EXPERIENCE THE FJORD COAST The coast of Sogn og Fjordane is the place to go for great adventures. The combination of coast, mountain and fjord offers unique nature experiences, whatever the season. Travel from narrow fjords, glaciers and high mountains to small islands far out where the fjord meets the open sea. Get close to nature in ever-changing weather: from brilliant sunshine, days on the beach and mirror-calm seas, to an overnight stay in a lighthouse with storm waves battering the walls. This travel guide contains information and inspiration for planning your stay in the region.

ISLAND HOPPING Board the local postal boat to island hop to Solund, Bulandet and Værlandet. Lonely Planet has named the round trip among thousands of islands, islets and skerries one of the best in Norway! Travel the postal boat route among the multitude of Solund’s islands and narrow sounds. Visit idyllic Gåsvær and take a stroll in Bulandet, where you can visit local museums, viewpoints and outdoor artworks. Experience the Nordsjøporten road with its six spectacular sea bridges between Bulandet and Værlandet. Solund’s local postal boat connects the island kingdoms of Solund and Askvoll during the summer. The postal boat travels between Hardbakke in Solund and Bulandet in Askvoll. The captain guides during the trip, pointing out many hidden treasures. When you reach Bulandet, you’ll have time to look around on your own. If you’d like more time to enjoy the scenery and explore the islands, we recommend spreading the island-hopping trip over several days. There are several places to stay in Solund, Værlandet and Bulandet; you can find an overview at fjordkysten.no/accomodation Island-hopping trips for groups are available all year round on request. Contact mail@fjordkysten.no or ring +47 57 74 30 00 for information and bookings.

ISLAND HOPPING SUGGESTED ITINERARY FOR BULANDET The postal boat from Solund docks at Nikøy quay in Bulandet, where you’ll have time to look around independently. We recommend starting with lunch at the cafe before hiring a bike or exploring the islands on foot. Follow the village road up from the shop and to the right. After approx. 500 m, you cross a small bridge, with Bulandsheimen on the left-hand side. Continue following the road until you come to a well-signed crossroads. If you take the road to the left, you’ll come to Bulandet Ungdomshus, where you’ll find ‘Bulandet Temapark’, a local museum that provides a good introduction to life in the island community. For great views over all of Bulandet, continue past ‘Bulandet Temapark’ and follow the path up to the Halsøyhågen viewpoint. As well as stunning views, there are picnic tables and benches and a map of the islands. At Hillersøyhaugen, you’ll find busts of Berte Hillersøy and Hansine Tistel, who, together with schoolmaster Ole Rogne, rescued seven of the crew of the Tønsberg schooner Gugner in February 1885. It went down by Sengskjeret, south of Bulandet, after battling in a storm for several days. In recognition of their exploits, Berte (25) and Hansine (21) were each awarded the Norwegian Lifesaving Medal, Second Class, for Heroic Deeds. The busts were made by ceramic artist Ingun Dahlin and stand on plinths of ‘Black Beauty’ stone from Værlandet.
SUGGESTED ITINERARY FOR VÆRLANDET Just a short distance from the ferry quay on Værlandet is the idyllic Værøyhamna harbour, with Værlandet Gjestehamn and Tante Gry’s Pub. Here you can experience the beautiful quayside buildings and take part in various activities. Værlandet Gjestehamn has a restaurant and offers bike hire, maps and self-guided tours. The North Sea Trail on Værlandet is an excellent hike on a clearly waymarked trail, and takes approx. 1 hour 30 mins. The Klettane hills are Værlandet’s most characteristic feature. A chain has been installed along the path leading to the top of Høgkletten to ensure a safe walk up to this special viewpoint at 163 m. The path turns off the North Sea Trail and is clearly signed.

KVERNSTEINSPARKEN, MILLSTONE PARK Join the stone adventure! Millstone Park in Hyllestad is an outdoor museum in the largest stone quarry landscape from the Viking period and Middle Ages in Northern Europe. We take you back to a time when there was a high level of activity in Hyllestad! In hundreds of quarries, stonecutters extracted millstone after millstone. Everyone needed millstones. Without millstones, there was no flour – and no food! Hundreds of thousands of millstones left Hyllestad and were sold across Norway, Denmark and Sweden. This was big industry, involving skilled craftsmen, expert traders and a lot of money!
At Millstone Park we take you on a tour through the stone quarries. After the tour, you can try stone carving, mill grain, bake bread, make soapstone jewellery – or relax by the fire and enjoy something to eat and drink.
OPENING TIMES 24 June – 26 August, Tuesday – Sunday 10.00 – 17.00. You can visit the park independently outside these opening times. PRICE: Adults NOK 60 / children (7–17 years) NOK 30 REFRESHMENTS: We serve millstone bread, pancakes and coffee. SPECIAL OFFER FOR GROUPS: Guided tours in Norwegian, English and German (1 hr, NOK 1,000, max. 25 persons) CONTACT: Tel. +47 458 71 940 · post@kvernstein.no · kvernsteinsparken.no

