SPRING CLEAN YOUR LIFE BY: LAUREN ROBERTS

WINTER IS THE TIME FOR GATHERING. WE GATHER JUMPERS, PAMPHLETS FOR SUMMER HOLIDAYS, ADDICTIONS TO NEW TELEVISION SHOWS AND AN AFFECTION FOR HEARTY ITALIAN PASTAS AND TIMTAMS. SHAKE IT OFF; THE SEASON OF FLOWERS IS HERE – AND HERE ARE SOME SIMPLE STEPS TO HELP SPRING CLEAN YOUR LIFE.
Shake it off; the season of flowers is here – and here are some simple steps to help Spring clean your life.
I. Start with your wardrobe – anything that you haven’t worn in six months and don’t plan on wearing in the next week, give to charity. Even your old ball dress. It’s pink, it’s frilly and it will make a 16-year-old with a limited budget and a love of tulle lot happier than said ball dress is making your wardrobe. II. Next step? Clear out your social networks. Stop following people on Twitter whose comments no longer interest you or Instagrammers whose photos you can’t remember ever liking. Having 678 Facebook friends might have once been the very definition of cool, but if you only care about the lives of 20 of them - it’s time to cull the list. Remove anyone who you would ignore if you saw in public, bores you, or that you have to scroll through three photos to recognise.
WINTER 2014
III. Change up the printed photos that you have hanging in frames. We live in the iPhone era – where the delightful photographs of our lives reside in our mobile devices. Sift through your camera reel, print out a memories, buy some new frames and you will be surprised by how fresh your house suddenly feels. IV. Sign yourself up to do some volunteer work. Been meaning to donate blood? Make an appointment. Wanting to give back to the community? Coach a sports team. Animal lover? Foster a dog from a shelter. That warm, fuzzy feeling that comes from making the world a better place will clear your brain. V. Cut your TV time in half. Someone delightfully wise once told me that if you haven’t got enough hours in your day; stop watching TV. You will be surprised by how many extra hours of sleep you are able to justify a night, how much further into your novel you get, the extra conversations you have with your housemates and the stack of homework which you suddenly are able to get on top of.
VI. Stop making plans with friends to catch up for meals. This doesn’t mean stop making plans with friends; it means start making plans to do activities instead of getting stuck in the rut of bonding over food. Go rock climbing, take a run around King’s Park, enrol in a cocktail class, cycle down the coast or cover yourselves in bubble-wrap and attempt to shoot your nearest and dearest with balls filled with paint.
IX. Do a budget. Christmas will be here in a few months closely followed by the temptation to run away for a Summer holiday. Plan your expenses, write down how you are spending (do you really need two soy lattes a day?) and figure out how your finances are adding up. Not only will you feel more organised, but you will be able to visualise all the good things coming your way a little better.
X. Change your work-out routine. Are you bored and unmotivated for the gym? Change gyms. If you’re committed to the gym, change know. There is no use holding onto your first ever pay check or stack of forms you have kept classes. Start a kick-boxing class, attempt for the car that you sold in 2007. Getting your circuit, run around a lake instead of on a paperwork in order is akin to getting your life treadmill, cycle to work or learn to fence. Something that has you feeling energised in order. and motivated will help you make the VIII. Take everything out forget to call the people that matter, treat that you don’t use every day and pop and yourself to a bath every so often and laugh fully-prepared gym bag in the boot just in loudly over anything that makes you happy. case the need arises. A SIMPLE TRUTH TO AWAKEN TO BY: GEORGE SERAPHIM
LOOK WITHIN YOURSELVES FOR THE ANSWERS THAT YOU HAVE ALWAYS YEARNED TO FIND THE TRUTH FOR. MEDITATION IS A POWERFUL TOOL GIVEN TO ALL OF US, WHICH IN ITSELF HARBOURS SO MANY POSITIVE AND LIFE CHANGING BENEFITS.
16
W W W. FJ O R D E M A G A Z I N E . C O M
Meditation, if done correctly and with discipline and care, enables you to calm your thought patterns so much that you begin to feel the oneness that is the highest truth which all of us have within us. It is our thoughts that distract us from the eternal peace that exists within our hearts and all of us yearn to find this eternal peace no matter who we are or who we think we are. By meditating at least 15 minutes a day you begin to disengage from mindless thought patterns and in essence you are training yourself each and every day to discover your true sense of self from which so many gifts can be unlocked and discovered. The truth is that you are a spiritual being inside a physical body. Unfortunately, most people are not able to distinguish that this is the case. This is why the spiritual realm for most people is something that isn’t dealt with very often. Once you discover through meditation that you are a spiritual entity existing within a physical body, you will begin to realise that nothing can stop you from becoming anything that your energy can will yourself to become.
The spiritual entity that exists within you is your holy spirit, which is at one with the universe and at one with the divine power. Through meditation, you begin to disengage from all the limiting belief systems that to this day herald patterns of self-destruction and disengagement from the spiritual being, which is your higher self. Meditate at least 15 minutes a day to become aware of the spirit that exists within you, by stilling your mind to such a degree that you can begin to intimately communicate with this source that exists within you. All the answers exist entirely within. Once we begin to unlock them we feel more alive, calmer, more at peace within ourselves and the distractions that our thoughts used to once have upon us begin to slowly disengage from our brain and we feel left highly attuned to the spirit within us. The more we can attune ourselves through meditation to our eternal spirit the more evolved we become as human beings existing on earth. This is a path to peace and subsequently to world peace as more and more people awaken to this simple truth.

