN LOOKING FOR A WEDDING DRESS? A lot of people come in and ask me straight away what I suggest, but I think that it’s all personal choice. You want a dress that you feel yourself in. Finding the one perfect dress feels like an overwhelming task because you expect to have the fireworks moment. You should look for a dress that ticks all the boxes. Look for the dress you can’t get out of your head. If you’re bringing someone else, make sure that they will be honest with you and respect your decision. Don’t let yourself be pushed into choosing a dress that you don’t feel yourself in. Bring someone who you really trust and value their opinion.

I KNOW YOU HANDPICK THE COLLECTION OF BRIDE AND BRIDESMAID DRESSES - WHAT IS IT THAT YOU LOOK FOR IN EACH OF THE DESIGNS? I’m a small boutique so I try and pick each dress to be different to the ones that I already stock. It’s sometimes difficult because I am swayed by dresses that I like! So instead, I try to make sure that I have different dresses for different personalities and different body types. I also bring a mentor along with me who usually does purchasing with me to trust I’m making good choices. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVOURITE COLOURS AND TRENDS FOR SPRING WEDDINGS? Something that has been really popular this spring is champagne and nude lining under laces as opposed to white. More brides are also looking at geometric lace shape rather than floral shapes. Of course for spring weddings flower crowns are very popular, but also succulents for a more natural and beautiful wedding. DO YOU WATCH A LOT OF SAY YES TO THE DRESS? I’ve never seen it! Some brides come in on the first day and want to order a dress straight away. It’s a big decision to make right away so I always tell them to go home and think about it. They’re always very confused, but I want to make sure it’s really the dress that they want. I’ll call them the next day to ask if they want to order it – but once it’s ordered, it can’t be unordered. WHEN AND HOW DID YOU GET STARTED WITH WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY? When I was fourteen I travelled to the United States with my family for my cousin’s wedding. Throughout the whole trip I held a camera in my hand documenting all the beautiful scenes and structures. When it came time to attend my cousin’s wedding in Houston, I was moving around and being the annoying kid in the background taking photos of everyone and capturing all the stunning colours you would expect at a cultural wedding. From then on, I went from being the token family member taking photos during family events and weddings to being sought out to capture weddings globally today. WHAT SERVICES DOES RAWBERRY OFFER? We offer a variety of services for couples based on personal preference and budget. From basic photography packages shooting the event to premium packages that include videography services from the start of the day til the last kiss goodnight. We also edit in-house and as an add-on, create beautiful online galleries for our couples to view and share. Aside from weddings, I also love capturing landscapes. It’s a moment away from the craziness of life where I get to spend an hour or two capturing the beautiful scenes God makes. HOW IS RAWBERRY DIFFERENT? Weddings are usually the first biggest day in a couple’s lives with their family and friends present. Some photographers can become quite engrossed in their work and get in the way of special moments. You will never see us directing a couple to act, fake it or do anything that ruins a moment or activity, like cutting the cake. We like shooting candid photos, with natural lighting and personality. We are there to capture what’s happened as a whole by taking a step back and complementing what’s happening in a genuine manner, not manipulating it. We love to capture genuine and special moments between the couple; that’s how we’re different and why people love our work.

YOU PHOTOGRAPH A LOT OF CULTURAL WEDDINGS – PLEASE SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE? Cultural weddings are very fun; every religion and nationality have different activities and rituals, and this means you need to constantly be on the ball. My experiences have varied from traditional church weddings to extravagant weddings like the one I shot in Dallas, where the bride and groom arrived on elephant. No matter how many weddings I’ve shot, I can still never expect the same day; there’s always a different twist to cultural traditions, which makes me absolutely love my job. One Lebanese couple had a sword ceremony open the dance floor. That was bloody awesome! Pardon the pun.

excitement; it was simply amazing. Another wedding I really enjoyed was in Dubai in Palm Island; shooting there was both a professional honour and a personal achievement.

