HOW TO:
HIDE AWAY BY: LAUREN ROBERTS
HOW TO CUT YOURSELF OFF TO RECHARGE AND GET BACK TO YOU.
LIFE IS OVERWHELMING. MAKING SURE YOU EAT WELL, GO TO THE GYM, SOCIALISE, DATE, BE A GOOD FRIEND, MOISTURISE, STUDY, WORK HARD, FOSTER A CREATIVE OUTLET, SPEND TIME WITH THE FAMILY AND MAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF IS TOO MUCH. THE CONSTANT DEMANDS OF PEOPLE AND TECHNOLOGY CAN GET OVERWHELMING AND THE URGE TO RUN AWAY CAN TAKE OVER. WELL, WHY NOT RUN AWAY? WHY NOT GET LOST? SOMETIMES, THE BEST THING TO DO IS TO LOSE YOURSELF IN ORDER TO RECHARGE YOUR DRAINED BATTERIES. BUT WHERE TO START? HERE!
1. Take a bushwalk without the temptation of range and spend a few hours alone with your own thoughts. Turn off the technology – no phone, no internet, no car; no excuses. Remember though, cutting yourself off is not the same as putting yourself in danger – stick to populated tracks or bring a friend (and resist the urge to Instagram a nature picture or ‘check in’).
4. Say no to going out. Make the
commitment to yourself to be a home-body for a fortnight. Get two weeks’ worth of early nights, make yourself your favourite meals and do all the things around the house you never get time for. Read the paper, do your washing, give yourself a face mask twice a week and abstain from the delicious temptation of alcoholic beverages. At the end of the fortnight, you’ll feel like a brand, shiny 2. Cook something from scratch. Make a pie new person – and your bank account will from the crust to the filling or pasta the way thank you. traditional Italian mothers have done since the beginning of time. Use a recipe book or a 5. Cut down on social media. Most people hand-written note. Spend the hours that you struggle to go a day without a status update or cook thinking about life. The deep soultweet. Try to cut it down, not cut it out of your searching that is inherently entwined in the life. No social media after 8pm weeknights creation process will surprise you. (who wants to read tweets counting down the seconds until Friday anyway?) or during the 3. Stop driving for a week. Instead, take working day (this might just increase your the bus, walk or cycle - spend the journey productivity, thus scoring you an amazing pay listening to a new playlist, people watching or increase. Thank me later). starting a new book. Breaking your routine, even in the simplest way, will change your 6. Take a road trip to an unknown day’s outlook. And arriving at work without destination. Decide north, south or inland. bitter road rage may just improve your Fill up the tank and drive. Stay in a town attitude. you would never have picked out of a tourist catalogue and involve yourself in a local community event – the less structured and planned your trip is the better.
Run away, get lost, recharge those drained batteries and forget about the overwhelming demands of the world.

ESCAPING THE WORLD, FINDING YOURSELF MILES AWAY FROM THE CENTRE OF IT ALL, LOSING YOURSELF, BEING OPEN TO EXPERIENCE, RATHER THAN PLANNING THE JOURNEY DOWN TO EVERY MINUTE DETAIL. HOW MANY OF YOU CAN REALLY SAY THAT YOU HAVE DONE THAT IN ITS ESSENCE?? LIVED FOR THE MOMENT INSTEAD OF MEETING EXPECTATIONS.
SUMMER 2014
Escaping the world, finding yourself miles away from the centre of it all, losing yourself, being open to experience, rather than planning the journey down to every minute detail. How many of you can really say that you have done that in its essence?? Lived for the moment instead of meeting expectations. This is a very fine filter most people have yet to cross over into; the notion that you don’t need to have it all planned out before you, that you can just get up and go without knowing what to expect and in turn allowing it all to unfold before you without the need to control any aspect of it and to engage in life with an open heart rather than to try to control it. Imagine now planning a holiday where the only person who is travelling is you and all you have to do is just pick a destination. As you travel there, all you are is “present”, “awake” and “alert”.
You do not travel recording anything and you have no preconceived notion of how it is going to pan out for you, all you are is open to experiences that will present themselves to you like small gifts, only because you are open to spontaneity, being non-judgmental and accepting in whatever form life presents itself as. The wisdom behind this concept is simple, allowing oneself to trust in life and in the goodness of it all, because by being open within yourself you are sending a message out there that you are now able to receive anything that may come your way and in whatever form and you allow myself to experience it. Just experience it, with nonattachment, with non-judgment, and with gratitude, because everything shows you something, teaches you something about yourself.
What kind of a journey or holiday would that be to you then, if you just got up and left and took it on with a higher mindset, magical, peaceful, like a nomad who doesn’t expect anything and realises there is no destination or real goal a such, that the important thing is that you are present to what is around you right now. Moving through life in such a way sometimes can be so memorable. Taking on a holiday with such an attitude can magnify the joy of it all a hundred fold, particularly when the people you meet and the times you spent just happened without ever knowing they would in the way you expected them to, which adds that extra special glow to it all. Hidden away, as a mindset really, nothing which can be seen is that possibility of people and places that you might come across which you might never find again, almost like a dream which you have and can never remember, such can be life in all its never ending possibilities.