WHITE COLLAR
BEADING
Yes, the white shirt is back. Better than before! In a borrowed-from-your-banker boyfriend statement shirting and dresses created from crisp poplins reinvent a basic. The cotton button-down never had it so good. Great examples from Balenciaga, Christian Dior, Valentino, Donna Karan and Hermės – just to name a few.
Yep, beading is back! Hand crafted garments that create an almost 3D effect have hit the catwalks, perfect for that special occasion this spring/Summer! For inspiration check out Vera Wang, Bottega Veneta, Christian Dior, Dolce & Gabbana and Burberry Prorsum.
SPRING 2014
FANTASTIC FLORALS
FRINGE FESTIVAL
METALLIC FINISHING
Every Spring/Summer we see the reinvention of the floral print. Colours from all sides of the palette! Realist depictions, needlepoint connotations and painterly petals appeared like so many dutiful perennials, ready to take minimalist to task. My favorite – Aberta Ferretti.
Hippies at heart take heed, the fringe is making a return and it’s not coming back quietly! Worn as a neck accessory, inspired by Moroccan throws, on skirts, ponchos and headdresses, this confetti-effect is certainly proving it’s versatility! My favorite – Emilio Pucci.
Amazing silver and gold metallic finishing on garments have made a sparkle to remember! Manmade fabrics that are taking over the catwalk will entice your wardrobe and give it that extra Spring/Summer sparkle that is needed! In times of festivities, this trend is definitely worthwhile taking in consideration! Amazing styles already for sale at retail stores such as SABA, Manning Cartell and many more!

JO MALONE ENGLISH PEAR & FREESIA $80/30ML
www.jomalone.com.au
Springtime is one heck of a season. I for one do a little bit of a boogie when the sun chucks his snapbacks on and throws us that sunshine party we had been waiting since February to see. It truly is a glorious time – visually and nasally. Because I am very led by my nose, I wanted to share with you one of my favourite delicate spring scents- Jo Malone English Pear and Freesia. Not only is it like sniffing a bouquet of exquisite Freesias (cause what is more ‘Spring’ than wild Freesias growing by the road?), but it is like a parade of angels singing hallejuahs with every spritz. It is a sensuous, fresh and heavenly concoction that is luscious, golden and blissful. A must to add a little spring in your step!

AMBER ALEXIS IS ALL ABOUT DARING TO BE DIFFERENT, SHE PUSHES THE BOUNDARIES OF SOCIAL CONVENTIONS AND ‘THE NORM’ IS NOT IN HER VOCABULARY. SO WHO IS THIS MYSTERY GIRL WHO CRAVES ADVENTURE AND IMPRACTICALITY IN A WORLD OF 9-5 WORK DAYS?
I ASKED AWARD WINNING DESIGNER RENEE AYLING?
WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND INFLATABLE?
Amber Alexis is actually my alter ego. As a self proclaimed introvert I feel that the best aspects of my personality are hidden in trying to conform to the norm and amber alexis is the weirder, bolder braver version of myself that I have created.
It was inspired by cult design trends of the 70s with a strong UK and military influence.
She is a cool, earthy and laid back girl who loves music and travel and has a lot of different layers. She’s not the kind of girl that Instagrams what she had for breakfast I have an ongoing obsession with Tartan and everyday or the kind of girl that you would see doing a duck pout with her selfie stick. She find myself constantly being inspired and drawn back to it. It’s infectious! is real and raw and that’s what makes her so damm cool. I LOVE TARTAN TOO - CAN’T GET ENOUGH! TELL ME A BIT ABOUT Fashion label, Amber Alexis was launched YOUR BACKGROUND. HOW LONG in 2013 and is designed for creative women HAVE YOU BEEN DESIGNING? HOW looking for affordable, wearable clothing DID AMBER ALEXIS COME TO BE? with that electric edge. The 1970s punk era has always really interested and appealed to me. There is something electric, bold and contemporary about it. I like that it is both modern and traditional and has been used throughout the centuries, its a symbol of rebellion and anticonformism and I really like that.
After living overseas for a couple of years I decided to come home and study graphic design. I always knew that I wanted to work within the creative industry but the fact that when studying textiles and design in high school and doing a couple of short courses years