WHAT TIPS CAN YOU RECOMMEND TO COUPLES THAT ARE SEARCHING FOR THE RIGHT PHOTOGRAPHER, AND WHAT TYPES OF SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE SHOULD THEY LOOK FOR IN A PHOTOGRAPHER? Don’t accept a portfolio with one or two good photos from a four-hour night over twenty weddings - that’s not reflective of the expected overall quality. Anyone can take 5,000 photos and pick the best one from each. As I’ve shot all over Australia, Asia, from the West and East Coast of the US and the Middle East, its difficult to choose a favourite location because as cliché it sounds, the world is a canvas and I just love traveling the world and shooting everywhere. That being said, putting aside the professional aspect, taking photos at my brothers wedding in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia was absolutely breathtaking. We were so high (420 metres in the air) lightning appeared to start below us. What a sight! HOW SHOULD BRIDAL PARTIES PREPARE FOR THE BIG DAY FOR THE PHOTOGRAPHER? If you have a good wedding planner they will tell you this, although it helps knowing the positions beforehand. The photographer needs to know where you will stand during the ceremony, where you will walk to and from, and who else will be involved. This information will help get that perfect natural shot and avoid having your photographer run around across the front and potentially blocking the view. Also, don’t rely on just one photographer; there is a strategy to do this and we give free advice on how to handle this! LAST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’D OFFER TO BRIDE-TO-BE’S BEFORE THEIR BIG DAY? Don’t sweat the little things on the day; do as much planning as you can beforehand with your wedding planner and on the day of, have trust and faith it will work out. PARIS “The vision of my wedding has always included style, luxury, and a modern theme with a romantic twist. A destination wedding that runs for multiple days so this dream doesn’t end too soon. One thing I’ve always heard is that the day of your wedding goes by too fast, and this is something I wouldn’t let happen.

Being the happiest day of your life, your wedding should also be the best-dressed day of your life, so the whole ceremony deserves your sharpest outfit. For a dapper look, I personally find the threepiece suit the best option; a matching vest adds elegance and formality to the two pieces, and it always keep your look smart even when the jacket is off. A solid and clean white shirt with a nice open cutaway collar is a smart pick for the occasion; avoid using patterns, as clashing with the bride’s outfit could be risky. A strong white shirt will never let you down. The tie will play a big role in the photos so keep it simple yet elegant at the same time. Unless it fits within your theme, don’t choose a shiny or bright piece; look for shades and earthbased colours like blue, green or burgundy. An exception would be a Rustic-themed wedding, where light blues, greens and pinks may work better against the outside backdrop. Ensure you have a tie, pocket square and sock combination for a fresh look. Like women match their bags with shoes, match your belt with your shined shoes. These types of details make the difference and paying attention to them will ensure the photos are focused on not just your clothing, but also your smiling faces. Finally, weddings are a never-ending selection of small details, so try keeping it as simple as possible. FA DY & SARAH ABOUT OUR DAY: Our day was focused on being with the people we loved and was surrounded with love and laughter, as well as excitement for the next season as our lives were brought together. Fady and I were long distance while we were dating- I was from a small country town 3 hours outside of Adelaide, and he grew up in Sydney. So our wedding day meant the end a long distance relationship! I had moved all of my things across to Sydney and my last bags were packed, ready to start our lives together in Sydney after the honeymoon. This also meant that our wedding day would bring together friends and family that were two states apart. So we decided to get married in Adelaide, where I was completing my degree at uni- a place in between both families! His family would fly 2 hours to reach Adelaide, and my family would drive 3 hours to get to Adelaide, so for our day, everyone traveled with us!

We also created a Facebook page where we shared flight specials and directions. We included a letter in each of our guests rooms, thanking them for coming and giving them some ideas of places to see while they were in Adelaide. We also invited them to a breakfast buffet with our parents in the morning. I even organised hairdressing friend to be available to do hair for some of the ladies in the morning! We both hired houses for our wedding weekend, as neither of us had houses in Adelaide! This was exciting but took a lot of organisation to find suitable places that were also a reasonable distance from the Church. We loved that our wedding was unique and would be memorable for us and our family and friends. Our day was so fun that it went too fast!

ATTIRE My dress: I went wedding dress shopping with my Mum and my Maid of honour, my sister. When I tried on this dress at an Essence trunk show I didn’t want to take it off! Fit and flare with incredible detailing and a gorgeous sweetheart neckline- and keyhole back- it was exactly what I wanted. A special plus I discovered after the wedding, was that my dress wasn’t released into the Essence range- it was one of a kind! BRIDESMAIDS DRESSES I wanted something unique for my bridesmaids, something flattering and beautiful. In my search I came across the amazing goddess by nature dress. It flowed and flattered and I had no doubt it would look stunning on each of my bridesmaids. The ‘Isand Paradise’ colour contrasted beautifully with my dress and the natural backdrops we were wanting on the day. Grooms suits: Fady wanted something modern but still traditional, so he chose charcoal coloured suits coupled with bow-ties and buttonholes for each of the groomsmen. He stood out by wearing a white vest and bowtie. They all looked so sharp!

FLOWERS I really wanted flowers that were soft and natural, without being too structured, but still had the elegance of a classic bouquet. Our florist pulled this off beautifully! I asked for pink in my bouquet- it was important for me to have that soft, feminine colour show through somewhere. Each groomsman had a buttonhole that matched the bridesmaids bouquets.

Pastor gave the message, and Fady’s pastor administered the vows- it was lovely. A good friend who wasn’t able to fly to Adelaide to attend the wedding created our Unity Candlesthey were gorgeous.

