MEMBER OF THE MONTH: Michelle NguyeN APRIL 2014 Michelle Nguyen is currently a first year Key Clubber and a freshman at Franklin High. At first, she chose to join because she loved to volunteer even before high school. Now, she spends a lot of her time doing Key Club events whether service events, fundraisers, or social events like Fall and DCON. She found it difficult to choose one favorite, but she decided on Kiwanis One Day. “I loved helping out at the Kiwanis Family House alongside my home club, as well as all the new Key Club and Circle K members I met there!” Her favorite part about Key Club is being able to give back to the community while meeting caring and diverse people all over CNH. Something that few people know about her is “I can be very shy and awkward at times, yet really crazy and outgoing at others!” When she's not doing Key Club/service related activities, she enjoys doing scout related work, watching Kdramas, and texting.

MEMBER OF THE MONTH: MegaN Morris MAY 2014 Megan Morris helps a young girl make a bunny ear headband.

Megan Morris is currently a first year in Key Club and a freshman at Franklin High. She first wanted to join Key Club because in middle school she would see all the clubs go by during parades and Key Club “always stood out as a place where everyone was enthusiastic and I wanted to be a part of it.” Her favorite events have been volunteering at fairytlae town because she loves working with children. Her favorite part about being in Key Club is getting to meet new people because she is “constantly astounded by how kind people are.” When Megan isn't volunteering, she loves to read obsessively.

Spring Eggxtravaganza

I really enjoyed the Spring Extravaganza and a major reason why is because I love kids! I was lucky enough to be assigned in a bouncy house to look over the kids and while I was at it, I played with/entertained them too! -Lesley Wong The event, while was hotter than expected, went really well with the children smiling and having fun with the crafts and costumed characters. It was also wonderful for us, the volunteers, to see the children having fun doing the easter egg hunts. -Andrew Yu All the little bunny ears were ready to be f itted and worn by little children, until the wind picked up. My annoyed feelings toward this dissolved when I saw the bashful smiles of the children I helped. -Pauline Tze I really enjoyed being able to help the children make bunny ears and see almost everyone wearing them. Even some of the adults got in on it and joined the bunny ear trend! It was really fun spending my Easter with all of these other spirited and happy key clubbers that were clearly eager to help their community. I'm glad I signed up! -Eileen Eto

A Clang for Inclusiveness

Orange division T-shirts everywhere. Franklin Key Clubbers mingled and chatted amongst each other, but fell silent at this sound: The unmistakable 'clang' of the Key Club bell sang as Sharon Hsu began the meeting at 3:11 P.M. in the classroom of our beloved Mr. To, our faculty advisor. With unwavering leadership and courage, she informed members about past and upcoming events and new opportunities.
After the 'clang' had faded, the unified chorus of proud Key Clubbers recited the pledge. The meeting proceeded to a fun activity to break any ice that crystalized over spring break: Simon Says. Key Club officers were jubilant at its success; the member were more than happy to participate. “Today's icebreaker were really fun and I liked seeing everybody laughing and having fun as they played simon says. I also enjoyed seeing everybody after spring break again and just hanging out Pauline Tze | DIVISION 7 SOUTH| Franklin High with fellow Key Clubbers,” Eileen Eto admitted. Ryan Santiago vocalized similar views, “the game was fun and a bit nostalgic as it reminded me of when I was younger, playing those types of games.” With a final strike to the Key Club bell, Sharon Hsu adjourned the meeting at 3:20 P.M. Briefly, after the meeting, Sharon reflected, "It was my first time leading the meeting as President and I'm glad it went pretty smoothly. I have a lot to work on such as my speaking skills and I know will try my best to improve! I'm glad that many people took a committee head application and I hope our club will have an amazing extended board this year!”

Working at the Snack Bar

During the little league baseball games, volunteers worked the snack bar selling hot dogs, chips and nachos to the families of the players. There were only three Franklin Key Clubbers at the event, me, Cynthia and Vanessa, but there were also a lot of parent volunteers there making the snack bar a bit crowded at times. It was great serving the families, especially all the little kids who came up and just wanted some candy. The parent volunteers that we worked alongside were always very helpful and they really made it a more enjoyable experience. There were a couple of times where the snack bar would get fairly busy and things inside would be a bit hectic but for the most part the event was pretty laid back. After all the hard work, we ended up getting pretzels which was a really nice bonus. I was excited when I was able to volunteer for this event since it's so close to my home. It was great to help out at an event that is so tied into our neighborhood since youth sports is a really important part of our community. All the parent volunteers had known each other for years so it was a little bit awkward entering into it at first but they were all so welcoming that it really helped me to get the most out of volunteering for the day. Overall, I had a great time and definitely would love to volunteer at the baseball park again.

ReIMAGINE: the return of color

The ReIMAGINE event's purpose was to ReBUILD, ReSTORE, and ReVITALIZE the Mack Road Corridor where BOSS (Bayside of South Sacramento Church) does their Saturday “Takin' it to the Streets” Nightwalks!” There were several projects to work on; Franklin Key Clubbers worked on Project 7, painting the iron fence on the Aspen Apartments. I saw volunteers, old and young, scattered everywhere on Mack Road working on different things in their area. When I came to the station I was assigned to, I looked down the sidewalk and saw a crowd of people in neon yellow shirts, painting the iron fence black. I joined them and every time I would finish a section, I would walk down the street to find another unpainted section of the fence. I did that for a few hours, maybe two or three. While painting, I met some volunteers from the church. Some of them were young children; I met a boy who got paint all over his volunteer shirt. “Don't even ask,” said the dad. I found it funny because the boy's friend also had her shirt semi-painted. The event was fun while it lasted, but I think there should have been a few more Key Club volunteers because I felt lonely, except for Cassie and Amelia.

Capital City Classics Run

The Capital City Classics run, or more specifically where all the organization stands and people gathered, was held in a small park right in front of the Crocker Art Museum. The actual course of the run and other details about the run itself I do not know, but many people showed up from runners to spectators and people just interested in the event taking place. I helped carry and organize water bottle containers at first, then for the remainder of the time I was there I helped out at a food stand(free by the way). Eileen and I both helped to cut up fruits and bagels, replenish the supply of food, and to recycle empty cardboard containers. There was a pleasantly tranquil atmosphere in which I worked, mildy paced, and I generally liked it.