WOMEN STYLE REUBEN CHEOK [WWW.REUBENCHEOK.COM]
WHITE SHIRT DRESS Resort or cruise wear is commonly marketed to northern hemisphere clients who vacate to warmer climates over the post-Christmas/ New Years period on holidays. For Aussies, that means this “year round” season collection is perfectly aligned to our inverse weather seasons. Resort wear is unique in its design and func-tion. Made from lightweight breathable materials like cotton, silk and poplin, they’re easy to clean, to pack and to wear without ironing. With temperatures soaring, the classic white shirt, revisited and reshaped into a dress is a cool, effortless chic that not only adds a touch of style, but can be practical as a sun protection. Whether worn over a black one piece swimsuit, or as an outer layer piece over

NAUTICAL The nautical theme is hardly new, but it is a staple and constantly evolving trend that floats through many Resort collections. This year, fashion designers put a buoyant “spin” on the classic nautical motifs such as marinière stripes, as featured in a daring fur pullover by Marc Jacbos. Other designers from Chanel to Marni to Chloé all featured sea-side inspired looks as well. Chanel’s relaxed, soft cream sleeveless top and long flowing skirt combo was teamed up with their trademark string of pearls, dangling around the décolletage like thick rope. Chloé’s navy blue

Valentino’s blue, red and white striped half-sleeved top was teamed up with a petrol coloured pants with islets adorned along the pant pockets and waist. The colour was a refreshing twist that predominately features navy blue and white, but kept it in line with the overall nautical theme. The take from these Resort collections? Relaxed, slightly wide leg pants, free flowing materials and an up-dated marinière stripes will make you look the part on that coastal

MEN STYLE CHECKED TAILORING Checked tailoring and suiting is the latest trend to emerge from fashion runway shows from all around the world. With men becoming more adventurous and daring with their formal wear, unconventional suit colour-ings like khaki, brown and burgundy have been ushered into the spotlight as men wanting to stand out from the crowd of monotony. And who would usher in an unconventional suit colourings AND checked tailoring? None other than the king of tailoring, Tom Ford. Showcasing a stylish collection that
was heavily influenced by earlier eras, warm tonal colours like tan, oatmeal and brown featured alongside large panes of checks in tawny brown, shades of chocolate in Prince of Wales checked patterns. Continuing with the tonal theme, Ford teamed up his suits with a mixture of monochromatic shirts. Valentino’s collection included a grey and sand coloured checked suit, striking checked capes with black panelling and a blackwatch tartan print suit. But the stand out piece was a bold, black and white chess-board styled suit. The striking contrast in white and black tones was sharp, eye-catching but extremely wearable.
The international fashion press have been championing the revival of the checked pattern in menswear, with Details stating: “traditional plaids, checks, houndstooth are once again indispensable in a modern man’s wardrobe.” So whether that be tailored pieces of blazers or trousers in fetching heritage check prints and patterns, or the full checked suit tailoring, it’s a must have for every fashion forward man.
BERMUDA SHORTS Bermuda shorts are all the rage this summer! Making a big splash at Milan Menswear Week to London and Paris, the long, large, voluminous above-the-knee style shorts have been seen from Salvatore Ferragamo to Alexander McQueen to Comme des Garçon. Extremely practical for the warmer season, they are also extremely versatile. Teamed with jackets to overcoats to pullovers to smart tailored blazers, Bermuda shorts will be the essential item to hit menswear this summer.
In an array of colours and materials, even luxury labels have jumped in the bandwagon. Balenciaga’s dark somber shorts complemented well with formal leather ankle boots and a raincoat overcoat. Damir Doma’s muted sand coloured offerings were slight more tailored in width but matched with the same hue of a slightly oversized zipped up Bomber-style jacket completed a more subdued and casual look. Jill Sander’s all white affair took formal wear to the hipsters, with a white buttoned shirt with a loosely fitted white formal suit jacket. With white leather shoes, the only contrast were the black socks and laces.
Whatever the volume, whatever the colour, Bermuda shorts are all about casual style, but ultra comfortable. By pushing the boundaries of smart casual styling with a conventional suit jacket or blazer in the same col-our tone, it states a sense of blasé attitude that speaks volumes and makes any man stand out from the rest this summer.