CEREMONY / CHURCH As neither of us were from Adelaide, we didn’t have a local church there. So, in our search we looked for somewhere that was traditional but beautiful, and in a location where our family and friends could enjoy afterwards. We found St Peter’s Anglican in Glenelg- a gorgeous and popular beach destination in Adelaide.

RECEPTION ENTERTAINMENT / DECORATIONS We wanted our reception to be relaxed, but also for our guests to really enjoy themselves! We provided a photo-booth and we organised to have an acoustic two piece band who played songs we chose during the evening. Both of our personalities came out in the way we organised our reception decor, the natural romance and classy elegance were merged in a room dressed with a stunning hanging chandelier overhanging the dance floor, hanging crystal tree centerpieces and a bridal backdrop featuring of hanging flower balls. We wanted our ceremony to be simple but meaningful. So we had two good friends sing a beautiful Christian song; Cornerstone. This song reflected our shared faith and the role that we wanted God to have in our marriage. We are both close to our Pastors, so really wanted both pastors involved in the ceremony, so my

After the ceremony, we made it a priority to have a greeting line, to ensure we could personally thank each of our family members who traveled to attend our wedding.

Our good friend was our MC for the evening, and he was hilarous, he shared memories, made sneaky jokes and laughed with us during the night- our guests loved it!

WHAT WAS EASY Choosing our venues- they seemed to fall in place! WHAT WAS CHALLENGING Organising our reception, because we put so much though and effort into it! We changed the venue room significantly to create a beautiful atmosphere that reflected us as a couple and made sure we provided entertainment and fun for our friends and family! HOW OUR GUESTS REACTED During our honeymoon, we kept seeing photos of our friends and family who were having an absolute ball visiting different places in Adelaide and making a fun weekend of it! We were so happy to see them having so much fun! We had so many comments on our ceremony, and on our reception- on how relaxed but enjoyable they were. Our guests loved the letter in their rooms, and had so much fun being able to spend the day together in their rooms, or going out and visiting different places. Honeymoon: Cancun, Mexico- and LA (Hollywood and Disneyland!)

YOU’VE SET A DATE, BOOKED THE VENUE, AND FOUND YOUR DREAM DRESS, NOW IT’S TIME FOR THE FUN PART, CHOOSING THE SHOES! SHOES ARE SOMETHING THAT MANY WOMEN SPEND A LOT OF TIME AND MONEY ON AND YOUR WEDDING SHOES SHOULD BE NO EXCEPTION. FINDING THE RIGHT SHOE CAN BE JUST AS IMPORTANT AS FINDING THE RIGHT DRESS.

Your first step should be choosing the style of shoe you want, so finding something that goes well with your dress and overall wedding theme is important but don’t feel as if you have to be traditional in your choice. Many brides choose a statement shoe in a colour or print that reflects their personality and adds a pop of colour to their usually white ensemble. Once you have decided on style of shoe you want, start to consider the variables such as type of heel, height, straps, and material. Wedding shoes will be on your feet from start until finish so you will want them to be comfortable and easy to walk in. If you aren’t confident walking in high heels, consider wedges, kitten keels or even flats. Ensure that your feet are comfortable and that you can walk easily in your shoes well before the big day by practicing around the house.

If you are sticking to a tight budget, do not worry, there is an abundance of purse-friendly wedding shoe options out there. Formal shoes are often similar in style and colour to wedding shoes and they are usually a fraction of the price. There are no rules when it comes to wedding shoes for the bride, it’s all up to her personal preference and style, so consider purchasing wedding shoes that could be worn again or are non-traditional such as sandals, flats, coloured or even sneakers. If you still cannot find the perfect shoe for you, there are a number of online stores which allow you to customise your shoe; everything from the height of the heel to the colour. The most important thing for the bride to remember when choosing their wedding shoe is that this is their big day and anything goes. You being happy and comfortable in what shoes you chose is what matter most.

NOURA & ANDREW I thought some brighter coloured flowers for the Bridesmaids would really pop with their mint dresses so Nes (the florist) had theirs made with some brighter pinks but still had it wrapped in lace to keep the look consistent. We painted an old door and placed the guest list on it using twine and kraft paper. We also had a door mat that said Mr and Mrs Mannah in front of it.

I felt that styling the wedding wasn’t as challenging as I thought it would be. We had so much fun doing it and we definitely loved the final look of it all.

We had flowers at the ceremony and reception. Baby’s breathe in the aisles (on both the pews and on the ground). The baby’s breathe on the pews were wrapped in burlap to add that rustic vintage touch. The baby’s breathe on the ground were placed inside rustic wine boxes. We definitely received a lot of compliments on that one!