I had always dreamed of having my own label and started Amber Alexis as a hobby on the side and treated it as another creative outlet that I was really passionate about.
WHAT IS YOUR ALL-TIME FAVOURITE PIECE FROM YOUR OWN WARDROBE?
It wasn’t until I had put together my first collection and started making sales that I decided that I really wanted to make this a successful label and a business that I could grow. DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE PIECE FROM YOU COLLECTIONS? My favourite piece from all 3 of my collections would have to be my ‘DMoney’ Khaki Tartan Harem Pants, they are super comfortable and I live in them. From my current Inflatable collection I would have to say the ‘More than a superstar’ Tartan shorts; they are a great staple piece that you can dress both up and down. IF YOU COULD HAVE ANYONE’S WARDROBE, WHOSE WOULD IT BE AND WHY? If I could have anyone’s wardrobe it would have to be Gwen Stefanis. I think She nails it every time. She really knows who she is and what suits her and doesn’t tend to stay from that. With all of the celebrities that come and
If I had to choose I would say my vintage ADIDAS Navy, White and Red Stripe Blazer. Its from Germany, I purchased it years ago and its getting way to small for me but I freaking love it. It has bright red silk lining and a small old school gold plated logo on the front I recently saw Pharrell Williams in a similar one so I know he knows what I’m talking about. WHAT DOES THE FUTURE LOOK LIKE FOR AMBER ALEXIS? ANY EXCITING PROJECTS COMING UP? It looks promising and really exciting. The label is currently on the hunt of pop up space here in Melbourne with plans to open its first store and hopefully partner it with accessories and homewares. SPRING 2014
AFTER A CHANCE MEETING AT THE HAIRDRESSER ON THE MORNINGTON PENINSULA, JAYE WEARNE AND LULU HARRIS BONDED OVER A JOINT LOVE OF FASHION, DESIGN AND CREATIVITY. INSPIRED BY ADVENTURES ACROSS THE USA, THE IDEA OF BILLIE BLUES WAS BORN AND THEY BEGAN USING VINTAGE COWBOY BOOTS AS A BLANK CANVAS TO CREATE THEIR QUIRKY CUSTOMMADE CREATIONS.
Launched towards the end of 2013, the girls began doing pop up stalls in the Billi Blues van around the Peninsula and received a great response from customers young and old. Early this year they opened their online store, and now just shy of their first anniversary, the brand has extended into jewellery, accessories, clothing, bridal gowns and bags, whilst constantly evolving and collaborating with industry heavyweights all over the world. WHAT IS YOUR BRAND ETHOS AND WHAT DOES THE NAME BILLI BLUES REPRESENT? Billi Blues represents freedom, music, dancing, laughing, fun, originality, individuality and life. We wanted to put smiles on people’s faces with our designs; and we wanted our products to make people feel alive when wearing them.
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVOURITE MATERIALS AND HOW DO YOU USE THEM TO KEEP YOUR DESIGNS FRESH AND APPEALING? Feathers and leather are our favourites, and we love studs and silver embellishments. Our designs are constantly evolving due to our products being ‘one-offs’ and not being mass produced. This gives us the ability to pick and choose what material [we use] based on what’s trending [at the time], rather than having to forecast it six to twelve months in advance. WHAT IS THE MOST INTERESTING, UNIQUE OR RARE PAIR OF BOOTS YOU’VE FOUND SINCE YOU STARTED BILLI BLUES?
Good question. Probably a [pair of] children’s white alligator [boots] with rooster embossed steel caps on the end. We ended up making YOU DRAW A LOT OF INSPIRATION them up for a friend’s daughter who was FROM THE USA – WHAT DO YOU constantly walking around in her mother’s LIKE ABOUT AMERICAN CULTURE pair! AND FASHION, AND WHAT ELSE IN ADDITION TO YOUR QUIRKY INSPIRES YOU? CUSTOM-MADE BOOTS, YOU ALSO We draw inspiration from all over the world, SELL CLOTHING AND JEWELLERY, but we do love The States due to how diverse AND YOU’VE STARTED SELLING the culture is. We are obsessed with Blues BRIDAL GOWNS IN TIME FOR and [older music], so a lot of our inspiration WEDDING SEASON. DESCRIBE comes from movies and music videos shot in HOW BILLI BLUES IS EVOLVING the Deep South. We both love New York… AND WHAT’S CURRENTLY ON but we’re country girls at heart... so the things OFFER? that inspire us [the most] are nature, and the people that we surround ourselves with every We have started making Jaguar Paws - a feathered creation, [that] you can wear as a day. neck-piece and belt, and we have Jaguar Paw hats too. We are also designing high-top Billi Blues, which are embellished high cowboy boots – and they’ve proved to be very popular. Being creative we have always wanted to make new products that would [inspire people] to keep coming back for more. Boots are only one part of the Bill Blues brand now. The brand will constantly be evolving now, so you will see [more] in good time.