IT IS SOMETIMES ASTONISHING TO LOOK BACK A FEW YEARS, TO THE PRE-SOCIAL MEDIA ERA AND LOOK AT THE WAY WE INTERACTED, SHOPPED AND GENERALLY SPEAKING ORGANISED OUR LIVES. BY KRISTINA BOND

Sadly, often one would meet nothing but disappointment as that special something is nowhere to be found. Fast-forward to 2014, where the world is literally at your fingertips – Facebook newsfeeds are filled with vast amounts of over-sharing, Instagram is bombarded with people gloating over their latest and trendiest purchases and the Blogaratti are posting daily about how to style yourself and where to buy the items they are wearing – complete with links to the exact page you can purchase those items. And being as time-poor as we all are these days, I for one welcome this overabundance of useful information with open arms. Luna & Zarr is one such hidden gem I recently stumbled upon. Two designers, Chloe Wedgwood and Ashley Bellino joined forces to design a line of jewellery and accessories which is stylishly modern, intricately designed, reasonably priced and crafted with high quality materials by skilled artisans. The brand theme very much-so plays an important role in the design of the pieces, Chole describes “Luna & Zarr is the perfect balance between male and female, both fierce and elegant. The name, Luna & Zarr is synonymous with the concept behind the brand; Luna, coming from Lunar, roman goddess of the moon and Zarr, a play on the word Tsar a Russian king. The concept being that in each piece there is an element of both femininity and masculinity.”
The concept came together based on their shared love for fashion and jewellery, “Creating interesting pieces that we love and seeing how wonderfully people react and respond – seeing how much they love it, the genuine surprise perhaps that two people with no formal jewellery design qualification can create something so appealing and fashion forward” says Chloe. The inspiration for their designs comes from historic influences like Egyptian, Greek and Medieval cultures and putting a modern twist to them. Materials are sourced from Indonesia, Europe and China, and brought together and made in Bali. Chloe and Ashley’s personal style also contributes to the design process, “We both like being able to dress things up and down through layering and accessories. There’s nothing better than a crisp white t-shirt and leather pants or jeans glammed up with stacks of rings, bracelets or statement necklace. Although no matter what we wear you can always find us in Bali walking over pot holes to our favorite restaurants and shopping dens still donning a cluster of strike and armour rings and a ripping chain to match”.

Chloe and Ashley both work in marketing, which means they can use their expert knowledge to market the Luna & Zarr brand. For them, the most important thing is to
create good quality, eye-catching designs, and then the marketing strategies come into play, “being proactive about getting it in the public eye, putting our marketing and business skills to good use is really important! Social media is huge for us so keeping up with Facebook, Instagram and bloggers is just as important as print publications and fashion magazines”. Photographer Filip Konikowski / Stylist Ben Anderson / Hairstylist Joe Robles / Makeup Artist & Hairstylist Kylie French / Model Sarah [FRM], & Stephanie [BRAZEN]
The inaugural collection is named Contradiction. The range is inspired by themes of armour and weaponry. “It’s an eclectic mix of materials from sterling silver, yellow gold and rose gold to lava beads, python skin and black ebony wood. You can wear as statement pieces or mix, match and layer to create more drama and embody your own unique style” says Chloe. The designs which the brand has to offer are distinctively unique, which is exactly what sets Luna & Zarr apart from the competition – “It’s edgy and elegant at the same time. It’s rare to go through the day without someone commenting on a piece we’re wearing”. The girls also pay attention to the finer details which contribute to a exceptional customer experience, “We have a very open approach, we are open to making custom pieces if something is not in their size, or colour. We include handwritten notes with every order and want people to feel connected to the brand rather than an anonymous online order. We want the whole experience from first point of contact to opening their beautifully wrapped packed to be positive and enjoyable”.
The duo has some exciting plans for the future, “We’re looking forward to growing our range, travelling more and increasing our number of loyal followers/lovers of the brand. – In our upcoming ranges we have some exciting new ideas we can’t wait to share with you! We can’t say too much yet but it will show our jewelry becoming functional as well as stunning!” and they are not ruling out extending the range beyond accessories – “Chloe has always had a strong passion for home wares so that is on the cards as well”. And while the range is only sold online at www.lunaandzarr.com there are plans to expand, “We will have stockists eventually, but we are being very selective, only wanting to find stores that suit our style and quality philosophy”. So instead of spending Saturday arvo trawling crowded streets and stores, next time you need that special piece why not trawl the wild world of online stores to find your special hidden gem.