WEDDING DETAILS We had 6 bridesmaids and 6 groomsmen. Andrew is one of 6 boys. He asked all his brothers and my brother to be a groomsmen. I had my 4 close cousins and my 2 sister in laws.. We also had 2 page boys and 2 flower girls.

SPECIAL MOMENTS ÔÔ The moment dad walked into the room and saw me in my gown and veil for the first time. That was a very special moment. We both had a little cry, and then mum joined in and cried with us, but it was definitely a bitter sweet moment. That was really special to me. ÔÔ Walking down the aisle towards Andrew. I really thought I would be so nervous but once dad started to walk me down I couldn’t wipe the huge smile I had on my face as I headed towards him. Everyone was smiling with me as they watched. Once the ceremony started we couldn’t stop looking at each other and giggling because we couldn’t believe what was actually happening. ÔÔ One funny moment we had was when Andrew decided to pull out his Iphone and take a ‘selfie’ just after we were pronounced husband and wife. Everyone laughed and thought that was a highlight moment.

THE DETAILS A LITTLE EXTRA Bridal Gown: Norma Bridal Couture We both come from large family, so we had quite a few guests. We really felt special on that Grooms Suit: Saba day because everyone was to be so excited for us. Groomsmen Suits: Rodger David When it was time to dance, we actually felt Bridesmaids: For Her & For Him crowded because everyone was on the dance floor which we loved. We had such a great Shoes: Tony Bianco time. Andrew and I took some time out on the day to just take a step back, watch and take it all in, and I’m glad we did (its definitely something I would recommend to other couples to do because you spend so much time and effort planning and its great to see what you were able to create).

IF YOU ARE BREATHING AT A fast high rate, this can cause anxiousness and create a ‘flight or fight’ response in our nervous system which stops us from being relaxed and able to enjoy what we are doing. Consciously slow your breathing down, taking 5 seconds to inhale, the 5 seconds to exhale and breath down to your stomach with your hand resting there. It will calm you down straight naturally.

Have you ever met people that may not be conventionally attractive - but seem to attract everyone in the room with their energy? This is a not well known factor that people already react to (that person had a weird ‘vibe’) for example. Coming up to the wedding, work on self love and your confidence will grow and you will have an attractive glow on the outside on the day. You can do this by taking time for

WHAT IS THERE NOT TO LOVE ABOUT SPRING – COLORFUL FLOWERS BLOOMING, FINALLY RUNNING OUTDOORS, SAYING GOODBYE TO WOOLLY SOCKS AND HELLO GORGEOUS SUNSHINE! OH, OF COURSE, IT’S HAYFEVER SEASON.

The last thing you want on the days leading up to and on the day of your wedding is waking up to itchy eyes, a blocked nose and sneezing every 5 seconds. Hayfever (aka Allergic rhinitis) is an allergy to proteins found in the pollen of trees, grasses, some plants, or mold that affect the mucous membranes of the nose, eyes and air passages causing thin clear discharge – hence the runny nose, watery eyes and sneezing! Common triggers of hayfever include mold, dust, trees, grass, flower pollen and animal dander, pollution, cigarette smoke and particles from home renovation. A poor diet can contribute to an excess of mucus produced by the body. Stress may also trigger hayfever as it plays a roll in depressing the immune system. TIPS ON HOW TO MANAGE IT BEFORE THE BIG DAY LIFESTYLE RECOMMENDATIONS

DIETARY RECOMMENDATIONS

Stay indoors as much as possible, particularly after 10am – grasses generally pollinate midday then the wind keeps the pollen floating until it drops to the ground at night.

Avoid mucus-forming foods/drinks – dairy products (not including yoghurt), wheat (found in bread and pasta), refined sugar (found in baked goods, cakes, chocolate, junk food and soft drinks) and alcohol.

Keep windows (including car windows while driving) and doors shut. Use your air conditioner instead. Wear glasses or sunglasses when outdoors to keep the pollen from getting into your eyes. Shower thoroughly, wash your hair and change your clothes when you come home after spending time outside to remove the accumulation of pollen sticking to you during the day – pollen attaches to your skin, hair and clothing, especially on a windy day. Have your lawn mown regularly – before your grass and lovely flowers grow.

Eat non-mucus-forming foods – whole grains, fresh fruit and vegetables, raw seeds and nuts and cold-pressed oils. Quercetin is a flavonoid found in citrus fruits, apples, berries, grapes and black tea, which acts as an anti-histamine, reducing hayfever symptoms. Bromelain, an enzyme found in the core of pineapples, has been shown to thin mucus and have anti-inflammatory properties, also reducing hayfever symptoms. Drinking 8 glasses of filtered water each day will help thin mucus secretions.