TOGETHER YOU ARE FASHION DESIGNERS, ARTISTS, CRAFTSWOMEN, JEWELLERY MAKERS, SHOE DESIGNERS AND SALESWOMEN - HOW DO YOU JUGGLE ALL THE DIFFERENT JOBS REQUIRED TO MAKE BILLI BLUES A SUCCESS?
WHAT TRENDS ARE YOU FOLLOWING RIGHT NOW AND WHAT ARE YOUR FORECASTS FOR THE SPRING/SUMMER SEASONS AHEAD? We are loving colours for spring, so you will see a lot of colour for Billi Blues, as well as lace and feathers. And we can’t wait to see people in our Jaguar Paws at summer festivals.
We work really well together. We work off each other’s strengths, and at the end of the day we are always laughing so that’s the best WHAT ARE YOU EXPLORING FOR thing. You’re right though, we are definitely working overtime at the moment - however we THE FORTHCOMING SEASON? wouldn’t change it for the world! We are busy doing lots of photo shoots to launch our new range of lace Jaguar Paws. We YOU’RE A VERY YOUNG BRAND HAVING OPENED JUST LAST YEAR are also designing lots of boots for wedding season including some bridal gowns. With SELLING BOOTS OUT OF YOUR VAN, AND OPENING YOUR ONLINE spring here we are taking a lot of inspiration from nature and seeing a lot of colour. Our STORE IN JANUARY THIS YEAR, boots will bloom like the flowers. BUT YOU’VE EXPERIENCE A LOT OF SUCCESS IN A SHORT TIME. WHAT DO YOU ATTRIBUTE YOUR SUCCESS TO? Having something unique and different that nobody else had in Australia, and offering people from all ages a chance to wear something they have only dreamed of. Using vintage boots allows [our customers] to own something that’s a ‘one off,’ and all of our Jaguar Paws are handmade and handpicked by us. We were lucky that fashion bloggers wanted to work with us… and we are so grateful that people want to buy our products.

SITTING WITH JOHN CALDWELL. WE DISCUSS THE IMPORTANCE OF DRESS FOR SUCCESS AND KEEPING YOUR EYE ON THE PRIZE. AS THE AGE OLD ADAGE SAYS... DRESS FOR THE SUCCESS YOU WANT! SO WHAT DOES JOHN HAVE TO SAY ABOUT HIS OWN STYLE...
WHAT INFLUENCE DO YOU FEEL FASHION HAS HAD ON YOUR LIFE? As a society, we’re taught not to judge a book by its cover, yet we often do. Fashion has influenced me in this way through my entire life. I speak often of my experiences growing up and the challenges I faced. I came from a very poor family and often I was the only kid in school without shoes. It was rare that I would be able to have my own clothes as I usually had to dress in my older sister’s hand me downs. I was subjected to horrendous bullying in school and a lot of that was due to my appearance. I recall one instance where I was on a school camp. I had only one outfit for the whole trip and it was one of my older sisters t-shirts. It was miles too big for me. I remember walking across the mess hall during dinner and my shirt had become untucked at the back. I hadn’t noticed until a teacher pointed at me and said “what are you wearing? Are you wearing a dress?” with that the whole hall erupted with laughter and I was humiliated. An older student had seen what had happened in the mess hall. That night he was kind enough to lend me some of his clothes for the remainder of camp. I have never forgotten what that boy did for me. The immediate rise in confidence and self esteem was astounding. This was my first taste of what style could do for your character. Fashion is important for many reasons, including being a form of personal identity. Fashion lets people express style and personality. I don’t think it’s until you are denied the right to do this that you can truly appreciate the role fashion and style play on your self worth and confidence. One thing I have come to appreciate is that clothes are a very intimate thing.

I wasn’t bullied because I didn’t have the latest trends I was bullied because I was poor and the clothes on my back were just a representation of that, they were not a representation of who I was. As I got older I mused on my past experiences and while I truly believe beauty comes from within I also recognise how important it can be for your appearance to reflect who you are as a person. One of my favourite quotes is that by Miuccia Prada, “Fashion is the first step out of poverty. You have nothing and then you put something on. It is one of the first things you do to elevate yourself. ... -- there’s a resistance to fashion -- an idea that to love fashion is to be stupid. Clothes are very intimate. When you get dressed, you are making public your idea about yourself.”
equivalent of the little black dress for women. You can dress one up or down and it can be worn just as easily in the summer as in the winter. It quite literally goes with everything. A solid bag. Your bag speaks volumes of you, so choose wisely. You want to look and stay organised. Nothing says fresh out of school like a backpack and nothing says underprepared like a man without a bag at all. Solid leather is always a safe bet. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE?
Fashion can be two things. It can be as simple as something you put on to make yourself feel beautiful, or as dynamic as something illustrative of culture, time and its transformations. I am somewhere in the middle. I have my staples that make me feel Fashion continues to influence my life daily. As a professional and the face of my company like me but I often team them up with riskier, it is important that my style reflects my brand on trend options. and culture. DO YOU THINK THERE IS TRUTH BEHIND THE CONCEPT “STYLE BECAUSE YOUR PERSONALITY ISN’T THE FIRST THING PEOPLE SEE.”? Absolutely, you only get one chance to make a first impression. Unfortunately it is human nature to make snap judgments about each other. When you enter a job interview you may only be in front of the interviewer for half an hour. It is impossible for every detail of your personality to be depicted in that time frame – yet it could be the most important half an hour of your life. Style is all about putting your best face forward and making sure you visually leave them with a great sense of who you are. HAS FASHION IMPACTED YOUR CAREER PATH? Fashion has undoubtedly impacted on my career. Not only has my own personal journey of self expression through style helped me reach great heights but I have also made a living out of it. My company recruits for some of the country’s most respected fashion designers, brands and retailers. WHEN IT COMES TO INTERVIEWING CANDIDATES FOR EXECUTIVE ROLES WHAT IS IT YOU LOOK FOR IN PERSONAL PRESENTATION? Undoubtedly I look for confidence, and then I look for alignment to the brand they will potentially be representing. It is imperative that you get to dress in a way that professionally encompasses everything that is you. I can tell straight away if someone is trying hard to look a part of a brand that is not right for them. If you are uncomfortable internally you look uncomfortable externally. The best advice I can give anyone going for a role in the fashion industry is to go for roles that are synonymous with who you are.