THE COASTAL MUSEUM IN SOGN OG FJORDANE The Coastal Museum in Sogn og Fjordane is centrally located in Florø, within walking distance of the town centre, and showcases the natural and cultural history of the coast of Sogn og Fjordane, from the Stone Age to the “oil age”. The exhibition halls provide a glimpse of daily life on the coast, the development of the town of Florø, tools used for fishing and hunting, and a large collection of local boats. The building named “Snorreankeret” houses an exhibition on Norwegian petroleum activities and Norway’s role as a global energy exporter. The museum site lies in a varied coastal landscape. A network of footpaths and bridges makes the area into an openair museum that communicates information on culture and nature and offers activities for all ages. Here you can visit an old salting shack that still smells of the herring hung here to dry and view “The Big Herring Adventure” exhibition. Sheep and goats graze here in the summer. Vågsberget in Vågsøy municipality was one of many trading posts and inns along the coast and has roots dating back to the 17th century. The trading privilege was the economic cornerstone here, and the inn provided people travelling along the coast with a safe harbour and a place to stay overnight on their journey. Today, Vågsberget is one of the most complete and well looked-after sites of its kind in Norway. During the summer, the Vågsberget Coastal Museum offers guided tours of the historic buildings, and an exhibition and café in the works building.

FISHING SEA FISHING Surrounded by open sea and fjords, conditions are perfect for sea fishing all year round. Fishing in winter is a very special experience, and there is a good chance of landing some really big fish. Did you know that shellfish are at their best in the winter?
Fishing has always been important for coastal communities. There are still traditional fishing villages and islands here where fishing remains the primary source of income for local people. You’ll find cottages, fisherman’s shacks and boathouses, providing the perfect setting for fishing holidays. These are close to the sea, with access to good boats and facilities for preparing and storing the catch. You can also join a local fisherman for a guided fishing trip and get tips on the best places to fish.
SAFETY AT SEA The weather along the coast can change rapidly. Always check the weather forecast, and remember to take warm clothing and the required safety gear.
INLAND FISHING Flekke- og Guddalsvassdraget – the Flekke and Guddal watercourse – in Fjaler extends for around 30 km from the Flekkefjord to the mountains in Guddal and is well stocked with salmon and sea trout. The watercourse, with all its bodies of water in both the main watercourse and in the mountains and surrounding landscapes, provides many beautiful nature experiences. There are several accommodation options close to the watercourse. Bremanger and Flora both offer good conditions for inland fishing. Bremanger alone has more than 100 fishing lakes. Fishing permits may be purchased at the municipal service office and local information offices and several of the local convenience stores.

DIVING The Fjord Coast offers fantastic conditions for diving. A rich variety of species, exciting diving terrain and a large number of wrecks to dive on draw divers to the region from all over the world. Gulen Dive Resort is one of Norway’s best diving centres, providing professional diving experiences. Diving in Bremanger and Flora has much to offer, with many wartime ships and a wealth of life below the surface. gulendykkesenter.no
NORWAY’S BEST WRECK DIVING Several of Norway’s best shipwrecks are to be found at the mouth of the Sognefjord. Many of the ships went down during the Second World War and have an exciting story to tell. The German cargo ship «DS Frankenwalk» has been named Norway’s best wreck to dive on. The ship lies upright on its keel on a sandbank, at a depth of 40–45 m. Gulen Dive Resort offers dives to more than 20 wrecks in the area.
PERIPHYLLA Periphylla is a deep-water jellyfish found in all the world’s seas except in the Arctic. They are usually seen individually but in Gulen you can see hundreds at a time. An annual event offers divers the chance to join a very special dive: in the middle of winter, in the middle of the night, in the middle of the fjord. It’s extremely rare to see jellyfish in the day, while on January/February nights it’s possible to see hundreds at a time. Gulen Dive Resort is the only diving centre in the world to offer this unique experience.
NUDIBRANCH SAFARI Every March, visitors from all over Europe come to Gulen to take part in Nudibranch Safari. The event, which involves Norwegian and international researchers, has documented more than 60 different species off Gulen Dive Resort. This represents 70% of all species known to exist in Norwegian waters! Nudibranchs – a group of soft-bodied, marine gastropod molluscs – are an extremely popular motif for underwater photography. During the event, participants learn about underwater photography, and the biology, behaviour and other aspects of what are perhaps the most beautiful of sea creatures.

