WHAT DOES IT TAKE BY: GEORGE SERAPHIM

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO TRANSCEND WHO WE ARE RIGHT NOW, IF WHAT WE ARE IS CAUSING US TO FEEL SEPARATE FROM OTHERS AND ALONE IN THIS WORLD? IT IS TRUE THAT WE WERE ALL SPAWNED FROM A SINGLE CELL WHICH BY SOME UNKNOWN MIRACLE MULTIPLIED INTO THE HUMAN BODY WE SEE BEFORE US.

It is by this instantaneous spiral of events that all of us became human beings with the ability to process information and evolve into creative forces building a world which integrates everything in absolute equilibrium. Our tendency to feel separate is generated by our instinct of survival that we have carried since the dawn of Neanderthal man in times when we were nomads roaming vast and giant plains in search of food and shelter. This basic instinct to survive still runs all our tendencies to live out each day satisfying our basic needs. Our minds have been honed so deeply over millions of evolutionary years that we have forgotten where we have come from in those times because it has been so deeply ingrained in our subconscious tendencies to feel that we must protect ourselves from any form of perceived threat in whatever form it may appear to us as. All of us, deep down are scared and run our lives within a psychic global conscious mind which projects fear outwards as a beacon through which we respond to in so many different ways. Today our world is driven by economies which sometimes fight and subject its people to all out war to strive to survive the best it can and destroy its opponents. This is only just a larger scale of something which is barely instinctual and has been taught to us since we were born; the basic human belief that everyone is out there for themselves and if you don’t do whatever it takes to respond to this emergency then you will just be left behind. What then surmounts from this terrible distortion of reality are human beings who live in coalescence to each other and inadvertently cause suffering to one another because they believe they are singular entities in this world and no one cares. The greater surrogate of this tendency to survive is a world which is divided and is in descent, barely floating and hypersensitive. To strive for success is one thing but what we fail to see is that no one is really alone or separate.

A true understanding of who we are readjusts this failure to see reality and bridges us with an enlightened mind which sees no separation in the world. All of us need to feel safe and all of us regardless of where we sit and what we have been taught need to understand that we are controlled by fear and most of us run our lives blindly trying to battle it, in whatever way we know how. Most of us begin our lives through a degree of pain which we allow ourselves to become the victim of and thereby use this underlying pain to feed a cycle of feeling lost and alone, but through a careful rehabilitation of where this comes from we can free ourselves from this load and jump into a rapid reinstitution of healing and spiritual growth through which we can feel truly born again. Millions of people in this time are witnessing this repatriation of the soul once more because we are in such turbulent times that we have no other choice but to heavily question our own lives and the reason to existence itself. Your life is not meant to be run by others; it is only a trial and a test in who you can become in the face of what life can deal out to you. Therefore no matter what you have been through in this life you are not alone, each and every one of us shares memories and instances of so many different experiences and what we must understand is that until we can forgive ourselves truly, we will still be living in survival mode and missing out on what magic true inner freedom can bring and the abundance on all levels which results from this heightened state of being. Whoever you are, be certain that your life is not fixed for the answer to everything can really only be just around the corner if you allowed yourself the responsibility to look within and transform yourself accordingly. In a nutshell, in evaluating your core fear and in seeing it and how it has been at play in your life, you will awaken yourself beyond what you thought possible in your current life, separation is transcended and you become unified within yourself, a feeling of the deepest peace you have ever felt is the result.

WHICH DESIGNERS DO YOU STOCK? Something Borrowed stocks all high-end brands and also stock local and independent brands as well? We stock a mix of high end and local. We are the only boutique in Victoria if Ae’kemi who is a Western Australian based designer in addition to him we stock Alex Perry and Carla Zampatti to name a few. However we have our own label named Something Beyond, which is designed by myself and is exclusively to hire in store. Our AW 15 is about to be released and we are so excited for our clients to see it! WHAT’S YOUR BACKGROUND IN THE FASHION WORLD? I have always worked in the fashion industry, from stylist to brand manager to model booker, I have always been around clothing and work behind the scenes. WHAT OCCASIONS DO YOU CATER FOR? We cater for bridesmaid gowns, birthday parties, weddings, the races and also the polo any event where someone wants to look a million dollars but not pay the price. WHY RENT OVER BUY? Our garments rental price is a fraction of the retail price, girls only wear a dress a handful of times so rather than spend $600-$2000 on that dress you can hire it at $100-$150 which is a far more cost effective way to have the same look.

WHAT DOES A TYPICAL APPOINTMENT LOOK AND FEEL LIKE FOR A CUSTOMER? FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS TO THE SILVER SCREEN, DANIELLA ALONSO HAS MADE A NAME FOR HERSELF AMONGST THE HOLLYWOOD ELITE. FJORDE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SIT WITH DANIELLA AND FIND OUT WHAT MAKES THE ACTRESS REALLY TICK AND HER LATEST PROJECT PAUL BLART 2.

HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED IN ACTING? As a kid, I loved movies. So when I was about fifteen, I finally worked up the courage to ask a friend if he would introduce me to his manager. He said NO. But then he talked about me to her and set up a meeting. Tobe Gibson. And she signed me. That is how it all got started for me. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN AN ACTRESS? FROM WHERE DID YOU GET STARTED? I was always acting even before I knew what it was... at home, in school plays or summer acting schools but I started professionally when I was fifteen in New York. HOW MANY PARTS THAT YOU TRULY LOVE HAVE YOU BEEN IN SO FAR? I’ve loved every part I’ve ever played. I’m big on using every experience to learn and grow from good but especially the “bad”. IN HOW MANY FILMS YOU HAVE PERFORMED IN UP UNTIL NOW? WHAT WAS THE BEST EXPERIENCE? I do not know the exact number of films or TV shows I have been in. However, each one has it’s own experience, family and character I grew to love, and have a special place in my heart. I will say Revolution was one of the most fun and challenging roles I have ever had the luck to play. Everyday was an adventure and an opportunity to grow. TELL US ABOUT PAUL BLART 2, YOUR CURRENT PROJECT? Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 was an incredible experience. I got to work in what was one of the most beautiful hotels in the world, the WYNN Las Vegas. I got to work with some comedic geniuses daily and some of the kindest most generous people ever. Playing a character like Divina, who seemingly has it all together and then start her unraveling was incredible. WHAT KIND OF ROLES HAVE YOU PERFORMED THROUGHOUT YOUR CAREER? WHAT WOULD YOU GO BACK AND CHANGE IF YOU COULD? It has been a journey from when I first started and the only roles were the gangbanger, pregnant teen, and maid. Luckily, and with

hard work, I have been now able to play a doctor, therapist, lawyer, soldier, mother, wife, girl next door, mercenary to name a few...and yet as much as things have changed, there still is a long way to go in terms of roles for people of color. I would not change anything because I firmly believe that in everything there is a lesson in the good as well as the bad. HOW DIFFERENT IS IT TO ACT IN A MOVIE COMPARED TO A TV SERIES? I would say the major difference between movies and TV is time. In a movie, you might have a month to three month’s to prepare for a role but in TV you are lucky if you get a week and that well oiled machine will move whether you are prepared or not so be prepared! WHO IS YOUR INSPIRATION OR IDOL AND WHY? My grandmother is my inspiration and who I have always looked up to. She is the woman I strive to be. HOKU DREAMWEAR BY ANNA GILFILLAN HOKU DREAMWEAR IS SLEEPWEAR THAT CAPTURES THE MAGIC OF DREAMS, BOTH IN YOUR SLEEP AND IN REALITY. I CAUGHT UP WITH DESIGNER JO FLYNN TO DISCUSS THE NEW RANGE, HER UNIQUE JOURNEY AND WHAT INSPIRATION WE CAN ALL GAIN FROM JUST CLOSING OUR EYES AND DREAMING.

TELL ME A BIT ABOUT HOKU DREAMWEAR AND HOW IT CAME TO BE? It’s a bit of a long story that started the journey of Hoku. What now feels like a lifetime ago… I was trucking along in life and leading a path of what I thought were the ‘norms’ of society. I was busily ticking life’s little boxes - career. tick. relationship. tick. mortgage. tick. But I was really unhappy. After a few epiphanies and about a year after my 10 year relationship ended, I decided to quit my job, pack my belongings and I booked a one way ticket overseas. I had no idea what to expect, I just knew it was something I needed to do. When I returned to Australia, people I hadn’t spoken to in years contacted me to tell me they were following my journey and shared their stories with me - telling me that I had inspired them to just bite the bullet and go do things they had always thought about doing. I had no idea that people were following my journey from the other side of the world. This is how Hoku Dreamwear came about. I wanted to continue to encourage others to follow their dreams – no matter how small or large and continue to share my journey with others and have other people share their journey with Hoku.

I have always loved fashion and I recognised a gap in the market for sleepwear—I wanted to create something that didn’t actually look like pj’s. To be honest, I always felt a little embarrassed putting on store bought pj’s while I was travelling in and out of hostels. I felt many of the prints I came across were a bit too childlike or daggy for my taste, so the idea to create a range that you can wear comfortably in your sleep, or reality made sense to me. HOW DID YOUR FASCIATION FOR DREAMING COME ABOUT? Gosh, I don’t even know. It probably dates back to being a teeny tiny kid. I have a big imagination and have always come up with crazy ideas. I’ve always been a daydreamer and would often slink away and write stories, draw pictures, paint and create things based on the thoughts I was lost in. When it comes to dreaming in my sleep, my dreams have always been vivid and I dream up with all sorts of wild and wacky ideas. There have been many occasions where I happen to problem solve in my sleep and I often look up the meaning behind my dreams. Dreaming is so fascinating.