A GENTLEMAN’S BEST FREIEND
IF YOU ARE A TRUE GENTLEMAN WHO APPRECIATES THE IDEA OF A DRAM OF WHISKY AND LUXURY MEN’S SHOES YOU WILL WANT TO DISCOVER THIS HIDDEN GEM IN SMITH STREET, FITZROY.
Passionate about men’s style, brothers, Christopher and Nick Scherf saw glaring hole in men’s footwear in Australia and often being frustrated by the lack of options, Inspired them to Open the door to their men’s shoe store in December 2012, providing a range of quality shoes that until now, could only be found in the northern hemisphere. Double monk being a classic style of men’s shoe with a feature double buckle was the creativeness behind the naming of their store along with the two brothers opening the store together. The fit out of the shop celebrates classic design and workmanship in a thoroughly modern context. With a very specific vision when it came to fitting out the store of conveying the classic and luxurious nature of the products but with a contemporary edge. The brothers wanted to create a space that they would shop in themselves and echoed the view of the shoes. An exciting concept was blending their love of whisky with shoes by having a bar at the back of the shop, to enjoy a drink on a Friday afternoon. Cheers to that The space is made up of; Parquet flooring which was salvaged from an 18th century European castle, floor to celling shelving, orginal metal-pressed ceiling, rolling ladders from a company still making them in New York since 1905 and taxidermy decorating the walls. Growing up with the philosophy of investing in quality over quantity the brothers developed a love for men’s classic shoes that will last decades and continue to look stylish at the same time. They are both proud to offer a bespoke shoe service in conjunction with G.J. Cleverley of London. G.J. Cleverley have represented the finest in bespoke shoemaking for over 50 years and they are privileged to be their Australian representative.

Twice a year Cleverley send out their creative director George Glasgow Jr and master shoemaker Teemu Leppanen for what is known as a ‘trunk show’. During their visit the team from Cleverley offer bespoke fittings, taking a variety of measurements in order to make a unique last that reproduces the shape of the customer’s foot. The first pair of bespoke shoes takes 12 months to complete. The lasts are then kept at Cleverley’s workshop and hung alongside the lasts of Bryan Ferry, Ralph Lauren, Charlie Watts and Prince Charles. The next trunk show at Double Monk will be on the 14th and 15th of March. Double Monk has one of most comprehensive selections of high quality shoes in the world. They offer a complete in-store fitting service in order to find the shoe best suited to any given customer; something that is obviously impossible when shopping online, Also offering a shoe repair and conditioning service with the help of an in-house cobbler. The Brothers frequently find that guys are often unsure of how best to care for their shoes so they are always happy to offer any tips and advice that may be of assistance. Christopher believes “Our shoes represent the pinnacle of men’s footwear and we would like to think that our knowledge of the shoes does justice to their quality”. “With the movement towards sustainability and artisanship, people are more conscious of investing in quality. We are finding that there is an ever-growing group of young guys with a real interest in the beauty and durability of well made shoes”. For a contemporary, luxury retail experience you can find Double Monk at 53 Smith Street, Fitzroy, Victoria. They are adding the finishing touches to their website which will be complete in the coming months. In the meantime you can admire their products and style, on Tumblr- www.doublemonk.com and via Instagram- @dblmnk. Enjoy Gentleman!