Another important factor is personal grooming, especially fragrance. Too much can be distracting and too little… well we all know the impression that can leave. When you enter into an interview you want to be remembered for all the right reasons. Visually stimulating the interviewer with your style is the first tick, then it’s all about making sure you are well prepared for the interview questions. WHAT IS YOUR TAKE ON HAVING A STYLIST? SHOULD ALL CEO’S HAVE ONE? Yes! I absolutely love the fresh ideas my stylist brings to the table. It is quite hard to expand your sense of style especially when you are time poor. Stylists are extremely creative and a good one will get to know you and what works for your personality. WHAT ARE A FEW SUCCESS SECRETS YOU CAN SHARE WITH US? Think positive! I am a big believer in this. What you put out, you will receive in return. Feel confident, feel beautiful, and don’t sweat the small stuff. WHO IS YOUR CELEBRITY STYLE ICON? Justin Timberlake, Josh Duhamel and David Beckham has had a few moments of genius. WHAT IS THE ONE PIECE FROM YOUR WARDROBE THAT YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT? My orange Burberry trench. It was one of the first Burberry pieces I purchased many years ago. I don’t think I will ever part with it.

ART ILLUSTRATING LIFE BY CLAIRE STORY

SPRING 2014
LEONARDO FLORESVILLAR IS A DYNAMIC DESIGNER, FASHION ILLUSTRATOR, EDITOR AND ART DIRECTOR WHO IS MAKING A NAME NOT ONLY FOR HIMSELF, BUT ALSO FOR MANY OTHER BRIGHT YOUNG THINGS ENTERING THE FASHION, ART AND DESIGN INDUSTRIES AROUND THE WORLD.
Born in Mexico in 1992 and now based in LA, the self-taught artist and designer exploded onto the runways in 2010 at the tender age of 18, designing a Capsule Collection of ecoresponsible t-shirts. Later that year he took out the Best New Talent Award at the Biofashion competition in Mexico City, and exhibited his artworks in various galleries such as ArteFacto and Salazar Fine Arts. In one short year he had cemented his place in Mexico’s cultural elite, and his unique illustrative style earned him high profile clients like Vogue Mexico, NYLON and IDOL Magazine. His delicate yet daring fashion illustrations boldly brought new collections to life on the page, and his artwork continued to evolve into a contemporary refined aesthetic.
His artwork is made up of minimal colour and line, inspired by pop-culture and music like The Naked and Famous and Australia’s very own Cut Copy. His beautiful yet comic characters, awash with colour and expression, seem to jump out from the page with a sense of movement and life akin to characters in a Richard Linklater animated film. Floresvillar explains, ‘I enjoy creating sophisticated portraits especially of artists and talented designers; I also like my look to be very unique, detailed simplicity & monochromatic figures might be the evident aesthetic characteristics, but I think the expression in the eyes is a key element in my work, It defines the attitude and expression in every piece.’

A R T I L L U S T R AT I N G L I F E
Floresvillar is obsessed with ‘decadent places, people and situations; and extreme contrasts: satisfaction and void: eroticism and innocence and hedonism and violence.’ But he’s not afraid to critique his own work commenting, ‘I would say that my work is shallow and empty because it’s the graphic representation of a ‘society’ based in the material, the celebration & endorsement of a ‘beauty culture’ where all these characters coexist.” His latest theme is ‘Ugly people can’t be happy,’ and it’s evident in his depictions of exclusively attractive people, that he is guided by this obsession with beauty and aesthetics. He brings celebrities like Kirsten Dunst and Cara Delevigne, as well as his friends and colleagues, to life in sepia tones with pink backgrounds and pastel colours, with both a realistic quality and a sublime surrealism. After having already accomplished so much at such a young, the dynamic designer and illustrator founded BLND Magazine in 2012 - a contemporary art, architecture, design, fashion, illustration, industrial design, jewellery and photography magazine. With a greater focus on the artists and their backgrounds rather than on any particular work, BLND is dedicated to supporting artists around the world from a personalised point of view. Striving to ‘celebrate good taste’ BLND Magazine provides a platform for artists to showcase original and innovative art, and acts as a centre where originality and innovation are appreciated and recognised. BLND was ‘created for those whose life is inspired and coloured by creative ideas; out of love for art and human expression in its diverse forms, with its most basic essence founded on aesthetics.’