WHAT IS UNIQUE AND SPECIAL ABOUT YOUR PIECES? The 2015 summer collection has been inspired by moments in time, the journey – not about the destination. All the prints for this collection were taken in Maui, Hawaii. I have written a blog post about each image (available on my website) and the experiences I had during those moments. The stories aren’t going to change your life when you read them, but they talk about what happened and how I felt at that point in time. Layered under each print are my actual travel journal entries also relating to that moment, so you can see some faint messy handwriting if you look closely. YOU HAVE A BLOG TO SUPPORT YOUR BRAND, HOW IMPORTANT IS CREATING AN ONLINE PERSONA THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA CHANNELS FOR A FASHION BRAND? Social media is fantastic. An online presence gives the brand a personality and I think what I love most about it is that people can engage with Hoku. It builds trust in the brand and also gives people something to relate to – my blog is very down to earth, open and honest, what I share are moments that a lot of people have probably experienced for themselves.

Given that Hoku is only available to purchase online, the presence and online reputation of the brand is also vital. HOW IMPORTANT IS SUPPORTING MAKE-A-WISH ® FOUNDATION AS PART OF YOUR BUSINESS? AND WHY DID YOU PICK THIS CHARITY? I wanted to align my business with a charity and was looking for a charity with similar beliefs as Hoku – dreams and wishes turning into reality, no matter how small or large. After looking at the mission and purpose of a number of charities, I felt that Make-A-Wish® Australia sat closely with what I was trying to achieve. Make-A-Wish ® Australia helps sick children by granting their cherished wishes. I chose Make-A-Wish ® Australia as I want to be able to help others fulfil their dreams. WHAT DO YOU SEE FOR THE FUTURE OF HOKU DREAMWEAR? Hoku launched two days before Christmas last year, so it is still well and truly a baby. We have some big plans further down the track, however I am taking each day as it comes and learning along the way.

I am currently working on my winter collection for 2015 and also chatting to other dreamers about collaborating. The intention is I’ve made connections purely via social media to create a community of dreamers who share stories and inspire others, so collaborating channels which I never would have expected or made without platforms such as Instagram. with other people who have a story to tell will be part of the process and journey of Hoku. Lisa Taranto is one half of the team behind the boutique, having taken over ownership roughly four months ago. Lisa, and her longtime business partner, Bec, have transformed Swoon Lifestyle boutique into an enigmatic space that emanates a strong vision. The original owners of Swoon, designers themselves, saw Swoon as an opportunity to showcase their own designs, and support local talent. Different ventures and paths saw them having to sell the business. Lisa states that the owners very much the new owners to believe in their vision. It’s a passion that’s all too close to Lisa’s heart. “We love the philosophy behind it, supporting Australian designers, I think there’s a big gap for it,” she says. “At the moment there’s so much fast fashion, Zara

and Top shop and ASOS and all these massive brands are coming in and kind of taking over a lot of our fashion scene. I think we’ve got some amazing talent here, so we really aim to support that.” A local designer herself for a number of years, the philosophy behind Swoon is close to her heart. “I’m a massive supporter of Melbourne designers because I am one of us and we are the small guy, and I’m a big advocate for really well made products and an individual aesthetic. I love doing things that are a little bit different from what you get in your Topshop and your mainstream places,” she says. Lisa implores people to get behind local designers, for fear that if not recognised, “we’ll lose them”. “It is tough out there. It’s already a dying industry. I think if we don’t support them… We won’t find the next Sass

and Bide, Manning Cartel or Dion Lee. If we don’t support them and buy them, they won’t be around,” she warns. Swoon also serves to dispel the certain stigma against local, hand-made products lacking inferior quality compared to massproduced and recognised products. Lisa explains that products stocked in Swoon are carefully curated to show consumers some of the beautiful, thoughtfully prepared locally made creations. “It has to be a beautiful design, it has to be a great fabric, and a great finish. We’re really interested in high quality product,” she says. It’s important to the pair that customers are buying products that they realise are not “knocked off in the back yard and not very good quality”. Despite staying true to the boutique’s original philosophy, Lisa and Bec have endeavoured to “breathe new life” into the store. Originally, Swoon’s main focus was housing clothing. Today, Swoon Lifestyle represents a multibrand store, housing everything from clothing to homewares. “You can come in, you can have pieces for your home, pieces for you,” she says. The sheer unique nature of Swoon Lifestyle gives it a strong point of difference from any other chain, mainstream store. “We have a couple of really independent designs