NO LIGHTS NO LYCRA BY HANDE CERKEZ
BREATHING NEW LIFE BACK INTO THE ART OF DANCE, NO LIGHTS NO LYCRA (NLNL) BRINGS THE SIMPLE FOUNDATIONS OF CAREFREE FUN BACK INTO DANCE. FREE FROM LIGHT, LYCRA, TEACHERS, STEPS TO LEARN OR SPECIFIC TECHNIQUE, NO LIGHTS NO LYCRA IS ALL ABOUT FREE FLOWING MOVEMENT.
Between an act which is conducted in an intoxicated state or as an activity learnt in class, dance has lost its freedom, its communication and its spirituality. Today those who ‘dance’ are either embarrassed, selfconscious, have an expectation to uphold, are trying to impress someone or are completely under the influence to the point that they don’t care. As individuals we never seem to dance for the pure and simple pleasure of it.
place in Sydney, Perth, Adelaide, New York, San Francisco, Berlin, London, Glasgow and Barcelona, to name a few. No Lights No Lycra advocators across the globe are raving about its merits. “This is a pure and spiritual experience, releasing that urge to shake and doing it without dealing with the social nuances of dancing in public.” Greenpointers Blog, Brooklyn NY.
Having noticed that dance was beginning to lose its role as an act of human expression, “Many of the constraints of our modern classical dance students Alice Glenn and Heidi society can be transcended through dancing Barrett started the No Lights No Lycra dance in this environment, gender and sexuality community in Melbourne in 2009. become irrelevant, and space is negotiated without words or power struggle.” Laura “No Lights No Lycra is a friendly, nonMorgan, No Lights No Lycra Dancer, threatening, alcohol and drug free event, Melbourne. where you can shake out the stress of the week, experience new tunes, lose yourself in the music while working up a sweat,” say Glenn and Barrett. “With the lights out, people are truly free to move and a real sense of unity and communion is achieved. This is a daggy, non-pretentious place to completely be yourself.” A space where you can completely let go, No Lights No Lycra has become a global dance community providing an inclusive and non-judgmental place for people to explore this practice. With a belief that everyone can dance, No Lights No Lycra bring people together to experience the freedom of self expression and joy. Since its unofficial beginning in Alice and Heidi’s living room, with only a few friends dancing their hearts out in a dark music filled room, the movement has since gained traction across the globe. The No Lights No Lycra Fitzroy and East Brunswick dance studios, provide a free-flowing weekly dancing experience. This emergence of a strong dance community has since taken off in other cities around the Australia and the world. No Lights No Lycra classes are now taking
The worldwide success and following of No Light No Lycra is evident in its universal notion of dancing simply for the fun of it. By completely letting go of all superficial boundaries, No Lights No Lycra allows its patrons to invigorate their inner eclectic dancers. If you’d like to completely let go, shake away the stress of your day and lose yourself in the music and your physical body, then No Lights No Lycra is calling your name. There are two Melbourne locations, Fitzroy and East Brunswick. There is no need to book a place, you just need to show up and be ready to dance. Each session costs five dollars and takes place in a dim room, allowing you to truly dance without worrying what you look like. No Lights No Lycra is an inclusive event, open to patrons of all ages, genders, backgrounds and demographics. ALFIO ART
ALFIO ART BY JAMIE-MAREE SHIPTON