SPRING 2014
Now aged 24, Floresvillar currently works as creative director at BLND Magazine and continues to create stylish works of art, whilst constantly inspiring others to do the same. Perhaps his desire to support others stems from his own journey as a self-taught artist, who started creating his own manga style comic strips when he was just 14. His style continued to evolve until he began his career at the young age of 17, working as a graphic designer for several design consultancies in the sex industry, before moving into fashion, art and design. Although he achieved great success through the route of self-teaching, he admits it has been difficult at times, ‘I have learnt from every experience, so there has always been a constant professional and personal growth… but one of biggest challenges so far has been able to be self-taught. Despite the fact that I’ve taken some courses on very specific subjects in different universities, most of my ‘artistic’ career has been self induced.’ Floresvillar speaks with a wisdom beyond his years, as he explains, ‘I’ve faced all these stigmas and preconceptions that you are taught since you were little, about how you should be prepared professionally; but I believe that every kind of creative manifestation is already inside of every artist, and you should not need anyone to tell you how to capture that in any kind of media.”

SPRING 2014
MSFW 2014 IN REVIEW BY CHANTELLE ASCIAK
THURLEY, MICHAEL LO SORDO, DOM BAGNATO, GWENDOLLYN TO NAME A FEW BUT THIS YEAR’S LINE-UP AT MSFW 2014 HAD US COVERED WITH THE LATEST IN NEW-SEASON LOOKS, AND A WHOLE HOST OF EMERGING AND ESTABLISHED DESIGNERS, RETAILERS AND BRANDS ALL READY TO POINT US IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. THE BREATHTAKING RUNWAYS WITH IT’S MUSICAL AND ARTISTIC DIRECTION IMMERSED THE AUDIENCE IN A TOTALLY DIFFERENT UNIVERSE. LADIES IT’S A HARD ONE; WITH THE BROAD RANGE OF DESIGNERS WE HAVE COVERED YOU IN MORE WAYS THAT ONE.
Going back in time with an 70’s 80’s twist metallic’s were infused everywhere - dark hard metallic’s through Aurelio Costarella and Nicolangela’s designs to Carla Zampatti’s bronze ballet inspired eveningwear. The girly moment with various pretty pastel and soft shades; Michael Lo Sordo’s stand out moment (and one of my favourite designer’s) made his clothing easy for girls to transition from day to night. The three B’S (BIG, BOLD, BEAUTIFUL) – Say it loud and proud ‘THIS IS ME’ all you need to wear is prints! They are everywhere. Fun jungle inspired prints and all you need to do is break them up with a crop top and matching skirt, mix and match with some bold pieces and heads will turn. Textures Trendy Textures, the heart and soul was definitely shown through the details. Think silks, lace, tulles and leather. Designers such as Anaessia worked her SS15 beautifully with blending her materials together for a grown up girl’s fantasy.
Cropped tops paired with wide leg pants or pencil skirts coordinating with various colours, or prints allows you to play with your wardrobe just a little bit more than usual. SOFT and easy breezy, dresses and cropped pants in relaxed materials – hell yeah! Going to the beach for fun filled picnics or garden high tea, Australian designer Alice McCall and designer Megan Park were in front of the pack with a collection to sweeten your taste buds. Let your mind float away with the endless possibilities. Longer and higher, lowered hemlines and higher necklines (but don’t forget the visible back). Extended lines and feminine silhouettes are back! Nicola Finetti makes you feel the illusion of having a leaner and taller figure. Gaining a few more inches (being short such as myself) Yes please!
Lad’s I haven’t forgotten about you with plenty loving the blue suits – they aren’t what they use to be…. All I can say is Dom Bagnato, Ben Sherman and Calibre! With the amazing shades of blues man I wanted that eye Who knew sports fashion would look so candy in front of me 24/7. Baby blue flannels, sumptuous. From big empire sports brands in block colour or even with a white chalk like Nike, to newcomers, Lululemon, stripe check. And to give the 1950’s boy band Neoprene skirts and tops have created fun edge with tailored slacks short on the ankle, and flirtatious looks for the hot months yet so suspenders and tan loafers. You will definitely comfortable. Even pair your neon trainers with grab the ladies attention. It’s all about being a fitted midi skirt and mesh top for a seductive tailored, sharp and stylish. We dare you… and relaxed street style look. Not a dress fan? Well just wear separates. This trend is definitely staying here to stay, continuing from winter this will never go.