that only stock with us. Some of them do quite a lot of customer made to order pieces. We’ve got a couple of selections in there that you won’t get anywhere else,” Lisa says. The store’s carefully curated designers produce everything from hand-sourced stones from the Middle East, to metal and mesh-studded jewellery. The duo also focus on creating a visual and emotional experience for shoppers. “Walking into the store, we want you to come in, have a cup of tea, we want you to be able to walk around and spend your time and be able to look at all our products”, she says. “We want the customer to come in, to touch and feel and play. Really be able to feel special. We don’t you to sit on line and buy all our stuff, we want you to come in.” In a shopper society dominated by fastfashion and chain labels, Swoon Lifestyle stands tall in the defence of home-grown talent. The pair are always looking for new designers with beautiful yet commercially viable product to support. BERLIN BAR 16 CORRS LANE MELBOURNE Established in 2000, the Berlin Bar is split into East and West Berlin, with each part of the bar embracing the theme of strict East Germany and colourful West Germany. As a warning, the small bar gets wildly busy on weekends and it is best enjoyed mid-week where the wait for drinks isn’t quite as long as it can stretch on a Saturday night.

The tiny little American bar is a throwback to earlier days and has their staff donned in white coats and a menu full of American classics, twisted to appeal to the Melbourne masses.

Many contributing factors have been suggested as causes to why there is such a disparity in the gender differences statistically. Men, in particular Australian men, have a very strong ethos of masculinity – “we don’t talk about our feelings because we’re men”. While women feel very free to vent their current frustrations (just take any snap look at a facebook newsfeed and see the amount of women vs. men venting their emotions will give you an idea), men very rarely do. The unspoken feel among men is that “you solve your own problems”. But if there is no positive solution easily forthcoming, men tend to gravitate to a negative solution as “the next logical step”.

Men are also more likely to then plan it out and then act on those plans. Letting men know that it is “Ok” to talk about stress and problems in their lives is a very important part of this – in particular for men to say this to other men. Men often feel more comfortable talking to another man in privacy if given the opportunity, keeping it “within the brothers” so as not to expose their perceived deficiencies to the women to whom they must still appear strong and manly. The campaign a few years back of getting people to ask one another “Are you ok?” actually has merit and it is a pity that the momentum was not carried forward. I spoke to a model I have worked with before as she formed an organization to raise awareness for depression and suicide in men after her own brother sadly took his life early last year at the age of 23. Called Kane’s Crusade, after her brother, the organization is run via its Facebook page and provides an open forum for both men to reach out if they need help or for friends and families to discuss ways of preventing and if too late, dealing with, suicide. It allows both men and women a chance to open up, without judgement and just have someone there to support and listen. Greeted by Luke and Tim, they immediately put you at ease like old friends do and welcome you to the Trailer Park. Once settled they give us the once over, running us through the menu and their delectable milkshakes but we’ll get to that. Looking around, the place is filled with laughter and friendly banter of old mates camped around the picnic table like on a Sunday afternoon get together. It’s this atmosphere that sets the tone for the Grand Trailer Park; the décor is outdoorcentred and refined with an outside/in motif. Set to a backdrop of fresh and vibrant music that continues to build its character.

With a recommendation from our charming hosts, we start our evening with a few milkshakes. The Kinder Surprise was a good blend of alcohol and shake making for a nice start to the night. And for the kid in you comes topped with a kinder surprise, that a little something extra to keep you going and of course to play with while you wait for your burgers to arrive. They say that the little things are what make a difference and this is no exception. And in this instance it was the refresher towel on the table, for some of you it won’t mean much but for other it’s the world and for us it was sign that a good burger was on the way. And that it was, having the Francis Underwood, a beef pattie teamed with American cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, American mustard and special sauce and complimented with a mac & cheese croquette, definitely for the hungry at heart. It was a good size and well put together so it doesn’t

fall apart in your hands, and any burger connoisseur will tell you this is a trait of a well-made burger. Severed up with a side of fat cut chips there wasn’t much more you could ask for. And after devouring such a tasty burger nothing more was needed. But it didn’t end there, while we had our fill and were more than content our lovely hosts persuaded us, very easily I might add, to sample the Waffle Stack – crunchy, cold and soft all come together to make a great dessert. All round a simple but delicious dessert that put us over the edge in a good way, a definite recommendation for any one travelling through the Grand Trailer Park. All in all, the Grand Trailer Park took simple flavours and brought them together to create a great burger in a great atmosphere, simply put homemade soul food. And for anyone looking for something new in their burger repertoire, this is a must.