SUMMER 2014
MELBOURNE HARBOURS AN EXPANSIVE OFFERING OF CREATIVE TALENTS THAT CAN BE FOUND BOTH ON DISPLAY IN THE CITY’S NUMEROUS GALLERIES, BUT ALSO IN THOSE TUCKED AWAY, ALMOST HARD TO REACH, AND FOUND ONLY BY-WORDOF-MOUTH, PLACES. IN THESE PLACES AND VENUES ONE CAN FIND THOSE GEMS AMONGST A CREATIVE NICHE, THAT SERVE UP SOMETHING SEPARATE FROM THE MAINSTREAM, AND SOMETHING YOU MAY FIND AND NEVER COME ACROSS AGAIN.
Local Artist Richard ‘Alfio’ Tomaino, or Rick as he likes to be called, knows all to well the hidden away treasures of Melbourne, he tells me he believes “Melbourne has always harboured a sense of creativity and free thought. It’s a part of our subculture. Walking through any number of the CBD’s alleyways, alcoves or seemingly dingy underbellies, one will more often than not find nests for hives of expression”. Moreover he says that he has found no other places on his travels that encourages an open forum for sensitive issues through art, like Melbourne.
evident in the eye contact, breath, body proximity and lips of passengers that inspired him. He describes it as being “almost like a silent cinema”. Perhaps then this place is not hidden but momentary, and this momentary experience is certainly something that is rising in popularity, for example the increase of “pop-up” events such as exhibitions, shops, food stalls and the like.
Similarly the deliverance of creative expression that touches on certain issues that are sometimes considered confronting are thus often exhibited in the niche tucked away And alike all of us Melbournians, once we find galleries of Melbourne. Something that Rick a hidden away place that is conducive to our suggests shouldn’t always be the case. creative minds or gives us that feeling of being “Ultimately, if you’re going to share an involved at some core level with the city, we opinion, why not have it in a place worth tend to return and indeed Rick is the same. remembering. Art is an unrestricted voice. why whisper it in the back of the room, he “One place which has really embedded says”. itself in me forever, is the train carriages of Melbourne Metro”, he says.
He continues to express how this public space indeed fostered hidden modes of inspiration for him, saying, “spending the better part of 10 years on public transport I became intimately acquainted with vague, expressionless stares donned by all commuters. With a million thoughts, worries, troubles, hopes and history floating behind eyes that never smile.” It is in the subtlest of gestures, or in other terms the hidden modes of conversation
But at least these things are being encountered, displayed, projected, discussed, and shown somewhere, even if they are in the back rooms of hidden pop-up art spaces that Melbourne so often conjures up for it’s locals. Rick also discusses how leaving Melbourne can often open up the hidden creative expressions within ones own mind. His own process could only really be translated once he had the chance to develop and emotionally digest the context and situations within

which he was being thrust into, and therefore representing in his art. He suggest’s they were hidden away, but for a purpose. Overall the hidden artistic spaces of Melbourne, alongside the momentary pop-up exhibitions and the more prominent display venues, helps viewers to consider the issues that are delicate and often fearful to discuss. Rick explains it is in the refusal to discuss these things that true art can often flourish, bringing to the forefront all things hidden, even if for a short while. “To me art always attacks where social modesty dare not follow. It asks the hard questions and causes dramatic shifts in perspective. Ultimately Melbourne has proved itself a place of hidden and momentary artistic experiences that inspire something in us that makes us want to return, even though it may not be there again. Likewise walking down the same old routes can often conjure surprises in the forms of pop-up artistic locations that transform the mundane. One can never really know what is around the corner of the tangle of the inner city streets and lanes, and even if you lose your way you will most likely find something. Whether or not you can, or will, find it again however is always the true experience.

EVERLASTING REST BY JON LEE
“OH, HERE WILL I SET UP MY EVERLASTING REST, AND SHAKE THE YOKE OF AUSPICIOUS STARS, FROM THIS WORLD-WEARIED FLESH. EYES, LOOK YOUR LAST. ARMS, TAKE YOUR LAST EMBRACE.” ROMEO & JULIET ACT 5 SCENE 3
FORWARD: THIS PIECE IS THE RELEASATION OF A SERIOUS PROBLEM THAT HAS BEEN SHELTERED FROM US. DURING THE PRODUCTION OF THE PHOTOEDITORIAL “SAY SOMETHING, ROMEO” IT WAS DECIDED THAT THIS PIECE WOULD
Many contributing factors have been suggested as causes to why there is such a disparity in the gender differences statistically. Men, in particular Australian men, have a very strong ethos of masculinity – “we don’t talk about our feelings because we’re men”. While women feel very free to vent their current frustrations (just take any snap look at a facebook newsfeed and see the amount of women vs. men venting their emotions will give you an idea), men very rarely do. The unspoken feel among men is that “you solve your own problems”. But if there is no positive solution easily forthcoming, men tend to gravitate to a negative solution as “the next logical step”.
Men are also more likely to then plan it out and then act on those plans. A factor coming in here is that there is less fear of physical pain – a kind of macho recklessness if you Originally when I decided to do this shoot I will. As a result, men are more likely to wanted to theme it on Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo choose more direct, and unfortunately more and Juliet. However on the day before the likely to be successful, means of suicide such shoot I heard the song by A Great Big World as hanging, firearms, car exhaust, poisoning and Christina Aguilera, “Say Something”. I and physical suicide (jumping in front of a found that the song could be interpreted in train/off a bridge). While women will also many ways, including that of saying goodbye attempt suicide, they are far more likely to to those we love, or even a person saying notify someone of what they have done and goodbye to their own life. I then decided to thus have time for intervention to occur. In my focus on the aspect of male suicide in Romeo practice as an emergency doctor the number and Juliet and work on that theme instead. The of females to males presenting with suicide images often show Romeo holding a gun and attempts is easily 5 to 1, if not more – partly Juliet being somewhat blissfully unaware of because males who are serious about it most the violence that lurks there until it is too late. often succeed the first time they attempt it. ACCOMPANY IT.
And this is the problem with male suicide. In Australia, almost 80% of all suicides are male and the number one killer of men in the age under 44. Despite these somewhat alarming statistics, very little has been done to raise awareness and hence combat this problem.
So what can be done? It is important to recognize potential risk factors. Things such as recent relationship breakdown, exposure to suicide (friend or family member), alcohol use, financial crises, social isolation, rural
location and access to firearms have all been recognized as important potential risk factors. Letting men know that it is “Ok” to talk about stress and problems in their lives is a very important part of this – in particular for men to say this to other men. Men often feel more comfortable talking to another man in privacy if given the opportunity, keeping it “within the brothers” so as not to expose their perceived deficiencies to the women to whom they must still appear strong and manly. The campaign a few years back of getting people to ask one another “Are you ok?” actually has merit and it is a pity that the momentum was not carried forward. I spoke to a model I have worked with before as she formed an organization to raise awareness for depression and suicide in men after her own brother sadly took his life early last year at the age of 23. Called Kane’s Crusade, after her brother, the organization is run via its Facebook page and provides an open forum for both men to reach out if they need help or for friends and families to discuss ways of preventing and if too late, dealing with, suicide. It allows both men and women a chance to open up, without judgement and just have someone there to support and listen. To find out more about Kane’s Crusade, please check out the link below: www.facebook.com/ kanescrusade Maybe it’s time to stop keeping the issue of depression and suicide in men Hidden Away. Jon Lee is a Melbourne based fashion photographer and makeup artist who also works as a fully qualified emergency department doctor and has treated many attempted suicide cases in his 14 years of practice.