G E T T I N G R E A DY FOR SUMMER BY LAUREN ROBERTS
THE DAYS ARE GETTING WARMER AND THE SKIES ARE DRYING UP. THE DAYS ARE FEELING LONGER AND OUR SKIRTS ARE GETTING SHORTER.
»»Buy a bikini. Or a one-piece. Or a tankini. Or a pair of board shorts. Or a floaty flowerprint dress. Something that screams Summer and you can hang on the back of your door and smile happily at in anticipation.
ARE YOU READY FOR SUMMER? SUMMER SURE IS READY FOR YOU. HERE ARE A FEW EASY WAYS TO GET READY FOR THE RISE IN TEMPERATURE AND HUMIDITY.
»»Start waking up earlier. The sun is out a little earlier now and early is the best time to venture outside and read the paper. Or scroll through your Facebook feed. It’s no longer bitterly cold before the daily grind begins and I encourage you all to make pre-work coffee dates. Summer mornings are the perfect time to learn to surf, get back into running or start a spin class. »»Go to sleep a little earlier - don’t lay in bed in a happy nest watching re-runs of MASH when Summer mornings are around the corner. »»Slap on a fake tan or take your glowing white skin out to catch some rays (covered in sunscreen that is). Nothing feels more like Summer than glowing skin. »»Change your ringtone to something that sounds like Summer; a tune that reminds you of sunshine or a festival or the good times that loom in the months to come. »»Plan a holiday – even if it is just a weekend down South or a road trip a few hours inland. Summer is the season of adventure, of tents, of waterskiing and surfing. Embrace all the possibilities and plan yourself something to look forward to. »»Stock up on Summer essentials. Do a big shop and prepare by investing in sunscreen, a floaty new hat, more sunscreen, after-sun lotion, bug spray, maybe a bit more sunscreen and a carton of beer for the occasion that calls for it. Get matte sunscreen if you’re a Summer sweater or some cotton shirts so you don’t even up wearing the only three you own to death. Don’t own a fan? Now is the time to make that essential purchase. »»Google some Summer recipes and start taking over the kitchen with wonderful creations – start adding mango to your salads and strawberries to the side of your lunch. Stack on the spinach leaves and feta and drizzle balsamic over everything.
»»Change your hair – cut it shorter and dye it lighter. You don’t want dark, heavy hair weighing down your head. Do something a little bit different – try bangs, embrace streaks, run a red rinse through your luscious locks. Something easy to take care of and different to the normal trim-and-semi that you are committed to. »»Build a healthy relationship with your gym – start seeing each other 4-5 times a week and keep your relationship guessing by changing it up. See different parts of the gym; have fun together. The best way to get ready for Summer is to start feeling happy about laying on the beach. Getting fit is the best way to get ready for the beach season. »»Find a new haunt. Get ready for Summer by finding a few bar or area you can explore when the nights get warm and the temptation of a few after-work beverages is overwhelming. Somewhere funky or different that will be able to host a plethora of good times. »»Have a look through a Summer City guide in your capital and book yourself in for a few adventures when the temperature warms up – everything from theatre to open-art markets to ballet to archery lessons suddenly becomes more tempting when the weather is good. »»Invest in some lighter sheets – high thread counts make for breathable soft sheets and thinner Summer doonas with make your slumber infinitely more pleasant. »»Start walking more. Without the looming fear of rain or bitterly cold air, there is no reason to stay committed to public transport. You’ll be getting fitter, seeing a bit more of the world and with a bit more personal space in the morning, it’s likely you will arrive into work with a bit of a bounce in your step. Best way to get ready for Summer? Get excited. Summer brings with it a lot of potential. Embrace it.

HUSKY
W W W. FJ O R D E M A G A Z I N E . C O M
WINTER 2014
HUSKY A LOCAL BAND FROM MELBOURNE THAT HAVE GAINED INTERNATIONAL FAME WITH THEIR DEBUT ALBUM FOREVER SO. WINNING THE TRIPLE J UNEARTHED COMPETITION IN 2011 AND, HAVING ALREADY TOURED AUSTRALIA, EUROPE AND THE U.S., RELEASING THEIR LATEST ALBUM RUCKER’S HILL WAS THE NEXT THING TO DO.
As I walk down Smith Street with a bunch of interview questions in mind, my main concern is that I have no idea what the band Husky will be like in person. With an international album already under their belt, will they be full of energy and enthusiasm? Uninterested with the sheer amount of press they have received? Defensive about their musical prose? My fears are allayed as I walk into the Grace Darling Hotel and witness two very normal guys, Husky and Gideon, sitting down with a beer each on the couch. First thing I’m asked is “Hey, do you want to do this interview outside in the beer garden? It’s a nice day.” And with that the tone was set. Husky Gawenda and Gideon Preiss, two cousins from Melbourne, formed Husky in 2008 and were Australia’s first band to be signed by Sub Pop Records. Although they have toured in three vastly different parts of the world, it is quite obvious that they are two very down to earth and modest musicians. Husky and Gideon teamed up with Evan Tweedie on bass for their first album, and they are joined by Arron Light on drums for their second album, Rucker’s Hill. The album, which has taken almost two years to make, was the product of many days and nights wandering around Melbourne,
gathering inspiration from books, locations and personal memories. “It would often start with a lyric, so it might be a line or a couple of lines that comes to you out of nowhere,” Husky quotes. “Sometimes it’s something I’ve carefully crafted and other times it’s just a line that comes from somewhere that grabs me.” Each song has also been influenced by their time touring and promoting their first album. “This album is in some ways a reflection of what we have learnt and I think we wanted to create songs that were a bit more upbeat, more immediate and at least to some extent, we have done that.” says Gideon. The album was recorded at a series of different locations, including Husky’s house in Collingwood, and in a studio in Christmas Hills in order to “be away from it all”. The artwork for the album cover was designed by a local artist and personal friend of theirs, which gives the album an even greater ‘Made in Melbourne’ feel. Just for fun, I pose the question, “Imagine that you had never formed the band. What do you think you would be doing instead?” Both Gideon and Husky, initially lost for words, admit that it is a tricky question to answer. Husky replies, “I would like to build furniture out of wood, it’s really creative and really