If you choose the outer route through Gulen and Hyllestad, you will get the opportunity to visit the old and charming trading centre of Skjerjehamn, the Gulating assembly site close to Eivindvik, and the Millstone Park in Hyllestad. In Solund you can join a lighthouse safari to Utvær, the westernmost lighthouse of Norway, or go island hopping with the postal boat. Make a stop at Korssund, and enjoy the 4 metres high cross, more than thousand years old! Close by you can also visit Lammetun coastal fort. In Dale you can visit Jakob Sande-tunet, and then drive over the Dalsfjordbridge to Holmedal and Askvoll. Take the ferry from Askvoll to Værlandet and explore the beautiful islands of Bulandet and Værlandet. In direction Florø, you should take a shortcut to the rock-carving site at Ausevika, close to Eikefjord. When visiting the costal town of Florø, we recommend a visit to the Coastal museum, and a boat trip to one of the many beautiful islands, like Svanøy and Kinn. In Bremanger you should pay a visit to Kalvåg and the beautiful beach of Grotlesanden. And if you are fit to a top tour, you should try the route to Hornelen – the highest sea cliff in Europe! The area boasts quiet roads, gently rolling terrain and a multitude of islands linked by local boat and ferry routes. Bring your bicycle when you go island hopping. •
Værlandet og Bulandet: The 5.24 km Nordsjøporten road between Værlandet and Bulandet takes you across six bridges right out where the fjord meets the open sea – perfect for cycling!

STORMWATCHING Winters along the Fjord Coast are often mild, green and stormy, with fantastic winter light. November to February is high season for storms! There is occasional cold weather with snow, but this is unusual here, and if there is snow, it never lasts long. In contrast, windy days are in good supply! The region is the stormiest in southern Norway, and boasts spectacular nature experiences. Some days are clear and sunny, but stormy weather is usually just around the corner. Seeing the waves crash against the shore from a viewpoint where the fjord meets the open sea is a fascinating sight. Due to the mild climate you can go walking year round. If you need to escape the wet and windy weather, there are local galleries and museums to visit. Or what about spending some time at a spa? The Fjord Coast is at its most romantic and special in winter, and it’s worth taking a few days to experience the raw power of nature. A comfortable stay is an important part of the experience. Light the fire, snuggle under a blanket and enjoy a hot drink with your nearest and dearest. Fish and shellfish are at their best in winter, and our restaurants offer top-class food experiences. You’ll find a high standard of hospitality everywhere you go – the abrasive coastal climate stands in strong contrast to the friendly people waiting to welcome you. GULEN Gulen municipality lies in the far south-west of Sogn og Fjordane, bordering Hordaland. The municipality offers varied scenery, with 1500 islands facing the North Sea to the west and lush landscapes towards the mountains in the east. This diversity makes Gulen a paradise for outdoor activities such as hiking and mountain trips, kayaking, fishing and diving. Gulen is home to the Nordic region’s finest diving centre. The area boasts well-signed and -maintained walking trails. The 'Cairn Walk' makes an excellent day hike, showcasing cairns along the coast. In Eivindvik and at Gulatinget, you can follow easy cultural trails and learn about the history of the area with video and audio narratives on your mobile. See kulturvandring.no for further information. In Gulen, you’re walking in the footsteps of the Vikings, who gathered at the Gulating each year for 400 years. The thing served as a political entity and court from around AD 900–1300. The Gulating laws are the oldest body of laws in the Nordic countries, which is why the Gulating was chosen as Sogn og Fjordane’s Millennium Site, decorated with Bård Breivik’s monumental artwork. Accommodation options in Gulen include Vidsyn Hotell, Brekkestranda Fjordhotell and Gulating hotell, as well as Skjerjehamn, a well-preserved trading centre dating from the 17th century. Here you can stay in the Swiss chalet dating from 1891 or in a modern apartment. The famous monument of King Olav V greets seafarers in the shipping channel.

The hamlet is open every Sunday from June to August, and you can take a guided tour following in the footsteps of the poet and learning about the cultural history of Dale. “Lisa i Li – krambu og bakeri” makes homemade cakes, griddle cakes, coffee and ice cream, and sells music and books about the poet, t-shirts and postcards. Guided tours and events with cultural features for groups and school children can be booked all year round. Cultural trail following the footsteps of Jakob Sande online and on boards. Hjortegarden is a farm famous for its countryside management, high standards of animal welfare, culinary traditions and hunting – and adding value in all it does. The red deer – in Norwegian: hjort – is the majestic animal that presides in the forests around the farm, ruling right the way down from the fjord, up along the rivers, through the forest to the bare mountains and the mighty Ålfotbreen glacier.

Songen ved det store djup
16. and 17. June 2018
15. and 16. June 2019
Kinnaspelet, «Songen ved det store djup», is performed each year in the mid of June, staged by the medieval church on the island of Kinn, west of Florø. Through 34 years have about 100.000 people enjoyed this historical pageant in the natural amphitheatre between the old stone church and the mighty mountain on the island. The old medieval church and the mighty nature here by the sea is part of the scenography. The adventure starts with a beautiful boat trip from Florø to Kinn. You can view the programme and read more about the pageant at www.kinnaspelet.no Kinnaspelet is produced in collaboration with Sogn and Fjordane Theatre, musicians and around 160 actors, both professional and amateur. Contact: Kinnaspelet, tel. +47 57 75 25 30 or via e-mail: kinnaspelet@gmail.com