FOR FRONT MAN SIMON JONES, IT SEEMS THAT THE CURRENT MUSIC LANDSCAPE HAS BECOME MORE RECEPTIVE TO NEW MUSIC, AS IF ITS BECOME AN ‘IN VOGUE’ THING. WITH SUCH A PROLONGED PERIOD BETWEEN THEIR FIRST AND SECOND ALBUMS, IT IS NO DOUBT-DAUNTING COMING BACK INTO THE MUSIC SCENE. AS JONES DETAILS, ‘THERE’S SO MANY GREAT NEW BANDS RISING IN POPULARITY, MEANING THERE’S SO MUCH MORE COMPETITION NOW.’ BY HANDE CERKEZ

Although Post Paradise was seen as ‘the little album that could’ gaining organic attention amongst fans and media, Real Feel was a longer process. As the band took their time with their second release, they wanted to try something new, go a little further and produce something they really liked. Ensuring that each sound was perfected and grasped wholly, their intention was to provide listeners with something they would resonate with and get behind. This intention is no doubt evident within the album.

Despite this, for Simon Jones the most exciting thing about making and recording music is having his songs get heard by others. As the front man explains, ‘Having these songs that have been living in your head for

Real Feel, was not only recorded over a three year period, but it was also across the globe in multiple studios and hotel rooms. For Simon Jones the most influential of these places was Tokyo, Japan. For Jones, the bustling Comparing both albums, The Holidays’ sound city seemed to fit the music in his head so perfectly. As he explains; has definitely evolved over these tree years. Although not entirely in line with the current “I went there and didn’t see another white music scene, the concept for Real Feel as person for three days and I literally felt like Simon explains was to incorporate ‘dreamy I was in another planet. It’s so cool and hazy sounds, fuzzy guitars, strange synths exciting. I knew I had to convert the city into and slower hip-hop beats. Voices Drifting is my music. The entire place kinda felt like most fitting to this concept and does well at a dream world. There was nothing I didn’t depicting Simon’s intention with the overall like about it. I liked that felling of how alien album. I was. There was no familiarity and it was a complete culture shock.” Coming from an artistic point of view, Jones explains how within the current music scene, Set to tour Australia in March, Jones is music in a weird spot where there is hardly excited and looking forward to reconnecting anything ‘new’: with most places across the tour which “It’s more about who is the best at combining they haven’t been to in a while. Feeling that two elements and making a new hybrid. That’s Real Feel is a more mature album, Jones is adamant that it will resonate with their fans what we’re selling, the holiday sound. The that have hopefully matured in the time that tone and the feeling, it’s this happy-sad sort they’ve been away. As well as their original of feeling. It’s not the specifics of it but more fans, The Holidays hope to also appeal to a the general feel of the music. What I look for is the ingredients for a track. Basically it’s like new wave of fans through their older Post Paradise tracks as well as their new sounds cherry picking a few of your favourite things to make something you’re really happy with.” across Real Feel.