practical. Other than that I studied astrophysics at university, so maybe I’d be an astrophysicist hanging out at Mt Stromlo Observatory.” Gideon’s response, “Probably a fisherman in a tinny. Just me and Hemingway…and a massive marlin.”
like St Joan and Heartbeat, that build their sound up to a powerful and layered finish, this album definitely possesses many different personalities.

WINE & DINE AT 400 GRADI BY BEN ANDERSON
WHEN YOU FIRST MEET JOHNNY DI FRANCESCO, YOU CAN TELL HE’S PASSIONATE ABOUT HIS CRAFT. THE WAY IN WHICH HE SPEAKS ABOUT 400 GRADI CECCHETTI COMES FROM A PLACE OF JOY. TELLING US HOW WHENEVER HE TRAVELS TO VENICE BEFORE HE EVENS STEPS FOOT IN HIS HOTEL HE GOES STRAIGHT FROM THE AIRPORT TO HIS FAVOURITE ‘BACARI’ BAR TO HAVE A GLASS OF WINE AND PLATE. It’s this notion of flavours, food and wine that drove Di Francesco to expand 400 Gradi and create 400 Gradi Cecchetti. With small share plates and an extensive selection of wines Cecchetti brings a piece of Venice to the streets of Melbourne. Award-winning Pascale Gomes-McNabb, one of Melbourne’s most celebrated interior designers, designed the 50-seat bar. With interior access to next-door’s restaurant, 400 Gradi Cicchetti patrons can also include Johnny’s internationally awarded pizza. Johnny took out the number one spot at The World Pizza Championship earlier this year for best STG (Traditional Speciality Guaranteed (Specialita’ Tradizionale Garantita), with 400 Gradi now being home to the world’s best pizza. Cecchetti a buzz with people; and a staff that are electric, bring the energy in the room up with their happy disposition. Helpful and eager they have a though understanding of the menu and what to match it with so each of the flavours and tastes can come alive. Featuring small plates including the likes of crispy polenta with mixed caramalised mushroom and gorgonzola, and spaghettini al granchio with lobster bisque, fresh crab meat, garlic, chilli, cherry tomato and fresh basil. Is a small selection of the expansive menu available. And with a gallery of salumi on display, Cecchetti offers its patrons the opportunity to sample a variety of pancetta, prosciutto and mortadella as well as a 30 month aged cantina secretum – a must for any visit. These are accompanied with a wide range of cheeses each with their own textures and flavours that speak volumes on their own. Sliced and cut to order you are always insured the freshest selection.
Speaking with Di Francesco, he invited us to try a selection of his menu of his choosing. Wanting the flavours of the plates to speak for themselves. He created a menu that encouraged people to share and try a variety of plates. But more importantly, Di Francesco understood that eating is an experience to be enjoyed over time, sharing laughs, stories, drinks and of course food and this is something that should not be rushed. And with that he has been successful in his endeavor. The only thing left was to enjoy a glass of wine with our meal and with over twenty glasses of wine by the glass there was no shortage of choice. But Cecchetti goes further, wanting to provide every customer with the opportunity the sample some of the best wines from around the world. They’ve employed the use of a sophisticated piece of equipment that allows the team behind the bar to offer single pours. With Di Francesco wanting everyone to be able to enjoy the experience of tasting a $300 bottle of wine, without having to think twice, he found a way to make it happen. And not forgetting those that may not fancy a glass of vino, Cecchetti offers an extensive cocktail list that has been creatively constructed and paired with plates to highlight and bring out the flavours and textures of each. With something for everyone 400 Gradi Cecchetti is an experience that is not to be rushed, so when you find yourself with a few hours and a friend or two. Cecchetti provides the perfect setting to settle in, sip on a glass of wine and share a few plates not to mention a few laughs and definitely few more glasses of wine. And if you can’t get out to Brunswick don’t fret with Di Francesco recently opening his doors at Melbourne’s Crown Casino.