SHAHID KHAN HAS A RESUME TO DIE FOR. HE HAS PRODUCED ALBUMS FOR JENNIFER HUDSON, TINIE TEMPAH AND LEONA LEWIS TO NAME A FEW. IN 2012 HE CO-PRODUCED AND CO-WROTE THE DEBUT ALBUM OF A VERY GOOD FRIEND OF HIS, EMELI SANDÉ THE AWARD-WINNING OUR VERSION OF EVENTS. This year will see him hitting up Australia for the first time on the stage at Future Music Festival. We caught up to discuss the concept behind his new album, his bond with Emeli Sandé and his plans to take on Hollywood. FJORDE: What has a day in the life of Naughty Boy consist of- what have you done today?
NB: I used to be scared of the idea of being famous. But because I’m so passionate about music, initially I didn’t really do any about the concept behind the album- where did interviews. I think its important to create the idea come from and what were some of the relationships with your audience and as a musician its best to do that by showing your main inspirations behind it? face. But. I do still think its a dangerous thing NB: Well one of the first and longest jobs I and when celebrities take themselves too had was that I used to work at a hotel- I was seriously. I am opening up more butI definitely a waiter there. It was a luxury hotel, a 5 star don’t want to be everywhere. Just a bit of hotel. I was always amazed because Madonna quality control with everything I do. used to go there and President Obama and F: I read that you are interested in producing I used to spend quite a lot of time serving film soundtracks- what makes you so breakfast to people and after awhile I kept interested in going down that path? thinking how lonely these people are and depressed. But they have that money. So I NB: I’ve always been told that my music started playing around with the concept then. should be in a film and I think that comes It was always in my head. The hotel is like Fame. Everyone wants to be famous bus once down to how I think of music. So I would like to actually do a film, rather than it juts being in you’ve got it you could loose it. You know my head- just see what happens. I would love like, check in and check out. Then the whole to do some big Hollywood film- that would be Hotel California thing and yeah, that’s where amazing. the idea for the album came from. It made it easier for the producer and I to make the F: Any film that you wish you could have album with a concept. done the soundtrack for? F: You once said ‘I’m not just a producer – I’m a director too’ what did you mean by this? and why did you think thats important when producing an album?
NB: When I said that I didn’t mean like a film director, I mean it in a visual way. I think NAUGHTY BOY: Well I’ve been in the of my music visually so when I make it I studio today and I had to go to the dentist. So I visualise it as well in my head so it helps to guess it’s been good and bad create the mood, it helps to create a concept. It’s like your writing a character F: And your coming to Australia in March for the Future Music Festival- what are you F: You’ve worked alongside the likes of Ed looking forward most about touring Australia? Sheeren, Gabrielle and Emeli Sandé on the album as well as Katy Petty, Lily Allen and NB: Yeah it’s my first time in Australia so I’m Britney Spears for other projects, who has pretty excited. I’m looking forward to being been your favourite to collaborate with? close to the beach and meeting my Australian fans- getting some sun of course. In London NB: Well its Emeli, always. We have such a that’s a rare thing. I love the Australian accent, good working relationship and she’s so special I grew up with Neighbours and Home and as an artist and we’re good friends which is Away. I’d love to go to Ramsey Street and good because we’re so busy now as I’ve just meet up with Harold. started her next record. F: Yes you can do a tour- Harold’s awesome! So what can fans expect from your show?
F: Is there anyone you would really love to work with in the future?
NB: I want to bring the Hotel Cabana show on the road. I want it to be like a hotel band kind of thing. I want to bring life to this hotel. But yeah I like to think that the shows here are done really well and the fans have been so supportive. I think with the hip hop songs its easy to perform them and it appeals to whole range of people.
NB: Yeah, I’d love to work with Machlemore... and Adele! That would be awesome.
F: Congratulations on the success of your debut album last year, Hotel Cabana- Tell us 90
